'm sure many of you saw the Farmer's Almanac forecast for this upcoming Winter. I was flooded with inbox messages and emails the day after it came out because people are freaking out about the "polar coaster winter" coming our way. For the record, I have no clue what that means. Yet another invented term like bomb cyclone and polar vortex. All these scary terms used to get ratings and sell headlines. It's ridiculous. I often wonder what happened to "plain ole winter"? We live in a day and age where everything is hyped and sensationalized, I just don't understand it anymore. My opinion of the "forecast"? It's a bunch of malarkey. While the Farmer's Almanac is a fun read, there is no basis in actual scientific fact.

My opinion of general long range forecasting has really developed and transformed over the years. When I first got into the business a decade ago I would start looking at Winter in August. Not anymore. Too many battle wounds. The fact is like it or not, the climate IS changing. I don't subscribe to the idea that it's all man-made, I believe it's mostly natural and cyclical but regardless of what the cause is - it IS changing and forecasting is becoming harder by the year. We can pick up on overall trends a couple months out but to say with complete certainty that a season is going to feature "x, y and z" is absurd. There are many factors that go into long range forecasting, mainly the status of sea surface temperatures. We started Summer with an El Nino, we are transitioning into a La Nina pattern right now. Typically that means several cool blasts in the east with more clipper type systems for snowfall in the Mid-Atlantic and South Jersey. That's very general and very vague. Check back with me at the end of October and we can take a better stab at what may pan out.

An End or a Beginning? Letter from the editor

abor Day weekend comes with mixed feelings for me. Its’ summer's last kiss. In just a few days the school buses will be rolling, most vacationers will be gone and many of us will be settling into a whole new schedule. Nothing is more enjoyable in the summer than the Jersey Shore and everyone seems to know it! Hundreds of thousands of people will be coming to our shores this Labor Day weekend for one last hurrah. They’ll be seeking warm sea breezes, sand in their toes and the endless entertainment opportunities found up and down our shores. As we celebrate, let's remember to honor the workers that still must work regardless of the holiday: the first responders, law enforcement, those in the retail and restaurant industry and so many more. If you

are fortunate enough to enjoy a three-day reprieve from work, consider tipping a bit extra to those that are still out there serving up drinks and food. As the calendar turns to September, we need not fret. September is the Jersey Shore's best kept secret. The weather is gorgeous, the ocean warm and the parking is easy. Plus, there’s Football! I love living in a climate with changing seasons and Fall offers us so much to look forward to. From crisp air to harvest festivals, the fun doesn't stop. Our island and mainland towns have done such an extraordinary job with extending the fun and hosting lots of family friendly events throughout the Fall. Fall also feels like a Fresh Start. Another opportunity to live our best life and embrace each day and take on some changes that make us grow. But first, try to soak up the final days of summer and enjoy them while you can. Happy Labor Day weekend!

he origins of Labor Day were based in the labor movement of the United States over one hundred years ago. Now, the celebration has strayed from its original roots. Back in the late 1800’s, major corporations had worked their way into the upper ranks of the US federal government. This corruption caused great division among the American people of the day who watched companies get larger and larger while individuals often suffered through long work

days and work weeks for little pay. The increasing mistreatment of the workers by the corporations caused protests and riots among the people. These working- class folks were then shut down at the hands of US Marshals and other peacekeeping units. This led to a political movement among the working-class people, backed by the New York City labor unions. In order to appease the growing class of working class Americans, President Grover Cleveland had Labor Day introduced as a federal holiday. It passed in six days.

In April, the EHT Nature Reserve Committee held an “EHT Community Pride Day” requesting volunteers to help clean debris. Helpers were then treated to lunch and refreshments. In addition to the lake and woodland areas, a third component of the park is the arboretum tract which features an environmental learning center with an education pavilion, garden areas, and

Surfers Set To Ride Waves To Fight Cancer Get On Board For The 19th Annual Surf For A Cause

ARGATE CITY – Whether or not there is surf on Saturday, Sept. 7, the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation is sure to make waves with its 19th annual Surf For A Cause. Every year on Decatur Avenue beach in front of Lucy The Elephant, this surfing contest and beach party helps raise money to help those affected by cancer. Surfers, who have registered online at TheDRCF.org, are required to check-in at 7 a.m. with competitive surfing beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing throughout the day. Representatives from the South Jersey Boardriders Club, a local member organization, will be on hand to serve as judges for the event and will hold a special surfing exhibition heat at 11:30 a.m. At noon, another local nonprofit, Heart of Surfing will provide an open surfing session for families with autism and special needs. The Icla da Silva Foundation, a recruitment center for the Be The Match Registry will also be on hand conducting registrations for the National Marrow Donor Program. Popular New York City-based rock band with South Jersey roots, The Danbees, has signed on as the headlining musical act for the afterparty. Country Music Concert Highlights Weekend Events

ountry music comes to the Ocean City Music Pier on Friday, August 30 with a concert featuring the Swon Brothers and Josh Gracin. The Swon Brothers burst onto the scene in 2013 by bringing country music to the finale of NBC’s “The Voice,” and they continue to tour and record great music. Josh Gracin first hit the country music charts 15 years ago, and he’s making the best music of his career. The country music show is a first for the Ocean City Music Pier, which has been a long-time home to the Ocean City Pops orchestra, the annual rock Summer Concert Series and countless other events. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30. Farm to Table Cooking Class Series: Part 3

his week was supposed to be our final farm to table kids cooking class of the year but it was so fun that we decided to add another date on September 7th from 4-6 pm. Of all the cooking classes that I teach, farm to table classes are by far my favorite. Kids have such a unique and meaningful experience when they harvest ingredients and then learn to create healthy and flavorful dishes. This week’s class was particularly meaningful because as kids prepare to head back to school, we taught them easy recipes that they can make for lunch or dinner during the busy school year. We are so fortunate to have the opportunity to teach kids cooking classes at B&B Farms in Egg Harbor

City. If you haven’t visited, go! On CSA (community supported agriculture) pick-up days, the farm is open to the public and any extras they have available are for sale. Farmers Jen and Ryan LaMonaca practice organic farming and provide a variety of high-quality fruits and vegetables that are the freshest around. The fun of farm to table classes is that we don’t plan our menus until the week before because we wait to see what will be available at the farm. This week we had a great variety which was vastly different from what we were cooking with in June. The peppers this season have been so sweet and delicious so we incorporated them into our menu with a vegetarian stuffed pepper recipe. We mixed together rice, beans, salsa, cheese with some spices and filled sweet peppers with that mixture. We topped them with cheese and cooked them for a half hour. Some kids had never tried peppers before and were raving about this recipe!

The kids had an opportunity to pick tomatoes so we made a mozzarella panzanella salad. Cucumbers are at the height of freshness right now too, so we chopped and tossed them with tomatoes, toasted bread, basil, mozzarella and a simple six-ingredient vinaigrette. This was also a big hit with the kids. We always make dessert during kids cooking classes because dessert makes everyone smile. We chopped

a bunch of delicious Jersey peaches, made a homemade whipped cream (using three ingredients) and crumbled pound cake. The kids then layered this into cups to make peach parfaits. This is one of our go-to recipes depending on what’s in season. It works beautifully with strawberries and blueberries too! I love when parents come to pick up their kids and seeing the shocked looks on their faces at what their kids ate. When kids have the opportunity to see where food comes from and cook with it in a creative way, they are likely to try it (and most of the time like it!). Our final farm to table class of the season will be held on Saturday, September 7th from 4-6 pm. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek at sweet potatoes being harvested and hope to use those at our next class, maybe to be spiralized! Extra Points with Pete Birds of Prey..

hat phrase could have a double meaning in this column as I could be writing about the Philadelphia Eagles, but I also got to witness something last weekend that is more accurately to the point of what I’m starting off with this week. I took a stroll along the Ocean City Boardwalk last Saturday night and got to see first-hand the effect that some LITERAL “Birds of Prey” were having on those annoying seagulls. We’ve all been there right…? You get a cone at Kohr Brothers, or you’ve just grabbed a cup of French Fries, a slice of pizza, and immediately you feel like Tippi Hedren in the movie “The Birds”…!!! Well, I’m here to tell you that Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian and his governing body are to be commended. The city contracted with East Coast Falcons, out of Lodi, and now four hawks,

two falcons and an owl fly high over the boardwalk from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily and it is WORKING…! Not only are the seagulls scared to brazenly steal food out of people’s hands, I only saw one or two of them the entire time I was on the boards…! And here’s an added bonus…merchants don’t have to put your food in “to go” containers with lids, etc. That has to reduce the amount of trash & ultimately be helpful for the environment, right? Anyhow, it was strange, but peaceful to walk the boards without the constant soundtrack of seagulls crying. I loved it and think more boardwalk towns should do the same. Now, since I last wrote, the Eagles were actually pleased to have a game shortened by lightning. The Phillies beat a perennial favorite, but then lost 2 out of 3 to a cellar dweller. College football is underway…and get ready for high school football this coming weekend! From the entertainment world, I caught up on the American version of a show that was already a hit in the U.K. Plus, I got to see a friend of mine in a small role on a hit CBS show! As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was:

The Eagles lose 26-15 in their 3rd preseason game, but the score doesn’t matter. The game was halted with 11 minutes and 43 seconds left in the 4th quarter because of lightning, and both Doug Pederson & John Harbaugh quickly agreed to just call the rest of it off. No reason to get anyonehurt! The biggest Eagles takeaway is that Josh McCown is clearly better than any other option to be the backup to Carson Wentz when the season opens. The 40-year-old was taking snaps from a 21-year-old center, but still managed to go 17-for-24 for 192 yards and two touchdowns. To me, you can just tell he throws a better ball than anyone else vying for the backup position, Nate Sudfeld included. So, it will be interesting to see how many QB’s the Eagles keep and how they resolve that logjam now. They drafted Clayton Thorson after all, but how many do they keep? With Indianapolis shocked at the sudden retirement of Andrew Luck, perhaps the Eagles move Sudfeld to Indy for a draft pick? We shall see. With one preseason game left, the Birds are really trying to just lock down the final 6-7 roster spots. Most of their roster is already decided. However, there are still health questions for about 12

players on the roster, not including Wentz. I can’t say this enough, keeping Wentz healthy is the Eagles #1 priority this season. By the next time I write, I should be able to analyze the 53-man roster for the Birds. Time for some Phillies discussion now as they continue to frustrate me. The Phillies go to Boston and sweep the defending champs at Fenway Park. Traditionally, the Phils don’t have a lot of success up in Boston, but they won both games up there, Bryce Harper hit one over the green monster, things were looking up as they headed to play one of the worst teams in baseball, the Miami Marlins. And then, 19-to-11 happened. This game will long be remembered as the LOW point of the Phillies season. Up 7-0, and later 9-7, the Phillies couldn’t stop an offensive explosion from the lowly Marlins and lost 19-11 last Friday night. Words like disgusting, embarrassing, ugly were used by fans on Twitter and on my radio show. The Phillies were without Bryce Harper, as he was off for paternity leave, but still, it’s the Marlins! Think about this, unless the Phillies sweep the Marlins the final weekend of September, they will finish with a losing record against them this season. Unreal! With a year left on his contract, if the Phillies don’t make the wildcard, I’d have to think the front office would take a closer look at Gabe Kapler’s effectiveness. College football got underway last weekend as I was happy to see Florida beat Miami for selfish reasons. Manny Diaz, the Miami coach, agreed to coach Temple (my alma mater) for a hot second and then turned around and said

“thanks but no thanks” before taking the Miami job instead. Good, I’ll be happy when that guy loses a game always…! Locally, Villanova football won on the road at Colgate. Temple football opens at home with Bucknell on Saturday. Penn State football MUST be talked about as the Nittany Lions are ranked #15 in the Preseason AP Top 25. PSU opens at home with Idaho on Saturday. And, don’t forget Rutgers is home to start with UMass tomorrow night (8/30). Hey, for those of you who don’t know, college football BEGAN on the campus of Rutgers University 150 years ago. That’s worth it to at least have an interest in your in-state team! Finally, in high school football, the action is finally here. And, because of the calendar, there’s a unique situation where there are more games than ever before things really crank up on September 13th. A handful of local teams will play tomorrow (8/30) in what’s being called “Week Double Zero”. Then, next week on Friday 9/6 and Saturday 9/7 they’ll play traditional “Week Zero” games. Ultimately, the season will open up in full on Friday 9/13 and Saturday 9/14 with “Week One” games. Hey…I can’t wait…! I have two quick ones from Entertainment as I binge watched & caught up with “Shameless” on Showtime. Sad to see the fictional Fiona Gallagher leave as actress Emmy Rossum played her for nine seasons and was excellent. The

show itself is a spin-off of a U.K. version that went for 11 seasons, and Showtime has said there will be a season #10 in the United States, so let’s see how the Gallaghers deal with oldest daughter and de-facto mother Fiona leaving. ●●My last bullet point is for my friend & colleague Damian Muziani. He’s appeared on radio in Philly and with me at 97.3 ESPN, but he’s also a working actor. I was so thrilled to see him pop up in a small role on the finale of the CBS hit show “Blue Bloods”. That’s Damian on the right with actress & series regular Marisa Ramirez as he plays “Dom” the Super of an apartment building where Donnie Wahlberg (Danny Reagan) and his partner Maria Baez are investigating a homicide. Damian got to be in a scene with the two of them and even had a few speaking lines…! Remember, you can listen to me on the radio each Saturday morning on 97.3 ESPN from 8-10 a.m. It’s the “Pete Thompson Show”, and I’ve been calling it “Breakfast with the PT”, so I hope you’ll tune in and interact with me on the air. ack in 1962, during the days of President John F. Kennedy, Ready’s first opened their doors to the public. Since then, they have enjoyed much success due to sticking to their traditional roots and creating lifelong customers. At Ready’s, you will find that the place is almost frozen in time. Their original milkshake machine even remains in the same spot as it did 50 years ago. When you enter the store, you are often greeted by not only friendly staff, but longtime loyal customers who are always ready to tell you how great the place is. Ready’s is also vegetarian friendly and offer a great veggie burger that people rave about. For those who love a good milkshake, you have to try an old-fashioned handspun milkshake from their vintage milkshake mixer that has been making milkshakes for over 50 years at Ready’s.

Leave Medical Decisions to Doctors and Families By Senator Chris Brown

magine if NASA’s plan for the moon landing was to intentionally fail first with the lives of astronauts. Only after failing would NASA then follow a plan ensuring a successful landing on the moon with the safe return of three astronauts. Thankfully, 50 years ago, NASA took great care to minimize risk and maximize success, inspiring Americans to believe if we can put a man on the moon, we can do anything. Too bad health insurance companies don’t follow NASA’s lead. In a practice known as “step therapy” or “fail first,” health insurance companies actually experiment with the lives of patients by substituting a new drug for the drug prescribed by the doctor, sometimes because the

new drug is less costly or it’s simply negotiated as the preferred drug by a pharmacy benefit manager. This practice occurs if the two drugs share the same active ingredient or allegedly have no significant clinical difference. However, insurance companies are practicing medicine when they use “fail first” to force patients onto a new drug that was not prescribed by their doctor. While patients often respond well to the drug substitute, unfortunately,

there are times the doctors already know their patients will fail on the substitute drug, which can cause harmful side effects leading to increased costly visits to the doctor’s office or the emergency room. It’s only after the patient reacts poorly to the new drug will the insurance company then cover the drug prescribed by the doctor. When the new drug doesn’t work, it can be terrifying for families. Shane, an 11-year old boy from Egg Harbor Township, has Type 1 Diabetes. Two years ago, he was playing in a swimming pool when his blood sugar dropped rapidly leaving him unresponsive. During what seemed an eternity, Shane’s mother forced sugary drinks down his throat, which did not revive him. As a last resort, his mother injected glucagon into his arm, which brought Shane back. “It was the most traumatic and God awful experience,” Shane’s mom said. Six months prior, in an effort to try out a new drug, Shane’s insurance company experimented with his medicine by switching his insulin prescription, which was working well keeping him stable for years. Within days of the switch, Shane suffered gastrointestinal upset, erratic blood sugar spikes, and weight gain, so he went back to his original prescription. Despite Shane’s negative reaction, the insurance company continued to experiment with Shane’s medicine and changed his prescription again over the objections of his doctors. Three times the insurance company denied the doctors’ request not to put Shane on yet another insulin, leaving Shane and his family powerless and with no other choice than to “fail first” on the new insulin, which this time nearly cost him his life. Everyone agrees we need to keep health insurance affordable,

but forcing patients to take a drug over the objections of their doctors simply because it may be cheaper is just wrong. This approach puts the patient medically at risk for side effects, which ultimately cost more money to treat. Health care decisions should be made by doctors with their patients, not by accountants. As we saw in Shane’s example, individuals react differently to medications, which is why I introduced a bi-partisan bill to protect patients from being forced off medicine that works onto experimental medications because they’re cheaper. First, the bill gives the benefit of the doubt to the family and their doctors by preventing health insurance companies from limiting, reducing, or denying coverage for any drugs currently in use by a person covered under the plan. We put the burden on the insurance company, not the patient, to argue for a change in prescription. Second, the bill requires insurance companies using “fail first” protocol to provide patients and their doctors with access to a convenient process, at no charge, to override the coverage restriction. Insurance companies have to cover the prescribed drug if the doctor believes the “fail first” is ineffective, will cause harm, or has caused harm to the patient. Many patients changing to a cheaper drug never notice a difference from their original prescription. However, for patients who have a history of adverse reactions to changes in prescriptions, like Shane, we need to protect them from medically unwarranted changes as well as provide them a path to leave “fail first” when it doesn’t work. NASA didn’t bet on failure, and neither should insurance companies with the lives of patients. Chris Brown is a decorated combat veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Storm, while serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. 1Lt. Brown was awarded the Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman Badge for his service while spearheading the ground offensive into Iraq. Dog Days of Summer

s the proud owner of two golden retrievers, Cooper and Callie, I know how to make the most of the dog days of

summer. One of our favorite spots isn’t a dog park - it’s the beach. The smell of salty air, rolling waves, crabs and creatures crawling - all dogs are in heaven. I drive over the Longport bridge and head over to the well-known Dog Beach. Cooper, my massive, furry, red dog, loves water. His athletic body swerves through the sand as he makes a beeline for the ocean. Callie tries to keep up, but her petite frame and short stature make it difficult. Her tongue flops side-to-side as she giddily hops along. The beach is packed full of families and dogs bounding in all directions. A

toy poodle shrieks at a German shepherd sniffing her tail. Two labs compete for a Frisbee thrown in the ocean. A mutt chomps on a horseshoe crab. Callie loves people to a fault. Like any toddler, her excitement and energy cannot be tamed and she loves up anyone in sight. Callie spots an older couple, and I know in my gut this will not end well. The couple, with a little white terrier, holler when Callie approaches. She bounces side-to-side and tosses sand in the air. Howling for attention, she jumps on to their chair and licks the woman’s face. I grab Callie and apologize. Then Callie starts to chase a seagull. Cooper sprints toward the ocean. He swims past the breakers, much farther than the other dogs. I squint toward the horizon and see a furry head bobbing on the water. He’s a happy and strong swimmer, so I don’t worry too much.

A man in a racerback tank and sunglasses throws a tennis ball to his puppy. Callie gets excited and rushes the bulldog. She is howling, squirming, and nipping the pup’s ankles. The bulldog is fine at first, but after a few minutes of Callie’s pestering, he gets annoyed. He’s barking now and nipping back. “Hey there,” hollers the man in sunglasses. “Sorry!” I squeeze myself in between Callie and the pup and grab my dog’s collar. She’s little, but fierce. My feet dig deep into the sand as I try to pull her away, but she leaps toward the puppy. She licks my face and turns back toward the man and barks. “Come on baby,” I beg. She sees a piece of algae up the beach and gets distracted. Suddenly she is tackling me running me over - to get to the opposite side of the beach. I’m suddenly soaking wet, covered in sand, and spitting blonde dog hair out of my mouth. Women gasp. Rising out of the water, smiling Cooper has a flailing fish in his mouth. I get up and run over to him. As I get closer, I find that it’s not a fish - it’s a sand shark. Proud of his catch, Cooper darts

away. He groans with pride as he circles the beach, waving the shark in families’ faces. Callie sees me chasing Cooper and gets excited. The three of us form a dysfunctional beeline, with me chasing Cooper and Callie chasing me. We’re all sandy, soaking wet, and when I think it cannot get worse, I step in a mound of dog poop. Gasping for breath, I dive onto Cooper and pull the shark out his mouth and quickly toss it into the tide. Frustrated, I lock my fingers around their collars and drag them to the car. Sitting in our car, the rambunctious doggies pant as they shake water and sand all over the seats. They climb on to the passenger seat, overflowing onto my side and lick the steering wheel. I know they’ll sleep soundly tonight. As summer draws to a close, the beach gets more and more empty. Families have school and work and the fun activities that fall brings. The thrill of beach towns soon will seem like a distant memory. During the summer, though, the Jersey Shore isn’t just paradise for Pennsylvanians and New Yorkers, it’s an oasis for furry friends, too.

A Tribute To Anthony Nicholas Giardina 1928-2019

ou may remember Anthony as “Tony the Barber". He was also known as Nino to many. He was born in Ducktown, Atlantic City and later resided in Ventnor City and then Egg Harbor Township . Tony was the owner and operator of Jackson Barber Shop in Atlantic City, New Jersey for over 40 years. Cutting and Shingling with the unique preciseness as only he could do, set him on the map for being the best barber in the Atlantic City area. Tony sent celebrities on their way with style and the finest haircut in South Jersey! Keeping up with the times he went on to certify hairstyling classes with Vidal Sassoon. He was the president of the Master Barbers Association, and honorary member of The Knights of Columbus 405 3rd degree . His ever side splitting humor and jokes created laugh-

ter that could be heard every time you sat in the big green Barber chair. His customers would become his friends for a lifetime. He was loved and will be remembered fondly by everyone who met him . Calling all Good Vibe Seekers: Free Yoga on the Beach By Christina Sciarretta

y heart pounded and my legs trembled as I sank deeper into eagle pose, covered from head to toe in sweat. I looked at my sister-inlaw- and mouthed the words “I hate you”. She nearly fell out of her “eagle” giggling. Michele had convinced me that hot yoga was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I’ll try anything once, I thought, but the thought of being in a super hot room whilst sweating profusely, sounded absolutely nauseating to me. Nevertheless, I begrudgingly agreed to try a free community class at Grace and Glory Yoga on a Sunday afternoon in September. And now here I was, all twisted up like a pretzel, shaking, drenched, definitely

smelling like toxic waste, and yet weirdly happy. “This is strange,” I thought, “I hate sweating. Not like a “love-hate” sweating either. I hate-hate (triple hate) sweating. I also turn away from almost any physical activity, aside from dance. Another thing I am not fond of is humidity... and the other people’s bodily fragrances... and…” I had an entire list of things that I loathed about the thought of taking this class that I had been telling myself since she first brought it up, but those excuses all seemed to melt away within one hour. How could this be? I’d tried going to the gym about one hundred and forty seven times. It served its purpose, I suppose, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find the motivation to be consistent. I tried great music, audiobooks, podcasts, etc, but after a few months, I just fizzled out. It frustrated me to no end. My husband, on the other hand, would set up camp under the weight bench if they let him. He couldn’t let more than a day go by without going

to the gym. He inspired me. Plus let’s be real, he had a hot bod. I wanted to be that way too! I had recently stopped teaching dance and knew that I needed to replace that daily exercise in my life, but I just couldn’t get into going to the gym like he did, and so I validated this long-standing, crazy-strong belief that I had about myself: I was an inconsistent person. I wasn’t capable of being consistent. That’s just who I was. That powerful belief grew on a daily basis. Every time I changed direction on something, justifiable or otherwise, I would water that plant and watch it grow to extraordinary levels. See, Chris? This is another example of how inconsistent you are. I

associated myself for years with just being inconsistent. It was “just who I was”. This belief permeated almost every area of my life and truly left me feeling a failure, most days. The interesting thing is that since, like Mylie Cyrus, I too cannot be tamed (not even by myself), I decided to attempt to break my own mold. I knew that if I could just prove myself wrong and remain consistent with one thing, it would mean that everything I thought about myself was a lie and that I was perfectly capable of being consistent in anything, which could eventually translate to everything. And so my journey with yoga began. It has been a year since I walked into that studio and I have walked through the door at GGY so many times, I’ve lost count. I started practicing to simply create one consistent habit in my life, but what I have gotten is so much more. I no longer believe that debilitating lie, because I proved myself oh, so wrong. I created consistent habits in my exercise, at home, in my organization, in my spirituality, and in virtually any and every area that I could find. I am NO master, but I am a work in progress and I learned something very cool while learning about and practicing yoga. I learned that my beliefs are simply stories that I tell myself, based on my own life experience. Each class, we’re challenged to “drop the story”. It took me months to really understand what that meant and how it translated to my life, but

the moment that it did, everything changed. I stopped letting my judgy and simple-minded inner voice tell me what to think, and feel, and believe, and began opening my perspective to so much more. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough space in this column (or even in Shore Local Newsmagazine) to tell you every way that yoga has changed me, but my mind is clear, my focus is sharp, my body is strong, I have less pain and more energy, and I am proud of myself... for the first time... maybe...ever. Whoa. Different story for a different day- onward! Craving Crepe Myrtles

hough many summer flowers have begun to fade, and fall bloomers aren’t quite in bud, bursts of color are everywhere in South Jersey. Crepe myrtles are stealing the show this time of year. I remember when we first bought our house, oh so many Junes ago. We had the strangest-looking tree right in front of our porch. It seemed to have no bark, but instead, had a strange, smooth mottled surface. When August rolled around, we had the treat of realizing that our “odd tree” was a crepe myrtle full of clusters of beautiful deep pink flowers. Although to my naive eye the tree appeared to be missing its bark, it was actually shedding its

bark in patches, showing one of its natural characteristics. As crepe myrtles reach maturity, their bark begins to peel, revealing interesting color variations. Since the tree is deciduous and loses its leaves in the winter, the coloration of the layers of bark provide winter and early spring interest. Because it is also one of the last trees to leaf out in the spring, it often appears “naked”. Once the showy summer blooms appear, you’ll know it was worth the wait. Sadly, we eventually tore down our dilapidated front porch and had to remove the tree

since it was too large to be so close to the house. Even our sweet neighbor across the street missed the tree since she had enjoyed a better view of its mass of pink blossoms high in the sky. Fortunately, I was able to transplant some of the saplings to our backyard. I’m sure the previous owners some 2030 years before never envisioned how large the tree would become. Plan for the future when planting crepe myrtles by considering the size they will be when fully grown. They are generally fast growers (one-two feet per year) and some varieties can reach 20-30 feet. You can also purchase mid-sized types that reach between 8-12 feet, or choose dwarf varieties which only grow about 2-3 feet, and can be grown in pots. They would make a lovely welcome flanking an entryway.

Take a drive in the southern states in the summer, and you will see crepe myrtles on almost every corner and along the highways. They are often referred to as “Lilacs of the South” because many lilacs are difficult to grow in the south due to their warm winters. (We can keep that in mind this winter, and remember how “blessed” we are when we’re shoveling snow.) Fortunately for us, crepe myrtles also thrive in South Jersey, since we are right on

Once established, crepe myrtles are drought tolerant, and appreciate our well-draining, sandy soil. Grow in full sun for optimal colorful blooms of purple, pink, white, and vibrant red. Choose the right size shrub or tree for your landscape to save yourself difficulty later. Provide full sun and well-drained soil and your crepe myrtle should love you back with its long lasting blooms. The Road to Retirement Heads West Got Gas?

efore embarking on this cross-country adventure, I did a lot of research and watched quite a few YouTube videos in an effort to glean some knowledge from more experienced travelers and avoid any preventable pitfalls. Feeling pretty confident that I was as prepared as I could be, we almost became a victim of my own hubris. The next leg of our journey was from Custer, South Dakota to Buffalo, Wyoming: a very manageable distance of 183 miles. On one of the videos I watched, an experienced RVer cautioned against driving across Texas without ample fuel, warning to never let it get below a half a tank. After

managing to coast into the gas station completely out of fuel, he wanted to pass along his cautionary tale. However, I was only going 183 miles and not across the vastness of Texas. Besides, I had the advantage of an onboard computer which said I still had enough fuel for 256 miles: to me, an acceptable 85 mile cushion. I was confident that we had enough fuel to make it. As the miles ticked away, we were enthralled with majestic scenery on the left and breathtaking vistas on the right. Then a glance at the onboard computer caused me some concern. My estimated range as displayed on my screen was decreasing faster than the mileage we were actually covering and my “cushion” was evaporating before my very eyes. The vast wilderness and open plains started to lose their luster, and in my “beautiful mind” I was trying to figure out the cause. It turns out

that what I failed to take into account was that the cruising range was an AVERAGE. The long, climbing hills on the way to Buffalo in a heavily loaded van were rapidly eating away at my mileage. I was constantly running the numbers through my head and hoping for the terrain to flatten out, but the hills continued to rise up in front of us. Perhaps my wife noticed my silence or the beads of sweat on my forehead. When she asked “Is everything alright?” I explained our dilemma as diplomatically as I could, resulting in the two of us sitting silently and me kicking myself for putting us in such an easily avoidable situation. Down to an eighth of a tank, I finally saw signs for our exit and began to unclench. How-

ever, the next sign said that our exit was closed and to proceed to the next exit. I now had only a 20 mile cushion and could feel my wife silently reaching critical mass. Mercifully, the next exit came up quickly. We found our way to the gas station and then the motel in Buffalo. I knew beforehand that on this trip, we were going to learn some lessons along the way. The vast emptiness of this part of the country was something I was unprepared for, so filling up the gas tank at every opportunity has definitely been one of those lessons. Another is to remember to replace the drain plug on the cooler before putting it in the van. I look forward to sharing what else I’ll learn on this journey. My remark about The RAF Red Arrows, is only that on this day (August 21, 2019), they stole the show, just like the band "Queen" stole the show at Live Aid back on July 13, 1985 in an epic dual-venue concert held at Wembley Stadium in London England (72,000 people attended) and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia (attend by 100,000 people). It was a global jukebox, once in a lifetime happening; yet 368,000 more people attended the Atlantic City Airshow! Scholarly Tours: Stockton Hosting a Series of September Walks By Levi Fox

hile my passion is local history, I have also been an adjunct professor at Stockton for a decade. When a colleague approached me about working with the Continuing Studies department to create a September walking tour series covering three different Atlantic City neighborhoods, I was eager to do it. I had previously created a tour in collaboration with Stockton during the spring semester 2017, and that was a great experience. In 2017, I put together a walk through the historic African-American Northside neighborhood of AC, which I offered twice to Stockton students and members of the general public as a part of that program. That tour was inspired by the African-American Heritage Museum of Southern New Jersey’s exhibition “A Time For Change,” which is currently on display at Atlantic City’s Main Library Branch through the end of August. While you should definitely check out that exhibition if you can, these upcoming tours also will shed light on important facets of our local history. Stockton’s walking tours will run for three Sundays at 10 am to noon. A Veterans Heritage Tour will kick off the tours on Sunday, September 15.

Public memory of the clubs on Kentucky Avenue. Inside New Jersey's State Korean War Memorial. Next will be the Ducktown Revitalization Tour on Sunday, September 22. The three-part tour series will end with Louise Mack’s LGBT Tour on Sunday, September 29. Some of the primary goals of the three-tour series are to cover as much territory as possible and walk through three distinct historic Atlantic City neighborhoods. Therefore each tour will be approximately two to three miles, so wear your walking shoes! The cost will be $25 per tour, or $65 for all three. Whether you do every tour in the series or only catch one, you can expect to learn something new about Atlantic City’s rich history. The first of my three-tour series for Stockton this September will honor veterans. WWI To Korea: A Veterans Heritage Tour starts at Stockton’s Atlantic City campus, then heads across the street to O’Donnell Park, passing by the iconic and century-old Knife and Fork Inn. After exploring the World War I Memorial that Nucky Johnson pushed for in

1922—though the statue in the middle of the monument was only installed in 1929—the tour heads to the other end of the park, to see the memorial area that honors locals who died in various twentieth-century wars as well as the Civil War. This Soldiers and Sailors Monument was built during WWI. The tour next stops by public art sites like the Olde Atlantic City Mosaic on the Pacific Avenue side of the former Atlantic Club Casino, as well as the sculptures and pictures in the open-air lobby of the Ocean Club Condominiums along the Boardwalk. After heading to a few more sites like the old Ambassador Hotel and the Ritz-Carlton, the tour stops by Boardwalk Hall to visit the new Atlantic City Experience Museum and learn about the role of the town in World War II, when it was turned into Camp Boardwalk. The tour ends at the official New Jersey Korean War Memorial, where I will explain how the state memorial came to be in AC. While this first tour formally ends there, I will walk people

back to the Boardwalk before everyone goes their separate ways. While the first tour starts at Stockton’s Campus and heads through what can be called the “Greater Chelsea” area of AC, the second tour starts at the Noyes Arts Garage and circles through the city’s historic “Little Italy.” The Ducktown Revitalization Tour first heads down Mississippi Avenue stopping by historic eateries like the White House Sub Shop, which has accumulated quite the collection of photos featuring famous folks since it was founded in 1946. We will then head over towards the site of Christopher Columbus that was unveiled in October 1958 on the corner of Arctic Avenue and Christopher Columbus Boulevard, but was moved to its current location in 2013 to make way for new construction. Next, we’ll stop by the site of Skinny D’Amato’s 500 Club and briefly discuss the role of organized crime in Atlantic City in the 1980s. Then the tour will turn back toward the historic neighborhood, heading to Dante Hall and St. Michael’s Church as we discuss the Catholic faith traditions

This tour will focus on ongoing community redevelopment. The final tour in the series will be Louise Mack’s LGBT Tour, which will focus on local LGBT history. The tour

will start outside the current site of Bourré. The restaurant was once the home of Saratoga, one of many gay clubs on New York Avenue and Westminster Avenue (called Snake Alley because of its curved shape) that thrived from the 1920s to the 1970s. Louise Mack’s LGBT Tour, named for

the longtime owner of the Entertainer’s Club, will cover much of the neighborhood that is being revived as part of the Orange Loop Project and will stop at the sites of closed clubs like the Brass Rail and Lark Inn. This informative tour will end at “Gay Friendly” Park Place Beach. In 2014, mayor Don Guardian declared the beach officially gay-friendly. ll of a sudden it’s all the rage. Everyone is counting macronutrients. However, what exactly are they looking for? How much is too much and what exactly does your body need? While there are many essential nutrients, they can be broken into two categories: macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are eaten in large amounts and include the primary building blocks of your diet — protein, carbohydrates, and fat — which provide your body with energy. Vitamins and minerals are micronutrients, and small doses go a long way. There are six main groups of essential micronutrients and macronutrients. While meat, fish, and eggs are good sources of essential amino acids, you can also get protein from plant sources like beans, soy, nuts, and some grains. Exactly how much protein you need daily depends on a variety of factors including how active you are, and your age. A great balanced nutritional program will always include starches, carbs. Don’t let the low-carb craze fool you. Carbohydrates are necessary for a healthy body. Carbs fuel your body, especially your central nervous system and brain, and protect against disease. Any DIET that tells you not to include carbs, is just that , a DIET! A repeat performance of the ever failing diets in vogue when the last fad diet becomes boring. Carbohydrates should make up 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calories. Now...

Before you reach for the white bread or pasta, keep in mind that the type of carb you eat matters. Some carbs are healthier than others. Opt for whole grain breads , whole wheat pastas, beans, and fiber-rich vegetables and fruits instead of refined grains and products with added sugar. On to the fats. They often get a bad rap, but recent research has shown that healthy fats are an important part of a healthy diet. Yes, fat is high in calories, but those calories are an important energy source for your body. Including healthy fats in your diet can help you to balance your blood sugar, decrease your risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and improve your brain function. They’re also powerful anti-inflammatories, and they may lower your risk of arthritis, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease. Vitamins are vital for warding off disease and staying healthy. The body needs these micronutrients to support its functions. There are 13 essential vitamins that the body needs to function properly, including vitamins A, C, B6, and D. Each vitamin plays an important role in the body, and not getting enough of them can cause health problems and disease. Many Americans do not get enough of many essential vitamins. Vitamins are essential for healthy vision, skin, and bones.Vitamins may lower the risk of lung and prostate cancer, and they’re powerful antioxidants. Vitamins like vitamin C boost the immune system and help the body heal.

Some of the most common minerals are calcium, iron, and zinc. You can go for weeks without food, but you can’t last more than a few days without water. Water is absolutely crucial for every system in your body. It’s also the main thing you are made of. Fairway Bunker Shots Made Easier

airway bunker shots intimidate even experienced golfers, but they are not as tough as you might think. Just remember a couple of key things. First, do not dig your feet into the sand. Digging your feet in lowers your body, and hands, and, in turn, lowers your club head making you hit the sand first behind the ball. You’ll want to dig in on greenside bunker shots because you’ll want to hit the sand first behind the ball to lift it up, gently out and onto the green, but it’s the exact opposite when playing a fairway bunker shot. Your goal in playing a fairway bunker shot is distance. You want to hit the ball first and hit it cleanly and hard. Make it go as far as you can hit it.

The other thing to remember is to take two longer clubs and swing 70%. Swing mostly with your upper body and take a shorter backswing and swing a little easier and let the longer golf club help you get the added distance. For instance, if you are 150 yards out, and you would normally hit a seven iron from there from the fairway, take a five iron and swing about three-quarters as hard as you would from the grass. Be sure to practice. Like all golf shots, you’ll need to hit a lot of these kinds of shots before you get good at hitting them and develop confidence. The more you do easier they will become.

The City of Somers Point Officially Opens New Transient Marina

he marina, which features 20 transient boat slips, provides an additional amenity in Somers Point’s Historic Bay District. The City of Somers Point announced the opening of its new bayfront transient marina. The marina currently features 20 transient boat slips as well as slips for tour boats and emergency vessels. Future amenities will include electric, water, and pump out facilities for transient boaters.

The marina is open to the public, and is located at Higbee Avenue and the bay. Wickberg Marina Contracting, Inc. of Belford, NJ completed the dredging phase of the project, and Walters Marine Construction of Ocean View, NJ completed construction on the marina itself. “The opening of the new marina is a welcomed addition to our vibrant waterfront in Somers Point, which also includes the successful Gateway
