We're All Irish On St. Patrick's Day

early half of Americans will take part in a day of celebration on March 17th. Whether you are of Irish decent or not, St. Patrick’s Day has become a worldwide celebration of Irish history and culture. Many commonly mistake leprechauns as bringing good luck or fortune. In folklore, the leprechaun is a small fairy with a beard. Short in stature, these mischievous creatures would end up playing tricks, deceive people. Shamrocks, or three-leaf clovers, are common symbols for the Holy Trinity, but Americans commonly get this confused to the fourleaf clover. Four-leaf clovers stand for faith, hope, love and luck. Legend believes that finding one is a symbol of good fortune, but your odds of finding one are slim. "Y
ou better thank your lucky stars," was a common phrase around my house while growing up. I usually heard it when things could have gone wrong, but didn't. Such as the time I left my shopping bag at the food court in the mall and it was still there when I ran back. "Whew!" I would declare as my mom reminded me to "Thank my lucky stars." Were you born under a lucky star? Does luck follow you around? Do you remember carrying a rabbit's foot in the 80s to ensure luck on a math test? I cringe when I think about that one. (Poor bunny!) Different cultures have put faith in a variety of lucky charms and symbols. In several European countries, carp fish scales are considered lucky. Carp is a traditional Christmas meal. Once the meal is over, people retrieve the carp scales and sometimes put them in their wallets until the following Christmas Eve for good luck.

The Hamsa Hand, or Khamsa, is common in both Jewish and Muslim communities as a sign of good luck. It is said to protect people from negative energy and bring happiness to the beholder. In China, red bats are thought to ward off evil, so they're worn as lucky charms. Five red bats stand for the five good fortunes of health, longevity, love, wealth, and virtue. In Ireland, four-leaf clovers are a St. Patrick's Day tradition and are a symbol of good luck.The leaves are said to stand for faith, hope, love, and luck. It's often said that Ireland is home to more fourleaf clovers than any other place, giving meaning to the phrase "the luck of the Irish." Do these symbols make a person lucky, or is there more to the story? Rather than searching for a four leaf clover (it is estimated to be 1 every in 10,000), here are eight ways experts say you can improve your luck: ●● Be Mindful. When you are operating mindlessly, on auto-pilot, you are unlikely to observe opportunities or take advantage of a situation. ●● Be proactive. "Lucky" people make things happen. They are proactive rather than reactive. They make their future. ●● Be opportunistic. People who prac-
tice opportunism see opportunities all around them and are able to use them to their advantage. ●● Be insightful. We all have insight to varying degrees, yet some are better than others at being open to hearing those inner voices. ●● Be flexible. Life is always changing. Appreciating the dynamics of life and being able to go with the flow provides enormous advantages to finding new ways of doing things or creating opportunities. ●● Be optimistic. Lucky people with an optimistic outlook are better able to identify the silver lining in any given situation. ●● Think out of the box. An innovative redesign or a new creative strategy is the one that will appear to be lucky. ●● Be resilient. When at first you don't succeed, try, try, and try again. As Thomas Edison said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that didn't work" before finding the one way that did. As we approach St Patrick's Day, we wish you good cheer and the luck of the Irish.

Lucy to Welcome Overnight Guests By Nick Leonetti
L
ucy the Elephant will open her tusks for a rare overnight sta. On February 27, it was announced that a few lucky guests are going to be able to enjoy overnight stays for a limited time only. Judging by all the publicity this upcoming event is receiving, there is no doubt that all the available reservations will be booked up and fast. What exactly is Lucy anyway? Well, for starters, she is the largest elephant in the world. Weighing in at around 90 tons, Lucy is 65 feet in height and 60 feet in length. Another interesting fact is that she is also the oldest roadside attraction in the country. Her history is an interesting and checkered one, worthy of note. James V. Lafferty, and Irish-American inventor, constructed Lucy the Elephant in 1881, and since then the giant structure has taken on many forms. Originally, Lafferty utilized the elephant’s carriage as a place where potential customers of surrounding real estate could come and view land parcels, due to the view. Later, she functioned as a restaurant, bar and tavern, office, and cottage. By the 1960s, people seemed to lose interest in the structure, and Lucy quickly fell into disrepair, which happens often with old structures. She was old in the sixties, and a simple Google search will show the reader how her tin covers were literally falling off.

Luckily, in 1969 a Margate Civic Association formed (later to become Save Lucy Committee) saved Lucy from being demolished. In 1970, Lucy was scooted over a 100-yards into a city-owned lot and given a much-needed tune-up inside and out. She was closed until 1974, which is how long it took to complete all of the major renovations. It’s worth pointing out that other than a new steel buttress and a replicated carriage, Lucy is still the same as she has been 1881. By 1976, Lucy became a National Historic Landmark, which keeps her protected by the government. Since this particular point in time, she has become a popular tourist attraction and never ceases to be an impressive view while driving down Atlantic Avenue. Among all the other firsts, it’s interesting to note that Lucy the Elephant is the only National Historic Landmark listed on Airbnb. The goal for this recent endeavor by the Save Lucy Committee

is simple: the three nights in March (17, 18, and 19) Lucy the Elephant will be open for guests will work as a fundraising opportunity due to much needed renovations. Richard Helfant, the executive director of the committee, has been quoted as saying that “Lucy’s been painted so many times that her skin is at the point where it bubbles off. We’re at a time where we have to strip her down to the bare metal, prime and repaint. It’s a massive undertaking” (CNN). And this massive undertaking is not by any means cheap. It is going to cost roughly $500,000, so raising as much money as possible is key. Obviously, this little stint in hospitality will be a drop in the bucket compared to what needs to be raised in total; however, it is an ingenious publicity stunt: a testing of the waters for future, innovative ways to fundraise. The room set-up for future guests is a breathtaking replica of 1902 decor. At the start, all guests are to be given
a personal tour by Helfant, as well as the Mayor of Margate, Michael Becker. There will be dinner at a local restaurant (yet to be determined), and then guests will be chauffeured back to Lucy to spend their night. A staff member will be on hand throughout the evening in the gift shop if there are any questions or concerns. Guests will have access to all parts of Lucy during their stay. Anyone who is interested in spending the night in Lucy the Elephant will be given the chance to book a reservation on March 5 at noon. The price is a mere $138, representing her age. This is firstcome, first-serve so as soon as the portal on Airbnb opens it’s most likely going to work more like a raffle than anything else. It will be the luck of the draw, and this writer looks forward to hearing about the lucky guests’ experiences inside the biggest elephant on earth.

Meet Mateo, one special kid By Cindy Christy Fertsch
T
hree year old Mateo has a smile that can light up any room. When I met him in his home last week in Atlantic City, he was a joyful little boy who was very loving and interactive with both his parents, Chris Filiciello and Lorena Chicas and his baby brother, Miguel. He even showed off a little, identifying letters of the alphabet and numbers that were very advanced for his age. Mateo is clearly the apple of his parents' eyes. When they talk about him you can see them light up as well. Mateo also happens to have Down syndrome. "When we were told of the possibility of him having Down syndrome during our pregnancy, it was definitely a shock. But we knew Mateo would be loved no matter what," shares Lorena. "We refused to have an amniocentesis because it was not going to make a difference. We were having our baby no matter what. In the days that followed I felt God was talking to me and reassuring me that everything would be ok. He gave me peace, clarity and allowed me to see
that Mateo was chosen specifically for us." Chris and Lorena want to bring awareness to all that having a child with Down syndrome is NOT a tragedy. "It is definitely a road less traveled but oh so worth it. We would not change Mateo at all." Ocean City Youth Group Helps Give Kids the World

hile some high schoolers spent Presidents’ Day weekend skiing or just enjoying a few days off school, the youth group from St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Ocean City was busy giving kids the world. Located in Central Florida, Give Kids the World (GKTW) is a non-profit, 84-acre “storybook” resort that provides weeklong, cost-free vacations to children with critical illnesses and their families. They partner with over 250 wish-making organizations to help fulfill their wish trip to Central Florida. The youth group sent seven high school students and six adults on a missions trip to GKTW where they volunteered their time to help families with very sick children enjoy a week of fun at the park/resort. The team divided up; some helped serve food to

Celine Dion Brought Her “Courage World Tour” to Atlantic City and Filled Boardwalk Hall

eline Dion brings out the best there is in concert music as she brought her Courage World Tour to Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, Saturday evening, February 22, 2020. Pairing the singer who possesses a voice filled with power and unbelievable range, who also displays a mixture of vulnerability and humility with the best medium sized venue in the country, makes for an historical entertainment night difficult to surpass. Celine Dion is ONE of a kind. She took the stage at 8:20 pm and beginning at 8:21 the filled hall saw the unleashing of her powerful uncompromising voice, her ability to dance with ease across the stage embracing everyone in the audience. Within five minutes Dion had everyone on their feet as immersed in her sounds. Dion’s vocals are undoubtedly impressive. She uses her warmth to draw everyone to her, puts them at at ease as if they were family. This was not a concert. It was an amazing show that provided attendees with large side, front and upper screens that allowed a clear and unobstructed view as she performed and moved around the stage and of course there were the many colored
flashing lights, that not only enhanced Dion’s elaborate costumes , but mesmerized the audience. The above was just a touch on the background that made the concert a show. Women's Surf Club rides the waves of Nicaragua
A
fter a very successful Women's Surf Night this past summer, the Heritage Women's Surf Club ventured down to SOLID Surf and Adventure in Nicaragua for their first "women only" surf retreat. It was a huge adventure and success Ocean City, NJ (February 27, 2020) - This past summer, Heritage Surf and Sport established their first “women only” surf night. The group turned out to be nearly 20 women getting together to surf every Wednesday evening. Heritage, along with instructors Allison Ocanto and Amanda Strube provided boards and wetsuits, coaching and tips once a
week throughout the summer. This past Valentine's Day, a handful of the group flew down to Nicaragua to test the waters there.
SOLID Sur f and Adventure hosted the women for an all inclusive surf retreat. SOLID is located on the closest beach to Managua (the capital of Nicaragua) and sits right on the Pacific ocean so you can check the waves as you drink your coffee. The week turned into a once in a lifetime experience with great waves, good food and endless laughter. When the group wasn’t in the water, they volunteered their time at the local school serving food at lunch time, swimming in tide pools or hiking up an active volcano and sliding down. Heritage will be continuing this popular surf group this summer and invites any women eager to learn to surf, to come and join the group. They will be offering two sessions this summer, one week night and one weekend morning, however, the Women’s Surf
Night is just one part of the Heritage Surf Club. Heritage Surf Club also provides private and group surf lessons, surf camps, sur f trips and women’s surf nights. Plant Peas on St. Patrick’s Day for a Lucky Spring Crop

any gardeners are eagerly waiting for the last frost dates to pass so that they can start sowing seeds directly in their gardens. In our area, that could be between March 30 - April 30. Although, if you want to be really safe, you can use the rule of thumb of waiting until Mother’s Day. (My favorite way to celebrate is spending part of the day planting flowers). But waiting this long will really shorten your growing season. To find your estimated first and last frost dates by zip code, go to websites such as almanac.com/gardening or davesgarden.com. Fortunately, some vegetables, known as “cool-season” vegetables, actually prefer growing in cooler temperatures and can withstand a light frost or even a freeze. These vegetables will give you a jump start on your growing season, and if planted in time, will yield an early to mid-spring crop. Some

Diabetes Training Camp comes to Margate
I
f you live with the challenges of type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes, there is local program that is designed specifically to help you. Diabetes Training Camp is hosting a 3-day Type 2 Boot Camp program from March 20th - March 22nd at the Milton and Betty Katz JCC in Margate, NJ. Attendees will learn how to take control of their diabetes and build a sustainable plan to live the life they want to live. Led by SHORE Endocrinologist Dr.

Fight of The Flu with Food

lu is in the air. What do we do? Food is what gives your body the energy and nutrients it needs to function. Such effects are equally vital when you have the flu. Still, it’s all about eating the right foods for your condition. Consider eating the following foods when you have the flu. Broth! Whether you prefer chicken, beef, or vegetable, broth is one of the best things you can eat when you have the flu. You can eat it as soon as your symptoms begin and until you have fully recovered. Broth helps prevent dehydration, and the warm elements can help soothe a sore throat and relieve congestion. When I was a kid our favorite neighbor would swing by with what she called her “Jewish penicillin”. Soup did the trick when anyone was under the weather. Chicken soup combines the benefits of broth along with additional ingredients. Cut-up chicken provides your body with iron and protein, and you’ll also gain nutrients from carrots, herbs, and celery. You can eat chicken soup throughout the duration of the flu to help keep you hydrated and satiated; just be sure to watch the salt content. While you might think of garlic as a food-flavoring agent, it’s actually been used in alternative medicine for a variety of ailments for centuries. Garlic supplements taken by adults with the flu found enhanced immunity and reduced symptom severity. You don’t necessarily have to take supplements, though. Eating raw garlic may also be beneficial. Due to the immune-enhancing
effects, consider eating garlic at the first signs of the flu. Yogurt with live cultures not only can help soothe a sore throat but can also boost your immune system and also contains protein.You can eat yogurt while your throat is sore, but just be sure to choose whole yogurts without any added sugars. Vitamin C is an important nutrient to help boost your immune system, which is especially important when you’re sick. While supplements can help, your body can absorb nutrients like vitamin C more effectively from the foods you eat.Consider snacking on vitamin C–rich fruits while you have the flu. Some fruits high in vitamin C include strawberries, tomatoes, and citrus fruits. Eat your spinach! Spinach, kale, and other leafy greens can also help boost your immune system when you have the flu. They have both vitamin C and vitamin E, another immune-enhancing nutrient. Consider combining leafy greens with fruit in a smoothie, or eat them raw with a drizzle of lemon and olive oil. It’s best to eat these immune-boosting foods throughout the duration of your illness. Broccoli is a nutrient powerhouse that can benefit your body when you have the flu. Eating just one serving will provide immune-boosting vitamins C and E, along with calcium and fiber. Consider eating broccoli when your appetite returns toward the middle or end of the flu. You can also eat broccoli soup; just remember to check the sodium content. When you’re sick, you want comfort. A hot bowl of oatmeal can be a soothing, nutritious food choice. Oatmeal, like other whole grains, is also a natural source of immune-boosting vitamin E. It also contains polyphenol antioxidants as well as
immune-strengthening properties. Choose whole oats for the most benefits. Towards the end of the flu, you might have increased sinus and chest congestion. Certain spices, such as pepper and horseradish, can help break up congestion so you can breathe better. However, avoid spicy foods when you have a sore throat. It’s easy to get dehydrated with the flu. Not only do you eat and drink less and have an overall reduced water intake, but you also lose water with sweat when you have a fever. Not only are fluids important for your body functions in general, but they can also help break up congestion and stave off infections. When it comes to hydrating beverages, water still ranks number one. It also acts as a natural detox for your body. If you aren’t a fan of water or are looking for something with more flavor, you can also drink: ●● broth ●● ginger tea ●● herbal tea with honey ●● honey and lemon tea (mix equal parts with hot water) ●● 100 percent juices (look for products without added sugars) Low-sugar sports drinks or other electrolyte-containing beverages, such as Pedialyte, may be used if you’re dehydrated only. Although they’re not typical of the seasonal flu, vomiting and diarrhea are symptoms that could warrant the use of electrolytes. Knowing what to avoid eating with the flu is perhaps just as important as what you should eat. When you’re sick with the flu, avoid the following items: ●● Alcohol. This lowers your immune system and causes dehydration. ●● Caffeinated beverages. Items such as coffee, black tea, and soda can make you more dehydrated. Plus, many of these
beverages may contain sugar. Hard or jagged foods. Crunchy crackers, chips, and foods with similar textures can aggravate a cough and sore throat. ●● Processed foods. Whether these are from a fast food joint or made from a box, the more processed a food is, the fewer nutrients you’ll get. With the flu, your body is trying to heal itself, so it’s important to support the process with whole, nutritious foods. Eating the right foods and staying hydrated are important to help you get over the flu. While the worst of the symptoms may be gone after five days, it can take one to two weeks to get over the flu entirely. Your recovery may take even longer if you develop a secondary infection from the flu. As a rule of thumb, you should stay hydrated and make your best effort to eat flu-friendly foods until your symptoms go away and your appetite returns to normal. ●●

I Say Sauce, You Say … Gravy? By Chef Joseph Massaglia
I
n my previous Shore Local article, I discussed that fact that there is no one recipe for a perfect meatball. Every Nonna has her own recipe, and we all love our Nonna’s meatballs, no question there. And I’m sure you also like your Nonna’s sauce or her gravy. What! Gravy? When I arrived in Philadelphia as a young man from Italy 40-plus years ago, I heard people taking about eating gravy on their pasta. I had no idea what they meant. There is no such thing as gravy in Italy. My new American wife explained to me that in America gravy was a brown sauce that was served with meat after roasting. But the Italian Americans in Philadelphia were calling what I knew as sauce (or rago or sugo), gravy. And today, people in Philadelphia (and some parts of northern New Jersey, Boston, the Bronx and Chicago) still call it gravy. Interestingly, I think most people here in our South Jersey area call it sauce.

By the way, if you have an interest in learning a bit more about sauce versus gravy, check out my friend Lorraine Ranalli’s book, Gravy Wars: South Philly Foods, Feuds & Attytudes. But as with meatballs, there really isn’t just one recipe for sauce/gravy. And there are so many different sauces that I can only cover the tip of the sauce iceberg in this article. There are sauces just for fish, meat and/or poultry. Then there are regional variations for all those sauces. And for pasta there are red sauces, green sauces and white sauces, too. According to Wikipedia, there are 27 categories of sauces, and many, many varieties of sauces within each category. Mama Mia, we Italians love our sauces! So, where to begin. First, let me start with Marinara Sauce, which is thought to have originated in Naples and dates back to the late 1600s. In Italy, Alla Marinara properly refers to a sauce made with tomatoes, basil, oregano and anchovies; sometimes olives or capers are added. Marinara is derived from the Italian word for mariner, sailor, or from the sea, hence a true marinara sauce contains anchovies in its base recipe. However, in America, the term Marinara Sauce has come to mean a plain tomato sauce made with garlic and var-
ious herbs, and sometimes onions. But in some countries Spaghetti Marinara is a pasta dish where red sauce is mixed with a variety of seafood and served over pasta. (In Italy that would properly be called Alla Pescatore.) Italy’s most famous meat sauce comes from Bologna – Ragù alla Bolognese. Dating back to the 18th century, this rich and hearty slow-cooked sauce typically includes minced beef, pancetta, sautéed vegetables and wine. However, ragù can be made with any type of meat, including game and poultry. It’s traditionally served with a flat, ribbon-like egg pasta such as tagliatelle or fettuccine, not spaghetti. One of my most favorite sauces is Sugo All'Amatriciana, also known as Salsa All'Amatriciana. It’s a traditional Italian pasta sauce containing guanciale (cured pork cheek), pecorino cheese, tomato and sometimes onion. Originating from the town of Amatrice in the mountainous Lazio region, Amatriciana sauce is one of the best know pasta sauces in Italian cuisine. It’s usually served with bucatini or perciatelli pasta, or another pasta with a hole in the center to absorb the rich sauce both inside and out. And you can find it on my menu at Mama Mia’s. Cacio e pepe or "cheese and pepper" pasta is very, very popular right now. As the name suggests, the ingredients of the dish are very simple: black pepper, grated Pecorino-Romano cheese, and spaghetti. But even though the ingredients are minimal, the techniques and its simplicity elevate the dish to fantastic heights. To make it, cooked pasta (pasta should have a rough surface like rigatoni) is poured into a pan containing the grated Pecorino-Romano mixed with black pepper and a little of the hot, starchy, pasta cooking water. The heat melts the cheese, and the starches in the water help bind the pepper and cheese to the pasta. While not authentic cacio e pepe, seafood or bacon is sometimes added. Another very popular dish is Aglio e Olio, which literally means olive oil and garlic, and also hails from Naples (or some say Abruzzo). This dish is made by sautéing sliced fresh garlic in olive oil with the addition of red pepper flakes, parsley and anchovies. It’s attributed to the poor peasants who had to make due with very little and hence, its simplicity and wonderful taste. Pesto is an uncooked sauce originating in Genoa, the capital city of Liguria. The word pesto is derived from the Italian pestare, which means to pound or to crush. According to tradition, the ingredients are "crushed" or ground in a marble mortar through a circular motion of a wooden pestle.
Pesto traditionally consists of crushed garlic, European pine nuts, coarse salt, basil leaves, hard cheese such as Parmigiano-Reggiano (also known as Parmesan cheese) or Pecorino Sardo (cheese made from sheep's milk), all blended with olive oil. Today pesto can be made with many different ingredients. Sometimes parsley can be substituted for basil and walnuts or almonds for pine nuts. And I think most people now use a blender or food processor to make pesto today; I certainly do. Finally, any article on Italian sauces wouldn’t be complete without the inclusion of Spaghetti Alla Puttanesca, or "spaghetti in the style of a prostitute.” This is an Italian pasta dish supposedly invented in Naples in the mid-20th century – yes, that recently. Its ingredients typically include tomatoes, olive oil, anchovies, olives, capers and garlic, served over pasta. There is no clear-cut reason how this dish came to be named as it is. Some say that because it is quick to prepare, ladies of the night could prepare it between clients. Other say that because it is so fragrant, the same ladies would prepare it to entice clients to their establishments. Whatever the reason, this is one Italian pasta sauce you’ll want to try if you haven’t done so already. You can make it with ingredients from your pantry, and it really can be done very quickly. A Retrospective on South Jersey History
George May and the story of Mays Landing By Stefen Klenk
F
rom Smithville to Sea Isle City, and Brigantine to Buena Vista Township, South Jersey is filled with a rich history that dates back centuries. What were once small towns have since been transformed into vibrant communities. Over the coming weeks, I will be taking a look back into our region’s history, providing detail on each town and how it got its name, its most notable residents, and events that have changed the course of our area. And there is no better place to start than in Mays Landing. Situated in the heart of Hamilton Township, Mays Landing is a community that sits along the Great Egg Harbor River and Lake Lenape. The community is named after Captain George May, who, in the 1740s, was appointed as a surveyor and agent for the West Jersey Society. May, who was a former native of Burlington, New Jersey, and a blacksmith, moved to our area with his wife, Susan Thompson, and began purchasing land from Edmund Iliff. Originally from Blackbird, Delaware, Iliff was a merchant who had purchased two tracts of land near Babcock Creek, where he set up a saw mill and a pair of dwelling houses. Iliff passed in 1749, and his property went up for auction that summer. His estate was purchased by George May for a cost of only seven pounds. George May continued to purchase land throughout Babcock Creek and in the immediate region into the 1760s, until his death later that decade. The land he had purchased was later sold at auction, with the town and area subsequently renamed Mays Landing a short time afterward. The town of Mays Landing was a major trading port in its early years. A shipyard was set up along the Great Egg Harbor River, where ships and vessels were constructed. Mays Landing played a key role in the shipbuilding industry throughout the 19th century, along with other coastal communities in Atlantic County, with shipyards also set up in Absecon, Brigantine, and Port Republic. One important piece of infrastructure for Mays Landing during the 1880s was the railroad. At one point, passenger service was offered between the city and Newfield, but was abandoned in 1858. In November 1879, construction began on the West Jersey and Atlantic Railroad, a

rail line that would provide service and excursion trips between Atlantic City and Camden. The West Jersey Line began full operation in June 1880 and would remain in operation through the 1950s. Today, a portion of the line is used as a bike trail that extends through Mays Landing and Egg Harbor Township.
Just seven weeks after opening, a major incident had occurred. On August 11, 1880, over 1,000 members of St. Anne’s Church in Philadelphia were returning from a day-long trip to the shore when an oncoming locomotive rear-ended the train. The collision, which occurred over the Great Egg Harbor River, led to several casualties. Many of the townspeople in Mays Landing assisted in the rescue efforts, offering their homes to the injured.

Kean Taps Brown for Leadership Role By Cindy Christy Fertsch

epublican Senate Leader Tom Kean, Jr. announced he appointed State Senator Chris Brown for a second term as Deputy Conference Leader, making Brown the only Republican legislator from South Jersey with a legislative leadership position in either the State Senate or the General Assembly. “New Jersey’s future depends on representatives like Chris Brown,” said Kean. “That is why I am pleased he once again accepted a leadership role in our caucus.” Working hand in glove with Kean, Brown is helping win Republican seats in South Jersey. For over a decade stretching back to 2007, the South Jersey Democrat machine amassed a staggering string of victories throughout South Jersey until Brown secured his seat twice. "Chris proved in 2015 and 2017
how to win a seat while being outspent four to one in a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans by 13,000 voters,” Kean said. “That’s why he was the only Republican in the entire country to flip a Democrat seat when he was elected to the State Senate and why he is a Republican role model for winning tough campaigns.” Kean noted that's why he tapped Brown early to spearhead Testa's campaign and thanked Brown for playing a key role in helping first-time candidate for office Michael Testa win his First District Senate seat. Brown was an early advocate and supporter of Testa’s candidacy while actively raising money and making invaluable introductions to key groups and supporters for Testa’s bid. Further, working with Kean, Brown brought on board Brittany O'Neill, who developed her skills under Brown's tutelage, first serving as his intern and as then his campaign manager 2017, to manage Testa's campaign. he calendar has turned to March and from the world of sports, that can only mean one thing… “March Madness” is officially here! Now, I know most people just use that term to refer to the Men’s NCAA Division 1 Basketball Tournament, but it can really refer to a month that is both wild and crazy for all varieties of sports. Quick plug – don’t forget to check out my preview piece on the M.A.A.C. Tournament that’s coming to Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall (March 10-14). You
can read that story on page 42. Since I last wrote, the Flyers have gotten red hot. The Sixers are trying to win without two key starters. The Phillies have won more than they’ve lost in Spring Training. The Eagles are trying to find some new talent at the NFL Combine. Finally, on the local level, it’s another thrilling Cape Atlantic League Tournament in girls & boys basketball. The playoffs are now here, and don’t forget that Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall will be the epicenter for state wrestling this week. From the entertainment world, I’m going to DVR a show that was shot in Philly last year, and I have high hopes for it. Plus, we’ll transition from hopes to hoops, as the one movie that is peaking my interest right now is The Way Back,

As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ●● I love starting off with hockey, because it means my beloved Philadelphia Flyers are playing as good as they have all season right now. As of this writing, they are fresh off a 5-3 win in New York over the Rangers and have won a season-high six in a row. The biggest thing I see in the Flyers is depth throughout all four of the lines after GM Chuck Fletcher made two trade deadline moves. Derek Grant centering the 3rd line and Nate Thompson (no relation) centering the 4th line have provided some stability to a team that needs scoring from more than just the top two lines. ●● At the end of the day, you win in the NHL playoffs with goaltending, and Carter Hart is starting to win games on the road, instead of just at home. Watching Hart make key saves at Madison Square Garden while future Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist struggled in the other net was pretty telling for me. The Flyers are hoping to ride Hart to a deep playoff run, and if they keep winning, they might get home ice to start things off!

You want to talk about a difference between home and on the road? Take a look at the Sixers where they are a league best 28-2 at home at the Wells Fargo Center and just 9-22 now on the road. They are also dealing with no Joel Embiid and no Ben Simmons because of injury. Embiid’s return at least seems not too far off as he’s dealing with a left shoulder sprain. Simmons and his status is much more troubling as he’s been dealing with a pinched nerve in his back. If the Sixers are to have any hope of making noise in the NBA playoffs, they need BOTH of those guys on the court. One final Sixers note as the NBA is always full of “Cinderella Stories” as I call them—when a guy comes out of nowhere to all of a sudden succeed. That happened for Shake Milton, the former G League player who came out and torched the Clippers for 26 points in the first half alone, on the way to a career-high 39 points in a 136-130 loss. It was so fun to watch the 23-year-old literally come of age on national television as he tied a NBA record for consecutive 3-pointers made at one point. Here’s hoping we see more great things from Malik “Shake” Milton moving forward!

The big news for the Phillies out of Spring Training is that outfielder Andrew McCutchen will NOT be ready for Opening Day against the Marlins. He continues to recover from a torn ACL last June, but hopefully he won’t be too far behind the rest of the guys. Meanwhile, the Phillies are competitive in Florida so far, as new manager Joe Girardi tries to figure out the best players to put on his active 26-man roster. In football, the only personnel move the Eagles have made was to release linebacker Nigel Bradham a few weeks back. While they are at the NFL combine looking for new talent, questions still remain about what they will do about veteran players like Jason Peters, Alshon Jeffery, and Malcolm Jenkins. NFL Free Agency begins on March 18th, so stay tuned! One more football note as CBS is going to reportedly pay Tony Romo $17 million per year to stay as an NFL analyst on their top broadcast team with Jim Nantz. Woah…! I think Romo is outstanding at what he does, but $17 million worth of outstanding? Back here at home, a major tip of the cap to the Atlantic City girls and the Wildwood Catholic boys as they each respectively won the Cape Atlantic League Tournament. It’s the first CAL Tourney Title for the Lady Vikings ever, and their 2nd league title since 1992. For the Crusaders, they become the first team to capture the conference tournament championship four times. What a great way to get us ready for the state playoffs, which begin this week. Lastly, wrestlers, coaches, and parents from the entire state will all converge on Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall this coming weekend (March 5-8). If you’ve never been, it’s quite a sight to see eight mats across the floor of the Hall with pockets of supporters yelling constantly as high school wrestlers chase their dream of a state title. For the second year in a row, there will be girls wrestling on the mats as well…to which I say…”Awesome!” Just a few from entertainment now, as I’m going to DVR the new TV show on AMC called Dispatches from Elsewhere. It was shot in Philadelphia last year and along with Jason Segal of How I Met Your Mother fame, it includes big names like Sally Field in the cast. The trailer reminds me a little bit of Lost, so I’ll give it a chance and hopefully get rewarded. At the movies, I’m excited to see the new Ben Affleck drama The Way Back. Described as “A wid-

Jersey Fresh Farm to School Program

T
here is a wonderful program through the New Jersey Department of Agriculture called Jersey Fresh Farm to School which encourages New Jersey farms to partner with schools to improve nutrition, provide healthy options and provide nutrition education opportunities for students and staff. Every month they choose a different fruit or vegetable to be highlighted in the schools. I had the privilege of being invited as a guest chef at Seaview Elementary School in Linwood in February to prepare a dish with the featured vegetable of the month, sweet potatoes! It was such a special experience for both the students and myself. My task was to come up with a recipe using sweet potatoes and offer it during all lunches for students in kindergarten through fourth grade to
try. The challenge was that I wanted to make sure every student was able to taste it, regardless of food allergies. I also needed a recipe that would be relatively easy to prepare. This meant that I didn’t want to use an oven so the sweet potatoes would be raw. What I came up with was a spiralized vegetable salad with sweet potato noodles, cucumber noodles, chopped chives (I have found over the years that kids

The response was overwhelmingly positive! Every student who tried the salad got a sticker on which they were able to indicate whether they loved it, liked it or it wasn’t for them. I thought this really impactful because it showed students that trying the salad was really important and that it’s okay if they didn’t like it. Everyone has a different palate and the only way to discover new foods is by trying them! Interestingly, I found that many of the students in the lower grades were very cautious about
trying new foods whereas students in third and fourth grades were lined up for seconds! Whenever people ask me how to get their picky kids to try new foods, I advise that you can not force someone to eat something. What you can do is model good eating behavior and make healthy foods available as much as possible. Two foods that my daughter would not touch for years were mushrooms and salmon. After seeing them repeatedly offered at meals, she started eating them and now loves both! Giving kids the opportunity to try new healthy foods brings me so much joy. I am extremely grateful to the New Jersey Department of Agriculture for creating this program and to the administration of Seaview Elementary School for placing value on providing students with healthy food options. For March the featured vegetable is lettuce. Stay tuned to see what I create at Seaview later this month. It’s going to be good!

isiting the Irish Pub in Atlantic City is like walking into a friend’s home. You instantly feel welcome at a place that’s ready to engage with you and make you part of its history. First opened in 1900 as the Elwood Hotel, the building has stood the test of time, with many of the original features seemingly unchanged today. As you enter through the gift shop and step into the pub, you can tell a good time is about to be had. Like many pubs in Ireland, the walls are covered with memorabilia. But owner Cathy Burke is careful to point out that they are not trying to be an Irish pub in Ireland, but an Irish pub in America! Why Every Woman Should be Lifting Weights

y goal as a fitness columnist is to consistently connect every article with fluidity. I want each and every article to flow into the next. This leads me to my next topic of strength and resistance training, which happens to be my favorite mode of exercise (if you haven’t already figured that out). Previously, we delved into those New Year's resolutions and how most of them revolved around weight loss. Many will join a gym and center their workouts around high intensity sessions on the treadmill, elliptical, spin class, or some type of cardio. While this may help you lose body fat, it will not give you a tight, toned, and healthy look. Strength training by way of resistance is a much more effective approach to achieve that tight, toned bod! Adding resistance

training to your workout routine will increase lean body mass and reduce body fat for women in particular. There are a lot of myths and misconceptions out there about strength training. Weight training is not just for men. As I mentioned in my previous article, weightlifting does not make you look bulky. Let’s set the record straight, because it is a myth. Many women associate resistance training or weightlifting as something only a man should do. They believe it leads to weight gain and bulkiness. The truth is, it may cause weight gain, and what I mean is, simply gains in lean body mass. Those are precisely the kind of gains you want. Your weight may possibly stay the same or even slightly increase, but you will look more lean and toned. Muscle is denser than fat, meaning it takes up less space. Pound for pound, they weigh the same. Muscle does not weigh more than fat. “Healthy” is not a number on the scale; it’s how you look and feel. That’s the bottom line. Remember that when you get so caught up in the number. Focus on what you want to gain, emotionally and physically. As long as you are noticing positive changes in how you look and feel, the number on the

How many strength training workouts do you need to do per week? I personally recommend at least two per week, but would lean towards three in total. Hitting all major muscle groups is vital. Mix it up by hitting
There are two types of strength training: heavy weight with low repetitions or light weights with high reps. Muscle gain will occur regardless of what training style you choose. You do not have to be a He-Man. Curling dumbbells the size of your head is not necessary. Strength training at whatever level you’re comfortable with yields results. Are you over thirty-five years of age? If the answer is yes, then you’ll want to listen to this. Sarcopenia is the gradual loss of muscle mass which occurs in women as they age. It is not a result of aging, but rather a result of inactivity. Older adults need to lift weights. Resistance training is the best way to prevent and reverse loss of muscle for older adults, especially women. Women who don’t exercise can lose up to eight percent muscle mass each decade due to inactivity. Strength training promotes bone development, not loss.

Views from the Shore: Understanding Common Baseball Injuries

s a long-time Seattle Mariners fan, I associate baseball “pain” with the agony of following a team that rarely wins, and in fact is the only team never to play in a World Series. But there’s also a different kind of pain involved with America’s Favorite Pastime, and those are the injuries suffered throughout the season. To learn more about these injuries, I spoke with Shore Physicians Group Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Mickey Bui, and he offered this insight: It’s that time of year when baseball in coming back into swing. As a sports doc, I’d like to take the opportunity to talk about baseball injuries. Some baseball injuries are often random when it comes to a high-impact play, like a hard slide into second, or a dive into a wall can cause. The more common, “baseball-specific” injuries are often position specific and overuse related. As a sports medicine surgeon, seeing my next patient is a baseball player, I want to know what position they play I can almost predict what injury they have based on this.
The next thing I want to know is if they are a year-round player—Year round players have much higher overuse injury rates than seasonal players who play multiple sports through the year. There is a reason why few kids in the Little League World Series do not make it to the top levels of college or professional ball: Their arms are burnt out. I’ll get off my soap box now. Let’s talk about baseball injuries. ●● Pitchers: There’s a lot to talk about here… Naturally, shoulder and elbow injuries are very common. When pitchers complain of a “dead-arm” where velocity and/or accuracy is down, I think of 2 things: ●● 1) SLAP tears. This stands for Superior Labrum Anterior to Posterior. The player will complain of a vague shoulder pain that isn’t serious, so he (or she) will play through it, but the level of pitching regresses noticeably. The biceps tendon attaches onto the superior labrum of the shoulder socket, and when there is a tear, the bicep doesn’t have a solid foundation to contract off of. Sometimes rest can resolve this, if it isn’t a full tear, but sometimes the pitcher needs to have surgery to have it repaired to regain the velocity and accuracy they had before.

Let the Games Begin Senior Moments by Charles P. Eberson
I
had no idea our 20-month-old granddaughter could perform the yoga pose referred to as “The Bridge'', but that is what she does when she doesn’t want me to hold her any more. She adds a half-turn rotation to it making it quite an advanced move where I have no choice but to put her down. This was the first time we had all three of our grandchildren spend the night. I guess Haley’s Comet was going to pass in front of the lunar eclipse during the Perseid meteor shower for this blessed event to occur, but that’s just my perspective. The truth is that their parents work so much that they want to spend their off time with the children. Before the baby, the 4-year-old, and the 6-year-old arrived, we got busy staging the house. This meant removing the bowl of chocolate kisses, anything that may be used as a weapon, any fragile knickknacks, and keeping the TV remote out of hands reach. I thought having grandchildren over would be our chance to treat them to some “goodies” that are forbidden at home and expand
their culinary experience, but alas, there are certain food allergies to consider, so we stick to the plan. No Happy Meal for these kids. As the time of arrival drew near, my wife and I sat in anxious anticipation. They soon stormed the gate, and in half an hour our living room looked like they had been here a month. Cries of “Pop Pop, read to me, play with me, wrestle with me, put a movie in, let me see your phone, I’m hungry, can we go to the playground,” soon overloaded me
as I watched the 20-month-old walk by holding a snow globe that my wife and I had overlooked. The gluten-free bread was ready, and we sat down for dinner after laying out our ground rules, which I thought were simple enough; no standing on the chairs or doing the floor exercise between bites. Everybody did well and the little ceramic bowl that the baby shattered on the floor was no great loss. I knew a few Tums later, I would be back in fighting shape. Tubby time was my
wife’s bailiwick, and all kids were bathed, moisturized, and dressed for bed, except for the 6-year-old who didn’t pack his pajamas. The two older children slipped into their sleeping bags which was a novelty for them and the 20-month-old occupied the spot next to my wife, my usual place. Mercifully, everyone slept through the night and in the morning were greeted with a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, pancakes, turkey bacon, blueberries, and non-dairy yogurt. Their father soon arrived, and the departure took on the resemblance of a Daytona speedway pit crew. Orders being barked, bags dragged down the porch steps, jackets half on, stuffed animals being clutched tightly, and car seat buckles snapped. A quick goodbye and back in the house we go. We pause. Princess Grace, who often spent part of her summers in Ocean City, was a great supporter of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and served as a judge at the 1976 Philadelphia Flower Show. The judges felt he accomplished his goal since the exhibit won the PHS Gold Medal for Landscape, and the Philadelphia Trophy for the “Landscape exhibit that demonstrates the best use of color”. In addition to the exhibits, attendees can participate in gardening workshops,
visit the interactive “Butterflies Live!” exhibit, practice a little DIY from the Make and Take area, or enjoy a Mediterranean-inspired meal at the “Bloomin Brunch”. A Life Well Lived ~ Marilyn Kleinberg
M
arilyn T. Kleinberg, 59, of Egg Harbor Township, passed Friday, February 28th, of complications from a liver disease at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. Marilyn was loved by all who knew her and none more than her beloved husband, Milton Byron. Marilyn was a communications specialist who worked to connect and empower women. In 2007, she launched a South Jersey chapter of eWomenNetwork and was its managing director until 2013. "Marilyn was a warm, giving and caring friend who would do anything for anyone. She loved supporting women and connecting successful women with each other, always encouraging women to go after their goals & dreams," shared Susan Berman, owner of Berman Travel. "These connections turned into lasting friendships for so many. She gave of herself and would do anything for anyone, she truly loved helping and connecting successful women with other successful women.She was loved by everyone who knew and our hearts are broken." Marilyn's work on behalf of others
culminated in 2010 when she founded Empowering Connections, a nonprofit designed to encourage its members to “reach for the stars,” according to its mission statement. Marilyn was the organization's president until last year, when she stepped down for health reasons. "Marilyn was a kind soul, and one of those women who had a sincere passion for connecting women in business. Not only did she lead by
example, and provide helpful resources & connections to fit the various members of her E-Women chapter, but her desire to help others in any way she could was simply contagious," shares Whitney Ullman of Go to Whitney celebrity interviews and entertainment. "We may not have seen each other often, but I will always remember our talks and how she glowed when she was able to help someone. Marilyn is a true example of what it means to network with purpose, and will always be a shining light that made an impact on everyone she met." Marilyn was diagnosed with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in 2018. She stopped working that fall so she could become “CEO of my health,” she said on LinkedIn. She underwent a liver transplant February
17th at Thomas Jefferson Hospital, but a prior blood condition caused her body to attack the new organ. In addition to her husband, Marilyn is survived by her stepsons Josh, Dalton, and Cole; a brother; two nieces; and a nephew. Plans for a celebration of life are pending.

She believes that women should be treated beyond their physical complaint. Dr. Rezvina believes we have a body, soul, yet we are the spirit. The conflict between a woman’s spirit needs and body needs can cause a shift in the ability to function and heal. This misalignment can lead to health problems and disease. or the first time since 2012, Atlantic City will host meaningful college basketball games in the month of March, as the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men’s and women’s college basketball tournaments will be held at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall from March 10th until the 14th. This is the first year of a three-year run for the MAAC Tournament in the resort, and hopefully the start of something special. It’s been eight years since Atlantic City has been involved in March Madness. The Men’s Atlantic 10 Tournament was held at Boardwalk Hall from 2007-2012, but if Temple, St. Joseph or LaSalle weren’t involved in the final, folks were critical of how well the event would draw. Here’s hoping that the MAAC is a perfect fit for AC. After all, three of the conference’s schools – Monmouth, St. Peter’s and Rider are all in New Jersey. Iona, Manhattan, Niagra, Siena, Marist, Canisius, Fairfield, and Quinnipiac are all close enough for the various fan bases to make the drive to Atlantic City. One thing I would argue, is that when the Atlantic 10 tournament was here, the resort didn’t have sports gambling. Now, you won’t be able to place a bet on the MAAC action, but
you will be able to put a wager down on other conference tournament games, like the Big East or the ACC that will be going on at the same time. Tickets are on sale now at www. BoardwalkHall.com. Ticket prices range from $10 to $40 for a single session on the women’s side and $15 to $50 for a single session on the men’s side. All-session tickets are also available for fans who would like to see multiple sessions throughout the championship. great drama on both the men’s and the women’s side as the conference champions earn the league's automatic bids to the 2020 NCAA Basketball Tournament, but traditionally, that’s been it. Since the league began back in 1982, the MAAC has had one atlarge bid make it to the “Big Dance”. That was league runner-up Manhattan back in 1995. So, if a school truly wants to go “dancing”, they must win it all in Atlantic City first! MAAC officials are excited about what Atlantic City has to offer as well… “Boardwalk Hall is an American institution and historic landmark. We are thrilled to give our players and coaches the opportunity to compete in the same arena that has featured Miss America, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and New Jersey legends Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi. The Atlantic City region has been incredibly supportive and we are looking forward to a great tournament and a variety of activities,” MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor said. And what would Tournament Week be without a special floor at Boardwalk Hall? The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) has unveiled the court design for the 2020 Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships at Atlantic City's Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall on March 10-14. The court was created by renowned Horner Flooring Company based in Dollar Bay, Michigan. The design includes the 2020 MAAC Basketball Championship logo, featuring iconic Boardwalk Hall, The Wheel at Steel Pier, and the MAAC Championship trophy. The court also showcases the “Do AC” icon from the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority,
along with the Boardwalk Hall, and Hercules Tire logos. The court is stained with two different light brown colors, with grey at the top of the key just above the MAAC wordmark in the foul lane. The floor itself depicts the grains of a traditional hardwood floor and the out-of-bounds and team bench areas are solid black. The seams of a basketball are also noticeable. The court consists of 225 individual 4 x 8 foot panels which will be assembled in Boardwalk Hall on Sunday, March 8, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for the following day. The MAAC shares the court with the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts, through a partnership with Horner. The court is made of maple, and Horner sources its lumber from sawmills and land owners who replant after each harvest. Horner is a 125 year old company that has made the floor for the NBA All-Star game for the last 26 years. Again, tickets are on sale now at www.BoardwalkHall.com
