ummer just doesn't want to let go. We are coming off of a couple of very hot and humid days. Is it atypical? No. Temperatures in the 80's often linger into early October, but it is annoying. Now, I know there are a lot of you out there that are fans of Summer, and that's all well and good. Personally, my favorite seasons are Fall and Spring because it gets comfortable. It's not comfortable when dew points are still around 70. Yuck! Going forward into the weekend we level out. We're looking at clouds and sun mixing together, highs both days will be in the low to mid 80s, with a small chance of showers. It is by no means a washout, or
anything close to it, but do have an umbrella handy. The tropics are heating up again, but there is nothing immediately concerning to me right now. There is a wave that came off the west coast of Africa over the weekend that could track towards the Caribbean, but we are still about 5 days out from seeing any sort of substantial development from that system. Beware the hype! I saw several posts showing that wave turning into another Dorian hitting the Bahamas and Florida. The posters showed a single run of a flawed model over 10 days out. The chances of that verifying are lower than winning the lottery. Realistically, we can only get an accurate feel for a forecast within the 5 day range. Stay well and have a great week! ike all Americans on that fateful day, my morning began like any other week day. I dropped my twin girls off at Kindergarten and completed my walk around the neighborhood. We didn’t have cell phones yet so I was oblivious as history was unfolding. "Something terrible happened... turn on television," my husband spoke in a somber tone, as I walked in the door. I had never heard him speak in that tone before. I froze as I watched the first tower fall. The reporter, along with thousands of Americans ran and cowered from the debris. I couldn’t believe this was happening on live television. We watched as first responders risked their lives and climbed stairwells to save thousands of lives at the mercy of the falling tower. Then the unthinkable happened. The second tower collapsed. Ameri-

As we began to hear from Pennsylvania and the Pentagon, I began to worry for everything I had taken for granted. A half day of kindergarten never seemed so long as I waited for my girls to come home and hug me. The hours that followed seemed surreal. Although all flights were suspended, I will never forget the sound of the military planes roaring over-

head as I lay in bed awake that night. The weeks that followed began to feel unbearable as we heard the stories of the lives lost on September 11th, 2001. While tragic stories filled our news channels, we also heard stories of heroism and patriotism. We heard stories of courage and faith. More people signed up for active military service than any other time in history. Even today, eighteen years later, as we continue to face this War on Terror, brave men and women will-
ingly defend our freedom and security every day. There was even a rare political bipartisanship, as Congress passed a $40 billion anti-terrorism and victim aid measure, three days after the attack. The world has changed so much in the eighteen years since. Few will ever forget where they were at that moment in time or in the days and months that followed. The kids grew up, the internet changed everything and social media reconnected us, at least virtually. Many things became antiquated with rapid advances in technology. With so many new gadgets and conveniences though, air travel remained the same if not worse. With this new threat, airline security became a top priority, trumping ease and convenience. We will never forget 9-11. We will continue to honor the civilians that lost their lives that day, the first responders that put themselves on the line for others and the soldiers that were deployed, sacrificing it all, for our freedom. Never forget and God Bless America.

Back to School Menu Planning

I
f you are like me, your kitchen did not get much use over the summer. Late beach evenings and impromptu day trips left me with little time to whip up healthy meals. When the kids head back to school, it is always a time to reset and I welcome the opportunity to get back on track. Over the weekend I make my dinner menu for the week and then grocery shop. While this takes a bit of time, it’s worth it in the long run as we eat healthier by avoiding takeout and stick to a budget. I hear from people all the time who say they wish they were better at meal planning. If this is how you feel, here are some tips to making a weekly menu and sticking to it. Be consistent. Carve out a time of the week for meal planning. For me, this works best on Sunday mornings. I like to food shop for the week right after creating my weekly menu. The recipes are fresh in my mind and if I get both of them done early on a Sunday morning, it’s out of the way so I can enjoy the rest of the day with my family. Have a spot where you write the menu for everyone to see. In our old house we had a big chalkboard in our kitchen where I wrote the weekly menu. In our current house, I have less kitchen space so I bought a dry erase whiteboard that I display on the kitchen counter for everyone to see. No more asking, what’s for dinner? If you want to know, look at the board! Now comes the part which some people find tricky, creating the menu. I typically plan meals for 5 nights a week leaving Friday and Saturday open for eating out or takeout. I start by writing the days of the week. Next, I write any activities on those specific nights so I know if we will be limited on time. For example, this week on Tuesday my daughter has theater class from 6-7pm and on Wednesday my son has baseball practice from 6-7:30pm. Scheduling information is helpful for planning meals. When I plan recipes, I start by asking my family if they have any requests for the menu. Sometimes they remind me of a dish I haven’t made in awhile and sometimes they

request something they want to try. Next, I look in my refrigerator and
pantry to see what I have from my weekly farm share or Misfits Market that I want to use up. I received a bunch of sweet potatoes last week so that was incorporated into my recipe for sweet potato gnocchi this week. There are some nights when I am really short on time and I will put my Instant Pot to work or pull something out of the freezer. I also like themes for certain nights like Taco Tuesday or Meatless Monday. This is fun and creates some consistency. If planning a whole week’s worth of meals seems daunting, start by planning for a few nights and see how it goes. It makes me feel organized to know what my week ahead holds in store at dinnertime. Hometown Heroes: Our Teachers The Story of Tracy Meister & Samantha Coyle

ow that the school bell regularly rings, it’s time to admit that summer is really over. We’ve sent our kiddos off for new adventures and experiences, perhaps for the very first time. Some moms breathe a sigh of relief, while for others, it’s an apprehensive time to imagine your child away from your care and watchful eye for over six hours each day. Fortunately, wonderful teachers are eagerly waiting for their students and are excited about a new year of learning. We salute all teachers that are educating and inspiring our future leaders. But some teachers go above and beyond the call of duty. Hometown Heroes Tracey Meister and Samantha Coyle, teachers at
&
Seaview Avenue School in Linwood, are those types of teachers. You can feel the love being poured into their students as they energetically greet and hug children in the hallways and classrooms. This dynamic duo of teaching seems inseparable though they are both individually talented and impacting students in life-changing ways. Their teaching paths began together; both Mrs. Meister and Mrs. Coyle started their teaching careers 26 years ago at the former Poplar Avenue School in Linwood, and have worked in the Linwood School District ever since. Both teachers are just as excited now as when they first started and feel blessed that they get to go to work doing something they love. The two have often collaborated over the years. Mrs. Coyle has spent the better part of her career as a third-grade teacher, but currently feels blessed to be involved in basic skills instruction. Mrs. Meister, who has also taught basic skills, has been a third-grade and fourth-grade teacher and is currently a fourth-grade teacher. Last year, they both focused on basic skills, which provides

Leave nothing but footprints at the beach

ummertime brings hundreds of thousands to our beautiful beaches. Two beach cleanups aim to ensure our beaches are left pristine and free of litter. Ocean City High School senior, Keely Demarco, organized a beach cleanup with the support of Kristina and Marshall Young, owners of the Peace of Wood Peace Compound on 12th and Asbury Avenue in Ocean City. “In the near future I hope to see people’s eyes open, as if they have an 'aha' moment. Our planet’s health is declining and it needs our help. I truly believe we can work together to make our home better for future generations by creating less waste, reducing our carbon footprint, and no longer using animal products. In the future I hope to have a career

that helps the e nv i ro n m e n t ,” says Keely. “During the most re ce n t cleanup, we found so many straws. Straws have been a popular topic recently with many restaurants switching to paper or reusable straws rather than using plastic. I love seeing companies make changes for the better, even if they’re small changes. When we all come together, doing good isn’t that hard; it’s actually fun. The little things do matter," emphasizes Keely.
Another beach cleanup was hosted by the South Jersey Boardriders Ocean CIty division on Tuesday, September 3rd. Sponsored by 7th Street Surf shop, many local surfers and their families assembled on 7th Street beach in front of the surf shop to gather trash left on the beach after Labor Day weekend. Most of the trash that was picked up was found between the boardwalk and the dunes, a location rarely cleaned on a regular basis. Much of the 7th Street Surf
Shop family was there, including Matt Keenan, Rob Kelly, members of the 7th Street Grom Squad, and Ocean City Boardriders Chapter president Kevin Morris. “The purposes of the Boardriders association is to support local grassroots organizations, hold board drives and to raise ocean protection awareness in local schools,” said Morriss. "The main thing to take away from these cleanups is to keep our beaches clean. After surfing, grab trash from the sand and leave it better than you found it,” added Matt Keenan. "Just doing that little bit will go a long way in keeping the beaches and ocean unpolluted and healthy for future generations to enjoy. After your day at the beach, please, leave nothing but footprints." Karen DeWalt has a Bachelor of Arts in English and Literature. Additionaly she is passionate about photography and music.

Extra Points with Pete for the week that was: The Eagles fell behind 17-0 and then 20-7 to the lightly regarded Redskins before turning on the offense in the second half and winning 32-27. This felt like déjà vu to me as in 2018, the Eagles were the NFL’s lowest scoring team in the 1st quarter. Thankfully, the Birds now have #10 back. DeSean Jackson was on the receiving end of a 51-yard touchdown pass from Carson Wentz and then a 53-yard touchdown pass as well. Jackson “lit up” the Linc and certainly helped turn the game around, welcome back #10…!!! ●● After not playing the entire preseason, Carson Wentz looked a little “checkdown happy” to start the game, but he finished with respectable numbers. 28-for-39, for 319 yards and three touchdowns isn’t awful. A 121 passing rating is pretty good too. Let’s hope this is the start of good things for Wentz. ●● As good as the passing game was to see, it was the running attack that won the Eagles the football game. 36-year-old Darren Sproles got the most work as he finished with nine carries for 47 yards and caught three passes for 16 more. ●●

t’s hard to believe that Fall doesn’t officially begin until September 23rd. After all, high school football is back, college football is back, the NFL has returned, it sure feels like Fall, doesn’t it? Since I last wrote, the Eagles start slow, but finish strong in their season opener against the Redskins, The Phillies (somehow) keep their playoff hopes alive. The Sixers only news came from an Eagles tailgate ironically. The Flyers host rookie camp and training camp is right around the corner. Local college football continues, and high school football is well underway. From the entertainment world, l can’t wait to see a new Brad Pitt movie that’s based in space. Plus, have you heard about the “Friends” pop-up in New York? As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts

Starter Jordan Howard had six carries for 44 yards, two catches for 11 yards, while rookie Miles Sanders finished with 11 carries for 25 yards and one catch for two. That three-pronged attack helped the Eagles win the time of possession battle and ultimately the ballgame. On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles secondary looked a little lost early as they gave up touchdowns to Vernon Davis and Terry McLaurin. I’m not sure Ronald Darby is back at 100%. Avante Maddox left for a bit with cramps. Sidney Jones seemed a step slow, but perhaps you can chalk it up to Week One jitters. The problem there is the Falcons lost and got embarrassed by the Vikings, so don’t expect Julio Jones to be an easy assignment for the Birds defense in Week Two. One last item from the other side of the matchup as Washington coach Jay Gruden chose to make running back Adrian Peterson a healthy scratch for the game. The Redskins are going to go with Derrius Guice moving forward, and former Eagle Wendell Smallwood’s ability to play on special teams apparently won him a spot on the active 47 instead of A.P. Pretty amazing to think about a guy that was Washington’s offensive MVP last season, out as a healthy scratch in game one of the 2019 season…! Time for some Phillies discussion now as they SOMEHOW have kept their playoff hopes alive. As I write this column, they’re coming off winning two out of three against the Mets in New York, including a marathon game to close things out. They are two games out of a playoff spot with 20 games left to play. It will be interesting to see what I write in my NEXT column two weeks from now about this team, but either way, you have to tip your cap to the fact that they haven’t packed it up and quit. Gabe Kapler said they were going to “scratch and claw” in every game and they have. I still get frustrated by them, but I have to admit they haven’t given up. In my mind, the Phillies MVP this season has been catcher JT Real-

muto. Catchers don’t generally get votes for the league MVP award, but I hope Realmuto gets a least a couple. He’s had career highs in doubles, home runs, RBI and slugging percentage with his bat. He’s thrown out nearly half the runners who have tried to steal against him. To me, losing Jorge Alfaro & top prospect Sixto Sanchez for an established guy like Realmuto has been totally worth it. Not much from the Sixers, but there was some off the court news on the Sunday of the Eagles home opener. Apparently Mike Scott is a Washington Redskins fan, and some Eagles fan decided to give him some grief in Lot-F of the Wells Fargo Center prior to kickoff. Video obtained by “Barstool Sports” shows Scott didn’t take to kindly to getting picked on. The Sixers say they are aware of the incident and are investigating. I think Mike Scott was probably treated unfairly. I also think he shouldn’t “fan the flames” and wear the opposing team’s jersey to an Eagles tailgate…!!! The surface has been painted for hockey at the Wells Fargo Center and in a change, the Flyers have gone with ONE single Flyers logo in the center, rather than a pair of logos. I like this change and hope it signifies big things for the season. The rookies had training camp last week in Voorhees. Actual training camp is right around the corner for the veterans.

In college football, Rutgers had a tough day and lost at ranked Iowa. Penn State beat up on Buffalo. But the story of the weekend was how Michigan paid Army $1.5 million to come to play in Ann Arbor and the Golden Knights almost pulled off the upset of the ages…! I have to admit I was rooting for Army to win that one. I like upsets as much as anyone and that would’ve qualified as a real doozy…! Finally, in high school football, Ocean City, Mainland, Pleasantville and Hammonton were all winners. Cedar Creek won on Saturday too, so Week Zero is now in the books and things can move on to Week One next. A “shout-out” to Bill Walsh, the former Holy Spirit coach who is battling A.L.S. I’ve been told he is struggling, but I sent him a text the other day to let him know we are ALL thinking of him. Keep fighting Walshy…!!! From the entertainment world, “Ad Astra” looks good with Brad Pitt. It was supposed to be a summer movie, but with Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones & Donald Sutherland in the cast, I’m okay that it’s coming out in late September. Gives me something to go watch for “date night” with my girl. Lastly, have you seen or heard about the “Friends” pop-up in New
York City…? It’s there through October 6th and even though tickets are already sold out, you can still visit the museum’s gift shop & get yourself some “Friends” merchandise. The comedy premiered on NBC on September 22nd, 1994, so it’s the 25th anniversary of the debut of an iconic NBC show. Only a short drive for most of our readers, this 15-acre privately owned farm in Mays Landing has rescued and cared for unwanted, abused, neglected, injured, and elderly animals since 2000. Domestic, farm, and exotic animals are given the opportunity to live out their natural lives in a happy, safe, and protected home. Animals that were once without hope are now living their very best lives.

these animals (currently the farm has over 600) has a story, and for most of them, the sanctuary was their last hope of being rescued. Filled with animals such as peacocks, cows, alpacas, rabbits, horses, goats, geese, donkeys, dogs, cats, chickens, skunks, a cockatiel, an emu, and a baby turkey, most of the animals roam free and get along well with each other. Zaleski, who also works full-time at
the FAA Tech Center and is a graphic designer/photographer, lives on the farm and plays mom to her menagerie of over 600 animals. Though sometimes she must separate her “children”, they mostly live together in harmony like one big (crazy) happy family. Zaleski uses the animals as an example to children of how to get along with others despite their backgrounds and differences. She visits local schools for free to present

Balancing "Me Time" with "Mom Time"

oms deserve time for themselves. There, I said it. This was a long summer. Even though my kids were in camp for several weeks out of the summer, we spent a lot of time together. There were days when I just needed a little bit of time for myself, but it just wasn’t happening. My twins started school last week and just like every year on the first day, I cried. I cried because I’m sending them off to spend their days in the care of someone else and because I’m going to miss them. However, as much as I will miss them, I need some time for myself and here is how I find that necessary time. Exercise makes me a better mom. It makes me feel better about myself and gives my mind clarity. I sneak it
in whenever I can. Sometimes that means after the kids go to sleep or after I drop them at school when I squeeze in a quick bike ride or run. It’s not easy to find the energy to do it consistently, but it always makes me feel better. Find a yoga class or activity that you enjoy and do it! Getting together with friends is so important. I prefer quality over quantity when it comes to girlfriends and I value and nurture my friendships. Being in the company of other women who will lend an ear or can relate to my current stage in life is so cathartic. I may not see some friends frequently, but sometimes it’s nice to just send a text to check in and let someone know you are thinking about them. Pampering is always good for the soul. I am not really a girly girl in that I rarely wear makeup and don’t own one pair of high heels. However, I love a good pedicure or day at the spa! You don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy some

pampering time. Finding time for a pedicure or massage once in a while will do wonders for the soul. There is no rule that says just because summer is over you can’t go to the beach and read alone. Even if it’s just for a half hour, it will do wonders for relaxing you and providing you
with a brief escape. I’m a reader and always have a book tucked away in my bag or earphones in so I can listen to a book or podcast. Plan a night or weekend away. Okay this isn’t always so easy for me based on our busy schedules but now that my kids are 8 years old, it’s time to start doing this even if it’s once a year. Next week I’m going away with some girlfriends for a few days to celebrate our “big” birthdays. It will be my first time flying alone since my kids were born and I’m so excited, mostly just for the quiet plane ride when no one is asking me for snacks! I’ll enjoy several days of leisurely morning coffee, hiking, eating good meals and laughing. What better way to nurture the soul! As the school year gets going and your kids get into a routine, be sure to make some time for yourself at least once a month. It will make you a better mom and remind you of who you were before having kids. You work hard and deserve it!

You Need Essential Nutrients

ll of a sudden it’s all the rage . Everyone is counting macronutrients . However what exactly are they looking for? How much is too much and what exactly does your body need? While there are many essential nutrients, they can be broken into two categories: macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are eaten in large amounts and include the primary building blocks of your diet — protein, carbohydrates, and fat — which provide your body with energy. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients, and small doses go a long way. There are six main groups of essential micronutrients and macronutrients. Essential nutrients are compounds that the body can’t make or can’t make in sufficient quantity. Nutrients come from food, and they’re vital for disease prevention, growth, and good health. Protein is having its moment, and not just in the workout community. But all of the hype is for a good reason. Protein is essential for good
health. Protein provides the building blocks of the body, and not just for muscle. Every cell, from bone to skin to hair, contains protein. A startling 16 percent of the average person’s body weight is from protein. Protein is used primarily for growth, health, and body maintenance. All of your hormones, antibodies, and other important substances are composed of protein. Protein is not used to fuel the body unless necessary. Proteins are made of up different amino acids. While the body can create some amino acids on its own, there are many essential amino acids that can only come from food. You need a variety of amino acids for your body to function properly. I will tell you that the good news is you don’t need to eat all of the amino acids at once. Your body can create complete proteins from the foods you eat throughout the day. While meat, fish, and eggs are good sources of essential amino acids, you can also get protein from plant sources like beans, soy, nuts, and some grains. Exactly how much protein you need daily depends on a variety of factors including how active you are, and your age.
A great balanced nutritional program will always include starches, carbs .Don’t let the low-carb craze fool you. Carbohydrates are necessary for a healthy body. Carbs fuel your body, especially your central nervous system and brain, and protect against disease. Any diet that tells you not to include carbs , is just that , a diet! A repeat performance of the ever failing diets in vogue when the last fad diet gets boring. Carbohydrates should make up 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calories. Now... Before you reach for the white bread or pasta, keep in mind that the type of carb you eat matters. Some carbs are healthier than others. Opt for whole grain breads , whole wheat pastas , beans, and fiber-rich vegetables and fruits instead of refined grains and products with added sugar. Oh, My Mama …

W
hen I opened Mama Mia’s restaurant in Seaville, New Jersey, in 1988, Penne alla Vodka was all the rage. Every restaurant in the United States, and in fact the world, seemed to offer its version of this iconic Italian-American dish made with a Rosa Vodka Sauce. Note I said this is an Italian-American sauce, not pure Italian. Both America and Italy claim to have invented Vodka Sauce, but there is no clear-cut winner. According to many sources, Penne alla Vodka was invented in the mid-1970s at the Dante restaurant in the city of Bologna when vodka distillers were asking restauranteurs to promote their
vodka not only as liquid refreshment in their bars, but also in recipes. In support of the vodka distillers’ claim, the Williams Sonoma Essentials of Italian cookbook states that it was invented in the 1980s by a Roman chef for a vodka company that wanted to popularize its product in Italy. In the United States, there are two stories. The first credits the creation to Luigi Franzese, the Italian-American chef of Orsini Restaurant in New York City. Another version gives the credit to a graduate of Columbia University named James Doty. A basic Vodka Sauce is made with canned plum tomatoes, garlic, red pepper flakes, vodka, cream, Parmesan cheese and herbs, usually basil. However, it seemed to me that every version of vodka sauce I tasted (and believe me I tasted many, many versions) was bland. I always was left wanting more flavor, more depth, more … something. There was not one version I would have been proud to serve in my restaurant. So when I was preparing to open Mama Mia’s Restaurante I knew I had to include a Penne alla Vodka dish, but one I liked. I began experimenting with recipes long before opening the doors of Mama Mia’s. I can’t recall how many times I tested the recipe until I came up with the one I loved and still use today. I’ll bet I tested 20 to 30 versions over several months – or more! My wife, Christine, and my friends got so tired of tasting my versions of Vodka Sauce! Because I wanted to set my Vodka Sauce apart from all the rest, I decided to name it Mama’s Sauce, both after my

*1 medium onion, chopped and caramelized in advance of making the recipe 3 tablespoons (3 ounces) butter 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon dried sage 1/4 cup chopped scallions, white parts only 2 to 3 garlic cloves, chopped Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon salt 2 to 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil 2 tablespoons chopped parsley 6 ounces sweet Masala wine One 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup (about 5 ounces) frozen peas, thawed 4 to 6 ounces grated Parmesan cheese, plus extra for garnish Cooked penne pasta, drained, reserving 1 to 2 cups of pasta water Additional basil, parsley and Parmesan cheese for garnish *Before starting to make Mama Sauce, caramelize the chopped onion by melting 2 tablespoons butter in a small saucepan over medium heat until sizzling. Add chopped onions and a pinch of salt and cook, stirring constantly, until onions become translucent. Reduce heat to medium low, stirring occasionally, until onions become softer and medium brown. This may take up to 20 minutes to restaurant but also after my Mama, Bertina, from whom I got my love of food and hospitality growing up, literally, in the kitchen of her tavern in Italy. Here is my recipe written in quantities you can make at home. I hope you enjoy it. Buon Appetito.
complete. Meanwhile, melt 3 ounces of butter and extra-virgin olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sage, scallions, garlic, red pepper flakes and salt; cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened. Add the caramelized onions, basil and parsley and bring to a sizzle over medium heat. Remove from heat and add Marsala wine. Return to heat and reduce the mixture by one-third, stirring occasionally. Add the heavy cream and reduce the mixture by one-half, stirring occasionally. Add crushed tomatoes and peas and bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Cook about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, to develop flavor. Reduce heat to low and stir in Parmesan cheese until melted. Add the drained penne to the pan and toss until the pasta has absorbed some of the sauce, about 3 to 5 minutes. (If it’s a bit thick add saved pasta water, a little at a time, until you reach your desired consistency.) Serve sprinkled with additional basil, parsley and grated cheese. hat’s old is new again at Ocean City’s iconic hotel resort. The Flanders Hotel unveiled its new and exclusive private supper club last Friday September 6th. Named Club 1923 for the year the “Jewel of the Southern Jersey Shore” first opened for business. It is created in the spirit of the Flanders’ elegance of a bygone era, combined with modern conveniences of a full-service hotel resort of today. The main attraction of the new supper club will be the overall dining experience, unique to Ocean City. “We want to make this club a place where members will enjoy socializing with friends and family,” said Flanders Director of Hotel and Banquet Operations, Peter Voudouris. “It is a place they can call their own.” Voudouris said it will deliver an upscale dining experience, one that is intimate and relaxing. Ocean City Air Shows Fly Over Town This Weekend

ll eyes will turn to the sky for Ocean City’s Air Show Weekend on Sept. 14 and 15. All events are free to
attend. The celebration starts with the Ocean City Airport Festival on Saturday (Sept. 14) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festival features a ground display of unusual airplanes ranging from World War II to the present. The event will feature a parachute jump from Team Fastrax, “America’s Skydiving Team.” It also will include food, music, classic cars and kids’ activities, including the Ocean City Board of Realtors’ popular Bubble Mania. The skydiving team will perform at the Airport Festival at some time after 12 p.m., depending on wind and weather conditions. The half-mile “Runway Run” will return and is open to all ages. It offers a chance for anybody to cover ground normally traversed only by planes. The run will go off at some time between noon and 2 p.m. The festival takes place at the Municipal Airport at 26th Street and Bay Avenue. Additional parking for the festival will be available at Shelter
Road (off Tennessee Avenue) with free shuttle service provided. The Parachute Pyrotechnic Show will return for its third year at 8 p.m. Saturday (Sept. 14). The show consists of several highly trained and specially licensed Team Fas-

The jump will end with a landing on the Seventh Street Beach and will be viewable along the entire Boardwalk. The Boardwalk Aerobatic Air Show will bring some of the best stunt pilots and aerobatic champions in the world to put on a show over the beach and boardwalk starting at 1 p.m. Sunday (Sept. 15). Mark Meredith performs award-winning spins and aerobatics. ●● Ace Maker 33: Gregory “Wired” Colyer shows off the capabilities of the T-33, the U.S. Air Force’s first operational jet and a piece of U.S. aviation history. ●● Tucano Air Shows: The MK1 Tucano and its 1,100-horsepower turboprop “not only roars, it whines,” according to its pilot. The Tucano will execute loops and other maneuvers at all speeds. ●● Kevin Russo Air Shows: Kevin is in his 22nd year flying air shows with his restored SNJ-6, which was built in 1944 and delivered to the Navy during World War II.

Thousands typically soak up some of the final days of the calendar summer as they watch the spectacle from the beach and boardwalk. Local Golf Tournament Makes Dream Come True

olunteers from the All-Volunteer Cape Atlantic Chapter of the Sunshine Foundation held their 24th Annual Sunshine Golf Classic
on Monday, September 9th at the Linwood Country Club. Money raised helped answer the dream of Janessa, a 16 years old, from Pleasantville, diagnosed with Down syndrome. Janessa’s dream is to meet the princesses at Walt Disney World while staying at the Sunshine Foundation Dream Village near Disney with her family. Janessa was surprised with her Dream Come True reveal near the end of the tournament. She said “I don’t want people to
see me different or feel sorry for me because I’m a little different…I want to dream big and want to feel like I can conquer the world, just with a little help.”
The tournament was founded in 1995 by volunteers from the All-Volunteer Cape Atlantic Chapter of the Sunshine Foundation. In its 24-year existence, the tournament alone has

Identifying Mystery Plants in Your Garden

ne of the most frequent questions I hear from both novice and experienced gardeners is, “What is it?” Often new homeowners purchase properties with existing landscaping or gardens. If it’s the off season for those plants to bloom, they may be difficult to identify. My friend Esther and I cringe when we see new homeowners rip out beautiful plants that they mistook for weeds. Of course, the joy of homeownership and gardening is making it your own, mistakes and all. But it’s sad to see plants such as clematises or foxgloves get discarded due to lack of knowledge. Fortunately, the internet has many resources for identifying whether a plant is a keeper or an invasive nuisance. One of my favorite groups on Facebook is “New

ard Rock Atlantic City held its "Celebrate America Parade, Saturday evening, September 7, 2019 on the Atlantic City board-
walk. Thousands of spectators lined the boardwalk to view the one hour and thirty minute parade and judging by the interactions with parade participants, a great time was had by all. The parade featured patriotic cold air parade balloons, never before seen on the Atlantic City Boardwalk. There was also be a moment of silence and remembrance for those impacted during 9/11. Philadelphia sports legends Larry Bowa, Bill Bergey and Dave Shultz
were highlighted in the parade. The Grand Marshal for the parade was Miss America 1984 Suzette Charles of Mays Landing. Atlantic City's very own heroes and first responders participated in the parade also, along with numerous marching and string bands and more. Donald B. Having a Plan in Place, Just in Case By Eric Scheffler Atlantic County Sheriff
T
here is an old adage that goes something like this; Be courteous to everyone you meet. However, have a plan for them all. All people. All situations. As I mentioned before, critical incidents are spontaneous and unpredictable once they have begun. A critical incident can be one of many different types of situations. It may be a medical emergency of your own or someone else’s, entrapment in a vehicle, a robbery, or spontaneous violence. The list is unfortunately endless. Having a plan will give you a resource to tap into once a critical incident begins. Let’s now focus on the development of our plan and the training it takes to pull off the plan successfully. First we must understand the threat, and then look at what skill sets we need to adapt to the ever-changing and dynamic situation called a critical incident. The three most important concepts that you need to use to develop your plan are the following: �� The mindset that you need to accomplish the task at hand �� A skillset, practical information and techniques, to complete the task �� The physical condition required to carry it out You first have to understand that the most powerful weapon that man has ever known is something that you take with you every day. That is the human mind. A strong mindset will include training and understanding in the following areas: �� Thinking through fight, flight, or freeze process �� Making decisions based on the information you know at the time �� Playing the “what if� game �� Making the decision that you may have to hurt someone to save your own life or the life of someone else �� Having the mental capacity to change your thinking to adapt and overcome the unpredictableness of the situation �� Understanding how to control your breathing under stress Developing a strong mindset will give you the ability to think through a critical incident. This is essential

for you to survive the situation. The second element of your plan is your skillset. Your skillset is made up of your training and education when it concerns critical incidents. Your skill set is made of the following: �� Correct response based on the information known at the time of the incident �� Maximizing your survival rate from moment to moment �� Posture disturbance techniques �� Understanding of evacuation techniques �� Fortification techniques and tactics �� Concealment vs cover �� Physical counter techniques �� Survival first aid (bleeding control) Each one of these skillsets will help you maximize your survival rate. Physical conditioning is the third element of your plan. Vince Lobardi once said that fatigue makes cowards out of us all. You need a physical conditioning base to continue to maximize your survival during critical incidents. You do not have to be a professional athlete or a cross fitter. Your age does not matter either. You just need to work on your conditioning and build a base. This base should include: �� Endurance training - walking, jogging, HITT training �� Strength training - calisthenics, weight training �� Flexibility - stretching, yoga �� Basic counter tactics techniques - jiu jitsu, close counter combat, karate Your physical conditioning can be trained and maintained in as little as 10 minutes a day. You do not need to devote your entire day to training. The United States military perform an exercise called the Daily Seven. Soldiers perform seven exercises in a circuit everyday in order to maintain and improve their physical conditioning. There is an old Chinese proverb that says; “I don’t fear the man who trains a thousand techniques daily. I fear the man who trains one technique a thousand times!� Your counter tactics techniques should be based on a very few moves! Once you build the proper mindset, skillset, and physical conditioning, you will be able to apply them to all critical incidents. You need to practice your plan and test it with other people to see how successful you will be in various situations. Continue to evaluate your plan and question your successes and failures. Are these successes or failures a result of your application of princi-
ples, or is it a failure of the concept or technique. Remember that you are playing for keeps. Your life, or the life of someone you love, will depend on your successful application of your plan. You are probably thinking right now “Is the Sheriff kidding me? This seems like way too much work to accomplish; build a plan, practice it, test it, and evaluate it. Just tell me the secret move or technique! In reality, there are no secret moves, just hard work and lots of repetitions that are performed consistently and correctly. Maintaining this level of preparedness through the development and training of your plan will create good survival habits. These survival habits save lives. You and your loved ones are worth it. ave you ever seen a piece of art, roughly the size of a quarter, nestled in its own tiny little frame, hidden in scenic areas along the South Jersey shore? Artist and surfer Julian Miller wants to show you places you perhaps did not know existed in your own backyard by hiding his artwork and giving clues on his Instagram page which has over 2400 followers. Giving hints such as, “use the background of the photo to find the location” and “It’s on a wooden surface, look low, you’ll be closer to the jetty than the bridge when found, it’s not in the background of the photo and you may have to walk on some rocks to find it.” When asked why he started hiding his artwork back in 2015, he replied, “I wanted to get people out of their houses, away from the TV and into nature, and to take people to scenic areas that they may have never known existed before. I also wanted to engage the community artistically with something totally different.” Although he calls Avalon home, his mini masterpieces can be found as far south as Cape May and as far north as Atlantic City. The journey
to creating these unique pieces are “uplifting and fun” for Julian. Word of mouth, reposting and tagging on social media helps him gain followers every week, with spikes in numbers occurring after every find. To maintain consistency, posts will appear on his Instagram feed, accompanied by a clue to its whereabouts. So how do you procure your own one of a kind Julian Miller miniartwork? First, you have to follow him on his Instagram page @miniartwork. Watch for him to post on Sunday or Monday. Wander outside your house or hotel room and explore our beautiful beaches, back bays, world famous attractions or somewhere new you never would have found without Julian’s guidance. Because of his busy schedule during the summer,
he stays local to Avalon and Stone Harbor, but once work slows down in the fall and winter, look for more hides up and down the coast as far north as Atlantic City and as far south as Cape May. Gary Hill, as well as several others, got together to rally the cause and raise funds under the guise of “Friends of St. Nicholas”. “It’s a pain staking journey that requires not only history lovers, but the community at large to work together to get the job done” says Peter Caporilli, who is another committee member and successful local entrepreneur. If you look at their website and read the comments on their informative Facebook page, it’s obvious there is so much love for the memories and the church. Claudia G. states “I was confirmed and married, in this Magnificent Holy Church, St. Nicholas of Tolentine, by Father McMinimum. This is a church that can never or should ever be replaced”. Lisa N. says “So many wonderful memories of receiving all my sacraments here. This church is a priceless piece of history and should remain standing as a reminder of what the Catholic faith was built on”. Christine H. also says, “Yes, it is a beautiful church. It compares to the beautiful examples we have seen in Cologne, Germany”. A little-known fact about St. Nicholas is that it has a connection with 9-11. The Looming Tower was a mini-series about events leading up to 9-11. One of the shows' central characters is FBI Counter Intelligence Assistant Director John O'Neill, played by Jeff Daniels. The show chronicles the events leading up to 9-11 and how
beyond. During a beautification campaign in 1977, the original, early twentieth century murals and artwork were painted over. In 2001, St. Nicholas of Tolentine was listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In only the second beautification renovation in the Church's history, capital funding is sought to restore the Church's interior to it's original glory. “We've lost too many of our beautiful and iconic Atlantic City landmarks, now it's time to take a stand.” says Dirk DaCosta, one of the committee members. The Friends of St. Nicholas look forward to meeting you in person, walking you through the interior and explaining the challenges that lay ahead. The 19th annual Surf For A Cause raised more than $20,000 Saturday, Sept. 7 at Decatur Avenue beach in Margate with funds still being counted. More than 75 people participated in the surfing contest and the Surf It Forward fundraising campaign with hundreds more attending throughout the day. “It’s incredible to see the support from the surfing community after 19 years,” said foundation president Mark Zappone of Linwood. “It was a great day on the beach and it was an honor to recognize past president and longtime board member Dan Cellucci for all his contributions to the DRCF over the years.” Eleven-year-old Brynn Gallagher was the star surfer of the day, taking home first prize in each and every women's division. The Hurley Line:
Kate Steinle Decision is an Outrage ... As a Liberal Court Once Again Sides with Illegals

O
ne final indignity for the Kate Steinle Family has arrived. An American federal court has once again ruled against them, in favor of an illegal alien, who shouldn't be here in the first place. To refresh your memory, Kate Steinle was senselessly shot and killed in a very proud Sanctuary City (San Francisco) on July 1, 2015. She was struck by a bullet while taking a walk with her father and a friend of the family on the San Francisco waterfront pier. Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate was here in America illegally and has been deported (back to Mexico) five times. Incredulously, Garcia-Zarate was pre-
viously acquitted (in 2017) of a long list of serious charges: ●● First-degree murder ●● Second-degree murder ●● Involuntary manslaughter Assault with a semi-automatic weapon He had been convicted of Possession of a firearm. However, the 1st District Court of Appeals in San Francisco has overturned the lone conviction. Their rationale is bizarre and deeply disturbing. This kook, leftist court has actually officially ruled that the lower court Judge failed to give the jury the opportunity to acquit Garcia-Zarate on the completely bogus theory that he had only possessed the weapon for only a moment. This rationale is completely irrelevant, because Garcia-Zarate admitted that he possessed the weapon. How can you hold a gun and not "possess" it? This is what these liberal politicians, who wear judicial robes have resorted to. Now, in Bizarro World, there is a time requirement in order to "possess" a weapon. "These questions go to the heart of a
momentary possession defense," Justice Sandra Marguiles wrote in the unanimous 3-0 decision. "The fact that the jury was not instructed whether there was a time requirement for possession suggests the jurors were wrestling with how long the defendant had the gun." This is absurd. Garcia-Zarate admitted he possessed the gun. Garcia-Zarate admitted to possessing the gun, saying that he didn't know that he picked it up and that it was wrapped in a tee shirt. Garcia-Zarate blames the gun for firing accidentally. A ballistics expert testified at the trial that the gun in question will not fire unless you pull the trigger. I don't believe Garcia-Zarate's bogus story one bit. However, let's just suspend belief for a moment and say his story is true. Wouldn't that make Garcia-Zarate guilty of at least involuntary manslaughter? The gun belonged to a federal Bureau of Land Management Ranger. It had been stolen from his parked car a week before Steinle was killed. Garcia-Zarate remains in jail. He still faces federal charges of gun possession
and for being here in America illegally. Garcia-Zarate's attorney, Tony Serra said, "That kind of error causes reversals all the time. Then the prosecution has the prerogative of going again," said Serra. "The state case is a heavier case because it's a homicide and a gun ... it's going to be a big potential decision on what they're going to do," said Serra. The San Francisco district attorney's office hasn't decided if they will appeal the 1st District Court decision. The even crazier 9th Circuit (Circus) Court of Appeals has previously ruled that Kate Steinle's parents cannot sue the self-proclaimed (San Francisco) "Sanctuary City" for wrongful death. Yes, this joke, circus court ruled that (despite the fact that it's federally illegal) a Sanctuary City has been granted protection from this court. The Steinle family lawsuit attempted to hold the Sanctuary policy and San Francisco County Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi were responsible for Steinle's death, because their policy allowed Garcia-Zarate to stay in America time-and-time, again. Can you even imagine what has gone

throw the minds of the Kate Steinle family over their years of agony? Kate died in her Father's arms saying, "help me Dad." Yet, every judicial decision to date has ended in the favor of the illegal immigrant, who should not be here in the first place. USCIS Acting Director Ken Cuccinelli said, "Kate Steinle was tragically killed because San Francisco proudly proclaims itself a sanctuary city. How many more innocents will die before sanctuary cities stop harboring violent criminals? This defies common sense, public safety and human decency." The Steinle death became a flash point for the issue of illegals being protected by liberal elected and appointed officials. President Donald Trump raised the issue often during the 2016 campaign. Please remember that we had a New Jersey Family killed by an illegal immigrant. It is disgusting that New Jersey is a "Sanctuary State." Governor Phil Murphy and his fellow Democrats are proud of this accomplishment. A Murphy state directive actually prohibits local, county and state law enforcement authorities from cooperating with Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE). Be honest. Could you have ever imagined that radical Democrats would work against its own citizens in this manner? In every normal era in American history, never before have government officials implemented such radical measures. Murphy and the Democrats are regularly striving to provide illegals with more and more rights. Many times, they grant illegals more rights than our own citizens. I don't believe that any American citizen could have received the preferential treatment that Garcia-Zarate has experienced in our judicial system. The time has come for the United States Department of Justice to bring criminal charges against all elected and appointed officials who have engaged in

the creation and implementation of Sanctuary States or Cities. Postcards from the Past
The Galleon was built in 1926 as a real estate office to attract buyers to the Neptune's Gardens development in Absecon. It was built as a replica of Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria. It was also known as the Ship house. The ship was originally built on wetlands and accessed by a wooden plank walkway at the Absecon Beach Camp. At that time, there was a seafood restaurant in the building and a miniature version of the Absecon lighthouse nearby. When the real estate market bottomed out, the building was moved three miles away. It was used as an Atlantic gas station and various shops, restaurants, and offices over the years. Towards the end, it housed a seldom-open antiques shop. In the late 1980s or early 1990s, the building was painted white with light blue trim. This was the last of three ship real estate offices built. One of these was for the Pirate Ship Realty Co. in Cliffwood Beach, NJ which was destroyed by fire in 1993. The ship in Absecon was demolished in 2009.

bsecon is a scenic historic city named for the Absegami tribe of Native Americans. Originally a town in 1872, Absecon incorporated in 1902 to a city. Safe Returns: How to Release a Fish
earning how to fish involves more than catching fish. At some point, all anglers will be faced with the need to return fish they are not allowed to keep to the water, due to size, season, creel limits, or local catchand-release fishing regulations. Mastering the task of fish release by following the steps in this section will give you confidence that you know how to release fish in a way to protect fish populations for future generations of anglers. You might be asking yourself, "What’s the best way to handle fish to ensure they survive release?" Whether or not they do largely depends on the angler. Learning how to release fish from a hook takes practice in general. Understanding how to handle fish and how to release fish in a conservation-friendly manner are the first few steps you
can take to help promote fishing conservation. ●● Use wet hands when handling a fish or a knotless rubberized landing nets (and rubberized - not cotton- gloves if you must wear gloves). This helps maintain the slime coat on the fish, which protects it from infection and aids in swimming. Anglers that know how to practice proper catch and release never use a towel of any kind when handling fish since a towel can remove this slime coat. ●● Hold the fish horizontally whenever possible since this is the way fish naturally swim through the water. Do not drop the fish onto hard surfaces! ●● Keep your fingers away from the gills and eyes of the fish. ●● If needed, use a release tool (dehookers, recompression tools) to minimize handling.

Try to release your fish gently head first into the water, which helps push water through the mouth and over the gills, and helps to resuscitate the fish. ow with over 3400 miles on our trip odometer, our next stop on our way west is Buffalo, Wyoming for no reason other than it is a good waypoint for our travels. We had no prior knowledge of the town and that was part of the allure, not knowing what lies ahead. We pulled into the Buffalo Inn where we reserved a room for two nights before a big push westward. It was an adequate motel with a nice king bed, great shower and as a surprise, a complimentary full breakfast. Compared to camping, it was luxurious. As we ventured towards town, on the way we came across a familiar theme that continued to repeat itself; liquor stores, gas stations and combination restaurants and casinos.

It seems that many little towns have a multitude of casinos that are in buildings some no larger than our WAWAs. The main street in Buffalo was only about a half a dozen blocks long but one could see that the area was clean and well maintained. There was a nice mix of western wear shops, galleries, an outdoor recreation store and of course, a couple coffee shops and a bakery to die for. We made a point of hitting that for some fresh baked cinnamon buns before we left town. The proprietor moved from Alabama a year ago to escape the crowds that came with hot humid summers. With little prompting, he shared more of about him and his family. It is interesting and fun to discover why people move to the West from their long established roots. Main street’s anchor property is the Occidental Hotel which began its humble beginning in 1897 by Charles Buell. A small group of miners stopped by Buell’s tent asking if he could feed them and put them up for a few nights which he did and he fed them well. Word got out and as a carpenter by trade, he built a small building to accom-

Fast forward and after many additions and renovations a walk into the Occidental Hotel today is like walking into a Western movie set and its bar is no exception although with a somewhat violent past. There is a record of numerous gunfights in the bar and renovations over the years and uncovered approximately 26 bullet holes in the wall. An evening in Buffalo would not be complete without a glass of whiskey at the bar where such notables as Teddy Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Buffalo Bill Cody, Calamity Jane and Ernest Hemingway sought to ease
their parched throats. My whiskey was placed on the bar and I sat back while a gravelly voiced old cowboy while he played his guitar and sang his country songs. His granddaughter accompanied him on the bass fiddle. In our travels over the years, my wife and I often talk about moving to one of the places that strike a special cord with us; a place where we could lead a calm, satisfying and simple life. Buffalo, Wyoming has just made the short list.
