Somers Point is Awarded $755,000 Grant for Bike Path Improvements
S
omers Point, NJ Mayor Jack Glasser announced today that the City of Somers Point was recently awarded a $755,000 grant by the New Jersey Department of Transportation Point to widen its popular bike path and to install energy efficient LED lighting. These improvements will
extend to the entire length of the path to the Linwood border. “Somers Point has more biking trails than any community in South Jersey, and this grant will make the path safer for bicyclists, pedestrians and joggers. We thank the state for their continued support,� Glasser said. These improvements will comple-
ment a second, $171,000 grant that the City received in 2015 from the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to build a 500-foot bikeway to connect the Somers Point Bike Path to the Route 52 Causeway. “The Route 52 causeway is constantly used for biking and walking, and our bike path connects all the
City’s points of interest, including the schools and parks,� added Glasser. A State funded Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan was developed for the City in 2014. This plan has been used to leverage these and other grants to make the City safer for bicyclists, walkers and joggers. The City is also working with the State, the county and the New Jersey Highway Authority on yet another bike and pedestrian path – one that will connect Somers Point to Upper Township over the new Garden State Parkway Bridge. The City is committed to making sure that there is a safe connection between the existing bike paths and this new bridge. Plans call for bike paths on Somers Point-Mays Landing Road and Route 9 to the Parkway. Mayor Glasser noted, “With the growth in biking throughout the region, these improvements will provide yet another reason for people to reside in and visit Somers Point.� The City retained Rutala Associates, a local planning firm, to prepare the required application and secure this grant.

Hometown Hero: Massi’s Mission By Sarah Fertsch
S
ummertime is swimming time, even for people with special needs. With pools open and the beach only steps away, water has posed an enchantment for people with autism, and often a danger. The primary cause of death for children with autism under the age of 14 is drowning, according to the National Autism Association. FACES 4 Autism, a local autism support group, is trying to change that statistic.

In April 2015, mothers and grandmothers came together during the annual FACES 4 Autism comedy benefit, and chose to take action. Sandi D’Amato, grandmother of a child with autism, Massimo, had recently read in the newspaper about a child with autism who had wandered away from his family and drowned. She approached Isabelle Mosca, the then President of FACES 4 Autism (and current executive director), to start a swim program. Cleverly named Massi’s Mission, the “grassroots effort” would become a multi-faceted program that would help prevent people with autism from wandering, and eventually drowning. Kim Goodman, the current President of FACES 4 Autism, says that her own son Matthew, who has autism, is drawn to water. “I hold my breath every time I see an announcement about a person with autism goes missing”, said Goodman. “I am so grateful he (Matthew) knows how to swim.” Alexa Barrera, mother to Massimo and board member for FACES for Autism, described how the prevention of wandering can decrease drowning drastically. “First, kiddos wander, and then seek to fill a sensory need,” said
Barrera.. “If they don’t know how to be safe in water, they can drown.” Massi’s Mission has partnered with the Atlantic and Cape May County Sheriff’s Offices. Since the offices work to fit people with Dementia or any propensity to wander with tracking bracelets, the department has expanded to providing bracelets to people with autism. FACES 4 Autism also holds events to educate parents about the dangers of wandering, and allows to families to connect with police officers, so that if an emergency occurs, children can quickly and easily be recognized. Massi’s Mission has reached out to Tilton Athletic Club and the Jewish Community Center, where trained professionals work with children with autism to develop swim skills. FACES 4 Autism provides a behavioral support aide to assist whenever a child feels uncomfortable or needs a break. Lessons can be private, and or be within a group of three. Massi’s Mission has been blessed with instructors who have even worked with the Special Olympics. Despite 95 percent of the money going back into the community, Massi’s Mission still has expenses that need to be paid. Costs are specific to each
pool and instructor. However, FACES 4 Autism offers the Massi’s Mission Scholarship, which covers any costs that families cannot afford. “Autism is expensive,” said Alexa Barrera, co-founder of the program. “We don’t want to lose a life because someone cannot afford swim lessons”. Amy McCallum says her family was lucky enough to receive the Massi’s Mission Scholarship for both her daughter and son. “Coach Katrina has been both amazing and patient with both of them,” said McCallum. “They are leaving these lessons with a confidence I know will last them a lifetime!” Starting in 2017, Massi’s Mission will expand to include Bright Stars Gymnastics in Egg Harbor Township, allowing the program to reach as many families as possible. Over 25 children have completed the program, and according to Barrera that’s “25 lives saved.” “It’s an honor to let parents know that their kiddo is not going to drown,” said Barrera. s we steamroll through the month of August, lets be reminded that September 1st marks the start of Meteorological Fall. The calendar marks the end of summer in late September, but meteorologists like to use data from the National Climatic Data Center on a monthly basis, instead of fractions of months. Another reason is many human beings plan things more around months over astronomical seasons. The Meteorological Seasons run as follows: Summer runs from June 1st through August 31st. Autumn runs from September 1st through November 30th. Winter runs from December 1st through February 28th. Spring runs from March 1st through May 31st. There can be significant changes in average temperatures and precipitation depending on whether you use astronomical seasons or meteorological seasons, especially in the winter and fall.

I usually take anything beyond three days with a grain of salt when it comes to forecasting, but sometimes it's nice to take a look at what kind of patterns that we are likely to see over the next few months. For autumn, it looks like we will have well above average temperatures as we transition to La Nina. That does not mean it will stay warm all the time, as there will be ample days of average and below average temperatures, but the general trend is looking toward a warm autumn. In case you forgot, the fall of 2015 consisted of a strong El Nino, which paved the way for a warmer than normal winter and only one major snowstorm. La Nina also means a colder than normal winter, but more on that as we get closer to Thanksgiving. So I would like to ask all of you a question. When planning vacations, camping trips, weddings, important family events: Do you make plans according to what month it is? In other words, do you book a vacation to the Caribbean Islands in February to get away from the cold? Or do you plan things according to the astronomical seasons, such as saying that it's ok to go camping starting at the end of March because it will officially be spring? Anthropoid is based on a true story, where two Czechoslovakian soldier were tasked with assassinating the head of Hitler’s SS, Reynhard Heirdrich. It’s a dangerous assassination story, filled with deception, stealth, and love. Toby Jones, who has recently appeared in Marvel films and TV shows as German scientist Armin Zola, costars, alongside Jaimie Dorman and a stellar cast.
Sausage Party, August, 12th, Rated-R **WARNING** THIS IS NOT A FAMILY MOVIE FOR KIDS! Contrary to its innocent looks, which involve talking foods, this is absolutely not a family movie in any way. However, to be fair, Sausage Party is a big spoof on Disney and Pixar films. Sausage Party is the first computer animated film to be rated R, ever since these films began in 1995, with Pixar’s Toy Story. In the movie, all food yearns to be taken off the grocery shelves, bought, and taken home. A young sausage wishes to be with a female hot-dog bun, because they were made to be together. Upon arriving home, they discover the horrible truth and watch as other foods are eaten alive. It’s up to the foods to escape this terrible destiny. The movie was produced by Point Grey Pictures, Seth Rogen’s production Company, which helped create This Is the End, The Interview, Neighbors, and The Night Before. Sausage Party stars Seth Rogen, Kristin Wiig, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Craig Robinson, Salma Hayek, and much more. Of special note, legendary music creator Alen Menken, who moved mountains in Disney’s animated productions, and created some of the most beloved musical tracks of all time, has created tracks for Sausage party.
In a surprise hit from left field, Jeff Bridges and Chris Pine gather together for an exciting, wild-western like action film about a sheriff, burglars, and a modern day bank heist. Facing foreclosure, a family takes matters into their own hands and storms a bank, hoping to use that money to save their farm. However, law enforcement responds and a battle of bullets and ideologies unfolds. The movie is an independent film, screened at various film festivals to critical acclaim. It seems like Jeff Bridges, also known as “The Dude” has moved up in the world.
Pete’s Dragon, August 12th, Rated PG One of the strangest, cult movies in Disney’s history is Pete’s Dragon. Released in 1977, Pete’s Dragon told the story of a Dragon, Elliot, who befriends an orphaned boy, Pete . Keeping in line with its route of live-action remakes, Disney is releasing a live-action, realistic remake of the classic. Pete’s Dragon will follow the same story strain ad a family, adventure film, but it is not believed this film will feature music numbers or a talking dragon. Of note, Elliot the dragon has gone through a re-design, as he now has fur instead of scales. Pete’s Dragon will star Robert Medford and Karl Urban.
War Dogs, August 19th, Rated R Todd Phillips, the director of War Dogs, made a reputation with The Hangover trilogy, a trio of R-Rated films that focused on a squad of men going through a multitude of outrageous situations the night before a wedding. The movie’s comedy paved the way for other R-Rated films, such as Paul Feig’s Bridesmaids. Todd takes on war in a movie that is actually based on the Rolling Stone article fo the same name by Guy Lawson. Set in 2007, Jonah Hill and Miles Teller are a duo that manages to secure a $300-million-dollar government contract, which involves selling weapons to soldiers in Afghanistan. They live a life of danger and grandeur from the business. It looks to be a blur between an outrageous comedy and a potentially serious war drama.

Tron & Tron: Disc Wars, Walt Disney Interactive, 1983 Based on the movie of the same name, the Tron arcade cabinet is considered to be a culturally important video game cabinet, much like the movie itself. The movie, which still has a pulsating audience in 2016, was the first movie to use computer-generated imagery. Such technology had never been used before,
and it would pave the way for the use of computer and animation effects in films, such as James Cameron’s Terminator 2: judgement Day, as well as Roberto Zemeckis’ Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Tron the video game has the wonderful illustrations from the movie surrounding the cabinet, such as the characters, the vehicles, and the dreaded supreme villain, the MCP. The game had four minigames inspired by the movie. Using the glowing-blue joystick, players could select which minigame they could play. There were four games inside the cabinet: Light-tank battles, Light cycle battles, the i/O game, and the MCP boss fight. The objective was to complete these four minigames repeatedly, each time the difficulty ranking higher and higher, in order to get the highest score possible. The arcade game was lauded for its presentation and visual styles for its time. This was followed up by a sequel: Discs of Tron, which focused solely on the unique disc combat established in the movie. In the game, players must throw their discs and use the surfaces of the 3-D perspective to accurately defeat their foes!

Star Wars: The Arcade Game, Atari 1983 In 1977, George Lucas and Lucasfilm Ltd changed cinema and the entire world with the release of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Quickly becoming a global cultural sensation, every single medium and entertainment platform changed, including video games. Most video games that would be released in 1983 would become inspired by the space battle of Star Wars. Star Wars first made its gaming debut in 1983 with Star Wars Arcade. Star Wars Arcade is a rail-shooting type of game, where a set spacecraft is set on a certain path, and the player must shoot down the Empire’s best forces. While the X-Wing is on autopilot, it is up to the player to shoot down all the possible targets on the screen. This includes a mixture of TIE fighters, defense towers, Darth Vader himself, and the infamous exhaust port, located along the Death Star trench. The game is displayed in a variety of neon colored, vector based graphics, and featured music and voice samples from the movie. While the vector graphics, which look like shapes and lines, are simple, it does evoke the retro science fiction feeling. The shooting and gameplay were revolutionary for its time, especially the arcade cabinet design, which evoked a space cockpit design.

He created the smashing hit, The Secret of NIMH, alongside producer Gary Goldman. From that success, the duo worked together on a video game called Dragon’s Lair, utilizing the very expensive Laser Disc format to create and arcade cabinet that would run full-motion, hand-drawn, animations. Dragon’s Lair puts players as Dirk the Daring, a young knight on the quest to rescue Princess Daphne from the clutches of an evil wizard, deep within a dark and mystifying castle. Players watch the animation, then use the joystick to quickly avoid traps and hazards. The game was lauded for its art style, animation, and sound. It became an incredibly revolutionary direction at the time, and would pave the way for future directions in video games and moves.

In Spy Hunter, players fasten their seatbelts and control the G-6155 special interceptor. The interceptor is loaded with machine guns, smoke screen, armor, and maximum speed. You objective, should you choose to accept it, is to wipe out the enemy and get the high score. The game was unique as it was a combination between a shoot- ‘em up game, or shmup, as well as a driving game. The game was known for its style and gameplay, which was unique at the time. Most notably, was the adaptation of the infamous Peter Gunn theme, which was first composed for the 1958 tv private-eye series.

CRDA Sponsors Low-Cost Parking Options for 2016 Beach Concerts and Major Events ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) is again providing reduced parking rates at several surface lots and garages for Atlantic City’s 2016 summer beach concerts and signature events. Reduced hourly rates will also be available throughout the summer season. obert M. 39th Annual Somers Point Good Old Days Festival Set for Saturday, September 10
The Lie of Organic Honey
Music on two stages, antique cars, and children’s entertainment highlight this annual festival

he Annual Somers Point Good Old Days Festival will say farewell to summer in Somers Point from noon - 6 p.m. Saturday, September 10 at John F. Kennedy Memorial Park – an event that the City of Somers Point anticipates thousands to attend. In addition to antique cars on display, children’s entertainment including carnival games, inflatables, a magician, pony rides, karate demonstrations, as well as K-9 demonstrations, there will be over 20 vendors and community groups, and food and treats including hot dogs and hamburgers fresh from the grill. Attendees will enjoy FREE live musical performances on two different stages throughout the day from noon - 6 p.m. The musical line-up will feature Geri Mingori’s tribute to Classic Rock divas Stevie Nicks, Janice Joplin, and Bonnie Raitt; and original songs from the Geri Mingori
Band as well as local favorites Hawkins Road and the Dan Burke Band. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Lawrence “Bud” Kern Scholarship Foundation. Established in 1979 in honor of Lawrence “Bud” Kern, former Recreation Commission Chairperson and Little League President, the fund recognizes graduating Somers Point high school students who have demonstrated community spirit and pride through their involvement in civic and scholastic activities while displaying a singular dedication to a purpose. Lawrence “Bud” Kern was instrumental in the development of recreation facilities and programs in Somers Point and expended countless volunteer hours in service to his community. It was his idea to hold an endof-summer community picnic, which gave rise to the Good Old Days Festival. rganic is a hot market right now, and no doubt you’ve seen countless products touting their organic ingredients. Many of them do, but the “greenwashing” of food (highlighting the naturalness of a product just to boost sales) means advertisers take a few liberties in product descriptions; sometimes they outright lie. Without doing heaps of research every time you go shopping, it’s hard to know what the truth is about what you’re buying, but there is always one ingredient that is never organic – honey. The foraging nature of the honeybee is what makes organic honey impossible. On the average, a honeybee will travel up to four miles from the hive in search of nectar and pollen; unlike organic beef that would be raised in a controlled environment, eating grass in an organic field, you can’t cage honeybees. They forage far and wide for the hive’s survival, which means that any nectar-bearing plant within a fourmile radius from the beehive is fair game to be visited by honeybees. While the bees may gather nectar from your organic
garden, they may also stop at the flowers next to the landfill on the way home. So, unless you can guarantee that all those plants were grown organically, without pesticides or petrochemicals in organic soil, or in a controlled environment (such as an isolated biodome), you don’t have organic honey – you just have plain ol’ honey. Does this mean you shouldn’t buy honey? Absolutely not. Honey is still one of the best natural sweeteners, and has numerous health benefits, from wound care to allergy control, from reducing ulcers to fighting cancer, not to mention cough reduction (and so much more). And since honey has never been organic (at least not since the Industrial Era) you’re not missing out on quality, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make better choices as a consumer. Your best bet for good quality honey is to learn where your honey suppliers are located. Local honey producers that keep their hives near organic fields and orchards would have the best quality of honey; not organic, but better than most. Knowing honey can’t be organic is sweet in other ways – it’s a sign of product greenwashing. If you see a product advertised as containing “organic honey,” think twice before buying into an advertising lie and giving them your hard-earned dollar.

Mo Colon: Art In The Everyday by Georgina Hand

he success and continued growth of Atlantic City’s Arts District, since the opening of The Arts Garage in 2013, deserves to be recognized and celebrated. It’s the result of many dedicated people working together to enrich their community. One such person is 27-year-old artist Mo Colon, who has a passion not only for art, but for Atlantic City.
Photo by Listen Mo’s been involved in the Arts District since its inception, showing and selling work at the Arts Garage, helping develop the Arts Alley and Arts Corral, and serving on the board of the of the Atlantic City Arts Foundation. Mo believes art benefits the community and it’s an artist’s duty to help create opportunities for others. Working under the name of Moon Beast, Mo creates art, photography and film, and is now opening a streetwear boutique with two friends inside the Arts Garage, called Ocean 1.

I wasn’t always able to get my own, so I would paint my old sneakers to make them “new” again.” Mo always enjoyed being creative, and by 8th grade, was taking advanced art. “I think art was always my safe place. My parents were always very supportive of my interests. I am very thankful for that. It allowed me creative freedom early on in my life.” At high school Mo also received encouragement and support for art in and out the classroom from Ms. Zab, an exceptional art teacher. “I knew I was an artist in high school but I really accepted it when I decided to pursue it as a career.” After high school, Mo worked with a group of friends on a clothing brand called Art Before Crime. Later discovering a talent for photography and film when opportunities arose, the artist took the risk and ran with it. Today, Mo works as a street and lifestyle photographer, “I like to take pictures of anything interesting to me, always looking for inspiration contrasting colors, art in everyday items, as well as portraits of strangers and friends. I try to capture visual representations of my subjects lives and create a catalog of Atlantic City in street photographs.” Also an aspiring street artist, Mo has a mural on display at The Arts Garage and is trying to raise money for another. Mo plans to make a documentary about The Culprits, a local brand that creates hand printed street-wear. “I’ve also started my blog back up, it’s called Streets Revisited, it tells the stories of locals and their dreams.”

Maritime Author to Discuss Book

im Kirk, author of the book Golden Light: The 1878 Dairy of Captain Thomas Rose Lake will be presented by the Somers Point Historical Society on August 16 at 7 PM. The book was originally started by James Kirk II and completed by his son James B. Kirk III. The diary of Captain Thomas Lake reproduces the leatherbound diary of a 19th century sloop captain shortly before his death at age 22 from tuberculosis. There is a local connection to the story. This program will be of special interest to those interested in Maritime History. Books will also be available for purchase. The movie is a newcomer to the animated family line-up this year, as it is coming from development studio, LAIKA, the house that made classics such as Coraline, Paranorman, and The Boxtrolls. All of these previous films, which used extremely sharp stop-motion animation, were met with critical and commercial acclaim. In Kubo, a young by, voiced by Game of Thrones Art Pakinson, is supporting his ailing mother. Suddenly, an old, vengeful spirit emerges from the afterlife, seeking payback against Kubo and his family. Monsters and ghouls emerge everywhere putting the land in peril. Kubo must fight these demons and seek the mystical armor of magical legend to successfully rid the land of evil. The film also features the voice talent of Charlize Theron.
Ben Hur is a classic Roman tale of betrayal and redemption. A young man is framed for assassination and sent to slavery. His shot at payback lies in a grand chariot race. Ben-Hur is the latest adaptation of the 1880 novel of the same name by Lewis Wallace. Film historians may recall the 1959 version, which was lauded for its cinematic achievements and won an Oscar. This latest telling of the classic story stars Morgan Freeman and Jack Huston. It is directed by Timur Bekmambetov.
Hands of Stone, August 26th, Rated R In another completely surprise hit from left field, Robert De Niro intimidatingly walks on the screen and into this true story of real-life boxer Roberto Duran, who began his career at the age of 16 and embarked on a stellar career, which included taking down Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980. Hands of Stone is an independent film, that will have a limited release in theaters. Roberto DeNiro plays as boxing trainer Ray Arcel. Edgar Ramirez plays as Roberto Duran. For anyone who was a big fan of late 90s and early 00’s Usher stars as Sugar Ray Leonard in the movie.

Create a Custom Backyard Bird-Haven by Leslie Graham

ow is the perfect time to make plans to turn your backyard into a birdwatcher’s bonanza! The major migrations through Atlantic County start in mid to late September. There are all types of birds that stopover in southern New Jersey from sparrows to shorebirds. You can craft a habitat that appeals to just a few of your favorite birds or open your arms to attract a broad spectrum of species that refuel on their way south. The more variety you provide, the bigger the chance of getting that perfect photo of a rare winged visitor to post to friends and family. Who knows, if you provide the right invitation, a Great Blue Heron might show up for breakfast at your place after a stormy New Jersey night. There are a variety of feeds and feeders that you can order online or find at your local pet/feed store. The following is a list of different types of feeding vehicles that you can mix and match to create a custom birding environment to suit your desires. Hanging Tube/Sock Feeders: attracts small birds, including our state bird the goldfinch. It excludes larger birds such as grackles and jays. Uses Nyger seed or other tiny seed mixes. These type of feeders are best to handle large numbers of birds as it holds a good supply of seed which should be consumed within a day or two. Block the bottom of this sort of

feeder and dump old seeds each time the feeder is refilled to prohibit rot. Upright Deadwood Feeders: Attracts woodpeckers, waxwings, thrashers, thrushes, orioles, tanagers, and other soft food lovers. Get a piece of deadwood no less than 4 feet in length and about 7 to 8 inches in diameter, the more holes the better. Feel free to drill a few extra holes if needed. Plant one end securely into the ground. Fill the holes with nut butters, suet, and fresh or dried fruit. If you are feeling creative you can make a yard sculpture using different pole lengths in a pattern as a yard display. Suet Feeders: Attracts soft food lovers such as chickadees, nuthatches, titmice, jays, and starlings. They are plastic-coated mesh cages that can be nailed to a tree or suspended. Suet cakes mixed with feed seeds are readily available to place in the cages. Seed Feeders: Attracts seed eaters (jays, cardinals, buntings, grosbeaks, sparrows). These come in several varieties and sizes. Since the seed should be consumed within a day or two, start small until you have a good feel for the amount that will be eaten in that time. They all use standard mixed seed foods. Some

are made to attach to your window. These afford the best close-up views. Others are platforms placed on poles or railings. Platform feeders attract the greatest variety of birds. And lastly, there are hopper-type feeders which hold the most seeds and handle the greatest number of birds. These are usually suspended. All of them require good daily cleaning to ensure that seed food does not become soiled by droppings or rotten from moisture. Models that include a squirrel baffle are recommended if you don’t want to feed the fluffy-tailed bandits as well. There are simple things you can do that require nothing more than being aware that they are a boon to your beaked buddies. The tips listed below are based on natural habitat enhancements of what may already be in your yard. Snag Swag: If you have a dead tree that is not in any danger of property damage, just leave it standing. Dead tree snags provide both food in the form of insects and cavity shelters. Pile Style: Create a stick and leaf pile that will provide a haven for feed bugs. Birds know that standing piles of sticks and leaves are a great place to pick up a meal. Pick a spot and start a pile now. By winter the

pile will be inhabited by a multitude of munchy, crunchy goodness for the birds. Garden Goodies: Let your flower or vegetable garden stand over the winter. Tiny seeds, invisible to humans, are readily harvested by birds. Flowers such as sunflowers, coneflowers, rudbeckia daisy, and asters often hold onto their seeds right into the winter months and provide ripe pickings. You can enhance this seed spread with cracked corn, acorns, and striped sunflower seeds to provide a ground-eaters smorgasbord for Wild Turkey and Morning Doves. Berry Berry Good: Plant native berry bushes that bear fruit late in the season. These can add interest and sustenance around feeders, plus a burst of color to a stark winter landscape. In this area, Red Chokeberry, Northern Bayberry, and Juniper bushes are good choices. Tree Spree: Atlantic County is blessed with an abundance of oak trees, which are of huge habitat value to birds. If you don’t already have an oak tree in your yard, plant one! American Holly and Atlantic White Cedar are good second choices since both bear fruit that hangs well into the winter months. Luxury Spa: Invest in a heated birdbath to attract a multitude of different birds and provide much-needed water when other sources become frozen.

Phillies Have Plenty To Play For by Matthew Christy

ven though a playoff spot is not looking likely for the Philadelphia Phillies this season, this club has many reasons to finish out the season strong. Top prospect right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson made his major league debut on Saturday. He figures to play a prominent role in the rotation in 2017 and beyond. Vince Velasquez is finishing his first full season in the major leagues and has pitched very well. Zach Eflin has been a pleasant surprise since his call-up in late May. Aaron Nola's first full season in the majors has been filled with inconsistency. He is still young enough that he will make the proper adjustments needed to become a true asset. If Jeremy Hellickson pitches well enough down the stretch, does he get a qualifying offer from the Phillies? If so, it is likely to be in the neighborhood of $16 million. If offered and he signs elsewhere, the Phillies get a draft pick as compensation. Lastly, JeradEickoff has been very solid this year as a number three or number four starter.

The offense has much to prove over the final couple months of the season. Aaron Altherr, who just returned from wrist surgery, seems like he is going to be a key part of the lineup next season. Oduebel Herrera appears to be wearing down after a strong first half, which led to his first All Star appearance. Tommy Joseph deserves to open the season as the team's starting first baseman after showing he can play the position this year. Maikel Franco has proved he is a middle of the lineup hitter and can carry this club. Who will be the starting catcher in 2017? Has Cameron Rupp done enough to prove he should be the guy? Freddy Galvis has much to play for as top prospect J. P. Crawford is likely to take his spot at some point. He is likely auditioning for other teams or for the Phillies if they think he can handle a position switch. The bullpen will be interesting to watch over the final handful of games. Does Jeanmar Gomez reach the 30-save mark and go into next season as the closer? Does GM Matt Klentak pull what he did last year and trade his closer for young prospects,
Vince Velasquez similar to the Ken Giles trade last season? Hector Neris is the guy to possibly replace Gomez, if he is traded along with Eubray Ramos. This will also mark the final two months that we will see Carlos Ruiz and Ryan Howard in Phillies uniforms. Those two players have done so much for our franchise, including bringing a World Series title to Philadelphia in 2008. They will always be remembered fondly, and I want to personally thank them for all they have done. Enjoy the final two months of the season, as there is much to play for!

’ve been on the field, pro; I’ve been behind the wall, con. Now I’m back from the grave of failure with iCONVICTION. What is #iCONVICTION? I like to describe it by what Bible teacher Howard Hendricks once said, “A belief is something you will argue about. A conviction is something you will die for!” It seems many people are getting their individual identities from the world around and outside them--the iEconomy (iPhone, iPad, iMac, iMessage, iEverything), it’s all about king “I”. This identity is fickle and fleeting – as opposed to a core conviction within a person, which is valuable and affirming. Since the message we are putting out is usually determined by the conviction we hold within, then perhaps it’s time to get back to an internal and eternal core conviction – where our personal resolve is governed by God, regardless of the world’s pressures that surround us. There will always be pressure, and it’s either a friend or a foe depending on how we let it mold us. I feel this pressure as of late, not because I am under it but because

it is under me. It moves me forward and motivates me to press on for sure. Against the odds. Against the sways of the world. And even against the ways of my own will. While I would prefer not to be vocal or visible, God’s grace cannot be contained nor can it be kept hidden. So the pressure pushes my iCONVICTION out, like a volcano that was dormant for years and is now ready to burst forth. That best explains this transition from prison to freedom. Despite my desire to stay under the radar
for the sake of being comfortable, I cannot, due to the way this pressure pushes me to remain accountable It’s not my beliefs that garner respect from others; it’s my conviction that instigates reflection for others. At times, it is overwhelming, because speaking out promotes acceptance or provokes rejection – the people hate me or they love me. Both responses to “my story” produce pressure, and I must balance both ends of the spectrum in order
to remain whole and usable by God. Here is the key however: The more I own my conviction, the more value I bring to any situation. The greater pressure that is within me is the only pressure I want to govern me. “He who is in [me] is greater than he who is in the world.” (I John 4:4) Pressure produces passion as a friend, but this same pressure can produce fear as a foe. I have to make a choice on a daily basis. Fear may be ever present, but courage pushes through the fear and makes passion the driving force. So here we go. Remove the clams from the pot using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a serving dish. Add the lemon juice to the pot, then whisk the butter into the sauce, a little at a time, until it becomes glossy and emulsified. Pour the sauce over the slams and serve immediately with lots of crusty Italian bread.

1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp coarsely cracked black peppercorns 1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, minced 2 tsp Creole seasoning (see recipe below) 2 cloves garlic, minced 50 littleneck clams, scrubbed and rinsed of sand 2 lemons, juiced 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold, cut into pieces Crusty Italian bread for dipping
INSTRUCTIONS Simmer the Worcestershire sauce, rosemary, black pepper, creole seasoning and garlic in a large pot over medium heat for about 2 minutes. Add the clams and toss to coat with the liquid. Cover, turn the heat to high, and cook until the clams just open about 6-8 minutes.
Serves 6-8 as an appetizer (Note from Nicole: I find commercial Creole seasonings to be too salty, especially when cooked in this dish, as the clams can be pretty salty themselves. Making your own is easyyou can control the amount of salt, and it keeps for quite a while in your pantry. Plus, you likely already have most of the ingredients on hand.)

other has all the answers. Mother Nature, that is. As I sit here Good Readers trying to overcome a small wall of dreaded “Writer's Block” and the associated insecurity of, “What am I doing, I'm no writer,” I keep turning my gaze to the goings on outside my window. That’s a side benefit and blessing to being a smidge ADD. While everything is all green and lush and beautifully robust with the vitality of summer, I see one of the first signs of autumn: a golden leaf that has fallen to the ground. A reminder that

Y'all have style and grace and were raised with more than a modicum of decency and respect. I am referring to those people who were not born and bred in our town and who are, therefore, deserving of our pity for that bit of bad luck for the location of their birth. “Those People” are, more often than not, transplanted from a umm… well, let's just say a more Northerly or Southerly part of our region, shall we? Often times referred to as “Bennies” or “Shooebies.” And they’re usually seen driving what they refer to as

here is nothing quite like the feeling of dipping your toes into the Atlantic Ocean, a crisp refreshing summer ale in hand, while watching the perfect sunset disappear. All the red, yellow, orange hues fade away, as do the days and beers of summer. I embrace the long awaited arrival of the fall equinox. Shorter days, cooler nights. That being said, it is time, my friends, to bid "fare thee well" to the shandies, the lemons and grapefruits, the watermelons. All those wonderful

Or what time of day it is. That leaf I mentioned earlier? Well, you might be saying that it's just a leaf that got torn down from the wind. Ok. I'll give you that. Completely plausible. However...it's one of several scattered about. Again, logical thought would say that they are all from one of the many storms that came barreling through recently. (And that I might need to rake my lawn.) But if you look closer, you will see that all the leaves on the ground are from the same type of tree: a Tulip Tree. Strange, right? Nope. Any farmer worth their weight in seed will tell you this is a sign that the end is close for summer. Speaking of signs, you want to know another good sign of the seasonal change? Farmers’ Roadside Stands. I'm not talking about those highfalutin indoor markets where there is air conditioning and rows of cashiers… What I'm speaking of is the little mom’n’pop, no frills markets, the ones that usually have one of the working tractors hitched to a wagon out front loaded to the gills with produce just picked that morning. A real farm market.

What makes them think it's ok to make some snide comment about having to pay sales tax on the flowers we grew? Do they show shock and annoyance when they buy flowers at Home Depot or Lowe's? I think not. Or when they try to haggle over the price. Ooooo....nothing burned the butts of my folks more then when someone tried to talk us down from our already lower then grocery store prices!! And we always had better quality too!! Like Flo used to tell Mel back in the 70's, “Kiss my grits!!” Luckily, my folks would have rathered the crops rot on the vine than cut our throats and lower our prices - and therefore lower our profits - than give into those whinny uppity folks who look down on honest, hardworking farm people. Anywho...as I was saying, working in sync with Mother Nature you learn to read her subtle signs. Tulip Trees are one of the first to signal that Autumn is closing in on us. Time to get the harvest in before winter's icy grip. Speaking of icy grip...I’m going to put forth my fledgling farmer's opinion and say this: winter will be heavy on the precipitation side. But only Mother knows.

of Sweden, the reigning British Open titlist; Bubba Watson, who is ranked sixth and his American teammate Rickie Fowler at seventh; and, Master’s Champion Danny Willett of Great Britain, who is ranked ninth. Meanwhile, the world’s top four women’s players are in Rio, led by world No. 1 Lydia Ko, who carried the Olympic torch for her country of New Zealand. Along with Ko are Brooke M. Henderson, Canada; Inbee Park, South Korea; and, American Lexi Thompson. The combination of so many men skipping out on the games and the world’s best women teeing it up in Rio provides an opening for women’s golf. The LPGA is hoping the Olympics can be a showcase for the women’s game and attract more sponsors and income opportunities for the players, while also growing the game globally. Unlike their male counterparts on the PGA Tour, the

or the first time since 2004, when a Canadian named Chandler Egan won the gold medal in St. Louis, golf will be an Olympic sport in Rio de Janeiro. Both men and women will compete in a 72-hole tournament. The field of 60 men begin play Thursday August 11, with the final round on Sunday, August 14. The 60 women will then begin their quest for the gold on Wednesday August 17, with the final round on Saturday August 20. The much-anticipated competition has been overshadowed by the number of players, mostly men, who have decided not to participate. The world’s top four players -- Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy -- declined to play due to health concerns over the spread of the Zika Virus. Only four of the world’s top-10 male golfers are entered: Fifth-ranked Henrik Stenson

top women golfers earn far less in prize money. While women’s golf has come a long way in recent decades, there are currently 37 men on the PGA Tour who have earned more prize money in 2016 that Ko. Not only have many top men decided to stay home, but McIlroy ignited a bit of a personal Olympic flame recently when he spoke with reporters about his decision to bypass the games, “I didn’t get into golf to try and grow the game. I got into golf to win championships.” While McIlroy may not have gotten into golf to “grow the game,” a recent study by the National Golf Foundation found the game’s popularity dwindling in the U.S. In 2005, there were 30 million people in the country who played at least one round a year. That number declined by six million a decade later. If one looks deeper into the study, the numbers are even more troubling. Participation among golfers 18 to 34 plunged 30 percent during the past 20 years, a big generational shift. Also, 57 percent of kids under 18 had
negative impressions of the game, with the most common response being the game was “boring.” I can’t blame a player from staying away from Rio due to health concerns. Yet, McIlroy’s comments fly in the face of the PGA’s historical mission. He and other top players now earn millions of dollars in prize money, which is enhanced many times over, thanks to corporate sponsorship. From McIlroy’s hat to his shirt, clubs, and bag, he rakes in more money from corporate sponsors than he does in official prize money each year. In 2015 alone, he earned $7.6 million playing golf and a whopping $35 million in endorsements. If the game of golf does not “grow,” McIlroy’s bank account will shrink. This is not meant to be a bully beatdown on McIlroy. He’s a brilliant player and incredibly popular among those young people who do play golf. There have been numerous times where I have seen a group of young golfers practicing on the range. And much as kids in years gone by imitated their favorite baseball players’ batting stance, these kids are trying to do their best Rory impression; his swing is that glorious. While Day and Spieth, especially, have left Rory behind a bit in recent years, mostly due to their superior short games, it is McIlroy’s long and powerful swing, with the most picturesque finish that captures the heart and spirit of young players. The controversy surrounding the lack of top men players, with the added toxicity of McIlroy’s recent comments, will be an intriguing backdrop as the competition begins. In the end, I honestly think the sport, and especially women’s golf, will be a hit among the global audience; and it needs to. You see, there is no commitment for golf to be in the 2020 games.
