A Balancing Act Letter from editor

think we can all agree that life rarely turns out as we plan. I know mine didn't! They say if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans. I'm sure He was amused watching my life's trajectory unfold. I started my teaching career, young and enthusiastic, in 1990. Three years later, I was expecting my first child with plans to return to work as soon as possible. The combination of our baby's health problems and a lack of sleep changed that plan fast! I never did return to full time teaching. Though teaching didn't work out, we still needed a second source of income so I began tutoring in the evening. Tutoring offered a perfect compromise, allowing me to teach for a few hours every evening and still be home during the day with my children. One recommendation led to another and I was blessed to be able to do this for over 20 years. It's hard for me to believe that some of my earliest students are now pilots in the Air Force, teachers, or attending college. It seems as though they were just in fourth grade yesterday! As you know, life is full of expenses. Tutoring alone wasn't cutting it so I picked up a few side

hustles over the years. I cleaned weekly rentals on Saturdays, ran errands, sold Avon, babysat and waited tables. Learning how to balance a budget while also raising a family, is not something they teach in school. I often felt pulled in many different directions. It was nearly impossible not to disappoint someone. Like most mothers, I placed myself lowest on the totem pole, always putting everyone's needs before my own. Somewhere in my forties, I reclaimed my power. I decided that one hour a day was mine. Whether I went for a walk, took a yoga class or just read a book, I was entitled to that time. I began to show up better in all the areas of my life. When I began filling my own proverbial cup, I was able to pour into others that much more. Self care is a necessary part of life and too often, the most overlooked. In this issue of Shore Local Newsmagazine we spotlight women in business. Many amazing women have succeeded and established careers and businesses that have become part of the fabric of South Jersey. Each faced their own share of adversity and challenges along the way, yet overcame obstacles, took on dual roles and found success. We are honored to share some of their stories. Hometown Hero: If Not For Grace - Terry & Susan Luma

ometimes people just need to be shown love to regain a spark of hope in their life," explains Terry Luma. Terry and his wife Susan founded "If Not for Grace" ministry that offers mobile showers to the homeless and a whole lot more. For over a decade, Terry and Susan frequently volunteered their time and resources to help the homeless. Susan earned the name "the Cocoa Lady" at Brown's park in Atlantic City, as she is often found handing out hot chocolate on cold days. Two years ago, while serving the homeless, Susan found herself overwhelmed with the concern about where those she

was serving took showers. She began to ponder where they get hot water, soap, and other resources to stay clean. This thought sparked something in Susan and she knew that it would be her mission to offer a solution. The Lumas scoured the tri-state area searching for a mobile shower unit. Only two weeks later, in November of 2017, their unit was in their Egg Harbor Twp driveway. The 12 feet long shower unit includes two shower areas, each with a stall, toilet, and sink. Several days per week, Terry and Susan along with many volunteers take the mobile shower to various locations. They make it their daily mission to meet the basic needs of the homeless, including food, showers, clothes, and resources. However, Terry and Susan strongly believe the most important thing they do is point people to Christ and let them know there us hope. Terry and Susan know first hand the power in their mission because

they both have experienced homelessness in their lifetime. Terry is a recovering addict and has been sober for 25 years. They have a great compassion for the homeless and an even greater faith in Christ. Another component of what they do is wound care."These people are left out to die. They are modern day leapors," says Terry. He recounts the story of an 85 lb. young woman, a prostitute, beaten and battling addictions. The "If Not For Grace" team is certified in Narcan and has saved several lives. "Each one of these people is someone's daughter or sister and

ilton Fitness in Northfield teamed up with Atlantic Cape Community College, Academy of Culinary Arts to offer a special evening for their members. On October 7th, Chef Educator Annmarie Chelius's Nutrition class prepared healthy meals and treats for all the health club's members. The scent of roasted vegetables and pasta in a pumpkin and butternut squash puree vegetable base piqued members interest. Many stopped by the serving station set up in the lobby and sampled the delights. Recipes and nutritional information were also given out. The pumpkin energy balls were a real hit. "It's a perfect fit" agreed Tilton Fitness's General Manager, Andrew Caroluzzi and Dean Kelly McClay of the Academy Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College. "Exercise and healthy eating go hand in hand. Proper nutrition paired with move-

ment and regular exercise is a recipe for success." The event was the brainchild of David Coombs, Chairman of Restaurant Gala, the largest fundraiser for the Academy of Culinary Arts program at Atlantic Cape Community College. Coombs is a long term member of 31 years at the health club also. He saw the opportunity to connect exercise and healthy eating and felt it was an ideal match. He presented the idea to Dean McClay and Andrew Caroluzzi, both of which agreed. "October is 'Farm is School'

They offer accredited degree programs and certificate programs that can be taken on a full- or part-time basis. Bury treasures now for Spring delights

ardeners are a hopeful bunch. They bury treasures in the ground optimistic that their investments will weather the storms of winter and make their grand entrance in the spring. The way this year’s fall began had us wondering if Mother Nature had forgotten to flip her calendar page. But now that we have left

the heat waves behind us, it’s time to get those bulbs in the ground. A small investment of time and money now can yield beautiful rewards of tulips, alliums, and hyacinths in the spring. Isn’t it interesting that these tender-looking bulbs must be subjected to the harsh cold of winter in order to grow and bloom? Daffodils are the very picture of spring. Their carefree yellow or white cups seem like trumpets announcing the return of better weather ahead. Most types of daffodils will spread over time as their bulbs multiply, turning into swaths of beauty. One

of my favorite attributes of daffodils is their distastefulness to the dreaded squirrel. So you can plant them with abandon and without fear. Hyacinths are also ignored by squirrels, who avoid their strong scent. You can find hyacinths in shades of pink, purple, and even burgundy. Of course, they also come in pure white, which provides a beautiful backdrop for more colorful flowers. These are not to be confused with grape hyacinths, which are much smaller and sport bluish-purple clusters of flowers, and also gloriously spread over time.

Don’t forget alliums. These are fun, flowering orbs atop tall green stems. They are deer and rodent resistant due to their taste since they are actually part of the onion and garlic family. Some of my favorite flowers in the garden are tulips. They range from simple and elegant to the exotic flamed parrot tulips. Back in the 1600’s they were all the rage during the Dutch Golden Age of Tulip Mania, when houses and businesses were sold for a single bulb. This was an early example of futures trading. Today, you can possess the same beauty without losing your house. But beware, squirrels have their own mania for tulip bulbs and will go to great lengths to devour yours. Plant the bulbs deeply and cover them with handfuls of gravel and cover well. One of my best defenses against squirrels has been to cut squares of chicken wire to place on top of the ground after planting the bulbs. Weigh the chicken wire down with bricks or stones and remove after a month. When planting fall bulbs, avoid planting single bulbs in a line, which will look sparse and plain. Instead, dig a hole large enough to fit groups of five or more bulbs. The concentration of color in one spot will provide a much more dramatic impact. You still have time to plant bulbs, and they are very easy to grow. You’ll be grateful in the spring, and if you are like me, you’ll wish you had planted even more. The girls created a bright, comfortable children’s reading area at the EHT branch of county library. Upon

approval, the girls partnered with a local graphic artist (Rebecca Benson) for guidance in painting a wall mural entitled “Don’t Bug Me, I’m Reading.” They also donated a new activity rug and six soft floor chairs with profits earned from selling Girl Scout cookies. The girls invested more than 20 hours from start to finish.

Stromboli – Volcano or Sandwich? Stromboli vs Calzone

ecently a friend of mine was having lunch at an Italian restaurant out of the area. On the table were paper placemats with a picture of the map of Italy, and while waiting for his order he noticed that near the “boot” of Italy was an island called Stromboli. He asked me if the map was correct, and I assured him it was. Yes, there is an Italian island called Stromboli, and it is home to one of the three active volcanoes in Italy, also called Stromboli. So, how did the name of this volcano come to be the name of one of the classic Italian pizza-style sandwiches on every pizza shop menu. According to many sources, the name Stromboli comes from a Greek word meaning round, and it’s thought the Greeks gave the island that name

because the volcano looked round from a distance. So, who invented the popular stromboli we all enjoy? Believe it or not, it was not invented in Italy. Nazzereno (Nat) Romano, founder of Romano's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria in Essington, PA, just outside of Philadelphia, claims to have invented it According to the company’s website, romanostromoli.com, in the winter of 1949 Nat started to experiment with a new sandwich, filling his secret recipe dough with a variety of Italian meats, bell peppers and cheeses that he rolled into a log and baked. He began to produce and sell the as-yetunnamed sandwiches in early 1950. During this time, a local resident and regular customer, William Schoefield, asked Nat what he called this new sandwich. Nat admitted that he didn’t have a name for it and invited

This was 1950 and the press was full of the scandal involving Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rosselini who had become romantically involved during the filming of the movie “Stromboli Terra di Orio.” Schoefield suggested the name stromboli – and it stuck. And so, where did a calzone, the stromboli’s cousin, come from? It appears that it originated in Naples, Italy in the 18th century and because of it’s shape it was a popular item to eat on the go. (Interestingly calzone in Italian translates to “Pants legs.) Yes, both are related yet different. For a stromboli, pizza dough is stretched out into a square, then traditionally topped with tomato sauce, Italian meats, sometimes vegetables, mozzarella and ricotta cheeses, rolled and then baked. A calzone is actually a turnover. The pizza dough is rolled into a circle, Italian meats, sometimes vegetables, and cheeses are added to one half, the second half is folded over and the edges are crimped and then it’s baked. In a calzone the sauce is served on the side as a dipping sauce, not put inside with the filling.

unger is a natural and powerful urge, but our bodies generally know when it’s time to eat and when it’s time to sleep. For most people, hunger and appetite peaks in the evening and is lowest throughout the night and first thing in the morning. They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but as far as you’re concerned, you can take it or leave it. When you roll out of bed for work at 7 a.m., the first thing you crave is a nice, warm shower, not a plate full of bacon and eggs; you’re fine with ordering a coffee to go without even so much as a glance at the café’s pastry selection because you can always fill up at lunch. If this sounds like a familiar scenario, you've probably wondered why you’re never hungry in the morning, or maybe you genuinely haven’t noticed your eating habits are a bit unlike the rest of your co-workers and friends. It’s not weird or unheard of to not feel completely ravenous the second you wake up, but breakfast is important, so you might want to re-evaluate why you aren’t interested in food at all before noon most days. What did you eat for dinner last night? What about dessert? Do you generally sit

down at the same time every evening, or are you more inclined to graze in front of the TV at 11 p.m. every night? I’m not judging you, By the way. this is a safe space. But still, it's in your best interest to pay attention to the kinds of foods you eat and how late you’re eating them, especially if you aren’t hungry at all in the morning and are looking to change that. Even though you go to bed starving , When you're sleeping through the night, there’s a lot going on in your body that you don’t even realize is happening. Sure, your mind might be caught up in some cloudy dreamland, but your physical body, especially your digestive system, are hard at work to make sure you feel your best as soon as your eyes flicker awake. Understand , as soon as you fall asleep, your stomach goes through a kind of detoxification period to break down the foods you’ve eaten that day and process them into fuel or waste. What you eat plays a huge role in how your stomach (and therefore your appetite) is going to feel first thing in the morning, it’s also important to factor in what time you’re eating these foods. If someone eats a meal late at night, it’s likely that they're going to wake up with food still in their system. But even if your stomach is empty come morning, there might still be a lot of acid lingering around, which could make you feel a bit sick, and nothing — not even avocado toast — looks appetizing when you're that nauseous.

Waking up far from hungry could be a sign that you’re not sleeping enough because your body obviously wasn’t allotted enough time to burn through what you ate. On the other hand, if you sleep too much, your body will need to release even more glycogen, also known as stored blood sugar, to wake you up. The event is a favorite on the fall calendar and features local children, families, bands, entertainers, businesses and organizations costumed for the occasion. The parade starts at 7:15 p.m. Thursday and proceeds down Asbury Avenue from Sixth Street to 11th Street. All organizations, individuals and families are encouraged to participate in the Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweep on Saturday, Oct. 26. The semi-annual statewide events invite the public to help keep our beaches clean and safe and protect our coastal environment. Iconic Light: The Isley Brothers Making Atlantic City Shout For 60 Years The Light By Raymond Tyler

here may be no greater living icons in music right now than The Isley Brothers. Last Friday they brought their tour to The Hard Rock, Atlantic City. This year Ronald Isley the lead singer and Ernie Isley ( a virtuoso) guitarist are celebrating 60 years since the release of Shout in 1959. This was my 5th time witnessing an Isley Brothers show. The Isley Brothers never disappoint. I first saw them headline Unity Day in Philly in the 1990’s. I have to say The Isley Brothers have always out done their last show. I first really came across The Isley Brothers in 1983 when their recording of Between The Sheets was every-

where in “Black” Atlantic City. Since then I have grooved to everything they have contributed before 1983 like rock classics Shout, Twist and Shout and their slow jams like Voyage To Atlantis. I find the songs that Ron Isley did with R. Kelly (90’s/2000’s) to be nothing short of amazing. The true magic of The Isley Brothers is that they can still connect with more than 5 generations of ears... and I am glad that no one seems to enjoy that more than Ron Isley. The first time I saw The Isley’s perform , it started raining and people stayed in

the rain. He exclaimed… “If you are going to stay in the rain, we’ll keep this party going. I got more than 50 albums ...we can stay here all night.” Friday he threatened to only drop “350” songs on the crowd. I have to say with a smile, do not go see The Isley Brothers and expect an hour and a half show with them performing song snippets. They put on a show and give a concert that separates them from the greats and propels them into an iconic class all by themselves. I was so pleased when Vannessa Jordan of The National R&B Music Society called and asked me to shoot some photos because The City of Atlantic City and The National R&B Society were going to give The Isley Brothers a special award celebrating The Isley Brothers and Shout. I have no idea what it’s like to create a work of art that still receives

awards 60 years after being shared with the public. I am glad I was there a share in that moment.

Linwood Gets Ghosting Mom's Vibe By Marci Lutsky

t is impossible to drive around Linwood in the weeks leading up to Halloween and not see cardboard ghosts on front doors. If you have been wondering what this phenomenon is all about, you are in luck to be reading. It is called ghosting and it’s a tradition that started 17 years ago. My kids look forward to each year! Here is how it works. If your kids find themselves with a ghost on the front door, look down because chances are you will also find a basket or bag of goodies nearby. You will find an orange paper in the goodie basket with instructions on your next steps. You will be directed to the “ghosting house” in Linwood and there you will pick up a new ghost and an instructional sheet by the front door. Then make or buy a collection of Halloween goodies so you can ghost the next

person. We usually hit up the dollar store and get a mix of Halloween candy and toys to fill a bucket. If the person you are ghosting has food allergies, fill up the bucket with fun non-food toys like pencils and stickers. Here comes the fun part. Sneak over to the house you have chosen to “ghost” and tape the ghost on the door. Leave the goodies with a new flyer, ring or knock and run! Besides trick or treating, my kids think ghosting is the best part of Halloween. As soon as they begin seeing

ghosts up in the neighborhood, they are always on the lookout when we get home to see if we have been ghosted. They love trying to figure out who ghosted them and then deciding on who to ghost next. This year they came up with an elaborate plan that involved me in a getaway car so they could ghost their friends without being caught. Then the next day they love to go to school and try to find out if their friends know who ghosted them. This year the ghosting organizer added a new component. If your ghost has a green heart that means that it is has been recycled from the year before and you are supposed to add another heart for each year it is re-used. We love this as it encourages people not be wasteful and take extra good care of their ghosts so that they can be recycled for the following Halloween. If you don’t live in Linwood and think your neighborhood would enjoy this, no worries! I’ve seen plenty of other local communities with a similar ghosting tradition. Start it up in your neighborhood and watch the joy and excitement it brings to the local kids. I have to admit that as a parent, I love

s I sit to write this, the words from “A Tale of Two Cities” are rolling around in my head. Here’s the quote…“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”…do you think Charles Dickens ever gave a thought to the fact that his work would still be quoted and used for sports commentary 160 years late? Since I last wrote, the Flyers and Sixers have won, tying into the best of times theme. However, the Eagles went to Dallas and didn’t just lose, they got embarrassed on national TV. For Birds fans, that’s most definitely the worst of times! Perhaps by the time you read this, the Phillies will have a new manager. In the meantime, we do know a few names that won’t be coming to Philadelphia. Congrats to the Philadelphia Union for winning their first playoff game in franchise history. Finally, we are just a few weeks away from the high school football playoff cutoff date, and just one local team remains unbeaten. From the entertainment world, I’m hoping “The Irishman” comes to a local movie theater so I can see

one last Martin Scorsese crime film before he stops making them. This one is supposed to be so good that Joe Pesci came out of retirement to be a part of it! Also, the final trailer has been released for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” and it looks like it will be a major box office success. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ●● When I last wrote, the Eagles were getting ready to embark on a tough three game road trip. Minnesota QB Kirk Cousins launched an aerial assault against the Birds as the Vikings won that one 3820. As bad as that result was for Eagles fans, the next game was worse as Dallas completely dominated against Philly last Sunday blowing them out 37-10 in Texas. With two bad losses comes finger pointing and that’s never a good look for the Birds. ●● Doug Pederson is now just 2-5 against Dallas in his career. Outside a 27-13 win in Week 17 of 2016 and a 37-9 win in Week 11, the Eagles haven’t been able to solve the Cowboys under Dougie P. He likes to say “the sky is NOT falling”, but as a fan, you have to be concerned about the team’s inability to beat Dallas under Pederson. ●● My last thought on the Birds is that they have suffered a slew of injuries. I know in the NFL, they don’t use injuries as an excuse, and I’m not saying they should get a pass. However, I can’t remember the last time so many starters

shuttled in and out of the lineup with regularity. DeSean Jackson’s absence has been HUGE on the offensive side of the football. The secondary is so banged up and the lack of a consistent pass rush are my two reasons the defense has been so poor. Of course, a win over the Buffalo Bills would keep massive chaos from occurring. So, since this is a “best of”, “worst of” column, I feel it’s only fair to go to the Sixers next. Brett Brown’s team wins their season opener at home against Boston 107-93. It’s the first season-opening victory since beating Miami to start the 2013-14 season. Ben Simmons leads the way with 24 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds and only 4 turnovers. Joel Embiid finishes with 15 points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks. He also walks away with a cut lip after going hard for a ball. Many folks are picking the Sixers to win the Eastern Conference, and there’s nothing we’ve seen yet to make folks change their minds. All five Sixers players finished in double figures in the win over Boston. Newly extended Tobias Harris had 15 points and 15 rebounds. New guard Josh Richardson finishes with 17 points, 2 blocks & a steal…and Al Horford adds 16 points against his former team. That’s a key for me, as Horford can frustrate the “Greek Freak” in Milwaukee and by joining the Sixers, no longer will frustrated Joel Embiid. And then there’s the Flyers… coming off a big 6-2 win at home over the Vegas Golden Knights. It’s hard to get a read on the Fly Guys so far as they won two to start the season, then lost four straight, and now have beaten a

good Western Conference team in Vegas. Already they’re near the bottom of a very difficult Metropolitan Division, but maybe the win against the Knights will push them on a winning streak. One concern I do have is that Carter Hart hasn’t gotten on a signature run of games yet. In fact, you could argue that backup Brian Elliott has been the better of the two goalies so far. It’s early though, and I have to remind myself that they’ve only played SEVEN games as of this writing. One thing I can write fully about is the new seating in the Balcony Suite level at the Wells Fargo Center. What a renovation they’ve done up there as they’ve taken out all of the Balcony Suites and replaced them with common areas that have bars, bathrooms, food, etc. I’ve now been up there twice and I think it’s the best vantage point for hockey in the house. The Flyers make standing room only tickets available, which means for as low as #25, you could see a Flyers game…! I’m hoping to have someone from Comcast Specatcor, the company that runs the Wells Fargo Center on my weekly radio show soon. As of this writing, the Phillies are down to three potential manager candidates. Joe Girardi, Buck Showalter and Dusty Baker. We’ve already learned who will not be coming to Philadelphia as Joe Maddon has taken the Angels job, and now David Ross will be joining the Cubs as their field leader. Hopefully by the next column, we’ll know who the Phillies will have moving forward. In high school football, Mainland football remains unbeaten at

7-0 now. The Mustangs are on a BYE this week, and are eagerly awaiting the contest on 11/1 with one-loss Ocean City. The Red Raiders are 5-1 overall, and that game on 11/1 will be for the WJFL Independence Division crown. Other teams in our coverage area with five wins or more include St. Joseph (6-1), Buena (6-1), Pleasantville (5-1) Cedar Creek (5-2) and Hammonton (5-2). The football playoff seedings will be determined on 11/3, so we’ll keep track of who’s in and who’s out as far as our local schools go. From the entertainment world, I’m not sure there’s a more anticipated film for me coming out than “The Irishman” by Martin Scorsese. It’s based on a book called “I Heard You Paint Houses” and is a crime drama movie that reunites Robert DeNiro & Joe Pesci with Scosese. It’s the first acting role for Pesci in nine years, and reportedly he was the toughest to lock down, despite DeNiro’s repeated pleas to have him come on board. Add Al Pacino playing Jimmy Hoffa to the mix and that’s a “must see” for me. There’s supposed to be a limited release starting on Friday November 1st and then it will be available on Netflix. I sincerely hope to see it on the big screen

Mainland undefeated on strength of defense

huck Smith was a very successful high school football coach at Oakcrest for several years, and when he took over the Mainland Regional program prior to the 2016 season he knew it would take a little bit of time to build the Mustangs back into championship form. Mainland was coming off a 5-5 season in 2015 and coach Smith knew he'd have to put a lot of younger players into the lineup his first two years at the helm. He wasn't expecting to go 2-18 in his first two seasons, though. But Smith knows what he's doing, and he knew he had to get the young players experience, especially on defense, and even if those guys took their lumps for a year or two eventually it would pay off.

And, boy, has it. Last year Mainland went 8-3, won the West Jersey Football League Independence Division title and earned a trip to the state playoffs, and this fall the Mustangs have gotten off to a 7-0 start — mainly due to a stingy defense that averages less than nine points per game allowed. Well, that and freshman running back Ja'Briel Mace, who is on pace to reach 1,000 yards when the Mustangs host rival Ocean City on Nov. 1 after a bye week Oct. 25. Only two teams — Cherry Hill East and Oakcrest — have scored more than eight points this year on Mainland, and the Mustangs have limited opponents to seven or fewer points Seniors Drew DeMorat (#43, in foreground), Brandon Batz in four other games. HERO Walk An Enduring Success In Ninth Year at Ocean City Boardwalk

Supporters lead the walk at Sunday’s 9th Annual HERO Walk & 5K Run on the Ocean City Boardwalk.

SHAMEFUL! Former Governor Christie Whitman has Compared President Donald Trump to Adolph Hitler

ormer New Jersey Governor Christie Whitman has publicly disgraced herself. Whitman resigned as Governor in January, 2001 to become the Environmental Agency Administrator under President George W. Bush. In one of the most disproportionate to reality public comments ever made, Whitman has directly compared President Donald Trump to the monster, Adolph Hitler. Whitman publicly tweeted:

"Hitler has nothing on Trump." After immediate and appropriate public outcry, Whitman quickly deleted the tweet. However, Whitman told MNBC-TV in New York that she stands behind her tweet. If she stands behind her tweet, why did she take it down? Why not own it? Whitman further told WNBC that "the comparison was inflammatory," but that she was going for shock value in order to gain public attention about President Trump. This is classic, text book Trump Derangement Syndrome. And, Whitman has it, real bad! President Trump has had many awful things said and written about him over the past three years. Whitman may just have lowered the bar to the worst public comment every made by a person who had previously served

as a Governor and a Presidential cabinet- level staff member. This is a hard-earned status for Whitman, considering that many other Never-Trumpers have called for the President's assassination and other awful things. First, we'll look at Adolph Hitler. Hitler was the dictator of Nazi Germany and was the architect of the Holocaust in which millions of Jews, Soviets, Poles and Romani (and others) were systematically abused, mistreated and murdered. Hitler directly ordered, organized and condoned an unknown number of war crimes. Hitler deliberately destroyed so much evidence, that we'll never know the true number of victims who died at his evil hands. There is no doubt that the number of the tortured and murdered under Hitler totaled at least 13 million and most likely many more. Scholars, Jewish groups and various government agencies have combed through a variety of different records since the 1940's to try calculate the number of deaths. They have used census reports, captured Germans, Axis archives and numerous postwar investigations to assemble the statistics. Human losses continue to change as more data becomes available. When you reacquaint yourself to what Hitler was directly responsible for; any comparison to President Trump is disproportionate to reality and directly reflects on Whitman's lack of decency, understanding and moral character. Whitman also succeeded in her blind hate Trump rage to minimize the Holocaust. This is also disgraceful and should earn her great scorn at the hands of the public. I long ago became adverse to Whitman. I couldn't have supported her any more than I did in her narrow victory over former Governor Jim Florio. I have long regretted my huge mistake. My dear friend, the late, great Bob Grant came to the same conclusion about Whitman. The truth is that Whitman was a terrible Governor of New Jersey. She

abandoned almost everything that she had promised as a candidate. Whitman's failures as Governor are too numerous to assemble here. One of the worst things that she did was her raiding of the New Jersey state pension fund. Prior to Whitman's disgraceful actions, the actuaries and all objective observers have confirmed that the New Jersey state pension fund was well-funded, highly rated, secure and extremely well managed. Whitman defied the advice of all professionals, economists, actuaries and other experts and basically stole the employee's pension funds. If you did in the private sector, what Whitman did in the public sector, you would have faced significant criminal scrutiny. Instead of showing political courage and actually address New Jersey's significant budget problems, Whitman took what she called "surplus" monies from the state pension fund and placed it in the General Fund. Later, Whitman borrowed $ 2.75 billion to deposit into the pension funds. Borrowing billions to replace actual money that was there is no profile in courage. The stock market was doing well at the time and the infusion of borrowed cash created a bogus "surplus" for a short while. Then, the stock market took a downturn. Whitman also stuck Governor Jim McGreevey with $ 8.6 billion in school debt. It takes such chutzpah for Whitman to brag about leaving us with a $ 1.2 billion surplus, when in fact, she actually borrowed more than $ 11 billion. Since our creepy politicians rigged the system that debt is not included in the governmental standard accounting practices; technically Whitman can say that she left office in 2001 with a $ 1.2 billion surplus. Whitman is the the chief reason why we have the current pension crisis in New Jersey. Whitman left office saying that she had a $ 1.2 billion surplus. However, now you know that this is a big lie. The Whitman years as Governor include January, 1994 through

January, 2001. She left during the middle of her second term. The national economy was doing very well during these years. Most states had large surpluses. By comparison, New Jersey did poorly during these boom years. When you evaluate Whitman's claims about leaving New Jersey with a surplus, etc. You must balance the scales by factoring in that Whitman took money from the state pension fund (any fool can do that), skipped payments to pension funds and borrowed us in to oblivion. If this somehow constitutes excellent business acumen, we're in bigger trouble then we already knew. Skipping payments, borrowing billions and deferring payments to other administrations is why we find ourselves where we are now in New Jersey. Have you noticed that relatively speaking, Whitman is receiving almost no grief for her outrageous comments (Hitler comparison) about President Trump? This is because 90 percent of the media desperately wants to defeat President Trump in 2020 and remove him from office before this if they can. In fact, on November 14, 2019, Whitman (along with Governor

Florio) will receive the "Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award" for their contributions to New Jersey public life. My congratulations to Governor Florio, he deserves it. In Whitman's case, because she wrongfully savaged President Trump, she'll be rewarded for it. Imagine if a prominent former Governor and Presidential cabinet official had said or written these same words about Barack Obama? Remember, Trump Derangement Syndrome is real. Also, all comparisons to Hitler always ends badly for the person waging the outrageous comparison. Whitman should have known this.

Michelle is a stand-up comedian, actor, and freelance writer in Atlantic City. Last year her performance art piece was an official selection for the city-wide art festival 48 Blocks Atlantic City. In 2018, she accepted a four-year appointed seat on the Atlantic City Arts Commission. Her work as a comedian has been seen locally and in various venues around the country. As a writer, she has written everything from movie reviews to trade articles to poker columns. Currently Michelle covers local events in AC, Philadelphia and New York for the entertainment platform The City Pulse. As one of twelve fellows from across the country, Michelle Tomko was tasked with composing a series that featured the lives of citizens in Atlantic City. One might say I overreacted, but the following altercation resulted in the well-known marital “code of silence.” Somehow, we managed to cover about 550 miles and 9 hours of driving through some of the most diverse and breathtaking scenery we have ever seen with nary a word spoken between us. years of marriage and honed it into fine art. A few grunts, nods of the head and one-word answers carried us through the miles and we finally reached Cedar City. We are often amazed at these little towns that we’ve never heard about but are bustling little areas with their own personalities. We found our way to Southern Utah University which had a huge Shakespearean festival going on and a sculpture exhibit by Al Farrow. Farrow’s exhibit, Wrath & Reverence was sculptures of religious architecture made from deconstructed guns, ammunition and metal. It was both mesmerizing and emotional. I would recommend Googling his exhibit to see something quite unique. By now the frostiness of our code of silence had begun to melt and we set about making our plans for the rest of the day. Cedar City is the home of Cedar Breaks National Monument a geologic amphitheater with stunning views. It is also one of the few dark sky parks in the world making it one of the best locations for star viewing. Our plan was to get there at sunset where the sides of the 2,000-foot chasm would be brightly lit and then stay to view the night sky. At this point in the journey, we were no strangers to winding, climbing roads and this was no exception. Our heavily laden van struggled up the steep inclines until we reached the parking lot at the top of the mountain. Our timing couldn’t have been better as the sides of the rock hills were illuminated in colors of orange,

yellow and brown. I photographed as much of the scene as I could and we took the required “selfies” but we were becoming increasingly short of breath. A sign indicated we were at 10,340 in elevation. The website stated that the ranger station there had little oxygen bottles for those who wanted it, but the station was closed for the evening. As we walked along the trail it soon became apparent that due to our lightheadedness, we would not stay until it got dark. With no cell nor internet reception we thought it prudent to head back down the hill where we were able to breathe. Again, we rode in silence but this time it was simply to conserve oxygen. e moved into the new house in 1962, when I was seven. As my mother, sister and I pulled into the driveway that first day, the next door neighbor, MaryLou, came bouncing down her back steps, waving her hands, smiling, and yelling, “Hiya! Hiya, youse! I’m your new neighbor, MaryLou…” I heard my mother whisper ‘dear God’ or something as she rolled down her window and returned the greeting with MaryLou. They exchanged pleasantries for a moment, with MaryLou doing most of the talking about the neighbors and all the other kids that lived on the block. And then she said, “And you do know the last owner, Mr. Schaller, died in this house, right? Yep, right in this very garage. I called him Howie for short.” My mother, sister and I all

got the same case ‘wide-eyes’ “Ohhh…”, said MaryLou. “Youse didn’t know! Well, whoops, I guess”, she giggled. My mother looked at my sister and I again, with a dismissing, “she’s only kidding” look. But I believed MaryLou, as she continued. “Yep. It happened in 1955”, she said, with her eyes slowly catching the same case of ‘wide-eyes’ we had as she talked. “His wife, Bertha…I used to call her Bertie, for short… found him when she got home from Morgan’s, the little corner store around the corner there”, she said. “Well, I’ll have to hear more about this later, but right now, we have so much to do”, my mother explained. She wanted to finally get us out of the car and into the house. “OK, then, let’s all have lunch in a couple days”, MaryLou said, slightly annoyed at my mother’s abruptness. “Yes, let’s do that”, smiled mom. “Oh, one other thing”, MaryLou cautioned as she headed for her back steps. “Be really careful about letting those kids play in the woods behind the houses here”. She pointed to the woods that lined the back of all the properties on our street. “A lot of weird things go on back there. There’s a spring, and lots of

swamps, and a really high Tarzan swing that goes out over the lake back there, and a path called ‘dead man‘s hill‘. It’s a forty foot drop into those woods. Be careful”, she smiled wryly, looking straight at me. I was so excited, I couldn’t stand it. Woods, lakes, springs, a dead man’s hill, and a Tarzan swing to boot. I though we moved to heaven. My mother looked at me with daggers, and simply said, “NO! Wait until your father gets home tonight”. I stomped my foot on the ground, moaning, “awww, c’mon” as I walked across the backyard and towards the new house. I looked at the back of the house, and noticed a man staring at me through the window that was between the top two and bottom two windows. He looked sad, and had curly, black hair. “Are the movers still working, mom?” I asked as we walked into the kitchen through the back door. She said there were gone. “Then who was the man looking out the window at me?”, I asked. My mother looked questioningly at me for a moment, then started calling, “Hello? Hello?” through the house. We stood in the living room, and mom was calling up the steps, but no one answered. I noticed a small, old picture of an elderly man and woman near some boxes and papers on the floor by where we were standing. The man was the same man I’d seen staring at me in the window out back. I tried to tell her, but my mother interrupted, asking, “What window did you see him in?”, she asked. I told her the middle window in between the first and second floor.

“That’s very strange”, she pondered for a few moments. “That window would have to be at that landing, where the steps turn to the right”, she said. She grabbed me and my sister’s hands, leading us back outside to the back yard. We stood and looked at the back of the house. There was a window on the outside. But none inside, where one should have been. “Mom, but mom”, I said, again trying to tell her about the picture. Again, I was interrupted. “What are youse looking for?” called MaryLou from her back steps. Startled, we all jumped, then just looked at her, unable to say anything. Suddenly, she burst into a fit of hysterical laughter, doubling over, and smacking her hands on her thighs. “I know! I know!”, MaryLou blathered through her laughter. “Bertie had that window covered on the inside. She didn’t want to see the garage and remember Howie every time she walked up the steps. Ain’t it the keenist? Youse got a secret window!” My mother stared down at me and said nothing for a very long time. She knew she loved working with people and when the opportunity came up to buy Faber’s of Central Square, she jumped at the chance. “With 30 years of experience in graphic design, I am able to utilize my talents to help customers with personalized stationary and invitations for weddings, bar/bat Mitzvah, showers, and special occasions,” Rosenthal said of her shop Joelle’s Card & Gift Boutique in Linwood. Rosenthal’s typical day consists of a lot of work. It is a lot more work than most people would expect. I usually start my day by making phone calls regarding orders,” she explained. Another part of her day consists of checking new arrivals and/or cards, pricing and putting them out on display. With that comes reorganizing displays to make everything look pleasing to the eye, and getting everything to fit. “On occasion I meet with various sales reps looking for new products to keep my inventory fresh,” she said. “Getting to know and meet so many new people, including all of the other storeowners, has been an incredible

experience,” she remarked. Her goal for the store is to continue finding items that are unique and different from those found in other gift shops. “Cards are a large part of my business, so I keep a very eclectic variety of cards by purchasing from approximately 10-15 different companies. Another large part of Joelle's is the toys we sell from Melissa and Doug. We carry the largest selection in the area and have the ability to get anything within a couple of days, or have items drop shipped to where ever the customer needs it to go,” Rosenthal said. “We also take a lot of pride is providing free beautiful gift-wrapping.” Her advice to those thinking about opening a business is this: The most exciting part of her journey as a business owner is easy, she said. “Do your homework; make sure the product you are selling is a needed product for that area,” Rosenthal said. “Make sure you love what you are doing and have a lot of patience. Be prepared to make it your life. I personally love being in the store and the amazing customers I have, but it is not for everyone.” The customers are amazing and providing them with the personalized service they deserve makes all of the hard work worth it.

ara Cermanski, Director of Partnerships at Jim Whelan Historic Boardwalk Hall and Atlantic City Convention Center is celebrating her tenth year as a member of the Boardwalk Hall staff. Her roots go back to Conshohocken , PA where she lived before making an emotional move to the Ocean City area. Why she came to the area is a story in itself. “My family always vacationed in Ocean City, NJ and I always worked in restaurants in Somers Point, NJ and when I was a junior at Penn State, my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer. When my mom passed away, felt I just had to get back to the beach,” said Cermanski. point of no return? Raise your hand... anyone? Of course you have. We all have. This is a dangerous thing known as “burn out." The World Health Organization classified Burn Out as “a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion; increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and reduced professional efficacy.” Why do we, as humans, allow ourselves to get to that point? How does this happen? Well, not to point all fingers back to ourselves because I know there are things that are beyond our control but, I am a problem solver by nature, and when I find out that there’s a problem approaching (burn-out), I look for how that problem can be solved and here is what I come back to everytime. We need to spend more time doing what we need to do, so that we can do what we need to do. Here’s what I mean by that… Let’s say you know you have a busy day ahead, and you know that from the moment you walk in you’ll be bombarded, distracted, and not able to focus on the most important tasks you have to handle - how do we stay on track? What would happen if instead of going right into your chair, you invested 30 minutes before work organizing the day so that when you walked in you knew exactly what your main focus was, and you could spend

the day systematically tackling that focus. Wouldn’t that 30 minutes be worth it, to have a productive and focused 8 hours? Or, let’s say you’re carrying the weight of a situation at home, and you’re coming into work in 15 minutes. If you invested that 15 minutes doing something to shift your mind from its current state, to somewhere more positive - whether that looks like prayer, meditation, journaling, singing a song that lifts you up - for me, it’s walking down to the beach and watching the waves crash for a few minutes... wouldn’t that 15 minutes be worth it, to have a productive and focused 8 hours and to avoid burnout? Sometimes what you need to do is smaller - like needing to take a lunch break so that your focus isn’t on your growling stomach, but can be brought back to the work in front of you. Or sometimes you need something more drastic like a vacation where you reset yourself and spend intentional time relaxing and recharging to come back ready for action. Humans (myself included) have a bad habit of ignoring their needs and their internal “check engine light” because we think we can handle more than we’re designed to. Your body and your mind have needs, and when those basic needs aren’t

met, you will shut down. Take the time to look into yourself, diagnose why your check engine light is on, get to the root of it and don’t be afraid to do this daily. The good thing about this bad habit we have, is that habits can be changed by simply replacing them with new and better habits. You have the power and tools to change your life and avoid burnout. An open discussion about Nancy Adler's journey to become a leading nutritionist

hen did you develop an interest in nutrition? How did you decide the timing was right to pursue this? Twenty two years ago, I was working in the salon industry. I owned my own salon for four years and I decided I really wanted to understand the fitness industry and learn to be precise in my own nutrition for a healthier way of life. With the never ending support of my husband, I took the leap to go on to study every facet of nutrition. I hold 3 of the highest accredited certifications in Fitness and Nutrition which are kept current every 2 years. I started in the gym in the garage in our home taking a few clients in to consult with them and help them to address their weight loss goals. It caught on quickly and with much success to my clients. I needed to make the decision to make this my life or stay in the only business I knew, owning salons. After giving much thought, I went on to receive comprehensive training and accreditation in Diabetes training, sports certifications for optimal sport performance for adults and children, child nutrition, elder nutrition, weight loss and weight management certification, nutrition coach certification, holistic nutrition, childhood acne, obesity certification and lifestyle consultant. Almost 23 years later I know I made the right decision as I’ve helped change and even helped to save so many lives What were the greatest challenges/obstacles you faced? Challenges are always a part of every business especially when just starting out. Conquering those challenges are what make you successful. At the time, I went into the field of Nutrition, people were just starting to move forward full force on taking responsibility for their health in a much more structured and smart way. They wanted to learn and not diet any longer. Understanding what foods did to push them to a final place of staying healthy and fit, losing medications, and exercising with acceptance became a staple in the American home

. This was finally the breakthrough the “dieters” needed to end the road to constant deprivation. How did you grow your business? My business grew and continues to grow through many venues. Word of mouth is at the top of that list. The best way is for someone to believe in something is when they witness someone who has much success in my program. The proof is in the pudding! Another way to get the word of health out there circling back to me was through local radio and print sharing the word of wellness. These things are vital if you are looking to grow your business. Getting out there and speaking to large groups, involving yourself with the local fundraising events and taking the time to give back to those in need. What would you recommend to someone just starting out in te industry? Nutrition has come to a place where so many want to make this their livelihood. The first thing I say to a person I am mentoring is to shoot for the stars. Get your dream! Believe in you when no one else will. Read,

hen did you develop an interest in travel and travel and entrepreneurship? How did you decide the timing was right to pursue this? Before opening Berman Travel, I was always in a management position so the next step was to be a business owner. I truly love helping people and I have a degree in psychology so this was just the next move for me to help people plan amazing & memorable vacations. What were the greatest challenges/ obstacles you faced? I'm 100% owner of Berman Travel, LLC, although my husband, Marc Berman does all of the marketing for Berman Travel. We share household duties and Marc loves to cook so I'm lucky in that department. Since I opened the business in 2002, Marc has always done 100% of the cooking. One of the biggest challenges has been the OTA’s (online travel agencies) which started to emerge, about 6 years after we opened so we had to rethink our business model and we adapted and today we continue to grow. How did you grow your business? We began as an online company marketing through Google in 2002. In addition, through our extensive travels, we videotape, destinations, cruise ships and resorts. With over two million views, the videos appear on Berman Travel’s two video channels boasting the most travel videos produced by any independent travel agency in the country.

We grew such a large database that now the majority of our clients are loyal, return customers. Of course we still welcome and love new clients as well. I also realized I couldn't work 24 hours a day so I started bringing in IC's (independent contractors) from across the country who I trained to offer the exceptional service Berman Travel is known for. What would you recommend to someone just starting out? Pick a business that you are passionate about and research it thoroughly then find people in the industry and ask them a lot of questions and check your competition as well and then… go for it! Also, do what you do best and hire people to do the tasks that might not be your strength. Work on improving what you're great at to be even better. Also, extremely important is timely follow-up and gentle persistence are both key in sales. It takes five or more “nos” to get a “yes” and most people give up on one or two “nos" The best salesperson is the most persistent. Plus, establishing relationships is paramount to building your business, people want to be connected and feel special. I have a saying hanging in my office from Jeffrey Gitomer, "Make a sale and you'll make a commission but make a friend and you'll make a fortune". If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be? There is NO set it and forget it, nothing replaces dedication and hard work!
