Gov. Murphy signs bill easing limits on breweries

ov. Phil Murphy signed a bill Tuesday lifting food and event restrictions on breweries and allowing towns to reclaim some inactive liquor licenses, changes that won the governor’s approval even though they fall short of his initial goal of gradually wiping out liquor license limits altogether.

The law eliminates annual limits on events held by craft alcohol manufacturers and allows them to partner with restaurants and food trucks for food service. Regulations issued by the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control in 2019 capped brewers to 25 on-premises events per year, but those rules have been inactive for months as lawmakers negotiated the changes signed into law Tuesday.

The new law leaves the state’s liquor license limit — one license per 3,000 residents in a given municipality — unchanged, though it will allow towns to reclaim disused liquor licenses and licenses not linked to an establishment.

Under the new law, towns can move to reclaim liquor licenses that have been inactive for up to three years.

The change will not increase the

number of liquor licenses issued in New Jersey, but it could bring more than 1,300 inactive licenses back into circulation, increasing the state’s stock of active licenses by roughly 15%.

The governor’s original proposal called for liquor license limits to decrease by 10% per year — first to one license per 2,700 residents, then per 2,430 residents, and so on — before eliminating them entirely by 2029.

The changes signed into law Tuesday might have no effect at all on sparsely populated towns. Those with fewer than 3,000 residents cannot issue any liquor licenses of the type used by bars and restaurants.

Provisions of the bill signed Tuesday will allow municipalities to solicit bids for additional liquor licenses from other towns and cities, but only if they share a border.

Other provisions will create a new class of liquor license for use in shopping mall food courts, a bid to increase foot traffic at retailers that have struggled to retain shoppers amid technological advancements in the last two decades.

New Jerseyans shouldn’t expect more liquor license reforms anytime soon.

ou're probably familiar with the saying that the best things in life are free. For instance, love, friendship, and health are invaluable aspects of our lives. They increase in value as time passes. Love grows deeper, friendships stand the test of time, and our health becomes increasingly more important with each passing year. With time and a collection of life experiences, you begin to realize that no matter what's in your bank account, what kind of car you drive or title you hold, your health is the most valuable asset of all.

I used to believe that my health was purely physical. As long as my muscular and skeletal systems were functioning well and my organs were doing their job, then I considered myself pretty healthy. I now realize it's so much more than that. Although phys-

For me, taking care of those other aspects of my health usually involves calming my mind by finding my way back to my yoga mat. It is too easy to get lost in the busyness of life. Committing to carving out one hour a day for myself where I am not working or caregiving allows me the space I need to feel balanced.

There's something about living near the shoreline that makes life extra special. Maybe it's the salt air, the sights and sounds of crashing surf or the squishing of sand under our feet. This week we got a glimpse of snow on the beach and boardwalk for the first time in two years. And we may be getting more soon!

Winter may not be my favorite time of the year, but I recognize there is beauty in it. The most beautiful thing about living in New Jersey is experiencing the gifts of all four seasons. So, until my toes are back in the sand, I will find joy in the little moments. Soon, the days get a little longer and the air will get warmer as winter gives way to spring. Until then, wishing you warmth and good health.

Local star back home after being on season 24 of NBC’s “The Voice”

A

fter spending months filming season 24 of NBC’s The Voice, Galloway’s Mara Justine is back home.

After being selected for the blind auditions, the 21-year-old had about a month to prepare and practice. She recalled trying to keep her spirits high as she got ready for the important day so that she could give it her everything.

“I prayed for this opportunity so when it came, it felt like the right timing. From being on two other shows, I had gained so much wisdom from that and I felt like I was able to give it my all,” said Justine.

Once she snagged a spot on the show in September, Justine spent the

following months traveling back and forth between Los Angeles and New Jersey, filming a couple of episodes at a time until the live shows in December.

Justine has been singing her entire life. The Absegami High School alum remembered her mom telling her that she was always singing as a child. However, she took singing lessons at 8 years old and continued up until she graduated.

Through training, school productions and other local gigs, Justine has quite a repertoire that even involves multiple on-screen performances. At 11 years old, she auditioned for season 9 of “America’s Got Talent” and made it to the top 12 before being eliminated. At 15 years old, she was on season 16 of “American Idol”, but was sent home after making it to the top 14.

She didn’t let those experiences keep her from chasing her dream, though.

After spending some time away from the screen, Justine returned with a performance of Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” during

blind auditions. Her powerful performance was followed by all four judges immediately turning around, John Legend being the first.

While all of them wanted her, Legend and Niall Horan fought for her. Horan begged on his knees and pushed his button to make a foam finger drop from the ceiling, but Legend had a trick up his sleeve. He and Justine sang an impromptu duet of his song “All of Me.” Although she came in with her mind set on country legend Reba McEntire, the duet led her to choose “Team Legend.”

“After I sang with him, I felt like we had a connection and I feel like he suited me really well and my heart was telling me to go in that direction,” she said.

Horan later exacted revenge when Justine chose him to be her coach after he and Gwen Steffani both attempted to steal her during knockouts. She said getting to know and work with him was a blessing.

Justine said the overall experience was unlike any other and that she was given the opportunity to grow and learn, both as a singer and human.

She learned to not be afraid of being herself and that there’s strength in vulnerability. Performing-wise, she learned that “what’s important is the love behind the music.”

“My dream is to, wherever I end up, just be singing on stage. I would really love to be a light in the world and an inspiration and put out some music that can make people feel something special,” she said. Justine also wishes to record music in the future.

As for now, she’s been learning

how to play guitar and has some gigs lined up, including her performance at The Cove in Brigantine on Saturday,

Jan. 13, held to thank her supporters.

“I've just been planning and getting myself together for whatever may come my way,” Justine said.

“I went through a long break where I didn’t work on it at all because it wasn’t going in the direction I wanted it to. I really just wanted something spooky. I didn't want horror, and I didn’t want a killer,” said Roff. “So I stopped approving of it, and I stopped thinking that it was going to be any good.”

But after that pause, she wanted to finish it for herself because she wanted to know how it was going to end.

“The moment I started approving of it, the whole thing just started pouring out of me very easily… It was almost like channeling. The whole book just came through,” Roff said.

Within a few months, she was done writing her first book.

In 2023, the local author published two paranormal romance books, the first of which she’d been working on for 10 years.

Roff fell in love with writing as a girl. Although she went to college for art and illustration, she took writing courses and wound up finishing with a minor in writing.

She also said that she has always been obsessed with ghost stories.

Roff recalled being fascinated when learning about local lore, like the Jersey Devil, and when her grandmother recited ghost stories.

So, when coming up with the book’s storyline, it was almost a no-brainer.

Her premier book, “Haunted Hearts,” was released on March 3, 2023.

The story’s based on the headless horseman story but with a twist: he’s not the bad guy in this one.

“In most stories, the headless horseman is kind of the bad guy who comes out to kill everyone, but in this story, there’s a killer who’s obsessed with him and is mimicking him,” said Roff.

n Thursday, Jan. 11, Rutgers Statewide held an honors ceremony for Gina Harvell to award her their first annual Lifelong Learner Award.

Gina, an Atlantic City native and graduate student at Rutgers University, is on track to receive her Master’s in Social Work with a Minor in Drug and Alcohol Counseling this spring.

Not only is Gina the first recipient of the award but the sole inspiration for it. The Lifelong Learner Award was devised in response to Gina’s resilience in the face of struggle. The award was created to celebrate her continued academic optimism and sheer drive.

Gina experienced a long and arduous road of addiction, cancer, homelessness, incarceration, and loss before deciding to turn her life around and truly embark on her educational journey.

She spent a fraction of her life in the Atlantic City Brown’s Park, where she would use drugs and watch the students on ACCC’s campus come and go. It was during these times that she’d think about her desire to go to school and get a college education.

Eventually, against all odds, Gina prevailed. She went on to receive her GED in 2010. Then she received her Associate’s and Bachelor’s degrees from Atlantic County Community College, having made the Dean’s List nearly every one of those semesters.

Gina graduated with a 3.96 GPA for her BA. In the Spring of 2024, Gina is set

to graduate from Rutgers University with a Master’s degree in Social Work.

During the ceremony, encouraging remarks were given on Gina’s academic performance and character.

Among them was Dr. Richard Novak, a Rutgers University professor. He assured the audience that there are “many types of heroes who do things we could never do:” among them is Gina Harvell. “She stands as an inspiration to us all,” he said proudly.

Gina’s story is one of true resilience, but also of how important it is for us to recognize the light in others, especially in cases when some peoples’ difficult journeys may dull their sparkle. It’s our job as a community to lift up people like Gina so they can reach their full potential and make the world a better place.

Attending Gina’s honorary ceremony was a privilege, but listening to her share her story was even more special. The light, optimism and authenticity that radiated from her was truly inspiring.

She thanked ACCC for “laying the foundation” that ultimately took her to Rutgers, as well as everyone who came to support her. She ultimately urged the audience that while her story is one of resilience, it’s also one of empathy.

It was so refreshing and insightful attending this ceremony, but it’s Gina’s words that sum up the essence of the experience more perfectly than mine. “Never look down on anyone or turn your back on them,” she said to the audience, “because the next Gina Harvell could be looking for that spark.”

Young's Skating Center celebrates 50 years

standing on the polished floor of the The Ventnor Athletic Center ready to roll around the rink her family built from the ground up in 1935 on Dorset Avenue in Ventnor Heights. More than 88 years later, Judy Link is still in the skating business in South Jersey long after the Ventnor rink turned into a CVS. She runs Young's Skating Center, also built by her immediate family in Mays Landing.

From 1935 until it closed in 1988, the Ventnor Athletic Center offered people something to do in the Downbeach section of the Jersey Shore south of Atlantic City, especially during the slow quiet winter months.

You might say the rink changed the dynamics in town during the winter.

"We gave them something to do. And launched a venture that the family still enjoys today, though the action takes place in Mays Landing," Judy said.

“And so it went, one generation after another in the service of roller skating,” said Ralph Marinelli, who serves as Mr. Fixit, historian and any other job you can think of at the skating rink.

"Our motto, found on our letterhead, is, “Generations of Roller Skating Tradition,” Judy said.

The Young's were never far away from the rink. They lived above the Ventnor one so each night the three girls could hear the cacophony from the skaters and the music accompaniment filtering upstairs. "Aunt Marian Patroni got a straw buyer to make an offer to my grandmother to buy the rink for her in 1973, As you can imagine it was devastating to our family,” said Judy, who retired as a biology teacher in 1980.

Marian Patroni owned and operated the Ventnor Athletic Center from 1973 to the mid-1980s then sold it to CVS, which occupies much of the real estate. The rink closed in 1988.

Meantime, way back in 1962, Edmund and Winifred purchased Lenape Park in Mays Landing. The park had an operating roller rink which went along with boat ramps and amusement rides. The park suffered a fire which destroyed the existing rink. The Young's built a new one in another area of the park. Young's Skating Center opened in 1974. "This year, 2024, marks the 50th Anniversary of the rink," Judy said.

That isn't all. Edmund, Wynnie and Judy built a skating center in Blue Bell, Pa., which they called Young’s Regency. "My husband, Jim Link, and I met there," Judy said. "We sold that skating rink. Jim and I leased one in Villanova from 1990 to 1995 when my parents wanted to retire. We entered into lease-purchase agreement and subsequently purchased Young’s Skating Center from my parents and have been here since.”

The rink still hosts the South Jersey Figure Skating Club, South Jersey Speed, and the South Jersey Hockey Club.

One thing is indispensable to skating: music. At one point, skating music drew from an exhaustive catalog of 45 rpm records. "My father developed long playing tapes to skate to.

Later we had record service that supplied us with all the popular records of the day,” Judy said. “Today, we rely on an internet steaming at Young's."

Skaters can burn 600 calories an hour, said Roller Skating Association Executive Director, Jim McMahon.

“It's a unique energy tied to the music. Body moves rise and fall with the beat they got to keep."

Jim and Judy are not alone in their love of roller skating. "We've been members of the Roller Skating Association (RSA) for 44 years. Our membership in the RSA has provided endless guidance and interaction with fellow roller skating rink owners/ operators around the country with whom were share our experiences."

Today, around 1,100 rinks still do business according to the RSA. The numbers have remained steady over five years but are skewed by COVID-19. "The country lost around 70 rinks during the pandemic,” McMahon said.

Some banks declined to work with rink owners. "All they needed to do was freeze payments until the rinks were healthy and doing well," he said.

Today, roller rinks are in a good space now, thanks in part to social media The popularity isn’t universally shared. "Skating is on the decline for a number of reasons,” said Max McKillip, archivist at the National Museum of Roller Skating in Lincoln, Nebraska. “Activities for children have diversified. There are occasionally new rinks built but startup costs are a hindrance.”

McMahon is still optimistic.

"The energy and excitement is better than ever. It's why it won't ever go away,” he said.

Car wash company to open Pleasantville location

T

he Tennessee-based ModWash car wash company is ready to make a splash in Pleasantville at the intersection of New Road and the Black Horse Pike.

The self-serve car wash industry has come a long way in recent years.

It has evolved tremendously since the days of the small, do-it-yourself car washes, to ultramodern facilities such as the ModWash car wash tunnel drive that is nearing completion, which is something you must see to appreciate.

They provide a full suite of selfserve detailing options including airguns, tire air pumps, glass cleaner, mat cleaning machines and stations, bug prep stations, and microfiber towels. They don’t do the interior; however, they offer complimentary vacuums and other supplies for the

customer to finish the job.

Founded in 2020, ModWash is the largest female-owned car wash business in the country with more than 90 sites now in operation. Owner Karen Hutton has ambitious plans to expand to more than 100 locations within the next 24 months.

Mod currently has locations in 14 states. In addition to Pleasantville, the company has its eye on other New Jersey operations to aggressively expand. South Jersey already

has ModWash locations in Cherry Hill, Vineland, Millville, Turnersville, and Sicklerville with more coming.

Each location is said to be exceeding expectations.

The company philosophy is simple.

They make it a point to integrate into every community they enter and the employees are trained to give each customer the ultimate service with a smile.

They also frequently team up with various charities to create a bond

with the community, raising money for worthy causes.

Customers can choose from a variety of membership plans ranging from a full premium plan to a single wash. The individual washes include a special bug treatment, triple foam wash, rain repellent, True Shine ModWash and ModShine.

A few simple steps for a healthier new you

I

t’s the time of year again for making promises to ourselves about how much weight to lose, applying for gym memberships, eating healthier, yada, yada. We know all too well that the road to good health, is paved with good intentions.

But living a healthier, more balanced life doesn’t have to be super complicated.

Sometimes I get the question from patients and clients “where do I even start?” So, here are some small things to consider doing that can make a big impact on your overall health and wellbeing.

Fit in fiber. Find ways to consume fiber in every meal. Dietary fiber is naturally found in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and nuts. Not only is fiber helpful for improving constipation a fiber-rich diet is associated with lower risk of diabetes, heart disease,

and colorectal cancer. Aim to eat a variety of naturally fiber-rich foods throughout the day. The recommended amount is 20 grams a day for women and 30 grams a day for men.

Eat the rainbow. Where fruits and veggies are concerned, the more color on your plate the better. Plants contain different pigments or phytonutrients which give them their color. Different color plants are linked to higher levels of specific nutrients and you reap more of the benefits by adding more variety.

Drink more water. I find that adding fresh berries, pineapple, cucumber, mint or citrus to infuse flavor can help increase water intake. Inspirational water bottles can help gamify and motivate you to drink more too. My son and I have matching inspirational water bottles and we enjoy seeing who “wins the water battle” at the end of the day.

Cut out sugar. Beware, sugar is hidden everywhere. At the very least, make a plan to cut back on sugar consumption for example, by removing one sweet drink a day and replacing it with an unsweetened beverage. Water, We've Moved! seltzer, unsweetened tea are good

choices. Look for sugar in any boxed or bagged food items and aim for less than 25 grams of sugar per day. You’ll be surprised at how much sugar is hiding in the foods and drinks we love most.

Add a well-balanced quality multivitamin.

Make sure it is one that’s free from artificial flavors, binders, fillers and chemical dye. I would argue that supplementation with a quality multivitamin is absolutely necessary to help fill in nutritional gaps in the standard American diet.

Get better sleep quality.

We all know the importance of a good night sleep and how lack of sleep diminishes mental focus and personal productivity. Warm showers before bed, limiting screen time, reading, playing soothing instrumental music and candlelight can help.

Take a few minutes to inventory the suggestions above and if you can’t check each of these off on a regular basis, then you’ve found a good place to start with creating a new healthier you.

The Night Driver

I

can’t sleep. I fall asleep, I just can’t stay asleep. Predictably, about one or one-thirty in the morning, I am awake and alert.

Efforts to fall back to sleep are futile.

I have read that as we age, we require less sleep but I don’t want less sleep.

My mother used to be up at night and end up sleeping late or taking naps during the day. Perhaps, I am now on her schedule.

Once awake, my hamster wheel of a mind starts spooling up reviewing the events of the day. How I would like to shut myself off and reboot as easily as my iPhone. I have learned a few techniques of meditation, slow and deep breathing but my mind has put up a firewall. There are times when my wife has walked in the living room

in the wee hours of the morning and found me on the laptop or reading a book. With a shake of her head, she turns and quickly slips into the soft embrace of slumber once again. A couple of nights ago, I was thinking of assembling the IKEA furniture we purchased but it was 4 a.m. and good sense prevailed. I wondered if I had ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) after watching a short YouTube video about the condition.

The physician in the video said, it is not an “attention deficit.” It is more of an “attention overload.” Picture a Ferrari which has a sophisticated, powerful engine but with bicycle brakes. It is capable of excessive speeds but could not handle the braking efficiently. That sounds like me at night. The events of the day started showing up like a newsreel.

The Ferrari has started its engine.

I think about how we went to REI, made a purchase and then went to a restaurant where I discovered I lost my credit card. Calls to REI did not produce a card so calls to the bank ensued. After repeated pleas of “Speak to a representative!” my account was frozen and a new card

is in the mail which will be followed by reaching out to all the companies with whom I had automatic charges.

The Ferrari is shifting gears and picking up speed. I am thinking about the ambitious adventure my wife and I are going to embark on in the spring (more about that later) and all the logistics that go along with that. Of course, the concerns of aging and the wellbeing of family is omnipresent.

Gears shift once again. The Ferrari is howling, tugging on the reins. As

a board member of our HOA, it is evident that it is operating like a mini Washington, D.C. with campaigning and promises being traded for loyalties. How am I going to navigate those turbulent waters?

The bicycle brakes on the Ferrari smell like they are burning and the acceleration is pushing me deeper into the seat. Eventually, it had its way with me. The Ferrari finished its lap, thus releasing the grasp it had on me. I am wrung out, returned to bed and finally fell asleep. My wife is sympathetic and the next morning makes some suggestions including more exercise, more reading, guided meditation and even a glass (or two) of wine. That is the plan for now. I just hope there isn’t a Lamborghini idling somewhere nearby.

Loaded hummus for a delicious, healthy snack to start off the new year Let It Grow

hether you have already broken your New Year’s resolutions or vowed to make 2024 the year to be disciplined in your eating, we have a dish for you that is sure to please without

sacrificing your conscience or your tastebuds. Hummus provides a source of plant-based protein, while also having benefits such as fiber, manganese, copper, iron, and zinc.

But loaded hummus takes things to a whole different level, both visually and tastewise.

Like all of my favorite recipes, you can make this completely homemade or take a few shortcuts. This recipe can also be made in advance for those of us who only have small windows of time to get things done. Loaded hummus comes together quickly for a fun, healthy snack at home, but looks good enough to make it par-

ty-worthy. For the shortest version, take a pretty platter or cutting board, and spoon on your favorite brand of store-bought hummus, making dips and curves with the back of a spoon. These little craters will hold tiny pools of extra virgin olive oil when it’s served. Add your favorite toppings, and your snack is served. But if you have a few extra minutes, try making the hummus yourself only one time, and you won’t want to go back to the store brand again.

For the homemade version, take two cans of chickpeas and rinse them well. Place in a medium-sized saucepan and cover with a small amount of water. Bring water to a boil and simmer for about 15-20 minutes. During this time, you can assemble your other ingredients and the time will fly by. Once your chickpeas have finished simmering, spoon off a half a cup of the cooking water and save. Drain and rinse chickpeas with a fine strainer. At this point, some of the outer shells of the chickpeas will have come off. Try to pick some of these out, but you don’t need to be particular about this. Once your cooked chickpeas are drained, add them to a blender or food processor, along with two peeled cloves of garlic, ¼ cup olive oil, about two tablespoons of the reserved cooking

water (more if your hummus comes out too thick), six tablespoons lemon juice, six tablespoons tahini (sesame paste), one-half to one teaspoon kosher salt (depending on your taste), and a ½ teaspoon of cumin. Whiz everything together and allow the food processor or blender to process for five minutes. You should have smooth, warm hummus that you will want to eat straight from the blender, but be patient, the best is yet to come.

Now for the topping; it’s all a matter of taste. Feel free to experiment with ingredients. My suggestions are:

chopped grape or cherry tomatoes, pitted kalamata olives, chopped pepperoncinis, cucumbers (I used lovely little Persian cucumbers that I did not peel), chopped and diced red peppers, red onion, mint, and parsley. This recipe is very forgiving. Feel free to add extra ingredients or leave some of these out. Toss all of your topping ingredients with a little olive oil, sprinkle of salt and pepper, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Keep your topping separate until just before serving. Once you are ready, add your topping to the hummus, and drizzle a little more olive oil over everything.

Sprinkle it with a dash of cumin and paprika. The last time I made this, I

was trying to keep it dairy-free and gluten-free for a guest, so I served it with red pepper slices, and left out feta cheese. But a side dish of feta and a bowl of pita chips would be a welcome addition for others.

Family Corner: Undoing diet culture damage

“Today is the day,” she claims.

“That I’ll release the weight and the shame. Today, I’ll find my worth somewhere else, like maybe, just maybe, inside of myself.”

This line is from a poem I wrote in 2017 after a public journey of losing over one hundred pounds. When I birthed my daughter in 2010, I had already tried and failed on numerous occasions to lose the weight “once and for all.”

At twenty-two years old, with a toddler in tow, I signed up for a wellknown weight loss program.

Eighteen months later, I’d find myself crying on my mother’s couch at seeing a buffet on a magazine cover.

I had lost control. I was wearing a size two. I had lost way more than I set out to initially and the thought of food in abundance became my worst nightmare. I didn’t feel any healthier as a

skinny person than I did when I stepped on the scale nearly two years earlier. I felt lost, scared, and confused.

As an overweight child of the '90s, diets and diet culture were all I knew. I remember the first time I recognized there was “something wrong with me” in the eyes of others when a neighbor asked my mother what she was going to do about my weight. I was eleven.

The grown-ups in the world did their best to guide me and love me in the way they knew how, but it was no secret to me that there was a problem with how the rest of the world could see me. I dreaded putting my weight on school forms, sports trading cards, or anything that caused me to face myself, as those things made it true - that I was, in fact, a significantly overweight child. The word “obese” was a word I learned early,

and diets were so deeply rooted in my consciousness that I owned obesity as part of my personal truth.

So, when I dropped ten pant sizes and could see my cheekbones, being an overweight person was still so deeply rooted that it took me the last ten years to create a new reality for myself. I heard my mom talk about her weight loss mentor once saying, “It took me two years to lose the weight physically, but ten years to lose it mentally.”

These are the things that were the unwritten rules in my life. I was going to be overweight forever, and if I ever did lose the weight, it might take ten more years to get my mind right.

Many of us are still working to undo quite a bit of the diet culture damage of the '90s and 2000s. We were the guinea pigs for it! Thankfully, we have access to so much more information and a broader understanding of overall well-being now

that we aren’t so easily sold the same old bill of health.

The layers of this story would take up too many more pages, but much of it can be found in my 2017 book "Nourish", where I begin a new journey of self-discovery and self-trust.

My daughter is now a teenager, and I’ve learned so much about my own path. Through my own experiences and conversations with so many others who have faced similar battles, if there’s one thing I know to be true, it’s that how we view ourselves can have a meaningful impact on how our children see themselves. We are their superheroes. I decided long ago that my mental and spiritual health would become my focus, and if there was one thing I could do to be a better mom, it was to stop obsessing over my weight and self-image. I vowed to stop talking about it altogether in front of my kids and allow them to create their own stories.

Though born in North Carolina and educated classically, albeit briefly, at

Atlantic City is not particularly known as the birthplace of future stars of jazz. However, when looking more closely at the record, Atlantic City was the birthplace of several certifiable legends of jazz, and even more were nurtured by “The Queen of Resorts.”

The story of the “discovery” of future jazz Ziggy Elman trumpet legend Clifford Brown by Quincy Jones and Lionel Hampton, during Brown’s summer tenure at Atlantic City’s Club Paradise, has been detailed previously in

the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, one of Simone’s first professional jobs as a pianist was at an Atlantic City bar on 1719 Pacific Ave.

called the Midtown Bar & Grill. She had just turned 21 and was hired in June of 1954, solely as a pianist.

After a night or two, the Midtown’s owner made it clear that if Waymon didn’t sing and play she’d be out of a job. As the story goes, her singing was a success, her salary was upped to $90 a week, and that summer she changed her name to Nina Simone.

Those were not easy times. Atlantic City, in 1954, was still segregated.

In her 1991 autobiography, “I Put a Spell on You,” Simone described the place as “a seedy little bar where old guys go to huddle over a drink and fall asleep.” Still, a star was born there.

Big band vocalist Helen Forrest, best known for her work with the orchestras of Harry James, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman, was born in Atlantic City in 1917. She moved to Brooklyn as a teen, and then moved back to the shore where she got her pro start in a band led by her brother.

She returned to the New York City area when she was around 17 years of age, sang on area radio stations for a few years, and was finally “discovered” by mercurial bandleader Artie Shaw.

Forrest had difficult shoes to fill, as she replaced Billie Holiday in the Shaw band. Forrest had the distinction of working with three of the big band era’s most popular ensembles— James, Goodman, and Shaw—and was voted by Down Beat magazine as the nation’s top vocalist in 1941 and 1942.

After the big band era was over, her profile dimmed, but she did work intermittently as a soloist. She was working with the “ghost band” of Tommy Dorsey, led by saxophonist Sam Donahue, in December of 1963, the night that the Dorsey band’s male singer, Frank Sinatra, Jr. was

Drummer Buddy Rich is often recalled as an electrifying big band drummer who drove the bands of Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey and Harry James, as well as his own swinging bands from 1966 through 1983. However, Rich led a remarkable series of small groups over the years, with the most extraordinary of all being the combo he led from around 1959 through 1962 that featured Mike Mainieri on vibraphone and Atlantic City native Sam Most on flute.

Given that the relatively gentle instrumentation of flute and vibes

seemed an unlikely one for a Buddy Rich group, it still worked, thanks to Mainieri and thanks to Most.

Most, often regarded as the “first jazz flutist,” was born in Atlantic City in 1930. He didn’t spend a lot of time at the shore. He was already on the road with various bands, including those led by Tommy Dorsey, Boyd Raeburn, and Shep Fields when he was just 18. He evolved quickly into a first-rate jazz improviser, and recorded his first outing as a leader when he was 23.

Most, who passed in 2013 at the age of 82, was the subject of a fine documentary which did not get the attention it deserved — Edmond Goff’s film, “Sam Most: Jazz Flutist.”

While the bebop era was arguably among the most innovative periods for jazz in musical history, that pivotal period of time, roughly 1945 to 1955, sadly produced its share of tragic figures. Drugs ultimately brought down legends like Charlie Parker, Fats Navarro, and Sonny Berman; and greatly affected the lives and careers of many others, including the relatively obscure jazz pianist, Joe Albany.

Albany, born in Atlantic City in 1924, had already turned pro at age 19 and moved to the West Coast to work with Benny Carter’s orchestra.

↘Continued from 23 Though he worked with icons like Miles Davis and Lester Young through the years, he struggled with drug addiction for decades. He cleaned up to an extent and made a comeback in the 1970s. Albany’s legend grew after his death in 1988 at the age of 63.

He was the subject of a documentary film, “Joe Albany: A Jazz Life,” drawn from a book written by his daughter called “Low Down: Junk, Jazz and Other Fairy Tales from Childhood.” “Low Down” was adapted for the motion picture screen. Reviews were mixed for the little-seen film, which was released briefly in 2014.

Gene Quill was a swinging, firstrate alto saxophonist who was only 15 years old when he joined the Atlantic City Musicians Union, Local 661, in 1943. The Atlantic City native was already leading his own band, playing Army bases and USO dances, while still in high school. Upon graduation, he joined Alex Bartha’s “house band” at the Steel Pier.

His career as a leader, sideman, and recording artist was long and impressive. His most well-known recordings—six of them, in fact — were made in tandem with fellow alto saxophonist Phil Woods. After touring the world more than once, Gene Quill moved back to Atlantic City in 1974

to join the remains of the Steel Pier house band, then called the “Steel Pier Show Band.”

Tragically, he was mugged while walking home from work on Memorial Day weekend in 1977, which left him paralyzed on his right side and blind in one eye. Two years later, he was well enough to resume playing on a very limited basis, but he spent the rest of life living in Pomona in relative obscurity until his death in 1988 at the age of 60.

Swing-era trumpet star Ziggy Elman was born as Harry Aaron Finkelman, in Philadelphia in 1914, but his family moved to Atlantic City when Finkelman/Elman was 4 years old. Growing up at the shore, he briefly played violin and trombone, but finally decided on the trumpet.

As “Ziggy Elman,” he joined Alex Bartha’s big band at the Steel Pier in 1936. His tenure in Bartha’s ensemble didn’t last long. Benny Goodman heard him with Bartha and hired Elman immediately (Goodman, along with many other name band leaders who appeared at the Steel Pier, often raided Bartha’s band for talent).

Atlantic County educator receives Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Spirit Award

tlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson presented the 34th annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Spirit Award on Jan. 16 to Leslie White-Coursey.

In commemoration of Dr. King’s birthday, the award is given out annually to a resident who lives by his example through being involved in the community and working to improve the lives of their fellow citizens.

White-Coursey, from Atlantic City, received the award during the first Board of County Commissioners meeting of the year, of which her husband, Commissioner Ernest D. Coursey is a member.

“Nobody has dedicated themselves to education and educating young people more than Leslie White-Coursey. This is an award that’s long overdue,” said Levinson as he recognized White-Coursey’s efforts.

New Winter Warrior Festival planned in Ocean City

new Presidents Day Weekend event will bring families and local businesses together in Ocean City in the heart of winter.

Wonderful possibilities were seen for Ocean City A Look Back

ne hundred and twenty years ago, R. Curtis Robinson, owner and editor of the Ocean City Sentinel, wrote: “With what Ocean City has as the twentieth century dawns, there are wonderful possibilities for the future. Look back during the past twenty years and note the progress.

No other seaside resort can begin to compare with it in achievements. The public spirit has been of a magnificent character. The city can well feel proud. It has all the modern conveniences of a greater city. It is possible to do business here under twentieth century conditions.”

Robinson knew not everyone agreed with his rosy picture of the city’s future. He wrote, “There is an

Changes coming for Eagles in offseason

in Dallas in 1992 – capped a shocking collapse that saw the Eagles lose six of their last seven games.

As a result, the only way Kelce will go to the Super Bowl now is if younger brother Travis and the Chiefs make it. And he’ll likely be sitting in a luxury box next to Taylor Swift.

The epic fail will no doubt spark changes.

Although Kelce will be retiring, he won’t be the only one leaving. He was among several players on the north side of 30, including defensive tackle Fletcher Cox (33), defensive end Brandon Graham (35), tackle Lane Johnson (33) and cornerback Darius Slay (33). Cornerback James Bradberry is 30, but played like he’s 50.

Johnson has proven he’s still among the league’s best at his position. Cox and Graham had decent years, but are no longer elite. Neither is Slay.

The defense was worse under Patricia than it ever was under Desai. The Eagles surrendered 31.3 points per game in losses to Arizona, the Giants and Bucs. Opposing receivers roamed free in the secondary and poor tackling was rampant.

The most alarming issue during the late-season collapse, however, was the lack of continuity, chemistry and accountability. Week after week, there were players-only meetings and promises of a rebound, but they bounced back with a thud, like a basketball without air.

That falls on the head coach.

It was ludicrous to suggest Sirianni was in danger of losing his job two months ago. The Eagles were a year removed from a narrow loss in the Super Bowl and owned the best record in the league.

But now his seat is hotter than the wings that will be served at Wing Fest in Atlantic City next month.

Roseman and Lurie will be asking some tough questions during the offseason. How Sirianni answers will determine if he’s back next season.

I think he deserves a year to turn the team around, but judging by the look of disappointment on Lurie’s face Monday night, I wouldn’t be

shocked if he’s looking for another job.

Maybe Jason Kelce can get him a bartending gig at Ocean Drive in Sea Isle City.

Packers wide receiver Bo Melton (Cedar Creek) will be playing at San Francisco Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. in an NFC divisional round game.

Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco (Vineland) will be at Buffalo in the AFC divisional round Sunday at 6:30 p.m. Pacheco, Melton’s teammate at Rutgers University, rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown in the Chiefs’ 26-7 victory over Miami last weekend.

Locally owned Alibi Gin shares its story

hether you spot him in the liquor store or at your local bar, if you’re a South Jer-

sey native, you’ll likely recognize that iconic, mischievous-looking fellow on the high wheeler who lives on the Alibi Gin logo, the story of which is equally interesting as the logo itself.

John Finger and Brian Ireland, co-owners of Alibi, have quite the story. I spoke with Ireland to get an inside scoop on the company, which started as a dream to own a bar and now thrives statewide as a result of dedication and community support.

During their time working in the service industry, the local AC bartenders began brainstorming, and their goals of simply owning a bar grew into something much more.

It wasn’t until the two were drinking gin and lemonades on a golf course that the idea came to be: that there was a gap in the market for a better gin, and that they’d be the ones to find their place in it.

That’s when the wheels started turning.

working at Ducktown Tavern in Atlantic City when operations began, they had to coordinate their off days and travel to Virginia together throughout the week to continue distilling. For a while their schedules consisted mostly of bartend, distill, repeat.

Although they had their product, managing the liquor regulations and logistics – down to the font of the government warning – was no simple feat. It took a few years to get everything approved, and once they finally did, they needed to conjure up enough industry support to find a distributor.

They brought half-ounce tasters to businesses throughout South Jersey and were able to come up with a list of about 100 supporters before bringing the product to a distributor.

Ultimately, it was that strength and variety of local support that helped the guys land a contract with Allied Beverage, a liquor distributor which doesn’t typically represent boutique companies like Alibi.

Finally, in June 2018, Alibi hit the bars and shelves. Within the first day, the gin sold out completely.

Finger has since moved down South to oversee production fulltime, while Ireland has stayed in South Jersey and primarily focuses on sales, marketing and promoting, and the two have run a well-oiled machine ever since.

For a two-man operation with no employees or investors, which was able to survive the pandemic when a lot of their competitors either lost significant support or went out of business, it’s all pretty impressive.

The key, it seems, is that since their dreams materialized, they were never truly alone in the making of it. Their local fanbase of South Jersey bartenders and patrons has been championing their efforts from day one.

There’s a sort of “boots on the ground mentality,” Ireland says.

Caesars’ show producer is ‘Hook’ed on Atlantic City

s recently noted in this column, the biggest casino-entertainment happening of 2023 was the early-summer debut of “The Hook” at Caesars Atlantic City.

The adults-only revue, which blends raunchy humor with top-shelf “Cirque”-style specialty acts is the first “permanent” AyCee presentation and the first ever staged in a venue built exclusively to house it. Given its special status, we figured it would be a good time to check in with creator-producer Ross Mollison to see how his groundbreaking baby is doing and get an update on what, if any changes have been-or might be—made.

Overall, offered Mollison during a recent phone chat, he is more than pleased with how the past six months have gone, both with the show itself and with Superfrico, the “psychedel-

ic-Italian” eatery that is an integral part of the “Hook” experience. We were especially interested in how things were going during this, the slowest time of the year for AyCee tourism.

“We’ve way exceeded our expectations,” he proclaimed in the accent of his native Melbourne, Australia.

“I just came back from Japan, where I was for a few weeks, and I went last night to see the show and went to Superfrico. I wanted to see the kind of crowd we’d have on what I thought would be the toughest day of the year—a mid-week day in early January after a storm--and, we still had a fantastic vibe in the restaurant and a fantastic vibe in the theater, and that's so exciting to see.

“And really, we are just learning the market, learning what makes sense on a monthly and yearly basis for a seasonal regional market like Atlantic City and we’re making adjustments. For instance, we've launched a [Sunday] brunch service that actually had its [debut the first weekend of the year] and it was a really big success; I think that will grow over time.”

As for the show, Mollison isn’t predicting any major changes, but, he does expect it to evolve over time as has his Las Vegas productions, includ-

ing the raucously hilarious, Caesars Palace-based “Absinthe.”

“If you could have a house of a hundred people laughing and loving it in there on a Wednesday night in early January, then you're on the road to success,” he reasoned. “It's [comic] Dick Marlin's show, but we continue to work on the comedy and I think the comedy just gets stronger and stronger.

“I believe the show has really found its feet and I think it's got a great position within the market. People are just loving it, and the fact is the audience numbers continue to grow. We had an enormous week--I think it may have even been our biggest week ever--the week after Christmas. And I think that bodes very well for what we're gonna do in summer of this year.”

Nonetheless, he added, there could be some cast changes.

“We're doing [contract] renewals now because we planned this a long time in advance and everyone was contracted for a year. [Cast members] are loving living in this area, and I think we're gonna see more people who want to come and live and work here.

We've got a few artists from Vegas who've expressed interest in being

here. And I think that will lead to more opportunities for us to mix it up a little bit.

“Just as in Vegas, which continues to grow year to year, and we continue to work on new ideas that go in there, we will do that with the look, and we will continue to see Dick Marlin's show evolve over time.

“One of our biggest assets in our Vegas shows is repeat visitation. We have one guy who comes back to “Atomic Saloon” [at the Venetian] so regularly, he's nearly about to have seen it a hundred times. And I think that's because we do constantly evolve the shows, and we will be doing that in Atlantic City. But, it'll still be fundamentally the same property with new artists coming in to supplement that.”

Orlando swan song at Resorts The bad news is that Tony Orlando, who has been an AyCee headliner for some four decades (and who is one of show business’ true “good guys”) has announced his retirement from performing. The good news is that the guy who (along with his two co-stars in Dawn) topped the charts in the 1970s with hits like “Candida” and “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole’ Oak Tree” isn’t calling it quits without one last visit to town.

Orlando, who turns 80 in April will perform March 16 at Resorts Casino Hotel. It will be a “full-circle” moment of sorts as the first legal casino east of Nevada was where he made his local gaming hall debut in 1983.

s part of a new history of Tony Mart’s, “The Legacy of Tony Mart,” we have put together a list of more than 130 entertainers who performed during the 38 years of good times at the legendary Somers Point nightclub.

Over the past three weeks, we have been sharing important and amusing anecdotes about some of the greatest and most musically important entertainers and groups that ever played at Tony Mart’s.

We have our favorites, but readers are also invited to weigh in.

Gunther’s Bus

With an entire chapter dedicated to them in “The Legend of Tony Mart,” Gunther’s Bus was one of the greatest of all the groups to play at The Mart. Easily in the top 10, the Foti Brothers were the heart and soul of the iconic nightclub.

my Bittle, The Bus could do everything from Jackie Wilson’s “Higher and Higher” and “Evil Ways,” when it was a big hit for Santana, to the long version of “In A Gotta Da Vida,” an entire side of “Abbey Road” by The Beatles, and the very best covers of Blind Faith & The Spencer Davis Group, as Art Foti was gifted with that Stevie Winwood sound. Carl Foti could sing Kenny Rogers and the pre-disco Bee Gees incomparably.

Supa Heat

Coming at the time of the Woodstock generation, they played Crosby, Stills and Nash, and entertained in an uplifting way, covering the famous gospel pop song, “Oh Happy Day”

by The Edwin Hawkins Singers, and a fabulous version of “Suspicious Minds” by Elvis Presley – all performed by the guy we called Ricky Supa Heat, who had that hip-shaking style. It was one of the many super groups that played the Philly scene, so much that they became known as “Supa Philly.” They went on to be very popular for many years up and down the East Coast.

Grant Smith and The Power

This was a totally hot nine-piece horn band with four horns, featuring their good-looking, talented frontman, Grant Smith, who could really move onstage. This was “blue-eyed soul,” known as one of the best horn bands out there doing Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears, and the Stax Records soul band sound.

They were the rage of the shore when they played Tony Mart’s for two weeks in 1970. As great as Gunther’s Bus was, they actually left to make room for Grant Smith and The Power on the main stage right in the middle of Tony Mart’s.

One of the most treasured mementos in the scrapbook is their impressive band photograph – just what a nine-piece big band should look like. The picture is dedicated to Carmen Marotta, “the best little club owner in the world.” Carmen Marotta was about 14 years old and idolized all of these performers… every night, all summer long!

Grant Smith and The Power Dawn (Telma Hopkins and Joyce Vincent Wilson). Tony Mart paid them $500 each night.

Oliver

He was a great singer with a strong voice, a true gentleman and professional performer. Oliver played several multi-week engagements, performing both of his hits, “Jean,” and the famous song from the Broadway play “Hair,” “Good Morning Starshine.”

The performances by Oliver were important because he drew large crowds and helped Tony Mart immensely when things were beginning to get soft in the early ’70s. The shows were special and a little-known chapter in the history of Tony Mart’s.

Locals and tourists alike loved them.

Mace with Tony Cherry

Tony Cherry (Tony Cherubini) brought the first group called Mace to Tony Mart’s, and did the famous and familiar “sexy frontman with a cover band” routine, which was so popular at the Jersey Shore and everywhere.

He was entertaining, good looking, well-liked and appreciated by Tony Mart himself.

This was the second Mace group led by Joe Cimino and fronted by

PJ. There will be much elaboration about them in the book about the difficulties that Tony Mart’s faced in the mid- to late-’70s. We explore the tribulations of the Tony Mart family during this less successful period.

This second Mace, after Tony Cherry left the band, is central to that period.

Their leader was a drummer named Joe Cimino. He and Tony Mart had a respectful, warm working relationship. They were a good cover band that did solid versions of The Grateful Dead, Jackson Browne and the Eagles. But most of all, they were the group that introduced the Asbury Park sound of Springsteen prevalently into Tony Mart’s. There was David Bowie and The Doobie Brothers as well: “Suffragette City” and “Long Train Runnin’” four times a night each!

The bass player, David Lynne, was a great guy and a good friend. The keyboard player, John Leafhead, was a fine musician and pretty much the musical director. Joe Cimino was a strong, driving drummer, and they could move the dance floor and keep things rolling. One of the greatest attractions for Tony Mart was the fact that they worked very reasonably.

These were difficult times for Tony Mart’s, but this version of Mace was faithful, reliable and steadfastly employed by Tony Mart. Replacing the slick and polished Terry Cherry in this band was “PJ” a hippie kind of frontman who had a rock star attitude and demeanor that overwhelmed his modicum of talent. He got the job done; but again, this was certainly not a bright spot in this musical period at The Mart.

Jordan’s Cancer Journey Fundraiser Saturday in AC

ordan’s Cancer Journey: Family is everything and so is our health. Any parent of a child in ill health will do everything they can to help their child get better. No task is too great; nothing is out of their way if it will help their loved one fully recover.

To that end, the Atlantic City music community will come together Saturday, Jan. 20, for Jordan’s Cancer Journey Fundraiser to help pay for the vast medical costs incurred by young Jordan Thompson from ongoing treatments.

The benefit features regional and local indie rock groups including Painkiller, Full Blown Cherry, Chuck Thomas and the Bad MFers, The Atomic Bats, vocalist Camille K (pictured above), among others.

It happens 6-11 p.m. at Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall (music begins at 5 p.m. there), and 6 p.m. at Rhythm & Spirits, both located in Tennessee Avenue’s Orange Loop section. Your $10 donation gets you a pass to both venues featuring 12 bands.

“She starts the new year with clear scans and a hopeful future,” Weiss told us recently. “(This event is) hosted by the world’s funniest person, Michelle Tomko. The Thompson Family would also like to give a very special thank you to Terri Paynter for putting this fundraiser together,” adds Weiss.

Speaking of Rhythm & Spirits, it has emerged as a destination place to not only hear quality live jazz (local artists Angela Burton and Eddie T. Morgan Jr. are regular performers here), but recently, rock and singer-songwriters as well.

Last weekend we caught sets by always-busy Amy Elizabeth and Cigar Box Stompers, among others, in a show presented by the aforementioned Norstep Productions.

The room is small but cozy and is definitely a welcome addition to the area for musicians looking to play out live.

Elsewhere This Weekend: Deadheads rejoice! Jawn of the Dead plays Anchor Rock Club on New York Avenue in AC this Friday, Jan. 19, presenting their ‘Grateful Dead and Other Jawns’ show starting 8 p.m.

On Saturday, Jan. 20 at 8:30 p.m., nationally known comedian Tina Friml performs at the Anchor. Friml is a New York-based performer who went into standup comedy following

an upbringing in local theater and a decade as a songwriter. She was named a 2019 Just For Laughs New Face and has appeared on, among others, “The Drew Barrymore Show” 'Bananamores,’ 2019's New York Comedy Festival, and the NBC Comedy Spotlight Series as part of their “Women In Comedy Special.”

“I get that I'm unconventional. I’m disabled, but I'm not totally committed to the lifestyle. A lot of people when they see me, they think I suffer from cerebral palsy, which I don't. I have cerebral palsy,” Friml said when she appeared on “The Tonight Show.”

Finally: Shout out to one of our own, the ubiquitous Marc Berman who not only successfully transitioned to Old Town Bay St. Louis, Miss., with wife Susan, but has firmly ensconced himself in the town’s music and cultural scene with regular updates on his podcast. Berman served as the digital media director here at Shore Local Newsmagazine until last September and helped me a lot when I moved back to AC and started writing for Shore Local.

There are restaurants in Atlantic City that can claim they have a better cocktail menu at their brunch.

And while that is entirely subjective, there is no other Sunday brunch in Atlantic City – or perhaps the entire state of New Jersey – that can claim they have a brunch that is more fun than Superfrico at Caesars Atlantic City.

In a city once known for its lavish, over-the-top brunches, Superfrico feeds a nearly starved audience as casinos around the city have closed up shop on their brunches for budget concerns, leaving the door open to independents like Superfrico, owned by the California-based Spiegelworld, which is also the parent company that operates The Hook, the rowdy, hilarious, creative and sometimes raunchy act adjacent to Superfrico which is the reason this brunch is so fun!

“Atlantic City parties are always the best parties,” said Impresario Extraordinaire and Spiegelworld Founder Ross Mollison, who said this is the first brunch Spiegelworld has ever offered. “It's a new thing for us.

We have actually been working on a brunch in Vegas, but this is a new thing. I was very much seeing a void.

We were working out how a seasonal market like Atlantic City operates, and we realized we were getting so much fantastic support from the local community, but they don’t necessarily want to come out and see the show at 8 p.m. on a Sunday night; they prefer to see it at 2 in the afternoon on a Sunday. So, we said, ‘What if we open the restaurant and they can have a

But, no brunch would be worth a cracked egg without amazing food and service, and that’s where Executive Chef Nick Faucher and General Manager Giulietta Consalvo enter.

Faucher, a great chef and casino veteran, put together an amazingly concise and delicious menu that has something for everyone despite its brevity.

Standouts include the crab cake Benedict featuring jumbo lump crab over a potato pancake with roasted tomato Hollandaise accompanied by watercress salad; a Western Italian frittata with prosciutto, caramelized onions, roasted long hots and potatoes; and the Superfrico steak and eggs consisting of a 7-ounce grilled New York strip with sunny side-up eggs and breakfast potato.

Our favorites included a killer brunch burger that is hand butchered and blended by Faucher and his team that features a blend of Joyce Farms beef and filet mignon, a mixture of cheeses with the extra sharp cheddar prevailing, homemade tomato jam and house-made pickles. Add that poached egg on top.

The other impressive dish is an item that didn’t even make it on the menu when we dined there but will be added soon. Faucher is putting together a super high-end cheese plate with some of the best cheeses you will find in the world. The variety we had consisted of one of the best creamy triple crème bries we ever spread on a cracker to aged Manchego to truffle cheddar and accompanied with some killer local honey and gourmet cherry and fig spreads.

Stuffed French Toast Superfrico is also getting lots of buzz for its thick but light and airy Detroit-style pizza, so there are four varieties at brunch, including the OG with mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and Sicilian oregano; the Hackney’s Deviled Crab with jumbo lump crab, chives and tarragon named after the once-famous Atlantic City restaurant; the pepperoni and chili with Ezzo pepperoni, hot honey and pickled jalapenos; and a brunch pizza, which is the OG with quail eggs and housemade sausage that is worth the visit alone.

“We created a special brunch pizza that is just fabulous, as well as a special menu for the whole event,” Mollison said. “The atmosphere in the restaurant is so warm, so intimate, so beautiful, I think people just love being there. But what makes the pizza here so damn good? The pizza in Vegas is great, but the pizza in Atlantic City is just fantastic! Is it the water for the dough? Maybe, but ultimately it’s the staff, the chefs, the way they prepare it and how incredible it is. I was just in Tokyo that has this pizza there called Savoy that some consider the best pizza in the world, and our pizza gives it a run for its money.”

The service, overseen by Consalvo, is always top notch, and the creative and gorgeous cocktails are certainly part of the fun.

Check out the Highwire with Absolut Elyx, Mr. Black Coffee Liqueur, cold brew, Linie Aquavit and Demerara; and the Pool Boy with Don Julio Blanco, passion fruit, vanilla, Fino Sherry and lime. There are also about a dozen wines and sparklings available by the glass.

If you ever had dinner at Superfrico, known for its psychedelic Italian menu, you know The Hook performers often pop in the dining room for appearances that separate Superfrico’s brunch from the rest in the fun category.

And that is certainly the case at Superfrico’s brunch. During our 90-minute meal, we saw everyone

from the two hosts – yes, we love Dick Marlin – a magician, a comedy dance duo, two muscular sailors offering temporary tattoos and other performers.

That is just a tease for the 2 p.m. performance of The Hook every Sunday where cirque meets vaudeville.

The adults-only show is the only yearround production that follows in the footsteps of Spiegelworld’s Vegas creations like “Absinthe.”

“The show is just getting better and better, and that’s what we find … that our shows continually improve as the audiences respond to them,” Mollison said. “The audiences just love that style of humor. In the 13 years we have been in Vegas, we learned that by constantly updating our shows, we constantly create excitement because they want to see how our shows develop. People fall in love with our shows in Vegas and they come back every time they visit. That’s our plan for Atlantic City.

Most of our cast wants to stay in Atlantic City, and those who decide to move on gives us the opportunity to introduce some of the acts who have worked for us in Vegas or others we are talking to from around the world.”

Mollison said he is encouraged by the early success of The Hook and Superfrico, but realizes it takes time to become the fixture here in Atlantic City like they are in Las Vegas.

“This is our first year, but I must say the week after Christmas was the biggest week we ever had, and that includes all summer,” Mollison said. “That was a monster surprise.

The weekends are strong, but we still have work to do midweek. I think it’s going to continue to build offseason because I think there are more and more people living in that region 12 months a year and looking for something, so it will continue to build.”

Mollison thinks 2024 is going to be a turning point for Superfrico, The Hook and Atlantic City.

Wine: The tannic effect

“Tannins” is a wine term I am frequently asked to explain to folks who come into the store. I’ve found that even wine enthusiasts who have enjoyed wine for many years find the term to be confusing. So, let’s take a deeper dive into the topic.

Scientifically speaking, tannins are a phenolic compound. According to sciencedirect.com, phenolic compounds are among the most common chemicals found in many plants throughout the world. They are one of the most significant secondary metabolites (the most important components behind the health benefits and medicinal properties of plants) and are largely responsible for the antioxidant attributed to many “superfoods.”

Tannins are present in the skins of wine grapes. After harvesting the grapes, the winemaking process

continues with what is commonly called the crushing of the grapes.

I know we all just had an image of Lucille Ball stomping grapes in a gigantic barrel in Italy, right? In modern winemaking, Lucille stays on the sidelines as crushing is accomplished by a machine that very gently squeezes the grapes enough to separate the juice, referred to as “must” in wine-speak, from the skins, seeds, and stems, called “pomace”.

Fun wine fact: The overwhelming majority of wine grapes have clear juice, regardless of whether the grape itself is red or white.

Without the skins having contact with the juice during fermentation, most wines would be white. In other words, if the winemaker’s goal is to produce a white wine, he or she removes the skins before the juice continues to ferment. The exceptions are grapes referred to as “teinturier grapes.” Alicante Bouschet, a grape from Portugal, is one such exception.

See why this varietal is a favorite of mine by trying the Cartuxa Evora Tinto Reserva 2017. This outstanding red wine from the Alentejo region of Portugal is 70% Alicante Bouschet and 30% Aragonez and is, in my experience, the best example of a wine

made from a teinturier grape.

If a red wine is the winemaker’s objective, the “must” and the “pomace” remain in contact during maceration. Simply stated, maceration is a soaking process where the tannins are gradually transferred from the skins to the juice. The juice will take on the color, the flavor, and the antioxidant qualities discussed above.

The duration of maceration depends on how tannic the winemaker wants the wine to be. For most red wines, maceration can be as short as a week or two, and as long as a month or so.

As you may have guessed, rosé wine is accomplished by allowing the skins to macerate for a very short time in the juice, resulting in the familiar pink color. In general, the longer the skins have contact with the juice, the higher the concentration of tannins.

The thickness of the grape skin can also play a part in this. It is all part of the science and artistry of winemaking.

In addition to color, tannins affect wine by adding to the flavor and mouthfeel of the wine. Prior to fermentation, wine grape juice is sweet. In fermentation, yeast consumes much of the sugar and turns it into alcohol and carbon

dioxide. The sugar that remains is called residual sugar and is a major determinant of how sweet or dry the wine is. Tannins have a slightly bitter taste that, together with remaining residual sugar, adds to the complexity of red wine. Bitterness may not sound appealing. However, think of how tea, coffee, and dark chocolate have significant bitter components but are still considered delicious. It is the same for wines.

Finally, tannins give wines an astringent effect, commonly referred to as dryness. As mentioned, tannins are a phenolic compound, which binds proteins. The saliva on your tongue and in your mouth is full of proteins that the tannins bind, making your tongue, gums and palate feel dry.

This is why high-tannin wines pair well with steak. The tannic effect counters the fattiness of the meat.

If you would like to experience the tannic effect of wine for yourself, buy a bottle of Pinot Noir (a relatively low-tannin red wine), a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon (a relatively high-tannin wine), and a bottle of Syrah/Shiraz. A couple of Pinot Noir options to consider would be the Domaine Valéry Le P'tit Renaudat from France, or the Montinore Estate Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley, Oregon. For the Cabernet Sauvignon, how about a Cab-based blend from Bordeaux, such as the Daou Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, California? For a Shiraz, try the 19 Crimes-Shiraz from Australia or the Truchard - Syrah 2021 from California. Pour a tasting of each and observe them side-by-side. Notice the variations in darkness and opacity of the wine from the least to the most tannic. Take a couple of sips of each in order of least to most tannic and notice the astringent effect of the more tannic wines. And, of course, enjoy the wine!

Do tannins cause headaches?

According to Harvard Health Publishing Online, maybe, for those who are particularly sensitive to tannins, but for the majority, no. The most likely suspect is the alcohol. Alcohol can cause blood vessels to dilate, thus causing headaches. If you are someone who gets headaches when drinking red wine, drink a glass of water for each glass of wine to help alleviate the problem.

Funeral Services: Changing views and values, part two

Welcome back to my column as we dive into my professional insight on the changing attitude about the value of the deceased, and how to honor them.

Some people would argue that funerals are costly, broken and exploitative. There is an argument to be made here since funerals can be expensive based on what a family wants and what they choose. The median cost of a traditional funeral with burial is between $9,000 and $10,000 depending on what part of the country you live in, and that is not a small amount. Full-service cremations are a little less and cremation memorial services are less than that, but playing devil’s advocate here, how much does a wedding cost? Some people celebrate a union between two people as a major life event and it is nothing to spend $20,000 to $30,000 on it.

Weddings and funerals are major life

events and I feel they deserve to be celebrated.

So, cost may be a factor as to why people choose not to honor an individual when they pass. Another factor is avoidance. We as a society hate to be reminded that we are mortal.

According to Sarah Chavez, one of the founders of the death positive movement and executive director of The Order of the Good Death, at the core of our relationship with dying and death is our obsession with youth.

Sarah says, “We’re a youth-centric society. I think a very large part of that is because of our fear of death. The U.S. is the largest antiaging market in the world, spending millions of dollars on anti-wrinkle cream, hair dye and cosmetic procedures. We hide our elderly away in nursing homes and hospitals to prolong their lives out of sight because they remind us of our own mortality.” Sarah may have a point. Whenever my firm has a death of a young person in their teens or twenties, I notice the young friends have a horrible time accepting the fact of the death. It’s like they can’t fathom it. Most young people feel that they will live forever and are indestructible.

Seeing someone who died young makes people uncomfortable. Hence people may avoid doing any type of

funeral service because they want to avoid any type of discomfort.

The same could be said of nursing homes. I always hear from people “I hate going to visit grandma in the home, it’s so depressing”. People hate going and want to avoid it because it makes them think that one day, they will probably end up there and at some point, they will die. This is not a fun fact and therefore, we do or not do things to avoid it.

So now we have identified cost and avoidance of mortality as reasons to avoid honoring a loved one, but I think there are a few more. The next would be avoiding religious customs or lack of any. More often than not, funerals and memorial services have religious ceremonies or some religious aspects.

If a person doesn’t believe in the afterlife, a traditional funeral might not feel right to them. I have found personally in working at Jeffries and Keates funeral home that if there is a lack of some sort of faith or religious instruction people tend to do the bare minimum just to get things over with.

In their mind there is no difference in the death of a person and when a candle gets blown out. This to me as a believer is disheartening, but that seems to be the case for me.

Today’s world is becoming increasingly “me” centered, with individuals focusing on their own wants and needs rather than those around them.

As virtual communication replaces face to face interactions, selfishness replaces selflessness and an evolution toward a self-involved attitude becomes normalized, leaving little motivation to consider what others may require.

Regardless of reasoning electing not to have some sort of service for a loved one is a very selfish option.

Because a funeral or memorial service is not just for the immediate family but for all of the deceased’s extended family, friends, coworkers, and essentially the whole community where that person lived. But this thought process goes by the wayside too often in the increasingly nihilistic approach to life held by so many of the younger generations.

Estate planning for your digital and cyber assets

hen it comes to estate planning, I think it’s imperative to go in-depth with clients.

They’ve worked very hard to get to where they are, and I have worked very hard with them to plan for both their retirement and their estate. The last thing anyone wants to see is all of that hard work negated at the end of their life. I’ve said this a million times, but stop putting off your estate planning and deal with it today!

Even people with well-thoughtout documents are often shocked at how much still needs to be done after a loved one passes. The process is often long and draining on the executor(s) left to settle the estate. One way to help is to not overlook some of the seemingly smaller but still very important details, such as digital or cyber assets. Not only do these issues

need to be addressed, but they are often difficult to resolve because the accounts are often password-protected or very challenging to access.

What do we mean when we say digital and cyber assets? They would include things such as: 1. Online banking, including bill pay, linked accounts, auto withdrawals 2. Mobile devices such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, etc.

3. Email accounts. Some people have multiple accounts, so this includes all of your emails.

4. Social media profiles including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.

5. Sites that contain music, photos and other personal information 6. Even your computer itself One way to help an executor is to address these issues right in the estate documents themselves. Give consent to them to be able to both access these assets and control them on your behalf. Think about what you want to happen to those assets after you’re gone. Do you want your Facebook page to remain active for example? If so, for how long? Can people post things to your pages?

Once you figure out what you want to happen to these assets, document and tell someone where to find all of the account information (ideally with the rest of your estate documents), such as a list of accounts and items as well as your login IDs and passwords.

Consider using a password app so they only need to have one password to get to all the others.

These are just a few examples of items that should be addressed along with all of your other estate planning wishes. Addressing them now along with the rest of your estate will help reduce the burden on your heirs.

Estate planning, as you can see, can become quite complex. I always advise clients to seek out the advice of a qualified estate planning attorney to address all of their needs as opposed to trying to oversimplify things by doing it online. Not everything in life is that easy. Albert Einstein said it best, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler”!

Money says: Get on my list

f you haven’t read last week’s column, “Have you ever talked to Money?”, then I suggest you click on Shore Local Newsmagazine’s website and check it out right now. You need some background information about my interview with Money in order to wrap your head around this week’s Six Words on a Boardwalk Bench – “Money says: Get on my list.” Believe me, you want to be on that list!

Money goes where he is commanded.

Last week, Money let us in on one of his biggest trade secrets. He can only go where he is commanded to go. Only people with money can command him!

That’s right. Money is waiting for the command. If you want more money, then you have to find

people who already have him and convince them to command him to go to you. You do this by creating value.

But, Money is always updating his list.

Being Money isn’t easy. It takes a lot of coordination. He’s constantly running around, especially these days when transactions take place in a split second. Money never stops moving. Without his list, he’d never keep track of where he is supposed to go next. You need to be on that list if you want more money than you have now.

Money leaves trails. He makes cents.

Let’s take a second look at my experiences as a restaurant owner. As I mentioned last week, I would buy steaks from a supplier. The supplier would buy whole beef portions from a butcher. When my supplier wanted more steaks, he’d tell Money to go to the butcher. When I wanted to buy steaks, my money went to the supplier. Finally, when my customers paid me for dinner at the restaurant, they commanded their money to go to me.

Here’s the big news. Every time Money changed hands, he left a

little trail behind. Everyone in the transaction chain got to keep a little bit of the money that was traveling through our hands. That trail of cents is called “profit,” and it is the part of Money that each of us got to keep.

But what about your customers?

In the example above, everyone made money, except my customers.

So, where did they get their money? Simple – they went to work for someone. The boss commanded Money to go to them. Everyone in this whole trail of transactions was on Money’s list. Everyone gave up their money in order to get what they wanted, and everyone got to keep a little money along the way.

That’s why you need to be on Money’s list right now, and every day of your life! You need to get busy creating something of value, so that as Money passes through your hands, he leaves a little bit extra behind. When you have enough little pieces of money stored up, you can use it to create more money by getting on another one of Money’s lists.

“Time” gets you on the list.

Take another look at the transaction trail above. The butcher, supplier, the customers, and I all gave up some of our time in order to qualify for our spot on Money’s list. The butcher met with ranchers, went to auctions, etc. The supplier cut the meat into steaks, stored it, etc.

I had to buy the steaks, hire cooks, design the menu, etc. My customers worked in an office for forty hours per week while their boss managed her company.

Along the way, each of us gave up our time to add value to the transaction trail. That increased the value of the entire transaction trail. Time was the common element that got each of us on the list. We all owned our own time, and we used it to keep a little piece of the money that passed through our hands.

Time is money. Don’t add. Multiply!

When I interviewed Money, he told me a huge secret. “Bill,” Money said. “Most people are really busy all day long, thinking they are making more of me by working more hours each day. For every hour they work, they add a little bit of money into their paycheck. The problem is, there are only so many hours in the day, so they can only add so much of me, and no more. They need to multiply their money by putting me to work for them, instead of them working for me.”

You can invest time or money.

I want all my readers to carefully read these next few paragraphs because they come straight from Money himself. I learned it from him through my many hours of interviewing him. Okay, ready? Here we go…

People with money want your time. People with time want your money. Selling your time adds money. Investing your money multiplies both time and money!

Did you get that? If you sell your time by working, you only have so many hours in the day to trade. You can only be on a few lists. Maybe you are on your boss’ list, and you take a second job, and are on that boss’ list as well – and wham, you are out of time.

If you invest your Money, you can be on as many lists as you want because Money is working for you.

Meanwhile, someone else (who didn’t have enough money) spends their time working on your behalf.

How about another week of money?

Old Dog Vestibular Syndrome

atching my oldest girl, IchiBan, age has been both a rewarding and terrifying experience.

She is 13 years old and has definitely slowed down. Luckily, she is otherwise healthy and is living her best Bull terrier life.

Last weekend, she woke me up. She had started panting, trembling, and struggling to stand up in bed. When I turned the lights on, I immediately saw that her head was tilted to the side. Her eyes were bouncing severely from side to side.

The poor old girl was having what is known as vestibular disease. The condition is also known as “old dog vestibular disease” because it is primarily seen in older dogs.

The vestibular system is located in the inner and middle ear. It’s the part of the central nervous system that is responsible for balance and spatial awareness. Vestibular disease occurs

when there is a sudden disturbance of balance that can be a result of inflammation of the central nervous system, cancer, ear tumors, stroke, or even just wax build-up in the inner ear.

Symptoms appear all of a sudden.

They will include your dog becoming immediately disoriented, wobbly on their feet, or unable to stand at all.

Symptoms also include a very obvious head tilt, vomiting, walking in a circle, and nystagmus, which is the bouncing of the eyeball from side to side.

IchiBan appeared to be very dizzy.

Her nystagmus was quite severe. As

a result, she vomited once. When I stood her up, she walked in a circle.

An episode of vestibular disease in dogs can last for minutes or hours.

The best thing you can do at home is to restrict their movement and comfort them. I keep Cerenia (an antiemetic often used for car sickness in dogs) in the house, as well as the sed-

atives Gabapentin and Trazodone. To help my dog through the event, I gave her the prescribed amount of Cerenia to help with nausea and Gabapentin to relax her so she could sleep. While IchiBan normally sleeps in bed with me, I opted to crate her for the rest of the night so she would not be further injured walking on shaky legs.

Contact your vet if you notice signs of vestibular disease in your dog. For dogs younger than 13 years old, the vet will need to rule out other causes of the symptoms. They might order an X-ray or MRI to make sure there are not any tumors in the brain or ears. They may also check for an ear infection.

In older dogs like IchiBan, the vestibular disease is usually considered idiopathic. That means that the vestibular disease is likely just due to age. For older dogs, treatment is supportive. Since idiopathic vestibular disease often gets better on its own, treatment is just to make your dog feel better in the meantime.

If your older dog has a sudden episode of vestibular disease, don’t panic. The most severe symptoms seem to happen in the first 48 hours.

Slowly, IchiBan is returning to normal. After about 3 days, her eyes were no longer bouncy, her head was less tilted, and she could walk on her

own. I opted to take her to see one of her amazing vets, Dr. Amy Hinze at Winslow Animal Hospital, for an acupuncture session and a chiropractic adjustment. I believe it gave her a great deal of relief. Since her head tilt was so severe the first few days after, I think she had a hard time figuring out how to eat from her dish. During that period, I did hand-feed her. She is now able to stand up to eat from her raised food station. In some dogs, the head tilt may be permanent, and they may have a lasting wobble when they walk. IchiBan seems to improve a bit each day. I am giving her whatever supportive care I can and cherishing every moment with my old lady.
