Midsummer Reflections Letter from the editor

I

f your like me, and consider summer to be Memorial Day to Labor Day, we are right at the halfway point. What have you done so far? What is on your summer bucket list or must do list? The weeks seem to fly by faster in the summer than any other time during the year. We get 12 weeks to soak up the sun, sand, and surf. There are so many celebrations and entertainment opportunities! We want our kids, spouses and significant others to have the perfect summer experience, our homes to look beautiful and our businesses to flourish. The only problem is that even with the longer days, there are still not enough hours in the day. This is the point in the summer that I begin to panic. The retail industry only fuels my anxiety. I decided to go shopping for a new bathing suit last week. Apparently that ship has sailed. There were

approximately three bathing suits left in the store, all on clearance. Instead, Back to School items were plentiful and showcased everywhere. My heart sunk, did I miss s o m e t h i n g? Is it really the end of summer already? No, no, it is not. I still have time to make special memories or do something really memorable, like yoga on a paddleboard. Summer may be half way through, but that means it is far from over. For me, it starts with making a plan. Every family is different. Decide what experiences are most important to you and your family. I'm not much of a list person, but even if you simply create a mental list of some

things that would make your summer a stand out. One friend of mine, with a large family, decided Thursdays would be family dinner on the beach night. Sometimes it was take out and sometimes it was leftovers, but the best part was what followed once they all got on the beach together: whiffle ball games, kite flying, sand sculptures and more! She ended up creating a photo book, over f lowing with special moments captured on those Thursday evenings. Last weeks beach dinner they each dressed in all white and had a photographer come and take family photos that will then used for holiday cards and a portrait to hang over their mantle.

I know what your thinking, because I'm thinking it too. In my family, a big fight would erupt and ketchup would end up on the white clothes. Well, i honestly believe the value is in the trying. So many times my daughters will say to me "Remember when we did this or that.." It could have had what I considered a disastrous outcome, yet they will either think it was funny or "so us." When I went paddleboarding with my daughter, her favorite part was always when I fell in! We tend to put so much pressure on ourselves to make it perfect or at least seem perfect. But the truth is perfect is an illusion and we are all really just doing the best we can with what we got. Many of the best parts of summer are still to come. Sunflowers come into full bloom and are glorious in August. And because Labor Day is looming ahead, each day becomes a little more precious. Enjoy them, soak them up and remember we are only midsummer with lots of spectacular days ahead.

Peace & Love, Cindy

An Operator, Along for the Ride By Sarah Fertsch

J

oyous vacationers line the beach and boardwalk, marking the beginning of summer. Seagulls cackle, the sun shines, and sand sticks to the wet bare feet of locals and tourists alike. As a local from Egg Harbor Township, I spent most summers in high school working as a ride operator on the Ocean City boardwalk. The poignant smell of freshly-fried funnel cake and a child’s laughter whip me back in time. Donning a polo and khakis, I’m ready to start my shift. High schoolers, pimpled, hairy, and tan, wait impatiently for their workday to begin. Everyone is assigned a ride to supervise for the next six hours. “One word determines the fate your entire day,” my twin sister Holly whispers to me as we approach our manager. He broods over the flock of teenagers dangling the destiny of our day by his fingertips. “You two will be breakers today,” he mumbles under his breath. After three years of working at the pier with my twin sister, the manager still can’t tell us apart. We huff a sigh of relief. Breakers mean that we aren’t assigned one ride all day, but instead bounce ride to ride,

&

giving the other operators a lunch break. Once all the teens are assigned a ride and the park opens, the breakers gather to pick and choose which pieces of machinery they want to work for 30 minutes. “Top of flume?” asks Mr. Manager. It’s suddenly an auction and top-offlume is the prized pig. Fighting, bargaining, and then begging are quick to follow. “Kiddie Boats?” Mr. Manager asks. Dead Silence. These seasoned employees know that Kiddie Boats means soaking wet crying toddlers, parents complaining and older siblings who are too big to take a trip down memory lane. Kiddie Boats doubles as the main attraction of the park and the horror of the employees. Holly chirps up. She loves kids and has worked that ride for years. Surely this half hour helping children couldn’t be that painful. I review my list of mediocre rides to visit and start my day on the Frog Hopper ride. When I push through the flimsy iron gate, there are five kids flying on frog-

shaped pods. The employee assigned to that ride relaxes when she sees me, and hustles to wrangle the kids so she can take her break. In less than a minute I’m alone - the safety of these shoobies rests in my hands. Operating a ride is monotonous. I stand in front of what seems like a car engine front the 1950s with chipped green paint and a mess of wires sticking out the side. I check to see if the seatbelts are buckled, press the big red button, and wait for the day to end. The frogs leap in circles and toddlers squeal. Moms take pictures and gush over their brave boys and girls. Dads man the stroller. Grandma holds the cotton candy and kettle corn. Deep in a trance, I’m awakened by a mother’s scream. The ride has ended, but the frog pods are still six feet off the ground. Toddlers look confused and parents crinkle their eyebrows. There’s no button to call the mechanic. I look over at Holly working the kiddie boat ride across the park. She is soaking wet, mascara running, carrying a sobbing three-year-old off the ride. “Happy Birthday” plays over the loudspeaker in the distance.

I focus back on my own ride and try to get creative. Standing on my tiptoes, I reach as high as I can. “Unbuckle your seatbelt, sweetie!” I coo. “Let’s go see Mommy.” “I have to go potty,” the boy answers. I stretch my arms out, but he hesitates. His mother is threatening to call the paramedics. I gently grab his hand and he falls. My heart is racing when I catch him. The boy giggles as I set his feet on the ground because he knows my hands are now covered in urine. The mechanics finally arrive and free the other children. The families get free ride passes and I wash my hands. Just like that, the ride operator is back from her break and moving on to the next ride. I make my rounds on the rest of the rides. I sit and spin inside the Graviton Spaceship, dance with a 10-year-old girl on the Music Express, and yell “choo choo” on the monorail train ride. With a motor oil stain on my khakis and sweat on my brow, I finish my work day and meet my sister. The sun is setting, the lifeguards pull their rowboats to the dunes, and tidal salty-air smells poignant. Untucking our shirts, Holly and I reenact our days. We find ourselves throwing our hands, snorting with laughter, and head up to the boardwalk for smoothies and gyros for dinner. The perfect end to an imperfect day. Four years later, I’m almost finished with college and I intern for the state Senate. I spend long summer days sitting in a Harrisburg office answering phones. It’s a different world, but I know I wouldn’t be here without my Ocean City rite of passage working as a ride operator on the boardwalk.

Atlantic County Economic Alliance Awarded $750,000 USEDA i6 Challenge Grant to Accelerate Smart Airport Technologies

T

he Atlantic County Economic Alliance, (ACEA) was awarded a USEDA i6 Challenge grant, according to County Executive Dennis Levinson. The grant will provide $750,000 in federal funds and will be matched with $933,673 in local funding and in-kind commitments. The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) will serve as ACEA’s lead partner under the grant. NIA collaborates with NASA and other government agencies to conduct leading-edge research and technology development in space exploration, aeronautics, and science. Under the grant, partner organizations will create a Smart Airport and Aviation Partnership (SAAP) in southern New Jersey. The SAAP will attract new businesses into an economic cluster that is ideally matched to the region’s strengths and capabilities. Other partners include Atlantic County government, Cape May County government, the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), the National Aviation Research and Technolo-

gy Park (NARTP), the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, and Rowan University, Atlantic Cape Community College, the South Jersey Transportation Authority, and aviation- related businesses. Levinson stated that the investment Atlantic County has made in developing the NARTP and an Aviation Innovation Hub comprised

of the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center and the Atlantic City International Airport, is achieving the intended benefits. “Our efforts are being recognized and validated by both industry and academia,” Levinson said. “This was a highly competitive application process. Over 183 i6 Challenge applications were submitted and only 26 were awarded funding. Other recipients included

Johns Hopkins University, Cornell University, Purdue University, and the Mayo Clinic. We are proud to be ranked among such prestigious institutions.” According to Lauren Moore, Executive Director of the ACEA, “Our success is a testament to the strength of our partnerships. We will now be able to develop and service small business incubators and accelerators that should attract startup companies. We believe that within three years, the cluster will be sustainable and we will have created a critical mass of new and existing companies. The resources from this grant will be leveraged by the SAAP to ultimately generate $10-20 million in investment.” “We are very excited to be leading the Smart Airport and Aviation Partnership for ACEA. We look forward to working with our regional government, industry and academic partners, as well as the Federal Aviation Administration, to establish a thriving Smart Airport and Aviation cluster in Southern New Jersey,” said Dr. Douglas Stanley, President NIA.

Cold Treats to Get Through the Heat

By Marci Lutsky

W

hile the worst of the most recent heat wave may be behind us, we are in no way out of the woods yet in regards to high temperatures. One of my summer goals is to turn my oven on as little as possible. In the cold weather I crave all things hot and filling while in the summer, I crave all things cold and light. Here are some ideas to help you get through the summer heat with minimal cooking. Popsicles, popsicles and more popsicles! My freezer is always filled with popsicles all summer long. My kids love anything in popsicle form. I picked up a huge watermelon last week at a roadside stand for $4. We ate half of it and

JULY 25, 2019

the other half I added to the blender along with a splash of water and honey. I blended that until smooth and poured it into popsicle molds. Adding fruit to vanilla yogurt in the blender is great too and you could pour some granola into the popsicle molds first to add some texture to your pops. Breakfast is served! Here is what I’m not doing on summer mornings, cooking anything hot. Maybe I’ll toast something in the toaster, but that’s it! A great breakfast option when it’s over 80 degrees before 7am is a smoothie bowl. Keep frozen fruit in your freezer. You can either buy it already frozen or freeze fruit like bananas, pineapple and mango. Mix the frozen fruit in a blender with yogurt, top with granola and give it a drizzle of honey. Next time you find yourself at a smoothie place like Bungalow Bowls or Goji, take a picture of the menu so you can get inspiration for your at-home creations. I also recommend picking up Nicole Gaffney’s new cookbook, The Art of the Smoothie Bowl. If you aren’t growing basil this summer, head to the closest garden store and pick up some. Then you can make one of my favorite lunches, caprese salad. Slice some juicy Jersey tomatoes and fresh mozzarella, top with chopped basil and driz-

zle with olive oil. If you want to add a little more substance to this salad, you could chop everything and toss with pasta that has been cooked and cooled. I am lucky to have a friend who catches fresh tuna every few weeks during the summer and shares it with me. One of my favorite ways to enjoy fresh tuna is by making a poke bowl. Chop the sushi-grade tuna into small chunks and toss it with soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, scallions and avocado. Delish! You don’t need to turn your oven on to enjoy refreshing and satisfying food all summer long. From popsicles to smoothie bowls, hopefully you have some new ideas to eat healthy when the temperatures are too high to cook. Stay cool this summer with these cold treats! cean City, NJ – Life is Good – that’s what Chip Miller would always say. For a pair of recent fund-raising events hosted by the late National Corvette Hall of Famer’s namesake foundation, not only was it good, it was great! On Friday, July 19, the Chip Miller Amyloidosis Foundation welcomed hundreds of surfers and dozens more families for its 16th Annual Surf Fest and 4thannual Slide for Amyloid & Taste of OC. RESTAUARANT & CLAM BAR festivities topped last year’s event. Earned money was well over $30,000 and surpassed last year’s totals, while sixteen restaurants and eateries in OC donated some of the best food anyone could want as part of the evening. My father, Chip Miller was looking down on us this beautiful beach day,” noted CMAF president Lance Miller. “We haven’t had waves all summer and everyone couldn’t believe their eyes once they peered towards the ocean and saw some incredible surf pouring in for the contestants to enjoy. We couldn’t have asked for better surf and weather,” continued Miller. Miller also noted that the weather (and his wife) played a key role in the Taste of OC/ Slide for Amyloid event too. “The weather couldn’t have been better for an evening at the OC Waterpark. My wife, Michele, really took the helm this year and worked diligently on getting local eateries behind the Taste of OC. I was simply stunned at the transformation she

and her friends did to make the waterpark an elegant yet laid back setup. The food was out of this world! The outpouring of rave reviews were constant all evening long, people really loved the food. We couldn’t have done it without the amazing OC community.” These two events are just two of many on the summer schedule for the CMAF. The next event happens Saturday, July 27 at the OCNJ Skate Park as part of the 3rd Annual Skate Fest. Following Skate Fest, the CMAF turns its attention to Carlisle Pennsylvania for Corvettes at Carlisle, the annual CMAF dinner and Corvette raffle giveaway hosted by the Lancaster County Corvette Club. As with all events, prices and participation vary, but complete details on the 2019 season can be found online at www.ChipMiller.org or via the CMAF Facebook page, www.facebook.com/AmyloidosisAwarenes. Can’t make the event? Donate today via the CMAF web page. Either way, join in the fun and support a great cause along the way.

Beating the Summer Heat: Best Places to Cool Off in South Jersey

By Steffen Klenk

T

rying to beat the summer heat? You’re not alone! Our area recently experienced one of the hottest heat waves in decades, with temperatures into the 90s at the shore, and the mainland hitting 100 degrees with a heat index over 110. With so many people trying to find relief from the heat and humidity, here are a few suggestions to help you and your family stay cool. Lake Lenape Park in Mays Landing provides the perfect escape from the crowds of the shore. The park stretches over 2,000 acres and offers a variety of activities such as boating, camping, kayaking or canoeing, fishing, playgrounds and picnic tables. Also situated along the park is its very own beach spot, The Cove, which has a nominal entrance fee. Lake Lenape

Park is open daily from 7:30am until a half hour after sunset. Spending the day at a waterpark offers instant relief and fun. OC Waterpark, located conveniently off the Ocean City Boardwalk at Plymouth Place, offers various activities for both children and adults with waterslides, a play area for kids and the lazy river. OC Waterpark is open 9:30am6pm daily through Labor Day weekend and offers rates for day-long and abbreviated sessions. All-day passes start at $36 with discounted rates for abbreviated sessions. Passes can be purchased on location or online at ocwaterpark. com. Did you know that the pipe organ inside the main auditorium of Boardwalk Hall is the largest organ in the world?! It holds the Guinness World Record for Largest Pipe Organ and Musical In-

strument Ever Constructed. It is also the loudest. There are believed to be over 33,000 pipes. Recitals and tours are presented Monday-Friday from 12:30-1pm through September. In

addition, their weekly “Curator’s Tour” on Wednesdays at 10am, allow guests an in-depth look at the mechanism of instrument. All tours are free; donations are kindly accepted with all proceeds going toward the restoration of the pipe organ. More details can be found at boardwalkorgans.org. Some of my favorite water activities can be found at Totally Tubular.

For families like Lauren Hansen of North Carolina and her daughter Sloane, the bayside attraction “is a really a great idea. I’d recommend it.” The Aqua Park is recommended for ages 5-22. Visit their website at https://www.totallytubularwatersports.com/aquapark for up-to-date hours. Our local shore towns all have their own community center, each offering their own unique schedule of events and activities. The Ocean City Community Center at 1735 Simpson Ave. is open year round with an in-

door pool and fitness center, library, historical museum and art center. More information is available at ocnj.us. Please remember to keep cool. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and keep an eye on our elderly population. Here’s an idea that will ensure your drinks stay cooler: put water bottles in the freezer overnight. Carry a cooler with a plastic insert, or reuse plastic bags for extra insulation to keep drinks cooler longer, and keep coolers in the shade or under an umbrella. Hidden Gems of South Jersey—Keeping Family Traditions One Family’s Century-long Journey to the Jersey Shore

By Tammy Thornton

W

hether you live at the Jersey Shore year round or only visit in the summer, keeping certain traditions is part of the nostalgia of visiting the beach and boardwalk every summer. Grandma must have her funnel cake or dad his Johnson’s Popcorn, and of course, the kids want to go on the rides. But for one family, these traditions have been going strong for 104 years! The Kegel family, originally from Philadelphia, started spending summers in South Jersey in 1915. Back then, Walter Kegel was only four years old when his father began taking the family to Atlantic City every summer. Later, Walter and his wife, Ruth, would continue the tradition. Their only son Alan recalls his time

Catching the perfect wave has become the ultimate goal. When Grandpa Walt was in his 80’s and couldn’t see very well, he would ask someone to “point me to the beach” so he could bodysurf. Grandma Ruth preferred gentle days and loved to float. Before the family grew to include the fifth generation, they stayed in a house they lovingly called “The Shack” from 1990-99. A look back

Ventnor Boat Works

B

ack in the early 1900’s, a small boat yard in Ventnor gained fame as the builder of the world’s fastest custom speed boats. Founded by Adolph Apel in 1902, Ventnor Boat Works developed a tradition of expert craftsmanship with high performance among the best builders in the world. During much of the formidable years prior to World War II, Ventnor, with its advanced designs, concentrated on producing custom-built racing hulls for many famous individuals interested in winning races and establishing new world speed records. Ventnor dominated racing and high-speed boat designs. It’s watercraft won many domestic and international speed trials, races and regattas including the Gold Cup. They built Sir Malcolm Campbell’s “Bluebird”, the fastest boat in the world at that time. With World War II beginning, Ventnor relocated and enlarged its

facilities to the waterfront in West Atlantic City. It switched from building racing and pleasure craft to producing war ships. Ventnor was contracted to build air-sea rescue boats for the Army and sub-chasers for the Navy. The war taught Ventnor a great deal about light weight, strong, quality building techniques and time-saving methods using plywood construction. From that time on, Ventnor built many types and sizes of watercraft including rowboats, skiffs, tenders, race boats, runabouts, cruisers and even sailboats. Various materials were used, such as mahogany plank, plywood and lapstrake construction. Propulsion varied from electric, steam, diesel, gasoline and wind power. Construction techniques and materials have changed through the years and Ventnor had always proven itself with the ability to change with the times, while maintaining its engineering, styling and construction leadership.

Keep Them Healthy all Year Long By Nancy Adler

T

he summertime means longer days, sunshine, barbecue lots of beach and pool time and kids out of school! It also comes with later bedtimes for kids and a much-needed break from test taking and homework assignments. Even though children need to get away from the hustle and bustle of attending school each day, they still need healthy meals and snacks for proper development during their summer vacation. Your family looks forward to it all year. Summer means freedom from homework, PTA meetings, and the rush to catch the bus. In fact, bedtimes, meal planning, and TV rules sometimes take a vacation, too. But this carefree season isn’t always good for kids’ health. Even though a break from the grind can be relaxing, some parts of a routine are important for kids to

stick with all year round, like the right amount of sleep and time to exercise every day. Too much of a break can lead to unhealthy changes. Seems to me that children tend to gain weight faster during the summer. And they’re more likely to become overweight or obese when they’re out of school. So even when you’re taking a break this summer, the choices your family makes are still important. The school year comes with plenty of structure, and all that scheduling can help encourage healthy habits. Put a little rhythm into lazy summer days with activities that will keep them active. You can sign your child up for day camp, swim lessons, playgroups, story time, or other activities. Check your local parks district and libraries for free or low-cost options. Or make your own plan for regular

activities to cut down on boredom. A daily schedule could mean less screen time and less snacking (and maybe even less whining). Take advantage of your kids’ extra downtime to get them involved with their food, too. Plant a garden together, or visit a farmers market to pick from all the in-season produce. Let them choose tomatoes, melons, or peppers, and then make dinner together. I know first hand that kids who learn how to grow and cook their own food eat more fruits and vegetables. It’s true! My grandchildren love to be hands on in the kitchen. Somehow food they didn’t like magically tastes better when they made lunch themselves . You can still pack a lunch for your kids, even when they’re not headed to school. It works great if they’re spending the day at camp. But they

can also take it along on a hike or to the pool or park, instead of grabbing fast food or raiding the vending machines. Fill that brown bag with fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein, and skip sweetened drinks. At home, swap out the junk food in your pantry and fridge (soda, cookies, chips, fatty frozen foods) for healthier stuff. When your kids want to raid the kitchen during the day, they’ll have better foods to choose from. Without the early school-day alarm looming, getting kids to bed on time can seem less important. But a sleep routine still matters. Kids who sleep less have less energy to do the things that keep them healthy, like exercising. A tired brain is also more likely to make unhealthy choices, like zoning out on the couch with a bag of chips all day. So limit those up-all-night sleepovers and be firm about a set bedtime. Try keep a regular dinnertime . Make sure your child gets fresh air and exercise during the day. Turn off screens an hour before bed. Most of all, enjoy the Summer! Extra Points with Pete “The Champion Golfer of the Year”…

T

hat’s the phrase they use to announce the winner of the British Open in golf every year. Known everywhere outside the United States as “The Open”, I’m always amazed at who comes out on top. You see, links golf is so much different than the golf played in the United States. The best way to describe it is to point out that in America, you boom a big drive off the tee box and hit a ball high that lands softly on the green when trying to hole out your golf ball. When playing the great courses of Scotland and Ireland, which I was lucky enough to do in 1998 and 2002 respectively, your mission is to keep the ball low out of the wind and elements. There are blind shots and trouble all over the place in the form of

thick native grass & rough where your ball disappears. Oh, and it’s not uncommon to use a putter from as much as 5 yards off the green just to get the ball rolling as soon as possible. Yes, you could say I have a real affinity for links golf and it was fun to see “The Open” played in Northern Ireland for the first time. Since I last wrote, the Phillies have sur vived a tough series with the Dodgers and taken two out of three in Pittsburgh. Plus, they’ve added some new faces with perhaps more to come as the trade deadline approaches. The Eagles begin training camp with high expectations. The Birds also announced that a veteran pro-bowler is returning to the nest for one last hurrah. One of the Sixers newly high paid guys is saying he was “underutilized” before and is now ready to “step up”. The Atlantic City

Blackjacks wrap up their season with a loss on the field, but a win in the stands. From the entertainment world, I’ve rediscovered an old show I forgot as it’s now in a new home on Netflix. Also, a Netflix original is about to drop for its seventh and final season this week. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts for the week that was: ●● Kudos to Shane Lowry from Ireland for winning the 148th Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. At some point in Sunday’s round, the golfers were playing in rain & wind so strong that umbrellas were getting turned inside out. That is so difficult to do, and yet he managed to shoot a one over par score of 72 to win the Claret Jug. His quote after winning was perfect too as he said “we are all ONE country of Ireland when it comes to golf”. ●● I mentioned above that I was lucky enough to go on bucket list golfing trips in 1998 to Scotland and 2002 to Ireland. We stayed in the South of Ireland on our trip, but it’s always neat for me to see courses that I played show up on TV when the Open goes to them. I consider myself very fortunate to have played St. Andrews, Turnberry, Royal Troon, Prestwick & Carnoustie in Scot-

land, five courses that have hosted the Open, although Prestwick is no longer in the rotation, they are all historical courses indeed…! In Ireland, I got to play some famous tracks, like Ballybunion, Lahinch and Killarney, but nothing from the Open rotation. Thanks to my Uncle Henry for making those two trips possible back in the day. The Phillies survived a series with the NL leading Dodgers at home before heading to Pittsburgh and taking two out of three from the Pirates. Newly signed Drew Smyly went six strong innings in his Phillies debut last Sunday and they’ve also added a right hander in the bullpen in Mike Morin. More changes might be on the way with the July 31st trade deadline fast approaching. It’s probably easiest to sum up the Phillies recent run like this. After the Pittsburgh series, which they won without having to use their ace Aaron Nola, the Phillies had won five of eight heading to Detroit for a two-game series with a reeling Tigers team. Eagles training camp begins this week and the number one question on most people’s minds is “how does Carson Wentz look?” No doubt even with all the off-season signings and trades the Eagles have made, the number one priority for the team will be Wentz and his health. He was okay his rookie season, but after that, he hasn’t been able to finish a season healthy, and now they’ve paid him as the franchise QB. Nick Foles is in Jacksonville, it’s time for #11 to step up, stay healthy, and lead

the Birds back to a Super Bowl. One more piece of Eagles news as the team announced they had signed veteran RB and kick returner Darren Sproles to a one-year deal. You may recall Sproles was injured in the Super Bowl LII season and couldn’t play in the win. He came back the next year, saying it would be his final run, but got hurt again. Came back a 3rd time, and injury struck AGAIN. It says something about both his athletic ability and how loved he is in the locker room that the Eagles keep giving him one year deals. As far as I’m concerned, the guy is a future Hall of Famer, and still a benefit to the team. To the Sixers now as Tobias Harris has gone on the record as saying he felt “underutilized” last year, especially in the playoffs. With the departures of Jimmy Butler and J.J. Reddick, Harris is going to get utilized like he’s never been utilized before…! Hope he’s up to the task. Finally, the record will show the Atlantic City Blackjacks finished their inaugural season with a 35-28 loss to the Baltimore Brigade and a season record of 4-8. What it won’t show is the growing number of fans who began to latch on to the team and call it their own. The announced attendance was 6.266 for their final game, one that had no playoff impli-

I feel the same way about “Orange is the New Black”, which is a Netflix original. The series wraps up its seventh and final season with a bit of a major plot change. Piper Chapman, the lead character, now has to adjust to life outside Litchfield. If you haven’t watched this show, Netflix will, of course, let you catch up. Congrats to creator Jenji Kohan for a game-changing series of television. Don’t forget, you can listen to me on the radio each Saturday on 97.3 ESPN from 8-10 a.m. It’s the “Pete Thompson Show” and I’ve been calling it “Breakfast with the PT”, so I hope you’ll tune in and interact with me on the air.

If you missed indoor football this season, make sure to get out to Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall next season as the Atlantic City Blackjacks put on a good show and are worth the trip…! Entertainment now, and my father reminded me that “Designated Survivor” is now on Netflix. Kiefer

Sutherland plays a senator who’s unexpectedly promoted to President of the United States after a terrorist attack takes out POTUS & others at the U.S. Capitol. The show ran for two seasons on ABC, so in season 3 on Netflix, I have to admit it was a bit weird to hear the characters (and the President) curse. I’m sure actual Presidents have cursed from time to time, but it was still odd for me to hear that. Either way, the show is still excellent and worth a watch.

Sunflowers Sprout Love them, I wasn’t sure what to do with them. “A little nervous?” Clipper asked

By Jacqueline D’Angelo ast year a friend of mine, George “Clipper” Allen, handed me a plastic bag full of sunflower heads containing last year’s seeds. He asked me if I wanted to try growing sunflowers in my new garden. I had a fresh new pallet, after trucks that had lifted our home, due to Hurricane Sandy, had destroyed most, if not all, of our original gardens, that had been there for 25 years. I loved sunflowers for years, mainly in pictures and drawings. They were my favorite growing up. Sunflowers to me were multifunctional, pretty to look at, and tasted good too. I would often see my mother throwing a few sunflower seeds here and there, and watching them grow. I noticed they always made her happy, but I don't think I ever fully realized how very special these sunflowers were. I myself never really tried to grow

I immediately made myself comfortable and one by one, popped the seeds out of the molded sunflower heads, removing all the little critters

At the end, I must have grown 12 different varieties. “Pot Luck,” is what I called it, and it was exciting, and educational, all at the same time. I was in awe with the tall ones. I felt so small looking up at these giants. My tallest measured at 11 1/2 feet upon opening of the Sunflower but continued to grow. I had learned a new thing. I didn’t know they did that! Looking up at these giant plants with leaves bigger than an elephant’s ear, you begin to realize, how small you are compared to the universe. The shorter ones were just as amazing. I would gaze into the heads of each one like it was a kaleidoscope. Snapping pictures along the way, it awakened my love for photography. After having endured everything that came along with Hurricane Sandy, I would say after several years, I was finally relaxing. It was soothing and food for my famished soul, and yes it made me very, very, happy. If you’re wondering what happened to the ones in the pots that I couldn’t find homes for, well they still had a home - our home, and they had made the tiniest of sunflowers, just as beautiful as their siblings that had grown up to be giants.

Lucy’s Forgotten Relative

ost fans of the Jersey Shore know of Lucy the elephant in Margate but very few know that she once had a cousin located a bit further south in Cape May. Known as the "Light of Asia" or Old Dumbo by the locals, she was designed by Philadelphia architect N.H. Culver and was built for land speculator Theodore M. Reger. The men were no doubt influenced by James V. Lafferty, designer of Lucy in 1881 and “Elephantine Colossus” built in Coney Island in 1882. Completed in 1884,its owner ran ads in the local paper soliciting tenants for his colossal pachyderm. “Parties wishing rooms in the elephant to sell soda water, fancy articles, advertising, etc. and the privilege for bathhouses,

The hind legs were equipped with spiral stairs that provided access to the interior of the elephant. It was estimated that over one million pieces of wood were required to construct the elephant. It was covered with a skin consisting of over 13,000 square feet of tin.Two sets of stairs on either side of the interior led to the howdah, where an observatory offered tourists a scenic view of the Atlantic Ocean for ten cents. She was located in what later became South Cape May - now the empty stretch of beach between Second Avenue and Cape May Point that today borders the nature preserve. Although the electric railroad ran along the beach from east Cape May to Cape May Point, most people preferred to skip the paid attraction and

The Hurley Line:

Gender-Inclusive Language is the Democrat Socialists Latest Scheme to Re-Write America

By HARRY HURLEY Political Columnist

A

few weeks ago, we outlined with great specificity how the "new" American Democrat Socialists are trying to erase our past, in order to control our present and future. Simultaneously, a direct part of their radical agenda involves re-writing our language. The latest example is Berkeley, California. Believe it or not, the City government officially enacted a law to eliminate all gender specific nouns and pronouns from their city code. The City of Berkeley has replaced them (partial listing) as follows: Men and Women = People Men or Women = A single gender

Male of Female = People of different genders She = They He = They Brother = Sibling Sister = Sibling Manmade = Human made, Artificial, Manufactured, Machine made, synthetic Manhole = Maintenance hole Manpower = Human effort or workforce Mankind = Person kind Master = Captain, Skipper, Pilot, Safety Officer, Central Chairman = Chair or Chairperson Bondsman = Bonds-person Craftsman = Craftspeople or artisans Fireman, Firewoman = Firefighter Fraternal = Social Heirs = Beneficiaries Journeyman = Journey Maiden = Family Ombudsman = Ombuds, Investigating Official Pregnant (woman or women) = Pregnant employees Repairman = Repairs or Repairer

Salesman = Salesperson or Salespeople Sorority of Fraternity = Collegiate Greek system residence Sportsman = Hunters Watchman = Guards. Additionally, in all (Berkeley) cases, the masculine pronoun includes the feminine; meaning that words referring to a specific gender will be extended to any other gender. You have to read the before mentioned sentence 100 times and your head will still want to explode. The effort to change our language and everything that we thought that we knew all of our lives is a strategic approach to change our society and recast it in this radical image. The radicals want to tie everyone up in knots. If these new English kabuki rules actually go into mainstream effect, you won't even be able to have a conversation with anyone, without offending someone or breaking some new social "norm." For example, say that you arrive to a friend's home and your friend is pregnant. You can't that "she is a beautiful pregnant woman." In fact, you can't even call her "she" or "pregnant woman." It would go something like this: "They" are a beautiful "pregnant employee." This is insanity. In honor of the "men" opps, I mean, "persons" who walked on the moon, 50 years ago this past week, Neil Armstrong said as he became the first man ("person") to step foot on the moon: "That's one small step for man ... One giant leap for mankind." This is now deemed to be significantly intolerant and in Berkeley and elsewhere, it's actually now illegal. Armstrong would now have to say: "That's one small leap for "person" ... One Giant leap for "Person kind." I don't know about you, but, I will never play this radical game. Men are men. Women are women. We're different, but, equal. God made us this way. The radicals in our country are more emboldened then ever before. They are trying to impose their ridiculous philosophy upon all of us. They think that they get to decide that a gender preference philosophy of governance of their

choosing should be put into law for all to follow. They explain it as gender-neutral. But, it's not neutral at all. It's just the opposite. It robs us of our unique equality. Once again, we must fiercely guard our liberties. The radicals are stealing them from us by implementing one scheme after another, with increasing success. The Berkeley City Council said that "There's power in language. This is a small move, but it matters," said Councilman, I mean, Council Member Riegel Robinson. The fact that they think this is a small move is disturbing. It shows you that they are preparing to do much more. The point the Councilman made with respect to "there's power in language," couldn't be more true. They know that if they can control what we can and can't say, this is a significant part of their scheme to transform America from a free market capitalism-based nation to their dream of an American Socialist Utopia. I want to impress upon you that the Berkeley California City Council passed this new language city ordinance without discussion or comments and it was not considered to be controversial. That is really scary. The Berkeley City Councilman says it like this: "Having a male-centric municipal code is inaccurate and not reflective of our reality," said Robinson. "Women and non-binary individuals are just as entitled to accurate representation. Our laws are for everyone, and our municipal code should reflect that." This is a stunning development, yet, it has received very little coverage. This is also a part of the radicals strategy. They are racing to make fundamental and transformational changes official before people even have a chance to know what just hit them. Even the iconic television/big screen series Star Trek is not immune. The Star Ship Enterprise was initially on a five-year mission to "go where no man has gone before." For hundreds of years, it was simply understood that whenever or wherever a masculine noun (man) or a pronoun is used, it simply means man and woman or men and women. For more than 243 years, Americans have always known that

JULY 25, 2019

when Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence stating "that all men are created equal," this meant that men and women are created equal. The radical change artists want us to now believe that "We The People" (I couldn't resist writing this) are no longer clear about this. That we now need their radical changes to our language in order for all people to feel included. Before changing the English language, they should have given thought to how challenging it is, since there will never, ever be universal acceptance and that concrete rules such as this have no chance to take root in America in the manner that they desire. Do our radicals ever consider that we like things just the way they are? They hate our Country. They hate our freedom. They are desperate to change it. Socialism has failed each and every time throughout all of history. Never once has it succeeded. It can't. It is fatally flawed. It robs people of their freedom and the very reason to exist and strive to achieve. Socialism is Venezuela, where the people are presently in the dark and starving. They have eaten the zoos and their own pets to survive.

For reasons too impossible for me to process, this is where our current American Democrat/Socialists want to take America. Beware, they are achieving great success as of late. Hosted at Seaview Resort- A Dolce Hotel, South New York Road, Galloway, New Jersey from July 12th - 19th. Returning to the area where she was crowned Miss America, 2018 (Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City) brought back pleasant memories to her and a chance for me to once again spend some time with a wonderful young accomplished lady. to be “The first woman Governor of North Dakota.” She not only expressed that to me but she included it in every talk and interaction she had with the school children in the area. However, something new has been added as she “Is thinking of maybe running for the House Of Representatives as the North Dakota Representative to congress”. It was easy to see that the continual requests from the guests and pageant people for photographs, selfies and autographs Cara Mund, Miss America 2018 was still at ease with the title. With a warm and endless smile she posed for photographs and answered questions accommodating every fan request. “I am very happy where my life has taken me and the direction I am going. I am looking forward to going back to school this August and furthering my aspirations”. She is not sure exactly where she will be four years from now, “But wherever I am or whatever I am doing I am ready to accept the challenge and give it my all.” It was not possible to be with Mund and not ask the inevitable question regarding her thoughts

The Road to Retirement Heads West Dream, Plan, Execute

by Charles P. Eberson

I

’m freaking out. The culmination of months of planning for a cross-country trip is upon us. YouTube channels, brochures, road maps, and internet searches have provided us a voluminous amount of information to sift through. At this writing, we are just a few days from our departure and since much of our threemonth expedition is going to involve camping, our living room looks like a display at an L.L. Bean outlet. In the original mental picture of our journey, we envisioned ourselves as vagabonds of the highways traveling carefree from place to place with no schedule: simple carefree children of the 60’s. That quickly evaporated when we attempted to reserve our first campsite at the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin and were told they were full. We pressed on with our inquiries in North Dakota,

South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana with similar results. Our persistence eventually paid off, but at the price of losing the spontaneity we were looking for. At this moment, writing this column is a welcome diversion, a sanctuary from the pressing burden of minutia that must be addressed before we leave. Do we have everything covered: credit card companies notified, copies of important documents made, house rented and personal items stored, medications accounted for, first aid kit for us and our vehicle, itinerary copied for family, chargers for all electronics, etc., etc.? I keep returning to the list on my legal pad, and the multitude of Post-It notes around the house, an exercise in redundancy. My head is spinning, but I think we have everything covered. My wife is trying to talk me down by telling me “we are not going to a third world country, for heaven’s sake.” I am sure there are Costco’s somewhere along the way, but still my

mind keeps spinning. Our friends who know my photography said they are looking forward to seeing photos. I also ambitiously set up a YouTube channel to keep a video log of our adventure. The bar has been raised and now there are expectations to meet, but I realize that I will have to strike a balance between making a record of what may well be the experience of a lifetime and just setting the equipment down to quietly enjoy the majesty of nature. Over thirty years ago, when our children were young, we took them out west to the Badlands in South Dakota, Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. The awe-inspiring landscapes left such an impression that my wife and I vowed to return sometime in the future. Finally, that time is now. I know that this undertaking will change my wife and I somewhat, as many challenges tend to do. At the very least, it

will give us a new appreciation for what we have and what we have survived thus far. By the time this column hits the newsstands, we will have already left home and will be camping in the Apostle Islands prior to moving along to Fargo, North Dakota and points out west. The publisher of Shore Local has been gracious enough to allow me to put my Senior Moments column on the shelf for a while and chronicle our experiences on the road to share with our readers. It is my hope that many of you will be coming along with us on our journey. “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.” - John Muir Charles Eberson has been in the newspaper business for over 25 years. HEROtini Challenge Enjoys Help from the Local Events

he HERO Campaign has seen no shortage of supporters when it comes to the “Summer of HEROes”, including one local artist who has combined his passion for painting with his commitment to supporting safe and sober driving. Foodies and art lovers alike will have a chance to support the HERO Campaign through a unique opportunity at Steve & Cookie’s, where artist and beloved bartender, Jonathan Baker is raffling off one of his paintings in support of their HEROtini, “The Seedlip Summer Kiss”. On display in the back Oyster Bar, Steve & Cookie’s patrons will recognize the familiar image of Lucy the Elephant, painted in the undulating brush strokes and bold colors, for which Baker is known. According to Baker, his decision to raffle off a painting is one way he can use his art to support the mission of the HERO Campaign and keep his patrons safe as they travel. Launched by the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign over Memorial Day Weekend, the HEROtini Challenge

is a summer-long contest between thirty-one Atlantic County restaurants and bars, challenging each to create the best “mocktail” in celebration of designated drivers. Participating establishments have planned numerous events to promote their unique HEROtini, including a HEROtini sampling event at Dock’s Oyster House on July 30th,

and a “Christmas in July” themed pop-shop and HEROtini tasting at Hi Point Pub on July 31st. With the goal of significantly reducing (if not eliminating) DUI incidents in Atlantic County, The HEROtini Challenge is a donate-to-vote contest, the results of which will yield very tangible results for area residents and visitors, alike. The funds

raised will support the campaign’s Holiday HEROES Safe Ride Program, providing free and safe rides home locally for patrons of participating establishments over the 2019 holiday season (from Thanksgiving Eve to New Year’s Day), to prevent drinking and driving. The contest lasts until August 29th, when the ultimate HEROtini Challenge winner will be announced at Linwood Country Club, where the final HEROtini Happening takes place. The establishment to raise the most in donations will take home the highly coveted HEROtini Cup. To purchase a $10 raffle ticket for Jonathan Baker’s painting, visit the host at Steve & Cookie’s, or purchase at the Oyster Bar. The winning raffle ticket will be drawn shortly before the final HEROtini Happening, on August 29th. To vote for your favorite HEROtini, visit herotini.org For information about all things relating to the HERO Campaign, follow the HERO Campaign Facebook page, or visit the website: herocampaign.org.

Most importantly Atlantic City by Shawn Rock featuring Nina Blue can be purchased legally and is a great way to ensure more great art and music that makes Atlantic City Shine. M

ajor cities from coast to coast have had songs written about them that have become themes... from I Love New York to We Love L.A. Truth is if you are over the age of 50 you might think of Atlantic City’s theme as "On The Boardwalk In Atlantic City" recorded by Dick Haymes (circa 1946.) If you are over the age of 35? You might consider , "Atlantic City" first recorded by Bruce Springsteen in 1982. Those songs and others are great however, there have been a few updates, additions and upgrades to Atlantic City since 1946. Enter Shawn Rock with the new song "Atlantic City" featuring vocalist Nina Blue. This 2019 theme song for Atlantic City is everything you want and more than you would expect. The song (that runs 4 minutes and change) is a passionate love song to Atlantic City that should connect generations of music/shore lovers. Shawn Rock’s lyrics pay tribute to the sites and sounds that have been a part of Atlantic City since well before his birth, such as The Steel Pier and funnel cake. Rock and Nina Blue also do a wonderful job of highlighting the businesses, sites and sounds of Atlantic City today, on and off the boardwalk such as The Hard Rock Casino, Fish Heads and Gardner’s Basin. Recently in an interview with Shawn Rock he explained…”I wanted to do a new anthem for Atlantic City that everyone could enjoy and rock with.” Mission Accomplished. Indeed as a single, the hook/chorus is catchy and even the lyrics are fun. The lyrics are so fun that I imagine kids young and old will be playing this song over and over to learn the lyrics...or just google the lyrics and rap a long. The other major advantage that Atlantic City by Shawn Rock and Nina Blue have over previous songs about the shore is a great music video. The video version of the song opens at The AC Highschool football stadium

and gives us wonderful shots from all across AC. The director takes us (I am assuming by drone, helicopter or Superman) to witness some breath-taking aerial images/video that you can’t see

standing on the beach or boardwalk. We also see Shawn and Nina at various plays around town enjoying AC from the perspective that many of our tourist see and that our natives are proud of.

he beach cruiser is timeless. The simple design resembles bikes from many years ago when life was slower paced. While some riders prefer bending over with control of 18 speeds on a lightweight frame, most folks along the shore would rather enjoy the trip with comfort and style. When you’re riding a cruiser bike, you’re not in a hurry. The easy and laidback cruiser bike will transport you to a simpler time. A time when you didn’t have a care in the world and could just enjoy the simplicity and freedom of the wind in your hair and the sun on your face as you pedaled around. simple design, have been around since the early 1930s. Schwinn designed the first cruiser as an affordable alternative to the more expensive sport bicycles on the market at that time. These first cruisers were heavy-duty workhorses, incorporating steel frames and sturdy, wide tires. These features allowed the bike to handle more wear-and-tear than their competitors. Americans, still reeling from the Great Depression, soon adopted the cruiser as an affordable and preferred way to get around. Cr u i s e r s q u i c k l y earned a reputation as reliable and easy to ride,

and by the 1950s, cruiser reached the height of popularity. Other manufacturers quickly jumped on the cruiser bandwagon, each offering more creative and unique designs to woo new buyers. From cowboy-themed cruisers to models that included faux gas tanks and headlights, there was a cruiser suited to every personality and taste. With such popularity, it didn’t take long for cruiser bikes to become an integral part of the beach scene. Because cruisers are easy to ride and their fat tires excel on flat terrain and sand, they quickly became popular in vacation destinations as an inexpensive and fun alternative to a car. Locals and touristscould pedal to the beach without parking troubles. This carefree and low-cost way to get around helped establish cruiser bikes as an iconic part of the beach lifestyle.

Enjoy free admission to this festive Jimmy Buffett tribute celebration taking place on Friday, August 9th from 5pm – 10pm. Come wearing your most outrageous Parrothead gear. There will be prizes awarded for the most bombastic outfits. Not sure what to wear? Keeping in the tropical theme, women’s Parrothead outfits tend to include lots of hula skirts, colorful leis, and brightly colored sundresses. Fun accessories women can add to their outfits include parrot-themed jewelry, gaudy tropical sunglasses, and seashell or coconut bras. For the men, Jimmy Buffett outfits tend to be just as over-the-top as the women’s outfits, if not even zanier. It’s not uncommon to see men rocking a hula skirt or a seashell bra over a t-shirt and shorts. Tamer options include Hawaiian shirts, board shorts or swimming trunks, and of course, heavily accessorized hats. Be one of the first 500 people through

Music will be performed live by one of the most popular Jimmy Buffett tribute bands in the entire country, The Landsharks. Tips to Take Great Pet Pics

W

Photos by Tom Briglia

hether you’re hoping to make your dog an Instagram sensation or you just want a nice portrait for the mantle, you’ve likely discovered pets, in general, can be elusive around cameras. Check out these tips and tricks for getting your fur baby to sit for the camera and look picture perfect, from e-tailer Zulily, creative photographer, Taylor Graham: ●● After choosing a great location for your shoot, give your pet a few minutes to get comfortable with the new setting. ●● If you’re shooting outside, situate your pet in a shaded area. Direct sunlight can make your pet look greasy, and distracting shadows can obscure important features. A flat, overcast day makes for the most flattering pet photos. ●● Get low to your pet’s level and frame the face tightly, focusing on eyes for maximum impact. Remember to photograph the most endearing parts of your pet. Often overlooked, paws and ears can be some of the most expressive and adorable features of your furry friend. ●● Treats and squeaky toys are a given for getting pets to focus, but make sure you’re using them to your advantage. Hold the toy or treat as close to the lens as possible. This will get your pet’s gaze right where you want it to

be. Most cameras and camera phones have a “burst mode” that takes many pictures in a row. Later you can select the perfect frame.

Don’t just pose your dog against a white wall. Add flair with accessories that fit your pet’s personality. For unique pet products at great prices, shop apps like Zulily. To celebrate the “dog days of summer” in August, the app launches two-month long sales (breaking from its traditional 72-hour sales) for pet parents that will help you capture lasting memories of your pooch. ●● With easy-to-use smartphone apps like VSCO and Photoshop: Express, you can adjust brightness, color and sharpness to bring a professional quality to images in seconds. With a few tricks up your sleeve, you can take better pet snapshots, and what better way to celebrate the dog days of summer than by capturing some amazing memories of your furry friend? ●●

have grown so weary of talking heads, pundits, radio personalities, etc. who deliberately spread disinformation to rile up the public in order to reinforce their particular political bias. Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, are all guilty of this and, even more distressing, our local broadcasters engage in this practice. I’ll cite a case in point: Recently Harry Hurley went on a rant to smear our District 2 Assemblymen Vince Mazzeo and John Armato. Hurley accused the Assemblymen of voting for “massive” tax and fee increases. A simple check of their voting records will show that is not the case. They have both taken a position inconsistent with their party to vote against increases. Hurley even accused them of “taxing rain”. In fact the record will show that both Assemblymen voted against the rain tax. Look it up Harry: the bill number is S-1073. Mr. Hurley also accused the two Assemblymen of taking funding

from our veterans and giving it to “illegals”. Again, a simple check of the facts will show that no vote or bill to remove veteran funding or provide money to “illegals” was included in the 2018/2019 legislative budget, hence that statement is false. It is my understanding that Assemblymen Mazzeo and Armato introduced a bill this year to replace the veteran funding. In another falsehood, easily debunked, Mr. Hurley accused Assemblyman Mazzeo of voting for legalized gambling in North Jersey. Anyone wishing to check the votes of their legislators can go to www. njleg.state.nj.us, where they’ll find under session 2016-2017, the complete vote on bill number SCR-1. Assemblyman Mazzeo is a definite “no” vote. Disinformation is a dangerous tool and it is helping to fuel the uber partisan atmosphere in our country which is threatening to tear communities apart. Shame on you, Harry Hurley, for participating in it.

Youth Fishing Tournament Catching Lots of Interest

Y

oung anglers can show off their skills with rod and reel in the Ocean City Fishing Club's 44th annual Boys’ and Girls’ Surf Fishing Tournament on Saturday, August 10. Registration for the free event will begin at 9 a.m. at the nor th end beach near the Ocean Cit y- Longport bridge. Parent s or guardians will be asked to sign a waiver for insurance purposes before their children can participate. Each child must bring his or her own fishing gear and bait. Fishing starts at 10 a.m and ends at noon, followed by an awards presentation. The event will be held rain or shine. “Last year, we had to curtail the tournament after about an hour, at the first sound of thunder and lightning,” said Ed Hoban, OCFC chairman of the event. “Hopefully, we’ll have

better weather this year.” The tournament has three age categories: 8-10, 11-12, and 13-16 years old, with a boys’ and girls’ division in each grouping. Parents can help cast for children 8-10 years old, but once their lines are in the water, those youngsters have to do their own fishing. Three anglers who c atch the most fish in each age category will win a rod and reel. The boy and girl who land the biggest fish overall will receive bicycles and trophies. “The Miller family donates the bikes each year in memory of Ralph Miller, who ran the tournament, and his wife, Marion,” Hoban said. Eighty-four youngsters participated last year and caught 32 fish. Flounder was the biggest fish reeled in at 16.25 inches and 15.5 inches in the girls and boys divisions, respectively.

Sea Turtle Rescue Off OC, "Tabitha" is Recovering

A

140 -pound injured loggerhead sea turtle was found late last month floating in the ocean off Ocean City. Still alive and not cut by propellers, it was rescued by a parasailing crew. They towed her in and took her to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine. The turtle, named Tabitha, was covered with barnacles. Veterinarians from both the hospital and Sea Turtle Recovery rigged Tabitha in a harness and put her through a CT scan at Mount Laurel Animal Hospital. Once Upon a Time in Atlantic City... Remembering The DBL Crew

In Atlantic & Cape May County The Light By Raymond Tyler

O

nce upon a time in Atlantic City, before hip hop artists were appearing in every major casino hotel/night club in town there was Donte Dublin and Jamar June known as The DBL Crew. When I was recently asked to write about the new Atlantic City song by Shawn Rock, I started to reflect on all the great talented hip hop artists from the 1980 until now (2019.) So many great artists fill my mental list. Rappers, graffiti artists, dancers, DJs and turntablists of all ages, genders, races. There was Sweet Beats with Bells that showcased four young ladies from Atlantic City High School

that met in band and decided to became my favorite local hip hop act ever. Sweet Beats included 4 talented ladies (I think all grandmothers now) that knew music and hip and blended live instruments including the vibes with hip hop lyrics and beats. When I think of Atlantic City DJs there are so many. DJ Pots and Pans is the local DJ that inspired me the most early on and DJ ILL Nino is the DJ that inspires me most DJ today. DJ Swoosh and DJ Fah D are 2 brothers, that I love for their ability to move crowds and move through the business world. And DJ K Ave is one local DJ I always love to hear play. However, when I think about AC’s Hip Hop History? The stories that need to be told more are those of Crown’s Record Store, The Charles Drew and Stanley Holmes Drill Teams, and The DBL Crew. I attended high school with Jamar June and the late Donte Dublin in the 1980’s. At the time, I considered myself one of AC’s best rappers and DJs. In truth, I know a lot more about vocabulary than I do about showmanship on the mic. ( I was

Paid training to obtain CDL Class B license. Will pay for CDL permit. Must be able to pass criminal background check & drug test.

solid though even now you don’t want to test me.) I considered Donte a friendly rival and even when he signed a record deal I still took every opportunity to show off what I could do. However, I backed off when I heard a record the DBL Crew recorded called In America (The Hype Beat.) The single is a masterpiece and in the very last conversation I had with Dublin, I told him so. I remember seeing his face smile and giving him a firm handshake /hug and telling him… “I am proud and that track, is lyrically and musically superior to anything ever produced here.” No these may not be the exact words but that was what I wanted to convey. I went from being a rival to a supporter. See back then. MC’s/rappers did not just give compliments to other rappers unless they truly meant it. One thing was

for sure we loved the music and the culture so if a rapper gave another rapper respect/compliments... that was much rarer than money…( I have attended parties with rappers I didn’t like to meet women.) There is not a lot of footage or music available by The DBL Crew. You can however hear the song that I love as theme for AC Hip Hop , In America: The Hype beat on Youtube and I also play it on my radio shows and podcasts. It’s a great example of what hip hop sounded like before you could make a whole song and shoot the video on one phone.
