Tackling 2020

A

new year, a new decade! If you’re like me, you’ve thought a lot about how you plan to tackle the year ahead. Not only that, turning the page to 2020 makes you look at where the next decade will take you as well. Preparation, planning and anticipation for the future is great. But reflection and analysis are as well. As I look at the year ahead, I can’t help but look back at 2019. We’ve all heard that experience is the best teacher. But as my mentor John Maxwell says, “Experience is not the best teacher. EVALUATED experience is the best teacher.” He goes on to say that if experience is the best teacher, everyone who has ever experienced anything would be better off the next time around. But we all know that’s not the case. From time to time, we repeat the past in certain areas of our life.

So my suggestion as you head into this year (if you haven’t done so already) is to set some time aside to do reflecting and evaluating on your past year. It might also be a good idea to take a broader look back on the last decade as well. Write down the high points and the low points.

What went right. What went wrong. Reflect on times when you made decisions that moved your life forward and times when decisions moved you in the opposite direction.

Once you’ve reflected and evaluated on your past,

take the information and use that to help in planning the year ahead. Here are three questions you can ask yourself as you plan. ●● What is your preferred future? ●● What have you learned that you need to continue pursuing? ●● What do you need to cut back on or avoid in the future?

Part of this process for me is also asking myself who I need to spend more time with and who I need to distance myself from. The reason for this is the simple fact that we tend to become who we associate with. There is truth in the Biblical statement that iron sharpens iron.

What do you need to read more of, skills you need to build on, relationships you need to pursue. Asking all of these questions and taking the time to really think through your answers will help you make more engaging, meaningful, and realistic goals to pursue as you take on 2020. But unless you do the work, you can’t expect the desired results. Now go for it!

Plunging into a new year From the Editor

A

long with a thousand others, I braced myself to run into the Atlantic Ocean on New Year's day. The air and the water were both a balmy 43° and similar scenes were simultaneously being played out on several beaches up and down our coast.

It's kind of a local's twist on a toast to the New Year. For many and for myself, it's tradition. I chose Ocean City because I like to challenge myself to run the 5k just prior to taking the plunge.

Shortly before the race, I stepped in a shop on the boardwalk to warm up a bit.

Another customer saw my number bib and asked if I was running. I told her I was and polar plunging as well. She seemed stunned and proceeded to ask me why I would want to do that. A simple enough question, yet one I never really pondered before. I just did it.

I admit I was ill prepared this year. Everything hurt, especially my aging knees as I huffed and puffed my way down the boardwalk. I thought "This is horrible, why am I doing this to myself? Maybe I should turn around halfway. I'm getting too old for

this!" The thoughts ran through my mind just as someone at least ten years my senior passed me, while kindly encouraging me to keep going. There goes that excuse!

I hung in there and crossed the finish line. But please don't ask me my time.

Shortly afterwards, I stood barefoot on the beach. My feet were numb before they even hit the water.

The excitement got me through it.

The atmosphere felt like a party as we all waited for the signal to go. As the masses rushed into the waves, there were plenty of screams, laughs and photos taken. I only went in up to my knees and I kept my hoodie on. I applaud the brave souls in bikinis and creative costumes.

As I shivered and made my way to my car I understood why I did it. It defies logic.

It's both nuts and memorable. But most of all it's just fun and a commitment to start the year off living out loud with an active lifestyle.

Water Dog Smoked Fish and Meats A New Sensational Dining Experience on Absecon Island

bsecon Island offers many options for your “BreLu” breakfast lunch dining and now there is a new dining experience that thinks outside the box or should I say inside the smoker.

Water Dog is a Smoke House featuring their own very creative, small batch, House-Smoked + roasted Fish and meats. For instance check out this menu item, their house smoked pastrami herbed lox, flavorful and delicious.

Water Dog has become the talk of the town. House smoked salmon, scallops, corned beef, pastrami, turkey, Angus beef, ham, mini-meat loaf and of course bacon.

There are many ways to enjoy their smoked meats and fish. For example, “The Betty” Seared is local day boat

scallops piled high in a top cut grilled brioche bun dressed lightly with their tarragon sauce.

Or how about “Dr Dan” Slow cooked pastrami, served warm on rye with house made remoulade, spicy mustard or horseradish sauce and slaw. We can't forget a bacon item, “MVP BLT” house smoked crispy bacon piled high on a toasted brioche with lettuce and tomato with a schmear of mayo.

Or you can put together your own creation. We ordered a breakfast sandwich with corned beef, fried egg and cheese on a french toast bagel and it was sensational! Our other breakfast indulgence was whitefish on a toasted onion bagel with capers, cucumber, thinly sliced onion and tomato and this was outstanding. We also enjoyed a side

of pastrami lox and it did blow me away.

Also featured, Poke Bowls served over brown or white rice or greens with avocado, edamame, corn, cucumber, daikon, seaweed salad, toasted sesame seeds, mango, green onion and crispy onion.

How did the name Water Dog come about? “Our name and logo are our homage to “Betty” – the Portuguese Water Dog who spent 14 joyful years as a companion to one of our founders, Steve Marchel. Welcoming Home our Veterans

G

ood advice always bears repeating: “The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by our nation.” George Washington’s words continue to set a standard for us to follow. I am grateful the Legislature is heeding his advice.

Recently, the Legislature passed two bi-partisan bills I am sponsoring that appropriately show appreciation for the contributions of our veterans by helping them earn their college degrees.

Every time I hear about another veteran committing suicide or losing their home, I feel we should and can do more to help them find stability and purpose in civilian life. Beyond making sure our returning men and women in uniform have access to proper health care, our next task in helping our veterans is ensure they can make a living. Earning a college degree can play a large role in a veteran’s economic well-being.

According to the Department of Defense, two-thirds of the men and women currently serving in the armed forces have only a high school diploma or GED. Further, nearly 40% of those in the military have spouses and children. The odds are a person leaving military service will need a pathway for career that can financially support a family.

Military service instills maturity and focus in young men and women, and for those who choose a civilian career over a military career tend to know what they want to get accomplished when they leave the service. That’s why it makes sense for New Jersey to adopt my bill, the “Combat to College Act.” Under this bill, our public colleges and universities would grant priority course registration to military service members and veterans who live in New Jersey.

The military also places heavy demands on service members. The young men and women defending our country, most of them still in their teens, take on a great deal of responsibility learning technical and complex tasks, from computer programming to foreign languages, in a very challenging environment. The proficiency they earned and mastered in the service of their country merits recognition toward an academic degree.

My second bill, S-1618, recognizes the

value of military experience and training by requiring each public and independent institution of higher education to accept and apply towards an undergraduate or graduate degree program appropriate credit for a student’s military experience.

The institution may award a maximum of 30 credits for military experience towards an undergraduate degree and a maximum of 12 credits towards a graduate degree.

Both of these bills are now on Governor Murphy’s desk waiting for his approval.

Of course, a number of service men and women may choose to pursue a rewarding and promising career to support their families in a trade based on their military training without the need for a degree. But those who wish to enter a profession requiring a college degree, this legislation provides a pathway for them.

Our nation is blessed with young men and women who willingly volunteer to

fight evil in the ongoing war against terrorism. We must always ask ourselves if the care and appreciation of our veterans equals the commitment and sacrifice they have made. Part of our responsibility to measuring up their efforts is for New Jersey to do what it can to make their transition to civilian life as smooth as possible.

It would be a sin to let any veteran in need of mental health counseling, a decent place to live, job training, or education fall through the cracks. By making sure our veterans have a safety net, we are adhering to George Washington’s advice so we have another generation of brave young men and women ready to defend our country.

Chris Brown is a decorated combat veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Storm, while serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. 1Lt. Brown was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman Badge for his service while spearheading the ground offensive into Iraq. In 2008, Chris was activated to war a second time to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served in the NJ General Assembly since 2012 and was elected State Senator in 2018.

irst Night In Ocean City once again proved to be an outstanding success as it has been for the last 27 years with crowds of families and visitors filling the multitude of events.

First Night in Ocean City was modeled after an alcohol-free New Year’s Eve celebration in Boston that marked the nation’s bicentennial in 1976. The first celebration in Ocean City 27 years ago included 25 entertainment acts in five different locations. While other First Night events have faded, Ocean City's has only grown more popular with families making it an annual tradition for a safe New Year's Eve. Today, attendance is capped at 10,000 with admission buttons selling out year after year.

A Life Well Lived ~ Joe Fertsch

J

oseph F. Fertsch, 80, of Ocean City, NJ passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 21, 2019 with his family by his side.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, Joe was a graduate of North Catholic High School and a veteran of the United States Air Force. Joe worked as a pipe fitter for Local Union 420 in Philadelphia for many years before retiring to Ocean City full time in 1995. Prior to that he and his wife, Dolores Fertsch owned a second home in Ocean City that they enjoyed spending weekends and holidays in while raising their family.

Joe loved island living and was very active. He was often seen riding his bike on the Ocean City boardwalk or swimming at the Aquatic Center. He also volunteered for many organizations and special events. Joe was an active member of St. Frances Cabrini

Roman Catholic Church, the American Legion Morvay-Miley Post, The Historical Museum and a member and past president of the Democratic Club, all in Ocean City. He often joked that he preferred to never leave the island.

Joseph was predeceased by his beloved wife Dolores (Nardone) Fertsch, parents Joseph B. and Anne C. Fertsch, and sister Frances. Joe is survived by his sons Joseph T. (Ellen Firth) Fertsch of St. Augustine, FL and Robert (Cindy Christy) Fertsch of Egg Harbor Township, NJ, his grandchildren James, Holly, Sarah, Dominic, and Sophia Fertsch, and his brother Michael Fertsch of California.

Joe also leaves behind his Nardone family, many nieces and nephews and

his dear friends.

"At 6'4 and well over 200lbs.", my Dad was a big man," said his son, Bob Fertsch, publisher of Shore Local Newsmagazine. "As a child, I only saw how big he was physically. But as an adult, I came to appreciate the enormous size of his heart, and his love and commitment to both his family and community. There is no doubt my dad left big shoes to fill."

Hometown Hero: Bob McAllister

obody can do everything for everybody but everybody can do something for somebody," says Bob McAllister, owner of Comfort Now. That is one of Bob's favorite quotes by a former US president and part of his core values.

Bob McAllister, founder and owner of Comfort Now has been giving away a FREE heater to a person or family with the greatest need and most compelling story since starting his business. 2019 was the 5th year of the giveaway. In that time, they have replaced six heaters and repaired seven heaters, all free of charge. Demonstrating his keen sense of humor, Bob refers to the annual giveaway as the "Ugly Heater Contest."

When the nominees started rolling in this year, all 400 of them, it was a hard choice. There were some

truly heartbreaking stories. How could they decide who to help? Without hesitation, Bob McAllister responded, "Why can't we help more than one family this year?"

Comfort Now decided to help two families get heat for the holidays this winter season.

Comfort Now offers this giveaway to residents in their prime service areas of Cape May & Atlantic Counties. The first recipient was a single, 80 year old widow whose husband told her before he passed, not to run the heater because it was unsafe. As a result, she had been using kerosene space heaters for two years. She was nominated by her granddaughter.

Others were nominated by family or friends. Four of the previous recipients were single women and all but our 80 year old widow were raising children, including a single 80 year

old gentleman who was still caring for his 50 year old handicapped son. A committee of the Comfort Now staff picks the winner based on their need. This year was particularly difficult.

"We visited a number of homes to look at the heaters and boiled it down to five finalists. When I visited one of the finalists, Mary Downs of Somers Point on Dec 23rd, I could tell the heater was in decent shape and could be run safely and reliably with some minor repairs and maintenance. We got Mary’s heater in great shape the following week, " said Bob McAllister. "That let us provide a new heater for one of the other entries, Jennifer Brady & her family in Cardiff."

Brady was nominated by her mother. When Comfort Now inspected their heater, it was determined that it was borderline safe and making it through the winter was doubtful. So Bob gave her mother the heads up Christmas Eve morning. Then along with his children, RJ and Casey, Bob arrived at Jennifer’s home and surprised her and her family with the announcement that they would be receiving a brand new heater system- free of charge!

"It gives me a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment to form a company that can make a positive difference in the world," reflects Bob McAllister afterwards.

Is Your Weight Loss Plan Right for You?

ll your resolutions for the New Year could go to pot, if you don’t have the right plan.

It's time to turn over a new leaf and resolve to get your waistline under control -- again. Will it be Keto, intermittent fasting, Atkins, The Mediterranean Diet, Lose 21 pounds in 21 Days, Weight loss clinics, or one of the many other diet options? With so many to choose from, it's not easy to figure out which diet will be the best one that works for you. To help the 65% of adults who are overweight , please allow me to share tips to help you find a weight loss diet that is both healthy and effective.

The best weight loss plan is one you can keep up. The one that will never fail you through what life brings.

It doesn't matter how scientifically sound the program is (and many are not), how fast they work (you may regain as fast as you lost), or even how many people have tried it before. What matters is whether you can do what they say forever -- not whether you should, but whether you can. And of course, not all diet plans and programs are scientifically sound. Just because it is on the book-

shelf, or the name is on a door, it does not mean it is a healthy, well-rounded program. Still, it seems that the diets everyone wants are those promising the quickest, most painless results -- which, unfortunately, are usually not sustainable. Weight that is lost rapidly is usually a mixture of water, muscle, and a little fat instead of mainly fat. What's worse, losing is usually followed by gaining.

Most people go on and off fad diets and fall into the yo-yo syndrome of dropping weight followed by gaining weight. The consequence is, you lower your metabolism and end up at a heavier weight than when you started.

The simple (if boring) truth is that losing weight is a simple formula: Calories in minus calories out equals weight loss, gain, or maintenance. Neither potions, detox rituals, nor supplements can change that formula.

In order to lose weight, you have to eat fewer calories and be more active.

Cleanses, creams and supplements are just gimmicks and not going to help in the long run. Just how do you know if a diet is healthy and sustainable? As a nutritionist I believe a sound weight loss diet plan should: include exercise, allow a variety of foods from all the food groups, be created by a credentialed professional, promote slow and steady weight loss, include portion control, allow snacks between meals, include small portions of your favorite foods and beverages, be based on science, include a maintenance plan and recommend drinking plenty of water.

It's also important to choose a diet plan that won't leave you feeling hungry.

Look for plans that promote foods that are high in water and are fiber-rich, like soups, fruits, and vegetables. These foods fill you up and reduce food cravings to help you stick to your diet plan without feeling deprived. Diets don’t work. The dynamic duo of fiber and water have the ability to fill you up on fewer calories, and when combined with lean protein such as chicken, beans, and fish, can keep cravings at bay and leave you feeling energized for hours.

Ask yourself a few questions, does your plan match your lifestyle ? If the plan encourages six meals daily and you struggle to eat two, chances are you won't last on the diet, no matter how healthy it is. Look for a diet that matches the way you like to eat, and ask yourself, can this diet accommodate my travel or dining-out patterns?Does it have a family-friendly approach that everyone in the household can follow? Does it require special preparation and cooking? Can I stick to the timing and/or recommended number of meals/snacks?

Some plans encourage lots of exercise; others simply get you moving.

If you're a sedentary person, plans that include hours at the gym might sound good -- but, in reality, won't last long.

Select a program that has an exercise component you can do on a regular basis, and advance slowly. Find a plan that encourages physical activity that you enjoy and is doable, whether that's dancing, gardening, walking, or just

Try to keep in mind that one pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, so you need to burn off lots of calories to reduce fat.

Rapid weight loss is usually more fluid loss than fat loss.

The higher weight losses that occur at the beginning of most diets are at least partially water. Weight loss can be particularly dramatic on very lowcarb diets because your body gives up water when it's forced to utilize other fuel sources.

While you may want to lose weight quickly, understand that slow and steady wins the race. Safe and effective weight loss averages 1-2 pounds per week, and the best way to achieve it is by burning about 500 calories per day through diet and exercise.

The best weight loss plan is one that doesn't make you feel like you are on a diet. Going on a "diet" can create an obsession with food, heighten cravings, and lead to frustration and a "throw in the towel" because diets don't work mentality.

Some plans have long lists of "forbidden" foods and little room for indulgences. For some people, being denied certain foods can trigger cravings and binges. But others actually do better if they eliminate the "trigger" foods that touch off eating binges.

If you can't bear to live without a glass of wine with dinner, or an occasional dessert, you'll need to find a plan that allows small portions of these favorites. But if you're the type who can't stop with one glass or a bite or two of dessert, the stricter plans may be exactly what you need. Most people can achieve success with sensible splurging.

If a plan restricts comfort or junk foods, it might very well lead to a belly-busting binge. Make sure the plan has healthy substitutes for crunchy chips cravings as well as choices to satisfy a sugary sweet tooth.

Change is difficult and the more you have to change, the harder it will be.

Look for a plan that slowly changes your eating and exercise habits unless you're ready for a real challenge.

A sensible plan encourages you to evaluate your eating habits and work on a few unhealthy habits, and once you accomplish these changes, pick a few more that you can live with.

Resolving to Eat Healthier in the New Year

anuary 1st is one of my favorite days of the year. There is something so cleansing about starting with a clean slate. Every year I make resolutions, some I stick with and others, not so much. Almost always, some of my resolutions relate to food.

Here are some popular food-related resolutions and helpful tips for sticking with them.

Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. In my cooking classes I always discuss the importance of eating the rainbow to nourish your body with a variety of vitamins and nutrients. The more colorful your plate, the better for you it will most likely be (with the exception of Skittles). Some suggestions for achieving this are to join a CSA (community supported agriculture), try to enter the supermarket by the produce aisle, and to subscribe to a weekly produce delivery service. Most CSA’s start around June but it’s not too early to sign

up (my preferred CSA is B&B Farms). I get a weekly delivery of produce from Misfits Market which I absolutely love.

Not only am I saving produce that would otherwise be wasted, but my refrigerator is always stocked with fresh organic produce.

Plan a weekly menu and stick to it to avoid take-out. I write about this topic all the time because I can’t stress the importance of it enough. I plan my menu and food shop on Sundays and then I’m not only prepared during the week but I know we will eat healthy meals instead of getting something on the go. Some mornings are more hectic than others so if I have a few extra minutes in the morning, I can look at the menu for that night and chop vegetables or get a head

start on preparing dinner.

Brew your own coffee. Did you know that a Salted Caramel Mocha Frappuccino from Starbucks has 440 calories? If you need between 1500-2000 calories a day, that’s about one quarter of your calories! Thanks, but no thanks. I set my coffee maker every night before bed so I wake up to freshly brewed coffee.

Not only will you be saving calories, but you will also be saving money!

Use your gadgets or get rid of them to make space for ones you will use.

Every once in awhile I take stock of the gadgets on my counter and if I don’t use them, I say goodbye to them. My juicer recently met this fate. While I juiced frequently when my kids were young, I just don’t use it much anymore. The most

popular gadgets I use are my Insant Pot, high-speed blender (for making daily smoothie bowls), food processor and stand mixer. If you don’t use it, get rid of it.

Keep your freezer stocked with soups and ready to go meals. On certain nights you just don’t have time to cook but still want something healthy.

Open your freezer and find something healthy in there. The easiest meals to stock your freezer with are hearty soups, homemade veggie burgers and homemade pizza dough. Whenever you are cooking, double the recipe and send half to the freezer.

When it comes to resolutions, it’s best to pick a few that are really important to you rather than trying to do too much. I hope you find some inspiration here to help you implement healthy habits. I know it’s not easy to make time for these things when you are balancing all that we do. Planning in advance will help for sure. Cheers to a healthy new year!

appy New Year! Here’s hoping you’re off to a happy & healthy start to 2020.

I have the happy part down, but I have to admit I’m working on the healthy as I’m still fighting a cold from a recent holiday trip. It was the trip of a lifetime, but it was no fun to have to do it coughing & blowing my nose the entire time.

Since I last wrote, the Eagles made the playoffs & lost to a beatable team.

The Flyers went on their annual West Coast road trip & underperformed. The Sixers lost a few in a row, only to rebound with a win at home, but at what cost?

The Phillies are just over a month & a half from pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training. Finally, the Winter sports season is in full gear for high school sports, and that means plenty of basketball…!

From the entertainment world, I

caught a few feature films while on my Flyers road trip. Also, I’m making sure to DVR and watch “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time” on 6abc this week. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ●● The Eagles beat the Giants in New York 34-17 in Week 17 to win the NFC East and they did it with a bunch of backups. That was most impressive to me as they were already missing three starting wide receivers in DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffrey & Nelson Agholor. Then, they also had to go without Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz & starting right tackle Lane Johnson.

First, because referee Shawn Smith neglected to throw a flag on the field. And then, because after the game, he was quoted as saying that Wentz “was a runner and he did not give himself up. We saw incidental helmet contact, and in our judgment, we didn't rule it a foul." Um…..with all due respect…what the HECK were you looking at…? Even anti-Eagles analysts like Skip Bayless saw it as a dirty hit. Clowney was reportedly laughing on the field about it after the play. As of this writing, there has been no fine levied by the league, which is unacceptable. It completely impacted the outcome of the game, and for a

Kudos to 40-year-old journeyman Josh McCown for trying to rally the team. He just couldn’t get the Birds into the end zone as they had to settle for field goals each trip. Russell Wilson was a killer for Seattle too as he extended plays with his legs and unlike Wentz, went into a baseball slide each time he ran.

So, the season is over for the Eagles and now the questions begin. Tough questions. Left Tackle Jason Peters has said he wants to come back and play again. He turns 38 in a few weeks and the team already drafted his replacement in Andre Dillard. Malcolm Jenkins says he won’t play the final year of his contract for the low salary he’s getting. Zach Ertz played with broken ribs and came back from a lacerated kidney to suit up against the Seahawks. Can you imagine the Birds without Jason Peters, Malcolm Jenkins or Zach Ertz…?

I understand that the Eagles will want to get younger, healthier and more explosive on both offense & defense in 2020. I just hope it doesn’t come at the expense of all THREE of the guys

The Birds lost the heart & soul of the locker room. As for Ertz, I’d hate to see him leave, but Howie Roseman might dangle him to get a top-notch wide receiver back. I can’t speak to the Sixers, but the Flyers just finished a West Coast road trip that was BRUTAL. I know, because my girlfriend’s son Michael & I were there for the first four games of it. We saw losses in San Jose, Los Angeles & Las Vegas. Only an overtime win in Anaheim saved us from going 0-4 in the four games we were in attendance

for…! Sam Carchidi the Flyers beat reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer tweeted out that the “Flyers are now 3-17-4 in the last five holiday road trips”. Awful…!

I do want to write a little bit about seeing the Flyers on the road. San Jose was an interesting town as the downtown area reminded us of Atlantic City in a way. You could see that in the 50’s & 60’s it used to be really booming, but in 2020, it’s trying to rebrand itself. The SAP Center where the Sharks play was a really nice building to see a hockey game in, even though the Flyers got blown out 6-1.

Anaheim the next night was interesting as the arena is owned & run by the Ducks. It was originally owned & operated by Disney, and from the granite floors, to the immaculate bathrooms, you could tell the Disney influence still exists. It’s an older building (built in 1993), but the staff was super friendly and again, that was the ONE win that we saw.

I didn’t like Los Angeles and the STAPLES Center one bit. I found the $18 cheeseburger I had for lunch to be too expensive and the arena really pushed my buttons when I couldn’t get a STRAW with my soda. I understand that we are all environmentally friendly now, but at least give me a paper straw instead of a plastic one…!

Throw in the fact that the Kings fans were overjoyed to jump out to a 4-zip lead after one period and it was a rough night. Oh, and we rang in the New Year in Venice Beach. Want to see all walks of people? Ring in the New Year in Venice Beach…!!!

Our final stop was in Sin City as the Flyers played at Las Vegas on January 2nd. Everyone told me to make sure to be in my seat before pregame and they were right. For a town that puts on shows every night at all the properties, the Golden Knights presentation on the ice was both entertaining and amusing. We were heading up the escalators to our second-level seats and were stopped by the team drumline & cheerleaders. First time in all my years of watching hockey I’ve ever seen that..! The game had it all as the Flyers had a penalty shot (unsuccessful), rallied to get close, but lost 5-4.

Because of their road trip woes, as I write this, the Flyers are teetering on the edge of a playoff spot. Let’s hope that home cooking and a stretch of home games coming up is just what they need. As of this writing, they’re 13-2-4 at home and just 9-13-2 on the road. Quite a difference.

Meanwhile, the Sixers also had to leave the Wells Fargo Center to make room for Disney on Ice, and their four-game road trip produced four L’s. Back to back one-point losses in Orlando and Miami are bad enough, but the team also got roughed up at Indiana and then at Houston. They returned home to beat Oklahoma City 120-113 on Monday night, but at what cost?

Center Joel Embiid’s finger was dislocated and he was forced to finish the game essentially playing with one hand. The stats for the Sixers when they don’t have Embiid are pretty clear.

Let’s hope this latest setback isn’t a problem for the rest of the season.

Congrats to reserve point guard Trey Burke as his contract is now guaranteed and he stands to earn the full $2 million because he’s still on the roster past the deadline for the waive him or guarantee his deal. Burke’s father might have made headlines with an inopportune tweet, but Burke has won Brett Brown’s confidence by playing steady at the point when given the opportunity.

We’ll slip in some Phillies news as the team finalized the coaching staff for next season with Bobby Meachem hired as a coaching assistant and Greg Brodzinski added as a bullpen catcher and catching coach. I have no idea if these guys will make a difference or not, but I am still very high on Joe Girardi, so if these are the guys he wants, they’re okay with me.

The Phillies also signed infielder Ronald Torreyes to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training. The 5-8, 150 pound infielder played for Girardi & the Yankees in 2016 and was a key contributor off the bench. Major League rosters expand next season to 26, so count Torreyes as someone the Phillies could keep to use in a utility role of the bench. Of course, I’m still hoping Lower Cape May alum & Villanova alum Matt Szczur gets one of those extra two spots as well…!!!

Congrats to Mainland’s Kylee Watson who broke the program scoring record in a loss to Cherokee at the Seagull Classic over the holiday break.

The 6-foot-5 senior and Oregon recruit passes 1987 Mainland graduate Angie Evans for tops in Mainland girls history. She now has her sights set on the overall scoring record, set

by Skip Castaldi, a 1965 grad, with 1,752 points. Watson is just about 100 points away, so it seems pretty

evident that she’ll end her high school career as the overall points leader for Mainland basketball…boys or girls…! Way to Go Kylee…it’s been a pleasure to watch you mature the past four years. I’d say grow and mature, but you were already above sixfeet when I first met you…!

Kudos to the folks who have brought back the Seagull Classic at Holy Spirit High School. That event, and the big Boardwalk Basketball Classic in the Wildwoods are just two of the outstanding basketball tournaments that take place each year around the holidays. I’m all for high school sports, and if you’re reading this, get out to a basketball game some night soon…!!!

Which leads me to reminding you that there’s also great wrestling, swimming and indoor track in the Winter Sports season too. I think there’s nothing better than the individual battles that take place on a wrestling mat. The long hours that a swimmer puts into their craft, or the dedication it takes to run inside gyms & armories when the weather outside is freezing.

I’ll close with a few items from the entertainment world as I saw not one, but TWO movies on our Flyers road trip. We caught “Knives Out” on an off-night in Anaheim.

I thought I might like it from the previews, but Michael REALLY liked it as it was a classic whodunit with some great acting from folks like Daniel Craig, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Christopher Plummer and more.

Well worth your money. On our last day in Vegas, we watched “Richard Jewell” which was all about the man who was called a hero, then a madman when the bombing happened at Centennial Park during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the movie isn’t a documentary for sure, but is compelling as he draws out great performances from folks like Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm & Oliva Wilde. I think Eastwood as a director might be even better than Eastwood the actor…! I never feel cheated or like I want my $$ back when I see one of his films.

Finally, if you know me, you’ll know that I am for SURE setting the DVR for “Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time” ●●

James Holzhauer was most recently in the headlines, but don’t count out Brad Rutter or Ken Jennings. I also think they’ll crank up the clue difficulty, so I look forward to watching (and playing along) with three of the greatest to see who will win the title as the GOAT. Packed her bags and got on her flight. I know I am partially responsible because to drove her to the airport. I supported her position and even encouraged her to leave.

Actually, she left with her brother and nephew to visit her parents in Florida for a few days. The last time she went away, it was with her ya ya sisterhood. The day after she left, I was layed off from my job. Don’t cry for me, Argentina; it was a blessing.

I didn’t tell her about until she came back, though. To not spoil her little vacation, I just kept complaining all week about the job when she called.

At least I don’t have to concern myself with that now. So, I am home alone. A couple friends have rung in asking when does the partying start but I resist in engaging since putting half of my rather meager net worth in jeopardy would not be wise.

Her absence does present a bit of a dilemma. Since my wife retired in July, we have spent practically every moment together including a ten week cross country trip. Now, I must think about how to fill my time until she gets back but it does get tricky. I briefly thought I would go out and see a movie but then I know she would have wanted to see it with me. We have been binge watching a couple of series together; Ray Donovan and Billions on Showtime. I can’t watch them until she gets back. Books a Million bookstore has always been a comfortable place to widdle away the time but we like to go together and share a coffee and baked goodie.

I do have some work to do for this magazine and always have my stock

photography to work on. That is always an option. If it’s not to terribly windy, perhaps I can play nine holes of golf. The golf ball seems to travel quite nicely on a frozen fairway giving me some additional yardage and my wife doesn’t care much for the cold.

Our kitchen sink has had a slight leak and I promised I would fix it “after the holidays.” Before she left, my wife reminded me it was now “after the holidays.” Of course, it may take me a few days to trouble shoot the problem and I might need an extra set of hands to finish the job. I guess the kitchen sink will have to wait.

“You need to make some friends,” my wife would occasionally say to me. “Socializing is important as we age,” she would tell me. That’s a depressing reminder of the passing of time. My oldest friend passed away a few years ago, one friend lives in Arizona and I will probably see my other friend at some point but frank-

ly, I don’t want to put in the time necessary to cultivate a new friendship.

It’s too much like dating without the benefits.

There is always the gym. This was going to be “The Year.” The year I get it good enough shape to get back into my rowing shell. It’s been a three year hiatus initially brought on by a health issue but there is no sense putting it off any longer. I had purchased a newer racing shell and so far, it has only been rowed by my son so it’s back to the rowing machine and weights. Sorry, son.Another option is the pottery class I told myself I was going to start but never did.

That will take care of one morning.

In conclusion, there are a myriad of activities with which I can occupy myself over the next few days without compromising the activities we enjoy together. Throw in a little reading, the occasional nap and my wife will be home before I know it.

Then I will have to put the toilet seat down again.

Vigil for Elephants Raises Awareness of Animal Welfare

n Saturday, January 4th, a group of nearly a dozen people gathered outside of Ventura’s Greenhouse in Margate to remember and honor elephants that died while in captivity last year. Those in attendance held candles, shared stories The vigil was held by Free All Captive Elephants (FACE), a nonprofit organization whose vision is to ensure that all elephants living in captivity are brought to animal sanctuaries to live out the rest of their lives. The organization was formed in 2014 in an effort to help an abused circus elephant named Nosey.

In 2018, Nosey’s Law was introduced into the New Jersey State Senate, with the goal of restricting the use of exotic and wild animals in traveling animal acts, such as zoos and carnivals, within the state. The bill was officially passed and signed

into law on December 14, 2018. Last year, Congress introduced a bill named TEAPSPA (Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act), that would restrict the use of wild animals in circuses and other traveling performances across the country.

According to the FACE website, there are approximately 400 elephants throughout North America and most do not get the proper treatment and care they deserve.

There are many organizations now aware of the importance of protecting endangered species, long used for the purpose of fashion or entertainment.

There are currently two accredited animal sanctuaries that tend and care for exotic elephants in the United States.

One of which is the California based Performing Animal Welfare Society, which is also home to over forty exotic cats including tigers, lions, leopards and cougars, as well as several bears and primates. Views from the Shore: Stopping Diabetes Before It Starts

few months ago I shared with you an experience I had on vacation when my type 1 diabetic brother’s blood sugar dropped dangerously low, almost requiring a trip to the hospital. It was scary, but it awakened me to the seriousness of the disease.

Type 1 diabetes is not preventable, but people at risk for type 2 diabetes may be able to stave off the disease through lifestyle changes, and that’s where Shore Physicians Group’s new CDC Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) comes in. It’s a year-long series of classes for people with pre-diabetes to help them incorporate sustainable lifestyle changes that can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes.

New DPP groups are forming now, so if you’re pre-diabetic, I hope you will consider signing up. I wanted to tell you more about the program, but the best testimonials come from the participants themselves.

I happen to have one of them working in our marketing department, Beth Ann Spiegel, who was eager to share her experience with you: I knew I was at risk for developing diabetes because it runs in my family. I also had gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies, which alone makes me 50% more likely to develop type 2. I’m a busy mom who works full-time pretty far from home, so it’s a struggle to find the time and energy to make those lifestyle changes I know I need to make, like regular exercise and eating a balanced diet. When I heard about the Diabetes Prevention Program, it felt like exactly what I

needed.

Our program is run by Doreen Fitzpatrick, APN, who went through extensive CDC training to become a facilitator and is a diabetes expert in her own right.

She is kind and compassionate, makes the class fun, and inspires us to keep going.

The goal for participants is to lose 5 to 7% of our body weight by the end of the first six months. At the end of the second six months, we have to have maintained that weight loss. We learn the importance of logging our activity and food, portion control, how to read nutrition labels, and so much more. But the best part for me is the accountability and camaraderie.

Sustainable lifestyle changes don’t happen overnight or with fad diets.

We all lead busy lives or run into road blocks, and this program gives you a safe place to discuss those road blocks

and find solutions. I’m not where I want to be yet, but I can tell that my mindset is changing. For example, instead of spending my lunch break sitting with colleagues in the cafeteria every day, I go for a long walk instead whenever possible so I make sure I get 150 minutes of activity each week, which for me makes a huge difference.

new year marks the commencement of “Fresh starts” and “New beginnings.“ So many of us resolve to do or not to do something.

While, I don’t generally like to speak in negative terms, the failure rate for these resolutions is approximately eighty percent by mid February. How can one avoid the failed, February fizzle? Two words....start small!

Most people set unrealistic goals and have grand expectations within a small time frame. This is too much to tackle, ultimately leading to failure.

Many will be hitting the gym, meal planning, meal prepping, carrying that gallon jug of water, depriving themselves of foods they love and then getting so overwhelmed by it all, QUIT! I have been guilty of this. It has brought me to the conclusion that bigger goals need to be broken into smaller goals by creating small daily habits that will lead us to victories.

Making one change at a time in your daily routine, is crucial.

This is tough for us as a society because we want instant gratification. However, quick fixes don’t work for the long haul. But small positive changes snowball into more small positive changes.

Real change takes time, effort, and patience.

If the big goal is to lose weight, break it down and not necessarily in this order. Start by drinking 16oz of water every morning when you wake, or setting out Sundays for meal plan-

ning and prepping for the week. Another positive step could be setting a reminder to go to bed at the same time each night and getting the recommended eight hours of sleep or planning 20 minutes a day of cardiovascular exercise, three to five times per week. In no time, you’ll be increasing the duration of your workouts or water intake.

A new habit can take 60-90 days to master. Writing in a journal also promotes success and keeps you

accountable. I find tracking my food, water and exercise are critical to my success. There are so many wonderful apps out there these days or simply use a pencil and paper. Lastly but not least, celebrate even the smallest positive change and you’ll be victorious.

The Light’s Annual 2020 Martin Luther King Celebration Friday January 17th at 6pm. The Labelle Art Gallery 300 White Horse Rd, Voorhees, NJ Each year we (The Light) sponsors a celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year we are organizing our event at the beautiful new Labelle Art Gallery. The evening will include spirituals from April Williams, positive Hip Hop by Love Me No More, spoken word from Serena Joy, Nettie Long and more. We will also be taping The Light at the gallery as guest speakers discuss how Dr. King still impacts their life. Admission is free and all are welcome.
