I

f you were at the beach last weekend, you certainly noticed an eerie fog overhead while sunny blue skies dominated to the west. At times, temperatures dropped when the low clouds won out against the sun and spiked as sunshine temporarily burned away the fog.

Hazy skies are caused by a combi-

nation of hot air temperatures, cooler ocean waters, and higher dewpoints due to tropical moisture streaming in from the south, forecasters say. The fog develops when warmer air moves over the cooler waters, according to the National Weather Service. Adding in tropical moisture, dewpoints rise, resulting in more water vapor in the atmosphere.

2020 has been one sour lemon!

Like the saying goes though, when life gives you lemons, make lemonade.

If there is one thing I've learned from COVID-19, it is the value of adaptability and "making the most of it."

So many things we took for granted have been ripped away from us for what is proving to be a long time.

Simple pleasures like going to the movies, indoor dining or sitting in a coffee shop are still restricted. Half of it doesn't even seem to make sense.

But who am I to decide? Some things, even most things in life I can't control.

I can only control my response. It turns out though, that focusing on our response rather than ruminating on the problem, is a key ingredient in good lemonade. I could waste a whole lot of time talking about what's wrong, but that wouldn't change a thing.

There are so many examples of folks doing literally "whatever they have to do" in order to adapt to our "new normal." For some it's setting up tents to create outdoor dining areas. For others it's coordinating outdoor fitness classes. It looks different for each of us, but we find a way to get it done.

Discover Lake Lenape

ocated within Hamilton Township, Mays Landing is a town that is rich in culture and history. One can spend the day walking Historic Main Street, dining at a waterfront restaurant, or taking in the scenery this extraordinary place provides. But did you know about Lake Lenape?

Travel just northwest from the center of Downtown Mays Landing and you will find Lake Lenape. Every year, thousands flock to this scenic waterfront to enjoy a wide array of activities.

One can spend a day relaxing by the beach, boating, kayaking, or having a friendly picnic.

Located just off of Park Road, you will find Lake Lenape Park East.

It is a perfect spot to relax and have fun with volleyball courts, picnic tables and playground.

On any summer day, the park grounds are sprawling with outdoor festivities, such as the South Jersey Wine Festival, and the annual Dragon Boat Festival held in July. Hosted by Gilda’s Club of South Jersey, this event attracts teams from all across the region in an effort to support cancer survivors and patients.

Bring your camera and capture the most picturesque view of the historic lighthouse. The Lake Lenape lighthouse was built in 1939 by Herman Dehn Sr. It stands 65 feet tall and was built using hand tools and assistance from neighborhood kids. For many years, locals called it the “singing

tower” because of hymns that played from speakers installed at the top of the tower.

Just down the road from Lenape Park East is The Cove, a small but quaint beach, open to the public every summer.

Seasonal beach tags and wristbands are available by visiting Mays Landing Town Hall or the Hamilton Township website.

If you’re looking to enjoy all of the amenities of nature, Lenape Park West is for you. The park is located off of 6303 Old Harding Highway, off of County Road 559, and encompasses almost 2,000 acres of land. Here, you can go on a nature excursion, take in miles of hiking and mountain

bike trails, go fishing with your family, or enjoy a day out on the lake with your boat, canoe or kayak. Or, pack a lunch and take in the scenery this waterfront park has to offer.

With its long list of waterfront activities and miles of open water, Lake Lenape is the gem that makes Mays Landing a special place to live and visit. Ocean City Tabernacle Hosts Ranch Hope Founder Dave Bailey

T

he Ocean City Tabernacle will continue outdoor worship with one service at 9:00 AM this Sunday, July 26. Social distancing and other appropriate safety measures will be observed. Please bring your own chairs if possible. Folding chairs are also available. Two large tents have been added to the property to provide a limited amount of shaded seating. Umbrellas and small canopies are also welcome for additional shade.

The speaker will be Rev. Dave Bailey, founder of Ranch Hope in Alloway, NJ. Ranch Hope has met the needs of adolescent boys via structured programming in a residential setting for 45 years. Over time, the Ranch has become an alternative for child protective services, as well as the Family Court System. The Ranch now has the capacity to care for 57 boys and 12 girls, as well as day school

students, who experience troubled home lives, difficulty in the community and school, and who are in need of a nurturing community setting as opposed to a correctional environment.

Rev. Bailey has always defined Hope as “An Expectation of Success.” This is Ranch Hope’s motto and words he lives by every day.

Also, on Sunday morning, the Tabernacle will host 8:00 AM worship on the boardwalk at the Music Pier with acoustic contemporary music and a message from Bob Evans. Bob is the former president of BCM International, a missions agency formed in Philadelphia in 1936 with more than 850 missionaries serving in over 50 countries through evangelism, church planting, discipleship, leadership training and publishing.

NJDEP Report Details the Impacts of Climate Change on the State

T

he New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) released its first Scientific Report on Climate Change in June. The report covers the latest and most reliable science to explain how climate change will impact New Jersey.

Current Impacts New Jersey is already experiencing the effects of a changing climate through increasingly mild winters, more intense rainfalls, flooding along inland streams and rivers, and more tidal flooding along our coast.

The Report’s Executive Summary notes that increasing greenhouse gas concentrations have contributed to a 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit increase in New Jersey’s average temperature. This is a faster increase than the rest of the Northeast region and the world.

Another item of note is that tidal flooding events have already increased. These events occurred less than once per year in the 1950s; between 2007 and 2016, they occurred an average of eight times per year.

What’s to Come The report suggests that projected

warming will result in longer and more frequent heat waves. Annual precipitation is also expected to increase by 2050 and occur in more intense rain events that could result in an increase in localized flooding. Sea level rise will also contribute to increased coastal flooding during sunny days and storm events, which would impact infrastructure, residents and businesses.

How We’re Preparing Now The Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) operates critical infrastructure that must be protected from the impacts of climate change. Our Wastewater Treatment Plant in Atlantic City, NJ, treats an average of 28 million gallons of wastewater every day, which is essential to keeping our local waterways clean. To protect the facility during future storm events, ACUA has implemented multiple resiliency projects including the construction of a seawall around the facility, investments in inflatable barriers and portable generators, upgrades to emergency power systems and more.

These resiliency measures are part of ACUA’s ongoing work to meet the needs of our community while protecting the environment. Other green initiatives include using renewable energy produced by wind

turbines and solar panels to operate our wastewater treatment plant, powering our Solid Waste facility in Egg Harbor Township with electricity created from landfill gas and greening our fleet of vehicles by converting collection trucks to compressed natural gas (CNG) and using electric vehicles that plug in at our publicly accessible charging stations.

What You Can Do The NJDEP report underlines the importance of the ongoing work municipalities, green teams and local organizations are doing to protect the environment. We can all do our part by reducing the amount

of waste we create, recycling correctly, choosing renewable energy and more.

Thinking about climate change can be overwhelming, but this report helps us understand how our region will be affected. The impacts of climate change threaten our property, public health, safety and economy. Gaining an understanding of the impact helps the State better prepare and adapt for the future.

Scents that bring you back

H

ave you ever experienced a smell or an aroma which triggered a memory from your past? If I pass by the open door of a beauty salon, I am transported back to the time spent at my father’s salon in Margate.

The strong smell of onions from a sub shop reminds me of working at the Margate Sub shop so I could spend time with my future wife.

What I was unprepared for, occurred on a walk to the boardwalk. The smell of fiberglass and resin wafted across me from a home having some repairs done. It is a unique scent that one does not come across very often during the course of a normal day. I was immediately transported back to1966 when I was sixteen and small privately owned surf shops dotted our area. That smell of resin from surfboard repairs would hit you as soon as you entered the store. It was a time when the shops were stocked more with surfboards and bathing suits than accessories. Shops that came to mind was Curcio’s near the old Atlantic City High School, Reef Surf shop in Margate and Surfer’s Supply in Ocean City. Sometimes it was worth the trip to Ocean City for just a bar of wax to share time with the quirky owner, George who always made you feel as if you were friends all your life. 1966 was when the iconic surfing movie Endless Summer hit the theaters and it was the start of

the surfing boom. By today’s standards, the movie was pretty amateurish. It was a travelogue about surfers traveling the globe searching for the perfect wave. There was no dialogue, just narration and a soundtrack that became synonymous with surfing.

Then there were the Beach Boys, their music and their surfing vibe. It was the perfect storm. My friend had his cousin in from out of town. He was a blond hair, blue eyes 14 year old who surfed. We went to see Endless Summer together and the next day my friend and I bought surfboards.

There were no surfing lessons back then nor surfing camps. We learned by trial and error; lots of errors.

G oing “over the falls” or “pearling” when the nose dug in launching the surfer forward and the board into the air was the most humiliating. These boards were over nine feet long and heavy.

There were also no leashes. On a big day, is was frustrating to wipeout far from the beach and see your board wash all the way in. We became proficient swimmers out of necessity. It was not just the surfing that appealed to us but also the “surfer’s life” as we imagined it. We spent the weekend living and sleeping in my friend’s dank basement near the beach which by today’s standards was probably rife with mold. In that basement, we relived the day’s surfing experiences trying to one-up each other about the best rides and the worst wipeouts. In the morning, we would stick the boards in the back of the convertible and cruise Absecon Island for our perfect wave. It did not matter if the wave was not found. Inevitably, what we did find were more stories to share in that Ventnor basement.

Spiking Your Metabolism

etabolism is a term that describes all the chemical reactions in your body. These chemical reactions keep your body alive and functioning. However, the word metabolism is often used interchangeably with metabolic rate, or the number of calories you burn. The higher it is, the more calories you burn and the easier it is to lose weight and keep it off. Having a high metabolism can also give you energy and make you feel better.

Eating food can increase your metabolism for a few hours. This is called the thermic effect of food (TEF). It's caused by the extra calories required to digest, absorb and process the nutrients in your meal. Protein causes the largest rise in TEF. It increases your metabolic rate by 15–30%, compared to 5–10% for carbs and 0–3% for fat. Eating protein has also been shown to help you feel more full and prevent you from overeating .

I find that people were likely to eat around 441 fewer calories per day when protein made up 30% of their diet. Eating more protein can also reduce the drop in metabolism often associated with losing fat. Eating more protein can boost your metabolism so that you burn more calories.

It can also help you eat less.

Drink your water! People who drink water instead of sugary drinks are more successful at losing weight and keeping it off. This is because sugary drinks contain calories, so replacing them with water automatically reduces your calorie intake. However, drinking water may also temporarily speed up your metabolism.

Drinking 17 ounces of water increases resting metabolism by 10–30% for about an hour. This calorie-burning effect may be even greater if

you drink cold water, as your body uses energy to heat it up to body temperature. Water can also help fill you up. Drinking water a half an hour before you eat can help you eat less. It’s proven that overweight adults who drink half a liter of water before their meals lost 44% more weight than those who didn't.

High intensity training involves quick and very intense bursts of activity. It can help you burn more fat by increasing your metabolic rate, even after your workout has finished. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat, and building muscle can help increase your metabolism. This means you will burn more calories each day, even at rest. Lifting weights will also help you retain muscle and combat the drop in metabolism that can occur during weight loss. Higher amounts of muscle will result in a higher metabolism.

Stop sitting. Long periods of sitting burn fewer calories and can lead to weight gain. In fact, compared to sitting, an afternoon of standing up at work can burn an extra 174 calories. If you have a desk job, try standing up for short periods to break up the length of time you spend sitting down. You can also invest in a standing desk.

Green tea has been shown to increase metabolism by 4–5x. Teas help convert some of the fat stored in your body into free fatty acids, which may increase fat burning by 10–17%. As they are low in calories, drinking these teas may be good for both weight loss and weight maintenance. It's thought their metabolism-boosting properties may help prevent the dreaded weight loss plateau that occurs due to a decrease in metabolism.

Make it spicy! Peppers contain capsaicin, a substance that can boost your metabolism.

However, many people can't tolerate these spices at the doses required to have a significant effect.

Capsaicin, at acceptable doses, predicted that eating peppers would burn around 10 additional calories per meal. Over 6.5 years, this could account for 1 pound of weight loss for an average-weight male. Alone, the effects of adding spices to your food may be quite small. However,

it may lead to a slight advantage when combined with other metabolism-boosting strategies.

Most commonly, lack of sleep is linked to a major increase in the risk of obesity. This may partly caused by the negative effects of sleep deprivation on metabolism . Lack of sleep has also been linked to increased blood sugar levels and insulin resistance, which are both linked to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It's also been shown to boost the hunger hormone, ghrelin and decrease the fullness hormone, leptin. This could explain why many people who are sleep-deprived feel hungry and struggle to lose weight.

Replace cooking oils and fats with coconut oils. Unlike other saturated fats, coconut oil is relatively high in medium-chain fats. Medium-chain fats can increase your metabolism more than the long-chain fats found in foods like butter. Due to the unique fatty acid profile of coconut oil, replacing some of your other cooking fats with it may have modest benefits for weight loss .

Summer Beach Reads

T

his is my fourth summer being a columnist for Shore Local and each summer I create a list of recommended beach reads.

This summer reading has taken on a different meaning for me. It’s become much more of an escape during uncertain times. One positive that has come out of the pandemic for me is that I’ve finally started borrowing books electronically from the library. This has been a total game changer, getting a new book every two weeks. I’m still supporting my local library without having to have contact with people. Here is a glimpse into what I’ve been enjoying over the past few months.

I have been a big fan of author Curtis Sittenfeld since first reading Prep and American Wife. Her new book, Rodham, tells the alternate life story of Hillary Rodham Clinton if she had not married Bill Clinton. This book was strange at times but deeply satisfying at the end. I couldn’t put it down.

While I’m not usually a fan of self-help books preaching about how to live my best life, I was pleasantly surprised by Glennon Doyle’s new book Untamed. In this book she tells the story of how her marriage crumbled

while she was busy promoting a book and how she unexpectedly found a surprising new love. Maybe it’s because of the strange times we are living in, but this book really spoke to me about how life is too short to be living a life that you don’t find satisfying, not just when it comes to love but about all aspects of your life.

A Woman is No Man came to me via Jenna Bush Hager’s recommendation. She started a book club on the Today Show and I’ve found her picks to be very closely aligned with my interests. A Woman is No Man tells the story of three generations of Pakistani-American women who struggle with the unfair expectations put on them by society when it comes to education and marriage. This book was heartbreaking at times but so well-written especially for a debut novel by Etaf Rum. In between the heavier books mentioned above, I’ve read some enjoyable lighter books. The Little Bookshop on the Seine

by Rebecca Raisin was a very fun read about an American bookshop owner who is given the opportunity to swap bookshops for six months with a Parisian bookshop owner. As someone who loves all things French, this was a very fun escape for me. The Happy Ever Playlist by Abby Jimenez was also a very fun love story about a woman who falls in love with a musician and must decide whether to be practical or to see if she can

make an unconventional relationship work.

In Five Years by Rebecca Serle was another quick read about fate and the choices that can change the course of our lives.

I’m currently reading The Vanishing Half

by Brit Bennett which I can’t put down. Next up on my list is The Girl with the Louding Voice by Abi Dare. You can find me on Good Reads (www.goodreads.com) where I rate all of the books I have read. I would love to hear what’s in your beach bag this summer.

Cooking up Goodness in Pleasantville

f you've had the opportunity to taste "Murphy's Chicken N Potatoes," you'll be back for more.

Andre Murphy of Pleasantville is cooking up goodness in the form of chicken and potatoes.

Healing For The Soul is a new movement Murphy is introducing in the South Jersey Area. The focus is to unify local communities through his soulful comforting dish "Murphy's Chicken N Potatoes".

It is also a weekly fundraiser for much needed repairs at Grace Tabernacle Church. Murphy's Chicken and Potatoes can be purchased every Friday 12-5pm at the Community Family Life Center located at 300 Shadeland Avenue inPleasantville.

"Andre is a unique person with much energy and vision. His chicken & potatoes dish is fantastic. It is good for the body and the soul," says Bishop Wondell Johnson of Grace Taberna-

cle Church. "And those who have tasted it, always come back!"

While Murphy will not disclose his recipe, he did tell us the secret ingredient is love - love for his family, friends,community & church. The recipe was passed down to him by his mother who

passed about five years ago.

"There are so many things dividing us now, more than ever," says Murphy. "It's wonderful to have something that brings people together and that's what Murphy's Chicken and Potatoes does."

There are tables set up outside the Community Life Center, adjacent to the church, so people can con-

nect while still keeping their social distance. However the weather has not cooperated. The first Friday it rained and last Friday was extremely hot. Still, we saw a steady stream of folks stopping by to pick up their Murphy's Chicken and Potatoes, and show their support.

Atlantic County PAL strives to empower and equip kids for the future

ector Tavarez recalls a pivotal moment in his earliest days as a police officer in Egg HarborTownship. He was driving along and gave a friendly wave to a kid standing on the sidewalk.

In return, the youngster gave him the finger. Tavarez backed up his car and asked "Why did you do that?" The child replied, "Because we hate you guys."

Tavarez knew, in that instant, he needed to make a change. That's when he, along with five fellow officers, began the Egg Harbor Township Police Athletic League (PAL), 31 years ago.

"Today it is more important than ever to create positive relationships with kids and police officers," says Tavarez. "I was one of those kids that could have gone either way. I came from a large family that struggled financially. But I had a lot of coaches and mentors that were police officers. Growing up in Mullica Township, it was those police officers that really had a positive impact on me."

Atlantic County Police Athletic League (PAL) is nearly ready to open their newest 14,400 square foot facility as part of Buddy's Adventure Zone Complex in Egg Harbor Township, situated on Ridge Avenue, just north of the Blackhorse Pike. The building is in the final stages of completion and it will be the newest STEM facility.

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, areas of learning that kids need to be comfortable with to excel in the future. STEM makes creators, thinkers, problem solv-

ers, doers, innovators, and inventors.

"We do not teach," explains Tavarez " rather, we facilitate discovery, point the kids in the right direction and let them discover."

PAL offers many STEM Summer Camps including: NASA Astronomy Camp, SeaPerch, Concepts Of Flights, Lego WeDo (Level 1.0 and 2.0), Mindstorms EV3, Servo City/Actobotics, and ROADS on Mars Challenge. Additionally, PAL offers year-round afterschool STEM workshops. The Atlantic County PAL robotics team has even been nationally recognized in the world championships in 2014.

Robotics competitions for 2020 have been cancelled though, due to the pandemic. PAL has adapted to the COVID-19 CDC guidelines and goes above and beyond to ensure the safety of their participants. Smaller group sizes, temperature screenings of each child and the person dropping them off, masks and mandated hand washing upon entry to the building are some of the procedures they have implemented.

The new building includes a community hall with a living room style set up, PAL main offices, classrooms, robotic team rooms, a basketball court, and workshops that teach carpentry skills.

A high ceiling is a key component in the community hall for drone flight and aviation. "The vision was the kids," says Tavarez. "We follow the kids lead with changes in programming, like moving away from paintball and into laser tag.

The motocross trails being added were based on young people seeking a safe and legal place to ride."

"We've come a long way from the first days of PAL when we worked out of the trunk of a police car in 1988." Tavarez points out that PAL is a nonprofit organization and none of it's building projects or operations are funded by taxpayers.

Rather they rely on fundraising and community grants. Ocean First Bank has been a major supporter of Atlantic County PAL. In addition to a Summer Camp Grant, PAL also received a grant from Ocean First, that enabled PAL to do 3D printing of face shields for essential workers. The grant was used to purchase supplies such as plastic, elastic, foam, filament and double-sided tape. All the face shields produced continue to be donated to Atlanticare, Shore Medical Center and those at risk in our community.

Hector Tavarez, the founder and executive director of Atlantic County PAL, has

championed the growth of the program since its inception. When asked, Tavarez is quick to shift all credit to the team.

"We have a great Board of Directors.

Many volunteers and staff have assisted to advance the STEM programming at PAL including Rayfield Leatherwood, a longtime STEM Mentor volunteer and Michelle Riordan, a STEM program coordinator. It's a team effort," emphasizes Tavarez.

What is next for Atlantic County PAL? "Phase 2 will be a 22,600-square-foot indoor sports arena," said Tavarez. "Other new programs include ROV remotely operated vehicles for land, air and water, work with drones, DJI Robomaster, Remote Control cars, and underwater robotics."

Summer Beach Jam Series Kicks Off Live Music in Ventnor

or many of us it felt as though summer was going to be cancelled. Restaurants did not know when they were going

to be allowed open. Most events were cancelled or postponed until further notice. It really started to seem like this was going to be a dud of a summer. But, with the numerous events that are starting to pop up, albeit with certain measures in place, this summer can still be one to remember.

One of the most anticipated summer events, which had to push back its original starting date by a month, is set to begin weekly from August 1. The Summer Beach Jam in Ventnor City will be taking place every Saturday on Newport Avenue beach (S Newport Ave, Ventnor City).

Starting at 4:30pm, there will be a mini farmer’s market where you can enjoy browsing a variety of craft items and delicious food before the live music begins at 5pm. Each week, a different line-up will be taking the beach-front stage to deliver an evening of unforgettable music and entertainment – free!

Starting at 5pm August 1 will be The Originaires, a three-piece band made up of vocalist CiBon, violinist, Valerie Vuolo, and guitarist, Ken Shiles.

They are best described as offering “heartfelt original songs performed with engaging chemistry and seamless musical precision”. This band is definitely the perfect way to kick off the summer season! Headlining for the evening is Gina Roche who over the past 30 years has made quite the name for herself in the tri-state area for her timbre, range, depth of meaning, and respect for accompanying instrumentalists. She sings various material including Jazz, Blues, Brazilian, and R&B to soulfully take you into the evening and enjoy the chill vibes.

On August 8, at 5pm, Jeffrey Folmer will take the stage as the warm-up act. Jefferey’s repertoire is diverse, performing a mix of original songs, classic covers from the likes of Fleetwood Mac Eric Clapton and The Beatles, and contemporary hits

by Adele, Ed Sheeran, and Mumford and Sons.

Headlining at 7:15pm is Poor Mouth Henry, a Southern New Jersey cover band providing a mixture of timeless and enduring covers of Classic Rock, Country Rock, Country, and Blues.

They describe themselves as “energetic, passionate, and fun-filled” making them a great headline act to get the crowds pumped up for summer.

August 15 has Ricky Stevens to warm up the crowds with some classic rock, Blues, old school country and occasionally pop. Think Johnny Cash, Chris Cornell, and Ray Charles. This

will kick in the nostalgia for anyone into their classic rock. Then at 7:15pm The Burnsiders will be taking to the stage. This is the night to come for reggae lovers as they perform a mix of roots, rocksteady, lovers rock, dancehall, and ska.

This will be one to throw on your dancing shoes for because they are sure to get the party started.

Crazy Uncle will have the stage at 5pm August 22 playing a mix of classic rock, pop, and original music. To give you an idea of their sound, they draw inspiration from the likes of Cream, The Rolling Stones, Sinatra, and The Beach Boys. I know, eclectic right? The headliner for this day is yet to be announced, but check out the Summer Beach Jam Facebook page to be kept up to date about who will take this spot.

Noted for their renditions of Irish folk and rebel tunes and for their original music, The Flynns will be the warm-up act at 5pm on August 29.

These guys cite The Pogues, The Dubliners, and The Dropkick Murphys as inspiration, and you know how much the Irish like to party. Following them at 7:15 will be Cocktail Party.

The show on September 4 will

start a little earlier with an act yet to be announced taking the stage at 4pm. Then at 6pm The Notion, a local rock cover band, will be playing tunes from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and today.

This date will also run a little later with the headline act, Dead Reckoning, performing at 8pm. These guys are the only Dylan & The Dead tribute band.

There was a live album by Bob Dylan and The Grateful Dead called Dylan & the Dead which is a collaborative live album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, released on February 6, 1989. Dead Reckoning is the only tribute act for it in the world, and of course, they also perform hits by The Grateful Dead.

Finally, as summer draws to a close, the last of the Summer Beach Jam series is taking place on September 5 and will be going out with a bang as an all-day event. Starting at 12pm is Jersey Cow Girls, the perfect day time listening as they bring their country/pop sounds. Then at 2pm, Zoetrope are set to perform. Kilted Rogues are up next at 4pm with their performance of up-tempo Scottish, Irish and popular tunes with Bagpipes & Drums. The

penultimate band of the night and the Summer Beach jam is the aptly named, One For The Road, at 6pm who will be jamming to country/rock music and bringing an up-beat, fun atmosphere as the night almost draws to a close.

The final band at 8pm is Friends Band who be playing music from the classics of the 50’s right up through today’s hits, they add their “own special touch to bring new life to the music loved by generations.” The perfect way to end a great summer of free music.

The farmer’s market will supply you with all the delicious food and drink you need to enjoy the music, all you need is your beach chairs and towels to enjoy this great free concert series. Have a Cigar at AC Cigar Company A quick study of stogies

feel I need to issue a quick statement before I begin my Q and A.... before talking with Gage Herse, who’s cigar manager, buyer, and inventory specialist at The Atlantic City Cigar Company....I knew absolutely nothing about cigars. After our talk I can honestly say I’m looking forward to learning so much more about a world that intimidated me mere days ago.

EH: When did you begin your love of Cigars?

GH: I guess it was around High School. I was part of the chess club, we would go to the park and may have snuck in some cigars and had a little cigar and chess time out in the open air, it was nice.

EH: What do you look for in a cigar for yourself?

GH: My favorite cigars generally come from Nicaragua. Anything with a really toothy wrapper, really rich hearty full bodied tobacco, the stronger the better. Something that I can just kick my feet back, have a nice glass of scotch or a nice beer and just forget about everything.

EH: A toothy Wrapper? Please explain.

GH: A toothy Wrapper.... a thicker, more broadleaf wrapper that has little bumps on it. It’s the way the leaf has grown, matured and aged. It’s a

different experience compared to your traditional Connecticuts which can be very smooth.

Habanos generally can get in that area but there’s something about a really nice aged Padron. They have this coarse leaf that has such a good mouth feel.

EH: Give me a crash course in Cigar 101, what should I be looking for? Cigars have always intimidated me.

GH: The first cigar I ever smoked that wasn’t flavored was an Ashton label. The traditional very light very smooth puff of air with a little bit of pepper. If your thing isn’t tobacco and you want to try something but you're a little weary, you can always try something sweet. Sugar tip cigars have been huge. Blondies too, they’re real short, real sweet, and real cheap, very easy.

EH: What do you have here for a first timer like myself?

GH: The Ashtons and the blondies generally, are going to be very light.

You can also go into a flavored cigar or the smaller ones like Tatiana, who makes a very thin cigar that generally smokes a lot lighter than their

labeled as. Other than that, we have Montecristo classics, I have an endless amount.

EH: Being that you’re inside A Taste of Wine, do you do any pairings?

GH: Anything they have there, I’ve got a cigar pairing to satisfy everybody.

If you’re going to pair it with bourbon I have something rich and smooth, cognac same concept maybe a little lighter. If you're going to go with something scotch, something heavy and hearty, I’ll pair that with a little cedar spice to combat the bold flavors. I’ve got something for every pallet.

EH: I’ve always heard about Cuban cigars and Dominican cigars. Explain it like I am five please.

GH: With Cuban Tobacco, there’s more of a lure to it because of the taboo. Although they do make some incredible Cuban cigars, a lot of the top five, top three in the past decade have been Cubans. Generally speaking the tobacco itself, Dominicans say, “Oh they’re too mild” and Nicaraguans say ”Oh they’re a little more full” but it's really just based on what the big brand name guys are making and at the end

Rediscovering Steel Pier

t’s not every day you can look at a place you’ve seen a million times in a totally new way. A few days ago, I stepped onto The Wheel at Steel Pier and had the opportunity to experience this feeling. It was eye opening.

smell of funnel cake. I worked across the Boardwalk from the Steel Pier for years and during the summers I would walk on the Boardwalk during my lunch break. I always knew that the moment I walked out the door and onto the Boardwalk the smell of funnel cake would slap me in the face. I have a love hate relationship with funnel cake. But I cannot deny its irresistible aroma.

However, that comes from the mind that also thought coming home from the Boardwalk with sand art, or my name written on a grain of rice or a hermit crab was super cool. However, I still feel that way about the lights on the rides, and with an impressive 14,000 lights on the Wheel, it’s still pretty great.

s your air conditioner getting a workout these days? I know mine is as I really feel for those who have no choice but to work an outside job in this heat. Hope you are all staying safe & healthy during challenging times.

Since I last wrote, the Phillies have played three “summer camp” exhibition games and the start of the 60-game season is right around the corner. The Flyers continue to prepare in Voorhees for their trip to Toronto and “inside the bubble” the NHL has set up. The Flyers also are mourning the loss of one of their own, while celebrating a current player’s inclusion as a finalist for one of the league’s big individual awards. The Sixers are in Orlando, inside their bubble, as their games begin this week. Meanwhile, Eagles rookies are scheduled to report to training camp this week, but there are still more questions than answers there. In golf, I thoroughly enjoyed “The Memorial” from Dublin, Ohio. I also am applauding the Philadelphia Union for advancing to the Round of 16 in the MLS restart. Finally, on the local level, I

was in-person for a game of “The Last Dance” and for one night in Ocean City, I almost forgot about COVID-19 for a while.

From the entertainment world, I’ve decided to start going through a broadcast TV classic that’s 17 seasons in and still going strong. Plus, I made sure to DVR the movie version of something my Dad truly loves. Here’s a hint…anyone ever heard of Lake Wobegon? As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● The Phillies played three exhibition games, but I only got to watch the final two as they beat Washington 7-2 at Nationals Park (only saw highlights), and then lost to Baltimore 4-1 at home, followed by a 2-2 tie at the Yankees. Was it like watching a normal game? Absolutely not. Was it better than watching old games?

Absolutely! ● One thing that was interesting was the use of fake crowd noise when a good play or bad play happened. You definitely hear a lot more from the field, including the pop of the mitt on each pitch. Hey, I’m so hungry for actual competition, I’m willing to overlook some of the things that AREN’T there just to appreciate what is, and that’s actual competitive baseball.

The Phillies lost a dear member of their alumni since last column when they announced that Tony Taylor passed away at age 84. “TT” as he was affectionately known, was definitely before my time, and I knew him more as the smiling legend who would come back for alumni weekend than for his on the field exploits. But without Taylor, Jim Bunning would not have pitched a perfect game on Father’s Day in 1964. Taylor cried when he was traded from Philadelphia, and when he came back late in his career, he got a standing ovation from the Phillies fans. His love affair with the Phillies never ended. R.I.P. Tony Taylor…one of the great ones to wear a Phillies uniform.

My last Phillies item is that manager Joe Girardi has announced that Aaron Nola will start on Opening Day. Opening Day is this Friday, July 24th. I can’t wait and I hope they’re able to get

through a 60-game season safely & healthy. PLAY BALL! In the NHL, the Flyers might end up with their first Selke award winner since Dave Poulin took the hardware home in in 1987. The 27-year-old center has been named as one of the three finalists, along with Boston’s Patrice Bergeron and Ryan O’Reilly from St. Louis. Couturier finished the regular season with 59 points in 69 games and a plus-21 rating, and he led the NHL by winning 59.6% of his face-offs. He’s been a finalist before, but Bergeron has beat him out in the past. Let’s hope this is the year that “Coots” gets the accolades that he deserves.

The Flyers are mourning the loss former player, scout & assistant coach Jack McIlhargey after a battle with cancer. He was 68 and was still scouting for the Flyers. In a statement, the Flyers said Mr. McIlhargey was “a large part of drafting the players on today’s team and the ones currently in our system who will make up a new generation of Flyers.” Known as “Bucky”, one hockey media member described McIlhargey as a “true violent gentleman”. What a great tribute.

Tuesday July 28th when they skate in an exhibition game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Remember, the Flyers begin pool play on Sunday August 2nd against the Bruins. Drop the puck!

Moving on to basketball where the Sixers have been practicing in Orlando “inside the bubble” since July 11th.

According to guard Josh Richardson, the practices have even gotten a “little chippy”. Hey, I think that’s a GOOD sign that the Sixers are taking things seriously and it shows that they care about this restart.

Currently a six-seed, the Sixers have been a lot of people’s pick to go far in this restart in Orlando. Why? Well, their lack of chemistry before the break led them to a 39-26 record, but they were also banged up. Ben Simmons is healthy.

Joel Embiid is healthy. Al Horford at age 34, admitted he was less than 100% by the time the season was suspended and he is now feeling fine.

The biggest reason for the optimism though? Shake Milton at point guard.

That allows the Sixers to move Simmons down to the low block at the four and puts him in a position to really explode. This would move Horford to the bench, and it’s not clear how the veteran feels about that. However, I think when you add it all up, the Sixers have a very realistic chance of making some noise in Orlando. Again, let’s see if they stay healthy & safe down there.

Remember, the Sixers first scrimmage is this week on July 24th against the Memphis Grizzlies. Their first actual game is August 1st against the Indiana Pacers. 10-9-8-76ers.

That means the entire 2020 draft class is signed, but will they actually show up at training camp this week?

The rookies are scheduled to report on Tuesday, the veterans are supposed to report next week.

Eagles QB Carson Wentz and some other prominent NFL players caused a bit of a stir when they all coordinated a tweet over the weekend calling on the league to conduct daily testing to start training camp at least. From the latest reports, the NFL will consent to daily COVID-19 testing and also the NFL has reportedly agreed to cancel ALL the preseason games.

According to a statement from the NFLPA, “the fact that spring OTAs were wiped out by the pandemic and players haven’t been on the field together since last season, the union felt playing preseason games would be counterproductive, both from an injury and learning standpoint.” Hard to disagree with that.

As I write this, New Jersey governor Phil Murphy made an announcement that the state of NJ would not allow gatherings inside Met-Life stadium, so no crowds for Jets or Giants games in East Rutherford. This information is very new, and I’m still waiting to see how that will impact the rest of the league. The pessimists out there say, “no way will the NFL have a season”, but I’m crossing my fingers that we get one, even if it might be without fans in the stands.

Kudos to the Philadelphia Union for finishing pool play at the MLS restart unbeaten. They tied Orlando 1-1 and now advance to the Round of 16 where it’s a “lose and go home” situation. I’m just impressed they played

My last sports item is about “The Last Dance” in local baseball. My girlfriend’s son Michael & I went over to the Ocean City baseball field at 5th & Bay Avenue to watch A.C.I.T. take on the BPC Spartans (Holy Spirit).

What a treat it was to sit in my beach chair and watch high school baseball being played. Now, some things were different, as the home plate umpire actually called balls & strikes from behind the mound, instead of behind the catcher & batter. Social distancing! What wasn’t different is that it was a great baseball game that the Spartans won 2-1. There was a home run in the game and just some good solid baseball by both teams. Tip of the cap to Spartans head coach Steve Normane as his BPC Spartans won the regional and now advance to South Jersey bracket play.

As usual, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I’ve decided to go back and begin watching a popular CBS show. For whatever reason, I’ve never watched an episode of “N.C.I.S.” until now. Thanks to Netflix, I have now have 17 seasons and 398 episodes to watch on Netflix when I have time. Without commercials, I find these to be like “comfort food” as they are an easy watch and I’m only in season one. Will I make it all the way to season 17? Probably not, but there’s much worse things I could be watching instead of this classic Donald P. Bellisario procedural right?

Finally, I mentioned Lake Wobegon at the top of the column. Did any of you correctly associate that with “A Prairie Home Companion?" My father loved listening to Garrison Keillor and his old-time radio show for years

when it was on NPR, and I even got to accompany him to a couple of the live shows. One was in Philadelphia and one was in New York City, and I loved to see how everything came together to make a seamless blend of radio magic. Well, that show is long gone, but I just came across the Robert Altman directed movie of the same name from 2006. With an amazing ensemble cast of actors like Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, Lily Tomlin, Garrison Keillor, Virginia Madsen, John C. Reilly, and Lindsay Lohan… along with Keillor and some of his regulars, the movie version did not disappoint. Perhaps, I’m nostalgic for old time shows like this, but I just love Guy Noir and the show being brought to you by Powdermilk Biscuits.

Lucy The Elephant & I Our longstanding and strained relationship

uly 20th is the annual celebration of Lucy The Elephant, now America’s older roadside tourist attraction. Lucy stands at 65 feet (19.7 m) in height, 60 feet (18.3 m) in length, and 18 feet (5.5 m) in width and weighs about 90 tons. It is listed as the 12th tallest statue in the United States. The structure was designed by James Lafferty in 1881.

All those facts you can get from the internet. Now I’m going to discuss my relationship with Lucy The Elephant.

I have always been tall. When I was 11, I was tall for my age and when I was 18, I was just tall. I forget how off putting tall people can be until I think of Lucy The Elephant. It’s been nearly 50 years since I first saw Lucy and well...

For some reason my dad decided it would be cool to take me, his 4 year old son to see 65 foot Lucy. Why my father felt I would want to see an 85 foot high elephant, I’ll never know, because at 4 years old, I could not handle Mr. Peanut on the boardwalk without fear and tears…(no really, I would cry.) So when I first saw this 100 foot elephant in Margate, I was wishing I was somewhere comfortable like a dentist chair for a nice friendly root canal.

Lucy spooks me to this day.

In 2020 when I have to go past 9200 Atlantic Avenue in Margate? It may as well be 1313 Mockingbird Lane because LUCY STILL SPOOKS ME. When I know I am on Atlantic Avenue in Margate ..I look for Lucy because no one needs for me to be surprised by Lucy, just coming up. When I was a kid I would ask my mother not to take that route. When I first start-

ed driving (and sometimes now) I avoided that area altogether.

Through the years. I have played basketball down the street from Lucy and I have even attended a party inside of her.

Almost every time I have been near her, I swear I have seen her

move. So in closing. I love Lucy The Elephant and wish you a happy birthday (from my home in Atlantic City) may you enjoy another 100 plus happy years...in Margate...don’t ever change and don’t ever move.

New Restaurant serves up Bubble Tea Trendy drink now available in Galloway

Have you heard of bubble tea?

A trendy and unique-looking treat, bubble tea is a popular Taiwanese beverage. It is made by blending a tea base with milk, fruit and fruit juices, then adding the signature “bubbles” - tapioca pearls that sit at the bottom.

These delicious tea infusions can be made either hot or cold, making a delicious drink. It’s called bubble tea both because of the tapioca balls (also known as “pearls” or “boba”), and the floating “bubbles” created by the vigorous shaking involved in its blending. People are obsessed with this drink that features a base made from tea, fruit, coffee or milk and chewy "pearls" at the bottom of the cup. It comes in as many flavors as there are teas and fruits, so you can pick and choose. Served in a transparent cup to show off its bubbly qualities, bubble tea can be made in a wide range of ways. As well as using varieties of fruit infusions and

teas, fresh fruits, crushed ice and milk are often features - a very fancy milkshake indeed! After popping all the ingredients together, it needs a thorough shake to blend it all together.

Bubble tea can be found nationwide, from food courts to the drink menus of high-end restaurants.

However, its origins are in Taiwan.

If you have traveled to Taiwan or Hong Kong, you can’t help but notice bubble tea shops on every corner.

Taiwanese tea stands became very popular in the 1980s. After seeing the success of this drink, concessions all over Taiwan started adding tapioca pearls and different fruit flavours to their iced teas, and so began bubble tea as we now know it! From Taiwan, its popularity has spread throughout China, Australia, the United Kingdom,

and now right here in the United States.

Check out the newest place to get this refreshing and wildly popular beverage. Mito Asia, located at 254 E. Jimmie Leeds Road in Galloway, will be serving up bubble tea in a wide variety of flavors. Owners, Ellen Cheng and Yunsu Lin, both originally from Taiwan and now residents of Egg Harbor Township, are bringing

this craze to Atlantic County.

Mito Asia also serves lattes, iced coffee, and other beverages in addition to the bubble teas they offer.

I recommend the hazelnut milk tea, which had the perfect amount of sweetness for me. Mito Asia also has food on the menu, including spring rolls and fried calamari. Desserts like mochi ice cream also are served there, which could be a refreshing summer treat. Whether you’re a bubble tea aficionado or just looking for a quick bite to eat, Mito Asia has something for everyone.

Dealing with a Garden Full of Trouble

A

lthough gardeners envision prize-winning roses, dazzling dahlias, and zillions of zucchini, alas, reality brings aphids, powdery mildew, and black spot. What is one to do? Well, take heart because many of these gardening woes can be easily solved.

After the dog days of summer have brought humidity in buckets, you may have noticed white spots on the leaves of your plants. Called powdery mildew, this fungus often affects plants such as phlox, zucchini, cucumbers, and bee balm (monarda). Poor air circulation and lack of adequate sunlight are some of the top reasons for this fungal disease. Certain species of plants are susceptible to this disease and should not be planted in damp, shaded areas. If powdery mildew becomes a problem, moving the plants to a sunnier location or simply trimming overhead branches may solve the issue.

Also, early morning watering of your plants is better than evening. Overcrowding of plants can lead to powdery mildew, but an over abundance of leaves on each plant can also cause poor air circulation.

In addition to removing the infected leaves, thin out the leaves of plants such as cucumbers and zucchini. This may provide a cure for another problem--blossom end rot. Though this could be due to insufficient calcium, when the female flowers of plants such as zucchini are not properly pollinated, the new fruit could begin growing, only to quickly shrivel and die. Removing some of the excessive leaves will not only provide better air circulation, but will also allow pollinators to find their way to the male and female flowers. Some home remedies for treating powdery mildew include using diluted hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, or even mouthwash. Many gardeners swear by neem oil as a panacea that works both as a fungicide and pesticide. Neem oil is extracted from the seeds of the Neem tree, native to India. When used properly, it can be a non-toxic, organic way to treat many garden troubles.

Plants with many flowers but low production of vegetables may be due to insufficient pollination. Encourage pollinators by interplanting flowers such as coneflower, borage, and anise hyssop

(agastache foeniculum) among your edibles. Growing at least two to three of the same types of vegetable plants near each other will also encourage pollination. In desperate times, you may need to hand-pollinate by using a small paintbrush or cotton swab to transfer pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers. Some plants, such as tomatoes and okra, have “perfect flowers” that contain both the male and female parts in each blossom. Sometimes giving these plants a little shake is all that’s needed to cause the pollen to drop into place.

Every spring, I see those annoying little aphids on my rose buds. Later in the season I often find whiteflies on some of my plants. While blasting them with the hose is very gratifying, following up with insecticidal soap will save your flowers. Normally, I just make my own by adding a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle of water. Squirting the aphids or whiteflies with this mixture should solve the problem. This year many of my plants were attacked by pests that left holes in the leaves of my kale, broccoli, lettuce, and Swiss chard. Whipping out my spray bottle again is a safe way to treat vegetables, but my new friend, diatomaceous earth, is also a non-toxic way to combat pests. The microscopic glass-like shards of diatomaceous earth (DE) will deter pests and dry out their exoskeletons. This is another time to bring out the Neem oil.

Fortunately, most of my cold-season vegetables had already produced, and I was ready to pull them out to make way for new plantings. Before my new seedlings emerge, I plan on treating the soil with DE and epsom salts to reclaim my little plot.

In Treasure Island or Pirates of the Carribean, Black Spot can mean your doom, but it doesn’t have to be the case for your roses. Though the very sight of it fills me with dread, a prompt treatment can save your plants. As with most issues, prevention is your first line of defense. Many of the preventative

and treatment measures for black spot are similar to those for powdery mildew.

Choose disease-resistant plants, keep your roses in full sun, prune to improve air circulation, and water in the early morning (not evening). When watering roses, try to water near the base and do not get the leaves wet. Using mulch around your roses will keep soil infected by spores of the fungus from splashing on the leaves, as well as keep weeds at bay. Once you see black spot on the leaves, immediately remove infected parts of the plant, being sure to dispose of your cuttings. Do not let the leaves drop to the ground, because they can spread the infection. Also, clean your scissors or pruning shears to avoid spreading the disease to other plants. Untreated, leaves will turn yellow and fall off, and soon the entire plant will be affected. A fungicide (found at most garden nurseries) will be an effective way to prevent and treat black spot. Home remedies include a mixture of baking soda, water, and dish soap or treating with Neem oil.

While most gardeners deal with their share of issues, summertime is usually the time to sit back and enjoy the fruit of your labor. Prevention is key and a few proactive measures early in the season can save you a lot of headaches later.

Then you can focus on real problems, like what you are going to do with all of that zucchini!

Dear Shore Local Mom

his is your invitation to take a deep breath. I know it’s a lot! We are dealing with so much right now as humans and as parents. We are living through unprecedented and challenging times.

There isn’t a parenting book entitled, “What to Expect When You’re NOT Expecting 2020.” We were never groomed for this and we are figuring it out together day by day. Processing all of the thoughts, fears, and emotions for ourselves and then having to turn around and help our children process is the job of a Superhero. The good news is, you’re already wearing your Supermom cape.

As moms, we are infamous for putting the needs of others first and leaving ourselves with the scraps. We have a reputation for putting ourselves last under normal circumstances, even though we all know that we need self-preservation. Most of us try to make time for self care but we are givers, providers, and lovers, which

means our kids and spouses tend to get the best of us.

In 2020, it’s more important than ever for us to nurture our mental health. Taking care of your mental health doesn’t need to look like face masks, long baths, and wine. Though, of course that sounds incredible. Self-care can be found in the little moments and everyday activities. In this week’s Moms’ Vibe column, I want to share with you little pieces of joy, gratitude, and peace that I have found in the midst of the chaos.

There is nothing like Summertime iced coffee. When I am working, traveling, and living my normal life, I always have an iced coffee in my hand. world. I try to also include the kids on occasion. The key word there is “try.” There are meditations for the family on Headspace, as well as anywhere on the internet. Settling in a safe, calm space together sets the tone for the rest of the day or even the next hour.

Recently, I started deleting social media apps off of my phone for several days at a time. I get caught up in the scroll, the opinions, and the hate that can consume social media feeds. I found myself angry more often than not, which is not the way I want to live my life. I kept my Facebook account but deleted the app off of my phone and experienced the sigh of relief my mind needed.

Give it a shot! Everything on social media will still be there when you get back. I know many moms use their social media for business but keep in mind that if the social media feed is disrupting your peace in the way I felt like it was disrupting mine, that break from it will make you a better business woman, a better mom, and an all around better you.

to get lost in. Better yet, turn the screens off altogether and pick up a good book. I recently read Untamed by Glennon Doyle, which was a beautiful ode to wild women everywhere. I also got lost in the beautiful story found in Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. There is something so relaxing about getting lost in a good book. My next reading adventures are all the works of the great Maya Angelou.

Kindness and the support of others nurtures the soul as well. My good friend Jill started sending little kindness notes in the mail to all of her friends. We all get to open a smile in the mail and I know Jill gets so much joy out of sending them. In the spirit of giving, I bought some farm fresh eggs for my sister-in-law and she returned the joy giving with ears of Jersey corn. These little gestures spark joy and gratitude that remind us we are all human beings, in this life together, trying to figure it all out.

We are built to be connected as humans. I know we are living in a time when being physically together isn’t encouraged but that doesn’t mean we neglect togetherness altogether.

Socially distant playdates for the kids have helped them get their energy out while also offering me some social interaction. If you’re not ready for that yet, I totally understand. Don’t forget to take advantage of those Zoom happy hours or the opportunity to just pick up the phone and call a friend.

We are not meant to do life alone.

Write, paint, create. This is especially relevant for our children who are also going through stressful and uncertain times. My house is quite the makeshift art studio right now, as my kids have taken over with expressing themselves through art. I read in the beginning of quarantine that this is already a traumatic situation for our

children to be pulled out of school and kept at home, that it’s up to us to not make it more traumatic. With that sentiment in mind, I have eased up my expectations when it comes to mess. My kids love to experiment in the kitchen, paint whatever is on their mind, and build forts that make them feel safe. I’m no perfect mom so trust me, I get overwhelmed with the chaos sometimes but overall, I’ve tried to let them express their emotions through various avenues of creativity.

The mess won’t last forever. Covid-19 won’t last forever either. We will never get this time back. Eventually, we will all be back to being busy and running from activity to activity. So, for now, I am doing my best to lean into what is right here for me.

Of course, there are a million ways to make sure we continue to take care of our mental health. I just want to encourage you to keep your well being at the top of your mind. If you are struggling with your mental health, seek help. There is never any shame in asking for help. I strongly encourage online counseling. Before all of this even began, I was using BetterHealth.com for my own mental well-being. Check out your insurance’s telehealth options for virtual counseling as well. Most of all, never be afraid to ask for some support. We all need it!

Momma, you are doing great!

Don’t let anybody tell you any different. You are loved, gifted, and strong beyond words. Keep on keeping on.

Restarting after a break in exercise

ost of us fall off our exercise routine at one point or another. Whether busy, injured, stressed, on vacation or suffering from burnout, even the most dedicated fitness junkie has to take the occasional break from physical activity. The trouble is, most of us struggle to gain traction once we’re ready to return to our exercise routine.

It feels like you’re starting from scratch.

It takes so long to build it and so quick to lose it. It can be downright frustrating and some throw in the towel without giving it a proper chance. When we fall out of the consistent habit of exercise it can make even the idea of it feel completely daunting and downright stressful.

Here are some steps to make your transition back into fitness more manageable. Get clear about what you want to accomplish with your exercise routine. Setting a goal is great and you’ll increase your odds of attaining it if, you're specific. It’s not enough to say you want to “get fit;” you need to be very precise.

Once you identify your specific goal, make sure you’re able to measure your progress. For example, if your goal is to run a half-marathon, gauge progress by

hitting certain benchmarks throughout your training regimen. I like audible training programs for this very reason.

You start off with small attainable goals such as a 20 minute run or 2 miles and that leads to success. Tiny successes lead to big ones.

Are you trying to lose weight? Track your progress by weighing yourself periodically and/or having body composition measurements taken. Whatever your goal is, you should feel 90–100% confident you can attain it. If you’re not confident, consider breaking your goal into a smaller goal. For example, instead of aiming to lose 20 pounds in a month, try for eight. Make sure your goal is consistent with your interests, needs and abilities.

If strength is your goal, I would highly recommend starting slow to let your body rest and heal in between workouts. Try starting with three fullbody strength workouts per week, taking at least one day to recover in between. Evaluate your progress every two weeks by increasing sets, reps or weight or decreasing your rest between sets. You will see how far you’ve come and don’t forget to keep a journal or notebook.

This progression principle also applies to cardio workouts. If your treadmill or elliptical session begins to feel easy, bump up the intensity by increasing speed or resistance. Kicking up the incline is a great way to add intensity.

Do not worry about what the person next to you is doing. Worry about yourself and there’s no room for comparison. Who cares if your workout buddy can bang out more pushups than you.

Their fitness journey is different than yours. When we exercise, we are asking our biology to adapt, and that takes time. Don’t let other people make you feel insecure. Instead, focus on your own goals and abilities. Continue taking consistent steps toward your goals and simply enjoy the journey. It’s just a confidence booster.

Muscle soreness is normal and even expected when restarting a fitness routine. But while you may be tempted to use post-workout soreness as an excuse to catch up on Netflix, you’ll be more ready to tackle your next workout if you do a little exercise on your day off. Doing basic movements will speed up your recovery. I’m not talking about anything intense. Staying active on your recovery days helps maintain consistency with your new exercise habit.

Take your dog to the park or beach or stroll around your neighborhood. Try not to be sedentary.

If you jump back into your strength-training routine, resist the urge to lift to your full potential. Instead, stop a few reps short at least, in the beginning. If you typically lift a twenty pound weight for 12 reps, stop at 9 or 10, and see how you feel the next day. If you’re recovering well and feeling ready for more, bump it up to your usual rep range for your next workout. You’ll inevitably have days when your planned workout is either unmanageable or unappealing.

Things just come up that you can’t help or control. That’s life! On these days, you may be tempted to sit on the couch, but it’s always better to do something especially when you’re trying to rebuild an exercise habit. If you have to forego your hour workout for ten minutes, at least it’s something and as long as you do something, you’re moving in the right direction.

In a notebook or on your phone under notes,

keep a list of possible alternative workouts so you’ll never be unprepared.

You could perform a watered-down version of your planned workout or do something entirely different.

Often, we need to be held accountable to someone. This is a biggie for many people. It makes them feel great to report what they’ve eaten or what type of workout they’ve completed when we are not together. It increases the odds of success by enlisting help.

No one has ever said that fitness had to be a solo journey. I love having an accountability partner. Mine is my daughter.

Hire a trainer (distance or in-person), join an online fitness challenge or set a weekly run date with a friend.

For some people just logging your food and exercise into "My Fitness Pal" is enough. This is a free application that my daughter and I use daily.

Many people have slacked on exercise because of the pandemic. I know plenty of people that are missing their indoor cycle classes or their water aerobics classes and it’s been rough especially when they may only be able to do those types of exercises due to injuries. Don’t be too hard on yourself and find something in the meantime.

Maybe an outdoor pool is an option and create your own water exercise class or consider purchasing a stand to place your bike on so that it becomes stationary. This time in our lives has proven to be stressful, so exercising is even more crucial to maintaining good mental and physical health!
