e are in the midst of the hottest time of year. These are the days when you burn your feet on the sand trying to get to the beach and getting into your car feels like stepping into an oven. A malfunctioning air conditioner, whether in the car or at home, equates to a major crisis. As much as I love summer, sometimes the heat gets to me! "Staying cool" can refer to more than just your body temperature though. It can mean keeping your composure, calmness or level headedness. That's hard to do these days! With the pandemic still turning our world upside down. What initially felt like a short term disruption of life is now hitting four months with no end in sight. "Keeping cool" also means to not become angry or flustered with an adversary or opponent. These days it seems like no one is staying cool. Political polarization is greater and

nastier than ever leading to heated arguments. We seem to have lost the ability to agree to disagree. "Staying cool" is a skill, perhaps even a lost art. Staying calm, especially in the midst of chaos and high stress, is a superpower! The calmest person in a room is typically the most powerful. Calmness or staying cool requires mastery over one's self and emotions in all kinds of situations, not an easy task. As a mother of a son with autism, I have spent decades working on this. Sometimes I succeeded and sometimes I didn't. My son took his lead from me so it was critical that I maintained a calm demeanor, even in the midst of major meltdowns. Keeping my calm was always my best hope of getting him to restore his. The lessons I learned trying to "keep cool" in ALL situations have served me well in many other areas of my life. Social media seems to be the least cool place of all. With the news channels a close runner up. The commercials alone of the candidates and

parties attacking one another are draining. Still... I try because I think "keeping cool" typically leads to better outcomes for all. So often this summer though, the rules seem unjust, the future seems uncer tain and the air feels sweltering. It's at these times, I seek the ocean with it's massiveness, calming waves, and cool water. It whispers to me "everything's gonna be alright." In this issue of Shore Local we focus on the positive people, places, and events. We celebrate the resourcefulness of our businesses in their ability to adapt to our new climate. It is more critical than ever to support local businesses. Every dollar we spend will come back into our community or it will go to an out of state "big box" corporation. We choose today what our tomorrow will look like. Stay local & Stay cool South Jersey.

Peace & Love, Cindy

Focus on the Farm

Sahl’s Father Son Farm By Tammy Thornton

S

ummer in South Jersey can be summed up in three great words: beach, boardwalk, and berries. Sahl’s Father Son Farm in Galloway Township has you covered in the berry department. This year, Sahl’s became a member of Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA). CSA connects farmers with consumers through memberships or “shares”, that allow the members to receive a certain amount of produce through the growing season. According to localharvest.org, “for over 25 years, CSA has become a popular way for consumers to buy local, seasonal fruit food directly from the farmer.” Members have the advantage of “knowing” the farm and farmer and getting select produce, often having the option of picking it themselves. Farmers benefit by focusing their marketing during the off-season instead of the taking away from their time during the busy planting and harvesting months. In addition, it

gives the farmer an early payment to help with cash flow to provide funds for preseason farming necessities. Though this is the beginning of their participation in CSA, the farm has been in the Sahl family since 1867. Currently, sixth generation farmers Jeremy Sahl and his wife Melodie run the 100 acre farm. Their children help dad in the garden while Melodie runs the office management side of things. Jeremy’s “great-granddad and grand-

dad” were the first to incorporate the farm and establish the “Father Son Farm” brand that supplied local grocery stores as well as their own road-side stands. Though Jeremy’s dad did work the farm—including tractor work, planting, and harvesting—he could not focus on the farm as a business since his calling was as a pastor for 40 years. Both Jeremy’s dad and uncle were full-time pastors during that time. Jeremy, however,

had farming in his blood and always enjoyed helping at the farm. In 2009, he and his wife began reviving the business. This is their fourth year offering strawberries. In the next few weeks, blackberries will be available for picking, followed by sunflowers in August. Last fall, the farm planted blueberries which should have a small harvest ready in 2021, and a larger harvest in 2022. Sahl’s Father Son Farm does have

a small stand for the public, but their focus is their Berries and Blooms memberships. These CSA members can enjoy their share of strawberries, blackberries, and sunflowers. Though members receive top priority and quality, as produce becomes available

and plentiful, the general public is also invited to pick berries and flowers. In the fall, pumpkins will be available for both members and the public. While you are picking your berries, you can hear the goats and chickens on the farm. Normally, the Sahl’s

family farm offers lots of activities for children and their families. In the past, families have enjoyed events such as pig races, rubber duckie water races, and pony rides. In the fall, in addition to pumpkin picking, visitors have enjoyed hay rides and finding their way through the themed corn maze. Every year Sahl’s cuts the maze into a fun theme. Last year honored the 50th anniversary of the moonwalk with the “One Small Step and One Giant Leap” maze. Past themes have been the “Philly Special” in honor of the Philadelphia Eagles, and a Lucy the Elephant tribute. Of course, this year is no ordinary year. Sahl’s Father Son Farm is taking every precaution to keep its customers and staff safe. They have been doing their

best to follow procedures that the state government has issued. Customers picking produce in the garden must wear masks. In addition to the upcoming blackberry season in a few weeks, Sahl’s Father Son Farm is looking for ward to a bountiful harvest of sunflowers in August and September. An entire acre of sunflowers of various colors have been planted, as well as an additional acre of the familiar yellow sunflowers. If you would like more information about seasonal offerings or joining the Berries and Blooms CSA, go to their website: www.fathersonfarm.com or leave a message at (609) 965-9300. Often, the latest information can be found on Facebook at fathersonfarm. Tammy Thornton is a mom of four, a substitute teacher, and a Sunday school teacher. Surf's Up in Ventnor Dean Randazzo Surf School Opens

By Cindy Fertsch

F

ormer World Tour Professional Surfer, Dean Randazzo has teamed up with Shaun Magill to open Randazzo Surf School, the newest surf school in Ventnor City. Magill is a firefighter and EMT in Ventnor, and an avid surfer since the age of six. With Randazzo's legendary surf skills and Magill's expertise in safety, this duo is a parent's dream team. Beginning Monday, July 13th, Surf Camps will be running daily 8 -10 am on Harvard Avenue, South Side of the Ventnor Pier. The camp is open to kids 6-16 years of age and all abilities are welcome, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surfer. They will also be offering private and group lessons. Birthday parties and corporate events or team building events are available upon request. Children will be supervised by certified surf instructors from the time they arrive until they leave. "Safety is first," says Magill. "We teach students how to safely work their way in and out of the ocean, how to fall safely and what to do if they get caught in a rip current. Students will be educated about the tides, wind, rip currents,

undertows, and the power of the sea. Children at all levels, will gain skills and have an amazing day in the sun and surf… we guarantee it!" Ventnor's Randazzo Surf School also offers "Level 2" instruction, designed for surfers that have the basics but are ready to sharpen their skills and form. "We meet the stu-

dents where they are and help them to get to the next level, " said Randazzo. The Ventnor Recreation Department typically offers Downbeach Surf Camp, a beginner surf camp for children ages 7 and up. However it has been canceled this year due to the Coronavirus. Randazzo notes that he is in no way trying to compete with their program, but rather hopes to enhance the recreational opportunities for families in Ventnor.

Randazzo Surf School's first location, in North Wildwood, opened 2015 and has proved to be very successful. Designed by Dean Randazzo, the surf program focuses on safety, skills, balance, education, recreation, etiquette and fun! "Surfing is my passion. I have been teaching at all levels, from beginner to pro for 18 years and I love seeing that smile when they succeed." shared Randazzo. " We are excited to open another location in Ventnor and to work with the City Recreation Department. Ventnor is becoming a cool and happening beach for families, offering a lot of recreational opportunities." Randazzo, nicknamed the "Jersey Devil" is the most accomplished surfer on the East Coast. He grew up and caught his first waves in Margate. Dean Randazzo became a professional surfer in 1990 and was 1 of 44 surfers to qualify for the World Championship Tour in 1996. He is still to this day the only surfer from the State of New Jersey to make the World Tour, doing it all without a sponsorship. Dean’s experience, patience and skills to teach will help to guarantee progression. For more information or availability go to email randazzosurfventnor@ gmail.com or call 732-825-7873

Grateful Dead Tribute Band Sings "We Will Get By" By Karen DeWalt

A

fter months of no concerts due to Covid-19 restrictions, live music returned to the South Jersey shore, thanks to Charlie Wigo IV and his band, The Dead Reckoning. Deadheads from as far away as Delaware and upstate Pennsylvania made the long strange trip to The Pitney Pub in Galloway, to enjoy the tunes made famous by The Grateful Dead and other classic rock artists. Missy Rowland, of Bethlehem, PA drove 3 hours to enjoy live music and time with her "Philly Dead Tribe." John Martin, an assistant professor of political science and philosophy from the University of Delaware, made the journey to reunite with his friends that he missed from previous shows. Featuring Mark Diomede (lead guitar and vocals), Bruce Wigidor (bass and vocals), Joe Skladanek (keys and vocals), Kenny Q (drums), and Cosmic Charlie himself (guitar and vocals), the band treated the fans to a socially distanced outside show, encouraging

attendees to mask up and get down. When the first notes of Feel Like a Stranger flowed through the humid air, everyone got up and danced, spun and hooped to the beat of the familiar Dead opener. The audience received a treat during C.C. Rider, a song not currently in Bob Weir's current project Dead and Company repertoire, with special guest Bob Roader stepping on stage to play harmonica, giving the fans a taste of the late Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, a former keyboard and harmonica player and founding member of the Grateful Dead. After a set break, the band came back with a bang, opening with Eyes of the World with strains of Somewhere Over the Rainbow weaved through jam. The crowd truly came alive as the opening chords of Terrapin Station blanketed the crowd as they danced under a brand new crescent moon. The rocking vibe con-

tinued through the rest of the night, ending with And We Bid You Goodnight, a folk standard from the 1960’s first penned by Joseph Stecher and his family, the Pindar family. The sense of community and spirituality was evident as fans showed up and greeted old friends, many not seeing each other since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic thanks to “Cosmic” Charlie and The Dead Reckoning band.

few years ago, I met Anthony Amos, the founder of HydroDog. After finding success with his company in Australia, he and his family moved to the states from Australia and began embarking on a nationwide ‘Bathe to Save’ tour, traveling to animal shelters across the United States. At each stop along the tour, Anthony’s children, Austin, Aria and Isabella, bathe shelter dogs and local pets for a small cost, with all of the proceeds benefiting local animal shelters. His mission is to spread a positive message about adopting from pet shelters. In an interview from 2018, Amos said his goal is to reduce the number of animals euthanized and help shelter dogs get ready for adoption. “We wanted to share a different message that getting a rescue can be exciting not just for the dog, but for

Nutritious Hydration By Nancy Adler

U

gggh! Drinking water is so boring! When even adding flavors to water can’t convince you to chug the recommended amount of H2O you may be able to snack on some of your fluids instead. Say what now? The appropriate serving of fruit can actually hydrate your body almost twice as effectively as just water alone because the sugar and vitamins in the fruit helps with absorption.

That said, I would never advocate replacing all your water intake with fruit because of the sugar. Too much fruit can make you super gassy, bloated, or constipated. Point definitely taken. (cap intake at two servings a day.) It’s no surprise that watermelon comes out on top (or in this case, the bottom—which is a good thing!). Biting into a thick slice, it’s hard to keep the water from dripping down your face. If you count tomatoes, they’re actually more hydrating than watermelon.. Cantaloupe and strawberries also rank high on the hydration scale. Sliding in right under those top fruits are papaya, peach, tangerines, oranges, lemon, lime, pineapple, orange, apricots, blueberries, and plums— quite a list. Also surprisingly is cranberries .When eaten fresh, those little guys are juicer than they might look! Apples, pears, mangos, grapes, guava, kiwi all slide in next, with a water content of between 80 and 84 percent, while bananas and avocado land near the top of the pyramid. (It just might be the one time when avocados don’t come in first in a nutritional ranking.) At the tip top of my list is dried fruit—the least hydrating of all. With dried fruit, the water has been removed so the sugar is more concentrated, a double whammy. The best part about the hydrating fruit pyramid is that so much of the delicious juicy winners are in season right now. Having 1 1/4 cup of fruit in place of water can be a great way to hydrate . Be sure to cap it off at

two servings a day to avoid annoying digestive issues. Sunshine, summer, and a bowl of watermelon? All that’s missing is a golden retriever in a patriotic bandana to complete this idyllic picture. Cucumbers are another healthy and hydrating food to include in your diet. They are made up almost entirely of water and also provide a small amount of some nutrients, such as vitamin K, potassium and magnesium. Compared to other water-rich vegetables, cucumbers are one of the lowest in calories. There are only 8 calories in a half-cup (52-gram) serving, and their water content makes them very refreshing . Lettuce has several health-promoting properties. One cup of lettuce provides more than a quarter cup of water, in addition to 1 gram of fiber. It also provides 5% of your daily needs for folate .Folate is important for pregnant women, as it can help prevent neural tube birth defects. Additionally, lettuce is high in vitamins K and A, both of which have been studied for their roles in keeping your bones and immune system healthy. Bone broths and soups are usually water-based and have the potential to be very hydrating and nutritious. For example, 1 cup of chicken broth is made almost entirely of water, which

contributes a decent amount to your daily hydration needs. Consuming water-rich foods like broths and soups regularly may also promote weight loss due to their low calorie content. Those who consume soup before the main course of a meal eat fewer calories and therefore end up with a lower daily calorie intake.

1121 TILTON ROAD, NORTHFIELD (609)646-2486

It has been said that people who ate two servings of low-calorie soups per day ended up losing 50% more weight than those who consumed the same number of calories from snack foods. You can significantly increase the nutrition content of broths and soups by adding lots of vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes.

health during this stressful time. The COVID-19 situation is always evolving and no one knows for sure when things will be back to “normal”. When we get to the other side of this, we may have a new “normal." For almost three months every area around the world has been under some sort of lock down. Businesses were forced to close, people were ordered to stay home, and parks and outdoor areas were closed. All of that was being done to slow down the spread of the virus and to “flatten the curve." proximately mid June, things started to ease up but we still have a lot of restrictions in place. We’ve already established how exercise is a great stress reliever and provides positive results both physically and mentally. As we are living in very stressful times exercise is more important than ever. With many restrictions in place, it can be difficult to exercise, especially if you do not have space in your home. One restriction that will likely take a while to bring back is the use of indoor gym facilities. It seems as if it will be last on the list. As of now, gyms are allowed for personal training use only. Even when gyms are “allowed” to be open, the public may be hesitant to start going back. To each his own. Exercise centers and gym facilities are typically very busy spaces, with an easy transfer of germs. Gyms are considered a real Petri dish. With restrictions being lifted on outdoor areas, beaches and parks, exercising outdoors may become the new normal! Typically, yoga classes have always been held on the beach in the summer in our area. There is nothing more peaceful than listening to the waves crashing

while practicing yoga and who can resist jumping in the ocean after a

hot, sweaty exercise session? Outdoor areas also have several benefits to limiting the spread of Covid-19, when compared to indoor areas. Outdoor areas have a greater space for airflow and those nasty airborne virus particles have a quicker way to disperse when compared to an enclosed environment. Outdoor exercise areas typically allow for “social distancing” when compared to cramped indoor exercise environments. If you are in a large area such as a park or beach it’s easy to space everyone 6 feet apart. I particularly like the idea of body weight exercises and then no equipment is required. Outdoor exercise areas deliver important UV light that can reduce and kill viruses. Wind also helps disperse virus particles. In our area we have parks and nature trails that provide many outdoor exercise opportunities, running, biking or walking. This is fantastic for us in our current season of summer and won’t be bad even come fall, but what will we do when it’s so cold that it’s not as appealing to workout outside? I guess, we have time to see how this progresses and unfolds. We can always fall back on our Zoom or You Tube workouts. As a personal trainer and class instructor, I find it much more valuable to be in person with my clients and students because of form. Form over everything. This is particularly tough when you are live streaming. I’m just not a fan of it. Then there is the whole social aspect of it. I love the people

that I workout with or train. We bond and usually have a great time together. I look forward to being with them, it’s an extended family. Have you ever attended a pop-up workout? Pop up workout classes are becoming more and more popular these days, especially in the warmer months. We can totally take advantage of our warm weather months by popping into one of these types of classes. They are literally everywhere. Nothing like good old Google to find what you are looking for in your particular area. Pop up workouts started in New York City. Being a spin instructor, outdoor spin classes on the Hudson River are on my bucket list. I guess there is no time like the present, because I miss teaching my indoor cycling classes. Being on the water is also an ideal workout location with paddle boarding and kayaking so popular these days. They are great upper body and core workouts. July happens to be the hottest month for us, so I would be very

careful choosing what time of day to exercise. Exercising during the early hours of dawn or dusk when the sun is going down would be ideal. Make sure you are hydrated and take tiny sips of water throughout your workout. Heat exhaustion is nothing to play around with. I schedule my outdoor workouts early morning or later in the evening for this very reason. Just know your body and if you’re feeling ill, take a break and find shade. Do not push yourself because you will do more

Slowing the “Summer Slide”

By Karen DeWalt

S

Where It's All Good

Where It's All Good

ummer is normally a time for rest, relaxation, and vacations, but this year is far from normal. Most, if not all, of the children in the South Jersey area have been homeschooled since March because of the novel coronavirus. This year, more than ever, parents should be continuing some form of education for their children. As of this writing, there are no clear plans for schools to reopen in September, at least in the traditional sense. Luckily, the internet is here to help parents slow down the “summer slide,” as there are many activities you can do with your kids that are both fun and educational. Outside experiments, journal keeping, summer reading, and crafts for all subjects are sure to keep your child engaged and learning at the same time. For summer reading, either ask

their teacher for what they recommend or check out summer reading lists by grade level. Instead of picking a book for your student, ask them to pick from a list that they would like to read. They feel they have a choice in what they are reading and are more likely to stay interested. Read the book along with your child, and ask them questions about what they read. Asking your child to keep a journal will give you insight into how they are feeling, especially during this pandemic. A Google search can give you lots of ideas that you can cater to your child’s grade or skill level. School supplies are now on sale at major stores. Take your child along while you’re shopping and let them pick out their own supplies. If possible, contact your child’s next grade teacher and ask them

about what they will be studying for the upcoming school year. Pinterest has loads of ideas and freebies to enrich summer learning. If this is not possible, ask your child what they are interested in, such as the beach or the Civil War, and research some crafts and worksheets to do at home. Most elementary level science experiments are easily done using common household items. If they are old enough, teach them to make simple recipes. They would be using math skills and cooking in itself is a science experiment! Keep them active as much as possible while maintaining social distancing. Parks and trails are currently open, which offer exercise opportunities and you can do additional activities such as a scavenger hunt or identify native flora and fauna. Remember to maintain social distancing in all you do and have fun!

ooray! Sports are back! Or are they? Since I last wrote, the Phillies have released their 60-game schedule and they are already in “summer camp” getting ready for the actual games. The NHL has picked those two “hub” cities and is moving forward with a plan for playoff hockey. The Sixers and the NBA are about to head to Orlando to get ready to resume that season. The Eagles have sent an interesting letter out to their season ticket holders. And while we’re on the Eagles, one of their stars gets himself in hot water on social media. In local sports, “The Last Dance” is right around the corner, and the ACBL is back. From the entertainment world, I finally checked off a big one on my Netflix list. I’ve also rediscovered a network TV favorite from 2001 to 2006 that I can now introduce my girlfriend’s son to thanks to the beauty of Amazon Prime. And have any of you tried PEACOCK yet? As always

22

though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● Can I start by saying how happy I am to begin with baseball? The Phillies have released what their 60-game schedule looks like. There have been a few health concerns during this period of “summer camp", but it does appear that they’ll get a short season in with playoffs and a World Series. ● As of this writing, Scott Kingery, Tommy Hunter & Mikie Mahtook have all tested positive for COVID-19. Three Phillies coaches are reportedly positive as well. Aaron Nola’s absence was because someone in his circle came down positive, but he’s back and says he hopes to be the opening day starter. If there is baseball in 2020, and that’s still a big “IF," it’s going to look radically different than we’ve ever seen it. ● Ever since Major League Baseball announced its plan for a 60-game season, the Phillies knew they would face only teams from the National League East and American League East to minimize travel in a pandemic. The schedule includes 10 games against each NL East team (Atlanta, Washington,

New York Mets & Miami). The Phillies will face the Toronto Blue Jays six times, the Yankees and Boston Red Sox four times apiece, and the Rays and Baltimore Orioles only three times. The Phillies won’t travel to Baltimore; the Rays won’t visit Citizens Bank Park. If everything proceeds as planned, you’ll have Phillies baseball starting on July 24th. This is a THRILL for me as hey, it’s July for gosh sakes. Summer and baseball go hand in hand! I’m okay with no fans. Just give me some LIVE action! As stoked as I am for baseball, I’m probably MORE excited to see

some playoff hockey! The NHL and the NHL Players' Association have reached a tentative agreement on a return-to-play plan to restart the 2019-20 season and a memorandum of understanding that adds another four years to the term of the current collective bargaining agreement. Up next is Phase 3, which includes the opening of training camps on July 13th in individual cities, as well as traveling to hub cities on July 26 for additional training and exhibition games. According to the reported plan, Eastern Conference teams will play in Toronto and Western Conference teams in

JULY 9, 2020

Edmonton. The conference finals and Stanley Cup Final will be held in Edmonton. I think that’s GREAT! But when will they actually “drop the puck?" It’s looking like August 1st is a date that we might be able to watch some Flyers hockey once again. One more Flyers item and that’s Oskar Lindblom. Last Thursday, he got to “ring the bell” to signify the end of his chemotherapy at Penn’s Abramson Cancer Center. In a calendar year that’s had such bad news, this was, as Bernie Parent likes to say, a “beautiful thing!" The Flyers forward, whose season was interrupted in December with the stunning diagnosis of Ewing’s sarcoma, walked out of the hospital amid cheers from the medical staff. Lindblom won’t be a part of the restart for hockey, but he has taken the ice at the Flyers practice facility in Voorhees and it’s just a GREAT story for a young Flyers star. So, the Flyers and the NHL are going to resume in Canada. Um, good luck to the NBA which is trying to move ahead with plans to resume the season in Orlando. Cases of COVID-19 are blowing

up in Florida right now. The Sixers have taken off for the Sunshine State, but even NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is worried that more positive tests could pop a hole in the NBA “bubble." Teams are gathering at the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando, and once they are situated, all personnel are tested and must quarantine for at least two days. However, as of this writing, Florida's Department of Health reported 7,347 additional positive cases. The state's total as of this writing was at 213,794. And, several teams, including the Brooklyn Nets, Denver Nuggets, LA Clippers, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings, have closed their practice facilities in the past week due to positive

coronavirus cases among their respective travel groups. Oh yeah, the NBA returning is FAR from a done deal! In the NFL, the Redskins might FINALLY be changing their name after lead sponsor FedEx basically demanded it. The team put out a statement that essentially said they would have some discussions about it, which is a huge move from owner Daniel Snyder’s previous stance. I like Washington Americans or Generals, or anything military related. The Eagles have sent an email to their season ticket holders that they can DEFER their season tickets for 2020 and not lose their spot in line, so to speak. According to the email sent to all season ticket holders, “We have been discussing and will continue to plan for all possible scenarios, but in order to facilitate new policies and safety measures, we are anticipating certain seating areas to be unavailable. As many teams have also communicated in recent weeks, there is a chance we will have to significantly reduce the stadium’s seating capacity. They go on to write, “We understand that, even with safety measures in place, you may have concerns

about attending games in person. As such, we would like to offer you the option to defer your Season Tickets for the 2020 season. If you choose this option, we will pause your account for 2020 and resume your account in 2021 with the same seat locations you would have had in 2020. If applicable, your personal seat license and any other ticket or club seat license agreement will remain in effect and you will resume season ticket purchases in 2021.â€? For the first time in my life, I think I’m going to exclaim “Way to go EAGLES‌!â€? And it has nothing to do with something on the field. Which brings me to Desean Jackson. In an off-the-field controversy, D-Jax is in hot water after posting something on his Instagram in which he praised Louis Farrakhan and shared a text that included a fake Adolf Hitler quote. Jackson has since apologized, and the Eagles statement about Jackson’s views saying “they have no place in our society and are not condoned or supported in any way by the organization.â€? The Eagles statement indicated the team will take further action -- perhaps a fine --

I’ll also be keeping a close eye on how the Eagles handle this. Just catch the football Desean! Stay off social media! . To close things out on the Eagles, here are some dates you need to know. The Eagles coaches will report around July 10th and will quarantine. Rookies, select vets & QB’s will report on July 22nd. The team will use both the NovaCare Complex and Lincoln Financial Field as it complies with pandemic protocols for training camp. Two golf items as I’ll start with the bulked up Bryson DeChambeau winning the Rocket Mortgage event in Detroit. DeChambeau has always been a bit of an eccentric, tinkering with equipment, angles & math, but now he has results as he had six top-10 finishes in a row and now a WIN. While most of us got FATTER during the pandemic, Bryson bulked up by working out & eating a lot of protein. Tuning in for his drives at Detroit Country Club was “must-see TV. Congrats

â—?

Bryson and I am now curious if others will follow your formula. My other golf item is that Jack’s tournament will now be played without fans. The Memorial, in Ohio, will now go without fans. The tournament hosted by golf legend Jack Nicklaus was to be the first of the PGA Tour's events in the reconfigured schedule to allow a minimum number of spectators. The plan was to allow up to 8,000 fans per day with social distancing measures in place, with no bleachers or grandstands. That’s now off the table, but I’m sure the players will still be enjoying the world famous milkshakes that the tourney is known for at Muirfield Village Golf Club. In local sports, don’t forget about the Last Dance Tournament for baseball that will start with poolplay July 14-16. About 60 sites statewide will be used based on location, placing teams into 32 regions. Most regions will have two groups of four teams. After three pool play games, the top two from each will then play for the regional championship. Locally, Vineland, Ocean City, Holy Spirit, Egg Harbor Township, Cedar Creek, ACIT, Millville, Mainland and Buena will all take part in the action. The 32 regional champions will advance to the single-elimination rounds on July 21-29. There will then be two brackets (North & South Jersey) with 16 teams each. The North and South winners will play for the state title July 30th. This is a GREAT idea to get the local baseball players “one last chance, even if they are not allowed to wear school-issued

and outlined what the team feels Jackson needs to do to atone: “... not only apologizing, but using his platform to take action to promote unity, equality and respect. I’m going to chalk this up in the “knucklehead category that our New Jersey governor likes to reference all the time, but in the end,

uniforms or use raised money for transportation and shirts. Ocean City is supposed to host one of the regions and tournament organizers called it one of the “best in the state”. I sure hope to be there! As usual, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as I finally was able to sit down and make it through “The Irishman”. I’m a sucker for anything Martin Scorsese does, and even though the film runs 3 hours and 29 minutes, the chance to see Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino in a movie with ties to organized crime was a MUST WATCH for me? Is it worth the watch? It was pretty cool to see how they used an aging-reverse process to make the three principle characters younger & older. I absolutely LOVED seeing modern day celebrities like Ray Romano and Bobby Cannavale in there. I think my favorite person might’ve been Welker White, who played the babysitter Lois in “Goodfellas” and portrays Jimmy Hoffa’s wife in this movie. DeNiro plays Frank “The Irishman” Sheeran. Pesci is mob-connected Russell Buffalino. Pacino plays Jimmy Hoffa. My advice? Start it, if you have to take a break, resume it and it won’t lose any of the steam. On TV, I was amused and THRILLED that my girlfriend’s son, Michael wanted to check out ALIAS on Amazon Prime. He loves Jennifer Garner, and I got to watch the show as it aired from 2001 to 2006. Man oh man, that’s Jennifer Garner at her prime though! Who could forget the post-Super Bowl episode? Lastly, I’m going to check out something called “Tough as Nails” on CBS that debuts on July 8th.

It’s hosted by Phil Keoghan from “The Amazing Race”, but it’s a reality show competition about people who hang drywall, sheetrock, weld, etc. I think the combination of Phil and the fact that these people are WORKING, will make it a fun watch.

As always, please stay safe & healthy as we now have our peak population swell with the summer residents here too. I think I’m going to keep this in every column too, as I remind you to please try and be KIND! Nothing bad ever happened to someone who led with kindness, right? “Talk” to you next week. Pete has been the local "sports guy" at the Jersey Shore since 2004. Books to Beat the Summer Heat: Your 2020 Summer Reading List

S

ometimes social media just doesn’t do it. We live in an increasingly polarized world, overflowing with fear and desperate grabs for control. It’s summer, shouldn’t life be good? Just like what the T-shirt says, right? Practice some escapism and dive into a compelling book this summer. Here are my recommendations:

1. Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat Unlike most cook books, you’ll want to read this book cover-to-cover. Nosrat crafts a witty narrative and incorporates lessons on cooking. She breaks down the key elements of every recipe and why they are important. For example, she walks the reader through the focaccia bread recipe to illustrate why olive oil is so important. Little drawings add detailed explanations for every

food and technique. If you want to learn something new this summer, I recommend giving this book a try. 2. A Little Life by Hanya Yanigahara I’ll admit, this book is long (clocking in at almost 900 pages), but it is beautiful. Nominated for a National Book Award, depth and style flow off every page. The story follows four college roommates throughout the rest of their lives until their eventual deaths. Yanagihara explores the nature of love, sacrifice, trauma and art throughout. This book will make you cry. And smile. Then cry some more. I keep it on my bookshelf for my moodier moments. 3. Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson This book is incredibly educational. Stevenson writes autobiographically on his experiences as a lawyer representing inmates on death row in Alabama. He addresses pain-staking flaws in the criminal justice system, including sentencing children to death and imprisoning people with mental incapacities for life sentences. Stevenson writes beautifully on the

nature of justice, claiming that everyone deserves justice, especially the poor, and everyone deserves a certain level of “unmerited grace.” It’s a challenging read, but if you want to learn more about the protests taking place across the country, this book is for you. 4. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens Simply, this book is perfect for beach lovers. The story centers on a young girl who grew up abandoned in the marshes of North Carolina. She is fascinated with the nature and wildlife at her fingertips, forcing the reader to fall in love with seagulls, shellfish and seagrass. This book is excellent for mystery lovers and romance readers, and is soft enough for a beach trip. Expect to be surprised and ponder the nature of culpability, loyalty and place. Books represent such an important part of our lives. Reading elicits so many benefits: increased vocabulary, increased memory, increased writing skills. And nothing feels better than sitting on the beach, waves kissing your toes, cold drink beside you, entrenched in a story. It’s truly, inevitably beautiful.

Dining Out Means Outside More restaurants offering outdoor dining

Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

L

ast week, Governor Murphy made an announcement that retracted plans to open indoor dining in the state. Indoor dining with reduced capacity was set to begin on July 2; however, now it will not return for an indefinite period. His decision came after seeing how the return of indoor dining has impacted other states, and after seeing the surge in cases as a response, it was deemed not worth the risk. This came as huge blow to many restaurants and cafes that do not have outdoor dining facilities. Especially hit hard by this announcement were the businesses based on the boardwalk, with the Ocean City Boardwalk Association claiming their window for revenue has been slammed shut. Many people were also

looking forward to finally being able to go to their favorite establishments to enjoy a meal on-site. It seemed as though there was an overall feeling of deflation. However, many of your favorite restaurants are still providing take-out service as well as outdoor dining and it is more important than ever to support local businesses where you can. Due to the recent restrictions, many restaurants are investing in their outdoor dining spaces to make them accessible despite any adverse conditions. These include updating their décor, furniture, and providing a tent or covering. Most of these establishments have gone for months without a steady stream of customers. Some have had to change their entire business model to cater for the new normal, and some unfortunately have had to shut temporarily, or even permanently. That is why it is important to support our local businesses to ensure that once this all over, we have given the local economy the best possible chance of recovering.

For those of you on Facebook, a great page to be following is the “South Jersey Outdoor Dining” group. Each day, local restaurants and cafes post their opening hours and specials, and a master list of live entertainment and restaurants is shared. They even indicate which restaurants are dog friendly. This is a great resource for anyone trying to decide where to grab a bite as it has all the information you need in one place. One of my top picks for outdoor dining is Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall (133 S Tennessee Ave, Atlantic

City). These guys were ahead of the game with outdoor dining since before Coronavirus even began. They serve up some delicious food including sandwiches, wings, and burgers, and the coldest craft beer in town. They have a great outdoor space with socially distanced seating and umbrellas. You will have to go early though as they are not taking reservations and seats fill up fast. One you get down there you will understand why. They have been able to maintain a great atmosphere while adhering to all the government’s guidelines.

Another one of my favorite restaurants that I was excited to see opening their outdoor space was Ryfe (4101 Atlantic Ave, Atlantic City). This dog friendly restaurant serves up delicious burgers, tacos, and even have vegan options. However, their specialty has got to be seafood as they serve up a diverse range of options including homemade crab bisque, scallops Florentine, and a 10 oz grilled lobster tail. They have a selection of kid’s items making this a good stop for the family, including homemade milkshakes. Although not required, reservations are recommended, and they tend to book up fast due to their phenomenal reputation. So, make a reservation and see what the hype is all about. For something right on the boardwalk, Harry’s Oyster Bar and Seafood (Bally’s Atlantic City, Ground Floor. Park Place & the Boardwalk, Atlantic City) is an AC classic. Their outdoor dining is situated on the iconic AC Boardwalk, so it would be a crime if these guys didn’t open. They describe themselves as “the perfect fusion of oyster bar, sports bar and seafood house serving up the ocean’s freshest fare.” Their location makes them incredibly easy to get to as you can walk off what you just ate by taking a leisurely cruise down the boardwalk afterwards. They also have another location, Dock’s (2405 Atlantic Ave), which is perfect for something more upscale. Dock’s is a great option for date night or birthdays. Why should you let these restrictions get in the way? With great service and some of the best oysters you will taste in your life, Dock’s is a great option for those looking to celebrate something special. With casinos recently re-opening, now is a great time to take advantage of some of the great dining options in Hard Rock. Its boardwalk location means there are several places open with outdoor facilities including the Hardrock Café with their great selection of breakfasts, burgers, sandwiches, and wings. For the kids, the Sugar Factory are opening their outdoor patio to serve up some of their crazy burgers and shakes. For something more low key, the beach bar and balcony bar will both be open so you can really take in that AC boardwalk breeze that you’ve missed so much. Importantly, just because outdoor dining is available does not mean everything has gone back to normal. You will still be required to social distance meaning it is not recommended to get into party mode just yet. The ease in restrictions are to allow people to step outside of their home to enjoy a meal and support local businesses. All waiters must wear masks and to help with social distancing, tables will be

at least 6ft apart so you might find it a little emptier than usual (but hey, at least you will get your food quicker!). Additionally, group sizes can be no more than eight. So, although this may seem like a setback for the state, there are still plenty of ways to get your dining out fix. We can still enjoy our favorite restaurants but just outdoors for now. In fact, they need us to enjoy and support them now more than ever. Dina Guzzardo is the President and Executive Promoter of Dina Media Group LLC. Safety On The Water Raising A Mindful Generation

By Karina Sanchez and Bailey Hurst

A

rthur Ashe once said, “One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation”. As a member of a generation whose preparation is found the night before an exam and confidence is located behind screens it’s clear this quote needs to be addressed. The one true event we’ve all seen: countless teens prepare for their drivers test. Everyone completes a mandatory written exam before being seated behind the wheel. But the preparation doesn’t stop there. All students of the drivers Ed program are required to complete six hours of driving with an instructor before being awarded with their drivers permit. This preparation leads to the confidence needed to pass the drivers test and to safely navigate the roads. This confidence and preparation is nowhere to be found while taking the boating exam. Most teens see our back bays as a summer playground, a place to forget about road signs and traffic laws, a place to just sit back and enjoy summer festivities. This carefree mindset can be detrimental to the boating com-

munity and the next generation of captains and sailors. Between having fun and checking local conditions, not many people remember the one most important skill when you’re in or around the water: the ability to think safely. The ability to think safely comes from the development of good judgment. It’s needless to say that the first mandatory aspect of water safety is the aptitude of swimming. Kids should be introduced to swimming as early as their first contact with the water. Once a child develops muscle memory and feels safe handling the different situations on the water, it’s time to understand the basics of water safety. There are not many things to remember but they should absolutely be part of their subconscious thought: 1. Life Jackets are a MUST. Set the example. Always carry and wear life jackets on any type of vesselor board. Life jackets nowadays are inexpensive, comfortable and they will helpprevent drowning.

When You Need

The Best

Emergency Care

2. Always watch out for your buddy. Having a buddy will always be a safety precaution to any water activity. Whether you are swimming, diving, sailing, canoeing or just relaxing by the pool, always have someonewith you and always let someone know of your plans. Buddies stay together, monitor each other, and alert if either needs assistance or is missing. 3. Communication is key. Kids need to learn the importance of communicating when they need help. The ability to communicate effectively onthe water is vital to continued safety and enjoyment. Always carry at least TWO reliable forms of communication. Marine radios, cellphones and visual distress signals are a few different types of communication you’ll want to have on board 4. For the hundredth time: wear sunscreen and stay hydrated! It doesn’t matter if it’s sunny, rainy or cloudy out. Make sure drinking water

and applying sunscreen is a habit within your family and children. 5. Take care of your equipment and your equipment will take care of you. Just like getting the oil changed or replacing the tires of a car, taking care of your boats and boards will make your time in the water safer and more enjoyable. 6. Checklists are simple and useful tools for any activity on the water. Browse for a few references and customize your personal checklist based on your family profile and equipment. Kids and teens should go through them in every occasion possible in order to learn with repetition. Everyone is looking forward to a nice, relaxed summer here at the shore. Let us not forget the importance of keeping our family and friends safe and informed about what is acceptable and what behaviors should be avoided when in and around the water. We must continue to raise a safe and informed generation. As Summer 2020 kicks off, remember the few simple things that will help make your time on the water safe and enjoyable for all.

This is a story of shame, embarrassment, humility and a bit of adulting. By Erica Hoffman

“A

nnie,” the hit Broadway show included the song, “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile.” There are so many “smile” euphemisms. “A smile is a friend maker,” “Use your smile to repair the world.” “Smiling strengthens your immune system.” We could fill pages with sayings. But what if you don’t like your smile or don’t even have a smile? What then? I have had dental issues for as long as I can remember. As I got older, my teeth got worse and I smiled less. It got to a point where I was embarrassed to open my mouth at all, let alone go to a dentist. A couple years ago I finally mustered up the courage to do the adult

thing. With an unhealthy level of trepidation, I did everything I was supposed to do. I found a dentist who took my insurance, I called and got an appointment, actually remembered my appointment and shockingly, even kept it. These may all seem like small wins, but for someone (AKA Me) who has crippling anxiety about – well, about almost everything, I learned a long time ago I have to count the little wins as well as the big victories or else, what’s the point? On the way to the appointment that I dreaded for too many years; the logical side of my brain was fighting with the 12-year old scared side of my brain. They fought the whole way there. The logical side was saying, “You’re going to see a dentist AND dentists don’t judge.” The 12-year old side of me wanted to turn the car around because the thought of opening my mouth to show anyone, even a dentist made me want to run. Good thing the 12-year old me didn’t know how to drive. I got into the dentist chair, I prepared myself for the physical and

emotional pain I deserved. It was time to meet this human that fueled my anxiety. In comes the dentist. A nice enough guy. I started to relax a bit. Then he said, “Open wide.” He took a beat then – wait for it. He said out loud, as if I wasn’t even there, “Wow, well this is not good.” I would have said, “Thanks, doc, I know.” Had he not had every finger he has in my mouth. Surprise! I never went back to that guy who scrunched up his face. I pretended the problem didn’t exist for years. In time I knew I had to either learn to live with closed lips, pretend the problem away, or just deal with the

pain and embarrassment. It took some time, but I am “adulting.” And it feels great. I have a new dentist now. One who doesn’t judge and scrunch up his face. He didn’t shame me or dismiss my issues. He said, “I see the problem. Let’s fix it.” I did a happy dance right in the chair! He told me to stop moving. In the not too distant future, I’ll never get dressed without my smile. Thank goodness we’re living in a world of masked faces. What have I learned from this? We look back and see all the time we wasted worrying and figuring out what to do, but when we finally do what we’ve always been afraid to do, we wonder why we didn’t do it earlier. And the anxiety just kind of goes away… Erica Hoffman was born in Atlantic City and is proud to be writing for Shore Local. She lives in South Jersey and enjoys finding and sharing the lighter side of life.

Good Taste begins with Fresh Herbs Pesto

Is there anything better than homemade pesto with fresh basil? Add it to bread along with fresh mozzarella and tomatoes from the farmers market for a perfect caprese sandwich.

Drinks Vegging at the Shore By Marci Lutsky

I

t’s usually around this point in the summer when I start receiving messages from friends and neighbors asking if I want some of the vegetables and herbs they have grown. They always ask me because they know I will say yes. Do you feel like the herbs in your garden are growing faster than you can use them? If so, here are some suggestions to help you use that bounty.

Have you ever tried infused water? Yes, it’s a thing and it’s so refreshing in summer. Add mint and cucumber to ice water. It’s perfect for hot days. If you want to make some grownup cocktails, nothing beats fresh mint in mojitos.

Garnishes

Fresh herbs can make a dish pop with flavor. Sometimes I think I’m in the minority for my love of cilantro, but in my opinion, it’s one of the best ways to add flavor to enchiladas, rice or fajitas. Parsley is another herb that I use frequently. One of my favorite vegetarian dishes is tofu piccata. When I add chopped fresh parsley, it makes the whole dish come together.

Marinades

Whether you are grilling fish, meat, tofu or vegetables, herbs are perfect in marinades mixed with olive oil. My favorites in marinades are rosemary, thyme and oregano.

Tofu piccata plates are tasty, healthy and easy to make.

Summer is a great time to nibble on yummy roasted vegetable enchiladas

Salad Dressings

There is no need to use store bought dressing when you have herbs at your fingertips. Add a handful of herbs to olive oil and Dijon mustard. Fresh tarragon is my go-to herb for salad dressing. For creamy dressings, I love using dill.

If you can’t keep up with your herbs, drying and freezing them is a great way to enjoy them all winter. Tie some string around a bunch of herbs and hang them upside down until they have dried. You will be thankful for those dried herbs in January when you make a big pot of soup. Embrace those fresh herbs and start cooking! What are your favorite ways to enjoy fresh herbs? I would love to hear from you. Marci Lutsky is a food blogger at Vegging at the Shore, www. veggingattheshore.com and can be reached at veggingattheshore@ gmail.com.

Somers Point Rotary Launches Safety Program

T

he Rotary Club of Somers Point has long supported the community through a range of service projects. This year, Somers Point Rotary is teaming up with the local first responders regarding a child passenger safety awareness program known as W.H.A.L.E. (We Have A Little Emergency). The W.H.A.L.E. program is an identification and information package for child car safety seats. The program was created by Connie Day, a caregiver from Richmond, VA and is now a national program. The W.H.A.L.E. kit includes four self-adhesive stickers and one informational label. The stickers are placed on the child safety seats and can be referenced in the event of a motor vehicle accident. This program provides valuable information to first

responders in the event children become separated from their parents or guardians following an accident. W.H.A.L.E. kits are available through the Rotary Club of Somers Point. For more information, contact Dave Blyler at 609-432-5347 or in person at The Doc's Place, 646 Bay Avenue, Somers Point, NJ 08244.

Tie Dye - Fun for Adults and Kids By Karen DeWalt

T

he art of tie dyeing has been a part of American culture since the 1960’s, most commonly associated with the hippie counter culture, but this year has seen an increase in sales of tie dye kits. Since March of this year, people have been quarantined due to Covid 19 restrictions and needed something to creatively pass the time. Usually a popular summer camp activity, tie dyeing has gone mainstream and is featured in many current fashion trends you can buy at stores. But it is definitely more fun to do at home and customize the colors that you prefer. The most popular designs are done on white or light colored clothing but recently reverse tie dyeing using black or darker colors, bleach and bright colors and ice dying are becoming more popular. Almost anything can be tie dyed from shoes, shirts, socks, pants and even cotton masks, which are now required by law in the state of New Jersey to enter business establishments.

JULY 9, 2020

Getting started is very simple! Find some clothing you would like to dye then buy a tie dye kit. They normally include everything you will need including the dye, gloves and rubber bands. Complete kits can be purchased at any craft store or online. For different patterns and swirls, Pinterest and YouTube are the best resources. Use a disposable plastic tablecloth because the dye is permanent! Also, wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dyed. After you make your twists and ties, use an old baking rack and cookie sheet to dye your clothing on. For best results and easier tying, run the clothing through the washing machine but do not dry.

Working the clothing when it is damp. After you dye your project, place in a gallon storage bag and for best results, let it sit for at least 24 hours. The longer it sits, the brighter the colors will be. When you are ready to untie, wear gloves, then cut rubber bands off, unravel, and rinse thoroughly with cold water. Part of the fun is seeing how your creations turn out! It may be totally different than you envisioned,

but that’s okay. Tie dyeing is all about experimenting and having fun. When the dye rinses clear, wash separately in the washing machine using normal settings. It is ok to wash with other tie dye projects, just don’t mix with your regular clothes until they washed by themselves at least once. Wear your tie dyes proudly, and don’t be surprised if people stop you and ask where you purchased your stylish clothes from and you can proudly say, "I made it myself!"

Downtown Wildwood’s Events and Attractions Expected to Draw Visitors from All Over the Tri-State Area This Summer

Going places with Dina Guzzardo

D

owntown Wildwood is THE place to visit this summer. The downtown area is enjoying quite a renaissance and is perfect for anyone looking for a one-stop destination with live entertainment, one of a kind shopping, great eats, and even daily fitness classes this summer. Downtown Wildwood used to be the hustling and bustling center of nightlife many years ago; however, as people became more mobile, it went from being the “it” place to being just another stop over. Former Mayor, Ernie Troiano Jr. said, “We were called the little Las Vegas of the east coast and that equated to many dollars being spent in the area and tax revenue for the state.” Unfortunately, as more people had access to cars, they started to venture elsewhere. The appeal of the big cities was drawing people away from areas like Wildwood and businesses starting to feel the impact, and eventually many were forced to close. Importantly, locals did not lose faith in this seaside

treasure, and in recent years plans were put in place to bring back the reputation that it once had and make it better than ever by catering to today’s crowd. After a tremendous effort by the amazing rejuvenation team at The Wildwood Business Improvement District, Management Corporation, AKA ‘BID’, Downtown Wildwood is back and each year it just keeps getting better. The Downtown Wildwood rejuvenation has been a huge success which has benefitted not only Wildwood, but the entire state. Troiano Jr. said that the team behind the rejuvenation recognized that although there was room for building on past success, their mentality would have to shift. “People’s tastes have changed as well as their shopping methods. Also, the beach and the boardwalk are such awesome attractions that people flock to both day and night. The lure of the massive boardwalk takes from downtown.” Therefore, they knew they had to create something incredibly special, something that would set them apart from any other beach community and would once again show people that Downtown Wildwood was thriving and had something very unique to offer. One of the many reasons to visit Wildwood’s downtown area are the many exciting events planned for this summer.

↘Continued from 43 In the heart of Downtown is the brand-new Byrne Plaza (3400 Pacific Avenue) which will be hosting numerous events over the summer. This special events site boasts 60,000 square feet of outdoor space, providing ample room for social distancing. Its location on the action-packed Pacific Avenue means its proximity to everything ensures you can easily get around town on foot. Every Saturday there will be a farmer’s market from 8 am to 12:30 pm through Labor Day. The Wildwood Farmer’s market has been hugely successful in the past, winning numerous awards and gaining praise from vendors and shoppers alike. This year, it will be located in Byrne Plaza which is just across the road from the previous site and will have a wide range of vendors selling fresh vegetables, artisan baked goods, take-out food, handmade cosmetic products, jewelry, and so much more! Parking is free in the lot behind Pacific & Schellenger Avenues for shoppers visiting the market. If you are interested in a fun and inexpensive night out for the whole family, then movie night is exactly what you are looking for. Every Tuesday night Byrne Plaza hosts movie night where a different movie will be showing completely free of charge, starting as soon as it gets dark (around 8:15pm). Some of the family favorites being shown include Toy Story 4 (July 14th), The Incredibles (August 11th), and Pinocchio (August 18th), but for a full list go to: https://www.dooww. com/freemovie hus. Bring your beach chairs, blankets, and plenty of snacks and get ready to experience this unique movie setting under the stars. For some of us, the thing we missed most during the COVID-19 quarantine was the opportunity to

get out with friends and enjoy some live music and experience the excitement and energy that you can only get from a crowd of more than the previously mandated 10 people. Free live music concerts will be taking place every Thursday from 7:30 pm-9 pm with some of your favorite local acts performing. From July 3rd through to September 3rd you can bring your beach chairs and blankets down to Byrne Plaza to enjoy the likes of The Best of The Eagles (July 16th), 40 North (August 13th), and local fan favorite Animal House (July 30th) as well as many more incredible acts. A full schedule of live music at Byrne Plaza can be found at https://www.dooww. com/thursday-concerts. The popular local bar The Deck is directly across the street from Byrne Plaza. Here you can grab a few adult beverages and sample some of their delicious food including everything from loaded salads and burgers to fresh seafood and pasta. There is outdoor seating available at The Deck but get there early because this community gem fills up quick. If you are looking to maintain your beach body or if you are just looking to build enough stamina to walk Wildwood’s vast boardwalk, then fitness classes offered in Byrne Plaza are just what the doctor ordered. These classes run every weekday from 8:30 am to 9:30 am and accommodate all levels. Boot camp takes place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with Dion Cooley for just $10, and for those committed gym bunnies, there are discounted multi class punch cards available. Tuesdays and Thursdays are about finding your Zen as yoga instructor Claudia Gentzow is offering $5 yoga classes. Bring a group of friends or come on your own! Everyone is welcome to enjoy the classes

and as they say on their website, “Exercising is great for your body and your mind! Exercising outdoors is even better!” Downtown is somewhere where you will come for the day and end up staying the weekend with an abundance of activities available. There are several boutique shops in Downtown selling handmade crafts and apparel, great for purchases you would not find at any kind of shopping mall. There is also a wide range of restaurants and bars open until late and ready to host you as you see how it gained its reputation in years gone by. If you are interested in learning more about the history of Wildwood, you can visit the Wildwood Historical Museum (3907 Pacific Ave) and learn about the glory days in the 50s and 60s when Wildwood hosted world renowned artists such as Tony Bennett and The Supremes. This will bring back a sense of nostalgia to anyone who was lucky enough to live through this period, and if you weren’t lucky enough, their collection of memorabilia will make you feel like you did. Troiano Jr. believes the passion that the Wildwood community has cannot be topped. “Will Downtown Wildwood be as it was? The answer is no because the people of that day no longer exist.” But is Downtown Wildwood reinventing itself and growing

into one of the must-do visits of your Wildwood vacation, most definitely! Troiano Jr’s love and commitment for Wildwood was witnessed not only when he served as Mayor for several years, but also in the passion that continues today. Troiano Jr. Is still serving the community that he grew up in and loves. He is proud that the Downtown offers what many other vacation destinations don’t, “the best beaches, boardwalk, and businesspeople that are committed to making your stay a memorable one.” Sure, you can visit for just the day, but why risk missing something? A weekend stay will ensure you truly capture all that Downtown Wildwood has to offer, and I promise it won’t be your last visit. If you are looking for somewhere to stay, then visit https:// www.dooww.com/stay-downtown where you will find a wide range of hotels available that are suitable for all budgets. If you are looking for a special summer getaway this year, then Downtown Wildwood is the perfect destination. Situated in the heart of so much to do within walking distance, you can customize a visit to reflect your personal interests, and if you are like so many others, it may just become your annual tradition. Chris' Restaurant and The Flying Saucer

C

hris' Seafood Restaurant and Fish Market, at the base of the Ninth Street bridge in Ocean City was a popular eatery from 1932 - 1972. The restaurant served fish caught daily by its own fleet, and the market packed and shipped fish to all parts of the country. Some of Chris' boats were used to take vacationers on sightseeing rides and fishing trips. Gone with the Wind, Wild Goose, Flying Cloud, and Flying Pony were the fishing and touring boats. The most exciting boat was a surplus navy World War II PT boat named Flying Saucer. It had a 75 foot wooden hull with three engines, each burning 100 gallons of high octane airplane fuel

an hour. It held 125 passingers and was once considered the world's fastest motorboat ride. Because it was so fast, only the owner, Chris Montagna, operated the boat. Chris would talk to the passen-
