The Surfer Dude uses a self-righting design to keep him upright and is powered by waves. No batteries are needed for this gnarly dude. The Surfer Dude is only $20 recommended for anyone over 3 years of age.

One of the most popular games I’ve seen being played at beaches and backyards is Kanjam. With the help of a teammate, the object of the game is to throw disc into a circular can. Points are awarded for getting your Frisbee into the can or touching the top of it.

If you manage to toss the Frisbee into the middle of the can is an automatic win. This unique game is fun to play, and it comes in different sizes, so you can take the game anywhere, from the lawn to the pool. Kanjam costs $20 for the junior model and up to $40 for the regular size and is recommended for anyone ages 12 and over.

ummer is officially here, which means more time to be outside, enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. If you’re looking for some fun activities for family and friends while creating lasting memories, try some of these recommendations.

Kite flying is a traditional pastime that spans generations.

They come in many different sizes and designs from the traditional diamond shape to dolphins, butterflies, dragons, and birds. All you need is a nice, breezy day and your kite will sail into the sky. Be sure to watch for objects like trees and bushes, and make sure to have enough room to move around.

Costs start around $8 including string.

There is nothing like a friendly game of corn hole to make anyone’s day. Each team is given a set of beanbags with the objective to toss onto a tilted rectangular board. Points are awarded for keeping their beanbags on the playing surface, and three points for shooting it into the hole. Boards come in regulation size and modified versions, like the three-hole washer. This game costs start at $15 for a child’s set, and up to several hundred dollars for regulation size boards.

From wooded to Velcro, you and a friend may want to indulge in a game of paddle ball. Toss the ball back and forth using a wooden racquet. It’s simple, fun and can be played anywhere. Most paddle ball sets will cost $10 on average.

Summer Vibes From the Editor

“Y

our vibe attracts your tribe,” they say.

“The energy you put out into the world is what will come back to you.” So if I want to be surrounded by happy, positive people then I need to be a happy and positive person.

How do I experience happiness amidst the stress and chaos of life?

Who in “my situation” (and we all have a situation) could be positive and cheerful? I wonder.

Becoming aware of the energy or vibrations that I am putting out into the world, whether positive or negative, was my first step towards creating the kind of vibe I wanted to possess.

Prior to that, my feelings were in the driver's seat. They simply happened to me, leaving me at their mercy. Then one day I decided to take my power back.

I declared that happiness is not a feeling, but rather a decision. I decided that I was going to be happy…..No.

Matter. What.

The decision was just the start of my mission to improve my vibe. My forced smile eventually turned into a habit of smiling, just because. It’s a daily decision and I have to admit, some days, even years are easier than others.

After a while though, I noticed two things. First of all, when I act happy, (even if I am acting), I ultimately end up feeling better. Secondly, when I act happy, the people around me feel better. I truly think joyfulness is contagious.

Once those two things are in place, the real magic occurs. When I feel better and the people around me feel better, more desirable outcomes always ensue. Voila, a positive vibe can change everything.

Organizations and businesses also have a vibe which can be either positive or negative. Here at Shore Local, it's a priority to us to keep it positive.

It is easy to talk about what's wrong (especially this year!) but it is empowering to talk about what is right. A neighborhood, a town, a city is not just made up of the latest breaking news or tragedy. Rather it is made up of the heart and souls of so many good folks doing life in a hun-

South Jersey mourns the passing of Barbara Altman, First Lady of the Airwaves

“Y

our reputation precedes you. Please join me as my guest on my radio show," said Barbara Altman . That day an extraordinary woman and exceptionally caring friend entered my life. Today, all who knew and loved Barbara mourn the passing of the First Lady of The Airwaves in South Jersey.

Barbara Altman was born in Ventnor, where she was a lifelong resident.

She was one of 5 children, being the eldest of her four brothers. Barbara attended Ventnor City Public Schools and Atlantic City High School. She went on to graduate from Glassboro State College.

Barbara started her career in broadcasting over 45 years ago. She

was the first woman to broadcast on the first FM station in Atlantic County. Then it was WOSJ FM which now is WMGM FM. Barbara went on to host her own radio show, "Barbara Altman’s Front Porch" on NewsTalk 1400 am WOND which she will always be remembered for.

Over the years she was the well deserved recipient of the Howard L. Green Humanitarian Award and earned her way into The Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame, which she was most proud of.

Barbara Altman was the Director of the Atlantic City Marathon for over 17 years. She selflessly was an advocate for The Community Food Bank of South Jersey Southern Branch.

She also was the author of two books, “I will Win” and “The Spirit of Many Faces."

I remember as a teenager Barbara and her husband Ed would come to play tennis at the Ventnor tennis courts each morning as I sat at the front desk and took their reservation.

I recall her kind smile and elegance.

May the angels surround you Barbara as you are now joined with your beloved husband Ed running on that long boardwalk in the sky. Condolences go to her daughter Jennifer, her son Dan and his wife Kim. Her brother Ed who would call into her show often. The light of Barbara's life was her granddaughter, Joelle.

Know Your Greens Vegging at the Shore

hen I was growing up, iceberg lettuce was the only green found in our salad bowls and calling iceberg a green is a bit of a stretch. If you are headed out to a local farmers market or are part of a CSA (community supported agriculture) chances are that you are seeing a variety of greens, some of which you might not be familiar with.

Here is some information to help you decide which would work best on your table. If you always stick with the same greens, it’s time to expand your horizons!

I’ve been doubling up on arugula in my weekly farm share from B&B Farms because it’s my favorite green.

Arugula has a bold, peppery taste. I find that it works best in salads with fruit like apples or peaches and finished with a Dijon vinaigrette. I also sometimes top pizza with arugula which is surprisingly delicious.

If you have never had spinach

picked in the last 24 hours from hitting your plate, you need to put down that storebought plastic container and get yourself some fresh spinach. It will change your life.

Okay, maybe that’s being a little dramatic but there is seriously no substitute for freshly picked spinach. Besides being a perfect salad green, spinach goes in my quesadillas, frittatas and pasta sauces.

Let’s talk about kale which gained trendy notoriety in the past five to ten years. Is it as good as all the hype? The answer is yes. Kale is a sturdier green than spinach and very versatile. If you are planning to eat it raw in salads, I suggest giving it a good massage to soften it up.

My two favorite ways to enjoy kale are in kale pesto and in kale smoothie bowls.

To make the most perfect smoothie bowl I mix kale with almond

milk, frozen bananas, frozen mango, a scoop of peanut butter and a spoonful of honey. I blend that all together and top it with

granola for lunch perfection!

I just started getting Swiss chard last week in my farm share.

Besides it’s beautiful pinkish color, this is another favorite green that I like softening in a pan with some garlic and olive oil.

It works great in soup or mixed with a grain like quinoa or farro.

Another green that often gets overlooked is beet greens. Yes, it’s true! Before you toss those leafy greens at the end of beets, give them a good wash and cook them like you would spinach or chard. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Next time you find yourself with greens choices, skip past the romaine and reach for something different. You will discover that different greens vary so much in taste and texture. I hope you will feel inspired to try something new in your salad or savory dishes!

Sister Jean’s Garden is cultivating in AC

erhaps you've heard the phrase, “bloom where you're planted”? Well, Sister Jean’s Garden is in full bloom and producing quite the harvest for the community. The thriving garden is located on the grounds of the former Saint Monica’s Church on North Pennsylvania Avenue, in Atlantic City, now home of the relocated Sister Jean’s Kitchen. Though it is currently closed, Sister Jean’s Kitchen fed the homeless, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, veterans, and low-income families, including children.

At its peak, Sister Jean’s Kitchen served 80,000 to 120,000 meals per year. The kitchen was closed down in February of 2019. While the community and “Friends of Jean Webster” wait for the day when funding, renovations, and city approvals can allow the Kitchen to re-open, nonprofit organizations and volunteers aren’t waiting by with idle hands.

Through a collaboration between the nonprofit organizations C.R.O.P.S., Friends of Jean Webster, and A Work in Progress, Sister Jean’s Garden was started in September of 2019.

until the kitchen can reopen.” When the Kitchen does reopen, produce from Sister Jean’s Garden will be used in meals to feed the hungry. Cookie Till, president of A Work in Progress, (and owner of Steve and Cookie’s by the Bay restaurant) helped, through her nonprofit, to pay for the wood for 12 of the raised beds, shovels, and wheelbarrows, and arranged for the beds to be built and delivered. She also arranged for donations of Eco Topsoil from the ACUA. Vaccaro credits the success of the garden to hard-working fellow volunteers such as Co-President Alicia Newcomb, who utilized her background in nonprofit fundraising to make their C.R.O.P.S. markets eligible to accept SNAP/EBT benefits.

Fourteen raised beds are filled with plants including: green and red leaf lettuce, mint, thyme, basil, Thai basil, parsley, oregano, cilantro, carrots, green beans, strawberries, tomatoes, peppers, snow peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, collard greens, wasabi mustard greens, Swiss chard, kale, watermelon, squash, sunflowers, and pansies. Is anyone else getting hungry? Recently, the way was cleared for sunflowers along the fence – “flowers for peace”. As the group looks ahead to the reopening of Sister Jean’s

Kitchen and continuing to expand the garden, they look forward to their big plans for this site growing alongside big, beautiful, and strong sunflowers.

Sister Jean’s Garden involves the community both in enjoying the produce for free as well as working together in the garden through their weekly “Community Day at Sister Jean’s Garden”.

The first Community Day of the season was held Sunday, June 14. Volunteers weeded, watered, harvested, and planted – all while laughing and learning. As the produce is harvested, it’s hung on the fence along Pennsylvania Avenue for people to take. A wide variety of people participate, from homeless individuals in the area, to those who see it announced on social media, and people just passing by. Youth from the Garden Club of the Atlantic City Boys and Girls Club also volunteer in the garden as well as members of Rev. John Scotland’s Presbyterian Church in Brigantine (Rev. Scotland is the Executive Director of the Friends of Jean Webster). Vaccaro estimates ap-

proximately 25-30 people participated in the latest Community Day. The event is welcome to all and is held on Sundays from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., at the Sister Jean’s Garden at : 108 North Pennsylvania Avenue, Atlantic City. Masks are required!

Sister Jean’s Garden relies on the support of local sponsors and donations, such as a recent sponsorship for $5,000 from offshore wind developer Orsted, and many others who have donated time, money, and resources to the garden. The next Community Day will be held Sunday, June 28. The Humane Society of Ocean City Takes Action During COVID-19

ince 1964, The Humane Society of Ocean City has been serving our community, providing the highest level of compassion and resources for all animals in need. While the COVID-19 health crisis has continued to affect our area, the Humane Society has remained committed to providing service to our local community, with their veterinary clinic and shelter providing top notch care for animals that need a loving, caring home.

In an effort to preserve the health of animals and humans during the pandemic, updated guidelines have been put into place. This includes enhanced cleaning procedures , allowing a small number of volunteers into their facility at any given time, and

an outside water station for people to wash their hands before and after entering the building.

Their Veterinary Clinic also remains open. Those with appointments are asked to wait in their cars until they are called by cell phone, at which point a staff member will walk out and direct you. The shelter also provides Animal Control services, rescuing endangered or injured wildlife and stray animals throughout Ocean City. A limited number of adoptions are being accepting by appointment

From the on-site veterinarians and animal control officers, to the staff who tend to the shelter pets, the Humane Society has been devoted to serving our community, according to Executive Director Bill Hollingsworth. “The whole staff decided to stay and commit themselves for the animals of Ocean City and the surrounding area. They’ve been outstanding through this.”

On May 23rd, the Humane Society hosted a Virtual Campout fundraiser on its Facebook page. This event included special performances

by Ken Shiles & CiBon, Shaun LaBoy, Nancy Malcun and Cosmic Charlie of The Dead Reckoning. Each of the performances were streamed live on social media, while the live “crowd” at Josie Kelly’s and Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall consisted of photos of furry canines and felines.

Phil Bellucci, Operations and Development Director for the Humane Society, is grateful for the outpouring of support. “We’re really appreciative of our local community and the bars and restaurants to take time to let us go in and set this up.”

Also, on the same weekend, Mr. Hollingsworth and Dr. Julie Moberg participated in the Tail of Two Cities bike ride, a 12 mile journey from Tennessee Avenue in Atlantic City to the shelter in Ocean City. In total, $3,500 was raised to support the shelter and their continued services.

The HSOC provides an up-to-date wishlist of required items needed for daily operation, such as cleaning

supplies and wet cat food. Those that wish to make a donation are encouraged to call the shelter or visit their website at hsocnj.org. Monetary donations are also accepted, and for every dollar that is donated, 93 cents goes directly back into shelter programs.

Summertime Gift Giving

ummer is a big time of year for gift giving for me. Birthdays and holidays are special at any time of year, and giving a gift that benefits health can have a lasting impact. It may be especially helpful to someone who wouldn't normally purchase such an item or doesn't know about available options.

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

70 Is The New…Whatever Senior Moments by Charles P. Eberson

I

t has happened. I do not quite know how it happened and in fact, I was taken quite by surprise.

I just turned 70 years old. I was barely comfortable with being “middle aged” when the AARP mailers started arriving but now I am firmly ensconced in life as a “senior citizen.” I do not think any milestone birthdays motivate an assessment of one’s life as the 70th does. Perhaps on the 80th but I’ll have to get back to you on that. Me reaching 70 years of age is not a life which warrants a best selling autobiography or specialty notoriety but there have been some interesting times. My grandfather put my mother, my aunt and me as an infant on a rust bucket of a freighter to sail from England to New York. There were no other means available and “he knew a guy.” I spent the trip in a wooden crate cushioned with blankets for two weeks. As I got a little older, I sailed on the Queen Mary and SS United States. My mother had me in a harness with a leash when we were on deck for

fear of me climbing overboard. My father bought a house in Northeast Philadelphia without my mother seeing it when I was still a youngster. One night she awoke with the house shaking. One look outside the bedroom window revealed a freight train racing by. The house was sitting just a few yards from the tracks. We only lived there a short time.

My mother would later admit that she had visions of me playing on the tracks, something I eventually did when we went back to visit neighbors. We moved to Ventnor when I was 8 years old. Not long after the move, instead of coming right home like I was always told, I left school to meet some friends and walked out in front of a moving car. I guess my mother did not have a leash long enough. After three days in the hospital, I was released only to be grounded when we got home. At 9 years of age we moved to Margate and the years rolled on as did the mishaps; a motorcycle accident leaving me on crutches and a totaled car on the Garden State Parkway from which I miraculously walked

away only to be subjected to my father’s wrath. I have rowed competitively in locations from Florida to Canada and instilled the love of the sport in my son and daughter. I am an award winning and published photographer which has served me well during challenging times. Still, my family enjoys telling of my mishaps, too many to list here, to the point of suggesting we publish a children’s book entitled, “Poor Chuck.”

The book would be packed with lessons for children to make wiser choices than I have made. I have dodged the usual pitfalls that can end a life prematurely but have witnessed friends who have not been so fortunate. Some things that I thought were so important have been replaced by the more meaningful. I am less concerned with what people think

of my opinion and sometimes, to my wife’s chagrin impose it on the unsuspecting with little regard of the consequences. All in all, a few indiscretions aside, I am grateful for the past 70 years.

I have been happily married for 42 years to someone who did not know what she was getting into, I have a wonderful son and daughter and three adorable grandchildren. My wife and I recently concluded a nine week, 9100 mile camping trip throughout Wyoming, Montana and Utah among other locations. The common thread we heard from other travelers of similar age is, “we are doing it while we still can.” So, my message to you my reader, is to do it, whatever it is while you still can.

t's nice to see the slow comeback of farmer's markets in the region just in time for Summer.

They are overflowing with fabulous produce and I am savoring it every single day. I’ve been doing a lot of grilling lately because it’s easy to fire up the grill when we get back from the beach and also because

Corn and Peaches Grilling when it’s hot, the last thing I want to do is turn on the oven. I love this meal because it can be cooked entirely on the grill. Pair it with a simple salad and you have the perfect dinner.

You start by brushing some husked corn and cut up peaches with

oil and putting them on the grill.

After the corn and peaches come off the grill, allow them to cool slightly before removing the corn kernels from the cob and chopping the peaches.

Ingredients

Corn and Peaches

Corn Kernels

▶4 ears of corn, husks removed ▶5 peaches, quartered ▶3 tablespoons grapeseed or other light oil ▶salt

▶¼ cup chopped cilantro ▶2 cups shredded cheddar cheese ▶8 medium flour tortillas

Instructions

Grease grates of grill with oil. Preheat grill to medium heat. Brush oil on corn and peaches. Sprinkle with salt. Add corn to grill first. Let cook for about 10 minutes turning halfway through. Halfway through cooking

corn, add peaches. Turn after a couple of minutes. Remove corn and peaches and let cool slightly. When corn cool enough to handle, cut to remove kernels into a bowl. Chop peaches.

Lower grill heat to medium-low.

Brush outside of 2 tortillas with oil.

On one tortilla add cheese, corn, peaches, cilantro and more cheese.

Top with other tortilla and put on grill. Let cook for about 2 minutes or until you see grill marks. Gently flip using spatula and tongs. Cook on other side for another 2 minutes.

Repeat with remaining tortillas and fillings.

Urban Promise Founder Bruce Main to Speak at Ocean City Tabernacle

T

he Ocean City Tabernacle will again hold outdoor, in-person worship services this Sunday, June 28 at 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM. Social distancing guidelines will be observed as recommended by the CDC. Speaking at both services will be Bruce Main, founder of Urban Promise in Camden, NJ. Having founded Urban Promise, a ministry providing safe, fun, creative places for local youth in under-resourced communities, in 1988, Main brings a wealth of experience and wisdom relevant to today’s social challenges. Joining him will be alumni of the program, sharing their stories of life transformation, as well as several graduate students

from Africa in UP’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program who will provide special music.

Weather permitting, services will be held on the 6th Street side of the grounds with parking available at the back of the property off Asbury Avenue. Bring your own chairs, if you are able.

What I learned in quarantine

D

uring the past seventy-something days we were ordered to stay at home. I would be lying if I say I didn’t experience my fair share of struggles. I would also be lying if I said it was all a struggle. For every time I sat up worrying about money, my future, or the world as a whole, there was an equal opportunity to laugh so hard I cried at something my cat did, something my boyfriend said, or honestly, something silly or downright stupid I had said or done.

It’s a give and take in these uncertain times, however I do feel I have become a bit wiser.

Here’s some of what I’ve learned during this time of utter uncertainty: How to spell - I don’t think I’ve ever had to spell “quarantine”. At first, I tried not to type or write it at all. I couldn’t spell it and more than anything I hated seeing those red squiggly lines that taunt me when I misspell something. I kept referring to it as the “Plague” but that was a

problem when I quickly found out it’s also a deceptively hard word to spell.

I tried referring to it as the “Apocalypse.” I’m sure you can imagine how that went. So, I learned how to spell all three.

How to clean – It takes me about five hours to wash and dry five loads of laundry. Oddly, it takes over double that time to put the laundry away. I have a problem. I love clean clothes and a clean house, but I hate to clean.

Thomas Jefferson said, “Never put off tomorrow, what you can do today.” Two million memes say “Never put off something for tomorrow that you can do the day after tomorrow.”

I don’t know who’s right. I even procrastinate about things I want to do.

How to measure – Apparently measuring six feet is a pretty hard task without a tape measure. So hard in fact that cities all over the country felt the need to map out six feet on tee shirts, floors and on banners waving in the breeze. That’s just the tip of the hat. So far, I have seen the following things that are six feet just to show the distance you should maintain while social distancing: ● 1 Refrigerator ● 1 Picnic Table ● 2 Shopping carts ● 12 Hot Dogs ● 16 Rolls of toilet paper ● 18 Crawfish ● Park bench ● 1 Horse (or two ponies) How my cat feels: I’d stare out the window all day too if my house was the only thing I ever saw. I feel guilty about not letting my cat go outside because I know he’d love it.

He’d run, chase bugs and birds, and probably eat a lot of grass. He’d love it so much that every now and then he’d put a squirrel, a mouse or a dead bird on the porch just to say thanks.

However, I can’t control him or the cars on our busy street. I can’t control any disease he may come across or injuries he might get. I can’t imagine what it’s like for him to be quarantined (see, I spelled it right!) for life.

I also can’t imagine what it’s like to have someone pick up what I leave in the bathroom… It’s for your own good, Kitten.

How negative people suck: Some people are the worst, the absolute worst! For example, people who think

masks and gloves somehow biodegrade on sidewalks or in supermarket parking lots (FYI they do not). They lose points for littering them but get points for wearing them.

How positive people rock: Some people are the best, the absolute best! For example, people who make masks for everyone they know, cook for others, donate their time and/or money, or call people who live alone.

As you can see, there are so many more positives than negatives… you just have to look a little harder.

Maybe I didn’t come out of this a newly changed woman. But what I can say is that I’m a little older, a little wiser and maybe a little more patient with myself and others. I think as a society we’re going to come out of this a bit kinder and more compassionate. This hasn’t been easy on any of us but nothing is a waste of time if you learned something. It’s what I can hope for anyway.

Resistance bands, a very versatile piece of workout equipment Shore Fit

eight-bearing exercise is important for your health, particularly for muscle and bone development. So important for women as we age to incorporate strength training and if dumbbells or kettlebells aren’t your thing, these may be just what you need. Resistance bands provide muscle-building tension, and can be used almost anywhere. These bands offer safe and effective workouts, and are often recommended by physical therapists for rehabilitation purposes. My own mom uses them for therapy to help with her Neuropathy. She also uses them for her upper body as well.

Some are flat in composition, while others consist of a tubular band that's often surrounded by a protective material.

The latter option comes with handles for gripping, while the former type lacks hand grips.

Depending on your specific needs, you can use a band that offers tensions anywhere from 15 lbs. to over 200 lbs. of resistance. Many companies color code their bands to easily distinguish between levels of tension. They even offer fabric ones that won’t roll or break. They also come in super cute colors.

Like free weights or weight machines, resistance bands provide a force against which your muscles must work. This action causes muscles to contract, which stimulates bone as well as muscle growth. When you stretch the band the tension increases. Bands can, in some ways, be superior to free weights. Using resistance bands is one of the safest methods to increase bone strength and help prevent osteoporosis. This is

so important for us as we age, we must fight the good fight and bands are less intimidating than free weights or machines.

Exercise bands are compact, lightweight and can be used in your home, office or hotel room. There is no excuse for when you go on vacation because they literally take up zero space and can fit in a purse, carry-on or backpack.

They are often used during physical therapy sessions and exercise classes because they allow the therapist or instructor to provide different levels of resistance in a variety of exercises. They are also readily available, just grab and go. I sometimes run around the group exercise room and hand them out very quickly which is time efficient when you’re conducting a class. No need to waste time going to get those free weights. At times, you may need a lighter one such as green for a shoulder exercise but a blue or red that provides more resistance for a leg exercise. It can be modified to suit your specific needs because everyone’s fitness level is different.

You can perform only a limited amount of movements with free weights or weight machines. Bands provide resistance to just about any motion, and can be especially helpful for athletes. I’ve watched high school athletes actually incorporate bands in their training which is awesome because I feel like bands get discounted as an effective training method.

Although resistance bands allow

portability and the freedom of movement, these two benefits can also be potential stumbling blocks.

Certain exercises and motions require only that you stand on the band, but for other motions you may need to attach the band to a strong, stable surface at a certain height. This has proven to be challenging for myself as well and then there are people who fear that the band may split or break. This is the very reason that I don’t rely solo on one piece of equipment for an effective workout.

I like to bring out all the toys as I say!!

When I teach my classes it sometimes looks like an adult playground which I love and so do the participants. It switches it up and makes it interesting and has them guessing.

Both the flat bands and the tubular bands with handles are easy to store and carry. The handles make certain exercises, like bicep curls and chest flys, easier. Typically, you attach the middle of the band to a stationary object, stand on it with your feet or have it placed on the bottoms of your feet for a seated row and floor exercises. You can get very creative with bands. If you’ve been reading my articles, then you know how certain I am that it is necessary to switch up your workout routine to see results. Bands are a great way to do just that and so easy to carry with you if you’re away from home. Try switching up your routine with one round of bicep curls with a band and then another round of curls using dumbbells or using both at the same time. I promise you, that it will really make a difference in your workout routine!

ummer is officially here! By the time you read this, the official first day of summer (June 20th) will have come & gone. Governor Murphy is starting to lay out plans for reopening the casinos & inside seating at restaurants. I’m most excited to finally get a haircut!

Since I last wrote, NASCAR has had an unbelievable “come together� moment in support of one driver. The PGA Tour had another exciting event, this time in Hilton Head, South Carolina. As I type this late at night on Monday 6-22, it appears that Major League Baseball might FINALLY have an agreement to play ball. Meanwhile, the NHL seems to be “pumping the brakes� a little bit after some players have tested positive for COVID-19.

On the local front, a league that’s over a century old is going to come back for a shortened season. Which is better than NO season.

From the entertainment world, one of the best shows in all of tele-

vision has returned on Father’s Day. And, I finally watched a popular movie from 2013 that I had never seen. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: � I’ll lead with NASCAR this week as it was another historic week on and off the track. On Sunday night, word got out that a noose was found hanging in the garage of Bubba Wallace, the only black driver on the big circuit. It was later determined that the rope has been the garage since last year. No one could have known Wallace would be assigned that garage back then. "I think we'll gladly take a little embarrassment over what the alternatives coul;d have been" Wallace stated later. He continued, "It's been an emotional few days. I want to say how relieved I am that the investigation revealed that this wasn't what I feared it was." Keep in mind, NASCAR is still fresh off banning the Confederate flag at all events and some yahoo decided to rent a banner plane and fly one over Talladega on Sunday with a “DEFUND NASCAR� message. The

Ryan Blaney won the race in a photo finish, but the support for Wallace will be remembered the most from the race. 82-year-old Richard Petty even showed up to stand with Wallace for the national anthem and show his support. “The King� issued a scathing rebuke after the noose was found, calling for the “sick person� to be expelled from NASCAR forever, a move that NASCAR president Steve Phelps insists will happen when the person is caught.

In golf, a three-hour storm delay almost kept the RBC Heritage from finishing on Father’s Day, but they were able to get it in, and Webb Simpson emerged from a crowded leaderboard to win with an eye-popping score of 22-under.

Simpson carded five birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine for a 7-under 64 to win by one shot over Abraham Ancer. Normally on Father’s Day, they play the U.S. Open, but this year, that event has been moved to September because of COVID-19. Simpson won the U.S. Open on Father’s Day in 2012, and now repeats as a Father’s Day winner at Harbour Town. Now it’s on to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship!

There was a scary moment at the RBC Heritage as golfer Nick Watney tested positive for the coronavirus and immediately withdrew from the field. 11 people, including golfers & caddies who had been in close contact with him were also tested. Under the new PGA Tour guidelines, any player with a positive test must immediately withdraw.

course the pros played at Harbour Town. The course is located in the Sea Pines community in Hilton Head, and I had a girlfriend at the time, whose mother sold houses there. She told the pro shop that I was a big shot client looking at million dollar homes, and would they “comp� me?

They waived my greens fees, so I only paid $20, the cart fee, to play one of the top ranked courses every year by PGA professionals! I did not shoot a 64, like Simpson. I did however have two birdies as I recall!

Now to baseball as the last time I wrote, things looked bleak for MLB. As I write this, Major League Baseball plans to hold a 60-game season that begins around July 24 but first needs players to sign off on a health-and-safety protocol and pledge to arrive at home stadiums by July 1st to prepare for the season. This is GREAT news,but I won’t believe it until I actually see Major League ballplayers in stadiums and getting ready for an actual game.

Part of my skepticism comes from the fact that there were several recent outbreaks at training facilities in Florida and Arizona and in major league cities last week. All MLB training camps were temporarily closed after multiple teams reported positive tests. However, that’s where the home cities proposal comes into play, and again, we shall see.

Florida & Arizona are two of the places that have seen a spike in COVID-19 cases in the last week or so, and the NHL had to “pause� after three players out of 18 who were participating in Tampa’s Phase 2 training tested positive for COVID-19. For now, the plans to restart the NHL are still moving ahead, but it is troubling that of the more than 200 players who have been tested for coronavirus since Phase 2 began, 11 of them have tested positive.

The last hockey tidbit is about the hub cities for the return. The Columbus Blue Jackets were told that Columbus will NOT be one of the NHL's hub cities, which means Las Vegas is now considered the U.S. favorite to host NHL playoff games, unless two Canadian cities are selected. Canada's federal government last week said it would allow the league to quarantine

internally, making Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton realistic possibilities -- if not the front-runners. The NHL has said it will select two hub cities -- one for the Eastern Conference playoffs and one for the Western Conference.

The Stanley Cup Final or "final four" would likely be in one of the two cities.

The only Eagles news to report is off the field news, as Eagles Tight End Dallas Goedert got sucker punched in a bar in Aberdeen, South Dakota over the weekend. Thankfully, police were able to identify the assailant and arrested him for the act. Police were called to the Zoo Bar in Aberdeen on a report "of people busting glasses and have busted heads," per the Mitchell Republic, citing radio transmissions from the scene asking to run the identifications of Goedert, 25, and two other men. Thankfully Goedert is okay and probably embarrassed by the whole affair. Goedert went to high school in South Dakota and attended South Dakota State.

On the local front, I’m pleased to report that the Atlantic County Baseball League released a shortened schedule for this season.

games in the ACBL, but because of COVID-19, there was fear there wouldn’t be a 135th season.

League President Yogi Hiltner has released a tentative schedule with games beginning on July 6th. Each of the eight teams will play 12 regular-season games in four weeks, before a round-robin playoff format takes them through July 31st.

According to Hiltner, the league has been held every year except for the years of World War I and World War II. I’m stoked to see these guys get a chance to play and can’t wait to support them!

I’ll close with a few items from entertainment as “Yellowstone” returned for season 3 on the Paramount Network on Father’s Day. If you haven’t seen it, you’re really missing out on an excellent drama.

I’ve been watching since the beginning, but I’m sure you can catch up “On Demand” if needed. I have to admit, the writing & acting is great, but the on-location shots in Montana are a HUGE part of the show as well.

Finally, how did I miss “White House Down” when it first came out in 2013? I generally don’t like to watch a feature length film on TV if I have to wait for commercials, but I got hooked into the action-thriller on AMC the other night and it was pretty good.

I’m probably going to check out “Olympus Has Fallen” after I finish writing this so I can do my own comparison. Sort of like my own “Pepsi Challenge”...remember that?

Gardening Herbs

ow that the weather has finally heated up, I love to think about summer foods like bruschetta, tomatoes, and pasta salad.

What makes these dishes really stand out are fresh herbs. Want to look like a gourmet chef? Just sprinkle some fresh herbs over your entree and your guests will be impressed.

Their praise will not be without reason though; herbs can really improve any savory dish.

Basil is one of my all time favorite herbs to grow. Unfortunately, it does not survive outside in the cold, so plant it after the weather warms up. I use it constantly, so I keep a plentiful

supply by planting several plants. Alternate which ones you pick from; that way you give them a chance to regrow new leaves. Basil will actually grow little flowers if you don’t keep it trimmed; you can eat the flowers and they taste fine. But generally, I try to keep the plant from maturing that much since the newer leaves taste much fresher.

Another fun annual herb to grow is nasturtium. Sow the seeds directly into the soil (after soaking them in water overnight). When the plants mature, you will have bold yellow, orange, and red flowers. Both the flowers and leaves have a peppery taste. Picture a beautiful salad topped with these bright edible flowers. What a treat for the eyes and taste buds!

Some herbs, such as rosemary and thyme, can survive our cold winters. Throw some rosemary in with lemon, chicken, and garlic—yum!

You can even make a cheese board look more elegant just by adding a sprig of rosemary. Use rosemary with roasted red potatoes, kosher salt, and extra vir-

gin olive oil, and you’ll understand why they call them “red bliss”. Thyme is also very hardy in the cold and comes in many varieties. My favorite is lemon thyme; when you rub it between your hands, it actually gives off a lemony scent. Add thyme to soups, stews, chicken, and fish. Thyme produces lovely little flowers that you can use as a garnish.

We can’t forget about parsley, but it likes to be special.

It’s not an annual or perennial but a biennial. It comes back after the first year, but mainly to produce seed. You can harvest these seeds for the following year. But I would just buy a new plant each year, so you have a constant supply. You can improve the look and taste of many dishes just by sprinkling some on top. Parsley can be curly leaf or Italian (flat leaf). I always use flat leaf—it’s easier to cut and in my opinion has a less bitter taste.

Now we come to mint. My first encounter with mint had nothing to

Because it’s a member of the mint family, from my little tiny plant years ago, I now have loads of lemon balm to share. In fact, this spring I threw a baby shower for my friend and gave little containers of lemon balm to the guests as favors. Everyone thought I was being generous, but what they didn’t realize was that I had the stuff coming out of my ears and I wanted to get rid of some of it!

Yes, mint can be invasive, so you will want to contain it, which can be easily done. Simply keep it in pots, so that the roots can’t spread to make new plants.

You can even bury these pots in the soil and trim any leaves that spill over the

do with eating it. When I started my current garden, oh so many years ago, I was attracted to the beautiful flowers of catmint (not to be confused with catnip).

These flowers have the billowy look and color of lavender.

Through the years, I have struggled with finicky lavender, but catmint is so easy to grow. I love the look of catmint bordering my red Knock Out® roses.

When they are both in bloom, I cut them together and make beautiful bouquets.

Catmint does so well because it is, well, a mint. If you have any experience with mint, you know it can go crazy.

Once, I brought a centerpiece home from a dinner event, and found a new plant that I was not familiar with, called lemon balm. As with most mints, you can

edge of their container. Don’t be afraid to grow mint; just keep an eye on it and don’t let it get carried away. Mint has so many great attributes and uses—it’s worth the effort.

Go out and buy yourself some fresh herbs this week and try them on your favorite savory foods—they will definitely enhance any dish. Nurseries carry so many fun varieties such as pineapple sage, purple basil, and chocolate mint.

Galloway Green Farmers Market Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

he Galloway Green Farmer’s Market is set to return Thursday, June 25th bringing all the best of everything local to Smithville every Thursday until September 3rd. Although the setup will be slightly different this year, visitors can still expect to shop a wide variety of fresh produce, seafood, prepared foods and so much more. Back by popular demand, this will be the 4th year of the market and will attract people from all over wanting to shop for fruits and vegetables grown in their own back yard.

For many, quarantine has been an opportunity to get into shape and pursue a healthy lifestyle. If you are one of those people, then you will be pleased to know there will be several vendors selling organic vegetables including Sam Mento Farms who will be selling their famous farm fresh blueberries. Early Tourist Attractions in AC

I

n the 1890's, Atlantic City offered a flume ride much like the extreme thrill rides of today. "Shooting The Chutes" was a major attraction on the boardwalk. Riders were pulled up a long incline in an open car, then were transfered to a flat-bottomed boat. The boat raced down a track to a large pool, where it bounced and skimmed across the water.

popular ride in the late 1800's was the bicycle railway. This one in 1884 was located at Mississippi and Missouri Avenues.

There were several styles of these rides located throughout Atlantic City.

On Tour with Dean Randazzo A tale of a surfers dream...

T

he year was 2000. Y2K, the apocalypse, and hype of the world coming to an end was upon us. There was a big change, a huge shift, the new millennium was upon us. Nias O’neill Deep Jungle Open June 2000. Nias is a small remote Island in North Sumatra, in Indonesia, an Isolated Island chain which dates back to pre-history.

Historians and archaeologists have cited the local culture as one of the few remaining Megalithic cultures in existence today.

Nias is known for war dances and stone jumping; a manhood ritual that sees young men leaping over 2 meter stone towers cove re d with spikes that can lead to their death.

A surfers dream: the lure of the perfect wave, the adventure and journey to get there, and to find a secret or unfound perfect wave that no one else has ever surfed. Nias was this place! I first saw this place in magazines, and always dreamed of surfing there.

Travel time is about 48 hours, and it took every form of transportation - planes, trains, boats and donkeys - to get there! Once in Sumatra, the

Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) had two chartered planes for all the competitors. “Sketchy” would be an understatement when observing these planes! We loaded up the planes with our boards, and

were ready for take off when I overheard one of the Australians pointing out the guys on the tarmac with fire extinguishers. Not a good sign for this dual prop airplane with duct tape everywhere! We made it there, but the other plane had to turn back and make an emergency landing because one of the props stopped working after take off. Glad I wasn’t on that plane! After arriving in Nias there is a 5 hour van ride across the Island.

No one told us that there are still headhunters on Nias until we got stopped in the middle of the road by a bunch of tribesman waving machetes!

I just wanted to go surfing, not have my head shrunk and put into a bottle! No worries: the local escort talked our way through. If that wasn’t enough, after finally arriving that night, we were hit with a 7.4 earthquake and tsunami warning!

My first glimpse of Nias that first morning was of a beautiful blue ocean lagoon, thick, plush, green, Malaria infested jungles, and wildly bent palm trees, with huge coconuts, lining the white sandy beaches. The locals were friendly and curious, as they hadn’t seen many foreigners. My first surf was amazing! Sitting on the water I could see clear to the bottom, and tropical fish everywhere. It was like floating on top of an aquarium.

The contest was held for the preliminary rounds at the famous right hand point break at Lungundi Bay. When it’s small the wave peels perfectly along the inside reef.

When it gets over 6 feet it breaks on the outer part of the reef and barrels big time! The waves were small for the preliminary rounds, but super fun, and very rip-able.

After 6 days of small surf, and the contest being on hold, in hopes of better surf, the locals were ready to take things to a higher power with a local tradition of having a sacrificial ceremony. I thought they were kidding when they said they would hang a cat, and throw it out to sea, to send a swell our way. That evening, we were hanging out on our porch, overlooking the contest break, when we spotted a cat with a noose tied around its neck floating in the channel. A few minutes later we saw

a chicken, with its head chopped off, also floating out to sea! This is a local tradition and, although very cruel, it is part of their culture. I guess the locals didn’t want to take any chances with just one form of sacrifice. This may sound crazy, but just before the sun was setting that evening we saw the biggest sets of the day coming in!

Coincidence? Or was there something to this ancient ritual? We were all laughing and making jokes about it actually working. In our culture, surfers have been known to sacrifice a surfboard in hopes of a swell to come.

As the sun rose the next day, finals day, the swell was absolutely pumping!

Ancient energy?

Af ter a ssessing the conditions, the contest organizers decided to move the contest venue up the beach and around the corner, to a secret spot never surfed at this size before. It was a rare swell angle that was hitting this reef just right.

It was a dangerous wave over shallow, razor sharp reef, with only a tiny keyhole to paddle out through, surrounded by dry reef. The wave had an end section that was named “the death section” because, if you didn’t make it past you were facing dry rock and potential serious injury or death! The surf was more than I had imagined! Solid 8-10 foot spitting barrels, and breaking boards like toothpicks! On the beach the locals were hooting for every

wave, as they had never seen anyone surf this wave at this size before. It was finals day. Only sixteen competitors left, and fortunately I was one of them. Everyone was charging and pulling in deep, in hopes of grabbing the big World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings points. The surf was so good that even the competitors were hooting at each other during their heats! As the heats went on, the Australians were dominating: guys like Joel Parkinson, Chris Davidson,

Dean Morrison, Sasha Stocker, and Lee Winkler to name a few. In my semi final heat I took the hardest hit into the reef in my life! I dropped into a huge set wave, was pulled in deep, and got clipped. I came up after being ragdolled underwater, to find half of a surfboard, and the next wave a

double up foamy beast breaking right in front of me! It pounded me down, took me back up, and back over, slamming my back, arm, and head straight into the razor sharp bottom. When I came up my back was a bloody mess, and I was seeing stars! Luckily there were only a few minutes left in the heat, and I had enough points to advance to the finals. I was in so much pain, I could barely move my arm, and I didn’t think I could finish the contest.

My back looked like hamburger meat.

I sat in the jungle alone and motivated myself to paddle back out there. After all, I had come so far, traveling across the planet, and now the final of a big

event. I was mentally and physically shaken up, but I paddled back out for the final. Sasha Stocker was ripping, pulling in deep, and getting spit out everywhere. He took the big win, Lee winkler finished 2nd, I came in 3rd, and Joel Parkinson 4th.

Finding the perfect wave will never happen. We always seek more.

Recalling the AC Surf and The Sandcastle

backdrop of the Atlantic City skyline made any evening perfect. Surf Stadium was the place to see professional baseball in South Jersey.

hen you see a lifeguard boat on the beaches this summer, you'll know to respect them. They may be saving someone's life.

John and Sam VanDuyne, born and raised in Ventnor NJ were the original boat builders, a business that came in a roundabout way. In the 1950’s, they spent much of their time as duck hunters. They used to go out on the back bays to hunt for ducks on boats made out of cedarwood. It wasn’t long before the idea of coming home with wet bottoms from the leaky cedarwood became a problem that they’d soon find a solution for. John and Sam set out to make a new boat that would keep their bottoms dry while they enjoyed the sport of duck hunting.

Biggest Local Catches NJ record-setting fish reeled in

ew Jersey Fish and W i l d l i fe keeps records for 59 species of saltwater fish. Currently three of those species --the bull shark, the porbeagle shark and the whiting (silver hake) --- have vacant records because no recorded catch has met the minimum weight requirements. Here are a few local record-breaking catches.

Sheepshead William Catino of Ventnor was fishing off of a dock in Longport in October 2014 when he landed a 19-pound, 3-ounce sheepshead. The monstrous fish broke the previous state record by two pounds.

Funding the American Revolution Shore Collectibles

icking a fight with Britain over our independence was like pocking a stick in the eye of a giant. Britain had a large standing army and navy plus more money, which was the chief challenge to the colonists. The national government, the Continental Congress did not possess the ability to levy taxes under the Articles of Confederation. And the state governments, although with the ability were reluctant to levy taxes as this was one of the complaints about Britain, their taxes. The Revolutionar y government resorted to printing paper money, known as Continental currency. By 1780, the value of this paper money declined to the extent the $241,550,000 which had been issued up to that point was virtually worthless and ceased to circulate.

Loans of hard money were difficult to come by, and some countries such as Holland, Spain and France came through to varying degrees. This was necessary for making payment to foreign merchants who would not accept Continental or state issued paper. Other funding came from domestic loans and promissory notes which were more secure that the paper currency.

By 1790, long after the war’s end, the federal government owed $40 in domestic debt and $12 million in foreign debt. The states owed an additional debt of $25 million, bringing the United States total Revolutionary War debt to a huge sum of $77 million.

Who paid these debts, the states or Congress? This became the central issue between the states and central government. In a struggle for power, the states wanted to assume the federal debt and Congress wanted to assume the states debt. The winner

of this struggle would be granted the power of taxation. Proponents of a strong central government wanted Congress to assume the debts as a way of insuring a strong union. Those opposing the central governments assumption of the debt wanted a weak central government.

The federal government derived the authority to levy taxes through the 1787 draft of the Constitution.

And Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury succeeded in the federal government’s assumption of the state debt, giving more power to the central government.

Hamilton’s plan was for all holder of debt certificates were to be paid full value in specie(gold/silver), which was controversial because these cer-

tificates were trading on the open market at less than full value. Under Hamilton’s plan, old debt certificates would be exchanged for newly issued bonds and public revenue was pledged for paying interest on the debt. Interest was paid until the face value of the note was redeemed.

Hamilton’s plan was approved in 1790, but it took several years for the states’ debts to be settled. It actually took until 1837 for the federal government to pay off the majority of the debt.

Some of the state’s debts were to pay merchants for purchases of goods or for the back pay due soldiers were involved in our struggle for independence. The fact that they did not receive final payment in some cases until 1795 shows a degree of patience.

The note shown below was issued by the state of Connecticut to acknowledge indebtedness to the individual listed on the note. The wavy cut on the left side was used to match the note to the book from which it was cut. Each cut was different, so a match meant it was an authentic note. The hole in the middle indicates the note was redeemed – paid in full.

ear Angela Burton, Growing up in Atlantic City, I heard your name early in my life and often.

Well before I knew that I wanted to work in the entertainment industry, I would see your name on flyers for The Club Harlem. I would hear your name announced on our old black radio station WUSS. As I got older, I began to run into people that had played and toured with you. Great people who are special to me like Bruce Abrams and Will White and many more great musicians.

Then somewhere along the way we got to work together. I don’t even remember where it was. I know that since we first worked together you have embraced me like family.

I am writing this long overdue note to say thank you. And not just to thank you for me but for every entertainer in my generation or younger.

We both know that I will never be on stage singing a note of jazz or R&B. However, when I do take a stage and give the crowd every cool vibe I have while sharing a poem...I am often trying to channel one of your amazing performances at The Yacht Club. I can remember watching and hearing you with your band and feeling almost like I was the only person in the room. I remember thinking…

“that’s how I have to be when I am sharing a poem.” I have seen you make a park full of hundreds of people dance...no matter what was bothering them before they arrived...you had them on their feet smiling, laughing and dancing. I remember thinking “that’s what I have to do when I DJ.” I have to spin these songs in such a way if they were crying the blues before they arrived...it doesn't matter because they are going to rush to the dance floor while I’m playing.

You are a world class, one of a kind, trailblazer for Atlantic City entertainment... and YOU ARE A EVEN , SWEETER & KINDER ...PERSON on top of that. I am still struggling to be half the entertainer you are but I hope I am coming closer to being as kind as you are.

I am glad that I am sharing these thoughts with you while we are both in good health.

So once more. Thanks for the doors you’ve opened, the example you’ve set and for the way you have made all of my artists and myself feel like family. I may not have expressed every thing as wonderful as you always make me feel. So please remember this...I APPRECIATE, RESPECT AND LOVE YOU VERY MUCH. I can’t wait to be on stage with you again.
