'm back!! I've missed you guys. It has been one crazy summer for me. With the extreme weather, my wedding, honeymoon and house shopping I've had my fair share of some busy days. I'm back in the saddle and relaxed now. Time to get back into the daily routine. Hope summer has treated you well and you've been able to stay cool. It's been gross out there. I made a statement on facebook last week that I believe this season will go down as one of the top 5 most humid. Interestingly enough, we don't actually keep track of things like that (as we do with temperatures) but it's a gut feeling. Luckily as you're reading this we actually are on the edge of a big change coming our way

that will last about a week, at least.

I will be much less humid and feel pleasant for a change.

We've been quiet in the tropics, which is fantastic. NOAA actually came out and boosted their original forecast to bring the numbers up.

I do not agree with that analysis.

We've had a lot of Saharan dust and conditions overall haven't been conducive for the development of these storms in the Atlantic. Now, as we head towards the peak of the season, there will be some storms forming, but I just don't see it being a hyper-active season. "Chantal" got named in the North Atlantic earlier in the week - a complete waste of a name. It was a total fish storm, poorly organized too. I have a feeling you'll be seeing more questionable storms getting names attached just so NOAA can fulfill their forecast.

Certainly not the same organization I followed growing up.

o u're only as good as your team, the high school coach reminded us daily. He went on to explain that no matter how good you think you are, you are nothing without each other. But together, you can be great.

That was 1983. Those words stuck with me, as the sentiment rang true both on and off the field.

Bob and I have so much gratitude for the incredibly talented and dedicated group of contributors that make the Shore Local Team as great as it is.

Farm animals on the run in Egg Harbor Twp. Alpacas and cows caught safe.

A

lpacas and three cows were spotted galloping down Tremont Avenue, then turning onto Mill last Friday. Rd in Egg Harbor Township.

The Egg Harbor Township Police Department responded, attempting to corral the three loose cows, and five alpacas.

With the assistance of the animal’s owner, the Officers on scene were able to capture the animals and escort them back to their residence on Ivins Ave-

nue, known as Farm Critter Haven, a nonprofit animal rescue.

It was determined that the animals escaped through an open gate, which was accidentally left open.

Ocean City Keeping Seagulls at Bay

ver the past two weeks, there’s been a noticeable absence in the number of seagulls on the Ocean City boardwalk. No pesky birds swooping down for a slice of pizza, French fries or funnel cake. This is all thanks to the help of seven trained raptors. For up to twelve hours a day, these birds of prey fly high and low over the boardwalk, warding away opportunistic gulls from beachgoers and visitors in downtown Ocean City, their location being tracked by GPS. The company is utilizing seven raptors; four falcons, two hawks and an owl. One of the birds you might find flying high over Ocean City is the Harris hawk, whose wingspan is up to 46 inches and has an overall height of 2 feet. They have dark plumage, white tail feathers and reddish shoulders.

out the Southwestern United States, parts of Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Argentina.

At night, the Eurasian eagle owl will take to the boardwalk, with a weight of up to 11 lbs. and a wingspan between 4 ½ - 6 ½ feet wide.

The most distinctive features of this particular owl are their very large, orange eyes, used to help them see extremely well in the dark. They have feathery ear-tufts and are golden brown with darker splotches. The Eurasian eagle-owl is considered one of the largest living owl species in the world.

should learn to stay away from the boardwalk in search of food and go back to the ocean hunting for fish and crabs.

Mr. Swanson and his team of raptors and trainers have, so far, provided thousands of vacationers a pleasant experience along the boardwalk. From now until Labor Day, the falcons, hawks and owl will fly over Ocean City. If the initiative continues to be successful, a decision will be made that could bring the program back for summer 2020.

Coast Falcons, a bird abatement company based out of Lodi, Bergen County. Swanson has been training falcons for over 30 years and is now a Master Falconer. Becoming a Master Falconer takes no less than seven years which includes a two-year apprenticeship.

Raptor training requires a vast amount of knowledge in falconry, which is complex in raising and guiding these birds. There are strict federal and statewide laws to practice falconry nationwide.

Only those who prove their true dedication to falconry will be approved for the many licenses.

This program is new to our area and has been used for much similar seagull abatement. One such is 85,000 to 100,000 seagulls at a waste facility. East Coast Falcons were successful in encouraging a huge flock of starling to leave a blueberry farm that was losing 4050% of their crops. Swanson says the program so far has been very successful. “People are showing up from different states to try and get a glimpse of the hawks. The people here really like it.”

City officials are praising the work of East Coast Falcons. Since arriving on August 2nd, many of the seagulls have swarmed elsewhere. Swanson says that eventually the seagulls

A look back at Bader Field: The First “Airport”

hile Bader Field was not the first airstrip or airfield, it is widely considered

the first airport. That’s since the term “airport” was coined here. The description was first used in a newspaper article written by Rob-

The seaplane flew between Atlantic City and New York City.

Bader Field first opened in 1910 and aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss began passenger service from the field in 1911. The airfield was the first municipal airfield with facilities for both land-based aircraft and seaplanes.

Even before the field was called an airport, Atlantic City was quite the aviation hotspot in the earliest days of flight. In October of 1910 explorer Walter Wellman made the first attempt to fly cross the Atlantic from the resort in a dirigible named America. A dirigible is a lighter- than air motorized craft, like a blimp. The flight was unsuccessful with a rescue made on the third day of the voyage.

Atlantic City sponsored one of the first Air Carnivals in 1910. Lasting ten days, the event spawned several aviation records including Walter Brookins’ altitude record (6,175 feet) and Glenn Curtiss’ speed record covering 50 miles in 74 minutes- a blistering 39 miles per hour! Glenn Curtiss also dropped oranges from his airplane for accuracy, demonstrating his “bombing” prowess.

These Air Carnivals were regular occurrences during the early 1900s on the Jersey shore.

Atlantic City Municipal airport was purchased by the city and named Bader Field in 1922 after Edward L. Bader, Atlantic City’s mayor from 1920 to 1927. The airport hosted some of the nation’s first privately owned aircraft- many of them flown by local businessmen. On July 17th 1933 Dr. Albert Forsythe and C. Alfred Anderson became the

first black men to make a round trip transcontinental flight. They took off from Bader Field and navigated to Los Angeles and back using only by an altimeter and a map. The aircraft had no lighting or radio. Naming their plane “Pride of Atlantic City”, they returned to Bader Field and were honored with a parade.

The popularity of Atlantic City and Bader Field’s proximity to the resort kept the airport busy. Because of the draw of Atlantic City, every United States President from Theodore Roosevelt to Gerald Ford flew into Bader Field during their terms in Office.

Charles Lindbergh landed his famous Spirit of St. Louis at Bader Field after his historic solo flight across the Atlantic. In 1931 Eddie Rickenbacker, Charles Lindbergh, and Amelia Earhart all celebrated the formation of Eastern Airlines at Bader Field.

A minor league baseball stadium was built on the airfield grounds, opening in 1944. The New York Yankees held spring training at Bader Field that year, playing several games there. The Bronx Bombers used the Senator Hotel for their spring training headquarters and practiced indoors at the Atlantic City Armory.

The Boston Red Sox also used Bader Field for spring training in 1945. After the war ended, Bader Field was used primarily for private aviation.

A municipal football stadium (John Boyd Stadium) was opened at Bader

Field in 1949 and stood there until 1994. The airport was modernized, adding field lights, a control tower, paved runways and additional hangars.

Bader Field went into decline in 1978, when commercial traffic shifted to Atlantic City International Airport in Egg Harbor Township. A brief surge in activity coincided with the arrival of the casinos in town but soon subsided. The control tower, fuel trucks, and onsite aircraft maintenance disappeared in the late 1980s. It finally closed in 2006.

Back to school made easier

t is just about time for the kids to go back to school again. The “first day” pictures are about to flood your timeline while emotional moms everywhere send their babies off on the school bus.

“Which emotion” is the question! Sad moms, happy moms, relieved moms, stressed moms, overwhelmed moms - you get the picture.

While Pinterest is full of great advice for those incredibly patient and talented “Pinterest Moms,” I wanted to offer some advice for moms like myself who kind of wing it through life. Those of us that lack the “Type A” trait and just hope that loving their kids, doing their best, and just showing up for them is enough. The moms that are okay with being a little bit of a “hot mess” but knowing that your best is enough and we’d lay it all on the line for those babies

of ours. You are not alone, momma.

Here are 5 Tips to ease the transition: 1: Amazon Prime is your friend. If you’re anything like me, it’s the end of August and you have not completed school shopping. Okay, I haven’t even started but we will talk about that in Tip #2. So, why not Amazon Prime everything!?

Nothing like shopping on your

lunch break and it showing up at your door two days later. Indulge the kids in the process. It’s 2019 with modern day technologies to add convenience to our lives. I have my daughter go on Amazon and create a wish list for herself for birthdays, holidays, and the return of school.

It saves us hours of indecision and beating the crowds of other last minute shoppers.

2: Welcome Help. Grandparents, aunts, and other family members love to be a part of these special moments. Let them! Welcome the help that they offer. I told you that I hadn’t started school shopping yet but my mom, who loves to be a part of little moments with her grandkids, picked up 90% of what they need already. It brings her joy and it brings me convenience. It’s a win/win. If they aren’t offering, don’t shy away from asking.

For most of us, family is everything and we often don’t even realize that the people we love the most are struggling until they ask for help.

3: Resist the temptation to overschedule. I know that little Suzie down the street plays piano on Mondays, gymnastics on Tuesdays, karate on Wednesdays, and ballet on Friday.

I admire little Suzie, her parents, and their schedule tremendously! But I know myself well enough to know that our family can’t keep up with a schedule like that. It’s tempting to book the calendar up quickly when

you’re re-aligning your intentions for fall but try to resist the urge and focus on what’s most important for you and your family. The holidays will be here before you know it and you will be plenty overbooked.

4: Don’t compare. YOU were called to be the parent of your children.

You, and only you, know what they need and what will serve them best.

Accepting that and living in your own “mommy truth” will bring more peace and calm in your home than “keeping up with the Joneses” ever could. As you begin to see everyone share their back to school adventures, celebrate them for who they are and remain true to who you are. You do not need to keep up with anyone in this life, period.

Your kids won’t look back and remember the perfect letters on their back to school chalkboard. They will remember the love they felt, the safety they knew they came home to after the first day of school, and the joy they felt in their parents.

Do your best and forget the rest.

5: Indulge in conveniences. So maybe you don’t normally hire a house cleaner or use a meal delivery service but listen, back to school is a tough transition for everyone! If it is in your means to indulge, I encourage you to do so. You can’t do it all, you can’t be it all. Let someone else jump in and treat yourself to a little convenience. You deserve it and your spouse and children deserve a relaxed, easy going, happy YOU this back to school season.

However you parent, I celebrate you! There are no rules, there is no game plan. All we’ve got is a heart and some instincts to lead the way.

Be kind to yourself as you get ready for the next season of life. Slow down and enjoy what’s right in front of you.

These kids don’t stay kids forever!

You blinked and here they are - going into the next grade. Stop and soak it all in, as stress free as possible.

Mind Boost with Food

hen it’s time to to boost your mood with a hearty meal, people usually think of delicious comfort foods first, like a gooey lasagna, a fresh-baked cookie, or tacos loaded with plenty of guacamole. And while all of these foods certainly have a place in life, they aren't necessarily shown to have any positive effect on the brain or body, besides the fact that they just taste downright delicious. If you're feeling like your positivity levels aren't quite what they usually are, try loading up your shopping cart with some foods that boost positive thinking!

Here's the thing about eating your way to a better mood, though: You can't just eat something once or twice and expect it to immediately kick in . Super power foods are most effective when you make them a regular part of your diet. Select two or three small changes, and practice these until they are comfortable.

This will ensure long-term success in sticking with your plan, and will allow your brain chemistry time to adjust to the new eating style.

It stands to reason that what we eat and how we eat affects how we feel and how we think. There is even the potential that eating right can lead to mind boost and positive thinking . For example, when we eat clean, healthy raw foods, we cleanse our bodies of toxins which often means we can think more clearly. The simple mindfulness of healthy eating may help us get rid of negative emotions and become more present in our bodies and our thoughts.

Certain foods promote negativity.

Eating foods that are full of sugar can cause fluctuations in insulin production which affects your mood, causes cravings, and results in blood sugar crashes that leave you feeling tired.

Let’s try to Swap your processed breakfast meal to a Green Chia Smoothie. For a snack eat an apple or a handful of nuts. Skip the soft drinks and choose green tea or water instead. Eat foods that are high in antioxidants. These are known to boost moods instantly! Eat foods high in Omega 3 Fatty Acids. These foods include oily fish like wild salmon and tuna.

When you can, choose raw foods.

They have benefits beyond nutrition.

Raw foods can help cleanse your body. Processed food leaves toxins that have to be filtered from your body putting unnecessary stress on your liver and kidneys. Dyes in these foods have been scientifically linked to a myriad of health conditions, many of which affect your mood and

mentation.

ow in its 91st season, the Ocean City Pops is mixing it up with a wide variety of musical talents this summer. The local orchestra performs twice-weekly at the historic Ocean City Music Pier, and the remainder of the 2019 season promises something for everybody.

Tickets are on sale now for the following shows: “Bon Voyage!” (August 25): Sit back, relax, and let the Pops take you on a trip around the world through a variety of great music. Featuring special guest soloist and world-class bandoneon virtuoso Julien Labro. Tickets are $20 to $25.

“A Star is Born”: The Concert (Sept. 1): Three legendary icons, three beloved motion pictures, and three best-selling soundtrack albums equal one epic concert celebration.

Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand and Lady Gaga each stole our hearts with “A Star is Born.” Now a trio of Broadway/cabaret's best voices join forces to celebrate the music from

AUGUST 30 - Swon Brothers and Josh Gracin: A country music

concert featuring the Swon Brothers and Josh Gracin is set for 7:30 p.m. August 30 on the Ocean City Music Pier.

In 2013, the Swon Brothers became the first duo to make it to a season finale of “The Voice” with the help of their coach, Blake Shelton.

The Swon Brothers released their self-titled album and received a nomination for CMA Vocal Duo of the Year in 2014. They have toured with Carrie Underwood and are now busy preparing new music, including the newly released single “What Ever Happened" from their new EP. Josh Gracin fans fell in love with the Michigan native and former Marine upon his ascension onto the country charts in 2004 with “I Want To Live.” The hits came in short order for Gracin – the chart-topper “Nothin’ To Lose,” “Stay With Me (Brass Bed)” and “We Weren’t Crazy” all hit high on the Billboard charts. Hidden Gems of South Jersey —Pieces of History Walking Among Us

e can find many “Hidden Gems” by taking the time to learn about the younger days of people in our community—pieces of South Jersey history walking among us.

They have a rich past that’s been hidden over time.

Egg Harbor Township resident, Dana (Dunion) Walz, wants to make sure her family’s part in the history of Atlantic City and South Jersey is not forgotten. Her Dolly Bolen (Mogab) looks on grandmother, Lavina while “King Neptune” accepts “Dolly” Bolen was the key to Atlantic City from Miss America Margaret Goram born in Pennsylvania

Jack Dunion, Jr. and his mechanic, Joe Ortlieb, Jr. looking over their trophies after shattering two world speedboat records. in 1904. Dolly’s father sent her to Atlantic City circa 1918-1920 to care for her aunt and uncle during the great flu epidemic.

She arrived during a sad and scary time and witnessed bodies from this tragedy taken away by horsedrawn carriage.

In 1921, Dolly Bolen

saw happier times as she took part in beauty pageants in Ocean City and Atlantic City. According to her family, she was the winner of the Miss Press-Union pageant, which gave her entrance into the first Ocean City pageant and helped her earn her place on “King Neptune’s Court of Beauty” in the 1922 Miss America Pageant.

Dolly worked on the Atlantic City boardwalk as a seamstress at the exclusive shop, Madam Moghabghab’s.

Mme. Moghabghab was a cousin of

Celeste Mogab ((Dunion) in 1950’s ad for Captain Starn’s Inlet Dolly’s future husband, Cyril J. Mogab (aka Cease), born in 1902. The couple married and shared a duplex with Dolly’s sister and brother-in-law in Ventnor to weather The Great Depression.

Later, they moved to Margate with their three children, Celeste, Sandie, and Joe. The family witnessed the Margate Boardwalk wash by their 11 S. Huntington Avenue home during The Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944.

In the mid 1940’s, Dolly’s daughters Celeste (Dana Walz’s mother) and Sandie were members of the

Tonyettes and danced for “Tony Grant’s Stars of Tomorrow” at the Steel Pier. Celeste was a captain of the squad and taught tap dance with Tony. (Celeste was still dancing in her 80’s and performed a tap routine for her family at her 80th birthday party.)

In the 1950’s, Celeste modeled for Captain Starn’s seafood restaurant, and her life-size cutout was used at the entryway to Captain Starn’s. She also appeared in the restaurant’s brochure and in many ads until it closed in 1979. She had an extensive modeling career with commercial ads for General Electric, Ford Motors, and Yankee Maid, to name a few. She was also employed by the Atlantic City Press Bureau working on press releases, movies, and convention work to advertise the city as a resort.

One of the movies she appeared in included the movie short “Atlantic

Dolly Bolen (name spelled incorrectly) awaits judging in the Ocean City Bathing Revue City 1951”. Sandie made her big debut in the 1950’s as “Miss Margate Beach Patrol” and later as “Miss Atlantic City Arts Center”.

In 1951, Celeste met her future husband, John “Jack” Dunion, at an Ortlieb family party. Jack was a student at the Pennsylvania Military

In 1950, Jack made his own newspaper headlines when he shattered two speed boat records at the Ocean City Yacht Club’s Gold Cup Regatta. With his mechanic, Joe Ortlieb, Jack raced his speed boat the “Jay Dee” and broke two of the world’s competitive speedboat records. According to a newspaper of that time, The Evening Bulletin, Jack “set a new world’s record, to become the individual star among some of the country’s fastest racers.”

Jack passed away early, leaving Celeste to raise their four children alone. She was a tax collector and municipal finance officer for over 20 years, and has worked as the facilitator of senior citizen programs at the YMCA for the past nine years. She is still working hard at the age of 87.

Dolly always cherished her family, who affectionately called her Nana.

She welcomed family and friends to her home by the beach. They have warm memories of their Nana’s house as a welcome haven. She would happily accommodate the families of her

Celeste Mogab (Dunion) in ad promoting Atlantic City tourism three children, at times including her eleven grandchildren. Some of them lovingly dubbed her, “Nana Shore”.

Though the house was sold in 1979, the stories and memories live on through her children and grandchildren, and the wonderful pictures of times past.

Tammy Thornton is a mom of four, a substitute teacher, and a Sunday school teacher. She is passionate about gardening and cooking, and loves the beach.

Two Italian Apéritifs

I

f you are a regular listener to my radio show, Joe’s Table for Two, which airs every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on WOND 1400 AM, you know that one of my favorite cocktails is an Aperol Spritz.

An Aperol Spritz is an apéritif. Apéritifs are traditionally consumed before a meal to stimulate the palate, and Aperol and Campari are two of the best known apéritifs in the world, not just in Italy.

Aperol is a classic Italian bitter apéritif made of gentian, rhubarb, cinchona, alcohol and water among other ingredients.

Campari, also a bitter apéritif, is a secret recipe including over 60 bitter herbs, barks, aromatics and fruit combined with alcohol and water. Although both are very bitter, they have a complex flavor due to the bitter herbs in their recipes. That’s one reason they are mixed with other ingredi-

ents, like Prosecco, to slightly soften their bitter edge.

An Aperol Spritz usually is made with equal parts of Prosecco and Aperol liquor, with a splash of club soda and an orange slice garnish. However, many people prefer the 3-2-1 method: 3 ounces Prosecco, 2 ounces Aperol and 1 ounce club soda. Regardless of the recipe you use, it’s the perfect apéritif, or apétivo in Italian, for warm summer days – well, actually I think it’s perfect for any time of day in any season.

Campari is traditionally used in Negronis, an apéritif made with equal parts Campari, gin and sweet vermouth, poured over ice and garnished with an orange slice. By the way, you can substitute Campari for Aperol in a spritz if you like.

A famous drink made with Campari is the Americano (one of James Bond’s favorite cocktails in the film Casino Royale), which is Campari, sweet vermouth and club soda for the bubbles.

If you taste Aperol and Campari sideby-side you’ll first notice their vibrant colors. Aperol has a light orange color while Campari is darker, almost crimson. Aperol is slightly less bitter with a smoother taste

and is lower in alcohol at 22 proof. Campari is more bitter, less sweet and at 48 proof has more than twice the alcohol content of Aperol.

Although both are bitter, the main flavor component is orange – basically the bitterness of the orange rind – which is the primary ingredient in both.

Aperol was “born” in Padua 1919 after seven years of research and experimentation by the Barbieri Brothers, Luigi and Silvio, who inherited a liquor company from their father, Giuseppi, in 1912. The famous Aperol Spritz was invented in the 1950s according to the Aperol website.

Campari was invented by Gaspare Campari in Novara, Italy in 1860. He also invented the Americano (originally known as the Milano-Torrino) and first served it in his bar, Caffè Campari, in Milan in the 1860s. It appears the name was changed to Americano because Americans traveling to Italy liked it so much.

According to various sources, the Negroni was invented at Caffè Casoni in Florence, Italy in 1919. Legend tells that Count Camillo Negroni asked his friend, bartender Forsco Scarselli, to strengthen his favorite cocktail – the Americano – by replacing the soda water with gin.

Today the Aperol liquor recipe itself remains the same as it was in 1919 even though the company was acquired by the Campari Company in 2000. The Campari recipe has remained a secret since 1860; only a handful of key people in the production process know what it is.

And according to the Campari Company, despite Americans generally liking sweeter drinks the United States became their largest market for Aperol and Campari in 2016, accounting for 25 percent of its sales.

So, mix yourself an Aperol Spritz, a Negroni or an Americano, sit back, and enjoy the rest of the summer.

Views from the Shore

ike many of you reading this, I am proud to have members of my family serve in the military. My great-grandfather was a WWI veteran, and my grandfather was one of the brave soldiers who stormed the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. Shore Medical Center has a long history of supporting veterans and veterans-related causes, so it’s been my privilege to participate in Shore’s flag ceremonies, Veterans Day ceremony, and other events over the years.

I recently attended an event held at Shore called the Chapel of Four Chaplains Award Ceremony. I’d like to take this opportunity to share with you the story of the Four Chaplains, the significance of the ceremony, and little bit about the six local heroes who were honored that day.

The Chapel of Four Chaplains, a national non-profit organization, is founded upon selfless service to others in one shining manifestation of our heritage - that of four Army Chaplains who, after giving their life jackets to soldiers who had none, linked arms with one another and went down with the USAT DORCHESTER, after it was torpedoed on February 3, 1943. The Chapel of Four Chaplains serves the memory of these brave men, and carries their message of interfaith cooperation and selfless service to every part of our country.

On Wednesday, August 14, Captain Louis A. Cavaliere, US Navy (Ret.), Chairman, Board of Director, The Chapel of Four Chaplains and Veterans Advocate and Military Historian Mr. Paul Sutton presented the prestigious Legion of Honor Citations and Humanitarian Awards to six South Jerseyans who have served our country and contributed to our society in the true spirit of the Four Chaplains.

This ceremony was the first Chapel of Four Chaplains award ceremony in South Jersey since 2006.

The Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award recognizes outstanding selfless service to veterans without regard to faith or race.

The following were presented with the Legion of Honor Award: Cynthia Murray, a former flight nurse with the Dept. of Justice transferred to the VA in 2003 and

has made helping veterans her life’s work. She is the Nurse Manager at the Northfield CBOC and is an advocate for the prevention of veteran’s suicide and assists families in the aftermath of suicide completion. Murray has been published as well as recognized by the U.S. Congress for her effort on behalf of work combatting suicide.

Robert Frolow, former U.S. Army, serves as the Atlantic County Veterans Service Officer. In his role Frolow works continuously to ensure that every veteran with a valid claim gets a fair hearing and frequently an award and supplemental benefits. Working with the American Legion and the VFW, Frolow reaches out and assists veterans requiring services wherever and whenever he finds them.

The legacy of the four brave and selfless chaplains aboard the Dorchester lives on through the Chapel of Four Chaplains for future generations. The Chapel of Four Chaplains is located in the U.S. Navy Yard in Philadelphia. They conduct scholarship programs, encourage selfless service.

Herb Davis, former USAF and NJ Air National Guard. A Vietnam veteran, Davis has spent countless hours advocating on behalf of veterans on the post, county and state levels through the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion,

and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Davis has served as the chairman of the Galloway Township Veterans Advisory Board, the Atlantic County Veterans Advisory Board and VA volunteer at the Northfield CBOC as well as Stockton University Veterans Advisory Board and a member of former Congressman Frank LoBiondo’s South Jersey Veterans Advisory Committee.

The recipients of the Humanitarian Awards demonstrate their dedication to veterans by their actions and not by their words alone. The following were presented with the Humanitarian Award: Marco Polo Smigliani, a former Marine, served in Vietnam where he was wounded five times in just 11 days and earned four Purple Hearts.

After many twists and turns in his

professional life that took all over the country he settled in South Jersey and has been a tireless advocate for veterans, working to get veterans the healthcare they were promised when they entered the service as well as a voice that brings all sides to the table to address veteran’s issues.

Frederick Banner, a former USAF, is the Chief Information Officer at Shore Medical Center. He is quick to ask anyone he meets, “what do you need and how can I help?” For Banner, after work means serving as

T

he Custer State Park in South Dakota offers so much to see within a short distance. On our last cross-country trip 26 years ago with our children, we visited Mt. Rushmore. I think it was a safe bet that it hadn’t changed so my wife and I elected to skip it this trip and go to the Crazy Horse Monument, a work in progress of a likeness of Crazy Horse carved into the side of the mountain.

The Crazy Horse Center was so impressive in its size and magnitude, I found it ironic that such a tribute and commercial enterprise is devoted to someone who was imprisoned by the U.S. government when he came to the fort under a flag of truce and then mortally wounded when bayoneted by a soldier.

Our timing proved fortuitous because a Native American performing troupe put on a full show of traditional music and dance with the goal of keeping their heritage alive. My wife who has a Native American heritage was moved to tears as the performers put on their show right underneath the Crazy Horse mountain carving. Reminders of Native Americans were everywhere even if not commercially rubbed in one’s nose. Just looking up into the hills we could feel their presence; their spirit and I could not help but feel a pang of guilt of what was done to these people. Back in the town of Custer, we were hungry and in search of a typical Western period dining experienced. One such place on the main street was the dimly lit Gold Pan Saloon with real saloon swinging doors painted a bright red and a gaggle of bikers sitting outside. We walked in and it was like a scene from an old western where the stranger walks into a bar, the piano player stops playing and everyone looks in his direction. The waitress came over and said, “Are you guys hungry?” We said that we were starved to which she replied, “Well, we

don’t serve food here.” Another glance around supported her statement and we slowly backed out through the swinging doors. We did find one of the newer trendy establishments and had one of the best meals ever. The next day, I suggested we visit Sylvan Lake; a beautifully secluded, bucolic lake surrounded by high cliffs we enjoyed twenty-six years ago with the kids. Upon arrival, I was stunned to see that it had turned into a Wally World like attraction; multiple parking lots, a lodge, kayak rentals, a concession

stand and as a bonus a wedding getting ready to begin. Still, if one manages to look past all this, the natural beauty of the locale pushes all the distractions from one’s mind. We set up our beach chairs (yes, we were the only ones with beach chairs) under a shade tree, had ourselves a wonderful picnic and then set off for some hiking and photography. Sylvan Lake still did not disappoint. This was our second time in Custer, South Dakota and I hope there will be a third. We met residents who moved from far away who could have moved anywhere but chose Custer for its easy living. A very attractive option in unsettling times. Next stop heading west; Buffalo, Wyoming.

Finding Fields of Lavender

very once in a while, a disappointment leads the way to something even better. During our trip to Maine, my husband and I were preparing to leave the town of Camden, and were about to drive to our next destination. We were waiting for a used book shop to open, hoping to purchase some old books we had set aside the day before.

While we were stalling, a lavender-themed store caught my eye. The enchanting aroma of lavender wafted through the air, and I found lavender sachets, candles, and soaps. I’ve al-

ways dreamed of a trip to Provence, France, imagining what is must be like to wade through fields of lavender. The eccentric book shop owner never showed up that morning, but the storekeeper of the lavender store told us about the lavender farm that supplied the store’s products. After a pleasant 20 minute drive, we found ourselves at Glendarragh Lavender Farm, in Appleton, Maine. I was brimming with excitement to have the opportunity to visit a lavender farm without an across-the-Atlantic flight.

Owner, Lorie Costigan, greeted us from her restored 19th century barn, which serves as a drying space and shop for the farm. What a dream come true, as visitors to the farm are encouraged to wander through the fields and may even pay to pick-your-own lavender. Pollinators were in their glory as they enjoyed the fields of lavender almost as much as I did.

Jersey soil provides a great environment to grow lavender. To survive, lavender needs full sun and dry, well-drained soil. Without sufficient drainage, lavender will suffer an “instant death”. Proper drainage can be achieved by adding a layer of gravel to the soil. Unlike most flowers, lavender prefers non-fertile soil.

Though I am fortunate to have a sprinkler system to help the garden through our hot summers, constant watering is deadly for lavender. One solution would be to plant lavender in the sunniest part of your yard, just outside of the bounds of your sprinkler system. Another way I have found to control the soil and watering of my lavender, is to use pots. This way I can give them a sandy, less fertile soil that mimics the conditions in the Mediterranean. If you plant your lavender in pots, be sure to add a layer of gravel to provide proper drainage, and allow the soil to dry between waterings. Whether using pots, or planting directly in

‘Hidcote’ which is prized for its deep purple blooms, fragrant flowers, and hardiness. According to Costigan, its buds will hold color if harvested at the right time. However, its flowers are not as fragrant once dried. ‘Grosso’, a French hybrid lavender, is another type of lavender grown by Glendarragh Farm. Because it maintains its scent even after it’s dried, it is used for sachets and lavender oil. Your local garden nursery is one of the best sources of information on the plants to grow in our area. Joni, at Bayview Garden Nursery in Northfield, likes ‘Munstead’ lavender, ‘Hidcote’ lavender, and highly recommends ‘Grosso’

lavender because of its scent and hardiness.

wo more weeks…just two more weeks left in the “unofficial” summer as once we get past Labor Day, Most folks have to return to school & work for the most part. Although, ask any local around here and they’ll tell you that the month of September is often the BEST time to be on the beach…!!!

Since I last wrote, the Eagles have won a preseason game, but lost another quarterback for the time being.

The Phillies got a “Hollywood-like” home run from their star Bryce Harper in the middle of a sweep of the Cubs, but have returned to earth, so to speak. The Sixers made a stop in Wildwood. The Flyers alumni were in Atlantic City all last weekend and the final team event for the lifeguard season is in the books.

From the entertainment world, I channeled my inner “tween” and saw

a comedy about adolescence at the movies. I also spent time watching all things “Swayze” on the Paramount Network this past weekend. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: The Eagles win their second preseason game 24-10 at Jacksonville, but just seven plays in, lose QB Cody Kessler to a concussion. If you’re counting, that’s two QB’s lost in two preseason games, so the Birds had to use Clayton Thorson out of Northwestern for the remainder of the contest. Certainly not an ideal situation, but at least Thorson looked better than he did in Week #1 where his passer rating was 0.0….!!!

No surprise then that the Birds went out and coaxed 17-year-veteran QB Josh McCown out of retirement.

McCown was all set to coach his kid’s football team and talk about football on ESPN, but the chance to be a backup for a potential Super Bowl team was too good for him to pass up. This is a smart signing by the Eagles as hopefully McCown will never play in a regular season game, but it gives the Birds a sense of security if, for some reason, Carson Wentz isn’t able to be on the field at some point in the regular season.

The Eagles also signed offensive lineman Brett Toth out of Army.

This is significant because in the past, Army players were required to serve 24 months of active duty after graduation, but President Trump signed an order changing that and now Toth is a beneficiary of the rule change.

The 6-6, 290 pound lineman has already fulfilled one year of his service responsibilities, and plans to continue that in his downtime by working with the Temple University ROTC program. Hey, it’s not like Toth is going to walk in and be a starter on the Philadelphia Eagles, but I say good job by the Birds to take a chance on a guy that could work out to be a future contributor down the road.

One last Eagles note as the Birds are home this week for joint practices with Baltimore and then they host the Ravens on Thursday (8/22) for preseason game #3. In the past, this game was the one you’d see the most work out of the starters, but as we’ve already covered in this column, don’t expect to see Carson Wentz out there at all this preseason. In fact, a lot of the starters won’t play much, if any, before the season opener on September 8th against Washington.

Now to the Phillies as I finally went up to see them as a member of the press last week. I was at the Wednesday night game between the Cubs and the Phillies as it also featured Cole Hamels vs. Aaron Nola on the mound.

Mix in the fact that it was the first game that Charlie Manuel was back at the ballpark as the new hitting coach and you could just feel the electricity in the air. The Fightin’s banged out 12 hits that night and folks were chanting “Charlie…Charlie…Charlie” in appreciation of Manuel being back with the club.

One night later, Bryce Harper did something right out of the movie “The Natural”. The Phillies trailed 5-zip coming to bat in the bottom of the 9th inning, and they rallied all the way back for a 7-5 win….!!! The towering grand slam that Harper hit to win the game caused broadcaster Tom McCarthy to ratchet his voice up into another level and his analyst John Kruk simply said “Oh my GOD” as the ball flew way out. It eventually came down in the second deck, as Harper raced around the bases quickly, like a little leaguer who wants to get back to his teammates as fast as possible and celebrate. It was a magical moment.

Easily the best win of the season for the Phillies as they swept the Cubs right out of town.

It’s too bad that magic didn’t last though, as the Phillies then lost 2 out of 3 to the lowly San Diego Padres. This has been the theme way too much this season for the Phillies. Here’s a fun question we asked on the radio on 97.3 ESPN the other day…what do you think is more likely to happen…? The Phillies make the playoffs…? Or Carson Wentz plays in all 16 regular season games for the Eagles…?

Plenty of folks had fun at the Pig Dog Beach Bar BQ in Wildwood last week when the Sixers brought their annual Summer Shore Tour to town. Current players Zaire Smith and Josh Richardson joined our broadcast team on 97.3 ESPN to preview the upcoming season.

Fans were able to play games, interact with players & alumni, and more. A great job by the Sixers and all involved.

Meanwhile, very quietly some Flyers royalty was at the Flyers Skate Zone on Albany Avenue in Atlantic City last week as well. For the second summer in a row, the Flyers Alumni have run a fantasy camp for folks to come in and learn from the legends. The list of featured Flyers who coached practices and games in a round-robin weekend tournament included Mark Howe, Danny Briere, Bill Barber, Keith Jones, Brad Marsh, Joe Watson, Bill Clement, Martin Biron and Ian Laperriere. Pretty cool if you ask me…!

Kudos to the Ventor Beach Patrol for winning the last team event of the lifeguard racing season. Captain David Funk wins the singles row and the team of Jerry Roche & Matt Spiers win the doubles to lead Ventnor to a win in the 53rd

A couple of sad notes now as not one, but two great men named Jack have passed away. I’ll start with Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Whitaker, who died at age 95 last Sunday morning. He was a Philadelphia native who was wounded in the D-Day invasion in France. He spent 22 years with CBS Sports, calling Super Bowl I. I remember him most calling golf late in his career for ABC Sports.

The other Jack is longtime Philadelphia Bulletin sportswriter Jack Chevalier. “Chevy” died on Saturday of an apparent heart attack at age 83. While at the Bulletin in the early 1970’s, it was Chevalier who came up with the nickname “Broad Street Bullies” to describe the Philadelphia Flyers of the time.

That nickname has stuck ever since. Condolences to both of the families and relatives of two great guys named Jack…!

I definitely felt like one of the older folks in the movie theater for “Good Boys” this past weekend.

The plot centers on three 12-yearolds who are invited to their first kissing party. Silly humor, and it was enjoyable, but I’d save your $$ and wait until it comes out on cable.

Finally, are you a fan of Patrick Swayze? Ten years after his

death, the folks at the Paramount Network ran “Ghost” and “Dirty Dancing” back to back pretty much all last weekend leading up to a new documentary about the actor titled “I am Patrick Swayze”.

If you missed it, Google it and you should be able to find it streaming online. Definitely worth a watch.

For Political Purposes ... Blatant Lies are Being Told About the Death of Michael Brown ... Here are The Facts

ince the Barack Obama and Joe Biden administration, the already difficult job of police officer has become almost impossible.

Several of the current less-than bumper crop of Democrat candidates for President have continued the practice of this disturbing anti-police tradition.

While officially campaigning for President of the United States, both Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris have falsely fanned the flames of racism and hatred by purposefully saying that Michael

Brown was murdered in Ferguson, Missouri by a "White Police Officer."

Here are the facts: Michael Brown was not murdered. Then Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson was placed in a death match for his life by Brown.

These incontrovertible facts are confirmed by Obama's Justice Department, then headed by the radical United States Attorney General Eric Holder.

Holder was the most anti-police Attorney General in American history. Despite how hard he tried to flip this script on the Police Officer (Wilson), he couldn't do it. All of the facts led to Brown being at fault.

The Police Officer's actions were officially deemed to be justifiable.

On August 9, 2019, Kamala Harris tweeted, "Michael Brown's murder forever changed Ferguson and America. His tragic death sparked a desperately needed conversation and a nationwide movement."

California state Attorney General, Harris knows this.

The "movement" that Harris was speaking about was predicated upon the bald faced lie, "Hands Up, Don't Shoot." This was a blatant falsehood, that never took place.

Michael Brown never said that he had his "Hands Up, Don't Shoot."

Yet, this big and divisive lie is used by Democrats to this day. It's on tee shirts, signs at propaganda rallies and elsewhere. Please, let's make this absolutely clear, "Hands up, Don't Shoot," never happened.

Not to be outdone, on the same day as Harris, Warren tweeted: "5 years ago Michael Brown was murdered by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. Michael was unarmed yet he was shot 6 times. I stand with activists and organizers who continue the fight for justice for Michael. We must confront systematic racism and police violence head on."

This may just be one of the most radical and divisive statements ever made by a United States Senator and candidate for President. It's an absolute lie. All of the unambiguous facts regarding this case directly contradict what Warren has said.

Like Harris, Warren also knows that what she is saying is a big lie.

However, their radical agenda always comes first. The facts never matter.

Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand moderated things a bit and both said that Brown was "killed by a police officer," instead of "murdered." But, make no mistake about it, they were implying the very same thing.

The reason that I can write this with confidence is because ... what reason would there be to bring up an incident (from August 9, 2014) of a justifiable use of force by a police officer; except that they were looking to fan the flames of division in our country for filthy political gain.

Here is the official determination regarding the Brown-Wilson death match: The Obama/Holder Justice Department officially concluded that Police Officer Wilson's actions were "an act of self-defense."

Further, the Obama administration investigation was conducted by the Criminal Section of the Unit-

ed States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, in the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Missouri, and, by the FBI. They conclusively and officially determined that "the evidence does not support an indictment of (officer) Darren Wilson. You wouldn't know this according to the radical Democrats who still promote their false narrative to this day.

Because of unscrupulous Democrat politicians, the justifiable police action instead led to weeks of protests, many of them violent.

When a federal Grand Jury refused to indict Wilson on November 24, 2014, Obama continued to fan the flames of division by stating that "we need to recognize that the situation in Ferguson speaks to broader challenges that we still face as a nation. The fact is, in too many parts of this country, a deep distrust exists between law enforcement and communities of color."

If Obama was correct about this, and, make no mistake about it ... he was not ... why did he have to use a blatantly false case to try and make his point?

Obama actually sent three United States government officials to attend the funeral of Michael Ferguson. Obama never reached out to talk with the police officer, Darren Wilson. This was a disgrace.

In the DOJ's official 86 page report, it is clear that Wilson acted in self-defense: In Obama's warped mind, Brown was the hero in this encounter. This is consistent with his entire Presidency. Obama always seemed to take the wrong side.

Despite Obama's misplaced sympathies for the perpetrator, the official DOJ 86 page report makes it clear that Wilson acted in self-defense.

"The shots Wilson fired were in self-defense and thus were not objectively unreasonable under the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits unreasonable seizures and use of force." The official report concluded that "Wilson's actions do not constitute prosecutable violations under the applicable federal criminal civil rights statute, 18 U.S.C. Section 242, which prohibits uses of deadly force that are objec-

tively unreasonable as defined by the United States Supreme Court."

This makes it perfectly clear.

Wilson was right. Brown was wrong. But, you wouldn't know this by the actions of Obama, Holder, Harris, Warren, Booker, Gillibrand and many other Democrats, who purposely lie about this to promote their political agenda.

The DOJ report states, "Multiple credible witnesses corroborate virtually every material aspect of Wilson's account and are consistent with the physical evidence."

My takeaway from this history lesson into the dangers of truth versus fiction, is to report to you that the hyper-negative atmosphere created by Obama has placed the lives of police officers all across America at higher risk to this day.

And, it's getting worse by the day.

Look at the numerous incidents, whereby police officers are having water spit upon them. Look at the recent shootings of six police officers in Philadelphia and the way that certain people outside the shootings were harassing police officers and the media in real time while shots were ringing out.

The atmosphere for police officers has become so bad that this past Friday, August 16, 2019, persons actually staged a "Free Mau-

rice Hill" rally and march on Broad Street. Hill is the man accused of rapidly firing his AR-15 weapon at police officers (in very close quarters), who (all) miraculously were not killed.

Sheriff’s Corner: Safety Tips

A

s a husband and father, there is nothing more important to me than the safety of my family. I know the same holds true for everyone who is reading this column. While nothing is certain or predictable, you can take it upon yourself to be proactive by implementing a few safety strategies. Here are some simple ways you and your loved ones can practice being safe and prepared.

1. Make A Plan Sometimes the most important discussions you can have with the ones you love are the hardest ones to have.

Take some time and play the “what if” game. What if someone broke into the house? What would you do? Where would you go? Would you run, hide, or fight (or maybe all three)? Who would you call for help and what is the number?

Thinking about these possibilities

ahead of time will help you handle a bad situation if it ever came to be. When unprepared and placed in a stressful situation, our ability to process information, make a decision, and take action becomes more difficult. By thinking ahead of an incident, you can react more quickly.

Any time I speak to people about safety, I always tell them “He who controls time, controls the situation.”

Sometimes it is just a matter of distracting the perpetrator for a few seconds so you can escape. If you can do something like throwing a coffee mug or kicking a chair, you may be able to surprise the attacker. The element of surprise can give you that moment to get out of harm’s way. It buys you time to get out of the situation. When you play the “what if” game, think of how you could control time to control the “what if” situation.

Playing the “what if” game works at home, but it is also something to do at work, at a store or even in your car. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, you can always ask yourself questions about what to do in bad situations.

2. Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings Most of us have become discon-

nected from one another. A lot of people blame smartphones, but we’ve been disconnecting long before that.

We walk with headphones. We avoid eye contact while walking down the street. Too often we walk looking at the ground instead of straight ahead.

I’m not suggesting walking around overly rigid and paranoid. However, I am recommending that you take a look around you. Make eye contact with those who are approaching you and say hello. These two simple things will let them know you are paying attention.

If you are driving, look around you.

Is there anything odd going on? If someone is coming up behind you, do you have enough space between your vehicle and the one in front of you to steer away?

3. Trust Your Gut Often if you are aware of your surroundings, your instincts will take over. That’s my third point. Your gut is like your second brain. It’s like your spider senses, and can tell you when something is off.

All of us sometimes get this inner feeling that something may not be right.

Take in the sights and sounds around you. Did someone scream because they had some cold water thrown on them, or was it the type of scream that indicated they were in serious trouble and needed help? Did that person waiting for the elevator with you just not seem right? Maybe take the next one to be safe. Often the safest choice is not the most convenient choice. However, your inconvenience is worth your safety.

If you ever observe something that you don’t think is right and are wondering if you should call for help, do it. Trust me, law enforcement officials would much rather have you call and be wrong

about a situation, then not call and have someone get hurt or worse.

4. Educated and Take Advantage of Training.

There is a big difference between a natural response and a trained response. Trainings can help you adjust your natural response to become even more effective at staying safe. For example, using angles, running laterally, and understanding that no two critical instances are the same can help you survive the moment so you can make it to the next moment, and eventually to safety. Just one small tweak to your natural response can go a long way in maximizing your survival. There are truly no magic or secret techniques, it’s just learning proper responses and repeating them they come naturally.

My office offers free active shooter/ violent intruder trainings to businesses large and small. It’s a series of lectures and practicals I call “Becoming Your Own First Responder”. We will come and talk with you in your setting about what you can do in a time of crisis. Our mysterious, beautiful backyard

hen you really get down to it, having the Pine Barrens right in our very own backyard here in South Jersey, is like living in a never-ending, episodic, reality TV show. I mean, where else can you find a place where you can go from 39,000 people per square acre to zero people per square acre, inside of a thirty minute drive? Where else can you find many, many species of plants and animals that live no where else in the world? Or a place that comes with it’s own, built-in monsters and legends that have been haunting the area and going on since before the white man even got here in the 1600’s, the Lenni-Lenape Indians referring to the place as Popuessing, meaning “the place of the dragon“?

A place inhabited by folks…”Pineys”, some call them… that were once thought to be so strange and dangerous to the gene pool as to have the Governor of NJ in 1913, James F. Fielder, try to enact legislation to sterilize them, ridding the state of future generations of “half-wits and imbeciles“. And that’s not even mentioning the clan of “Jackson-Whites”, the albino, club-wielding tribe of zombies, that are rumored to be marauding through the Barrens, in search of their next hapless victim.

Yeah, buddy. We have it all. And it’s all right here, in our back yard!

I’ve always said that the Pine Barrens is not only a real place that consists of 1.1 million acres of pristine forests, wetlands, lakes and rivers sitting on top of 17 trillion gallons of the purest water on Earth, but also, it’s also a state of mind. It’s a giant, blank canvass, waiting for any artist, songwriter, journalist, screenwriter, adventurer, or filmmaker to ply their talents, as it were, and create beauty and serenity from a place that makes up nearly one third of the most densely populated state in the nation. A

place where you can find “sugar sand” roads with holes and ruts capable of swallowing a car, rivers and streams that flow with water that looks like strong iced tea, and a place where the silence is deafening, you can hear it, interrupted only by sounds that seem to echo and echo for miles. The Pine Barrens have been described as “our heavenly, secreted place” by natural-

ists that trek along it’s miles and miles of trails, as well as by Caddy-driving wise-guys from New York alike. It’s a place of great paradox, and begs for active imaginations.

Like any place that draws strong forces from both sides of the emotional conservation poles, the Pine Barrens have become a political football, used to get votes because of what a person, party or group

wants to do, or not to do, with any or all of it, and for a million different reasons on each side. There are those for and against pipelines that are slated to traverse through or near it. There are those for and against off-road vehicles that are traversing through or near it. There are those that want to shut it down altogether, and others that see it as a beautiful

new development of neighborhoods, parks and retirement communities.

In 1960, there were even those that wanted to turn it into the largest jet port in the world, complete with a supporting, adjoining city.

But the Pines is no stranger to being fought over and monkeyed around with. A long time ago, a guy named Joseph Wharton tried to sell water from his considerable land

holdings in the Pine Barrens to the City of Philadelphia. Luckily, the NJ Legislature stepped in and forbade it.

In 1954, Wharton’s family sold thousands of acres of the family’s land to the State of NJ, creating the Wharton Tract State Forest that we now know and enjoy today.

It was long rumored that in 1850, there were no trees anywhere from the sea shore to the Delaware River, the clear-cut “foresting” practices being so severely unmanaged by the iron and glass-making companies as to completely level most of the trees in Pine Barrens for use as fuel. And in the great mysterious paradox that is seemingly always accompanying anything to do with the Pines, the abysmal practice of yesterday’s clear cutting drove the forges and glassworks west, along with the workers and their families, leaving deserted the obce-flourishing cities and towns, and allowing the Pine Barrens to regrow and rejuvenate themselves into how they were originally when they were found, and, for the most part, how we enjoy them today. But, if you look hard enough in the right places, the ghosts of the cities and towns are still there, but they’re covered with the green and the silence of time that scream deep in the woods, making the Pine Barrens of today the special, still-wild island in the sea of civilization, that it is.

2019 Hurricane Season-- A Slow Start, But Big Finish Likely

T

he 2019 Atlantic hurricane season has gotten off to a historically slow start. It has been over twenty years since we haven’t had three named storms by the middle of August. The season typically runs from June 1 through November 30. So far, the season produced subtropical Storm Andrea, formed in late May, and the season's first hurricane, Barry, in early July.

Why the slow start to the season?

There are several factors: usually the big storms start off as tropical waves that come off the coast of Africa. Dust in the Saharan Desert tears those waves apart as they approach the African coast, preventing tropical wave development. Also, water temperatures are below peak temperature. In order for systems to really get going, the water temperature needs to be at least 80 degrees. Strong wind shear is also tearing these waves apart, which can happen this time of year.

These tropical waves are torn apart before they can develop into storms,

leading to calmer weather.

However, this hurricane season may finish strong despite the slow beginning. The effects of the factors that stopped storm development so far have been exhausted. According to Dan Kottlowski, the lead hurricane forecaster for AccuWeather Inc., this may result in “a big change in the pattern over the Atlantic, going from a lackluster, quiet weather pattern to a much more active one. We are thinking this season will be back-loaded.”

Bob Henson, a meteorologist at Weather Underground, mentions two factors that could spur on storms in September. First, the Madden-Julian Oscillation. This is “a ripple of rising and sinking air that swirls through our atmosphere every 45 to 60 days,” which can spark tropical development. A second factor is “a fast-moving atmospheric system known as a Kelvin wave that's affected by the earth's rotation. When one runs into a tropical wave coming off Africa, it can give a speedy boost to swirl into a tropical storm or hurricane.” The waters over the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean near the South-

east Coast of the United States are very warm right now. Any system that comes into those areas has the potential to develop very quickly.

NOAA has come out with their mid-season prediction for the rest of the season, and they agree that a big second half to the season is looking very likely. They are predicting 10 to 17 named storms, 5 to 9 hurricanes, and 2 to 4 major hurricanes.

Keep your hurricane awareness plan close by, as we have historically been hit by storms in September and October. Hurricane Floyd, which caused widespread flooding twenty years ago, happened in September.

Hurricane Matthew caused catastrophic damage to Florida and other areas in Mid-October, and we all remember Sandy. Sandy happened in late October. I really feel that once we get our next named storm, there will be a ripple effect and there could be 3 or 4 named storms that form over a short period of time.

Do not let your guard down. We can see tropical storms in November. Although they are less frequent, storms can develop later on. Be hurricane-ready. A direct hit along the East Coast is looking very likely at some point before the season is over.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips: Plan your evacuation route well ahead of time. This will save you the stress from trying to find a shelter at the last minute. If you have pets, make sure the shelter takes them.

Keep non-perishable emergency supplies on hand. Extra batteries, candles or lamps with fuel, matches, prescription drugs, along with a 3 day supply of drinking water. It is also wise to have food that does not have to be cooked or refrigerated. Make sure you have a first aid kit and a radio.

Pay attention to when watches and warnings are issued. A watch means significant weather conditions are possible. A warning means life threatening conditions are imminent.

Take inventory of your personal property. That will speed up the claims process.

Review your insurance policies to make sure you have enough coverage for your home.

Lastly, take steps to protect your home such as boarding windows.

All these tips are essential in being Hurricane Ready.
