Swim safely this summer Letter from the editor

W

ater and summer go together. Here, at the Jersey Shore, we relish in the world's second largest body of water, the Atlantic Ocean. With it's 41 million square miles, it covers 20 percent of the Earth's surface. Astounding, right? What's even more astonishing is the power and force of it: the waves, currents, tides and treacherous rip currents. The ocean commands our respect and its power is not to be underestimated.

Last week, we were saddened to hear the news of several drownings along our coast.

In Ventnor, Jalan Alstin, died a hero, while saving two of his friends from drowning. Alstin, a recent highschool graduate from New York, jumped into the water, after he saw two of his friends being swept away

in a rip current. Gustave Vincolato, 77, of Folcroft, was pronounced dead at AtlantiCare Medical Center after being found unconscious in shallow water at a beach in Atlantic City.

Jabed Ikbal, 24 of Clementon NJ, went missing Sunday after swimming in rough waters near the Ocean City-Longport bridge.

Our hearts go out to their families, friends and loved ones impacted by these tragic events.

Swimming in the ocean takes a different set of skills than swimming in a pool or lake. The most important thing when swimming in the ocean, is to swim only at a lifeguard-protected beach.

Lifeguards are experts at identifying dangerous rip currents and they can point out where not to swim. On a weekend or vacation many of us like to enjoy a drink from time to time. Only swim when you are sober. Also, always gauge your

Rip currents are responsible for most drownings at the Jersey

Shore and for most of the rescues performed by lifeguards. They can form in any large open water area, such as low spots and breaks in sandbars, or near structures such as jetties and piers. A windy day could indicate a surge in rip currents. Stay at least 100 feet away from piers and jetties. Permanent rip currents often exist near these structures.

If you are caught in a rip current, stay calm and don’t fight the current.

Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of the current. Once you are free, turn and swim toward the shore.

The bay, saltwater creeks and lakes on the mainland also offer fun ways to cool off in the summer. With COVID-19 restricting events this year, water activities more popular than ever. Just do it safe.

This three daylong celebration of the magnificent seaside icon will end on Monday July 20th with a street name dedication commemorating the 50th anniversary of Lucy’s historic move to Decatur Avenue, where Lucy has lived for 50 years. After Monday it will be forever known as “Lucy Plaza.”

EH: How did the name change come about?

RH: This was my idea to commemorate that eventful day in Lucy’s history and to honor the 50 years of dedicated service of the volunteers who have worked to make Lucy the world renown attraction she is today.

EH: Besides seeing Lucy, what other activities are planned?

RH: This year we’re doing a recreation of the iconic Lenny’s hot dog stand just a block away from where the eatery stood 50 years ago. They’ll be selling hot dogs with their famous pepper hash, corn on the cob and sodas. There will also be a 9 hole mini-golf course and a giant inflatable corn hole toss. On Monday during the ceremony, Dan Walsh and Patti Blee will be on hand to sing their new song, “Lucy the Elephant”.

EH: How will social distancing be handled?

RH: We will have two greeters on duty to welcome our guests, give out masks to those who may show up without one, and try to enforce social distancing. The event is outside; hopefully everyone will respect the guidelines.

EH: We know WE have to, but will Lucy be wearing a mask?

RH: LOL, No elephants are immune to the virus!

EH: How many workers/Volunteers does it take to put on this 3-day elephantastic celebration?

RH: We will have our full staff of 13 and approximately 15 volunteers as well.

EH: What goes into recreating Lenny’s iconic hot dog stand?

RH: First, we had to obtain permission from the owner of Lenny’s Hot Dogs in Feasterville, PA (the only remaining and still operating Lenny’s).

We are buying the famous Lenny’s

Pepper Hash from him. Next we had to secure a trailer equipped to cook and sell the hot dogs from. And lastly, we had to create signage reminiscent of the Original Lenny’s. We have already been getting calls about it. People who remember Lenny’s in Margate are very excited we are bringing it back for the weekend.

EH: We hear there will be a “drive by lane” for people who want to participate. What are the hours, and how will it work?

RH: The event (and drive by lane) will be open on Saturday, 7/18 from

10am to 8pm and Sunday, 7/19 from 10am to 5pm. We will have an elephant costumed greeter on hand to welcome everyone as well as MACKIE, everyone’s favorite Stilt Walker.

EH: Did Lucy get a pedicure? If so, what color?

RH: Yes, of course. This year, Lucy’s fans on Facebook selected gold glitter.

And naturally, she has white French tips too.

EH: What are other ways people can donate?

RH: In addition to dropping off birthday gifts (cash or check) in the drive by lane, people can donate on Lucy’s website, www.LucyTheElephant. org, or by mailing a check to: Lucy the Elephant, 9200 Atlantic Ave., Margate, NJ 08402. As a 501(c)3 non-profit charity, all donations made to Lucy are tax deductible.

The event will be held Saturday July 18th 10am-8pm; Sunday July 19th 10am- 5pm and Monday, July 20th at 10:30 for the street renaming.

Living Fossils Roam the Beach

crabs will eat just about anything.

Their diet primarily consists of small clams, worms, crustaceans and small algae. They do not have teeth or a jawbone so they crash hard food between their legs before passing it to their mouth.

It is not uncommon to find horseshoe crabs washed ashore. Even though you may find them stranded on the beach, most are still very much alive. Rough weather conditions can cause horseshoes to be flipped over with its legs facing up, finding it difficult to upright itself. At times, they can use its long, fragile

outh Jersey is home to one of the largest populations of horseshoe crabs on the planet. Did you know that horseshoe crabs have existed long before dinosaurs roamed the earth? In 2017, scientists uncovered the remains of a fossil that dated back nearly 450 million years. It was given the name ‘Darth Vader’ because of its unusual shape of a large, curved shell that keeps them protected from predators. Horseshoe crabs are often referred to as ‘living fossils’ because their appearance has remained seemingly unchanged since prehistoric times.

They are also the largest known arthropods in the world, and are closely related to extinct sea scorpions and spiders.

Between late May and early June, horseshoe crabs will come ashore to look for a mate. At times, you may see hundreds, if not thousands of them on the beach at one time.

An interesting fact is a horseshoe crab's blood is blue. Horseshoe crabs use a protein called hymocyanin to carry oxygen through its blood.

It contains a high amount of copper, which gives its blood a bright blue color.

Over the last 15 years, horseshoe crab population along the Delaware Bay has declined by population by over 90% due to changes to habitat and overharvesting. In an effort to preserve the species, the Wetlands Instutute in Stone Harbor has launched statewide stewardship and conservation program. With proper permits, the Institute collects fertilized eggs and rears them under controlled conditions in their aquarium. After a month, eggs are hatched and newborns are maintained in an enclosed environment.

Pies, Cobblers and Crisps

always have good intentions at this point in the summer to make delicious fruit desserts.

The problem is that fruit does not last very long in my house. Between snacking and adding fresh fruit to my morning oatmeal, it’s usually gone before I can make a special dessert. When I do find myself with an abundance of local summer fruit, I make either a pie, crisp or cobbler depending on how much time I have. You can make everything from scratch or take short cuts. Either way, if you use fresh fruit, that will be the star of the dessert.

So what summer fruits make for the best desserts? My favorites are strawberries, rhubarb, peaches and blueberries. If you’ve ever found yourself confused by all the different kinds of desserts, let’s break down the differences. Pies are probably

the easiest to identify. A pie typically has a buttery pastry crust on the bottom and sometimes on the top.

Many years ago my kids and I came in second place in the Margate Farmers Market peach pie contest and I wrote an entire blog post about my secrets to the perfect pie. Making your own crust will make your pie standout. It’s not hard to do, just find a good recipe.

As for the fruit, once you mix it with sugar and anything else (I add a splash of lemon juice), let it sit for about fifteen minutes to let the flavors combine and use a slotted spoon when adding the fruit to the crust. This will avoid a soggy crust.

A pie usually cooks for about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes.

When I’m short on time and cannot make my own pie crust, I opt for a crisp. A fruit crisp usually has a topping mixture of flour, oats, sugar and butter. One of the nice things about a crisp is that it only cooks for about a half hour and it doesn’t need

to look pretty like a pie. Even though it doesn’t have a fancy lattice crust, a fruit crisp is always delicious.

A cobbler is a fruit dessert with a biscuit topping. The topping can be made from scratch with just a few basic ingredients or you can use a biscuit mix like Bisquick.

Similar to a crisp, it doesn’t require a lot of fussing because the topping gets dropped by the spoonful on top of the fruit. It’s also quick to assemble and takes about forty-five minutes in the oven.

No matter what kind of fruit dessert you choose to make, one thing is for sure. Besides filling your house with a delicious smell, it will always taste better topped with vanilla ice cream. Next time you visit your local farmers market or go blueberry picking, stock up on some extras so you can make a pie, crisp or cobbler.

You don’t need a special occasion to make a fruit dessert. It will make an ordinary night extraordinary!

Ingredients ▶6 cups peaches, peeled and sliced ▶1 teaspoon cornstarch ▶1/2 teaspoon cinnamon ▶1 cup old fashioned oats ▶1/2 cup flour ▶1/4 cup maple syrup ▶3 tablespoons coconut oil ▶1/2 teaspoon cinnamon ▶1/2 teaspoon salt ▶optional:

vanilla ice cream

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350. Combine peaches, cornstarch and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Pour into a greased 8x8 inch baking dish. In a bowl combine oats through salt.

Stir together, will be clumpy. Using a spoon or your fingers, drop spoonfuls on top of peach mixture until most of peaches covered.

Cook for 30 minutes or until top starts to brown. Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream if desired.

Diatoms have cell walls containing silica, forming “houses of glass” called frustules. Each of the over one hundred thousand species of diatoms has a specific shape and pattern, forming a seemingly unlimited array of dazzling designs. The fossilized remains of these diatoms form deposits that are made into a soft powder that can be sprinkled on plants infected with insects. Kelly was devoted to becoming an actress. At the age of 19, she starred in several Broadway performances and live television programs. She would soon become a star of stage and screen. As a Hollywood actress, Kelly starred in her first major motion picture in 1951.

Fish is good for your health

’m fortunate in my role as a private practice nutritionist to be able to work with people and their families. They’re just like me, trying to get dinner on the table after a long day and make the best food choices for their families that they can. They often ask about some of the same things and I’ve collected some reliable resources over the years that I’d love to share with you, too.

It’s no secret that seafood can pack a punch when it comes to nutrition.

It’s included in the diets of some of the healthiest populations around the world and many cultures have a long history of enjoying seafood in traditional diets.

So there’s been a lot of attention on omega-3s and there’s a huge body of research out there. In fact, omega-3s are one of the most studied nutrients of all.

Here’s a quick rundown of what we know about the benefits of omega-3s: Heart Health: Enjoying seafood on a regular basis can help lower blood pressure, decrease triglyceride levels, and increase consumption of omega-3 fatty acids.

Brain Health: Seafood is a rich source of EPA and DHA, the fatty acids that can be protective for brain health in adults and support healthy brain development in infants and children. That’s why it’s recommended that pregnant women meet the recommended intake for sea-

food (two servings per week) to support a healthy pregnancy.

Depression and Mood: There appears to be a link between high consumption of seafood and lower rates of depression in cultures that eat a lot of fish. Omega-3s may also help with depression and other mood disorders, but more research is needed and supplements should not be considered a primary treatment.

So if you’ve been curious about cooking fish and seafood, the nutrition or safety of seafood, or what a nutritionist shops for, read on for answers to some of the most commonly asked seafood questions.

Can I get the same benefits from fish if it’s fresh, frozen or canned?

This is the #1 most asked seafood question and the answer is fortunately, yes. There is little or no nutritional difference between fresh, frozen, and canned seafood. We are lucky to have an abundance of options that fit many budgets. Plus, for most of us here in the USA, it’s not always practical or affordable to purchase fresh seafood. In fact, frozen or canned options are actually what I prefer because it’s often less expensive and better quality than some of the fresh options where I shop.

Does everyone need Omega 3 supplements?

This is a tough one to answer because it depends. And I know that answer is likely not what you’re looking for, but it’s true. I use a “food first” approach and aim to get most of my nutrition from my plate, not a supplement. But there are times when nutrition needs change or it’s difficult to get 100% of your daily nutrition from food. In those times, a high quality supplement can help fill the gaps. Just remember that a supplement should be just that – supplemental to

your diet. There are pros and cons to each approach, just like with everything else in life. Supplements can be helpful for people who can’t or don’t consume seafood. Allergies are a concern for some and other people choose to eat a plant-based or vegan diet.

I don’t really like fish, what’s the best way to start eating more fish?

This is a great question because it’s always exciting whenever someone wants to explore their options. And there are so many to choose from. I think most people that are hesitant to add more seafood are wary of the fishy taste, so usually I recommend starting with white fish. This is a category of fish that’s less “fishy” tasting because of a lower fat content. Fat carries flavor, so oily fish such as salmon has a much different taste and texture. Here are some varieties of fish that might be a good place to start: cod, halibut, or tilapia, freshwater fish like trout or catfish, tuna from cans or pouches.

Seafood like shellfish or crustaceans are another good place to start if you don’t enjoy fish. Shrimp or scallops can be less intimidating because of their smaller size. If you don’t want to commit to a full serving, you can just test the waters with a piece or two. And of course, there’s always crab and lobster that are usually served in really yummy ways with lots of butter for flavor or sauces for dipping.

Don’t start with something like mussels or oysters – the texture and appearance might not be the most encouraging for newbie, but they’re still delicious and might be something you enjoy later.

Tinned or canned fish can be really affordable, but might also be intimidating.

↘Continued from 20 Sardines and anchovies, as nutritious as they are, might not have a lot of appeal if you’re cautious about eating fish that still looks like…you know…a fish. But keep an open mind, there is great taste and nutrition to be had by expanding your options.

How can I get my fish to taste better?

This is one of my favorite seafood questions. There are subtle differences in the taste and texture of fish and that can help guide your culinary adventures in the kitchen. Here’s a preview of a section from the cookbook, “The Pescatarian Cookbook”, that can help with this question. Consider these five things when building delicious flavor in a recipe with fish or seafood: Cooking Method: Smoking, grilling, and baking fish yield very different flavors. Experiment with how you prepare your favorite fish to refresh your routine.

Crank the Heat. No, not the spice level. Simply try to serve your hot entrees hot. As food cools, it’s less likely to carry aromas into your mouth and nasal cavity. By serving your meal immediately, you enhance your awareness of flavor without adding a single ingredient. Season Early; flavor blooms in a dish when elements cook together. You can create more balance between salt, fat, acidity, and sweetness when you introduce seasonings earlier in the cooking process versus adding just before serving.

Keep an Open Mind. You may see ingredients in these recipes that make you question whether they belong. But heat, acid, and time change how flavors interact so don’t be afraid to experiment.

Trust your taste buds to let you know whether it’s worth repeating.

Savor the Moment. Mindfulness is often the final ingredient needed to create harmony in a meal. Regardless of how a dish is prepared or seasoned, tuning into your enjoyment of the eating experience leaves a lasting impression.

Is it ok to buy fish that isn’t wild caught? In my humble opinion, yes.

There are many different ways to source seafood and fish. Not all of them are environmentally friendly, so I definitely recommend doing your homework to make sure your choices align with what you feel is most important. Not all farmed fish is bad and not all wild caught fish is good. I like to use Fish watch and Seafood Watch (which also has an app!) to guide my choices when I’m shopping.

Is it safe to eat fish with all the Mercury? The real risk is actually eating too little fish, not too much. But mercury concerns are valid and something to be aware of. It’s rare to see mercury toxicity from seafood consumption but it does happen if someone were to only eat high-mercury fish. Mercury is a neurotoxin so definitely something to watch out for to avoid some serious side effects. Here are four common species to be aware of: King Mackerel, Shark, Swordfish, White or albacore tuna. Just be aware that mercury is found in low or trace amounts in most fish, not just these four species. It is ingested as part of their natural diets and accumulates in the flesh. However, the guidelines to consume eight to twelve ounces of fish per week are established as safe levels of intake. Advisories are also issued through state and local health departments and the EPA (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency) if there is concern for high mercury levels in local or domestic fish.

For pregnant women, Big Eye Tuna (like the type used in sushi) is the one to avoid. Otherwise, there is no risk to using tuna as an option to get your recommended two servings of seafood.

ne morning, 43 Years ago, on July 9, 1977, two planes crashed into the ocean. The first occurred in Atlantic City and the second in Ocean City. It is believed to be due to a sudden heavy fog that engulfed the area that morning.

The first plane crashed in the ocean near North Carolina Avenue, in Atlantic City, about 60 feet beyond the swimmers on that beach.

Jim Shilling, was a 22 year old Atlantic City Beach Patrol lifeguard getting ready to begin his shift at 10:30 that morning. Jim was one of several first responder life guards at the scene and assisted in extracting and rescuing the pilot of the plane.

"It was the wildest day ever on the beach!" said Jim, recounting the days

The next day, Jim and his fellow lifeguards went to the hospital to visit the pilot they had rescued, Ed Gibson, who had been flying a banner plane on that fateful day. Unfortunately, the pilot in the other plane crash in Ocean City did not survive. Jim is quick to point out the rescue was a team effort, rather than just him. He credits Paul Steelman, Scott Ruppert, Ed Byrnes, Tony Tripician, Larry Schuler and Marty Friel, along with the entire Atlantic City Beach Patrol.

Jim continued to lifeguard in Atlantic City for 25 years, from 19741999 and will go down in history as the "Singing Lifeguard."

Today, 43 years later, Jim Shilling (also known by his stage name, Jim Craine) hosts a radio show on WOND Newstalk 1400 and is lead vocalist of the Jim Craine and the Atlantic City Allstars band. Back to School Decisions Amidst Covid

I am excited to introduce myself as the new Moms Vibe columnist. As a longtime Shore Local contributor, I am looking forward to bringing forth thoughts and conversation topics in a new format. I have the honor of being the momma bear to a 10-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy. As we venture into this new weekly column, I hope that you will be open to hearing what I have to say about this wild adventure that we call, “Motherhood.” Here we go!

Kicking this off with a topic that is heavy on every parent’s mind: back-toschool in the age of Covid-19. This is obviously a loaded topic with many moving parts and countless opinions, questions, decisions to be made, and a lot of fear.

That being said, I want to encourage you to be gentle with each other. We all have different situations and life experiences and if there is one thing that we can do for each other as a village of mothers, it is to be kind and empathetic with one

another. We are all called to the same mission: raising the next generation of humans.

Remember, only you walk in your own shoes. Only you know what the best decision for your family is.

At the time of this writing, New Jersey has rolled out an in-depth guide to returning to school in the fall. “The Road Back: Restart and Recovery Plan for Education” can be found in entirety on NJ.gov. The plan, released by Gov. Phil Murphy and The Department of Education on June 26th, envisions public schools opening for in-person instruction and operations in some capacity this September. The State of NJ and the NJDOE worked with approximately 50 education and community organizations, over 300 superintendents, and surveyed nearly 300,000 parents to create guidance for school reopening in the fall. The guidance serves as a tool kit, as each district must ultimately roll out its reopening plans.

The guidance includes several health and safety standards that must be prioritized. These standards include social distancing within the classroom, man-

datory face coverings for school staff along with encouraged face coverings for students when social distancing cannot be maintained, limiting capacity, and strict cleaning/disinfecting procedures.

Many districts have discussed plans that include staggered in-person learning in combination with digital home learning for students. While countless families are awaiting the release of their district’s plans, parents and teachers have a lot of questions.

If you spend any time on social media, you may have seen the countless threads of questions from teachers about their future. Our teachers are passionate about teaching and many desperately want to return to school, however, they are also concerned

about their future. While the obvious question is their health and the health of their students, teachers and staff also are inquiring about the infinite number of “what if” scenarios. For example, what if a teacher tests positive for Covid-19? Do they quarantine for 14 days? Do they use all their sick days? What if they run out of sick days due to quarantine? Do the students then need to quarantine because they have been exposed? What about teachers who are married to other teachers? Do two classrooms then need to be shut down?

What about substitutes? Who is going to be willing to sub for a classroom that has been exposed? How are schools ensuring proper ventilation? What about sharing school supplies? If a teacher or student gets severely ill or passes away from Covid-19, is the district prepared with proper therapy solutions for the students and staff?

The questions go on, and on, and on. It is a never-ending rabbit hole of concern for teachers and parents alike.

Parents are also being torn. Countless families do not have the family

dynamic or financial situation to be able to keep their children home. Many parents rely on the resources that the school provides, from food resources to therapies that can only be offered in a school setting, parents and students depend on many educational necessities provided in a school setting.

I surveyed several South Jersey moms, asking them their thoughts and input as it relates to returning to school.

Opinions and decisions vary from family to family but many of the fears remain the same. We all want to provide the best for our children from their education to their health and everywhere in between.

Linda Vaughan, a mother of two school-aged children from Williamstown shared that the decision over what to do in September brings her to tears. Her 10-year-old daughter suffers from asthma and already misses several days of school due to complications.

With the additional threat of Covid-19, she is torn on how she can consider sending her back to the classroom. As a single mother, she expresses that there is no financial way she could homeschool her children and has even considered retiring and looking for a part-time job to make up her missed salary.

“How any parent cannot be concerned is beyond me. I feel like I have no choice but to send mine back even with all of my apprehension and my brain is tormented by it all,” expressed Vaughan.

South Jersey mom, Alicia Venafro, shares her reasons for sending her children to school in September. She is confident that going back to school is best for her family for various reasons including the fact that she and her husband are both essential employees.

She expresses that she does not feel equipped or encouraged to homeschool her children and that her son has a learning disability that can only be helped by trained professionals in a school setting.

Brigantine mother of two, Leslie Jesperson shares, “I also can’t see how the proposed plans I’m reading would make any more sense to send them to school.

I feel pressure and overwhelmed. One kid would love to be homeschooled, the other would hate it. I feel like the emotional, mental, and social risks need to be taken into consideration just as much as COVID-19 risks when our schools are forming plans. I don’t have the answers.

I wish I did.”

Mom of 5, Krista Schlitzer is concerned for the future of education for her children. She expressed frustration with home learning at the end of last year, sharing that her twin third-graders fell behind drastically. In school, they both have had additional help with ELA aids. In the age of home learning in the Spring, they were not equipped to teach themselves. Krista is also caring

for three other children and explains that she is not a teacher, the living room is not a classroom, and she feels her children need the classroom setting to thrive.

“Education is their future and I would hate, as awful as this pandemic has been, to rob them of the education they need in order to succeed in their lives,” expressed Schlizter, “Someone needs to love the children enough that they come to a solution other than returning to the same remote learning plan which did not work for so many families.”

As for me, my children are going into kindergarten and fifth grade and I have not yet decided what we will do. I feel each and every concern presented here as well as by parents, teachers, and students across the country. To be honest, I’m scared. I just don’t know what the right answer is for my children yet. I fear the impacts of their psychological,

emotional, and physical health. My plan is to wait until Mays Landing rolls out their plans for September and try to make an informed and well thought out decision from there.

Information is constantly unfolding and a lot can change between now and September. So as we stand by, waiting to make decisions, I want to encourage you again to be kind to your fellow parents. There is no easy answer to any of this. We are all entitled to decision making without judgement. We all care about the health and safety of our families, and have genuine concerns for the well being of our communities.

Immerse Yourself in Beauty and Nature at the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge

ith summer here and many places still closed or operating with restrictions, it can be challenging to find activities to do with the family. So, now is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the beautiful environment we are so blessed to have access to in South Jersey. A great place to be able to do this is the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (723 Great Creek Rd, Galloway, NJ 08205, United States).

The refuge was originally founded in 1939 with the intention of protecting migratory birds as it is on an important Atlantic Flyway flight path. It now serves as an important habitat for a wide range of species and the tidal waters house nurseries, and spawn-

ing and breeding grounds for fish.

Although the primary concern of the refuge is to meet the habitat needs of the American black duck and the Atlantic brant, two species of bird, there are also a number of other animals that live there.

Throughout the year, you can see resident species such as white-tailed deer.

Around this time of the year, the ducklings hatch making it peak time for cuteness. Now is also an excellent time to see turtles sunning themselves by the water. Bald eagles are sometimes spotted using the refuge habitats although this is more likely in December time.

There are several ways to enjoy the refuge and take full advantage of everything there is to see. The most popular way to enjoy it is Wildlife Drive – an 8-mile, one-way, unpaved road which leads you through the heart of the woodlands and wetlands.

There are plenty of photo ops including two observation towers that

will enable you to spot the impressive wildlife with a birdseye view. This is also a great trail to hike or cycle, but make sure you bring water with you.

The Leeds Eco-trail is a slightly shorter trail at 5 miles and is located between forest and salt marshes, offering visitors the unique opportunity to see life on the fringe of these two habitats. There are a number of shorter trails (less than a mile long) which are great for young kids and visitors that are less mobile.

All trails provide the opportunity to see some incredible animals and fully immerse in nature. With permits, you can also go fishing and crabbing in the refuge.

They also offer environmental education for schools or groups wanting to find out more about the wildlife.

This is an amazing way to engage students in nature and allow them to see some of the amazing wildlife that we are so lucky to have right on our doorstep.

The refuge is not strictly in one area but actually covers a large portion of the South Jersey coastline that include several different locations. Each location is slightly different and you can see a variety of nature. For example, the part of the refuge that is by the boardwalk is a great place to spot crabs during the summer. You can see them right from the boardwalk.

They conduct regular surveys and monitor population levels and habitat use to ensure it is in the best possible state for wildlife. As it is run by a highly experienced team of biologists, there is a small fee for park entrance. A private vehicle costs only $4 and a walker or cyclist costs $2.

So perhaps you would like to do more than just visit and actively get involved with the great work that they do. For budding biologists and conservationists, they offer summer internships. An internship with them gives you the opportunity to learn first-hand how they maintain the habitat by conducting surveys, monitoring populations of bird and plants, and assisting with environmental education to nurture the next generation of biologists. The deadline for this summer´s internships has

passed, but keep an eye out on their website for information for next year. For a less formal way of getting involved, volunteering is a great way to help the staff achieve goals they would not have otherwise been able to. To volunteer, you can fill out an application form on their website. ecently, I had the pleasure of dining out for the first time in almost 5 months.

And by out, I mean outside as it’s our only option these days.

Honestly, I was a little hesitant to go out. Not because of the pandemic.

I believe in the use of masks and their efficacy. The reason I was hesitant is

because... I’m rusty. I haven’t talked to anyone except my boyfriend and my cat (yep, my cat) for a pretty uncomfortable amount of time. I wasn’t worried about germs. I was worried about conversation. I chose a place

I felt had the charm of an effortless good time - The Irish Pub in Atlantic City.

While there, I had the pleasure of meeting and having what turned out to be an electrifying conversation with The Irish Pub’s owner, Cathy Burke.

We spoke about the new restrictions in place. “As I was learning about all the new precautions and mandates, I felt like I was in a bizarre episode of ‘I Love Lucy’,” Cathy said.

Hearing this promptly brought images to my mind of Cathy behind a conveyor belt full of masks (instead of chocolate candy - as it was in one of the most memorable I Love Lucy episodes).

I quickly learned Cathy was quite the opposite of the famously scatterbrained redhead. She knew what she needed to do and did it.

New staff have been hired strictly to enforce seating limits as well as thorough and continuous cleaning of all areas. There are hand sanitizing stations galore. “We held multiple safety meetings to make sure everyone knew how to work

safely, properly and efficiently,” Cathy said proudly. I could tell she’s incredibly concerned with her guests’ safety and is on top of everything.

“We built the patio in 1992, it’s got more of a European feel to it,” Cathy said. It features eye catching Amish built gazebos, wrought iron, ornate brickwork and fascinating ethereal statuaries. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend you do, and you’re welcome (in advance).

Suddenly, I don’t know why I was so hesitant, I felt comfortable.

With plans in place if it rains, there are still areas of the patio and bar that remain completely covered over. And while she will close the patio at the mere whiff of imminent danger, she’s not afraid to stay open and the guests

“People like to sit outside. We’re right next to the Boardwalk and even better, near the ocean,” Cathy added.

The patio has withstood hurricanes, floods, derechos, late nights, early mornings, St. Patrick’s Days, Bag Days (a serious celebration at the Irish Pub) and every other day, be it a holiday or otherwise. It can stand the test of time, that’s for sure.

“When we reopened everyone came in and they were very respectful. Everyone used masks, distanced themselves, the whole thing. They just wanted to come back. It was time to feel good again,” Cathy said.

I added people would have probably played a game of Simon Says if she had asked. Cathy’s response: “They’re good people, they’re Irish Pub people.”

As I looked around, I swear I heard a collective exhale among the patrons. People were being people again! I was appreciating things I have taken for granted like being together,

aren’t afraid to stay there.

“I’m not afraid of a hurricane! We’d have to pay people to leave the bar over rain. There have been times there has been flooding inside the bar... they stay,” Cathy said with a big grin.

Alas, my time at the Inn had to come to an end. It was time to let Cathy’s next guests enjoy the idyllic patio and the crisp ocean air. I’ve hogged this coveted spot for too long. It was nice to get out, talk, eat and relax. It was just what I needed.

I felt safe, and I made a new friend.

I’m glad I chose The Irish Pub to enter back into the world of outdoor dining and seeing other people. I’m glad they were Irish Pub people.

r. Jon Regis president of Reliance Medical Group (their offices have been open through out the pandemic) discussed with me, why Black people seem to be suffering more from Covid 19.

Dr. Regis- First let me say. That we are staffing, the city of Atlantic City’s only free testing sites. We have one at the Bader Field site and one at The Show Boat Parking Lot. (Testing is only for AC residents at this time.)

Why are Black people being hit so hard by Covid 19 at this moment?

Dr. Regis- Poverty. Living Conditions. Lifestyle. Also we see that many of the essential/frontline workers are Black people. People like sanitation workers are very essential to the whole community whether you are black or white. The problem is the rest of the family may be at home but 1 or more family members may have to work with sanitation, or as a nurse, or in a food store and bring the virus home to the family. Many of us did not have the luxury to just stay at home.

What are your thoughts on Black People and the healthcare system?

Especially as they relate to Coronavirus?

Dr. Regis-It’s a never ending story. I have been talking about “racial profiling” in health care for so many years.

Out of the 21 leading causes of death here in America, Black people lead in 20 of the 21 causes and that was before Covid 19. With Covid 19 it’s just a continuation of what’s been happening since we arrived here in this country. In short, many Black people cannot stay home from work to quarantine. Many Black people live in closer proximity to immediate and extended family.

Many Black People do not have insurance or are under insured and these factors contribute to the spread and mortality from Covid. However, not related to Covid we see that people that are Black in affluent communities, also suffer from things such as Post Pregnancy Mortality and in some cases these women suffer more than their poorer Black counterparts. America should realize that the stress put on Black people in this country in trying to make up gaps in justice, education, health and economics is real and it is killing people of color.

Let’s Discuss Lifestyle Dr. Regis- Lifestyle choices can negatively effect your lungs and kidneys if you contract Covid 19. Lifestyle is the piece we can control. We need to be more active and exercise more.

Too many of us are morbid obese and eat too many fried foods.

Many of us do not see doctors for economic reasons and for cultural reasons. What would be the first steps to change that behavior?

However, it is important that we get a complete physical every year to stay on top of and prevent complications from things like diabetes and high blood pressure. I would say...ask your friends who their health care providers are. If cost is an issue in Atlantic City , Southern New Jersey Family Medical Center offers free treatment and care across the board. They are a federally funded practice run by great, qualified Black people.

When it comes to our health unfortunately, it’s just not going to be easy for us. Atlantic City right now is a food dessert, so we need to find the pop up farmer’s markets, we may

need to call Uber and Lyft for discount rides. However, if we fail to take care of our health...eat chips every day...we are going to wind up paying the price.

Just like a smoker. A smoker may die from “cardiac arrest” or “emphysema” but we all know it was those cigarettes that killed them.

un fact…I watched a lot of “Action News” growing up, and probably viewed it the most my junior year of high school. One thing I remember vividly is that Dave Roberts, the weatherman, would always say at this time of year, “we’re going to have another day with the three H’s…Hazy…Hot…and Humid!” That definitely describes how things feel at the shore right now, but I hope you’re reading this on a beach somewhere, or in the cool air conditioning as you social distance and wear your mask.

Since I last wrote, the Phillies continue their “summer camp” and are getting closer to playing actual baseball. And wait until you learn how they plan to make their home games feel less like an “empty” stadium and more like a normal experience. The NHL teams that are going to return have done so and are getting ready to leave for Toronto or Edmonton. Most of the Sixers are in Orlando, inside the bubble, as their games are right around the corner. The Eagles are continuing to deal with the DeSean Jackson situation.

In golf, I made a slight mistake last week, but it’s easily correctible. We’ll call it a “mulligan” for the columnist. Oh, and I sat down and did something last week that I rarely do regarding watching sports on TV. From the entertainment world, I got to show a 1987 favorite movie to my girlfriend and her son that they had never seen. Hopefully you’ll check it out too, if you haven’t. I signed up for the new PEACOCK streaming service. “Tough as Nails” was everything I hoped for…you should

definitely check that out too. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● It’s been fascinating to see the Phillies get ready for the 60-game season at an empty Citizens Bank Park. Not long after I wrote last week’s column, catcher J.T. Realmuto hit a grand slam in an intra-squad game. Star outfielder Bryce Harper crossed home plate and yelled out “SIGN HIM” at the top of his lungs, knowing the cameras would be rolling.

Harper has made no secret of the fact that he wants Realmuto in Philly for the long haul. The premier catcher can become a free agent after the season, and what the Phillies will do will most likely hang over the team on a daily basis until something gets done. ● I completely see both sides of the Realmuto issue. He’s the top catcher in baseball and wants to be paid as such.

The Phillies are trying to remind him that this isn’t a normal season and they may not have the revenue to pay him an extraordinary amount. As a lifelong Phillies fan, I just want them to find a way and not lose this guy. If there’s one thing that bothers the Philly sports fan, it’s losing a player because you didn’t want to pay him what he was worth. I mean, speaking of worth, when Jayson Werth left, I felt that price was too high.

But, I think they can find a number for Realmuto and pair him with Harper as the 1-2 punch the Phillies need. Two bona fide superstars on the same team! ● Of course, I’m not the GM, and I’m definitely not John Middleton, who has to answer to an ownership group that is going to see major losses in revenue this year with no fans, concessions, etc. I get it. Doesn’t mean I have to like it, but I get it. I’m with Bryce though; "Sign him!" ● Speaking of no fans, the Phillies have

released some of their plans on how the home game experience will be at Citizens Bank Park when baseball begins on July 24th. According to David Buck, Executive Vice President, the Phillies will pump canned crowd noise through their PA system, cardboard cutouts of fans will fill the seats, and the Phillie Phanatic will roam the ballpark alone while practicing social distancing. The plan is to take audio tracks from the popular Sony video game, MLB The Show, and to mix those in to provide a gentle background to the regular noise on the field.

One thing that some teams have already said they will do, and the Phillies appear to be leaning in this direction, is to allow fans to purchase a cardboard cutout of themselves in their seat. The Oakland A’s have already done this with the added bonus that if a foul ball hits your cutout, you’ll be sent the foul ball…! The Mets are doing the same thing with proceeds going toward a COVID-19 relief fund. I could easily see the Phillies doing something like this and think it’s a great idea.

In the NHL, as I write this, the Flyers skated as a full group at their practice facility in Voorhees for the first time in 124 days. This is Stage 3 of the NHL’s return to play, and I, for one, am stoked. The Flyers will take part in a round-robin event first before starting

the Stanley Cup Playoffs. As the 4 seed currently, they can only move up and not down coming out of round-robin play, so I think this is a perfect scenario for them.

34 players are in camp, including goalie Carter Hart, but center Nolan Patrick is not on the list. There are 18 forwards, 12 defenseman and four goalies in camp right now, Patrick has been out for the entire season with a migraine disorder and it appears the plan is for him to try & rejoin the club next year. In the meantime, 20-year-old defenseman Egor Zamula was on the ice. Zamula was a free-agent signing by then GM Ron Hextall in 2018 and we’ll see if he can make enough of an impact to get onto the travel roster. I think this is more a reward and a “look-see” on a prospect that’s had some health issues and a back surgery.

Since we’re on surgery, defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere revealed that he had another minor knee surgery about seven weeks ago. The guy they call “Ghost” says it’s no big deal and he should be ready to go in Toronto.

My final Flyers item is on Mark Friedman, as the 24-year-old is generally regarded as the #8 defenseman on the roster, and he gets a new contract extension worth a reported $725,000.

Friedman is a good “insurance policy” to have in case one of the top six guys gets hurt, or “Ghost” can’t go. Good move by GM Chuck Fletcher to sign him to a two-year extension.

Did you see Sixers center Joel Embiid don a full hazmat suit for the team flight down to Florida the other day? Embiid is nothing if not watchable, and you weren’t sure if his decision to do that

Since I last wrote, the Eagles fined, but did not release wide receiver DeSean Jackson. They did say the fine was only the first step in a process that they felt he should take to learn more about the Holocaust & Jewish history. As such, Jackson participated in a Zoom call with 94-year-old Edward Mosberg, who is a survivor of the Holocaust. He also accepted an invitation from Mosberg to go to Poland and actually walk the grounds of Auschwitz at some point.

With the world still grappling with COVID-19 restrictions and such, it’s not clear when D-Jax will actually visit Auschwitz, but to me this is a good step in the right direction toward Jackson making an attempt to learn more and not forward insensitive or hateful comments by others again.

Remember, the Eagles coaches are already in-house now and they are under quarantine. Rookies, select vets & QB’s will report on July 22nd. The team will use both the NovaCare Complex and Lincoln Financial Field as it complies with pandemic protocols for training camp.

Former Sixer and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley was there, and didn’t finish DFL…that honor went to former Titans RB Eddie George. I watched the entire Union match against NYCFC the other morning on ESPN when it started at 9 a.m. I usually save my soccer watching for when the World Cup rolls around, but here was a Philadelphia team, playing LIVE on ESPN. the John Deere Classic was abruptly called off because of COVID-19, so the folks at Workday agreed to sponsor a tour stop at Jack’s Place the week BEFORE the Memorial. What a tournament too, as Collin Morikawa hung on long enough to beat Justin Thomas on the 3rd playoff hole to win. The finish had multiple dramatic moments and even though there’s no gallery, I continue to be mesmerized each week by the drama that the PGA Tour can create. I felt bad for Thomas who was three strokes up with three to play, but man was it fun to watch.

Now, they’ll have the regular Memorial, on the same course, but it won’t be anything like last week. The greens will be faster, the rough will be a little higher, and a guy named Eldrick is playing.

That’s right, Tiger Woods is scheduled to return to regular competition at this weekend’s Memorial. He’s paired in a group with Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka for the first & second round.

I can’t wait!

As usual, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as one of my great pleasures is showing a movie that I loved in the 80’s to my girlfriend’s 24-year-old son. So, I DVR’d and we watched the 1987 comedy “Summer School” the other day. Making things even better was that Susan had never seen it either…! I was 16-years-old when Mark Harmon & Kirstie Alley had the two starring roles in this lighthearted movie about a gym teacher who is forced to teach Summer School and actually makes a difference in his students lives. I had forgotten it was written & directed by the now late, great, Carl Reiner. There are some aspects to the plot that wouldn’t hold up today, for example 16-year-old Courtney Thorne Smith having the hots for her teacher and actually moving in with him for a brief period of time. However, the movie overall will make you chuckle and maybe remember what high school was like for you in the 80’s. “Summer School”, by Carl Reiner…I definitely give it five PT’s.

On TV, I signed up for the free version of the PEACOCK streaming service.

Haven’t watched any of it yet, but I know a lot of the shows I loved in my youth were on NBC and “Must See TV”, so I figured I might as well sign up at the launch. I doubt I’d pay for the service though.

Lastly, “Tough as Nails” on CBS was awesome. If you’re not watching it, you

still have time to catch up. It’s hosted

by Phil Keoghan from “The Amazing Race," and it’s a reality show competition about people who hang drywall, sheetrock, weld, etc. So far, they have team competitions and individual competitions and I will never look at a wheelbarrow or a brick paving tool the same way again. It’s definitely something I recommend watching.

Whats Your "Why" to Exercise?

I

’m sure we can all list at least ten reasons why we should workout. What I really want to know is why you want to exercise on a regular basis? What’s driving you? There are two types of motivational forces and they are intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. What’s the difference between the two driving forces that motivates us to exercise?

Intrinsic motivation is internal and drives someone to workout for his or her own satisfaction or fulfillment.

It’s a relationship that someone has with a workout regimen or routine. A person who is intrinsically motivated, loves to feel the burn or fatigue from actually doing it. This type of person enjoys working out and gets the benefit of those endorphins, that “runners high.”

I’m going to recommend reading the next sentence and repeating it until it sticks. Motivation is an internal process that directs us in a way towards a goal. It moves us to get there.

We all have goals and of course want to achieve them. The intrinsically motivated will crush their goals and never stop going. Goals can vary such as, to get stronger, to get off Cholesterol medication or to lose weight after having your little bundle of joy.

Let’s delve into extrinsic motivation. I don’t particularly care for this type because it can be very situational and not long term. Extrinsic motivation is external. External motivators could be prize money for a weight loss contest or recognition from a significant other. The reward is the motivator and not the task itself of working out. I’ve heard this a lot over the years, “I have a wedding to get ready for or I need to be bathing suit ready because summer is around the corner.” These are extrinsic motivators. But what happens when summer is over?

We all know that we need to exercise but actually doing it, is a whole other story. It takes some serious discipline and internal yearning to get up and make it happen. I, myself have struggled with being consistent because if we are honest, life can throw us some major curve balls and throw us off track.

It’s what you do to get back on it that matters most.

Get up, brush yourself off and crush it! Fitness is a journey so don’t be too hard on yourself if you’ve gotten off track. Cut yourself some slack. Is that little voice in your head reminding you to get back to it? In our current situation, COVID-19, there have been many reasons or excuses that we could have used. Our gyms are closed.

If there’s ever been a more crucial time to exercise, it’s now. Our mental and physical health need it and our immune systems become so much

richer because of it. If you rely on a gym or fitness center then you’ve had to get really creative with a whole new game plan for your workouts.

I love (not really) the excuse of not having the energy to workout. Did you know that exercising regularly increases your energy levels?

My advice as a whole would be to individually identify your current exercise motivators. Just think about what drives you to do it. Is it health and wellness (intrinsic) or a Caribbean vacation your planning and you want to rock a bikini body?

Mindset is everything and if you’re having trouble adhering to your exercise routine, then there is a disconnect that needs to be identified. That little voice in your head can either motivate you or sabotage you. Working out is so beneficial for so many reasons. Find your why, write it down and believe in yourself. You are more than capable of achieving your goals.

How reproduce and multiply your plants

y husband once said, “I will never feel guilty about buying books.”

Of course I responded, “Then I will never feel guilty about buying flowers.” But alas, there are limits.

You can increase the amount of plants in your garden economically through propagation. Flowers can be propagated, or multiplied, in different ways.

Some plants are easy to grow from seed, but others can be rooted from cuttings—taking a piece of the stem and planting it so that you have a new plant.

You may wish to produce duplicates of your plants for various reasons. If you have a beloved or rare plant, it’s a good idea to take a cut-

ting so if something goes wrong, it is not lost forever. You can also take a cutting of a tender plant that won’t survive the winter. Perhaps it’s too large to bring the entire plant indoors, but you could start a smaller version from a cutting, and have it ready to replant outdoors in the spring. Or you may just want multiples of a favorite flower. Planting in masses results in a much more pleasing and dramatic impact of color. A single lavender plant is very nice, but a field of lavender is breathtaking. So instead of breaking the budget with a truckload of purchased flowers, take free samples—from yourself!

Hydrangeas are great plants to propagate from cuttings. Simply cut from the end of a non-flowering stem.

Choose a healthy, tender, green stem that is approximately four to six inches long and cut at least two inches below the leaf nodes (where the leaves are coming out). Keep your cuttings in water so they stay hydrated as you prepare your container. Fill your pot with potting soil or seed starting mix, and water so that the soil is damp but not soggy. To increase your chances of success, dip the stem cutting in a rooting hormone powder. This will promote

hrough the years people have had reason to modify coins minted by the United States mint for their own purpose. This can involve a single change for a persons’ pleasure such as cutting the design from the coin for use as a piece of jewelry or a commercial endeavor such as where some merchants in the 1800’s stamped their names or business names on coins as advertisement.

Another example is the love token where craftsmen traveling with fairs and carnivals during the mid/late 1800’s would, for a fee, engrave names, initials or designs on coins, mostly dimes. These are called love tokens as they typically were done to give as a present to ones’ sweetheart.

Another modification involved the Trade dollar, a coin created specifically for use in the orient and to be comparable with the Mexican eight reale coin which was in heavy use due to its consistent silver value. Because

the Trade dollar contained a different amount of silver than the regular silver dollar, it was not to be used as legal tender in the United States. I

t is here. We locals on the barrier islands knew it was coming. It does so every year starting in mid June and it built to a crescendo on July 4th. Summer crowds descending upon us as predictable as the swallows returning to Capistrano every year, yet I am still in awe at the influx of visitors on our roads, beaches, boardwalk and restaurants. Do not get me wrong. This is the lifeblood of our seaside community and I have learned to accept certain realities for instance going to the beach at off times, ordering take out an hour or more in advance and being hypervigilant of people hurling themselves in front of my car at crosswalks with families stretched out across the road like geese. That is just one of the challenges of driving in the shore communities. Motorist are crawling along in search of that most valuable asset, a parking spot near the beach. At any moment, this motorist may behave erratically, suddenly accelerating and pulling an abrupt U-turn upon spotting an open spot. Parking is always an issue, so the question arises regarding the etiquette of taking up two spaces or parking two close to a driveway. Bicyclists are riding on the sidewalks, joggers are running in bike lane, the Ventnor boardwalk is like Thunderdome with Lance Armstrong clones using people like pylons, more joggers,

strollers and amidst it all families trying to cross to and from the beach. Locals and visitors alike often seek the council of community Facebook pages to answer questions and stay informed. At times, these questions can be a great source of amusement and wonder. There are the routine questions about bike hours on the Ventnor boardwalk which admittedly, the signs are rather cryptic. When dogs are allowed on the beach, leashed or unleashed. Street cleaning dates and hours frequently pop up. Why are the showers on the beach and not on the boardwalk?

Be thankful that there are showers now.

Beach barbeques which are now allowed on Ventnor beaches predictably initiated some questions. Since the city does not want to have the remnants of charcoal left behind, only propane is allowed. One question was, “isn’t propane flammable?”

Well, isn’t that what you want? Perhaps I can sell that person some non-flammable propane to alleviate any concerns. Another person posted, “you expect me to drag a propane cylinder down to the beach.”

Well, no. You are not required to barbeque.

I just think it is great that our city is trying to foster a festive atmosphere during this challenging time. My wife and I have traveled extensively over the past year and when visiting other locales, we are aware that we are the “shoobies” and try not to create any undo fuss. The discovery of us being from New Jersey brings with it a certain notoriety; a panache if you will. It is a reputation that takes some undoing. It is wise to remember that we are all guests when we are traveling. Let us all try and have some patience with our visitors and to our visiting guests, please respect us locals and our towns. We promise we will try to stop for you in our crosswalks.

The The Historic Preservation Society of Upper Township is gathering artifacts as part of our new story-gathering project called "The Covid-19 Virus Year" 2020 in Upper Township. Even though we are no longer in the stay at home phase and businesses are reopening, the virus remains an impactful part of all of our lives and examples need to be archived for future reference. HPSUT hopes to gather photos as well as written experience stories / journal entries as Covid-19 artifacts that capture the time we all were spending at home during these trying weeks.

installed at the Tuckahoe Train Station as part of a grant obtained by the HPSUT). Text and photos cover the early days of railroading in our portion of northern Cape May County and the pivotal role of the Tuckahoe Station.

The Station sign photos, including some that appeared in the book Upper Township and Its Ten Villages, were obtained / selected, and text developed, by Robert Holden and Barbara Horan, members of the HPSUT Board.

The support for the sign project was obtained from the New Jersey Historical Commission grant funding, administered by the Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission.

Ocean City Tabernacle Hosts Best Selling Author, Radio Host

he Ocean City Tabernacle welcomes bestselling author and radio host Eric Metaxas for outdoor worship this Sunday, July 19, one service only at 9:30 AM. Bring your own chairs, if you are able. Folding chairs will also be available. Umbrellas and small canopies are welcome for shade. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held indoors with limited seating on a first-come, first served basis.
