It's a Wonderful Life

T
his week I had the opportunity to reunite with some old friends, my college roommates and sorority sisters. We were so close during that season of our lives, but life took us in different directions upon graduation. We fell out of touch, yet reconnected once again in recent years through Facebook. Although the four of us are now spread across several states, we scheduled a long overdue meeting in Philadelphia this past week. It had been 24 years since the last time we had all been together. Babies were born, grew up, marriages dissolved and new relationships bloomed. We chatted and caught up with one another again over a long lunch. There were hugs and laughter and much reminiscing of our college day antics. As we headed back to our cars , I glanced back to see them strolling a few steps behind, casually talking and joking with one another. That moment, albeit so small, felt sur-
real as if I just glanced back in time. I smiled as I was reminded of a quote from a favorite Christmas movie, "It's a Wonderful Life." "No man is a failure who has friends," George Bailey's angel, Clarence told him. The 1946 film is loaded with valuable life lessons, but my favorites are
the value of friendship and how each of our lives impacts others in ways we may not even realize. In the end, many came together to help George Bailey in his time of need. He hadn't even known all the lives he had made a difference in.

"Each man's life touches so many other lives, and when he isn't around he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?" says George Bailey's angel, Clarence. He points out that without George around, so many things would have been different. When I stop to think about it, if it wasn't for those college friends, I most likely wouldn't have met my husband. Like a kaleidoscope, one small turn can change the whole picture. So many twists and turns throughout life's journey that put us on the exact path we are meant to be on.
I love the holidays - the movies, the music, the colors and lights, the traditions and feelings of nostalgia, and most of all the coming together of family and friends. I'm reminded that it's really not about the gifts, but rather the relationships, smiles, laughter and memories we create together. It really is a wonderful life! Wishing you and your family a blessed holiday season!

Porch Performances Bring Unique Tradition to Somers Point

I
n a yearly tradition that goes back over twenty years, The Riddlesbrood Players put on an entertaining performance of the Charles Dickens classic The Christmas Carol in Somers Point’s Historic District. Each of the acts are produced at different porch fronts with the first scene taking place at a residential home along Somers Avenue. Crowds would then walk to another porch along Bay Avenue before making their way to Delaware Avenue, with the final scene taking place at Gregory’s. Last Saturday, audiences young and old braved the cold temperatures to watch this exhilarating production. Nicholas Regine was the Director
of Community Education and Recreation for the City of Somers Point and organized a number of events, including the Good Old Days Festival and Beach Concert Series. Nicholas recalls the first performance, which took place in the late 1990s. “We wanted to start a Christmas activity. We thought it would be a nice idea to put one act on one porch and one act on another.” The Porch Performances were born. After going on hiatus in 2004, the Porch Performances were brought back to life three years ago, and is now an annual tradition. Kathleen Arleth, a member of the Unique Experiences Club, owes

the success of the annual production to the generosity of Somers Point locals who kindly lend their porches for the night. “Since its revival, the same three porches, including Gregory’s, have been consistently in on the whole action.” The performance is organized by the Somers Point Unique Experiences Club, a group dedicated to bringing distinct events to the city.
Last year, the club organized an event called the “We’re All Bozos on this Bus” Bar Tour, consisting of a group of twenty people dressed as clowns visiting local bars throughout the city. Historic facts and information about each bar and pub were presented throughout the tour. The group will soon be presenting April in Paris, an annual city-wide event celebrating all things French from music to poetry,

It’s About Time Spent By Jeff Whitaker
T
he countdown is on and with Thanksgiving falling so late in November this year, the Christmas Season seems to have come upon us much sooner. Before we know it, the big day will be here and gone. So, how will we manage to maximize the time we have with those we love during the next couple of weeks? I don’t know about you, but my wife and I increasing find that time spent is much more important than gifts exchanged. Of course, everyone likes to receive gifts. For children, the excitement of writing out their wish list and then the anticipation of unwrapping presents brings with it magical moments. But just as much, we are finding after the wrapping paper hits the trash and the Holidays are over, what our children talk about more are the memories we made. It’s the trip to New York City to walk around the Big Apple and see the Rockefeller Center tree and Saks Fifth Avenue window displays; that’s what everyone will talk about for months and even years to come. Can’t make it to “the city”. That’s no problem. We find a ride to Cape May or Historic Smithville, looking at the lights and enjoying a walk around sipping hot chocolate is just as memorable. It could be a special

meal you all share together. I know a couple of friends of ours who every year share the same tradition. Dad goes out with his girls for dinner to pick out presents for Mom. They make a night of it and it’s a special time shared together. Maybe it’s picking out the Christmas tree as a family or gathering one night to decorate your home together. It really doesn’t take much of an imagination and it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. That’s the point. It’s not the materialism of the Season, it’s about time spent. I know for some of you, this time of year brings back memories of years gone by and loved ones who are no longer with you. You may be reading this and thinking, none of this applies to me. I hear you. But I’d say that’s why it’s even more important to find close friends, family or co-workers to make memories with. I’d even challenge you to find someone else to invest in. As we reach out to others, most often we will find others reach out to us. So, whatever special day you celebrate this Season, recognize that time spent goes a whole lot further than money spent. he Ocean City Music Pier stage will light up with the sights and sounds of the season as the Ocean City Theatre Company gives five performances of “Lights, Camera Christmas: the 2019 Holiday Spectacular” over the next two weekends. The restored Life Saving Station (at the corner of Fourth Street and Atlantic Avenue in Ocean City) will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 14 and Dec. 15. Special guest speakers will give lectures on the Sindia at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day. Portions of a Sindia journal found in 1960 will be read, and newly acquired Sindia artifacts will be on display. At the same time, a new Sindia display at the Ocean City Historical Museum (1735 Simpson Avenue) will be unveiled, and photos will be available for purchase. The Sindia came ashore in the surf near 17th Street on Dec. 15, 1901. Surfmen from Life Saving Station 30 helped bring the crew to safety. The station has been restored and appears as it would have in the era of the Sindia rescue.

Healthy Tips To Protect Your Liver By Nancy Adler
T
he liver is a powerhouse of an organ. Liver health is vital for overall health. Liver dysfunction can lead to liver disease, metabolic disorder, and even Type 2 diabetes. While it may be impossible to manage all risk factors, consuming certain foods and drinks may help promote liver health. In this article, I will cover the best foods for liver health, their beneficial effects for the organ, and some foods to avoid. Coffee appears to be good for the liver, especially because it protects against issues such as fatty liver disease. A daily coffee intake may help reduce the risk of chronic liver disease. It may also protect the liver from damaging conditions, such as liver cancer. Coffee, it reports, seems to reduce fat buildup in the liver. It also increases protective antioxidants in the liver. Compounds in coffee also help liver enzymes rid the body of cancer-causing substances. Consuming oatmeal is an easy way to add fiber to the diet. Fiber is an important tool for digestion, and
the specific fibers in oats may be especially helpful for the liver. Oats and oatmeal are high in compounds called beta-glucans. The review also notes that beta-glucans from oats appear to help reduce the amount of fat stored in the liver , which could also help protect the liver. More clinical studies are necessary to confirm this, however. People looking to add oats or oatmeal to their diet should look for whole oats or steel-cut oats, rather than prepackaged oatmeal. Prepackaged oatmeal may contain fillers such as flour or sugars, which will not be as beneficial for the body. Green tea may help reduce overall fat content, fight against oxidative stress, and reduce other signs of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease . It is important to note that tea may be better than extracts, as some extracts may damage the liver rather than heal it. There are still no specific recommendations for people with this condition to consume tea or tea extracts, but the link to liver health is promising. Adding garlic to the diet may also help stimulate the liver. Garlic consumption reduces key weight and fat content in people with NAFLD, with no changes to lean body mass. This is beneficial, as being overweight or obese is a contributing factor to NAFLD. Everyone loves berries! Many dark berries, such as blueberries , raspberries, and cranberries, contain antioxidants called polyphenols, which may
help protect the liver from damage. Regularly eating berries may also help stimulate the immune system. Grapes, grape juice, and grape seeds are rich in antioxidants that may help the liver by reducing inflammation and preventing liver damage. Eating whole, seeded grapes is a simple way to add these compounds to the diet. A grape seed extract supplement may also provide antioxidants. Grapefruit contains two primary antioxidants: naringin and naringenin. These may help protect the liver from injury by reducing inflammation and protecting the liver cells. The compounds may also reduce fat buildup in the liver and increase the enzymes that burn fat. This may make grapefruit a helpful tool in the fight against NAFLD. t’s good to be back in the pages of Shore Local after a few weeks off. Thanks to all of you who reached out during my brief hospital stay. I’m just fine thanks, and I appreciate all of you who noticed I was missing for a few weeks. So much has happened as the Eagles needed overtime, but kept their playoff hopes alive with a big win over the Giants on Monday Night Football. The Sixers are still an entertaining watch, as they have a few games with a national TV audience coming up. The Flyers ended up the winningest team in the NHL for the month of November, and set a franchise record for wins in that month. They look great under first-year coach Alain Vigneault. The Phillies went out and got an established starter from the free agent market and a division
rival. Finally, congrats to all the high school football teams that played last weekend at Rutgers for either a state championship or a regional championship. From the entertainment world, “The Irishman” is out, but I still have to see it. I’m also seeing unbelievable trailers for movies like the next James Bond flick & the next Wonder Woman movie too. I love when new trailers come out. Plus, from TV, a long-running drama still manages to get to me with a historic episode. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ●● It looked like Eli Manning was going to spoil the playoff hopes of the Eagles the way the first half unfolded on Monday Night Football, but down 17-3 at the half, the Birds rallied to score the next 20 points and win the game 23-17 in overtime. Guys like Boston Scott & Greg Ward played pivotal roles in the win. The Eagles control their own playoff destiny as if they win out, they win the NFC East and get into the postseason. Not only would they get in, they’d HOST a game, because the NFC East winner gets a Wildcard team. Unbelievable, right?

He was ripped mercilessly for his performances against Seattle & Miami, but Carson Wentz won the Eagles that football game. Wentz finished 33-for50 for 325 yards and 2 touchdowns. With basically ZERO wide receivers and only a pair of healthy tight ends. Starter Alshon Jeffrey limped off the field and did not return. Nelson Agholor was a pregame scratch. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside had to leave with cramps at one point. Sure, it’s a win against the two-win Giants, but the Eagles did what they needed to do and now their playoff hopes are in their control. Of course, since they’re the Eagles, they might go to Washington and LOSE. Believe it or not, there are scenarios where that could happen and they could STILL make the playoffs. Let’s just put it this way, even if you are upset with how the season has gone so far, you have to keep paying attention because neither Dallas nor Philly is taking control of things, so each week you’re still not sure WHO is going to win and make the playoffs…! In basketball, the Sixers sit at 17-7 and 2nd in the Atlantic Division as of this writing. They have marquee games this week with Denver and Boston. Both of them will be televised nationally by TNT. You can still watch Marc Zumoff & Alaa Abdelnaby locally, but the fact that there’s national coverage shows you the level of interest in the Sixers this season. Matisse Thybulle has been my breakout star of the season so far. The rookie rolled his ankle the other night, and then came back the next game to hit for 20 points and help the Sixers hold off Toronto 110-104. That game definitely highlighted a troubling trend though. The Sixers were up comfortably and then finished with SIX turnovers in the final 3 minutes and 7 seconds of the game. They had 11 fourth quarter turnovers…! Not the kind of performance that instills confidence about your team if they go up against a worthy opponent. Speaking of worthy opponents, the Flyers go on a road trip this week to Denver, Minnesota & Winnipeg. The Flyers were the winningest team in the NHL in the month

of November, and set a franchise record for wins in that month. That’s pushed them up into a playoff spot and has gotten the attention of folks who do NHL power rankings & such. They’re going to have to start the road trip without their top scorer though in Travis Konecny. “TK” as he’s known, went out with a concussion against Ottawa last weekend. It’s not known how much time he’ll miss, but the Flyers have to hope he returns as soon as possible. Taking his spot on the top line (at least to start the road trip), is winger Tyler Pitlick…not James Van Reimsdyk. While that may turn some heads, Pitlick has the kind of wheels to at least come CLOSE to what TK brings that line. That said, Alain Vigneault can make adjustments as needed if Pitlick does not live up to top-line status. Before I leave the Flyers, let’s talk about the goaltending as both Carter Hart & Brian Elliott have been strong. Hart is the solid starter, but in today’s NHL, you can’t play them all, and “Moose” as Elliott is known, is now healthy and showing that he can steal you a game along the way. A good goaltending tandem is crucial in the regular season. Then, most times in the playoffs, the coach tends to ride the #1 guy. Now on to the Phillies, as first let me pay off the fact that the last time I did write in these pages, I mentioned they were looking for a hitting coach. They went with Joe Dillon from the Nationals, and here’s hoping he can fix Rhys Hoskins and get him back to normal. The Phillies also made news when they announced they would NOT be bringing back longtime players Cesar Hernandez & Maikel Franco. But, the biggest Phillies news came when they announced they had signed Zack Wheeler as a free agent. Wheeler is 29, and he’s not Gerrit Cole or Stephen Strasburg, but he is an established MLB starter and could develop into an elite arm. Did they overpay at five years and $118 million…? Last year, the Phillies weren’t willing to give Patrick Corbin a sixth year. They wanted him as a free agent. The Nationals gave him that sixth year, and Corbin ended up giving Washington an outstanding season. Owner John Middleton didn’t want to see that scenario play out again. In fact, as I write this, reports are coming out that the Phillies have landed shortstop Didi Gregorius as well…! Heck yeah, Middleton putting his money where his mouth is. Let me note for the record, that the Phillies have NEVER exceeded the luxury tax before, so this would be a first. In high school football, I want to say congratulations to local teams Hammonton, Cedar Creek, St. Joseph & Holy Spirit. All of them got to play at Rutgers last weekend for either a regional championship or a state championship. We are one step away from a true football state champion in each group, and I think that is way overdue. For the decade I spent in Nebraska, they played to a true state champion. Of course, they didn’t play Thanksgiving games, and I understand

that many folks don’t want that tradition to end. I’m with Mike McGarry from the Press of Atlantic City on this one, move those rivalry games to Week Zero before college kids & others go back to school or work. You’ll still draw a big crowd (albeit in shorts), and the winner of that game can get good power points toward their playoff chances. I’ll close with a few items from the entertainment world as “The Irishman” is out, but I haven’t seen it yet. It’s long, and I’m going to make that my Christmas Day viewing with my family. I have seen some reviews that say it’s too long and drags on too much, but I’m a

sucker for Scorsese and the fact that it has Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino and others means it’s still going to be a “must watch” for me. ●● Other movies I’ve just seen trailers of that are coming in the pipeline include the last James Bond movie with Daniel Craig. Titled “No Time To Die”, it’s going to be Craig’s last appearance as 007, and I can’t wait to see it. I think he’s been the second best Bond ever, with Sean Connery getting my top spot and Roger Moore getting bumped down from three to two in my rankings. How would you rank the actors who have played James Bond…? I’m also looking forward to “Wonder Woman 1984” that’s due out next spring too. Gal Gadot just OWNED the role in her debut and Chris Pine will be back too. I think I saw Kristen Wiig in the trailer as well, so maybe there will be some more humor in it too…? Amazon Princesses? Yes please…! Lastly, I wanted to include a blurb about the show “Grey’s Anatomy”. The show has been on now for 16 years and has become mostly “comfort food” for me. Well, the 350th episode had flashback
footage of characters who have passed away, characters who left the show, and more. I enjoyed it so much, I was compelled to tweet about it after the show, and promptly got a reply from someone I work with in the radio industry. His response read “Hey Pete…just stick to the Eagles, okay?” Don’t forget, you can listen to me on the radio each Saturday morning on 97.3 ESPN from 8-10 a.m. It’s the “Pete Thompson Show”, and I hope you’ll tune in & interact with me on the air. Common Baking Mistakes to Avoid By Marci Lutsky
T
here is nothing worse than baking close to one hundred cookies only to find them ruined. Over the years I have found out the hard way about baking mistakes. The good news is that I have learned from them. If you have cookie swap baking in your future, make sure to read this carefully so you don’t find yourself making a last minute run to ShopRite and trying to pass off their cookies as your own (I swear, I have never done this). We have moved many times over the years and after my coffee pot, the next thing I always unpack is my oven thermometer. Do not rely on your oven to tell you when it’s preheated. A difference of fifty degrees can make or break baked goods like bread, cake and cookies. You can buy a reliable oven thermometer for less than $10, well worth the investment. If your baked goods cook unevenly, I rec-
ommend rotating the pans halfway through the baking process. Ovens can have hotter spots than others so this is highly recommended. If there is one thing that kids leave my cooking classes knowing, it’s how to level a cup of flour. If you aren’t sure what this means, read on! You do not want to pack down the flour. I suggest using a scoop to gently fill the measuring cup with flour and then use the back of a knife to remove the excess flour. Two cups means two cups and if you pack down the flour, you will not be adding the accurate amount. While we are on the subject of flour, making sure you are using the right flour. There are big differences between whole wheat, all-purpose and bread flour. If you are planning to make a recipe, check to see that you have all the ingredients and equally important, that the ingredients are not expired. If you don’t plan to use the big bag

of baking soda in a relatively short amount of time, buy a smaller bag! If you are doubling a recipe, make sure that you have the correct amount of eggs and butter. It’s no fun getting halfway through mixing ingredients only to find out that you are short two eggs. Butter is one of the trickiest ingredients to work with in my opinion and getting it softened to perfection comes with experience. If a recipe calls for softened butter, make sure to leave it at room temperature for about an hour. If you are making pie crust or cookies that calls for chilling the dough, do not try to skip this step. If you have ever tried to roll out dough for gingerbread cookies that hasn’t been chilled, you know it will be impossible to hold together.
Here are some other tips that are equally important as those already mentioned. Don’t overcrowd your pan. Allow space for your cookies to spread during baking. Use the right baking pan or dish. For pies, I prefer glass to ceramic baking dishes. I find it cooks more evenly. Invest in some cooling racks. When you first remove cookies, brownies or cupcakes from the oven, let them cool in the pan for a few minutes before removing them to a cooling rack. Always let the baked goods cool completely before placing them in an enclosed container. Baking is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season. Eliminate stress by planning ahead to make sure you have the right ingredients, they are fresh and you have all the necessary kitchen tools. Cookies bring a smile to everyone’s face at holiday season so brighten up someone’s day with a batch!

CRANBERRY OATMEAL BARS
This recipe for Cranberry Oatmeal Bars is one that you will want to keep in your recipe arsenal. It’s a quick and perfect treat to make for brunch, an afternoon snack, Thanksgiving dessert or just anytime. The nice thing about this recipe is that you don’t need to cook the crust first, it all just gets cooked one time in the oven. It’s very seasonal for this time of year with dried cranberries but we actually make these bars all year round. You start by mixing together the dry ingredients of flour, oats and spices. To that you add melted butter and fresh squeezed orange juice. My mini chefs love squeezing juice out of citrus fruits. My kids received these adorable mini chef jackets as gifts from their grandparents and when I told my told daughter it was time for Mini Chef Mondays, she ran to get hers. Looking for a cute gift for the holidays? My kids love their chef coats.
For the filling you mix together cranberries, sour cream, vanilla extract, orange rind, and an egg white. You add that on top of the crust and then top it with some reserved oat topping. Cook that for about 40 minutes and then cut it into bars. My kids love this as dessert but I love one of

these bars in the afternoon with tea. Either way, these bars are the perfect amount of sweetness and are so easy to whip up. Ingredients ●● Crust ●● 1 cup all purpose flour ●● 1 cup quick-cooking oats ●● 1/4 cup light brown sugar ●● 1/4 teaspoon salt ●● 1/4 teaspoon baking soda ●● 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon ●● 6 tablespoons melted butter ●● 3 tablespoons orange juice Filling 1 1/3 cup dried cranberries ●● 3/4 cup sour cream ●● 1/4 cup granulated sugar ●● 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour ●● 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ●● 1/2 teaspoon grated orange rind ●● 1 egg white, lightly beaten ●●
Instructions Preheat oven to 325. To prepare crust combine flour through cinnamon in a medium bowl and whisk together. Add melted butter and orange juice. Stir until moistened. Reserve 1/2 cup of this mixture. Pour the rest into a greased 8X8 baking pan coated in cooking spray. To prepare filling combine cranberries through egg white in a medium bowl. Spread in pan on top of oat mixture. Using hands, crumble reserved oat mixture on top. Bake for 40 minutes until edges are golden. When completely cool, cut into bars.

Hidden Gem of South Jersey—Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge

T
his Gem of South Jersey isn’t exactly hidden since it extends across three counties and 50 miles of coastline. The Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge protects more than 47,000 acres of Southern New Jersey Coastal habitats, and over 6,000 acres designated as wilderness area. According to refuge sources, originally, the Brigantine and Barnegat Divisions were two distinct refuges, “created to protect tidal wetland and shallow bay habitat for migratory water birds.” The Barnegat Division, located on the inland side of the Barnegat Bay in Ocean County, was established in 1967. Much closer to our readers is the Brigantine Division
in Atlantic County, established in 1939. The two refuges were combined in 1984 under the Edwin B. Forsythe name, in honor of the late conservationist/Congressman from New Jersey. The refuge headquarters, visitor information center, Wildlife Drive, and trails are located in the Oceanville section of Galloway Township. Many animals call the refuge home year-round, while other wildlife is seasonal. Because the refuge is located on the Atlantic Flyway, birdwatchers can enjoy views of migrating birds as well as those that remain year-round. Over a hundred species of birds can be found throughout the year at the refuge. Visitors can drive along the popular 8-mile Wildlife Drive that leads through wetlands and woodlands. You can also walk or bike the “drive”, or hike one of the four nature trails. Photography opportunities abound; if you’re lucky, you may spy a red fox, muskrat, or river otter. Re-

cently, I went to the refuge with my family, and we were happy to see snow geese, American Black Ducks, and Atlantic Brants. If you go soon, keep an eye out for bald eagles that return to their nests or build new nests in November and December to prepare for the new breeding season (usually around late January or February). Keena Graham, Visitor Services Manager for the refuge, likes the phrase “Our refuge is your refuge”. She feels that the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge is a refuge in all senses of the word. Although it provides a safe haven for wildlife, she finds that visitors find refuge for
themselves and gain peace and solace there, while getting “in touch with themselves and their environment.” Like the Beatles, we can all get by with a little help from our friends. The Friends of Forsythe, a non-profit group established in 1998, provides much needed support and services to the refuge with a variety of projects and activities through their volunteers. “Jitney Saturdays” are among the services the Friends of Forsythe provide. On selected Saturdays throughout the year, free guided tours of Wildlife Drive are offered, complete with volunteer “interpreters” riding along to relay interesting facts about the

In November, the refuge hosted the South Jersey Astronomy Club for a stargazing party, “Starry Night Skywatch.” Members of the club shared their knowledge and telescopes. oliday lights often put many in the spirit of the season. Everyone knows at least one person/ family/house that goes all out every season. With the departure of the Sooy Lane lights in Absecon, many people were left wondering where they would get their holiday pick me up. Little did they know, that only a few blocks away at 4 East Curran Drive in Absecon, the Yard Family Christmas Display has been growing and flourishing for the past seven years! Anthony Gerrish and his band of elves (Dee Ann Yard, Lauren Greeley-Calogero and a host of others) have assembled a magical walk through experience for all to see and
enjoy. With thousands of lights, yard decorations, music, two major walk through experiences and a gazebo with a full Christmas tree for photo opportunities; the Yard Family have given the area a real holiday treat. “What was a small hobby became a full time job.” Gerrish said. “We are planning two years out, every year.” With a focus on safety and all around family entertainment, the Yard Family Christmas Display has something for everyone. According to Mr. Gerrish, “ We like to use LED lights in older forms-it brings the
older decorations to life! It’s always about the details.” The spectacular is the perfect blend of new and retro! The decorations are not the only stars in this show. Some very special guests are making an appearance for

Light Show on the Lake ▶through ▶ Jan 6th Over 120 Christmas Trees made from over 50,000 Christmas lights, magically float on Lake Meone in the center of Historic Smithville. The moment darkness falls, an orchestrated show of lights and music is played out across the lake. Caesers, Bally's, Harrah's Employees Give Back
T
is the season for giving, and Caesars Entertainment (CET) Atlantic City HEROES, the company’s employee-volunteers at Bally’s, Caesars, and Harrah’s Resort, have been out and about in full force over the last couple weeks, lifting spirits and making a difference in the local community. On the heels of a record-setting donation of $72,000 to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer South Jersey Chapter, yesterday team members from Caesars’ three resorts in Atlantic City – Bally’s, Caesars, and Harrah’s Resort – gathered at Bally’s to present The Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots campaign over 1,200 toys, 64 bikes, and two donations totaling $15,000 to help make the holiday season brighter for children and families in the area. Each year, a large part of the toy drive’s overwhelming success is thanks to Bally’s Customer Development Executive, Jennifer Elberson, who has hosted a special customer event for the past 10 years, encouraging team members and customers to donate. Over the years, the event has raised over 10,000 toys for Toys

The food and beverage team at The Wild Wild West, in partnership with Tito’s Vodka, additionally stepped up to raise $10,000, which the company then topped with an additional $5,000 cash donation, and 64 bikes were donated thanks to Jameson Whiskey. “The thought of innocent children not having toys on Christmas is what drove me to want to do more with the party,” said Elberson. “Together with my boss (Vice President of Casino Marketing, Steve Haan), co-workers, and our amazing customers, we have more and more toys to donate every year.” Over the next
two weeks, Caesars’ HEROES will be out in full force supporting the community through volunteerism and charitable giving. Additional Caesars Entertainment holiday donations include the adoptions of 145 elders from six local nursing homes from Atlantic City to Cape May through Second Wind Dreams’ Gift of Light initiative, and over 80 families through the Salvation Army’s Adopt A Family program. The HEROES will be out in the community again before Christmas to help serve Atlantic City residents in need a warm holiday meal. “For 40 years, Caesars has established a
legacy in the market, deeply-rooted in our commitment to the community, helping to make Atlantic City a great place to both work and play,” said Ron Baumann, Regional President for Bally’s, Caesars, and Harrah’s Resort. “We call our employee-volunteers HEROES and they truly live up to this title each year for their passion and service to the community. Christmas Classic penned by Atlantic City songwriter
T
he popular Christmas song "Jingle Bell Rock" was first released by Bobby Helms in 1957. It has received frequent airplay in the United States during every Christmas season since then. "Jingle Bell Rock" was composed by Joseph Carleton Beal (1900–1967) and James Ross Boothe (1917–1976). Beal was a longtime resident of
South Ocean Avenue in Atlantic City. The classic has been performed by many, but Helms' version is the best known. The song's title and some of its lyrics are an extension of the old Christmas standard, "Jingle Bells." It makes brief references to other popular songs of the 1950s, such as "Rock Around the Clock," and mentions going to a "Jingle hop."

AC Ballet’s The Nutcraker will captivate audiences this holiday season for it’s 37th year.

here are many words or phrases that your mind immediately associates with Christmas time and without a doubt ‘The Nutcracker’ is at the top of the list. Now I am not talking about that little contraption you use to make your candied walnuts; I am talking about the classic and enchanting ballet. That’s right, a ballet. I know what some of you may be thinking – ‘A ballet?! Isn’t there just a film I could watch?” But let me assure you, there is NOTHING more captivating at Christmas time than watching the graceful and mesmerizing movements of the Atlantic City Ballet. Based on the story by Hoffman and with music by Tchaicovsky, this production is now the
Atlantic City Ballet’s most famous performance. ‘The Nutcracker’ tells the story of a young girl, Clara, who is given a magical nutcracker doll on Christmas eve. She is whisked away into a world of dancing gingerbread men, the Kingdom of Snow and of course, the Sugar Plum Fairy in the Land of Sweets. Clara meets an assortment of dazzling characters, including the notorious Mouse King, along her journey with the Nutcracker Prince. This is a production that truly embodies the holiday spirit and is a total crowd pleaser and suitable for all ages. The Atlantic City Ballet was founded in 1982 by the critically acclaimed International Ballerina, Phyllis Papa. They perform a variety of shows such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the incredibly popular, Carmen, at different venues along the east coast. that has ever appealed to me. Honestly, I was really surprised. It’s just a really impressive show to watch and my kids absolutely love it.’ Some of you may already be fans of the ballet and rest assured, the Atlantic City Ballet’s rendition of The Nutcracker is as moving as it is thrilling. However, if the ballet is not something you would typically watch, if you try just one new thing at Christmas then let it be this. Sure, there have been film adaptations on it with some versions adding their own unique twist, but none of them really compare to the immersive experience of going to see it live. Ballet dancers are renowned for the dedication and hard work they put into their work and from the rehearsal schedule on their website, this production is no different. The Nutcracker is now one of the most famous ballets in the world and once you watch it, it is not hard to understand why. When you fully engage in the performance the feeling is like no other and I guarantee you will leave the show with a new sense of wonderment and will be absorbed by the magic.
The AC Ballet will start off their performances at Stockton College (101 Ve r a King Farris Drive, Galloway) on December 13th and 14th with show times at 7pm (13th) and 10:30am and 3pm (14th). The next show after that is at Caesar's Atlantic City Hotel and Casino (2100 Pacific Avenue, Atlantic City) on December 15th at 4pm but will be another show a week later on December 22nd at the same location and time. Can’t make those shows? Well they will also be performing at The Strand (400 Clifton Avenue, Lakewood) on December 21st at 7pm. s the holiday season approaches, those of us with children in our lives are likely finding ourselves searching for the toy that will bring the biggest smile to our kids’ faces on Christmas morning. Some of us might be buying the same toys for our children that our parents bought for us decades ago. If that’s you, then the toy you’re buying is probably on this list of the best-selling children’s toys of all time. LEGOs One of the most popular toys in history, LEGOs started in Denmark in 1949 and the small bricks allowed children to build their imaginations into reality. LEGO, which means "play well" in Danish, still endures today, with popular models including sets connected with the Harry Potter and Star Wars franchises. "Legoland" theme parks exist all over the world, with parks in California, Florida, and in the toy's home country of Denmark, among other places. Fun Fact: As of 2011, LEGO had produced enough bricks so that there were 52 bricks for each person on the entire planet.
Cabbage Patch Kids Created in the 1970s by a 21-yearold art student named Xavier Roberts, the Cabbage Patch Kids dolls are one of the most successful doll franchises of all time. The original dolls were hand-stitched, soft fabric sculptures that Roberts called “The Little People,” and which he sold - or “adopted” - at arts and crafts fairs. The Cabbage Patch Kids were patented in 1978, and they hit the toy market in 1983. By their 30th anniversary, in 2003, more than 130 million Cabbage Patch Kids had been sold - and the number just keeps climbing.
Yo-yo It really is impossible to tell how many yo-yos have been produced since their invention around 2,500 years ago, but anything with that kind of staying power has to be considered one of the best-selling toys in history. On the commercial U.S. market, they’ve been around since Pedro Flores opened the Yo-yo Manufacturing Company in Santa Barbara, California, circa 1928. Donald F. Duncan knew a good thing when he saw it and purchased the business from Flores just one year later, and the “Duncan Yo-Yo” was born.
Barbie The Barbie doll is, unsurprisingly, the best-selling toy of all time with over a billion dolls sold since she made her debut in 1959. With more than 180 careers, 40 nationalities, and hundreds, even thousands, of exclusive fashionable outfits, the Barbie doll has been a toy icon for millions of little girls for the past 50 years.

Part of the reason for this is Barbie’s adaptability. Mattel, the toy company that owns Barbie, has allowed the doll to evolve as times have changed, releasing Barbie Presidential candidates, Barbie business executives and Barbie computer engineers. Perhaps most notably, in 2016 Mattel introduced three new body types - tall, petite, and curvy and added a variety of skin tones to better reflect the world that girls see around them.

Slinky The Slinky came to life on a battleship during World War II in Philadelphia’s Cramp Shipyard. A torsion spring used in a testing meter fell off a marine engineer’s desk and tumbled end over end across the floor, creating a fad that continues sixty years later. With more than 300 million Slinkys sold, the walking spring is still marching strong. The Easy-Bake Oven This famous toy working oven has been beloved by children since 1963, when it was first introduced to the public. al different incarnations throughout the decades. The first model featured a tiny stovetop in addition to the oven and used a regular incandescent light bulb for heat. Later models recalled the kitchen styles of the times: the 1971 Easy-Bake Oven was an avocado green and faux wood creation. The Easy-Bake Oven of today is almost space-age in its design. It’s sleek, curvy, and now comes in two gender-neutral color schemes. Silly Putty The creation of this incredibly popular toy was a lucky accident for its inventor James Wright. Wright was an inventor who worked at Gen-
eral Electric in New Haven, Conn. and discovered that combining boric acid with silicone oil created a putty with unusual properties. It’s a “liquid solid: If it’s dropped, it bounces, but if struck with a great deal of force, it shatters. Silly Putty also floats and will even form a puddle if left alone for a long enough time. The toy was originally sold in 1950 for $1, and that’s still what an egg of the stuff will cost you today. Mr. Potato Head The birth of Mr. Potato Head came in a Brooklyn garden, where an inventor used to take potatoes and add grapes for eyes, and carrots for noses to a potato. When Mr. Potato Head debuted in stores in 1952,
it was the very first toy to have a commercial on television – and was the first to be directly aimed at children. The toy made $4 million in the first year and has gone on to be a best-seller for all time. Nerf Balls Some sources claim that “ NERF” is an acronym for “Non-Expanding Recreational Foam,” but that story seems too good to be true. Parker Brothers says they named the squishy balls after the foam that off-road drivers use to wrap their roll-bars, and in 1969 they proclaimed the polyurethane foam as “the world’s first indoor ball.” Since then, more than 300 million balls have been sold.

ope you all had a wonderful Poinsettia Day! Oh wait, you missed it? It’s the one holiday that hasn’t really caught on with Hallmark. December 12th honors the memory of Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister (ambassador) to Mexico. In 1825, he sent cuttings of Poinsettias, then known as, Flor de Noche Buena, meaning, Flower of the Holy Night, or Christmas Eve flower, from Mexico to his home in South Carolina. Today, Poinsettias are always associated with Christmastime. Other beautiful Christmas bloomers include cyclamen and, of course, Christmas cactus. Consider it an international Christmas, since all of these flowers originated from other countries. Though we think of Poinsettias when it’s cold and blustery outside, they actually require warm temperatures. Our snuggly homes normally kept between 65-70 degrees provide the perfect conditions for Poinsettias,
but keep them away from cold drafts or excessive heat. They can last year-round but need to be in total darkness at night starting in fall to regain their red color. Be sure to water sparingly as they hate wet, soggy roots. Poinsettias get a bad rap for being poisonous. They aren’t quite as toxic as all the hype, but I keep mine away from pets and young children just in case. Recently, a new little darling has come on the scene. Princettia ® is a relatively new Poinsettia that is a compact cousin of the flower we know. Its dainty leaves (bracts) make it a real charmer. Christmas cactus (as the name im-
plies) also blooms this time of year; its exotic flowers, though unique, remind me of the flowers of fuschia. Although it’s called a cactus, it isn’t found in the arid desert, but is a native of the coastal mountains of Brazil. This tropical plant needs humid conditions to thrive, and benefits from a frequent misting. Like the Poinsettia, it needs to be well-drained and can’t have soggy roots. Some Christmas cacti have been known to live for 20-30 years. The most common question people have about them is, “how do I get my Christmas cactus to rebloom?” Keep in mind, that most plants sold as Christmas cactus are actually Thanksgiving cactus. I won’t bog you down with their Latin names, but they are a different variety, though the growing conditions are the same. Like many of us, after the holidays (and after blooming) Christmas cactus need a rest. To rebloom, they need 12-14 hours of complete darkness each night. Bright indirect light during the day is fine. Move them to a cooler area of
your house (ideally 50-65 degrees) and water them less frequently. Instead of misting them, allow the top of the soil to dry out a bit. They require these conditions for about eight weeks. Gradually, you should see new buds forming at the tips of the segmented hanging stems. Once the cactus starts forming its flower buds, move it back to the sunny spot it enjoyed the previous year. The idea is to give them a period of dormancy before blooming at Christmastime. I think I would certainly bloom better at Christmas if I had some downtime first!

Another beautiful holiday bloomer is cyclamen. It echoes some of the same colors of Christmas cactus and Poinsettias, coming in shades of red, pink, purple, and white. Cyclamen prefer temperatures on the cooler side. Choose the coolest room in your house. If kept in a location that’s too warm, it may go into dormancy. It’s wonderful that, even in the chill of winter, we can enjoy such beautiful blooms in our homes. Cyclamen have attractive rounded or heart-shaped leaves, often with white or silver variegation. Its blooms can last up to three months--definitely worth the money, even if you treat it as an annual. Like the Poinsettias and Christmas cacti, cyclamen must avoid drafts or extreme heat, and will die from overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out to the touch. Water well about once a week, and make sure it has good drainage. Water from below the flowers and leaves, as the plant will rot if the crown, or center of the plant, remains too wet. After its lengthy bloom time, and as warmer temperatures approach, cyclamen will go into dormancy, almost looking dead. Place them in a cool, dark spot and they should revive as the holidays approach next year. All of these flowers make a statement and really brighten up your home during the holidays. cones, and Christmas balls between the flowers. They make wonderful gifts, especially as hostess gifts or for the hard-to-buy-for friend. You don’t need a green thumb to keep these beauties going.
