Even though the combination of health concerns, closures, social distancing, empty supermarket shelves, and the fear of the unknown at this scale is something our families have not experienced in living memory, have faith. Americans have always been able to join together and overcome adversity. First, we’re doing the right things. For example, as someone who fought hard to keep our casinos open I know nearly

KNOW HOW IT SPREADS There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person. ▶▶ Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet). ▶▶ Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. WASH YOUR HANDS Clean your hands often Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. AVOID CLOSE CONTACT Avoid close contact with people who are sick Put distance between yourself and other people if COVID-19 is spreading in your community. This is especially important for people who are at higher risk of getting very sick. Take steps to protect others STAY HOME IF YOU’RE SICK Stay home if you are sick, except to get medical care. Learn what to do if you are sick. COVER COUGHS AND SNEEZES Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow. Throw used tissues in the trash. Immediately wash your hands with

Coronavirus

Adjusting to life during a pandemic of the vendors and suppliers lost their source of income as well. With restaurants open only for take-out, an entire service industry was instantly out of work. The economic impact of this is certain to hit us all, like a tsunami! Regardless, protecting the health of the people in our community trumps all economic factors. We are all sacrificing in order to protect one another. In these unprecedented times, we are called to be creative and accomplish things in different ways, from our own homes. Our situation commands us to be strong, creative and compassionate. It's critical that we look out for one another, especially our seniors and other vulnerable folks. It's heartwarming to see on Facebook, how many people have stepped up to offer to pick up prescriptions or groceries for those in need. Social media allows us to stay connected in this time of disconnect and the internet offers many an opportunity to continue to work and learn remotely. May God bless us and protect us during this time of uncertainty. Please take precautions and stay safe. We will get through this together and all will be well again sometime in the near future. s I write this I am still grappling to adjust to the "new normal." In just a few days our entire world has changed. Confined to our homes, we count our toilet paper rolls and wave at friends from afar. (then sanitize our hands... just in case!) Prior to last week, I thought the coronavirus was something that was hyped by the media and would never directly affect us. By the weekend, I knew I was very wrong. The cancellations came, like dominos one after another. The NBA, NCCA, Broadway, celebrations and parades, schools, work, casinos, restaurants, bars, movies….everything that makes up the fabric of our day to day lives shut down. When the casinos went dark, nearly 30,000 employees were sent home. Plus all

ACUA Earth Day Festival 2020 originally scheduled for Sunday, April 26th, is cancelled. The Brigantine St. Patrick’s Day Parade, originally scheduled for Saturday, March 21st has been canceled. The Rat Pack: Back in Town at Tropicana is postponed until April 19th. The Atlantic County Library System will be cancelling all programs and meetings effective until further notice. The Atlantic City Free Public Library is closed until April 20th. All programs and classes scheduled through mid-April have been cancelled. Ocean City: All special events through the end of April will be cancelled. This includes the OC Con Comic and Memorabilia Show, Girls Weekend, the Great Egg Hunts on the beach and other Easter events, the Easter Sunrise Service, the Doo Dah Parade, the Mr. Mature America Pageant and Sports Memorabilia Show, among others. Somers Point Bayfest, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 25th, has been cancelled. Senior Dance Society at Somers Point Fire Co. is cancelled until further notice.

The Atlantic County Sheriff’s Office has launched an emergency services delivery program to help provide medicine, medical and food supplies for disabled veterans and seniors in the community who are home bound due to COVID-19. The Sheriff’s Office will be available Monday-Friday from 9am-3pm. To take part in the program, please call the Sheriff’s Office Telecommunication Office at 609-909-7200. OCNJ Care has re-launched to help those affected by COVID-19. The group is prepared to help by assisting at-risk populations in shopping, picking up medications of having somebody travel to locations that they have been advised to avoid, in cooking and delivering meals to anybody in need, including schoolchildren and older adults, and providing relief for families that cannot meet basic

John John and his sister Grace have both been students at ProDance Academy in Northfield, but Grace has gone on to use her dance skills for competitive cheer. Their cousin Ava, also a ProDance student, has branched out to modeling. The show was dedicated to their beloved matriarch, Grandma Wislocki (Gram), who, sadly, passed away last summer at the age of 96. She was their biggest cheerleader and supporter, and a unifying force in their close-knit family. The name and face of the show is famed choreographer Phil Wright, who lends his talent behind the scenes to help each family prepare for the show. The show was created after the success of Wright’s popular class Parent Jam. Over the years, Grace, John John, and Ava have all taken Wright’s classes. In addition to Wright, Fam Jam is also co-hosted by Ariel

oney, similar to how we know it today has been around for about 3,000 years. Before that a system of bartering was used as an exchange for goods and services. Animals skins, weapons and such were traded all over the world. The evolution of “money” has progressed over the centuries from crude coins and paper to rather advanced coins and sophisticated bills. Transactions using credit/debit cards are the norm now and we have even ventured into the realm of digital currencies such as Bitcoin. Where will currency go from here? Apparently, with the recent Coronavirus pandemic, we are on the precipice of substituting another valuable asset with which we would conduct business, toilette paper. By now, it is no surprise to all what is happening with the run on toilette paper in the stores, but it really sheds

a light on where priorities lie. I would think that in such a situation, food would be flying off the shelves after all, we must eat. But no, in the stores we frequent, shelves had ample amounts of a wide variety of food but no toilet paper. What I found even more curious is that shelves were still full of paper towels, napkins and tissues. In the interest of full disclosure, if I had nothing to use but those items, what’s the hardship? Of course, they shouldn’t be flushed but what’s a little inconvenience during a pandemic? My English mother told me tales of how she lived through the London Blitz during the second World War as a teenager. There was a shortage of eggs, fresh produce and milk among other items, but never did she mention a shortage of toilet paper. My father was stationed at an airbase in England and assuming he may have been more forthcoming, also never mentioned such a shortage. In this age of plenty and with the best distribution system in the history of this country, what is

happening? In my opinion, instead of a run on the banks in the Great

Depression, we have a run on toilet paper based on fear. People are filling up their baskets with cases of toilet paper; more than they would need for a month or more. I belong to a Facebook group called SHTF which is a timely acronym for when something Hits the Fan. Although I am not a “prepper” I do have an insatiable thirst for knowledge when it comes to the safety of me and my family. Of all the recommendations made in this group, I can’t recall any that included stockpiling toilet paper; food, medical supplies, first aid kit, water, weapons,

ammo and among other things, liquor but copious amounts of toilet paper, not so much. Hurricane Sandy blasted through our area in 2012. We were flooded and travel was extremely limited. The Red Cross came down our streets handing out free hot meals. They weren’t handing out toilet paper. At some point soon, this crisis will end and life will get back to whatever we think normal is. I hope people will have learned from this and keep a reasonable level of emergency supplies on hand for a variety of scenarios. Of course, abstaining from looking at our retirement accounts at this time would make our toilet paper last a lot longer. Charles Eberson has been in the newspaper business for over 25 years. estled in the southernmost por tion of Atlantic County is the city of Somers Point, a city that is filled with rich history and culture with landmarks such as Somers Mansion, Charlie’s Bar, JFK Park and the old Tony Marts. The city borders Egg Harbor Township to the west, Linwood north, and Ocean City and Upper Township. The city has a total land area of over 5,100 square miles with just over 4,000 square miles of land and 1,129 square miles of water. Somers Point is the oldest European settlement in Atlantic County. In 1693, Thomas Budd sold a 1,500 acre tract land to John Somers. He and his family emigrated from England and named the ‘Somers Plantation.’ Somers Point was officially incorporated, as a borough, in April 1886, and later reincorporated as a city on April 9, 1902. Between 1720 and 1726, Somers Mansion was built by John Somers’

oldest son, Richard Somers. It is the oldest existing house in Atlantic County and contains objects of historical interest, such as local quilts and textiles. The entire Mansion is also furnished, with some pieces dating back to the Eighteenth Century. The mansion stayed in the Somers family until 1937. To this day, Somers Mansion remains open for guests and visitors. Somers Point was also the birthplace of John’s great grandson, Richard Somers, Born on September 15,

1778, Richard Somers was an officer for the U.S. Navy, who first served in the West Indies during the Quasi-War with France. It is reported that in 1800, Somers fought in a series of duels after being accused of getting cold feet over battling future naval commodore Stephen Decatur. In May of 1803, he commanded the USS Nautilus out of Baltimore and led successful missions in Spain and Gibraltar. On September 4, 1804, Somers was assumed commander of the USS Intrepid, which was fitted out as a “floating volcano,” set to be blown up in Tripoli Harbor during the First Barbary War. Over 150 shells and 100 barrels of powder were loaded onto the vessel, with three rescue ships serving as escorts for those aboard. The Intrepid was spotted by enemy fleet shortly before the mission could be led out. All men on board, including Somers, died in the incident. A monument commemo-

In 1905, promoters formulated plans for the first trolley line between the city of Somers Point and the Atlantic City Boardwalk. The line would extend 16 miles in length and pass through Linwood, Northfield and Pleasantville. The Shore Fast Line was officially complete in 1906 and brought thousands of people to the city annually. To this day, the city has became a popular year-round destination for seasonal visitors and locals alike. It is easy to see why Somers Point is truly a beacon in history and culture. hile we witness grocery store shelves being cleared and products rationed, it feels like we have been caught in some kind of strange time warp. One wonders what the future will hold. During World War I and World War II, food rationing became a necessity. Many of the agricultural workers required to keep up with food demand were overseas fighting for freedom. Those who were still working on the farms were busy providing food for the troops. Transportation resources normally used for food distribution were being diverted to the war effort. Americans were encouraged to plant “Victory Gardens” to provide food for their own families’ needs and ease the growing burden of food demand. The idea of growing a Victory Garden was promoted

to Americans as a way they could help in the war effort from home and show their patriotism, while providing for their family. Suburbanites turned into gardeners by planting vegetables, herbs, and fruits in their backyards, front yard flower beds, and even window boxes. Public spaces, vacant lots, and rooftops were used, as the government urged Americans to plant “anywhere and everywhere that good soil can be found.” Children were taught in school about gardening and planted gardens on the school grounds. Colorful posters promoting the benefits of Victory Gardens and appealing to Americans’ patriotism were displayed and circulated. In 1943, Eleanor Roosevelt led by example and planted a Victory Garden on the White House Lawn. The Department of Agriculture and Office of Civilian Defense produced informational films calling for citizens to do their part. Pamphlets were distributed which laid out specific plans for productive gardens. Americans were urged to read gardening magazines and visit garden centers to educate themselves about gardening techniques. Succession planting was encouraged to produce the

nown for its annual popular Bayfest in the spring season, bayfront dining and beach concerts in the summer, the city of Somers Point is surrounded by Ocean City, Egg Harbor township and Linwood. Somers Point has been an increasing choice of second home buyers, especially those who want to enjoy the boardwalk and beach of nearby Ocean City. Just before the "corona virus pandemic" started very recently, the market was really starting to heat up, with multiple offers going on and homes moving quicker compared to last spring which was the best in over 10 years for sellers. The median sales price of homes has gone up 11.5% from 2018 to 2019 year for single family homes, and days on the market have gone down 29.6% for much faster sales. The condo townhouse segment saw a nice 37.1 % jump in much shorter marketing time and less days on the market. The most

expensive single-family home to sell last year sold for $1.1 million. The 3400 square foot luxury home was appointed with 5 Bedrooms and 3.5 baths on the water in the Anchorage Point area, along with a 50-foot boat slip. The city of Somers Point has been aggressive with making improvements to roadways in the last few years. It enhanced the lifestyle of health minded people who love the outdoors. For this reason, homes are always in demand near the bike path and bay area. Locals love cycling or walking, crabbing, fishing over the scenic 9th street bridge to Ocean City, NJ. Shore Medical Center has been the main employer and has expanded with major improvements over the years near the bay area. most crops from each space. Easy to grow vegetables such as peas, lettuce, swiss chard, carrots, spinach, potatoes, corn, and tomatoes were popular in Victory Gardens. Americans answered the call. By 1944, approximately 20 million Victory Gardens supplied nearly 40 percent of produce in the United States. The Department of Agriculture supported Americans and updated material to include instructions on how to can and preserve the surplus of food. During this difficult time of war and shortage, the American family was still able to enjoy fresh vegetables from their own backyards. Through the years, Victory Gardens have reappeared on and off again. As people choose to eat healthier and prefer to control the process of cultivation of their own food, modern Victory Gardens have, once again, grown in popularity. Today, as we face certain times, planting your own food just makes sense. Taking control of your own food source ensures you will have food available when you need it. For the small price of packets of seeds, you can yield a frugal, healthy crop for your family. Now that spring has arrived (hurray!), seedlings are available at garden nurseries to give you a head start. As schools have closed for indefinite periods, many of us have found ourselves becoming new to homeschooling. Teaching children the beauty of nature through gardening will instill them with a lifelong appreciation of the world around them. We can use this time while they are home to show them the wonder of a germinating seed that eventually becomes a large plant covered in healthy fresh food. As an added benefit, we can provide children with a much-needed diversion from the unsettling events around them and give them a fun activity to cure their boredom. Imagine the results of bringing back Victory Gardens with the same enthusiasm that Americans had in the past when faced

with hardships. They dug in and met the call and knew that their hard work would produce an abundance for themselves as well others. For the novice gardener, a wealth of information is available on gardening websites. Even from the confines of self-quarantine, we have a wealth of information at our sanitized fingertips. We can research companion planting and the most efficient way to produce a food source for our families. At the very least, you may pass on a love of gardening to your children. The more invested they are in the process, the more willing they will be to try new healthy foods. It’s very fulfilling to pick fresh herbs and vegetables from your own backyard for a meal. Neighbors can coordinate with each other and share and trade the fruits of their labor. Starting small is a good way to introduce yourself to gardening without getting overwhelmed. Diabetes and Diet By Nancy Adler

iabetes seems to be something I treat regularly in my practice. Could it be that our diet is the reason type 2 diabetes is so prevalent these days? Let’s explore the best foods we can incorporate each day to help keep blood sugar in check. Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism or the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. It involves problems with the hormone insulin, which is why it is critical for people with diabetes to manage their condition by staying healthy, which includes a proper diet. However, people with diabetes must be cautious about what they eat and drink. Foods suitable for the diabetic diet should be incorporated into meals every day. One of the healthiest foods for controlling diabetes is fatty fish. Salmon, for example, is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have significant benefits for heart health. Getting enough of these fats on a consistent basis is especially important for people with diabetes, who have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Broccoli is one of the most nutritious vegetables, with essentials like vitamin C and magnesium. The veggie has been found to help lower insulin levels and protect cells during metabolism. Broccoli is not only an excellent source of fiber, but it is also filling, which makes it a healthy choice for people trying to control their condition. Even people without diabetes would do well to incorporate more broccoli into their diet. Another food group suitable for the diabetic diet is leafy green vegetables. Mother always said “Eat your veggies “ and she was right ! Leafy greens have little to no digestible carbohydrates,

components that can raise blood sugar levels. Spinach and kale are good sources of several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C. Increasing vitamin C reduces inflammatory markers and fasting blood sugar levels. Cinnamon is a tasty spice rich in antioxidants. It can improve insulin sensitivity and lowers blood sugar by imitating the effects of insulin and increasing glucose transport into cells. Cinnamon also will help regulate cholesterol and triglyceride levels. It is one of the many spices healthy for people with diabetes. Eggs seem to have gotten bad wrap. I encourage and egg each day for helping to regulate blood sugar levels. A hard-boiled egg is an excellent high-protein snack if you have diabetes. The protein helps keep you full without affecting your blood sugar. The protein in eggs slows not only digestion, but also glucose absorption. If you have diabetes, you know this process is beneficial to your health. Incorporate an egg as a mid-afternoon snack to keep you feeling full. Along with cinnamon, turmeric is a beneficial spice with powerful health benefits. Curcumin is the active ingredient that helps lower inflammation and blood sugar levels. It also benefits kidney health. Maintaining kidney health is vital, as diabetes is one of the leading causes of kidney disease. Consider adding this spice to your meals to improve overall health. Greek yogurt is great for people with diabetes. Increased protein and fewer carbs and sugars make it a better choice than traditional yogurt. The protein can help you feel like you’ve had a more substantial snack, leaving you full and satisfied. Starting your day with Greek yogurt may help manage your blood sugar and prevent blood sugar spikes. Try to stay within a guideline of protein containing over 6 grams protein. Along with Greek yogurt, nuts are a satisfying diabetes-friendly snack. Nuts help regulate blood sugar. Eating almonds slows down the blood

sugar response; this is true for any foods high in carbohydrates. Walnuts are also a beneficial snack due to the fiber, protein, and healthy fats that help manage hunger and blood sugars. However, nuts should always be eaten in moderation. A great tip, when adding a few nuts to any food will drop the glycemic index in that meal. Flax seeds are an incredibly healthy food. Incorporating flaxseed into your daily diet can help lower your blood sugar level, which in turn helps prevent blood sugar spikes throughout the day. Flax seeds are also high in viscous fiber helpful for gut health, reducing insulin sensitivity, and creating feelings of fullness. Raspberries offer the most fiber of any berry. Fiber is the indigestible carbohydrate that helps pull cholesterol away from the heart, leaves you to feel full, and slows down how quickly blood sugars rise. Raspberries also taste great stirred into Greek yogurt or eaten on their own as an afternoon snack. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. The chronic condition causes abnormally high blood sugar because the body no longer responds as it should to insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates the movement of glucose. Type 2 diabetes causes the body to either resist the effects of insulin or fail to produce enough. This type is much different than type 1, though a lot of the symptoms, treatments, and complications overlap.

Rhodium, One Really Expensive Metal Shore Collectibles; The Gold and Silver Mine By Douglas Keefe

ast week I purchased the most expensive 1 ounce precious metal bar I have ever bought in the entire time I have been in business (in case you are interested, that is 50 years). The bar was 1 ounce of rhodium and I paid over $8000 for it, which is more than the cost of 1 each 1 ounce bars of platinum, gold and palladium together. Rhodium is one of earths rarest elements, with total annual production usually around 30 metric tons versus 3,300 metric tons of gold produced last year. Due to this low amount its’ price can vary widely since there is no stable supply or source to rely on and it is not traded on the major commodity exchanges due to the lack of supply. Extraction of rhodium is complex as it is usually mixed with gold,

platinum and palladium and is primarily found in South Africa, the Ural Mountains and North America. Rhodium’s primary use in in conjunction with other metals in catalytic conver ters in automobiles and because of its’ price it is used as a plating due to its’ resistance to corrosion. I had never even seen a rhodium bar before, but this one was packaged just like a platinum or palladium bar sealed with an assay card, but to be sure we tested it using our x-ray machine which gave the reading of .999 pure. Can’t be too sure, especially at that price. Because of the small supply of rhodium, its’ price can fluctuate drastically. The year 2000 saw rhodium price around $2000, which by 2003 dropped to $500, then by 2008 when all other metals were rising in value, rhodium hit $10,000, only to rapidly drop to $1000 by

2009. Rhodium’s prices fluctuated from $1000 to $3000 until last year and then this year broke over $11000. As a result of the wild swings in price, rhodium is highly discounted when one wishes to sell because there is no guarantee there will be a next buyer and at what price. I experienced a similar situation with discounting during the 1980 silver rush when the Hunt brothers were trying to corner the silver market. While the Hunt brothers were buying silver, the price of silver continued to rise, reaching $50 per ounce. Everyone was selling their silver, coins, jewelry and silverware, but the refineries were getting backed up with product and couldn’t melt and refine the silver on hand for weeks. As a result the prices paid were more in the order of $35 an ounce instead of $50 an ounce because no one could be sure the price would hold,

and it didn’t. Once the government stepped in and stopped the Hunt brothers from buying silver, the prices collapsed, and even the difference between the quoted and paid prices were not enough to prevent some people from losing a lot of money.

hat brought you to Atlantic City and into the gaming industry? What were your aspirations? **** NOTE – THIS INTERVIEW WAS CONDUCTED BEFORE THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK SO NO DISCUSSION ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF THE VIRUS ON CASINOS OR SURROUNDING AREAS WERE A PART OF THIS INTERVIEW. I started working in the market right out of college. I went to school at Monmouth University, where I studied journalism and communication. I knew that either I wanted to pursue a career as a journalist or be on the other side of storytelling, crafting ideas and trends, as a publicist. I found a passion for the PR side of the business through my internships which included writing for an entertainment magazine in the area and the Nets basketball team. When I graduated, there was a ton of buzz about Atlantic

City with the opening of Borgata and I was drawn to the excitement. I sought a job in PR. At that time there wasn’t a position open, but I was given the opportunity to get my foot in the door in an entry-level marketing position at the loyalty card center, which in the gaming industry is often where many who pursue careers in marketing get their start. Within a few short months, the job I wanted opened up and I started as a public relations specialist – working my way up and growing my career over the years in that field. While there, I oversaw the launches of many developments including the expansion and the opening of The Water Club. Today, my role has expanded to overseeing more departments and more resorts for Caesars Entertainment, the world’s largest gaming company. I’m responsible for public relations, advertising, social and digital media for Harrah’s, Caesars and Bally’s in Atlantic City. What are your feelings regarding employment in the gaming industry considering the long hours and tremendous responsibility that goes along with your position and how do you deal with the pressure? I think if you find what you are passionate about, it makes the blood, sweat, and

tears worthwhile. Working in the entertainment or gaming industries is a 24/7 lifestyle – and like any career there are pros and cons. But the rewards make the sacrifices worthwhile. There is nothing more rewarding then to see a story or an event or idea come to life and have that translate into successful results. Do you find the various Casino properties operations, in your field of PR have a different approach to marketing or is the general approach of attracting gaming customers similar? his might be my new favorite recipe and here’s why. It’s quick, easy, vegetarian and inexpensive. Oh and the best part, kid-approved! I came up with this recipe after getting some chard in my Door to Door Organics delivery. I made it twice in two weeks and it was met with rave reviews both times. Seriously, it’s so easy. You have to try it. You start by cooking lentils. I used brown lentils for this recipe. You cook one cup of lentils with two cups of water for about thirty minutes. While the lentils are cooking you sauté some red onion in olive oil for a few minutes until it starts to soften. Next slice up your chard. If you haven’t cooked with chard, it’s similar to spinach and high in minerals, fiber and protein. Add that to your pan and cook it for a few minutes so it begins to wilt. Next add a can of fire-roasted diced tomatoes, the cooked lentils and two tablespoons of taco seasoning. You can make your own taco seasoning, use the kind that comes with the taco shells or I like Penzey’s taco seasoning.

Let that simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to blend and serve it in taco shells along with your toppings of choice. Cheese and guacamole are my favorites. I am slowly moving towards only making one meal for us and the kids. My kids loved this meal and to me, that’s a winner! INGREDIENTS 2 cups water, 1 cup brown lentils, 1 tablespoon oil, ½ cup chopped red onion, 1 bunch of chard, tough stems removed and sliced thin, 2 tablespoons taco seasoning, 1 14-ounce can fire roasted tomatoes, taco shells, optional: guacamole, cheddar cheese, taco sauce INSTRUCTIONS In a medium saucepan bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add lentils, reduce to a simmer and cover partially. Cook until all liquid absorbed, about 30 minutes. In a non-stick skillet heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add chard and cook until starting to wilt, about 3 minutes. Add taco seasoning, tomatoes and lentils. Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 5 minutes until taco seasoning absorbed and chard wilted. Serve in hard or soft taco shells with cheese, guacamole or taco sauce.

Making the best with what you have

e are living in strange times right now. One thing is for sure. Everyone should stay home and only venture out if necessary. If you are like me and are the primary cook in your house, this may be especially stressful. I took very careful inventory of what I had in my refrigerator, freezer and pantry and over the course of a week, stocked my house with enough food to last for several weeks. As someone who normally goes to the grocery store several days a week, this really forced me to shift my meal planning. Besides the obvious staples, here are some items I stocked up on to help get us through the coming weeks. We go through a lot of bread in my house, between avocado toast for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch. Though I stocked up on a bunch of store-bought loaves that headed to the freezer, I also made sure that I have plenty of flour and yeast. If making your own bread seems daunting, now is the time to learn a new skill, bread making! I plan on perfecting whole wheat sandwich bread in the upcoming weeks. Another food that goes a long way is dried beans. A bag of dried beans costs about $1 while a can of cooked beans costs about the same and will yield far less. So what exactly can you do with beans? The possibilities are endless. Besides making soups and chili, I use beans in quesadillas, tacos (like cauliflower black bean tacos), hummus and salads. My most used beans are black beans, garbanzo beans and pinto beans. If you are committed to cooking dried beans, I recommend Rancho Gordo as a great online source you can order from. I make a lot of soup all year round but have been especially busy lately freezing a variety of soups. While normally I use store-bought broth, I’ve come to the realization that I could easily run out of broth so I’ve been making my own with vegetable scraps as well as stocking up on Better Than Bouillon that comes in a jar and can be added to boiling water to create broth. I am lucky to have a family of soup lovers.

Our favorites are tomato basil, butternut squash, lentil and split pea. If you haven’t been thinking of your freezer as a resource in these changing times, now is the time to do so. I have a large supply of butter in my freezer because we plan to do a lot of baking (cookies make the world better). Did you know that cheese can be frozen? I bought extremely large bags of shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheeses and transferred them into smaller bags for freezing. Pizza is always on my menu (with homemade dough) so sauce is a necessity. If you make your own sauce, make double and freeze what you want to save for later. Other foods that freeze well are tortillas, cut up fruit (for smoothies), vegetables (broccoli and spinach are my top two frozen vegetables), fresh herbs and cooked rice. hat a strange, bizarre & scary few weeks since I last wrote! First of all, I apologize…since my “glee” over “March Madness” being officially here turned out to be false. The poor folks who run the MAAC Basketball Tournament certainly

didn’t envision year #1 turning out like this! The coronavirus or COVID-19, has had an unprecedented impact on the world of sports as well as entertainment. Since I last wrote, the NBA suspended their season. That led to the NCAA to cancel “March Madness”. The MAAC Basketball Tournament had to leave town earlier than expected. The NHL followed next with a suspension of their season. MLB suspended Spring Training games and then told the players to fly back to their homes, meaning that the regular

season is delayed until probably Mid-May. Even the Philadelphia Union and MLS have suspended their season. In the NFL, Las Vegas will still host the draft, but there won’t be fans in the streets or in the theater. On the local level, the state basketball tournament was halted and won’t be completed for the first time in forever. From the entertainment world, a big name celebrity and his wife were among the first to acknowledge that they tested positive for COVID-19. Major films and shows that were in production stopped or have been delayed. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ●● The first domino to fall in this pandemic as far as sports goes was in Utah on Wednesday March 11th where during a game, the team learned that Rudy Gobert had tested positive for the Coronavirus. The Jazz were on the court against Oklahoma City and that game was called off immediately. So was Sacramento and New Orleans, and by the time the Sixers had walked off the Wells Fargo Center court with a win over the Knicks, the NBA was suspending the season. By the next afternoon, the NHL went on suspension, baseball soon followed, and the NCAA was hoping to hold the men’s & women’s tournament, but ultimately scrapped the whole thing. ●● Two days prior, Gobert spoke about the Coronavirus and in an act of playfulness, touched each & every phone or recording device as he left a press conference. Whoops. Gobert has

He took things a step further by pledging $500,000 to coronavirus-related relief efforts: $200,000 to part-time Jazz arena employees impacted by the loss of games, with $100,000 to assist families affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in both Utah and Oklahoma City (where he was tested) and €100,000 to France, his native country. A good move by him. I feel so bad for the folks who run the MAAC Basketball Tournament. They were full of excitement for their first year in Atlantic City, and then this happens. The thing that sets the MAAC apart from say the Atlantic 10, who was here previously, is their efforts on community outreach and to put down roots here. They went into the local schools, set up a “MAAC & cheese night” where local restaurants would compete on who has the best mac & cheese dish. Things like that told me that the MAAC was committed to really making a go of it here in Atlantic City. Now, this was just the first year of a three-year deal, so hopefully next year they can be even bigger & better, but you have to feel for the folks who worked so hard to plan a successful event and then the unthinkable happens. Speaking of which, I definitely feel bad for the NCAA men’s & women’s basketball players who had no idea they were playing their last games. With “March Madness” called off, those players never got to walk off the court in uniform for a last time knowing it would be the last time. The NCAA has granted spring athletes an extra year of eligibility moving forward. Here’s hoping they do the same for the basketball players as well. On the high school level, COVID-19 is having a major impact on both winter & spring sports. The state basketball tournament came to a screeching halt with six boys & six girls state finals left to be played. The Atlantic City, Wildwood Catholic & St. Augustine boys and the Ocean City girls all would’ve played in state finals. Wildwood Catholic, the South Jersey Non-Public B champion was considered a Tournament of Champions contender to win it all. Again, instead of the season ending on the court, it ended for them with an email from the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). Also in high school, the spring sports season is in jeopardy. The NJSIAA has put out a statement saying, “The NJSIAA remains committed to providing student-athletes as many opportuni-

If we cannot accommodate the traditional postseason tournament structure, we will look at other options and other opportunities.” What that essentially means is if and when New Jersey high schools reopen the NJSIAA will do everything it can to provide a spring sports season, and that’s a good thing. Folks on social media were worried the NJSIAA would overreact and cancel all spring sports, but for now, they’re trying to hold some portion of a spring season. Back to the professional level now, as the Flyers were in Tampa when the season shut down. They had won nine out of their last ten games and were the hottest team in hockey. With 13 games left, the Flyers were almost guaranteed a playoff spot, and potentially the chance to go far in the playoffs. Now, they have to sit and wait until the league can get going again. One piece of good news, is that the NHL Board of Governors had each team asking their home arena if there were dates available in July. That says to me the league is hoping to resume the season & play the Stanley Cup playoffs in full. Let’s hope…! Major League Baseball is a strange one right now as Spring Training is called off and all the players have been told to head home. Phillies manager Joe Girardi told his players to keep

Some have written that this might be a GOOD thing for the Phillies as Andrew McCutchen will get more time to heal. Jake Arrieta had some shoulder stiffness and now he gets extra time to heal. Seranthony Dominguez had a setback in his return from an elbow injury and gets extra time to heal. You see where I’m going with this…? The delay of the start of the season might not be a BAD thing as far as the Phillies are concerned. In football, the Eagles closed Lincoln Financial Field and also shut down the NovaCare Complex where their headquarters are, but the NFL continues to operate during one of its busiest times. The “legal tampering” period began and right before it did, the Eagles started things off by making sure to re-sign defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway to a one year contract. Ridgeway is 25 and played in seven games for the Eagles last season, starting five. The Birds then went out and made a big move by reaching an agreement with former Steelers nose tackle Javon Hargrave for three years and $39 million, solidifying the defensive tackle spot opposite Fletcher Cox. Among the players leaving was reserve offensive lineman Halapoulivaati Vaitai, who agreed to a hefty five-year,

Penn University says it will try to put on a one-day meet in late May or early June, but it won’t be the same. Sad that the venerable Penn Relays have become the latest event to be sidelined by COVID-19 It was a weird week in entertainment as famous actors & actresses were out their promoting their projects as the news kept telling folks to stay home and not gather in groups. Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were the first big-name celebrities to come down with the coronavirus. The couple was in Australia shooting a movie when they got the news.

Based on the latest guidance from public health officials and out of an abundance of caution, the city will take the following actions to limit the risk of transmitting coronavirus (COVID-19). As of Tuesday (March 17), the Ocean City Community Center (including the Ocean City Free Public Library, Aquatic and Fitness Center, Arts Center, Historical Museum and Senior Center) will be closed. The Ocean City Sports and Civic Center and other city facilities also will be closed, and all Recreation Department programs suspended until further notice. All special events through the end of April will be canceled. This includes the OC Con Comic and Memorabilia Show, Girls Weekend, the Great Egg Hunts on the beach and other Easter events, the Easter Sunrise Service, the Doo Dah Parade, the Mr. Mature America Pageant and the Sports Memorabilia Show, among others. These closings and cancellations are based on recommendations that one of the best ways to slow the spread of the virus is to avoid large, crowded gatherings.
