A Jersey Girl Writes… …California Is Lacking…

I

grew up in New Jersey by the beach but for some reason it seemed like all I ever heard about was California. Everybody knew everything from California was the best. It seemed like California Dreaming was always on the radio and in summers the goal was a California tan. I played for hours with Malibu Barbie and if the kids on Beverly Hills 90210 wore it, it was cool. There is no doubt that I have LA Looks Hair Gel to thank for most of my awesome 80’s styles.

How could New Jersey ever possibly compare?

I was sure it couldn’t so, first chance I had I got on a plane to Los Angeles with California Here I Come playing in my headphones. I settled smack dab in the middle of it all. I can see the Hollywood sign from my street and just a few blocks away there are stars with famous peoples names on them in the pavement. Just down the road is Paramount Studios. The weather is an embarrassment of riches 95% of the time, and the other 5%? Well, it’s still just fine. There’s really no two ways about it, California is in fact, beautiful. Everyone was right. Just like Randy Newman sang in his song, I love LA. Naturally I couldn’t wait to get to the beach. After a lifetime of hearing songs, seeing movies and reading books about it I couldn’t wait. I’ll never forget the first thought I had when I walked onto a beach in California.

That thought was; Meh. Yup. Meh. First of all, growing up a car ride to the beach meant passing rows of cornfields and stopping at a local farm to pick up some fresh produce to snack on. Sadly,

most people will never understand how incredible a Jersey tomato is.

The drive to the beach here is also the stuff of legend but unfortunately; Los Angeles Freeways are more of a nightmare than a dream. To top that off hardly any of the beaches here have boardwalks and the water is cold with lots of rocks and seaweed in it.

In Jersey a beach day meant Saltwater Taffy and beautiful Victorian Houses all in a row overlooking sparkling water that I’d spend hours in riding waves while music played in the background (usually Bruce).

Going down the shore (as any true NJ native would call it) was always joyful. A day filled with friends and family. The Jersey Shore has a sense of community that I’ve never seen anywhere else in the world.

Now I’m not going to try to pretend that Cali and its beaches aren’t beautiful, that would be crazy talk but there is a quality that they are lacking, something that only Jersey has. I’d guess it’s like when you meet a pretty girl but, she doesn’t know any of your favorite bands and won’t even try your dessert, it’s just not as much fun to be around. I think maybe it’s because they take it for granted out here, a day at the beach, a beautiful sunset, they have it all the time.

In New Jersey we always knew that we’d be chipping ice off of our cars in no time so these special, sun kissed days were to be savored.

And yes, it never rains in Southern California but all that’s gotten us is a drought.

So, here I am in California, on what seems like the millionth sunny day in a row and my heart would give anything to be sitting on the beach in South Jersey, listening to Jersey Girl because in the end, Springsteen knew what he was talking about.

Moose is a loveable, 113-pound sheepdog that Brigit and her family adopted four years ago--and he’s the main reason why the 18-year-old academic achiever will seek a career as an animal doctor.

“Moose was a rescue dog, and he had problems,” explained Brigit, a June 2016 graduate of Ocean City High School and the latest recipient of a $500 scholarship from the Ocean City Fishing Club (OCFC).

The pooch needed extra care and attention, including medicine for his anxiety. Over the years, Brigit developed a keen interest in such fields as canine neurology and other aspects of animal behavior. As she tells it, the knowledge and experience she gained as a result “have really inspired me to be a veterinarian.”

This August, Brigit will begin a double major in animal sciences and marine sciences at the University of Florida in Gainesville. After graduation she’ll apply for admission to the school’s College of Veterinary Medicine and then begin her residency.

“I have many years of school ahead of me, and the scholarship from the fishing club definitely helps,” she said.

For the past decade, the Ocean

City Fishing Club has provided a scholarship annually to a graduating senior of Ocean City High School.

Selected by the school faculty and administrators, the awardee must seek to continue his or her education in biology, environmental sciences, oceanography, or related fields.

Somers Point Summer Events Music and Family Fun Tuesday, August 2, 5 - 8 p.m. ▶ NATIONAL NIGHT OUT National Night Out’ will be held in Somers Point on Tuesday, August 2 from 5 - 8 p.m. The event, sponsored by the Somers Point Police Department and the Municipal Drug Alliance, will take place on William Morrow Beach on Bay Avenue and will feature a family beach concert with live performances by local rock n’ roll cover band the SSP’s as well as Strange Brew — so bring a chair!

Hometown Hero: Somers Point Police Work for Love, Not Hate

“I

didn’t do it.” That’s what the police hear on a regular basis, but it’s what the Somers Point Police Department does for the community that matters.

Somers Point’s Finest are proud to host local events to support community unity and the needy, including National Night Out this August.

Lieutenant Anthony Disciascio is the cop behind the community service. He has served for more than 23 years, and comes from a long heritage of greatness in the emergency response business.

“My father was a fireman in Ocean City,” said Disciascio. "We learned to serve the public, and to help people as much as possible, and the satisfaction of putting others first.”

He has been married to his wife Lisa for 23 years and is a father to three sons. He is a self-proclaimed die-hard Eagles and Flyers fan, loves music, and is looking forward to his cruise vacation this winter.

A typical day for Disciascio starts in the traffic dispatch unit, to make sure community traffic is running smoothly. During the school year, Disciascio makes frequent visits to the five schools in town, aiming to make a lasting impression on the students.

“I serve as a liaison between the police and the school,” said the Lieutenant.

Disciascio interacts with students, teachers, secretaries, and everyone in between. He advocates for kids and gives positive advice, and solves any problems with security or behavior.

Disciascio is also responsible for programs run out the school, such as Head’s Up, which promotes drug awareness. Chris Herron, professional baseball player, has even come out to support the cause.

The Somers Point Police Department is also advocates for the local hospital, and serve to protect the rights of everyone in their “small town by the sea." Disciascio and other members of the department participated in a holiday coat drive for the needy.

Disciascio says he “puts a face to the uniform” when he steps out into his community. At events like the Jordan Road Family Fun Day, or even just at the grocery store, Disciascio recalls being recognized and thanked by neighbors and civilians.

Nationally, police and civilian relations have been tense in the wake of the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

Despite recent violent protests in urban cities, the Somers Point Police Department chooses to serve and protect, rather than use force.

“There is no color”, said Disciascio. “We don’t individualize. It takes baby steps to trust us, but you can see we are here to protect and serve.”

Around the holiday season, offi cers buy Christmas gifts for needy children, shopping themselves and hand-wrapping the presents.

“Coffee with a Cop” gives people the opportunity to converse about community issues, in a nonviolent and comfortable way. The event was originally held at Dunkin Donuts, but has now spread to Applebee’s, and even McDonald’s. It features live performances by Charter Tech High School students.

National Night Out of 2016 will be held on August 2nd. Somers Point businesses will set up booths to give away free food and information. It will be the second year of free concerts on the beach, and Disciascio is excited to spend time with the community.

“We are here to serve our city," said Disciascio. “We took an oath because everyone matters to us."

August Outlook This Month in Weather History

ello everybody!!! Wow, summer is flying by quick and, within a few weeks, teachers will start preparing for kids to return to school, followed by the Labor Day weekend. First though, lets talk about the month of August.

The average high temperature starts to drop during this month. 84 degrees is

the average at the beginning of August, and it will fall to 81 as we get closer to Labor Day. The average low drops from 65 to 62 from the beginning to the end of the month.

August is traditionally known as a wet month; the second wettest month of the year, as a matter of fact, trailing only May. This is caused by slow-moving thunderstorms, as well asaffects from tropical systems (more on that below).

Daylight also decreases as we lose over a full hour of sun from the beginning to the end of the month.

August is a big month in terms of tropical systems affecting our region. Hurricane Irene made landfall on August 28th 2011 in Little Egg Harbor, located next to Galloway Township. It was later determined that Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm right before landfall. Our area was spared the brunt of the storm because we were on the southern and western side of the system, which is typically the weaker side of the storm. Areas to our north, especially in the northern part of the state received widespread damage caused by flooding and downed power lines.

August has had 31 tropical systems that have affected the area in some way shape or form. That's second only to September. In some years over the last twenty-five years, we have had multiple storms affect our area within a two to three week stretch. In 2004, Charley and Gaston affected our area with heavy rain and damaging winds. Many of you know Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Not many people remember the impacts Katrina had on our area. That storm moved up the Eastern Seaboard and some places in our area received in excess of five inches of rain.

Other notable storms include Hurricane Bob, the remnants of Andrew, which hit our area in 1992, and Hurricane Felix, which spared our area in terms of rain, but caused multiple fatalities due to strong rip currents and high winds.

As you can see, August is a transition month as our area headstoward the unofficial start to autumn. Some very warm temperatures, but also keep alert for approaching tropical systems. Thanks for reading and hope all of you are having a great summer!

eritage Surf Shops and Heart of Surfing came together July 16th to create a wonderful day for families with autism and other special needs. It was smiles all around as volunteers assisted special needs surfers to catch some waves and enjoy the ride.

he City of Somers Point will participate the annual National Night Out with a family beach concert on William Morrow Beach in Somers Point on Tuesday, August 2 from 5-8 p.m. The event, hosted by the Somers Point Police Department and the Municipal Drug Alliance, is free to the public and will feature live music, free refreshments, children’s activities and much more!

The New Jersey Chapter of “The Ghostbusters” will also make an appearance to meet everyone and give out souvenirs.

Local businesses and kids’ organizations will have booths set-up with various activities, giveaways and refreshments and informational handouts.

Representatives from Shore Medical Center and AtlantiCare will provide free health tips and wellness information.

Our local Cub Scout packs will assist with the event by providing games and fun. Other scheduled activities include a helicopter hoist demonstration over the bay by the U.S Coast Guard; a K-9 demonstration by the Somers Point Police Department; and meet and greets with your local police, politicians, fire departments and emergency management representatives. Atlantic County Board of Elections will also be in attendance so that children can get a handson experience and learn how to vote.

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police/community partnerships and friendly neighborhood communications to make our neighborhoods a safer, better place to live. 16th Annual Art of Surfing Festival August 4-6 in Ocean City

ields are plowed; and finally ready for plaThe 16th annual Art of Surfing Festival brings local artists and their surf and beach-related works to New Jersey’s Ocean City Music Pier from Thursday, August 4 through Sunday, August 6.

The event is free and open to the public, kicking off on August 4 from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and returning August 5 and 6 each day from noon to 10:00 p.m.

The festival includes live music each night and a Surf Yoga demonstration on Saturday afternoon starting at 4:15 p.m.

“Sixteen years ago, we held the first festival in our then small gallery, and ever since have seen this event grow in popularity,” said Festival Coordinator Steve Miller. “Now, thousands of people attend in our expanded, climate-controlled location inside the gorgeous, historic Music Pier on Ocean City’s boardwalk. To us, it is an honor to be able to provide festival-goers with unique pieces of art and these artists an opportunity to showcase & sell their beautiful art every year.”

Festival-goers will see a wide array of surf art from veteran and new festival artists alike, including abstract and whimsical paintings, wood carvings, pen drawings, and sea glass jewelry.

The Escape Room Attraction New Entertainment Venue Opens In Linwood

icture this: you find yourself in a mysterious room, surrounded by unusual artifacts, cryptic markings, indecipherable clues, and the sense you’re in a different time and place. A timer on the wall displays a 60-minute countdown. You pause, and look back and forth at your teammates, unsure of which of you will make the first move. A tick of the clock goes by, and you see the clock change to 59:59. The escape room experience has begun, and you spring into action.

People all over the country are experiencing a similar thrill as they discover the rapidly-growing Escape Room phenomenon. Originally established in Asia, then successful in European countries, the team-building entertainment trend has at last become wildly popular in the United States in the last decade. Well over a dozen such venues have opened in New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia in the last few years, each offering its own unique themes and scenarios.

So what’s it all about? There are plenty of buzz words surrounding the escape room experience– team-building, creative problem-solving, puzzles and clues, mystery, interactive entertainment; the list goes on. At its heart, an

escape room is best described as an “interactive team-building entertainment experience”. Participants– joined by a group of friends, family, coworkers, or total strangers– enter a themed scenario and have 60 minutes to escape. While in the room, they can expect to solve riddles, discover clues, and overcome mental challenges, all the time working together to meet certain objectives. The rooms are meticulously designed to fit a theme chosen by the room’s creators; ranging from secret agent missions, theaters, literary adventures, and even mundane spaces like your own office, cleverly crafted with unexpected surprises. For example, you might find a hidden key, which later unlocks a secret compartment in a desk, which reveals a clue that can only be read with a special lens.

That clue could reveals a series of symbols that can be decoded to illuminate a note you’ll find later. The possibilities are varied and limitless.

Ironically, the word “escape” has been known to sometimes misrepresent the central idea of what these rooms are about. While many businesses utilize the idea of actually escaping from the room as the benchmark for victory, the idea is largely symbolic, since safety regulations

generally don’t allow for customers to be locked in. The real heart of the experience is within the room itself, and often culminates when an objectives has been completed, like solving a mystery,recovering a stolen artifact, completing a mission, or collecting a series of special objects. No matter what the goal, it’s a lot of fun, and participants have to keep their wits about them to get through the process within the time limit. Good team-work strategy, creativity, and the ability to think outside of the box are all critical in an escape room experience.

What is the secret to the success of the escape room industry? For one thing, it appeals to a wide audience– customers range from thirty-somethings on date night, teenagers’ birthday parties, families looking for a rainy day outing, bachelor parties, or even coworkers. In fact, many small businesses and corporations are bringing teams of 8 or 10 of their staff members to participate in escape rooms as a team-building exercise.

Such an activity can reveal a lot about the dynamic of a professional team; who steps up and takes a leadership role, who can collaborate well with others, who is able to think outside of the box, and who starts blaming others for mistakes

reschoolers and their parents are invited to a special Open House on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Beth Israel Nursery School, 2501 Shore Road, Northfield, N.J. 08225.

There will be pizza, ice cream, and a chance to tour the nursery school classrooms and learn about Beth Israel’s program, which is open to the community.

New this year is “Beth Israel Babies,” a Mommy & Me program for children under two years old, beginning in the fall. Nursery school is open to children ages 2 to 5, and kindergarten enrichment is available.

The Beth Israel Nursery School Program incorporates art, movement and music, stories, writing and dramatic play, Smart Boards, a playground built on a sandbox and an organic garden that is “farmed” by the children. The “Handwriting Without Tears” program is a cornerstone of literacy development and employs multisensory tools to help students succeed. The children also are taught about Jewish holidays in hands-on activities, that range from making their own challah bread to participating in a weekly Shabbat program with Rabbi David Weis. Small class sizes and personalized

attention are a hallmark of the program.

Both Rabbi Weis and Director of Education Cookie Feldman will be on hand to meet you and answer all questions.

“Importantly, we provide a warm, nurturing environment to encourage children to explore, create and learn,” said Feldman. “We build literacy and mathematics skills at an appropriate developmental level that allows students to celebrate their achievements, rather than be pressured to perform.

Our program provides the scaffolding that will allow these children to excel in kindergarten and beyond.”

Makes 10 popsicles INGREDIENTS • • •

1 cup French roast or chicory coffee grounds, such as Café Du Monde 3 cups water 1 cup sweetened condensed milk

INSTRUCTIONS Stir the coffee grounds and water together in a large jar, then cover and refrigerate for at least 12 hours, or up to 72. Place a fine mesh strainer over a bowl and line it with a coffee filter, cheese cloth or a few layers of paper towels.

Pour the coffee mixture through and allow it to slowly drip. Discard the coffee grounds (compost them!), then mix the liquid with the sweetened condensed milk.

Pour into a popsicle mold, cover, and insert popsicle sticks. Freeze for at least 6 hours to be sure they’re com-

pletely frozen solid (overnight is best).

Run the popsicle mold under hot water for about 30 seconds to loosen the pops, then remove them and serve immediately. Wrap extras tightly and store in the freezer, in a zip-top bag for up to 3 months.

Produce Probiotics: Fun Fermenting Your Veggies

o doubt by now, you’ve been inundated with fine produce from local growers and farm markets (and your intention was to use every last bit of it before it started to become compost), but one can only eat so many zucchini or peppers in a week. Since it would be a shame to let such fabulous food go to waste, consider fermentation as a way to extend that harvest bounty.

Fermentation, at its most basic, is a process where bacteria digest the sugar in food, producing carbon dioxide, probiotics, and preserve the food in the process. Wine, yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi are all examples of fermented foods we see every day, and the fermentation of food has been part of human culture for thousands of years, long before the refrigerator was invented. Fermenting your veggies makes them more digestible, breaks down tough fiber for easier consumption, and

adds valuable vitamins and probiotic bacteria that the human gut needs to fight disease and illness.

Although fermentation might sound like a secret esoteric alchemical process, it’s actually very simple – and for certain vegetables, like cabbage, it’s super-simple. Cabbage naturally has the bacteria needed for fermentation into sauerkraut present in the leaves, so making your own sauerkraut

Wine Review – 2 New Grapes

t’s been awhile since I’ve counted all of them, but last time I checked, there were 10,000 or more grape varietals used to make wine. I’m willing to wager that most wine drinkers haven’t met more than a handful of them.

Don’t they get bored? I don’t know about the rest of you, but I rarely bring home the same bottle of wine more than once in a 6-month period.

Don’t get me wrong. I love the classics.

I love a Chianti when I’m eating pizza or pasta. A big bold and luscious California Cabernet Sauvignon is great with a nice steak. Chardonnay goes great with seafood, and Pinot Grigio… well, let’s just say it goes quickly. When is the last time you met a new wine? “What’s your favorite wine?” So many wonderful choices. How can I pick just one?

One of my two new summer favorites is a terrific Spanish red from Valencia, Spain. Vegalfaro Tinto 2014 is a blend of Garnacha Tintorera, Bobal and Tempranillo. If you’re doing any grilling this summer, Spanish reds are a great choice

as well as a great value. Look for lots of ripe, red, almost jammy fruit, hints of vanilla, toasted hazelnut and soft, earthy spice. This full bodied and organically produced wine seriously over delivers for the price of $9.99.

is almost effortless. Once you have delicious, non-irradiated sauerkraut, you’ll never buy another bag of that gray-tan stuff at the supermarket again. Here’s what to do: 1. Chop your head of cabbage into thin strips, place in a non-reactive bowl, sprinkle with salt (use around half a tablespoon per pound of cabbage – sea salt or non-iodized is best), and mix thoroughly.

2. Cover and let sit for an hour so the salt can draw out the moisture from the cabbage. Massage occasionally.

3. Pack cabbage into a clean, sterile jar, and cover with the remaining cabbage juice. Make sure all your cabbage is below the brine level (this seals out mold and bad bacteria); use an ugly outside cabbage leaf cut to the size of the jar opening as a barrier to hold down the sauerkraut inside, and weigh it down with a sterile weight.

4. Screw the jar lid on gently, then back off a turn to allow the car-

bon dioxide to escape during fermentation (and prevent your jar from exploding).

5. Ignore your sauerkraut in a dark, cool (not cold) place for 1-4 weeks. Open, eat and enjoy after that, and store in the fridge. Your kraut will continue to develop flavor as it ages, which might be as long as 6 months!

Although there are far fancier ways to ferment using airlocks and expensive equipment, these fi ve steps are a great way to get in the trenches and try your hand at crisp, tangy veggies that pack a probiotic punch (for more info and great recipes, read Sandor Katz’s “Wild Fermentation,” or check out fermentation groups on Facebook).

Fermenting your excess produce will extend your harvest season, your dining options, and your palate. Your creativity is the only real limit to the many salsas, condiments, side dishes, and even beverages you can add to your daily fare – all while improving your health as well.

he 107th annual Baby Parade in Ocean City is set for 5 p.m.

Thursday, August 11, and registration is now open.

All families with children age 10 and under are invited to participate. Bands, performing groups, and commercial floats are also encouraged to join in the fun.

Register at the Welcome Center on the Ocean City Music Pier (Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace) any time 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. For the first time, online registration is also available. Create an account on Ocean City’s Community Pass system (at ocnj.us/recreation ) to sign up.

This year’s parade features Kaitlin Becker, a host of the popular “Sunny Side Up” on Sprout, as grand marshal. The parade also will mark the debut of the new Martin Z. Mollusk balloon. Watch as Ocean City’s mascot floats above the boardwalk like an entry in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Details on the events are as follows: REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Registration closes 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 9 ENTRY FEE: $5 per child in Division A, B and C PARADE ROUTE FOR PARTICIPANTS: 6th Street to 12th Street on the Boardwalk. Bands, special guests, cars, dignitaries, etc. will travel to 14th Street.

REVIEWING STAND: At the Music Pier, Moorlyn Terrace WINNERS: Each child receives a memento at 12th Street for participating in the parade. Division winners will receive their award when they complete the parade at 12th Street. You must walk the

entire parade route!

Margate Winners of 26th AC Lifeguard Classic

argate City Beach Patrol takes the 26th Annual Atlantic City Lifeguard Classic on Friday,with the help of veteran rowers Chuck Gowdy and doubles partner Chris Graves. A combination of their efforts won the Marvin Kramer Memorial Doubles Row in convincing fashion at the north end of the beach. Gowdy also came back in the third race of the event and clearly won in the Bloomer Blair Memorial Singles Row. Conditions were not optimal as there were choppy waters and strong

currents, but Graves, 34, touched on his experience, saying, “The conditions have been ugly here all week, and in a choppy ocean, it pays to be a veteran crew.”

Amber Glenn of Margate finished fourth in the Arthur Brown Jr. Memorial Swim, and the tandem of Bob Bechtel and Chris Spiers clinched the title by placing fourth in the inaugural Joe Sykes Memorial Rescue Doubles Race with a total of 14 points.

The scoring system is as follows: first place is awarded five points, second place is awarded four points, three points for third, two points for fourth, and one point for fifth.

Smallwood said, “It is nice to score in every race. It makes it a lot easier.

Chuck and Chris are always so consisitent. Amber did very well, it was a nice team showing.”

Avalon challenged Magate in points through three races, but then fell short to second place, with 10 points, after being shut out in the fourth race. Atlantic City also scored 10 points, but placed in third, due to Avalon placing higher in a doubles race as the tie-breaker.

Atlantic City’s Mike Sykes, 34, the cousin of the late Joe Sykes, and partner Mike Flanagan, took the Joe Sykes rescuedoubles race and gave Atlantic City

10 points.Sykes was happy to win the race that is now named after his cousin, a former Atlantic City lifeguard who was known as a great rescuer. He said, “Joe passed away this winter, and we did it for him. We got out well and got to the flag.

On the way in, we got on a nice wave that Joe put there for us. The race is dedicated to him, and it was a great race to win for a great reason.”

Eagles Training Camp Preview

he 2016 Philadelphia Eagles will see many changes from years past. Gone is Chip Kelly, who was fired after 3 unsuccessful seasons. Doug Pederson, who used to play with the Eagles in 1999, was hired as the new head coach in January. It was also announced that HowieRoseman would take on a bigger role in the front office, handling the general manager duties. He wasted no time in making trades. He dealt over-priced veterans Byron Maxwell and DeMarco Murray.

Kiko Alonso (who was acquired for LeSean McCoy) was also dealt in the Maxwell trade. Additionally, Mark Sanchez was also traded. Wide re-

ceiver Riley Cooper and linebacker DeMecoRyans were released.

The Birds made a solid splash in free agency. They signed safety Rodney McLeod, who is an up-andcoming safety, just 26 years old, with a reputation for making the big hit. Also signing with the Eagles is offensive guard Brandon Brooks. He comes from the Texans and improves the offensive line in a big way. LeodisMcKelvin and Ron Brooks come over from Buffalo to help a secondary that was brutal last season.

Veteran coach Jim Schwartz will lead the defense, bringing his wide nine scheme to Philadelphia. In previous stints as defensive coordinator, his defenses have been traditionally ranked among the top ten in the

league. Frank Reich comes over from San Diego and will be the new offensive coordinator. He worked with Phillip Rivers and has made Keenan Allen a very good receiver. I believe he is a nice fit to this team.

The biggest move of the off-season was a blockbuster trade before the draft with the Cleveland Browns.

The deal landed the Eagles with the second overall pick, to which they chose their future franchise quarterback, Carson Wentz. Wentz has all the tools to be the guy that will lead the Birds to the Super Bowl. The Eagles also re-signed Sam Bradford, and signed free agent Chase Daniel, which means the Birds have a lot of money invested at the quarterback position.

Training Camp will feature some position battles that include corner back, wide receiver, and offensive guard. While Ryan Mathews will be the lead back this season, 5 th round draft pick Wendell Smallwood is ready to step in, if Mathews gets hurt. The Eagles also locked up Lane Johnson and Fletcher Cox to long-term contract extensions.

With no first round draft pick in 2017, this season is shaping up to be an interesting one. Position battles and exhibition games will determine who makes this roster.

I will have a season preview as we get closer to kick-off in early September, but in the mean time, enjoy the pre-season!

A Farmer’s Daughter…

Speedy Weeds

ou know, when you stop to think about it, humans have made tremendous changes to the Plant Kingdom. Mind boggling ones really; astounding and perhaps even a little freaky by some standards.

They say that the ancestor to modern corn actually looked more like today’s wheat than the yummy veggie we slather the butter and salt on today. Crazy, right?

Or how about the rose? Its ancestor looks nothing like the long – stemmed beauties that are found in Valentine bouquets. Yes, humans have definitely modified the heck out of a lot of plants for our benefit. There just ain’t no denying it.

Keeping that in mind, would somebody please, please, tell me why the heck in all the many millennia that we’ve been tinkering with plants and their genes, that we have yet to mess with the genetic make – up of weeds??!

I am so serious. We have made flowers bigger and with more perfume, fruit and vegetables that are not only insect and disease resistant, but that also take

their sweet tushie time in going bad. And still we have yet to make a blooming dent in the fact that weeds grow at least four times as fast as non – weeds.

Let me tell ya folks, I no sooner finish pulling weeds in one row then it seems like I have to start all over and do it again. And again.And then once more with feeling. It truly is insane. What’s that definition of insanity? Doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different outcome each time. Yep. Crazy.

Now, like I’ve said before, I have a small farm. Unlike those big, huge ones that you drive by and the fields just go on and on.

The farms that have machines, people, and nasty chemicals to combat weeds.

And combat weeds they do! Considering I’m doing all of the planting, weeding, and harvesting by hand, it might as well be one of those huge farms ‘cause it sure does feel like it is!

At first, it wasn’t too bad. The weeds easily came out of the ground with almost little to no effort. But then I guess I must’ve blinked or sneezed or something because the next thing I know, BAM!!! I can hardly see the crops for the weeds

that are towering over them! I know one thing, I don’t need to go to the gym because the muscles in my arms are gonna be bigger than Popeye’s come harvest time!

Scientists and mental health expert types say that gardening is fabulous for one’s metal health. Did you know that they say that there are organisms that live in the soil that actually help keep depression at bay? And that by getting our hands dirty by gardening exposes us to them? That’s what they say at least…not quite sure how true or scientifically sound that is. But it is interesting.

I kind of believe it though. Do you know why I believe it? I believe it because when I pull some long rooted, sunlight stealing, water and nutrient guzzling weed out of the ground so my sweet little crop plant can have a chance of growing up to be big and strong and fruitful, I feel good.

But then I feel kinda bad.

See, for the most part, weeds really are nothing more than plants that need a better public relations firm. For example, Purslane. Like the story says that has been making its way around Facebook-land,

purlaneis quite edible and more than a tad healthy for you.

But it’s a weed. A weed that happens to be growing right next to one of my mum plants. Or wild radish. A pretty teeny tiny little flower that produces a tasty nectar that honeybees like. Therefore, as a beekeeper, I want to encourage its growth. Yet as a farmer who happens to have it growing amongst my pumpkins, I wanna rip it out and see it die in the hot sun. It is a weed after all! But honeybees everywhere are kicking the bucket at alarming rates. Anything that will keep them alive and well should - needs - to be done.

Can you feel my pain yet folks? Believe me, the pain is real.

There is a cure however. I can't implement it till late fall, but a cure there is.

After a very long speculation, deliberation, and assimilation, I have accepted the fact that as one person I just cannot maintain the farm as it so stands. Fear not! We both will go on! Except, I will be transforming it into a peach, apple, and hazelnut orchard. With honey on the side.

Gotta keep my bees employed.

PGA Junior Golf League

olf can sometimes be a lonely sport. It’s just you and the golf course, and for kids just beginning to play, it can be extremely lonely and even frustrating. Afterall, it’s a far different game than seen on television, where we witness an intense competition between players who make the incredibly difficult game seem embarrassingly easy.

Now, thanks to an outreach endeavor by The PGA of America, young boys and girls across the country are being introduced to golf as a team sport. The PGA Junior Golf League (JGL) works to create a fun, recreational environment, much like little league baseball, soccer, and an array of other team activities. In just five years since its birth in 2011, the PGA Junior Golf League has blossomed from 170 kids on 16 teams to more than 30,000 participants on 2,500 teams in 48 states in 2015.

A typical junior golf league match would look familiar to many people. In a scene out of 20th Century Americana, kids hop out of their parents’ cars, numerical jerseys on their backs.The kids meet up with their teammates from all different back-

grounds, also donning the same colored jerseys. They warm up together, joking back and forth, checking their phones, and looking forward to the friendly competition that lies ahead.

The major difference in this picture is the setting: It’s not at a baseball or soccer field. It’s at a golf course.

At Northwest Golf Course in Silver Spring, MD, PGA member Martin Zadravec has directed junior golf league teams for the past four years and is a huge fan of the pro-

gram. Under his direction, some 40 kids participated in the program this season.

“The hardest leap in golf (for kids) is from playing with dad or friends to playing in competition. That's where the most negative outcomes are. This is the perfect bridge and it's magic watching them grow in their confidence when they play this format,” he said.

Prior to the birth of this initiative, youngsters hadn’t had the oppor-

tunity to play golf as an organized team sport. The PGA Junior Golf League is supported by some of the world’s best players, including Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler, and Michelle Wie. They are all ambassadors of the program and publicize the league’s mission: Learning the game and playing as a team.

The program focuses on kids 13 and under, while Zadravec and some other pros have also organized 16 and under teams. Play begins in the

As I noted earlier, golf can be a lonely sport. However, in this junior league format, the kids work together in deciding where to hit the ball, reading the break and speed of putts and which shot to play. Prior to this format, kids usually learned the game from a parent, at a clinic or individual lessons. The league style of play now allows kids to go out and play on the course, accompanied by a teammate and incorporates the aspect of team competition.

While many of the youngsters may look up to a Fowler or a Wie, becoming a touring professional is hardly the goal of the program. Like other sports, golf teaches many valu-

late spring and the regular season runs through July. Much like The Little League World Series in baseball, junior golf leagues select all-star teams after the regular season to play against other all star squads.

Sub-regional play runs throughout August, leading to regional play in September and the national championship Nov. 19-21 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ. One 13 year-old participant in the program, under Zadravec’s guidance, said, “I really like the team aspect.

able life lessons. From being on time, to honesty and respect, to solving problems with a partner, kids learn much more than how to hit a ball.

Golf is also a game one can enjoy and play for a lifetime. “The junior league has been a real boost for our son,� said one parent. “He really loves the game, but prior to junior golf, he did not know anyone else at his school who played golf. Now he’s been able to meet tons of other kids his age who also love to play golf. And, as a parent, we’ve also benefitted from meeting other parents who are extremely supportive of all the kids. It’s a winwin all the way around.�

A t ypical match includes two-person teams playing against each other over nine-holes. The duos compete in a scramble format, which is a very fun and popular way of playing golf at all levels. In scramble play, both team members hit a drive off the tee and then decide as a team which ball to use on their next shot. They continue this process until holing out.

Margate Fish ing Repor t

he fun part about writing a fishing report is that there is a story behind every catch. Conditions vary daily; tides, wind, water and air temperature cause species to perform differently as well. Flounder, for example, will eat minnows and “gulp� for a few days in a row, as they have this week, then switch to a preference for silversides (the most abundant bait fish off the coast of New Jersey). We don’t know their feast of choice any given day until anglers get on the water and throw the arsenal at them. Larger flounder have been known to chomp a whole live bunker intended for a striped bass by the angler on the water surface.

They delight in the current schools of “peanut� or small bunker loading the bays behind Absecon Island and Ocean City.

This brings us to the monster flounder weighed in by local Frank Nastasi of EHT.According to the eyewitness report by Christine Sweeney of Northfield, who alsohappened to be the net person, the nine pound beastly flounder took most of Frank'sline, ran, and required a five minute fight to be horsed to

On the other hand, local brothers, Jacob and George Okoorian of EHT and Linwood, caught a total of ten flounder, with four of them large keepers on spearing or silversides.

Cade Rupert of Medford turned fourteen on the 12th. He celebrated by fishing with his Dad on the Margate bay. He caught five total flounder with two of them keepers.
