N

ovember has so much to offer.

The colors of the leaves and the crunching of them underfoot along with the crisp air is a delight. There is nothing quite like grabbing a cozy blanket and hot drink while sitting outdoors in late Autumn.

Two of the most important holidays, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving, are in November. I can't think of any holiday that is more deserving of our utmost attention and respect than Veterans Day. Every day we enjoy freedom and safety that our troops have laid their lives on the line for. Our Veterans have seen and experienced things that are unfathomable to many of us. Physically and emotionally, our Veterans and their families sacrifice. It is their bravery that allows us to live in the land of the free.

When our veterans come home, many of them have what to us, may be invisible challenges, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or Traumatic Brain Injury

(TBI). This can change their lives forever and make day to day life difficult, if not impossible.

The rate of suicide among veterans is more than twice the national average. Veterans account for seven out of every ten suicides nationally. This tells us loud and clear, that we must do more to support our soldiers both when they are on active duty and when they come home. Our freedom comes at a high cost not only to the troops but also to their families at home.

Mainland Cheerleaders brings crowd to its feet during Eagles half-time performance

ainland High School Cheerleading was invited to perform with the Eagles Cheerleaders during the Bears/Eagles game last Sunday, November 3rd. The group of young ladies were contacted over the summer about doing the routine but were only green lighted to do it one month prior. The team worked diligently with a videotaped instructional provided by Eagles Cheerleading. They practiced with the Eagles Squad only twice and then, just minutes before, in the tunnel as they approached Lincoln Financial Field.

Tiffany Unsworth, Mainland Cheerleading Coach and a teacher at Mainland High School, noted that “Even the Eagles choreographer said the girls were right up there with the

professional NFL cheerleaders. They put them front and center.”

Unsworth would know. She and Jessica Gonzalez (also a Mainland Cheerleading Coach) were both Eagles Cheerleaders in the past. They have brought their professional experience and a passion for cheering to the squad. And according to the fans' reaction, it showed.

“This year, the girls have participated in a NFL Half Time and at Rutgers Spirit Day (collegiate experience). We are looking to provide them with a well rounded experience,” explains Unsworth. While

none of the current Mainland senior cheerleaders have said that they were going to work for the NFL, two young ladies, Kelley Walsh and Olivia McGhee, have become All-American (UCA) cheerleaders.

This gives them the opportunity to work for UCA camps in the summer, along with a part-time job during the school year.

Giving Back This Season : A Family Affair

o sooner had I taken down our Halloween decorations and our mailbox was overflowing with holiday catalogues. My twins managed to get hold of the Target catalogue and each child, in separate colors, circled everything they wanted. And I mean everything. We get hit with a bit of a double whammy as their birthday is right before Thanksgiving. I always try to impress upon my kids the need to give back and at this time of year when they are so focused on making their wish lists, it seems even more important. Here are some ways that we give back to others as a family which I hope has a lasting impact on my children.

A few weeks ago my daughter announced at dinner that she was starting something called the Arctic Project. She went on to explain that she was setting up a jar in the kitchen and each time someone left a room for more than 10 seconds without turning out the light, they would need to add 25 cents to the jar. As a family we would agree on where to donate the money. Once we reached $15 we would make our donation. We had recently dropped off some blankets

and dog food to the Humane Society of Ocean City and after visiting with the dogs and cats, my kids were committed to making our Arctic Project donation there. We went as a family to drop off the donation in the donation kiosk they have set up in the lobby. I was extremely proud of my daughter for coming up with the idea and felt good about where we were making the donation. Another easy yet meaningful way to give back this holiday season is to fill a bag for Jewish Family Services in Margate. As part of the JFS

As we don’t eat meat, I always donate ours to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey, located in Egg Harbor Township. For the past few years I have put the word out on social media that if people are not going to use their free turkey, I would collect them at my house and drop them all off together. The kids and I make a trip the food bank a week before Thanksgiving to drop sometimes up to 20 turkeys. The kids have a good understanding that what we are doing helps feed people.

Smokey Robinson...Motown at it's finest "It doesn't get any better"

oncert goers of all ages filled Ovation Hall at Ocean Resort Casino Friday night, November 1, 2019. Fans from all over came to be with Smokey Robinson, minus The Miracles.

Called “America’s greatest living poet” by singer Bob Dylan, Smokey Robinson brought his familiar soul and Motown sounds to Atlantic City once again to the joy of the excited crowd which included fans from age eight to eighty.

The show opened with Robinson, looking as if he just stepped out of a fashion magazine, adorned in a white suit with a purple tie and pocket hankie and began to sing, as the multi-generational audience went wild.

Robinson wasted no time bringing back the sounds that have become

so familiar to music fans around the world when he belted out, “I Second That Emotion.” By the time he finished his song, the swooning and the cheers began to elevate.

The quality of his unmistakable sound, the ability to hit the falsetto notes and his smooth at ease style on stage, made the evening a pleasure to watch as well as hear and enjoy.

Taking the audience on a Motown trip, Robinson performed, “Really Got A Hold On Me,” “Being With You,” and “Ohh Baby Baby,” which elicited screams of “Sing it Smokey!” from a fan in the rear of the showroom.

Robinson set the tone for the evening when he told his ardent fans, “We came to have fun and to have a good time, to be intimate, to touch and get to know each other better,” causing more applause from Robinson’s admirers.

Robinson was born February 19, 1940 in Detroit and began his career in the late 1950’s when he met Motown founder Barry Gordy, Jr. Robinson, as a member of The Miracles, released a number of singles with one of them, “Shop

The promise became evident as The Miracles, with Smokey Robinson as lead had twenty-five Top 40 hits.

In addition to Robinson’s singing, he became one of the most sought after songwriters at Motown, writing hits for Mary Wells and The Temptations.

Robinson reflects very fondly on his days at Motown. “I am pleased to tell you I had the pleasure of growing

up in Motown, what a wonderful place.

I would not trade my time there or my life for anything...I have been so lucky.”

Smokey Robinson married the Miracles lead female singer, Claudette Rogers in 1964 and stopped touring with the group even though he continued to sing on their recordings, finally leaving the group in 1972.

His best known albums were, “Quiet Storm,” (1975 and “Being With You”1981). Smokey Robinson has retained all of the attributes that made him so popular from the start.

He is warm, friendly, and comfortable on stage. He still sounds like he did 35 years ago with a rich voice and a charming manner.

For anyone who wants to spend an evening hearing wonderful music, have lasting memories and a soulful filled evening, make sure you catch Smokey Robinson the next time he is in Atlantic City, you won’t regret it.

The World War II Lookout Tower is New Jersey’s last remaining restorable World War II tower, part of the immense Harbor Defense of the Delaware system that played a major part in coastal defenses. Discover the new Atlantic County Veterans Museum

T

he Atlantic County Veterans Museum will extend its normal hours of operation to be open on Monday, November 11, 10 AM – 4 PM, in observance of Veterans Day. The museum includes military artifacts and personal donations from the Revolutionary War through modern day, most of which has been collected from Atlantic County veterans and their families.

The Atlantic County Veterans Mu-

seum is located at 189 Route 50 South, Estell Manor, in the historic Daniel Estell House, adjacent to the Atlantic County Park and the Atlantic County Veterans Ceme-

tery.

The building is the former home of Rebecca Estell Bourgeois Winston, the first mayor of Estell Manor and the first female mayor in New Jersey. It was built in 1832 by Winston's grandfather and remodeled in the 1920s to Colonial Revival style. Atlantic County purchased the house in 1993 and recently rehabilitated it to provide a museum to serve as a

Hometown Hero: Robert Frolow

D

rafted to serve in the United States Army in 1968, Robert Frolow served in the 9th Infantry, 39th Cavalry.

As an armor scout, he crawled on his belly through tall grasses for night ambush patrols in Cambodia. He would later learn that those grasses were laden with chemicals that resulted in long term effects, ultimately confining Frolow to a wheelchair.

Despite his dramatic changes in his life, Frolow has continued to serve his country with great pride. Today Frolow is the Director of Veterans Services for Atlantic County, a position he has held for the past 18 years.

Frolow helps veterans understand the benefits that are available to them, assists with the application process and, if needed, assists with appeals and hearings.

Frolow works closely with other veteran and human services agencies and is the county's primary contact point for veteran issues. He provides assistance, referrals and case management services to military veterans and their family members regarding their legal rights and eligibility for services and service-related benefits.

The Veterans Services Office is located at 201 South Shore Road in Northfield and is at the VA Clinic on Wednesdays to help provide "one stop" shopping for veterans and their families. The appeals and hearings also take place on site. Veterans no longer have to attend hearings or drive long distances to appeal a de-

"The pleasure I receive in this job is when I am able to help someone get the treatment and care they need," shares Frolow. "Sometimes it takes perseverance. You may get a couple negative responses before you get an approval. Our job is to help veterans understand and receive the benefits available to them, including long term care for families."

Recently, the Veterans Affairs of Atlantic County celebrated the opening of the Veterans Wing at Meadowview Nursing Home.

The center was awarded a fiveyear agreement with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide medical services as well as provide

health care solutions for veterans in Atlantic County.

Meadowview has previously offered veterans services but can now provide them with coverage from the VA. Prior to that, veterans had to take long, grueling bus trips out of state in order to obtain care that would be covered by the VA. The expansions were much needed and closed gaps in health care services for veterans In Atlantic County.

Fro l ow also serves on the Veterans Advisory Board for the County, AM Vets 911, VFW lifetime member and honorary member of Submariners.

Additionally he is the Commander of the Somers Point Legion.

A Story From An Active Duty Army Veteran Family

T

he phone rang in the middle of my Company Hip Hop Class. I ran to the phone and smiled at the bizarre, out of country phone number on the screen.

“You know the drill, girls!” I said to my class. And they did. One of my students ran up and grabbed my 3 month old baby boy out of my arms, as the rest of the class began reviewing choreography on their own. I grabbed my phone and ran outside to hear the sweet voice of my husband, who was deployed to Afghanistan.

“I’m frustrated, Baby. They said we weren’t supposed to go on any more missions., but I have to go out on yet another mission, so I’ll talk to you tomorrow or the next day when I get back, okay?”

But he didn’t call the next day. Or

the day after. In fact, he didn’t call for nine long, excruciating days. Andrew was a 13-Fox (a forward observer) for the prestigious 101st Airborne Division, 2-327th infantry, also known as “No Slack”. He went out with the infantrymen and called in fire when his unit was under attack. He was incredibly proud to be an Army Combat Soldier.

But he had been gone for almost a year on one of the deadliest deployments that No Slack had ever experienced.

Morale was down for the entire unit, but they were set to return home in 3 weeks.

Andrew & his unit had gone out on Operation Strong Eagle III, which was a mission designed to take down QZR, who was one of the most dangerous Taliban leaders in Afghanistan, beheading elders of villages to instill fear and control over their people, and ruthlessly attacking the American Forces who were trying to protect them. In order to conquer QZR, they had to descend into the deep dark valley of Kunar Province. In the middle of the night on March 29, 2011, they were dropped onto the top of a mountain and began their descent. What they

didn’t realize, was that they were descending into the hornet’s nest.

Over the next nine days, the unit was under fierce attack. They were completely surrounded from above.

Andrew Sciarretta They were shot at and bombed constantly. Even the medevacs were viciously attacked. There seemed to be no way out. They came under such extreme fire, that two eye-opening documentaries were made about them. “The Hornet’s Nest”, created by ABC’s Michael Boettcher, detailed the mission. “No Greater Love”, created by No Slack’s Chaplain, Justin Roberts, beautifully showcased the bond between Army Brothers and the unit’s struggle during that deployment and back on American soil after the mission was over.

Back at home, I couldn’t sleep. I could barely eat. It seemed like every day, I was getting another call from the FRG (Family Readiness Group), telling me that my solider was okay, but that we had lost yet another brother. Someone’s Daddy. Someone’s Husband.

Someone’s Son. Every time I heard a knock at the door, my heart stopped and I held my breath, waiting to see two soldiers at my door, caps off, telling me that they’d lost him in the dust of Afghanistan. I would wake up from a dead sleep hearing door knocks in my dreams. It was the absolute worst time of my life, as a wife. What would my life look like without him? We weren’t even married for 2 years. We had a 3 month old baby. We had bought out first home. We had these dreams, and these plans, and these ideals. They would be gone in an instant. I ached for him. What did I get us into? If only I had been against him going into the Army.

He’d have listened to me. He loved me

so deeply. What have I done? This is all my fault, and now I may lose him.

His infant son, my sweet mother and sister-in-law, and my incredibly loving father-in-law. We may all lose him.

We didn’t lose him. But we did lose Sgt. 1st Class Ofren Arrechaga, 28, Staff Sgt. Frank E. Adamski III, 26, Spc. Jameson L. Lindskog, 23, Staff Sgt. Bryan A. Burgess, 29, Spc. Dustin J. Feldhaus, 20, and Pvt. Jeremy P. Faulkner, 23. The 101st lost 131 Brothers during that deployment. Many others were horribly injured. Still many (if not most) others suffered and still suffer deep emotional wounds. A few committed suicide after returning, because the pain and memories were unbearable. Countless soldiers sought PTSD therapy.

It has been almost 8 years since that deployment. My husband carries those brothers of his on his wrist and in his heart every day. He is planning a tattoo memorial on his body to honor them. Sometimes he gets very emotional, thinking of that time and his Brothers. Even writing about those men, that deployment, and that time… the tears are falling onto my keyboard.

We are absolutely broken for those we lost.

The wounds that our Veterans and their families suffer run deep. Perhaps, they run deeper than you can ever imagine. Just because you can’t imagine the pain, doesn’t mean you can’t do anything. This Veteran’s Day, I would like to challenge you to not just write a Veteran’s Day post on social media, but to do something. Find a military family and meet a need for them. Let your heart lead you. I promise you will come up with something. Whether you agree with the war or not, our soldiers and their families are suffering. You can be the blessing that brings even a tiny ounce of healing to their hearts.

Foods Fight Depression

eople all over the world cope with depression. Depression is more than just feeling sad, it’s a mood disorder that persists and interferes with everyday functioning. 1 in 6 adults will struggle with depression at some point in their life. While many have suffered from what we think is depression at some point in our lives, others having been coping with it for years. Luckily, there are some small things you can do to help manage your depression and keep you on the track to happiness. On to the food! You may not know it, but the foods you eat could be affecting your state of depression. There are foods that help and hurt depression sufferers. Diet isn’t for just losing weight.

Let’s start with carbohydrates. Not all carbohydrates will boast positive results when used to help manage depression, but “smart carbs” will. Carbohydrates are linked to strong levels of serotonin which will help boost your mood. Carb cravings could be linked to low serotonin activity. The source also advises limiting sugary food intake and quenching your carb desires by eating smart carbs like legumes , fruits ,vegetables and whole grains .

My favorite supplement, Vitamin C, isn’t just used for warding off colds. It’s also proven to be effective in coping with depression as well. Vitamin C, like carbohydrates, plays a key role in the production of serotonin. If you’re looking to increase your Vitamin C intake, consider eating foods such as spinach, oranges, grapefruits and peas.

Low levels of vitamin E have been linked to anxiety and depression. This vitamin is an antioxidant which boasts many great health

benefits. If you’re looking to boost your mood through vitamin E, try eating chickpeas, oats, egg yolks, seeds and nuts. Also, try cooking with canola oil or other healthy oils for added benefits.

It’s been proven the likeliness of suffering from depression was greatly increased in individuals with a vitamin D deficiency. A non-related study showed that an increased level of vitamin D (to a certain extent) led to a decreased level of depression symptoms.

While you can get vitamin D from the sun, it’s also important to consume it through diet by eating fish, tofu and milk .

Omega-3 fatty acids provide endless health benefits. When it comes to depression, it’s been revealed recently that low levels of omega-3 in your diet can be associated with depression. Eating just a small amount of these acids can have a positive effect on your state of mind. To increase omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, eat more fatty fish, flaxseeds, nuts, canola oil, walnuts and dark green leafy vegetables.

With all the plant based diet rage, so many people aren’t understanding how to incorporate protein in the amounts needed. Foods rich in protein are also rich in an amino acid called tryptophan which might assist in the production of serotonin. Tyrosine has been proven to help boost levels of dopamine and norepinephrine – brain chemicals that help you feel alert and energetic. To reap the benefits, simply add more beans, peas, lean beef, milk, poultry, yogurt and fish to your diet.

Whole grains are made up of plenty of healthy nutrients. They are high in fiber, vitamins and amino acids and have been proven to help boost your mood and beat your depression. If you’re looking to increase your whole grain intake, consider adding brown rice, whole grain cereal, whole wheat pasta and whole grain breads to your diet.

The most important nutrient of them all, drinking lots of water, is a great way to

alleviate depression and anxiety. It’s the most important element when it comes to boosting your mood. You see, when your body is dehydrated, your body suffers in several ways. In order to reap the benefits, you must drink actual water. Substituting water for other beverages like coffee, tea, juices and sodas are not water or a substitute for water .

There are plenty of reasons to eat your greens, but just in case you needed one more, greens that are a part of what’s known as the “G-BOMBS” (greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries, and seeds), not only fight cancer and boost immunity, but they also have the ability to fight inflammation. So what’s all that have to do with depression?

It’s been found that severe depression is linked with brain inflammation. This means that leafy greens like spinach, kale, and Swiss chard, also have the ability to ward off depression. Leafy greens are especially important because they contain oodles of vitamins A, C, E, and K, minerals, and phytochemicals.

Water isn’t the only beneficial beverage on this list — green tea is also one of the best foods to fight depression. While green tea is known to be a great source of antioxidants it’s “depression-fighting properties can be traced to an amino acid known as theanine.

There’s a reason we associate a warm cup of tea with relaxation, green tea is a natural stress reliever. “Theanine is an ami-

no acid naturally found in tea leaves that provides an anti-stress relaxation benefit to tea drinkers. The presence of theanine in green tea is thought to be responsible for the observation that caffeine intake in coffee drinkers (who aren’t getting theanine) is more apt to result in tension as opposed to the ‘relaxed alertness’ more common to tea drinkers.

Many people turn to drinking as a way to self-medicate, but the irony is that alcohol is a depressant – so while you may feel good for a short period of time, you’re not doing yourself any favors in the long-term.

33-percent of people with major depression also have an alcohol problem (although to be fair, it also says the depression often shows up first). However, alcohol will do nothing to cover over your feelings of sadness and hopelessness – it will only make them worse.

Also, drinking can make your antidepressant medications less effective, adds the source.

New Jersey League of Conservation Voters Honor State Senator Chris Brown

he New Jersey League of Conservation Voters (New Jersey LCV), the statewide watchdog and voice for the environment, awarded State Senator Chris Brown (LD-2) with its Emerald Award at its Fifth Annual Green Tie Gala for his record of strong support for the environment: The Emerald Award recognizes legislators for their outstanding contributions to conserving New Jersey's natural resources and protecting public health. Senator Brown was one of only two legislators out of 120 members of the Senate and General Assembly chosen for this award.

“Senator Chris Brown has shown his commitment to our environment by consistently standing up for water, land, and air protections – even when some of his colleagues wouldn’t,” said New Jersey League of Conservation Voters Executive

I

t is sadly becoming increasingly more difficult to find people serving in public office to look up to and admire. They somewhere along the way fail to live up to our expectations and we are left disillusioned. I was reminded of that this past week not because another political figure let me down but rather because we lost a public servant who embodied just the opposite.

This past week I was saddened to hear that former Second District Congressman and Ambassador William Hughes passed away. Although he had long since given up his role in public service, the mark he left here in Southern New Jersey will be felt for years to come. Bill Hughes first went to Washington in 1975 during a turbulent time in American politics. In fact, he defeated popular incumbent GOP Congressman Charles Sandman who’s staunch support of President Nixon cost him the election. Hughes, a Democrat would retain his seat in Congress for twenty years winning time after time in strong Republican districts. The reason?

of New Jersey’s Second Congressional District as his top priority.

In my many years of covering politics and politicians there was something different about Representative Hughes. The way he spoke, the sincerity and conviction he exhibited stood apart from many of the other I came across.

In the days since his passing, I’ve read so many tributes written about this mans character, his love of country and his strong commitment to his family.

One memory I have of the Congressman is one I’ve shared several times over the years with people. As a reporter for NBC40, I traveled to DC to interview Rep. Hughes just before his retirement. We spent the day on Capital Hill as he reflected on his years in Congress. We talked about what he accomplished, any regrets he had, feelings on giving it all up. As we walked the halls of Congress I asked him what valuable things he learned while serving. I will never forget his response. He told me he learned above all else that it wasn’t all about him.

That there were 434 other members with hopes and dreams, mandates and issues they wanted addressed on behalf of their constituents. He said

early on he learned the art of compromise. That sometimes he had to give up something he wanted in exchange for a fellow member to get what they wanted in exchange for help from that colleague later on regarding another issue.

He said he learned how to work with others on both sides of the aisle. He learned the art of compromise not on principles and conviction. He stressed that. But learned to work with others for the good of the country.

Gracious, kind, principled and decent. Sadly, his character and integrity is hard to find in today’s political climate on both sides of the aisle. We would do well to follow the example this true statesman left us. My condolences to the Congressman’s family.

Dealing with Diabetes

ast month, I went to London to celebrate my brother’s 50th birthday. Watching an English Premier League match at Tottenham’s new stadium was by far the highlight of the trip. Unfortunately, there was another moment which has stayed at the forefront of my memory ever since.

Two of my brothers who went with me are diabetics. We were all having a great time, when suddenly my one brother started acting odd, and soon was fading in and out of consciousness as a result of his blood sugar dropping to 34. It was a scary moment for sure.

Luckily, my other brother knew what to do and after 30 minutes and four Cokes later, things returned to normal.

This episode brought the reality of diabetes front and center for me. The truth is that not many people understand diabetes. A HUGE misconception

exists that people living with diabetes “get themselves there” or deserve the challenges of diabetes because being diagnosed with the disease is entirely their fault. Even some people living with diabetes feel ashamed and embarrassed for having the disease.

There are two different kinds of diabetes, type 1 and type 2, and they are significantly different. Type 1 diabetes, or T1D is an auto-immune disease where the pancreas produces little or no insulin. Insulin is needed to keep our blood sugars regulated. For those of us without diabetes, our pancreas releases insulin to regulate our blood sugar, this is especially important when we tax our bodies with exercise, stress or other environmental or emotional stimuli. For those with T1D, they need to manually control their blood sugars by giving themselves insulin, either from shots, an insulin pump that they wear on their bodies or food. With T1D, every minute of the day is a math equation, figuring out what to eat, how much insulin to take and how to plan for the hours ahead, 24 hours a day. Doing everyday tasks like exercising, teaching, taking care of kids and stressing out a little can quickly become situations where blood sugars can go dangerously low. T1D can be diagnosed at any age, with little known

If someone in your family has type 2 diabetes, the chances of you being diagnosed is greatly increased. Though lifestyle decisions can contribute to a type 2 diagnosis, we are learning that genetics plays a very large role. While type 2 can be managed with diet and exercise, in many cases, people with type 2 also become insulin dependent and must manually give themselves insulin as well.

ACUA to Host Open House Event for America Recycles Day

O

n Saturday, November 16, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) will host an Open House in honor of America Recycles Day at the Recycling Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. for residents to enjoy free activities and learn what happens to recycling after it is picked up at the curb.

Guests can explore the Atlantic County recycling sorting facility during behind-the-scenes tours. The tours give a first-hand look into how materials are sorted and prepared to be recycled into new products. Outside, kids will have the chance to climb into one of ACUA’s very own collection vehicles. The event will also feature crafts, games and an appearance by ACUA’s mascot, Supercan. Adults in attendance can enter to win a 96-gallon recycling cart.

“Recycling is an easy way for everyone to reduce waste and improve their environmental impact,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey. “Our open house will help residents understand their role in the process and why it is important to recycle correctly.”

In addition, residents will have the opportunity to recycle bikes, portable sewing machines and plastic toys through two New Jersey non-prof-

its, Pedals for Progress and Second Chance Toys. Pedals for Progress will distribute bicycles and portable sewing machines to poor working adults in developing countries to create opportunities for people in need. These items require a $10 donation to cover the cost of shipping. Second Chance Toys will accept clean plastic toys that have no missing parts and donate them to local children in need with help from the Atlantic Cape Family Support Organization.

America Recycles Day is a national initiative of Keep America Beautiful.

It is the only nationally recognized day and coast-to-coast community-driven awareness campaign dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. This will be ACUA’s 7th Annual Open House.

GPS NJ South 07’ Girls Soccer wins two time State Cup Championship

he Global Premier (GPS) 07' Girls Soccer team won the New Jersey State Cup Final Saturday, November 3rd in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. The team of 16 girls ages 11-12 years old, will now be advancing to the Regionals in West Virginia.

Global Premier Soccer (GPS) ‘07 is a competitive travel soccer program.

The players are from both Atlantic and Cape May Counties. The teams practice three times per week under the direction of Leon Brown, who also led them to their first State Cup Championship last year.

"It feels surreal," describes Brown.

“Last year was a great honor winning the New Jersey State Cup. This year, the players set themselves a goal to repeat this feat. The girls achieved

that goal and learned that with dedication and hard work, results will follow."

Chelsea-Wide Open House to Highlight Great Real Estate Deals and Grants

ver twenty properties will be available to tour in the Chelsea neighborhood in Atlantic City during a Neighborhood-Wide Open House on Saturday, November 16th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The list of homes, including a map of the properties color coded by price range, can be found on

www.Chelsea-EDC.org. New homes are being added daily.

There will be information at each of the homes regarding the down payment assistance and first time homebuyer programs available if you buy a home in Atlantic City. The State’s program allows income levels up to $140,000 per household,

offering $10,000 to buy in most areas of Atlantic City. The County’s program offers up to $30,000, due when the new buyer sells. These programs can make the difference in getting home buyers to qualify for the home they want, and could even make home ownership less costly than renting.

Starting at 10:30 a.m. on the 16th, printed maps and refreshments will be available the parking lot at Hartford Avenue and the beach (address is 3701 Boardwalk).

The neighborhood wide open house is a collaboration of the newly formed Chelsea Economic Development Corporation, along with local realtors and major neighborhood institutions Stockton University, South Jersey Gas, AtlantiCare and ACDevco.

The goal is to change people’s perception by showing all that Chelsea has to offer, including attractive real estate deals. Over the summer, employees of Stockton, SJ Gas and AtlantiCare expressed interest and have been taking steps to learn about the housing choices in Chelsea. The Open House is another effort to encourage home buying for those that work in the neighborhood and the City. Just as important is the goal to transform City renters in home owners, a strategy that has proven to change neighborhoods by providing more stability to the neighborhood and wealth to its residents.

ACDevco President Chris Paladino, is witnessing how an increased population and home ownership is transforming New Brunswick to include more restaurants and nightlife, including Devco’s new $200 million Performing Arts Center. Paladino stated “we support the efforts by the Chelsea EDC, which will continue to spark energy and excitement into the Chelsea neighborhood by leveraging ACDevco’s Gateway project opened in 2018.”

Participants may independently visit any or all of the open houses.

Filthy Campaigns Have Broken Our Election Process

ow that the 2019 General Election is behind us, it's time for some sobering ref lec tion and soul searching going forward.

The entire election process in our region is broken.

The campaign tactics have disintegrated to new lows and are getting worse with each passing election cycle. What good people will ever want to put their name on the ballot in the future? To do so, you risk having your entire life being destroyed.

Blatant lies and thin represen-

tations masquerade as the truth.

Candidates no longer tell us what they will do if they are elected.

Instead, they spend many thousands of dollars destroying the character of their opponent.

The political contests were disgusting by any standard of measure. In Legislative District 1, the Republican candidates Michael Testa, Jr., Erik Simonsen and Antwan McClellan were savaged by some of the most racist, ethnic and despicable tactics ever employed.

Testa was the victim of blatant ethnic prejudice and vicious character assassination. Testa was smeared both personally and professionally. Even Testa's legendary Father, Michael Testa, Sr. was unnecessarily attacked during this filthy dirty campaign season. It should be completely out of bounds to attack family members.

tacked and the victim of a racist attack, so filthy in nature that Governor Phil Murphy and Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver condemned their fellow Democrats for waging this unconscionable tactic.

In a Democrat mailer, they blackened McClellan's face darker and placed him in an outrageous "Aunt Jemima" silhouette. Sadly, not a single NAACP Chapter condemned the campaign flier, simply in order to protect their fellow Democrats.

So, you can now easily see, that even though this is such a racially sensitive moment in all of American history, that Democrat politics came before people doing the right thing, even the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People failed the test.

This is undeniably representative of our present state of politics in our region and in America.

When McClellan was racially attacked, every person of good faith should have risen and condemned those responsible. Almost no one did.

In District 2, Atlantic County Freeholder John Risley and former Brigantine Mayor Phil Guenther were also eviscerated. The lies and half truths were stunning.

They were viciously attacked with seven figures worth of poison vitriol.

Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson was repeatedly called a racist. The relentless attack was that he led a culture of "Systemic Racism" within Atlantic County government.

This is one of the most blatantly dishonest political attacks ever made in an Atlantic County election. The charge was patently false, yet an unscrupulous Democrat repeated it again and again and again.

Once again, the NAACP refused to denounce it, because they chose instead to protect a fellow Democrat politician, instead of representing all of the ideals that their organization professes to support.

There were no profiles in courage to award during this filthy election season. And, sadly, I believe that absolutely no lessons will have been learned.

Unless something dramatic

occurs, that I don't see happening any time soon, the elections will continue to spiral to even lower levels going forward.

The worst thing has happened over the past 20 years. These contemptible campaign tactics have actually been rewarded with success on election day. Why would the candidates of tomorrow stop doing what has worked time-and-time again?

The short answer is, they won't. Not only should you readily expect this to continue, it's actually going to get worse and worse.

Just like bad reality television that you can't take your eyes off; The prevaricators must keep making more and more shocking pronouncements to keep the attention span of the viewer.

The worst allegations typically come from thinly disguised outside groups, who maintain that they are not working directly with any candidate.

This was the case in Southern New Jersey this year, with the exception of Susan Korngut who directly made the (specious) incendiary racial allegations against Levinson. It was perhaps the dirtiest and most mean-spirited attack ever made in our region's political history. In a macabre sort of way, at least Korngut owned it and didn't hide behind a Political Action Committee advertisement to do her dirty work. This should not be misconstrued as compliment, because it's not.

There is only one way that the present climate of politics by destruction will ever change. It all comes down to the electorate.

Some year, if a campaign spends millions of dollars and scorches the earth with their opponent and the electorate rejects them; Then, and only then will this begin to change.

I remain an eternal optimist. I believe that America's best days are still ahead. However, the present atmosphere in our country threatens everything going forward. This manifests itself at so many different levels.

The national media is out-ofcontrol. They are terminal with an incurable case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. It is the driving force of everything that they do.

This permeates every aspect of our society.

Here's a recent case in point.

The incredibly brave and skilled military operation to bring ISIS founder and the World's # 1 Terrorist, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to justice.

Rather then credit our military Special Operations heroes, The Washington Post screaming banner headline read, "Austere Religious Scholar Dies at 48."

This is so sick, that it almost defies gravity. The reason the Jeffrey Bezos-owned Washington Post did this, was because they can't bring themselves to credit President Donald Trump for anything.

Just look back at the credit the national media gave to Barack Obama at the time of the killing of Osama Bin Laden. This despite the fact, that they called Obama from a golf course to watch the killing.

You don't have to believe me about this. Look at the famous photo, with Obama sitting at the end of the table at a chair that sits lower. This is the iconic photo with Hillary Clinton gasping with her hand over her mouth. I think that Obama made this the official White House photo to finish-off Clinton once and for all.

Multiple sources have have confirmed that Obama had not changed out of his golf clothes when he entered to Situation Room. None of this ever stopped the national, pro-Obama media from gushing all over him, practically crediting Obama with firing the kill shot himself.

Ironically, on the top of their newspaper daily masthead (slo-

gan) reads: "The Washington Post, Democracy Dies in Darkness."

Until President Trump, the newspaper had not had a slogan in its 142-year existence. Bob Woodward actually coined this phrase more than 45 years ago.

This is the degree the Democrats will go to discredit Republicans and especially President Trump. Make no mistake about it, the media is largely responsible for many of America's current problems.

Only the inherent power of the people can change this. It must happen, before it's too late.

y the time you read this, we officially have “FALL-en” back, as Daylight Savings Time means things get dark a little sooner and the leaves have turned. When I was a kid, I loved the “fall back” part of the equation, and hated the “spring forward” part. Now, as an adult, I’m actually having trouble adjusting to the “extra” hour as my body still wants to wake up at the same time, but it’s actually an hour earlier!

Where do you stand on this? Do you like Daylight Savings Time? Or should we go the route of Arizona & Hawaii, the two states that don’t observe it…?

Since I last wrote, the Eagles have won two in a row, including maybe their most complete game of the season in Buffalo. The Sixers finally suffered their first loss, but they appear to be one of the more dominant teams in the East. The Flyers have been on another up & down kind of ride early in the season. The Phillies do officially have a new manager and I absolutely LOVE the hire. Lastly, the playoffs are here for area high school football.

From the entertainment world, ABC trotted out “The Little Mermaid Live!” and you’ll have to forgive me for my review. Hopefully the movie “Ford

vs. Ferrari” is better as it features two of my favorites in Christian Bale & Matt Damon. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ●● Did the Eagles save their season in Buffalo? That was the question most Birds fans were a sking when Doug Pederson & company went to upstate NY and beat the Bills 31-to-13 a few weeks back. The Eagles won that game largely by running the football, something that this older guy likes to see. I remember the good old days of the NFC East when every team had a featured running back. I understand the game has gone vertical, and running the football is not as exciting, but gosh darn I think it still wins you games in the NFL. The 218 yards the Birds finished with on the ground, led

by Jordan Howard, was awesome to see. Miles Sanders ripped off a 65-yard touchdown run. The defense came up with four sacks.

A complete effort just one week after there appeared to be division in the locker room. ●● Next, came the 22-14 win over the Bears. The Eagles jumped out to a 19-zip lead before things got interesting (scary) in the 3rd & 4th quarter. This one will be remembered the most though for DeSean Jackson. D-Jax elected to return from the abdominal muscle problem he had that kept him out of the lineup since Week 2. He

lasted four snaps. FOUR…!!! There are folks out there who want to rip the Eagles for how they handled this. And I think to a degree that’s fair. The Birds have not exactly been forthcoming with injury information in the past few seasons.

Remember when Carson Wentz had some soreness in his back that turned into a broken bone?

I feel ultimately though that the blame for this going wrong lies with one person, and that’s DeSean Jackson. He elected NOT to have surgery when he first felt discomfort. He missed almost seven full games. And when he tried to go against the Bears, he completely tore the muscle off the bone and that’s it. This one is big as the Eagles without #10 are a completely different style of offense than WITH him. The Birds have placed him on injured reserve after his surgery; he would be eligible to return to the team during the playoffs, if they make it that far.

My last thought on the Birds is this. They are on a BYE week.

The Patriots are on a BYE week.

New England lost in Baltimore last Sunday night, and I’m not thrilled at the prospect of Bill Belichick having TWO weeks to prepare to shutdown an Eagles offense that hasn’t exactly been clicking on all cylinders. That said, Doug Pederson has TWO weeks as well to try & adjust things. The game is at home on Sunday November 17th, and you know CBS will send their top team of Jim Nantz & Tony Romo to announce that one! The following week, it’s Al Michaels & Cris Collinsworth with the NBC

crew for “Sunday Night Football”.

If the Eagles can win one out of those two games, they have a chance at the playoffs as the rest of the schedule sets up pretty well for them, in my opinion.

Speaking of schedule, as I write this, the Sixers are on a four game road trip that has them in Portland, Phoenix, Utah & Denver. Furkan Korkmaz hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Sixers a 129-128 win over the Trailblazers. The win got the Sixers off to a 5-0 start for the first time since the memorable 2000-01 season where they ended up in the NBA Finals against the Lakers. Of course, they promptly went to Phoenix next, and lost to the Suns to fall to 5-1. But, the Sixers look to be one of the stronger teams in the East, and if they stay healthy, they’re going to be a lot of fun to watch.

There was one trouble aspect of the Sixers loss in Phoenix, and that’s Ben Simmons. Without Joel Embiid, the Suns used Aron Baynes to sag down on Simmons and cut off his driving lanes. That mean Simmons’ only option was to take jumpers, something we all know he is reluctant to do.

Simmons finished the game just 2-8 from the field, and never really took an outside shot. This is troubling because all we heard the entire offseason was that he was going to develop a jumper. I’m not ready to panic on this yet though, since it’s just one game, but clearly the “Ben Simmons Jumper Project” is a work in progress…!

Incomplete is a perfect way to describe the Philadelphia Flyers these days, or also as a “work in progress”. The Fly Guys are only 14 games into the season, and some nights they look like they can beat anybody. Other nights

though, like their embarrassing 7-1 loss in Pittsburgh, they look like a bottom-of-the-standings team, and I can’t stomach that. Travis Konecny seems to be worth all the money they paid him as he’s leading the team with 7 goals and 8 assists for a team high 15 points.

Captain Claude Giroux is not far behind with 11 points (4g, 7a), but we all know the Flyers will only go as far as their goaltending takes them. Thankfully, 21-year-old Carter Hart appears to be coming out of an early season rough patch.

Combine that with 19-year-old Joel Farabee scoring his first NHL goal and things could be looking up for the Orange & Black.

Joe Girardi is the 55th manager in Phillies history. We learned that not long after my last column. I absolutely LOVE the choice. My two takeaways from his initial press conference are that he will bring the discipline that the Phillies sorely need and hopefully he will bring the winning attitude they need as well. I think the players will hustle for Girardi, or at least they will know what the expectations are! Can’t wait to see what Girardi does moving forward, but I also realize he needs some better pitching talent if the Phillies truly are going to be better next season.

It’s playoff time for area high school football. In a perfect example of “only in New Jersey”, the unbeaten Mainland Mustangs beat Ocean City last week 21-6 and now have to face the Red Raiders again THIS week, in a Group IV South first-round playoff game…! This is the most exciting time of the year, but also a little strange too. Only in New Jersey do you have a situation where a team plays its first round playoff game, then plays a traditional Thanksgiving game, then resumes playoff action. Let me make this clear, I really LOVE Thanksgiving high school football, and I don’t want it to ever go away.

However, I always think it’s a risk when an active playoff team plays a Thanksgiving game against a team who is basically playing for

pride.

I’ll close with two tidbits from the entertainment world, as ABC decided to capitalize on their parent company (Disney) owning “The Little Mermaid” rights. They did a “The Little Mermaid Live!” the other night, and other than diehard fans of the movie, I’m not sure it was the “home run” that Disney/ABC was looking for. I love Ariel as much as the next guy, but I think TV viewers are now “tired” of seeing the live musical on TV thing.

At the young age of thirteen, he showed he had the chops to have a long career in Hollywood. Bale plays Ken Miles, a British World War II veteran and a professional race car driver. Damon plays Carroll Shelby, the man who would give Ford their fastest cars. If you like good acting and you like cars; this might be the film for you…!

The Key to living life in HD

hen I was first married, I moved to Clarksville TN, because my husband was part of the 101st Airborne Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. We moved into a little rental townhome in a bad area. But it was brand new construction and had trendy cabinets and stainless appliances! It was $725.00/month. I got on my knees on the builder-grade frise carpet every night and thanked God that I had this sweet little place, and this sweet little dog, and this sweet little life with my new husband. I felt rich. I felt blessed beyond measure.

Eventually, I got to thinking to myself, man, if I could just buy a house, I would be super happy. I got a house that year with a VA home loan, which is ZERO DOLLARS DOWN, and a five hundred dollar escrow deposit.

I bought a house for my signature and five hundred dollars. And it was just as awesome as I expected it to be. I thanked God every day for that house. My mortgage was $1,100.00 per month. I cleaned our first home with such great care. I put my own backsplash up with my husband over a weekend and a bottle of wine. It was so simple. And so was life. Even amidst an intense deployment with an active duty Army husband and tornado warnings almost constantly, life was still so simple.

Two years after purchasing our first home, we moved from Tennessee back home to NJ and bought a bigger, more expensive home.

Somewhere along the way, I got distracted from having a heart full of thankfulness. Are you ready for this? I am about to be completely transparent, but I’m willing to do it, if it means that I can shine the light for even one person. So go ahead, Shore Locals, judge away!

My lawn was the worst on my street.

When I say “the worst”, I mean I would apologize to my neighbors on a regular basis for how awful my lawn was. I began to agonize over having a brown and yellow lawn with “crunchy” grass, instead of soft, vibrant green blades, like the rest of my neighbors.

We tried everything to get our lawn green, but to no avail. It became a focus of discontent for me. Sure, this home was bigger, but the lawn was crunchy!

I sold that home after about two years and bought a beautiful home with a spectacular lawn. Not only did this home have a spectacular lawn, but it had one hundred and twenty thousand dollars worth of landscaping in the backyard. The home was built by a custom home builder, who built it for himself. This guy pulled out all the stops in this yard, but now wanted to move back to his family up North, so I was able to make this backyard oasis mine at an unheard of price.

I remember sitting outside one Fall day in November, on the brazillian wood steps that led to the incredible scene, and it hit me like a ton of bricks: As beautiful as the landscaping was, it didn’t bring any more joy than I had when I lived in the previous home, or back in TN in my very first home, or than I had when I lived in a totally rundown rental apartment in Ocean City

with no air conditioning or heat or dishwasher, and certainly no lawn in sight. Not only that, but I missed home. Real home. Atlantic County home. I felt called to go back there and this amazing landscape couldn’t give me the joy that being close to my family, my people, and the beaches I grew up on could. Here is the lesson you can learn from me this week: I was an idiot! I let freaking crunchy grass become a distraction and get in the way of a heart of total thanksgiving. That is ridiculous.

I believe thankfulness is a paradigm. A way of thinking. A lifestyle.

You have to train your brain to be thankful and correct your course as needed to live ] the thankfulness paradigm, but it is life changing. Every-

thing becomes more vibrant and meaningful.

I am now back home in Atlantic County, in a small, simple backyard. To be honest, I could move into a tiny home on a wooded lot and be just as happy as I am anywhere else. I’ve learned that when I actively seek to be thankful for everything that I have, whether it is a super lush lawn, or a lawn full of crunchy grass, or nothing at all, but the air in your lungs and the song in your heart, life becomes magic in high def. If you’re looking for a way to bring yourself to life, this is a great place to start and November is the best month to begin. Strolling Through the Garden of Good and Evil

s the winds blow, and the days grow shorter and colder, the garden takes on a different tone. Not all is as it seems.

Perhaps it’s time to consider the fine line drawn in the garden between good and evil.

If you dare to enter the garden, you will be greeted by Angel’s Trumpet (Brugmansia), its fragrant bugle-shaped flowers hanging down from above as if to announce your arrival. But keep your guard up as this plant is also known as “Trumpet of Death”. All parts of the plant are poisonous and can be extremely dangerous if ingested. Look down and you will see Datura blooming, which also has showy trumpet flowers and is often referred to as An-

gel’s Trumpet as well; like Brugmansia, all parts of the plant are poisonous.

A fiery red flower catches your eye; its arching stems draw you in. This perennial attracts hummingbirds and butterflies, and has the added benefit of being rabbit and deer resistant. But you may shudder when you read its plant label to find the name is (Crocosmia) Lucifer!

Before you lose heart, stroll over to the roses to learn that not all is scary in the garden as you take in the very fragrant floribunda rose Earth Angel™.

This old-fashioned rose blooms white to soft pink. Or cut a few of the beautiful cup-shaped roses “Heaven on Earth” aptly named for their fragrant and showy flowers in shades of apricot.

A little further into the garden you will find the Iris “Christmas Angel” or Iris “Touched by Angels”, but before you get too comfortable, look out for “Snake’s Head Iris” that is such a deep purple, it almost looks black.

When you leave the garden, check out “Heavenly Bamboo” (Nandina) with its clusters of red berries and leaves that turn maroon in the fall and winter. Don’t

Orchid’s Gone Batty! Miltoniopsis Lillian Nakamoto worry, despite the name, this plant is not related to the invasive bamboo that many homeowners struggle to hold back.

Round the corner and you will find the unusual blooms of Witch Hazel, which provide late fall and winter color and interest with minimal care. Its bright yellow flowers are unique and fragrant.

Some people believe the forked limbs can be used as divining rods for those searching for underground water. And, of course, a trip to the pharmacy reveals the many medicinal properties of Witch Hazel.

This time of year, it’s fun to bring the outdoors in. Pine cones and fall leaves add a homey, seasonal feel to your decor.

But beware the “leaves of three” which are deceivingly colorful, and could be the very inhospitable, poison ivy!

If you try to find safety by staying indoors, beware! For lurking on the shelf is the orchid Miltoniopsis Lillian Nakamoto.

The name itself would be scary enough for any spelling student, but the real fright comes as the orchid blooms and black bats appear on its white petals.

Look away only to find yourself staring at the Snake Plant also known as “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue”. Despite the name, these make excellent houseplants, are easy to care for, and are even known to purify the air in your home.

Angel’s Trumpet (Brugmansia) houseplant, with variegated leaves hanging down making it perfect for a hanging basket. It produces little ”spider babies” at the tips of its leaves that can be cut off and potted to produce new plants.

Now that you’ve conquered your fears, try growing the hardy succulent Ghost Plant. Like most succulents, this beautiful plant with large rosettes is easy to care for, and the only real danger to avoid is over-watering. If you prefer something rare and exotic, go in search of the elusive and endangered Ghost Orchid, whose fragrant flowers seem to be suspended in mid-air. Rhythm and Spirits on Tennessee Avenue will also I host over a dozen bands spanning over a two day period. The fun will start at 8 PM on Friday and go till after midnight, and then on Saturday the fun starts at 6 PM and will go till sometime after midnight as well.

The Margate Breakfast Club will begin it’s live entertainment on 6 PM Friday and go till 8:30 PM and then again on Saturday starting at 5 PM ending at 8:50 PM. Entertainers will include Howie Vance and Chip Rishell.

The Anchor Rock Club will begin live entertainment on Friday at 7 PM and end at 10:45 PM. MADE Atlantic City will have Live entertainment on both Friday and Saturday nights and will feature some incredibly popular acts including the Ash Dakota Band.

All of the proceeds raised during this weekend will benefit some incredibly deserving local charities. For

example, Stop the Heroin was started by Bill and Tammy Schmincke, whose son Steven passed away after a heroin overdose the day before Easter and 2016.

After Steven‘s tragic death they decided that they were going to do whatever it takes to help others struggling with addiction. “We pray that in our own small way we can harness the events of our own tragedy to help prevent others from entering the living hell that has been thrust upon our family.” Proceeds will also benefit the South Jersey Horse Rescue Charity.

Their mission is to provide a loving sanctuary to abandon, neglected, abused, and slaughter bound horses.

They’ve earned the 2019 Bronze Seal of Transparency and are certified by Independent Charities of America. K9 Warriors Will also benefit from this Citywide Charity Event. They train and provide elite service canines for combat veterans while facilitating their transition.

Mainland vs. Ocean City rivalry brings out the best in Sean Bradley, Jake Cook

I

f you got a couple kids from Mainland Regional and Ocean City high schools together for a game of checkers the competition would be intense. That's just the way it is with this long-standing rivalry. Students from Mainland rarely wear any red clothing, and a kid from Ocean City would probably get heckled for wearing a green T-shirt to school. There is no love lost between these two schools, and now the football rivalry is heating up again and harkening back to the days of the late 1990s.

Prior to the 2018 season the schools were paired in the West Jersey Football League's Independence division along with Absegami, Oakcrest, Egg Harbor Township and Bridgeton. Mainland and Ocean City quickly rose to the top, and squared off in late October 2018 with the division title on the line. The game was back-and-forth, with visiting Mainland scoring a 24-21 victory at Carey Stadium on a field goal by then-senior kicker Sean Carey in the waning seconds.

Following the kick — as the teams

Jake Cook thought time had expired — a Mainland player carried his school's flag to the center of the OC logo at midfield and "planted" it on the artificial turf. Sort of a teenage boy, testosterone-filled gesture that said, "we now own this division." That certainly added some fuel to the fire when the teams met this season, again with the division title on the line.

Mainland came into the Nov. 1 game sporting a perfect 7-0 record with Ocean City not far behind at 6-1. Both student cheering sections showed out in force, with the Mainland students employing a "whiteout" them in which every student dressed in white T-shirts. The student sections were raucous even 15 minutes before kickoff, which made

for an exciting atmosphere.

As is the case with most intense rivalries, the thrill of the moment and the stakes of the game can bring name recognition to players who might have flown under the radar in previous games. One such player was Mainland linebacker Sean Bradley, who has been a solid player all season but has been a little overlooked behind stars such as Drew DeMorat and Brayden Pohlman. Bradley finished with four of Mainland's seven sacks as the Mustangs pulled away in the second half to score a 21-6 victory, and the Mustangs can wrap up their second straight Independence Division championship with a win over Egg Harbor Township on Thanksgiving.

"The past few weeks we've been

working on pass rush moves with (assistant coach Antoine) Lewis. It all depended on the alignment, we just had to find a way to get by (the offensive linemen). We've been preparing for them the past two weeks.

Getting seven sacks is crazy, but I felt like we could have gotten even more.

(Getting pressure) was a big part of the plan because they have good wide receivers and if they get into the open field, who knows what can happen?" Bradley said. "Since freshman year we've been talking about being undefeated, and here we are — and to beat an arch rival to get that, it's huge for the whole team."

"We knew, watching film, (Ocean City quarterback Joe Repetti) has had a lot of time to throw the ball all season long and he's very good at finding his receivers. He puts the ball spot-on for a high school quarterback, so we knew we had to get some kind of pressure on him to have a chance," said Mainland head coach Chuck Smith. "If we gave him time we weren't going to be able to cover (Jake) Schneider and (Brad) Jamison on those crossing patterns.

We can't keep up with them, they are too good, but our defensive line did a tremendous job of getting pressure, especially in the second half."

Another player who used the bright lights to shine and show off his talents was Mainland senior wide receiver Jake Cook. He played football his freshman and sophomore years as a quarterback and the team struggled to a combined 2-18 record during those campaigns. Cook de-

cided not to play football his junior year and instead concentrate on his budding basketball career, but came back this fall to put on the helmet and shoulder pads one more time.

It's been a great decision, as Cook as blossomed into one of the best receivers in South Jersey, and may have a college football career in the future. He finished with 137 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns in the win over Ocean City. He said the key was just to start having fun with football — to treat it less like a job and more like the game he loved when he was a kid.

"I just had fun tonight and let loose. I've always been so tight during games, but tonight I just said I'm going to have fun with it, it's my last regular-season game with my brothers that I grew up with. This is awesome," Cook said. "I have been really locked into the games, which

know about this.' I regret not playing (last year)," he added. "I just wanted to finish with the people I started with, my dad really motivated me to come back on the field, and I give big props to my uncle. I didn't want to miss out on this because I've been playing football since I was 5 years old. I kind of missed it."

If other players are hoping to get the chance to get their name in the paper and adoration from classmates, they'll have a chance again this week as the teams square off once again, this time in the opening round of the NJSIAA playoffs.

Sean Bradley isn't a good thing for me because I'm a kid and I have to have fun with it, too. I've been too professional with it, I have to have fun with it, and I had a lot of fun tonight.

any Americans express the need to vote in elections. So we’re clear everyone...Democrats, Republicans and Independents need to vote and have their voice heard. However, being counted in the 2020 census is important as well. Historically many communities (especially those of color) have been under counted. People may be afraid because of traffic tickets or owed fines, some may fear being deported, others may have criminal records and feel no need to be counted. The bottom line is everyone needs to be counted. I called up our (Atlantic County/New Jersey) regional director Jeff Behler (director for New York/New Jersey, including Atlantic County and Camden) I asked 4 questions my readers would want to know he gave me 4 great answers.

SL-What Is The Census?

JB-The 2020 Census counts the population in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories.The count is mandated by the Constitution and conducted every ten years by the U.S. Census Bureau, a nonpartisan government agency. Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire— online, by phone, or by mail.

SL- Why is it important that everyone is counted?

JB-A complete and accurate count is critical for you and your community, because the results of the 2020 Census will affect community funding, and congressional representation.

If you are missed? Funds that should go to your community will not be allocated and can not be reassigned for 10 years.

SL-We have a saying where I’m from.

“What goes on in this house. Stays in this house.” How do we know, this information will not be used to deport people or reported to people outside of The U.S Census Bureau?

JB-Under penalty of law, we can not share your information with anyone else. We can not share the information with other government agencies or law enforcement. We cannot be compelled in anyway to share the information we collect. Even after we leave the census bureau.

SL-What is being done to reach out to previously under counted communities?

JB-First we are hiring census takers from all backgrounds. Census takers that speak various languages. When you answer the door for a census taker. We want them to look like you, speak like you and if possible be someone from your neighborhood. We are working with trusted voices in the community. We will be sponsoring community forums to share accurate information and address concerns. We are making it easy for people to respond by phone, online, by mail. Only if those methods do not work will we send a census taker to knock on your door.
