ucy the Elephant, our region’s National Historic Landmark, has announced her candidacy for President.

Her platform is “peanuts for all.”

The presidential celebration will commemorate her 135 th birthday, to be celebrated on Saturday, July 23 rd from 10am to 8pm. Rain date is Sunday, July 24th . All guests, regardless of age, will be allowed to vote in our special election; choosing

between Hillary, Donald, or LUCY the ELEPHANT for PRESIDENT! Everyone’s favorite STILT-WALKER, MACKIE, will be on hand to greet Lucy’s friends and help celebrate her special day.

Again this year, Lucy will have a carnival midway, complete with more games of chance and prizes than last year. No birthday party would be complete without hotdogs, soda, Philly Pretzels, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones, and of course, birthday cake. A favorite from last year,

they are bringing back roasted fresh Jersey corn on the cob… YUM! New this year, they will feature a nine hole miniature golf course. There will be a giant slide, a Birthday Cake Moon Bounce, and a 30-foot rock wall. Want to relax for a moment? You’ll be able to have your future told with tarot cards by Doreen. In addition to all of that, special guest Evelyn Johnson of Cape May Court House, author of Lucy’s official bedtime storybooks, will also be on hand to sign copies of her highly acclaimed children’s books from 10am to 4pm. As always, tours through the World’s Largest Elephant will be offered every half hour.

The annual collectible Lucy Birthday t-shirt featuring Lucy for President will be available in limited quantities while supplies last. Music, food, and fun will be the order of the day as Margate, and all of South Jersey, celebrates 135 years of the World’s Largest Elephant. Revenue generated from sales throughout the birthday celebration will help offset operating costs and capital improvements to this esteemed National Historic Landmark.

Satellite parking will be available at Union Avenue School playground. Entrance to the playground is located on Vendome Avenue between Winchester

and Monmouth Avenues. A complimentary shuttle, furnished by the Atlantic City Jitney Association, will be running every 15 minutes between the playground and Lucy from 10am to 8pm.

To begin the week-long birthday celebration, the Save Lucy Committee will be honoring two of its co-founders; Sylvia Carpenter (deceased) and Ed Carpenter.

To pay homage to their contributions of saving Lucy from the wrecking ball and taking the first steps to restore our National Treasure, “THE CARPENTER WALKWAY” will be unveiled on Saturday, July 16th at 11:30am.

Additionally, there will be special fund-raiser: Lucy’s Holiday in NYC Raffle.

The grand prize is a two-night stay in a luxury suite at the Waldorf Astoria; four premium seats to the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and a $500 American Express Gift Card. Tickets are $20 and are on sale at Lucy and the website www.

From Criminal To Crusader

M

any wouldn’t expect a great crusader to come from a state prison, but that’s exactly what Matthew Maher did.

The 32-year old from Middle Township shocked South Jersey before he had a criminal record. Along with his older brother, Maher received a full scholarship to Temple University for soccer, and was then drafted as a first-round pick.

He played as a defender for the Carolina FC, and then for the New Jersey Ironmen in 2008, and later on the Philly Kicks. Maher and his brother are a rare breed in major leagues - parading South Jersey roots.

Tragedy fell when Maher tore ligaments in his knee, putting an end to his indoor soccer career. After doctors’ appointments and debuting his new brace, the defender went out for a few beers with his brother and friends.

Maher made the choice to drive.

On March 7th, 2009, Maher hit an SUV on the Atlantic City Expressway. Four people stood outside their vehicle, panicked. Lights flashed as police arrived to take Maher into custody.

‘I went out without a plan,” said Maher. “And when you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

Maher says “his world imploded” when he overheard the dispatch center mention the death of a passenger.

His intoxicated driving killed a man, a father of three.

Maher had been raised a Christian, and when he heard the news, he deeply grieved the loss of the passenger. After he was released from jail the next day (awaiting charges after a thorough investigation of the accident was completed), he got a call from his old high school teacher.

Maher began to speak in schools about his tragedy. He spoke about accountability and used his career and his accident as a platform to encourage and inspire youth.

Maher spoke using a series titled “That Guy.” At one point, Maher was “This Guy” (professional athlete), and then become “That Guy” (driving while intoxicated). No one wants to be “That Guy.” Don’t be “That Guy.” Through the summer, Maher taught soccer camps, awaiting his arrest.

On January 7 th , 2010, Maher turned himself over the police, and was charged with First Degree Aggravated Manslaughter. On crutches, the former soccer player hobbled into

the custody of the state, not to be free for over six years.

As each side pleaded their case, the deceased passenger’s family spoke. His daughter spoke about the beauty and kindness of her father.

But his son is whom struck Maher the most.

“You destroyed my world!” yelled the son. He had already been screaming about that night before his father’s death. With tears in

his eyes, he pointed at Maher and said “But I forgive you, my brother.”

After Maher’s sentencing, the two hugged.

Maher headed off to prison, where he became arguably the greatest influence on the inmates. He and Jason Williams, former professional basketball player, started a Bible Study, where a majority of inmates would gather to listen and take part.

Maher had an impact on his roommate, Little John, who was a former member of the Mob. After converting to Christianity, Little John now has a stable job, wife, children, and a positive attitude and lifestyle.

With the help of her son, Maher’s mother began the Be Still Foundation, based on the Bible Verse Psalm 46:10.

The Foundation blogs about Maher’s experience and his positive message.

People from over 121 countries have tuned in, and many have been inspired by the forgiveness given to Maher after the tragedy.

After being released in 2013, Maher continued to speak in schools, and expanded to speaking to businesses, churches, and even the Wardens’ Administration. He writes a column for the Cape May Herald on a regular basis.

He currently works as the Youth Pastor of Coastal Christian Church of Ocean City, and has been married for almost a year.

“I refuse to limit God,” said Maher.

“If that family can forgive me, what can stop me?”

A Little Bit Of History: Ocean City

O

n the graceful french curve island just across the water from Somers Point can be found, by their own motto, “America’s Greatest Family Resort.” The island stretches seven miles from bow to stern and sports award-winning beaches, a fun-filled boardwalk, a solid family-focused philosophy, and an interesting history of how it became that way.

Prior to the arrival of the first European explorer, Cornelius Jacob, in 1611, the barrier island was already a summer destination for the native Lenni-Lenape people of the area. It was their summer seafood hunting ground. The Lenape clans would paddle down any number of tributaries to what is now Ocean City to gather oysters, crabs, clams and fish to add to their clan’s stores of food.

The hunting party’s return was tra-

ditionally met with a summer feast, which added a sense of celebratory anticipation to the tasks of gathering and preserving the food.

To the north, south, and east of the Ocean City area, European colonization had begun to take root. By mid-1600’s, the whaling companies were well established. The sight of tall ships off the coast would become a more and more familiar sight for the summer Lenape foraging parties.

In 1693, the Somers Family established Somerset Plantation and the settlement of Somers Point, which included the nearby islands. The only access to these islands was by boat, so the islands were used primarily as a grazing area for domesticated herds. However, this did not stop the locals from traveling across the water for a picnic on the beach now and then.

tion. This was the only industry on the island for many decades, owing to the lack of accessibility to this stretch of land. In time, the northern head of the island became known as Peck’s Beach.

A ferry system was set up to shuttle workers and goods to and from the mainland, but the island was still relatively isolated; an undisturbed gem sitting just out of reach. That is until four Methodist ministers met under a cedar tree in 1879, purchased the property, and

decided to turn it into a Christian retreat and camp.

Development of the area came quickly. It was an elaborate plan, complete with lots set aside for businesses, cottages, and hotels. Within the first 5 years, a school, a bridge, and a boardwalk had been built. The railroad was added soon after. It became a boomtown with the population increasing 230% between the years of 1890 and 1910. By the mid-1900’s, people were living year round on the island and the city began to take its present form.

▶ The Secret Life of Pets, July 8th, Rated G In the vein of Disney’s Toy Stories, we often wonder what goes on in our homes when we aren’t looking. What do our pets do when humans are not around? This family animated film looks to reveal these secrets, the secrets of cats, dogs, and even bunnies. An all-star cast, such as Kevin Hart, Tara Strong, and Louis C.K. lend their voices and personalities to this film, which is brought to us from the minds behind Despicable Me and Minions. This movie is already a huge success and will likely become a new series for the studio. ▶ The Infiltrator, July 12th , Rated R Emmy-award winning actor Bryan Cranston takes on a new role into a territory he is somewhat familiar with: drugs and violence. Mr. Cranston takes the role of real-life US. Customs Agent Rob Mazur, in an undercover mission to take down one of the most vicious drug kings of our time, Pablo Escobar. The movie is based on an autobiography of the same name, written by Rob Mazur, and based on the true events of that operation. ▶ Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, July 15th , Rated PG-13 More than two years of internet hatred finally come to an end, in this female-led reboot of the 1984 classic comedy of the same name. Directed

by Paul Feig, who started a female-led revolution with Bridesmaids in 2011, Ghostbusters hopes to become the sensation that the original was. Early reviews currently sit at “mixed” and the movie may have a tough time financially. The reboot will

mirror the original in plot, as a team of everyday women strap on proton packs to fight an evil paranormal being. ▶ Star Trek: Beyond, July 22nd, Rated PG-13 Star Trek Beyond is the third in the new take of movies, based on the classic scifi show, to which many great actors and characters find their ways into the spotlight. The third film sees the Enterprise crew, shot down on an alien world, under fire from a vicious enemy, and seeking a young alien warrior for assistance. The cast includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and Idris Elba. Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek: Into Darkness were massive successes, with strong word of mouth. Star Trek Beyond hopes to continue the success, especially as 2016 marks the 50th year of the franchise. However, the release comes with a heavy heart, with the unexpectedly tragic passing of Anton Yelchin, who plays as Pavel Chekov in the movie. This one’s for you, Anton! ▶ Jason Bourne, July 28th, Rated PG-13 Matt Damon had a heck of a time in The Martian. So much so, he has become a jaded, secretive, and downright lethal weapon back on Earth, reprising his role as Jason Bourne, the weapon gone awry. In Jason Bourne, the former agent, who bears the same name as the movie, is thrust back on to The Grid once again, when a new secret is uncovered. Tommy Lee Jones is a toughas-nails special agent chief determined to bring Jason down. Jason Bourne’s journey will take him around the world, including the strip of Las

Vegas. The movie is directed by Paul Greengrass, the man who started it all in 2002’s the Bourne Identity. ▶ Suicide Squad, August 2nd, Rated PG-13 Suicide Squad is a new experiment for comic book movies and DC Comics, especially coming off the heels of 20th Century Fox’s Deadpool. Where most comic book films have starred a hero fighting for good, this is a team of villains, fighting more evil villains. No capes, no codes, no rules. Featuring an amazing cast: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, and Jared Leto, this team of villains will destroy the city in order to

save it. DC Comics favorites, such as Deadshot, The Joker, and Harley Quinn, will make their appearance as well. The biggest highlight of these characters will be the portrayal of Jared Leto as The Joker, the clown prince of crime.

Since 2008’s The Dark Knight, a very high bar has been set for The Joker, and Jared Leto’s portrayal may be the best yet. The movie will also feature Ben Affleck as Batman, though he is a presence and not the main focus of the story.

The movie is being directed by David Ayer, who achieved a ground-breaking milestone in 2014’s War film, Fury.

APE MAY COURT HOUSE— Atlantic Cape Community College is offering a variety of credit classes this fall at its Cape May County Campus, 341 Court House-South Dennis Road, in Cape May Court House. Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 29.

Classes offered this fall include: Financial Accounting, Fundamentals of Nutrition, Art Appreciation, Intro to College Chemistry, Intro to Business, Principles of Marketing, Business Law I, Internet Research, Intro to Computers, Interpersonal Communication, Public Speaking, Macroeconomics, Educational Psychology, Reading/Writing I, Composition I, Earth Science, Intro to Government & Politics, Western World I, Precalculus, College Algebra, Statistical Methods, Intro to Philosophy, Child Psychology, Elementary Spanish I, and Intro to Theater.

Virtual classes offered this fall include: Comprehensive Medical Terminology, Entrepreneurship, Human Resources Management, Intro to Public Relations, Intro to Criminal Justice, Intro to Cyber Crime, Criminal Law, 19th Century American Lit, Introduction to Humanities I, Introduction to Logic, Abnormal Psychology and Social Psychology.

Classes for this new model will be taught in a hybrid virtual format with students at the Mays Landing Campus. The professor will divide their time between the two locations and the course will be live-streamed to the opposite campus at each class meeting, which will enable students to earn up to nine degrees entirely in person at CMCC, including: Business Administration, Communication, Criminal Justice, Education, General Studies, Health Services, Human Services, Liberal Arts and Psychology.

First-time Atlantic Cape students applying for fall semester are encouraged to inquire about Atlantic Cape’s Conditional Dual Admission agreements with Stockton, Rutgers and Fairleigh Dickinson universities.

Atlantic Cape’s associate degree also is transferable upon acceptance at all public four-year colleges in New Jersey, and the college has nearly 40 articulation/transfer agreements with four-year colleges and universities across the country.

Buddy Grover Shines A Light

T

here’s a treasure at the top of Absecon Lighthouse that makes the 171 foot climb totally worthwhile. That treasure is volunteer lighthouse keeper Buddy Grover, who in his authentic uniform looks as if he walked straight out of the lighthouse’s past. Buddy greets climbers and hands out “I Climbed” cards, with a smile bright enough to light up the small watchroom. He answers questions and shares facts with an enthusiasm that is infectious.

“The Fresnel lens was shipped all the way from Paris and shines for 19.5 nautical miles,” he boasts. “It’s saved thousands of lives.”

“I climb the lighthouse for exercise,” explains Buddy, “not every day, but as often as I can. Today was the 63rd time this year, not bad for a 88 year-old guy.”

Buddy first climbed several years ago at a celebration for the lighthouse’s birthday. “I had cake and I got to climb for free,” he said, “after I wrote a small check (a tax deductible donation) as a gift for the birthday girl. Buddy uses different tricks to help motivate him. At first he kept himself accountable by telling people he was doing it. “I didn’t want to be embarrassed like the guy who joins a gym as a New Year’s resolution then stops going by mid-February,” he said. Next he got people to donate $1 for each time he climbed. “I raised about $1,600 for the lighthouse that year,” said Buddy. Lately he’s been encouraging others to climb with him.

“I take photos up top and put them on Facebook to get some publicity for the lighthouse,” he said Fancy equipment isn’t always necessary for a great workout. In this case, just one of the oldest, tallest lighthouses in the country, affectionately known as Dear Old Abby.

Clams With Tomatoes, Basil, & Blue Cheese

1 tablespoon olive oil 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 1/2 cup dry white wine (I used sauvignon blanc) 1 28 ounce can whole peeled tomatoes 50 littleneck clams, soaked and scrubbed clean of any sand salt, to taste, only if needed* freshly cracked black pepper, to taste 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold, cut into pieces 6 ounces creamy blue cheese, such as gorgonzola dolce 1 cup fresh basil leaves, torn crusty bread for dipping

use a pair of tongs to remove any clams that have opened up into a serving bowl. Continue placing open clams in the bowl until they’ve all opened up.

If there are any clams that won’t open, cover and wait a few minutes, and if they’re still being stubborn, discard them.

Stir the butter into the sauce one piece at a time, then crumble in the blue cheese and stir. Some of the cheese will melt into the sauce, but be sure there are plenty of chunks that still remain. Stir in half of the basil, then pour over the clams.

Top with the remaining fresh basil and serve immediately with crusty bread for dipping.

Olympic Gold Medalist Nastia Liuken Named Night in Venice Grand Marshal Nastia Liuken will serve as grand marshal for the 62nd annual Night in Venice boat parade on Saturday, July 16.

iuken was a five-time Olympic gymnastics medalist and the a l l - a ro u n d champion at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. She will work as an NBC Sports commentator for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Ocean City Draws Artist To Paint

hen you picture Ocean City, what do you think of?

Many would say the sun, surf, and sand, and that’s exactly what inspires local artist Aaron Bogushefsky, or, as many know him, simply Bogy.

Bogy with his daughters, Willow & Zoe and wife Samantha This local artist grew up in Ocean City, and has always loved painting. In high school, he sold his first watercolor painting to teachers and family friends.

Bogushefsky then attended the University of Delaware to pursue an art degree, then Stockton for a teaching degree. In fact, one of Bogushefsky’s most famous pieces, a panorama of the Ocean City Boardwalk, was inspired by college homesickness.

Today, the artist teaches art at the Ocean City Intermediate School and coaches soccer.

Drawn to both surf culture and fine art, Bogushefsky effectively combines classic watercolor painting with modern curves and style. He paints panoramas

of the city and humorous takes on the beachgoers in the summer months.

He emphasizes surf culture and celebrates Ocean City life.

“Ocean City is not known for its world-class waves, but has a worldclass surfing culture and community”, said Bogushefsky. “It’s one that I love and am proud to represent in whatever small way I do”.

This local artist is also inspired by his wife Samantha, and daughters Zoe and Willow. Bogushefsky says he typically paints in the evening, where he can find quiet and peace.

In every painting, Bogushefsky adds a sense of mystery and allure by hiding a watermelon slice in every painting.

Bogushefesky recently published a coloring book, which can be purchased from any surf shop on the island. “It was intended to be challenging yet accessible to the young and old alike”, said Bogushefsky.

Bogushefsky’s hope is that people will appreciate the nuances of “our city by the sea” just as he does.

As for the future, Bogushefsky plans to continue developing his skills as a watercolor artist and print more coloring

His favorite piece is his Bob Marley painting done in 2008, and will forever cherish his panoramic view of Ocean City done in 2001.

Phillies Mid-Season Report

ntering the 2016 season, many of the baseball exper t s , scout s , and writers predicted that the Philadelphia Phillies would win less than 70 games, and be ranked near the bottom in terms of wins. So far this season, the Phils have played slightly better than expected. They are a very inconsistent club. The team has stretches where they play well and then other times they look lost in every aspect of the game.

Lets start with the rotation.

Aaron Nola has looked like an ace at times, but at other times he looks over-challenged and belongs in AAA. Jerad Eickoff and Jeremy Hellickson have pitched decently. Hellickson is a candidate to be moved by the August 1st trade deadline. Vince Velasquez has pitched solidly. Aside from Hellickson, the rotation is very young and has room to grow.

The bullpen has been ok. Jeanmar Gomez has been very good in the closers role. He is another candidate to be moved. Hector Neris has been unhittable at times, but he has also

been roughed up a bit. David Hernandez and Andrew Bailey (A South Jersey Native) have been decent.

The offense is where this team could use some help. Maikel Franco has been wildly inconsistent. He will

homer in four straight games, then go two for his next seventeen, and swing at every pitch, no matter the location. Tommy Joseph has taken the first baseman’s job away from Ryan Howard and has been a nice

surprise. Oduebel Herrera is the lone All Star representative from the Phillies. He is definitely one of the better hitters in the National League. Peter Bourjos and Cody Asche have been better as of late but by no means are they a part of the future plans with the Phils.

The Phillies farm system ranks as one of the top ten in major league baseball. They have four of the top fifty prospects when baseball prospectus did their mid season report.

SS J. P. Crawford leads the group at #1, followed by OF Nick Williams at #23, RHP Jake Thompson at #36 and C Jorge Alfaro at #46.

With the trade deadline approaching several Phillies fi gure to get traded. As mentioned before, Jeremy Hellickson is almost certain to go. Utility man Andres Blanco, Peter Bourjos, Jeanmar Gomez, Andrew Bailey, and David Hernandez all figure to attract interest as well.

The second half of the season should be very exciting. I am looking forward to the chemistry that this team continues to build. Along with the young guys coming up, the future of this team is very bright.

Former Pleasantville Greyhound Going to Rio

ormer Pleasantville High School graduate Nia Ali has earned a roster spot on the United States Olympic Team, competing in this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The 27-year old athlete competed in the 100-meter hurdles event in the Olympic trials, which took place in Eugene, Oregon. Ali placed third with a time of 12.55 seconds, behind other United States Olympic qualifiers Kristi Castlin (with a time of 12.50 seconds), and Brianna Rollins (with a time off 12.33 seconds).

Ali has been a decorated athlete since high school. The Pleasantville senior from Philadelphia won the 2006 NJSIAA Group II Indoor Championships in the 55m with a time of 7.20 seconds, 8.32 seconds in the 55m high hurdles, 25.19 seconds in the 200m and 59.54 seconds in the 400m.

After graduating from Pleasantville High, Ali competed for the University of Southern California in multiple events such as the heptathalon, high jump, high hurdles and shot put. As a freshman in 2007, she won the SEC Heptathalon

Championship while also competing in the 100m high hurdles and the high jump in the SEC Championship. While battling a hamstring injury for the most the season in 2008, she overcame her personal records in the high jump, 200m, and the 100m high hurdles at 13.14 seconds.

That stands as fourth all-time for females in school history. By her senior year at USC, she had the second-best heptathalon total by a female in school history, became the NCAA Outdoor Champion and the World University Games Champion of the 100m hurdles in 2011.

Ali took time away from the sport in 2015 with the birth of her son, Titus. She eventually came back and defended her gold in the 2016 World Indoor Championship 60m hurdles in March, 10 months after her son was born.

After her Olympic Trials 100m hurdles race, she said in a post-race interview with NBC-TV, “Honestly it was all God. I prayed for this moment. I’m ecstatic, especially with these two ladies (Rollins and Castlin).” Nia Ali, Brianna Rollins, and Kristi Castlin will be part of the many athletes representing the United States in the Rio Olympic Games next month.

Spotlight On Absecon History Dr. Pitney’s Railroad To Nowhere

F

ebruary, 1851 - In a notion many of the time branded as the "Railroad to Nowhere," one determined man is most credited with bringing the railroad to Atlantic City and county. That man, Dr. Jonathan Pitney, is often referred to as "the father of Atlantic City". It was Dr. Pitney who first saw the possibilities of Atlantic City as a premier resort city. A native of Mendham, NJ, Dr. Pitney settled in Absecon in 1820. His home still exists on Shore Road. The building is in the process of being refurbished, it will be reopening as a bed and breakfast in the spring of 2016. Finding time between treating patients, Dr. Pitney took an active role in the area's civic life.

He was postmaster and recorder of shipwrecks. He led the fight to have Atlantic County divorced from Gloucester County in 1837. He was Atlantic County's delegate to the State Constitutional Convention in 1844. He ran for Congress in 1848.

Dr. Pitney shared his idea with General Enoch Doughty, a successful merchant and landowner. Meeting in Doughty's store on Shore Road in Absecon, they wrote the first draft of a railroad company charter.

One year later, in early March, 1852, New Jersey granted the Camden and Atlantic Railroad Company a charter to operate a railroad to Atlantic City.

There were fifteen stations between Camden and Atlantic City. The railroad, true to the promise of Dr. Jonathan Pitney, created a land boom. Most of all, the railroad brought Atlantic City within the reach of Philadelphians, who no longer needed to endure an all day ride in an open stage coach to reach a bathing beach.

Today, Dr. Pitney's dream, derided at the time as a "railroad to nowhere," has helped make Atlantic City and county the world's most visited tourist destination.

o far, so good. I think. I hope. I pray.

Just in case you have never tried it, praying is “interesting” when you have your fingers crossed.

Fields are plowed; and finally ready for planting! Hallelujah! Just as a brief recap if I may, dear readers: I have gone through numerous tractor issues and quests for parts that would make any Dungeons and Dragons aficionado green with envy.

Then, the actual plowing itself, which was a success despite Momma Rabbit picking a less than ideal place to build her maternity ward/nursery. (Status Update: Baby Bunnies have launched successfully.

They have been seen munching clover and various other greeneries while waiting for me to plant their all you can eat – er… destroy - buffet. However, I have entered into top secret negotiations with the local Raptor’s Union, aka Hawks and Owls. I have also reached out to the local reps for the Vulpe, (fox) and Feline, (feral cat) Unions respectively. It’s the Circle of Life folks, the Circle of Life...)

Even though I have thanked them profusely in person, I would not have been able to get this far without a great bunch

of guys, (does two make a bunch??), who have helped me thus far. They were the ones to get my one tractor up and running as well as getting the fields ready for me.

A public THANK YOU to them! Donny and Derek, you ROCK! But, now, it’s my turn at bat.

The days are now getting shorter.

Yeah, I know...it sucks. Just as we start to really enjoy the warmer weather; it seems to be all too quickly slipping away from us.

More so if you’re a farmer who is already a tad behind, due to circumstances beyond your control.

I will admit it: I got behind with getting in some crops. Can’t really blame myself too much though as I was at the mercy of mechanical and weather conditions. But still... I am a farmer by birth, and these things just naturally happen, and I know and accept this. Doesn’t make it easier mind you. It just boils down to having to rush to gets things in the ground. After that, well, it really is all in Mother Nature’s hands.

Speaking of Mother Nature… does She have to release her Minions of Destruction as soon as I set my first plant in the ground??? You would think that there was absolutely, positively nothing left to eat in

a 25-mile radius of my farm with the way it’s been munched!!

I plant 1,000 strawberry plants, and those blasted varmints mow at least 100 of ‘em down to the nub! Stupid groundhogs… this means war!!! Listen, it’s not like I’m a mean person. I have a heart. I love all animals. I was even into loving sloths decades before it became hip to do so, o.k.?

In fact, while it may be invisible to others of my species, there is this huge neon sign over my head that says, “Hungry?

Need a place to sleep? Sick? Then just make eye contact and you’ll be set for life!”

It’s a sign that every other species on the face of the Earth can easily read.

So I’d have no problem sharing what I’m trying to grow. Honest. But can we at least let the plants grow and, oh…I don’t know… actually produce a crop before all the critters descend like vultures on a zebra’s carcass??

And the groundhogs are just the first wave, good readers. Oh yes! Just the first wave of many! There will be raccoons, squirrels, and deer in the corn, birds in the sunflowers, and more groundhogs in the pumpkins. Fabulous. Just fabulous.

And the thing that just kills me is that they don’t just east one pumpkin. They nibble.

Two bites outta this one and four bites outta that one. If only they would eat an entire ear of corn or one sunflower. I’d be totally cool with that then. But they don’t!

But, you know what? I love it. Ask anyone you know who loves to garden, and you’ll know what I’m talking about but on a much smaller scale. It’s a challenge of Olympic proportions no doubt. From the moment we get our first seed catalog to the first scent of Spring in the air to the last Harvest and everything in between.

So next time you stop at your local roadside farmer’s market and you see the actual farmer who grew everything there, know this: while we may gripe about the weather or varmints or what have you, we love what we do. And we could not imagine living without farming.

After gathering input from your friends and your local pro, and after you’ve identified a few sets that you like, look online for the type of clubs you prefer. You may find much better deals online than you will in a sporting goods store or a local pro shop. However, I can’t stress enough the importance of testing out a set before you make a purchase.

One important aspect of purchasing your first set of clubs is to ensure you are buying perimeter-weighted heads, often referred to as cavity-backed.

They will be more forgiving, due to having an expanded sweet-spot. This type of club distributes the weight in the clubhead more evenly. The types of clubs used by elite players focus on the center of the club. These types of clubs in the hands of beginners (or even golfers with a handicap higher than five) can be frustrating for the player.

So, you’ve spoken to your friends who play golf, as well as the local pro, and you’ve test-driven a variety of clubs. You’ve identified the clubs you

want to buy and now you want to know: How much is this going to cost me? If you are looking to purchase a set of new clubs, there are numerous starter-sets available from $200-$400. These sets usually include a driver and two fairway woods, along with a hybrid (combination iron and wood) and the 5-9 irons, alongside a pitching wedge, a sand wedge, a putter, and a bag.

One way to find clubs at a lower price is to shop around on the Internet for used golf clubs. In the

last year, I’ve bought a Callaway driver and 3-wood; retail price for both: $500.

My cost: $150. Many club manufacturers, much like auto dealers, sell certified, previously-owned clubs. It’s a great way to buy good golf clubs without breaking the piggy bank.

Another way to save money on a new set of clubs is to look at previous year models. Without over-killing the car dealer analogy, there are a variety of quality golf clubs that do not get sold each year and can be purchased a couple of years

after they come to market for a very good price. As an example, last summer my beloved wife bought me a set of Adams hybrids and irons. The 4-6 are hybrids, with graphite shafts. The 7-PW are steel shafts, and it also included a spiff y bag.

They are 2013 models and retailed for $500-$700. Our cost: $169.95.

Hopefully you can follow some of these tips to find the right golf clubs at a price that fits your budget. Just remember: Keep it in the fairway (a good tip for golf and life.)

Ocean City Fishing Club’s First Open House Of The Summer

embers of the Ocean cean City Fishing Club ub (OCFC) will wellcome visitors to o their clubhouse and pier during g the first Open House of the 2016 16 season on Thursday, July 21, from 6 to 8 pm.

The popular event, which is part of the city’s Family Night on the Boardwalk, will include surf-casting demonstrations at the end of the club’s 635-foot pier, a tour of the clubhouse, and a chance to meet the city mascot, Martin Z. Mollusk. “Each year the men and women of our club enjoy this opportunity to showcase an institution with deep roots in the history of Ocean City, and to help an important cause at the same time,� said OCFC president Augie Conte, Jr. In addition to their cameras and walking shoes, visitors to the pier are encouraged to bring non-perishable food that will be donated to the Ocean City Community Food Cupboard. During two Open Houses last year, the club collected a total of 335 pounds of food and $198 in cash from 1,874 individuals.

The Ocean City Fishing Club is located on the Boardwalk between 14th and 15th streets.

A second Open House is set for Thursday, August 4, from 6 fo to 8 pm.

The OCFC began its summer Open Houses in 2013 to m help celebrate the 100th anniverhel sary of its founding. It is the oldest, continuously operating fishing club in the nation.
