Great White shark detected off the coast

A

10-foot great white shark was tracked off the coast of New Jersey Tuesday morning, July 27th. According to the Ocearch Shark Tracker, it pinged off the coast near Ocean City and Atlantic City just after 8 a.m.

Ocearch tags and monitors several sharks and other marine life to help scientists develop data. The organization also shows a map which can determine whether a shark swims close to shore.

The over 10 foot, 800 pound shark, known as Miss May pinged several miles off the coast. She is considered a subadult, meaning she passed through her juvenile period but does not have all the typical adult

characteristics yet. The shark was originally tagged in 2019, off the coast of Florida.

Miss May has a Twitter account @MissMay_Shark and is followed by more than 8,000 people. On July 28th at 1:32 pm, she tweeted "She is just off the coast of Atlantic City."

Shark attacks in New Jersey are very rare.

Only six shark attacks have occurred since 1975, and all of those were non-fatal, according to the Shark Institute. The last fatal shark attack in New Jersey was in August of 1926, nearly a hundred years ago.

"Paddlers and Tattlers" Lessons from the river

L

ast weekend my family went on a whitewater rafting excursion. It took us far from our comfort zone and plopped us in the middle of a wild river with boulders at every turn.

The four of us were in the raft with a guide in his own boat, watching from what felt like, much too far away. We had to work together at a level that did not come naturally to us.

The view from the gorge was breathtaking with mountains on all sides. We had nothing with us on the raft other than a paddle though. The risk of losing a camera, phone or even car key was too great. So we took the photographs in our minds. Typically,we are always taking pics and selfies with our ever ready cell phones. It was refreshing to simply take in the scenery, and enjoy the twists and turns.

"Paddle," I yelled as we were rushing towards a jagged boulder protruding from the water. "Faster. Faster. And Bob's not paddling." That was the first of many "tattletales" to be told that

day. Bob shot me a look like he was ready to push me overboard. Someone was always to blame, but the blame got us nowhere. "Are you a paddler or tattler?" we joked.

"Lean forward—row!” the raft guide yelled to us over the roaring whitewater. We sat shoulder to shoulder around the raft, that was about the size of our coffee table. "Left, paddle hard," the guide yelled as we spun backwards through the rapid. We were both exhilarated and terrified.

Whew! We yelled in unison after a successful run down the Class III rapid. Then suddenly, another—“Go! Paddle!”, and we dove right back in for round two. However, there was the time Sarah flew out of the raft upon impact with yet another boulder and we struggled to get her back in the raft amidst the rapids. I lost my paddle once and Bob lost his footing, floundering on top of us. We were a sight to behold! Thank goodness the guide was patient and well trained.

After hours on the river, we fell into a rhythm though and finally learned to cooperate to meet the challenge

before us. It turns out that whitewater rafting is more than just a check mark on our bucket list of adventures.

It is also an incredible lesson in the importance of teamwork. The thrilling moments on the water helped us build both trust and collaboration with one another. Like most things in life, successfully navigating a roaring river required each of us to contribute and cooperate.

The river, with its treacherous boulders also mirrored life in that there were obstacles all along the way. Just as a river is full of large rocks that seemingly come from nowhere, life too has obstacles that show up when we're least expecting them. 2020 has

been a solid reminder of that!

We learned to keep paddling when the going got tough. As in life, when things get difficult and hard to manage, it's more important than ever, to keep moving forward.

After seven hours and 12 miles down the river, we completed our journey. We were drained and exhausted, yet oddly invigorated. Later, we gathered at dinner to share and laugh about different moments on the river. I have a feeling it is a story we will be sharing for a long time.

Making It Work: Surviving and Thriving during a COVID-19 Summer

o one likes a pandemic, but when it’s summertime, it feels like a hot, sweaty nightmare. Hand sanitizer feels a little stickier, social distancing sounds cruel, and no one wants a mask tan line. How can we make summer worth it during these difficult times?

Here are my tips for maximizing your 2020 summer: Enjoy Nature Since the indoors and close spaces can be dangerous, take this time to explore natural beauty. There are so many opportunities to relish in the world that surrounds us. Grab your sister and go paddleboarding on the bay. Take your family on a camping trip in the Pinelands and tell scary stories about the Jersey Devil. Lay on the beach and

listen to great music. Bike on the boardwalk. Although we cannot travel very far or visit all of our loved ones, we can find exciting "stay-cation" activities right outside our doors.

Lean into your strange hobbies.

Everyone makes it through a pandemic differently, so why not pick up a hobby? My twin sister Holly, after she was forced to come home from college this past spring, decided to learn to skateboard. She watched YouTube videos and documentaries on the sport, borrowed my dad’s skateboard, and spent hours in the driveway practicing. By the time quarantine ends, she hopes to nail her new tricks. What are you excited to try?

Make some watermelon gazpacho. Draw cartoons. Knit scarves for your friends and family (winter is coming faster than you think!). Just be yourself.

Host a special event (social distancing-style) This past spring, my friend invited me to her house for two reasons: to meet her newly-adopted kittens, and

to attend a socially-distanced tea party.

She picked up some cheap caviar and biscuits and brewed tea. I brought a homemade rhubarb cake and blueberry lemonade. I put on my new dress and a little makeup, which was a rare treat after working/living in pajamas for three months straight. We wore masks (until we started eating/drinking delicious things), sat six feet across from each other on her patio, and kept hand sanitizer nearby. It was so fun. If you are missing social connection, host a safe, little party.

Organize a calming, yoga get-together in your backyard. Find a drive-in movie and invite your neighbors to join in (stay in separate cars, though). Work on a community garden. Get creative, and make your own opportunities.

Make yourself better I love a good chance to upgrade my life. This summer, I have been busy getting ready for law school this fall which means I have been hunting for a good-quality suit, buying textbooks, and searching for a new apartment. For you,

this might look a little different.

Learn how to sew and make your own masks. Teach your children about car maintenance or financial management. Read some historical commentaries and prepare for the upcoming election in November. Buy a French press or espresso machine and make fancy coffee drinks for your spouse. How can you upgrade your life?

Celebrate the good things.

It’s easy to mourn everything we’ve lost this year, but I challenge you to find the positive in the little things. I’m thankful to have had job security and been able to work from home.

Visiting the library weekly, cooking new recipes and discovering new music has really made me smile. I keep a gratitude journal, and everyday, I write three things I am thankful for (some days are harder than others!). Even though we may be sadly sick or alone or financially insecure, we all have some form of good in our lives, even if it's just memories. And remember, there will always be more good to come.

Summer should be special. So make it special. In 2020, more creativity is simply required. And isn’t that something to celebrate?

Chef Michael Brennan brings a fresh flare to Josie Kelly's Menu

W

hen you think about the Irish Pub experience, you probably envision a room full of bubbling laughter, flowing beer, plates being passed around, and a close comradery among diners in a cozy setting. The Irish Pub experience is hospitality centric, offering a unique experience for patrons. At Josie Kelly’s Public House in Somers Point, food and beer enthusiasts have been enjoying that Irish Pub experience since they opened their doors in 2018.

In the age of social distancing, that close-knit dining experience is being challenged but Kathleen and Dermot Lloyd of Josie Kelly’s in Somers Point are up to the task. The parking lot has been transformed into a beer garden-esque atmosphere with a full stage for nightly live music, AstroTurf

grass, appropriately distanced tables and great energy.

The biggest change at Josie Kelly’s is the fresh take on the menu by the new executive chef, Michael Brennan. Brennan, well known for his family owned restaurant Cardinal Bistro, was brought on board originally to help create a takeout menu when Covid-19 shut down in-person dining.

Brennan’s commitment to sourcing local ingredients along with his attention to detail and experience in a variety of cuisines, brought a fresh flare to Josie Kelly’s menu. Brennan and the Lloyds worked together to create such a successful takeout experience, that it only made sense for Chef Brennan to step into the executive chef role upon the reopening of restaurants for in-person dining.

Brennan, who began as a busboy at a high-end restaurant in Philadelphia, never intended to end up in food and beverage but as fate would have it, has built quite a name for himself at a young age. As an 18-year-old young man, he found himself working in restaurants to make ends meet.

From busboy, to working as a coat check and then a host, Brennan began to find interest in the culinary experience.

After his shifts, he would stay late to stage in the kitchen, learning from top Philadelphia chefs. [For reference, A stage is an unpaid internship a cook takes to expose him- or herself to new techniques.]

With the encouragement of the chef that he was working with, Brennan went on to study culinary arts at The Culinary Institute of America. Upon finishing school, Brennan went on to study under various chefs and ultimately ended up opening Cardinal Bistro in Ventnor in the summer of 2016. They have since closed that location

and are looking forward to opening a new location in Atlantic City in the Spring of 2021. At only 28 years old, Brennan has been featured on the Food Network, studied in kitchens from Philadelphia to South Carolina, and is highly regarded as one of the greatest chefs in South Jersey.

We look forward to the revamping of the Cardinal Bistro brand to hit New York Avenue in Atlantic City next year. Until then, you can find Chef Brennan busy crafting new and exciting dishes at Josie Kelly’s like the new grilled Maine lobster with lemon compound better, curry carrot puree, potato, apple, and fennel salad. Of course, you can still enjoy traditional fish and chips, Shephard’s Pie, and potato croquettes on the “Irish Picnic Menu” but don’t miss out on new dishes curated by the one and only, Chef Michael Brennan.

France honors Word War II veteran with Legion of Honor in OC ceremony

A

n American veteran of World War II has received France’s highest honor on that country’s national day, in recognition of his service in the signal corps.

Francis X. McCormac, 99, witnessed some of the most harrowing moments of the 20th century, from the allied invasion of Europe at Omaha Beach to the Battle of the Bulge to the liberation of a Nazi concentration camp.

McCormac has lived in Ocean City for about 10 years. Two of his daughters, Pat and Maureen, also live in town. In a recent interview, he said he lost his wife, Esther, in 2016.

They had seven children and 70 years together.

“Not too many people can say they had that much time together,” he said.

McCormac said he was surprised and honored to find out that he would receive the award.

“That was great,” he said.

Anne-Claire Legendre, the consul general of France in New York, traveled to Ocean City on Bastille Day July 14 to present McCormac with a medal symbolizing his place as a Che-

valier of the National Order of the Legion of Honor. Chevalier is French for knight. The award is described as the highest given to civilians or members of the military. The award was created by Napoleon Bonaparte to honor men and women who have accomplished exceptional deeds for France and for the French people.

“We will never forget the bravery of American heroes such as Francis Mc Cormac who received this decoration,” reads a statement posed to the website of the French consul general, who represents French interests and promotes France in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey.

↘Continued from 13 Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian announced the honor as part of his weekly statement to residents and visitors, congratulating McCormac and describing him as part of the Ocean City community. Gillian was among those who gathered in the yard of McCormac’s daughter Maureen’s home in Ocean City to witness him receive the recognition.

Also attending the event were family members, friends, members of City Council and others, according to information released by the Morvay-Miley Post 524 of the American Legion.

Legion Post Commander Bob Marzulli was also present.

“In 2004, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of D-Day, thenFrench President Jacques Chirac, decided to honor all American World War II veterans who had fought on French soil,” reads a statement from the post.

McCormac said he did not know he was to receive the honor until he was told by Tom Tumelty, a trustee from the American Legion post.

“I entered the service in Massachusetts, and was then shipped-out to Scotland,” said McCormac. “From there, I landed on Omaha Beach, followed by deployments to Belgium and Germany, for the Battle of the

Bulge.”

So-called by news reporters because of the way the Allied lines bulged inward but did not rupture, the Battle of the Bulge was the final major German counteroffensive during the war, as the Allies rapidly advanced toward Germany.

In intense fighting in bitter cold

in thick forests of eastern Belgium, northeastern France and Luxembourg, the battle took place in December of 1944 into January of 1945.

American forces were hit hard, facing what were reportedly their highest losses of the war.

According to members of the American Legion post, during that

battle, McCormac’s radio relay unit was able to inform US Army units of a Nazi ruse. German soldiers were posing as US military police to misdirect allied troops, according to the statement from the American Legion.

“McCormac went on to see the liberation of German concentration camps before he eventually returned home to Philadelphia,” reads the statement.

McCormac said he was there when the allies reached the Buchenwald concentration camp in April of 1945. It was the largest of the camps within Germany’s pre-war borders and one of the first to be constructed.

“I saw a lot of people that were dead or half-dead. I saw what they had to live with, or live without,” he said. He spoke of a mass grave dug for those interned at the camp who did not survive, and of an infant in the camp who was the last to be buried, saying the soldiers held a ceremony for the infant. It was 76 years ago, but it is clearly difficult for McCormac to discuss.

Tens of thousands of Jews, Slavs, Communists, Gypsies and others died in the forced-labor camp, executed or starved to death.

During the war, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. He served

from 1942 until 1945.

After the war, he returned to his civilian job as an inspector for Philadelphia’s Philco Radio Corporation, a job he held until his retirement.

Before and after the war, he worked a total of 42-years for the company, working on some of the same equipment he used in the signal corps.

In comments to members of Ocean City High School students in 2019, he said he was pleased to be assigned to the signal corps rather than the infantry.

He described for the s tudent s his time in basic training, including enduring bitter cold that froze his toothpaste and gave him frostbite, before being sent to Florida for further training.

With extensive detail, and managing to crack up the class more than once, McCormac relayed his time in the military, including traveling from Scotland to southern England by truck and landing at Omaha Beach in northern France a few days after D-day.

“The Germans were still shooting at us from the higher cliffs above the beach,” he told the class, in a speech captured on video and posted to YouTube. He spoke of bombers and fighter planes filling the sky, clearing the way for the Allied advance.

He described eating a Christmas turkey dinner on a snow-covered truck fender as the Army planned to advance into Germany.

In comments made before presenting McCormac with his medal, Legendre compared Bastille Day on July 14 to the Fourth of July, and said America and France have long been allies.

“I am here to celebrate this friendship,” she said, describing McCormac as a true American hero from the greatest generation. She thanked him for his bravery in fighting Nazism.

He was only 22 when he entered the war, likely with little knowledge of France or Europe.

“Thanks to you, my country and also the world, enjoys democracy and enjoys liberty and this is something we want to continue fighting for,” she said.

To accept the honor, McCormac wore a shirt in the colors of the American flag, with a flag mask over his face to reduce the likelihood of spreading the coronavirus and a ball cap identifying him as a veteran of World War II. Ocean City Council member Bob Barr called McCormac the embodiment of the America spirit.

Asked for comment, as seen on a video taken by a family member, McCormac quickly relates the battles he saw.

“I had a good time,” he said, which drew an affectionate laugh.

“You’re still here,” says one of those who gathered in the yard.

“That’s the main part. I’m still here,” he agreed.

Memories of Summer Camp

D

uring a recent, late-night emotional moment sparked by summer camp pictures and hearing "The Circle Game" by Joni Mitchell for the first time in 25 years (which, if you have any emotions going on at all, those lyrics should come with a warning label), I remembered what it was like to have that feeling of home.

I lived for summer camp. It's when my weirdness wasn't so weird. Camp is where I would go and be accepted.

I had friends, boyfriends, secrets, arts and crafts, pierogies, bug juice, and song sessions. I realize now how important that time of self-exploration was for me.

I would wait all year, write letters back and forth with my friends, and even got to visit them sometimes.

I will tell you what, seeing a camp friend in the middle of the year was pretty much as close to perfect as it got for 14-year-old me.

I tried to think of how I would have reacted at 14 years old after a bad

day at school where no one talked to me, and I got made fun of to come home and find out CAMP IS CANCELED THIS YEAR. My heart goes out to everyone affected.

From the people who run the camp and work at it to make a living, to the parents who thought their summer break was almost upon them, too.

I have little advice or words of wisdom for this situation. I'm lost other than that, so I'll leave it to Joni Mitchell to take us home:

I also must confess I mixed business with pleasure, spending about two hours inside what was the cleanest thrift store I have ever been in. I spoke with two of the hard working individuals responsible for the uniquely philanthropic shopping experience, Director of development and Community Outreach Mary Moyer, and Store Manager, Irv Singer.

EH: What is the Arc? How long has it been around?

MM: The Arc started in 1961 by mostly a group of concerned parents of children with developmental and intellectual disabilities. They formed as a support group to discuss the issues they were being faced with. The group did a lot of advocacy work with local politicians and leaders to ensure that the issues they were concerned about were addressed.

Mostly focused on policies and human rights for people with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities. Through our support coordination, We help about 1,000 people in five counties in Southern New Jersey, primarily, in Atlantic County.

EH: This feels different then most other thrift stores I’ve been to. What’s different about it?

IS: When you walk into our store it's not like any other traditional thrift shop.

It’s more of a thrift shop ‘plus.’ As a thrift store, we obviously depend heavily on donations. But what’s exciting is now, a lot of our merchandise is brand new from great outlets such as QVC. EH: Why did you take the leap from a 5,000 square foot store, to this beautiful (and seemingly huge!) 10,000 square foot space?

IS: I saw an opportunity to bring in brand new merchandise. Now we are mixing donated items with our new items that we are able to sell for 75% off.

For example, we have brand name items that usually go for $30-$40 on QVC for around $8.

EH: What brands are you carrying at the moment?

IS: From swimwear, to jewelry and beyond. Some of the designers we carry right now are Mazu Swim, Quacker Fac-

tory, Lisa Robertson, Russell Athletics and Bob Mackie just to name a few.

EH: What are your most popular new items?

IS: We have new sheets, socks, underwear and jewelry, but our most popular new items are always our mattresses, which like our other furniture we will deliver to you (in Atlantic County). You don’t see many places like ours provide that service. We also will pick up furniture donations at no charge.

EH: The store feels very safe and very clean. How do you create this type of environment?

IS: It comes down to our employees.

We have the greatest staff, committed to customer service and safety. They take pride in the way the store looks, the care of the merchandise, how clean we keep the store, and the way we treat our customers. The same thing goes with our truck drivers. They are seriously committed to safety and customer service.

Nutrients and Pregnancy

A

pregnant woman needs more calcium, folic acid, protein, and iron than a woman who is not expecting. What a woman eats and drinks during pregnancy is her baby's main source of nourishment. So experts recommend that a mother-to-be's diet should include a variety of healthy foods and beverages to provide the important nutrients a baby needs for growth and development.

Folic acid, also known as folate when the nutrient is found in foods, is a B vitamin that is crucial in helping to prevent birth defects in the baby's brain and spinal cord, known as neural tube defects. I express to my pregnant moms-to-be clients that it may be hard to get the recommended amount of folic acid from diet alone.

For that reason, women who are trying to have a baby can take daily vitamin supplements containing 400 micrograms of folic acid per day for at least one month before becoming pregnant. During pregnancy, women are advised to increase the amount of folic acid to 600 micrograms a day, which is the same amount commonly found in a daily prenatal vitamin. Folate can also be found in these food sources: leafy green vegetables, fortified or enriched cereals, breads and pastas, beans, and citrus fruits.

Calcium is a vital mineral used to build babys’ bones and teeth. If a pregnant woman does not consume

enough calcium, the mineral will be drawn from the mother's stores in her bones and given to the baby to meet the extra demands of pregnancy. Pregnant women ages 19 and over need 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day. Pregnant teens, ages 14 to 18, need 1,300 milligrams daily according to ACOG. Calcium can be found in milk, yogurt, cheese, calcium-fortified juices and foods, sardines or salmon with bones, and some leafy greens such as kale and bok choy. Many dairy products are also fortified with Vitamin D, another nutrient that works with calcium to develop a baby's bones and teeth. Pregnant women should aim for 3 to 4 servings of dairy per day. Milk, yogurt, and cheese are good dietary sources of calcium, protein and vitamin D. Pregnant women need 27 milligrams of iron a day, which is double the amount needed by women who are not expecting. Additional iron is needed to make more blood to supply the baby with oxygen. Getting too little iron during pregnancy can lead to anemia, a condition resulting in fatigue and an increased risk of infections. Some foods that have iron are meat, poultry, fish, dried beans and peas, and iron-fortified cereal.

To increase the absorption of iron, try including a good source of vitamin C while eating iron-rich foods. For example, have a glass of orange juice at breakfast with an iron-fortified cereal.

More protein is needed during pregnancy, but most women don't have problems getting enough protein-rich foods in their diets. Protein is known as a “builder nutrient" because it helps to build important

organs for the baby, such as the brain and heart. Protein is found in meat, poultry, fish, dried beans and peas, eggs, nuts, and tofu.

Another important food group during pregnancy is whole grains.

Whole grains are an important source of energy in the diet and they also provide fiber, iron and B-vitamins. At least half of a pregnant woman's carbohydrate choices each day should come from whole grains, such as oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta or breads and brown rice.

In addition to a healthy diet, pregnant women also should take a daily prenatal vitamin to obtain some of the nutrients that are hard to get from foods alone such as folic acid and iron. For women who take chewable prenatal vitamins, check the product labels because chewables might not have sufficient iron levels in them.

Detailed information on healthy food choices and quantities is crucial to the developmental needs of the baby and continued health of the mother. Get the proper education for this amazing time in life. Good nutrition can ensure that moms-to-be and their babies will be healthy for a long time to come.

hat is balance training and why is it so important, especially as we age. It may have not crossed your mind, but you need good balance to do just about everything. I have been teaching water aerobics for about ten years but it wasn’t until I started filling in for an older adult class that I realized the importance of balance exercises. Just grabbing towels from a shelf or picking up a piece of luggage or trash bag all requires good balance. I decided that it was time to get certified in Older Adult to further educate myself on providing basic functional training with a strong focus on balance. It includes but is not limited to walking, getting out of a chair, and leaning over to tie your shoes. Strong muscles and being able to keep yourself steady make all the difference in those and many other things you do every day.

Balance training involves doing exercises that strengthen the muscles that help keep you upright, including your legs and core. Balance training involves

It helps the body to produce smooth, controlled movements with a lower risk of injury. How many older adults have you known that have fallen and incurred injury? Balance training helps reduce the risk of falls in older adults with balance problems and women with low bone mass. It also improves postural stability after a stroke.

Some of these exercises can be intense and some can be as simple as standing on one leg for a few seconds. You can use equipment that forces your body to stabilize itself, like a Bosu half-circle stability ball or a balance board.

Stand with your weight on one leg while raising the other leg to the side or behind you. Perform this move while holding onto a back of a chair. Putting your heel right in front of your toe, like walking a tightrope is a great one for balance and standing up and sitting down from a chair without using your hands is another one of my favorites. Over time, you can improve your balance with these exercises by: Holding the position for a a longer period of time, adding a little movement to a pose, closing your eyes and possibly letting go of your chair.

You can do balance exercises as often as you'd like, even every day. I would recommend adding in two days of strength training which also helps improve your balance by working the muscles that keep you stable. To improve your balance train, you don't have to run, jump, or do any other high-impact or high-intensity exercises. Balance training involves slow, methodical movements. It’s what I call, slow and controlled. You need strong core muscles for good balance. Many stability exercises will work your abs and other core muscles. Exercises in which you balance on one leg and then squat or bend forward also work the leg muscles.

The same balance exercises that work the legs also tone the glutes. There is no impact involved in doing balance exercises which is ideal for our older population.

Balance training is good for people of any age and fitness level. Athletes use balance training to become lighter on their feet and more powerful . A strong core enables us to do so much more. Through balance training, the body learns to quickly correct, but not overcompensate.

Through repeated training, reaction time decreases. Young athletes can also benefit from this type of training after an injury.

People suffering from chronic back pain can significantly benefit from balance training. If you have back pain,

balance work is one of the best ways to strengthen your core and prevent back pain from becoming a recurring issue.

It’ll help prevent more problems in the future. When you strengthen muscles, it also helps arthritis by giving more support to painful joints. This is also an ailment that we see in a lot of older adults.

You can do balance exercises on your own, with nothing more than a chair. They also can be done anywhere such as your backyard, on a beach, or in a park.

Balance training should be considered the cornerstone of quality movement.

Quality of life is the goal. We don’t want to spend our golden years rehabbing an injury. Many people seek yoga and /or Tai Chi classes for this very reason. Efficient movement requires a strong and stable core and you get that from balance training. It improves overall fitness and quality of life and isn't that what we need as we age? We need to stay healthy and injury free as we age and balance training is one of the ways to get us there.

America’s Keswick CEO Bill Welte at the Ocean City Tabernacle

T

he Ocean City Tabernacle will hold two services on Sunday, August 2. At 8:30 AM there will be an outdoor service with contemporary music. Please bring your own chairs if possible. Folding chairs are also available. Two large tents have been added to the property to provide a limited amount of shaded seating.

Umbrellas and small canopies are also welcome for additional shade. At 10:30 AM there will be an indoor service with traditional music including a hymn sing at 10:15 AM. South Jersey Brewery Keeps Pouring

ew Jersey’s microbreweries are facing unprecedented times. For months, the COVID-19 pandemic have forced taprooms across the state to close their doors, tours were suspended, and the sights and sounds of smiling faces were left at home. However, in the midst of summer, the microbrew business is still going strong. Outdoor seating has opened for patrons, and curbside pickup and delivery services are available.

New Jersey residents have a love for craft brews, and it shows. A recent study has shown that the state’s beer industry saw 43% growth, more than any other state in the country! In 2015 alone, there were only 40 breweries in the entire state. Today, that number has expanded to 121. In Atlantic and Cape May County alone, there are 16 microbreweries.

That’s good news for Matt McDevitt,

Tim Hanna and Chris Konicki. They are teachers at Mainland Regional High School and, together, founded Tuckahoe Brewing Company. The original idea was to open a microbrewery inside a Cape May restaurant. During the late 2000s, regulations prohibited microbreweries from distributing outside of brewpubs.

But in 2011, Tuckahoe opened their first location at a small facility in Ocean View, Cape May County.

Eventually, as the business grew in popularity, they partnered with architect Jim McAfee, expanding their operations to a 10,000 square foot building in Egg Harbor Township. Inside their giant warehouse, you’ll find a large tasting room with over a dozen brews on tap.

Weather permitting, they maintain an outdoor beer garden. You can also take a self-guided tour of their facility, where staff are hard at work producing up to 60 barrels of beer a week. The building houses two 15 barrel and 30 barrel fermenters. While enjoying your beverage, don’t forget to admire the unique artwork on the can. Each label was proudly designed by South Jersey artist Mike Bell.

Matt McDevitt describes his appreciation for beer. “I thought that homebrewing would be a fun project. It wasn’t something I ever thought would be a reality. It’s a passion.”

In recent months, many breweries have been forced to make adaptations to ensure their customers can enjoy their brands. For Tuckahoe Brewing Company, takeout options are also available onsite, with cans, growlers and crowlers available to-go. Their beer is also readily available in liquor stores across South Jersey. Some microbreweries have expanded to home delivery services, allowing customers to enjoy an ice cold beverage from the comfort of home.

Plant Your Pumpkins Today for Jack-O’-Lanterns this Fall

ou may have heard of Christmas in July, but how many of you are thinking about Halloween? Many pumpkin varieties take roughly 90-100 days to grow from seed to maturity, so if you’d like to grow your own jack-o'-lanterns, now is the time to plant. Though we associate pumpkins with cool fall weather, they are actually heat-loving plants.

While it might be fun to try saving seeds from the previous year’s pumpkins, be aware that various circumstances can produce a different fruit from the parent plant. Examine seed packets and choose seeds based on your specific needs. You can grow pumpkins for pumpkin pies, jack-o’-lanterns, or just for decorative purposes. But each of these uses may require a different variety of pumpkin.

Have some fun and plant different types for shape, color, and purpose. Pay special attention to the “days to maturity” and count backwards from when you want your pumpkins to be ready for use.

Choose a full-sun spot for your pumpkins, with plenty of room for

growth, since pumpkin vines can grow very long and large. Just like other members of the cucurbitaceae family including zucchini, cucumber, and squash, pumpkins are subject to powdery mildew. To decrease the conditions for this fungus, water your pumpkin plants early in the morning and close to the base of the vine. Add mulch around your pumpkin plants to conserve moisture and discourage weeds. As your pumpkin plants begin to flower, they will produce male flowers first to attract pollinators, followed by female flowers. When the pumpkins begin to develop, place a board or heavy cardboard under the fruit to keep them from rotting on the soil. You can rotate the pumpkins gently to help them form an even shape, but do so cautiously since the vines are fragile.

Sahl’s Father Son Farm in Galloway Township began planting their pumpkin crop the third week in June to be ready for customers this fall. Farmer Jeremy Sahl offers a few tips for successful pumpkin growing at home: plant seeds about an inch deep in the ground, mix in some garden fertilizer (which can be found at Butterhof’s Farm and Home

Supply in Egg Harbor City), fertilize again when you start to see the vines running, and keep the area around your plants weed free.

Pumpkins are packed with vitamins such as vitamins A and C, as well as fiber, minerals, and antioxidants. They are versatile and can be used in simple dishes or complex recipes. Full of flavor, pumpkins grown for consumption can be baked with a little olive oil and kosher salt for a tasty side dish. Of course, when it comes to pumpkin carving, don’t forget to roast the seeds for a nutritious snack.

When we use pumpkins as a decoration in the fall, squirrels think I am offer-

ing them a treat. It only takes days before they start their own type of carving and decorating. To protect your pumpkins, first wash with a diluted solution of one tablespoon bleach to one gallon water. This will also remove bacteria and slow the rotting process. Next apply a coat of clear spray sealer. This should deter squirrels and insects from making their own design in your pumpkins; be sure to spray the stem as well.

An Italian Food “Rule” Made To Be Broken

I

f you grew up in an Italian home, I’m sure your Nona or Mother told you never, ever mix seafood and cheese, and if you did it in front of them I’m sure they whisked your dish away faster than you could say you were sorry. Did you ever ask why the two shouldn’t be mixed? And where did this rule begin?

And are there exceptions? Of course there are!

Throughout the world there are many examples of dishes combining seafood and cheese. In Greece they serve Garides Saganaki (broiled shrimp, tomatoes and feta cheese); France has Moules au Roquefort (mussels, white wine and strong blue cheese); Mexico serves fish tacos with chihuahua cheese; and here in the United States we enjoy bagels with lox and cream cheese. And who doesn’t like Lobster Thermidor, made with both Parmesan and Gruyere cheeses, or Crab au Gratin. And what

about pizza with anchovies!

This ancient Italian culinary doctrine may have gotten started because of geography. The primary Italian cheese-making regions such as Piedmont, Lombardy and Veneto are all landlocked and quite distant from the sea. Their cuisines include many kinds of cheeses in their recipes, including Grana Padano and Asiago. So, they would never have thought to mix cheese and seafood.

In regions close to the sea, it is thought that people didn’t mix cheese and seafood because they thought the strong flavor of cheeses would overpower seafood’s delicate flavor.

In fact, some restaurants here in the United States print “no cheese served on fish” on their menus. And I know of a restaurant in Philadelphia where the owner comes to each table

and tells customers he will not supply Parmesan cheese when asked if the diners order a seafood dish. True story!

But there are two places in Italy which made an exception to this “rule” – Sicily and Sardinia. Both of these islands have a history of dairy, primarily from sheep, and cheesemaking. And, of course, they are surrounded by the sea. So they have always combined cheese and seafood.

In fact, according to the website Tuscan Traveler, Robert Trachtenberg, writing Just Grate in the NY Times, found the oldest surviving “Sicilian recipe — from around 400 B.C. — for fish: ‘Gut. Discard the head, rinse, slice; add cheese and oil.’”

At my restaurant, I serve a Sardinian shrimp and cheese dish that is one of our best sellers. Shrimp Sardagola includes both Parmesan and ricotta cheeses. Jumbo shrimp are dredged in Parmesan cheese and sautéed just until the shrimp are cooked, then added to a sauce made with fresh

basil, garlic, roasted cherry tomatoes, scallions, white wine, and lemon zest. In true Sardinian tradition, ricotta cheese is folded into the sauce instead of cream, and the entire dish is served over linguine.

Sassafras! Getting to the Root of Things in the Garden

sn’t it strange how certain scents or flavors can send you on a trip down memory lane?

I grow nostalgic when I think about the very distinctive taste of sassafras tea that my Uncle Paul (my dad’s brother) made for us back in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. In those days, I was too young to think about how they acquired this uniquely flavorful tea. How delighted I was to find out that so many years later, sassafras is growing in my own back yard here in South Jersey. Just rubbing the mitten-like leaves together releases the scent that brings me back to those days and makes me think of my dad and uncle who are no longer with us.

Unfortunately, I can’t ask for their recipe, but a little internet research revealed that it’s fairly easy to make.

most herbal teas, sassafras tea is made from young sassafras roots. I followed a few recipes I found online and boiled the clean chopped roots with a few cinnamon sticks. Just seeing that reddish brown color again is exciting. My venture into sassafras tea-making wasn’t exactly as I remember it, but it’s nice to know I can recreate part of that memory.

The joke will be on me if I find out some day that they were using storebought tea bags all along.

Did you know that sassafras roots were one of the main ingredients in root beer? Philadelphia pharmacist Charles Elmer Hires is credited with being one of the earliest promoters of commercially prepared root beer, which was manufactured and distributed as Hires Root Beer. As the story goes, he first discovered the flavor while honeymooning with his new bride in New Jersey.

Their hotel hostess had served them “root tea” that she had made. Originally, Hires sold a dry version that was mixed with yeast and fermented, thus the name root “beer”. Various types of “small beers” using different types of herbs and bark such as birch

In the 1960s, the Food and Drug Administration banned safrole, which is found in sassafras oil, declaring it to have carcinogenic qualities. Since that time, most commercial root beers are flavored with artificial sassafras flavoring, although some use sassafras with the safrole removed.

You may have heard of sarsaparilla, a drink reminiscent of the Old West, that once used a mixture of sassafras roots and the sarsaparilla vine (Smilax ornata), which was considered by Native Americans to have medicinal properties. Though today’s sarsaparilla is usually made with artificial ingredients to replace the

sassafras, original recipes often contained birch oil.

That brings us back east to birch beer, which is made in a similar process to that of sassafras tea and sarsaparilla, but without the sassafras root, and therefore, without safrole.

Instead it can be made with the bark or sap of the birch tree. Though most popular in Pennsylvania, birch beer can readily be found in South Jersey. Many returning tourists look forward to washing down their boardwalk pizza with a cup of birch beer, that they can’t find back home.

While taking in the salt air, they too will form memories triggered by a taste or smell and will be nostalgic for their days at the Jersey Shore.

Zebra Foal Born at the Cape May County Zoo

here is a new addition at the Zoo that has the staff and visitors very excited.

Zebra's Ziggy and Greta welcomed to the Zoo family a female foal on Monday night.

While the Veterinarians knew Greta was expecting, they were watching for the delivery. Gestation is about

Zebra Foal Born at Cape May County Zoo Currently, the Zoo has one male and two females zebras. Ziggy, the stallion, was born in Michigan in 2012 and called our Zoo home in 2018.

Gracie was born at the Zoo on June 10th, 2003 and, Greta, also born at the Zoo on June 22, 2000. A group of zebras is called a zeal or a dazzle.

Zebras are not considered endangered, they have no major threats, but habitat loss and over hunting have led to localized declines. While not specifically protected they are common in many national parks such as Kruger National Park which is protected.

"The Zoo staff is planning to conduct a naming contest and the public will be encouraged to enter and help name the new addition. I encourage residents and visitors alike to come out and enjoy the Parks and Zoo and meet our new arrival. The Cape May County Zoo is one of the biggest attractions that appeal to visitors of all ages. Our Zoo staff is doing a tremendous job caring for the animals and grounds. Our award-winning Zoo is AZA and ZAA accredited and well known throughout the state and beyond.", Hayes added.

The Cape May County Zoo is open daily from 10 am until 4:30 pm during the summer months. The Park is open from 7 am until dusk. The Park and Zoo are free, donations are accepted and greatly appreciated.

There are a lot of theories floating around as to the purpose of the stripes, some including a type of camouflage and others that deter bugs. Some Scientists believe the stripes confuse predators because they can't determine one individual from the next, while others believe and have even done studies that the stripes deter biting insects because the stripes disrupt the attractive pattern to insects.

IUCN Status: Least Concern 2008.

was so sure I was going to have happy “sports” news to start this column off this week.

Baseball was back, the NBA and the NHL are not far behind, it was shaping up to be a glorious column.

And then the Marlins played the Phillies last Sunday at Citizens Bank Park missing players because of COVID-19.

That changes the entire tone of this week’s piece.

Since I last wrote, the Phillies have played three actual games and lost two of them. That’s not the big story though, as COVID-19 has hamstrung the Miami Marlins and potentially the Phillies as well. The Flyers have left for Toronto and are about to embark on their return to hockey. The Sixers have played a few exhibition games “inside the bubble” in Orlando and seem to be safe and healthy so far.

On the same day the Marlins-Phillies news broke, the Eagles were right down the street getting ready to welcome the veterans back for training camp. A guy named Thompson won

on the PGA Tour…no relation…and the Philadelphia Union continue to be a source of enjoyment for me. Finally, on the local level, I’ve had the opportunity to watch three games in-person so far in the Atlantic County Baseball League and what a joy that has been to sit outside, social distancing, and enjoy wood-bat baseball!

From the entertainment world, “Sunday Game Night” on ABC continues to be a hit in my household.

Plus, we sure are enjoying a show that highlights people who get their hands dirty for a living. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● In a normal situation, I’d be complaining that the Phillies only beat the Marlins once in the three games they faced them, but as we know, this is not a normal situation. Since beating the Phils 11-6 on Sunday at CBP, the Marlins have 11 of 33 players and two coaches testing positive for COVID-19. The Marlins are staying quarantined in a Center City hotel, and the out-

break has affected both teams.

The Phillies had to postpone their game with the Yankees on Monday, while the Marlins couldn’t play their home opener against the Orioles. As I write this, the situation is the same for both teams for Tuesday games.

According to reports, the Marlins conducted a team text message and decided to go ahead and play on Sunday, despite knowing that 3-4 of their teammates were positive for COVID-19. This has a lot of folks up in arms, as they are wondering where Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred is during all this. Where is his leadership? Some folks want him fired. I simply think that the

baseball model clearly has more risks than say hockey or basketball, which are using the “bubble” method to make things work.

One positive note is that none of the Phillies players or coaches have tested positive so far. Bryce Harper wore a mask when on the bases in Sunday’s game. Rhys Hoskins wore a mask any time that someone got on first base and he had to hold them on. I’m hoping the Marlins outbreak won’t cause the end of the 60-game season, but I also think that masks need to be worn as much as possible. The home plate umpire wore a mask under his….mask, for example.

One last item on the Phillies and that’s the product on the field.

I was pretty optimistic about their chances in a short 60-game stretch, but as I write this, I don’t think they’ll win a lot of ballgames with the bullpen as currently constructed. I hope I’m wrong, but Cole Irvin came into Sunday’s game and was awful. Irvin gave up four runs on five hits and now has an ERA of 36.00! Reggie McClain wasn’t much better in the one inning that he pitched. And remember Nick Pivetta? Supposed to be a solid arm that would be a rising star? The only thing rising is his ERA as well as he gave up two hits and two runs in three and a third.

Don’t even get me started on the starter, Vince Velasquez. Perhaps the most frustrating player on the Phillies for me the last couple of years. He comes into a ballgame with electric stuff and all of a sudden, he starts leaving pitches in the fat part of the plate. His first inning against the Marlins was outstanding. Unfortunately, he had to go back out there for the Top of the 2nd, where they tied it up at 4-4, and by the 3rd, after 60 pitches, he was done. Word is, the Phillies are thinking of bringing up minor-league phenom Spencer Howard to give him a try at the 5th spot in the rotation. I’m all for that, as clearly “Vinny Velo” is NOT getting it done!

Let’s turn to hockey now as the Flyers are in Toronto and “inside the bubble” that the NHL has set up. Granted, it’s a smaller sample size, but check out these numbers.

Zero positive virus cases reported in the NHL last week. The league administered a total of 4,256 tests to more than 800 players from July 18-25 and there were zero positive virus cases reported. Now, that’s an example of how a bubble

works, and works effectively!

There was a brief scare last week when the Flyers reconvened in Voorhees for “summer camp” and goalie Carter Hart left practice with what was reported as a lower back injury. Thankfully, he returned in a day or two and appears to be okay. If the Flyers are going to make a run in this “return to hockey”, they’re going to need their 21-year-old goalie to be in tip-top shape.

My last Flyers item is on Oskar Linblom as he was officially added to the active roster as one of the 17 forwards the Flyers can use during the playoffs. What a great story as Linblom finished his chemotherapy treatments on July 2nd, and is fit enough to rejoin the team less than seven months after being diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma. He’ll turn 24 on August 15th and his being on the playoff roster has to be a boost to all his teammates for sure.

The Flyers play an exhibition game against Pittsburgh today as I write this (7/28) and then begin a round-robin playoff seeding format of games on August 2nd against the Boston Bruins. The Flyers play the Washington Capitals on August 6th and the Tampa Bay Lightning on August 9th to determine which of the top 4 seeds they will lock in. (they are currently 4th and can only improve).

Moving on to basketball now where the Sixers have stayed healthy for the most part “inside the bubble” in Orlando. They have played two exhibition games so far, and won the first, but lost the second. The Sixers beat Memphis 90-83, but lost 102-97 to Oklahoma City, but even so, those scores are a bit deceiving. In both games, the Sixers starters outplayed their opponents. Memphis’ five starters had a combined plus-17 rating, while the Sixers starters were plus-43. The Sixers led by as many as 29 points. Against OKC, the Sixers led by as many as 24 points. The Sixers starters were a combined plus-69 while OKC’s five starters were a combined minus-68. Bottom line? The Sixers starters look pretty darn good!

Key story lines from Orlando have been the domination of Ben Simmons at the power forward position and the emergence of Shake Milton as a true NBA point guard who can direct the ebb and flow of a game.

On Saturday August 1st, the 76ers will open with the first of their remaining eight regular-season “seed” games when they take on the Indiana Pacers. The games, which are taking place in a “bubble” in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, actually look pretty good on television and that might get better when virtual crowds are added during the seed games. Clap your hands...Sixers basketball is back!

Which brings us to the Eagles as on the same morning the Phillies were dealing with a COVID-19 outbreak within the Miami Marlins, the Eagles were right up the street at the NovaCare Complex getting ready to welcome the veterans and rest of the team back for training camp. Head coach Doug Pederson says he feels “extremely safe” with the way things are being handled, but it is going to be really interesting to see how the NFL overall does in keeping players, coaches & team personnel safe while trying to still hold a “normal” season.

See, here’s the thing, roster size, the physical nature of the game, and the inability to create a "bubble" make the NFL's return trickier than that of baseball, basketball or hockey. According to Eagles running back Boston Scott, he will need to test negative twice before he really does anything. “Test the first day, take a day off, completely away from the building, test again, take another day off away from the building, and then, based on two negative tests, we’ll be able to proceed from there,” he said.

Once camp actually starts, players are to be tested every day for at least the first two weeks. They won’t be practicing the way they normally would during that period, given that the full 2020 squad will be gathering for the first time and has no base of spring work to draw upon.

Teams can start with as many as 90 players, though they must be down to 80 by Aug. 16. With no preseason games this year, a lot of the roster padding isn’t necessary; having huge rosters only makes it tougher to keep everyone safe.

There are three tiers of access for people interacting with the players, and everyone involved will be carefully monitored. But unlike the NBA and the NHL, which are dealing with much smaller rosters and a shorter time period before concluding their seasons, NFL teams won’t be in any sort of 24-hour bubble. Everyone goes home at night, though there is a hotel option. Will this work? Only time will tell.

From golf, I have to admit that I did not watch a lot of the 3M Open from Blaine, Minnesota last week.

That said, I did see that Michael Thompson (no relation) won for the first time in seven years by shooting a 4-under par 67 and posting a two-stroke victory over Adam Long. With no gallery or fans around the 18th green, it was still nice to see Thompson get a little choked up as he realized all the benefits that come with a PGA Tour win. He secures his playing status for two years. He gets into the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, the Masters and more. He rocked up the FedEx Cup standings from 151st to 39th and is now on the way to Tennessee for this week’s World Golf Championship event. Way to go Michael! (And I’m not just saying that because he’s a Thompson)

One last item from golf and that’s about Tiger Woods. Tiger has announced that he will not play in the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Classic this week in Memphis. That’s huge news, as Tiger has only played in four tournament rounds since February and the PGA starts the following week at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. Woods did make the cut at the Memorial, but shot 76 twice out of four rounds, and finished tied for 40th. Tiger had some back tightness in the second round, and I fear that we just won’t see much of the “old Tiger” anymore.

Who knows, I write that sentence and maybe he’ll go out and shine at Augusta for the Masters in the fall.

Now, I didn’t watch the entire match, but I turned on the Philadelphia Union against the New England Revolution the other night just in time to see the only goal scored in the match. Fortunately it was for the Union, and they are now through to the Round of 8 in Florida for the MLS return. I think it’s great to see, and I will definitely tune in for at least some of their quarterfinal match against Sporting Kansas City on Thursday night (7/30).

My last sports item is about the locally run ACBL, or Atlantic County Baseball League. There was some doubt that the league would be able to start its 135th season of wood-bat only baseball, because of COVID-19. However, league president & Margate Hurricanes manager Yogi Hiltner was able to create a 12-game regular season schedule and a round-robin playoff format. The eight teams in the league are the defending champion Margate Hurricanes, 2019 runner-up Northfield, the Margate Green Wave, Hammonton, Absecon, Ventnor, Ocean City and Egg Harbor City.

My girlfriend’s son, Michael and I have now been to three games as of the writing of this column and for my money, there’s nothing better than watching live baseball with wood bats. We watched a classic between Margate and Hammonton the other night at the Jerome Avenue Complex and it had everything you wanted.

Home runs, lead changes, drama, and great camaraderie too. According to Hiltner, the league has been held every year except the years of World War I and World War II. Now that’s some history!

Get out and watch your local team play a game. Most games start at 7p (weather permitting) and are absolutely free to attend. Bring your chair, bring your mask, and some great baseball.

As usual, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as we can’t get enough of the “Sunday Game Night” block that they’ve been running on 6abc. Although we love Family Feud, we’re not in love with what they call “celebrities” these days, so we haven’t watched a lot of that, but “Press Your Luck” and “Match Game” are must-see in our household.

Especially “Match Game”. I think Alec Baldwin was born to be the host of this show. His banter with the contestants and celebrities, along with the ability to poke fun at himself makes this a perfect 10 pm watch on a Sunday night.

Finally, allow me to plug “Tough as Nails” one more time as Michael pointed out to me that drywall and sheetrock are basically the same thing I wrote about it last time. The show is on CBS on Wednesday nights and there have

only been four episodes, so you have time to catch up. Inspired by executive producer and host Phil Keoghan's working-class family, "Tough as Nails" is about competitors who consider the calluses on their hands a badge of honor.

They are tested for their strength, endurance, agility and mental toughness in challenges that take place in the real world. One by one, they are eliminated until the winner is named. The series proves that toughness comes in all shapes and sizes, and it celebrates Americans who don't think twice about working long hard hours and getting their hands dirty to keep their country running. We just love it!

A Short History of U.S. Paper Money

hore Local brought together a list of words which you probably won’t need in everyday conversation but may expand your vocabulary with weird and wonderful gems. This week’s lesson starts with unusual words that start with F.

T

he first issuance of paper money in the colonies was the printing of notes by the province of Massachusetts Bay to pay for a military expedition. One by one the other colonies followed by printing their own notes to pay for expenses. Initially they followed the British pound-sterling system, but a Massachusetts pound was not the same as a Pennsylvania pound and always less than the British pound. Since Spanish coins circulated freely in the colonies, some colonies started placing the denomination in Spanish milled dollars (8 reales or “pieces of eight”). Although they were issued in terms of pounds or milled dollars, they were not intended to be exchanged for hard money, only to be used as payment.

In June of 1775, the Second Continental Congress authorized the printing of $2 million in the form of Continental currency.

Although the Declaration of Independence had not yet been written, it was evident that a breach from England would occur and money was needed to finance the result. After July 4th, 1776 and the ensuing years of war with England, some $240 million dollars of Continental currency was printed to finance the war. Unfortunately, with inflation and the uncertainty of success, the value declined to where they were worthless, hence the term “not worth a Continental”. Fortunately for those soldiers and merchants who accepted Continental notes, they were ultimately redeemed, albeit in some cases, many years later.

During the early 1800’s after the creation of the United States and the building of the Philadelphia mint, most transactions were in gold and silver, not just our own currency, but also that from other countries. In fact, Spanish 8 reales traded as legal tender dollars until 1857. However, as a means to facilitate monetary transactions, banks were created both as a depository for hard cash and to issue paper money which would be easier to transport. The premise was simple, a bank could receive a charter and would hold in reserve enough gold and silver to back up the paper money they printed. This era lasted until the Civil War and is known as the Broken Bank period and the currency as obsolete notes.

they had in reserve to back up the notes. A run on the bank to exchange the currency for gold or silver would cause it to go broke, hence the term “Broken Bank Note”.

A second problem was the size of the country with no direct means of communication. Letters, which were the main means of communication could take days, even weeks to reach their destination, so someone in Virginia receiving a note from Boston would have no way to determine if the note was good or not, and in many cases it wasn’t. The number of banks created during this period was huge, with some being in adjoining towns. Also, a bank could fail one week and be resurrected the next with a new name but the same officers.

The third problem was counterfeiting.

Some counterfeiters would design notes on fictious banks at far away locations and pass them to unsuspecting people. As a result, the trust level for paper money was quite low.

Then came the Civil War and the Unions’ need for money.

My Personal Covid 19 Problems

ver the past few weeks. I have wrote several articles dealing with Covid 19 and people’s struggles. I have discussed the mental effects with Tamu Lane and how and why Black people are affected more often by the disease itself.

In a few weeks I will try and answer some ongoing questions as we prepare to go into our 3rd season (fall) and second school year with Covid 19.

However, I wanted to take a few moments to share someCif my personal thoughts and fears myself regarding COVID-19. ● No matter how many times I hear “We’re All In This Together.” I feel I’m the only one frustrated and angry.

Though I do not want to lose anyone else to Covid 19, I didn’t take the news of the shut down well. The mask thing I can take or leave but the social distance/isolation is like prison to me.

I feel like I worked so hard to have a good life and now I can’t enjoy it. ● I am not optimistic at this point. I hear the words “this too will pass.” I, however, believe really the fear being fanned

by Covid 19, will not pass. I often think that church is over, school is over, News Years Eves, Christmas’ and Thanksgiving may be done for the next ten years or so. When people with no evidence

say I’m wrong, I answer, ”I hope I am wrong...I pray you’re right.” At the time of this writing I do not think I’m wrong. ● I’m still in mourning. When I interviewed Tuman Lane we discussed the fact that people with successful lives, summer plans and people that hate other people making choices for them “are in a state of mourning.” I am mourning the trips I had planned, the good people I would love to see, but I now have to Zoom with instead, the fact I have not been hugged since early March and I feel that I will not be hugged again for 10 years. ● I wish I could take off one or two days from Covid 19 watch. This has been like a 24 hour job. All the rules you have to remember for showering, washing hands, wearing gloves and masks, wiping down the food you bring in the house, etc…. ● No Sleep. I am one of the people that almost hates to sleep. When I wake up….Kobe Bryant is still dead and I still am confined to an invisible “pen.”

The days of the week? It’s hard to care about the days when there is nothing happening worth looking forward to this weekend...or next or the next.

This was not a column meant to bring you down. However, if you’re like me and you’re coming to terms with your prolonged misery (as well as Covid everywhere) You may not “love” my company... but you have it anyway (from at least 6 feet away.)

Tennessee Avenue has been called the “Boubon Street” of Atlantic City and it has become impossible to talk about any part of Atlantic City without mentioning this infamous street. Tennessee Avenue Beer hall is perhaps the center piece with its selection of 40 draught craft beers, 60 canned beers, and award-winning gastropub menu.

Steel Pier is one of the most recognized locations of the Atlantic City skyline. The huge Ferris wheel which

encompasses a large part of any view of the city is also a great place to get some beautiful shots of AC, further out to sea than if you were just in a casino bar. Steel Pier is also the place to go for boardwalk food. I am talking funnel cakes, Dippin’ Dots, pizza, and dollar dogs. There is even the opportunity to take a helicopter ride which will give you an unforgettable birdseye experience of Atlantic City.

Of course, there is nothing better than spending the day at the beach on a beautiful summer’s day. We are so lucky to live right by a gorgeous beach where we can bring our beach chairs, kick back, and relax all day while soaking in those rays. Likewise, nothing can top the pure enjoyment of walking down our legendary boardwalk and breathing in the salty air with an ice cream or piece of salt water taffy. I don’t know about you, but sometimes just taking a moment to enjoy everything our area has to offer reminds me of what an incredible blessing it is to have so much awesomeness right in our backyard.
