n 1986, the popular band the "Police" sang the hit song "Don't stand so close to me."

24 years later, the real police will enforce it! Social distancing is rule number one in new world order.

Initially, I thought COVID-19 would pose a brief interruption to life as we knew it. However, seven weeks later, the vast majority of businesses remain closed and schools will not be reopening this year. We sit at home, still quarantined, with minimal signs of improvement. A return to pre-pandemic life is certain to be gradual. Donned in our masks, it's hard to imagine that until recently, we blew out candles on birthday cake before serving it to our friends and loved ones.

With so much time at home, what can we do to keep ourselves busy and entertained? Here are some things that are working for me.

Quarantine is definitely an easier pill to swallow when the weather is pleasant. There is walking, biking and my newest favorite activity, gardening. I also love to walk along the beach. Thankfully many (but not all) beaches are open for walking.

Rainy days seem twice as long.

I always start out with some grand goals such as reorganizing billing systems, figuring out website designs, etc.. In reality, I typically end up doing puzzles and paint-bynumber. I also discovered yoga on YouTube and envision myself trying zumba next.

On the upside, I have enjoyed having our two daughters home.

One is finishing her last semester of college and another working full time, reporting virtually on the Pennsylvania Senate for C-span. My dogs have never had it better, surrounded by their humans and scoring multiple walks per day.

In this issue of Shore Local Newsmagazine, check Steffen Klenk's article on how we can access our public libraries, even from a distance, for a lot of entertainment choices. Also check out some binge-able series on Netflix and Hulu on page 27. Tammy Thornton offers timely tips and ideas for the garden and if you enjoy baking, try Marci Lutsky's recipe for bread. It looks so delicious and easy that I truly can't wait to try it.

A Plan to Rebuild, Reopen and Recover

I

t was heartbreaking to see so many of our casino families with no money waiting in food lines simply to feed their children, because unemployment has been a complete disaster.

Atlantic County needs to act now to develop a concrete plan that follows the President’s guidelines to open up our economy so our families can get back to work. Consistent with those federal guidelines, our plan should be predicated on the criteria of downward trends for flu-like and COVID-19 symptoms within a 14 day period; a downward trajectory of documented cases and positive tests as a percentage of total tests within 14 days; and the ability to treat all patients without crisis care and put into place a robust testing program for healthcare workers. Governor Murphy’s “The Road Back” plan is similar to the federal guidelines in that we need to see a 14 day downward trend in health metrics, robust testing, and hospitals stepping down from crisis care.

Obviously, we cannot open our economy until we fall within the federal and State parameters. Once we do fall within those parameters, we have to be ready to re-open, which means our plan has to be written immediately, which is

why I am working in a bi-partisan manner with my colleagues in the Senate, County Executive Levinson, Freeholder Chair Formica, our local mayors, and business associations to prepare a plan.

Despite the fact these health parameters apply broadly across the country and our State, our economic recovery plan must recognize the differences and unique circumstances that exist between our county and our State and the differences between our county and each of our local communities. Clearly, we have to treat New Jersey differently than Pennsylvania, Atlantic County differently than Bergen County, and Folsom differently than Atlantic City. One size does not fit all.

First, any recovery plan must acknowledge South Jersey, fortunately, has faced less of the brunt of the pandemic than North Jersey. According to Rutgers University, the rate of positive cases per thousand residents is lower in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, and Gloucester counties than in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Passaic counties. We also have relatively fewer hospitalizations in our region.

Equally important, Atlantic County has a testing and tracing system already in place.

The University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation is showing Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey have all passed the peak for deaths and use of hospital resources, which is why the Institute believes these States can prudently reopen in May.

Second, as I earlier noted, any recovery plan must acknowledge Atlantic County’s economy is unique. Obviously, the needs of New Jersey’s Route One Corridor are not the same as the intersection of Atlantic City Expressway and the Garden State Parkway.

Atlantic County does not have the same yearround economy since it is more reliant on the seasonal tourism industry and the jobs it creates than other parts of the State outside of our region.

According to Stockton University, our county is looking at a $5 billion loss in regional gross domestic product. Three months can make or break our year. Not opening for the summer of 2020, even partially, is effectively shutting our region down until the summer of 2021. We need a finalized plan ready to go the moment we meet the health parameters.

Third, we have to rebuild our economy from the ground up, which is why we need a plan to do just that. Since each municipality in Atlantic County is unique, each town can use their tax rolls and mercantile certificate lists while working with local business associations, to reach out to their businesses on how they can re-open and operate while protecting the health of their employees and customers, consistent with guidelines set forth by the federal and State governments.

Once the towns receive their individual business plans, they can submit their municipal plan to the county for review. Atlantic County

can then submit the plan to the Governor’s Restart and Recovery Commission.

Finally, the plan to help our economy recover must have faith that people will do the right thing. It is in businesses owners’ interest to keep their employees, their customers, and themselves healthy and safe by following the guidelines and taking sensible and, perhaps, innovative precautions. Each municipality and county knows best when to open and manage our economy from our beaches, our boardwalks, and our golf courses to our construction sites and our professional practices. I am also confident families will take the appropriate responsibility by wearing masks, spacing themselves out accordingly on our beaches and in stores, and staying home even if they feel slightly under the weather.

With businesses which have temporarily closed teetering on the edge of not being able to reopen when restrictions are lifted, our working families need to see a light at the end of this tunnel. A bottom up plan developed under the county’s umbrella with our municipalities addressing the unique needs of our region is the best way to move forward while reassuring families they have a future where they can work, raise their children, and save for retirement.

Again, my personal thanks to the our front line workers and businesses helping all of us as best they can to get all of us through this difficult time.

Hunkered Down Together: Are we our Pet’s Peeve?

T

here are but a few things in this world that are unquestioned and widely regarded as fact.

It took several decades, but I finally found one. Not even Ebenezer Scrooge could ruin this incontrovertible piece of logic.

I discovered that rare gem that ostensibly holds our society together: The love we share for our furry, feathery, scaly, slimy, or hard-shelled friends.

Until now, I selfishly believed I gave my cat the life he deserved. Cardboard boxes as far as the eye can see, strategically placed hair ties on the wood floor to bat around, food, water, treats love, and a home to stay in.

And now, just like that, we are home.

We’re staying home a lot. We’re home all day, every day and all night, every night.

Getting up to get ready for work, is a thing of the past. If I so desire, I could turn off the alarm setting on my phone

(nobody uses alarm clocks anymore).

Besides, who needs an alarm when your rambunctious feline sits in the middle of your room, staring at you, almost willing you to wake up?

Our pets have taken on many new roles as we shelter in place. Everyday my cat wears many different hats. Though some hats may be cute, I’m sure many pets aren’t happy being thrust into their new roles as we socially distance from everyone but them. And most are more vocal about their feelings than they have ever been before.

They have become more than just our most loved and loyal family member; they have been promoted to jobs that were never in their job description.

They are now our therapists, our sounding boards, and coworkers. They are our board game opponents and even our fashion advisors. ‘Which daytime sweats should I wear, Kitten? Is it time to put on my nighttime pajamas, or should I just stick with the ones I’ve been wearing all day?’ He always has the right answers.

So, since this pandemic and its rules of social isolation, minimal human contact and bedazzled face masks is hard on us all, let’s take some of the emotional burden off our pets by giving them a

little break from the constant overload of attention that we are showering them with.

We humans have myriad forms of entertainment. There’s Netflix, Hulu, some seriously heated games of Monopoly and several games of Jenga that may or may not be the deal-breaker of my (human) relationship after this is all over.

But when binging movies, television shows and food just isn’t enough to satisfy our human need to feel needed, let’s give ourselves permission to smother our pets with 24/7 attention and take thousands of pictures no one else will ever want to see.

And, since we’re there, why not give ourselves a pat on the backs for being the self-sacrificing, altruistic humans we are by tending to these animals that ‘rescued us.’

The experts say that, like humans, pets need their sense of normalcy and stability, too. So after this is over, we’ll

all take a nice long vacation and our pets can “Risky Business” it up.

Until then, however, I’d like to thank the following places my cat has found to hide so we can’t smother him with love: ● In the full laundry hamper of dirty laundry. ● Tucked in the farthest corner of the closet. ● The bathroom sink. ● In a pile of clean ready to be folded laundry. ● A Trader Joe’s bag. ● The bathtub. ● The sock drawer. ● Inside the dryer.

I think he’s trying to tell us something, but overall, he is getting really good at sitting in the middle of the floor, giving us suspicious looks while making us feel guilty when we eat something we shouldn’t be.

Welcome to their new normal. I’m pretty sure my pet never asked for one of his own.

Views from the Shore: The Signs of the Times

I

’ve met some incredible people over the years, but none who have been more courageous and committed than the team at Shore Medical Center who are on the frontlines of this pandemic.

These workers, including the doctors, nurses, clinical support staff, security officers, EVS workers, plant operations, and dietary staff are truly Shore Healthcare Heroes.

When Shore heeded the direction of the government to shut down non-emergent services, we did so to fully concentrate every possible resource on protecting these heroes and caring for COVID-19 patients.

This shutdown of services, combined with the preparation of the facility and purchasing of PPEs, took a financial toll on the hospital, so we reached out to our community for support. We have been blessed with generosity, as community members and local businesses have donated money and supplies to help Shore in

its time of need.

I would like to share with you the inspiring efforts of one community leader, and his name is Chris Monihan of Monihan Realty in Ocean City. We are extremely grateful to Chris, his wife Andrea, and their two daughters, Renee and Maren, for what they have done for our hospital.

In late March, Chris reached out with an idea to raise money for Shore Medical Center. He and his neighbors, the Bickings family - who have a close friend who is an ER doctor at Shore – told me that they were going to sell yard signs and donate all of the proceeds to the hospital to offset costs for PPEs for staff and other expenses related to the care of COVID-19 patients. When he said he would pay for the cost of the signs and deliver them, I was blown away.

He had such passion and energy for the project, and it continues to grow.

“We are very excited about the success of the fundraiser,” said Chris Monihan. “We didn't exactly know how many signs we would sell and are surprised by the overwhelming support and community camaraderie it has created. I first ordered 200

signs and was hoping to sell all of them and raise $5,000. To date we have sold 300 signs and raised close to $15,000 and I just ordered 100 more signs. “ Chris continues “People seem to really enjoy the signs and are eager to buy a sign to show it off on their front lawns. We have been seeing groups of neighborhoods and streets where several residents all buy signs

together after spreading the word.

We have delivered signs to many towns throughout Cape May and Atlantic counties and are very grateful for everyone's donations. We are continuing to sell and deliver signs each day and ask for anyone who can, to please donate to the Shore Medical Center's Covid-19 Fund and they will get one of the signs for their front lawns.”

Staying Connected with our Public Libraries

ibraries are more than just places to learn; they are a beacon for our own communities. It can be a haven for those who want to read a favorite book, search for information, learn something new or listen to an exciting thriller. Our local public libraries are there when we need them most, and while the physical doors remain closed during this time, there are still many ways you can stay connected.

As local libraries continue to offer many services to the public, Ocean City’s Library Director Karen Mahar says their staff has been doing their absolute best to bring the library to their patrons. “We had to shift gears and look for new ways to help people utilize the library.” Mahar wants people to know that “During these unprecedented times, we want our patrons to know that the public library is still here for them.” And word

has been spreading. The circulation rates along Ocean City Library’s digital products went up by 1,700 pieces over the last month.

With an active library card, patrons can access a world of information directly from the comfort of home.

Services such as NewsBank allow library patrons to catch up on local, national and global news headlines in print and in text. There website even offers a wide range of genealogy tools. Or, check out Freegal, a free music streaming service with access to over 15 million songs. Listeners can log in at freegal.com using their card number and PIN. Bring home your favorite movies and TV shows through Hoopla. This free service is available to card holders at participating libraries. Through the online portal, users can access thousands of movies and TV shows, music, e-books, audiobooks and comics. Up to 20 items can be rented out every month and the selection

is virtually endless. This free service is available at participating libraries in our local area. Users can sign up at hoopla.com or the Hoopla app for iPhone and Android.

Members of the Atlantic County Library System can get access to Axis360. This free service allows users to scroll through through thousands of e-book titles at no additional charge. Applicable card holders can also sign up for the childrens learning website, Tumblebook Library. The Tumblebook digital platform features many e-books, read-alongs, games and videos, helping children from preschool to 3rd grade to learn while discovering the joy of reading. For those who are interested in accessing these services, the Atlantic County Library System is currently offering temporary digital library cards to all residents with an Atlantic County address.

In addition to digital content, there is a wide selection of programs for both children and adults. Ocean City Librarians Miss Leslie, Miss Taimi and Miss Maureen host virtual children’s singalongs and storytime on YouTube and Facebook. You can also take part in online book clubs, virtual lectures with local leaders and language class-

es using Zoom video conferencing.

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

Group Mentality

I

t has been a while since I have given in to “Ranting,� one of the themes of my column but here I am. In one of my earlier columns, I wrote about my misgivings about some Facebook postings even though they were posted by prior “friends.� My reluctance to join Facebook was overshadowed by my desire to communicate with friends and relatives separated by distant locales and busy schedules. It was also an opportunity to share my photography and view work done by other artists. I found that joining certain groups like families of my father’s old WWII Fighter squadron for example, very rewarding. I soon added some community groups to stay informed with the issues relevant to my neighborhood.

As expected, some of these groups have become a vehicle for people airing what I deemed to be petty annoyances and elevating them to irrational levels. These rather mundane issues ranged from the concerns of unleashed dogs on the beach, the size of free trash and recycling cans for residents to the question of biking

riding hours on the boardwalk, just to name a few.

Predictably, the present pandemic has raised fear and concern among everyone and rightly so. The threat of illness and death is real but the vitriolic attacks on these local Facebook groups shines a spotlight on the shortsightedness, selfishness and ignorance of some people in the community; people who puff themselves up by banging on a keyboard but will not air their concerns at a commissioners’ meeting.

Recently, there have been postings comparing our local police department to the German Gestapo of World War II. This unjustified outrage is based on them enforcing regulations set forth by our governor. The fact is the Gestapo pulled people out of their homes, put them up against the wall and shot them in the street. As unpopular as some of these regulations may be, it is the duty of our police officers to uphold them. There have also been comparisons of these regulations to the German propaganda machine which resulted herding the Jews into boxcars bound for concentration camps. Yes, these are comments that were posted and I can’t help but think there are others who think similarly but refrain from posting

on a public forum. It is unconscionable to make such a comparison when all we are subjected to is isolating in our homes where we have heat, food, water, sanitation and even toilet paper.

Worst of all, comparing our police department to the Gestapo as well as comparing citizens who notify the police of a failure of social distancing does nothing less than minimize the horrific and evil actions against humanity to which they refer. Yet, these are the very people who will call 911 for something as serious as an intruder in their home or as minor as a noise complaint and expect a quick response.

Recently, our Governor lifted the restrictions on parks and since many people

still could not adhere to the guidelines for social distancing, some parks were closed after just one day. Sadly, this further illustrates the need for a segment of the population to have restrictions placed upon them. These are highly emotional times but these emotions should be calmed and our focus must be on mental strength.

The Best Bread Recipe

I

t is no surprise that the most popular recipe on my blog these days is for sourdough bread, called Sullivan Street Bakery Bread. I published the recipe in 2014 and it’s seen more traffic in recent weeks than in the past few years. If you are lucky enough to have flour and yeast, you need to make this sourdough bread. It is crusty on the outside, light on the inside and will make you feel like a rock star in the kitchen. With only four ingredients (one of which is water), it’s a very forgiving and easy recipe.

The dough needs to rest for at least twelve hours so I always start it the night before I want to serve it. After combining the dry ingredients (flour, salt and yeast), you add water and stir the dough for about a minute. You then cover it and let it rest for at least twelve hours. The next day you will form it into a ball and let it rise again for between one and two hours. Now comes the fun part, baking it! You will need a six to

eight quart pot with a lid to cook the bread. This can be ceramic, cast iron or glass. You then cook the bread for thirty minutes covered and an additional fifteen minutes uncovered. The hardest part will be letting the bread cool before slicing it. I baked a loaf a few days ago that I made panini sandwiches out of and it was absolutely delicious.

I’ve been hearing from a lot of people having trouble finding yeast in local supermarkets. Here is what I recommend. If you have to buy it online, most likely you will be buying more than you can envision using in the next one, two or three years.

Luckily you can freeze yeast so no worries about using up all that yeast in the short term.

Sharing is caring so if you know of local friends in need of yeast, divide it up and leave some on your porch for pickup. Also, I’ve heard from people buying yeast from local restaurants who are able

to buy it in bulk and sell lesser quantities to people in the community. This is a great option and you may also find some restaurants selling other products like produce and meats. Essl’s Dugout Restaurant in Pleasantville has been

selling very popular meal kit boxes that customers have been enjoying.

Besides yeast, flour is the most valuable item in my pantry right now. I’ve been making pizza at least twice a week for dinner. My son loves pancakes for breakfast so I make one to two batches a week. Last night I treated my family to a Mediterranean dinner with homemade pita, falafel, hummus and salad. A five-pound bag of flour typically costs around $4 and can go a long way in feeding your family.

While these are strange and uncertain times, hopefully there is good that will come out of all of this. For me, I am looking forward to continuing our efforts to waste less, using more of what we have and visiting the supermarket less.

Make sure to cook lots of good food during this time but more importantly, stay safe and healthy!

SULLIVAN STREET BAKERY BREAD First you mix together your dry ingredients of flour, yeast and salt. Then add water and stir together for thirty seconds to a minute. This will come together as a very sticky mixture. Add this to another bowl that is coated with olive oil. Cover with plastic wrap or Bee’s Wrap and let it rise. The original recipe says to let it rise for twelve hours. I let mine rise for fourteen hours and it was fine. This is what it looked like after the overnight rise.

After letting it rise you take it out of the bowl and fold it a couple of times.

I had to add flour at this point to get it to stick together. I added just enough to be able to touch it without having it stick to my fingers. You let it sit for another fifteen minutes and then put it on a dishtowel coated in flour and cover it for one to two hours, until it has doubled in size.

Put a pot in the oven and preheat the oven to a high temperature for at least thirty minutes. I used a cast iron dutch oven. Place the ball of dough in the preheated pot seam side up, cover and cook for thirty minutes.

Remove the lid and bake for an additional fifteen to thirty minutes, until the loaf is browned.

The first time I made this bread I had to keep reminding myself that it didn’t come from a bakery. It really tastes as good as something you would buy. This bread is perfectly crusty on the outside and soft on the inside.

Go ahead and give it a try. With only four ingredients, how hard can it be!

INGREDIENTS ● 3 cups flour (I used all-purpose) ● 1½ cups water ● ¼ teaspoon yeast (I used rapid rise yeast) ● 1¼ teaspoon salt ● olive oil for coating

extra flour, wheat bran or cornmeal for dusting ● Equipment ● two medium mixing bowls ● 6 to 8 quart pot with lid (glass, cast iron or ceramic) ● wooden spoon or spatula ● plastic wrap or Bee's Wrap ● 2 cotton dish towels INSTRUCTIONS Mix dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Add water and incorporate by hand or with a wooden spoon or spatula for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Lightly coat the inside of a second medium bowl with olive oil and place the dough in the bowl. Cover with plastic wrap or Bee's Wrap and let the dough rise for at least 12 hours at room temperature.

Remove the dough from the bowl and fold once or twice. You may need to add additional flour. Add just enough so the dough does not stick to your fingers. Let the dough rest 15 minutes in the bowl or on the work surface. Next, shape the dough into a ball. Generously coat a cotton towel with flour; place the dough seam side down on the towel and dust with flour. Cover the dough with a cotton towel and let rise 1-2 hours at room temperature, until more than doubled in size.

Preheat oven to 450-500. Place the pot in the oven at least 30 minutes prior to baking to preheat. Once the dough has more than doubled in volume, remove the pot from the oven and place the dough in the pot seam side up. Cover with the lid and bake 30 minutes. Then remove the lid and bake 15-30 minutes uncovered, until the loaf is nicely browned.

t's an age-old question, is the glass half empty or half full?

Your answer reflects your outlook on life and whether you're optimistic or pessimistic. Your answer may even affect your health.

Indeed, some studies show that personality traits such as optimism and pessimism can affect many areas of your health and well-being.

The positive thinking that usually comes with optimism is a key part of effective stress management. And effective stress management is associated with many health benefits.

If you tend to be pessimistic, don't despair — you can learn positive thinking skills. All this reflects how you handle reaching your weight loss goals.

Positive thinking doesn't mean that you keep your head in the sand and ignore life's less pleasant situations. Positive thinking just means that you approach unpleasantness in a more positive and productive way. You think the best is going to

happen, not the worst.

Positive thinking often starts with self-talk. Self-talk is the endless stream of unspoken thoughts that run through your head. These automatic thoughts can be positive or negative. Some of your self-talk comes from logic and reason. Other self-talk may arise from misconceptions that you create because of lack of information.

If the thoughts that run through your head are mostly negative, your outlook on life is more likely pessimistic. If your thoughts are mostly positive, you're likely an optimist — someone who practices positive thinking.

I believe that having a positive outlook enables you to cope better with stressful situations, which reduces the harmful health effects of stress on your body and helps you to stay on a healthy path to wellness. It's also thought that positive and optimistic people tend to live healthier lifestyles. They get more physical activity, follow a healthier diet, and don't smoke or drink alcohol in excess.

It’s true! You can learn to turn negative thinking into positive thinking. The process is simple, but it does take time and practice — you're creating a new habit, after all. If you want to become more optimistic and engage in more positive thinking, first identify areas of your life that you usually think negatively about, whether it's work, your daily commute or a relationship. You can start small by focusing on one area to approach in a more positive way.

Try this, Periodically during the day, stop and evaluate what you're thinking. If you find that your thoughts are mainly negative, try to find a way to put a positive spin on them. Please give yourself permission to smile or laugh, especially during difficult times. Seek humor in everyday happenings. When you can laugh at life, you feel less stressed.

This is a big one. Aim to exercise for about 30 minutes on most days of the week. You can also break it up into 10-minute chunks of time during the day. Exercise can positively affect mood and reduce stress. Follow a healthy diet to fuel your mind and body. And learn techniques to manage stress. ●

Always surround yourself with positive people . Make sure those in your life are supportive people you can depend on to give helpful advice and feedback. Negative people may increase your stress level and make you doubt your ability to manage stress in healthy ways.

Start self-talk by following one simple rule. Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else. Be gentle and encouraging with yourself. If a negative thought enters your mind, evaluate it rationally and respond with affirmations of what is good about you.

Think about things you're thankful for in your life. After all, life is good.

If you tend to have a negative outlook, don't expect to become an optimist overnight. But with practice, eventually your self-talk will contain less self-criticism and more self-acceptance. You may also become less critical of the world around you.

When your state of mind is generally optimistic, you're better able to handle everyday stress, lose weight, and even be a better parent in a more constructive way.

That ability may contribute to the widely observed health benefits of positive thinking.

Marine Mammal Stranding Center Still Serving Our Shores Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

A

s an animal lover, I love when I hear about individuals or organizations going above and beyond

to help lost, stranded or injured animals. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center (MMSC) in Brigantine is one of those organizations whose passion for rehabilitating and saving marine mammals has been the fuel that drove this incredible organization for over 40 years.

Since 1978, Robert Schoelkopf and his wife, Sheila Dean, have been saving marine mammals not only off the coast of New Jersey, but all along the eastern seaboard. Although best known for saving seals,

MMSC helps all marine mammals they encounter including dolphins, whales, sea turtles, and even the occasional lost Florida manatee. To date, they have responded to over 5,100 stranded marine mammals, and on average they see between 100-200 a year. Bob says their work "is critical in collecting and rescuing

to remember not to touch it or try to get it back into the ocean yourself. Seals, whales, dolphins and sea turtles are protected by state and federal law and sometimes seals are just taking a break from the water.

If you approach them you may scare them back in sooner than they are ready. The best thing you can do for these animals if you think they are injured is call MMSC and wait for trained professionals to arrive and assess the situation. MMSC recommends keeping at least 150 feet away from any mammal you believe to be stranded and call them immediately at 609-266-0538 to report the incident.

MMSC relies heavily on donations as they currently do not have any permanent funding. The work they do is vital to rescue and rehabilitate stranded marine mammals and sea turtles. If you have a love and desire to help animals in need, there are numerous ways you can get involved, from volunteering to attending one of their amazing fundraising events. Currently, many of their events have been postponed, however there are still some great events lined up for when we get back to normal. ‘Run-4-the-Animals 5k’ is their next scheduled event for October 3rd where you can run/ jog/walk alongside likeminded people and all for a great cause. There are prizes for the top runners in each age category, plus a post-race buffet included in the price ($30).

So, if you are wanting to help but cannot commit volunteering time, this is a great way to help MMSC out so they can continue doing their great work.

Another great way to not only support the important work MMSC does, but also do something fun for the kids, is the ‘Adopt a Seal’ program. For only $25, you can help provide food, medicine and care to an injured or sick seal. You will get a certificate and a photograph of your new family member, along with an individual history so you can see what adventures it has been on! For those who are looking to take a more hands-on approach, MMSC offers summer internships for college students where you can earn college credit. Mother’s Day: the Green Light for Gardening

other’s Day marks the unofficial “safe” time to plant warm season and tender vegetables, herbs, and flowers. For gardeners, digging in the dirt is a great way to celebrate the day. Usually by this date (the second Sunday in May) we are pretty safe from evening frosts. Of course, this is only a guideline for our green thumbs. Living near the coast, those of us in South Jersey have the advantage of slightly warmer evening temperatures that allow us to plant a little earlier. But there’s always the risk of a rogue frost to squelch our enthusiasm. For temperatures in the 30’s, simply covering your plants with a sheet or light blanket can protect your tender veggies.

Waiting until Mother’s Day significantly shortens the season, which is why many gardeners start seeds indoors before last frost. My own vegetable garden started back in mid-March. Cold season vegetables like peas, spinach, onions, carrots, kale, and broccoli are well on their way in my raised beds. Being impatient, I also took my chances with basil, tomatoes, and cucumbers in April.

Ghosts of Pandemics Past and Affinity for Despotism Opinion By Howard Barbanel

T

here’s an old joke about eating Chinese food that says after you’ve had a big meal, you’re hungry again a half hour later. That may be true for us but probably also for them too because the foods they have an insatiable appetite for can literally kill you. Iguanas, koala bears, pelicans, dogs, cats and especially bats. Eating bats is literally bat**** crazy and harvesting bat guano (excrement) to diddle around with the viruses in their feces is probably what has put us in the two-month Corona lockdown and economic meltdown we’ve been suffering from. Covid-19 is far from the first time we’ve taken a lethal hit from China.

The 20th Century saw three flu pandemics (aside from regular, seasonal flus) originating from China.

Some suspect that the 1917-1918 pandemic originated there as well.

However, origin of the 1957-58 pandemic was most definitely from East Asia. It killed as many as 116,000 in the US out of a population 174.9 million, or nearly half the size of the today’s US population of roughly 330 million, so the proportion of those who were made ill and who perished was higher compared to today’s Covid-19. The country did not shut down even though the mortality rate was 10-times that of the 2009 Swine Flu. I vividly recall the 1968-69 Hong Kong Flu. It hit the US in the Fall of 1968 and circulated for nearly two years. The CDC says it was an “avian influenza A virus, (H3N2)” and that killed about 100,000 in the US and a million worldwide. The US population was then 200.7 million. I was 10 in 1968 and my whole family was down with it – both my parents, myself and my younger brother. Things were so bad at home that my maternal grandmother came out to care for us.

Most of the fatalities, then as now with Covid-19 were comprised of people over 65. This flu is still around today

and has never been cured, just contained. The country didn’t close down even though millions were infected and made sick by it.

In 2009 we had the Swine Flu which was projected to be enormously fatal but ended up burning out earlier than expected. A vaccine was only available after the disease had peaked. From April 12, 2009 to April 10, 2010, CDC estimated there were 60.8 million cases, 274,304 hospitalizations and 12,469 deaths in the United States due to the (H1N1)pdm09 virus. The country did not shut down even though nearly 61 million Americans got sick from it.

Even though none of the aforementioned Asian flu pandemics of the 20th Century killed millions in the US by any stretch of the imagination, US health professionals opted to latch on to hysterical computer models generated in England that estimated 2.2 million people would die here without a national quarantine and lockdown.

It was somehow OK for 60 million to get sick from Swine Flu with no media

hysterics but not OK for millions to contract Covid-19. Why was that?

Given decades of history on pulmonary and respiratory pandemics and how they were handled here, what was the model our medical, media and political class decided to adopt? Why the Chinese model, of course. Never mind that Chinese infection numbers and information couldn’t be verified and were lied about. Never mind that China, as a totalitarian Communist dictatorship (Communism is self-defined as the “Dictatorship of the Proletariat.”) can forcibly hermetically seal a city of 11 million (Wuhan) with nary a peep of opposition or information leakage from the people; never mind that China has an extensive history of self-serving deceit and boldfaced deception both at home and abroad, never mind that the Chinese Communist Party would be delighted to see the entire economy of The West crippled or destroyed.

Why use tried and true Western models of disease management when we can ape the bat-loving Chinese?

Could it be about power? Power is intoxicating and there’s the old adage that “absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Who is power hungry? Let’s

start with many scientists who have gotten drunk on being celebrated and venerated on television and online 24/7. Revenge of the nerds here?

Then there are the politicians. No politician wants to be held responsible on election day for two million or even 100,000 deaths, so even though there wasn’t a shred of proof that locking down the country would kill the pandemic, they went that route anyway.

Then, once in place, it has morphed from “flattening the curve” of an anticipated spike in hospitalizations which might overwhelm the health system to becoming about stopping the virus altogether (for which there is no cure yet for this or the 1968 flu) and then penultimately, particularly among Democratic governors and mayors, implementation of their progressive agenda by executive fiat under the guise of emergency requirements.

With people locked in their homes, this effectively squelches opposition.

Finally, the Democratic obsession with defeating Trump and regaining control of The White House is so overwhelming that it’s worth any price – even by plunging the nation into a terrible depression, to create an environment where Trump can be turned out of office and stripped of his signature preCovid success of a roaring economy.

That pleases the Chinese too because Trump had been pressuring them on

trade issues.

Places with enough backbone to stick with Western norms have included Sweden, Hong Kong and South Korea.

Millions haven’t died as restaurants, parks, schools and offices have remained open. Twelve states in the US didn’t lock down and they’ve been doing just fine. Interestingly, New York State just announced that in a survey of about 1,200 newly admitted patients at over 100 New York hospitals conducted during the first few days of May that fully 66 percent of new Covid patients had been staying at home, not working (only 17 percent) and not using mass transit.

Meaning people have been indoors.

So how is staying at home indefinitely helpful? Meanwhile Chinese cities are all open for business and millions aren’t dying.

From Forbes magazine: “In addition to [New Yorkers] mostly coming from their homes, surveyed patients were more likely to be over 51 years old, and either nonessential workers, retired or unemployed. 96 percent of the surveyed patients had co-morbidities, which means nearly all had another chronic medical condition prior to catching coronavirus.” We also know

that about eight out of ten deaths associated with Covid-19 in the U.S. have occurred in adults ages 65 and older, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) so why are we locking down all the younger people and prohibiting folks to go to parks and beaches where the sunshine (Vitamin-D) and fresh air will do everyone some good if most hospitalizations come from older people who’ve been staying at home? Maybe it’s a form of China envy for the power grab reasons indicated above?

But taking a clear look at today’s China is helpful. Aside from being an incubator for pandemics, China is a country that just last year put one million of their own citizens in concentration camps just because they were Moslems. China is a country that has been brutally suppressing free-

dom advocates in Hong Kong. China is country that rattles its sabers, missiles, warships and jet fighters every week against democratic Taiwan, threatening to invade and conquer them militarily. China is the main backer of the nefarious regime in North Korea and helps support Venezuela and Cuba among other bad actors. China is a country that essentially relies on the slave labor of untold millions to produce goods at ridiculously low prices so that Western nations can’t compete and then turns Westerners into consumer vassals – making Western nations utterly dependent on them for essentials including medicines and medical supplies, vitamins, clothing, shoes, hardware, electronics, you name it.

To protect America against the evil depredations of despotic regimes such as China and to ensure peace, freedom and stability in the world we must wean ourselves off the teat of cheap (and often shoddily made) Chinese goods even if we have to pay more for them. Make things in America or in allied nations so that we retain our independence on all levels – and one sure way to put us on that path is to send our young people back to work and back to school now so that as a nation we are not bankrupted, enfeebled and ultimately dominated by malevolent dictators.

The story follows two women: Mia Warren, a wandering artist who moves to Shaker Heights (a planned, pristine, privileged town), and Elena Richardson, an organized, motherly journalist. The plot is addictive; it’s difficult to watch a single episode in one setting.

Walking for physical fitness is underrated Shore Fit

ave you ever been that person whose scoffed at someone pumping their arms while walking and thought, ”Why bother?” Walking actually is an extremely effective form of exercise. It also gives us that mental boost which I’ve mentioned in a previous article. Let’s face it, during this time and our current situation, it’s one of few exercises that is readily available to all of us. It also serves as an outlet because we are stuck indoors with all these limitations placed on our society for the past two months.

Walking can be as good as running for some, if not better. It may not be a better workout, but it may be a better exercise choice for some due to physical limitations.

There is no doubt or question that running is more physically demanding than walking which leads us to label it

as a "better workout." In fairness, the two really shouldn’t be compared against each other. Running has a proverbial “leg up “ on walking because it recruits larger muscles, faster motion and of course, greater force.

Walking is the suggested workout over running for many people. For example, those with knee, ankle and back problems and also for people who are overweight. Walking is a lower impact exercise and can be done for longer periods of time.

There are significant health benefits of walking too such as increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke and improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes. Our bones will also be stronger and our balance improved.

Walking at a moderate intensity can get the job done just as well as running, as long as you’re expending the same amount of energy. Great news for those of us that dread going on a jog. While the physical benefits are notable and take time to acquire, the mental boost that can be gained from adding a walk to your daily routine may be more immediate.

We could all benefit from that mental boost these days! I once read that a ten minute walk may be just as good as a forty five minute workout when it comes to relieving the symptoms of anxiety. The act of walking is a mood booster. The simple act of walking can create vigor, attentiveness and self confidence. That should be enough to get you out of your seat.

If your goal is weight loss, you simply can’t set the treadmill at 3.5 and zone out for an hour. The power of an effective walking workout lies in your hands, literally. All of those buttons on the treadmill are there for a reason, and it’s time you start hitting a few of them.

You can get just as good of a workout walking on a treadmill as you can running on one. It's all about how you adjust the settings. By adding some variables into the mix you can turn a simple walk into a fun, fast interval session, by raising and lowering the heart rate, as opposed to keeping the heart rate at one steady pace. Try mixing it up with hills and elevation and vary your walking speed. You can also add some weights, either hand held or ankle. Adjusting the incline on a treadmill has several benefits because you're placing more demand on the body to keep up with the machine. The higher

you set the incline, the more energy your body is forced to use. This increase of energy burns more calories. By adding weights via dumbbells, ankle weights and/ or a weighted vest, you will increase the intensity and calories burned without requiring a lot of extra effort, depending on the weight you use.

Another quick way to get the most out of your workout on the treadmill or outside is to challenge your body with interval training. You can build up cardio endurance by using short intervals to maximize your time. I would say, try walking for 3 minutes at a moderate pace and then fast walk for two and so on and so forth. You can play with those numbers and mix it up any way you like.

Next time you’re thinking, ”Do I really want to do another indoor exercise video on You Tube or Exercise TV?” Well if the answer is no, think about this and how you can change an ordinary walk into something fun and challenging.

hrough these troubling times of quarantine due to COVID-19, people are spending their free time in many different ways; planting gardens, taking on a new hobby of baking, needle point or even building a deck. Studies have shown that

three of the following four activities are art-related: TV, movies, reading and arts and crafts.

In both Atlantic and Cape May Counties, we’ve had the good fortune of local shops keeping their followers busy with activities, by holding weekly paint sessions, dance lessons, music, concerts, yoga and meditation through Facebook Live and Zoom, all of which are greatly missed.

The arts are essential to our community, and so are the artists that create them.

delphia and received his degree in illustration from the Parsons School of Design in New York City. In recent years, his work has been featured throughout the AtlantiCare complex as part of their Healing Arts initiative, along with a featured exhibition at the Claridge Hotel and permanent displays at the Noyes Arts Garage in Atlantic City and his studio in Somers Point.

Recently, Kuzma has finished working in conjunction with Enlightened Solutions. He painted a 360 degree mural for one of the rooms at their Recovery Center in Egg Harbor City, and the results have been phenomenal.

Last Autumn, Kuzma created a mural for the C-Sure Children’s Park on Somerset Avenue in Ventnor. The mural was provided by a non-profit organization for the park headed

by Marsha Galespie. It consist of six large panels, all of which were created in an oil painting process on wood (in itself, is amazing), Each of the panels showcase the city’s boardwalk, beaches, fishing pier, children, ocean and dolphins. One entire panel is used to exhibit our gorgeous sun.

There is a real sense of cheer, joy and uniqueness that only this local artist can provide.

Since the pandemic, Kuzma has continued to deliver art through his social media platforms. He offers live painting demonstrations and has recently started performing live concerts on Facebook.

International Studies have shown a 72% decline in art gallery income worldwide due to the COVID-19 crisis. While many artists are struggling to make an honest living, Steve Kuzma continues to inspire others through his work. As the health crisis continues worldwide, artists from all walks of life are joining together, collaborating to help get them through these difficult times. Now more than ever, we must remember the importance these creators have on our world and their vision to inspire others.

Beginnings, Now and Going Forward Shore Collectibles

’ll start this article at the “Now” part of my title by addressing the current state of affairs for our area and my business due to the Coronavirus.

For the past 6 weeks all but essential businesses have been shut down, with no idea when and how they will be allowed to reopen. The local economy has been devastated, especially with the closure of the casinos, which directly employ over 30,000 people plus the many who provide service and supplies. Unless businesses can reopen prior to the summer season with the areas’ dependency on tourism, things could go from bad to worse. An indication of the uncertainty of what the future holds financially, in the week prior to closing our business, we experienced the highest volume of sales of gold and silver ever, to the extent we sold out and were unable to obtain replacements because our suppliers were sold out. Although we have been closed for 6 weeks, we have been able to pay our employees the entire time with them using vacation time and sick time to help offset some of the cost.

Ebay is the only source of revenue at this time, and Linda and I go into the store to ship 6 days a week, even though we are not open.

The ”Beginnings” part of this article started 50 years ago – that’s right, I’ve been in business for 50 years, beginning with a small part time store in Brigantine in 1970, moving to the Shore Mall in 1974 where we operated in various locations for 39 years, and now finally at or current location on the Black Horse Pike. In addition, I also had second locations for a while in both the Deptford Mall and the Hamilton Mall. We grew from a small store dealing in coins, stamps an metal detectors to a huge 10,000 square foot store stocking a wide range of collectibles and sports memorabilia. Now we’ve gone full circle back to a small store. I had hoped my 50th anniversary (which actually is in June) would look different than it appears today, but I have to look to the future, not the past.

So, “Going Forward”, we will remain in business for the foreseeable future, but with some changes to insure the health of everyone, my employees and my customers. I have Federal designation as a “Financial Institution” because we sell and buy

gold and silver plus other precious metals.

This imposes obligations of operation and reporting, but under state requirements for opening, we are an essential business, meaning we can open at any time. I have not taken the decision to open lightly, as I have said the safety of my employees and customers comes first, so to meet that goal we will be a different business going forward.

The most difficult decision, but most critical is that we are closing our showroom to the public. Because of the small space, social distancing is impossible. However, we are installing a bank style cash drawer so people can sell or buy things from us while standing outside. Our employees will remain inside behind a window and all transactions will be viewable by both parties while providing a safe barrier.

We had thought about using our Absecon location for this type of activity because it was formerly a bank, but because it did not have a cash drawer, only pneumatic tubes, it would not work for heavy objects.

We will reopen once the modifications I described are completed, but only our Egg Harbor Township location will be open. We will work to increase our on-line presence to continue to serve our customers’ needs.

We will continue to sell supplies and collectibles though the new cash drawer, but customers will need to know what they want beforehand.

Fifty years ago I never thought I would still be in business, in fact I was more worried about lasting another year, and I certainly didn’t think I would be conducting business the way I just described, but in life as business, you either evolve or you don’t go forward.

irst and foremost, let me express my sincere condolences to every person who contracted the coronavirus and especially for those who have died from it. The effect that this devastating disease has had on everybody has been horrendous. We can and will defeat CORONAVIRUS…We are Jersey Strong…

People have been in quarantine for almost two months. Now the mental and economic effects are taking a major toll on citizens young, old and in between. Millions of people have lost their jobs. Businesses have closed and may not ever open again. The Stock Market has dropped approximately 25%.

Some businesses have been permitted to remain open during the quarantine such as Acme, Shop Rite, Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Sam’s etc. while thousands of businesses including the service industry have been mandated to be closed. Is it fair for a Government to choose which businesses survive and which one die? I say NOT. The time has come to OPEN NEW JERSEY for businesses by May 15, 2020 or we will more than likely experience irreparable damage to jobs and businesses especially in

the Jersey Shore region. They may never be resurrected. The Governor needs to offer the same level playing field to our entire society that is being permitted to the businesses and others which are mentioned above. The time is NOW to plan to roll out for a May 15, 2020 opening. The Jersey Shore economy and New Jersey businesses in general may very well die if we cannot open.

I am respectively asking businesspeople and citizens alike to reach out to Senators, Assembly people, Freeholders, County Executives, Mayors NOW to establish a plan of action. We need to contact the Governor with a well thought out plan to Get New Jersey Open for Business. If the big box stores mentioned above can operate in a safe manner, then the rest of the New Jersey businesses can do it too.

Atlantic City’s Civic Warriors In The Age Of Covid-19 Saturday, May 2nd, Atlantic City Volunteers Stepped Up To Make Sure People Have Food and also helped many complete their 2020 Census Forms.

Say what you want about Atlantic City, but you can never say “Atlantic City does not take care of their own.” Like every city in New Jersey, Atlantic City has shut down many business doors and forced an unprecedented number of citizens out of work.

Likewise, the schools have been closed for classroom learning for more than 6 weeks.

So how has Atlantic City responded?

The city’s number one citizen, Mayor Marty Small has worked every day to ensure the overall health and welfare of the residents of Atlantic City. Some would say Small should be focused on The May 12th election.

Mayor Small, however, works from sun up to sun down handling the city business, but also takes time out to make sure the city workers that can’t stay at home, have the best protective gear to combat infection and spread of Covid-19. In Between all of his duties, Small takes time nearly every day to be a part of the daily food distribution for youth and seniors.

No Child Left Hungry When I attended AC public schools my parents could afford to prepare my lunch daily. I chose to brave the food in the cafeteria. I actually enjoyed the cafeteria menu at my junior high and highschool. Yes, I could have had mom’s home made fried chicken every day. However, throughout my time in high school both my parents worked. Due to the shut down of the entire state, parents are not able to work and frankly many students from AC schools depended upon the school cafeteria to provide breakfast and many more look to their school to provide lunch. I am proud to say. That students can (while practicing social distancing)

get breakfast and lunch daily at every AC public school.

The Count Continues After several attempts at getting the community to get in on Zoom calls and other virtual 2020 Census events, some volunteers have been helping residents complete their census forms at food distributions.

Saturday, May 2nd, Our Lady Star of The Sea gave out much needed food to feed about 500 hungry families. (Outside where people could stand 6 feet apart.) Unfortunately the Census will not stop for the Corona Virus.

The volunteers realized an opportunity to help local residents take care of their hunger and their duty to complete the census. Virus or not, every one from the Black community that is not counted will be a loss of financial and political power in Atlantic City and South Jersey. Many black and brown people don’t know what a Zoom chat or group chat is. They do not feel comfortable giving out information over the phone. Many people of color over the age of 55 feel even less comfortable logging on to a website by themselves to give our personal information. Though I want to reaffirm that completing your census at www.2020Census.gov is very safe. I want to also reaffirm that none of your information will be shared with other agencies such as The IRS. I applaud the people of Atlantic City, volunteers were here giving out food and other essentials to residents in need. People were social distancing and wearing masks. Volunteers brought the census forms and helped people fill them out and get them sent it. No volunteers, nor the people they served, were at any undo additional risk. Atlantic City like every other city in America tonight is uncertain about what will happen tomorrow. What the great people of Atlantic City know for sure is that without the help of everyone pulling together many more will go hungry today and many more more people will go uncounted in the 2020 Census.
