t's great news for Hamilton Commons which is located at 160 Black Horse Pike, Mays Landing. Chuck E. Cheese, Ross Dress for Less, Marshalls, Big Lots and the rest of the retail neighborhood are getting a new neighbor: Grocery Outlet. The retail center has been faced with several vacant stores within the past few years. The Grocery Outlet will serve as a great niche anchor store for the center. The target opening is for early spring of 2024.

Grocery Outlet is a national chain company that was established in 1946. It was founded by Jim Read.

He started his first store selling military surplus at deep discounts. Now from that modest beginning, the 3rd generation is at the helm with a thriving business consisting of over 400 stores with 1.5 million customers per week.

Singing the songs of every season

From the Editor

W

elcome back, Shore Local readers, and Happy N ew Year. We are excited to be back after a one-week reprieve.

As you may know by now, for the first time in Shore Local history, we will be publishing weekly throughout 2024. There is a lot of love and labor that goes into a weekly publication, so before we hit the ground running, we wanted to ensure our family and staff had an enjoyable rest.

During that time, Bob and I had the opportunity to relax and recharge with some live music and great company at Renault Winery’s Vinter Wonderland in Egg Harbor City. The venue has been completely transformed into a beautiful winter wonderland complete with an ice skating rink, blazing fire pits, twinkling lights, warm igloos and more.

As we wandered into the restaurant to warm our bones, we were thrilled to discover another world of entertainment going on inside.

Two talented musicians played request-only tunes to a lively crowd

of all ages and generations, each dancing and singing to their favorite songs. Of course, we joined in and sang along as the music transported us to fond memories of yesteryear.

Music can transcend time in a way nothing else can. The melodies of our past not only elicited the images of our more youthful selves but also the unique feelings associated with them. Decades were erased as we sang along to the soundtrack of our college years.

Our young adult daughter happened to be with us that night and reveled in some of the music from the early 2000s. But when we went nuts over '80s or '90s songs, she remarked with a twinge of envy that she wasn’t born sooner: “You're lucky you've lived longer; music can transport you through more decades and seasons

of your life.”

As I took in the scene, recognizing the multigenerational love of music that was going on around me, I held onto my daughter’s words. I am lucky to have lived so long and have the privilege of amassing such vast experiences.

That made me wonder about the incredible life of the beloved Absecon Lighthouse keeper, Buddy Grover. Buddy passed away this week at the beautiful age of 96.

I can’t help but wonder what type of music brought out his fondest memories of the past or the points of view one must have at 96 years old.

As the community mourns Buddy, we can only hope that he is somewhere smiling down on us with that unmistakable grin.

As we head into a new year, I look forward to the memories we haven’t made yet with the people we have yet to meet. This is set to be a record year for Shore Local! We can’t wait to bring you more local news, feel-good stories, events and happenings, live music, entertainment, and more so you can continue adding great memories to your filing cabinet for future nostalgia.

Buddy Grover, legendary lighthouse keeper dies at 96

ne of Atlantic City’s bright lights was extinguished last week when Buddy Grover, the city’s most famous lighthouse keeper, passed away at the age of 96.

“Our lighthouse shines a little dimmer today because he has left us” wrote Milton Glenn III, the Manager of Operations and Education at the Absecon Lighthouse. Buddy was a keeper there for the last 14 years and was the face of the lighthouse.

Jean Muchanic, Executive Director of the Absecon Lighthouse described Buddy as an “incredible, amazing, witty, and wonderful person.” In her post on Facebook she added “Not enough can ever be said to describe his unique and loving personality. He became friends with everyone he met and was literally loved by all.”

Tributes flooded in on social media when word of his passing spread.

“Buddy lived his life well and brought so much joy to everyone he knew and everyone who visited the lighthouse. He told me several times that he was a ghost in training, so I expect to see him around,” wrote Chris Liss, a frequent climber of the lighthouse.

football team in state history to lead an impressive 14-0 season. This record-breaking season was worth celebrating this past Saturday at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City.

Families, friends, students, and faculty members filled Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena for a joyous pep rally, filled with guest speeches, the school’s marching band, cheerleaders, and trophies. Many who were in attendance brandished the school colors of green and white, some in custom-made jackets and shoes, with the sights and sounds of pom-poms waving proudly in the crowd.

During the event, the Mainland Marching Band not only performed for the crowd but was given special recognition for their successes. In addition to taking home the USBands NJ State Group 1A Championship, the band also won the National Group 1A title. Each band member was given full acknowledgement, with special honors to each senior member. The Mainland High School Cheerleaders also led in a routine.

For the hard-working teammates, it was a day filled with surprises.

Before each player was recognized, a special montage video played on the big screen, with messages of congratulations from some of the most well-known icons in sports and entertainment, including Lil Baby, Shaquelle O’Neal, Jason Kelce, Andy Reid, Dolphins Wide Receiver Nat Moore, Hall of Fame Coach Jimmy Johnson, and Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady, just to name a few. Even Hall of Fame wrestling legend Hulk Hogan chimed in, flexing his signature muscles and sunglasses.

Jim Allen, Chairman of Hard Rock International, presented Marrone with a custom Hard Rock guitar and a check for $25,000 for The Alcove Center, an organization aiding grieving children and families throughout the South Jersey area. Allen grew up in Northfield and is a proud Mainland alumnus, graduating in 1978. Having attended the championship game at Rutgers, he spoke about the team’s successes, with a few words of motivation for the players and attendees.

Superintendent Mark Marrone said this win and celebration was the most humbling experience he has witnessed. “It’s all about the kids. In my eighteen-year career at Mainland, it has been about the kids.”

Absecon’s 2023 Citizen of the Year Award announced, dinner to be held

he 2023 Absecon Citizen of the Year Award was recently announced by the Absecon Republican Club.

The 18th recipient is 24-year-old Jacob Hackett.

The prestigious, nonpartisan award is given to an individual who has made a major contribution to the City of Absecon and the Atlantic County area. Hackett, who has cerebral palsy, is a strong advocate for disability rights throughout Absecon, Atlantic County and the State of New Jersey.

He’s been an active member in his hometown for as long as he can remember by volunteering in the

Methodist church and with local nonprofits. Hackett is the social media assistant for FACES 4 Autism. He also posts on social media and coordinates volunteers for the South Jersey Field of Dreams in Absecon, which his family started.

Besides his volunteer work, Hackett tirelessly advocates and secures access for disabled citizens.

inaccessible buildings and transportation to the attention of councilmen.

A point he often tries to show others is that it’s important to be persistent with council people when trying to make changes for accessibility because they need to be reminded since they have a lot on their plates.

“Even though you might not get something right away, remain positive and be persistent,” said Hackett. “Just because I have a disability, it doesn’t stop me from what I want to do.”

He also says that if you see something wrong, step up and talk to those council people in local communities.

On Dec. 15, Hackett’s mother sent him an email asking him to send an updated resume. Assuming it was for a job that someone wanted to hire him for, he didn’t think much of it.

However, shortly after Christmas, the individual who’s in charge of the Absecon Citizen of the Year Award, whom he’s known for years through church, called him to let him know he was voted in.

“Just to have this backing from the community and the organizations I've worked for means so much," said Hackett. “People in the community are seeing what I’m doing, and I’m being praised for my efforts. It’s given

me a deeper sense of meaning and being grateful for what I have.”

There will be a dinner honoring Hackett on Monday, Jan 22, 2024 at Villa Rifici on E. White Horse Pike in Absecon.

Shining light on those that made the holiday season bright

want to start The Light this year by shining some light on two great holiday toy giveaways that ended 2023, and the first big community event of 2024.

Light Toy Give-Away Thanks to donations from more than 25 people from across America, my annual toy drive was a success.

We were able to collect hundreds of toys, games, bikes and more for children in the Atlantic City area.

On Dec. 8 we donated toys to the Toys-For-Kids Drive at The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University.

There were so many great organizations in South Jersey that made this holiday season bright. As we close out the holiday season, and I start counting the weeks until spring, I want to thank everyone that contributed this year. My heart is still filled with joy.

Locals dedicate time to repairing and renovating beloved Somers Mansion

n the corner of Shore Road and Macarthur Blvd., the Somers Mansion overlooks the Somers Point Circle and Great Egg Harbor Bay. The three-story historic home, constructed of brick, was built in the early 1720s by Richard Somers, the founder of Somers Point. His family occupied the house for over 200 years.

The building is the oldest in Atlantic County and is even older than the county itself.

For years, the Somers family’s home has sat at that corner untouched, falling apart without being repaired.

In 2018, Greg Sykora, a Somers Point resident who loves the town and its history, decided to do something about it.

“I got tired of looking at the Somers Mansion.

It was in total disarray,” he said.

After continuously calling the state of New Jersey and being told there wasn’t money to fix it, Sykora took the problem into his own hands and organized a group to save the building.

That group is known as the Patriots for the Somers Mansion, a 501(c)(3) founded to repair and maintain the centrally located landmark. In addition to being a founder, Sykora’s also the vice president.

In order to raise money to fix up the historic home, the nonprofit holds events that benefit it such as wine tasting, spooky stories at the mansion in October and a summer farmers market.

At many of the events that take place there, Sykora’s cover band, the SSP’s, plays. Merchandise is sold, and the profit is put toward the renovations and maintenance of the site.

During the events, attendees can tour the grounds and learn more about the home’s history.

Because of all the work the charity has put into Somers Mansion, the Patriots for the Somers Mansion eventually were able to be recognized by the state as official “friends of the property” and received a grant.

With that money, the 501(c)(3) was able to establish Somers Point’s farmers markets on Saturdays in the summer.

Vendors then rent out a spot and a portion of the money received through it goes to mansion repairs; this year, the windows were fixed with it.

For the past few Decembers, the nonprofit has hosted a Christmas Mart – basically a winter farmer’s market – for a day in conjunction with

local businesses.

Money raised through the nonprofit’s events has been used to paint the exterior, keep the building clean and maintained, landscape, fix the deck around the building and add lights outside.

Behind the mansion, there’s an annex that doesn’t have as much historical significance as the main building, but is also being renovated so it can be used. The bathroom was gutted and replaced, new floors were added, and holes in the hallway were spackled.

As for the future plans of the rear building, the nonprofit plans to merge the two offices within by removing the wall in between. Then, they want to create a classroom environment for meetings and school trips.

Eventually, the goal is to set up an informative historical display about the town and the mansion.

Thanks to the Patriots for the Somers Mansion, a piece of Somers Point history is being preserved for future generations.

Life lessons from the wrestling mat Family Corner

ince the start of the year, I’ve been recognized for two awards.

I am honored to have been selected by the Greater Atlantic City Chamber as one of the Top 20 Under 40 young business leaders in our area.

Along with some other phenomenal professionals in Atlantic County, we will be recognized in March for our contributions to the community in our respective fields.

As for the other award, I landed “Mom of the Year” on the side of a wrestling mat as I extended my open hands to catch my son’s throw-up before it hit the ground.

In pure motherly fashion, I saw my nine-year-old son begin to fail at his attempts to keep control over his body and stay in the tough match he was wrestling. Calculating the room, I knew there was a trash can right outside the door, but with a room full of warmedup wrestlers, I quickly decided to leave the door closed and use the only vessel I could find: my hands. Thankfully, it was the result of him enjoying a little too much sugar and Playstation during the holidays, and the damage was minimal. My son forfeited that match, and we broke the one wrestling rule we have in a wrestling gym by letting him cuddle me on the bleachers until he felt better.

I’m no stranger to the sport of wrestling. As a high school student at Egg Harbor Township, I managed the wrestling team all four years. I said “yes” on a whim when Coach Dilks asked if I would be interested in learning how to work clocks and keep score for a few matches. I fell in love with the sport, the families, and the coaches.

Coach Caiazza, a legend at Egg Harbor Township High School, became a mentor and friend to me. The families that I grew up around every winter have attended my wedding, baby showers, kids' birthday parties, funerals of loved ones, and more. There is something special about the sport that goes beyond the mat.

Last Friday, I worked the clock during my son’s first Varsity Match, during which he was winning against his friend 3-0 until he got pinned with one second left on the clock. The emotions were intense, but as I watched my

boy stand up, hug his opponent, and walk off the mat gracefully, I thought, that’s it. That’s what this sport is about.

He went on to wrestle and win his next two matches. As we walked out of the gym that night, after he bragged about how he pinned someone using a move he hadn’t tried before, he asked with a quiet and steady voice, “Mommy, was there really only one second left on the clock?”

The duality of being a working parent and juggling all that life throws at you can often feel like catching throwup or being pinned in the last second.

This life is not for the faint of heart either. It takes grit, dedication, and the willingness to walk away from certain things with grace and your head held high, even when the going gets tough.

I read once that prospective employees with a wrestling career on their resume are seen as highly competent individuals. They’re good against the clock, understand work ethic, and know what it feels like to win or lose with honor.

Here are three of the many lessons I’ve witnessed in a wrestling room that can be applied to life: Win with grace, lose with grace In the words of Olympic wrestler Jordan Burroughs, “Nobody in the sport of wrestling has ever won every match; you’re going to lose at some point.”

In life, every day isn’t going to feel like a win. There will be days when you want to run off the mat and throw up in your mom’s hands and days when you feel on top of the world after a few good wins. Wrestling reminds us that the only real way to truly win is to keep a steady pace, breathe through the hard

moments, and show up the next day to try again. Each new morning brings a fresh opportunity to give life your best knowing that it may look different than yesterday, and that’s okay.

Who is in your corner matters If you’ve ever attended a wrestling tournament, you know that a coach’s corner can get a little wild. Coaches are yelling, parents are slamming the mat, and teammates are cheering in support as dozens of people gather around. It’s the wrestler’s job to stay focused and listen for their coach’s voice over the pandemonium. Wrestlers are trained to tune out the noise and tune into the people who have their best interests in mind.

In life and business, who you keep in your corner matters just as much.

The world is full of noise and people telling you what to do, how to move, and how they think you could win. A quick glance at social media can feel as noisy as a packed wrestling gym. Build a corner full of people who understand your strengths and weaknesses and want to see you win, who are willing to talk a little louder and stick around after the noise dies down. Choose the people who will celebrate your wins and encourage you after a loss. Then, do the same for them. Be in their corner, too. Life and wrestling are both individual and team sports. We aren’t meant to go at it alone.

A lion lives in all of us My son is a lover. He’s not a naturally aggressive kid, so when he chose wrestling as a sport, we didn’t know what to expect. He’s strong, smart, and tough, but he’s also sweet, kind, and gentle. His coaches were surprised at

the end of last season when he began showing a different level of physical aggression when he stepped onto the mat. Behind the scenes and before tournaments, I had been encouraging him to bellow the loudest lion roar he could muster. With a big inhale and a grumble in his core, he began to audibly “roar” before a match and the little shift in his energy began to make a big difference on the scoreboard.

That lion lives in all of us. Find it, understand it, let it out when needed, and learn to tame it when necessary.

Whether you roar before a business meeting or stand in “Superwoman Pose” before a presentation, I encourage you to find your inner lion and call on its energy to bring your A-game to the mat of life.

AVANZAR combats human trafficking and domestic violence

any of us have made New Year’s resolutions for a better year ahead.

Maybe your resolution is to volunteer more, to go back to work for the first time in years, or even to leave an unsafe relationship.

Allow me to introduce you to AVANZAR, a local nonprofit with a passion for social justice.

So, what does AVANZAR do?

Located in Pleasantville, AVANZAR does a bit of everything. Initially started as a crisis hotline, they expanded their services to offer more resources and to ensure they weren’t turning anyone away who needed assistance.

This organization’s mission is to “empower individuals and their families by working to ensure their physical safety, emotional wellbeing, individual freedom, and economical equality.” They primarily achieve this by offering services for those who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.

AVANZAR has 24-hour hotlines for those who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault.

The hotlines provide counseling to those who call. AVANZAR offers legal assistance to victims. Volunteers are available to accompany victims to a hospital or police station. Emergency shelter is offered when needed or requested.

They also have a program that provides counseling to children who have witnessed domestic violence.

AVANZAR also has a program to give court-ordered counseling to those convicted of domestic violence.

Claudia Ratzlaff, CEO, commented that they also refer batterers out to clinical therapy if that’s needed.

“We provide counseling to support court-ordered batterers to develop an understanding of how they got there and why this behavior isn’t working for them and how it is not only illegal, it's problematic, “ Ratzlaff commented. “We try to give them the

skillset to not walk that same path.”

In addition, the nonprofit also provides technical support to child care centers, racial sensitivity training to businesses, and resources for those who are re-entering the workforce.

By teaching displaced homemakers how to be economically independent, they work to prevent people from being at risk of abuse. AVANZAR offers job training and further education opportunities.

Their work with child care first arose out of a need for high-quality child care among the people they helped. AVANZAR supports local early education centers and daycare centers in the area.

AVANZAR also opposes racism and all forms of discrimination. It hopes its work with race relations will help the organization better serve the community.

While not everyone who uses AVANZAR’s variety of services has experienced abuse, the nonprofit’s programs all work together to combat abuse and hate in South Jersey.

Let’s back up.

Ratzlaff explained to Shore Local that the nonprofit was started as a feminist organization in 1975. One small group of women started a 24-hour crisis line for women who had been sexually assaulted.

However, they then began to get an unexpected amount of domestic violence calls. Unwilling to turn away those who needed help, they expanded their services to help those in abusive situations.

Those services kept expanding as the organization continued to seek ways to help in any way they could.

They offered training for mothers who were returning to the workforce for the first time, whether it was due to domestic violence or even just a spouse’s disability. These women needed childcare while they worked, so AVANZAR began supporting childcare centers and early childhood education. They arranged counseling for kids who had witnessed domestic violence.

The organization didn’t stop there.

Ratzlaff said it didn’t feel right to turn away anyone who needed help. Formerly called The Women’s Center, the center formally changed its name to AVANZAR in 2018. The new name comes from a Spanish word that means “advance”. Ratzlaff comment-

ed that AVANZAR aims to help people advance their quality of life and aims to promote a safer community.

She highly recommended taking the volunteer training available on AVANZAR’s website, even if you are unsure about volunteering. The training teaches everyone how to be a better neighbor and friend to those who have experienced sexual assault or domestic violence.

“Going to our website and taking the volunteer training is a wonderful start because it’s really an introduction to domestic violence and sexual assault, and how to support someone’s who’s been victimized.

And, you know, we’re all gonna run into that person, even if you’re not volunteering for us, whether it’s an office colleague or your college roommate or your child’s friend or your next-door neighbor. I mean, you’d be hard-pressed not to brush up against somebody that’s had an issue of violence in their life,” she commented.

According to Ratzlaff, there’s no special magic to being a volunteer.

She said that if you’re the kind of person who passes a car accident and stops to help the victims, then you already have what it takes to volunteer.

Diving into a new year in Margate

O

n New Year’s Day, thousands of cars lined the Margate beach as far as the eye could see for the Polar Bear Plunge. Both spectators and participants put together their tailgating set up well before noon, awaiting in 40-degree weather to rush into the frigid ocean.

According to CBC, a Canadian news outlet, the Polar Bear Plunge’s origin can be traced back to Jan. 1, 1920. On that New Year’s Day, Peter Pantages, a Greek immigrant to Canada, gathered a group of like-minded individuals to take a dip in the icy-cold Vancouver waters.

The group became known as the Vancouver Polar Bear Swim Club.

When Pantages died in 1971, the tradition he began on that day stuck.

Today, thousands of people take part in Polar Bear Plunges around the world as a way to kick off their year on a positive foot.

Although it’s a tradition that’s meant to be fun, according to Eating Well Magazine, there are even possible health benefits such as decreasing inflammation, improving immunity, boosting your mood and metabolism,

and increasing circulation.

Just before the horn blew, signaling the crowd to charge into the ocean, those planning on taking a dip gathered together.

The entire beach smelled of wood burning as the scent was picked up by the wind from attendees’ grills or bonfires and carried throughout the area.

The cars that lined the beach were surrounded by people who were drinking, chatting or even playing beach games well before and after the crowd rushed into the water.

Bay Shores bartender Buddy Tweil moved to Florida where he rented beach chairs in the sun. Pittsburgh Paul, the “Sheriff of Reality,” went back to Pittsburgh, but occasionally returns to walk the boards.

Conway Twitty went on to become one of the most popular country music stars of all time, and often sang duets with Loretta Lynn. Levon Helm portrayed Loretta Lynn’s father in the movie, “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

After Dylan was in a serious motorcycle accident, he recuperated at the summer residence of his manager, Albert Goldman, in Woodstock, N.Y. known as an artists’ colony.

There the Hawks joined him, renting a pink split-level home where they lived, wrote songs and played and recorded in the basement. Levon joined them, and the townspeople began to refer to them simply as The Band, a name they kept. Their first album was

called, “Music From Big Pink.”

The townspeople of Woodstock refused to allow the concert to be held there so it was moved to nearby Bethel, N.Y., where The Band was a major attraction.

Nurse Lynda Van Devanter enlisted in the Army, volunteered for duty in Vietnam and wrote about her experiences in a book, “Home Before Morning” (1983, University of Massachusetts Press). Her recollections recorded here are from the chapter, “Dunes ’Til Dawn.” She became an advocate for Vietnam veterans suffering

illnesses related to the chemical defoliant, Agent Orange.

Duncan MacRae, who served in Vietnam as a Marine Corps helicopter pilot, returned to making pizzas at Mack & Manco’s and then, with his younger brother Scotty, opened Yesterday's restaurant at Five Points in Columbia, S.C. Both are now retired, but will return later this year for a Mack & Manco’s reunion.

Stephanie “Stevie” Nicks occasionally returns to Ocean City to visit her family. She was working as a waitress in Los Angeles when she joined Fleetwood Mac, and had a year-long love affair with Joe Walsh, who dropped out of Kent State to play with the James Gang and then the Eagles.

Walsh recalled his experiences in Somers Point on a Philadelphia radio program. He said he broke off his affair with Stevie Nicks because they were both addicted to cocaine. Nicks called Walsh “the love of my life.” She will perform at the Etess Arena at the Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City on Feb. 10.

Boardwalk bookstore owner Roger Monroe became a real estate agent and developer and is now retired in Somers Point. When he recently ran into Fred Prinz who sold balloons on the Boardwalk, they talked about the Anglemyer murder and a recent story about it which ran in a national true crime magazine. The story by Tom Donaghy names a new suspect: the

Hollywood screenwriter Donaghy is writing a screenplay about the murder which he hopes filmmaker Ron Howard will make into a major motion picture.

Bay Shores band leader Johnny Caswell became a music recording engineer in California and returned for an Atlantic City casino engagement where old fans came out to see him.

Pete Carroll of the Carroll Brothers became a truck driver. He once pulled up to The Anchorage Tavern, tooted his horn and said hello to the regulars who remembered him from when he lived upstairs.

Anthony Marotta, Sr., of Tony Mart’s fame passed away, and his son Tony, Jr., lives in Arizona, but son Carmen Marotta still promotes live music and is writing a book about all the great bands that performed at Tony Mart’s.

KYW TV news producer David Brenner became a major stand-up comic who often appeared on Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show,” sometimes filling in for Carson. He told the story of breaking into Judge Helfant’s chambers on TV. His on-air reporter Tom Snyder became a late night talk show host himself, often humorously portrayed

by Dan Akyroid on “Saturday Night Live.” As Brenner had attended Temple University, his KYW TV news films are stored in the Urban Archives at the Temple University Library. His

Grace Kelly returned to Ocean City every Labor Day weekend of her life, except the year she died.

Her son, who was reprimanded for riding his skateboard in the house, is now Prince Albert II of Monaco.

He recently returned to Philadelphia where he purchased his family home.

He restored it and returns there frequently.

Grace Kelly’s cousin John Lehman still summers in Ocean City. He was named secretary of the Navy by President Reagan and served on the 9-11 Commission.

Ocean City to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

cean City will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024. The ceremony will start at 12 p.m. at the Ocean City Tabernacle. The event brings the community together to remember Dr. King through words, song and dance.

One of the highlights is always the recitation of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech by the Rev. Gregory Johnson.

The event will be followed by a complimentary soul food buffet luncheon at the Tabernacle.

Two citizens, Jane French and Bill McMahon III, will be honored with Martin Luther King Community Service Awards. Each year, the awards recognize volunteer activity and service to the Ocean City community.

Both of these award recipients have been selfless and tireless in support of local residents. The Jan. 15 presentation will include much more on each of these exemplary citizens.

will be honored for their winning essays on the influence of Dr. King.

10 more entertainers that performed at the legendary Tony Mart’s Part two in a three part series

rom Jack Newland playing the piano in the ’40s until the final notes of the testimonial to Tony Mart’s, and the last Drink ‘n Drown in September of ’82, there were hundreds of musicians and entertainers that performed at the legendary Somers Point nightclub.

As part of the history of “The Legacy of Tony Mart,” we are compiling numerous pictures and ads that tell the Tony Mart’s story. We have put together an extensive list of more than 130 entertainers who performed in its 38 years of good times at the legendary nightclub.

We have compiled about 30 important and amusing anecdotes from some of the greatest and most musically important entertainers and groups that ever played at “The Showplace of the World,” as Tony Mart’s was called. In this Shore Local News series, we will be adding about 10 performers to our list each week.

1. Joey Dee and The Starlighters Joey Dee and The Starlighters came to Somers Point and played at the Jersey Shore, learning all about The Twist and rock ‘n' roll before they went to the Peppermint Lounge and recorded their famous hits including “The Peppermint Twist.” Tony Mart swore they learned it all from their experience in Somers Point and Wildwood, where Chubby Checker was playing regularly.

2. Dwayne Eddie and The Rebels Along with his Oklahoma review, Dwayne Eddie became famous for his hit with the cover of Bill Doggert’s “Hockey Talk” and several other famous songs. Tony Mart himself said that no group ever drew greater

crowds and they sold more drinks in the few weeks of Dwayne Eddie and The Rebels at Tony Mart’s.

3. Del Shannon Backed by The Fall Guys and headlining over Conway Twitty and Bill Haley, Del Shannon played at Tony Mart’s when “Run Away” was the No. 1 song in the country.

4. Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels Mitch Ryder played several stormy engagements at Tony Mart’s. This electrifying, phenomenal rock ‘n' roll entertainer was an avid, crazy drinker and a loud-playing rock star. He had some confrontational moments with Tony Mart and was finally thrown out with his last engagement, replacing Levon and The Hawks over Labor Day weekend in 1965, which was unceremoniously ended by Tony Mart himself, who was infamous for doing such things.

5. The Female Beatles With their tight, sequined pants, frilly sweaters and beehive hairdos, this group of all-female performers

could rock The Beatles’ songs and were very entertaining. They were popular and a wild contrast to Conway Twitty, Levon & The Hawks, and The Fall Guys, with whom they appeared as co-headline attractions.

Tony Mart liked them because he made money with these New York, in-your-face performers who were anything but bashful on stage, especially the big, tall, attractive blonde in the middle.

6. The Kit Kats A young, emerging rock ‘n' roll cover band on the scene, breaking in at Tony Mart’s, they eventually played successfully all over the Jersey Shore, as well as up and down the East Coast. Their leader, “Kit,” was a sharp, savvy bandleader who led the group to a long career, becoming a strong Las Vegas lounge act with a loyal following for a long time.

7. Levon & The Hawks Of all the groups on this long list of entertainers that performed in that 38-year span, by almost every measure, Levon & The Hawks was one of the greatest. They entranced their audiences with pulsing dance music and stunned the crowds when Richard Manuel sang soul and R&B, like Ray Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind,” and James Brown’s “Please, Please, Please.”

Del Shannon they were the quintessential success story, eventually becoming The Band backing Bob Dylan. They went on to become one of the greatest rock ‘n' roll Americana bands in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If ever one group defined and distinguished Tony Mart’s as a Jersey Shore rock ‘n' roll institution, it was Levon & The Hawks.

8. The Magic Mushrooms In 1966, they were the first longhaired, psychedelic rockers to wear bell-bottom pants, paisley shirts, and big iron surfer crosses. They were the freaks on display and when they played The Kinks, The Stones, and their signature song, “Wild Thing” by The Troggs, they drew some of the largest crowds in the history of The Mart. People were literally lined up around the block.

9. Joey Powers and The New Dimension Joey Powers was a savvy and charismatic frontman and singer who became very popular regionally in Pennsylvania, up and down the East

Coast, North Jersey, and New York.

Powers had a regional hit, “Midnight Mary,” as well as making several other songs his signature including, “Just Walk Away Renee.”

In the summer of ’67 he had a great band, and he eventually went on to have an even more popular band, Powers Flower, who played The Dunes on Somers Point Boulevard as well as some of the most successful mega rock ‘n' roll bars in the Philly/ Jersey area.

He was the epitome of a great old-school frontman who could read the crowd, call the songs, and keep the room moving, which made him popular as well as valuable. The word is after leaving the stage he became a booking agent, recording studio owner, record producer, and church leader until his passing in 2017.

10. Tommy Strand and The Upper Hand The hot Southern sound of "blueeyed soul" made this band one of the top groups in Miami, along with The Fabulous Lattimore and the incredible Wayne Cochran & the CC Riders.

Tommy Strand played the better part of one season, and it still has not been determined whether his jazz giant bass player, Jaco Pastorius, played part of that time at Tony Mart’s.

These are the greatest, but there are many more bands with interesting stories that will appear in the book, “The Legend of Tony Mart’s,” which is being written now in real-time.

Remembering when a Canadian embezzler shut down an AC casino

Professionally, he was just as unremarkable, a nameless, faceless cog in the huge machine that was the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, a staid, old-line financial institution that was a pillar of that country’s financial world. But he suffered from a disease that ultimately wreaked havoc from CIBC’s headquarters to what was then called Caesars Boardwalk Re-

fascinating—if, at this point, nearly forgotten— story of Atlantic City’s legal-gaming era is that of Brian Molony, who, in the early 1980s, became the only gambler to cause a casino to cease operations.

On the surface, Molony, a Toronto, Canada resident who was born in 1955, appeared to be the last person one would suspect to be at the center of a scandal that rocked both New Jersey’s gaming and Canadian banking industries. By all accounts, there was absolutely nothing extraordinary or noteworthy about him in appearance or behavior. millions at their favorite casinos. But as a CIBC employee, Molony was making only about 10,000 Canadian dollars a year—which didn’t keep him from reportedly losing more than $10 million at various casinos, primarily the Regency.

According to a 2017 article in the Toronto Star, Molony devised a system of embezzling funds from his employer that had him creating phony people and companies to whom he would make loans on behalf of CIBC. He would also cook the bank’s books in order to make it look as if the make-believe borrowers were actually repaying the loans in a timely fashion.

Per the Star, during a 15-month stretch in the early 1980s, Molony gambled at Caesars 37 times. At first, he flew commercially to Atlantic City, carrying with him hundreds of thousands in cash. In a 1984 jailhouse interview with Star reporter David Miller, Molony related how he was so “stuffed” with $350,000 on his person that he could “hardly sit down.”

As Molony told Miller, Molony’s car keys triggered an airport-security alarm, “but the money is stuffed on top of the keys and I couldn’t reach them…I’m sweating buckets.” But he somehow managed to get them out of his pocket and continue his trip unmolested.

Caesars Atlantic City 1980s The episode spooked Molony enough for him to reconsider his actions. However, Casears officials had a “fish” on the line—even better, one who shunned the perks of high-rollerdom like lavish suites, premium show tickets, expensive meals and even the services of prostitutes—and they weren’t going to cut the line and let him get away. So they and Molony devised a system of cash transfers that involved drafts drawn on other banks with funds transferred to the

casino. In addition, Caesars began flying him to Atlantic City on private jets, in order for him to avoid possible detection in public security lines.

Hitting the gaming tables at Caesars wasn’t Molony’s only source of gambling activity. He was also an inveterate sports bettor, and that was how his name ultimately came to the attention of Canadian authorities investigating his bookies. That initiated their scrutiny of Molony and—more to the point—the source

of his gambling funds. He was ultimately arrested on April 27, 1982, and subsequently tried and convicted for embezzlement. He spent six years in prison for his crimes.

But Molony couldn’t have pulled off his scams without the assistance of the Caesars execs who never questioned the source of his money. According to a contemporaneous New York Times article, the state of New Jersey penalized the casino for “violating credit, deposit and reporting regulations.” As a result, Caesars was ordered to completely shut down its casino operation for 24 hours—which it’s been estimated, may have cost it as much as $800,000 in lost revenue.

The casino stayed closed on November 30, 1985, which employees mockingly dubbed “Brian Molony Day.” According to various reports, since his release from prison, Molony has worked as a “business consultant” and has also lectured on compulsive gambling.

Some Jersey Shore music predictions for 2024

Tune In, Turn On

I

n our first column of the new year, I’m going to get a little clairvoyant and make some music predictions for the Jersey Shore in 2024.

Hazy Cosmic Jive Will Thrive: Hazy Cosmic Jive (HCJ), a tribute to The Thin White Duke (David Bowie, of course), regularly play the Jersey Shore, usually Josie Kelly’s in Somers Point (return date tba); occasionally at parties thrown by local music/art patrons Jimmy and Tara Scioli, and as a duo (HCJ keyboardist/vocalist Zeek Mitchell and talented, young vocalist Camille K play Rush Lounge in Golden Nugget Casino March 22).

We caught HCJ during David Bowie Week in Philly last weekend performing a textbook version of “David Live” from his “Diamond Dogs” era.

Big things are in the cards for this

group.

Anchor Rock Club Will Continue To Rock: When Bourre closed November 2022, Anchor Rock Club (ARC) became AC’s last bastion for indie/punk/emo music. Located at New York Avenue and the Boardwalk (650 capacity), ARC presented memorable shows by nationally known artists in 2023 (Jon Spencer, Low Cut Connie, Cro Mags, Fred Armisen, Agnostic Front, Joe McGinty/Loser’s Lounge, sold-out Gorilla Biscuits), and continues to support local band gigs here (Gutterdrunk, The Burdens, Molly Ringworm, Te Vista, Red Meat Conspiracy, et al).

ARC rolls into 2024 with an eclectic lineup now including touring comedians. Tina Friml, born with cerebral palsy, is there Jan. 20, and Kerryn Freehan Feb. 16.

Anchor will still rock – starting with promoter Emma Sanborn’s four-band hard rock banger Jan. 13 (Bankrupt, Controller, Beef, Driltusk.

The long, forgotten hotels of Atlantic City

T

hose even slightly acquainted with Atlantic City history may recall the names of some of the city’s better-known grand hotels from days of yore such as the Traymore, Dennis, or the Chalfonte Haddon Hall.

As astounding as it might seem today, in 1918 it was estimated that there were 1,200 hotels of various sizes in operation in the city, with 30 of them on the Boardwalk. These long-gone and long-forgotten venues helped shape the landscape and the legend that was, and to an extent still is, the Queen of Resorts.

Some were impressive, some innovative, some long-lived, and some spectacular. Here are just a few: It’s claimed that The Brighton, built in 1873 at Indiana Avenue and the Boardwalk, was the first hotel in Atlantic City to open year-round.

“Fancy” was often used to describe The Brighton, which was one of the last wooden hotels on the Boardwalk, as well as the only one with an outdoor swimming pool (so The Brighton said) until it was demolished in 1959.

Built on that site was the Colony Motel, later renamed the Colony Resort Motel, which was pretty glitzy for its time. The Colony advertised itself as “Atlantic City's smartest and largest motel,” with 275 air-condi-

tioned rooms, each with a television and Hi-Fi (can you imagine?), free parking, an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, an ice skating rink, coffee shop, and cocktail lounge.

As Atlantic City's fortunes declined in the 1970s, the Colony tried to make a go of it by converting the motel into apartments. There is no record in the press of when the whole structure was demolished. Evidently, it wasn't newsworthy enough. Sitting on the site today, just across from The Claridge, is a one-square block empty lot.

The Hotel Morton has quite a storied history and must have been some kind of place. Located on Virginia Avenue near the Boardwalk, the Morton evolved from a guest house to a full-blown hotel. Built in 1923, The Morton was the place to be for a number of years. WPG (formerly WFPG), Atlantic City’s first radio station, broadcasted from there. During World War II, The Morton became a Coast Guard training school. The hall used for the Coast Guard eventually became a theater where more than one Broadway-bound production had their tryouts.

The Morton was so popular, so elegant, and so close to the Steel Pier that a plethora of celebrities stayed there. The Beach Boys, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Miss America contestants were among its famous guests. But it was demolished in

1977 and eventually replaced by the Taj Mahal Hotel and Casino, later the Hard Rock.

Another hotel located near the Steel Pier on Virginia Avenue, and another stopover for performers appearing in the Pier’s main showroom or the Marine Ballroom was The Albemarle. It had 92 rooms and popular enough to attract a SunRay Drugstore as a tenant, located on

the hotel’s Pacific Avenue corner.

Like many structures of that period, the Ablemarle was eventually condemned. It was torn down in 1970.

The Chelsea Hotel, at 111 South Chelsea Ave., has a lot of history. It survived fires, name changes, and almost a century of evolution in Atlantic City. The 250-room hotel opened

↘Continued from 47 in 1899, and was the visiting place for dignitaries including Woodrow Wilson and Franklin Roosevelt. It was so successful that management added 12 more stories in 1927. Like many of the city’s larger food and lodging venues, beginning in 1942 and until the end of World War II, The Chelsea was home to Army personnel.

It was still doing decent business into the 1970s, although the name had long ago been changed to the Sheraton-Deauville. A fire in 1975 caused significant damage. As the Deauville, it limped along until 1981

when it was demolished to make room for the Tropicana’s TropWorld.

Note: The “original” Chelsea Hotel is not to be confused with The Chelsea, which now stands as a part of the Tropicana and was formerly a Howard Johnson’s and a Holiday Inn. Possibly one of the better known of Atlantic City’s forgotten hotels is The President. Built in 1926 at

Albany Avenue and the Boardwalk, The President was the first hotel in the city to have an indoor pool and boasted a presidential suite, which was actually the hotel’s entire top floor.

Though first opened as a combination of apartments and a hotel, The President became a hotel-only venue by the mid-1930s. Like several of the larger hotels fronting the ocean in Atlantic City during World War II, The President was taken over by the military from 1942 to 1946.

By 1968, the fortunes of most of the once-grand hotels were declining.

The President became an apartment building until casino plans were proposed.

It took three attempts on Aug. 24, 28, and 30, 1979, to implode the once-grand hotel. The plan to build a Sahara Hotel/Casino on the spot never happened. What’s there now?

On May 23, 1974, The New York Times carried the following news item: ATLANTIC CITY, May 22 (AP)—The Breakers, the oldest hotel in this city and the last to offer salt-water baths in all rooms, was demolished today.

Wreckers brought the 79-yearold, 12-story hotel down in seconds with three dynamite blasts. A neighboring hotel, The St. Charles, was dynamited on May 3 as part of the city's urban renewal program. Both hotels were in a 60-acre, oceanfront tract that the city's housing authority began clearing in 1967. So far it has not found a developer.

The blasting of The Breakers went off without incident shortly after 8 A.M. as hundreds watched under sunny skies.

For years many of the visitors who chose to vacation in Atlantic City were Jewish, and there were several hotels in the city of various sizes that catered to customers seeking a Kosher menu. The biggest and the most well-known was The Breakers.

Built in 1895 and first called the Hotel Rudolf, the future Breakers was originally five stories tall. Two decades later, brothers Joel and Ju-

lian Hillman bought the property and turned it into a 12-story hotel with a 17-story façade facing the Boardwalk.

It had a bathhouse, banquet hall, rooftop restaurant, and other amenities, and a new name – The Breakers.

Capacity was 450.

When Emanuel Katz bought it in 1931. He put the hotel on the Atlantic City map when it became the first hotel in the city to observe Kosher dietary laws. Katz, perhaps, came up with The Breakers’ well-remembered catchline, “The Aristocrat of Kosher Hotels.”

But its demise was quick. After the U.S. Army used The Breakers as a barracks during World War II, the decline began. The reasons? Perhaps the same reasons that this hotel, and many of the town’s grander hotels gradually disappeared: Changing demographics, changing tastes, and changing times, among other factors.

The Breakers closed in 1965 and sat vacant on the parcel that is now the Ocean Casino Resort, until it was demolished nine years later. Maybe there just wasn’t room in Atlantic City any longer for a 450-room “Aristocrat of Kosher Hotels.”

Have you ever talked to money?

ave you ever talked to money? Okay, that is an evocative question, isn’t it? You carry money around with you everywhere. Money is in your wallet and bank account, and on your credit card, watch, phone, etc.

However, if you are like most people, you have never actually spoken to money, have you? Well, I did.

I searched the world, from north to south and east to west, looking for Money, so I could ask him the questions that had always bothered me. I traveled to the Far East because I knew there were a lot of gurus out there. While I did find plenty of gurus, I didn’t find much money. I went to Europe because I figured I could easily find old money there, but no… Money wasn’t talking.

I went out west to California, thinking that there was a lot of new money in

places like Silicon Valley. While everyone claimed to have been at a party with Money or saw him briefly at a sales pitch, no one had cornered him into a conversation.

In a desperate attempt to follow the money, I went to Washington D.C. Everyone there claimed to know everything about money. But when I asked them some money questions, all they could do was point me to some charts and tables.

A junior congressional page said that money was everywhere, and if I would just vote for his congresswoman, then I wouldn’t need to talk to Money because the congresswoman would take care of everything, and by the way, did I want to contribute to her campaign?

It turned out money’s in Jersey!

Folks, I finally found money. He was in an ATM in South Jersey – not far from the printing presses of Shore Local Magazine! I went back to that ATM, day after day, and asked Money all the questions I had. It was fascinating! I put the whole conversation, including Money’s excellent advice and observations, into my book, “Money Talks … Finally!

The First-Ever Interview Between Man & Money”. I never told anyone else where Money was, so I guess he’s still there, waiting for someone to find him.

In the meantime, I’ll be sharing some of Money’s best-kept secrets with my readers in this column.

Part one of “money, sunny, honey” Before the Christmas holidays, I wrote a column about the three things everyone needs in life to be successful: “money, sunny, and honey”. I promised you that I would do separate columns on all three factors, and I’m starting off with my favorite topic: money. I have a lot to tell you about the conversation I had with Money, so relax, take a deep breath, and let’s get going.

Money, where can people find you?

This is the very first question I asked Money because I hear people asking it all the time. Money told me that he is amused by this question because most people assume that money is in a bank. Plus, the people who are asking this question don’t usually have much money. They go looking for it, so they can have more of it.

I want you to read Money’s answer to this question: “People always assume I’m in a bank, but that’s just one of the places where I am. I’m everywhere these days because I belong to people, and people have access to me anytime they want. For example, suppose they are watching television, and a product they want or need is in a commercial.

They just whip out their phone and order that product. When they do, their bank will send me (Money) directly to the manufacturer or distributor of that product immediately. By the time they disconnect, I’m there, not in a bank, but in a digital cloud, with the manufacturer’s name on me. Wham!”

Money went on to say, “You see, everyone thinks I’m stored someplace.

Years ago, that was true. But today, I’m on the move constantly. One millisecond, I’m on your phone. The next, I’m being transferred to a manufacturer, who immediately sends me to a supplier in a distant country. I’m on the move, baby!”

How can I get more money?

This is the second question I asked Money because most people are looking for more of it. That’s why they go to work, sell used stuff, open a business, etc. Here is Money’s answer to that question: I can only go where I am commanded to go. The only one who can command me is the person who is currently holding on to me!

Ka-bam! This is huge! If you want more money, you must convince other people to command their money to go to you. Folks, this information is priceless! All this time you’ve been wondering where money is and how to get more of it. Well, I just gave you the two

Money, why would someone do that?

Oh yeah, this is a big question. As usual, after all these years of being sent back and forth from one person to another, Money had the answer: In order to get people with money to command me to go to you, you must give them something that is more valuable to them than the money they give up.

Hey Money, I’ll handle this one.

Here’s an example from my life.

When I had my restaurant, I purchased steaks from my supplier. They were preselected, wrapped and delivered to my door. He gave them to me at a good price because I bought so many at a time. My money was worth less to me than the value of those steaks. When I applied my expertise to cooking those steaks and serving them in a comfortable dining room, I could charge my customers more than I paid for them.

They gave me their money, which was worth less to them than the product and service I gave them.

Stop thinking poor. Get more money!

Can wine fit into your New Year’s goals?

appy New Year! The first weeks of January are when we are most motivated to implement those New Year’s resolutions which, for many, is to adopt a healthier routine of diet and exercise. Giving up alcohol, thus embarking on “Dry January,” is a practice followed by some people. Others simply want to know if wine has a place in a healthy diet.

For those seeking the flavors of wine without the alcohol, I have good news. In years past, no-alcohol wines lacked that distinct alcohol flavor, but the process of making them has changed. No-alcohol wines are now produced using traditional fermentation and aging processes, but there is a final low-temperature, spinning cone process that removes the alcohol while safeguarding the delicious wine aromas and flavors.

One brand of no-alcohol wine that you might consider is Fe Wines, from California, available in multiple white and red varietals. For a sparkling no-alcohol wine, Gruvi-Dry Secco is a nice semi-dry bubbly made in Colorado that is packaged in 4 packs of 10-ounce mini bottles. For a sparkling rosé that won’t disappoint, look for Spring in a Bottle, a product of Wolffer Estates from Rheinhessen, Germany. It’s a delicious alcohol-removed option that may be the best thing to ever happen to “Dry January”.

When I earned my doctorate in business, my mom would introduce me as “my son, the doctor, but not the kind that helps people.” I think she was simply trying to distinguish my credentials from a medical degree, as I hope to have helped my students over the years, However, mom was right. I’m not the kind of doctor that can give you medical advice regarding your wine consumption. Looking into the topic, however, provided many angles to consider.

There are scientifically supported benefits to moderate consumption of wine. Studies reported in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2000 gave evidence that moderate wine consumption (defined as 1-2 glasses per day) led to a reduced risk of premature death by almost one-third.

to have significantly lower mortality rates from cardiovascular disease and cancer than non-drinkers. This seemed to be related to the effect of alcohol dilating blood vessels, thus increasing blood flow. Wine also appeared to increase levels of HDL, the “good cholesterol,” and lower levels of LDL, the “bad cholesterol.” Another 2000 study from the University of Crete in Greece claimed that two compounds in wine — phenols and resveratrol — can be effective in reducing the occurrence and/or growth of breast cancer cells and liver cancer.

Additionally, a report published in the June 2000 edition of the Journal of the American Dental Association supported the claim that another compound in wine, quercetin, inhibits the growth of oral cancer cells. A 2022 article on winepros.com. titled, “10 Health Benefits of Wine,” reiterated the studies above and added the antioxidant effect of wine, especially red wine, in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. The key is moderation, which is generally considered one 5-ounce serving per day for females and two servings for males. Sorry, ladies, this is because men have higher levels of alcohol-digesting enzymes and can tolerate more.

There may also be long-term effects of chronic or excessive drinking.

According to Gateway Foundation, excessive consumption of alcohol can seriously compromise the liver. As many as 35 percent of chronic drinkers will develop alcoholic hepatitis, and up to 20 percent will suffer from cirrhosis. Additionally, wine consumption can contribute to higher blood pressure. For most moderate drinkers, the effects do not typically have long-term implications. However, frequent binge drinking can increase the risk of high blood pressure. Excessive consumption can damage the heart muscle and may result in a higher risk of heart disease. I cannot stress enough the importance of moderation.

Back to our New Year's resolutions. If you are trying to lose weight, you may be looking for lower-calorie wines. Kendall Jackson makes its famous Chardonnay in a low-calorie version. At only 85 calories and 3 grams of carbohydrates, this is clearly an option for diet-conscious consumers. In addition, it is vegan-friendly and gluten-free. Fit Vines produces wine with health in mind too. The numbers vary slightly based on varietal and alcohol percentage but range from about 0.06 to 0.09 grams of sugar, 2.8 to 4.4 carbohydrates, and 112 to 121 calories per serving. How-

ever, there are many wine options that are lower in carbohydrates and calories, even if they don’t openly advertise it as part of the label.

Overall, the majority of dry white, red, and rosé wines with less than 10 grams per L of residual sugar have less than 1.5 carbohydrates per 5-ounce glass. Sweeter wines with 35-50g/L are higher in carbohydrates, generally between 5-8 per serving. The number of calories is dependent on residual sugar and the percentage of alcohol (ABV). For those dryer wines with low residual sugar, the range for a 5 oz serving is 97-125 calories. Sweeter wines with 35-50 g/L of residual sugar are higher in calories at 112-150 per serving.

Of course, if you are trying to lose weight, be aware that the alcohol in

wine activates the hypothalamus and amygdala of our brains which, among other things, control hunger sensations. Drinking alcohol can fool your brain into thinking you are hungry, undermining your diet efforts.

So, if your 2024 resolution involves wine and health, some rules of thumb are: 1) moderation is key, 2) choose dryer wines with lower carbohydrates and, 3) when possible, go for those with lower alcohol. Of course, as you evaluate your health choices, talk to your healthcare provider. I found the information mentioned above quite interesting, however, Mom was right. I’m not that kind of doctor.

Life insurance can be a useful tool

ife insurance, you need it or you don’t. It’s that simple right? Well, not exactly.

There are countless uses for life insurance that I’ve seen over the years and a few times when it really wasn’t needed. Today, we’ll talk about the uses of life insurance, and what to do when you have a policy you no longer need.

1. Traditional Death Benefit- This is one of the most popular uses.

Depending on the face value of your policy, life insurance will provide your beneficiary(s) with a lump sum payment in the event of your death.

2. Collateralize a Loan- Life insurance can be used to pay off a lender in the event of your death. Many lenders require life insurance.

3. College Planning- Cash value life insurance (and annuities) are the only nonqualified assets that are

not assessed for financial aid purposes. A policy can also be used to pay off college for your children in the event of your untimely death.

4. Fund a Business Buyout/Succession PlanBusiness partners can buy insurance on each other and sign an agreement guaranteeing that they will buy the business from your family in the event of your death. A premium payment for life insurance can be a lot cheaper than writing a check for a large sum especially when cash flow is at a premium following the death of a partner.

5. Creating a Legacy- You can work your entire life to save money to leave to your family or you can buy a policy and accomplish the same thing.

6. Create a Charitable Legacy- It can be less expensive to leave the local hospital a life insurance policy (especially one you no longer need) than it is to stroke a check or reduce your heirs’ inheritance.

7. Balance an Inheritance- If you own a business that some, not all, of your children work in, it may not be fair to leave it to all of them. Instead,

the children working in the business inherit it and the others get the equivalent from life insurance.

8. Pay Taxes- Now that the estate tax exemption has been raised, most households won’t have a Federal Estate tax (for now) but may have a state or local tax. Why pay $1 for $1 of tax when you can transfer that future cost to an insurance company for a fraction of the cost by leveraging your dollars using life insurance instead?

9. Cash Flow- In some instances, the cash value portion of a life insurance policy may be accessed tax-free.

Imagine a source of readily available capital. You can take a loan from the policy or surrender up to your cost basis for a tax-free withdrawal.

Eagles game among several Sunday disasters

ast Sunday was a disaster.

It was filled with blown assignments, untimely injuries, missed tackles, dropped passes and various other mistakes that contributed to a lousy performance.

The Eagles’ 27-10 loss to the New York Giants – their fifth defeat in six games – was almost as bad.

Sunday morning featured my wife and I taking our three grandsons – Hampton (7), Graham (5) and Nixon (2) – to breakfast, something we try to do every weekend.

Our go-to spot, Uncle Bill’s Pancake House in Cape May, is closed for the season and the Flight Deck Diner at the Cape May County Airport was also closed, so we headed to another favorite: Uncle Bill’s in North Cape May. Chaos ensued.

Nixon insisted on dumping the creamers into Poppy’s coffee. A couple of drops found the cup while the rest splattered on the coloring sheet the nice, patient waitress had provided.

Ten minutes later, Mimi (my wife) and I were cutting stacks of chocolate chip and Oreo pancakes and a waffle while applying butter and syrup. By the time we got to touch our own breakfasts, the eggs and coffee were as cold

as the sidewalk.

Toward the end, fueled by chocolate chip flapjacks, Hampton slid over to Poppy and decided to see how far he could make my fingers bend.

Nixon slid out of his booster seat and rolled on floor under the booth before emerging between Graham and Mimi.

Then it was time for the entertainment portion of the morning.

Hampton: “What does a moose say when you’re in his way and he wants you to move?”

Me between bites of my eggs and turkey croquettes: “I give up.”

Hampton: “Va-Moose.”

There was nothing humorous about the afternoon. The two hours before kickoff were spent putting away Christmas decorations.

That’s a detailed process that seems to get worse each year, starting with stripping countless strands of tinsel and ornaments from the tree, crawling under it to unscrew the stand while leftover water sloshes onto my sleeves, then lugging the tree out of the den and through the washroom and Florida room, leaving a trail of needles in my wake, to the curb.

Note to self: Next year, get a fake tree.

The next step entailed climbing the rickety ladder to the attic while hoisting boxes and cartons containing tree lights and the roughly 200 ornaments that dangle from every branch while deftly stepping around the boxes and cartons of decorations from Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Then came the hard part.

Thomas Kincaid displays, decades’ worth of holiday sweaters and assorted other knickknacks are stored in a cubby hole in the back of a closet.

Access is gained by unhooking a wooden plate while roughly 10 hangers stab me in the neck, then hoisting myself through an opening that has shrunk considerably through the years.

The floor is now covered with plywood, the aftermath of when I pulled a Clark Griswold a couple years ago and my foot went through the floor.

Once there, I tried to ignore the pain shooting through my knees while crouching long enough to grab and store the decorations. Squatting was a necessity, lest my scalp come into contact with the nails jutting out from the ceiling.

Exiting meant wiggling backwards through the opening and bracing on the edge while my wife guided my legs onto a step stool, knocking off more hangers in the process.

And you thought the Eagles had a tough day.

The Birds played badly enough to nearly cause me to lose my croquettes.

Despite the setback, they are headed to the playoffs but have given little indication they will be able to advance beyond Monday’s first-round game at Tampa.

Longtime Philly fans are comparing it to the Phillies’ infamous collapse in 1964. This one is worse. At 10-1, they had everyone thinking about another trip to the Super Bowl.

Of course, a comeback is possible, but highly unlikely. I have a better chance of convincing my wife to get an artificial tree next Christmas.

Local NFL update

Two former local high school players will be facing each other in the first round of the NFL playoffs this weekend.

Dallas (12-5), the No. 2 seed in the NFC, will play host to No. 7 Green Bay (9-8), in the first round Sunday at 4:30

p.m. The Cowboys defense features second-year safety Markquese Bell (Bridgeton High School) while second-year wide receiver Bo Melton (Cedar Creek, Mays Landing) has become a key part of the Packers’ offense.

Bell, 25, ended the regular season with 94 tackles and two forced fumbles, both second-best on the team.

He had two tackles and a pass defense in last Sunday’s 38-10 win over Washington, which enabled the Cowboys to clinch the NFC East title.

Melton, 25, caught 16 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown down the stretch for the Packers after being promoted from the practice squad late in the season. He had five catches for 62 yards and two carries for 14 yards in Green Bay’s 17-9 win over Chicago that helped clinch a wild card berth.

Over in the AFC, Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco (Vineland) will be trying to win the Super Bowl for the second straight season. Kansas City (11-6), the No. 3 seed in the AFC, will open the playoffs on Saturday at 8 p.m. against the sixth-seeded Dolphins (116).

Pacheco led the Chiefs in rushing with 935 yards and seven touchdowns on 205 carries and also had 44 receptions for 244 yards and two TDs. Another local player, Chargers defensive tackle Austin Johnson (St. Augustine Prep, Galloway Township) saw his eighth NFL season end last Sunday with a 13-12 loss to the Chiefs.

Johnson finished the year with 46 tackles and a forced fumble.
