The Power of the Sea Letter from the editor

I

think all our hearts simultaneously sank this past Monday, upon hearing of the loss of a father who went into the ocean to save his son, only to lose his own life. It speaks volumes of his love for his son. This dad died a hero sacrificing his own safety and wellbeing to protect his son. Thankfully his son made it to the shoreline. And although a retired police officer swam out and pulled the struggling father to shore. He didn't make it. The boy entered the ocean on New Jersey Avenue in Atlantic City before lifeguards were on duty. Atlantic City first responders were dispatched for a report of a child drowning and his father entering the water to rescue him at 9:32 a.m. First responders arrived to find the child had made it to the shoreline. But a former police officer at the beach had entered the water with a

boogie board to rescue the struggling dad. The ex-officer, Jim Glorioso Jr. from Amsterdam, New York, found the father after he had already gone underwater and attempted to pull him onto the boogie board. Atlantic City Beach Patrol Chief Steve Downey was the first to the scene, followed by members of the fire department. The father was identified as Thanh Bui, 58, of Reading, Pa. After both men we re pulled to shore, firefighters i m m e d i a te l y began CPR on Bui, who was unresponsive. Bui was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, where he died. The child was also taken to the medical center for treatment. We often marvel at the beauty of the ocean and crave its cooling, almost healing waves upon us. Yet we are all reminded time and time again of its sheer power. The force of the waves, undercurrents and under tow pose

serious risks, especially if you are not a seasoned waterman or lifeguard. There's a lot of rules and regulations on the beach, like swimming between the designated flags. They are in place for our protection, whether we see the posed danger such as protruding rocks or a nearby jetty or if we do not see the risk, such as the often invisible yet treacherous rip currents. Many come to our shores year after and many come to see the ocean for the first time. There is sometimes an illusion that our ocean is a giant wave pool. Rather it is an immense body of water that is beyond our control. It is also home to millions of sea creatures. But the greatest risk to those entering the ocean by far, is rip currents. The United States Lifesaving Association states that more than 100 people die due to rip currents each year and rip currents also account for

more than 80 percent of rescues by beach lifeguards. Rip currents, also known as an undertow are narrow channels of fast-moving water that can quickly drag swimmers out to sea. The strength and speed that the water pulls a swimmer can vary, but the currents can exceed five miles per hour. That’s faster than an Olympic swimmer can swim. The best way to keep you and your family safe is to only swim at guarded beaches during the hours posted. If you do find yourself caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore to escape it. While they are powerful, rip currents are generally narrow (around 10-20 feet). Do not swim against the current, as this will only tire you out. Try not to panic and remember that rip currents won’t take you under the water. If you cannot escape the current, then tread water or float. Be sure to call for help and wave if you need assistance. Wishing you a your loved ones a safe & joyful summer!

Peace & Love, Cindy

T

his week we held the second in a series of kid’s summer farm to table cooking classes. The classes are held at B&B Farms in Egg Harbor City. In each class we spend two hours harvesting ingredients and cooking healthy and delicious recipes. This gives children an understanding of where food comes from and appreciation for how good locally grown produce tastes. I am passionate about seasonal cooking and feel fortunate to share this passion with children. For farm to table cooking classes we wait until the week before class

time of year, can feel overwhelming. If you are tired of grilling or roasting zucchini and can’t stand to make zoodles one more time, consider making chocolate zucchini bread. Dust off the grating blade of your food processor and make a sweet treat that your kids won’t even know has a green vegetable included.

I’ve heard repeatedly from home gardeners and farmers that this is an excellent tomato season and I would have to agree. Not only are the tomatoes at B&B Farms the sweetest and most delicious, but the variety can not be beat. Just when I thought sungolds were my favorite, I tasted black cherry tomatoes and everything changed. Hopefully you aren’t tired of tomatoes yet because we still have a lot of time left in this growing season. Are you looking for a fun way for kids to enjoy tomatoes? If they like mozzarella cheese, try making a caprese pasta salad. Combine cooked pasta with fresh tomatoes and bocconcini (small mozzarella balls) topped with a simple dressing of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, chopped garlic, salt and pepper. We’ve made this in a bunch of kids cooking classes and it is always a hit. Without a doubt, the show stopper at our second farm to table kids cooking class was make your own cantaloupe banana smoothie bowls. We have found in our classes that kids love choices when it comes to topping their food. We blended frozen bananas with chopped cantaloupe and added a splash of coconut milk. We spooned that mixture into bowls and then topping choices included

blueberries, shredded coconut and granola. At the end of class when we asked what everyone’s favorite recipe was, it was definitely this one. Farm to table kids cooking classes are my favorite classes that we teach. I love when kids try new ingredients that they didn’t know they liked. Our final farm to table class at B&B Farms will be held on Tuesday, August 27th from 10-12 pm. For more information, email thehappyheartcorner@ gmail.com. See you at the farm!

Disney’s “Newsies”:

Tickets on Sale for Performances of the Broadway Musical Aug. 6 to 9

T

he Ocean City Pops and the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company (OCTC) will present four performances of “Disney’s Newsies: The Broadway Musical”s as part of OCTC’s 12th season. The shows will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday (Aug. 6, 7 and 9) and at 2 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 8) at the Bill and Nancy Hughes Performing Arts Center (beach block of Sixth Street). The professional performers were chosen through a New York City casting process. The show will be directed and choreographed by Bonnie Kelly with an orchestra of professional musicians from the Ocean City Pops directed by Jon Kreamer. Set in turn-of-the century New York City, “Newsies” is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of teenaged “newsies.” When titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair

conditions and fight for what’s right. Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, “Newsies” features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (“Little Shop of Horrors,” “Sister Act”) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award-winner Harvey Fierstein (“Kinky Boots”). Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day” and “Santa Fe,” “Newsies” is packed with thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience. Tickets range from $25 to $30. Visit www.oceancityvacation.com/ boxoffice or call 609-399-6111 .

ne of the things I’ve enjoyed as a marketer is how many interesting and talented people I have had the pleasure of working with. I’ve stayed in close contact with former co-workers and on more than one occasion, ended up working with them a year or two down the road. Then there are people that I’ve worked side-by-side with for years, and then decades can go by before our paths crossed again. And then, we’ve picked up right where we left off, as if time stood still and nothing had changed. This past week, I had such an experience when I was fortunate to reconnect with an extremely talented South Jersey artist, G. Matthew Dixon. G. Matthew Dixon….ok, that doesn’t sound right to me. I’m going to refer to him as Matt Dixon, as we all did when

we worked together at Bally’s nearly 20 years ago. I knew him as a talented graphic designer who understood casino marketing and could design an incredible invitation, an eye-popping billboard, or a catchy print ad often at a moment’s notice. (He was also very interested in the latest technology, as he was the first one I knew to have all of his music downloaded digitally while the rest of us were sharing CDs.) When I saw his name on the walls of Shore Medical Center next to the newly hung paintings in its Healing Arts Gallery, I realized that I had had the privilege of working with a true artist

all those years. Matt was kind enough to visit to Shore and talk with me about his new exhibit. The Noyes Museum & Shore Over the past ten years, Matt had come in contact with Noyes Executive Director Michael Cagno at many events, but had hesitated to approach him for an opportunity. But after a little encouragement from his wife Tara (an actor and director of plays with the Little Egg Theater Company), Matt applied to get his works into the Arts Garage in Atlantic City. Michael was impressed with his work, but the Arts Garage was booked

until 2021. He did speak with Matt about an opportunity at Shore Medical Center. Shore’s relationship with The Noyes Museum dates back to 2012, when Cagno and his team assisted with the creation of the hospital’s Healing Arts Gallery on the 2nd floor walkway of the new Surgical Pavilion. Then, when the museum announced it would be vacating its Galloway building, Shore CFO David Hughes offered space within the hospital for Noyes artwork. Healing Arts Employees have called Matt’s art as their “Ahhhhh” moment when at work. Patients have commented about how soothing and relaxing they feel when seeing them. “This hospital is the perfect place for my paintings,” Matt said. "Art can give you hope and take you places you can't be." When I saw Matt’s reaction to the smiles he was creating, I saw genuine joy in his eyes that his art was making a difference. “Shore has always been part of my life, as I was born here on August 15, 1975. It’s fitting that this part of my career was born at Shore, too. It’s great to see people enjoying the art and reacting to it.” Cedar water in his veins? With 27 pieces in all, Shore is his

largest exhibit. His paintings line the hallway that connects the parking garage entrance to the surgical pavilion and is enjoyed by hundreds of patients, visitors, and employees every day. Twenty percent of the art are scenes from Faunce Landing in Absecon or “somewhere in the swamps of Jersey,” Matt explains, “I have a mix of salt water and cedar water in my veins. In fact, one of the pictures is from Port Republic, and even captures a bit of the orange in the water.” His paintings on display at Shore are pastels, his preferred medium for his works. “I like pastels because they are a lot like life. If you are too close to it, it doesn’t always look pretty but if you take a few steps back, things become clearer.”

To Matt, his paintings are his meditations. “I prefer to paint alone and when my wife is out, so in our home it’s ‘when the cat’s away, the mice will paint!’” Matt, who attended the Art Institute of Philadelphia and is formally trained in graphic design, has become quite invested in the arts in South Jersey. He belongs to a regional “Artists Supporting Artists” Group which he enjoys because “it’s not about competition; it’s about community. We all want to see each other thrive.” Matt’s exhibit at Shore Medical Center will run through October 1. ince I last wrote, the Phillies have beaten bad teams on the road, but shown they can’t beat the best team in the NL East. The Eagles are all in the nest at training camp. The Sixers have filled their last two roster spots. Locally, the first of the “Big Three” for Lifeguard Racing is in the books. From the entertainment world, I binge watched the seventh and final season of “Orange Is The New Black” on Netflix, and I can’t wait to get back to the Tilton Square Theater to see a movie that features two of America’s biggest male stars. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was:

●●

The Phillies went 4-1 on their road trip to Pittsburgh and then Detroit, but promptly came home and embarrassed themselves losing two out of three to the Braves. The talent gap between the two teams is obvious and folks are screaming for Phillies GM Matt Klentak to do something prior to the trade deadline. Starting pitching is probably their biggest problem, but I had Matt Gelb from “The Athletic” on my show on 97.3 ESPN and when I asked him where the “drop-off” was in the Phillies rotation, he answered “Probably right after Aaron Nola”. In other words, Klentak would need to go get four starting pitchers, but I’d settle for just one decent veteran arm. Speaking of “The Athletic”, I signed up for the subscription based service and so far I haven’t been disappoint-

ed. Outstanding Philly beat writers like Matt Gelb, Meghan Montemurro, Zach Berman, Bo Wulf have all migrated there. National writers like Jayson Stark (who just went into the Baseball Hall of Fame) and Ken Rosenthal are there too. It’s well worth my $3.99 a month. In football, the Eagles are all at training camp and Doug Pederson’s message to them upon returning was “eliminate the outside noise and focus on the work that needs to be done”. Pederson knows he has a Super Bowl level team, but he’ll be darn sure that there won’t be a repeat of 2011 when QB Vince Young infamously mentioned the phrase “Dream Team” in training camp, only for the Eagles to go out and struggle. more questions than answers right now, and I tend to agree with him. The team lost Chris Long to retirement and Michael Bennett to trade. It remains to be seen if the secondary will be healthy and effective. Plus, with linebacker Jordan Hicks now gone, how will the linebackers stack up? John mentioned safety turned linebacker Nate Gerry as a key player to watch. Of course, all eyes will be on Carson Wentz. Since his rookie season, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy for another full season, and Nick Foles is in Jacksonville now. It’s imperative that #11 stays upright and Pederson has said he will closely monitor his snaps and play during the preseason to make sure he’s ready to go for the season opener. One more item on football, although I was tempted to put this in the entertainment part of the column. The Oakland Raiders are going to be the featured team on HBO’s “Hard Knocks”. With former ESPN analyst Jon Gruden there as coach and former TV analyst Mike Mayock as GM, I’m thinking that will be some “must-see” television. I know my DVR will be set! While I’m on sports and TV mixing, TNT announced last week that it will end the NBA “Players Only” broadcasts next season. Hooray…! I believe a broadcast should have at least one, true, play by play voice, and even though I liked some of the insight the

players were bringing, with no lead announcer, that’s like not having a conductor for the orchestra. A welcome change if you ask me. The Sixers announced they signed guard Trey Burke and are bringing back shooter Furkan Korkmaz. Count me in the camp that was hoping that Kyle Korver would return to Philadelphia and possibly end his NBA career where he began it. However, Korver signed with the Bucks to reunite with his old coach Mike Budenholzer in Milwaukee. Korkmaz is younger and t he Sixer s played it right by declining his option originally and still getting him back for a lesser salary. Finally, Atlantic City wins the 50th Dutch Hoffman Memorial Lifeguard Races thanks to a win in the singles row by Vince Granese. This is the first of the “Big Three” for area lifeguard racing. The Margate Memorials are this Friday night (Aug. 2nd) and the South Jersey Championships are in Longport on Friday August 9th. If you’ve never been out to the races, it’s really a fun (and FREE) thing to do. Entertainment now, as I’m sad to say goodbye to the women of Litchfield on “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix. I binge watched the seventh and final season and it had all the emotions I expected. Funny, sad, poignant, timely, topical and relevant. Most people have never been to prison, but in seven seasons, I feel like creator Jenji Kohan did an accurate job of portraying what it’s like for folks in there. The show was defi-

nitely a game-changer for episodic television and I’d recommend it to anyone 16 and older. ●● I’ll also be checking out “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” by Quentin Tarantino real soon in the theater. Somehow, Brad Pitt & Leonardo DiCaprio had never worked together before this, but Tarantino matches them up in his homage to 1960’s Los Angeles. The “Lion King” remake won the box office weekend, but at just over $40.4 million, “Once” rivals “inglorious Basterds” for Ta r a n t i n o’s best opening weekend ever. I can’t wait to see it. Remember, you can listen to me on the radio each Saturday on 97.3 ESPN from 8-10 a.m. It’s the “Pete Thompson Show”, and I’ve been calling it “Breakfast with the PT”, so I hope you’ll tune in and interact with me on the air.

Beach Boys Play their Timeless Hits in AC

written by Gary Simmens Photos by Donald B Kravitz

F

or five decades, The Beach Boys, America’s first pop band to reach the 50-year milestone, has recorded and performed the music that has become the world’s favorite soundtrack to summer. Founded in Hawthorne, California in 1961, The Beach Boys were originally comprised of the three teenaged Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, along with their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine. In 1962, neighbor David Marks joined

24

the group for their first wave of hits with Capitol Re cords, leaving in late 1963, and in 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing for the group.

The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, that same year. The album spent 37 weeks on the Billboard chart, launching the young group known for its shimmering vocal harmonies and relaxed California style into international stardom. The Wilson/Love collaboration resulted in many huge international chart hits, and under Brian Wilson’s musical leadership,

the band’s initial surfrock focus was soon broadened to include many other themes, helping make The Beach Boys America’s preeminent band of the 1960s. Impressively, The Beach Boys continue to hold Billboard/ Nielsen SoundScan’s record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and they are also the American group with the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits. Sounds Of Summer: The Very Best Of The Beach Boys has achieved triple-platinum sales status and The SMiLE Sessions, released to worldwide critical acclaim and has been heralded as 2011’s #1 Reissue of the Year by Rolling Stone magazine. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and recipients of The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award, The Beach Boys are a beloved American institution that remains iconic around the world.

The Beach Boys came on stage with 9 musicians. Aside from the main keyboard player and the bass player, everyone sang either harmony or lead vocals on at least some of the songs. The Hard Rock was packed and the Beach Boys did not disappoint, pounding out 33 songs in a 2 hour and 2 minute set. There were fans from 8-years-old to over 80-years-old in the crowd, singing along to hit after hit. Beach balls flew through the air, bouncing around in the summer crowd to the beat of the classics. The set started out with " Do it Again", "Safari," and “Catch a Wave.” It was non-stop upbeat vibes

for 7 songs, before the band took a pause to talk to the audience. Lead Singer Mike Love mentioned the band performed a beach concert on July 4,1983 in Atlantic City, which drew a record crowd. Love also has a solo album out now and mixed in two songs, including "Pisces" from it in the 33 song set list. They also did a tribute to former Beatle group member George Harrison, who Mike Love was good friends with. He vacationed in India with George and the Beatles years ago. Both Harrison and Love

The band also did a nice arrangement twist to the Beatles classic "Here Comes The Sun.” Then timeless hits kept coming from “California Girls,” “Sloop John B,” “Rhonda,” “Barbara Ann,” “Rock Roll,” “Summer Blues,” and “Vibes,” to their Number one smash hit "Kokomo." Next was “Rockaway,” and their last song was "Fun, Fun, Fun" as an encore.

Particularly strong vocals came all night long from member Brian Ei c h e n b e r ge r who joined the Beach Boys in 2015, after playing guitar and singing from 1996 to 2014 with the group the Four Freshman. His high range vocals were spot on all night and especially showcased in the acapella style song he did with 3 other band members. The crowd left happy, feeling they got their money's worth

Moving Forward with the Atlantic City Rail Line

By Senator Chris Brown

T

he Atlantic City Rail Line is a tremendous asset for our working families and local businesses, but we have yet to fully tap its potential. My goals are to increase service to Atlantic City during special events, improve the commuter schedule, and now use the train stations along the rail line as catalysts for redevelopment. I recently hosted a meeting between NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kevin Corbett and

local stakeholders about improving the rail line. Our local families and businesses are not making a pie in the sky wish by asking for better rail service. NJ TRANSIT’s own study showed an investment in the rail line will increase ridership, so it just makes sense for NJ TRANSIT to move forward with improving service. The point I stressed to NJ TRANSIT is investing in the Atlantic City City Rail Line makes sense because the success and growth of Atlantic City is an important issue for the State. Atlantic City casinos, for example, generate: $261 million for senior and disabled programs $4.9 million for the State Hotel/Motel Occupancy Tax $13.2 million in New Jersey Sales Tax $501 million in business for New Jersey vendors Further, according to the NJ Division of

Dean Randazzo, Realtor New Jersey’s most accomplished surfer, nicknamed the Jersey Devil, always knew he’d do great things! And Now that strong work ethic you've come to know and respect is ready to serve all your real estate needs here at the Jersey Shore!

Travel and Tourism, the hospitality industry in Atlantic County as a whole generates $817 million in State and local taxes and directly employs 30% of Atlantic County’s working families. During our meeting, we urged NJ TRANSIT to add more service for special events in Atlantic City, such as the air show, beach concerts, and conventions; to develop a more commuter

friendly schedule, and improve overall service on the ACRL. As a follow up to the meeting, I asked the stakeholders representing working families and local businesses to develop short, mid, and long term goals and priorities for the rail line. Two of the goals we discussed were creating transit villages and making sure projects

for ACRL were included in the five year capital plan that NJ TRANSIT is currently working on, which is why I am sponsoring the bi-partisan “New Jersey Transit Villages Act” to help us reach those goals by encouraging development around and ridership along the Atlantic City Rail Line. The bill, S-2483, would improve the existing NJ Transit Village program operated through the NJ Department of Transportation by ensuring priority consideration for municipalities applying for capital and grant funding from multiple State programs, providing expedited permit review, and making available up to $10 million in funding for transit villages. Under the existing program, only a few hundred thousand dollars are awarded each year. Currently, Pleasantville is the only Atlantic County municipality with a Transit Village designation. I was proud to help the city secure Transit Village grant funding from the state, because Pleasantville has been successful using this program to revitalize its downtown, providing an example of the benefits of having a Transit Village designation. My hope is our bill further encourages other towns to create Transit Villages. Absecon and Atlantic City have begun the process to apply for Transit Village designation. Absecon, for example, sees developing the area around its train station as a means of boosting commercial activity along the White Horse Pike. In our meeting with Mr. Corbett, Egg Harbor City and Hammonton were mentioned as potential candidates that may benefit from having a Transit Village designation.

The Murphy Administration wants to steer the State economic development funding toward transit villages, so there is an opportunity for Atlantic County towns to capture State investment dollars to help local families and businesses. Transit villages make accessing rail service convenient and efficient, so I can see a time when a family from Philadelphia can make a day of going to the beach in Atlantic City with a stop in Hammonton for breakfast and a stop in Egg Harbor City for dinner. Six million people living in the Philadelphia metro area have direct access to our beaches, boardwalk, and casinos through the Atlantic City Rail Line, but NJ TRANSIT needs to do a better job in making it easier and more efficient for them to get here. I believe by working together with NJ TRANSIT and area stakeholders, we can help the rail line reach its fullest potential in attracting more visitors while operating a convenient schedule for our working families who rely on the train to get to work and home every day.

Diet and Mental Health

By Nancy Adler

P

eople who are obese may be more likely to become depressed. And, according to several studies, people who are depressed are more likely to become obese. Researchers believe that may be the result of changes in your immune system and hormones that come with depression.

Fortunately, a nutritious diet including the foods above will help you get to and stay at a healthy weight. If you're having a hard time, talk with your doctor. Many people who are depressed also have problems with alcohol or drugs. Not only can they interfere with your mood, sleep, and motivation, they can also reduce the effectiveness of your depression medications. Drinks and foods with caffeine can trigger anxiety and make it difficult to sleep at night. Cutting back or stopping caffeine after noon each day may help you get a better night's sleep. Eating well (i.e. a well-balanced diet rich in vegetables and nutrients) may be associated with feelings of wellbeing. Individuals who ate more fruit and vegetables found that incorporating a diet high in vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, beans, cereals, grains, fish, and unsaturated fats such as olive oil and supplemented with fish oil led to a reduction in depression among many people . The importance of good nutritional intake at an early age is explored in multiple studies, I found that a poor diet (with high levels of saturated fat, refined carbohydrates and processed food products) is linked to poorer mental health in children and adolescents. However, there are a range of inequalities that can contribute to the development of mental health problems, and how these factors interact with each other to affect mental health can be complex. Factors such as poorer physical health, and living in poverty, or deprived communities, have been found to be associated with poorer mental health and wellbeing. Both these inequality factors have also been shown to have a complex relationship with poor nutrition. Poor nutrition can lead to physical health

problems such as obesity, though there are a number of demographic variables that could affect the direction and/or strength of the association with mental health including severity of obesity, level of education, gender, age and ethnicity The relationship between obesity and mental health problems is complex. Unfortunately, there's no specific diet that's been proven to relieve depression . Still, while certain eating plans or foods may not ease your symptoms or put you instantly in a better mood, I believe wholeheartedly that a healthy diet may help as part of your overall treatment. Our bodies normally make molecules called free radicals, but these can lead to cell damage, aging, and other problems. Studies show that your brain is particularly at risk. Although there's no way to stop free radicals completely, you can be able to lessen their destructive effect by eating foods rich in antioxidants, including: Beta-carotene: apricots, broccoli, cantaloupe, carrots, collards, peaches, pumpkin, spinach, sweet potato Vitamin C: blueberries, broccoli, grapefruit, kiwi, oranges, peppers, potatoes, strawberries, tomato Vitamin E: margarine, nuts and seeds, vegetable oils, wheat germ Foods like turkey, tuna, and chicken have an amino acid called tryptophan, which may help you make serotonin. Try to eat something with protein several times a day, especially when you need to clear your mind and boost your energy. Good sources of healthy proteins include beans and peas, lean beef, low-fat cheese, fish, milk, poultry, soy products, and yogurt. Vitamin D receptors are located through-

out the body, including your brain . What I have seen is the likelihood of having depression is higher in people with low levels of Vitamin D In another study, noticing that people who had symptoms of depression, particularly those with seasonal affective disorder tended to get better when the amount of vitamin D in their bodies went up as you'd expect it to during the spring and summer. Ask your Doctor for a script to have blood work done to confirm Vitamin D levels . Seems Researchers don't know how much vitamin D is ideal, although too much can cause problems with calcium levels and how well your kidneys work. People in general don't eat enough omega-3s may have higher rates of major depressive disorder. The people who don't often eat fish, a rich source of these fatty acids, are more likely to have depression. As a double benefit, Omega-3s are good for your heart . My recommendation for good sources of omega-3s, including alpha-linolenic acid, are: • Fatty fish (anchovy, mackerel, salmon, sardines, shad, and tuna) • Flaxseed • Canola and soybean oils • Nuts, especially walnuts • Dark green, leafy vegetables Nancy Adler is a certified nutritionist and practitioner in Linwood. Best Of Broadway at Resorts By Holly Fertsch

T

he Sharpe Singers have been performing their Best of Broadway show at the Resorts this past month. The show consists of a series of Broadway hits performed by the Sharpe family and family friends. Unfortunately, they will be moving on from Atlantic City after their performance on July 31. At the close of their run at Resorts, however, it feels appropriate to review their Best of

Broadway show. In short: spectacular. The quality of singing was phenomenal, which was to be expected from Broadway veterans Barbra Russell-Sharpe and her husband Ron Sharpe. The two played Cosette and

Marius, respectively, in Broadway’s Les Misérables. They are fond of recounting how after marrying each other on stage night after night, they tied the knot for real. Ron Sharpe is also the only actor to play both male leads in Les Miserables, Marius and Jean Valjean. Ron and Barbra have also produced the Broadways productions “A Catered Affair” and “A Tale of Two Cities.” I was however, shocked that their children seemed just as talented as their prodigious parents. The Sharpe Singers is a family act, with the couple’s four children and several friends of the family participating in the production. I admit to being slightly cynical, so I did not expect the Sharpe’s children to be that good. I was happy to be proved wrong. Their daughter, Samantha Sharpe, seemed to me to be particularly talented at showing emotion as she sang. The Sharpe’s son, Logan Sharpe, further tugged on heartstrings with his performance of “You Will Be Found” from the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen, a more modern production. I was happily surprised this song was included, making

the performance even more powerful for me. It was clear that the show had been designed for everyone to be able to enjoy it, whether you’re a Broadway buff or not. The show began with songs from a variety of Broadway musicals ranging from Little Shop of Horrors to West Side Story. Then there was a medley of several Disney songs, made all the more cute by the Sharpe’s identical twin sons, Connor and Aidan. Shortly afterwards, there was a segment called “Broadway rock,” a medley of rock classics such as “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Stayin’ Alive” and “Thriller.” There was even a song from Shrek the Musical, which I found hilarious. Audience engagement was prioritized, with singer Jim Petro descending from the stage to dance through the seats and sing with selected audience members. The family-friendly performance was packed with humor, ranging from puns and dad jokes to whole songs dedicated to comedic relief. One running joke involved the Sharpe family pretending to regard the family friends performing with them as

mere servants. Performers Jim Petro, Andre Williams, and Matthew Ciuffitelli joked about being made to “sleep under the boardwalk” while the Sharpe family stayed at Resorts. The three men performed the song "Agony" from Into the Woods, while PowerPoint slides of the trio waiting on the family played in the background. One critique I initially had of the Sharpe’s Best of Broadway show was their use of PowerPoint slides during their songs. But the comedic effect of such ridiculous pictures playing in the background of such a dramatic song won me over. The last portion of the show was stunningly spectacular. Ron and Barbra performed songs from The Phantom of the Opera that gave me chills. The lighting in the Resorts Super Star Theatre mimicked stars strewn in the night sky as Ron Sharpe performed “The Music of the Night.” The show then closed with a rendition of “One Day More” from Les Misérables. The night could not have ended on a stronger note. If you ever have opportunity to see the Sharpe Singers, I strongly encourage you to do so.

A Look at Upper Township, NJ- Real Estate Update

By Gary Simmens

U

pper Township is a large township in Cape May County, New Jersey. It is part of the Ocean City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Upper Twp. is known for its Strathmere beaches and easy access to Ocean City beaches It also is a reasonable property tax base for NJ seashore investing. Upper Township is home to the only yellow fire trucks in Cape May County, a tradition started in 1985 when the Seaville Fire Rescue Company purchased a new vehicle and thought that federal regulations would require the color. Since being formed in 1964, the Seaville Fire Rescue Company has served the area, responding to over 200 calls a year from its fire station is located on Route 50 across from Dino's Seaville Diner. The Upper Township School District serves students pre-K through eighth grade. As of the 2014-15 school year, the three schools in the district are Upper Township Primary School

(grades Pre-K to 4th), Upper Township Elementary School (3-5th grades) and Upper Township Middle School (6-8th grades). Students from nearby Corbin City, a non-operating school district, attend the Upper Township schools as part of a sending/receiving relationship. Public school students in ninth through twelfth grades from Upper Township attend Ocean City High School in Ocean City. The median real estate sales price has increased from 2017 to 2018 to $283,500 an 8% increase. Days on the market decreased 8.5% for faster sales. In 2018, the most expensive sale was $1,145,000 for a brand new custom construction 3-story in the Whale Beach Section of Strathmere. So far in 2019, the most expensive sale was for a $1,125,000 water view new construction 3-story in the Strathmere area of Upper, boosting 3500 square feet. On the mainland part of Upper Twp., the most expensive home to settle recently was for $629,000, which was a nice 4 BR with 3326 sq. ft. and in-ground pool and finished basement built originally in 2004. With the interest rates at all time lows, it's a great time to be investing in real estate in Upper Township and throughout the South Jersey Shore area. The Hurley Line:

Former Special Council Robert Mueller Congressional Testimony was a Spectacular Disaster for Partisan Democrats

By HARRY HURLEY Political Columnist

F

or two years we were told to wait for Robert Mueller to speak. That there was no one who knew more about President Trump and the many allegations of Russia conspiracy/collusion and obstruction of justice then he did. Then, on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, Mueller spoke and didn't even appear to know where he was and looked as if he was introduced to his own lengthy report for the very first time. Make no mistake about it, Mueller accomplished much on this fateful day. He demonstrated to the American people that he was not in charge of his own investigation. It was in his name only. The rabid, Trump-hating, Obama-Clinton loving Democrat attorneys, who Mueller

appointed ran the whole, dirty show. All doubt has now been removed. It is was a most powerful display, that boomeranged right into the faces of the partisan Democrats. Previously, the confidential, long-awaited Mueller Report was released to the public in an unprecedented fashion by United States Attorney General William Barr. The final result was in. No conspiracy/collusion with Russia and no obstruction of justice. "The Mueller Report, The Final Report of the Special Counsel into Donald Trump, Russia, and Collusion" was even turned into a book, with a Forward by Alan Dershowitz. It became a New York Times Bestseller. The American people were billed more than $ 40 million for this hoax. The radical Democrats were not satisfied when President Trump was fully vindicated. They said we had to hear directly from Robert Mueller, III, who did not want to testify publicly and said so. Now we know why. Mueller's appearances before The United States House of Representatives Judiciary and Intelligence Committees were a disaster for the partisan Democrats.

They will never accept that President Trump is even their President. The Democrats are now breathing in and out of paper bags to stop from hyperventilating. They refuse to accept defeat. Former Barack Obama senior political adviser called Mueller's testimony a "disaster," saying that Mueller does not appear as sharp" as he was six years ago "This is delicate to say, but Mueller, whom I deeply respect, has not publicly testified before Congress in at least six years. And, he does not appear as sharp as he was then." Axelrod said this publicly on CNN and tweeted it to his 1.1 million followers. Anti-Trump Harvard University lawyer Lawrence Tribe also called Mueller's testimony a "disaster," that set back impeachment prospects. "Much as I hate to say it," said Tribe. (Note, that he hates having to admit the truth). "This morning's hearing was a disaster. Far from breathing life into his damning report, the tired Robert Mueller sucked the life out of it." Tribe has taught at Harvard for more than 50 years. He is so radical that he recently compared President Trump to Adolph Hitler. Remember, Trump Derangement Syndrome is real and Tribe's got a very bad case of it. Tribe also once said about President Trump, "If you're going to shoot him, you have to shoot to kill," said Tribe. Tribe felt perfectly comfortable saying these hateful words to another "Never Trumper," CNN's Chris Cuomo. He knew he'd be protected by the media. I strongly believe in our Constitutionally-provided rights regarding freedom of speech, but, Tribe's words should have been considered a crime and threat against the President. Of course, Tribe is

Please don't take my word for it. Here are the exact words of prominent Democrats immediately following Mueller's unsteady testimony as follows: NBC New Political Director Chuck Todd: "Mueller hearing an optics disaster and the special counsel didn't advance the cause for Trump impeachment." Savanah Guthrie led a NBC panel discussion and said, "When the Democrats were asked why. Why would they put Robert Mueller on the witness stand, why did he come before Congress when he's issued this report, they said, because you needed to have this report come alive, because the movie will be better than the book, that it would captivate America's attention and focus them on the issues here. And to our panel, I ask the question, is it mission accomplished?" CHUCK TODD, NBC NEWS: "If that was the goal, it's a complete failure on that front." Democrats experienced anxiety attacks over Mueller's testimony. They can't believe or won't accept how bad it went. It was if ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, The Washington Post, New York Times and more were rhetorically curled up in a fetal position, nearly passed-out on the floor trying to remain conscious as Mueller's testimony continued for five torturous hours. United States Congressman Ted Lieu, D-33 California has gone so far as to say that "someone got to Mueller." They simply will not accept that there was no "there," there in the first place. You can't find what's not there. However, Lieu represents the beautiful people of of Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the Beach Cities.

still a Professor at Harvard and there was absolutely no consequence for his dangerous rhetoric. The Socialist Democrats can say and do anything with impunity in during The Age of Trump. Tribe has often been referred to (by the Democrat media) as "The 10th United States Supreme Court Justice." This is a label (to falsely elevate him) that I find to be repugnant and completely undeserved. The media has hopelessly wished for decades that Tribe be given a seat on our coveted Supreme Court. Since they know that it will never happen, they invented an "honorary" place for him to serve on the court. I don't have to quote even one Republican as to how bad the Mueller appearance on Capitol Hill went. I predicted in advance on-air and in this space that the Democrats would regret ever calling Mueller to testify publicly before their Committees. It's too late now, but, what they should have done was to have Mueller appear in closed session and then leak the transcripts to the American people. In Mueller's current "state," he would have agreed to every false allegation that the Democrats would make. However, when you suffer from "Trump Derangement Syndrome," there is no objectivity or clarity of mind. They were convinced that the "movie" would play better than the written word. They calculated wrong. Do not expect them to retreat or surrender. They won't. Our radical Democrat Socialists will slog on and make no mistake, it will be at their own election peril. The American people have turned the page on this entire false narrative. President Trump has proven that a sleazy Democrat-led "Witch Hunt" was the case from the beginning. Now, get ready. The pendulum is about to wing the other way. Democrats are going to be on defense. United States Inspector General Michael Horowitz'

long-awaited report will be released (most likely) sometime in September. For the first time, the American people will learn about the improper conduct of James Comey, Peter Strzok and many other Trump haters; who took their deep visceral hatred of President Trump into their public positions of trust. The Horowitz Report will only be the beginning. The absolute truth about what really happened will become self-evident upon the completion and release of a special report that is currently being conducted by United States Attorney John Durham. All will be known by the public long before the American people vote on Tuesday, November 3, 2020. Harry Hurley is the president of Harry Hurley Consulting and Communications, LLC. It is a casual and fun event that always provides great barbeque fare, music, and plenty of great door prizes along with a Chinese Auction. All proceeds go to Adelaide’s Place Day Center for Women. Named after Marie Adelaide de Cice, co-founder of the Daughter’s of the Heart of Mary, Adelaide’s Place is for homeless women who have nowhere else to go to during the day. It is run by the amazing Sister Patty and a group of volun-

teers who are always there to help the women in whatever they might need during the day whether it be a snack, a washing machine, toiletries, or just a safe space to socialize with other women going thru a similar situation. “Some women come every day, while some only come once or twice a week” explained Sister Patty, “all of the women here have formed a bond.” The women of Adelaide’s Place come to escape from their current situations whatever it may be. Some women have just fallen on hard times while other situations, for example, might be that they went thru a divorce and got nothing from it. There are even some women here with Master’s Degrees and have still found themselves in this situation. Adelaide’s Place is there not only to provide an escape from these women’s current situations, but to help them in rebuilding their lives by getting them in contact with family services, social workers, linkages to health care, temporary or permanent housing agencies, and much

The Light by Raymond Tyler

Join In The 8th Annual Kentucky Avenue Festival

This Saturday August 10th, 12pm to 8pm. Kentucky and Arctic Avenues in Atlantic City

By Raymond Tyler

I

f we could “turn back the clock and revisit Atlantic City during the 50’s, 60’s or 70’s? One of the most exciting strips of real estate on the entire east coast would be Kentucky Avenue in Atlantic City. For 5 decades or more there was a wide variety of minority owned businesses that stretched from the boardwalk into the neighborhoods. Kentucky Avenue boasted great legacy/family run restaurants , juke joints and bars, and show places where one could see world renowned talent. The crown jewel for many decades was “The World Famous Club Harlem. The Club Harlem produced a Sunday breakfast show at or about sunrise that would open with local talent and

would have an amazing headliner such as Sammy Davis Jr. The breakfast show was so popular that often celebrities that had played other venues on Saturday night like Frank Sinatra, would stop in The Club Harlem for the breakfast show on Sunday morning. No matter the timing of the show coming to town, one would often see people standing in line down the block waiting to gain entrance to The Club Harlem. When The Club Harlem was torn down circa early 1990’s ...the last of the magic of Kentucky Avenue went with it. For the past 8 years however, Steve Young of The Polaris Development Group LLC, has brought the magic back to “KY and The Curb. The kentucky Ave Festival is a whole movement that is dedicated to rebuilding opportunities for business and entertainment on Kentucky Avenue. This year promises to be the biggest celebration ever with two headlining acts that actually appeared to sell out audiences at The Club Harlem. At approximately 3pm , hip hop legend Doug E. Fresh will take the stage. Doug Fresh

has mastered entertaining crowds of people through his rap songs, dance skills, and the ability to make a host of percussive sounds with no more than his voice and a microphone. Over the years he has repeatedly topped the hip hop and soul music charts. Closing the show will be Jean Carne a R&B legend with hits like Don’t Let It Go To Your Head. Also performing will be a range of talent that includes dance, African Drums, poetry, hip hop and more. Performers like Boss Man, Nettie Long, Tashie and Shawn Rock will take the stage. One highlight will be Angela Burton who’s newest CD Passion & Pain is being played on radio stations everywhere. Burton has the distinction of having performed at The Club Harlem decades ago and still opening for major artists and headlining shows today at Kelsey’s on Kentucky Avenue. This free event takes place Saturday, August 10th, rain or shine. For more information, performance and vending opportunities please call Steve Young at 609-829-8706

Egg Harbor Township allowed their bars to remain open 24-hours a day, and some of them did, especially those near Somers Point, where the bars were forced to stop serving at 2am and close by 3am. Brownies Lodge, a rustic log cabin in Bargaintown was probably the rst to become popular with the post-Somers Point crowd, and many old timers recall driving out there to continue the party after Somers Point had closed. The owners of Bay Shores of Somers Point built the most notorious of the late night clubs – The Dunes. It was located on the bay on Longport Blvd. where the roads from Somers Point and Ocean City came together. The Dunes was later renovated into a sports bar by the Suttor family from Margate, who also owned, at one time – the Sailsh Café and Roberts in Margate, the Point Pub and the Owl Tree in Northeld. When I got out of the military in 1957, I was officiating sports events in Atlantic County—football, baseball, basketball," Hart recalled. "Just after a basketball game at Atlantic City High, I was in the Athletic Director’s office and a broadcaster named Ralph Glenn said, ‘Gee, I got a problem. I have to go up and do a game alone in Trenton on Tuesday.’ So I said, ‘I’ll go along." That chance encounter turned him into a regular in the three-man South Jersey broadcast team of Hart, Glenn, and Al Owen. Like an actor waiting for his big break, Hart kept his day job, which included teaching in the New Jersey public school system, selling cars, operating a radio station, and working as the assistant public relations director and announcer for Aquarama in South Philadelphia. When Philadelphia landed an NHL franchise, Hart submitted some audition tapes. Short on cash, the Flyers couldn’t afford to bring in an experienced Canadian announcer as some of the new teams did. They needed someone whose job was flexible enough to allow him to announce Flyers games on the side. Although he only expected to be on the staff for a few years until the Flyers could afford a better broadcaster, Hart stayed on as the voice of the Philadelphia Flyers for 29 years. until the end of the 1994–1995 season. Known for a rapid-fire delivery, his high-pitched voice was perfect for both radio and early generation sports television. Hart announced more than 2,000 NHL games, 6 separate Stanley Cups,

5 NHL all-star games, and the NHL Soviet Union all-star series. His most famous call came when he announced the end of Game 6 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Finals: “Ladies and Gentlemen, the Flyers are going to win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers win the Stanley Cup! The Flyers have won the Stanley Cup!” Gene Hart's call triggered the biggest celebration in Philadelphia sports history. More than 2 million attended the parade celebrating the Flyers' win.

Senior Moments

The Road to Retirement Heads West

by Charles P. Eberson

G

PS=Great Persistence Succeeds The first leg of our cross-country trip was from our home in Ventnor to family in Indiana. My wife was intent on making the trip straight through, a roughly 14 hour jaunt. She reluctantly agreed to break the drive into two days. We left at 4:30 a.m. in order to get through the Philadelphia traffic without a catastrophic mishap. Four hours into the trip I pulled the GPS up on the navigation screen, a decision I soon began to regret. It showed that we would reach our destination in about eight hours. Since it was only 8 a.m., my wife said, “we can do this.” By a little after 4 p.m. we pulled into her family’s driveway a little shy of twelve hours on the road. They couldn’t believe what good time we made. I

couldn’t believe how my eyes burned and how someone swinging a 2x4 across the back of my neck wouldn’t elicit even as much of a wince out of me. After a few days of rest and rehabilitation, we set off for our next stop on the way out west; Governor Thompson State Park in Wisconsin. According to our trustworthy GPS, the trip would take about seven and a half hours; a long day but doable. Chicago had other plans for us. Our route which skirted the Windy City was fraught with traffic jams, accidents and more tractor trailers than I have ever seen. Inexplicably, the arrival time as designated on our GPS kept moving later and later. Something you don’t want to see on an already long drive. As my wife and I do under such circumstances, we accept the inevitable, hunker down, gas up and pull into a rest stop for some baked goods. As it happens, Wisconsin is the home of O & H Danish Bakery in Racine famous for its “kringle” an obscenely tasty concoction of

down, finally finished setting it up, struggled with the tent’s rain fly and sat in the van until the rain subsided. Bedtime came early. Mercifully sleep followed soon after. We awoke to a crisp, dry morning. I set up a campfire and my wife fired up the camping stove and started the coffee. As I am writing this column, I am sitting by the campfire with a hot cup of coffee, a chunk of kringle and surrounded by 30 foot tall birch trees and wild raspberry bushes. What have we learned so far? Never, ever take a route that comes even close to Chicago again. Our next stop is the Apostle Islands on the shore of Lake Superior still in Wisconsin. The GPS estimates the travel time to be four and half hours. Sure. seven layer puff pastry with an array of fillings from which to choose and this rest stop offered up the bakery’s bounty. Our selection was cherry cheese. Armed with our delicacy we again hit the road. After nine and half hours we arrived at our campground and began setting up our tent. We were almost finished when, of course it started to rain. Again, we hunkered

Red Wine Spritzer

eave white wine on the shelf this summer and try a refreshing red wine spritzer, made with homemade sour mix for a change of pace. Yields: 2 drinks Prep time: 10 minutes Cook time: 5 minutes Total time: 15 minutes Ingredients: • Homemade Sour Mix • 1/4 cup (1 3/4 ounces; 50 grams) granulated sugar • 1/4 cup water • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 1-2 lemons) • 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (from about 2 limes) Cocktail 1/2 cup homemade sour mix • 1 cup sparkling water • 1/2 cup red wine •

Instructions Make the sour mix: Stir the sugar and water together in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally until the sugar has completely dissolved and the syrup is clear. Pour into a heat-safe jar, like a Mason jar, and cool to room temperature. Stir in the lemon and lime juices. Assemble the red wine spritzers: Fill a Collins glass or other tall glass (like a juice glass!) with a handful of ice cubes.

Gently stir 1/4 cup sour mix and 1/3-1/2 cup sparkling water into each glass. Top each with 1/4 cup red wine; if you pour gently, the wine will float on top of the soda, slowly bleeding into the cocktail as the ice melts. Stick a straw and/or a cocktail stirrer in each glass and serve immediately. You and your fellow drinkers can choose to mix the wine into the rest of the cocktail or let it slowly meld together on its own.

The Science Behind Jellyfish By Steffen Klenk

T

ake a moment to picture your perfect beach day. The sun is out, you’re working on your tan and there’s sand between your toes. You decide to go for a swim in the ocean, until you notice an object lurking in the distance. Coming into close encounter with a jellyfish may feel eerie, but there is nothing worse than being stung by one. The feeling of getting stung could ruin anyone’s day. Jellyfish prefer living near the surface of the ocean and thrive in warm temperatures. They typically begin to appear along the beaches around mid-August and mid-September. Why does a jellyfish sting hurt so much? The answer hides in their tentacles. Jellyfish have a special cell that run along their tentacles known as cnidocytes. The cnidae in their tentacles produce venom that

protects them from predators and subdue them. The most common jellyfish you are likely to find wash up along our coastline is the moon jelly. They live up to a year in captivity and feed off of mollusks and plankton. Also known as Aurelia aurita, the moon jelly is known for its pink crescent-shaped underbelly. Box jellyfish may be considered our

worst enemy of the bunch. They have tentacles up to nine feet in length and can produce a painful, venomous sting to any of its prey. A new threat has been lurking within the waters of Barnegat Bay. Boaters and swimmers have been keeping a watchful eye for clinging jellyfish. The Gonionemus vertens is about the size of a quarter and has up to 90 tentacles that can produce a sharp sting. They have been spotted just off of ocean waters between New Jersey and Massachusetts and up and down the West Coast from California to Alaska. The Portugese man o’ war jellyfish, or bluebottles might be fascinating to

look at, with its colorful purple-blue appearance, but think twice before approaching one up close. The men o’ wars have thousands of small cells that can pack a painful, sometimes venomous sting. While their tentacles have an average length as 30 feet, they can extend up to 165 feet. They are mainly found in tropical and subtropical waters and like to travel in colonies. Beachgoers have been spotting the Portuguese man o’war up and down the Eastern seaboard. In recent weeks, residents in Wildwood discovered the brightly-colored stinger while walking the beach. If you should find a man o’war while swimming or walking the beach, do not touch it. Leave it just as you found it and warn the local beach patrol. Most jellyfish stings can be cured using affective treatment. In the event that you get stung by a jellyfish, medical experts advise rinsing the affected sting with vinegar water for at least 30 seconds. Then, using a pair of tweezers, remove the tentacle and soak the affected area in hot water for 20 minutes. Do not apply alcohol to the site or the sting. If you get stung by a box jellyfish or end up with a severe reaction, call 911 to seek urgent medical help. These important tips will help to keep you and your family safe.

First of all, you can't go wrong with Morton's menu, "best known for its USDA prime-aged beef, fresh fish & seafood, and hand-picked produce." If you book your next event at Morton's you will surely be pleased with the way Linda Bruckler seamlessly organizes your event, paying attention to your requests even incorporating a theme to honor someone special.
