Showboat owner makes splash with $100million water park plan

art Blatstein has proposed a $100 million water park next to his Showboat Hotel property. The water park will be built on an existing lot between Showboat and Ocean Casino Resort, just off the Boardwalk. The aquatic-amusement experience will include water slides, pools and a lazy river, in addition to food and beverage outlets, party rooms, locker rooms, retail stands. The park is planned to be a year-round facility with a retractable glass-pane roof covering the entire park. Blatstein believes the proposed 100,000-square-foot water park and entertainment center will attract more families to Atlantic City. “This is, basically, a family resort with a hotel anchored by an indoor water park, and

“We can’t survive on casinos alone anymore. We have to diversify,” Small said. “Our weak spot, our Achilles’ heel, our sore spot, is a lack of family attractions.” The project also calls for a renovation to Showboat’s existing Premier Light Tower for water park guests and the construction of a family entertainment center including arcade games, mini golf and laser tag. The CRDA Board of Directors is expected to consider the application requests at its July 21 public meeting.

From the Editor

t's true that absence makes the heart grow fonder. As soon as outdoor dining opened up on the 15th, Bob and I practically ran to one of our favorite restaurants. We were thrilled to enjoy eating out again; being served by a waiter/ waitress and eating at a table with real plates and silverware felt like a slice of Heaven. With more and more things opening up I am especially looking forward to indulging in many simple pleasures I once took for granted, like getting a haircut and going to the gym. As we are all adjusting to our "new normal," pause to enjoy the "little things" that it turns out aren't so little: walking into a store, eating out, and most of all spending time with friends. Exhibit at Great Bay Gallery

G

reat Bay Gallery 829 Bay Avenue, Somers Point, NJ opens its 27th season with the tribute exhibit, GARY BRANIN RETROSPECTIVE: REALISM TO ABSTRACT-70’S-90’S. The carefully selected oils were chosen from a large number of works that Gary painted throughout his artistic career. The centerpiece of the exhibit is the expansive work entitled Sunrise Over Ventnor Pier. The exhibit opens on July 1 and continues through July 25. Great Bay Gallery will host a reception open to the public on two successive evenings, July 9 and 10 from 5-7pm

Initially a teacher, Gary was mainly a traveler of the world, touring on his 15 speed bicycle, accompanied by Judy, his wife, but most often alone, biking across country, in New England and into Canada as well Ireland and Great Britain. Gary frequently was spotted riding along our local highways, byways and mainland streets recognizable in his iconic safari hat.

Throughout his life, Gary amassed an extensive portfolio of landscapes, portraits and abstract pieces predominately in oils, representing local places like Birch Grove Park and Batsto Historic Site; broad scenic landscapes; a sunrise over the ocean and nature up close and personal. At times Gary turned to the landscapes of his mind to produce his intriguing abstracts that defy titles. Originally from Camden County, NJ, Gary had made his home in Linwood since 1973. On July 26, 2019, Gary suddenly passed away in his sleep. He leaves behind a large collection of work that will hopefully outlive him by many generations. Gallery hours are Wed thru Sat. 12-7pm; Sunday 1-5pm. Visitors will be asked to observe the requirements of social distancing.

The Story of a 20 foot Raisin and his ice cream cone

I

f you've ever driven down Zion Road in Egg HarborTownship, you've probably wondered why there is a 20-Foot-Tall California Raisin next to Little's Dairy Bar. And how did it ever get there? As a pop culture phenomenon, the California Raisins peaked in the late 1980s. One of their fans lived in Wildwood, New Jersey and built a 20-foot-tall Raisin for his miniature golf course on the Wildwood boardwalk. Years later, the golf course went out of business in the early 1990s. The mini-golf Raisin, however, had a fan in Richard Little, owner of the popular Little's Dairy Bar. He rescued the wrinkly icon, trucked it up the coast and several miles inland, and stood it in the front yard of his house, next to his ice cream stand that he had opened in 1973. People seemed not to mind that it had nothing to do with ice cream. In fact, customers gradually stopped referring to the business as Little's Dairy Bar. They called it (and still do) "The Raisin." Laura and Joseph Laport took over the business in 1999. They cre-

ated the ice cream cone the Raisin is now seen holding. "He is sturdy, but he needs a makeover. We would like to paint him and put a baseball cap on him with an

L for Little's," shared owner, Laura Laport. "Little's is a small family business. With my 3 daughters working there through high school and college, I always knew where they were." Laport chuckled. Laura's daughters all went into education and still spend their summers working

there, along with about nine other employees. Laura still works a shift or two but is mostly enjoying her four grandchildren now ranging from 3-7 years old. Little's is still going strong after all these years. On any summer evening you will see steady lines at Little's Dairy Bar or "The Raisin."

Graduating in Quarantine: The Class of 2020

H

ow does one even begin to write a letter of encouragement to a group of people that have had their senior year turned inside out and upside down in ways that were unimaginable just six months ago. No one could have anticipated witnessing the entire world practically shutting down in just a matter of days. One minute you’re on spring break and the next you’re being told to “stay at home,” and “socially distance yourself” from your classmates, friends and neighbors. Next, you learn that you won’t be going back to school but instead you will finish your senior year via online instruction. Spring sports are cancelled. Social events are cancelled or postponed. Graduation ceremonies are up in the air higher than mortar boards thrown

by an exuberant senior. What a roller coaster you have been forced to ride. But ride it out you have. You have carried on and you have persevered. You have made it to the end of your senior year even during these unprecedented times. Oh, the stories you will have to share with your future children as they prepare for their senior year. Use this experience to help you navigate the roller coasters of life that are yet to come. When you are blindsided by life events, look back on these days and remember that even the worst situations are usually temporary and that they too will pass. Have courage and press on, just as you have done the last two months. Remember you are a part of a special group of people. You are the Class of 2020 and you are make us proud! Congratulations to each of you.

Cruising for Al Fresco Dining Options in the Region By Marc Berman

D

ining restrictions in New Jersey have been loosened up a bit as of June 15th, with the addition of Al Fresco (Open Air) Dining. Restaurants can now serve customers while keeping social limitations in play, tables 6 feet apart and masks suggested while entering and exiting. I took a drive around Ocean City, Somers Point, Ventnor and Atlantic City to view some of the configurations for outdoor dining, beginning at 6am in Atlantic City at the Tennessee Ave Beer Hall. At 6am they cut a ribbon and the first two patrons entered and started with a beer which was the first pour

at the beer hall since mid March and today could have been the first pour in the state.

I drove to Ventnor where Annette's on Dorset Ave had tables and umbrellas set up in their parking lot. After a short drive over the Ocean City bridge, we saw Augie's Omelette and Waffle House and Jon and Patty's, both offering outdoor dining. Continuing our drive around a very busy Ocean City, we

came across,Spadafora's Seafood, which also had outdoor seating. We then swung by Ready's with seating for customers on the side of the building. Back over the Ocean City Bridge to Somers Point which also has its share of traffic we stopped by a favorite, Fitzpatrick's Deli and Steakhouse, who have taken a large part of the parking lot for seating. Don't worry, they have additional parking across the street. Sal's Cafe had tables set and ready in front of their restaurant and Gregory's Restaurant and Bar also had tables alongside their restaurant. Back to Atlantic City and we found

that Vagabond has outdoor seating and an entirely new outdoor area to chill, eat and imbibe. Enjoy the relaxed limitations and continue to use common sense, wear a mask, stay six feet apart and if you are not comfortable going out, stay home and order in. Stay Safe, Stay Healthy, Stay Sane. Twelve Years of Our Children Making Change Kids give back to the community in a different way

Vegging at the Shore By Marci Lutsky

I

n years past, June has signified the kickoff of one of the most enriching and powerful programs for children at the Jersey Shore and in different parts of the country. As the summer approached this year Laura Dulac, President and Founder of Our Children Making Change, faced some serious decisions about the program. Would it be possible to run a modified program in which kids performed chores to raise money for local non-profits? After consulting with her team leaders and much deliberation, she made an important decision that the program would indeed continue this summer, but look very differently to adjust to unprecedented times. Typically participants in Our Chil-

dren Making Change help select several local non-profits to fundraise for and over the course of the summer, are asked to each raise $100 for those organizations. For many reasons, it seemed like that would be unreasonable to ask of kids right now. Instead, this summer kids are being asked to perform twelve acts of kindness, with twelve signifying the number of years the program has been operating. The kickoff to the program took place on Saturday, June 13th with drive-by visits to several nursing homes in Galloway to thank healthcare workers for their tireless work and to bring smiles to the faces of residents. Kids were asked to decorate their cars in addition to making cards and baked goods for the staff. At 9:45 am, over 50 cars lined up at Stockton University and then proceeded to drive by nursing homes. There was so much gratitude from the staff and residents for creating an aura of love and appreciation. Any parent of young children can tell you how the past few months of canceled in-person learning and activities has impacted their lives. With many summer plans canceled or

TAKE OUT SERVICE

modified, it’s important for kids to feel a sense of connection to the community by helping others. For the rest of the summer kids will be asked to keep up momentum from the kickoff by spreading goodness. Other suggested acts of kindness are to make a card for someone, bake and deliver cookies, offer to dog walk, do yard work for a neighbor, make and donate masks, make and donate nosew blankets, make jewelry or crafts for a nursing home, spotlight a local hero, leave notes or painted rocks with messages around town, make a phone call to someone living alone, share some smiles on a Zoom call and make birthday or activity bags for

pediatric wards or food banks. Every summer I marvel at the impact of the kids’ philanthropic ventures. I’m grateful that the show must go on this summer and that our kids are still engaged in civic responsibility. The world needs goodness right now and who better to spread that goodness than kids? Ocean City Paddles Out for Unity By Tonya Smith

O

n the 7th Street Beach in Ocean City, over 100 surfers came out for Paddle Out For Unity Sunday, June 7th. The gathering was a community wide event in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. Flowers were handed out while Marshall Young, a local black business owner (Small Axe Design) and surfer, told

Kristina and Marshall Young

the crowd gathered about his experiences in the world as a global citizen that just happens to be black. While his overall message was to push forward and never look back, he drove home the idea that we all are one and that the

only way to survive is by loving and respecting one another. After a moment of reflection while looking up to the sky, the surfers went out into the water and performed a traditional Hawaiian Paddle-Out for George Floyd. With flowers in teeth, the surfers formed a circle at the end of the jetty on 7th Street. They held hands, a few words were said, the flowers were thrown in the circle and then the beautiful crowd splashed in

Marshall Young, owner of Peace of Wood and Small Axe Design, along with his wife Kristina Young, initiated and organized the Paddle Out for Unity

celebration of another soul that was heading to his resting place. Marshall and his wife, Kristina Young are the owners of Peace of Wood, an art studio located at 1112 Asbury Avenue in Ocean City.

ess time in the gym doesn't mean you have to sacrifice fitness if you know this secret: interval training! Interval training-workouts or HIIT, (high intensity interval training ) is when you alternate periods of high-intensity exercise with low-intensity recovery periods. It increases fitness and burns more calories over a short period of time than steady-state cardio (you know: just doing the same thing for your whole workout time). So how do you get the most out of interval training, and how long should each push and recovery be? One of the many great things about interval training workouts is that there's no single rule. Different lengths of work and recovery bring different benefits-and alternating keeps it fresh. I personally like to do timed intervals and intervals with reps. What do I mean by that? One day, a workout may be 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest with multiple rounds or 10 reps of each exercise moving through it quickly for for an allotted time of say 4 mins with a one minute rest at the end before repeating it again or having a whole new set of exercises with the same format. It’s a fun way to switch it up. It’s my go to for my personal training clients. It kicks their butts and it’s effective. Results happen quickly especially if paired with an equally effective diet. How much recovery you take between intervals depends on your goals. Short intervals are usually paired with equally short or even shorter recovery periods so your body can adapt to repeated maximal efforts. And because your heart rate stays elevated during the recovery periods, your aerobic energy system gets a training benefit, as well. Just know this: Interval training is challenging so if you're just starting to work out, spend a few weeks to a month building your stamina with cardio workouts before adding them to your routine. Once you're ready, add these interval training workouts or exercises to your gym routine once a week to burn more calories, boost your overall fitness level, and get in and out of the gym faster. That's a win-win-situation. H.I.I.T training is outstanding for

your cardiovascular system. It boosts your VO2 max (in simpler terms just means how much oxygen you can use) and it also lowers your resting heart rate, significantly! Your body becomes a furnace for fat burning. HIIT jacks up production of your body’s growth hormones that help you maintain muscle and burn fat for hours after you’re done, and it lowers insulin resistance for better blood sugar control. It does even more than benefit your body, it’s beneficial for your brain. Cognitive output and memory retention also improve. Another great thing about adding interval training to your workout routine is that you can build both strength and endurance fast, this is particularly helpful when training clients because they want to see results quickly and you want to keep them happy and coming for more. You can put together a 20 to 30-minute routine that mixes and matches these great interval exercise options. For a quick and effective workout, start with a 5 -8 minute warmup, and then dive right into your interval training. Each interval can last from 30 seconds to two minutes, with a minute of easy walking between reps. Go for about 20 minutes then cool down. You can really create anything you want. I like to get creative with my clients and students and keep them guessing. They typically love this format. I also teach spin class and if you’re spinning with me, be prepared to do some high-intensity spin

intervals. You can also do this on a stationary bike on your own. Combine the bike with some other bodyweight exercises and the workout will fly by. I love to take my class through a 30 minute spin class and fuse it with 30 minutes of weights. You have everything you need and you’re done in an hour. Weights are an easy way to add intensity to an exercise, especially a compound exercise that incorporates multiple muscle groups. Think about combining a dumbbell squat with an overhead press to create a full body workout. This challenges your shoulders, arms, quadriceps, glutes and core. You get more bang for your buck. Keep in mind that too much HIIT is definitely not a good thing and I’ll get to overtraining in my next article. Overkill will prevent you from working at your true maximum capacity. Do not schedule high intensity interval training every day of the week. 3 times per week is sufficient. HIIT isn’t for everyone, either. Just like anything else. I personally love it but that’s why they make chocolate, vanilla and strawberry protein powder ( not ice cream!). The bottom line is to be informed on all your options of exercise. Find what you love and fits for you. Bonnie Miller is certified fitness instructor at the Ocean City Aquatic and Fitness Center and the JCC in Margate. She is a mom of three and resides Somers Point.

When Financial hardship Hits, Become the CFO of Your Life Christina Sciarretta

O

h, let me count the ways that we can experience financial hardship in 2020! It is no secret that this has been one of the most financially catastrophic years in history. Between Covid, political unrest, a revolution, an unstable stock market, a terrifying appearance of something apparently called "murder hornets", and literally an entire host of other other issues, it is easy to feel like we don't have control, especially when it comes to our own finances. That, my friend, is a lie. Here's the thing: financial hardships happen. Whether it is due to Cov...the entire year of 2020..., a job loss, a foreclosure or short sale, a divorce, the death of a loved one, an illness, etc, there are practices that you can put in place to ground you, so that you can begin to build the foundation of your financial stability. Let’s explore.

Take a Deep Breath

You're not the first person to go through this and you won't be the last. Everything... EVERYTHING... is figureout-able. You need your mind and heart

Over 50Years of Goodness

to be fully engaged in order to financially recover from any situation, so take a deep breath and resolve to be solution-minded. You cannot go back, you can only go forward. We’re looking for solutions, not judgement.

Gain Clarity by Auditing

You will not move forward completely in any financial hardship, unless and until you gain clarity around your current situation. Yes, it will take cold, hard, brutal honesty with yourself and your partner, but I promise you this: the breakdown comes just before the break through. Don't run from the breakdown. Don't hide from the breakdown. Allow the breakdown to happen, and create the space for a breakthrough. Where there is clarity, there is power. Sit down at your desk or kitchen table with a cup of hot coffee, your laptop, a pencil and a notebook and get to evaluating the financial situation of your company like a CFO. ● What is your total annual and monthly household income? ● How much cash do you have and in which accounts? ● Do you have any remaining liquid assets?

What are they and what is the current market value? What are your monthly expenses right now? How much debt do you have? What KIND of debt do you have? What are the monthly payments on each credit card? What are the interest rates for each debt. What are the payoff amounts on each of your debts?

Set Smart Goals

Now that you have clarity around where you are in your financial situation, it's time to decide where it is that you want to go. That's right, it's goal setting time, CFO! I can already hear you in my mind right now, "Goals?? I can't set goals! I am just trying to survive!" Excellent mindset. Let’s, instead of finding a solution, run around like our heads are on fire… That, CFO, is what I like to refer to as the survival mindset, and if you stay in the mindset of consistently surviving for just the present moment, you may continue to survive, but you likely will not pass survive to get to thrive. (By the way, this goes far beyond financials, y'all!) Your mindset can easily distract you and keep you from getting ahead. Financial stability doesn't just happen for a majority of us humans. It happens intentionally. So create your financial goals, and make 'em S.M.A.R.T! S.M.A.R.T stands for specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and timebound. ● Specific: Create a clear and definable end result. I recommend setting 5-year, 3- year and 1-year goals. The quality of the goal depends largely on your ability to get crystal clear on what it is that you want. “I want to put food on the table” is too vague and general, but, "I will have a 640 score by November 2020" or “I will pay off $10,000 of debt by August 2021” or “I will have 5,000 in savings by April 2021 is specific and points you in a clear direction. ● Measurable: How will you measure your progress? Break the big goals down into smaller goals. Those are called “benchmarks”. Making a goal measurable allows you to track your progressand know when you're winning or losing.

Achievable: A goal isn’t a pipe dream. It must be attainable, otherwise you will lose motivation and feel like you’re failing. By all means, set goals that are out of reach, but if you feel the lag of motivation, make sure that your goal is actually achievable for you in the timeframe, which brings me to the next letter in S.M.A.R.T... Relevant: Is this goal relevant to the success of your financial future? "Buying a new car by 2021" is completely irrelevant when you are working on cleaning up the mess you made. Taking on additional debt is opposite of the right decision. Make it relevant. Improve your credit, put money in savings for emergencies only, pay off debt, buy a home, invest your money, start a retirement account. Make your goals relevant to your financial stability in future. Time-Bound: A goal without a deadline is just a pipe dream. There is no power behind it. BY WHEN will you hit your goal? That kind of clarity will power your goal and help you to know when to course correct.

Take Action

Once you have put your mindset in check, audited your finances, and set smart goals to set the ship in the right direction, it is time to take action. This is where you take your seat at the board table and become the CFO of your life. A great CFO doesn’t just evaluate the situation and come up with a strategic plan. They execute the plan with fervency. Get expert help if you need help or research to learn about personal finance and budgets, and then take massive action. Becoming the CFO of your life takes work, yet it is work that is worth its weight in gold. Financial stability takes intention, clarity, and action. It is within reach for you, if you are willing to take control and step into becoming the CFO of your own life. Remember, everything is figure-out-able. Until next time, Shore Locals, I am sending you peace, love, and good vibes from my home to your's!

Hidden Gems of South Jersey

Discover Estell Manor Park

By Tammy Thornton

L

ooking for a fun place to take the family to experience the great outdoors? Estell Manor Park in Atlantic County is

a Hidden Gem of South Jersey that offers about 1700 acres of nature to enjoy. My first memories of the Atlantic County Park go back almost 20 years, when I would bring my little boy to our church’s playgroup. We moms were always looking for ways to keep our active sons busy. Estell Manor Park was a favorite on our list of summer Adult skink found on boardwalk at Estell Manor Park. excursions. We would visit the Warren E. Fox Nature Center before the woods, stopping to have lunch taking the kiddos on hikes through among the trees.

Today, you can visit the park and walk some of the 20 miles of trails while studying nature and bird watching. If you are observant, it’s possible to see bald eagles, otters, beavers, red foxes, or a yellow-bellied sap sucker. On a recent visit with my husband, our 12-year-old son, and his friend, we spotted an Eastern Bluebird and Yellow-billed Cuckoo. We were also fortunate to see a five-striped skink and a few steps further, found an adult skink with a red head. Upon leaving the park, we saw a black rat snake on the side of the road. Skinks, and snakes, oh my! But as one who likes the gentler, less scaly side of nature, the park had plenty to offer me as well. We had visited the park with the intention of seeing the mountain laurel blooming at the peak of its season and were not disappointed. All along the forest roads and walking paths, mountain laurel cascaded from its tall shrubs. We enjoyed walking along part of the 1.8 mile Swamp Trail Boardwalk, which is a fully-accessible elevated wooded nature trail that meanders through the woods. According to the Estell Manor Park’s website, “After the Native Americans, this land was owned by the Estell family and was the site of a glassworks in the 1800's, then became the site of a munitions plant during World War I. After 70 years, the forest has reclaimed this area, and is now home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals.” Parts of Estellville Glassworks can still be found at the park. Local Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts know that the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery is located within the park. Volunteer troops of Scouts often remember the veterans by planting flags at their gravesites. Adjacent to the cemetery is the Atlantic County

A newly completed and ongoing project of the park is the construction of a butterfly and pollinator garden, located near the Warren E. Fox Nature Center. One part of the garden features a butterfly made of flowers, surrounded by raised beds filled with pollinator-attracting flowers such as purple coneflower, bee balm, catmint, and salvia. The new garden should attract nature lovers as well as pollinators. As of June 15, 2020, the park will begin accepting reservations for rental/use of its pavilions at various park locations. The park also has grills and picnic tables available on a “first come first serve” basis. Some of the other activities to be enjoyed at the park are fishing off the

No more pencils no more books No more teacher's dirty looks Out for summer Out till fall We might not come back at all Alice Cooper – “School’s Out” – 1972 y the time you read this, most schools in both Pennsylvania & New Jersey will be out for the summer. Of course, with COVID-19, this has been a school year unlike any other. I wanted to start this week by expressing my sincere wishes and congratulations to the Class of 2020. There is no way that this is how you envisioned your senior year of high school taking place, but if you can handle this, you can handle anything, right…? Since I last wrote, the major sports world is beginning to get back to “normal”. The PGA Tour held its first competitive tournament, albeit without fans. NASCAR held a race in Florida with a very small amount of fans. The NHL seems to be moving

“full steam ahead”, while the NBA and MLB are bringing up the rear on a resumption of play for sure. On the local front, a high school baseball player signs with his favorite pro team. Plus, a prominent name in rowing is coming back to our area to coach in college. From the entertainment world, my girlfriend and I have watched both seasons of a popular Netflix favorite. Her son and I have started a different Netflix program that has more mystery about it. Plus, you never know when an old movie will pop up that you just have to sit and watch again. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll lead with golf as the PGA Tour held its first official tournament in 13 weeks and it was outstanding! The Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial in Fort Worth was compelling television from start to finish. I watched a little on Thursday just to see what golf looked like with no galleries and no high fives between player & caddie, etc. Daniel Berger left with the winner's plaid jacket Sunday when he beat Collin Morikawa on the first playoff hole to end what had been the tour's longest absence since World War II.

From a health standpoint, no players, caddies or staff tested positive for COVID-19. From a golf standpoint, the strong field with the top five ranked players in the world and 16 of the top 20 did not disappoint! Being a former TV guy, I was fascinated at the logistics it took to get Golf Channel & CBS Sports to televise the event. Only Jim Nantz was in the 18th tower, Sir Nick Faldo was back at the Golf Channel studios in Orlando (with others). Behind the scenes, they had a director & crew in Stamford, CT, and then graphics folks in California, plus Golf Channel folks in Orlando, all connected seamlessly to televise the event. As for the golf? It was filled with drama as the leaderboard was STACKED on Sunday coming down the stretch. I can’t wait to watch the next event at Harbour Town in SouthCarolinaa. (Although I would’ve been more excited if Tiger Woods decided to play) Meanwhile, NASCAR raced in front of actual fans last weekend in Homestead, Florida. Denny Hamlin won the race…but the BIGGER stories took place off the track. 1,000 fans, mostly invited military members who could each bring a guest -were back at a NASCAR race for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic started. The other big story was Bubba Wallace & no Confederate flags. Wallace, the only black driver in the Cup Series, has become the sport's most prominent activist after he successfully called on NASCAR to ban Confederate flags at its events. The series quickly did just that, but the real test will come when races are held with full fans in attendance. Most of the 1,000 fans that were in Florida were long gone by the time Ham-

lin drove under the checkered flag at 10:46 p.m. on Sunday night, ending a marathon day. In fact, that very long day was the capper to a very long week for NASCAR. There were three Cup Series races in eight days, all of them bringing drivers into hot and steamy weather conditions that left many of them exhausted, all wrapped around the ongoing national outcry surrounding the battle for racial equality. In hockey, the NHL is in Phase 2 of its return-to-play protocol and training camps are set to open on July 10th. That’s about it though for what we know 100 percent as there are still questions about where the hub cities will be and if the players will actually agree to return to the ice. For now, all they’ve approved is the postseason format, not if they will actually step on the ice or not. Players were tested for COVID-19 before returning to their practice facilities,

and will be tested twice weekly going forward. There were temperature checks at the facilities as well. There were restrictions placed on the number of players who could use the facility at one time -- including a maximum of six players for on-ice sessions -- and on time spent in the facilities. As for the hub cities, players have expressed a desire not to feel totally sequestered, so it seems like Las Vegas is a front-runner, although the Golden Knights wouldn’t be allowed to play at home. There’s talk that Toronto might be another hub city, as it’s a Canadian city and on the Eastern Time Zone, which would accommodate that TV group. Again, this is all still in flux, so pardon the phrase here, but “stay tuned!”

JUNE 19, 2020

One thing that seems sure is that the NHL players seem to want to return to play. I’m not sure you can say the same for the NBA players as there’s been significant pushback from a group of NBA players on that league’s return-to-play plan. Kyrie Irving joined a conference call with nearly 100 players & several stars last week and reportedly made an impassioned plea for players to make a stand and sit out the season's resumption in Orlando. According to published reports, several players suggested they'd be willing to sit out the season -- and numerous more discussed social issues, league economics and, ultimately, a sense that they needed to be united moving forward. Which means the NBA and a return-to-play is anything but a sure thing right now. Which brings us to baseball, and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred tells ESPN that he’s now “less confident” about a 2020 season. "I'm not confident. I think there's real risk; and as long as there's no dialogue, that real risk is gonna continue," Manfred said when asked if he was confident there would be a season. Manfred went on to say, "It's just a disaster for our game, absolutely no question about it. It

JUNE 19, 2020

shouldn't be happening, and it's important that we find a way to get past it and get the game back on the field for the benefit of our fans," he said. Manfred said the MLBPA's "decision to end good-faith negotiations" and the need for an agreement with the union on health and safety protocols "were really negative in terms of our efforts." He added, "The owners are 100 percent Jake McKenna committed to getting baseball back on the field, Unfortunately, I can't tell you that I'm 100 percent certain that's gonna happen." My take on all this…? Baseball hasn’t been “America’s Favorite Pastime” for a long time now, and this might do some lasting & permanent damage if they don’t play at least SOME games. In other words, c’mon guys…find a way to figure this OUT…!!! There is ONE piece of good news from baseball and that’s Jake McKenna. The 2020 Ocean City High School graduate quickly said yes when the Philadelphia ● Phillies called to offer him a minor league contract last Sunday. The

6-foot-7, left-handed pitcher will receive a $20,000 signing bonus, the maximum allowed this year for undrafted players. How exciting to see a local kid get signed by his LOCAL team? McKenna grew up a Phillies fan, and he says his favorite player is pitcher Cole Hamels. He was going to attend St. Joseph’s in Philly, but couldn’t resist the chance to play pro ball with his favorite team. Jake…good luck! Let’s hope you can even find HALF the success that “California Cole” did with the Phils…that would be awesome to see! In other LOCAL sports news, welcome back to the area Jeff Garbutt. The Atlantic City grad &

former Temple rower has accepted a job as the new head coach of the LaSalle men’s & women’s rowing teams. This is GREAT news not just for the current Explorers, but also for all the high school rowers around here hoping for a scholarship. You have to figure Garbutt is going to dig for his talent deeply in the Cape Atlantic League schools. The 48-year-old spent time as the girls coach at Ocean City & Mainland Regional before starting in college jobs at the University of Miami and then the University of Iowa…now he’s coming “home” and we are all better for it. Welcome HOME, Jeff Garbutt! I’ll close with three items from entertainment, starting with “Dead to Me” on Netflix. Just two seasons and 20 episodes so far and my girlfriend and I ripped through those pretty quickly as we just had to find out how things would resolve themselves between Jen & Judy. Jen, played by Christina Applegate, is mourning the hit-and-run death of her husband, while Judy, played by

It’s a dark comedy that comes in short 2634 minute bites, and I promise you that you will not be disappointed if you check it out! Meanwhile, my girlfriend’s son Michael & I have started “The Stranger” on Netflix. It’s an eightpart British mystery thriller based on the Harlan Coben novel of the same title. So far, so good. Oh, and if you like that one, I’ve already finished “Safe”, which is also created by Harlan Coben. Michael C. Hall from “Dexter” is outstanding in the lead role Tom Delaney. Safe focuses on Delaney (Hall), a pediatric surgeon and widowed father of two teenage daughters. He is struggling to connect with his daughters as they still grieve the loss of his wife from cancer one year prior. After his 16-yearold daughter Jenny goes missing, Tom uncovers a web of secrets as he frantically searches for her. Completely worth it…! Finally, I guess I’ll close out with a British movie too as “Notting Hill” came on the TV the other night and I watched it again for the first time since I saw it in the theater. If you haven’t seen the 1999 film,

check it out and enjoy Julia Roberts plays American movie star Anna Scott and Hugh Grant is superb as bookstore owner William Thacker. I love it for Rhys Ifans, who steals the show as his wacky flat-mate Spike…! It’s a late-90’s “rom-com” for sure, but a good one to watch with your spouse. Please let me extend a Happy Father’s Day to all the Dads out there… and I already congratulated the Grads at the top of the column as well. With the civil unrest in our country and trying times, I continue to hope & pray that we can all get along, come together, and stay healthy & safe…! Finding Your Happy Place

By Nancy Adler

T

hough there is plenty Americans disagree about, most will agree about stress. As a nation, we have plenty of it: 77% of people experience physical symptoms because of their angst levels. Not to mention 48% of those also believe their stress levels have a negative effect on their personal and professional lives. Now with a pandemic and the world in transition, we need to find solace in our own mind. Even with these staggering (and revealing) figures, self-care, exercise, healthy eating, and mindfulness usually come last in our list of priorities. After all, with a to-do list that’s as tall as we are, it’s difficult to force ourselves to pause and relax. But this decade, it’s time to embrace "me" time and adapt rituals and habits that lower our anxiety . The idea of surrounding yourself with absolute quiet might feel odd or even frightening to people accustomed to constant manmade noise. Expect that, but don't let it deter you. And yes, some people sit in silence for a year, but what works best for most

of us is finding everyday moments of silence. Silence is important in the morning because cortisol levels are highest then. Skip flipping on the news or opening the paper when you wake up. "It takes only 12 minutes in the morning to lower your cortisol. Spend the first 12 minutes of the day sitting quietly, watching the sun come up, with a steaming cup of tea. It's normal to have a radio on while doing chores. But try going without and spending 30 minutes in quiet as you wash dishes, dust, or iron. Those kinds of things are mindless in a good sense as they don't require us to do any heavy intellectual work. This leaves you open to your intuition, that quiet part that can't be heard over noise. Don't be surprised if solutions to nagging problems become apparent during these quiet times. Walking in nature is a simple way to find silence. Save the iPod for the gym and tune in to your natural surroundings. I personally find the quiet in my backyard . The benefit of gardening is twofold: It puts you in touch with nature, and it's great solo silent time. Simply repotting some plants can bring stress levels way down. Swimming is not only a way to clear your mind but Help burn off a few of those calories A silent commute, with social media off, can be an especially beneficial way to both begin and end the

workday, Silently reflect on the day's events to renew a tired spirit and restore peace. Cell phones, instant messaging, and e-mails are filled with sound and stimulation. Each technology comes with an accompanying noise, most of which we don't even notice any more. Try silencing all your tech gadgets from time to time and spend a few hours enjoying the difference that accompanies a quieter, more complete life. Heart of Surfing Gets Ready to Serve the Special Needs Community for its 7th Season

Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

he Jersey Shore is fortunate to be the home of so many amazing charitable organizations, and Heart of Surfing is at the top of that list, giving kids with special needs a safe and fun day out surfing the swells of our local beaches. Originally set up in 2014 by Shore Local Magazine owners, Cindy and Bob Fertsch, Heart of Surfing was created to serve the autistic community and over the years has grown into a staple of several special needs circles offering both a physical and creative outlet to so many children. Cindy and Bob first started Heart of Surfing for their son Jamie when they noticed the lack of organized activities that were targeted for those

living with special needs. Bob, being an avid surfer his entire life, always dreamed of sharing that passion with his children. Their son, Jamie, was diagnosed with autism at a young age, but this did not deter Bob from allowing Jamie to experience the thrill of riding the perfect wave. Seeing the joy that surfing brought to Jamie, or “The Big Kahuna” as Bob would call him, inspired Cindy and Bob to search for different ways Jamie could experience the sport he loved. In 2014 they discovered an organization called “Surfers Healing” on the West Coast which provided surfing sessions for children with autism. Surfers Healing would come to New Jersey one day a year and put on a session for families with autism in the local area, however these spaces

would fill up incredibly fast leaving so many children without the opportunity to participate. After speaking with some of her friends who also had children with special needs, Cindy and Bob decided that they would put on their own version of Surfers Healing right here in South Jersey. The first week consisted of only 5 people, mainly close friends and family, but once the ball got rolling, the members grew exponentially and by the end of that first summer, they already had 50 kids participating. Then, after an appearance on the Dr Oz show which included generous donations of $5000 from the show and 5 stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) from Ron Jon surf shop, Heart of Surfing became a 501c3 nonprofit organization, offering surfing, skateboarding and more for families with special needs. Now, Heart of Surfing amasses around 200 members each year, with on average up to a 100 kids each week. Every Saturday

over the summer, Heart of Surfing sets themselves up on a beach in the local area and invites special needs families to come and get 30 minutes of surfing completely free. The kids are of varying abilities and ages and the great thing about the

organization is that they create a unique experience for every participant. “Our number one goal is to create a positive experience for everyone. That looks very different for each participant. For some, you may not even know they are on the autism spectrum. They’re up, they’re shredding, they’re doing fantastic. For others, like my son, it may be that they never stand up. It may just be they are going in the water and laying on a board, but that’s big for them” said Cindy. Heart of Surfing also allows siblings to join in and recognizes how this is a great bonding opportunity for families. The only way any of this amazing work would be possible is with the help of volunteers. Each year, the beach patrols of numerous local beaches kindly donate a day to help with running the event. This helps determine which beach they will be surfing on that week and moving around helps to make it accessible for kids all over Atlantic and Cape May County. Around 30 individuals from the beach patrol volunteer their time to take the kids out surfing, bring boards for the kids to use, and donate water bottles. One year, a beach patrol even brought a DJ. Overall, the volunteers make it much more enjoyable for the kids. Heart of Surfing is fortunate to have a core

group of volunteers from the local surf community come each week to volunteer. Heart of Surfing is always looking for help – the more volunteers they have, the more kids and families they can serve. Sadly, earlier this year we had to say goodbye to Cindy and Bob’s son Jamie, who passed unexpectedly. Heart of Surfing lives on in his legacy and to commemorate his life, Cindy and Bob have created the Jamie Fertsch Memorial Scholarship. This, along with their already

This is a truly touching way to remember Jamie who was the inspiration for this organization and a huge part of its success. There are also plans to organize a “paddle out” with the group whereby participants take their surf boards into the ocean making a circle and releasing a

For Cindy, what makes Heart of Surfing so special is the sense of community it brings by attracting local families that are facing similar challenges and allowing them to share advice and support each other. ↘Continued from 31 first-hand the challenges of raising an autistic child. For that reason, Cindy and Bob have no plans to grow Heart of Surfing into anything more than a community-based organization aiming to help local families with special needs. Going into their 7th summer this year, things will be a little different because of COVID-19. Although plans of how they will handle it have not been finalized yet due to the rules and regulations constantly changing as we learn new information, what can be guaranteed is that the kids will continue to have some of the most unforgettable experiences of their life. Heart if Surfing recognizes that this year everyone is having to do things a differently, however they are still committed to providing the best experience possible. If you want to see what Heart of Surfing is all about and have a special needs child or children you think would be interested, the best thing to do is keep up to date with the Facebook page “Heart of Surfing” as they will be posting updates about the plans for this year. One of the best things about this organization is that they provide their sessions absolutely free for anyone wanting to participate, demonstrating their commitment to inclusivity for all.

Although surfing is the main activity the organization participates in, there are also a wide variety of other opportunities for kids who may not be comfortable in the water. Pre and post surf season, Heart of Surfing hosts skateboarding sessions in various local skate parks. In fact, this year they were due to have an event in partnership with AC Skates which unfortunately had to be cancelled because of COVID-19. They also run sensory-friendly ice skating and roller-skating sessions along with seasonal activities. If you are interested in getting involved as a volunteer, there are several opportunities to do so. Currently, Heart of Surfing is looking for a volunteer to help with running their website page. So, if you are a college student looking for some extra credit or are just feel passionate about this cause and would like to offer your services, please text Cindy at 609-705-5323. Addition-

ally, if you would like to volunteer as a surf instructor you can text Cindy and see what opportunities she has available. Heart of Surfing is a non-profit organization and is only able to bring these amazing experiences to special needs kids by the generosity of so many people. If you are interested in supporting Heart of Surfing but do not feel as though as you can help with any of the hands-on duties, you can make

a donation of any amount or there is a selection of branded merchandise for sale. Donations can be made in their website at HeartofSurfing.org What started out as a small group on the beach trying to create a fun and safe environment for their children with autism has become the must-do event of the summer for non-specific special needs families. This is another example of a great organization that is not allowing the current situation to stand in their way, and with the recent relaxation on restrictions Heart of Surfing is eagerly awaiting the moment they can officially announce “Surf’s Up!” Dina Guzzardo is the President and Executive Promoter of Dina Media Group LLC. "The Time Is Now": EHT Rallies For Social Justice

By Krystle J Bailey

“I

know we cannot change the whole world, but we can change our little part of it, declared Glorist Moore of Egg Harbor Township. “We are change agents, echoed her friend, Tamika Gilbert Floyd. “Change has to come from within the community, with grassroots efforts, added Andrea Fogg. These three Egg Harbor Township moms came together to pave a way for change. In the wake of the George Floyd murder at the hands of Minneapolis law enforcement, protests erupted across the world, including throughout Atlantic County. George Floyd’s death directly followed the killing of Ahmaud Arbery and Breon-

na Taylor, all who sadly became three more black Americans failed by the justice system. George Floyd became a tipping point for many Americans who have long felt that enough is ENOUGH. Tamika Floyd and Andrea Fogg nodded in agreement as Glorist Moore expressed that when we heard George Floyd call out for his mother, all mothers we re su m m o n e d . Moore, an EHT resident and mother of two, shared with conviction that God wouldn’t let her “pray this one away. She knew in her heart-of-hearts that she was being called to be a part of active change in her community. On the Wednesday prior to the June 7th kickoff event, Glorist text her friend Tamika Floyd expressing her urgent need to do something. They brought their friend Andrea Fogg on board and planned a peace-

ful protest for that Sunday. The June 7th protest, “Break The Cycle of Injustice would become a kickoff event for the community. Over 400 protestors marched their way to Tony Canale Park in EHT. Upon arrival, a voter registration booth was set up along with information about the 2020

Census. Volunteers handed out cold water as everyone prepared to hear from a powerful lineup of speakers. Protestors of all races and ethnicities gathered in the large field, waving their “Black Lives Matter flags and

shouting for justice. The emotion in the crowd was palpable and hopeful. Goosebumps rose on the skin of everyone in the crowd as Darchele Scott sang “Rise Up.” Tears rolled down emotional faces as 5th grader, Jailen Scott shared his original poem entitled, “I Can’t Breathe 2.0.” Emotions continued as 4th grader Marvin Burroughs shared his original poem, “I Am a Black Boy.”

The powerhouse list of speakers continued including Flynn Altomare, Ariana Smith, Dante Moore, Freeholder Ashley Bennett, Fred Fogg, and Pastor Tim Chambers along with Youth Pastor Urick Lewis from Fresh Start Church. As emotions ran high and a passion for change was shared among the crowd, it was deeply understood that this energy couldn’t end when everyone dispersed at the end of the day. This was the beginning of a movement in our hometown, as well as across the nation. Tamika Floyd, Andrea Fogg, and Glorist Moore expressed repeatedly that this isn’t about their names or recognition, but that they are following their God led calling to be agents

for change. They are serving as the catalyst for conversations, education, and equity for black and brown people in our community. The need for change extends will beyond the call for police reform and equity in the justice system. These three moms, along with thousands of others, are calling for equity for people of color in the Healthcare system, black history to be taught for more than just a month in February, racial disparities to be addressed in places of employment and so much more. It begins with our community and with allies of all races who believe that change is urgently necessary. It begins with conversations, education, and a choice to stand up for what is right. Long lasting changes can only happen when people come together for a greater good and continue to

show up for the cause. June 7th launched a movement and an invitation for the community to come together for equity and justice. These three powerhouse mothers will work together with fellow community members to address the unconscious and conscious biases that exist in America towards people of color. To get involved and be a part of the movement with Tamika, Glorist, and Andrea email inquiries to www. tinyurl.com/breakthecycleEHT.com. Mulberries are my Jam!

I

first learned of the wonder of a mulberry at my Grandparents home in Wildwood Crest. On summer mornings, my grandfather (Gramps) and I would pick mulberries to add to our bowl of Cheerios. I don’t remember too many of mine actually making it to the cereal bowl. My purple stained hands, mouth and shirt always gave away my method of three for me and one for the bucket, but I didn’t care. Who needed Cheerios and milk? I’ll take my mulberries au naturel, thank you. I don’t know where I was looking, or where they were hiding, but until last year I sadly hadn’t stumbled across another mulberry tree. That is until I was walking along my street last Summer. Finding that tree was so exciting. I felt like a kid again. I

kept eating more and picking more, I was unstoppable. Until I realized I was eating the fruit off of a strangers tree, while standing in their yard. That didn’t totally stop me, but it did make my pickings quick and at odd times of the night, when people weren’t likely to see me. It was worth it. They were just as delicious as I remembered. A year later, I have discovered not one, but TWO mulberry trees growing in my own yard. Jackpot! With the quickness of one Google search I made sure they were indeed my elusive favorite fruit trees. I realized not only are they not a rare and special fruit, they are quite the opposite. Everywhere I looked, the same word kept coming up to describe them: invasive. Seems harsh for a plant that offers so much and demands so little. I realize now they were literally everywhere. How could I have missed them? I’m going to have to make up for lost time. I ‘upcycled’ an old Johnson’s Popcorn tub to wear around my neck for easy picking (that ingenuity is thanks to my mom and her countless times taking me blueberry picking) and

ADAMS-PERFECT FUNERAL HOMES, INC IS HOSTING A

FREE SHREDDING EVENT with two trees and no one to stop me, I’ve devised an assortment of fun ways to retrieve these precious little delights. So far, I’ve moved my picnic table to stand on, and I’ve driven my car underneath them to pick through my sunroof. Today, I am going to put down a tarp and shake them down like they owe me money. This will be a great way to get those dark ripe ones I can see but can’t reach. And probably a great stress reliever, too. With this first harvest I will be making a Rosemary Infused Mulberry Simple Syrup. This will be a great way to add a burst of mulberry flavor to tons of recipes because now that mulberries and I have been reunited, I think we’re going to be seeing a lot of each other. I will leave you with this fabulous recipe and a plea: If you have any special mulberry recipes please send them my way, I have a lot of catching up to do! Rosemary Infused Mulberry Simple Syrup ● 2 cups mulberries, rinsed ● 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar

2/3 cup water 1 1/2T fresh chopped rosemary Once mulberries, sugar, and rosemary are combined in your pot, add water and simmer on a stove top for about 20-25 minutes. Everything will begin to cook down and start smelling delicious. Mixture will reduce by about two thirds and what you end up with is a warm dark purple syrup. Strain the liquids through a fine sieve until you have just syrup in the bowl. Do not mash down on the solids! Pour your deep purple liquid gold into a container, top with a small sprig of fresh rosemary and place in the fridge to get cold before using. A TIP: This liquid will stain just about anything!!! So make sure you use glass bowls or containers for storage, and enjoy! ● ●

And Now The Good News With Raymond Tyler The Light with Raymond Tyler

I

had promised to share as much valuable information regarding The Corona Virus and South Jersey and People Of Color until the virus was over. That is a promise I am now breaking. After 3 months of more of “you can’ts” I am taking a break. I was on social media looking for just one great story that would make me smile...I found none. Everything was Corona, Police Brutality, and one dark story after another about money, don’t enjoy the summer (like who is allowed to enjoy themself this summer?) Unfortunately according to every news source available the world as we know it will pretty much end in September. So I went out to

find Good News and make people happy. I will also continue to try and find good news and give you some valuable information in the future but today just Good News.. Good News - Activist Stephen Young is producing a new radio show called SAY IT LOUD on WEHA 88.7 FM and 100.3 FM. The new show dedicated to positive change in the community can be heard every Thursday from 5pm to 6pm. I am a stone cold realist, but Steve Young is a realist with vision, meaning he works with what he has today to create the change he wants to see in the future. Young is the man I call on the phone to get some clear insight, that positive change is possible and worth the struggle. Young DOES NOT try to move me with catchy rhyming rhetoric or impossible dreams. Young has always given me clear road maps to where his brand of activism is heading. Steven Young having his own regular weekly platform is long overdue. I did ask Young why people other than Black or Brown should listen?

Young replied “People should listen and be educated on Black History and Black Current Events to find out where they may fit in as a Human Being.” SAY IT LOUD, can also be heard at www.wehavegospel.com and listeners are encouraged to call in at 609-641-8870. Good News - The Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City Celebrates it’s 2 year anniversary. The last 4 months not withstanding. The Hard Rock Casino, Resort, Hotel has provided Atlantic City and myself with a lifetime of memories in 2 short years. Even with all the uncer tainty since March, The Hard Rock has retained a significant amount of it’s staff and provided them with gift cards of significant amounts of money to help the employees survive these times. Before the word pandemic became a word we used every day...The Hard Rock quickly became one of the cities top concert venues boasting appearances by artists from Mariah Carey to Run DMC to Janet Jackson to Bobby Brown. The Hard Rock has also taken full advantage of it’s smaller venue Sound Waves with Motown celebrations, intimate concerts with artists like The Time, Tanya Tucker and musicals like the popular Jersey Boys. At the time I am writing this. I have no idea what The Hard Rock

will be doing to celebrate entertainment-wise. I am sure they will take full advantage of the beach and boardwalk and I can’t wait. Until then , I know they will be giving away some great cars as soon as possible but for more information please visit www.hardrockhotelatlanticcity.com Good News - Local Cyclist Robert Williams has helped NBA Hall Of Famer, Bill Walton raise over $100,00 for BIKE FOR HUMANITY. Williams has cycled in races and bikea-thons to raise money for charities in almost every major city and on both coasts. Williams was part of a virtual bike-a-thon organized by Bill Walton to raise money for those affected by the Covid 19 virus. Robert Williams will be taking to the open roads to help Bike For Humanity again on June 25th. Please visit www.BikeForHumanity.com to get more information or make a contribution. That’s all the space we have for Good News today...but I will have more next time. If you have some good news, please contact me at RaymondTyler2018@Gmail.com

on’t be fooled by its name. Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) can be found in the flat terrain of South Jersey as well as throughout the Eastern United States from Maine to Florida. While mountain laurel does grow on mountain slopes and thrives in the Appalachian Mountains, it also flourishes in sandy woods such as those found at the Jersey Shore. A dense, rounded, flowering, and shade-loving shrub, mountain laurel is often mistaken for rhododendron, as both are members of the heath family (Ericaceae). However, mountain laurel’s flower clusters are unique, with fused petals that form a five-sided cup shape with tiny dots and lines that give it the nickname calico bush. Like its cousins azaleas and rhododendrons, mountain laurel grows best in humus rich and acidic soil. The state flower of both Pennsylvania and Connecticut, mountain laurel requires cool, moist, well-drained soil, and does not do well in heavy clay or wet soil. Though it can survive in full sun or shade, mountain laurel

will be healthiest and bloom best in part shade with dappled light, making it the perfect plant for a woodland garden. Recently, my friend Esther called to tell me I simply must see the blooming mountain laurel at Estell Manor Park in Atlantic County. When a gardener tells you to visit a flower at its peak, they mean go now. As circumstances would have it, my visit was delayed by a week and some of the flowers had already started to fade. But, even so, what a show it was. All along the wooded roads and through the walking paths, mountain laurel was covered in clusters of white and sometimes pink flowers. While walking along the curving trails and finding mountain laurel cascading down each side, I had to agree with my friend’s description of feeling like you were attending a woodland wedding. Mountain laurel, which can grow from 5 to 15 feet, usually blooms from late May to June, but the evergreen shrub has year-round
