hese days, it might be difficult to find a table at your favorite restaurant. With social distancing rules in affect, the next best option is to call up your favorite eatery for delivery or takeout. But what if you don’t feel like leaving the comfort of home? There are many mobile apps for users to choose from. GrubHub offers a wide selection of mobile ordering options from some of the most popular restaurants to your favorite local eateries. The ordering process couldn’t get any easier. Using the GrubHub mobile app or grubhub.com, users type in their address. From there, you are taken to a list of select restaurants in your area. You can scroll through a wide selection of food options to satisfy your hunger cravings. If it’s on their menu, odds are you can have it delivered. Once you’ve made your selection, pay using your desired mobile payment option and that’s it. Now, all you have to do is sit back and wait for your order to be delivered to you. Be sure set your notifications on to find out when your delivery will arrive. Some restaurants also have convenient pickup options available,

but keep in mind that delivery may only be available in select areas, depending on your location. Want to have a pizza night with the family? The Slice mobile app can help. The Slice mobile app will connect you to the best pizzerias in your city with their virtual ordering system. You can browse through your favorite pizzeria’s menu through their easy-to-use app or website at slicelife.com. There are many restaurants in South Jersey that utilizes mobile ordering via DoorDash and UberEats. Gregory’s in Somers Point is just one of them. They even offer free delivery to residents of Somers Point, Ocean City, Linwood and Northfield. Along with the full menu these restaurants offer, you will find expected delivery times to you door. You may also notice discounts off of your order over a certain amount of cash. Restaurants are now offering no contact delivery with the option of offering tips electronically. Please don’t forget to support these restaurant workers due to the difficult times the ongoing health crisis has placed on all of us. Our local restaurants are essential in sustaining our local economy, keeping vital employees working and serving our great community. Whatever you’re craving, mobile food ordering is here for you.

Welcome to a different kind of Summer

I

From the Editor

t's been more than two months since the world as we knew it, came to a grinding halt. In many ways, we have adjusted. Virtual work and school, Zoom meetings, even Zoom "Happy hours" to catch up with friends. It's hard to believe that just two months ago, most people had never even heard of "Zoom!" So many things are being done virtually that we had never imagined were possible. Yet the loss is undeniable, both emotionally and economically. We crave face to face contact with friends, associates, and extended family, remembering hugs and handshakes that made us feel so connected. We also crave a return to our routines, our jobs, a paycheck, stability and assurance that the worst of this crisis is behind us. Summer of 2020's unofficial kick-

off, Memorial Day weekend is guaranteed to look different than all the ones we've known before. We are left with no choice, other than to make the best of it. The margarita glass is still half full! The Jersey Shore offers breathtaking sunrises and sunsets on the bay, miles of beautiful beaches and recreational opportunities. We may not be able to sit in our favorite restaurants yet, but picnicking is making a comeback! Last week, I picked up breakfast at the Windjammer and enjoyed it with my parents at a picnic table at Kennedy park in Somers Point, overlooking the bay. Our area is filled with scenic spots, many along the water, to enjoy a packed lunch, dinner or some takeout. Check out writer Steffen Klenk's article on page 3 describing the Apps available to make scheduling takeout easier than ever at your favorite restaurants. Memorial day is usually marked with parades and ceremonies, honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. 10 Family Fun Activities By Krystle J Bailey

W

e are certainly living through some interesting times these days. Covid-19 Quarantine has rocked our world in innumerable ways including the fact that we are now challenged to come up with new, creative ideas to entertain the family. Once we finish with homeschool, laundry, and dishes, the kids still seem to have an abundance of energy while us parents are tapping out. As a mom of two, I’ve been looking for simple ways to keep them occupied that won’t break the bank or my sanity. Here are 10 simple ideas to keep the family fun flowing. 1. Explore local bike paths. It’s a beautiful way to get outside for fresh air and exercise, while easily maintaining social distancing measures. Whether you walk, run, skateboard, or bike, bike paths are a safe place to spend family time, especially as we continue to see nicer days. Try adding

a layer of fun to the adventure: Count how many different kinds of insects you see along the ride, blast your favorite music and dance your way down the path, play I-Spy With My Little Eye, challenge your family to a race, play Simon Says (use verbs such as hop, skip, jump, run, dance). Check out local paths including the Atlantic County Bikeway that starts at the former Shore Mall, Lake Lenape Park West in Mayslanding, and the 6.5 mile Bike path that begins in Somers Point and ends in Pleasantville. 2. Make a post-Covid Bucket List. Every time the kids mention wanting to go somewhere or do something that is currently off the table due to Covid-19, write it on a paper and put it in a jar. When this all comes to an end, you will have a bucket list of things to experience as we step back out into the world. In the meantime, work together to come up with an alternative that you can do together today. Challenge their imaginations by asking them to come up with an alternative. If the family wants to go to the movie theatre, put it in the jar for later then create a make-shift movie theatre at home with some popcorn and candy. If they want to go to an arcade, create

a family game night and let them exchange quarters to play. These are the moments that memories are made of. 3. Scavenger hunts. There are hundreds of great scavenger hunts all over the wonderful world of Pinterest. They keep the kids busy forever! Instead of having them bring the items (which leaves for one more mess to clean), have them take pictures of the items and bring you the photo album. This is one that takes very little effort on your part and they can do while you sit back and take a break. We all need that break! 4. Create a time capsule. We are living history! The family will remember this for the rest of their lives. Time capsules are a fun way to capture history and look back on it when they’re older. There are time capsule printables found on the internet but here are some ideas to get you started: Capture their hand prints, collect artwork, have them draw their self portrait and/or print out pictures of them, write a letter to your children, have them write one to you, ask them questions such as how they are feeling and what they are thankful for and document their answers in a journal. Tuck it away for one day in the future when all of this is a distant memory.

5. Spread kindness. On your next walk around the neighborhood, which has become a daily thing for most families, collect some rocks. Bring them home, wash them off, and paint them with kind words and inspirational messages. Then on your next walk, redistribute them throughout the neighborhood. A little kindness goes a long way.

6. Snail Mail. We are all missing our friends! Who doesn’t love receiving snail mail? Especially the kind that doesn’t come in the form of a bill! Draw pictures, write letters, address envelopes, and send away! Parents can get in on the fun too. Surprise a friend or a family member with a hand written note letting them know that you’re thinking about them. We may be isolated but we have the opportunity to be more connected than ever. We just have to be creative and intentional about connecting. 7. Backyard Camping. Whether you’re a glamper like myself who needs to keep a fully functioning bathroom at arms length or you’re an avid camper, camping in the backyard is a family memory the kids will never forget. Depending on your level of love of the outdoors, grab some sleeping bags or grab the bug-free tent and make a night of it. Google search “star gazing from your backyard” for some great how-to articles as you’re staring up at the night sky with your family. 8. Movie Marathons. One of the perks of quarantine has been the sudden release of all the best movies and access to streaming services for the perfect movie marathon. Give the family something to look forward to doing together night after night. Disney+ offers just about

every Marvel movie, which is a perfect opportunity to watch them all in chronological order. Disney+ also offers access to every episodic Star Wars movie from the original trilogy through The Rise of Skywalker. The Incredibles, Trolls, Toy Story, Lord of the Rings, and Men in Black are just a few movie series ideas to get you started. Looking for something more educational for the little ones? Check out Netflix for The Magic School Bus, Storybots, Word Party, and If I Were an Animal. There is no shortage of great content on these streaming services. 9. Subscription Boxes. This one comes with a small price tag but there are some incredible subscription boxes for the kids available. One of my favorites comes from KiwiCo. Com, which offers fun, easy to follow, interactive STEM projects for kids of all ages from ages 0-104. Raddish

Kids is a monthly subscription box for young chefs that includes everything they need to cook, bake, and create. Bitsbox offers monthly kits for kids who are interested in computers and coding. Most of these websites offer kits a-la-carte as well, if monthly subscriptions aren’t your thing. 10. Start a Youtube Channel. Kids YouTube channels are all the rage these days. Seems like every kid I know either wants a channel or has a channel. I recently created one for my kids. I do not have any editing skills or hope to make any money off of it. For little kids who don’t quite know better yet, you can set the settings to private or friends only to keep them from the general public. It’s a fun way to document this unprecedented time through their own eyes. Share it with the grandparents and family who can’t be close right now and use

it as a virtual scrapbook to look back on when this is all over. Most of all, hang in there! These are trying times and as parents, most of us are just winging it. You can only do the best that you can! So show yourself some grace, try to unwind, and enjoy these moments with your family. When life picks back up and we go back to our busy lives, we will miss this. Enjoy the moments and have some fun! Stay safe, stay healthy, and shop local whenever you can. We are in this together. ummer is almost here, and so is the warm weather. Over the next several months, many people will be spending their days outside, enjoying countless hours at the beach, soaking up the rays, strolling up and down the boardwalk, going on bike rides or relaxing in the backyard. With the long holiday weekend coming up, it’s time to start thinking about your barbecue grill. The barbecue’s origin can be traced back to the 1500s in Latin America. The word barbecue can be traced to a Caribbean Indian tribe called the Taino. At the time, it was known as barbacoa, meaning, “a raised wooden structure used to grill meat.” Outdoor grilling on a gridiron, or suspended metal grate, refers to what we now call barbecue. Outdoor barbecues are an American pastime, bringing family and friends closer together. While grilling has been an essential part of American cooking for centuries, the barbecue grill has only been in existence since the 1920s. Edward G. Kingsford, a relative on Henry Ford, invented the first charcoal briquette using leftover wood scraps from the Model T

production line. Henry Ford, of course, saw opportunity in this grand invention by encouraging families on take Sunday afternoon picnics (while driving one of his cars). George Stephen came up with the spherical kettle grill design, dome shaped with a rounded lid. With the grilling season nearly upon us, now is the time to start making plans some smoking' good times ahead by prepping your equipment and your menu. Once your grill is cleaned from its winter storage, checked for safety and properly prepared for its first use of the season, it’s time to prepare a meal. There are endless choices of sauces and spices and every region has its own ingredients that make their barbecue sauce special. Memphis and Kansas City style barbecue sauces have a strong tomato base, with a very distinguishable texture. Memphis-style sauce has more spices. Carolina mustard barbecue sauce may not be as popular in the Northeast, but compliments a meal nicely with its sweet and tangy flavor. The texture also changes from region to region. New Jersey has produced several brands of barbecue sauces and rubs that have gained notoriety. Locally based Hank Sauce is known for its distinctive hot sauces ranging at different levels of heat. They also make several rubs from

seasoned to spicy. As a steak chef in our house, one of my personal favorites is BBQ Buddha. Their Zen Steak Rub and Kansas City BBQ Sauce are just a few of the products you’ll find in my kitchen. Each year, the National Barbecue and Grilling Association holds its annual Awards of Excellence, acknowledging the most creative barbecue products on the market throughout the entire country. Did you know that there are schools to teach what is expected as a judge at one of the national barbeque competitions? Sanctioned judges are required to have a qualifications certificate. During such competitions, teams work together in presenting their best sauces. Judges choose winners based on appearance, taste and texture. Making a great batch of barbecue sauce requires time, energy, soul and patience. It's a process that can take anywhere from 45 minutes up to several days. When making your own personal sauce, you can add to the fun by keeping that one special ingredient a closely-guarded secret. Steffen Klenk is a multimedia journalist. Plant Annuals in Your Garden for a Colorful Season

By Tammy Thornton

A

dd wacky weather to the list of strange events in 2020. March was warm, giving us hope, but April and May were unseasonably cold, with the threat of frost often looming in the forecast. Many of my gardening friends exhausted themselves by carting their plants inside and out. Now that Mother’s Day has come and gone, we are finally seeing warmer days on the horizon. Gardeners can breathe a sigh of relief and start planting annuals–those colorful friends that come ready for a party. Annuals are fast growers and, given the right conditions, are fairly carefree, passing in and out of our lives just for a season. They can instantly brighten a bare spot in the garden and provide a continuum of color while perennials take turns blooming. Every year I look forward

to planting flats of “bluish pink impatiens along my front yard garden. White daffodils and grape hyacinths that dominated the white/blue theme of early spring have gone to seed, leaving a lull in color. But by planting annuals that complement my azaleas, the color scheme transforms into shades of pink that will continue to bloom and spread until fall, well after the azaleas are finished. True annuals complete their life cycle in one season, producing seeds in the end. Unlike perennials that spend energy on establishing strong roots for longevity, annuals focus their attention on fast-growing flowers that will attract pollinators and produce seeds. Using your annuals for cut flowers and deadheading spent flowers will encourage more blooms. Gardeners often treat tender perennials as annuals. These plants are native to warmer climates and offer a taste of the tropics with their lush foliage and exotic flowers, but won’t survive our cold winters. We think of palms, caladium, bromeliad, hibiscus, and jasmine. Some talented folks successfully overwinter tender pe-

rennials by bringing them indoors, but this takes knowledge and skill (and a little luck). Just like perennials, annuals have varying sun requirements. Check the garden tags and ask your garden nursery worker about growing conditions before you buy. Coleus, fuschias, and New Guinea impatiens add beautiful colors to a shady corner of the garden. But zinnias, cosmos, and, of course, sunflowers flourish in the sun. Plant petunias and lantana in a sunny spot to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Some annuals can be started by seed indoors weeks before last frost to get a jump on the growing season, but others do well by direct-sowing in the garden after danger of frost. Nasturtiums are easy to grow from seeds and make a colorful addition to the vegetable garden. Both the leaves and flowers are edible, adding a peppery flavor to salads. Zinnias, four o’clocks, sweet alyssum, and marigolds are also good candidates

to grow from seed. Near the end of the summer, stop deadheading so that the flowers can produce seeds, which can be saved for next year’s planting. Of course, for instant gratification, visit your local nursery for annuals that can fill a pretty container. Growing annuals in pots makes them easy to move around as needed. Enjoy these special additions to the garden–friends that bring us joy only for a season, but give us color and happiness while they visit. Shore Local would love to see pictures of how you have incorporated annuals into your garden. Send your questions, comments, and pictures to: shorelocalgardener@gmail.com. Principle Academy Charter doesn’t skip a beat transitioning from classroom to virtual learning

Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

T

he way we educate our children has dramatically changed over the past couple of months and many schools have taken the distance, or virtual, learning approach to ensure their students do not fall behind. With no real indication as to when things will return to normal, schools are having to come up with creative ways to ensure their students are still engaged and progressing with their learning. One school that has been going above and beyond to provide the best for their students is the award-winning Principle Academy Charter (PAC) school in Atlantic County. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what a charter school is, it is essentially a public school, but without the ties to the state or school district that

36

a traditional public school has. They set their own rules, or ‘charter’, and they are held accountable to it. They are still open to all children, must participate in state testing and federal accountability programs, do not require an entrance exam, and cannot charge tuition fees. Principle Academy Charter has a S.T.E.A.M approach where they focus on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. This focus has been a huge pull factor influencing many parent’s decision to send their kids to PAC as many colleges value an education that focuses on these subjects.

As schools have been closed for the past couple of months, Principle Academy Charter has been practical in continuing the education of their students through virtual learning. I am sure many of you are experiencing this at home with your children. Daily zoom classes and helping with homework to ensure your kids do not fall behind with their classwork. It has become a familiar feat in most households across the country. The focus of PAC’s approach has been to maintain normality. Peter Caporilli, who is the Founder and CEO of PAC’s management company

OUR NEW different INCLUDING “UPSIDE DOWN PIZZA” pizzas (CHEESE ON THE BOTTOM, SAUCE ON TOP)

Polymath Achievement Charters LLC, said “We want the at home experience for PAC students to be as ‘normal’ as possible, so in every case we will try to do at home exactly what we do when we are in our school building.” The school is determined to maintain routine in their student’s life, so each day is run as a typical school day. Every day, they produce, edit and distribute their morning announcements via video, and later in the day they send out their school newsletter, the Griffin Growler. The morning announcements include weather, health tips from the school nurse, a lesson on Principles from their Chief School Administrator, singing and dancing, art lessons and much more. The rest of the day progresses like a regular school day with 45-minute classes and an hour lunch break. They are even continuing certain programs such as their “Family Support Specialist” team where 10 staff members take responsibility for about 50 students to support them with matters such as attendance, study habits, internet and resource needs, food service, and much more.

↘Continued from 18 It is admirable to see everything the school is doing to ensure their students can continue their learning from home with a sense of normality so that the transition was as easy as possible. Additionally, to achieve this “normal”, the school has a series of daily zoom classes and google classrooms, in which they held practice sessions before this crisis to ensure each student knew how to use the software. Prior to the Governor’s announcement to close all schools, PAC took a proactive approach by devising a COVID-19 plan which included surveying all of the parents to see who had access to a computer or internet, and who needed extra support. Any student without access to a computer or the internet was issued a free Chromebook and access to an internet hotspot. This really is a testament to the commitment that PAC is making to ensure their students are able to continue their education despite the current situation, and despite any other barriers they may be facing. Like most schools, there have been hurdles that PAC has had to overcome. One being the possibility of a low attendance rating as the students may struggle to adjust to this new way of learning. However, PAC has seen average daily absent

rates of less than 4%, even lower than their usual 8-9%. This goes to show that the extra measures PAC have put in place are really paying off and students are responding to it. If you are wondering what it is like to be a teacher at PAC, well just ask art teacher, Mrs. Mooney. In the most recent newsletter, she spoke about what it was like as a teacher at PAC compared to her previous experience in traditional public schools, ‘I started teaching at PAC this year after 12 years of teaching in public and private schools. The way the staff embraced me really made me feel so welcome and like family. Our dedicated staff truly goes above and beyond for our students and it's an honor to be part of this team.’ She has also been proactive with her distance learning approach by giving students some

art related activities to do so they can their creative juices flowing and all within the confines of their own home. Similarly, the parents cannot recommend the school enough, with many of them praising the school for their response to the pandemic. “One thing I noticed is PAC teachers are really helping each other get through this. And not just to get through but pushing each other to stretch our learning by transitioning out of our comfortable situation to new and exciting modes of teaching!” said one grateful parent. Another could not be happier with how things have gone, “I really want to thank you all for the way that the school is helping us to overcome this situation. God bless you all and hopefully we can see each other soon. Samarah really enjoys her online classes. Ms Doring and Ms. Loo are doing an EXCELLENT job. I couldn’t ask for more. I am so glad that we are part of this school.” A school that can excel when faced with adversities such as this needs to be recognized and praised for what they are doing. The feedback from parents has been readily welcomed by the school and it is inspiring them to continue their great work, “The parents have been amazingly supportive of this process. It’s encouraging to hear them speak when they are reporting that they are excited we are maintaining our programs and truly care about

their children and families.” said Caporilli. As for the future of PAC? Well, the school is determined to be the top ranked charter school in America, and they believe that their response to this crisis has proven that they are more than capable of doing so. “This experience has shown us that the future is now and that PAC is truly on the road to becoming the best charter school in America. It has also shown that we are on the forefront in terms of creating a digital learning environment and that we will take on any challenge head on, and that we will succeed.” explained Caporilli. If you are interested in enrolling your child at PAC for the 2020/2021, simply head over to their website and submit an application form, https:// principleacademycharter.org/enroll/. With so many positive testimonials, enabling your child to be educated and nurtured by PAC’s outstanding members of staff may just be one of the best decisions you make for your children's education. Will Restaurants Survive the Pandemic?

By Chef Joseph Massaglia

I

hope this article finds you and your families in good health and good spirits in these trying times. And trying they are for everyone. Restaurants have been hit hard, so much so in fact that many, many restaurants – particularly the small, individually owned “mom and pop” businesses – will permanently close. Why is this? There are many negative factors impacting businesses today, but restaurants have been especially impacted due in part to initial state-ordered closures; then only being able to operate for take-out or delivery (and up until now those with the appropriate licensing were not able to offer beer, wine and alcoholic beverages to go); dramatically increased cost of goods, especially meat and poultry, and now shortages in deliveries of that meat and poultry; and the additional costs of safety items, like masks for staff and acrylic

“windows” at check-out counters. So, what are restaurants going to need to do to survive until there is a vaccine? And when there is a vaccine are people going to return to restaurants as they did before the Corona virus? According to industry experts, there will be profound changes when restaurants reopen, and there is great uncertainty that people will want to start dining in-person as they did in the past. Here are some industry observations for you to consider: ● There will be less seating inside every restaurant, and most likely more outdoor seating (where possible at the start) with appropriate social distancing in place both inside and out. Tables will be at least six feet apart or customers will be seated at every other table. And sitting at the bar may be a thing of the past. All of that translates to a table decrease of 50% or more in every restaurant and the same decrease in revenue. ● There will be temperature checks for all staff and no tolerance for staff working when sick. ers also may have their temperatures checked at the door – it’s happening in many countries right now. Due to higher costs, less revenue and possibly continuing shortages in ingredients, many restaurants will have to redesign their menus, offering fewer items. And, yes, prices will be higher. In my opinion many restaurants will have to reinvent themselves, especially the expensive, traditional fine-dining restaurants in major cities and areas of the country where they rely on office executives/workers and tourists for a majority of their revenue. Those restaurants have unbelievably high rents and expensive payrolls, and until travel resumes and offices reopen they will have no business at all. Currently most restaurants are trying to survive on take-out and delivery, but that alone is not going to save the business. Owners need to rethink their strategies. What can they do to reinvent themselves to survive? In addition to take out, many restaurants are offering ready-to-go meals their customers only have to reheat at a later time. For example, at Mama Mia’s we offer a take home makeyour-own pizza kit so families can have fun cooking together. Some are now operating as stores, selling products normally found at supermarkets. I also personally believe restaurants will be cashless, as they are now. Every restaurant now doing take-out and delivery is credit card only, and that is going to continue. Speaking of take-out and delivery, for restaurants who prior to the pandemic did not provide this service, this type of business can be a difficult one. It’s a different way of doing business and it takes a while to get into the rhythm. I observed that many restaurants in our area who opened on Mother’s Day for take-out and delivery were overwhelmed, and customers

were upset with delays and food quality. To the businesses I say take your time, think about your kitchen set-up and staff, reorganize your parking if necessary, and set manageable guidelines for orders and delivery times. To customers I ask you please be patient with all restaurants as we all try our best to provide quality meals in a reasonable time and at a reasonable price. If you listened to my radio show, Joe’s Table for Two, on May 16, my guests and I discussed this topic in detail. Chip Tumolo, owner of Amici’s Homemade Specialties in Somers Point, mentioned that some of his meat and poultry costs have risen by 30 to 35 percent. Chef Bill McGinnity, owner of Cousin’s Restaurant & Catering in Ocean City and Nobil Catering, told us that he too is facing those same cost increases – as am I, and the three of us have had to increase our prices to reflect those costs. And, sadly, all of this at a time many people are out of work and may be for some time to come, and who cannot afford increased costs of any type. And, finally, guest Jill Gilber, competitive cook and owner of Gilber Travel Agency in Philadelphia, offered this comment that I think we all should consider. Jill said she doesn’t like the term “new normal.” Instead, she uses the term “temporary normal.” And “temporary” is the key word. This situation is temporary. We will come through this, and when we come out on the other side we will look back and say that it was tough, but we survived. And we will be stronger for having gone through it. Be well, stay safe, and as always, Buon Appetito. or the first time since early April, I’m thrilled to be back in the pages of Shore Local! So let me start out by thanking YOU the readers for supporting the local businesses you see advertised throughout this publication. They’re going to need your help more than ever during these trying times as we all begin to “normalize” and hopefully get over the hump toward a safe & healthy summer in South Jersey. Since I last wrote, the sports world has been mostly shuttered, with the exception of a few events here and there. However, last weekend we saw LIVE golf on TV for the first time in forever, and NASCAR has resumed real racing, albeit without fans in the stands. From the entertainment world, Disney Plus, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime & Apple TV have never been more popular! There is still some broadcast TV programming, “in the can”, but don’t expect the Fall TV season to look like normal. Oh, and like all of

you, I can’t wait until I’m allowed to go to the movie theater again. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I didn’t get a chance to write a column in the wake of the NFL draft that took place April 23-25. This was kind of the first “live” sporting event as the NFL held a virtual draft and we saw NFL Commissioner, Roger Goodell live from his basement in North Jersey. I have to tell you, that I was skeptical that they would be able to pull it off from a technical standpoint, but it ended up being one of my favorite drafts to watch ever! First of all, I watched all three days, and I can’t remember the last time I did that. Secondly, the Eagles made a splash with an unexpected pick in the second round. Finally, the NFL draft was the epitome of a “captive audience” and both the NFL Network & ESPN did not “fumble the football” for sure! ● Of the ten picks the Eagles made, none got more attention (and criticism) than the 2nd round pick of QB Jalen Hurts from Oklahoma. It’s no secret that the Eagles struggled at wide receiver last year, and many folks were stunned when GM, How-

eventually required surgery. It’s also important to note that Jackson is back this season as well. Selfishly, my favorite Eagles draft pick is linebacker Shaun Bradley in the 6th round at 196 overall. Of course, he went to Temple (my alma mater), so I’m hoping the kid is a pleasant surprise. Hey, he’s already familiar with playing on the field at the Linc and knows his way around the locker rooms there. My last Eagles item involves the schedule. It’s out and the Eagles begin the season at the Washington Redskins on Sunday September 13th. We’re all not sure if the NFL season will begin on time, but they made a big deal about the fact that they will play a 17 week schedule even if they have to walk back the Super Bowl a bit. Along with the usual home and away games versus Washington, Dallas and the NY Giants, the Eagles go to San Francisco for Sunday Night Football in Week 4, play at Pittsburgh in Week 5 and then host Lamar Jackson and Baltimore in Week 6. That’s one tough stretch. The toughest might be later though, as they host Rus-

ie Roseman and the team chose to draft Hurts at #53 overall. Keep in mind the Birds signed Carson Wentz to a four-year, $128 million extension last summer, with $108 of that guaranteed. For his part, Wentz took the high road in his comments after the draft saying “It didn’t really concern me. I think my reaction was kind of understood. I had a feeling they were going to draft somebody just given the way our roster is laid out and trying to get younger and stuff. There’s no concern for me. I think the team showed their investment in me last year.” Maybe he’s not upset because the Roseman and the Eagles also made sure to finally give him some weapons at wide receiver as well. Wentz sure can’t be upset with the fact that the Eagles added wide receiver Jalen Reagor in the first round, traded for Marquise Goodwin, then drafted John Hightower in the fifth round and Quez Watkins in the sixth. All four receivers are known for their speed, something the Eagles noticeably lacked last season after DeSean Jackson suffered a core muscle injury in Week 2, that

sell Wilson and Seattle on Monday Night Football in Week 12, travel to Green Bay and face Aaron Rodgers at Lambeau Field in Week 13, and then host Drew Brees & the Saints in Week 14. No matter how many wins or losses they end up with, you can be sure the Eagles will be facing some marquee QB’s on the other side! Three last things from sports now, as actual LIVE golf took place last weekend in the form of the TaylorMade Driving Relief skins game. Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson squared off against Rickie Fowler and Matthew Wolff at the infamous (and very private) Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach, Florida. The superstars carried their own bags, having one PGA Tour official handle the flagstick, and all involved socially distanced as best as possible while raising millions of dollars for charity. McIlroy and Johnson ended up the winners when the event had to be settled with a closest-tothe-hole competition set up on a shortened 17th hole, but the REAL winners were the American Nurses Foundation and the CDC Foundation, the two primary charities the guys were playing for. Throw in $1 million worth of bonuses and a drive to raise funds on line and via text, and the event generated

more than $5.5 million in charitable donations. Plus, it was fun to see the professionals in shorts just like the weekend warriors you usually see in your area. Speaking of golf, the LPGA is still planning on holding the ShopRite LPGA Classic in Galloway. The annual event that was originally scheduled for May 29-31, will move to July 31st to Aug. 2nd. Again this is actually GOOD news as they are still hoping to play a 2020 version of the ShopRite LPGA event. Lastly, from sports, my heart goes out to all the spring high school athletes…especially the seniors, who never got a chance to play baseball, softball, lacrosse or run track. No one could’ve predicted this is how things would go, and who knows what sports will look like next Fall. A few from entertainment to close things out as the “Survivor – Winners at War” finale was awesome. All three finalists were from New Jersey and police officer Tony Vlachos was crowned the winner in a virtual ceremony where Jeff Probst hosted from his garage. Now I can’t wait for “The Amazing Race”, which begins this week. Don’t expect the Fall TV season to look normal moving forward. No one is shooting anything right now. In fact, seasons had to wrap up

early. Who knows when network TV will return to “normal”. ● Which means I’ve been heavy on Netflix and I even added Amazon Prime for the free 30-day trial so I could see things like “Jack Ryan”, “Bosch” and now “Sneaky Pete”. I plan to watch “Ozark” on Netflix once my free-trial of Amazon Prime is over. With the weather getting warmer, I know we all want to get OUT of the house, but I hope you’ll all continue to stay healthy, stay safe, and listen to the announcements from the governor and at the federal level. It may look a little different, but Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone! Pete has been the local "sports guy" at the Jersey Shore since 2004. After a decade with TV 40, he joined 97.3 ESPN radio to talk Eagles, Phillies, Sixers & Flyers with Mike Gill on "The SportsBash" each day from 2-6 p.m. Pete is proud to be a "voice" for the annual ShopRite LPGA Classic each June, and does emcee work for groups like the National Football Foundation, The Old Grad Awards, and The 200 Club of Atlantic County. You can hear Pete each Tuesday on 97.3 ESPN at 5:30p, and if you see him out & about in the community, he requests that you please say "Hi". Send comments to PBrooksT@aol. com

Charred Jersey Tomato Salad

Vegging at the Shore By Marci Lutsky

M

emorial Day is approaching and for many people that means the start of beach season, or if you are from the Philadelphia area, the start of going “down the shore”. The Jersey shore is not only filled with great beaches, it has some of the best restaurants in the state. I was thrilled to be asked to review The Jersey Shore Cookbook, a collection of recipes from restaurants along the shore. Many of my local favorites are in there including Jon and Patty’s Coffee Bar and Bistro, the Iron Room Restaurant and Knife and Fork Inn. The cookbook is filled with fabulous recipes and gorgeous mouth-watering pictures. It was so hard to choose which recipe to start with but I finally decided on one from the Iron Room Restaurant in Atlantic City for Charred Jersey Tomato Salad with Sweet Corn, Asparagus Tips and Herb Yogurt. You start by cooking up some

corn and asparagus in a skillet. Next fire up the grill and add some quartered tomatoes. I have never grilled tomatoes and let me describe them in one word, amazing! When the tomatoes come off the grill add them to the asparagus and corn. Then make a super simple yogurt sauce. I loved everything about this salad. The charred tomatoes are bursting with flavor and the yogurt sauce is just perfect. This will definitely be going into my regular summer rotation. The Jersey Shore Cookbook was just released and is on sale on Amazon. When I visit people from out of town I like to bring something representative of the Jersey shore. I usually bring salt water taffy but this cookbook is going to be my new gift. It’s fantastic! Disclosure: I received a copy of The Jersey Shore Cookbook for review purposes. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Marci Lutsky is a food blogger at Vegging at the Shore, www. veggingattheshore.com and can be reached at veggingattheshore@ gmail.com.

Ingredients

▶3 ears Jersey sweet corn ▶1 bunch Jersey asparagus ▶3 to 4 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided ▶5 to 6 large Jersey beefsteak tomatoes, quartered ▶Salt and pepper, to taste ▶1 pint good-quality Greek yogurt ▶1 bunch scallions, roughly chopped ▶1/2 bunch oregano, roughly chopped ▶Juice of 2 lemons

Tomatoes on Grill

Instructions

1. With a sharp knife, cut corn kernels off cobs. Chop off the top third of each asparagus stalk; you want only the tips. Reserve remaining asparagus for another use. 2. In a medium saucepan over medium to high heat, warm 1 tablespoon of the olive oil. Saute corn and asparagus for about 3 to 5 minutes, or until cooked but still crisp. Do not overcook. Let cool. (This can be done an hour or so before serving.)

3. Preheat an outdoor grill. Toss tomatoes with salt, pepper, and 2 to 3 tablespoons of the olive oil (just enough to coat them). Place tomatoes on the hottest part of the grill and heat until one side is charred. Immediately toss tomatoes with corn mixture. 4. In a mixing bowl, stir together yogurt, scallions, oregano, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. 5. Serve this salad family-style, with the yogurt sauce alongside, so that guests can dress their salads. Or plate individual portions, with a dollop of yogurt sauce on each.

Sore Throat and Natural Allergy Relief

By Nancy Adler

A

llergies cause pain, itchiness, and even irritation of the throat. Throat pain is the primary symptom of a sore throat. It may get worse when you try to swallow, and you may have difficulties swallowing food and liquids. Even if a sore throat isn’t serious enough for a trip to the doctor, it’s still painful and may prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep. Fortunately, you can use at-home remedies to soothe the pain and irritation that accompany allergies . I feel honey is a great choice for relief when dealing with allergies . Honey mixed in tea or taken on its own is a common household remedy for a sore throat. Studies found that honey was even more effective at taming nighttime coughs than common cough syrups. Honey is one of the most effective healers. As a child my father always told me, gargling with warm salt water can help soothe a sore throat and break down secretions. It’s also known to help kill bacteria in the throat. Make a saltwater solution with a half-teaspoon of salt in a full glass of warm water. Gargle it to help reduce swelling and keep the throat clean. This should be done every three hours or so.

Chamomile tea is naturally soothing. It has long been used for medicinal purposes, like soothing a sore throat. It’s often used for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, which may encourage healing. It’s been proven that inhaling chamomile steam can help relieve symptoms of a cold, including a sore throat. Drinking chamomile tea can offer the same benefit. It can also stimulate the immune system to help your body fight off the allergy or infection that caused your sore throat in the first place. Peppermint is known for its ability to freshen breath. Diluted peppermint oil sprays may also relieve sore throats. Peppermint contains menthol which helps thin mucus and calm sore throats and coughs. Peppermint also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antiviral properties, which may encourage healing. Essential oils can be helpful but never use them without mixing them with a carrier oil such as olive oil, sweet almond oil, or softened coconut oil. For peppermint oil, mix five drops of the essential oil with one ounce of the carrier oil of your choice. Never ingest essential oils. While the saltwater gargle is more commonly used, gargling baking soda mixed with salt water can help relieve a sore throat as well. Gargling this solution can kill bacteria and prevent the growth of yeast and fungi. The national cancer institute recommends and gently swooshing a combination of 1 cup warm water, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, and 1/8 teaspoon of salt. They recommend using the rinse every three hours as needed. Fenugreek has many health ben-

efits. It also has many forms. You can eat fenugreek seeds, use the oil, or drink fenugreek tea . Fenugreek tea is a natural remedy for sore throats. Research demonstrates the healing powers of fenugreek. It can relieve pain and kill bacteria that cause irritation or inflammation. Fenugreek is also an effective antifungal. Pregnant women should avoid fenugreek. Licorice root has long been used to Treat allergy and sore throat . It's most effective when mixed with water to create a solution for gargling. However, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid this remedy . Like marshmallow root, Slippery elm has a mucus-like substance in it. When mixed with water, it forms a slick gel that coats and soothes the throat. To use, pour boiling water over powdered bark, stir, and drink. You may also find that slippery elm lozenges help. Slippery Elm traditional remedy for sore throat, but more research is needed. Keep in mind, it may decrease the absorption of other medication you take. Apple Cider Vinegar is a natural antibacterial remedy. If allergies are super kicked up try diluting 1 to 2 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar in one cup of water and gargle with it. Then take a small sip of the mixture, and repeat the whole process one to two times per hour. Make sure to drink lots of water in between the gargling sessions. There are many different ways of using Apple Cider Vinegar to treat sore throats, depending on the severity of the illness and also your body’s sensitivity to vinegar. It is best to first consult your doctor or healthcare practitioner.

Garlic also has natural antibacterial properties. It contains allicin, an organosulfer compound known for its ability to fight off infections. Studies have shown that taking a garlic supplement on a regular basis can help prevent the common cold virus. Adding fresh garlic to your diet is also a way of gaining its antimicrobial properties. Your grandmother might have told you to suck on a clove of garlic to sooth a sore throat. Because garlic has many healing actions, you might try this, though you may want to brush your teeth afterward to protect your teeth from enzymes and improve your breath. Although not scientifically proven, ingesting cayenne mixed with warm water and honey can help with pain relief for sore throats. Remember that an initial burning sensation is common. Cayenne should not be taken if you have open sores in your mouth. Start with just a few drops of hot sauce or a light sprinkle of cayenne, as both can be very hot. Trying out some of these natural remedies may help you feel better more quickly and save you a trip to the doctor’s office. To feel your best, make sure you also drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest. Nancy Adler is a certified nutritionist and practitioner in Linwood. The Legend of The Jersey Shore Mermaid

by Christina Sciarretta

A

ccording to Jersey Shore folklore, magical mermaid treasures are hidden in the sands of the South Jersey Shore beaches, meant to be found by young girls with true mermaid hearts. Local surfers report having seen glimpses of the shimmering mermaid tail, playing with the dolphins along the coast on every South Jersey Beach. This is the story of that mermaid. A long long time ago, a beautiful shimmering mermaid, named Waverly lived at the depths of the sea off of the Atlantic City Coast. Waverly would swim up and down the coast of the South Jersey Shore, from Brigantine to Cape May, collecting magical sea glass and unique shells and stones from the bottom of the ocean floor, dreaming of one day getting to speak to a human girl. She was fascinated

with humans- how they moved about on the beaches on their legs, dancing and jumping and running. One day, as Waverly was collecting her treasures in the sea, she came upon a young surfer girl weeping on the jetty. Waverly knew that she was not allowed to speak to humans, but she had dreamt of this moment for so oh, long. She tried to keep swimming, but something in her heart was pulling her back. She swam in circles trying to talk herself out of speaking to the little girl, but her heart was so broken for her. At last, she decided to follow her heart. “Maybe this is my chance to finally meet a human girl!” she thought. She clutched her satchel of treasures and swam up to the jetty. The surfer girl, who’s name was Annabella, was startled when she saw Waverly, but Waverly quickly reached her hand out to Annabella to show her that she meant her no harm. Annabella crept closer to the edge of the jetty and sat down slowly, mesmerized by the magical beauty of the shimmering mermaid. “Little surfer girl, I could not help but overhear your weeping. Tell me why you are so sad.” Waverly asked, propping her arms up onto the jetty.

“I am having a terrible day. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. I haven’t been able to catch a wave, even though I have worked so hard, because I am too scared. The other surfers made fun of me. I feel worthless. I am discouraged, and my heart is so heavy.” Annabella replied, as she dropped her chin once again and began to weep. Waverly’s heart felt heavy for the girl. She reached into her satchel and pulled out two pieces of treasure from her collection. She closed her eyes, sprinkled some sand, and kissed the treasures. “Open your hand” she said to Annabella, drawing nearer to her. Annabella opened her hand and Waverly began to place each treasure in her palm, one at a time. “Annabella, I have collected these magical trea-

sures from the depths of the sea. They are full of power, so you must keep them safe, and they only work on those with a true Mermaid Heart. Can you promise me that if I give these treasures to you, that you will keep them safe?” Waverly asked. Annabella lifted her eyes and gazed at the magical treasures in amazement. She nodded sheepishly. Waverly placed a piece of smooth sea glass into Annabella’s palm. “This one,” Waverly said with a smile, “will give you courage. A true mermaid is always courageous. Nothing can scare you if you have this magical piece of treasure. I bet this will give you the courage you need to catch that wave.” She placed a smooth stone in her palm next. “This stone will give you the power to achieve your wildest dreams. I know this is true, because for my whole life, I’ve dreamt of talking to a human girl. Every time I'd find a magical sea stone like this, I’d pray that I would get the chance to talk to a human girl one day. With this magic stone, my dream has finally come true. I get to talk with you! And now, I am giving it to you. With this magic stone, you will ride the largest, scariest waves in the

world and you will show those surfers that you have true mermaid power.” Annabella wiped her tears. Her lips began to form a smile. Waverly began searching in her satchel. “Ah ha!” She exclaimed, “ I have found the most magical treasure of all, and I am giving this to you as well.” She drew a magnificent shell from her satchel, sprinkled a bit of glittering sand, and kissed the little shell. “This treasure”, she said, “will give you a kind heart. This is the most important treasure of all, Annabella. A kind heart is very difficult to have sometimes, especially when others aren’t kind to you, but for those who have a kind heart, come incredible blessings. These are the three treasures that every mermaid must have: courage to face any fear that comes your way, the ability and willingness to chase and live out your dreams, and a super kind heart that always turns around and swims back to love the broken-hearted.” Annabella looked down at the three treasures in her hand and then looked back at Waverly with tears welling up in her eyes again, except this time, they were tears of joy. “Thank you Waverly. I don’t know what I did to deserve these beautiful treasures, but I promise you I will keep them forever. With these treasures, I am getting back into the water and I will take that wave. You have brought

overwhelming joy to my broken heart.” Waverly watched, delighted, as Annabella surfed waves, big and small for the rest of the afternoon, with not one ounce of fear. When evening came, Waverly swam off with a full heart, to collect more treasures. As Waverly swam back home, she noticed that her satchel was heavy. She had collected so many treasures that her satchel was completely full. “Why should I keep all of these treasures to myself?” she thought, “There is a whole coast of little girls who need these precious treasures and the good that they bring both now and in the future. I know just what I’ll do.” Jersey Shore Natives say that every Winter, Waverly hides her treasures all over the beaches of the South Jersey Shore, in hopes that little girls with true mermaid hearts

will find them, along with kindness, courage, and the drive to chase their dreams. You too, may be lucky enough to find the magical pieces of Waverly’s treasure, if you search the coast of the South Jersey Shore. Not all seashells, seaglass, and stones are magical treasures from Waverly. If you find one of Waverly’s secret treasures, you will know in your heart- your heart will begin to do mermaid flips! Should that happen, pick up the magic treasure and keep it somewhere super safe. If it is a sea glass treasure, it will give you courage. If it is a sea stone treasure, it will enable you to chase and live out your wildest dreams, and if it is a magical seashell, it will instill in you a kind heart. Should you be lucky enough to find all three, remember to keep them safe and close to your heart, so you too,

can be a Jersey Shore Mermaid. Find your magical mermaid treasures hidden in the sands of the beaches at the Jersey Shore this Summer and join the Facebook Group: The Legend of the South Jersey Shore Mermaid to share photos of your found treasures and hear reports of mermaid sightings! FROM THE AUTHOR This story is dedicated to my beloved, courageous, kind daughter & nieces: Avery, Aaliyah, Alayna, Ava, & Cecelia & to all of the young girls at the Jersey Shore. May you always remain hungry, humble and smart and may your spirit always remain salty. You are loved beyond measure.

Lean and Lengthen with Yoga, Pilates & Barre

Shore Fit By Bonnie Miller

I

’m really all in when it comes to switching up your workouts to achieve maximum benefits. If you solely do one type of workout, your body will get used to it and results will plateau. If you’re a cardio fanatic and your exercise of choice is running or a spin class, you’ll need to add strength training to compliment your cardiovascular program and vice versa. Another important component of exercise that sometimes gets ignored is lengthening the body’s muscles through stretching. With so many choices available to us today, let’s delve head first into the three forms of exercise that can get us that long, lean toned physique. Will it be Yoga, Pilates or Barre? One of the three may be the perfect fit for you or could it possibly be a combination

of all three? Yoga, Pilates, and Barre all provide an effective workout. They all yield positive, physical results and help tone and sculpt lean muscles. Increased flexibility is a huge gain and many people prefer these types of workouts if they are nursing a past injury. This tends to happen from overused muscle groups. Improving core strength, posture and balance is especially important as we age. First and foremost, start with personal awareness of your present level of fitness and what goals you have. This will help you decide which method will benefit you the most. This is where it becomes personal and the choice depends upon many factors. Which one is the right fit for you? Let’s dive into the basic methodology of each and explore the benefits, similarities and differences. We shall begin with yoga, since that is the one that I’m most familiar with and have practiced it on and off throughout the years. I’ve also recently become certified in it as well. Yoga, when translated means “to control or “unite. Many yoga classes today focus on the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Yoga concentrates on body awareness, breathing and stretching. Typically, a yoga class in-

volves different types of breathing and stretching exercises while engaging in a variety of yoga positions. Yoga can also work more than one muscle group at a time and can be quite challenging. Performing a flow of sun salutations or holding a pose for a long period of time can really create the heat. I’ve had many sweat sessions on my mat. Yoga offers numerous benefits. The physical benefits include increased flexibility, muscle strength and tone. A regular yoga practice of 2-3 times per week can decrease stiffness, joint pain, improve posture and balance. It can also prevent injury and has many mental benefits as well. And couldn’t we all use a reduction in stress level these days? Yoga is also appropriate for all ages and fitness levels. Pilates is a fitness method that was developed by Joseph Pilates in Germany during World War I. Originally

intended to help rehabilitate injured soldiers, Pilates broadened his method to help people of all walks of life. His method stressed the use of the mind to control the muscles and was often used to help heal and build strength in individuals who were recovering from injuries. A typical Pilates class usually lasts around 45 minutes to an hour. Just like yoga, you’ll need a fitness mat and most likely be barefoot during workouts. Pilates classes involve a series of positions and body movements, all with different names. Deep concentration is required to place your body into the various positions and hold it there. Modifications on these positions can be made to accommodate people of all abilities and fitness levels. Pilates uses your body weight for resistance and focuses on working both small and large groups of muscles. Over time, core strength, flexibility and muscle tone will begin to increase. Maximum results are also achieved by working out at least 3 days a week. Although the movements are small and slow, Pilates provides an intense full-body workout. The physical benefits of Pilates include an increase in muscle strength and tone without

creating bulk. The increase in deep core muscle strength helps to make your abdominal muscles look tight and toned. It also improves your flexibility and posture, which can decrease your chances of injuring yourself. The mental benefits of Pilates include an increase in the ability to focus. It takes a great deal of concentration to coordinate your breath and body position during workouts. A clear mind also reduces stress levels, which translates to an improvement in your overall health. Pilates is great for individuals of all fitness levels. Those who enjoy yoga that may be looking for a more vigorous core workout can benefit from Pilates. Now onto the popular workout program that is rapidly gaining recognition and followers is the Barre method. I actually am new to Barre but thoroughly enjoyed the few classes that I have taken, so I decided to get certified in Barre Above this past April. It’s always good to add to your chest of tools. This fitness program is essentially a mixture of ballet-inspired exercises, yoga and Pilates. Barre derives from the Lotte Berk Method founded in 1959 in London by its namesake, a German dancer looking to stay fit while nursing a back injury. In the barre fitness method, a dancer’s bar and a mat are used. Even a chair will suffice if your gym is not equipped with a bar. While an intense and effective workout method, no previous dance experience is required. The barre method is accepting of all fitness and ability levels just like yoga and pilates. Barre also uses your own body

weight for resistance and focuses on small, deliberate movements that focus on specific groups of muscles, specifically muscles that aren’t used in other workouts. Muscles are worked to the point of fatigue, and then stretched for relief. It’s such a great combination. Proper form, body alignment and posture is stressed, which in turn leads to an overall strengthening of core muscles and the appearance of an aligned, lean body. It can be quite intense, with classes lasting on average 60 minutes. Increased stamina is achieved by allowing very little rest between activities so muscles stay engaged. Talk about feeling the burn! Barre workouts require minimal equipment. Sometimes a soft exercise ball may be used during leg workouts and you will also be barefoot or wear open toed socks that have grips on the bottom. Perhaps one of the best benefits of barre is that it’s fun! It incorporates the use of upbeat music and engaging choreography. When working out is fun and enjoyable, your chances of staying with the program greatly increase. The barre method also offers quick results. Barre helps strengthen and tone your muscles without increasing bulk, and it improves your posture. It also increases cardiovascular endurance and metabolism, which helps to quickly burn calories. Regular barre workouts have benefits for the older adult because they can increase your bone density, which can help prevent conditions like osteoporosis. They can also help you avoid injury. The small isometric muscle movements used during

barre classes build muscle strength without putting a strain on ligaments and tendons like other fitness training methods can. The mental benefits of barre are similar to yoga and Pilates, as it effectively increases mind-body awareness and mental clarity. Focus and concentration are required. By allowing your mind to concentrate solely on your technique will increase feelings of relaxation and also decrease stress levels. Let the endorphins be released! Barre workouts are appropriate for individuals of all fitness levels. It is ideal for individuals who wish to improve their core strength and posture. Many of us often sit in a hunched position at a desk or in front of a computer for

long periods, and it takes its toll over time. Barre is appropriate for individuals who are seeking an intense but low-impact workout that will offer quick results. Barre is also best for people who wish to work out their whole body every time they work out. Barre’s focus on small, isolated groups of muscles means that you will most likely be sore after each workout. All three workout methods provide physical and mental benefits. They also improve sleep, reduce stress and improve your overall sense of well-being. Exercising regularly can help you live a healthier, happier life. All workout programs require a fair amount of commitment in order to achieve maximum results and your level of commitment to any fitness program hinges greatly upon your level of enjoyment. This means to choose wisely because if you enjoy it, you will most likely stick with it. I always say that fun is key and people will most likely return to your class as long as you deliver a great workout and have fun while doing it. Mental Health and Wellness in Trying Times

The Light with Raymond Tyler

O

ver the last few weeks, the news has reported that the numbers of Covid-19 cases are higher in Black Communities. These same reports also say the rate of death is greater in Black Communities. In an effort to help bring awareness and information, I will be reporting on the effects of The Covid-19 Crisis in Atlantic City until it is resolved. This week we look at the effect of Covid-19 reporting and the lockdown on mental health locally. People of color make up more of the front line workers in hospitals and are not only at risk, but place their family at risk after their shifts are done. So being off of work does not always bring peace of mind. Also when looking at mental health, Covid-19 has taken away access to the church which until now has been a refuge for the Black community during almost every other crisis.

Tamu Lane is a licensed therapist who has worked for more than a decade as a counselor for The Atlantic County Women’s Center. Lane currently teaches an online master class on caring for your mental health and practices out of her own offices. I collected questions from community members and she took the time to offer her professional insight. Question: Since this lock down has started, I have seen people that were friends almost celebrate other people getting sick or wishing death on communities that are opening up. Were my friends always like this? Tamu: People are afraid of catching this virus and dying. Fear is a scary thing and it makes people who were once loving and kind, do and say things that they normally would have never done or said. Fear brings out the worst in many of us. We could find ourselves lashing out at people for no reason other than being fearful of the unknown. So, the answer to this question is, no, it just means that they are scared, and they don’t know any other way of expressing themselves. Question: Since this started I now have high levels of anxiety. I barely sleep and when I do I have bad dreams? I wake up at 3am and think "Oh my God, there's still 20 hours left in the day!" I

find myself on the verge of a panic attack because I don't see an end in sight. Help! What are some tips for dealing with these feelings? Tamu: This is hard time for many people and anxiety and panic attacks are more common in the world today. We first must be patient with ourselves because right now, this is our new norm. So, we have to come to a place of acceptance first because if we don’t accept what is happening we will continue to have these attacks. Next, remove unhealthy behaviors from your life that is doable currently. You can cut off the television and news feeds from your phone, tablets, and computers. Watching constant news is causing a lot of these feelings in us. If a person needs to see the news, I tell them to turn it on either in the morning or at 12pm, watch it and let it go. The news is very repetitive so there is no need to feed your brains with this continued bad news. Also never watch the news at night because you go to bed with these visuals and words in your head and they come out in your dreams or you cannot sleep. Let’s be vigilant in taking care of ourselves. Another is to seek to remove negative conversations and/or people from your space if you can. That just feeds your anxiety. I am very clear about the words, if you can, because I do understand that some of the negativity that you are faced with might be coming from someone in your home, so it's hard to remove yourself from that space. And this is when our voice must be heard in letting them know that you prefer not to be a part of the negative conversation because it is causing you anxiety. But if you can remove the person or the conversations, this is especially important to do. Another, believe it or not, is to watch what you are eating during this time because sugar and other processed foods can cause us to have increased anxiety. So, eating a more balanced diet full of vegetables, beans, fruits, and a lot of water can truly help to lower those feelings. Another important factor is getting exercise of some kind everyday to increase those endorphins. You can also use a friend that you know is healthy and supportive to process those feelings in order to help you lower your anxiety. Prayer and meditation are also a huge important factor during this time as well. Question: I did not see a lot of people before the lock down. I looked forward to seeing my family and a few friends on Sunday's and having dinner. I miss my family, my friends and calling on the phone is not the same. What can I do? Tamu: I understand that missing your family and not seeing them is hard but once again we must come into an

acceptance of what is going on in our world today. But what is so great about the time that we live in is that we have devices such as Zoom, Facebook live, and other mechanisms to be able to connect with our families and see their faces. This is a time where we must take advantage of these tools that we have. Another thing is that we can now become creative in how we connect with one another such as having both sides cook dinner and then while we eat our meal, we can meet and see each other through the phone or the computer as if we were next to one another. We can also do social distancing drive by’s which my family and I have done on several occasions just so that we can see each other’s faces. Let’s not look at this as if we are stuck but yet we have an opportunity to do things differently and appreciate them so that when the world does open back up, we will hopefully be more appreciative of one another. Question: I am 45 years old. My feet, back and arms have been aching for years. Likewise, I struggle through allergy season each year. However, every time I sneeze, I have to convince myself that I am not going die or worse yet infect my family. How do I calm myself? Tamu: This is a common feeling amongst people today because we are so afraid. As you have mentioned, you have allergies, and this is one of the worst times of the year for allergies. You also mentioned that you have had back, arm and feet pain for years. So, in knowing this, it’s about breathing, calming your mind and putting things into perspective realizing that you have allergies and you sneeze every year this time. And that you have been dealing with pain before this virus came along. So, if you say this to yourself enough, it will hopefully bring clarity and perspective back to you and know that you are doing your best to protect you and your family. Just breathe and not allow your mind to run away! The only one that can control your thoughts are you and self-talk can either damage us or heal us. I would challenge you to change your self-talk to more positive thinking so that it can heal you and not stress you. A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

Finish A Round In Under 2 Hours

Orderly Disorder

Senior Moments by Charles P. Eberson

I

have piles and they are irritating. My wife has told me numerous times that I have to take care of them. That they are not good for me and I would be more at peace if I just dealt with the piles on a regular basis. She even offered her help. I am not talking about the medical condition of piles, more commonly known as hemorrhoids but something even more insidious. It is my stacks of papers, mail, bills and publications that has my better half clamoring for a solution. What makes things worse is that my wife is one of the most organized people I know. Her recent career as an administrative secretary was a case study in organization and efficiency. At any time, she was able to lay her hands on important confidential materials much to the amazement of her supervisor and colleagues which, I am sure, contributes to the irritation she feels about my piles. I, on the other hand put things in piles. This used to be a bone of contention when at times the “I’ll get to this later” pile on the dining room table would tilt like the leaning tower of Pisa. When the next piece of mail is gingerly placed on top like a reversal of the game Jenga and the pile falls over, it is time for me to go through the contents. In an effort to extricate myself from the situation, I reminded her of my best friend, a very successful estate attorney who had piles of folders, articles, issues of the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, etc. on the floor and most level surfaces around his condo. My wife reminded me that I was not a successful attorney who

lived alone. In the interest of marital harmony, I have moved the pile into my home office where it has spawned multiple smaller piles. Years ago, I conceded to try it my wife’s way. We got a file cabinet with hangers and a box of manila folders and made it a joint effort of organizing, labeling and placing the files in the hangers. Each pile was gone through and broken down into categories that matched the folders and gradually the piles disappeared. But that did not stem the tide of incoming magazines, statements and other documents that grew into a “To Be Filed” pile. Some documents and statements didn’t have a folder assigned to them so other folders had to be named and filed. This all seemed to be time consuming additional work to which my wife told me that it would all be worth it in the end and I would save time looking for things. Clearly, our brains work differently and the filing system became a thing of the past. If I am looking for paperwork, I only have to consult a couple of piles. Everything goes in those piles so I know exactly where to look. To the untrained eye, this may appear haphazard but to me it is a finely tuned system. Occasionally, a little treasure shows up in those piles; something I had long forgot about. I would rush in to wherever my wife was excitingly present it to her with the exclamation, “Look what I found” only to be greeted with a roll of the eyes. Does anyone want a perfectly good wooden filing cabinet? Slightly used. Charles Eberson has been in the newspaper business for over 25 years. Errors, Mistakes and Goofs about each or these, so you can see I only scratched the surface. As for mistakes and goofs, I’ll leave them for next weeks’ article, but I guess whether it’s a mistake or goof is probably the opinion of the reader (and this writer) so I’ll let you be the judge.

Shore Collectibles By Douglas Keefe

In almost any industry or business, making a mistake can be annoying and out right costly. Not so with collectibles where the opposite is true. In most cases the error is more (sometimes much more) valuable than the original. There is a sub-culture of collectors of coins, currency, stamps, and cards that actively pursue finding, and in some cases discovering something that wasn’t made as designed. I categorized these as errors, where something went wrong in the production. Mistakes are where someone did something they should not have and goofs where something really dumb occurred.

Mis-alinement Error

Let us start with errors and some examples as pertains to collectibles. Coin errors occur during the minting process and examples can be such things as the blanks that were to be struck as coins either slip through untouched or are partially struck or struck multiple times. Clad coins sometimes are missing the front or back nickel coating resulting in the coin having a front or back of all copper. A more dramatic error is what is called a double die, that is when a die is being made, the hub creating the die shifts causing the appearance of doubling on the die which then is struck on every coin. And then there is the case where a mintmark was to be added to a die, but for some reason wasn’t, creating a “no mintmark” error.

Perforation Error

Currency errors are the result of something going wrong in the printing process, examples are mismatched serial numbers, serial numbers missing, or partially visible and serial numbers printed on the reverse of the note or upside down. Errors known as wet transfers occur when the sheets of currency are stacked after printing. Because the ink is still wet, a sheet of blotter paper is to be placed between the sheets of currency. When this isn’t done or only done partially covering the notes, the ink from the top sheet will bleed onto the sheet underneath. And sometimes a corner of the sheet will fold over and be printed, leaving the intended portion blank and the other side with the design. Cutting errors also can occur. Currency is typically printed in 16 or 32 note sheets and when those sheets are cut to singles, the cut can be off to the point of an adjacent note showing. Stamps are susceptible to printing errors also. They can include such errors as missing a part of the design due to no ink, part of the design inverted and sometimes the sheet of stamps actually printed twice. Stamps originally were sold in sheets and were perforated to be separated so they can be used singly. (Now they are die cut and self-stick). The perforations were added after the stamps are printed and can be out of alignment with the perforations going through the design or can be missing altogether, creating imperforated stamps.

Mis-cut Card

Cards too are printed and as such are subject to some of the same errors as currency and stamps, which include missed designs, double designs, and mis-cut cards. This by no means is meant to include all types of errors that occur, it just touches on some of the more common ones and can give you an idea as to what to watch out for when going through your collectibles. Tips for Protecting Your Family Against Bug Bites

F

rom hikes to picnics to relaxing in the hammock, nothing ruins summer fun quite as fast as bug bites. Unfortunately, bug bites are more than just a nuisance. They can trigger allergic reactions in some people, and may transmit diseases like Zika Virus, Dengue Fever, West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease. Taking these precautions this summer can help the whole family stay bite-free.

families, Natrapel Tick & Insect Repellant uses the CDC recommended 20 percent Picaridin active ingredient and provides up to 12 hours of protection against mosquitoes and ticks. This formula is also safe on gear and comes in variety of sprays and wipes for easy application. For outdoor enthusiasts, DEET is the best-selling active ingredient in the U.S. For a trusted choice, consider Ben’s Tick & Insect Repellent,

Standing water can become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Walk around your property after rainfall or after watering the lawn and take note of areas that are not draining properly or are catching and holding water in objects like garden buckets, lids and frisbees. The smallest puddle of water can breed mosquitos. Drain everything you find. CHOOSE THE RIGHT BUG SPRAY

Lyme Disease expert, Dr. Michael Jacobs, MD says “When shopping for insect repellents look for those with the active ingredients DEET or Picaridin, two of the most effective active ingredients at preventing bug bites. Stronger concentrations of the active ingredient in the formula will give you more hours of protection. For example, a 10 percent DEET or 7 percent Picaridin formula provides one to two hours of protection, while higher concentrations provide protection for eight hours and longer.” Safe for pregnant and breast-feeding women, and a popular choice for

COVER UP AND BE SMART

Make your skin less vulnerable to bug bites with smart fashion choices. When outdoors, particularly in wooded areas, wear loose-fitting long sleeves and pants. Light colors are a good choice, as mosquitoes seem to prefer darker clothing. WHY ME?

Have you ever felt you were being eaten alive by mosquitoes, while everyone else around you remained unaffected? There are many factors that can make one person more appealing than another to mosquitoes. And some are beyond one’s control, such as blood type and genetics. However, mosquitoes are attracted to sweat, so don’t forget the deodorant. They also seem to prefer beer drinkers, according to a study by Japanese researchers.
