A home is more than a house

Note from the editor

"H

ome" is one word that encompasses so much. Home is a haven, a refuge, a feeling. It is so much more than a physical space. It is where we belong.

Whether we are with our spouse, our children or fur baby or enjoying being alone, home is where we feel 100% accepted and comfortable.

The physical aspect of the home varies throughout different lifestyles, cultures, and life experiences. But for each of you, I hope that whatever the physical space looks like, that the feeling you experience while you're there is one of comfort, safety, and acceptance.

I feel fortunate because my home has all of those attributes. However, it is now approaching 20 years old and needs A LOT of work from the structure of the house to the appliances. With so much work needed,

we've considered cutting our losses and moving.

"Maybe closer to the beach woukd be nice," I've wondered out loud. As I watch my big dogs that absolutely love my pool and fenced in yard with so much room to play, I begin to doubt that thought process.

We bought the house in 2005 at the height of the market and to be honest, I am not even sure it's worth more than we owe.

Of course, the other factor is my adult son who lives with autism and would feel anxious about relocating.

I also have two adult daughters who grew up here and this home holds so many cherished memories.

Needless to say, moving closer to the beach remains a daydream and we will roll up our sleeves and begin one by one, the much needed renovations.

seeing the colorful mums, cornstalks and scarecrows placed carefully in yards and on porches. There is something exciting about the change of seasons that always lifts my spirits. Before we know it, the leaves will begin changing colors and there will a new chill in the night air.

Many of the yearly Fall Fun venues are up and running, like Terror in the Junkyard and R & J Farms. Both offer family fun for all ages.

Weather with Nor'easter Nick

T

he two big headlines seem to be how active the tropics have become and how abnormally warm our weather has been. Yes - it’s true on both fronts. We are now up to Lorenzo with our storms. Most of them you probably haven’t heard about because they’ve been “fish storms”. Dorian is the only one that significantly impacted anyone. The rest? Not really much to talk about. Mind you we are still technically at the peak of hurricane season so though nothing has impacted us, it doesn’t mean we are totally out of the woods.

On the warm weather front, we probably won’t see temperatures return to normal and stay there for at least another 10 days. We’ve got a strong area of high pressure in control of our pattern. We will continue to see 80° days. The latest 80° recorded in our area was November 15th of 78, so there is precedent for it. We call it “never ending summer”! Stay cool!

I

donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know about you, but the word change invokes a lot of different emotions in me. Sometimes, the thoughts of change are good. Other times, the idea of change can be scary. You know what Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m talking about.

Change is coming and you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know what to expect. Have you noticed the last few days and nights? The days have remained relatively warm, but as the sun sets, the temperature turn crisp and cool. Change is literally 'in the air'. You may love summer. Or maybe fall is your favorite time of year. It doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t matter. Either way, change is coming. We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop it. So we have to prepare to adapt.

When it comes to the season, we pull out the warmer clothes. We begin to turn off the air conditioner at night and it wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be long before we turn on the heat.

Just like with the seasons, our lives are constantly going through change. Careers evolve or change.

Relationships grow closer or drift apart. Our children grow up and family dynamics â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;change'. So, I guess the question I want to ask you today is this. Are you prepared and equipped for changes coming your way? Because change is inevitable.

Three things to consider and be aware of as you think about change.

First recognize where you are in any given situation or circumstance in your life. Second, get a vision of where you want to go and what it will look like. And third, recognize what it will take to get there and then equip yourself to make the journey.

The reality is, you will always need to make adjustments along the way. But you have to start with a preferred ending and educated assessment of where change will take you.

I recently saw someone post on her Facebook page that she was in a 'change kind of mode'. She wrote about intentionally making decisions to head in a deliberate direction of change.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve all heard that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. You want to see results in your life?

Realize that some things, possibly a lot of things need to change. And you accomplish that by laying out a plan of growth. Whatever area or areas in your life you want to see change, pinpoint what it will take to see growth in that area. Ask yourself, what changes do I need to make in order to get to my preferred future? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about being intentional. Embrace the change. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not as scary as you may think.

Discover Principle Academy Charter School

hen you pull up to the Principle Academy Charter (PAC) School in Egg Harbor Township, you are greeted by a mural boasting a diverse group of cheerful cartoon faces along the outside wall of the school. That joy follows you through the front door, down the art filled hallways and throughout each classroom of this refreshing learning institution. The students, teachers and administration have come together to create a very special educational oasis.

PAC is headed by a collective of some of the area’s brightest out of the box thinkers. Dr. Peter Caporilli, PAC Founder and also Founder and CEO of Polymath Achievement Charters, the management company hired to run Principle Academy Charter, is looking to provide a well rounded education to children in Atlantic County. “We are the standard. We want to be better than

the local schools.” he said in a recent interview. “Local school is the alternative to our school.” Recently, the school procured a grant that allowed them to purchase laptops for every single student to use during school. Laptops, coupled with smart boards will give the children a tech advantage in the future.

“What differentiates our school is that our school focuses on the individual student/learner.

PAC parents are very involved with PAC activities and events. They are happy to roll up their sleeves and man a table or assist with a football game! This participation is welcomed with open arms.

Even though there is a waitlist to get in, the school is always looking to the future. The board keeps moving forward in order to better the school.

Dr. Caporilli sees that “ the business challenges of a charter require business mind and acumen to over come.” Many new things are on the horizon for this growing school. It will be exciting to see what happens next for this up and coming Charter School.

ince 1964, the Humane Society of Ocean City has been helping to transform the lives of countless shelter pets and their new forever home owners throughout our area. History states the shelter was started by two young kids who cared for stray dogs and cats in a garage; 55 years later, they are a non-profit, o-kill animal shelter, with the mission of providing the highest level of compassion and service to our animal friends. Their educational and innovative initiatives have earned them a spot as one of the top shelters in the country in 2002, according to Cat Fancy Magazine, and 2014 Shelter of the Year by Purina ProPlan.

There have been occasional domestic rabbit and turtle cared for in the facility. There are many laughing smiles shared as everyone talks to each animal with words of kindness, encouragement and praise, ensuring each animal is addressed by their name.

The shelter can accommodate up to twelve dogs at any given time.

Phil Bellucci says the mission is to get the dogs ready for their new forever home. “There’s a certain sense of passion and accomplishment.

We’re all about enriching the life of the animals that come in.”

In addition to adoption services, the Humane Society is also a full-service veterinary center, providing essential treatment and medical services such as spaying and neutering, wellness care, dental check-ups and x-rays. Those who adopt from the shelter are offered a 10% discount on treatment for the lifetime of that pet. They also provide animal control and rescue services for Ocean City.

As a non-profit, The Humane Society of Ocean City relies on donations from the community. A variety of fundraising events are held throughout the year, including Steve & Cookie’s 22nd Annual Dog Show in Margate, held last Sunday. Dozens of canines, and their owners, showed up for the event which featured categories from most handsome and prettiest to obedient and best dressed. The organization recently held a Funday at Playland Castaway Cove, where guests were able to enjoy amusement rides at a reduced price, while helping our wonderful animal shelter raise over $10,000.

Last April, the organization raised $4,000 at its Grateful Pets concert, and up to 30 skaters took to Ocean City Skatepark this past June for their Skato for Kato fundraiser. On Friday, October 18th, HSOC will be hosting its first ever Woofstock concert inside the Adare Ballroom at Josie Kelly’s. The night

Hailey Gould leads on and off the field

ven at the tender age of just 10, Hailey Gould had to shoulder a lot of responsibility. With both her parents, Laura Gould and Michael Abelson, working — and sometimes multiple jobs — Hailey was asked to look after younger sister Hannah, nine years her junior, on more than one occasion. Gould, now a 17-year-old Mays Landing resident and captain of the Atlantic County Institute of Technology girls soccer team, says having to mature quickly and take on adult tasks before even becoming a teenager helped mold her into the leader she is today.

"I remember throughout the years, I'd be 10 years old and watching her. I had to take on a lot of responsibility.

When I wasn't playing soccer and had free time, I'd be here watching her while my friends would be out," said Gould, whose RedHawks have gotten off to a 2-6 start in the very competitive Cape-Atlantic League American Conference. "In retrospect, she did have to get dragged to a lot of early morning tournaments, and I give her credit for that. Looking after her has helped me mature. As soon as an assignment is given I want to get it done, I don't like procrastination.

I try to get things done as soon as possible."

ACIT's soccer program is now led by Jason Embs, who is trying to build a foundation for a program that has seen several head coaches in its brief history, and Gould is putting more bricks into the wall that was started by players such as Tess Carty and Anna Attardi. "I came here as a freshman, mainly for education. The soccer team didn't have much of a foundation, but it was fun because I love the girls on the team. Freshman year I only scored four goals but sophomore year I scored about 16, so I've definitely grown throughout my four years and quickly adapted to the style of play (on varsity). It's been fun, I've grown and learned a lot from the girls," she said. "Coming into sophomore year, I got thrown the captain's band, so that was quite interesting being a young captain. But I quickly adapted to it. One of the things I realized from freshman year was I really took losing to heart, it would ruin my whole day and I would be so upset when we lost.

But the girls taught me that it's going to happen, you're going to lose some and win some. Eventually, I learned how to have fun with the sport and they've really taught me how to enjoy it.

"I expected to just be an average player, be in the books for four years and eventually fade away as time goes on," added Gould, who now has 40 goals and 32 assists during her high school career. "I never expected to have a lasting impact (on this program). I'm extremely proud. To be able to do this, and do it with these girls who back me up on everything, and still being able to have fun along the way is really great."

Gould says she's focusing on doing everything she can to help the RedHawks improve their spot in the CAL standings, and when her career ends she'll then turn her attention to playing college soccer and pursuing a nursing degree at Rutgers-Camden University. She'll have the unique opportunity to attend college with her mom, a social worker, who is studying for her masters degree in psychology at the same university.

"I did get a few Division II offers, but ultimately I wanted to stay closer to home and committed to Rutgers-Camden. It fits what I want to do with my future because I want to be in nursing, plus, my mom goes there now, so it's a perfect fit. That will be interesting (going to school with her). She's a social worker who is going for her masters in psychology," Gould said. "Growing up, that was always what I strove for. When I was little, I would go to college games and think, 'that's what I want to do. I want to be that, I want to play college soccer.' To be able to do that — even though it's at the Division III level — this is what I wanted and everything I've dreamed of, so it's an amazing thing. I've prepared a lot for that, it's constantly been on my mind. Their assistant coach (Kelvin Murray) has been a trainer of mine for a long time, ever since I was a little girl. He was the one who really opened me to the idea of going to Rutgers-Camden."

Easy Meals for Busy Weeknights

I

n my last Vegging at the Shore article, I wrote about how helpful weekly menu planning can be. Did you get started on that? Trust me, it will change your life. It might seem daunting to come up with five or so meals for the week and food shop for them all at once, but once you get into a groove you will be thankful! It’s not a fun feeling to be looking through your refrigerator at 4pm wondering how you will feed all the hungry mouths in your house. So now that we have an understanding about the importance of meal planning, let discuss some of my go-to easy recipes!

There are a bunch of dishes that I can make without a recipe that I know everyone in my house will enjoy. Many of the ingredients can be

kept in the pantry or freezer, making them even easier to prepare. One of these recipes is toasted ravioli. We fell in love with toasted ravioli when we lived in St. Louis years ago and I came up with a healthier and easier version that doesn’t involve deep frying. Simply pick up a box of ravioli at the supermarket (I usually go with spinach and cheese), dip each one in egg and then breadcrumbs before placing them on a baking sheet and bake them for about 15 minutes at 350. Serve alongside heated marinara sauce and everyone will go back for seconds!

Tacos and quesadillas are another easy weeknight meal that all of my family members love. While my kids eat meat and love a good beef taco, my husband and I do not so I have come up with plenty of delicious vegetarian filling options like refried beans (homemade in the Instant Pot are so good!), cauliflower rice with black beans and quinoa cooked with vegetables and enchilada sauce. Tacos are great because

they make for great lunch leftovers!

Soup and grilled cheese never gets old. You might be thinking, I haven’t made soup since last winter and it’s still 80 degrees out. I hear you, but we eat soup all year long. It’s hearty, inexpensive and a great side dish. Our favorites are tomato basil, lentil and broccoli cheddar. For grilled cheese, the possibilities are endless!

I typically take any vegetable, roast or sauté it and add it to bread with a tasty cheese like provolone or gouda.

As I’m still getting vegetables from my weekly farm share at B&B Farms, this is a great way to use up produce.

The Taste of Italy is in Northfield

Veggie burgers are another of my weeknight easy staples. I make big batches of different varieties like beet, lentil and chickpea burgers for the freezer. I transfer a couple to the refrigerator in the morning to defrost and grill them alongside some potatoes and vegetables. If you want to skip the homemade part, I’ve gotten some great frozen veggie burgers from ShopRite that will work in a pinch when I don’t have any homemade ones in the freezer.

Busy weeknights don’t have to call for drive-thru meals. Keep some easy meals in your freezer or basic ingredients in your pantry so you can feel good about what you are feeding your family. Making New Habits

I

t’s that time of year again! Change is happening and new habits are forming.

Packing lunch, either for school, or for work each day, can seem like a grind, and a thankless task. But if you adopt a couple of habits along with creating a "lunch packing station" within your kitchen, then the whole process of making these lunches can get streamlined, and much easier for all involved.

Additional advantages of using this method is that it allows more people to participate in packing lunches each day, so the burden doesn't fall all on one person. It also allows for more options and choices, within reason, to those eating the lunches to there's less complaining about what's packed.

The first step in making the process of packing lunches easier each day is to plan ahead with a lunch meal plan, so you know what you're going to pack for lunches each day for that coming week.

You should strive for some variation, so no one gets too bored with what they're provided for lunch, but you don't need to think of something new every single day of the school year.

I suggest making a list of easily packable lunch foods that fit into various categories, such as various types of sandwiches, different fruits and veggies, drinks, desserts or treats, etc., that are easily packable and that your family likes, and then just rotate through the lists over and over.

That way you don't get stuck in a rut, always buying and then packing the exact same things, but you're not trying to reinvent the wheel either.

Instead, you can look at these lists each week before going to the grocery, decide what you'll serve

for the week within each category, and make sure you stock up on what you need to have for packing the week's lunches.

This provides the best of both worlds. It gives everyone some options for what they'll eat that day, so they'll actually enjoy their lunch as opposed to bringing it home uneaten, but it also limits the variety so there aren't arguments or too much dallying while preparing lunch each morning, and it keeps it simple for planning and prepping ahead.

Anyone that knows me knows that I preach organization for success. I suggest you purchase the food for the week's lunches you'll also want to make time in your weekly schedule (such as on Sunday nights) to prep ahead certain components of these packed lunches.

This preparation ahead of time doesn't have to be elaborate. In fact, so you'll actually do it, regularly, I recommend you keep it simple.

The steps you take will help you save time later, during the packing process, by getting certain tasks done in batches instead of right before packing the lunches each day.

These prep ahead tasks could include washing or cutting produce, and/or dividing and bagging up certain treats or snacks, ahead of time, for example. Any steps you can do ahead of time to make the packing process easier will save you a lot of time and hassle later.

Once you’ve got the two habits established, of planning lunches ahead of time, and also prepping some of the components of the lunches ahead of time, you're ready to create your lunch packing stations within your kitchen.

This requires that you designate a spot in both your refrigerator and pantry where all these items are gathered, so no one is searching for what they've got as choices for lunch each day.

You will need to have one to two bins in your pantry, and another one to two in your refrigerator

that hold the items you've decided will be packed in lunches that week.

Inside the refrigerator your bins will hold things like ready made sandwiches, baggies of fresh fruit or veggies, cheese sticks, yogurts, or sliced luncheon meat and cheeses they can add to bread to make a sandwich themselves.

Inside your pantry bins you will add things like trail mix, nuts, chips, crackers, cookies, and other non-perishable additions or snacks for lunches.

You'll also want to include a bin for drink options in the appropriate place, depending on whether the drinks need to be refrigerated, such as for water, milk or juice boxes.

The final step in the process of streamlining the packing of school or work lunches is to organize your lunch boxes and other lunch packing supplies into one area, so everyone knows where to grab the items they'll need to help them pack their lunch for the day.

To do this designate a specific place to put food containers, thermoses, napkins, utensils, and lunch bags or boxes within the kitchen, and always put them back there after they're brought home and cleaned, so they're ready for the next use.

This school year can run smoothly and kids stay stay healthy all year long just by following a few simple tips in re-organization. Have a great school year this year!

Views from the Shore

ersonally, I try to exercise and remain active by climbing stairs on the step machine, occasionally trading an office desk for an MMA cage, and participate in spin classes at Greate Bay Racquet and Fitness. (These days spin’s more off than on, and Tracy recently commented on my absence!) After class one day, I ran into Shore’s Dr Lisa Iucci. I had not seen her in a while, and I noticed that she was expecting. After the class, I was wiped out, whereas she seemed as if she could go another 45 minutes!

She was truly inspiring, so I wondered if there were something that could be done to promote fitness for others who are expecting. What better way than to do a group spin class with even more Shore employees? More than two dozen Shore

employees signed up for the class, including Dr. Iucci, and fellow clinicians Amy Riordan and Elizabeth Klein. This spin class led to us asking Dr. Robert H. Debbs about the benefits of exercising for soon to be mothers, and the do’s and don’ts about exercising. It was a fantastic experience for all of us, and I would like to share this story with you.

Exercising While You’re Expecting Being pregnant can bring on a roller coaster of emotions and enter moms-to-be into a minefield of well-intentioned but sometimes confusing and contradictory advice from family and friends. Every expectant mom wants to do what is absolutely best for their baby and for their own health but managing what is sound advice from what might be potentially harmful can be difficult.

Whether to exercise or not during pregnancy is one of those topics that just about every person will offer an opinion. Dr. Robert H. weighed in on expectant mothers and exercise. “We advise most women to continue non-contact sport exercise during pregnancy,” said Dr. Debbs. “It improves outcomes like lower cesarean rates and less macrosomia.”

Fetal macrosomia is the term describing a newborn who is significantly larger than average. According to mayoclinic.org a baby diagnosed with fetal macrosomia has a birth weight greater than 8 lb.

Dr. Debbs added that some adjustments are recommended like keeping the expectant mother’s heart rate less than 150 while exercising. He also advised that all women with a potential high risk pregnancy should consult their obstetrician.

For three expectant mothers, all with Shore Physicians Group: Dr. Lisa Iucci along with Advance Practice Nurse Amy Riordan and Physician’s Assistant Elizabeth Klein, exercise is an important part of keeping themselves healthy and preparing for the arrival of their babies. All three of these health care professionals took part in a spin class for Shore Medical Center staff at Greate Bay Racquet and Fitness in early September.

Dr. Lisa Iucci is expecting her second child in early October. She said that in discussion with her physician during her first pregnancy she was advised that it was okay to continue the exercise regimen she had been doing but was advised not to pick up anything new. “The only real restriction is how you are feeling during exercise,” said Dr. Iucci.

“Pay attention to what your body is telling you.” She continued her normal exercise routine up until the day prior to going into labor in week 39. Although Dr. Iucci said she had nothing to compare it to, but one of her motivations for working out was to help during labor and during the recovery. “I do think it makes a big difference,” concluded Dr. Iucci.

Amy Riordan, MSN, APN is a family nurse practitioner with Shore Physicians Group in Ocean City and expecting her second child in January. She said exercising through her pregnancy was discussed and said her physician touched on the importance of remaining active during pregnancy. “It was encouraged to continue with my exercise routine during pregnancy but to avoid overexertion and not to push it if I ever dizzy or faint,” said Amy Riordan.

Spin was not an every week event but she said mixing a spin class in

with other exercise such as light weight lifting, running and elliptical was her routine. She is exercising through her pregnancy and with her first had planned a trip to the gym the day she went into labor, quickly scuttling any other plans. The family practitioner said she does think she was able to rebound quicker and return to her pre-pregnancy weight by remaining active throughout pregnancy.

Elizabeth Klein, PA-C is a physician’s assistant with Shore Physicians Group Surgical Division and expecting her third child in December. She participated in the recent spin class and said it is something she has done before but it is not her usual form of exercise. She discussed exercising with her physician during her first pregnancy and was told she could continue with her exercise and to listen to her body.

During her first pregnancy she did Zumba, running, elliptical, and circuit training up to 36 weeks and walked daily thereafter. Currently she is doing high intensity interval training, elliptical and she continues running and circuit training. Like her colleagues Elizabeth Klein said she believes a combination of exercising while pregnant, a return to light exercise six weeks post-partum and breastfeeding helped return her body to pre-pregnancy state quickly.

For women who are expecting, times may have changed. “I think that old saying, ‘eating for two’ has been replaced with a much healthier model in women today who are pregnant. Education on diet and calorie requirements during pregnancy are more easily accessible and therefore women are aiming to have a ‘healthier’ pregnancy. I do believe the addition of exercise provides both physical and mental benefits before, during and after pregnancy,” concluded Elizabeth Klein.

Boogie Nights is located in Atlantic City in Tropicana Resort, (The Quarter) So it's a Thursday night and I am sitting at home with nothing to do. Instead of reruns of Big Bang Theory I call up a friend and say something like…. “The good people at Boogie Nights have been asking me to check out their 90’s Night.”

We get here about 10:30pm thinking that we are early and to our surprise... the party at Boogie Nights is going full steam. The crowd is packing the dance floor. few words about hiking.

When planning our trip cross country to visit as many of the National Parks as we could, hiking was something my wife and I were looking forward to. My concept of hiking was a Thoreauesque walk; a saunter or amble, if you will. A casual pace through a mossy floored forest where I can be enveloped in the soft embrace of Mother Nature.

While parts of some of the hikes may have some semblance to that notion, what I recall is an experience closer to a Slayer concert. We arrived at the High Country Lodge in Wyoming, aptly named because it was situated at about 9600 feet

above my sixty-something years of sea level base camp. My wife and I took a little walk to acclimate ourselves and after just a couple easy miles were noticeably winded but I felt it was manageable. Our hosts suggested an “easy” hike the next day up to Medicine Wheel, a sacred ground of local Native Americans for thousands of years. It was a smooth wide trail that after a couple miles seemed to go up to the clouds. People further up the hike appeared like miniatures. I was laboring and after a while a look around revealed that there were no peaks higher than I was and I was still climbing. My wife asked if I wanted to turn around which I declined. I made it to the top and the view was breathtaking both in the figurative and the literal sense.

The sacred ground was a roped off circle with remnants of Native American offerings over many years. There were also kerchiefs tied to the ropes surrounding the circle. I had a kerchief tied to my wrist as I often do during hikes or

walks which I took off and added it as my offering. As if I didn’t learn, the next hike was in Glacier National Park at a more modest 6700 feet of elevation. This hike promised a beautiful vista at the top of Avalanche Mountain. It started out innocent enough with a gently inclined boardwalk like pathway to lull this unsuspecting hiker into complacency. Gradually, this gave way to a steeper, rougher terrain but since it bordered a narrow chasm with swift running water, I was distracted by its beauty and numerous photographic opportunities. At this point, let me say that I am not a fleet of foot hiker. I see younger hikers fairly prancing by.

Older, grisly, sinewy hikers navigate the terrain like mountain goats. At six feet two inches tall and north of a couple hundred pounds, I am more of a plodder. To use a horse metaphor, if they are like Tennessee Walkers, I am like a Clydesdale.

Eventually, we reached the summit to reveal a huge turquoise colored lake surrounded by high mountains

some still with snow near their peaks. One of the most beautiful scenes I have ever witnessed. We rested, took selfies, other photos and began the long trek back.

The next hike was in the Grand Tetons National Park. The Grand Teton mountains looked different than the other mountains we have seen. They appeared to us as jagged, threatening, looming giants seemingly to challenge all those who choose to climb their flanks.

Again, an easy hike was suggested by the park ranger. I told my wife, my experience with hiking is over and I did not want to undertake yet another exhausting trek. Knowing me well, she said she was going and I did not have to go. She was going to be fine. co-worker of mine used to say that at TV 40 every time the calendar officially turned to Fall.

“It’s Fall Dog…!!!”

Since I last wrote, the Eagles have lost two in a row and are heading to Green Bay on a short week. The Phillies are going to be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs any day now. The Flyers have all their players signed and have started training camp.

It’s mostly quiet with the Sixers, and high school football is well underway.

From the entertainment world, l still haven’t seen “Ad Astra” the new Brad Pitt movie. I’m excited to also return to “Downton”. Plus, the Fall TV season is starting to debut. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: ●● After rallying to beat the Redskins in Week One, the Eagles have now

lost two close games and take a 1-2 record into Lambeau Field and a game with the Packers on Thursday night. Injuries are the big story for the Birds as key players like DeSean Jackson & Alshon Jeffrey have missed both the Falcons game and the Lions game. Thankfully, Carson Wentz is NOT on the injury list, but he has to have some weapons to throw the ball to…!

On defense, the secondary continues to get burned, and the pass rush is virtually non-existant. As I write this, the team only has TWO sacks on the season. Tim Jernigan and Andrew Sendejeo.

That’s it. Nothing for Fletcher Cox, or Brandon Graham, or Vinny Curry. Veteran players who are getting paid to get to the opposing quarterback. For just the second time in their last 32 games, and for only the seventh time in Jim Schwartz’s three-plus years as the defensive coordinator, the Eagles failed to register a sack in the 2724 loss to the Lions. To me, the Eagles are missing key guys like Michael Bennett & Chris Long.

One veteran I would never question is Malcolm Jenknins. He almost single-handedly won the Li-

ons game with a blocked field goal in the final minute. That was the good news. The bad news was, he got flagged for a block in the back on the play as well. Instead of having the ball near the 20, the Birds got it near the 50, but still, with half the field to go, they should’ve been able to mount a better effort than they did. The game ended on an offensive pass interference call on Darren Sproles, and then a drop at the two yard line by J.J. Arcega-Whiteside.

Let’s talk about those drops.

Some folks had the number as high as seven against the Lions.

Nelson Agholor had two touchdowns, but he also had another key drop. Dallas Goedert dropped a sure touchdown catch. Drops will KILL a team, especially one that’s already making mistakes with turnovers, etc.

My last item on the Eagles is that they have to keep an eye on Dallas as the Cowboys are off to a 3-0 start. The Cowboys haven’t really been pressured yet in wins over the Giants, Redskins & Dolphins, but they could easily be 4-1 or even 5-0 when they host the Eagles on “Sunday Night Football” on October 20th.

Here’s a tidbit for you Giants fans out there. Daniel Jones had a remarkable rookie debut last week against the Bucs. Down 28-10 at the half, he rallied the G-men to victory in thrilling fashion. His QB draw in the 4th quarter to put the Giants ahead was a thing of beauty and left me saying “Eli couldn’t do that…!” Of course, they needed the Bucs kicker to choke on a field goal for it to stand up, and they might’ve lost Saiquon Barkley to a foot injury for up to eight weeks, but hey, Giants fans, you’re not going to go “Oh-and-16”…!!!

We’ll move on to the Phillies now as all signs point to them missing the playoffs…again. How about this sobering stat? The Phillies, Padres & Marlins are the only three National League teams to NOT make the playoffs after 2011. I don’t know about you, but seeing the Phillies lumped in with the Marlins & Padres in any list is not good.

Simply put, the Phillies need to find some starting pitching before next season. Bryce Harper was ok for his first season, with flashes of superstar. Mostly just okay. J.T. Realmuto was the Phillies MVP in my opinion and the team needs to do what it can to lock him up to a long-term deal.

Should Gabe Kapler go? That’s the other big question everyone is asking me these days. “Will he go?” is a better question. I don’t see the Phillies making a change, unless the Cubs miss the playoffs and get rid of Joe Maddon. I think Maddon could be the perfect blend of analytics and old-school baseball that would satisfy the fan base and still allow Matt Klentak to say the team is moving forward analytically more than the old school ways. Phillies, Padres & Marlins are the only three National League teams NOT to make the playoffs since 2011. Ugh. And then there’s my beloved Flyers. The Orange & Black are back for preseason. They open the season for real in the Czech Republic on Friday October 4th.

In the meantime, winger Travis Konecny has signed a six-year $33 million dollar contract extension and back using his speed to create offense.

On-the-roster-bubble forward Morgan Frost has a groin injury & planned third-line center Nolan Patrick is also doubtful for the opener in Prague on October 4th.

That means you could see German Rubtsov make the team out of camp. Or, center Mikhail Vorobyev is a dark horse candidate.

Oh, and happy birthday to GRITTY, the Flyers mascot. He turns one this week. What a first year for the orange, fuzzy beast. He was mocked in the beginning, but set the tone early when the Pittsburgh Penguins tweeted out “Ok…lol”. He answered with “Sleep with one eye open tonight bird…!!!” That was Gritty’s first personality tweet and he has endeared himself to Philly fans with antics like streaking at the outdoor

game, mixing it up with kids in the between-periods Mites-on-Ice sessions, visiting sick children in the hospital, becoming a JEOPARDY clue, generally breaking the internet several times. I think Gritty is here to stay…! (I still wish the team was good enough on its own NOT to need a Gritty, but that’s another column) In high school football, the big win last week was by St. Augustine as they beat St. Joseph in Hammonton. The Wildcats are always a favorite and it was a huge victory by the Hermits to not only win, but do it on St. Joe’s home field. Holy Spirit is off to a huge start as well, after a season opening loss to a powerhouse from Delaware. Other teams to keep an eye on include Mainland with their outstanding freshman running back and Ocean City who has put up some record numbers through the first three games.

games…! That hasn’t happened for the past 36 seasons.

From the entertainment world, I still need to see “Ad Astra” with Brad Pitt. Plus, now they’ve put out the “Downton Abbey” movie and I have to see that as well.

I loved the Crawleys and binged watched the entire series on PBS when it ran originally. Can’t wait to see Carson & Mr. Bates and others again on the big screen. ●● Lastly, the Fall TV season has begun. I don’t see myself taking on a lot of new shows. I watch “Survivor”, and “Amazing Race”, along with “Blue Bloods” & “Madam Secretary” on CBS. I’m still loyal to “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC, and the FOX shows always start early because of baseball, so there’s a new season of “9-1-1” that just started. One new show I will give a chance to is called “Emergence” on ABC. The series debut is on September 24th, so catch up if you need to. The reason I am more interested in this one than normal is because they filmed exteriors in Barnegat and

if you look closely, you can see the Barnegat Lighthouse in the open for the show and several shots.

Of course, the show is set in Long Island, so you have to just KNOW that it’s good old New Jersey standing in for New York, but hey, at least “Old Barney” is getting some love…!!!

↘Continued from 22 consented to accompany her. The hike was supposed to be a mile and a half out after which we would be treated to a wonderous view of the waterfall. I have a GPS app on my phone which I consult to mark our progress and of course, the elevation. We were over a mile into our hike on a trail that was about a foot and a half wide with a crumbled s ha l e ro ck mountain on our left and a sheer drop on our right.

I was in the l ea d w h e n my wife told me to look up ahead and about 20 yards in front of us stood a moose and her calf blocking the trail. It was a standoff. I took out my whistle which is to be used to scare bears away and started to blow on it.

The only effect I observed was the twitching of the moose’s ears.

People started to line up behind us wondering what the hold up was when the moose and her calf started walking towards us. One of the hikers called out “We must go up!” My wife and I clawed our way up the shale face with me sliding down a foot for every couple feet I went up until my position was stable. I clung to the mountain in my best Spiderman impersonation. We heard the hoofbeats and watched

as the animals trotted by barely a few feet from where we sat. With the crisis narrowly averted we continued our climb. We had already gone two and a half miles on what was supposed to be a mile and a half hike. I felt like I was breathing through a coffee stirrer straw when we happened upon t wo young hikers coming towards us. I asked if we were almost there and their looks gave me the answer.

We tur ned around and star ted the t wo and a half mile slog back down the mountain.

In retrospect, the hikes were beautiful.

The landscapes although sometimes viewed t h r o u g h tunnel vision, were spectacular and I do not regret going on them one bit. But hiking for me is going to be on the boardwalks, beaches and at the Egg Harbor Township Nature Reserve, a little closer to sea level.

Finally, our Federal and State Governments are Addressing the Issue of e-Cigarettes and Vaping

any years ago, a late, great dear friend of mine came to our broadcasting studio to

show me something that was called an electronic cigarette. When he puffed on it, a blue light shined at the tip where the ash of a regular cigarette would glow.

It was designed to mimic the "pleasure," the experience of smoking. It was supposed to help you to stop smoking. Also, as my friend exhaled, there was a pronounced cloud of smoke emitted.

He was so confident that it was safe. I was skeptical from the beginning. I asked, "What are the contents that you are inhaling and how can it be safe"? I have been fiercely and vocally opposed to the e-cigarette from the first time I saw it in action.

It's now called vaping. It's a dangerous epidemic. And, young adults and children are being attracted to it.

The system is being used for nicotine delivery and tragically, it's also being misused to smoke marijuana and other drugs.

The flavorings are also a big problem. The vaping craze is fueled by the fact that it has been largely unregulated to date by the federal and state governments.

Vaping has now led to deaths and illnesses. The liquid turns into vapor and is drawn in to the user's mouth.

The false premise is that because nothing is burned, that it is safer because the user is not inhaling the many harmful compounds found in the smoke of cigarettes.

A small study was performed in 2016. The conclusion was that the

nicotine vaping products can cause lung inflammation and lung tissue damage. In some cases the damage is permanent. They also concluded that COPD developments is associated with this use.

A 2017 study on animals and e-cigarettes yielded that researchers found that exposure to e-cigarette vapor led to DNA and gene-level changes that may increase the risk of lung cancer.

It seemed to me from the beginning that cigarettes vs. e-cigarettes are akin to the scenario, from the frying pan into the fire.

No doubt, there are many more harmful chemicals in a tobacco cigarette versus the fewer chemicals present in an e-cigarette. However, the vapor bypasses the human digestive system processes and is introduced in a (dangerous) super-charged manner.

A number of experts have concluded that this is why we are now hearing about people dying and being placed on ventilators after e-cigarette inhalation exposure. Some Doctors have come forward and stated that the lung damage created is permanent.

I was very pleased when President Donald Trump recently announced that the federal government will be fast-tracking the abolition of flavorings. It may ultimately prove to not be Constitutional to limit adults, who choose to vape, however, because children are doing this at alarming levels, we have to do something about this.

Immediately following President Trump's announcement, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy stepped-up and announced the formation of a Committee that will have only a few weeks to submit recommendations to address the vaping issue.

Before anyone starts to vape, it's important to understand what you are exposing yourself to. The chemicals found in e-cigarettes are known as "e-juice." The American Lung Association has determined that using electronic cigarettes, especially the flavored varieties, can lead to "popcorn lung."

"Popcorn Lung" gets its name from exposure to a chemical called diacetyl, which was commonly used in certain food products such as popcorn, to give it that rich, buttery flavor when you microwave cook it.

The dangers of this chemical first became known when factory workers in popcorn factories experienced respiratory complications after being exposed to it by inhaling it in the workplace.

"Popcorn Lung" is a scarring of the airway, due to inflammation. It attacks the bronchioles, which are the smallest airways of the lung. As the lung scars, it also narrows, causing difficulties with breathing.

Ultimately, it leads to lung damage.

There are treatments to help manage and limit the symptoms, however, there is presently no cure for "popcorn lung" and it is considered to be a life-threatening condition.

Some people may develop popcorn lung after transplant surgery, but it may take months to years to develop.

The most common signs and symptoms of popcorn lung include: ●● Wheezing that is not related to another health condition, such as bronchitis or asthma. ●● Dry cough. ●● Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing deeply, especially with physical activity. ●● Unexplained exhaustion. ●● Rapid breathing. ●● Persistent skin, eye, mouth, or nose irritation if caused by a chemical.

If you are experiencing breathing difficulties, please seek immediate medical attention.

The dangers of diacetyl were discovered in the early 2000's. Most product manufacturers stopped using it. However, many (probably most) e-cigarettes still contain this harmful chemical.

A 2015 study of flavored e-cigarettes concluded that 39 out of 51 that they tested, contained diacetyl.

This same study also determined that most of the flavorings also contained the toxic chemicals acetoin and 2,3 pentanedione.

This whole vaping industry is still very "new." E-cigarettes were around for a number of years before finally being placed under the under the oversight of the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2016.

More research must be done about the potential harmful affects of e-cigarettes and vaping. It's hard to regulate adults from consuming a legal product of their choosing, even if it is

known to be harmful; i.e. cigarettes and alcohol.

However, strict regulations must be implemented to keep these vaping products out of the mouths of children.

Dr. Bob Zlotnick is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Atlantic Prevention Resources. Bob and I have been talking (on-air) about the potential dangers of vaping for years.

Finally, this issue is taking its place on center stage in America. Sadly, only because people (typically children and young adults) are dying or becoming sick.

To all parents who read this week's column, please take a good, hard look at whether your children are using or misusing vaping products.

It's also important to note that the e-cigarette delivery system is also being used to inhale other drugs. This is a potential fatal mistake. By super heating and turning drugs instantly

into vapor, the inhalation/high concentration affect can result in death.

The people who do this, love the high. The vapor bypasses of the human bodies filtering processes and the drug goes right to work in a super-charged manner. The high is higher and the dangers are incalculable.

This is a very important national discussion that has finally taken its rightful place. Please pay attention.

Get engaged. You just may save the life of your child or other loved one.

Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City “Tee Up” for their annual Golf Fore Kids Event at Linwood Country Club

he Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City hopes to hit a hole in one at this year's very worthy Golf Fore Kids event. Over 100 organizations have thrown their hat in the ring, or should I say clubs onto the green, to take part in helping to raise money for the underprivileged youth in our community.

This exciting event will take place from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm at the esteemed Linwood Country Club located at 500 Shore Rd, in Linwood.

This year's Golf Fore Kids Event will kick off with some delicious grub for lunch, where there will be masseuses set up for 5-minute massages to warm up the golfers prior to play. Afterwards, golfers will enjoy an 18-Hole Scramble Shotgun Start. This is when all of the members on a team tee off at each hole and then decide which tee

shot they like the best. If you have never golfed in a scramble, it’s a blast. There will also be putting contests, closest to the pin contests, chipping contests, and a hole in one car contest during the day. Dixon Balls, an eco-friendly golf company, will be setting up on two of the holes on the course. They will be holding contests, giving away prizes, and engaging with our golfers. Sponsor, Rosa’s Garden Grill will be providing subs for a “sub stop” for golfers to refuel for the days upcoming festivities. So, what about this incredible organization that is The Boys and Girls Club?

Most have heard of it and know that it has something to do with helping kids, and sure if Denzel says its good then it must be good.

But what about results? Does the Boys and Girls Club actually deliver? The answer to that question is a resounding YES! 52% of 12th grade Club members express an interest in a STEM career, compared with 27% of 12th graders nationally.97% of Club teens expect to graduate from high school. 76% of low-income Club members ages 12 to 18 who attend the Club regularly reported receiving mostly As and Bs, compared to 67% of their peers nationally, and the list of stats goes on. As a matter of fact, if it wasn’t for The Boys and Girls Club, we may have never had the opportunity to experience the mind-blowing talents of Jennifer Lopez. Lopez joined the Kips Bay, South

Bronx Boys and Girls Club when she was 14 and they had just expanded their reach to include girls. Making a College Degree Affordable and Achievable

en Franklin once said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.â&#x20AC;? Studies confirm Mr. Franklinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s observation by showing individuals with a college degree generally will have higher lifetime earnings than those who do not, which is why thousands of Atlantic County parents recently sent their children off to our community colleges, colleges, and universities with a hug and a peck on the cheek in hopes of seeing a payoff where their children become more successful than themselves.

As parents helping three children pursue their degrees, my wife and I understand what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like to comb through a family budget to find savings so we can provide what's best for them. For too many families, the thought of going to college caused alarm and dread when it should have been greeted with enthusiasm and optimism.

Caroline Hardgrove and her family, for example, found themselves in that situation. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I come from a large family. Money for us, like many families, was always tight. When

it came time for me to think about college, I could hear the panic in my parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; voices.

I became panicked as well, and became discouraged,â&#x20AC;? explained Caroline. This is not the reaction families should have to the opportunity of a college education.

As a member of the Senate Higher Education Committee, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to keep a college degree affordable and achievable for all of our middle-class families, like the Hardgroves, by using different strategies.

This year, for example, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve passed new laws giving parents the tools to make the right financial decisions for college.

The first law requires colleges and universities to be more transparent with tuition and fees by providing each family with a financial aid â&#x20AC;&#x153;shopping sheet.â&#x20AC;? As part of the institutionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s financial aid offer to that student, it will include clear information on the costs, loan options, and estimated debt the student will incur in attending the institution, so families can easily evaluate and compare financial aid packages from different institutions.

The second law, based on my bi-partisan bill, creates an Office of Student Loan Ombudsman to help educate families about student loans and borrowing. The Ombudsman will also advocate on behalf of student loan borrowers in resolving disputes and protect borrowers from loan services producers who may be defrauding

or misleading borrowers. With the cost of college skyrocketing over the last decade, now more than ever eager students and their families need to be aware of the costs of paying for college so they are not blind-sided by their loan payments or taken advantage of by unscrupulous loan producers.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also passed two other laws to lower the cost of getting a degree. First, we created a â&#x20AC;&#x153;three plus one degreeâ&#x20AC;? program so students can receive a degree after spending three years at a county college and one year at a senior institution, which could save families tens of thousands of dollars. Second, we now require colleges and universities to develop plans to offer online materials to students in place of traditional textbooks. The average student spends $1,200 a year on textbooks, so in this age of technology, it makes sense to find savings by using digital textbooks that are publicly available online.

Recently, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve taken another step forward in our overall strategy to make college affordable. Under another bi-partisan bill I am sponsoring, which passed the Senate, college graduates who chose to teach STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in â&#x20AC;&#x153;low performing schoolsâ&#x20AC;? would be eligible for a loan redemption program. The US Department of Labor projects that STEM related jobs will grow by nearly ten percent over the next

decade with a median salary of $84,880, so this is a program that can provide a payoff for two generations of students. Graduates who teach in one of the 12 eligible schools in Atlantic County for four years would receive a break on their loans of up to $20,000, while elementary and high school students learn the skills necessary to thrive in our modern economy and hopefully be inspired to go onto college.

A college education should be an opportunity for motivated students with supportive parents to succeed with a rewarding profession and an appreciation for life-long learning. By reducing the costs of attending college and the burden of student loans, we can ensure familiesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; investment in knowledge is rewarding on all levels.

Practice Makes Perfect for Undefeated Mainland Girls Tennis

ith nine consecutive wins under their collective belt, one might suppose a day off was in order for the undefeated Mainland Girls Tennis team. However, as the cool September air blew across the Mainland courts this Thursday, the team was in full practice mode, committed to the goal of continuing their winning streak, and conquering the Cape-Atlantic League.

“We’re really proud of how hard the girls have been working and competing,” remarked Coach Kathy Yohe, as she volleyed balls to doubles pair Hannah Carson and Anna Geubtner.

There’s no clearer evidence of that effort than the Mustangs’ undefeated record, and their continued determination in both games and at practice.

Led by first singles sophomore and powerhouse Khushi Thakkar, the Mustangs began their season with wins over Vineland, Woodstown, and Bridgeton, before successfully taking on Ocean City, Atlantic City, EHT, Absegami, and Millville. Tuesday’s win over Vineland for the second time brings their record to 9-0. Senior Madi Hafetz has proven strong and steadfast in the second singles spot, followed by sophomore and third singles player, Charlotte Walcoff.

The Mainland varsity doubles pairs have also proven essential in the team’s enduring success, with the first doubles duo of Hannah Carson and Anna Geubtner coordinating points, and the rotating second doubles group of Ella Post, Lexi Jacob,

If those lyrics take you on a joy ride down memory lane, you may have been singing your heart out with the rest of the sold out crowd this past Saturday night. REO Speedwagon rocked the house at Tropicana like it was 1979.

The group's popular presence on radio in the late 1970s and 1980s was a defining feature of the era. The group sold 30 million albums and had a dozen Top 20 hits.

The band consists of front man, vocalist-guitarist, Kevin Cronin, keyboardist Neal Doughty, bassist Bruce Hall, lead guitarist Dave Amato and drummer Bryan Hitt.

REO Speedwagon, although many decades past its commercial prime, remains a beloved band with hits that span generations of music lovers.

Unlike many popular groups of that era, the band members today are the original band members of the late 70's.

They've stuck it out together through the decades and continue to bring crowds to life with live performances. The group has so many sensational songs that have stood the test of time.

REO Speedwagon took the stage and opened their set with “Don’t Let Him Go."

The hits just kept coming after that. The #1 hit from 1985, “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” and a top 10 hit from 1981, “Take It on the Run" followed. Hit song after hit song, and the crowd loved it! This is what they paid to hear, and REO was giving them what they wanted!

With numerous top 40 hits and several #1’s sprinkled in there, it’s not hard to fill a set list with songs that will keep the crowd singing every word. REO played a stacked set with “Time for Me to Fly,” “Back on the Road Again,” and my favorite, “Ridin’ the Storm Out” to close out the night.

A fantastic, two-song encore was in store with two of their most wellknown songs, “Keep on Loving You” and “Roll With the Changes.”

Cheekin’ The Blues Tales from The Pines

T

here are as many time honored traditions in the Pine Barrens, passed down from one generation to the next, as there are legends about the peoples, places, and creatures that live, lurk, and thrive there. Such was the case a while back this summer, when an old Piney friend of mine named “Dewey” called, and invited me to a traditional Piney home-cooked seafood dinner he was fixing.

“That sounds great, Dewey! Count me in!” I said in great anticipation.

Dewey knows the waterways, bays, and shore lines in and around the Pine Barrens as well as he knows the lines on both of his hands. And, he is an artist at preparing seafood dishes from these waters, and I’ve enjoyed some of his kitchen concoctions down through the years.

“Just bring your appetite, and hurry up about getting out here“, Dewey said.

Then, through a laugh, he finished, saying, “I want you to see how I cheek these blues”.

“Whoa!”, I said, thinking the connec-

tion had gone fuzzy or something, “You want me to see how you do what to the what?”, Dewey laughed. “Just get on out here, and don’t let no grass grow under your feet!”

About an hour later, I arrived at Dewey’s place, a large, two-story log cabin on five and a half acres of pristine Pinelands that is at the end of a long, sugar-sand road. I found Dewey in one of the out-buildings on the property (that has been in his family for almost four hundred years), cleaning a burlap bag full of bluefish and a couple beautiful weakfish, or “weakies” that he caught that morning.

“Ahhhh”, I sighed, “so this is supper, is it?”

“Yessir, it is, Paul. One of the family favorites we’ve been eating since I can remember. My grandmother got the recipe from her grandmother, and, well…you get the picture. It’s been around a long time.

We love it and I thought you might like to try it”, he said with his warm, trademark smile. “I really appreciate this, Dewey”, I said. “What, exactly, is it?”

“Cheeks and Weakie roe, sautéed in butter and scallions, over Spanish rice“, he said.

Dewey saw that I was speechless, and just stood there for several moments, watching my reaction, or lack thereof. I’d never heard of bluefish cheeks or weak-

fish roe, let alone tasted them. I had no idea what to expect, and I felt my appetite growing.

“Here. Look here”, he commanded.

“Watch and learn. These are the best parts of these fish. Absolute delicacies that not everybody knows about, and most people waste or use as crab bait.

The heck with the crabs, I say. Once you taste them, you’ll never throw ’em out again”.

With the care and skill of a fine surgeon, Dewey used his fillet knife to gently cut and remove the round piece of bluefish cheek from between the eye and jaw hinge on the bluefish. It wasn’t long before he had a dozen of them set aside in ice and went about filleting the rest of the fish for the freezer and future dinners. When he came to the weakfish, he carefully sliced them down the middle, and removed the large sack of eggs, or roe, from each female, and set it aside with the cheeks.

We went in the cabin, and Dewey melted several tablespoons of butter in a large sauté pan. He added several cups of chopped scallions and stirred.

He drained the cheeks and roe sacks and patted them dry on a paper towel, then gently placed them in the pan. He cooked them for just a few minutes on each side, being very careful not to break open the

The roe was very tasty, mildly fishy, and quite rich. It had a texture not unlike scrapple. The cheeks were absolutely delicious, and nothing like the heavy, oily-tasting bluefish filets some folks don’t care for. The cheeks were light-tasting, solid, and steak-like in texture. Both went perfectly with the Spanish rice.

“I can’t thank you enough, Dewey”, I said after dinner as we sat on the porch.

“You know I’m going to have to write a song called “Cheekin’ The Blues”, right?”

Dewey smiled. “Go for it, Paulie. But you’re gonna have to cut me in on it!” We laughed and talked well into the night.

all is my favorite season! I love the way the temperature is crisp. There is gorgeous fall foliage on the trees. And of course, the fall decorating of the front porch. We are so lucky to experience all four seasons.

There is nothing that welcomes fall and autumn more than decorating your front porch. Not only does it welcome you when you enter your house, but also your neighbors and guests. I am always looking for DIYâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and clever ways to repurpose items I can use to decorate. Here are 7 great ways to to get your front porch ready for fall.

1. Wooden Milk Crate paired with Pumpkins A lot of what you see in the pictures below are items that you may have already in your house. A simple wooden milk crate can be stained and weatherproofed for outdoor conditions. The pumpkins are simple and the floral arrangements can be picked up at a thrift store. Perfect for a small front porch to invite the fall season.

2. Lanterns Filled with Pumpkins and Gourds or Flameless Candle So simple, yet so perfect for fall,

Millenial Homebuyers are Savvy and Know What They Want

t may be hard to believe, but not all of the 18- to-35-year-old generation is so weighed down with college debt that they’re living in their parents’ basements. Contrary to popular perception, the Millennials are driving home sales. In fact, the National Association of Realtors just recognized them as the largest segment of the homebuyer market at 35 percent — up from 32 percent in 2014 — in its most recent 2016 “Home Buyer and Seller Generational Trends Study.”

“The coming years of housing demand will be Millennial-driven and will support the single-family sector,” Dennis Lockhart, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, says. Given that new reality, here are four things experts say Millennials desire most in a house. Keep these in mind because you will most likely be selling to a younger buyer.

Readiness Checklist: 5 Steps to Prep for Buying a Home

or many Americans, making the jump to buying that first house is a significant achievement that allows them to put their mark on their own space, while creating room for family and pets.

But how do you know you’re ready?

Americans see homeownership as an investment in their future, yet they are concerned about the steps they need to take to put themselves into a position to buy, according to the “How Americans View Homeownership” survey conducted by The Harris Poll April 17–29, 2019, among 1,004 U.S. adults 21 and older on behalf of Wells Fargo. The study showed that 44 percent of non-homeowners identified saving for a down payment as a top barrier to buying, more so than any other obstacle.

“Homeownership is very much a part of the American Dream, yet too many first-time buyers don’t know where to start,” says Liz Bryant, Wells Fargo Home Lending’s national retail sales leader. “We find that a great way to get moving down the path to

homeownership is with a conversation. By reaching out to your mortgage lender, your banker or even a housing counselor, you can start putting together a plan that will help get you on your way.”

Here are some steps to consider: ●● Research lenders and loan options. Identify a lender who has a breadth of home loan options, including low down payment mortgages, and who is willing to provide you with personalized guidance. Then just start the conversation. ●● Know your goal. Your mortgage consultant can help, and so can a financial health banker or a housing counselor.

create a budget for your monthly spending, so you can identify areas where you can save. Set aside unexpected windfalls, such as tax refunds, to grow savings.

Keep an eye on overall debt. While there’s room for student loans and credit card debt, a good rule of thumb is to keep your overall debt level -- including your new mortgage -- at or below 36 percent of gross monthly income.

Think beyond the down payment.

Consider setting aside 1-2 percent of the purchase price of your home each year for maintenance projects. If that seems like too

much, start with less and work your way up.

Tips for Finding Pet-Friendly Carpeting

A

dding new carpet is an easy way to rejuvenate the look and feel of any room in your home. But when you own pets, finding a quality carpet that is easy to maintain can be a tiring task.

“If you’re a pet owner, it’s important to find carpeting that can withstand the toll pets can dish out on flooring,” says carpet expert David Duncan of Mohawk Flooring, a carpeting brand that has produced SmartStrand - a soil and stain-resistant carpeting that has successfully taken on zoo animals, messy kids and a cross-country tour of squirts and spills.

Here are some tips:

Function: What is the room used for? For high-traffic areas, such as a family room, den or hallway, consider carpeting with built-in triexta fibers -- exclusive to Mohawk Flooring -- that are stain- and soil-resistant. A dining room carpet should be stain-resistant and easy to clean as w ell. Carpets with chemically applied stain protection treatments can lose their stain and soil resistance over time. some carpets. Carpets with kinked, spring-shaped fibers are designed to resist matting, and bounce back when walked or sat on.

Style and Softness. Comfort is a key factor when choosing a carpet for your home, especially if you have children or pets that spend a lot of time sitting or lying on the floor. Carpets with built-in stain protection have been shown to retain their softness over time, in part because there are no added chemical stain-protection treatments that might leave a rough or sticky residue.

Maintenance. High-maintenance carpets should be avoided in areas where there are children or pets.

No one wants to spend a lot of time cleaning up the inevitable messes, and some high-maintenance carpet cleaning products can be hazardous to your home environment.

Choose a carpet made of triexta fibers, which are designed to be dirt-resistant and can be cleaned easily with water and a mild detergent. In addition, take advantage of warranties offered by some carpet manufacturers on stains caused by pets.

How to Keep an Uncluttered House with Kids

always find the transition from summer to fall to be a good time to re-organize my house.

The beach cooler bag gets put away and backpacks re-emerge.

Suddenly my house seems cluttered between fall sporting equipment and endless (and I mean endless) papers coming home from school. Here are some tips for de-cluttering your

house when you have kids.

If you have a garage or basement, be clear about what goes there and what can stay in the house. If my kids are participating in a sport and they need easy access to the equipment, it can stay in the entryway. If the equipment is for a sport they are not currently participating in like karate, it goes in the basement. If the gear is for anything related to outdoor activities like helmets or scooters, it must go in the garage.

Let’s discuss papers and artwork.

Parents, have you ever tried to throw away something your kid did at school and they found it in the trash? It has happened to all of us. My kids bring home a folder from school everyday filled with completed work and informational flyers. I put all schoolwork in a pile so that my husband can take

a look at it and then once a week or so, when they are not around (this is key) I toss it. I got rid of mom guilt about this long ago because we can’t honestly be expected to keep every single math

worksheet. If it’s a project or a test that they did particularly well on, I will keep it but for the most part I throw away all the papers weekly. Artwork is a different story as they sometimes feel more attached to it than schoolwork.

I’ve hard from friends who have used an app like Artkive to take pictures of artwork and make it into a book.

Toys need a designated space in the house. When my kids were babies, I used to straighten up toys every night before going to bed and my husband thought I was crazy. I needed to do this to feel like I was waking up to a clean slate. Fast forward to my kids almost being nine and their toys are very different. Once every six months I try to go through the toys with them and agree upon which ones can be donated. If they haven’t been played with in the last year, it’s safe to say they have to go.

Another important system to have in place is for laundry. I wish I had a magic answer for how to manage this. Make sure kids know where their laundry goes. If they are old enough, they can bring their laundry to the laundry room. I don’t know about your kids, but mine are not yet capable of folding their laundry so I will fold it, put it on their beds and they can put it away themselves. I have a friend who does laundry once a week. That’s not me. I probably do it everyday or every other day. This is definitely my least favorite house chore.

Some people don’t mind a cluttered house but I’m not one of them.

It’s not easy to take an extra moment to put something in it’s right place but if you don’t, the clutter will make you lose your mind. With the start of a new school year, take the time to enact some new systems and make sure everyone knows about them. It will make you feel better about your shared living space!

To help you negotiate the homebuying process like a pro, Freddie Mac is sharing definitions of 10 key acronyms you’ll encounter as you meet with lenders, make a down payment and pay back your loan.

1. APR (Annual Percentage Rate): The APR tells you the annual cost of borrowing money based on the loan amount, interest rate and certain others fees. Use it as the bottom-line number to shop and compare rates among lenders.

2. FRM (Fixed-Rate Mortgage): The most common type of mortgage, an FRM, has an interest rate that doesn’t change, giving you stability over the life of the loan.

3. ARM (Adjustable-Rate Mortgage): An ARM usually offers lower monthly payments at the outset, but after three, five or seven years, payments change with interest rates and reset periodically.

4. LTV (Loan-to-Value): The LTV ratio equals the amount of money borrowed divided by the home’s appraised value. It shows how much of your home you own versus how much you owe, and lenders use it to help evaluate the risk and terms of your loan.

5. DTI (Debt-to-Income): Calculated by lenders to assess your ability to manage monthly payments and repay debts, DTI is the percentage of your monthly income that

goes toward your monthly debt payments.

6. PMI (Private Mortgage Insurance): For homebuyers making down payments that are less than 20 percent of the home purchase price, PMI is a required insurance that protects lenders from losses if borrowers are unable to pay their mortgage. PMI is typically incorporated into monthly mortgage payments.

7. P&I (Principal and Interest): This is the portion of your monthly mortgage payment that goes toward paying off the money you borrowed to buy your home. For most homeowners, P&I make up the majority of your monthly mortgage payment — but not all of it.

8. PITI (Principal, Interest, Taxes and Insurance): Together, principal, interest, taxes and insurance make up your total monthly mortgage payment. Calculating your total monthly payment is essential for giving you a more accurate picture of the cost of homeownership than P&I alone.

It’s easy to feel adrift in a sea of unfamiliar technical acronyms. But, studying your vocabulary now can mean greater confidence when it’s time to make one of the most important purchases of your life.

S

chairer Brothers Saw Mill is one of the last few saw mills located in South Jersey.

It has been family-owned and operated since 1936.

Schairer’s specializes in Atlantic white cedar used for fencing, siding, shingles, decking and tongue and groove. They also sell white pine for mantles and oak for trailer decks.

Their best years were in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s, when the boat industry was thriving with everything from rum-runners to luxury yachts. Many big boat builders bought their wood

from Schairer Brothers, 254 S. Bremen Ave. in Egg Harbor City. That is, until fiberglass came along, and completely changed the industry. Also during that time, most homes had either cedar siding and cedar shingles. Then asbestos and vinyl came along, again eliminating the need for cedar. Sadly, the need for Atlantic white cedar use faded quickly.

Joe Wade, of Mays Landing, the oldest and one of just two employees, says “We now get our wood from Chatsworth. There is no local stuff left; but we do provide custom work, delivery, and advice. We’re not going green; we’ve always been green.”

As you enter Schairer Brothers on Bremen Avenue in Egg Harbor City, you will see an old deserted home, falling apart. Much of the siding has fallen off and windows are left broken. But in 1936, it was the pride of the family, with cedar shakes and cedar siding.

Wade is also proud that they used to have two very large saws: one is still in use, the other is in a museum at Batso Village.

He says that Schairer Brothers, “Is the only family saw mill still operating that specializes in Atlantic white cedar in all of New Jersey.”

The business and saw mill seem closed as one drives by on Bremen Ave. But the smell of cedar still envelopes the air on some mornings reminding us of days gone by.
