t is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we dedicate this issue of Shore Local to the memory of a remarkable individual, Donald B. Kravitz. A legendary figure in the world of photography, Don's exceptional skills behind the lens graced nearly every issue of our publication. His photographic journey extended beyond our pages, capturing the essence of Ocean City, headlining events in Atlantic City, the vibrancy of the Garden State Film Festival, and the iconic moments of Miss America. As a respected photographer for Getty Images, Don's work reached global audiences, often featured on the covers of national magazines.

But merely speaking of Don as a

photographer would be an injustice to the multifaceted man he was. To both Bob and me, he was a mentor, a guiding light in the formative years of Shore Local. His wisdom and candid advice were invaluable as we navigated the challenges of establishing and growing this publication. Don had an uncanny ability to provide clarity at crossroads, always available for guidance and support.

Beyond the professional realm, Don held a special place in our lives as a friend. His wit and humor were sources of endless joy, turning our breakfast meetings into cherished moments.

Don's generosity knew no bounds, both in time and talent. He was always ready to lend a hand, a testament to his character.

Don’s ability to forge connections played a pivotal role in the growth and impact of our organization.

Don’s life was a tapestry of love and dedication. He was a devoted husband to Carol, a proud father to five children, and a doting Pop-pop to his grandchildren. His service as a decorated Vietnam veteran spoke

above all, a dear friend whose legacy will continue to inspire us all.

Atlantic County SWAT Team ready for the call to duty

H

ow often have we heard an eyewitness after a tragedy exclaim, “I never thought something like this could happen here”? Well, rest assured, the Atlantic County Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team makes sure when dangerous situations occur, they are prepared to answer the call. In addition to their other extensive training exercises, the Atlantic County SWAT conducts drills throughout each month at various locations to learn and practice tactical skills. Team commanders set up different scenarios for four squads, with specific topics in mind.

On Jan. 11 and 18, they chose the Linwood Public Library and Our Lady of Sorrows Church to conduct

The team went through multiple scenarios, practicing searching sections of these older buildings where a perpetrator might hide. Each group is made up of both seasoned SWAT officers and those that are newer to the team.

The team leaders expose the officers to new situations that they have not encountered before so that they can build on their training. Since each of the SWAT officers is on a police force of a municipality in Atlantic County,

After a day of serious training, Atlantic County SWAT takes a lighter moment to pose in front of Linwood Public Library. they are able to respond immediately from their locations to any callouts or incidents.

You may have an opportunity to see SWAT officers under less stressful situations, as these officers will often attend special Boy Scouts meetings, National Night Out, or other police-related events. We

The Atlantic County SWAT is a multi-agency regional tactical team commanded by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office. here was lots of tie-dye, flowers and groovy music at the Elkstock music festival on Saturday, Jan. 20.

The event, a twist on the iconic 1969 Woodstock music festival, was held at Elks Lodge #2563 in Egg Harbor Township and raised funds for The Elks National Foundation (ENF).

Candy Phister, chaplain and chairperson on the Community Project & Activities and the Elks National Foundation subcommittees, put the event together.

She came up with the music festival when she needed to plan a fundraiser for ENF. Phister said the idea popped into her mind because her daughter, Nikki Davis, is a musician.

Phister first became involved with the Elks Lodge in 2018 when she retired and wanted something to do. So, a friend who was already a member invited her to check it out.

She wound up liking it and stayed.

proceeds toward ENF. “We had a fantastic turn out, a fantastic group of people,” Phister said. “To have that many people and no issues was beyond expectations” The event wound up selling out, with 200 attendees.

Although Phister hasn’t gotten the numbers yet for how much they raised, it can be estimated the event brought in well over $2,000 by selling 200 or more tickets at $10 a piece and an additional cash bar. lodge. She’s going into her sixth year as an elk.

“It’s a great place to belong if you want to give back to the community,” she said.

After Phister thought of the event, she then got in touch with six bands, who all donated their time for the full day of live music from the ‘60s and ‘70s and classic rock.

“I really enjoyed all the music, all the musicians were terrific,” said Elizabeth Chiola, a member, who sold tickets at the door. She got involved the same way Phister did — a friend she worked with 20 years ago brought her in.

The featured bands included Twisted Livin’, D’Arc Family, the Dead Reckoning, Indelible Groove, Toni Teschner, Nikki Davis, and Jeff Properi.

The lodge was filled with music, excited attendees and Woodstock-themed decor, which was handmade by Phister’s daughter mostly with materials members already had.

oyotes are out and about in Atlantic County.

On Jan. 18, Nicole Mammucari posted on the “Original Egg Harbor Township Area Happenings 08234” Facebook group a photo of a coyote, captioned, “Pine Avenue last night. watch your pets.”

Posts like Mammucari’s may be popping up on your timeline more often in the coming weeks, as coyote mating season is upon us until March.

With the gestation period following the mating season and lasting 63 days, pups are born throughout April to mid-May. According to the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife, “historically, the coyote is not native to New Jersey. The coyote extended its range north and east across Canada from the midwest. DNA studies of the species show that those coyotes bred with gray wolves, emerged into the New England states, and have extended their range south through New Jersey.”

Coyotes can live in basically any habitat, like forests, grasslands, deserts, and swamps because they’re extremely adaptable. Their tolerance for human activities means that they can also be found in suburban and urban settings.

The Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station stated,

“One of the critical factors contributing to the adaptability of coyotes is their diverse diet.”

Although coyotes would rather eat meat, they consume a wide range of prey. Their diet ranges from animals as small as insects to beavers, raccoons, and young or injured deer.

They are opportunistic omnivores, which means they consume a variety of fruits, nuts and eggs when meat is not available.

Here are some guidelines and precautions that can help reduce the likelihood of conflicts with coyotes, according to the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife:

1. Never feed a coyote. Feeding them puts pets and other residents in the neighborhood at risk. Additionally, feeding pet cats and/or wild cats outdoors can attract coyotes because they feed on the pet food and prey upon the cats.

2. Put garbage away in tightly closed containers that cannot be tipped over.

3. Remove sources of water, especially in dry climates.

4. Bring pets in at night.

5. Put away bird feeders at night to avoid attracting rodents and other coyote prey.

6. Provide secure enclosures for rabbits, poultry, and other farm animals.

7. Pick up fallen fruit and cover compost piles.

Although it’s almost unheard of, coyotes have attacked humans. Here are some precautions the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife provided that can be taken to make sure you and your family remain safe.

1. Install motion-sensitive lighting around the house.

2. Clear brush and dense weeds from around dwellings. This reduces protective cover for coyotes and makes the area less attractive to rodents and rabbits. Coyotes, as well as other predators, are attracted to areas where rodents are concentrated like woodpiles.

3. If coyotes are present, make sure they know they’re not welcome.

Make loud noises, blast a canned air siren, throw rocks, or spray them with a garden hose.

New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife also says that if you come in contact with a coyote, you should immediately contact your local police and NJ Fish and Wildlife at 908-735-8793. Outside of normal business hours, call the DEP Hotline at 877-WARN-DEP.

Two new wind farms win state approval, the first since Ørsted’s withdrawal

he New Jersey Board of Public Utilities unanimously approved two bids to create wind energy farms off the state’s coast, renewing Gov. Phil Murphy’s clean energy efforts three months after Danish wind giant Ørsted pulled out of a separate project.

The board unanimously approved offers on Wednesday from Leading Light Wind, a partnership between Invenergy and energyRe, and the Attentive Energy Two projects helmed

by French firm TotalEnergies and Danish company Corio Generation.

The Leading Light Wind project is expected to generate up to 2,400 megawatts, while the Attentive Energy project is expected to bring up to 1,342 megawatts.

“In spite of some setbacks, we’re on track. If anything, this solicitation award shows that we’re moving full steam ahead,” said BPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy. “These two projects will help cement New Jersey’s position as an offshore wind leader and bring clean energy and

economic benefits to our state.”

The board rejected two other bids it received in its third round of wind energy solicitations.

The Leading Light Project is the largest offshore wind farm approved so far by New Jersey regulators, and it is also the first offshore largescale wind project headed by a United States firm to advance so far in New Jersey.

The larger project is expected to create work equivalent to roughly 392 full-time jobs over its first 10 years, while the Attentive Energy project would produce about 120 over the same period, the companies said in their filings.

The bids are the first to win BPU approval since Ørsted announced it would cease development on two 1,100 MW wind farms off of New Jersey’s coast, citing inflation, interest rate hikes, and lingering supply chain issues that the firm said cut $2.8 billion from the project’s value in the first three quarters of 2023.

The cancellation followed rising opposition to wind energy driven by claims that wind surveying work was causing whale deaths along the nation’s northeastern coast.

The projects also saw opposition over cost and their effect on oceanfront views.

“The decisions we are making today are not ones that we take lightly nor ones we are taking without intense deliberations and an overriding concern for the ratepayers of the state of New Jersey,” said BPU commissioner Zenon Christodoulou.

The newer projects may avoid at least some of that opposition. The two projects approved Wednesday proposed farms further afield than existing proposals, which sometimes drew opposition over the effect turbines would have on oceanfront views.

The Attentive Energy project site is located 47.5 miles off New Jersey’s coast, and Leading Light’s site is also more than 40 miles off the shore. By comparison, just 15 miles of water separated Ørsted’s Ocean Wind from the state’s terrestrial borders.

The distance of the new projects will leave only the tips of the nearest turbines visible from the coast, and only if visibility conditions are good.

New Jersey is already soliciting bids for a fourth round of wind projects. The BPU is expected to select from those projects in early 2025.

The state seeks to build 11,000 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2040.

Create a winter bucket list

t’s that time of the year when the snow is melting, the holidays are long behind us, and everyone is beginning to loathe the onset of the winter blues. Before we know it, spring will have sprung, and the kids will be itching for summer break. As the old saying goes, “The days are long, but the years are short.”

As a mom, I’ve seen the time fly by more quickly than I am comfortable with year after year. It seems I blink, and the kids are another year older.

In my futile effort to slow down time, I’ve gotten more intentional about not rushing through each season of life. As much as I love the summertime and look forward to warmer days, as time seems to slip through my fingers, I find myself holding on more and more to each precious moment and consciously trying not to rush my life.

We’ve all heard about summer bucket lists, but why wait for summer to have a little fun? Here are a few ideas for a “Winter 2024 Bucket List” with the family. Time is the most precious commodity we’ve got. I en-

courage you to take a pause from the hustle and bustle this week and try one of these family activities.

Homemade Valentine’s Day Cards

Spread the love with homemade Valentine's Day cards for everyone in your household. Break out the scissors and glue for a family craft night that’s literally filled with love. Make cards for your kids and invite them to make one for you or each other.

This is a great opportunity to put the technology down and spend a little uninterrupted family time. Put a twist on it with a “Secret Santa” Valentine’s Day style.

Here are a few conversation prompts for the moment: ● What are some things that you love about each other? ● Do you know what your love language is? ● What are some of your favorite memories together as a family? ● What are some ways that you can spread love and kindness to others in your community?

Healthy Bake Night

Santa’s cookies have long been devoured, and New Year’s resolu-

tions are underway. For many families, January is an opportunity to kick the junk food and return to a well-balanced diet after the holidays. That doesn’t have to mean baking nights are over! Plan a healthier bake night.

Get creative and maybe a little messy as you spend time together trying new recipes and sneaking chocolate chips.

Try these Healthy Chunky Monkey Oatmeal Bars from Eating Well: 1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line an 8-inch square baking dish with parchment paper.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of old-fashioned rolled oats, ½ cup peanut butter, two large mashed bananas, and three tablespoons of brown sugar. Mix well.

3. Fold in ¼ cup roughly chopped walnuts and ¼ cup of chocolate chips.

4. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and smooth out the top with a spatula.

5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the edges are golden brown and the center is set.

6. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10-15 minutes before slicing into bars.

2024 Goal Setting Night

If you haven’t set family goals and intentions yet for the year, there is no greater time than the present.

Family goal night is a perfect winter activity and opportunity to get everyone on the same page. Brainstorm a list of everything you’d like to accomplish as a family this year, from cleaning out the garage and hosting a yard sale to relationship improvements and academic goals.

Here are a few questions to get the conversation going: ● What is something we can learn together this year? ● What can we do to help our community? ● What are some ways we want to improve our home life? ● What clutter could we get rid of before spring? ● What is the biggest, craziest, scariest thing you want to accomplish in life?

5 reasons to love local fresh produce The Light with Raymond Tyler

I

am in a very personal battle with processed food. I have pretty much overcome sweets and desserts, but when it comes to pasta, cheeses and other goodies, the struggle is real.

One of the things that helps me crave less sugar and salt, and feel full, is eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

One of my favorite places to pick up fresh fruit is B.F Mazzeo, located at

601 New Road in Northfield.

Here are five reasons why I am at B.F Mazzeo’s almost daily.

1. Tons of Fresh Produce I honestly don’t recall how I came across B.F Mazzeo in particular, but I have always enjoyed produce from farmers markets.

Before I found out about fresh produce stores in our area, I had to buy enough for a week at a time. In most cases, the outdoor markets might be around for a couple of weeks to a month, and then I was back to scrounging for fresh food through larger chain stores.

B.F Mazzeo’s food is so fresh it almost tastes like I picked it myself. I go there about every other day because

I like food that has not been sitting as long as it normally does at the big chain grocery stores.

2. Red, Green and Seedless Grapes (and Sometimes Black) I could write a whole column on

grapes and rate them on taste, sweetness, size, packaging and more.

If I gave an award for grapes, the winner would be B.F Mazzeo’s red seedless grapes. These grapes are bursting with flavor and juice. I have never been able to eat just one (except the last one). The green seedless are equally juicy and a tad milder in flavor. I do not eat the black grapes every day, but they are delicious as well.

3. Tomatoes There was a time when I would eat tomatoes like apples. I would pick them off the vine and just start biting.

Sometimes I would use a little salt for extra flavor. Today I use tomatoes as a staple in salads, and as a delicious sandwich layer.

B.F Mazzeo offers more than 10 varieties of tomatoes, from the small grape tomatoes to vine-ripened to heirloom.

My favorite variety, which you almost never find in large chain stores, is the yellow tomatoes. The yellow tomatoes give my taste buds a jolt of earthy, natural goodness. I love to mix them with the traditional red tomatoes in my salads.

4. Soup’s On It took me a while to warm up to their soup because it’s not as salty as some other pre-made soups. For me the low-salt one is a winner. However, I take it home, warm it up and then season it with no-sodium seasoning options.

Absecon residents express concerns over ACUA odor

A

bsecon residents showed up to a town hall meeting with the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) to express their anger regarding the landfill’s odors invading their homes for over a month on Thursday, Jan.12.

City Council President Nick LaRotonda reached out to ACUA President Matt DeNafo, asking him to attend the meeting and explain how the site works, discuss what they’re doing to resolve the problem and answer questions citizens have.

“The ACUA’s history has always been as transparent as possible and open to the public, so I kind of jumped at the opportunity to be there even though it probably wasn’t going to be the most pleasant experience,” said DeNafo, who has held his position for seven months, but has been with the ACUA for over 16 years.

The ACUA facility on Delilah Rd. in Egg Harbor Township has been handling the trash for roughly 275,000 people in Atlantic County since 1992.

The facility as a whole is 365

acres, with the landfill taking up 102.

“We’re dealing with 32 years of trash, over 110 feet deep over 102 acres,” DeNafo said.

As trash decomposes at the landfill, gas is created… and it smells. DeNafo added the weather over the past few months hasn’t helped, saying rain and warm weather exacerbates the odor.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, landfill gas "is composed of roughly 50 percent methane (the primary component of natural gas), 50 percent carbon dioxide (CO2) and a small amount of non-methane organic compounds.”

That small amount of non-methane organic compounds is made of nitrogen, oxygen, ammonia, sulfides, hydrogen and various other gases.

The gas that produces the smell which Absecon residents are upset about is hydrogen sulfide, which has the foul smell of rotten eggs.

The ACUA uses gas control collection systems– an infrastructure

made of vacuum systems, blowers, flares, miles of pipeline and vertical wells– to convert it into renewable natural gas.

The vertical wells have a diameter of 100 feet and feature a 6-inch perforated pipe drilled into the trash, which can be anywhere from 65 to 110 feet deep.

A vacuum is then put on top and pulls the gas to keep it from escaping so that it can either be flared off or used for renewable natural gas or electricity.

More than 115 of these wells, which are imperative in collecting gas, will be in the landfill by the end of the month, DeNafo said.

In December, the ACUA planned to install 15 new gas wells. As of the day of the meeting, 14 wells had been installed and 13 were connected to the system.

Six additional wells are also currently being installed, totaling 21 wells set for the end of this month, which DeNafo hopes will significantly improve the odor in the coming

weeks.

He also said the ACUA will continue to monitor the air and remain in contact with City Council and residents.

The ACUA has a Landfill Odor Control section on its website, providing information on what it has done and continues to do in order to minimize and prevent the smell. There’s also a section to field complaints.

However, instead of hopping online, citizens were able to meet face-to-face at City Hall to air their grievances.

stench. When he finished, the locals who attended were invited up to the microphone to ask DeNafo their questions regarding the situation.

Absecon home-owner Tony Kucharski was first to speak, taking up about 30 minutes to express his thoughts and experience, which he insisted was “what everyone else was thinking.”

When gently interrupted five minutes in by LaRotonda, his fellow natives, who were standing in a line behind Kucharski, remained supportive of what he was saying, urging him to continue.

In addition to Kucharski, several Absecon residents mentioned that the odors have settled into their homes, garages, vehicles and more, even hours after the ACUA workers finished spreading and capping for the day.

Kucharski mentioned various symptoms he’s been experiencing, which include headaches, nausea and burning eyes among others that are known to occur after short-term exposure to elevated levels of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, according to New York State’s Department of Health.

Kucharski said he’s done everything he can to avoid moving from his home, even though he said it has been “absolute torture.” He’s been living about 2 miles from the landfill on

Yarmouth Avenue in Absecon for roughly 20 years.

During his, albeit lengthy, but relatable to Absecon citizens, recollection of his experience, Kucharski was interrupted a few times with rebuttals from ACUA solid waste division Vice President Gary Conover, which led the two to go back and forth.

While Conover, who also resides in Absecon, said he wasn’t experiencing this problem, DeNafo from Waterford Township empathized.

“We’re meeting all the requirements, but that doesn’t mean you’re not experiencing this,” he said.

DeNafo added that the gas developed a lot quicker in a larger volume than anticipated and stated he was there to help.

“These gases aren’t dispersing as much, as you mentioned. I’m glad you’re aware of that,” said Kucharski, 58. “The gases settle and collect here in town at suffocating levels, especially in the evening and morning hours.”

He added that even the workers at the landfill have to deal with the odor, “but they can wear respirators."

Kucharski concluded his time at the microphone by requesting that city representatives have 24/7 access to the ACUA. “Take us on a tour and answer our questions and requests,” he said.

Over the course of the meeting that lasted about 2.5 hours, residents acknowledged that a state as densely populated as New Jersey doesn’t really have a proper place to put a landfill without affecting homeowners.

Although tense at times, DeNafo said it went well, with attendees going up to him afterward, thanking him for listening to their concerns.

Wine: How sweet it is or isn’t

ast week, I discussed tannins, one of the four major components of wine. In this article, I’d like to tackle a second component: residual sugar (RS). In other words, the determining factor of what makes wine dry, sweet, or somewhere in between.

How does sugar get into wine?

Globally, most wine is the fermented juice of Vitis vinifera, the common grape vine. At bud break, when the grape first starts to form on the vine, the sugar level in the grape is extremely low and the acidity is very high. As the grape matures, the sugar level continues to increase and the acidity drops. Grapes growing in climates that allow for longer growing seasons, such as Southern Italy or California, will tend to be higher in sugar at harvest because the grapes have had longer to mature. You may wonder if these grapes produce sweet-

er wines then, right? Probably not. Once the grapes are harvested and crushed, the fermentation process begins.

During fermentation, yeast consumes much of the sugar in the juice and converts it into alcohol and carbon dioxide, turning the grape juice into wine. The result from grapes that had a higher sugar level at harvest is wine that has a slightly higher alcohol content. It is the sugar that remains in the wine after fermentation, known as residual sugar, that largely determines the dryness or sweetness of the wine.

The level of residual sugar (RS) remaining after fermentation varies based on the length of fermentation and the initial sugar level of the juice. Wines are identified as “sweet” if the RS is above 120 grams per liter, (12% RS). “Semisweet” wines have between 35 and 120 g/L, (3.5% to 12% RS). Wines with between 17 and 35 g/L (1.7% to 3.5% RS) are called “off-dry.” The majority of what we call “dry” wines fall between 0.6 and 17 g/L (.006% to 1.7% RS), while the driest wines, referred to as “bone dry,” have virtually no RS, between 0 and 0.6 g/L (0% to .006%).

This excellent winery produces a Dry Riesling, called Schloss Furstenberg Riesling Trocken (“trocken” means dry in German wine) with approximately 0.7% RS and 12% alcohol, and an off-dry, Bacharacher Kabinett Feinherb (feinherb means off-dry) with approximately 2.9% RS and 11% alcohol. The Schmitt Sohn Auslese Riesling is an even sweeter Riesling with a noticeably higher 10.5% RS level and an alcohol level of 8.5%. Notice that drier wines (low RS) have a higher alcohol level. This is because more of the sugar was converted to alcohol during fermentation.

To further illustrate how sugar levels are affected by the length of the growing season, let’s look at two Cabernet Sauvignons from two different U.S. wine regions. The Daou Cabernet Sauvignon, one of my favorite Cabs, is from Daou Family Estates, located in the very warm climate of Paso Robles, California, south of Napa and Sonoma. The growing season there is relatively long, allowing the grapes to reach full maturity and maximum sugar levels by harvest. The resulting wine is a delicious, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon at 14.5% alcohol. In contrast, Chateau St. Michelle from Columbia Valley, Washington produces an excellent dry, medium-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon at 13.5% alcohol. Columbia Valley is well north of Daou and has a growing season several weeks shorter than Paso Robles. A few weeks may not seem significant, but in terms of sugar levels, it can be a very big deal. Both of these wines are dry with approximately 0.9% RS. The aroma of wines can be quite deceptive when assessing dryness or sweetness. Take, for example, Muscadet

wine from the Loire Valley of France.

Muscadet Sèvre-et-Maine is the name of the subregion of Loire Valley where this wine is produced. The grape varietal used is Melon de Bourgogne, also known as Melon Blanc. This white wine has the fresh, crisp, light aroma of citrus and white flowers. At first sniff, one would expect it to be a relatively sweet wine.

Quite the contrary, though, as this is a bone-dry wine with less than 0.5% RS. However, it lacks the astringent effect that is often associated with dry wine.

In wine speak, astringency is the mouthfeel sensation of your tongue, palate, and/or gums “drying out” after contact with the wine. If you read last week’s article, you may recall that astringency is part of the tannin effect that generally occurs in red wines. However, as with the Muscadet, not all dry wines have that astringent effect. Try the Domaine de la Bregeonnette Muscadet to experience an energetic and refreshing dry white wine with great flavor and aroma.

One final note on this subject: As you enjoy your next glass of wine, consider what part of your tongue is stimulated.

Sweetness is detected right on the tip of your tongue. Dryness is usually sensed in the middle to back part of the tongue. Take a sip of a sweeter wine, such as a sweet Riesling or a Moscato d’Asti, followed by a drier wine like the Muscadet to see if you can feel, as well as taste, the difference. Volunteers help New Jersey eagles soar

ald eagles were almost wiped out from the state of New Jersey because of people. Now they are making a comeback because people have come to their rescue.

Although exact data is incomplete, New Jersey was down to approximately 20 nesting pairs of eagles in the period between the 1930s and 1950s, when they were considered a threat to farm animals.

By 1970 there was just one nesting pair in the whole state in Cumberland County, largely attributed to the pesticide DDT. The chemical was harmful to eagles because it made their egg shells too thin to be viable. Fortunately for the eagles, and the many fans of our majestic national bird, use of the pesticide was banned in the United States in 1972 and a path to recovery

was in sight.

Still, the eagle census remained at just one pair into the early 1980s.

That’s when a project was started by the NJDEP to import nestling eagles from Canada where the birds are not endangered. Over an eight-year period, 60 were brought to New Jersey and released.

Making the conservation and restoration efforts go has been the New Jersey Fish and Wildlife’s Endangered and Nongame Species Program, which teamed up with Conserve Wildlife Foundation New Jersey to keep track of the recovery process.

Kathleen Clark, chief of the Endangered and Nongame Species Program, said volunteers are essential to the success of the eagle recovery effort.

“The Bald Eagle Project is one of the wildlife programs in New Jersey that depends on dedicated and passionate volunteers,” Clark said. “Eagles nest throughout the state, and our network of volunteer nest monitors makes it possible to maintain our level of knowledge in NJ Fish and Wildlife about the population, its distribution, and success.”

The eagle revival has been steady.

By 2000 there were 23 pairs, and 48 by 2005. The trend continued, climb-

ing to 82 by 2010, 150 pairs in 2015, and 220 by 2020. There were 222 in 2021, 250 in 2022 and 255 in 2023.

Although bald eagles are no longer on the federal endangered species list, they retain special status in New Jersey as state endangered.

She said people who help out really get to know their eagles.

“People who ‘adopt’ an eagle nest to monitor spend time watching a pair of eagles from nest-building and courtship in January, through incubation, chick-rearing, and finally fledging in June-July,” Clark said. “Over time, nest monitors learn all the behaviors of eagles – what is normal and expected, and what might be unusual signals of nest disruption or failure. Volunteers who do this job over many years become experts in eagle behavior,” Observers have to be mindful not to disturb the birds.

“It’s all about watching from a distance so the eagles are completely uninterested in you. So it's not necessarily an up close and personal thing, but it's fascinating to watch and eventually understand their behaviors.”

She said people enjoy volunteering for a variety of reasons, including spending quiet time in nature, and feeling connected to a specific pair of eagles who tend to inhabit the same nest together for a number of years.

“There can be drama. An interloping adult tries to take over, chicks grow and become more visible to the

observer, and they get along or they don't, the adventure of the young eagles learning to fly.”

There is also the satisfaction of being involved in something important – interaction with people who share the same interests.

If you want to be part of the program, be prepared to commit time.

About an hour per week is recommended to monitor a nest between January through July. You will also need binoculars and a telescope due to the distance observers are required to maintain from the nests.

“Most people don't ask why they should volunteer; those who are interested in wildlife already have their reasons to join the project,” said Clark.

“I believe the reward is the time spent with eagles and understanding a bit about their lives.”

Clark has been involved in the project for 39 years, when she started with the NJFW Endangered and Nongame Species Program. She said it has 135 volunteers working in the field.

In 2023 the program monitored 286 nests, of which 255 were active (laid eggs) and the rest were territorial or “housekeeping,” which means they had a nest but did not lay eggs. That usually suggests a new pair.

There are about 23 pairs in Cape May County, and 16 in Atlantic County.

ince the day the Jersey Cow opened at 1600 Tilton Road in Northfield in 2022, sales have exceeded all expecta-

tions.

Just go by in the summer, fall, and spring at any time from 1 p.m. to closing, and you will find lines of people looking to buy their favorite custom flavor. Jersey Cow even defies the notion that outdoor ice-cream businesses can’t survive in the winter.

It’s open now and does very well. The demand is hot while the weather is cold.

The Sundance Kid’s Ocean City and Atlantic City roots

T

here’s a legend that Harry Longabaugh, the Sundance Kid, was from Atlantic City, which turns out to be partially true.

In the 1969 movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” there’s a scene where they get off a train in a desolate place in Bolivia and Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman), whose idea it was to go there, says, “It could be worse. You get a lot more for your money in Bolivia. I know, I checked it out.”

The Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) responds: “This might be the garden spot of the whole country. People may travel hundreds of miles just to get to this spot where we’re standing now. This might be the Atlantic City of all Bolivia for all we know.”

Cassidy says, “Look, now I know a lot more about Bolivia than you know about Atlantic City, New Jersey, I can tell you that.”

“Ah, ha! You do, huh?” says the Kid. “I was born there. I was born in New

Jersey. Brought up there.”

Donna and Paul Ernst, who lived in Ocean City at the time of the movie, saw the film and were startled when they read a National Geographic Magazine article titled, “The Outlaw Trail,” by Robert Redford, in which he mentions that the Sundance Kid’s real name was Harry Alonzo Longabaugh and that there is a town in Wyoming near Hole in the Wall Canyon where they hung out called Atlantic City.

She wrote to the magazine, whose historian sent her a detailed Longabaugh family history which showed that the Sundance Kid was the brother of Paul Ernst’s great-grandfather.

Paul remembered his grandpop telling the story of his “Uncle Harry,” who had a sidekick like Jesse James.

They robbed banks and gave money to poor people, and died in South America.

But then he said, “Nah, it isn’t anyone’s business. Forget it.”

His grandfather repeated the story a number of times over the years, but the family just thought he was out of his head. He was senile when he died in March, 1976. Unfortunate-

ly, Grandpop went to his grave with the details of the story of his “Uncle Henry,” the Sundance Kid. “He never told anyone all he knew,” said Donna, “and he died in silence, taking his memories with him.”

Paul and Donna were intrigued, however. They took up the trail of the outlaws and learned a lot over the following 20 years.

Harry Alonzo Longabaugh – aka the Sundance Kid, was not actually born in Atlantic City, as the movie suggests, but rather in Mont Clare, on the Schuylkill Canal in Pennsylvania.

According to Donna Ernst, “Because Mont Clare, Pennsylvania, is extremely small, historians thought it was actually Mont Clare, New Jersey.

Harry, the Sundance Kid, had a brother named Harvey who did live in Atlantic City, and is credited with helping to build the first boardwalk.

Since his brother had a place at the shore, Harry frequently visited him, and thus the Atlantic City connection was firmly established. Becoming increasingly fascinated by the subject, Donna and Paul began an intense search of family history to learn as much as they could about Harry Longabaugh, digging through old family and official records.

According to Donna, “We discovered that Conrad Longabaugh had immigrated to Philadelphia on December 24, 1772, aboard the brig Morning Star. He fought in the Revolutionary War and raised his family in Eastern Pennsylvania. His descendants eventually settled in Mont Clare, where, during the spring of 1867, Harry Alongzo Longabaugh was born.”

On August 30, 1882, the restless 14-year-old Harry left to go west with some cousins in a covered wagon,

eventually settling in Cortez, Colorado, where they lived for four years.

After working a cattle drive to Montana in 1886, he went to the Black Hills area where at Sundance, Wyoming, on February 27, 1887, he allegedly stole a light gray horse, a gun and a saddle from an employee of the VVV Ranch. After being caught, the 20-year-old attempted to escape by jumping off a train, but was recaptured.

The local Yellowstone Journal newspaper compared him to Jesse James and attributed some other local crimes to him. In response, from the Sundance Jail, he wrote a letter to the editor: “Contrary to the statement in the Journal, I deny having stolen any horses in Canada, or anyplace else, up to the time I was captured, at which time I was riding a horse which I bought and paid for. Nor had I the slightest idea of stealing any horses.

I am aware that some of your readers will say my statement should be taken or what it is worth, on account of the hard name which has been forced upon me, nevertheless it is true. As for my recapture by Deputy Sheriff Davis, all I can say is that he did his work well and were it not for him ‘playing possum’ I would now be on my way south, where I had hoped to go and live a better life.”

Harry Lonabaugh When Harry Lonabaugh got out of jail, the newspaper reported, “the kid has been released from Sundance,” and the Sundance Kid was born.

As Donna Ernst relates, “Stealing horses soon became robbing banks and holding up trains. Sundance and his pal Butch Cassidy were the lead-

ers of a loose-knit group of thieves better known as the Wild Bunch. Together these men were so skilled at escaping the law that the American Bankers Association and the Union Pacific Railroad hired the Pinkerton Detective Agency to capture them – at any cost.”

In the course of their two-decades-long quest to learn as much as possible about their renegade relation, Donna and Paul spent summer vacations traveling the West’s “Outlaw Trails,” where they visited banks their great-uncle once robbed and the cabins in the mountains where they hid out from the law.

They also found another Atlantic City connection – Atlantic City, Wyoming, one of the ghost towns near Hole-inthe-Wall Wyoming.

They trailed the Wild Bunch to Fort Worth, Texas, where the gang regrouped and had the famous photograph taken.

“Sundance and Butch saw their way of life changing before their eyes,” Donna relates. “Their fellow outlaws were all being killed or caught and jailed. It was time to move on, to take a trip to South America, and to start a new life. So the Wild Bunch met in Fort Worth for a goodbye celebration.

“One of the things they did was have their picture taken together, but unknown to them, the photographer placed the picture on display in his window, where it was seen by a Wells Fargo detective who recognized one of the men.”

With the law hot on their tail, says Donna, “the Sundance Kid returned home with his wife, Ethel Place, to see his family: brother Harvey, and his sisters Samanna and Emma, and meet his nieces and nephews. Then he explained his decision to move to South America and told his family he was going to settle down, buy a ranch and go straight.”

According to the reports of the Pinkerton Detectives who were after him, Sundance and Ethel were seen “frolicking” at the beach in Atlantic City, where the Sundance Kid’s brother, Harvey, lived at the time. “We suspect they visited Harvey’s family at the beach,” says Donna, “and at that time Grandpop was about 11 years old.”

According to the legend, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fled to South America and were the two American bandits killed in a shootout in San Vicente, Bolivia on Nov. 8, 1908.

In “Butch Cassidy, My Brother,” she claims her brother returned home years after he was reported killed in South America, and told the family that he last saw the Sundance Kid and Ethel Place at a bullfight in Mexico City.

In 1991, research historian Dan Buck, and anthropologist Clyde Snow exhumed the bodies of the “bandito Yankees,” killed and buried in San Vicente, Bolivia, and conducted DNA tests to match genetic material with descendants of Cassidy and Longabaugh. The negative results left the case open to historical debate as to

whether Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in South America, or merely encouraged the rumors of their death to get the Pinkertons off their trail and to start a new life outside of crime.

As a result of their research and travels, Donna Ernst wrote a book in 1992, “Sundance – My Uncle,” which chronicles the full story of Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, at least what could be learned today.

At a meeting of Western Outlaw Lawmen History Association, Donna Ernst said, “While I am not a professional writer, I don’t mind doing a lot of research. I have mixed my desire

for accuracy and my access to private family information together with the historical details of Sundance’s life. In the process I have found some new information, and have tried to correct a few inaccuracies.”

The Masons make a difference Ocean City Masonic Lodge to host fundraiser

he Ocean City Masons have been supporting people and organizations in the community since the chapter was established in 1897.

Personally, my first interactions with the Masons happened in 2017, when the Ocean City Masonic Lodge No. 171 donated $500,000 to Shore Medical Center to help those living with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. This donation was made possible thanks to a generous gift from Flora Baker to the Ocean City Masonic group in honor of her husband Benjamin, who was a member of the Ocean City Masons.

sons and thank them for supporting Shore Medical Center and many other causes. In addition to the aforementioned gift, the Masons continue to help fund patient care initiatives at Shore every year.

Shedding light on local history with matchbook covers A Look Back at Ocean City

A

souvenir is a must after a vacation in Ocean City. A matchbook cover was once the cheapest and smallest memory of a wonderful time spent in America’s Greatest Family Resort.

The small, but useful advertising gimmick spread like wildfire into the pockets, purses, and kitchen drawers of millions of Americans from the 1920s to the 1960s. Matchbooks saw a decline in popularity starting in the mid-1960s with the availability of disposable lighters and anti-smoking health campaigns.

In 1962, the federal government decreed that friction strips had to be moved from the outside-front of a matchbook to the outside-back, thus ending the need for the famous phrase, “CLOSE COVER BEFORE STRIKING.” With the strip in the front, failing to do so could allow a spark to light the other matches.

The matchbook covers were a favorite advertising give-away for restaurants. “BECK’S FOR SEAFOOD”

is credited with giving away the first restaurant matchbook cover in Ocean City. In 1936, the restaurant, located at the base of the 9th Street Bridge, advertised their platters and the cost, “ALL FOR 85 CENTS.” While most covers just used the front for getting their message out, some used the inside of the cover and even the matches themselves. In 1939, “HOGATE’S FOR SEAFOOD” (formally called Beck’s) had the most collectible of all the local matchbooks. The inside had a flap that showed a dinner platter and, when the flap was lifted, a description of

what the platter included for 85 cents.

Even the matches included artwork.

The Flanders Hotel receives the credit for the first local hotel to advertise on a matchbook cover. People attending the grand opening of the swimming pools in 1929 received, “THE FLANDERS; 250 ROOMS & BATHS” matchbooks.

Even the Ocean City Public Relations Department advertised on a matchbook cover in 1950: “AMERICA’S GREATEST FAMILY RESORT.” Check your junk drawer and you’ll probably find a souvenir matchbook.

How The Three Stooges conquered Atlantic City

I

n 1973, I was a journalism student at Temple University.

Like many journalism students there at the time, I had hopes of landing a position at the Temple University News. But the clippings I had from my high school newspaper writings meant nothing to the news’ powers that be at the time. I was unceremoniously told to wait in line if I

wanted any kind of position at the news.

Maybe my clips were lousy, but having been in the entertainment business for a dozen years by then, I decided to use whatever show biz “chutzpah” I had to get the newspaper’s attention.

Back then I was playing drums with Tommy DeNoble, a great singer who made his name as one of the “regulars” on Dick Clark’s “American Bandstand” television program, and a real gentleman who left us much too soon.

DeNoble’s full-time job was film director for what was then WTAF Television/ Channel 29 in Philadelphia. In 1973, WTAF was broadcasting the old “Three Stooges” shorts every day.

I had recently read somewhere that Moe Howard of “The Three Stooges” would be doing his one-man show at Philadelphia’s TLA Cinema on South Street, and that he would be visiting the WTAF studios to publicize the show.

The wheels began to turn. Surely an interview with the legendary Moe of The Three Stooges would help get my foot in the door at Temple’s newspaper.

I asked DeNoble, a show business veteran who had no fear, if he would ask Moe during Moe’s visit to the station, about doing an interview with me.

DeNoble, who could charm anyone, came through. The interview with Moe was set on a weekday afternoon in the third-floor dressing room of the rickety old TLA.

I knocked on the door and behold, Moe Howard, then a white-haired, 76-year-old senior citizen, answered the door.

I introduced myself by telling him that I watched "The Stooges" on television every day since I was 8 years old, and that I saw them in person at Philadelphia’s old Latin Casino in 1959.

“You’ve got a lot of courage, son,” was Moe’s reply. I addressed him as “Mr. Howard.” He insisted I call him Moe. I was determined to ask questions that, to my knowledge, had been rarely asked.

“How long have you been doing a single?” was my first question. That floored him, as he told me almost everyone who had ever interviewed him had asked the same thing: “Did you guys ever get hurt while you were poking eyes and hitting each other on the head?”

Then we were off and running.

He explained that the act had been retired since Larry Fine had a stroke three years earlier, but that he was enjoying his one-man shows

and occasional appearances on the Philadelphia-based “Mike Douglas Show.”

He revealed, among other things, that The Stooges resented Lou Costello of Abbott and Costello fame, because they believed that Costello got his comedy shtick directly from The Stooges’ Curly Howard. He also voiced his dissatisfaction with Columbia Pictures, who kept the team in two-reel film shorts, as opposed to Abbott and Costello, Laurel and Hardy, and other comedy teams who were making feature-length films.

The interview took an interesting turn when Moe started asking about me and my interests.

I told him of my life-long interest in jazz and he asked me if I had ever heard of Stan Kenton. When I told him I was a major Kenton fan, he said he was going to tell me a story he had never publicly told before.

It seems that Moe Howard, if you can believe it, was a major jazz fan and a major Kenton fan. He became a

He was so taken with the Kenton sound that he told the Steel Pier’s George Hamid that the Pier absolutely had to book Stan Kenton’s band to appear on the same bill with The Stooges during The Stooges’ Aug. 24 to Sept. 1, 1941 shows at the Pier.

“I told George Hamid that if he didn’t book Kenton, he wouldn’t get The Stooges,” Moe explained. The Three Stooges, at that time one of the biggest acts in the business, were simply too big to refuse.

Wow. Stan Kenton and The Three Stooges. Who would have thought?

Note: The Kenton band returned to the Steel Pier in the summer of 1951 and 1953. And on July 1, 1966, Kenton’s band played the Pier’s Marine Ballroom, while the top-billed act in the Music Hall was The Rolling Stones.

In line with the beginning of my career as a journalist, those running the Temple University News were sufficiently impressed with my “Stooges exclusive” story that I was asked to be on staff and contribute anything I wanted, at any time I wanted.

As for The Three Stooges, it’s true

that most men love them, and most women hate them. Like “I Love Lucy,” “The Three Stooges” comedy shorts are shown on television, somewhere in the world, every day of the year. And some 50 years after Moe, Larry and Curly – and Curly’s various successors – performed as a team, the boys, as they are still called, are as popular as ever.

Currently, there are nearly 20 books about The Three Stooges in print, with two on Shemp Howard on the way.

Among the most impressive is “A Tour De Farce: The Complete History of The Three Stooges on the Road,” a 758-page work that details, for the first time, virtually every personal appearance the comedy team made.

Written by suburban Philadelphia native Gary Lassin, who has long served as Three Stooges Museum executive director (The Stoogeum in Ambler, Pa.) and The Stooges’ Fan Club president (2,000 members and counting), the book is the result of 20 years of research. For those familiar only with the team’s televised film

shorts and latter-day films, is a real eye-opener.

The Stooges never made big money from their films and were not legally entitled to royalties when their famed film shorts were first sold to television in late 1958. The boys made their real money from the 1,500 in-person stage shows in which they starred over the years.

When I first heard about Lassin’s book – and recalled the story Moe Howard told me about The Stooges’

bringing Stan Kenton to Atlantic City – I got to thinking about the team’s association, if there was one, with Atlantic City through the years.

Lassin, needless to say, had all the details. Aside from the personal appearances, Larry Fine and his wife, Mabel, lived at Atlantic City’s President Hotel, at Albany Avenue and the Boardwalk, for years. It seems Mrs. Fine detested cooking and housekeeping, and preferred hotel living – first at the President, and later at Hollywood’s Knickerbocker Hotel.

The Stooges’ formal association with Atlantic City came by way of their first Steel Pier appearance on July 24, 1936. The following year, from Aug. 21 through Aug. 27, the team moved over to the Pier’s competitor, Million Dollar Pier.

was a part of the popular “George White’s Scandals” touring review that played at the theater on Atlantic City’s Garden Pier.

A Labor Day Weekend series of shows back at the Steel Pier in 1941, this time with the Kenton band on the bill, was a time Moe Howard always remembered vividly.

“The one I will never forget is that weekend at the Steel Pier in Atlantic City,” Moe recalled years later. “We usually did 28 minutes in our theater routine, but that weekend at the Steel Pier, we did 12 shows a day, so we had to cut our act down to seven minutes, which was just enough time to enter on stage, tell three jokes, and do two pieces of stage business. It was really a horrible situation. Lunch was a sandwich backstage with a glass of orange juice and the same for dinner, as there was no time to leave the dressing room.”

Such was the price of popularity.

A summer, 1942, Steel Pier appearance of Moe, Larry and Curly was the team’s last until 1959.

Vaudeville comics like The Stooges, Abbott and Costello, Eddie Cantor and The Ritz Brothers had been staples of Steel Pier stage shows for years, but by the late 1940s, Steel Pier bookings in the Music Hall began to focus more on music than comedy.

The Stooges and Abbott and Costello were busy making films in Hollywood, and the hottest comedy team around was Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, an “adult” act who worked in Atlantic City exclusively at The 500 Club. There just weren’t a lot of family comedy acts appropriate for the Steel Pier around by the late 1940s and 1950s.

George Hamid made an exception on Aug. 9 through Aug. 15 of 1959, when he again booked The Three Stooges – with Curly-Joe DeRita in place as the third stooge – into the Music Hall. Hamid almost had to.

Since the Stooges’ old film shorts were released to television in 1958, the veteran slapstick trio, who were considered washed-up by then, made one of the most miraculous comebacks in the history of show business.

Kids saw these old films on television programs like Sally Starr’s “Popeye Theater,” and the youngsters just had to see these three human cartoons in person.

Moe and Larry broke in the new stooge, comedy veteran Joe DeRita, and hit the personal appearance road yet again, to places like Philadelphia’s Latin Casino, The Holiday House outside of Pittsburgh, and state fairs and theaters all over the country.

And yes, they were no longer making two-reel film shorts. Between

1959 and 1970, the team made or appeared in nine feature films, made dozens of television guest spots, starred in a live action/animated television series, were featured in television commercials, and were part of a merchandising barrage that included Stooges’ comic books, recordings, trading cards, etc.

The Three Stooges had finally attained the most elusive quality in the entertainment industry: respect. And George Hamid had to have them at the Steel Pier. Those who were there remember nothing but packed houses.

They returned for their final Pier appearance a year later – from June 26 through July 2, 1960 – in tandem with a blockbuster booking that starred Ricky Nelson. The Three Stooges, in all likelihood, never appeared in Atlantic City again. George Hamid probably couldn’t afford them.

The Three Stooges continued, with a considerable amount of success until 1970, when a stroke put Larry Fine out of action.

Moe Howard made a number of single appearances all over the country and on television through 1975, and even Larry Fine did a few in the Hollywood area when his health allowed. When the act “retired” in 1970, Curly-Joe DeRita tried booking something called “The New Three Stooges,” but it just didn’t work.

In 1975, Moe Howard announced that The Three Stooges would get back together again, with Emil Sitka (“hold hands, you lovebirds”) in place of the ailing Larry Fine, and Joe DeRita again appearing as Curly-Joe. A film project, something called “Blazing Stewardesses,” was announced, but Moe kept putting the start date off. He passed away on May 4, 1975, and Larry Fine died some four months earlier on Jan. 24. The Ritz Brothers appeared in the film in place of Moe, Emil and Curly-Joe. A journalist has got to start somewhere, and there’s usually someone to thank for facilitating this start. In my case, it wasn’t a great editor or novelist or college professor who helped get me going in this business.

It was Moe of The Three Stooges.

s part of a new history of Tony Mart’s, “The Legacy of Tony Mart,” we have put together a list of more than 130 entertainers who performed during the 38 years of good times at the legendary Somers Point nightclub.

Over the past several weeks, we have been remembering some of the greatest and most musically important entertainers and groups that ever played at Tony Mart’s.

We have our favorites, but readers are also invited to weigh in. Send your comments and emails to: tonymartpresents@gmail.com. We will reminisce about them in the trivia segments at our shows. We look forward to including your memories in the book, along with comments from friends, family, and former patrons.

Ricky and the Rockets

In 1965 there was a group called The Lively Ones featuring the Identicals: Three guys in the band with twins upfront. They were popular and successful that year, but no one thought that their bass player, Jeff Troy, would come back as a star of several seasons in the ’70s.

Tony Mart created Ricky and The Rockets with Jeff Troy when he returned with a professional, but non-descriptive cover band. With all of the classic routines, including rolling cigarettes up in the short-sleeve shirt, Ricky and The Rockets were tremendous stars of the early ’70s, which helped maintain Tony Mart’s as a popular party and dance venue.

Full House

Bobby Hunter was the lead singer in this band. He often said that in the fall of 1969, he played his first professional gig at Tony Mart’s.

Eventually joining up with the great Kenny Jeremiah from The Soul Survivors, this was a beloved, popular, entertaining band that played several years at Tony Mart’s, and many years all

over the Jersey Shore and elsewhere. It was a great horn band which eventually became the Jeremiah Hunter Band and ultimately, just as great and popular as Full House. It’s one of the wonderful Jersey Shore regional stories.

One For All

For most of the local patrons, especially the “Tri-City Burnouts,” this was probably the most revered and remembered band of 1978 and 1979.

An intriguing and entertaining chapter in the history of Tony Mart’s, One For All was the reason that Tony Mart’s rose like a phoenix from the ashes after almost being sold in a shaky real estate deal in the spring of ’78.

With the full percussion ensemble of Tony Galante and a killer, three-piece horn section starring the incredible Sammy Dyson on trombone and Ray Sydnor on saxophone, this group did it all, from Earth Wind & Fire and Bill Withers, to “Disco Inferno” and an astoundingly hot, mesmerizing version of Ralph McDonald’s “Calypso Breakdown” from the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack.

In the summer of ’78, this was the band that brought the biggest crowds of the last 10 years of Tony Mart’s and made Sunday nights the sexiest, sweatiest, most pounding and panting ladies’ night ever seen at the Mart. It was an incredible summer of ribaldry and fun!

Shotgun and Alien

After the summer of ’78, the Mart never really hit its stride in any summer except ’81 when the sexy and exciting Shotgun, the rage of the Main Line, led by the sultry Lenora, performed the emerging sounds of punk, rock, and new wave, especially Chrissie Hynde & The Pretenders, Blondie, Joan Jett, and groups like The Talking Heads and Elvis Costello.

They performed a signature medley of rockin’ tunes by The Kinks with our favorite being “Low Budget,” which epitomized the experience at The Mart in the last year of strong business. Shotgun and a tribute band called Alien brought hundreds of young people up from Cape May where many of the well-heeled students had drifted with their families.

On Tuesday nights, Alien performed the “Resurrection of Jim Morrison and The Doors,” in which they brought their frontman into Tony Mart’s in a white coffin.

Tony Mart’s family is forever grateful to Shotgun for the fabulous performances that carried The Mart into the last great summer, the summer of ’81.

Bob Campanell and The Shakes

Throughout this list of the very best

entertainers in Tony Mart’s history, there is a consistent theme of famous, world-class, multi-award-winning, and million-selling recording artists, including performers, like Del Shannon and Oliver.

In the category of the very best to ever play at The Mart and not become famous, there are some really great ones, including Gunther’s Bus and One For All. Bob Campanell was one such performer.

Bob Campanell was one of the greatest performers to play the Jersey Shore and Tony Mart’s. As the star performer in The Shakes, he was powerful with a great voice and vocal ability.

He is deserving of recognition consistent with that of the greatest Jersey Shore/East Coast rockers like Springsteen, Southside Johnny, Gary US Bonds, and our magnificent friend, John Cafferty and Beaver Brown with Michael “Tunes” Antunes.

After Tony Mart’s closed, Bobby became so much a part of the Somers Point legacy music scene, including the AtlantiCare Concerts on the Beach in Somers Point, which he was rightfully referred to as our “Somers Point Rock ‘n Roll Icon.”

A world-class singer, a brilliant, charismatic and emotional performer, Bobby was a gifted songwriter and phenomenal rhythm guitarist. His band, The Shakes, were extremely popular, especially at Meral’s in Margate and all over the Jersey Shore. He was an important

rock and roller in Asbury Park as well.

In the entire legacy of the music of Tony Mart’s, there is no one more deserving of superlatives, recognition and appreciation than the great Bob Campanell. We loved him and everyone loved The Shakes, whose drummer, Frank, was a pleasure with whom we always enjoyed working.

‘Eddie and The Cruisers’

As we often say, there was no real band named Eddie and The Cruisers.

They were a group of actors with one true great rock star, Michael “Tunes” Antunes, who made a movie in May that carried The Mart into and through its final season of ’82.

Some of the greatest music ever written by John Cafferty and The Beaver Brown Band made the movie filmed at Tony Mart’s. It’s truly an important part of rock ‘n roll history.

These are the greatest, but there are many more bands with interesting stories that will appear in the book, “The Legend of Tony Mart’s,” which is being written now in real-time.

King’s Pub continues evolution of Tennessee Avenue, Orange Loop

T

here was a time in my life when my home away from home was the Pic-A-Lilli Pub. It was the diviest of dive bars in Atlantic City – or anywhere for that matter.

It was the kind of place where you pretended to ignore the broken bar stools, the caving popcorn ceiling, the cracked floor tiles, the filthy walls, the broken pinball machine, the dodgy people who frequented it and the most horrific bathroom one could ever encounter.

But, damn, those wings were good! The beers were cheap. The jukebox rocked like it was a time machine from the ’70s and ’80s.

And they were open late - real late …

sometimes 24 hours.

The Pic was the perfect nightcap when the partying got hard and you needed a good, greasy meal to soak up the suds and make sure you even felt worse the next day. And when my buddy The Kipster ran the Tennessee Avenue joint, there was no better place for me – and my fellow comrades in The Fat Boy Beach Club – to go whenever we had a craving for those sweet yet savory wings and a wooden bowl of cheese fries.

So, when the Pic closed its doors about two years ago, it was a sad day for anyone who ever frequented the joint. But, let’s be honest: The Pic hasn’t been The Pic since The Kipster parted ways there more than five years ago. The food went downhill, and if it was possible, so did the facilities and the clientele. It wasn’t The Pic I fell in love with when I came to the shore 30 years ago.

When it was announced a group of entrepreneurs were going to take over The Pic, there were rumors it was going to be everything from a pizza joint to a Greek restaurant.

None of them were true.

The King’s Pub debuted a couple months ago, and I am happy to say it is exactly everything - if not more – than I could ever hope the former Pic-A-Lilli would be. (For the record, I still love to go The Pic in Shamong to get my wing fix.)

In fact, King’s Pub is not only a perfect addition to Tennessee Avenue and the increasingly fantastic, buzzworthy Orange Loop, but King’s Pub can easily fill the void in my heart that I once had for The Pic, and it will undoubtedly be the place where I hang when I am not at Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall, which I proudly serve as co-owner.

What is King’s Pub

So, what is King’s Pub? It’s basically a dive bar with fantastic food.

On first look, you realize not a whole lot has changed structurally or even from a design and color standpoint, which still boasts reds and oranges and a classic wood bar.

But what you will immediately notice is that it’s first and foremost CLEAN. The place is spotless, including the kitchen where I refused to enter when it was The Pic because I knew I probably wouldn’t eat those fantastic wings because of its deplorable condition. The kitchen is so clean and meticulous – including the once disgusting walk-in refrigerator – that even Gordon Ramsay would wipe his white glove over the surfaces and find nothing to curse about.

The bathrooms, which once didn’t even have toilet seats – forcing women to squat over the bowl – have been completely remodeled and are welcoming to guests.

Every surface in the bar from the walls to the floors to the new wood ceilings have either been painted or entirely replaced. The air conditioning works again … and so does the heat.

And much-needed extra refrigeration and storage was added outside.

In other words, King’s Pub still has the feel of a dive bar, but it doesn’t possess any of the negative elements of its former self.

So, what is the impetus of this major transformation?

Friendship, of course.

The only ways the former Pic was going to become something special again was if it got ripped down and replaced entirely with something new, or if a group of passionate restaurateurs got together and were determined make a sunken ship float again.

The latter happened when longtime friends Michael Ghabryal, Dmitrijs Ostrovskis and David Wong reunited.

All three hospitality workers met each other at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, where Ghabryal and Ostrovskis still work as servers at Angeline by Michael Symon.

Wong, who serves as executive sous chef at Resorts Casino Hotel, kept in touch with his former Borgata mates and ran into Ghabryal, who invited him to have lunch at Ghabryal’s other business, Don Maco’s Pizza & Grill, a tiny Boardwalk pizza stop between Tennessee Avenue and St. James Place.

“We kept in touch over the years, and when I went to visit Michael, we started talking, and I was giving him some menu advice and told him to take advantage of his prime real estate on the Boardwalk by adding some things like lobster roll or what-

ever,” said Wong, who left Borgata and has been happily working at Resorts since 2011. “Then he said, ‘There’s something I want to show you.’ And we walked over to the former Pic, and everyone was sweating their butts off because the air conditioning wasn’t working, and they were in there resurfacing and doing all of this work transforming the place. Michael and Dmitrijs already owned it, and they were just figuring out what it would become.”

After more conversations - and menu advice from Wong - Ghabryal and Ostrovskis invited the chef to join them as a consultant.

“I was like, ‘No way, man, I love my job at Resorts, and I’m not going anywhere,’” Wong said. “And they countered with, ‘You can do both. We are doing the same thing. We aren’t leaving our jobs either.’ So, with three people splitting responsibilities and everyone sticking to their day jobs, I was intrigued. As long as I was able to stay at Resorts and make that my priority, then I was in. And it’s been great so far.”

Since the invitation was accepted, the trio named it King's Pub to brand the place as an upgraded pub experience fit for a king, opened its shiny new digs to the public late in 2023, and have made quite an impression locals and tourists thanks to Wong’s

stellar food and an evolving beverage program spearheaded by Ghabryal and Ostrovskis.

“Every day I walked in there over the summer and into the fall, the transformation was ridiculous,” Wong said. “And that transformation and evolution continues every day.

I handle the back of the house with my crew, and they handle the front of the house with their crew and making sure the place looks great. It’s been a tremendous learning experience that has been so rewarding.”

Food and drinks fit for a …

If anyone has had the pleasure of eating Wong’s food, you know you are in for something special.

King’s Pub gives Wong the ability to showcase his culinary ability on a more casual level than he normally does.

The small menu will eventually grow, but for its opening, Wong wanted to make sure he and his staff could execute everything brilliantly out of what is one of the smallest restaurant kitchens you will find in Atlantic City.

There are four seafood dishes, two salads, a half dozen sandwiches, and wings and tenders, of course.

“We knew that we had to have great wings and tenders because we are in the location of one of the most famous wing places ever,” Wong said.

“The menu is small, but we want to feel prideful about everything coming out of that kitchen. It’s better to have a small menu where everything is great as opposed to a big menu that’s crap.”

King’s Pub definitely delivers on that front.

Not only do they offer Lilly sauce in homage to The Pic’s deliciously sweet yet savory masterpiece, but King’s Pub offers eight others.

Standouts include Green Goddess, usually known as a salad dressing with mayo, sour cream, chervil, chives, tarragon and lemon juice that has become super popular on social media; Mango Habanero, the spiciest of the bunch and my favorite that we tried thanks to its perfect balance of heat and sweet; Dragon Breath Buffalo, a more traditional wing sauce that doesn’t pack as much heat as its name suggests; and Apple Bourbon, Wong’s personal favorite that he hopes becomes King’s Pub signature sauce.

“I think the Apple Bourbon represents what we do here at King’s Pub, which is make everything from scratch in small batches so everything

is perfect,” Wong said. “For wings, diversity in flavors is what it’s all about. We have a small menu, but we have nine sauces, so you can have a lot of different experiences with just our wings and tenders. But the Apple Bourbon will feature apples that we will source differently every month from regions where apples are in season, kind of like how Five Guys tells you where their potatoes are from. I came across this amazing apple that we use at Capriccio at Resorts called Mountain Rose out of Oregon. When you cut it, the inside looks like a deep red grapefruit. So, I am going to learn a lot about apples. And then we take

a full bottle of bourbon – usually Maker’s Mark – and a whole gallon of apple cider and brown sugar and a little bit of soy and heat and garlic and reduce that for three hours. It takes that long to do it right, or else it burns, or it becomes bitter if you rush it. And we will only make small batches of it and make it every other day because I know it will be perfect every time if we make it like that. No shortcuts.”

Wong also doesn’t take any easy routes when it comes to his burgers and sandwiches.

The King’s Burger offers a custom beef blend patty topped with smoked brisket that cooks between three and four hours, and then tops it off with some frizzled onions on a Formica brioche roll. The brisket can be found alternatively as a BBQ Brisket sandwich with the frizzled onions, Colby cheddar and coleslaw. Even better is the Squire Burger, which features maple pepper bacon, cheddar and a homemade shallot marmalade that offers sweetness, tartness and allaround deliciousness.

“We use self-rising flour, no egg, a little tempura batter and then put it back in the flour and drop it slowly in the fryer,” Wong said. “It’s similar to Popeye’s in a way because we mimic that tempura batter. That beautiful chicken breast comes out great because all of that moisture is trapped inside the flour and batter, and it cooks relatively quickly, which is nice.”

The two salads are a Caesar and a Steakhouse Wedge, and I can’t urge

you enough to choose the latter. With iceberg lettuce, a homemade buttermilk blue cheese to die for, thick and crispy bacon, cherry tomatoes and crispy tobacco onions, it’s better than most casino steakhouse wedge salads that charge a third more.

Seafood plays a role at King’s Pub, particularly Wong’s crab cake – available as a basket with coleslaw and french fries or a sandwich with tartar aioli and Romaine lettuce, and in the summer, fresh Jersey tomato.

“It’s a mix of super lump and claw meat, because the claw meat is where the flavor comes from,” Wong said.

“We use egg yolk, breadcrumbs, panko, lemon, Worcester and Tabasco,

and we grill in on the la plancha. It’s simple, but people really like it.”

There’s also fried scallops and shrimp, but Wong suggests seafood lovers try the Ocean Catch special, especially when it’s the fritto misto featuring fried calamari, shrimp, broccoli rabe and cherry peppers.

“That’s just a taste of what I want to do seasonally in the kitchen when it comes to seafood,” Wong said. “That part of the menu will really evolve.

I would definitely like to see us do some tapas with lighter, smaller bites in the future, too.”

As for the cocktails, beer and wine selection, Ghabryal and Ostrovskis have put together a very nice Scotch, bourbon and whiskey list, and they already have nearly a dozen tequilas, an impressive list that the duo will expand on dramatically in the future.

They also put together a very nice cocktail menu. The Paloma with Patron Silver Tequila, agave, Q Grapefruit Soda and fresh lime with a salt rim is possibly the best Paloma we ever had; the Strawberry Lemonade with ALB Vodka, strawberry lemonade and mint is a great seller; the King’s Pub Old Fashioned with Elijah Craig Small Batch Bourbon, Michter’s Single Barrel Rye, Demerara and bitters will please those looking or a stiff one; and the Revolver with Angel’s Envy Bourbon, Shanky’s Whip Coffee Liqueur and bitters is a great after-meal drink.

It’s a good sign that people feel safe and want to explore what we have here. We are stretching the boardwalk experience all the way down Tennessee Avenue.

Jordan’s Journey fundraiser draws a crowd despite weather Tune In, Turn On

ordan’s Cancer Journey Fundraiser a Success: The first snow event of 2024 didn’t deter a large, diverse crowd from attending Jordan’s Cancer Journey Fundraiser last Saturday night at both the Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall and Rhythm and Spirits in Atlantic City’s Orange Loop district.

“Thank you all for taking the time to support my family in our time of need,” said area music/420 lifestyle events Norstep Productions promoter Stephen Weiss who, along with promoting partner Noranne Thompson, are the parents of area teen Jordan Thompson, whom the fundraiser benefitted.

“But it was far more than (just) a fundraiser,” Weiss said. “It was a

family reunion. The Weiss family was in attendance. And there were friends and family from every single step on this Norstep journey in attendance and that was beyond words. And in all of that beauty was the most beautiful smile I’ve ever seen on my baby girl’s face. I love you Jordan. I love you Noranne.

“Approximately five thousand dollars was raised at the fundraiser, not including all the donations received prior,” Weiss added. “It takes a village, so special thanks also to Jim Paynter, Randy Paynter, Vinny Marone (event flier), Angela Volz, Colleen Nola, Larry Heid, Melissa Lahner Reichman, Michelle Tomko, David J. ‘Motown Forever’ getting ready to boogaloo into Borgata

here’s no question that Atlantic City audiences adore the music that emanated from Detroit in the 1960s and ’70s. From the earliest days of legal casino gambling, legends like Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations and The Four Tops have been—and continue to be—gaming-hall headliners. And even when those pop icons aren’t physically onstage, there’s a good chance some lounge act or other is performing songs from the Motown Records catalog.

And then there’s producer Allen Valentine, who staged the “Motor City Live” revusical at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City in 2018 and 2020 and gave it a new name—“Motown Forever”-- when he took it to Bally’s Atlantic City in the summer of ’21.

Once again, the AyCee-based impresario is counting on casino audience’s can’t-get-enough love of the music for a “Motown Forever” reboot, which is scheduled to run Sunday afternoons from Feb. 18 through April 28 at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa. Despite the new venue, Valentine is definitely in don’t-fix-it-if-it-ain’tbroke mode.

“The cast is about 20 percent new performers,” he offered during a recent phone chat. “And we changed about five songs.”

It’s not that Valentine is being lazy about the content. Instead, he reasoned, his hands are pretty much tied by audience expectations.

“With Motown, you've got to keep in the iconic songs [by] the Tempts, the Tops, the Supremes; you want to keep all those songs in there. I think that's what people are expecting and we want to deliver that. So we changed out a few things just to make the show a little bit more up-tempo.”

Supersonic pacing is a hallmark of Valentine’s musicales (including such recent programs as “Dance To the Music—A ‘60s Celebration,” “’80s Live” and “Disco Inferno”). When asked why he feels his shows need to keep the pedal to the metal virtually all the

time, his reply included a reminder that all of his casino productions are primarily marketing tools designed to lure gamblers to a property.

“I've been doing this for so long that I've learned that if there are too many slow spots, the energy in the room feels like it drops a little bit,” he explained. “And so I'm constantly trying to keep that energy up; I feel that a big part of my job is to whip the audience into a great mood, and then send them out onto the casino floor with really high energy.

“I think the customers who see a show that is really entertaining is an audience that's more apt to maybe stick around on the casino floor longer than people who see a show that was maybe low-energy, or not that entertaining, and just go home afterwards. So I think a big part of my job is to deliver to the casino executives a show that is basically putting people in a great mood as they're leaving the theater and walking out to the casino floor.

“And I've learned that a higher-energy approach to these shows delivers that result.”

Of course, “Motown Forever,” isn’t the only presentation on Valentine’s 2024 to-do list. He’s in discussion with casinos in Atlantic City and elsewhere, and is already planning the 11th annual edition of Borgata’s “The Burlesque Show,” which will debut in early May and run every Thursday night through October. He promised that, unlike “Motown Forever,” there will be a significantly different look for the naughty, bawdy and gaudy adults-only rave-up that has become an Atlantic City show-biz institution.

“This year we're throwing a lot of new stuff into it,” he said. “We didn't set out to do that; we thought maybe 50 percent new. But we just decided to up it and have a lot more new material.”

It's Human Trafficking Prevention Month

t’s January, which means it's Human Trafficking Prevention Month. According to the U.S. Department of State, more than 27.6 million people around the world are subjected to human trafficking.

What is human trafficking?

Human trafficking refers to perpetrators using force, fraud or coercion to exploit someone to perform labor or services. Here are two types of human trafficking: 1. Forced labor This is also referred to as labor trafficking. Some nonprofits and advocacy groups use the term “modern slavery”. This form of trafficking involves perpetrators exploiting people to profit off of their labor.

Debt slavery is one form of this, in which a trafficker withholds someone’s pay until they have paid off a debt. Traffickers also usually confiscate people’s passports or ID cards so they cannot flee.

Domestic servitude is another type of forced labor, in which a victim is forced to work in a private residence. The perpetrators often isolate them and control access to food, housing and transportation.

Foreign domestic workers are particularly vulnerable since language and cultural barriers may prevent them from getting help.

2. Sex trafficking This term refers to perpetrators using force, fraud, or coercion to exploit someone for commercial sex. It also refers to the involvement of minors in the commercial sex industry.

Sex trafficking can occur in a variety

of places, including private homes, hotels, and on the internet.

Even if consent is initially given, it is considered human trafficking if perpetrators go on to use force, fraud or coercion to exploit a victim for subsequent commercial sex acts.

Child sex trafficking is one form of sex trafficking. Minors cannot legally consent to commercial sex acts.

What are some indicators of human trafficking?

1. Employees living with their employer.

2. Signs of physical abuse.

3. Employers who hold employees’ identity documents.

4. Workers who are unpaid or paid very little.

5. Youth under the age of 18 in the commercial sex industry.

Who is at risk?

Risk factors for human trafficking include recent immigration or relocation, mental health struggles, and substance abuse. Homeless youth and youth who have been in foster care are also at risk.

AVANZAR, a local nonprofit, supports people under the age of 21 who have been subjected to human trafficking.

AVANZAR’s Dream Free program provides holistic services for these individuals.

Claudia Ratzlaff, CEO of AVANZAR, when asked what signs of human trafficking to look for, commented: “Certainly homeless youth are very vulnerable… A youth that doesn’t have support. Probably has a difficult family life or a nonexistent family life or is coping with their internal struggles or struggles with the family and, you know, doesn’t see options and is vulnerable to predators.”

Ratzlaff adds, “It's a lot with people, of course, who want to come into the US as well. Their lives are very much in danger.

It's about individuals who don’t have secure employment and go from community to community and are just vulnerable.”

Immigrants and undocumented people are often targeted by human traffickers.

How can I help?

Here are ways you can help end human trafficking and help victims: 1. Educate yourself about it.

There are a lot of conspiracy theories about human trafficking rings, and the facts about human trafficking can get lost in the process. Look for information about human trafficking from sources you can trust, such as reputable nonprofit organizations and government websites. I recommend checking AVANZAR’s website to see how trafficking affects our local community and how to best respond to it.

2. Organize a fundraiser.

In college, I helped fundraise for a global NGO called International Justice Mission, which combated human trafficking by working with law enforcement entities. For a more local option, consider donating to AVANZAR. AVANZAR is a nonprofit based in South Jersey that helps youth across New Jersey who have been trafficked.

3. Be a conscientious consumer.

Do what you can to avoid buying products from companies that use forced labor or child labor. The following website can help you determine whether a product was ethically made: ResponsibleSourcingTool. org.

4. Volunteer with anti-trafficking agencies in your local community.

AVANZAR is looking for volunteers to man hotlines and assist victims of human

trafficking. If you have a desire to help, AVANZAR will provide training for you to learn to do so.

5. Call or email your local or state representatives to tell them constituents care about ending human trafficking.

Many anti-trafficking nonprofits have scripts and templates to use for contacting representatives and urging them to take action.

6. Mentor an at-risk child or teenager.

Traffickers target youth who lack strong support systems and feel alone.

See if there are any local mentoring organizations you can volunteer with, such as the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic Club.

7. Talk to your kids about how to stay safe.

The following website has guidance on how to protect children from predators: https://www.fbi.gov/how-we-can-helpyou/parents-and-caregivers-protecting-your-kids.

8. Learn about trauma-informed practices and consider implementing them in your business, medical practice, law practice or school.

You can utilize AVANZAR’s resources to learn to be a better neighbor to those in our community who have experienced human trafficking.

What to do if I need to report human trafficking?

Call 911 for emergencies and urgent situations.

Tip off authorities to potential human trafficking situations by calling 1-888-3737888 for the National Human Trafficking Hotline. This is a 24-hour, multilingual, toll-free hotline.

Price is everything you give up

his is the fourth column in my “money, sunny and honey” series, and week three on my favorite topic: Money. Check back over the past few weeks of my Shore Local Newsmagazine columns so you can catch up on the conversation.

Price is more than a tag.

When people think about the price of something, they think of the price tag. People talk about how much money they saved when they bought something on sale or when they went to a giant discount store.

However, there is far more to price than just the amount marked on the tag. Professionals define price as “Everything you give up to get what you want.” That’s why I chose the first six words of that definition for this week’s column.

You see, when I had my interview

with Money, he told me that looking at price simply as what is on the tag is one of the biggest reasons people do not have more of him. Money is made up of everything valuable, and value shouldn’t be discounted!

When you pay for something that costs you more than money, I call it “price plus.” No, I’m not talking about ShopRite or a cost-savings program. I mean when an item costs money plus something else.

You see the price tag, but you know it is going to take something more than just the money you have in your pocket to afford that thing you want to buy. It might cost you time, happiness, stress, etc. “Price plus” can be expensive!

A great example of “price plus” My father-in-law loves going to the giant discount warehouse store. He has been retired for years, so time is no problem for him. He goes to the giant discount warehouse store, gets on one of those scooters outside the store, and spends his time cruising the aisles looking for bargains. Later, he talks about all the money he saved.

However, what did those savings cost him? He has plenty of time, so maybe his time isn’t worth much. But what about you? How much is your time worth? When you go to the giant

discount warehouse store, do you save money or do you spend your valuable time driving to a distant store site?

Time is money. If you give up time to save some money, the price might be higher than you think.

Fastest service, highest quality, lowest price I once saw a sign in a print shop that said “We guarantee the fastest service, the highest quality, and the lowest price. Pick any two!” Folks, when it comes to lowering the price, you always have to give up something.

Money says: Price can be a revenue.

Most people are always talking about the price of something as if it were always a cost. But if you are selling something (like your time on a job), price can be a revenue! In other words, you are the seller, and the higher the price, the more you make.

This is also a good time to start thinking about getting a higher price in things other than money when you are selling something like your time.

The next time you ask for a raise, think about the things that are worth more to you and less to your boss. Asking for more money is always tough, but what about asking for more of something else instead like flexibility or more training? Maybe your boss will give you that, in greater quantities, than she will give you money. How much is flexibility worth to you? What if you were able to come in late, or leave early two days per week? How about training? Would it be worth more to you in your next job if you received some free training today?

When I’m negotiating for something, I almost always try to imagine what would be less valuable to the buyer and We've more valuable to me. It’sMoved! amazing what

Eagles fail final exam

igh school and college students take note. The Eagles are proof that acing your midterms is worthless if you flunk your final exams.

The Birds were on track to be voted the NFL’s valedictorian more than halfway through the season. At 10-1, they owned the best record in the league, were atop every media outlet’s power rankings, and were seemingly shoo-ins to get back to the Super Bowl.

Then everything went awry faster than you can say Nick Sirianni.

Their offense and defense fell apart, as did their coaching staff. An embarrassing, 32-9 playoff loss at Tampa Bay capped a shocking slump that saw them endure six losses in their final seven games, including

three straight defeats at the end of the season.

There will be major changes this offseason, both to the roster and coaching staff. Owner Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman will likely retain Sirianni for another year, but a major overhaul of his staff is expected.

The process has already started.

Sirianni fired defensive coordinator Sean DeSai earlier in the week and defensive play-caller Matt Patricia is already exploring other opportunities. Offensive coordinator Brian Johnson could land a job elsewhere as a head coach.

Philly sports fans shouldn’t get too depressed, though. The Sixers are playing well and Phillies pitchers and catchers report to Clearwater on Feb. 14.

FINAL GRADES Quarterback Jalen Hurts had moments where he looked like an elite quarterback, but there were other times when he struggled. A lingering knee injury no doubt affected his performance, but a lack of continuity was also problematic. He threw 15 interceptions compared to six last season. He countered

Running back When given the chance, D’Andre Swift showed he is among the NFL’s top running backs. He finished fifth in the NFL in rushing with 1,049 yards and averaged 4.6 yards per carry. The problem was the Eagles refused to commit to the running game often enough. Kenneth Gainwell added 364 yards and 30 receptions in a parttime role. Boston Scott was invisible down the stretch. Rashaad Penny was invisible the entire season. GRADE: B Offensive line They are still considered among the best offensive lines in the league, though they weren’t as dominant as in past seasons. Center Jason Kelce is still at the top of his game at age 36, but is expected to retire. If he does, Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson could replace him. Right tackle Lane Johnson is elite. Left tackle Jordan Mailata was impressive.

Injuries affected the rotation at right guard. GRADE: A Wide receiver/tight end This unit experienced a dropoff down the stretch, save for wide receiver Devonta Smith. A.J. Brown became the first Eagles wide receiver with at least 100 receptions in a season (106) and set an NFL record with six straight games with at least 125 receiving yards. But he had just 25 receptions for 292 yards in the last five games and one TD in the last eight before missing the playoff game with a knee injury. Smith had a great year with 81 catches for 1,066 yards and seven TDs. Tight end Dallas Goedert was limited with a fractured forearm. GRADE: B. Defensive line This unit was a disappointment.

The front four recorded 18.5 of the team’s 43 total sacks - down from a franchise-record 70 in 2022 – and

that includes 11 from edge rusher Haason Reddick. Reddick might have had more sacks had he not been required to drop back into pass coverage. End Josh Sweat recorded all 6.5 of his sacks in the first 10 games, though he did add one in the playoffs against Tampa. Veteran end Brandon Graham had just three regular-season sacks after recording 11 in 2022. The interior line - tackles Jalen Carter, Fletcher Cox, Jordan Davis – hit a wall in the second half of the year.

GRADE: D Linebacker Roseman continues to de-emphasize linebackers and continues to get burned. The team clearly missed T.J. Edwards (Bears) and Kyzir White (Cardinals), who left in free agency.

Nicholas Morrow, Zach Cunningham were not good. They couldn’t tackle and couldn’t cover. Nakobe Dean was a non-factor due to injury. Rookie Nolan Smith was barely used. GRADE: F Secondary The worst part of the defense.

Opposing quarterbacks had their way with them. Cornerback Darius Slay was OK, but not great. James Bradberry was terrible. Avonte Maddox missed most of the season with an injury and struggled when he returned.

Safeties Reed Blankenship and Kevin Byard were also ineffective for most of the year. Rookie Sydney Brown showed promise before suffering a knee injury. GRADE: F Special teams The most-improved unit under special teams coordinator Michael Clay. Place-kicker Jake Elliott was again superb. He made 30 of 32 field goals, including 7-for-8 from 50 yards and beyond. Britain Covey led the NFC in punt returns with a 14.4-yard average. Punter Braden Mann averaged 49.8 yards per punt. GRADE: A. Coaching Everything that went right during the first half of the season went

playoff touchdown, catching a 19-yard TD pass from Packers quarterback Jordan Love in Green Bay’s 24-21 loss to the 49ers. It came one play after Melton drew a 41-yard pass interference penalty.

Pacheco was one of the stars in the Chiefs’ 27-24 win at Buffalo that sent them to the AFC Championship game at Baltimore. His 4-yard TD run in the fourth quarter proved to be the winning play. For the game, Pacheco ran for a game-high 97 yards on 15 carries.

Melton and Pacheco, who as three career playoff TDs, are among three local players who have reached the end zone in the postseason. Running back William Green (Holy Spirit, Atlantic City) scored in a 2002 playoff game for the Browns.

Fiber-what you need to know

D

id you know that people who eat more fiber tend to live longer than those who eat fewer servings per week? The standard American diet consists of a lot of processed meat, fried foods, and refined grains—all of which have little to no fiber, so it isn’t surprising that 95% of Americans don’t consume enough fiber in their daily diet. Most healthcare professionals would agree that you should get about 25-35 grams a day.

Fiber comes in two flavors. Soluble fiber dissolves in water to form a gel solution in the intestine, which slows down digestion and provides a prolonged feeling of satiety and decreased appetite. This can make you feel fuller longer, which can help with weight management. Soluble fiber also causes a reduction in food

glycemic index-and the sugar spikes from the food eaten- which again is beneficial for weight management.

Not only does soluble fiber help regulate blood sugar levels, but also cholesterol levels by slowing down their absorption into the blood.

Finally, dietary soluble fiber helps feed your good gut bacteria. Why do we care about gut bacteria you may ask? These commensal gut bacteria use soluble fiber as their “food source” and in turn, create for you healthy, short chain fatty acids, which improve gut barrier integrity, glucose and lipid metabolism, regulate the immune system, regulate the inflammatory response, and help with blood pressure management1.

Food sources high in soluble fiber include oatmeal, chia seeds, nuts, beans, lentils, apples, pears, citrus fruits, carrots, blueberries, broccoli, peas, cucumbers, celery and oat bran.

The second fiber flavor is insoluble fiber, which does not dissolve in water. As such, it passes primarily intact through the digestive system, bulking up the stool, promoting bowel regularity and thereby prevents constipation. This type of fiber plays an important role in the body’s de-

toxification process. Almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, beans, whole wheat, barley, quinoa, brown rice, legumes, leafy greens like kale are the best sources of insoluble dietary fiber.

Overall, fiber isn’t sexy, but an adequate fiber intake is associated with reduced risk for heart disease, stroke, hypertension, some gastrointestinal diseases, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

Who doesn’t want that? So, opt to increase fiber in your diet by eating more fruits, vegetables both raw and cooked, whole grains, peas, beans and legumes. Here are some suggestions. ● Raw carrots with nut butter or hummus and snap peas with a handful of mixed lightly salted nuts make a balanced snack. ● Add fiber to your breakfast cereal with a sprinkle of ground flaxseeds, wheat germ, coconut flakes or chia seeds and fresh berries. ● Remember to choose cereals that have a whole grain as their first ingredient, and don’t be fooled by fancy packaging or the word multigrain (which is NOT the same as whole grain).

Buying and selling a home at the same time Real Estate Matters

ach real estate transaction comes with its own set of challenges, but buying a home while selling your existing home compounds these challenges. Proper planning and preparation are keys to a successful conclusion for both transactions.

Building a great team will help you put together a successful plan for your sale and purchase.

Working With Your Real Estate Agent Your real estate agent can help you develop a clear idea of your needs and expectations for the process. Everything will be time-sensitive, but if you are under severe time pressure, it is important to be very clear about your timeline.

If your purchase will be out of the area, in another market, or out of

state, allow your agent to refer you to a qualified agent in the new area where you will be relocating. Their coordination and cooperation will be vital.

Right Pricing of Your Current Home You will want to sell your current home for the highest possible price as quickly as possible. That means you will need to right-price your home rather than overpricing it.

Most home buyers typically search for homes in pricing increments of $25,000-$50,000. If it is suggested that the approximate value of your home is up to $400,000, you would be best to list at, or under, that price.

This will create increased buyer interest and activity in your home and it will, in most cases, get closer to or at asking price.

Talk to your real estate agent about a price that is fair, but also encourages buyer interest and enthusiasm.

Searching For Your New Home You will want to keep your timeline in mind when searching for your new home. That may mean that you will need to put more time into your home search or be a bit more flexible in your requirements.

If you are looking to sell and buy your dream home, you may want to put in place a longer process with a stop-over into a short-term rental property to buy you some extra time.

Working With Your Lender You will need to spend time talking with your lender about the way your financing will work for you.

Depending upon your financial situation, you may need to close on your current home before initiating financing on your next home, or you may qualify for both mortgage loans simultaneously.

There are loan products available that can help you access the equity of your current home to help you purchase your new home, and then pay the temporary bridge loan off when you close. Talk these scenarios over with your lender.

Working With Your Title Company Depending on the location of the two properties, you may be able to close using the same title company on both your sale and purchase.

Alternatively, you may be able to conduct closing by having the closing documents sent to you by mail to be signed and notarized for your convenience.

Working With Your Movers Unlike a standard move, you may need to have your household goods packed and stored for a while before they arrive at your new home. Talk to your movers about your options so they can help you determine the most cost-effective and efficient way of facilitating the particulars of your move.

Short-Term Lease Options You may have visions of a sameday sale and purchase. While this does happen, it requires everything to proceed perfectly, with the buyers and sellers on both sides of two different transactions, as well as with both of the lenders involved.

Just in case this does not occur, it is a smart idea to put a back-up plan into place.

If you need more time between closings, you may want to rent month to month, or stay in a short- term rental that is furnished while your personal belongings are stored until your new home is ready for your occupancy.

Regardless of how you plan it out, the goal is to make buying and selling at the same time successful and seamless based on your individual wants and needs.

Meet the breeds: The Airedale Terrier

his weekend my Bull Terriers and I will be volunteering our time at the Javits Center in New York City at an event called “Meet the Breeds.”

Hosted by the American Kennel Club, this event is staffed by breeders of purebred dogs registered with the American Kennel Club and allows the public to come meet their dream breed in the flesh. I have decided to write “Meet the Breeds” articles and will start with a dog from my favorite group, the terrier group.

The first terrier in the lineup, the Airedale Terrier, is referred to as “The King of the Terriers” primarily because of their size. Like most terriers, the Airedale originated in England. It was known as a dog for working-class people who didn’t have large farms where they could keep kennels for ratting dogs. The

Airedale was bred to not only rat but to dispatch larger vermin as well protecting the family home. It most possibly started as a mix of the extinct Old English Terrier and the Otterhound, which created a hearty wirehaired coat and a “jack of all trades dog.”

The name Airedale comes from this breed of dog originating in the Valley of Aire in England.

The Airedale is reported to have first been imported to the United States in roughly the 1880s. They became the most popular dog in the States during the height of World War I when heroic tales of Airedales serving as courageous messenger dogs spread around the world. An Airedale named Jack received the highest honor in the British Military System, known as the Victoria Cross, after he bravely ran the trenches after being shot but was determined to deliver his message before dying.

The Airedale Club of America strives today to preserve the temperament and looks of the original Airedale Terrier first seen back in

England. The Airedale stands roughly 23 inches high and is known for its reddish wirehaired coat and black “saddle” on the back. While taller than the other terriers, they are described as “at all times a terrier in appearance and attitude.” Airedales should be jolly and friendly. However, they will never back down from a challenge and are fierce protectors of their families. If you are attracted to the myth of a “low allergy” dog coat, the Airedale’s short wire coat may be for you. When routinely brushed, people with allergies report being

able to live with Airedales symptom-free.

The Airedale Terrier is a majestic, keen, and highly intelligent dog with few known health issues.

Every Airedale breeder I know still will have their hearts, hips, and kidneys screened before breeding.

Protecting your identity

t’s important to talk about identity theft and discuss the ways that thieves get your information, what they do with it, and how to protect yourself. Unfortunately, many people don’t know what the real risk factors are vs. the perceived ones.

In order to steal your identity, a criminal needs any three components of your ID such as name, date of birth, address, social security number, driver’s license or passport number, passwords, etc. With any three of these pieces of information, a criminal could gain access to any number of potentially damaging things.

A common misconception about identity theft is that it happens from shopping online. If you are shopping on a secure site with good encryption, it is less likely to happen. A much bigger concern is the use of an unsecured Wi-Fi network since criminals have the ability to intercept passwords over it. Any financial transaction should not be made over free Wi-Fi at the local coffee shop but rather at your home over a secure network.

Shopping online and unsecure Wi-Fi aren’t the only threats. The

mishandling of your credit card or credit report is another one. A credit report contains a wealth of information about you that a thief could use to harm you financially.

The same goes for your credit card.

A server in a restaurant could use a skimmer in the back room to read your card or they could simply write down the card numbers along with the expiration date and CVV number.

Skimmers can also be used at ATMs or gas station pumps. Ideally, your card should never leave your sight.

However, in reality, most people are not going to follow their server to the credit card machine every time they go out to dinner. It’s just a reminder to be mindful of the businesses that you use your credit card at and to be wary of some ATMs. So why do criminals want your information? Credit card use is a big area of fraud, but an even bigger reason is to file a fake tax return using your social security number to obtain a refund. Then when you go to file your return, the IRS rejects it since “you” already filed. While the IRS reported in 2018 a 40 percent decrease in stolen tax identities between 2016 and 2017 filings largely due to security initiatives they put in place, there are still thousands of taxpayers who are victims of tax identity theft. On average, restoration can take up to six months or even longer for more complex cases.

So, how do you protect yourself?

1. As I mentioned, don’t make financial transactions or transmit sensitive data over unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

2. Do not share your full date of birth or even your home address on social media sites.

3. Make sure you run good antivirus and anti-malware software.

4. Use multifactor authentication whenever possible.

5. Use a strong password that is at least 12 digits long. Passwords should be a combination of capitalized and uncapitalized letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use identifiable in-

If you are a victim of identity theft or fraud, you should report it to authorities as soon as possible.

your financial institutions. If your SSN is compromised and you know or suspect you are a victim of tax-related identity theft, the IRS recommends responding immediately to any notice you receive and calling the number provided.
