The Atlantic County Republican Party celebrates a sweeping victory The Light with Raymond Tyler

lection Night 2023 (Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023) proved to be a night of validation for Atlantic County Repub-

licans.

The atmosphere at The Linwood Country Club was celebratory as the numbers came in, revealing sweeping victories for the county seats.

If there was anything close to an upset, it would be Joseph O'Donoghue winning The Atlantic County Sheriff seat from the incumbent Eric Scheffler.

O’Donoghue stressed that he would do what’s needed to ensure safety both in Atlantic City and the entire county. Mindful of the electorate that did not support him, O’Donohue explained that his term Issue 257

A tour of the Atlantic County Veterans Museum

tlantic County ranks 9th out of 21 New Jersey counties in the percentage of residents who are veterans. According to Stacker.com, 5.5 percent of the county population, or 11,470, are veterans, many with service in one of the last five conflicts beginning with World War II. Considering the county is 15th in overall population, Atlantic County should be proud of its record. The county is also one of the few in New Jersey with a military museum devoted to veterans of all wars.

The Atlantic County Veterans Museum opened in 2017 in Mays Landing, adjacent to the Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery.

The museum is a first in Atlantic County, said Michael Fedorko, Atlantic County Veterans Museum Foundation President. "The museum

covers all military battles starting with the revolution up to and including the conflicts in the middle east in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is important to honor our veterans. It is said that 1 percent of the citizens in America join the military. As it is said, 'all gave some, some gave all.'. Our military is what has kept this country safe."

The museum will be open for self-guided tours on Veteran's Day, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum is also open every Saturday, along with Thursday and Friday

during the same hours. "If Veterans Day fell on any other day, we would have opened on that day, as well," said Kimberly Brown, Administrator

for the Atlantic County Office of Cultural & Herita ge Affairs, which oversees the museum.

In 2013 , County Executive Dennis Levinson appointed former County Executive Richard E. Squires to serve as chairman of the Veterans Museum Committee that included veterans, historians and community members to assist with gathering, researching and accessioning artifacts and materials for the museum.

The committee received cooperation from the Atlantic County Veterans Museum Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to provide fund-raising to support the creation of exhibits, displays and the preservation of museum items.

“The Atlantic County Veterans Museum is intended to serve as a lasting tribute to our veterans and their families," Levinson said. "Through the collection of military artifacts and personal memorabilia we will share the contributions of Atlantic County residents to our nation's history. We welcome those from near and far to take advantage of this historic and educational resource.”

Fedorko, who served during Vietnam as part of six years in the service, said the museum is not just about history, as important as it is.

“At this time, the world is in a very difficult and tense situation, with China looking to take back Taiwan, the war in the Ukraine with Russia and now the Israel War. We are inching closer every day to the beginning of World War III. I often think of 1914, when Europe was in a very tense

situation as the world is now and the assassination of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary started World War I. Militants from the mideast countries are here now and have crossed at the southern borders so that we could have another 9/11 event. This is a wake-up call to America.”

The building that houses the museum was constructed in the early 1830s by Joseph West as a wedding gift for his sister Maria Inglis West.

She married Daniel Estell, a wealthy glass factory owner. Maria passed away in 1834, and Estell married Rebecca S. Smith. They had two daughters, Martha and Anna. As Estell’s empire grew, the town of Stephen’s Creek was renamed Estellville. Anna married Thomas Anderson Bourgeois and they had one child, Rebecca Estell Bourgeois Winston, the last descendant to occupy the home.

Active in local politics, Rebecca Estell Bourgeois Winston convinced the state legislature to create Estell Manor as its own municipality in 1924.

Rebecca became its first mayor of Estell Manor - and the first female mayor in New Jersey.

Fast forward to 1993 when Atlantic County purchased and restored the dwelling now listed in the National Historic Registry and included in the New Jersey Women’s Heritage Trail Guide.

↘Continued from 8 According to the self-guided tour booklet provided by Brown, the museum flows in chronological order beginning with the American Revolution.

Most of the artifacts on display are donations or items on loan from local veterans and their families. The revolution room features a reproduction of a mural of the Battle of Chestnut Neck painted by John Wanamaker for Fred & Ethel Noyes of Atlantic County.

The room also features letters from soldiers, a reproduction musket and uniform of the Continental Army soldier. The same room includes a Civil War era reproduction of an A-Frame tent, as well as several photographs of Atlantic County residents who were in battle. Also, on display in this room: a 1914 U.S. Navy uniform and a letter from the front during the Spanish-American War. The World War II display includes many photographs, along with a reproduction of a Marine Infantryman with gear manning a .30 caliber machine gun.

The World War II room splits into two separate rooms, and features a Pearl Harbor display, with captured enemy artifacts. Another unique aspect is the Stained Glass Room, which has on display stained glass windows by artist and veteran, Robert Exler, a former resident of Cologne. He designed and created them for the American Legion Post 430 in Galloway.

The Korean War exhibit highlights a reproduction of full daily uniform and gear of a Marine infantryman/ Navy Corpsman in battle at Chosin Reservoir. Upstairs, in the Vietnam

War Room, there is a full uniform and gear worn by a U.S. Marine rifleman belonging to Charles Kurtz, who was killed in action.

A newly featured item on loan to the Veterans Museum is the bullet-ridden helmet that belonged to Sgt. Harry W. Carrelli, a resident of Absecon. Artifacts from the Cold War are also on display. Desert Storm/ Desert Shield objects include various

styles of camouflage uniforms and the Global War on Terror features a flame-resistant camouflage blouse, as well as a 9/11 Remembrance Flag.

The meeting room includes both Navy and Aviation artifacts and memorabilia. In the upstairs hallway, there are several exhibits. The Women's Wall is dedicated to Atlantic County women who served, among them Lt. Col. Barbara Stern, the first female to

serve in the 177th Fighter Wing. On the opposite side of the hallway find the Flag Wall, with an outline of the history of the American Flag, which includes a 13-star flag from the USS Florida.

Atlantic County Veterans Museum is located at 189 Blvd Route 50 South, Mays Landing, NJ 08330. ast week, Danish conglomerate Orsted scrapped its Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects, and almost immediately, sought to break from its forfeiture agreement it had signed with the state’s BPU of $300 million if it failed to finish the projects.

Green Oceans Spokesman David Shanker shared: “Orsted should not be let off the hook for the damages it has caused our state and the marine mammals who inhabit and migrate along our

shores. Since 2019 when Orsted was first awarded the Ocean Wind 1 lease area and started its survey and development work, we’ve seen a tremendous increase in the deaths of marine mammals. Instead of giving this international conglomerate – that time and time again has broken from its agreements with the state – $300 million back, those funds should go towards preserving our shore communities and marine ecosystems while finding green energy solutions that don’t kill whales and destroy coastal communities.”

Eleven grassroots groups welcome Orsted’s abandonment of Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2 projects but vows to keep fighting

A

group of 11 grassroots groups representing coastal waters and communities against the industrialization of the Atlantic Ocean through Offshore Wind Turbine development welcomed the announcement

by Danish energy conglomerate Orsted that it was abandoning development on its Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2 offshore wind projects along the Jersey Shore. The announcement marks an important milestone in the coalition’s ongoing fight against offshore wind industrialization along the East Coast.

"We are in this for the long haul and we are not going away. We will fight to stop this every step of the way – in the court of public opinion and in the justice system,” said Keith Moore of Defend Brigantine Beach.

“We remain united in our efforts and commitment to stopping this reckless industrialization of our ocean and coastal communities,” added Apostolos Gerasoulis of Save the East Coast.

Protect Our Coast New Jersey Spokesperson Robin Shaffer said, “Governor Murphy issued a statement calling into question Orsted’s 'credibility and competence,' and their move ‘outrageous.’ You know what is

more outrageous? Giving away billions in tax and ratepayer money to a multibillion-dollar energy corporation, degrading marine fisheries, hurting small businesses and forever altering our coastlines. That’s what’s outrageous. Orsted’s decision to walk away was the right move and represents progress for New Jersey.”

The 11 groups operate along the East Coast from Massachusetts and Rhode Island down south to Virginia are Defend Brigantine Beach, Save Jersey Shore, Save the East Coast, Protect Our Coast NJ, Green Oceans, ACK Residents Against Turbines, Save the Horseshoe Crab, Protect Our Coast Delmarva, Protect Our Coast Long Island, Guardians of The East Coast, and Windmills in Saltwater ~ Versus the Voices of Reason.

Together, they actively represent more than 75,000 active followers. A petition launched earlier this year and shared by the groups reached more than 506,000 signatories.

“New Jersey was rushing too fast to implement offshore wind programs without doing its due diligence both in terms of the partners it was choosing to enter into contract with and the impact that these turbine systems and their construction will have on marine mammals, coastal communities and

their economies, and public safety,” said David Shanker, a New Jersey-based spokesman for Green Oceans. “Orsted’s proposed Jersey Shore projects were going to cost taxpayers all while failing to impact global warming. We hope our elected officials will make the most of this major warning sign and cease the reckless and rapid industrialization of the Garden State’s greatest gem, our shore.”

Each of the organizations plan to ramp up their efforts to protect marine life, ecosystems, coastal communities and their economies across the Eastern Seaboard from the dangers brought by other proposed offshore wind projects. More than 25 active lease sites remain slated for offshore wind projects from Massachusetts to South Carolina.

“Our fight continues,” said Mike Dean, of Save Jersey Shore. “These projects are unsustainable without outsize ratepayer and taxpayer subsidies and the industrialization of our coastline will bring with it environmental catastrophe. This reckless undertaking needs to be stopped.”

Orsted’s abandonment of its projects follows 10 months of unprecedented whale and dolphin strandings in proximity to off-

shore wind survey activity along the East Coast. More than 72 large whales washed ashore from Maine to Florida, including more than 30 in New Jersey and New York where survey activity increased significantly in conjunction with the increased whale deaths.

The action comes following a summer of widespread advocacy by the groups which helped change the course of public opinion with facts and increased political pressure.

Several of the groups, along with municipalities in Cape May County, New Jersey, also filed multiple lawsuits against Orsted and state and federal agencies challenging the legality of the projects, related laws, and the permitting processes.

Each of the 11 groups actively work to spread awareness about the negative impact proposed offshore wind turbine systems will have on the environment, marine ecosystems, coastal communities and their economies, commercial fishing and fish stocks, national security, mariner safety, all while failing to stem the tides of global warming. Many of the groups have also pointed to added financial costs to consumers as well as the taxpayers who will be offsetting the cost of these projects.

ith a five-day weekend on the horizon for hundreds of New Jersey school children this week — thank you, New Jersey Education Association Convention — now would be a very good time to start making plans for all those unstructured hours, especially if you want to squeeze in some family time before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Fortunately, there are some pretty fantastic activities spread throughout South Jersey over the next few days, from the extra special to the truly sublime. Investment makes Lucy much more than a roadside attraction

W

hether you’ve climbed to the top of the famous Margate elephant, simply driven passed to marvel at her beauty and size, or have only seen representations of her (check her out on a mural in Terminal A next time you’re at Newark Liberty International), Lucy the Elephant’s fame as a National Historic Landmark is undeniable. In fact, she is the No. 1 non-gaming attraction people inquire about at the Atlantic City Visitor Information Center.

This iconic elephant offers magnificent views of the city, surrounding skyline, and the ocean. As an Absecon Island local, I know that a drive through Margate wouldn’t be the same without her.

Lucy’s history, much like the attraction herself, is rich and robust. Lucy was previously owned by the Gertzen Family from 1887 to 1970. When the family wanted to retire from running the attraction, the elephant stood waiting for her demolition two blocks away from its current home. That is, until the Save Lucy Committee (SLC) was organized by a group of locals who hoped for a better future for the landmark.

SLC co-founder Edwin Carpenter actually paid $1 for the elephant. In 1970 the organization was fully registered as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and today there are 14 volunteer trustees on the committee: five are appointed by Margate City, and nine are voted in or appointed by the non-profit group.

Since Richard Helfant took over as director of the SLC in 2000, the structure’s status has been on the rise.

Helfant, a local who started working at Lucy when he was in the seventh grade by selling candy door to door to raise money for her restoration – shows his passion for the historical monument in his everyday work.

When asked who owns the landmark, Helfant replied by saying, “In my

heart, I feel the nonprofit owns the elephant. Afterall, we are the ones who saved her from the wrecking ball, raised all the money and restored her to her place on the world stage as the beloved landmark she is.”

Five years ago, however, their lease with the city was up. Because Lucy was located on land owned by the city, the mayor at the time declared that the city owned both the attraction and buildings on the property. Thus, the SLC had to agree to these terms in order to sign a lease.

The SLC recently completed a $2.4 million restoration of Lucy’s exterior.

Funding came from a combination of donations, the work of the Save Lucy Foundation, and two grants – one from the National Park Service and one from the state.

In fact, the US Department of the Interior, an organization dedicated to preserving culture heritage, deemed Lucy nationally significant enough to award a grant.

The team at Save Lucy applied for the grant under the Save America’s Treasures program and it was awarded, making the renovations and Lucy’s

revival possible.

Merchandise sales, tours, special events, and annual applications for state grants help pay for expenses.

Also, Save Lucy applies for grants from the New Jersey Historical Commission and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority. Although, there’s no guarantee they’ll get the grants they apply for.

The SLC expects its 2023 budgeted gross revenue to be $775,000. Its operating budget is approximately $750,000.

The organization’s aim is to break even, as nonprofits are designed to do. Any excess goes toward an endowment, which partially enabled them to stay afloat during the COVID 19 pandemic and 15 months of restoration.

It’s clear that the attraction is a draw to the region, inviting tourists and locals to experience her charm. It’s no wonder that the 175,000 annual site visitors feed local economic growth.

The present gift shop alone can hardly handle the volume of its visitors.

As COO and director of education, Jeremy Bingham explained, an investment in the future of Lucy would increase the attraction’s “self-suffi-

ciency,” which is why Lucy requires a more accommodating space in order to thrive.

The proposed new visitor center, the plans for which have been devised and approved since 2003, will be paid for on a budget just shy of $4 million. The funding will come from grants and a contribution from the SLC of $1.5 million. The organization has also asked the city to match up to what they are contributing, since they legally own the property and buildings (including Lucy herself). While the city’s contribution to the building renovations would increase the tax rate (by a quarter of $.0025), it would open many doors for more foot traffic including school groups, bus tours and special events. The new center will increase revenue for the SLC, many surrounding businesses, and beyond.

There has been some controversy about the SLC accepting funding from the proposed ocean wind farms.

A condition of their approvals on the federal and state level was to provide mitigation for nonprofits that could be affected by the wind farms. Lucy is one of those nonprofits and would have received $250,000. However, with the future of Orsted’s Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects in jeopardy, the funding to the nonprofits may not happen.

On the wind project itself, Lucy is neutral. What the SLC is most concerned with is preserving the history which has stood tall and strong for so long. The Save Lucy Committee is dedicated to exactly what it says it is: saving Lucy.

The question of whether Margate should partially fund the project seems to not be a question at all. The city owns the asset, the land and the building.

There must be a symbiotic partnership between the Save Lucy Committee and Margate City. Afterall, besides the beach and ocean, Lucy is Margate’s most valuable and recognizable Icon.

Plans for the building include an ocean-facing entrance, two ADA compliant bathrooms, a retail space that is more than two times the size of the current one (allowing the shop to sell over two times the current merchandise), as well as a breakroom for staff and a larger administrative office.

One of the most interesting planned additions is the interpretive center, giving less able-bodied individuals the chance to experience the attraction.

People that cannot navigate Lucy’s winding stairs will be able to take virtual tours on computers in the interpretive center. The organization plans to use this space to offer virtual tours, historical education, meetings and conferences. The plans also include a generator to power essential services including the fire suppression system inside Lucy. The site does not currently have that luxury.

The Beach Grille, situated directly between Lucy and the beach, and adjacent to Ventura’s Greenhouse (by about 150 feet), is set to be removed during renovations. It began to see a decline as Margate’s demographic began to change since the 1980s. What was once a source of additional funding is now a liability. So instead, the plans include a recreation of the historic Margate boardwalk, giving Lucy more visibility from the beach and offering locals a sense of revived nostalgia and ADA access to the beach and the site.

Assuming that funding is secured, contracts are expected to be awarded in April and construction will begin in May. And if all goes according to plan, the new and improved site will be up and running by Memorial Day of 2025.

The SLC, however, is planning to keep the attraction open for business and tours throughout the entirety of the project, including a temporary smaller gift shop.

The plans must be approved by the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office. Removing the Beach Grille was a “trade off” with the HPO for permitting the SLC to build a much larger building than what is currently on the site. If you get hungry after climbing all those stairs, though, fear not — there will be a small food concession in the form of an old historic Hires Root Beer wagon located on site. The semi-permanent structure will provide food (and hopefully root beer) and will be movable in case of a storm.

Some of the most important things for locals and tourists to know is the historic importance of this structure, its growth, and that keeping up with this growth will increase marketing abilities and stimulate the local economy. The gift shop has, as Helfant described, “outlived its useful life.” In other words, it’s literally falling apart from the shingles down.

With a larger space to host events, market the site and sell merchandise, the SLC will have to ask for fewer grants and have a more promising future.

Helfant urges that the restoration and preservation of Lucy is an opportunity for people to join a “movement to preserve a beloved national treasure.”

The site will offer more economic opportunity and in turn more community benefits, working in symbiotic tandem to preserve both history and community, as it has always done.

A pandemic hobby turned into a business

uring the pandemic, there wasn’t much to do. It was common to take on new hobbies, and one of the most popular ones was baking.

While some stopped with them as the world transitioned out of lockdown and back to normalcy, others stuck with theirs. A few even turned them into businesses. Cindy Capritti is amongst those who continued pouring into their hobbies.

Capritti, an investment professional, created a part-time cupcake business by teaching herself how to decorate the desserts via YouTube tutorials.

Baking cupcakes may seem easy, but hers are different. They’re iced to look like real flowers.

She watched videos that taught her how to make tulips, roses and sunflowers and how to mix buttercream to make the icing a realistic flower color.

“I couldn't really go out, and I love to bake, and I love to cook, and I really needed something to keep me busy and it really reduced stress for me,” Capritti said, explaining why she chose baking as a hobby. “My mother was a stained glass artist, and my grandmother was an oil painter. So I guess the art thing runs in the family a bit.”

Her love of cake stems from her youth. Capritti mentioned that she was raised to bring a gift, like cake,

when someone is sick, when there’s a funeral or when someone new moves to the neighborhood.

As if the realistic flowers aren’t enough to wow potential customers, Capritti also creates a spin on the regular dozen. Instead of putting them in a box, she arranges the cupcakes into a bouquet.

“It's really leaning toward more of a gift item than a food item because it's just something a little bit different that people don't see all the time,” she said.

In May 2022, her business took off after she created an extravagant dessert table for her daughter-in-law’s bridal shower.

After the event, several people asked her to make them cupcakes.

So, she decided to get certified to be a home baker through the State of New Jersey Department of Health.

Now that she has the needed legal materials, Capritti still works at Edelman Wealth Management, as she has for the past 30 years. However, when she gets home, she bakes.

“I bake very late into the night and on the weekends. And sometimes I'm working a lot because if I have a bridal shower coming up, I'll work till 6 p.m. or 7 p.m. at my regular job and then come home and start baking, but when when you do something that you love it's not really work,” she said.

ith the holiday season rapidly approaching (as it always does), what better way to get in the spirit of giving than with the Atlantic County Toys for Kids Program? Supported and sponsored by many local businesses, Toys for Kids is a South Jersey based nonprofit organization that has been around for decades, and their sole focus is spreading positivity to those who need it most.

The organization, run by retired Sgt. Greg Depiano, keeps toys circulating South Jersey by collecting toys from generous donors within local communities and gifting them to those less fortunate. They visit hospitals and nursing homes bring not just gifts, but Santa Clause and his elves (yes, they’re the real deal).

Just last year the team donated over 14,500 toys thanks to the donations from South Jersey locals. The team also organizes lots of fundraisers, toy drives, block parties and Christmas parties.

This year, they’re hosting a Beef & Beer with one of their local sponsors, Maynard’s Café in Margate on December 15, 7-10 p.m. On Dec. 17, they're hosting their Toy Distribution Run where, yes, you guessed it, Santa and his elves will be making a special appearance for selected families.

hen three friends of almost 25 years come together to create a true dream of a special event center, banquet facility and restaurant, you get the new creation of the Provenza Restaurant Event Center.

Partners Juan Garcia, Maurcio Baquero and Diego Amaya each brings unique expertise to the table to offer an experience like no other at the Jersey Shore.

Meet Tanner Tomassi; Ocean City’s rising pickleball star

he game of pickleball has picked up momentum in South Jersey over the last several years. In its earliest form, many players locally would utilize tennis courts as makeshift courts for regular gameplay. Now several facilities dedicated to pickleball have sprouted up in our region.

Pickle Juice, a state-of-the-art five-court complex, recently opened its doors in Ventnor Heights, and last week, Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City unveiled the city’s first ever pickleball court. With so much excitement surrounding the game, one local sports aficionado is taking his passion for the game to another level.

Tomassi is set to represent South Jersey by competing in an upcoming reality competition show titled, “Pickleball Paddle Battle.”

“I would love to have the community’s support in helping me win the franchise and bring it to Ocean City,” Tomassi said.

In recent months, Tomassi has relocated to Delray Beach, Fla., in pursuit of his professional pickleball dreams. Described as the mecca of pickleball, the town is home to the annual Delray Pickleball Open, welcoming nearly 800 players from around the world.

During our conversation, I asked Tomassi what message he would give to younger individuals inspired to pick up a racquet, to which he replied, “No matter what you want to pursue, there truly is no better time than right now. Focus on the moment and go after your passion.”

Winning: Start fast and finish faster

elcome to week #2 of the “Change Your Odds, Imagine the Probabilities” series.

This week’s “Six Words on a Boardwalk Bench” will help you increase your odds of winning and decrease your odds of losing. If you want to win and inspire or help others to win, you need to read this. I call it “The Art of the Start.”

You can’t move the starting line.

In every race, you have two lines – the starting line and the finish line.

Here is something that most people do not understand: You can’t move the starting line. You can only move the finish line! In life, you start where you start, but you can finish wherever you want. You basically have no control over where you start, but you have complete control over where

and when you finish. So, if you want to increase the probability that you will succeed, put your effort into moving that finish line as close to the starting line as possible, and start winning!

When I tell people this, they are confused. They say things like “Well, I decide when I am going to start, and I don’t really decide when and where I will finish because whatever the finish line is, and wherever it is, that’s where I need to go, right?” Not only is that wrong, it is absolutely wrong! You’ll never achieve your goals unless you take charge of that finish line and give in to the idea that you start where you are now. Let’s take a closer look at “The Art of the Start” and see just how to win every race you enter.

Start where you are standing now.

These days, we hear a lot about “equity” and the idea that everyone must start and finish at the same place. Well, that’s impossible. Not everyone is at the same place when they start. In fact, the starting line is largely determined by forces outside your control.

You don’t arrive at the starting line. You are at the starting line right now. Think about it. If you decide to start something, and you say to your-

Here's an example: I run the Ocean City Half Marathon every year. I don’t just walk up to the line on race day and start running. I start by getting ready for the race and taking shorter runs. But my starting line was the day I decided to run the race and began my preparations.

And what about finishing my practice runs? I determined how far the finish line was going to be for my practice runs. I can remember years when I was in bad shape at the beginning of the season. My first practice run might be only a mile, but guess what? I set the finish line myself, and I set it so close to the starting line that I got a “win” every time.

When I start something, I want a win. Why? Because winning is habit forming. So I do everything possible to increase my probability of winning – and winning often.

The most impactful thing you can do is to move the finish line closer to the starting line. Think about it.

Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m going to set really high standards and goals because that way, even if I don’t finish, I still accomplished something”? Well… that’s really stupid! Why would you want to set your goals so high that you decrease the probability of success?

Finish Lines – Not A Stopping Line People always confuse the terms “finish line” and “stopping line”. They are entirely different, and that difference can mean a real difference in your life! When I want to accomplish something, I set up finish lines all the way along to the stopping line. By the time I’m ready to stop, I’ve already had many wins. My winning habit is then so strong that I just keep on going. Every finish line becomes a new starting line. By the time I get to the finish line that’s just before the actual stopping line, I just can’t miss!

Don’t Start, Don’t Stop - You Choose.

At Stockton University, I teach a class called “Make Money & Pay It Forward.” Today’s students get all kinds of bad messages about building wealth because so many professors (as well as the major news media and the politicians) are telling people that they can’t win, and the only thing they can do is to have the government give them more money to make things “equal.” On the other hand, I tell them that they all have the power to build wealth because we live in the country with the greatest opportunity in the entire world.

Then I tell them about “The Art of the Start”. As we watch videos from politicians who say “you can’t win,” and from well-known speakers who say, “of course you can win, and

here’s how…” I sometimes hold up signs that say either “Don’t Start,” (in the case of the politicians), or “Don’t Stop,” (in the case of the famous speakers – including me). It might seem like a simple difference in philosophies, but it is actually the most important truth my students will ever receive. You see, it doesn’t matter if the odds are stacked against you. It doesn’t matter where you start the race. It only matters if you get a “win.” Then don’t stop until you get what you want! If you do that, you will also get what you deserve.

Ocean City gets ready for full schedule of holiday events

ummer is long past, and we turned the clocks back last weekend to end Daylight Savings Time, but that doesn’t mean the fun is over. Ocean City will be host to a full calendar of special family events through the end of the year.

The celebrations begin along downtown Asbury Avenue on Saturday, Nov. 18. In Ocean City, that means shopping in your pajamas for the Earlier Than the Bird extravaganza. The annual downtown shopping event will take place 8 a.m. to noon on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. Anybody (pajama-clad or not) can take advantage of early-bird shopping specials at stores on Asbury Avenue between Sixth Street and 14th Street and win special gifts and prizes Free horse-and-carriage rides will be available that day from noon to 3 p.m. The same free service will then be available noon to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 25 through Dec. 23.

It’s a chance to ride the downtown the old-fashioned way with boarding at Sixth Street and Asbury Avenue.

New this year: The downtown will be celebrating “Festive Fridays.” The fun will start on Nov. 24 with Ocean

With the help of an Ocean City Fire Department ladder truck, Santa will descend and help light the Christmas Tree and illuminate City Hall.

Eagles make dean’s list with midterm grades

o far, so good.

Sunday’s 28-23 victory over the Cowboys left the Eagles as the most successful team in the NFL heading into their bye week.

An unexpected loss to the Jets earlier this season remains the lone blemish on their otherwise flawless complexion. At 8-1, they own the best record in the league. A daunting schedule awaits them after their break, but as of now they are among the favorites to make it back to the Super Bowl for a second straight season.

This marks the seventh time the Birds have started 8-1. In the previous six seasons – 1949, 1960, 1980, 2004, 2017, 2022 – the Eagles either won a championship (1949, 1960, 2017) or lost in the Super Bowl.

At the very least, they’ve eased the pain Philly sports fans were feeling after the Phillies’ collapse in the NLCS. MIDSEASON GRADES Quarterback Jalen Hurts got off to a bit of a shaky start, but has since regained his status as one of the league’s top quarterbacks. He’s thrown eight interceptions already compared six all of last season, but has countered with 15 TD passes and has utilized the “Brotherly Shove” to rush for seven TDs. GRADE: A-minus.

Running back D’Andre Swift is clearly the team’s top running back. He ranks third in the NFL in rushing with 614 yards and averages 4.6 yards per carry. He would lead the league if he wasn’t forced to share time with Kenneth Gainwell and sometimes Boston Scott. Rashaad Penny has been a non-factor for some odd reason. GRADE: B. Offensive line They are still considered the top offensive line in the league. Ageless center Jason Kelce (he actually turned 36 Sunday) and right tackle Lane Johnson are among the best at

their respective positions. Left tackle Jordan Mailata has been dominant in almost every game. Guard Landon Dickerson has been bothered by penalties. Injuries have affected the rotation at right guard, with Cam Jurgen, Sue Opeta and rookie Tyler Steen seeing action. GRADE: A Wide receiver/tight end This is the reason the Eagles are 8-1. Wide receiver A.J. Brown has been a beast. He set an NFL record with six straight games with at least 125 receiving yards. He leads the NFC with 67 receptions for 1,005 yards and six TDs. Devonta Smith has also been a big threat with 42 receptions for 553 yards and four TDs. Tight end Dallas Goedert was off to a solid start before suffering a fractured forearm against the Cowboys. GRADE: A. Defensive line This unit has played very well.

Edge rusher Haason Reddick got off to a slow start due to a broken hand, but now is tied for third in the NFC with 7.5 sacks. End Josh Sweat is next with 6.5 sacks. Rookie tackle Jalen Carter is off to a great start with 4 sacks. Veteran tackle Fletcher Cox has played well. End Brandon Graham had sacks on back-to-back plays against the Cowboys.

GRADE: B Linebacker They’ve struggled with consistency at this position, aside from Reddick, who is technically considered a linebacker. Zach Cunningham has been the best of the rest. He ranks second on the team with 54 tackles.

Nicholas Morrow has 3 sacks. Nakobe Dean was hurt early and is just now playing a bigger role.

GRADE: C Secondary The worst part of the defense.

Opposing offenses have lit them up.

Cornerback Darius Slay has been OK, but James Bradberry has struggled.

Rookie Sidney Brown has shown promise as the slot corner in place of injured Avonte Maddox. Safety Reed Blackenship leads the team with 55 tackles. The Eagles have to hope newly acquired Kevin Byard can help.

GRADE: D.

Special teams Place-kicker Jake Elliott is enjoying another terrific season. He’s hit on 18-of-20 field goals, including a 61-yarder against the Vikings. Punt returner Britain Covey is second in the NFC with a 14-yard average. Punter Braden Mann has averaged 48.1 yards per attempt since replacing Arryn Siposs. GRADE: B-plus Coaching Nick Sirianni has the team believing in itself. New offensive coordinator Brian Johnson had a rocky start, but has found his groove. The Eagles are second in the NFL in scoring at 28 points per game. Defensive coordinator Sean DeSai is doing a good job for the most part. They lead the league in rushing defense, allowing 65.5 yards per game, and top the NFC with 30 sacks.

GRADE: B. MIDSEASON AWARDS Offensive MVP: Brown Defensive MVP: Reddick Special teams MVP: Elliott OCHS surfing takes state title Congrats to the Ocean City High School surfing team on winning the National Scholastic Surfing Association state championship.

Led by girls varsity champion Brynn Gallagher, the Red Raiders scored 108 points to win its 24th team title since 1988, according to Downbeach.com. Nine-time defending champion Manasquan finished second with 92 points in the contest, which was held at S. Vermont Avenue beach in Atlantic City last month.

Gallagher, a junior, and senior Sophia Whelan placed one-two in the girls varsity event. Freshman James Carr and senior Ethan Dunn were third and fourth, respectively, in the boys varsity division. Senior Cooper Lysinger earned second in varsity longboard for Red Raiders coach Nate Garza.

With the win, the Red Raiders qualified to compete in the NSSA National contest, scheduled for next June in Dana Point, California.

After more than a decade, ‘Decades’ musical tribute returns to AC

ack in the mid-2000s, what was then Trump Taj Mahal (now Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City) hosted a series of concerts that still stand among the coolest programs ever staged in a local gaming hall.

The shows were presented under the “Decades” banner and each one featured a major pop/rock music act (among them Heart, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Elvis Costello) and an all-star roster of artists who performed songs by the headliner.

Some 15 years after the last Taj presentation, the concept has been revived by its creator, Barry Summers, and is returning to Atlantic City Nov. 17 and 18 as Ocean Casino-Resort hosts a salute to Chicago, the

groundbreaking band that was among the first to infuse rock with a heaping helping of jazz.

The concerts’ “hook” is the celebration of the 55th anniversary of the unit’s debut album, “Chicago Transit Authority.” Among those joining in the festivities are Robin Thicke (“Blurred Lines”), Daughtry, the rock band fronted by former “American Idol” contestant Chris Daughtry and hardrock guitar high priest Steve Vai, who has shredded for the likes of Frank Zappa, Whitesnake and David Lee Roth (he’ll be recreating the late Terry Kath’s iconic solo on “25-or-6-to-4”).

ing “Dick Clark’s American Bandstand” in Atlantic City, and through that, he developed a relationship with Steve Gietka, then the entertainment chief at Donald Trump’s three casinos and today, the talent booker at Ocean.

“They were looking to bring some new programming to Atlantic City,” he recalled.

“I think a lot of the promoters had a handle on the major headliners already coming into the market, and some stupid money was being thrown around at the time in order to get the A-List acts.

“So, there was the need for unique programming that didn’t involve the big promoters. I talked to [Gietka] about basically acting as an in-house production company to produce this level of concert programming that you couldn’t see anywhere else but Atlantic City.

And from there, we looked at some of the artists we could feature and some of the guests we could secure.”

Nonetheless, admitted Summers, success wasn’t guaranteed.

“Atlantic City's a tough market,” he said. “It's not Vegas, it's not where you would traditionally find a concert film or a concert TV series being produced. But we kicked it off [at the Taj and the response was really overwhelming. The fans loved it, the players loved it and, most importantly, the marketing people at the casino felt like they had a brand that they could promote that didn't conflict with the existing tours and the other shows that were going on in the marketplace.”

Summers noted he had been kicking around the idea of reviving the “Decades” idea for years, but he got involved in a different project, an online live-music network/archive called FanTracks (live.fantracks.com). And then, Covid-19 arrived, shutting down the live-entertainment industry in its wake. But eventually, Gietka reached out to him looking for booking ideas and the deal to revive “Decades” was sealed.

As for next week’s gigs, showcasing Chicago was pretty much a no-brainer for Summers. “I have an older brother who spoon-fed me this classic rock music; the earliest memories of my childhood were hearing ‘Chicago Live at Carnegie Hall,’ and Terry Kath being the god of rock and roll guitar,” he offered. “So I understood Chicago far before the

The Chicago-born funnyman has been a signature headliner at the Big B for the better part of a decade.

Nonetheless, we can’t help but wonder how much longer he’ll be gigging there.

Because we have no idea of what his deal with the bayside gambling den entails, this is pure speculation.

But it seems that Borgata has been throttling back on headliner entertainment the past year or two (both in quantity and quality). Thus, it’s logical to think that at some point, the obviously high-priced Maniscalco could wind up at another AyCee address.

Hard Rock and Ocean would be the most likely landing spots, but Caesars Entertainment might want to consider him for either Caesars Atlantic City or Tropicana Atlantic City (whose 2,000-seat theater would make more sense).

Summers didn’t want to divulge too much about what’s on tap next week, but he did say that the concert will be divided into four segments and both the group’s biggest hits and “deep cuts” will be included, as will some never-before-performed-live songs. And there will be some 30 cameras stationed in Ovation Hall to record the proceedings for broadcast and online distribution.

Fans have the opportunity to purchase VIP ticket packages that feature a number of extras including Saturday and Sunday brunches with the performers.

As for the future, Summers indicated the Chicago weekend won’t just be a one-and-done. However, he didn’t rule out moving it to another location.

“The plan is to continue ‘Decades’ shows,” he said. “We’ll announce more in Atlantic City down the road.

But we’re also looking at an alternative location; I'm not afraid to say it: Las Vegas.”

The craft and history of brewing

I

n your search for a unique yet qualitative establishment to enjoy a good brew, you may have come across one of many unique and highly reputed local craft breweries in New Jersey. The luxury of having an abundance of options to choose from, especially in NJ, was not always the case.

If you are well-versed in the history of craft breweries, you may already be aware of the hardships the industry has experienced in reviving itself. There are still many hurdles in the world of operating and running a small business such as a craft brewery. However, that can be tackled another day or on one of your latenight Wikipedia research sessions.

In this iteration, our aim is to provide a brief history of the craft and the history of brewing, its origins, how it has evolved over the years and its present state. So, buckle your seat belts and let’s begin our journey!

Disclaimer: We are avid enthusiasts of craft brewing, not historians!

The art of brewing beer has been a “thing” for about 5,000 years.

There is no precise historical record but a Sumerian poem honoring the goddess of brewing contains the best evidence of its origin. Often referred to as the “divine drink”, the Sumerians began cultivating grains for breadmaking and somewhere along the line, the process for creating a libation was realized. Perhaps a vessel of sprouting grain was left outside, got wet and began to ferment. Whoever discovered this “mistake” liked what they found and the rest is history, or more specifically, zymurgy.

Brewing then found its way into Egypt where Pharaohs were found buried with jars filled with their favorite brews and eventually to the Greeks and Romans who weren’t as fond of it as they were of wine and designated it as a drink of the “barbarians”. Regardless, the Romans did spread the brewing process into their northern borders where the climate was too cold to grow vineyards, thereby introducing the craft to Europe. Ancient beer was specifically made with grains. However, during the Middle Ages, hops were introduced and have now become an integral part of the recipe.

In ancient times, the brewed beer was not filtered and had grains

and other debris floating on the surface. Therefore, beer consumption was often done by individuals sipping collectively from one vessel via reed straws. This habit resulted in beer often being categorized as an important social and communal activity as well as for diplomacy. A beverage shared from one vessel would allow the host to demonstrate to their guests that the drink was not poisoned or of an inferior quality. Even though we now enjoy our favorite brews in our own glasses, the gesture of clinking them together for a toast transports us back in

time and symbolizes the unification of our individual glasses into one vessel.

The industrial revolution was a watershed moment in the beer brewing process. The inventions led to immense improvement and efficiency. This allowed the opportunity to drastically scale up production and opened doors to mass distribution.

Unfortunately, in order to cater to a large consumer base, unique flavors and styles were often disregarded and sidestepped over more neutral and “mild” flavors that would easily be accepted by the palettes of the masses. In the 1870s, there were 4,100 breweries in the United States. That number would be a high point not reached again until 2015! Additionally, prohibition (1920-1933) saw the demise of more than 1,200 breweries.

By 1970, 89 breweries remained. By 1983, only 49 remained and almost all of these remaining breweries were producing American Light Lagers. In 1978, House Resolution 1337 was passed and signed into law, legalizing home brewing and home wine making for personal consumption. These newly legal homebrewers once again began producing fresh, creative, and

flavorful beers. Some went “pro” and thus began the US Craft Beer Movement!

In the late 1800s, similar to a neighborhood bakery, butcher shop or hardware store, each town had its neighborhood brewery where one could stop by and indulge in complex and uniquely flavored beers brewed from fresh preservative-free ingredients. The Prohibition era nearly destroyed the small and local craft brewing industry. Some of the big manufacturers had the resources to ride out the prohibition and resume operations but the small local craft breweries had to rise back up from scratch. Many never did. The home brewing law has played an important role in relearning the art form and the lost craft.

One of the biggest motivations for us to establish Somers Point Brewing Company has been the aim to revive that era once again. Our mission has been to utilize our existing skill set in the brewing process yet still be open-minded to new styles and concepts to brew small-batch beers with an emphasis on premium ingredients, quality and flavor. AC event brings Cowboys and Eagles fans together

ans of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys have had Sunday, Nov. 5, marked on their schedules since the 2023-24 NFL schedule was released.

Other than a playoff game, the annual Eagles vs. Cowboys games are always the biggest, toughest and

most exciting regular season games here in South Jersey.

The Eagles, of course, are considered the “home team,” even though we are a good 90 minutes down the Expressway from Lincoln Financial Field. South Jersey is also home to many dedicated and lifelong Dallas Cowboys fans.

Although usually the rivalry is con-

fined to a few bars or living rooms locally, Midtown Atlantic City sponsored a large-screen, drive-in game experience on Sunday.

The stadium system television and speakers made the parking lot of Atlantic Cape Community College’s Worthington Campus the site of a great drive-in tailgate experience.

The weather could not have been better as the gametime temperature was in the mid 60-degree range. Midtown Atlantic City and ACCC supplied chairs for those that walked up. However, the parking was situated so people could watch and hear every play from their cars.

The good people of Midtown Atlantic City even provided a food truck with complimentary hamburgers, hot

dogs, chips and soft drinks.

The parking lot had more than 30 cars by kickoff. Walking around, it was clearly an Eagles crowd, but make no mistake, the Dallas Cowboys were well represented by their fan base.

In the end, the Eagles may have topped the Cowboys, but on this Sunday, the City of Atlantic City won a major victory for a fun day of enjoying a good grudge match.

eterans Day, our annual celebration to honor the service of American veterans, is Nov. 11, 2023. The holiday, originally called Armistice Day, commemorated the temporary cessation of combat in the First World War and occurred on the 11th hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month in 1918. After WWII, the name of the holiday was changed to Veterans Day: a day, according to the Department of Veteran Affairs, to honor all living and deceased American veterans. On this holiday I remember my father, Bernard “Mick” Setley, who served honorably in WWII as a member of the United States Marine Corps. To

hen discussing the rich history of jazz in Atlantic City, Club Harlem is the first venue that comes to mind. And that is as it should be as this legendary club, located at 32 Kentucky Ave., presented jazz of all kinds from its opening in 1935 to its demise in the summer of 1986.

Club Harlem was unique for many reasons: The majority of the customers were white. The showroom seated 900, with a cocktail lounge that seated an additional 400. And like many other clubs back then, Club Harlem had illegal gambling within until a 1940 raid put an end to it.

The longest-running and most fondly-remembered show there was called “Larry Steele’s Smart Affairs,” which ran almost continuously from 1947 until the club ceased operations.

It was an incredible floor show, featuring more than 40 acts, ranging from comics and dancers, to singers and novelty acts. White celebrities, including Frank Sinatra and Milton Berle, often visited in the late hours, and some patrons remember them getting up on stage and performing.

As a jazz venue, almost every important singer and player passed through Club Harlem, including Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, Louis Armstrong, Nat “King” Cole, Dinah Washington and Wild Bill Davis. In later years, Club Harlem played host to more contemporary rhythm and blues acts including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye.

Grace’s Little Belmont however, located across the street from Club Harlem, was a jazz club and only a jazz club – from its inception in the mid-1930s until it closed circa 1975. The Belmont was an “organ” room, meaning that many of its jazz headliners through the years were organ players who performed on the “house” Hammond B-3 instrument.

One of the reasons jazz organists loved the place was that they didn’t have to haul the hefty organ and heftier Leslie speakers in and out of it.

Duke Ellington’s famed alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges began dropping in to the club to sit in with Wild Bill, beginning in the late 1940s. It became a summer tradition for the two of them. In 1966, the pair made two albums for the RCA label recorded live at Grace’s Little Belmont.

Another regular at Grace’s was the innovative organist and pianist Milt Buckner, Lionel Hampton’s chief arranger and sometimes composer, who worked there on and off for years. For those who don’t know the work of this unsung giant, Milt Buckner invented the “locked hands” technique of jazz piano-playing, copied and popularized by George Shearing. By way of this method of playing – using all 10 fingers simultaneously to fashion “block chords” – a keyboard could almost sound like a full orchestra.

I had the good fortune of playing drums with Buckner in the Philadelphia area for three years, on and off, in the 1970s, and he spoke of Grace’s often.

Buckner loved to tell the story of the relatively untrained drummer Sam Woodyard, who joined Buckner at Grace’s in the early 1950s. In that Buckner was able to make Grace’s Hammond B-3 organ sound like a full big band, Woodyard got on-the-job training in just how the drums should be played in a big band. The lessons that Woodyard learned at Grace’s led him to confidently audition for Duke Ellington’s big band.

Trumpeter Clifford Brown and stayed until 1966. Everyone who played with Milt Buckner learned from him. I sure did.

Buckner loved to tell the story of who the bartender was at Grace’s Little Belmont: A retired dancer named Elvera M. “Baby” Sanchez, who also just happened to be the mother of Sammy Davis, Jr. Sammy visited Grace’s often.

Clubs like Grace’s and the Club Harlem mosty featured jazz performers whose roots were firmly in the swing era. There were exceptions.

The late and legendary jazz guitarist, Pat Martino, worked many summers at Club Harlem, and Grace’s booked some more modern players from time to time. But other nightspots, specifically the Wonder Bar on Arctic Avenue, booked the top modern jazz organists such as Jimmy Smith, Larry Young, Groove Holmes and Jimmy McGriff. Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey worked there as well before the Wonder Bar changed their policy and booked name rhythm and blues acts well into the 1990s.

Before it merged with Club Harlem in 1954, Club Paradise, on North Illinois Avenue, presented floor shows and swing era headliners like the Count Basie big band. Club Paradise made the jazz history books by way of the early 1950s residency of the ground-breaking composer, arranger and pianist Tadd Dameron. During the summer of 1953, Dameron led the show band at the Paradise which

featured, among others, iconic jazz saxophonist and composer Benny Golson, and the legendary trumpeter, Clifford Brown.

That summer was transformative for Brown, one of the most brilliant trumpeters in jazz history. Don Glanden, producer/writer of the definitive film biography on Brown, “Brownie Speaks,” and head of University of the Arts’ Jazz Studies Department, meticulously documented how important that summer was to Brown’s career.

“The band at the Paradise began to fall apart about three weeks into the season,” Glanden recalls. “Drummer Philly Joe Jones was busted for drugs and leader Tadd Dameron, who also had drug issues, got nervous.

Still, Quincy Jones, who got the word about how great Brown was, came up from Wildwood where he had been playing with Lionel Hampton, and convinced Hamp to hire Brown for a fall tour of Europe. And it was in that summer of 1953 when Brown made his first certifiable jazz recordings.”

By 1956, via his tenure in the group of jazz drummer Max Roach, Clifford Brown became one of the biggest names in jazz. Sadly, Clifford Brown’s life was cut short when he died in a car accident on the Pennsylvania Turnpike on June 26, 1956.

And what of jazz in Atlantic City today? For the past 12 years or so, Atlantic City’s Chicken Bone Beach Foundation has dedicated itself, according to its mission statement, to “turning the memory of an unfortunate chapter of American history into a positive force of good through jazz.”

“Chicken Bone Beach” was the name given to a stretch of beach around Missouri Avenue that was segregated from 1900 until the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

Among other things, the foundation presents jazz concerts featuring name headliners throughout Atlantic City, sponsors tuition-free jazz camps for Atlantic City children, and does everything possible to honor and preserve the rich history of jazz in

Atlantic City.

Further, there is now an annual Atlantic City Jazz Festival. Clubs like Kelsey’s in Atlantic City, Bocca in Margate and Gregory’s in Somers Point book jazz frequently; the Cape May and Exit Zero festivals regularly get national recognition, and since 2004, the South Jersey Jazz Society has worked tirelessly to promote jazz all over the Jersey Shore, most recently in a stellar concert at Somers Point’s Gateway Theater.

The jazz scene here is thriving, healthy, and growing, the Jersey Shore continues to be the home of the greatest jazz musicians anywhere.

And they still swing like the devil!

Recital to show off amazing Boardwalk Hall pipe organ

n November 15, Rudy Lucente will perform a recital at noon in the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall.

The venerable arena, a technologic wonder with no pillars to block sightlines, has hosted Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Neil Diamond, The Rolling Stones and the Beatles, among countless other stars. Lucente does not have the pop pedigree of the aforementioned performers. But the Philadelphia native does have a pedigree of his own to brag about.

It's more about the instrument he plays than the songs he performs. In a corner of the Main Auditorium of Boardwalk Hall sits one of the most amazing musical instruments created by man. The Midmer-Losh. In a city known for its firsts - first boardwalk, first amusement pier over the ocean, first rolling chair – the Midmer-Losh boasts the largest pipe organ in the world. If you’re counting, that’s 33,112 pipes.

Philadelphia store comes in at number two with 28,750 pipes while third place belongs to the West Point Cadet Chapel Organ at 23,511 pipes. The Wanamaker organ has more ranks of pipes than the Midmer-Losh, but still has fewer pipes. “So, size in this case is dependent upon perspective,” Lucente says.

The instrument has been undergoing a major overhaul for years, repairing damage caused by time, neglect and inadvertent harm, says Scott D. Banks, membership and events coordinator of the Historic Organs Restoration Committee.

by Atlantic City native Emerson L. Richards, who among his other pursuits, served as State Senator from Atlantic County. But pipe organs were his passion. Asked what he did, he responded "organ architect," according to the Historic Organ Restoration Committee. He published 80 articles in various organ journals. They also crowned him Commander-in-Chief of the American Revolution in Organ Building.

Behind almost every wall in the auditorium lies the 33,112 pipes – including the roof of the cavernous hall.

When you talk about an organ of these dimensions, you talk numbers to drive home the point. Pipes is one such number.

The hall, with over 5.5 million cubic feet of enclosed air space in over 7

acres in the Main Auditorium, is 456 feet long, 310 feet wide, and 137 feet high. “To fill the venue with sound, Richards designed an organ with some mind-boggling and previously unheard-of specifications,” HORC says.

Played to its maximum strength, it becomes the loudest music instrument on the planet, one that could have you running for the exits if played on all cylinders…or pipes.

When ownership of the Boardwalk Hall was transferred to the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority in 1992, the entire hall had fallen into considerable disrepair, along with the organ. But interest in the organ was kept alive through the advocacy efforts of the non-profit organization, the Atlantic City Convention Hall Organ Society.

In the late 1990s, NJSEA launched a tax-credit certified, $100 million-dollar interior restoration that secured a 2003 National Trust for Historic Preservation Award and made Boardwalk Hall Billboard magazine’s top performing mid-size arena in the United States in 2003 and 2004. HORC is a 501c3 chartered by the state of New Jersey for the restoration and preservation of the two pipe organs of Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall. In addition to the actual physical restoration of the instruments, HORC educates and increases awareness of the unique importance of these instruments as irreplaceable national treasures through programming and tours throughout the year.

Yes, Boardwalk Hall has a second organ, one well suited for a theater.

The W. W. Kimball, with a more manageable 4,151 pipes, resides in the Adrian Phillips Theater, which seats 3,000.

The theater is a room of considerable size: 181 feet long, 128 feet wide, and 75 feet high, with a capacity of 3,000 people (including the rear balcony). The pipe organ is situated in two chambers, one on each side of the stage in the standard arrangement for most theater organs of the era. The console is located in the musician's balcony halfway along the inner side of the room.

The Kimball and the Phillips Theater provide the setting for a silent film series. The most recent one, on

Rudy Lucente studied piano from age 4 and added organ at 13, As he got older, he studied organ with Dr. Keith Chapman and also worked with the American/Armenian composer Richard Yardumian. Since their untimely deaths, Lucente has devoted some of his musical activities to the preservation and performance of their works.

A member of the Philadelphia Organ Quartet, Lucente appears frequently as a recitalist and church music clinician for over four decades, He is a holiday staff organist at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square.

Lucente can also be heard playing the Wanamaker organ in Macy’s Center City store in Philadelphia, where he is assistant organist. The show has long been a popular attraction during the holidays.

September 27, featured the screening of “Speedy,” a Harold Lloyd comedy with organ accompaniment. The 2024 season will be announced soon.

Meanwhile, the noon recitals will continue Wednesdays through the end of December, with Lucente just one of a collection of talented organists who get to sit before the Midmer-Losh.

5 reasons why Christmas should stay in its lane

ovember is beginning to look more like December.

Wawa has red holiday cups.

Starbucks has already decorated its stores with a cardboard Christmas tree. Some cities are even putting up holiday decorations along their streets.

It's only the first week of November.

Thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet, and Halloween was just last week. Colorful fall leaves and acorns adorn front lawns, and most of us aren’t even close to being done with raking.

Here are five reasons why Christmas needs to stay in its lane.

1. Thanksgiving hasn’t happened yet.

In a conversation with my grandmother recently, she lamented that Thanksgiving is becoming a "forgotten holiday.” I agree with her; it's important to have a day to give thanks and show gratitude for one another without Christmas overshadowing it.

I understand that Thanksgiving is a holiday from an era of genocide against Native Americans. However, many people use Thanksgiving Day to pay homage to indigenous cultures and show gratitude for that part of our history instead.

2. It’s still fall!

It's not winter yet, so let's celebrate fall while it's still here. Autumn is a magical season of crisp breezes, beautiful leaves, harvest moons, and warm apple cider.

Why are we squandering this spectacular season of lovely foliage and perfect temperatures by pining for winter?

Winter will come in its own time. We can’t rush the seasons.

3. Not everyone celebrates Christmas.

I know most commercial businesses say “holiday season” instead of Christmas. However, I don’t think it's fair to assign blame to other winter holidays for what’s happening this November.

Most stores aren't decorated in white and blue with a cardboard menorah.

I also know people who don’t celebrate any winter holidays in December.

For example, some people celebrate the Lunar New Year in February but don’t really have any big celebrations during what is often considered the

holiday season.

I have always celebrated Christmas.

However, if I’m annoyed by Christmas creeping into the fall season, I can only imagine how people of other faiths feel.

4. Increased commercialization cheapens the holiday.

I understand that, in the United States, Christmas is a commercial holiday. However, at the very least, let’s contain that commercialization to the month the holiday is actually in.

My favorite parts about Christmas have little to do with money and presents. I like making my nana’s secret recipe for Christmas cookies each year with my grandma and watching “It's a Wonderful Life” with my dad each Christmas Eve. It's the traditions that make the holiday magical, not the materialism.

5. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

They say, “Keep Christmas with you all through the year.” Christmas is most special when it only comes once a year.

When Christmas is a two-monthlong affair however, I find myself exhausted and sick of it by the time Christmas Day rolls around. We need to pace ourselves so we don’t burn out.

A life well lived: A Tribute to my father, Charles A. Christy 1936 - 2023

W

hen someone passes, the first thing one tends to do is the math. “He was way too young.” “Well, he had a good life.

It was time.”

Ultimately, the dates are meaningless. It’s the dash that counts. The dash represents each moment and memory of the person’s life – the relationships, the love, the hopes, the dreams — each piece that contributed to the essence of who they were. My dad had a mighty and meaningful dash.

My dad was the heart of our family, reveling in all our traditions and get-togethers. He was our rock, the one everyone could count on, whether to lend an ear, give advice or pick you up in an emergency.

My dad cared for his family first and foremost throughout his entire life. It was evident in a million different ways. He

coached, cheered-on and played with his kids every day. Each Friday, he came home with a bouquet of daisies for my mom - her favorite flower.

I am flooded with memories of my father’s love and the quality time we spent together over the years. He’d write silly

stories for my siblings and me and then show us how to turn them into “real” books using an antique typewriter. Together, we invented a game called “abominable snowman,” which was our creative twist on hide-andgo-seek. He squeezed oranges and cooked pancakes for 20 girls after my sleepover parties.

He never missed a football, baseball, or softball game, play, or choir performance. He threw footballs around and hit ground balls and popups. He made sure I knew how to throw “like a boy.” (With two older brothers, how could I not?)

We lived in an old stone house that had a basement with a cement floor.

One day when I was about 7 years old I was learning how to roller skate, going around in circles in the basement when I fell. My dad caught me, but unfortunately, my helmet hit him in the mouth and took a big chunk out of his front tooth. He wasn’t happy but rolled with it, recognizing accidents happen. I never had to be afraid of him, quite the contrary. He made us all feel safe and secure.

My childhood was filled with family vacations - not the lavish kind, but rather a week of camping, hiking, fishing, and roasting marshmallows around a campfire. Then a week down the shore, building sand castles and walking on the Ocean City Boardwalk at night.

Back then I thought everyone’s dad was like mine. Now I know how lucky I was. My kids are also lucky.

They grew up with an incredible Poppop that did many special things with them.

My father loved each of his 10 grandchildren and four great-grand-

children beyond measure. He loved the times he would see everyone, whether a birthday, holiday or simply a visit. In the summers, he would take the grandchildren on tractor rides in a wagon, pulled by his riding lawn mower. He organized epic Easter egg hunts and often took them out for ice-cream cones.

There were many magical moments like when he took his grandchildren on the Santa Express train or his great-grandchildren to Storybook Land, but he was also there for all the mundane moments. He took my daughters to countless orthodontist appointments, babysat and drove them here and there throughout their teen years.

In retirement, my father loved to go to the Ocean City Music Pier and Kennedy Park to look at the water with my mom. He enjoyed cooking and going out to his favorite restaurants, especially the Crab Trap. He was a movie buff and kept up with the technology, often recording shows and even creating smart tv lists of movies he planned to see.

My dad's best trait was his a smile, always there, regardless of back pain and aching knees. He will be missed greatly and leaves a hole in our family and hearts. As our hearts knit back together, Dad's legacy of love and caring for his family will never be forgotten.

This year’s National Dog Show

he National Dog Show airs on Thanksgiving Day on NBC, immediately following the Macy’s Parade. It is filmed nearby in Oaks, Pa., at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.

The show and filming are open to the public at large and are widely attended. Here is a breakdown of what you can see at one of the biggest dog shows of the year.

There are a total of 1,866 dogs entered at this year's show. If you like Siberian huskies, there will be 55 of them entered for you to meet and see.

The National Dog Show is actually hosted by the Philadelphia Kennel Club, which is one of the oldest kennel clubs in existence and predates the American Kennel Club. Their first recorded show was held in 1876 under the name of the Philadelphia

Exhibition, which three years later morphed into the Philadelphia Kennel Club. The first Best in Show winner was actually my breed, a bull terrier.

One hundred and forty-three years later, the Kennel Club is still going strong. It uses the money generated by hosting this show to donate to different dog causes and research projects.

The National Dog Show is also one of the few remaining benched shows in the country. Benched shows require that all dogs that exhibit remain on the premises to be viewed by the public. Every year I meet people who come just to meet a bull terrier and talk about bringing one into their lives.

My dogs get petted and doted on by literally hundreds of kids. If you are looking to bring a particular breed of dog into your life, this is a great place to come and meet the people who live for that breed.

The top two registered breeds in the AKC, the French bulldog and golden retriever, will be well represented with entries of 31 and 45. If you are looking to learn more about

these popular breeds, this is an excellent chance to meet people who are passionate about them and who love chatting about their dogs.

The National Dog Show isn’t just about conformation. There are also vendors and informational booths to visit. My favorite dog collar maker, MacKenzie Belts, is always there. Every year, despite not really needing a new handmade collar, one of my dogs is getting a new collar. White Dog Bone is another excellent vendor where you can buy bulk dog treats like bully sticks to bring home to your dog.

There are flyball and agility demonstrations and a chance to meet the hosts of the show David Frei, John O’Hurley of “Seinfeld” fame, and Mary Carillo who is just always an absolute delight and really enjoys meeting the dogs.

The National Dog Show will be held on Nov. 18 and 19, but Saturday is the day to go. You can watch the filming of the groups that are shown on Thanksgiving Day and cheer your favorite on. Tickets are $16

for adults, $7 for children 4-11, and children 3 and under are admitted for free. The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center is located at 100 Station Ave., Oaks, Pa. nless you’ve been living under a rock, you are all too aware of the extreme run-up in housing prices since the middle of 2020. Prices in some areas have literally doubled in just a few short years. High home prices are great for sellers but not so much for buyers unless you are looking to downsize.

My view is that if you are both selling and buying high, I’m generally okay with that. Same if the market is low, buying and selling at the same time is a lateral move.

How did we get here? In 2020 during the height of the pandemic, the government decided to stimulate the economy out of fears that COVID-19 would severely damage the overall economy. We saw everything closing down and for a brief period of time, even the stock markets dropped radically, falling 30 percent in just under two weeks, something we have never seen before in our lifetimes. This led to reduced interest rate policies, which fell to among the lowest rates we have ever seen. The economy quickly stabilized, but the

loose monetary policies remained in place. With interest rates so low, it was hard not to look to buy property because the monthly payments were so cheap. During this time, even though the real estate market was starting to heat up, homebuilding was not. The inability to get labor, and high material prices caused many homebuilders to shy away from large-scale expansion.

Cheap loans, few new homes, and a roaring economy make for an ideal environment for existing home sales to explode. This led to a dramatic increase in housing prices. Add in the fact that we are in the early stages of the largest wealth transfer in history between the greatest generation and baby boomers at or near retirement and all that extra money, much of it being disposable, allowed prices to rise even further since the housing market was flush with cash buyers as well.

Now that interest rates are topping 8 percent, why hasn’t this slowed down the housing market? The high interest rates, which are due to inflation mostly caused by the overly easy monetary policy, are beginning to weaken the economy. This is actually a good thing so that we can get control of inflation.

The reason the housing market hasn’t yet seen the effects of the higher

rates is due to a few things. First, the higher rates haven’t yet hit the housing market. There is typically a delay in higher rates and their effect on housing. While it will hit the market soon, it hasn’t yet. Secondly, and the bigger issue is that homebuilders still aren’t building enough homes. At our current construction rate, we are still probably not going to fill the demand for new houses for close to four more years by my estimation. A lack of supply leads to prices staying higher for longer. Lastly, the wealth transfer trend I mentioned will continue for approximately 17 more years. These factors combined will lead to housing prices remaining elevated for the next few years.

On a bright note, I do believe interest rates will start to come back down mid to late 2024. The economy should continue to cool by then. The combination of these factors could hopefully cause housing prices to ease even if only slightly. Once supply returns to normal in a few years, we should see a further adjustment back to normal as well.

What must stay and what must go when selling your home

oving day is getting close and you are all set with boxes, tape and a truck. But before you begin packing everything in your home, it can be helpful to know which items typically stay with your home and which items should go with you.

Use this list to help you make your move easier and avoid potential conflicts with the homebuyer and buyer’s agent.

Items That Stay

It is important to understand that some items inside and outside of your home are part of your home sale.

Many of these items are fixtures, meaning that they are physically and permanently attached to your home or property.

Remember that you can choose not to include some of these items in the sale of your home. But what you choose to leave or take depends on your situation. If you want to keep something be sure to include it with-

In-ground Items Any outdoor features secured into the ground such as mailboxes, basketball hoops, and firepits are part of the home sale. This also applies to landscaping elements such as trees, plants or shrubs.

Light fixtures Even if you were the one who installed that expensive chandelier in the dining room, unless you list it as an exclusion in the sales agreement, it needs to stay. Remember, unless you let the buyer know about it, you should not replace a light fixture with a different one. If you want to replace a light fixture, be sure to do so before listing your home.

Mirrors This determination comes down to a case-by-case basis. If a mirror is hanging on a wall like a painting, you can take it with you. However, if it is bolted to the wall, you will need to leave it with the home. Typically if it is above a bathroom sink it would stay, unless you let the buyer know otherwise.

Window treatments, cabinet hardware, and doorknobs You will be expected to leave behind curtain rods, curtain holdbacks,

and blinds because they are installed and attached to your home. However, you can remove and pack curtains and drapes and take them with you if you didn’t already agree to leave them for the buyer in the agreement of sale.

Any hardware on your cabinets and doorknobs must stay in place. If you can’t part with a specific feature that you have installed, you must get the buyer to agree to let you replace it before moving out. You can also change these items before listing and or showing your home.

Smoke detectors You need to leave smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers behind when selling your home. When you negotiate your agreement of sale, your agent will discuss the specific requirements of obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy and transfer of ownership for your home in your municipality.

Paint If you have extra paint or wallpaper you have used in the home, you might want to leave it behind for the new owners as a courtesy in case they need to perform any repairs or touch-ups.

Items That Go

There are also items in your home that are not part of the sale. However, there may be exceptions depending on your specific situation.

Appliances Most of your appliances, such as refrigerators, washers, and dryers, are not technically part of the sale of your home. However, this can vary from sale to sale, and it is typical for appliances to be left to the new homeowners.

If you are not planning to include appliances in the sale of your home, make sure to include this information

in the sales contract. Also, if the appliances are being included and they are vintage, it is wise to include them in “As Is” condition.

Built-in appliances like dishwashers and some microwaves and ovens are fixtures and are therefore included in the sale. If you are leaving appliances behind, make sure to also leave any manuals and warranty information.

Hot tubs and above-ground pools A standalone hot tub or aboveground pool isn’t necessarily part of a home sale. However, you might want to include them anyway due to the expense and difficulty of moving these items. Also, due to the age of these you may want to include them “As Is” as well.

Furniture Unless you have negotiated and agreed with the buyer to leave and include it with the purchase of the home or to sell certain items separately, all of your indoor and outdoor furniture will come along with you on your move. Any built-in items such as shelving, desks or benches, will need to stay.
