ob Green and his dad were off the coast of Sea Isle City, NJ, when he says they spotted this a group of 5-6 humpback whales.

Humpback whales are thought to

Summer's Flying By Letter from the editor

H

ow can it be mid August already?! In usual summer fashion, this summer has flown by too quickly.

College semesters have begun and elementary aged children are preparing to head back to the classroom.

With just a few final weeks of August before us, we still have much to look forward to. The annual Atlantic City Airshow will take over the city from the sand to the clouds on August 20th and 21st. This legendary event brings tens of thousands of spectators to our area and continues to grow with every passing year. Check out some of the highlights and schedule of events on page 24.

My favorite Sunflower field is in the Petersburg section of Upper Township. For over 20 years, it has been a family tradition of ours to go purchase our $0.50 sunflowers that were lovingly grown by a local New Jersey farmer. Read more about this magical place on page 6-7.

A Sunflower Farm - Upper Township's Best Kept Secret

f you’ve ever driven by it, you will definitely remember it.

The Sunflower Farm on the corner of Route 50 and 610 in Upper Township, is on the corner of Dennisville-Petersburg Road and South Old Tuckahoe Road, offers a breathtaking view of sunflowers as far as the eye can see.

The heavy rains this spring and summer have created a unique overabundance of sunflowers with both fields blooming simultaneously. When you are standing within the field you can see sunflowers in

every direction.

“Photographers love to come in the evening,” says Ketty. “The flowers change color, becoming a richer shade of gold. It is so beautiful.”

When I asked Westergom why sunflowers, he smiled and replied “I like how happy it makes everyone. Nothing else makes people so happy.” I had to agree.

he Ocean City Baby Parade returned to the Boardwalk for the 110th time Thursday, August 8, 2019.

The annual tradition offers a chance for parents to show off Ocean City’s newest generation. The parade

Parade Marshal Sky Brown features children (ages 10 and under) cruising the Ocean City Boardwalk in themed strollers, wagons and floats.

Marching bands from Pitman High School and Wildwood High School participated, along with the Ed Coles Band and Fred Hall. The Give and Take Jugglers performed inside the Ocean City Music Pier after the parade. Other highlights of the parade included the OCTC Spotlight Performers Show Choir, the cast of “Newsies,” Martin Z. and Mollie Mollusk, Queen Infanta 2019 Emma Rodriguez, the Ocean City Yacht Club, and more.

Sky Brown, an 11-year-old skateboarding sensation with an inter-

national following, was the grand marshal of the parade.

Brown is a professional skateboarder and surfer from Miyazaki, Japan. With a Japanese mother and a British father, she chose to compete for Team Great Britain in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, making her the youngest athlete to compete there.

She also will be Great Britain's youngest Summer Olympian ever, and the youngest Olympic athlete since 1936.

It’s a Pageant Week in Ocean City ... for Humans and Hermit Crabs

Miss Crustacean, Little Miss Ocean City, Junior Miss Ocean City All to be Crowned

ongratulations to our new Miss Ocean City, 17-year-old Ocean City High School senior Mary Grace Jamison, who was crowned Saturday on the Ocean City Music Pier. Another week of pageantry in Ocean City included the Miss Crustacean Beauty Pageant that took place on Wednesday. The Little Miss Ocean City Pageant on Friday and the Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant on Saturday.

The original beauty contest for crustaceans returned as an evening event this year.

In an annual tradition, Ocean City celebrates the beauty of hermit crabs with contestants vying for the coveted Cucumber Rind Cup. All families, kids, businesses and organizations were invited to enter their crustacean in the competition on Wednesday, August 14.

“Ocean City is the only place in the world where you’ll see a crustacean beauty pageant,” event founder Mark Soifer said with his usual sense of understatement.

The pageant was followed immediately by the annual Hermit Crab Races with the speediest crustaceans competing for the King of Klutz Award. The results of the crustacean competition came after Shore Local press time.

The Little Miss Ocean City Pageant starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 at the Ocean City Music Pier. The

pageant will include 24 girls ages 8 to 11 competing in talent and other categories. This year’s pageant includes an “Aladdin” theme. Reigning Little Miss Stevie Wright will crown her successor at the conclusion of the pageant. The Music Pier will host the 14th annual Junior Miss Ocean City Pageant at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17. Junior Miss Ocean City 2019 Julia Wilson will crown her successor after a dynamic year of service. Junior Miss Ocean City serves as an ambassador for the City of Ocean City at iconic traditions like Night in Venice, Pamper Scamper, Baby Parade, Christmas Parade, Wacky Wednesday activities and more. Contestants range in age from 12 to 15 and are either yearround residents in Ocean City, attend or have graduated from Ocean City High School, or are the daughters of Ocean City property owners. Makes 6 Servings Ingredients: ●● 1/4 cup olive oil ●● 3 tablespoons lemon juice ●● 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar ●● 2 garlic cloves, minced ●● 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest ●● 1 teaspoon salt ●● 1/2 teaspoon sugar ●● 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano ●● 1/4 teaspoon pepper ●● 1-1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-1/2in. pieces ●● 3 medium zucchini, halved lengthwise and cut into 1-1/2-inch slices ●● 3 medium onions, cut into wedges ●● 12 cherry tomatoes Directions: In a large bowl, combine the first nine ingredients; set aside 1/4 cup for basting. Pour half into a large bowl.

Add chicken; turn to coat. Pour the remaining marinade into another

large bowl. Add the zucchini, onions and tomatoes; turn to coat. Cover and refrigerate chicken and vegetables for up to 4 hours or overnight.

Drain and discard marinade. Alternately thread chicken and vegetables onto metal or soaked wooden skewers. Grill, covered, over medium heat for 6 minutes on each side or until chicken juices run clear, basting occasionally with the reserved marinade.

A look back

Chris' Restaurant and The Flying Saucer

C

h r i s' S eafo o d Restaurant and Fish Market, at the base of the Ninth Street bridge in Ocean City was a popular eatery from 1932 - 1972. The restaurant served fish caught daily by its own fleet, and the market packed and shipped fish to all parts of the country. Some of Chris' boats were used to take vacationers on sightseeing rides and fishing trips.

Gone with the Wind, Wild Goose, Flying Cloud, and Flying Pony were the fishing and touring boats. The most exciting boat was a surplus navy World War II PT boat named Flying Saucer. It had a 75 foot wooden hull with three engines, each burning 100 gallons of high octane airplane fuel an hour. It held 125 passingers and was once considered the world's

fastest motorboat ride. Because it was so fast, only the owner, Chris Montagna, operated the boat. Chris would talk to the passengers and slowly give a little tour before heading out to the open sea. He claimed it would reach 90 miles an hour. Most screaming passengers believed him as they bounced over the ocean swells. Only the truly adventurous would get there early enough to get a front row seat, one that would guarantee a good soaking.

enowned WWII Air Show Team Reveals Dynamic Demonstration on Tues. and Wed., August 20-21 The GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team, the leading vintage airshow performance squadron, will be performing at the Atlantic City Air Show – Thunder over the Boardwalk on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 20-21. The team’s six WWII-era aircraft will perform a dynamic 18-minute, low-level precision-flying demonstration.

“We are excited to reveal this season’s 20-maneuver demonstration,” said Larry Arken, squadron commander and team flight lead. “Airshow attendees will see first-hand what these ‘warbirds’ are made of.”

ABOUT THE AIRCRAFT (SNJ) ●● The GEICO Skytypers fly six WWII SNJs, the Navy’s equivalent of the Texas

In 1940-41, the SNJ was built as an advanced WWII military training aircraft designed to perform all the maneuvers of a fighter plane at slower speeds.

The Skytypers’ low-level precision-flying demonstration was designed by team members who served in the United States military.

ABOUT SKYTYPING The Skytypers “skytype” by creating giant messages in the sky with five aircraft flying in a tight, line-abreast formation.

The planes skytype by coordinating dot matrix-style messages with environmentally friendly puffs of white smoke.

A computer located in the lead aircraft sends radio signals to the other planes and their white puffs of smoke create the “skytyped” messages that are often as tall as the Empire State Building and seen from a 15-mile radius.

ith just two weeks until the final HEROtini Happening event (where the HERO Campaign will announce the winner of the HEROtini Cup at Linwood Country Club), participants in the mocktail challenge have been organizing creative and fun events to help promote their entries, and their rank

Looking to boost their HEROtini: the “Berry Safe Sangria”, Tailgaters in Galloway hosted a Seinfeld trivia night on Tuesday, where patrons were encouraged to don their favorite puffy shirt, commence with close talking, and support their efforts in the HEROtini Challenge. Giddy-Up!

Sponsored by Salartash Surgical Associates and created by bartender Renee Bancheri, the Berry Safe Sangria mocktail is a perfect summer blend of strawberries and blueberries, inspired by the original beverage, but made “sans-gria” to ensure safe driving. Patrons at the event were encouraged to sample the mocktail as they answered five rounds of Seinfeld-related trivia questions, all focusing on the iconic show and its four main characters. And while voting for #27 was encouraged, double-dipping was not.

In addition to promoting the Tailgaters’ entry in the HEROtini Challenge, the event also benefitted the HERO Campaign’s “Holiday HEROes Safe Ride Program”, intended to promote one of the 31 mocktails in the HEROtini Challenge, and the importance of safe and sober driving.

Elliott HERO Campaign over Memorial Day Weekend, the HEROtini Challenge is a summer-long contest between 31 Atlantic County restaurants and bars, challenging each to create the best “mocktail” in celebration of designated drivers. Participating establishments have planned numerous events to promote their unique HEROtini, including an upcoming celebrity bar-

Nutritious Foods For The Entire Year

t’s still summer! Yet we are getting ready to start a new season. With the changing of the seasons, also comes a change in the availability of fresh local food items. Not all foods will be available to us in every season but that’s okay because when we choose our foods according to the season we will be giving our body what it needs most for that particular time of the year.

Summer means much warmer, longer days with plenty of direct sunlight. It is a time for plenty of outdoor activities: swimming, boating, hiking and camping and more. It is also a time when we have to ensure that we are hydrating ourselves well and finding ways to cool ourselves down on those hot days.

Summer is a time for lighter eating with more water-dense foods, more raw and fresh fruits, vegetables and salads that will help to keep us well hydrated.

There is still time to enjoy Some of the great Summer food selections !

Beets, Bell peppers, Cabbage, Celery, Cucumber, Eggplant, Green peas Green and yellow beans, Sprouted beans, Spinach, Summer squash (zucchini), Radish, Tomato, Lettuce, Avocado, Berries (blackberry, blueberry, raspberry, strawberry), Grapefruit Lemon, Lime, Melons (cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon), Orange, Peach, Tropical fruits (banana, mango, pineapple) Fall is right around the bend, and with this will come a pretty drastic change in the weather; our days

become cooler and our nights start to become cold enough for the furnace to switch on. We no longer have as much direct strong sunlight and our days start to become shorter and shorter. I don’t know about you, but I find myself chilled for about the first 2-3 weeks of the Fall Season and I start to want more warming, hearty foods like homemade soups and casseroles; and as luck would have it the foods being harvested right now are perfect for these dishes.

The Fall Season gives us those richer, denser foods like hearty squashes and pumpkins, whole grains and legumes; food items that require more cooking and that tend to have more calories, fats and proteins then the much lighter water-dense Spring and Summer foods. Enjoy these fall foods!

Winter will be here before we know it (Sorry to all of those who are not a lover of this Season) but it is on its way!)

Winter means COLD days, COLDER nights and very little direct sunlight; it often gets dark before we even sit down for Supper, which can leave us feeling tired and unmotivated. I find that meal planning and preparation can be very helpful for people who are negatively affected by the lack of sunshine/daylight; it’s a great way to make sure that we are eating healthy meals and not just grabbing a “quick fix."

Winter is a time when we need more cooked and warming foods like soup, chilli, stew and pasta to help protect us from the cold temperatures; our body is in need of more heat at this time of year and these foods will help provide us with that.

Winter food selections are not really all that different from the Fall (Autumn) selections and include

items like: Potato, Sweet Potato, Yam, Squash (acorn, buttercup, butternut, spaghetti), Turnip, Rutabaga, Onion, Bell Peppers, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Apples, Dates, Figs, Pears, Grains (barley, buckwheat, corn, millet, rye, rice), Nuts and Seeds (almond, brazil, cashew, flax, pumpkin, sesame), Beans (black, kidney, lentils, lima, navy) Before you know it, it is Spring, a time for warmer and longer days with more direct sunlight and a lot of growth and newness. It is that time of year when everyone just seems to have a little more “pep in there step” and it is also that time of year when we get our gardens ready for growing us big beautiful flowers and tasty, fresh foods!

When Spring arrives we start wanting lighter meals; we trade in those delicious soups, stews and pasta meals for grilled chicken and fish or a tasty cold soup or a great salad.

n Friday, August 23rd at The Superstar Theatre in Resorts Casino Hotel, Atlantic City’s Schultz-Hill Foundation will present “We’ve Got Tonight,� an evening with Sheena Easton.

Easton climbed the walls of fame back in 1981 for the smash hit “Morning Train (Nine to Five)� as well as being voted the Top Pop New Artist at the Billboard Music Awards. Since that achievement, she has collected 6 Grammy nominations as well as two Grammy’s and has sold over 20 million records worldwide. Five of Easton’s albums achieved gold status and one of her albums earned the very prestigious platinum status.

Working with giants in the music industry such as Prince, Patti LaBelle,

and Babyface, Easton went on to build a multi-faceted career including not only numerous hits, but an extraordinary career in filmography and stage as well. Most recently Easton played the role of Dorothy Brock in the Broadway Hit, 42nd Street. When talking about performing these days, Easton says “It's nice to have been around long enough to be a part of people's lives. A lot of people who come to my show are real nostalgic for the '80s.� Now, thanks to the Schultz-Hill Foundation, Sheena Easton will appear for a very special one night only nostalgic performance.

This extraordinary night isn’t just about having the opportunity to spend the evening watching this icon perform, but it is for an excellent cause as well. All of the proceeds for this epic event will go to the Schultz-Hill Foundation. The Schultz-Hill Foundation organizes one major benefit performance annually to support their

year-long arts outreach programs. This nonprofit 501(c)3 supports the arts, history and education throughout South Jersey with an emphasis on our urban youth and seniors. Shultz-Hill programs include the Dina Scholarships that was formed to support individuals who are enrolled in various arts, historical or educational programs, and organizations working in these areas as well

as The Senior Music Series, a summer music program with the Atlantic City Day Nursery and the Arts Outreach collaborative with the Bay Atlantic Symphony and the Atlantic City Public Schools. The Foundation’s mission, as well as the passion of the trustees’ and their personal beliefs are the catalyst that drives these programs forward which, in turn, contribute back to the local communities and help support the arts in our region.

To date, the Foundation has awarded over $150,000 in student scholarships and both art and historical grants.

Although VIP tickets for Sheena Easton are sold out, general admission seating is still available for $35 and preferred seating tickets are $55. Both tickets may be purchased through Ticketmaster or at the Resorts box office.

Extra Points with Pete

elcome home to the Fourth Place Phillies.

Ugh. A recent 2-5 road trip by the baseball team has many Philly sports fans turning their focus to football & the Eagles. It’s always interesting around here as there are plenty of Birds fans, but certainly a plethora of Giants & Jets fans too. Plus, go to any pocket of the country & you’ll find Dallas fans. Back in the 1970’s & 1980’s, the Cowboys & Pittsburgh seemed to be on TV every single week. It’s my job to follow the Phillies, so I won’t give up on them yet, but can you tell that I’m starting to lean toward the pigskin myself…?

Since I last wrote, the Eagles have played a preseason game and lost their backup QB. The Phillies got one game from Bryce Harper where he looked like he was worth his big mon-

ey, but ultimately returned home in 4th place in the N.L. East. The Sixers have hired an assistant coach that was a pretty formidable player in his day. Still quiet for the Flyers, but the final event of the “Big Three” for Lifeguard Racing is in the books as Longport makes some history.

From the entertainment world, I binge-watched the 3rd season of G.L.O.W. and enjoyed 1980’s Las Vegas. In the theater, two movies are scheduled for release that have my attention. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: ●● The Eagles lost their preseason opener 27-10 to the Tennessee Titans, but the score doesn’t matter. The big story out of that game last Thursday night was the loss of backup QB Nate Sudfeld to a wrist injury. It’s a broken bone in his left wrist, so his non-throwing hand.

That’s good news and the prognosis is good too as team doctors hope he’ll only miss six weeks and not too much playing time. ●● Of course, the minute Sudfeld went down, two things happened.

Number one, folks started to say

that Carson Wentz should NOT play in the preseason at all. Number two, folks started asking if the Birds were going to sign Colin Kaepernick. Here are my thoughts on both. One, you can’t wrap players in bubble-wrap…injuries happen. I’d like to see Wentz get 1-2 series in with his starting personnel in preseason game #3. And as for Kaepernick? Why are you going to bring in a lightning rod for controversy when the guy hasn’t played competitive football in two years? Now, if Carson Wentz goes down with injury for the fifth time in five seasons, then we can talk, but right now, I don’t think they need Colin Kaepernick.

One last Eagles note as the Birds head to Jacksonville for

preseason game #2 this week.

That means, they’ll at least see their former QB Nick Foles as #7 signed a four-year, $88 million dollar deal to become the starter for the Jaguars. But will they see him on the field in live action?

Again, most coaches opt to rest their starters quite a bit during the preseason. Remember, it will be a homecoming for Eagles defensive tackle Malik Jackson too.

Jackson played for the Jaguars the past three years, but says “I’m very much looking forward to going down there. The coaches have said I don’t have to play, but I’m planning on going out there and getting a few snaps. I really want to show them I’ve still got it.”

Now to the Phillies as they continue to PH-RUSTRATE me…! (See what I did there?) The Fightin’s go 2-5 on a road trip to Arizona & San Francisco. Just one win in each of the two away parks. That’s not going to get it done. Meanwhile, the Mets have been red hot, so the Phillies at least returning home, the Phillies find themselves in 4th place in the N.L. East and two full games back in the N.L. Wildcard race.

I do want to discuss the one win in San Francisco because of the night Bryce Harper had. Last Friday night, Harper hit two home runs in a 9-6 Phillies win. The Giants fans let him have it with the heckling all series, and when he crossed home plate after his first bomb, he put his finger to his lips and shushed them. His second home run was a towering 3-run shot that went into McCovey Cove and was measured at 456 feet, but I think it had to be at least 470 or more. That is EXACTLY the Harper the Phillies thought they were getting for $330 million dollars. We haven’t seen that guy much, but it’s not like Bryce has been a bust either.

Congrats to the Longport BP for winning the South Jersey Championships for the 4th straight year.

That’s the first time a patrol has won four straight since the traditional format of a doubles row, a run & a single row was instituted in 1973, so history for Longport and well deserved too. .

A tip of the cap to the Millville 15U baseball team as they’re at the Babe Ruth World Series in Bismarck, ND. No matter how things turn out, not everyone gets to play on such a big stage. What a great trip for those kids & their loved ones…!

Entertainment now as I binge watched the 3rd season of “G.L.O.W.” on Netflix. Unlike the first two seasons, most of the storyline takes place outside the ring, but I’m okay with that. Allison Brie’s character Ruth has an especially poignant moment at the end with Betty Gilpin’s Debbie. I won’t ruin it, but I’ll be interested to see if there is a season 4 for what has been a compelling show to me. If

you haven’t seen it, check it out…!!!

From the actual movie theater, I’ll be going to see two completely DIFFERENT styles of movie very soon. “Blinded by the Light” is already out. The plot revolves around Javed, a British teen of Pakistani descent growing up in 1987 England who discovers Bruce Springsteen music & ultimately himself. Yep, that’s on my “mustsee” list. ●● And, I’ll admit to my love of silly humor as I’m also planning to see “Good Boys”. That plot centers on 12-year-old Max, who’s invited to his first kissing party and asks his best friends Lucas & Thor for advice. Seth Rogen is a producer of the film. It’s rated R. Yeah, I’m going to have to see that one too…!

nyone who knows me would tell you that I’m a huge sports fan. No matter how many games I’ve seen, I still marvel at the coordination, strength, and speed of these athletes. And just as impressive is the inner drive of the competitors who push themselves through pain and fatigue to reach their goal.

This inner drive to accomplish incredible things can come from so many places. This week I learned of a story of someone who is training for the Ironman 70.3 Atlantic City Triathalon whose motivation comes from turning a near lifetime of emotional pain for himself into a future of hope for many.

A native of Brigantine, Todd was on the surf team of Holy Spirit High School, and later went on to play ice hockey at Ocean County Community

College. “I have always been attracted to high intensity sports,” said Todd.

So it’s no surprise that Todd would be participating in the IRONMAN 70.3 Atlantic City Triathalon on September 15.

What wasn’t expected, however, is what actually prompted him to sign up and start training for this grueling event.

At age 14, Todd Gordon lost his mother, Margaret Mary “Peggy” Gordon, to melanoma cancer that spread to her organs. She was his source of security and love, and naturally, losing her devastated him. What he did not realize was the deep and profound affect her death had on his emotional health and how that insecurity transcended into every aspect of his life.

After 31 years of living his life from an emotional and spiritual place of abandonment, Todd realized there had to be a better way to achieve purpose, fulfillment and joy in life.

Difficult life events brought Todd to a place where he finally grieved the death of his mom in a healthy way.

In his own words, “the experience was painful but necessary and has become the inspiration to carry on her legacy. She taught me everything I needed to know about life in my first

14 years.” Todd’s mom taught him to be a giver of life and that big dreams are possible.

Today, Todd is doing well and working as a healthcare recruiter in Texas. “My greatest growth and opportunities came from things that didn’t pan out the way I originally wanted them to. I hope that others who may be struggling can read this and realize that there is hope.”

Shore Medical Center has always held a special place in Todd’s heart – it is the place where his mother received her cancer treatment. To honor his mom’s legacy Todd has entered the IRONMAN 70.3 Atlantic City Triathlon with a goal to raise $15,000 to benefit Shore Cancer Center.

The race will be held on September 15 which is a special day because it would have been his mom’s 77th birthday.

“The idea of carrying on her legacy is very important to me. It is so fitting that her legacy will help raise money for those being treated at Shore Cancer Center because not only did she get such great care there, but our entire family received incredible

support as well. I carried grief for 31 years. Hopefully the money I raise will prevent someone else from carrying that burden and help them grieve in a healthy way.”

The Road to Retirement Heads West An “In-Tents” Experience

I

n the chronicling of our cross country trip, it natural to relay our experiences in chronological order but events over the last couple days makes me want to put them down now before the details escape me, an ever increasing likelihood. In my desire to chat up complete strangers during this trip, I started a conversation with a seasoned campground caretaker about the most mundane of subjects; the weather here in Custer, South Dakota. He was delighted to share his local knowledge explaining how this July was the wettest month on record and there is no sign of it letting up in the near future. Not something a tent camper wants to hear. Not cat-

astrophic but it does require some planning and extra measures to be taken. Two nights ago, as per my evening routine I went to campground office for the Wi-Fi connection, checked the radar and noticed a few spots of green, orange and red.

An ominous sign if one happens to be in the bullseye of one of those cells. Nightfall came as did the high winds, rain, thunder and lightning. The wind was blowing the rain underneath the rain fly and water began dripping into the tent. Then as quickly as it started, it ended. We breathed a sigh of relief but a little too soon. After a while, it started up again this time really shaking the sides of the tent. With no internet reception at our site, I had no way of knowing if things were going to get much worse so we moved into the van until the worst of it passed.

After a little morning clean up, all was well and we went on to have an amazing day and returned to our site to prepare a delicious chicken fajita dinner. After dinner we went up to

the camp office to charge our electronics and noticed severe weather warnings on the TV for our area. Do we hunker down in the tent and ride it out or seek refuge in our van in which a friend had customized a platform for sleeping. The tent was battened down and we climbed into the van for the night. Just as predicted, the storm arrived bringing with it all its fury lighting up the hills like a rock concert but we felt safe and secure in the van and eventually slept rather soundly. Upon awakening, we saw that our tent was FLATTENED. The high winds pulled the tent right out of

its stakes and collapsed it, saturating the inside. We had our coffee; can’t start anything without coffee and set about resurrecting our campsite from the ruins. I ran into the caretaker again and continued our conversation about the weather. He said there was eighty percent chance of another storm like that this afternoon promising to soak everything once again. Looks like we are going to spend our last night in the van, pack up and move on to Wyoming. I’ll have to find another caretaker there to chat up.

Somers Point's Namesake & War Hero

L

ocal hero, Richard Somers, served in the Navy in the Mediterranean Sea. This young officer came up a courageous plan. While in command of the Nautilus, he proposed to fit up The Ketch Intrepid as a fire ship and sail her into the Tripoli Harbor and explode her amongst the enemy ships. Commodore Preble accepted the plan, and the Intrepid was fitted with 1500 pounds of gunpowder, a quantity of shells, shot, broken iron, and combustibles. Combustibles were connected by a tube with the powder as a fuse.

It was intended that the crew sail the vessel into the harbor under the dark of night close to the pirate ships, ignite the combustibles, and quickly row to safety in the rowboats by the time the flames reached the powder.

The expectation was that much of the enemy flotilla would be de- stroyed by the explosion.

All men, knowing this mission could mean their death, volunteered. They included: Lieu- tenant Henry Wadsworth, Joseph “Pickle” Israel, William Harrison, Robert Clark, Hugh McCormick, Jacob Williams, Peter Penner, Isaac W. Downs, James Simms, Thomas Tompline, James Harris, and William Keith.

On the eve of September 3, 1804, the Intrepid sailed into Tripoli Harbor.

Upon entering the harbor, several shots were heard by the waiting fleet of Commodore Preble outside the harbor.

Watching and waiting, a sudden explosion was seen.

Preeble’s fleet kept vigil throughout the night, but no sign of Richard and his crew appeared.

According to the journal of a seaman in the squadron, “…the Ketch USS Intrepid got under way and was sent into Tripoli as a fire ship. Commanded by Capt. Somers, he had our green cutter to make their escape from her.

It is believed that she took fire in the magazine sooner than was intended. Another theory is that Tripolitans attempted to board and it was blown up to avoid being prisoners of their own ship. There were 100 barrels of gunpowder on board.

Capt. Somers was as brave and enterprising an officer as ever stepped on the deck of a ship, possessing every virtue that the human heart is susceptible of…”

A SHORT HISTORY OF SOMERS POINT Somers Point was originally settled by John Somers, an Englishman and practicing Quaker, who bought the land from Thomas Budd. Early names for the area were Somerset Plantation, Somers Ferry, and Somers Plantation, named after the first settlers in 1693. The land purchased originally covered all of Somers Point, part of Linwood, and went into Egg Harbor Township.

In the early years it was part of Gloucester County, because Atlantic County had not yet been named.

The name Somers Point was adopted in 1750. It was a seafaring town and sloops, schooners, and barges were built in the many shipyards located along the Greate Egg Harbor Bay, Greate Egg Harbor River, and Patcong Creek. The Sooy Boat works was ships were rolled on logs down Shore Road to Delaware Avenue, and then down to the bay. Shipbuilding and life along the water ways was a very important part of life in early Somers Point.

1. Birthplace of Master Commandant Richard Somers, USN Marker shows the birthplace of Richard Somers – born 1778, died 1804. Numerous memorials were given to Master Commandant Somers, including the honor of having seven ships named USS Somers, and a monument at the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD. 2. Site of Colonel Richard Somers Tav- ern and Homestead, circa 1771, later called the Deborah Jane Somers Anderson House Col. Richard Somers was prominent in the Revolutionary War, engaging in privateering, holding interest in several schooners and the militia. The present home served as an inn and tavern, and was later the home of Deborah Jane Somers Anderson, daughter of Richard L. Somers, the last Somers to own the Man- sion. Go inside to see where the old structure connects with the new by means of a glass atrium. County and city historical plaque.

3. Colonel Richard Somers Family Burial Plot / New York Avenue School Original gravestones of the Col. Richard Somers family, circa 1790, are in the south wall. The monument in the center of the plot, erected in 1850, is dedicated to Mas- ter Commandant Richard Somers, USN, who died September 4, 1804, in the Battle of Tripoli.

New York Avenue School, built in 1912, replaced a small wooden schoolhouse adjacent to the burial plot. It is used today as Administration Offices, as well as Pre K and K classes.

4. Somers Point Historical Museum (745 Shore Road – next to City Hall) This building, originally the West Jersey Baptist Church, was built in 1886 on land do- nated by Jesse Somers. The one-story frame structure is Colonial-style architecture, with a small belfry and plain glass windows. It now serves as the local historical museum. Phone for hours: (609) 927-2900.

5. Somers Point City Hall / Richard Somers Display This 1985 building houses municipal of- fices and police headquarters. In the council chambers is a permanent photo exhibit from the US Naval Archives honoring Richard Somers, naval hero.

6. Richard Somers Monument and Park (Future Mural Project) The monument dedicated to Barbary War hero Richard Somers, who died in the explosion of the Intrepid in Tripoli, Libya, was dedicated in 2013.

The bronze bust duplicates the bust from Somers, New York, sculpted by Luigi Badia.

7. Atlantic County Historical Society (907 Shore Road) The Atlantic County Historical Society has been preserving the history of Atlantic 1913. Volunteer staff is available to assist visiting researchers and genealogists in the library, which is the largest repository of historical and genealogical documents in the county. Free, guided tours are offered in the museum, where more than 20,000 pieces of local history are waiting to be discovered. 8. Historic Somers Mansion Built between 1720 and 1726 byRichard Somers, son of John Somers, the first area settler, it is Atlantic County’s oldest house still standing.

It is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, and the Historic American Buildings Survey.

9. Somers Family Cemetery The headstones in the small family plot mark the graves of early members of the Somers family through the 1800s.The large monument marks the resting place of Rich- ard L. Somers and his wives, the last Somers’ owners of the Mansion.

10. Job’s Ferry Marker This location was named for John Somers’ 11th child. In 1695 John Somers was granted permission to join Great Egg Harbor and Cape May County by means of a ferry across the Great Egg Harbor Bay near this location. President Trump is not ... A Racist, Supremacist, White Nationalist, Misogynist or a Xenophobe

his is not the column I wanted to write. This is the column that I had to write!

The conduct of Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren, Robert Francis O'Rourke, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Julian Castro, most of the Democrat advocacy media and many others too numerous to mention have crossed the line.

They have engaged in a strategic campaign to declare that United States President Donald Trump is a racist, white supremacist and/or white nationalist.

I know President Trump. Presi-

dent Trump and I have been friends for more than 30 years. President Trump is not a racist. President Trump is not a white supremacist.

President Trump is not a white nationalist. President Trump is also not a misogynist or xenophobe.

Despite these truths, The Democrats are waging a filthy and divisive campaign that President Trump is all of these things and more.

This is a new low for the Democrat Party. Remember that the Democrat Party is the party of racism. They are the party of the Ku Klux Klan. Many Democrats aggressively fought to keep the historic 1960's civil rights era legislation from passing.

Biden has a long record of racist comments leveled against Barack Obama and others. Regarding Obama, Biden said about him that "I mean you've got the first sort of mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."

Just imagine a Republican saying

that about Obama. Their career in national electoral politics would be over quicker than you can say ... it's over.

Then, there was the time that Biden emoted another racist slam against people of color, when Biden was shaking hands with a man and boasting about his support among what Biden called "Indian-Americans."

"I've had a great relationship.

In Delaware, the largest growth in population is Indian-Americans moving from India. You cannot go to a 7-Eleven or a Dunkin' Donuts unless you have a slight Indian accent. I'm not joking," said Biden.

Again, imagine any Republican making this comment? It would career-ending.

Biden did it again last week, when he said, "poor kids are just as bright as white kids." These are referred to as "Joe Biden Moments." He is having them with great regularity during his third campaign for President.

Senator Harris basically called Biden a racist in the first Democrat Presidential Primary debate. Harris was aggressively attacking Biden about recent comments he made about his "fond memories of working well with segregationist senators" during the civil rights era.

O'Rourke's public comments about the President have been some of the worst that any candidate for President has ever uttered. He regularly calls President Trump "a racist and white nationalist."

Warren has called President Trump a "supremacist."

Booker said that "Donald Trump is responsible for this (the el Paso mass shooting). He is responsible because he is stoking fears and hatred and bigotry," said Booker.

The Castro twin brothers have been vicious and nasty. With Joaquin Castro releasing the names and employers of President Trump donors.

This placed a dangerous target on innocent Americans.

Another thing that all of these Democrat provocateurs and haters have in common is that they are shamelessly fundraising off of this blatantly dishonest race campaign.

Here's the truth as I see it: These Democrat candidates for President and their accomplices in the media know that they cannot defeat President Trump on November 3, 2020

on the real issues. So, they have resorted to this racially charged echo chamber attack campaign against The President.

They are willing to burn "The House" down in order to get to rule the ashes. Their 24/7 over-thetop racial campaign is dividing our country. No one has ever done this before in the modern history of the Presidency.

There are no boundaries in this Democrat campaign. They have extended to every American who supports President Trump. They have gone on record to say that if you support President Trump, then you're a racist, white supremacist and white nationalist, too.

This makes the McCarthyism. which occurred between 1950-1954 look tame, mild and meek. Many were blacklisted or lost their jobs, and almost no one charged with being a communist were in fact a communist.

The Democrats are employing this same ugly strategy of accusing you of being a racist and then they subject you to unfair allegations and investigations.

This has spiraled in to an all out assault on President Trump supporters and donors. A case in point is the Miami Dolphins, SoulCycle and Equinox owner Stephen Ross is being brutally attacked by celebrities, the media and other prominent Democrats.

They have threatened him to not hold a planned fundraiser for President Trump, or, face (what I call) economic terrorism. This is when they conspire together and promote a campaign to shame Trump supporters if they dare support The President.

The President and Ross have been friends for 40 years. He went through with his fundraiser for President Trump.

The Democrats have also lost their moral compass regarding the recent terrorist attacks in el Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio. The same Democrats mentioned before and many other Democrats have directly blamed President Trump for these tragic mass shootings, which killed more than 30 people.

This has never occurred in American history. It's disgusting and despicable. No one never blamed Obama for Sandy Hook mass shootings or the other 30 mass shooting s that oc-

curred during Obama's time in office.

No one blamed Bernie Sanders for the shooting of Congressman Steve Scalise and others by a devoted Sanders supporter. Scalise nearly died during the baseball field shooting.

The Dayton shooter was a devoted supporter of Warren. No one has blamed Warren for this domestic terrorist attack.

The Democrats have decided that there are no more boundaries. They are willing to say and do things never attempted before this cycle. You an expect that more of this and worse will unfold during the next 14 months.

Democrats at the recent Iowa Democrat Fair have labeled President Trump a "White Supremacist."

Unless the American people responsibly and effectively push back, the Democrats are going to run this strategy all the way to General Election day.

They don't care how divisive this is. How much it hurts the fabric of our country. We simply cannot allow them to make this an established norm in our country, or, there will be no turning back from it.

More than 63 million Americans voted for President Trump in 2016 to be President of The United States.

The Democrats are now unambiguously calling all Trump supporters: racist, supremacist and/or white nationalist.

This is outrageous and we either have to defeat them at the ballot box, or, the American people have to make their will known. Otherwise we're going to lose the heart and soul of our country.

This Democrat strategy takes Hillary Clinton's comments back in 2016 that "half of Donald Trump's supporters belong in a basket of deplorables," said Clinton.

Now, the Democrat socialist extremists have upped this to all Trump supporters are racists, supremacists and/or white nationalists.

By comparison, the Majority Leader of The United States Senate, Mitch McConnell has large groups of Democrats yelling directly in front of his home 24 hours a day. Some are Threatening to "stab him in his heart."

They're banging pots and pans and yelling obscenities at McConnell.

The national media won't cover this. McConnell placed the video on his social media platform. His post was taken down and his account was suspended for violation of terms.

Get ready, the next 14 months will be the ugliest campaign in our lifetime. It's already so bad, that the media at all levels will not even cover the fast-approaching 2019 fall General Election.

The 2019 is election is only about 80 days away. The 2020 election is about 450 days away. Think about that.

Deadheads descend on Tropicana for Dark Star Orchestra

n the 24th anniversary of the passing of Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia, Deadheads from Philadelphia and the Jersey shore gathered at the Tropicana in Atlantic

City, to sing and dance the night away to the music of the Grateful Dead. Dark Star Orchestra, a longtime touring tribute band, provided the musical backdrop honoring the gone but never forgotten legend. Before

the show s t ar ted, a rain shower passed through and left a rainbow shimmering over the ocean. It seemed as if Jerry himself was smiling down on the throng of Deadheads, indicating their long, strange trip will never end.

Dark Star Orchestra; composed of members Jeff Mattson (lead guitar), Rob Eaton (guitar), Rob Barraco (keyboard), Kevin Rosen (bass guitar), Dino English (drums), Rob Koritz (drums) and Lisa Mackey (vocals); started the show off with a bang with the popular show opener “Feel Like A Stranger.” As they meandered through the Dead catalog with

staples like “Loser” and “Minglewood Blues,” the crowd rejoiced hearing Mattson play the opening chords of Dupree’s “Diamond Blues.” This tune was generally a rarity since its inception in 1969, and even more of a unique treat in 2019, since it is not currently in Dead and Company’s repertoire. Eaton led the band through Bob Weir’s usual cowboy pairing of “Me and My Uncle Big River.” Lisa’s backup vocals shined beautifully during “Lazy River Road,” evoking fond memories of onetime Grateful Dead member Donna Jean Godcheaux. The crowd was treated to a rare “Saint of Circumstance,” without the usual lead-in of “Lost Sailor,” then a rousing “Deal” that got the crowd moving. Rosen ended the set with “Box of Rain,” which Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh famously penned for his dying father, a fitting song for today.

After a fairly brief intermission, the second half of the show opened with a Grateful Dead favorite set-opening triptych of “Help on the Way,” “Slipknot,” and “Franklin’s Tower.” A jam heavy “Playing in the Band” came next, which led into a beautiful rendition of “Terrapin Station.” English and Koritz played a very spacey and cosmic “Drums and Space,” while the crowd danced

and allowed their thoughts to wander into the cosmos. “The Wheel� brought the room back down to earth, then transitioning into the perennial crowd pleaser “Truckin’,� with everyone shouting along with the lyrics, “what a long strange trip it’s been.� The minions of Deadheads were then treated to “Mission in the Rain,� a song from the Jerry Garcia Band catalog, proving that Dark Star Orchestra could honor all aspects of Jerry on this special day. Mission went into a reprise of “Playing in the Band,� and ended the second set.

Many people did get up and leave, thinking it was the end of the show.

But, as any Deadhead knows, there’s

always an encore. True to form, the band came back out and played “Black Muddy River,� the last song Garcia sang at the Grateful Dead’s final show, an appropriate and fitting end to the evening. Dark Star Orchestra gave those in attendance the perfect show to celebrate the life and music of a legend, whose legacy will surely continue to bring all Deadheads together as a family for years to come.

tlantic City Councilman Marty Small is hosting his last Summer Al White Event on Saturday August 24th, 10pm to 4pm at the ShowBoat Hotel, Atlantic City There are many Summer traditions based in Atlantic City that I love. These events include The DJ Expo, National Night Out, last week’s Kentucky Avenue Festival and The Marty Small All White Event.

Councilman Marty Small has taken it upon himself to produce an annual All White Summer event in AC that over the years have brought the sophisticated urban professional to AC from across

the east coast. Likewise, Small has recruited some of the top urban DJs and entertainers to party with his loyal followers here in South Jersey.

Arts give Atlantic City kids a positive focus this summer

got it! 12-year-old Yanelys Blanco exclaimed, as the skateboarder jumped the obstacle Wednesday.

She then showed the photo she captured to 14-year-old Jocelynn Sanchez-Rodriguez.

The two girls are Atlantic City Police Explorers. But this day they are among a group of fledgling photographers in a program sponsored by the Atlantic County Coalition for a Safe Community.

At the Sovereign Avenue skatepark — known as Back Sov — the kids were able to capture action shots of the skaters who started their day earlier than usual to help the kids’ projects.

Before winding up at the park, the group visited some of the murals around the city that are part of the Atlantic City

Arts Foundation’s 48 Blocks.

Across from Sovereign Avenue School, the kids took pieces of chalk to the interactive mural that asks viewers to fill in the blank after “Before I die…”

That hits especially deep for a town that has seen three teens die in gun violence this year, two charged with murder and several others wounded by bullets.

“This is something positive for them,” said photography mentor Nastassia Davis, who grew up in Atlantic City and is now giving back to the youth.

She calls her students “Light Shooters,” because they shoot with cameras rather than being part of the ongoing violence.

Griselda Zuniga, 12, has much to accomplish in her life: help the homeless, take care of my mom and spread positivity, she said of the three lines she filled out on the mural.

As the kids filled in the blanks, another group came by in yellow vests.

These four boys and three girls are part of a new diversionary program that employs atrisk youth, giving them an alternative to the streets.

“The kids are great,” said Zach Katzen, who was one of the men behind the skatepark but works with the kids through the Arts Foundation.

“I can’t wait to work on more programs.

Everything we give them they are anxious to do. There’s a lot more potential than we originally anticipated.”

This group works four days a week, and have been doing things like power washing to prepare the area before the artists work on their murals.

“It gives them a sense of ownership,” Katzen said.

Loryn Simonsen, communications manager for Atlantic City Arts Foundation, said it makes them a part of the art beautifying their city.

Success Takes Planning

chieving measurable results is something we all want more of in our lives.

As a business owner, results are my life. I have to work in my business and on my business, on top of being a wife, a mom, a daughter, a friend, a niece, and so on. Life goes so fast and it can often be difficult to keep up and achieve the results that I was so confident I could achieve at one point. Ever felt that way?

That’s usually when good ole burnout sets in. You run fast at the beginning to try to achieve results, but you fall behind. Then you try to catch up, but the further behind you get, the faster you have to run to catch up and eventually, you get so tired of running, you just stop running and stop producing quantifiable results altogether. I have been on that hamster wheel so many times, so I want to teach you what I have learned to

help prevent burnout in your life and get you back to producing the results that you want.

I believe that there is a secret recipe to producing quantifiable results. This can be applied to any area of your life: business, fitness, health, spirituality, parenthood, marriage, relationships, etc. Here is the secret recipe: ●● 80% Preparation ●● 20% Execution Preparation is not everything, but it’s almost everything. It has been said many times that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. This has proven to be a very real truth in my life. When I plan ahead of time, I am intentional with my actions and execution. I am aiming it at a specific target, instead of shooting into the abyss. The execution part becomes the easy part, because i’ve prepared everything up to and including my own mind for whatever I need to do to produce the results I want.

Trying to grow a business is a grind like I have never experienced. It is incredibly important that I do the right things each and every day, not just handle things as they happen. That isn’t operating out of excellence. Not in business, and not anywhere else in

my/your life. So I have found that the magic happens in the planning.

Think about this principle in relation to eating heathy food: if you don’t plan your grocery list and fill the fridge with fresh fruits, veggies, and good things, then what will happen? You may starve yourself until you become so ravenous, that you eventually eat the sleeve of oreos in the pantry. Or maybe you won’t. But the point is that if you don’t prepare, you’re just leaving it up to chance.

Don’t leave it up to chance. Be intentional with 80% preparation.

Because preparation is so important to achieving measurable results, I have established a series of routines that help me nail my preparation, so that I do the 20% of things that lead to 80% of the results. you can adapt this for your business or personal life as well.

On Sundays, I’m rarely available to the world. My Sunday routine is what sets my whole week up for success and when it is not completed, my weeks are noticeably chaotic and stressful. I begin my Sunday routine by washing all of my laundry and cleaning and organizing my house. I use my brainpower to craft the plan when I have quiet focused time, and then I simply execute during the week with purpose.

From there, I brain dump everything that I think that I have to do into my notebook and organize each task , holding it accountable to my GPS. I put these tasks into ●● tasks that I must do, ●● tasks that I should do ●● 80% tasks Tasks that I must do always include the activities in my GPS. Every activity in that section will lead to quantifiable results. The “should do” tasks are tasks that I should get done, but won’t affect immediate results if I don’t get them finished. The 80% tasks are tasks that perhaps others have asked me to do or tasks that will build the future of the business, but won’t directly affect the bottom line.

Once my priorities for the week are laid out, it’s just a matter of organizing them into specific blocks of time in my calendar and then it’s execution time!

When you prepare fully, you’ll take the appropriate actions to achieve the results you want, instead of leaving it to chance. Where to Eat Before Summer Ends

aybe you are from out of town, visiting the Shore, and picked up a copy of Shore Local to find out where the locals like to go. Or maybe you are a local and you rely on Shore Local for all the latest news. Either way, you have come to the right place if you want to know where to eat at the Shore. Here I will be highlighting some of my favorites that opened in the last year or so. They are all locally owned (eat local!) by hard working and talented individuals. Make sure to check out some of these great spots before the summer ends or in the fall after

the crowds quiet down.

I always get asked a lot of foodie related questions, but one of the most popular is, where can I get a great lunch in Ocean City. The answer is Dockside Kitchen. Set on the water on Bay Avenue in Ocean City, Dockside Kitchen is such a relaxing spot for breakfast or lunch. Their specialty is anything with crab and while I don’t eat shellfish, I always find something deeply satisfying on the menu like the avocado toast topped with bruschetta or the veggie filled omelet. My kids swear by the French toast which is made using heavenly brioche bread. They recently started dinner service which I have not yet tried.

Saltwater in Margate stole my heart after just one visit and I’ve since been back numerous times. They make ricotta gnocchi that will change your life (no,

I’m not being dramatic). In a town filled with pizza restaurants you probably wouldn’t think to get the pizza at Saltwater but think again.

It’s out of this world good made with the most perfect dough and a fresh tomato basil sauce. They offer outdoor seating so if you are lucky enough to snag a table outside, you can do some great people watching while enjoying a great meal.

If smoothies and plant-based fare is your thing, check out Goji in Somers Point. Not only do they offer delicious smoothies, smoothie bowls, nut mylks and coffee, the owners are committed to sustainability which is so refreshing in a business. You can bring your juice bottles back for refills and get a discount. They also offer a drive through!

Josie Kelly’s was exactly what Somers Point needed when it opened last year. A beautifully crafted interior space paired with authentic Irish fare and drinks makes for the perfect restaurant. The menu is always changing and I love seeing creative vegetarian options like the vegan garden pie and

veggie burger. The atmosphere is fun and whether you want to grab a drink at the bar, check out live music, or enjoy a meal with the kids, you can do it all at Josie Kelly’s.

ere's the Skinny on The Modern Gentlemen playing at Resorts Superstar Theater select dates through August 30, 2019.

The Modern Gentlemen were "the voices behind Frankie Valli over the past decade!" In fact it was Frankie Valli who brought these four talented singers together.

They’ve performed all over the world on the biggest stages, from multiple performances at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Symphony Orchestra, to two stints on Broadway, and performances in Asia, Canada, Europe, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.

The Modern Gentlemen have shared the stage with many of the groups and artists whose works they so brilliantly perform, including the Beach Boys.

Now the Skinny. When the curtain opened, I saw something you do not see often in Atlantic City revue shows...It was a live band. The 70 minute setlist incorporated classic mega hits from the Four Seasons, Beach Boys, Motown the Beatles and an acapella performance.

To perform the songs the Modern Gentlemen perform require four part harmony and these four perform four part harmony to perfection. You will be mesmerized by their take on the Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the

four seasons, and in fact, with every song in the set. They demonstrate incredible harmonies and strong lead vocals.

During their performance Landon, Todd and brothers Brian and Brandon offer quick entertaining banter showcasing their great personalities.

The extremely tight band all local Atlantic City area musicians, brought it all together even down to the recognizable riffs in the songs.
