Local woman celebrates 100th birthday

P

l ea s a n t v i l l e resident Mary Gelene Briggs celebrated her 100th birthday on Oct. 28, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Pleasantville.

A proud mother of three, grandmother of six, great grandmother of 20, and great-great grandmother of six, through the years, Mary worked in the Atlantic City Public School system, in the clothing industry, and on the Atlantic City Boardwalk at the former Playboy Casino. She still enjoys assisting her neighbors in any areas she is able and is known as a caring, sensitive, and loyal friend for many.

Ocean Wind Projects Canceled

rsted announced it is abandoning its Ocean Wind One and Ocean Wind Two offshore wind projects off the coast of Cape May and Atlantic County. The statement from the Danish offshore wind corporation came on Tuesday, Oct. 31, on an earnings call from Orsted's Headquarters in Copenhagen.

This comes after more than two years of aggressive and unrelenting legal and public opposition led by the County of Cape May. The last straw for Orsted appears to have been the filing by the County and multiple private sector Plaintiffs of a massive, unprecedented federal lawsuit challenging federal permits issued for the Orsted Ocean Wind One project.

“This is a great day for the people and businesses of Cape May County,” said County Commission Director Len Desiderio. “This is a great day for the Atlantic Ocean. This is a great day for the whales and dolphins. The massive, reckless experiment known as Ocean Wind One has been stopped and Ocean Wind Two abandoned.

There were many who consistently told us that we were wasting our time, and that there was nothing we could do about the project being built.

Well, I am happy that the County Board of Commissioners and so many in our business community and the grassroots groups that have been protesting did not listen to the naysayers. We are a small county down here at the southernmost point of New Jersey, but we knew all along that our economy, our environment, our very way of life was at stake. Orsted has walked away from Ocean Wind One, but we are not walking away from this fight. We intend to redouble our efforts to ensure that our horizon remains free of massive offshore industrialization.”

Orsted CEO Mads Nipper told investors that Orsted was walking away from the Ocean Wind One and Ocean Wind Two projects because “Orsted has taken the decision to cease the development of the Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects…Orsted has updated its view on certain assumptions, including tax credit monetization and the timing and likelihood of final

construction permits.”

“There is no doubt that our efforts played a significant role in Orsted’s decision to abandon Ocean Wind One and Ocean Wind Two,” said Former New Jersey Superior Court Judge, Michael J. Donohue, of the law firm of Blaney, Donohue & Weinberg in Avalon, New Jersey, who serves as Special Counsel on Offshore Wind to Cape May County. “When we began opposing Orsted’s actions more than two years ago, they said we were wasting our time. Many friends and adversaries throughout this fight took to referring to me as Don Quixote and told us we were as crazy as he was. But there was too much at stake to give up. They said there was nothing that could stop the Ocean Wind One project. When we litigated before the Board of Public Utilities, they told us we were irresponsible for opposing something that was a fait accompli. When we made Orsted sue us in order to get road permits and file easements, they said we were being unreasonable. When we filed appeals to the Appellate Division of the Superior Court, we were told we were wasting the Court’s time.

Without all of these actions by the County of Cape May, Orsted’s path forward would have been much more attractive. Economic factors certainly impacted Orsted’s decision to abandon Ocean Wind One. But there can be no doubt that after all that was done over by the County over the past two years, when the County of Cape May, the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce, the Wildwood Hotel and Motel Association, and a group of brave businesses from our Fisheries community had the courage to file an unprecedented federal lawsuit challenging Orsted’s federal permits, it is clear that the situation became untenable for them. Hundreds of thousands of acres of the Atlantic Ocean environment, as well as our local tourism and fisheries economies have been saved as a result.”

Along with Donohue’s firm, Blaney, Donohue & Weinberg, the County enlisted Roger and Nancie Marzulla of the Marzulla Law Firm of Washington, D.C., Dan Ginolfi and Howard Marlowe of Warwick Consulting of Washington, D.C., Anthony Bocchi of the Cullen Dykman law firm’s Hackensackffice, and the attorneys of Cultural Heritage Partners of Richmond, Virginia.

“I want to commend Judge Donohue for the unrelenting effort he has put in coordinating our legal and public relations efforts. Our litigation approach has been forceful and unprecedented. Our media campaign has spread the news of Cape May County’s efforts around the world.

There is no doubt that without the County of Cape May’s efforts on the legal and media fronts, along with our private sector partners and the grassroots organizations, Orsted would not have felt such significant pressure to abandon the Ocean Wind One and Ocean Wind Two projects.

I also want to thank Congressman Jeff Van Drew for his passionate and unceasing efforts on our behalf on the federal level. This is a great story of how a community pulled together against extremely powerful forces and ended up prevailing in the protection of our environment, our economy and our way of life.”

Brigantine Mayor Vince Sera, who has been a steadfast opponent of the wind farms, responded "The Brigantine community is happy to see Orsted pull out of New Jersey.

These ocean wind projects are bad for the environment, bad for our economy, and have no positive impact on climate change or global warming."

Keith Moore, Defend Brigantine Beach Government Affairs added "Our organization has worked extremely hard on behalf of all Brigantine and Downbeach residents to achieve this goal. We are grateful to all of our supporters who have helped us accomplish this through their volunteerism, donations, and moral support. We are glad that our residents recognize the damages that would have been done to our community and our ocean if this program moved ahead. However, this is only the first step. We have much more work to do."

Blue Star Mothers send care packages to military personnel for the holidays

etting a package with familiar and essential items from home boosts morale for military personnel deployed away from home.

Blue Star Mothers of America is a national organization of female relatives of military personnel who volunteer to send care packages to these heroes deployed for extended periods, especially during the holidays.

Although the name only lists mothers, the members aren’t just that. They’re also sisters, aunts, grandmothers and children.

The national nonprofit, which was started in 1942 during World War II at the Durant Hotel in Flint, Mich., spread across the country to include more

than 200 chapters and about 6,000 members.

A local chapter, NJ5, which is located in Galloway, sends care packages to military members who are deployed during the holidays.

When they first started with the care packages, they sent out 100 boxes. Last year, they mailed 150 and are hoping to outdo that number with a goal of 175 this year.

Each year, members gather at the home of Co-Vice President Stephanie Chamberlain to put together the boxes, which are set to be finished and mailed on or around Nov. 18.

The 501(c)(3) also takes care of veterans in nursing homes on Veterans Day by putting together packages with food items (including lots of snacks), hygiene essentials and puzzle books.

Sometimes they receive requests from family members or military personnel for specific items to be sent directly.

“If we have the money we will do any request we can. It's all about the money.

It's not about time, we’ll find the time to do it. We’ll find the people to do it,” said Chamberlain.

Lodge 2845, has more than 25 members serving South Jersey military families.

Throughout the year, the chapter has to raise funds to pay for the program through road cleanups (nonprofits are paid by the ACUA to participate), business donations, and money raised by selling items at local festivals and block parties. They also do coin drops at local stores.

“We do not get a break from the post office except for $1. So in years past, we have sent out a large flat-rate box full of food items, hygiene items… playing cards, whatever we can purchase that can be mailed out,” said Chamberlain.

“We do mail out snacks, but in the last year and this year, we had to go to a

medium-sized box because of cost… we take donations of money [and] items that are acceptable to be sent in the boxes per the Postal Service.”

Chamberlain, although born and raised in South Jersey, joined the chapter in 2017 after moving around for 30 years with her husband while he was in the Navy.

While traveling, she had always gravitated toward military groups, so this felt obvious.

Additionally, her two sons are part of the military as well; one was in the Army and the other a Navy captain.

“This has been my world,” Chamberlain said.

Pickleball dreams come true in Ventnor Business Buzz

reams really do come true says Lisa Brody of the new state-of-the-art pickleball facility, Pickle

Juice, which is located at the newly renovated Ventnor Plaza.

Her pickleball journey began seven years ago when she got the fever for the sport, just like the rest of the nation. Lisa would play hours each day and sometimes twice a day, meeting new people each time. She would stop briefly and grab a smoothie or juice and go right back to the courts.

She would ask family and friends if they had heard about pickleball, and she would tell everybody she knew that pickleball was extremely fun and social. A game for all ages, it is the fastest growing sport in America, growing at about 40 percent per year. It is easy to learn and to teach others.

Governor Murphy rejects agency budget with Parkway, Turnpike toll hikes

ov. Phil Murphy on Thursday vetoed the New Jersey Turnpike Authority budget two days after the agency approved a spending plan that includes Turnpike and Parkway toll hikes.

Murphy, a Democrat, announced the decision after the Legislature’s top Democrats asked him to intervene to halt the toll increases, which were set to take effect in January. The move comes less than two weeks before Election Day, when all 120 seats in the Legislature are on the ballot.

Democrats, who are stressing affordability issues on the campaign trail, are seeking to retain their majorities in both chambers.

“I am not satisfied with the justification provided for the toll increases reflected in the budget and need more information for why the board is taking this step,” Murphy said in a statement.

Murphy has the general power to override the decisions of state agencies by vetoing an agency’s meeting minutes. He vetoed the resolution adopting the budget but approved the rest of the minutes, a spokesman said.

Senate President Nicholas Scutari (D-Union) and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin (D-Middlesex), who Tuesday night asked Murphy to take this action, called the move “another win for the pocketbooks of New Jersey families.”

“We want to thank Governor Murphy for heeding our call to prevent this toll increase from taking effect, and we commend him for working with us on making the lives of New

Jersey families more affordable. From cutting property taxes to lowering the costs of prescription drugs, affordability is our number one priority,” they said in a joint statement.

Under the Turnpike Authority’s proposed budget, tolls would have increased by 3%.

“We respect the Governor’s decision to veto the budget and will be working to provide him with the additional information he wants,” said Turnpike Authority spokesman Tom Feeney.

It’s uncommon for Murphy to veto state agencies’ meeting minutes, though he’s done it in the past. In 2018, Murphy vetoed the minutes of the South Jersey Port Corporation after the board rejected Murphy’s request to do away with its general counsel. He also vetoed the minutes of the Delaware River and Bay Authority in 2019, stopping a $1 toll hike for the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

It remains unclear what more information the Turnpike Authority will need to provide to the governor.

Diane Gutierrez-Scaccetti, Murphy’s chief of staff, is also the commissioner of the Department of Transportation and sits on several boards, including the Turnpike Authority.

The planned toll hikes were not a surprise. The Turnpike Authority in 2020 approved a new toll indexing process to increase tolls automatically each year by up to 3% to pay for the agency’s capital projects. Since then, tolls have risen each year on Jan. 1.

Feeney said the agency’s current budget runs through the end of the year. The board’s next meeting is Nov. 21 at its office in Woodbridge.

Margate-based nonprofit helps those facing financial struggles due to cancer

A

ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1,603,844 new cancer cases were reported and 602,347 people died in 2020 in the United States alone.

Cancer affects families across the globe and billions of dollars are raised for research annually. Although donating money to research is vital, many patients face significant financial struggles due to treatment costs and time away from work.

In 2012, Aria Mazer and Joseph Orazi co-founded Toast Pink, a nonprofit organization, with a mission to help. The two wanted to be able to give money to the families directly.

“I had something [happen] to some friends a while back and just did a small fundraiser for them and

Individuals or families who have unpaid medical, mortgage, rent, utility, insurance or car bills, or even need help paying for groceries or transportation can apply online.

When the application is received, there’s a vetting process.

Once approved, Toast Pink pays the companies on behalf of its applicants. According to the nonprofit’s website, they’ve funded applications in excess of $80,000.

As for the inspiration behind the name “Toast Pink,” it’s twofold.

“Toast” came to them while participating in a walk for the American Cancer Society, which focuses on

The 501(c)(3) has a team of 10 volunteers who work to assist cancer patients and their families with chemotherapy, transportation, housing, durable medical equipment and bridging the gap of uncovered medical expenses.

Since the crew is 100% volunteer, over 80% is sent to the applicants, the other 20% goes back into the organization to hold fundraisers, which they host several of throughout the year.

In between two extravagant fundraisers, Mazer holds smaller-scale ones, like raffles with local businesses and events in her hair salon.

They hold two large events a year– one is a dance event and the other is the gala, which is coming up on Nov. 17 with a theme of Havana Nights.

The annual fundraiser is elaborate and elegant with a cocktail hour, plated dinner, a 360 photo booth and auctions, complete with live music– this year’s talent is the FM band.

n a dark, spooky Halloween weekend, dozens gathered at Absecon Lighthouse for an evening of thrills and chills. It was the optimal evening for a rare night climb to the top of the 228-step structure.

Downstairs, the venue hosted a unique event that sent chills down the spine and fascinated the mind.

NJROPE (New Jersey Researchers Of Paranormal Evidence) conducted a special paranormal investigation of the Absecon Lighthouse Saturday evening, Oct. 28. During the event, teams were split into groups of three. Moving from room to room, participants used various techniques

and equipment to communicate with long-lost spirits.

Special devices were used such as Structured Light Sensor (SLS) Cameras which are believed to allow the ghost hunters to capture video images of spirit forms not seen with the naked eye. Investigators were also prepared with K2 Electromagnetic Field Meters to detect any ghost activity, along with electronic voice recorders capable of picking up low frequencies.

NJROPE was formed in 2009 to actively research and respond to paranormal cases throughout the state. The team investigates an average of 40 cases per year, and according to Owner and Director Frank

Lazzaro, their members go through extensive training.

“We take a lot of steps to make sure personnel are educated and know how to use the equipment and understand the limitations of the devices they’re using,” Lazzaro said.

proximity to the coastline.

Its construction came in the aftermath of the tragic Powhatan shipwreck off of Long Beach Island in 1854 in which 311 passengers and crew members lost their lives when the 600 ton schooner sank in severe weather.

At one point, because of the number of shipwrecks that had occurred, Absecon Inlet was given the most unfortunate nickname of “Graveyard Inlet.” The light was first lit on Jan. 15, 1857, and remained active until 1933.

Throughout its history, Absecon Lighthouse has been the subject of paranormal activity. Prior participants have reported visible shadows, unusual voice recordings, even a full body apparition of a former light keeper. The adjoining oil house on the property grounds has been a hot spot for spirit activity. Participants in Saturday’s investigation were taken by surprise by a motion-sensor toy robot that moved by itself.

What makes events such as this special, according to lighthouse Operations and Education Coordinator Milton Glenn, is the opportunity for more people to take a deep dive into the landmark’s storied history and haunts.

“It’s not necessarily the history that we tell folks when they come through the front door on normal business hours,” Glenn said.

Tammy Sullivan is the chief of operations for NJROPE and has been with the team for more than 12 years.

She says that putting together special events such as Saturday’s paranormal experience takes a lot of teamwork.

“Everybody has their function, so they know what they need to do,” Sul-

livan said. “It takes a village.”

While the weeks leading up to October are the busiest months for NJROPE Paranormal, the team remains active in locating spirit activity on a yearround basis. Events have been conducted in various locations along the East Coast, including the Cape May County Museum, Cold Spring Village, Whitehall Mansion, and Elfreth’s Alley in Philadelphia. When the team is not on the road conducting investigations, you may find one of their members at your local library providing lectures on spirit sightings and previous findings.

Dementia Live simulator comes to Shore Medical Center PET HOTEL Views from the Shore

e have so many people in our Shore Medical Center community whose sole mission is to improve the lives of others. Not only have I seen it firsthand in our doctors, nurses, and clinical support staff, but I have also witnessed it in the non-clinical team as well.

Among this group is Lisa DiTroia, Shore’s Director of the Auxiliary and Volunteer program. In addition to her role at the hospital, Lisa is a key member of the Somers Point Rotary and has recently been volunteering at The Shores, a retirement and assisted living community in Ocean City.

This high-impact, dementia simulation experience immerses participants into life with dementia, resulting in a deeper understanding of what it’s like to live with cognitive impairment and sensory changes. ing to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are more than 190,000 people over the age of 65 in New Jersey who are living with Alzheimer’s Disease, which is one form of dementia. A significant portion of those people live in Atlantic and Cape May counties. With Shore Medical Center located just a few miles away from Ocean City, residents of The Shores depend on our hospital for medical care.

To help the hospital staff in their care of patients with dementia, Lisa brought a training program to Shore Medical Center called Dementia Live. This high-impact, dementia simulation experience immerses participants into life with dementia, resulting in a deeper understanding of what it’s like to live with cognitive impairment and sensory changes.

The experience is equally as valuable for those who do not currently care for someone with dementia as it is for those who are among 272,000 people in New Jersey who do.

I decided to participate in the program. It began with instructors providing us gloves, goggles and headphones. The gloves had a bit of stickiness to them which certainly affected my ability to feel and touch.

The goggles affected our peripheral vision. The headphones fed a variety of sounds and voices to impair the focus of our hearing.

As I entered the simulation room, an instructor read a list of tasks for me to complete, but with all of the noise projected into my head, I only understood a few scattered words.

I got to the room and saw puzzle pieces, shirts in various stages of but-

toning, dog food and a bowl, paper on the floor next to a dustpan and brush, among other things.

Unable to fully hear the instructions, I was confused and didn’t know what to do. So, I just started sweeping up the paper. When that was done, I felt I needed to do something, so I started rearranging shirts and then tried to do the puzzle but I couldn’t manipulate the pieces. I was lost. I felt completely helpless.

The simulation ended and I was led to another room, discarded my gear, and participated in a debriefing with others who went through the program. We were asked how we felt during the experiment. Words like overwhelmed, lost, confused, disoriented, anxious, scared, frustrated and inadequate were shared. The feeling we all had are the same feeling that people with dementia feel every moment of their lives.

We were all very thankful to Lisa DiTrioa for bringing this program to Shore, as it gave many of us incredible insight and a new perspective.

In November (Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness month) 2024, Shore will bring the simulator back and invite the community to participate. It is something that I everyone should go through. I know I’m grateful I did.

Atlantic County Animal Shelter waives adoption fees through November 15

n recognition of the first week of November as National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, the Atlantic County Animal Shelter will waive all adoption fees for dogs and cats beginning Nov. 1 through Nov. 15.

Sixty-three percent of American households include pets, yet fewer than 20 percent of pets are adopted from shelters.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to adopt a pet and become better acquainted with the shelter, a vital resource for our community,” stated Dennis Levinson, Atlantic County Executive.

Pets adopted from the Atlantic County Animal Shelter receive mandatory sterilization, age-appropriate vaccinations, diagnostic testing, a microchip and a free veterinary consultation. Adopted dogs also receive free obedience classes.

Normal adoption fees are $110 for dogs and $85 for cats.

Somers Point secures $2.3 million in grants for community upgrades

he City of Somers Point has been awarded several grants that will fund various new projects to improve the quality of life in the community.

“We are taking an aggressive approach to looking for, and submitting applications for grants that help to improve our city’s infrastructure and amenities to enhance the quality of life for Somers Point residents and also help to attract visitors to the city,” said Mayor Jack Glasser. “Our city is immensely grateful for the grants we have received that will empower our city’s growth and development.

They truly represent a commitment

to a better future for our community.”

The following are recently completed projects that were funded by grants: Numerous Bike Path enhancements were made possible by a $165,000 Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement grant from NJ Department of Transportation (NJDOT). With work completed just last month, the enhancements include three bike repair stations, the replacement of 14 benches, new bike racks near Dawes Avenue School, three bicycle and pedestrian counters, and the installation of a rectangular rapid flashing beacon at the bike path intersection with Ocean Heights

Avenue to improve safety when bicyclists and pedestrians cross.

Work was completed just in time for the busy summer season on a project to replace the lights on Bay Avenue. Thanks to a $154,000 Community Capital Needs grant from the NJ Department of Community Affairs (NJDCA), existing decorative lights on Bay Avenue from Goll Avenue to New Jersey Avenue were replaced with new conduits, poles, and LED fixtures.

The city used a portion of a $125,000 NJDCA Neighborhood Preservation Program grant to improve accessibility to the beach and the free summer beach concerts at

William Morrow Beach. The city purchased and installed a firm roll-out beach-access mat to create a safe, ADA-compliant beach access walkway on Bay Avenue between Higbee and New Jersey avenues.

Construction work is expected to begin soon for several more grant-funded projects in Somers Point, including the following: Utilizing a $145,870 FEMA grant, the city is preparing a bayfront neighborhood flood mitigation plan. The scope of work includes a topographic survey, video inspection and hydraulic analysis of the existing storm sewer system along Bay Avenue from the outfall to Shore Road, and conceptual engineering site plans and design recommendations for improvements.

The engineering design will include all necessary analysis and reports to support the future flood mitigation project.

The city has received a $350,000 grant from the NJDOT for a project to improve safety along Ocean Avenue from Steelman to Atlantic avenues. The project includes the installation of new curbs and sidewalks and the repaving of Ocean Avenue.

The NJDOT has approved the city’s plans and specs. Bids are expected to be received by mid-October with construction anticipated to start at the end of the month.

A $500,000 NJDOT grant will cover the costs of repaving Colwick Drive, Exton Road, and Devon Road.

the end of the month.

The largest of these recent grants to be received by the City of Somers Point is an $861,000 Safe Streets to Transit grant from the NJDOT for pedestrian safety improvements to Shore Road from Ocean Heights to Goll Avenue. The city hosted a public forum on the project at City Hall on September 14. The NJDOT’s Safe Streets to Transit program utilizes Transportation Trust Fund dollars to improve safety and accessibility for mass transit riders in the vicinity of transit facilities. These funds serve to advance transportation initiatives without burdening local property taxpayers.

The city applied for the NJDOT Safe Streets to Transit funding last year and city officials recently learned of the award and specific dollar amount. The project is now in a preliminary design phase in consultation with Atlantic County planners and all suggestions from the Sept. 14 hearing will be considered in the design.

Work will include new ADA-compliant handicap ramps at intersections, new crosswalks, and installation of a rectangular rapid flashing beacon at key intersections. Final design is anticipated to be completed in early 2024 with bidding in early spring 2024 and construction completed before Memorial Day.

Somers Point has a Grant Steering Committee composed of the City Administrator, members of City Council, the city’s grant writer (Rutala Associates), and engineer (Kates Schneider Engineering). The Grant Steering Committee meets

periodically to evaluate the City’s infrastructure needs and to identify potential grants that can help meet those needs. Once the grant money is received, actions are taken to spend the money to accomplish what the committee has set forth.

The City of Somers Point, with its slogan, "The Shore Starts Here", offers plenty of reasons to visit with its rich mix of beach concerts, farmer’s markets, festivals, and activities.

Change Your Odds, Imagine the Probabilities

his is the first of a threepart series of articles about “Changing Your Odds” in life. While it’s NOT about learning to win big money at a casino, the lessons I’ll give you in this series do come from my time as a Casino Executive/Consultant, in both Las Vegas and Atlantic City. In this week’s column, I’ll start with some background information. In the next two weeks, you’ll see how it applies to your personal life, and how it can make you a consistent winner – no matter which game you play!

Which Game Has the Best Odds?

As soon as I mention “odds,” the first question people ask me is “Which game has the best odds?”

So let’s get it off the table (so to speak) right now. But remember, my casino career was in the 1980’s.

Back then, I focused on three Table Games – Blackjack, Roulette, and Craps. Each of these games had one thing in common – there were good bets, and there were bad bets. For example, Craps had absolutely the best odds in the house for the players – but only if you stuck with the Pass and Don’t Pass lines. As soon as you started making those middle-ofthe-table bets, your odds of winning nosedived. Roulette was the same way, with lots of people betting on “Odd/Even,” resulting in another nice bonus for the casino execs at the end of the year! But Blackjack, that game worried us, because it was the easiest game to be good at. But even there, a player with an education, someone who knew the odds and could pace himself/herself, was our worst player, and by “worst player,” I mean that we beat them less often than normal.

Beat Them Less Often Than Normal?

Yes, I meant what I just wrote!

Even with our most competent Blackjack players, we (the house) still had the odds in our favor. We’d do almost anything to keep you at the table, especially if you were winning, because we knew a big Secret about odds – over time, the odds will prevail! We’d

SIX WORDS ON A BOARDWALK BENCH by Bill Quain buy you dinner, comp you a suite, give you tickets for a show – whatever, just so you would play longer. You see, if the odds are set against you, the longer you play, the more probability there is that you will lose.

Odds and Probabilities – A Coin Toss In a coin toss, there is a 50/50 chance that the coin will be either heads or tails. But, in any series of tosses, you can end up with one side far more often than the other. But even if the last ten tosses were heads, the probability that the next toss would be tails is still only 50%. So, if you are trying to identify a pattern, there isn’t one. No matter how many times a toss comes up heads, it is still just as likely that it will be heads again, on the very next toss. But, over time, you can expect the 50/50 split.

So, if a casino game is set so the odds are against you, even a little bit against you, over time, you’ll never win.

On the other hand, you can have a great night. For a gambler, that’s all you need, every now and then, in order to keep you coming back. But guess what? If you keep on coming back, we’ll all get our bonuses at the end of the year, because over time, we always win.

Your Life Is not A Casino Game Fortunately for you, your life is not a casino game, with pre-determined odds. However, there are people out there who are always trying to beat you, or take your money. They are trying to get you to play their games, where they have set the odds against you. But that doesn’t mean that their odds need to be your odds. Every day, for whatever you do, you can make small changes to the odds that bring BIG changes to the probabilities that you will succeed. But, in order to win these games, you need to be dedicated, smart, consistent and involved.

Play Life Like The “Long Game” Take this advice from a former casino exec – If the odds are against you, play less. If the odds are in your favor, never stop playing! In the next

few weeks, I’m going to reveal some odd-setting tactics that will put the odds in your favor. Once you put them into motion, keep on playing. Look, you’re not going to win every time, but over time you’ll always win! That’s a big secret – and one that almost no one knows.

Don’t Become A “Big Score Loser” I’ve watched gamblers who do well at the casino table. Instead of quitting while they are ahead they press their luck, and wham! Most of the time, they end up losing it all.

Don’t go looking for the Big Score.

Instead, work hard to get the odds in your favor, and keep your head – and your money. Remember, even great odds don’t mean that you’ll be successful each and every time. You are going to have losing days. Just don’t put so much at risk that you don’t have enough in reserve to keep playing. Over time, if you play it right,

you’ll be a winner – probably. But, if you bet it all, you’ll eventually be a Big Loser, and you won’t have enough to get back into the game.

Both boys also received gift cards for their fishing achievements. Dylan has won awards in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023. The tournament wasn’t held in 2020.

Among the adult anglers, American Anglers Red team took home the top team trophy for scoring 69.75 fish points. Delaware Surf Anglers came in second with 30.5 points, while Merchantville Fishing Club A Team placed third with 16 points. Fish points are awarded based on species

and number of fish caught.

“Of all fish caught, there was a total of 119 sharks landed,” said Ed Parkinson, tournament chairman. “There were only six kingfish caught that qualified for points, the largest being 13 inches. We had reports that some spot were caught and even a few blowfish. Usually, we get bluefish and even a striped bass or two, but there weren’t any this year.”

Shawn Kelly caught the largest fish, a 13-inch kingfish, while Greg Phillipe accumulated the most fish points among the men with 28.5. Among women anglers, none qualified for landing the largest fish, but Jane Jeffries won recognition for most fish points in that group.

The number of anglers fell short of expected with just 16 clubs and 10 individuals entering for a total of about 90 anglers this year.

Clubs usually field six-person teams.

Last year, the tournament attracted about 120 participants.

“ Unfor tunately, that seems to be a trend in fishing and hunting clubs all over,” Parkinson said.

“We’re trying to buck that trend and get more involvement from youngsters, teenagers and young adults.”

“Those two boys, Colin and Dylan, stole the show at our awards presentation,” said Parkinson. “I hope we get more youngsters fishing our tournament next year. They are the future of our sport and we’re looking for ways

to engage them in surf fishing.”

The tournament stretched along city beaches from 23rd to 35th streets, starting at 7 a.m., for two 2.5-hour fishing sessions.

The first session ended at 9:30 a.m., giving participants a halfhour to relocate to a second position, where they ended fishing at 12:30 p.m.

“Thanks to all our club members who helped stage the tournament,” Parkinson said. “It’s an all-volunteer army, from judging on the beaches, staffing our fishing headquarters at the Intermediate School and even preparing and serving lunch for everyone.”

The city provided complimentary one-day passes for anglers to drive on the beaches during the tournament.

Parkinson also was interviewed about the tournament on Mike Shepherd’s “Shep on Fishing” radio program on WOND 1400 AM and 92.3 FM. The fall tournament is held in coordination with the Association of Surf Angling Clubs and supported by organizations and businesses that donated prizes. Founded in 1913, the Ocean City Fishing Club is the oldest continuously operating fishing club in the United States.

The Hawks and Conway Twitty’s last night at Tony Mart’s

or Conway Twitty and Levon and the Hawks it was a nice summer run that finally came to an end. Twitty’s contract was up and he was “going country” with a new record label and the Hawks managed to get out of their contract early so they could back Bob Dylan as he “went electric,” booked for a world tour beginning in a week at Forest Hills, N.Y. So it seemed they were going in entirely different directions, but everybody was happy.

Because Tony was satisfied with the band that Colonel Kudlets was sending him to replace – Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels, and he really liked the Hawks – “they’re real gentlemen,” he agreed with their decision to go with Dylan. Tony also supported Conway’s bid to follow his heart and “go country,” so he threw them a party, and ordered a pair of cakes from Chester’s Bakery a few blocks away on Route 9.

As everyone who likes live music knows, the first and last sets of an extended engagement are always the best, as the first one is one to impress, while the last set is more casual, longer and more fun, with other entertainers usually coming by to jam.

Some big wigs came down from New York City for this occasion.

Some people who were there, including Tony's daughter, swear they saw Dylan, but if he was there he was in disguise; sat against the wall with shades on or just took it all in, and didn't say hello to any of the Hawks.

While they are still debating whether or not Bob Dylan actually came to Tony Mart’s to check out the Hawks in person, there were a few limos parked outside of Tony Mart’s that night.

Conway Twitty had just signed a new record contract with a major country-western music label. That was the music industry category at the time which also included singing cowboys like Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, who had to move over and make room for him.

To appease his agents and manag-

ers, he took the name Conway Twitty by looking at a map of the United States and picking out Conway, Ark., and Twitty, Texas. But he couldn’t do country and western at the same time so he followed his heart and went with the country twang.

Conway wanted to play rock 'n' roll under the name Conway Twitty and play country under his real name – Harold Lloyd Jenkins, which sounded country enough, even though it wasn’t ripe for rock 'n' roll. But the managers and record label said it had to be one or the other.

Then the Hawks played their last set of the night, their last set of the summer at Tony Mart’s, and their last set as the Hawks, and it was a rare one at that. They didn’t play their usual cover tunes, but instead played some of the original tunes they had been writing and working on all summer, but didn’t play because Tony didn’t want to hear that new stuff. “They’re playing for themselves and not the people,” Tony would say when a band played some original material, but on this night he let them slide for their goodbye, so-long, farewell show.

The Hawks were good to Tony and Tony was good to the Hawks and let them play whatever they wanted, just like Conway. On this night they had carte blanche; they could do whatever they wanted and could do no wrong.

The Hawks knew that their most rousing number was the old, traditional, “Go-Go Liza Jane,” so old that nobody knew who wrote it. They recorded it earlier that summer on Atco Records and released it as a 45 rpm single. It did the trick again, rocking the house.

They also played, “The Stones

For the finale, they went with what became the final song of the night and almost every night at Tony Mart’s, Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tenderness,” getting the slow dancers onto the floor for their final note at Tony Mart’s.

Gov. Murphy, Democrats stick with offshore wind despite end of major windfarm projects

ov. Phil Murphy showed little indication he would walk away from his ambitious renewable energy goals following Orsted’s withdrawal from two windfarm projects. Their withdrawal from two New Jersey offshore wind projects has upended New Jersey’s clean energy goals, though Gov. Phil Murphy signaled the state would continue its path toward more renewables.

The Danish wind giant on Tuesday announced it would cease development on two 1,100-megawatt wind projects off New Jersey’s coast, saying inflation, interest rate hikes, and persistent supply chain issues cut $2.8 billion from the first project’s worth in the first three quarters of 2023.

It’s unclear whether Atlantic Shores, another New Jersey offshore wind developer, will continue building a 1,510-megawatt windfarm

it won a contract for in June 2021.

Atlantic Shores in July warned it would need public dollars for its project to remain viable, just as Orsted had recently.

A spokesperson for the Atlantic Shores project did not immediately return a request for comment.

Murphy showed little indication he would walk away from his ambitious renewable energy goals — he wants the state to draw 100% of its power from renewable sources by 2035 — following Orsted’s withdrawal.

“While today is a setback, the future of offshore wind in New Jersey remains strong. In recent weeks we’ve seen a historically high number of bids into New Jersey’s ongoing third offshore wind solicitation,” the governor said in a statement.

Democratic legislative leaders, who have at times criticized the state Board of Public Utilities’ approach to offshore wind development, criticized the Danish firm’s withdrawal but also showed little

signs of backing down from wind energy. “We will continue to move forward and create a strong green energy economy that is both manufactured and constructed with union labor. However, these projects cannot be realized without absolute ratepayer protection,” Senate President Nicholas Scutari and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin said in a joint statement.

Orsted’s cancellations are expected to bring $300 million to New Jersey’s coffers.

As part of a lucrative incentive package approved in July that would have sent federal tax credits bound for ratepayers to the developer instead, Orsted agreed to place $200 million in escrow with the state and $100 million in securities that would go to the state if the developer failed to complete the project on time.

The bill required the Danish firm to enter a legally binding agreement to complete the project if it chose to retain the tax credits.

Republicans, who have railed

against wind energy for months, met the announcement with celebration.

GOP candidates have hammered Democrats over their support of offshore wind in the runup to Election Day next week, when all 120 seats in the Legislature are on the ballot and the GOP is hoping to win back control of the body. The party’s efforts have been successful in reversing what had been longstanding, bipartisan support for offshore wind. A Stockton Poll released in September found just 50% of New Jersey adults supported wind farms off the state’s coast, down from 80% three years ago.

Michael Makarski, a spokesperson for Affordable Energy New Jersey, which has opposed the governor’s energy master plan, called the administration’s approach “fatally flawed.” “This is the sad but always inevitable conclusion to the story — the underlying math never added up and no amount of state or federal bailout money could change that fact,” Makarski said.

Congrats to Cedar Creek, Hammonton, Mainland Regional, Millville, Pleasantville on earning victories in the first round of the state football playoffs last weekend.

Cedar Creek opened with a 33-20 win over Wall Township and will meet top-seeded Timber Creek in the Central Jersey Group 3 semifinals.

Hammonton avenged a defeat to rival Ocean City in the regular-season finale by winning the rematch 23-22 in the Central Jersey Group 4 bracket.

They will take on top-seeded Winslow Township Friday.

Both Mainland and Millville advanced in South Jersey Group 4. The Mustangs gained a 56-20 win over Manalapan and will next play host to Colts Neck. Millville, the defending state champions, will take on Shawnee after routing Northern Burlington 497 in the first round.

Pleasantville earned a berth in the Central Jersey Group 2 semifinals against Willingboro with a 55-22 romp over Johnson in the first round.

Two more local teams, Holy Spirit and St. Augustine Prep, will open the Non-Public playoffs this weekend.

St. Augustine, seeded fifth in Non-Public A, will play host to 12thseed St. Peters Prep Friday. Holy Spirit, seeded fourth in Non-Public B, will take on No. 5 Immaculata in Absecon Friday.

Kudos to the Lower Cape May Regional girls volleyball team and Wildwood High School boys soccer squad on earning milestone victories last week.

Lower earned its first playoff victory in the seven-year history of the program with a 2-0 (25-20, 27-25) sweep over Cedar Creek in the South Jersey Group 2 tournament. The Caper Tigers (13-8) were due to face top-seeded Barnegat in the second round this week.

Wildwood gained its first-ever playoff win with a 2-1 upset over Buena Regional in the first round of the South Jersey Group 1 soccer tournament.

“The boys came to play,” Wildwood coach Sal Zampirri told CapeAtlanticLive.com. “They really brought it. It was great to see them get that achievement.”

The Warriors also played well in the second round before losing 2-0 at Woodstown.

here’s no question that Atlantic City is an East Coast entertainment capital. But virtually all of the offerings--from top-shelf musical attractions to the moment’s hottest comics—offer passive experiences.

That is, the audience simply sits and watches the performers.

That is why the ongoing series of “murder-mystery” programs staged at the Starlight Room inside Resorts Casino-Hotel are so special: They’re the only gaming hall-sponsored entertainment events in which those in attendance are integrated into the proceedings.

It should be noted that these presentations aren’t based on the familiar template in which archetypal British drawing-room characters (and their servants) are the suspects. Instead, satirizing popular TV shows, including “The Golden Girls,” are the foundation; the next presentation is “Murder At the Perk: The One That Kills,” which is scheduled for Nov. 11, and which finds the characters from “Friends” involved in nefarious activities at “Perk Place,” an Atlantic City coffeehouse.

“It is an interactive event,” offered Traci Connaughton, whose Without A Cue Productions has been staging the shows at Resorts for some eight years. “A lot of people who haven't seen it before, they'll be trying to choose their seats and they'll ask, ‘Where's the stage?’ And I will say, ‘We don't have one, because we work within the audience.’

“We mingle throughout the room, but it's a fully scripted, fully performed show. It just happens to be [performed] in the audience rather than on the stage.”

According to Connaughton, who’s also bringing in the seasonally themed “A Dickens of A Murder” on Dec. 9, each of her productions springs from a 40-page script, but plenty of room is left for audience give-and-take. It’s simply a matter of the actors determining how involved

the folks in the crowd want to get.

“We feel out the crowd; we figure out who wants to do more, and give them more to do,” she explained. “But it's interactive in that we just kind of throw things out into the audience and see what we get back. And then we kind of riff with them in that way and with each other. So while it's not a hundred-percent improvised, every night is a little different.”

While audience members don’t have to engage with the actors, they are there to solve a crime. As such, everyone is expected to participate in what Connaughton called the “ballot break.” This part doesn’t determine who the “murderer” is, as that is already in the script. But it does give folks a chance to test their powers of deduction and reason. And the person who provides the most correct

answers wins a prize.

Incidentally, last weekend’s death of “Friends” co-star Matthew Perry will not affect the Resorts date.

Connaughton advised that Perry’s character, Chandler, isn’t the one who gets murdered. As such, “Just one line was switched out.”

The audience-solves-a-murder-mystery concept is neither new, nor limited to Atlantic City. So, what’s the secret behind its popularity? According to Connaughton, it’s a matter of how ingrained the concept is in popular culture.

“I think people like the idea of solving a crime and examining the clues and all of that,” she reasoned.

“Murder mystery as a form of entertainment is one of the biggest out there; look at television and movies and podcasts. People just seem to love it.”

Rainbow does Harrah’s As expected, song parodist extraordinaire Randy Rainbow im-

pressed with his “Randy Rainbow for President” extravaganza last Friday at Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City.

The set—which was framed as a campaign event for Rainbow’s fictional 2024 White House run--was one-third classic, pre-1960s nightclub act, one-third camp-drenched gay cabaret show and one-third progressive-Democrat rally. In all, it was a marvel of creativity and technology, and it certainly confirmed the star’s status as, arguably, the best musical comedian working today.

Rainbow’s stock-in-trade is taking popular songs (primarily show tunes) and writing wickedly funny lyrics that eviscerate those whom Rainbow opposes on political, philosophical and social grounds. But as is the case with his extremely popular social-media videos (we’re talking millions of views), his main target was Donald Trump. And therein was the problem with the performance.

As talented as Rainbow is (and make no mistake, his creative and performing gifts are many and varied), his turn was redundant to the edge of tedium. From the very start, he aimed his seemingly unlimited amount of vitriol at Donald Trump with his opening volley of “Don’t Rain On His Campaign” (e.g. “Don’t Rain On My Parade” from “Funny Girl”) and “He’s So Indicted” (“The Pointer Sisters’ “I’m So Excited”).

By the end of this sequence, it had to be clear to everyone in the house (if it weren’t clear before the show even started) how he feels about POTUS-45. But that didn’t keep him from returning to that theme time and time (and time and time) again.

While he also aimed his poison darts at various Trump stooges, acolytes and alleged co-conspirators, including Rudy Guiliani (“Rudy And the Beast”), Mike Pence and Marjorie Taylor-Greene (or “Taylor-Moron,” as he put it), he always came back to his favorite fish-in-a-barrel. By doing so, he took some of the shine off what could have been a truly memorable evening.

“I think you get smarter as the years go by,” Gurwicz said. “When we built Harbor Pines 27 years ago, we didn’t realize just how popular our banquet space would be. We got hamstrung and couldn’t run a daily food operation because we had to share that space with banquets and outings, so it was impossible to build a customer base for daily food because we were limited by the facility.

The course owner said golfers really wanted their own dedicated space like The Roost so they not only have a place to hang after playing, but where they can invite others to meet them after a round or to take family and friends when they are looking for a local place to eat.

“One of the advantages of having an owner from the beginning – from the very first blade of grass that grew here – is that you have this institutional knowledge of the place,”

Gurwicz said. “So, you can tweak this and that and meet the demands of the customer base. And this was just the right time to do it. Outdoor spaces after COVID became more appreciated and sought after, and it was time to take advantage of what we have here. We are an Audubon Sanctuary golf course up in an area that is protected and will never change. It’s beautiful out there, and we now have a dedicated place to celebrate that.

Golfers can step up off the course and not even go inside. It’s a more customer-friendly situation, and diners can now interact with nature. We have live music on Fridays, and the place is really progressing into what we originally hoped for.”

Start with The Roost’s killer chicken wings ($12 for six, $16 for 12) that are available in a variety of sauces, including the addictive blueberry habanero, which may make an appearance in this year’s Atlantic City Wing Fest at Golden Nugget on Feb. 3.

There’s also Big Boy Tots ($10), four giant tater tots stuffed with bacon and cheese and served with chipotle aioli; battered and fried cauliflower bites ($12) tossed in buffalo sauce with crumbled blue cheese; and Santa Fe eggrolls ($13) stuffed with chicken, cheese, Tex-Mex veggies and served with chipotle aioli.

A variety of soups and salads will please the lighter eaters, including the Mixed Berry Salad ($16) with seasonal berries, mixed greens, candied pecans and feta cheese; and the East Coast Cobb ($18) with mixed greens, hard-boiled eggs, red onions, bacon and blue cheese crumbles.

The flatbreads have become a popular item at The Roost, with the Caprese ($15) being the most popular featuring pesto, mozzarella, tomatoes and balsamic drizzle. Others include shrimp ($20) and cheesesteak ($16) options.

Handheld items – sandwiches, tacos and burgers play a huge role on The Roost menu. Check out the chili lime tacos ($22) with battered cod, lime slaw, salsa, pico de gallo and sour cream; the tuna melt ($14) with tomato and Swiss on rye; a BBQ pulled pork sandwich ($16) with cole slaw on a brioche roll; The Roost burger ($16), a giant, double burger with cheddar, bacon, onion rings and BBQ sauce; and the Cuban dog ($14) with pulled pork, mustard, pickles and Swiss.

For those looking for a more substantial meal, The Roost has you covered with about a half dozen entrees including steak and fries ($40) featuring a 14-ounce cowboy cut; BBQ ribs ($17 for a half rack, $28 for a full); pan-seared crab cakes ($40) with remoulade sauce, veggies and potatoes; Asian-glazed salmon ($32) with sesame crust; and chicken marsala ($25).

The cocktail list is impressive, particularly specialty drinks like the spicy margarita ($12) with Espolon tequila, triple sec, sour mix, habanero lime simple syrup and lime juice; and the gin and tonic ($16) with New Amsterdam gin, elderflower, cucumber simple syrup and tonic.

Happy hour is offered 3 to 6 p.m.

Mondays to Thursdays with $5 off appetizers, $6 specialty cocktails, $2 off beers, $6 wines, and there are some super deals worth exploring every Sunday during NFL games.

“Of course, we are catering to the golfer, but we also want them to bring a friend over, and the menu has

something for everyone to do that,” Gurwicz said. “Shareables are a big part of what we do because that’s what people want. It’s a very warm space that is not fine dining, but it’s not a pizza shop either. It’s a place where everyone should feel comfortable.

Gurwicz said that, like any business, The Roost has to evolve and find an audience beyond its core golf customer.

“So far, we are pleased with the response,” he said. “It has been wonderful. The best part of it is how our staff has really embraced it. We have such a great culture with our staff here, and they are a big part of The Roost’s initial success. You can

have a great place, but if there’s not that right smile greeting you or if you don’t have a well-made drink and good food to match, your vision just won’t be complete.”

“The new pro shop has a better location that made it more functional for golfers to check in when they come to play,” Gurwicz said. “It’s also what we needed to do to make space for The Roost. The day after we buried the time capsule, we ripped the grass for the pro shop expansion.”

Now that The Roost was completed in the spring, Harbor Pines will begin Phase 3 on Jan. 2, which will include a major facelift of the banquet space to modernize it and simultaneously beautify it with gorgeous hardwood floors, new ceil-

“We are hoping it will all be done in April,” Gurwicz said. “We are going through the rest of the facility to give it a proper facelift of our banquet

spaces and lobby. The upstairs will also be majorly renovated with new meeting rooms, and the new bridal suite will be fantastic. Everything we are doing is cosmetic and will offer a very rich banquet space which we feel is a lot more pretty and more conducive to large affairs because we can increase seating and use all of our spaces together.”

Now that there is a new pro shop, updated locker rooms, The Roost and – by next year – a gorgeous, new banquet space, Harbor Pines seems set for another 25 years … and then some.

“I think those who haven’t experienced it yet are in for a surprise,” Gurwicz said. “It has taken on a life of its own. The live music we offer on Friday nights is growing in popularity, and we are seeing more and more people that we never saw here before. But the beauty of The Roost and the future banquet space is that it will complete where the clubhouse really should be. We will be able to run multiple functions simultaneously, or even offer the entire space for one big function, and they will all seamlessly flow together. You can open the doors and have this flow of service with multiple bars, multiple kitchens and use the spaces inside

and outdoors. We don’t look at it as the next chapter or the last chapter, we see all of our progress over 27 years as one evolution. We liked our vision from Day One as an upscale, daily-fee golf course, and there’s a point of pride to maintain that. We want you to have a private club feeling at a daily fee club facility, and I think we accomplish that in a great way.”

Local high school performs at Foreigner concert

L

ongtime rockers Foreigner returned to the Hard Rock Casino in Atlantic City last weekend, playing two soldout shows at the 7,000-seat Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena. Though the current band lineup currently features no original members, many have been with the band for a long time, including frontman vocalist Kelly Hansen, who’s been with Foreigner since 2004.

Taking the stage at approximately 8:15 p.m., the group played the hits their fans came to see during an approximately 90-minute set – “Blues Morning, Blue Day,” “Cold As Ice,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Double Vision,” “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero” and others. While there were no original members, the ones onstage nonetheless were very skilled, with special shout-outs to lead guitarist

Bruce Watson, keyboardist Michael Bluestein drummer, Chris Fraizer, and aforementioned vocalist Hansen.

These guys can play.

Early on in the show, Hansen called attention to the fact that this was to be Foreigner’s Farewell Tour,” but as bassist Jeff Pilson also told us in an interview last week, “it’s a farewell ‘tour,’ but not goodbye forever.” So, like Kiss, Motley Crue, and others who have said they were on their final tour only to reappear on the music scene a short while later, don’t be surprised if Foreigner continues to perform or even record.

Our evening’s highlight was when the Holy Spirit High School Choir from Absecon took the stage during Foreigner’s last encore to perform their iconic ballad “I Want To Know What Love Is.” The choir did a nice job, and for their efforts, were gifted $500 by Foreigner towards their school music program.

Wine: It’s Greek to me!

id you know that Greece preceded most of Europe, including Italy, France, Germany, and Spain, in becoming a producer of wine? Yet

Greek wine is rarely mentioned by wine enthusiasts. Even throughout my sommelier education, Greek wines were mainly mentioned for the historical perspective. I spent the past few weeks investigating Greek wines to fill in a bit of my own knowledge gap. I hope you find it as interesting as I did!

The earliest evidence of grapes being used to make wine was discovered in Transcaucasia, a Middle Eastern region that encompasses the modern-day country of Georgia. Archaeologists dated these findings to approximately 6000 B.C., indicating that wine

OVERLOOKING THE BAY

has been made from grapes for over 8,000 years. Wine has been linked to Greece since around 4500 B.C.. For centuries, Greece was the dominant producer of wine and viticulture. They had many trading partners, including the Phoenicians, who spread viticulture throughout the known world of the time, including all the way to Portugal.

Additionally, it was the Greeks who brought vineyard agriculture and wine production practices to the Roman Empire. They recognized the outstanding soil, climate, and environment – what we now call terroir – and, around 4000 B.C., expanded wine grape production to what we now know as Italy. The Greeks called Italy “Oenotria,” meaning the “land of staked vines,” because they staked vines to produce a higher quantity and better quality of grapes. On the other hand, in Greece, grape vines were basket-shaped bushes, cultivated tightly and low to the ground to prevent damage from harsh winds.

Greece produced and traded good wine until the industry was undermined by war. The Ottoman Turks invaded and conquered Constantinople in 1453. Under Ottoman rule, consuming wine was forbidden, forcing the wine industry in Greece to become nearly extinct. They ruled over Greece until 1821, when the Greeks won independence after a nine-year-war. However, even after their victory, Greece struggled to rebuild the infrastructure of the country.

It wasn’t until the 1970s that a handful of entrepreneurial winemakers decided to resurrect the wine industry. Today, over 80 percent of wineries in Greece are less than 20 years old. Ironically, though Greece was among the earliest to produce and trade wine, the Greek wine industry known today is among the youngest in the world.

There are several classic varietals of Greek wines. Assyrtiko, pronounced ah-seer-teeko, is known as the queen of Greek grapes. It is indigenous to the island of Santorini and is produced into a white wine that is fermented and aged in stainless steel. Assyrtiko is refreshing and crisp with a notable acidity and a flavor profile of lime with notes of lemon, passion fruit and honey. There is a noticeable minerality of flint rock and salinity. Try the Stamnaki Peloponnese Assyrtiko for a lovely, and affordable, example. This very dry white wine is produced with 100 percent Assyrtiko grapes. It pairs exceptionally well with shellfish, seafood, and salad courses, especially Greek salads (obviously!).

Another white varietal is Moschofilero (moosh-ko-fee-lair-oh) from the Mantineia region. Try the Bairaktaris, Mantineia Moscholios. This is a very dry, light-colored white with the floral aroma of lemon flowers and rose petals. It has

a high acidity but is surprisingly medium full-bodied. You will pick up flavors of melon and pink grapefruit with notes of almond. This wine pairs well with grilled calamari, sushi, and oysters, as well as the Greek dishes of spanakopita and grilled chicken souvlaki.

If you are a fan of natural wines, try Lost, Peloponnese Dry White Blend.

This is easy to find on the shelf, as it has an adorable baby goat on the label. It is a blend of sustainably grown Moschofilero 80 percent / Malagousia 20 percent grapes. Lost is a pale straw color and has a hazy appearance due to having minimal intervention during production. It is a lower-alcohol (12 percent), easy-drinking wine that makes a wonderful accompaniment for appetizers and salad platters.

Greece is not known exclusively for white wines. The Bairaktaris, Nemea Monolithos Dry Red is made from the Agiorgitiko (ah-your-yeek-tee-ko) grape, grown in the Nemea region.

This very dry red wine has aromas and flavors of cherry, raspberry, and blackberry, with notes of black pepper and baking spices. I highly recommend this Greek red if you are a lover of Pinot Noir. There is a nice acidity that makes this wine very food-friendly. Pair it with roasted meats and poultry, or with Greek specialties, such as moussaka.

Though I am not Greek, this research struck a few chords with me.

I grew up in a suburb of Reading, Pennsylvania, close to where a very famous gentleman of Greek descent lived much of his life. His name was Gus Efstratiou, but you would better know him as Michael Constantine, the actor who portrayed the father in the “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” films. Michael passed away in August of 2021 at the age of 94. Though I did not know him well, I frequently saw him walking to the Shillington Restaurant for breakfast or attending concerts at the Reading Symphony Orchestra. I was also friends with the owner of a very popular Greek diner in Shillington, PA: John “Yanni” Frangakis, who was born on the Greek island of Chios. Yanni introduced me to some of the wonderful cuisines of Greece.

5 things to expect at the Atlantic City Tattoo Expo

hether you’re covered in ink or you’re new to the world of tattoos, the Atlantic City Tattoo Expo is a must-visit experience. One of the longest-running, continuous tattoo expos in the United States, the Atlantic City Tattoo Expo is a three-day extravaganza that celebrates all things ink, ink culture, the weird, wonderful and downright taboo. Started in 2001, the festival is held this year at Hard Rock’s Etess Arena from 5 to 11 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, with single-day and multi-day passes available. Here are five things to expect.

1. Art and Artists With over 120 tattoo artists on site, the Atlantic City Tattoo Expo is as much an art gallery as it is a smorgasbord of tattoo culture. Artists from all over the country, from The Catrina Ink in Brooklyn and Grave Tattoo in North Brunswick to Black Label Tattoo Co. in Frederick and American Tattoo Society in Fayetteville, will be

on hand with everything from traditional, Polynesian, new school, portraits and simple scripts, ready to do what they do best.

2. Tattoo Contests What’s a tattoo expo without some best-of-tattoo competitions? Chef Murphy prepares hot meals for neighbors in need

ollowing the success of the Oct. 29 Four Wheels and Hot Meals event where more than 300 meals were served at 842 Philadelphia Ave. in Egg Harbor City, a followup event has been planned.

Called Racing To Feed, it will take place at the same location 2 p.m.

People these days are struggling with food insecurity. We live in a world where people can work hard for 40 hours a week and still not afford enough food.

Local Chef Andre Murphy, however, is doing his part to provide some good news and relief.

Murphy, along with several volunteers, has been organizing events

to feed people for more than three years. He has made a name for himself as a chef and his signature dish, Chicken and Potatoes.

The chef has decided to use that success to bring attention to the fact that many people in South Jersey are food insecure in various ways.

He has organized Thanksgiving holiday feedings for seniors who are often confined to senior facilities.

The chef provides Chef Andre Murphy an opportunity for people, often forgotten, to have a great, fully prepared Thanksgiving dinner with friends within their buildings on that Wednesday. They can even enjoy leftovers on Thursday.

Tips for dealing with teenage puppies

W

hen raising a puppy, I always remind people that the process is a marathon, not a sprint. During that marathon, I find that the teenage months are far worse than the teething and housebreaking months. Your tiny puppy is going through some changes, physically. Their sudden memory lapse on what the word “sit” actually means is totally normal, and it will pass. Here are some tips to help you survive the sudden rebellion in your dog.

The most frequent mistake I see with teenage dogs is equating the physical size of your puppy with their actual brain maturity.

Puberty in dogs occurs between the ages of 6 and 7 months. It can last until about 18 months or so in some dogs. During that time, your

puppy has grown in size physically.

However, their brain is still trying to catch up.

Much like human teenagers, dogs are also going through hormonal changes that lead to the dog equivalent of hissy fits when they suddenly go nuts on walks or basically flip you the middle finger when you ask them to come. Even dogs that are spayed or neutered when young will go through this phase as their brains are growing.

When a puppy gets bigger, most people start giving them too much freedom too fast. It is during this time because their brain is under development that they really struggle with self-control. If you start to see problem behaviors and rebellion in your young dog, you need to go back to basics and keep boundaries in place.

Another common mistake I see is that when teenage dogs start acting out, everyone's answer is to walk them further and further only to be completely frustrated when getting home that the 5-mile hike did nothing to tame the beast. First of all, remember that despite your dog's size at this age, their bodies

are still under development. You will want to protect their joints until at least 18 months of age. Long, out-of-control walks on pavement should be limited.

During these months, I focus less on how far we walk but instead on how “good” the walk will be. Short walks are the key to good walks with teenage dogs.

During this phase of life, mix physical exercise with mental stimulation. Instead of just walking far, mix the walk with training such as rewarding them for ignoring distractions. Practice “sit” or “down” on a leash when distractions are present, which is a different skill than just sitting in the kitchen for their dinner.

On a personal note, a teenage bull terrier can challenge even the sanest and most levelheaded human around. I relate to the frustration that many dog owners feel in their dog’s adolescence. This is the time when young dogs start to chase squirrels and cars on walks, ignoring their owner’s commands.

Dog owners have to compete for their dog’s attention on these walks.

To combat this, I doubled down

on building a bond with my dogs. I train dogs that attention from their owner is equally as rewarding as chasing a squirrel and pulling their humans down the street in the process. While it's important to let dogs be dogs sometimes, start rewarding your dogs for obeying commands on walks.

It may seem like all of the training you did with your baby puppy is lost. Don’t fret. That information is still there bouncing around in that growing brain. With patience and consistent training, you will soon be on the other side of dog puberty, and the effort will have paid off.

here is a little over a week left to enjoy the two new exhibitions currently displayed at The Stockton Art Gallery. The two-story gallery has been home to “A World Lit Only By Fire” on the first level and “A Pinelands Portrait: Art of the Pine Barrens” on the upper level since Sept. 5.

Curated by Stockton University Professor of Art History Kate Ogden, A Pinelands Portrait: “Art of the Pine Barrens” celebrates the 45th anniversary of the founding of the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve. The country’s first National Reserve was established in 1978 and encompasses over one million acres of farms, forests, and wetlands in South Jersey.

The Stockton University exhibit is intended to celebrate both the Pinelands and the diverse artists who utilize the Pine Barrens to inspire their work. From painters and photographers to basket weavers and quilt makers, the gallery hosts unique pieces of work from over twenty artists, many of whom are local to South Jersey.

“With the goal of exhibiting as wide a range of art as possible, (I) looked for artists working in a variety of styles and media,” Ogden said.

401(k) mistakes to avoid

or most of us, gone are the days of pensions. They have been replaced with 401(k)s, and similar plans. By no means are 401(k)s bad, actually quite the opposite, but they are simply different than pensions.

The primary difference is that all of the responsibilities of a 401(k) fall on the employee vs. the employer in a pension plan.

Those responsibilities unfortunately also come with a common set of problems.

We have seen the same few problems over and over lately so I figured that this week we should address those issues so that we can help others avoid them.

1. Cash in the account. I’m alarmed at the amount of cash (non-invested) money I see on 401(k) statements lately.

While Money Market rates are higher than they have been in decades, this doesn’t translate well to a 401(k). For many, these cash balances are simply due to fear about the equity markets,

etc. I’m fine with cash in a brokerage account earning 5+% in a money market right now. What I can’t get comfortable with is having it earn almost nothing in a 401(k). Not only is the interest rate typically not acceptable, but a 401(k) is a retirement savings account that typically carries a longer time horizon. When I see 40–50-year-olds with high cash balances I know that they are likely missing out on a lot of potential future growth.

Having a cash drag of just 2-4% can have a dramatic effect on your future account balance. Keep cash in your high-yield savings accounts and out of your 401(k).

2. Not rebalancing your portfolio.

Rebalancing in general is an often-overlooked necessity in a portfolio. Many people have a difficult time selling “winners” and buying “losers” in their 401(k).

The reality, however, is that what is good (or bad) today may likely not be going forward, and a failure to rebalance can cause your risk tolerance to get completely out of whack. Rebalancing is key to maintaining a well-diversified portfolio which may likely perform better over the long run and be better suited to your goals and risk tolerances.

3. Not rolling over old 401(k) plans to your new plan or an IRA. Leaving money with a former employer is almost never a good idea. Companies often change

providers, etc. and your money sitting in those plans will likely get moved to different funds if you leave it there.

This can cause your risk tolerance and overall portfolio to be invested other than you intended it to be. Rollovers can also allow more flexibility than former 401(k) plans as well. Money in a former 401(k) plan can also be much harder for beneficiaries to track down.

4. Not checking beneficiaries. We already mentioned that it can be harder for beneficiaries to track down funds in an old 401(k). I think an even bigger issue with 401(k)s can be the beneficiaries themselves. When our lives change, we don’t always think about everything that needs to change with them. Beneficiaries are a key change we need to consider when we go through any major life change. Divorce, children, a new marriage, or the death of a spouse can all be reasons to need to update a beneficiary form. Getting married automatically changes your 401(k) beneficiary even if you don’t want it to. A new spouse would have to sign off on you naming another beneficiary other than your spouse. This could be avoided, however, with an IRA rollover.

There are many more potential mistakes to make in a 401k, but I just wanted to highlight a few of the most common ones we have seen lately. By reviewing these plans regularly, you can help prevent them.

A rollover of retirement plan assets to an IRA is not your only option.

Carefully consider all of your available options which may include but not be limited to keeping your assets in your former employer's plan; rolling over assets to a new employer's plan; or taking a cash distribution (taxes and possible withdrawal penalties may apply). Prior

to a decision, be sure to understand the benefits and limitations of your available options and consider factors such as differences in investment related expenses, plan or account fees, available investment options, distribution options, legal and creditor protections, the availability of loan provisions, tax treatment, and other concerns specific to your individual circumstances.

The Arc of Atlantic County golf tournament raises $124K

. Rice & Company Presents: The Arc of Atlantic County Golf Classic was held on Thursday, Oct. 12 at Galloway National Golf Club, Galloway, NJ. This year’s event brought in $124,000, to benefit The Arc of Atlantic County’s case management program, sports & recreation opportunities, and family respite.

Over 100 golfers played 18 holes during this golf fundraising event.

An awards ceremony was held and recognized the top three teams: First Place went to Nancy Wescoat, Dawn Brodton, James Andreacci and Tony Bonanato of OceanFirst Bank. Second Place went to Joe Viviani, Christopher Viviani, Michael Viviani and Jared Christmann of Boardwalk Honda. Third Place went to Tom Pohlman, Kevin Scull, Sean Scull, and Michael Adams of Golden Nugget Casino, Hotel & Marina.

A cozy recipe to warm your bones on a cold day French Onion Soup

I

don’t know about you, but recently I have been bundled under a fuzzy blanket, shivering in the dark as soon as the sun sets earlier and earlier each night.

During this cold, dark season, we seek warmth and comfort. No one wants a cold salad or soft serve ice cream; we crave hot casseroles, like Mom used to make.

In this issue of Shore Local, we give you tried-and-true recipes that will put a smile on your family’s faces. They’re simple to follow, quick to make, and truly embody the definition of comfort food. Here are four recipes to warm your bones this November:

Ingredients: ● 6 large yellow onions ● 2 tablespoons of butter ● 4 cloves of garlic, crushed ● ½ cup of dry white wine ● 2 bay leaves ● 8 cups of beef or vegetable stock ● 1 teaspoon of sugar ● 4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil ● 2 cups of freshly-grated gruyere cheese ● 8 slices of French bread ● Salt ● Pepper Peel and thinly slice the onions, or use a sharp mandolin to cut the onion into thin strands. There should be 10 cups in total of onion.

In a large Dutch oven (five to six quarts), saute the onions in 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Stir often until the onion is fragrant and transparent, 20 minutes.

and olive oil and cover with a lid. Turn the heat from medium to medium high and let the onions caramelize for another 15 minutes.

Sprinkle the onions with sugar and crushed garlic and let cook for another five minutes.

Deglaze the pot with wine and use a wooden spoon to scrape up the browned bits on the bottom. Add the stock and bay leaves and let simmer for another 15 minutes. Add salt and

pepper to taste.

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and place sliced bread on a sheet pan.

Lightly drizzle with olive oil and let crisp for 5-7 minutes.

Remove bread from the oven and cover each slice with a mound of shredded gruyere. Bake for another five minutes until the cheese has melted.

Serve the soup in the bowls and top with cheesy toast. Enjoy!

How Sam Butera brought Las Vegas to Atlantic City

C

ontrary to the widely-held belief, Louis Prima did not invent the concept of the Las Vegas lounge act. That honor belongs to guitarist/vocalist Mary Kaye.

Kaye and her trio were a wildly entertaining unit that virtually created the lounge phenomena around 1953 at Vegas’ Last Frontier Hotel and Casino. Whether by choice or by chance, Kaye and the gang created the free-wheeling, all-night party atmosphere where anything could and did happen.

Before Kaye, Vegas casino lounges were simply a place where gamblers could have a drink and rest a bit before returning to the tables. Not long after Kaye, casinos realized that

bringing talent into the lounges could not only be a money-maker, but could also serve as another reason a Vegas visitor would visit one casino instead of another. In other words, the idea became, “Hey! Look who’s playing in the lounge!”

Enter trumpeter/singer/entertainer Louis Prima.

Prima had been a big name in the late 1930s with a superior Dixieland outfit, Louis Prima and his New Orleans Gang, and was able to parlay that notoriety to become leader of a successful big band.

The band, which lasted from 1941 through 1951, was gigantic. Focused on Louis’ singing, clowning, and his Italian novelty songs such as “Please No Squeeza Da Banana,” “Baciagaloop (Make Love on the Stoop),” and "Felicia No Capicia,” sold thousands of records.

Prima’s band brought in an astounding $440,000 for a six-week stand at The Strand in New York City, and commanded as much as $38,000 for an afternoon performance.

During its years of success, the

band appeared often on Atlantic City’s Steel Pier. The Pier’s George Hamid, who had a soft spot for entertainers who were having career issues, booked the Prima ensemble as late as 1953, when Prima’s career had bottomed out. By then, big swing bands were long out of fashion.

Prima continued to lose big at the track, and he was paying alimony to several ex-wives.

In 1951 in Virginia Beach, he “discovered” a young singer, barely 20 years old named Keely Smith. Louis and Keely traveled around the coun-

try, picking up local musicians to accompany them in every town they worked, in hopes of recapturing the old magic.

As Keely said many years later, “Man, we worked in some god-awful places!”

In 1954, Louis and Keely snagged a booking in the lounge at the Sahara in Las Vegas. Years before, Prima headlined in the main showroom. That’s how far his star had fallen. According to Keely, “The band was good, and musicians were fine, but nothing was really happening.”

The something that was missing turned out to be saxophonist Sam Butera. Prima was told about Sam and his band, how electric and on fire the group was, and how they were knocking them dead in New Orleans with their mixture of jazz, rhythm and blues and rock and roll. He was so excited about what he was told about Butera that he summoned Sam and the band to the Sahara. “On Christmas Day,” as Sam once told me.

Louis, Keely, Sam, and Sam’s band – The Witnesses – the act just caught fire, and it wasn’t long before the lounge at the Sahara became the place for everyone to go, including the biggest celebs in Vegas.

By 1956, the ensemble was one of the hottest acts in the country.

Keely’s deadpan act played beautifully against Louis’ wild clowning and the romping and stomping swing of Sam Butera. Make no mistake about it: Musically, Sam Butera was the architect of the Louis Prima sound, beautifully combining elements of New Orleans jazz, Prima’s jiving Italian novelties, swing, and rhythm and blues – all backed with a percussive shuffle beat that wouldn’t quit.

After Louis and Keely divorced around 1961 Prima, with Sam Butera and The Witnesses in tow, continued with some degree of success, but it was never the same.

In 1975 Louis Prima was diagnosed with a brain tumor and lapsed into a coma. He was in that coma for three years before he passed at the age of 67 on Aug. 24, 1978. That was three months after the first casino opened in Atlantic City. Had Louis lived, he would have been a giant here.

When Louis became ill, Sam Butera continued on his own, but still felt he needed a female singer out front with him. He first paired with Louis’ last wife, singer Gia Maione, but that didn’t work out. Even though it seemed to be a dynamite act, Keely Smith with Sam Butera and The Witnesses, didn’t last either.

Sam, after watching and admiring what Louis did on stage every night for 20 years, had the spirit of Louis within him, and coupled with his virtuoso sax playing, Prima-like vocals, and a crack back-up band of Vegas’ best.

When Resorts International opened in Atlantic City, the talent buyers had to book headliners for the main stage, and had to come up with several lounge acts to appear in Resorts’ Rendezvous Lounge.

The buyers’ only frame of reference was Las Vegas, hence the booking of Butera, along with other Vegas stalwarts: The Treniers and Freddie Bell and The Bellboys, into the lounge.

Anyone who was there during the time Butera was in residence at the lounge will talk about unforgettable evenings of sheer energy as well as the “anything can happen” atmosphere that Mary Kaye’s Trio pioneered over two decades before.

Headliners finishing their stints at Resorts’ Superstar Theatre, including Frank Sinatra, would almost always stop in the Rendezvous to see and/ or kibitz on stage with Sam Butera and the group he now called “The Wildest.” All kinds of things went on in that lounge, and during my time as

columnist for Atlantic City Magazine, I was able to report on one of them.

Comedian Alan King, who had been headlining at the Superstar Theatre, wandered in the Rendezvous Lounge to dig Sam and the guys.

He came in alone and grabbed a seat at the

bar, sitting next to me. Seems my name was familiar to him in that my first book on jazz legend Gene Krupa had been published recently.

What I didn’t know, and what Alan King told me, was that he was not only a major jazz fan, but first got into the business as a bouncer and a doorman on that hotbed of jazz, New

York City’s 52nd Street.

I was beyond fascinated as he told me stories of how he knew Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and the rest of the innovative be-boppers on “The Street,” and how much he dug their music. Then he told me he was going to go up on the stage and “sit in” with Sam and The Wildest.

“And what the heck are you planning on doing up there?” I asked.

“Watch and learn,” he replied with a grin.

The next thing I knew, comic Alan King was up there scat-singing, ala Mel Torme’ and Ella Fitzgerald, and doing one hell of a job of it. He was swinging and kept up with every riff Sam Butera laid on him.

He finally made it back to his seat at the bar after much applause. I told him how much he was swinging and that I couldn’t believe what I heard.

His reply? “Write about that, kid.”

Alan and Sam, I just did.

Autism support group hosts Halloween Dance Party

he 3rd annual FACES 4 Autism Halloween Dance Party felt more like a summer event with July-like temperatures this past Saturday.

Over 350 attendees enjoyed arts and crafts, interactive vendor tables, sensory-friendly tricks and treats, a barbecue lunch, and a dance party with DJs Jacob Hackett and Ken Schaffer Entertainment.

The event offered special needs families of all abilities and ages to have positive sensory-friendly experience with their peers.

Special guests included Boxing Champion Kevin “Killer” Watts, and Miss New Jersey Victoria Mozitis greeted party guests and sang “Part of Your World” from "The Little Mermaid". There were dance contests, colorful costumes and Tropicana Executive Steward Larry Johnson flipped burgers for the crowd.

But not all renovation projects are created equal. Some are worth the pretty penny spent, but many can be a waste of time and money, with the return not being quite as high as expected.

When thinking of what renovations to make to your home, consider the following improvements that could boost the value of your property.

Flooring (Average Return On Investment 70%-80%) While carpeting may have been popular at one point, now it could seriously deter a potential buyer from putting an offer in. Hardwood floors

may be a large expense, but they are the way to go for any flooring renovation project. If you have the time and money, this is an investment to think about.

But if hardwood is too much out of your price range, consider laminate wood flooring, which gives you a similar look at the fraction of the cost.

till, the judges pushed back on the state on several issues.

Several sensitive places deemed gun-free zones, like schools and nursing homes, were included because “vulnerable people” congregate there.

Porter questioned the state’s definition of vulnerable people: “If the rationale is vulnerability, isn’t an adult male as vulnerable, since he can’t carry, as a child in that sensitive place against someone who is, in violation of the law, shooting guns?”

The law’s $50 fee to support crime victims also raised judges’ eyebrows, with Porter asking why the state is charging people a fee to exercise a constitutional right.

Law-abiding gun owners shouldn’t have to compensate someone else’s crime victim, added attorney Erin Murphy, who represents several of the gun owner plaintiffs.

“To attribute costs for someone who’s lawful and has never used their firearm or shot someone or caused mayhem or disorder, that’s the issue.

How can you assess that cost to someone?” Murphy said.

Cai explained the state has long charged for gun permits but hadn’t raised the price in decades, so the new fee merely aims to keep up with inflation. It also will help cover the increased policing costs the state anticipates as more people take guns into public places, she added. The state police commissioner said last

year he expected more than 200,000 gun owners would apply for gun carry permits in the wake of Bruen; the Attorney General’s Office is collecting that data but hasn’t released it yet.

Chung and Porter raised concerns about the law’s requirement that gun permit applicants present “reputable” people to serve as character references for them.

“Background checks are objective.

This seems pretty subjective,” Porter said.

Chung agreed, saying: “Who decides who’s reputable?”

Cai had a very Jersey response to that question.

“I suppose, your honor, if your reference is Tony Soprano, that would probably be a problem,” she said. “And I think the law limits it to people who are not related to you, so your grandmother could not vouch for you. But it’s just another citizen who knows you, who has information about your propensity to harm yourself or others.”

A decision in the case could take months.

The Value of a Funeral, part 4

n my last article, I wrote about the second of three points of view that come into play with funerals. We looked at the immediate families’ perspective and my own feelings at my mother’s service. It was very gratifying to hear from all the people she touched in her life. However, not everything was positive. This disappointment involves some backstory.

When I started my journey to become a funeral director, I had no real guidance. That changed after college.

I was in a work study program at a funeral home. They had a senior funeral director that was associated with the mortuary school as an embalming instructor. At school I was made aware of an award given out to a student upon graduation who showed the most growth and skill. I immediately went to him I would do everything in my power to earn the award. He took me under his wing and showed me everything that he knew as I worked alongside. At graduation I received the award. I was so grateful to my mentor.

I kept in contact with him, calling

him often. I felt very close to him and when my mother was diagnosed with cancer. He was kind and supportive.

When my mother died, he was one of the first people that I called. I told him about the services with the intention that he would come.

My mother’s services came and went but he never showed up. I was very hurt. The point I am trying to make is that we are all special to others. If we don’t show up for them in their time of need it can be devastating. For me, when my mentor didn’t come to my mother’s it felt like a slap in the face to my loss, like he didn’t care. Maybe he had other commitments or an emergency, but he could have called or written to tell me that. The bottom line is, if you are a supportive person you need to show up to the important milestones. A funeral/memorial service counts as one of those moments.
