The Best Gift Is Being Present From the Editor

W

ho remembers Y2K and "partying like it's 1999?" Fast forward 20 years and here we are on the verge of 2020! There is something about entering a new decade that seems grander and more exciting than other New Year's celebrations. When our children were born in the mid 90s, I remember doing the math. What year would it be when they were our age and what would life be like by then? The year 2020 seemed unimaginably far off. I envisioned a world akin to the Jetson's futuristic cartoon I grew up watching on television. By now, I expected flying cars and robots that cook and clean my home. But I guess my robotic vacuum is a nice start! The one thing I never anticipated was the "do it all" cell phones. My phone has now replaced my camera, camcorder, computer, calculator, map, calendar, CD player, radio and more. Sometimes I wonder what Al-

exander Graham Bell would say if he could see today's cell phones! It has become the remote control to my life and I can't imagine being without it, even for a minute. Social media has rocked our world greatly in the last decade as well and is yet another primary thing we use our cell phones for. As much as I like catching up with friends and family and sharing photos, the social media world comes with a new kind of pressure. Now we have to keep up with the virtual Jones's, post perfect pics and check in at all the coolest places. With social media comes a lot of noise, rhetoric, half truths and intense opinions. In 2020 I hope to separate the truths from the rhetoric, the friends from the haters and remember it is simply a highlight reel, not real life. One of the most important goals I have for 2020 is to recognize and live in alignment with my core values. For me that means being present more and on my phone less. I cringe as I write this because I know it will not be easy for me, as I am so accustomed to checking every ding or ring and notification. I'm recommitting to take more pictures in my mind and less on my phone, engage in more

Chefs on a Mission serve up holiday meals and more to those in need

T

he Atlantic City Convention Center kitchen was bustling on Wednesday, December 18th. Volunteer professional chefs, along with volunteers from Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Trinity Seafood, Restellie Meats, and Pork Island Barbecue gathered to slice and saute 2000 pounds of tuna, all in preparation for holiday dinners to be served to those in need.

Many of Atlantic City’s finest Chefs came together to use their skills for good and to give back to their community. Chef Michael D’Angelo and Chef George Fisher, along with about a dozen other volunteer chefs sliced, sauteed, stirred, grilled and baked in preparation for the holiday meal being offered. “Being able to prepare the food here, with the large equipment, is a huge help,” says Chef Michael D’Angelo. “We really appreciate the Conven-

tion Center and CDRA allowing us to use this.” Together they prepared 80 pans of grilled tuna,10 gallons of Mango Salsa, 76 hotel pans of sliced smoked ham, 20 gallons of pineapple glaze, 80 gallons of chicken pot pie, 40 hotel pans of mashed potatoes, 60 pans of stuffing, 30 pans of rice pilaf, 250 lbs of green beans,100 dozen dinner rolls, 1500 pieces of cake. Chefs on a Mission is a very dedicated group of chefs that make it their mission to give back to the community. Once again this year, they secured donations and prepared 1,850 holiday meals to be served both at the Salvation Army's Christmas dinner on Monday, December 23rd and at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission on Christmas day. "Everyone does a little and it ends up a lot," shares Chef Bob Harre. Their quest began five years ago when Chef Bob Harre and Chef Wolfgang Geckler started a heart healthy soup program at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. Their goal was to ensure that the homeless clients at the Mission had

heart healthy food available to them at least three times a week. Since then, their "Souper Chef" program has served over 75,000 bowls of heart healthy soup. They have also created a cookbook which is a collection of 40 of the best soup recipes from the professional chef volunteers. 100% of the proceeds from the cookbook go to the Atlantic City Rescue Mission. The volunteer chefs will continue to prepare soup every week at the Atlantic City Rescue Mission in 2020, now aiming to serve up a total of 100,000 bowls of heart healthy soup to those in need. Holding on to the Spirit of Christmas

T

his time of year brings a range of emotions, both highs and lows. For some, the “most wonderful time of the year” is filled with the pain of loss and sadness. I have been hearing people say they just don’t feel like putting up a tree or decorations this year. My family has suffered tremendous loss this year. And yet, for the sake of the children, and the hope of getting through it ourselves, the tree went up and the decorations were hung just like normal even though life is anything but...normal. As we face the broken pieces of shattered dreams, we have a choice to throw in the towel or carry on. Sometimes, as we force ourselves to move forward, we are only going through the motions. But I find that the very act of making the start can motivate--just like forcing ourselves out of bed in the morning and taking that first step can lead to another.

You may not feel like trimming a tree, or hanging lights but the process itself and the result can reward you with a little happiness in the days that follow. For me, those steps forward aren’t always taken alone. My friendships have proven themselves as invaluable. The more you talk to people, you realize most are carrying a heavy load too. Sharing the laughter and the tears with others lightens the burdens of both. Take time to listen and surround yourselves with those that care for you as well. Allow yourself a break from your worries. This time of year, the simple act of listening to some holiday music or hanging a string of lights can be a distraction that causes us to forget our troubles, even if it’s only for a fleeting moment. This week, I had to run an errand in the blustery cold evening. The radio happened to be tuned to the holiday music station. Suddenly, an unexpected flurry of snow started to fall and I found myself in a real life snow globe. As I drove along the streets, I could see houses lit with their version of holiday spirit. For a second, I felt a little lift in my spirits and even caught myself humming

along to the music, while enjoying the decorated houses and Christmas lights. We all need those moments to escape from our troubles. May I suggest that you make that start. Turn off the depressing news, turn on some music, string the lights, hang the wreath, and put up the tree, even if you aren’t feeling very festive at first. We might cry to the music but still see the lights glisten through our tears. For me, Christmas isn’t about the tree, music, or lights, but a Savior that gave us Hope. But remembering that motivates me to make the start. So light the candles, surround yourself with family and friends, and spread the Spirit of Christmas to others who need it most. The program will consist of vocals and instrumentals. During parts of the performance, the group will encourage audience participation.

ST. PETER’S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH SANCTUARY

THE CAPE SHORE CHORALE – Founded in 2005, the Chorale has approximately 50 dedicated volunteer singers from Atlantic and Cape May counties. Their repertoire includes both secular and sacred music. In addition to annual winter and spring performances, the Chorale has performed with the Ocean City Pops Orchestra, at First Night Events in Ocean City and in many other local venues. Since its inception, the Cape Shore Chorale has been under the direction of Scott J. Breiner, one of the most respected musicians in South Jersey. The Chorale rehearses regularly at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Ocean City. Their First Night presentation is entitled “American Classics: Cole Porter/ Gershwin/Hoagy Carmichael.”

The all-male a cappella ensemble is in its fifth year and has performed and competed in various events across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including many events here in Ocean City. The TestosterTone's repertoire features strictly a cappella music with an emphasis on contemporary music. QUIZZO LIVE TEAM TRIVIA – Quizzo is a 7-round, 70-question trivia contest between teams. The game rounds include General Knowledge, Celebrity Picture Identification, Sports, Geography/ History, Entertainment and a Bonus round. Teams can guess (they don’t lose points) and they can choose to double the point value in a single round by using the “Joker.” Spelling does not count and the only rules are no cheating (using phones etc) and never call out the answer.

OCEAN CITY LIFE SAVING STATION – First Night attendees will get an opportunity to visit the newly restored U.S. Life Saving Station 30 at the intersection of Fourth Street and Atlantic Avenue. The station operated in Ocean City from 1885 to 1915 as part of the U.S. Life Saving Service, a precursor to the modern Coast Guard. Lifesaving stations up and down the U.S. coast were positioned not only to rescue ships and sailors in distress but to serve as places of shelter and medical clinics on shorelines that were often sparsely inhabited and remote. They were staffed with men whose motto was, “You have to go out, but you don't have to come back.” The Ocean City station will become a living history museum that will give visitors a glimpse of what life was like there in 1905.

Christmas is such a jolly holiday. I love all the holidays but there is one of a kind that’s called Christmas. I’ll tell you all the things you can do like decorating the tree. I love caroling with my family. Some songs I love are jingle bell rock and Run Run Rudolph. Have you ever heard of a name like Santa Claus or Saint Nick even Chris Cringle? Well, let me describe him. He’s an old jolly man who delivers toys all over the world. He looks like this: a round cherry nose, his cheeks look like red sugar palms. He has a big pot belly. That’s what Christmas is all about. o you’re telling me there’s a CHANCE…!!! – Lloyd Christmas (Jim Carrey) in the 1995 movie “Dumb & Dumber” That’s probably how Eagles fans felt after the Birds rallied again to beat an NFC East opponent last week as they took down the Washington Redskins 37-27. This sets up a classic home game with the Dallas Cowboys where if the Eagles win, they get into the playoffs and win the division. If they lose, they can still win the division, but it’s complicated. I’ll use the old Al Davis quote here…”Just Win Baby…!” Elsewhere, the Sixers continue to stay unbeaten at home. The Flyers had a rough road trip as the injuries continue to mount. Plus, they get devastating news about one of their teammates. The Phillies officially introduce their two new faces, and high

school sports takes a kind of “one week” hiatus as Winter sports begin. From the entertainment world, I caught a few films on TV from the late 60’s that I had never fully seen. Also, “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is set to come out in theaters in time for the holidays. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ●● The Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive with a 37-27 win over Washington, but once again let an inferior team hang in there and almost win the game. After the defense appeared to have “course corrected” even in losses to the Patriots & Seattle, they now appear lost at times, especially in the secondary. Jim Schwartz doesn’t like to blitz, but rather rely on pressure from his front four, and that pressure has been mostly nonexistent this season. ●● Carson Wentz had some more late game heroics for the ages. In his last two games he’s been “Carson in the Clutch” as he’s gone 28 for 35 with an 80% completion percentage & 284 yards during the 4th quarter or OT. He has 4 TD’s to zero INT’s, and an eye popping QB rating of 138.6. I love to see

Wentz step it up. I’d just like to see him play well in the other three quarters too…! . One last tidbit on #11 (Wentz), as the 15-yard touchdown pass he threw to Miles Sanders in the 3rd quarter was a thing of beauty. It was one of those throws that a Dan Marino, John Elway or Brett Favre would make…but Carson Wentz…??? Folks who doubt his ability to be something special simply need to look at that replay again. Pay close attention to the fact that there are FOUR bodies between Wentz & Sanders and the Eagles QB somehow zipped the ball past three Redskins and another Eagle to a tight spot in the back corner of the end zone for Sanders. At the time, I was

stunned it was a touchdown watching it live, but as I’ve seen the replay more since the game ended, I’m even more impressed by that throw. One more item from football, since I brought up Al Davis. The Raiders lost their final game ever in the “Black Hole” in Oakland. They led the Jaguars late, but Jacksonville won it 20-16. Now it’s on to Las Vegas for the Silver & Black, one of football’s most iconic franchises. I’m sorry to see them leave their core fan base, although all their jumps from Oakland to Los Angeles, back to Oakland I thought hurt their fan base already. I’ll be curious to see how they draw in Vegas. Will they be like the Golden Knights in hockey? Or will they be a place like Fed Ex Field, the Redskins home, where the opposing fans make it feel like a home game for the VISITNG team…? In basketball, the Sixers are in good shape as they have 20 wins before Christmas and sit atop the Atlantic Division. They posted big wins over Denver & at Boston last week, but a troubling trend has emerged. How do the Sixers

win without Joel Embiid‌? He was missing from the Brooklyn game the other night because of an illness and the Sixers scored a season low 89 points in a 20 point loss to the Nets. I know Embiid plans to be there for the playoffs, but can you imagine where the Sixers would be if he can’t go for a game‌? The Sixers had another embarrassing case of social media hurting them temporarily the other day. Reserve point guard Trey Burke’s father Alfonso Clarke Burke II, better known as Benjie Burke, stated on Instagram a desire to have his son traded due to lack of playing time. An Instagram account that is identified as belonging to Sixers reserve center Kyle O’Quinn was among the hundreds of likes the message received before the post was deleted. The post read: “Man get my dude off this team. Killing him. They will not get out the east without bench scoring. Free TB23 please.â€? The team provided the following statement on behalf of Burke. “Earlier today, I was made aware of my dad’s social media post,â€? the statement read.

“While I appreciate the support he’s shown throughout my career, his comments don’t reflect how I feel and we’ve addressed that. My focus is doing whatever I can to help this team win a championship. Now to the Flyers as the team was rocked with the news that 23-yearold winger Oskar Lindblom has a rare form of bone cancer and will miss the rest of the season. While the team was in Denver, the Flyers announced that Lindblom has been diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma and will be treated immediately. Lindblom did drop by the locker room this week prior to their morning skate on the day of the Anaheim game. He was smiling and joking with his teammates and the Flyers went out and won 4-1 that night as every fan in attendance had an “OSKAR strongâ€? sign in their seat to hold up in

support of him. Here’s hoping the young man is able to recover as this certainly reminds us there’s more to life than goals and assists…! The Flyers got Travis Konecny back from injury in the 4-1 win over the Ducks too. He missed three games with a concussion and it’s no coincidence that the Flyers lost all three of them. Konecny is the team’s leading scorer and has proven to be the fuel for the engine that makes the Flyers go. Here’s hoping he can stay healthy and other teams don’t take shots at him like Ottawa did. One more hockey item as congrats to left winger David Kase for tallying his first career NHL goal. A rookie, playing in his fourth NHL game, scored his first goal against the Ducks and it proved to be the game-winner as the Flyers are now 11-2-4 at home. I see the Flyers as a playoff team if they can stay healthy…that’s a big IF…!!! The Phillies formally introduced new pitcher Zack Wheeler and shortstop Didi Gregorious to the media at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies are hoping that Wheeler can reach another level like Gerrit Cole did last season. We’ll see if he throws more fastballs and

fewer sinkers when he throws inside the tight confines of Citizens Bank Park though. CBP has been a hitter friendly park ever since it first opened in 2004. Pitchers are reluctant to bring heat because those pitches often end up in the upper deck…! That said, Wheeler has played there with the Mets, and I think he’ll be a GREAT addition to the Phillies rotation. As for Gregorious, I’ve had a few Yankee fans reach out to me and tell me that Philly will LOVE this guy. If he can get past the elbow issues that sidelined him, I think he’ll be a fan favorite as well. Plus, he gets to reunite with a skipper he loves in Joe Girardi. Pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater, Florida on February 11th I’ll close with a few items from the entertainment world as I caught “From Russia With Love” on cable the other night. The second installment of the James Bond movies that featured Sean Connery, I wasn’t born yet when it came out in 1967. Many people, myself included, think of Connery as the best Bond ever, and this movie shows why. Plus, I kept the channel tuned for the next movie, which was “Goldfinger” and is there a better opening Bond song than that one?

My girlfriend’s son Michael loves the movie “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”, so he DVR’d that the other night. I hadn’t watched the entire movie in a long time, but I sure did now that Sergio Leone sets up that final gunfight scene in epic fashion. In fact, they still use that final scene in the graveyard to show film classes how to sequence shots and build drama using a series of wide, medium, tight and extreme closeup shots. Plus the music there is iconic as well. Finally, count me as someone who will buy a ticket at the Tilton Square Theater to watch “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” in IMAX. I was just six-years-old when the original movie came out in theaters with Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford and more. The toy company Kenner made the action figures, and I certainly had a bunch of them growing up.

(I should’ve saved them in their original boxes!) All the advance hype says this ends the Skywalker storyline in a perfect way, so I’m looking forward to seeing that as soon as possible. South Jersey baseball community rallies around Mullica Twp. family who lost house in fire

he South Jersey baseball community is known for being tight-knit and when a family faces adversity, players, coaches and teams typically respond in a big way. A little more than a month ago, South Jersey Sand Sharks 12-year-old catcher Evan Titherington was much like any boy his age, excited about the upcoming holidays and hoping, maybe, there might be a brand new catcher's mitt under the Christmas tree this year. But visions of sugar plums dancing in his head were dashed in the span of just 12 minutes in the early morning hours on a cold November day, when

the Titherington family home burned, nearly to the ground. Jerry Titherington, Evan's dad and a captain in the Elwood Volunteer Fire Company in Mullica Township, had a plan in place should anything ever occur, and he said his 12-year-old son calmly called 9-1-1 from outside the house just before 4 a.m. on Nov. 11 while the rest of the family rounded up the dog and searched for keys to move vehicles out of the Evan Titherington, 12, of the South Jersey Sand Sharks way from a fire that began in the garage but quickly overcame phone with 9-1-1, just as calm as could most of the house. be. "His aunt, Michelle, and I graduated from Absegami together in 1990, and after the fire she called me and asked if I knew where they could go out and try to find some catcher's equipment for Evan. I gave her a list of places and as we talked, I thought, 'wait a minute — I think I know a few people in this business, so let me make a few phone calls,'" McColl said. "I immediately called The Catching Guy, Todd Coburn. He runs a catching academy out of Reno, Nev., but he runs camps all over the country. They've been to Absegami and Linwood to run regional camps and plan on coming back this summer. Todd and I used to run camps for a living from 2000 to 2008. I got out of the business but Todd stayed in it and focused on catching. Todd immediately said, 'let me see what I can do.' So he called Stan, his rep from All-Star Sporting Goods, and within a week I had equipment mailed to my house. All-Star was unbelievable in saying yes immediately and getting stuff to my house. "Johnny Jr. at Second To None helped us get a nice, new Rawlings catcher's mitt and I asked if it would

Brian Kowalski, owner of Kowalski Tire in Egg Harbor City, has offered up a house he was planning to sell as temporary housing for the Titherington family, and many others have pitched in to help the family with basic needs. "People should be proud of each other for how they have come together in the community. Just in our development alone, there are 18 houses, and everybody has come together. There were 20 fire departments at our house; people we don't even know have been reaching out," Jerry

said. "It's a hard way, but it's a new beginning for us. Even after the fire — anytime it's nice out Evan wants to be outside, and the first thing he said was, 'dad, can we go throw the ball around. I realized we didn't even have any baseballs, so we took a ride to Dick's Sporting Goods and bought a ball and some cheap gloves. That's how much he likes baseball. That's our bonding time, with baseball." "This is very overwhelming, but I think it's a good experience for Evan to learn to appreciate things more and don't take things for granted. uring the holiday season, unhealthy snacks like cookies and other goodies tend to be available for you to take as you please. So how do you handle this? While it’s always important to be realistic and not deprive yourself of a few sweet treats, you may want to stay somewhat on track to feel your best and energetic through this busy season. When treats are easy to access, you’re more likely to snack unnecessarily. At home, this problem can be solved by keeping treats out of sight. However, that strategy is more difficult to avoid in

situations that you cannot control, such as at your workplace or a family party. The challenge is on! Try to be mindful of your snacking habits. If you find yourself munching just because there's food around — and not because you're hungry — it's best to avoid snacking altogether. However, if you are hungry and need a snack, opt for healthier foods. Fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds are filling snacks that don't contain added sugars or unhealthy fats — both of which can lead to weight gain. When the holidays arrive, it can be easy to overload your plate. Those who eat larger portions tend to gain weight more easily than those who don't .People are often in a rush during the holiday season, which frequently leads to multitasking during meals.Studies show that those who eat while distracted are

more likely to overeat. This is because they’re unable to pay attention to their body's fullness signals . To prevent this, eat mindfully and minimize distractions — including work and electronics.Try to chew slowly and thoroughly, which will allow you to better recognize your body's fullness signals and consume fewer calories. It can also be helpful to take a few deep breaths before you start eating. This can induce relaxation and help you keep your full attention on your plate, rather than your to-do list. Sleep deprivation, which is quite common during the holidays, may cause weight gain.This is because those who do not sleep enough tend to be hungrier, consume more calories, and exercise

less. Sleep restriction may increase your hunger hormone levels, ultimately leading to higher calorie intake. Additionally, inadequate sleep has been linked to lower metabolism This may be caused by alterations in your circadian rhythm — a biological clock that regulates many of your bodily functions . Keeping up with the demands of the holidays can be stressful. Stressed individuals commonly have high levels of cortisol, a hormone that's released in response to stress. Chronically high cortisol levels may cause weight gain, as they have been linked to greater food intake. Additionally, a stressful lifestyle may cause more cravings for junk food . For these reasons, it's important to keep stress levels under control in general — but especially during the holidays, when you might be busy and surrounded by unhealthy foods. You should also make sure that you aren't hungry while cooking, as it's much easier to go overboard on taste-testing when your stomach is growling. Try to continue to live by the eating every few hours rule to help keep you full and satisfied so those food challenges that come along are much easier to say “ no" to. The best way to overcome this is to control portion sizes or use smaller plates.To determine an appropriate portion size, read food labels and the

recommended serving sizes listed on recipes. If you can’t do either, use your best judgment to fill your plate with a reasonable amount of food. Pandoro and Panettone

I

t’s Christmas, and while Americans and British are known to celebrate with fruitcakes (or sometimes use them as doorstops, so the joke goes), Italians celebrate with sweet breads Pandoro or Panettone. In the United States Panettone is more well-known, with commercially made boxes for sale in grocery and specialty stores. But in Italy, depending upon the region, Pandoro may be more popular. Pandoro is a product of ancient breadmaking, and originally was called pan d’oro, or golden bread. While the poor were eating only black bread, the rich were eating breads made with white flour, eggs, butter and sugar or honey. Since this bread was most likely served in palaces, it became known as golden bread. Pandoro dates back to the 18th century and was extremely popular

with the Venetian aristocracy. The recipe was perfected in Verona over the course of a century, and in 1894 a baker named Dominico Melegatti obtained a patent to produce the bread commercially. Pandoro is shaped like a frustum, which in geometry is the portion of a cone or pyramid which remains after its upper part has been cut off parallel to its base. So instead of a pointy top, think of an ice cream cone with a flat top, or about ¼ of its top cut off, measuring about 10 inches high and 8 inches across the top. Pandoro has a light, fluffy, yeast-risen golden interior and a brown outer surface and is baked in a special tapered, star-shaped pandoro mold. However, unlike panettone, it traditionally does not contain candied fruit or raisins, which makes it the preferred Christmas sweet bread of many. It’s usually just dusted with powdered sugar to resemble snow on the Alps. However, these days, commercial versions often contain some sort of filling, such as limoncello or chocolate cream. This season many food magazines are showing pictures of Pandoro sliced horizontally and stacked to resemble a Christmas tree. I

suggest you go online to find such a photo, and serve it that way for Christmas. Panettone also is an Italian sweet bread, and it is shaped like a cupola, which is a tall cylinder with a dome on top. Unlike Pandoro, it is made using a process similar to sourdough, which gives it its distinctive fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth texture. Originally it contained candied orange, citron, lemon zest and raisins. Today, you can find it with the addition of chocolate chips. Usually served in a wedge with crema di mascarpone (a sweet cream sauce made with mascarpone, eggs and amaretto) or zabaglione (a sweet sauce made with egg yolks, sugar and a sweet wine such as marsala). It also is baked in a special mold. Panettone is an ancient sweet bread, dating back to the Roman Empire. It’s thought Romans sweetened a leavened cake with honey, then added fruit as time went on. Although panettone comes from the Italian panetto, or small loaf, another theory suggests that the word comes from the Milanese, “pan del ton,” meaning a “cake of luxury.” One of my favorite ways to use both Pandoro and Panettone is to

make a rich bread pudding with slices of either bread. You can taste my recipe for Panettone Bread Pudding at my restaurant, where it is one of our dessert offerings. Mama Mia, it’s delicious! meaning friends and family, readers and listeners) started our Annual Alternative Soul Holiday Drive. The drive has grown as the needs have grown and the community has made it a success and I thank you all. This year’s drive will come to an end on Sunday December 22nd with our Second Annual DJ’s Against Hunger event. This year’s line up includes DJ Dramadik, DJ Swoosh, DJ Fah D, DJ Flair, and myself. n just a few short months, Glory Days Magazine will be celebrating its seventh anniversary of covering high school sports in the Cape-Atlantic League! As we wrap up the calendar year of 2019, let's take a quick look back at some of the highlights from all the high school sports action we saw the past 12 months, and some of the storylines that dominated the headlines at glorydaysonline.com. State champs for the first time: A pair of girls sports teams captured the first state championship in their respective programs' history in 2019, as the Mainland Regional girls basketball and Ocean City girls soccer teams went all the way, winning South Jersey and then overall state

Getting Ready for Cold and Flu Season By Marci Lutsky

I

spent a lot of time on my couch during the past two weeks, not because I’m hiding from crowds in stores. My daughter was sick and it lasted for days and days. We haven’t had an illness like that in years and I learned a lot from the experience, mostly how to be prepared for the unexpected so that you are not scrambling when sickness hits. I hope your little ones stay healthy this winter but it’s always good to be prepared with these tips. Keep your medicine and supplies stocked! I can’t tell you how many times I have rummaged through drawers looking for a thermometer that works. Keep them stocked and in a place that is easily accessible. Make sure to clean it well between each use, a simple swab off with alcohol will do the trick. Make sure you have medicine on hand and know how much your child weighs as the dosage

will be dependent on their weight. I always keep both Motrin and Tylenol in the house because sometimes I need to alternate between the two. Check the expiration dates on the bottles to make sure they are still okay to administer. Buy tissues in bulk in the beginning of the season because no mater how many you have, it won’t be enough. It’s also good to keep a supply of cough drops on hand as well as a diffuser. If your child has is congested, chest rub in a must. Growing up I remember using Vick’s Vapor Rub. I use a more natural version these days for my kids as well as Do Terra Breathe essential oil. A little bit of that on the chest does wonders for clogged nasal passages. Let’s talk about how to nourish your kids when they are sick. No matter how hard I tried, my daughter refused to drink tea with honey during this recent sickness. If your kids are more open to drinking tea, keep a soothing caffeine free tea in the pantry. The single most important food to keep in your freezer is soup! Even though I’m a vegetarian blogger, my children are not vegetarians and love a good cup of chicken noodle soup when they are sick. Though I

didn’t have any on hand, I had all the ingredients to make some and now my freezer is stocked. I made it in the Instant Pot which could not have been easier or more delicious. When my kids are sick they also love cinnamon toast which is just a piece of whole wheat bread toasted with melted butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar. Keep a good supply of games in the house for sick days. Once my daughter started to feel a little better, we passed long hours playing Scrabble and Monoploy. I also knew my daughter was on the mend when she asked to bake cookies. She chose gingerbread cookies and luckily I had all of the ingredients in my pantry, including molasses. Keep your pediatrician’s office

number in your phone favorites so you can easily access it. We ended up needing to make two trips to the doctor. One of the most important things to have when your kids are sick is a good tribe. What does that mean? It means having friends to call on to pick your non-sick kids up from school and just to remind you that this will pass. I would be lost without my tribe. I hope your holidays are filled with healthy kids and happy memories but just to be on the safe side, stock your house and freezer just in case someone falls ill.

s the end of the year is soon upon us, many of us may look over 2019 and assess how kind this year has been to us and possibly wonder what lies in store for 2020. What can we change about ourselves to make 2020 an even better year? My wife asked me about any New Year resolutions I have made. My reply to her was that I had not made any which set her back a bit. “What, are you perfect?” she asked. Knowing I am far from perfect, I still elected to sidestep that minefield with my usual smart remark and told her that I try and make small trim adjustments throughout the year instead of one sudden hard drifting turn. With an eye roll, we were then done with that conversation. The truth of the matter is, in all my years I can only think of one resolution that stuck and that was to stop smoking almost forty years ago. It got me to think though, what resolutions do most people make so, of course I consulted the Internet. One site, Vitagene.com listed the most popular New Year’s resolutions by state for 2019. Thirty nine states listed “lose weight” or “get into shape” as their most popular resolutions; Nine states listed “save money” as the most popular and two states listed something job related. Although I was not surprised by the list, I was a little disappointed that there was a complete absence of resolutions pertaining to spiritual or mental health. While losing weight and getting into shape have undeniable benefits to our overall health, we must not have tunnel vision and ignore other factors in order to have a more fulfilling life. I believe the spiritual aspect is a bit too personal for me to touch on in this column

but I feel we, as a community largely ignore the need for mental health assistance. While we have no reservation about visiting our doctor with a wide array of maladies and can discuss them freely with friends and relatives not limited to but including our colonoscopy prep and results, we are prone to hide any need for discussing our mental challenges with a professional expert. There still appears to be a stigma attached to seeking out such help but there shouldn’t be. I can tell you from experience, that help is life changing. My wife and I have visited such a professional for years. Sessions have helped us deal with raising our children, husband and wife challenges, loss of family, job issues and other stressors many of us face in our journey. It is refreshing to confide in a professional who won’t judge you or share your story with other people; someone who has the tools we need to cope with the struggles many of us face day in and day out. Our professional has been such an integral part of our family for so long that we have become friends outside of his practice. But now he has retired and is moving out of the area. I asked how he went about referring his patients to other doctors. Was it by their needs or was some other criteria involved? He said their needs was an important part but also by insurance coverage; there are only two psychologists in Atlantic County who take health insurance and none in Cape May county. It is only going to be the affluent communities who are going to be able to afford out of pocket expenses? If we can get health coverage for eyecare, dental and other medical needs, we need to step up and try and get our mental health coverage as well. Make that a resolution. Carols, Monologues and Comedy One Act puts Ocean City crowd in the holiday spirit By Tonya Smith

he S & L Players brought down the house in the Ocean City Library on Saturday (December 14, 2019) with music, laughter and sixteen years of providing entertainment for South Jersey. Over forty folks filled the lecture room to hear Bette Kaminski and Bill Johnson from a local band called Package Goods Orchestra. They played stripped down holiday favorites like “White Christmas,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “Mele Kalikimaka.” The crowd sang loudly and with big smiles. After the sing along, Sam Goodman (a local actor) came bounding in to the voice of John Fogerty singing “Put Me In Coach!” His monologue, from the play Rounding Third, was

written by Richard Dresser. It was a look inside the mind of a little league baseball coach that really wants to win the big game. His brutal and funny honesty revealing that he was a die hard player in his youth that didn’t realize his own baseball dream. He is now trying to live it through his team. The featured one-act was “Lucky Numbers”. It featured and was written by Sam Sardina who portrayed Joe Dupree, a man who believes that he has just won the lottery! After telling off his boss (Ken Groome), telling his wife ( Leanne McGiffin) that they had won and finding out that his brother

in-law (Scott Higbee) had just pulled off the largest prank of all-time...Sam finds himself in quite the predicament! Though most of the play is in good spirits, there were a few tenuous moments that brought the audience from laughter to near tears when gaining a better understanding of the faltering marriage of the two main characters and the cavalier nature of the brother in-law. But in the holiday spirit, peace is found, a job is recovered and a marriage is mended. And the crowd was delighted! 2020 Vision: Resolutions You Can Keep

or many of us, we hoped 2019 would bring happier memories than the tumultuous 2018. However, this year too had it’s struggles. Maybe you had a bad breakup, family issues or dealt with mental illness. Maybe your favorite pet died or you’re facing some financial difficulties. To make matters worse, there’s that looming regret of not keeping our New Year’s resolutions. Maybe you bought a gym membership and devoted yourself to putting some wear on those new sneakers, or you promised to cook at least five meals per week, or you would finally find your one true love. If that didn’t happen for you, you’re not alone. So how do we take back 2020? Dedicate this year to feasible New Year’s Resolutions. 1. Self-Care As a self-diagnosed workaholic, I cannot stress this resolution enough. Self-care restores your soul

so you can be your most productive, authentic self. Read a book, unplug from technology, light a candle, draw a bath, or a have a glass of wine. Go for a long run on the boardwalk. Meet a friend for coffee. Do whatever makes you feel whole. So many of us (young professionals especially) pressure ourselves to keep going and working ourselves to death. This year, commit at least three hours per week to selfcare, and trust me, you won’t regret it. 2. Strengthen Relationships Okay, so you know those acquaintances you keep around? Those friends who you only hang out twice per year? That cute guy who works across the street? Talk to them. I’ve been challenging myself to be more mindful, and a crucial part of life is human connection. Take time and get to know the people around you. Buy someone from church a cup of coffee. Invite the girl from yoga to a smoothie. Bake cookies for a neighbor. Dedicate your next year to living freely and laughing deeply. There’s

something truly spiritual about deep conversation and sitting alongside someone in joy or pain.

3. Spend Time in Nature I know I’m not the first to preach about going outside, but nature is kinda amazing. Sure, you could follow nature blogs on Instagram and tweet about global warming, but there’s nothing like getting fresh air. Read a magazine on the beach (bundle up first!). Camp in the Pine Barrens for a few nights with your family or friends. Drive up to the mountains and do some real hiking. Take long walk around your local park and blast some tunes. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, take a cross-country trip to experience the Grand Canyon

or the Rocky Mountains. Time is fleeting, friends. Let’s soak up the most we can of this beautiful world.

The 20th Annual Egg Harbor City Christmas Parade Comes to Town on December 21st

anta Claus is coming to town this weekend! Grab your cosiest hats, scarves and gloves and make sure you are wrapped up warm to watch the annual Egg Harbour City Christmas parade as it returns this Saturday 21st December. This is truly a staple of the holiday season in Egg Harbor City, as the entire city comes out to watch the amazing floats travel through the streets in an event that the whole community looks forward to every year. Last year’s event saw hundreds of people line the streets as numerous floats, bands, costumed characters, community organizations and emergency vehicles made their way through the city. 11-year-old Jack from Egg Harbor City went to last year’s parade and

he really cannot wait for this year’s: ‘My favorite part was the fire trucks! They gave us so much candy and I got to see Santa. It was awesome!’ Christmas parades are a pinnacle of this time of year and are a great way to spend the evening with family and friends in a festive environment where everyone can get in the Christmas Spirit and enjoy the show. The Egg Harbor City Christmas Parade has been going strong for 19 years now with this year marking its 20th. What started as a conversation between friends, Lloyd Wimberg and Brian Beals, and just small event with family and friends has now grown into a highly anticipated community event.

You can walk around and look in some of the stores who will be staying open late, grab a hot cocoa, a slice of pizza or just set up camp with your beach chair and watch the fun unfold around you. A huge amount of credit must go to the creators of these floats because they are just simply spectacular. The amount of effort that goes into them each year is tremendous and it really shows because every year it just seems to get better and better. There is no chance of getting bored because there is always something different to watch; performances, community groups or live music. Melissa K. from Galloway went last year with her family and had this to say about the

event which she looks forward to every year: ‘It really is just a great night for everyone. Me and my husband will meet up with our friends while the kids meet up with theirs, they get some cotton candy and watch the different floats. It is just a great, fun evening and we do it every year. It has become a tradition in our family.’ This year’s parade has over 40 participants with a number of floats, fire trucks, bands playing your favorite holiday songs, plus a whole host of amazing surprises. Some of the participants already signed up include 4-H Twirlybirds, Baton Club and Cloggers, Cub Scout Troop 76, ACUA, EHC Community School Band and 401 West Hair Salon. And of course, no Christmas parade is complete without a visit from the main man himself, Santa Claus! Make sure the kids are at the front line and ready to catch that candy. directly from Santa. They probably won’t stop talking about it until way past Christmas day! The line-up for floats is at 5pm at City Hall (500 London Avenue) with the parade stepping off at 6pm. For spectators, if you are early you can grab the best spot in the house right outside of Lou’s Barber Shop (319 Philadelphia Ave). The route well then take the parade down Liverpool to Arago down Philadelphia to route 50 (White Horse Pike) then make a U-Turn and finish off down Philadelphia Ave to the Fire Department. There will be parking available on the streets however this fills up quickly so ensure you get down early to grab a spot. There are also still a number of float slots available if you want to be a part of this annual tradition. Maybe you are part of a dance troop with a killer Christmas routine that will WOW spectators, or a local business that wants to

riends of Jean Webster Inc, The Boys & Girls Club of AC and the family and friends of Jon Rosky are very happy to announce that we have combined our efforts to offer a “Sister Jean style” holiday meal and a new practical gift, to over 300 people in Atlantic City.

In the spirit of Jean Webster’s vision of hospitality and giving, the first 300 people to arrive at Boys & Girls Club of AC on Sat 12/21 at 1PM in need of a high quality hot meal and a practical gift of work boots, winter coat, hat, gloves, socks, blanket, etc will be served a hot dinner of glazed ham, mac & cheese, string beans & carrots, a beverage and bag of Christmas cookies. Once the meal is completed, each guest will be offered a new practical gift.
