The 'good old days' are now From the Editor

H

ave you ever found yourself thinking back about how great things used to be, perhaps in the 2000s, ’90s, or especially in the ’80? (That's when I was in my prime). Whatever season of life you are in, do your best to embrace it. For me that means finding joy in the present while reflecting fondly on the past.

It’s a tricky balance, but it is attainable.

Gratitude is the game changer for me. There are so many things I’m thankful for daily: for my family, home, dogs and even the little things like a hot cup of coffee in my favorite mug.

Life’s experiences have humbled me a million times over, shaping me into a wiser, gentler version of myself.

That’s something to celebrate. So I

may not do the things I loved years ago, but new things await.

This past weekend, I took in some festivals with my husband. Smithville’s Irish Festival was even bigger and better than I anticipated. We enjoyed the band, vendors and especially catching up with some friends.

Although the rainy Saturday pattern we seem to be stuck in has put a damper on some of our favorite activities, there’s still a plethora of great ones to choose from.

easide goldenrod pops out of the dunes along the coast, like bursts of sunshine.

Monarch butterflies glide between the golden flower clusters, fueling up for their migration south.

These are the unmistakable signs of fall at the Jersey Shore.

Goldenrod blooms from late August to November, and is an important late season food source for bees and butterflies. It grows to about three to four feet tall near the ocean, usually on the backside of the dunes.

Seaside goldenrod, and all the plants growing on the dune, are very important in keeping the dunes healthy and strong. They trap and hold sand as the wind blows it around, preserving, stabilizing and enlarging the dunes. This is important as the dunes are our first line of defense against storms and coastal flooding.

best to keep off the dunes and enjoy them from a distance. The seedheads remaining after the goldenrods are done flowering are enjoyed by the the birds.

Goldenrod is a vital plant to the Jersey Shore ecosystem but is often mistaken for ragweed. Unlike ragweed, it has heavy, sticky pollen that isn’t spread by wind. Goldenrod is not to blame for your allergies.

Goldenrod needs full sun, and grows well in sandy soil, or pure sand.

The flower clusters are composed of hundreds of tiny yellow flowers on the top of a tall stem. The fluffy-looking cluster of flowers is about two to five inches long. Most of the evergreen leaves are arranged around the base of the plant, with some alternately along the flower stem.

If you are thinking about a pollinator garden, goldenrod provides food for pollinators, shelter and nesting habitat for birds. Seaside goldenrod is one of the latest plants to bloom and is beautiful with late asters.

EHT couple provides free hayrides to local kids

n 2010, Pam and Ed Schuman were asked to create a kid-friendly hayride for a fall event at Fresh Start Church because they were known to have an elaborate Christmas display with lights synchronized to holiday music.

Since then, they’ve continued using the float to bring smiles to children all over Egg Harbor Township and some surrounding towns. Unlike typical hayrides, this one is modified from a parade float. Despite the spooky music and special effects, this attraction manages to be an alternative to more terrifying haunted hayrides.

“We started very primitively, and every year it's gotten bigger. We started taking it out to local neighborhoods and giving rides at our friends’ houses and now we have houses all

over EHT letting us come in and do hayrides at their houses,” said Pam Schuman, one of the owners.

For the month of October, the Schumans follow a schedule that they create earlier in the year from requests that usually start in August. They then bring what they call the “hauntless hayride” to those houses and neighbors. Friends and family can all board.

The couple has two different floats — a castle and a pirate ship — that they rotate from year to year.

Both are computer-controlled and decorated with the Halloween theme in mind while taking into account that the majority of their riders are 12 years old and under.

This year, they’re using the castle, which is decorated with lights that are synchronized to the Halloween music, smoke, strobe lights and fire that shoots out of the top with a natural flame generator.

The float sits on a 24-foot trailer with an extension on the back, which is pulled by a truck or tractor during parades and never goes above 25 mph.

It's built out of two-by-fours and lauan to keep it light and able to be disassembled quickly for weather and to store. The Schumans keep the float’s frames in the woods and sides in the shed.

“It's just fun for everybody. The people in the neighborhood that see it coming. If they didn't already know about it, they come out and they're like, ‘Oh my gosh, look how awesome this is,’” said Mike Everland, a friend who worked with the couple.

The hayride is free for those who

wish to ride. However, they ask those people to donate a bag of candy, if they can, so that they have some to give out to the kids during the Ocean City and Mays Landing Halloween Parades.

Last year they gave out 400 pounds of candy. This year, they’re looking at giving out about 700 pounds.

People who rode the float before are asked if they want to be on it for the parades and hand out candy.

“They're definitely doing this out of the goodness of their heart. A whole lot of their own time and money [goes into this] because they love to see the kids smiling,” said Everland.

A.C. Chamber foundation connects students to local job offerings

n Monday, members of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce arrived at Mainland Regional High School to present a check in the amount of $3,450. The money will go towards funding for the YouScience test, a program aimed at connecting students, educators, and area businesses. This cutting edge program enables students to explore

their areas of interest and guide them towards attaining career opportunities in Atlantic County.

In attendance for Monday’s check presentation was Michael Chait, President of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber, joined by board members Mitchell Zitomer, and John Heinz, in addition to members of the Mainland Board of Education.

Chait began reaching out to local school districts during the pandemic, with the idea to connect students to jobs and careers close to home.

“There are a lot of job openings that exist, that pay good salaries, that kids don’t know about.”

Mainland’s Director of School Counseling and Instruction Supervisor Nathan Lichtenwalner has been utilizing the YouScience program with his students over the last seven years. He says the program not only connects students to real-world job opportunities and experiences outside of school but enables students to stay in the Atlantic County region.

“It’s a win-win; the employers need us, but we also need them.”

While most schools utilize career interest surveys to gauge students’ potential career interest, the YouScience test goes beyond their interests through a series of brain exercises, aimed at discovering student’s natural interests and aptitude. The program will then connect students

According to Chait, Monday’s check presentation by Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce is not only a significant step to the organization’s commitment to local education and long-term workforce development, but enables educators to inspire and prepare students, while enabling them to broaden their hori-

zons. “It’s tremendous; you need the collaboration between educators and the business community to build the local talent pipeline.”

The Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce has recently established a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation aimed at expanding the program to additional schools in Atlantic County. espite predictions for a rainout, the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign was blessed with a dry day and mild temperatures as it hosted its 12th HERO Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023, on the Ocean City Boardwalk. Hundreds of supporters, along with families who have lost loved ones to drunk driving, participated in the walk-run event.

Thanks to hundreds of HERO Walk participants, whose registration fees added to the generous contributions of dozens of sponsors, tens of thousands of dollars were raised by the HERO Campaign on Sunday.

The HERO Campaign was established by the family of Navy Ensign John Elliott of Egg Harbor Twp., NJ, after he was killed in a collision with a drunk driver near Woodstown in July 2000, two months after he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was named the Outstanding HERO of his graduating class.

Just prior to the start of the Walk, a ceremony was held to recognize the top Walk teams, along with the event’s sponsors and volunteers. A

memory banner displayed pictures of numerous victims who have lost their lives to drunk driving tragedies.

This year’s event featured an unveiling of the new Stockton University HERO-wrapped patrol car, dedicated in memory of Stockton student Kevin Ade, who was killed in a collision with a drunk driver in 2007. The event also featured a display of a dozen HERO patrol cars from police departments throughout South Jersey, which serve as rolling billboards for the campaign as they are wrapped

with the HERO Campaign’s blue and yellow logo and safety message, “Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver.”

A tale of ghosts, ghouls and hauntings in South Jersey

he Jersey Shore is known for having family friendly towns with outstanding beaches, cities full of rich history and fun boardwalks. Yet, there is a scary, spooky side to our area, full of shadowy abandoned houses, creepy cemeteries and chilling legends. Seeing that Halloween is just a few weeks away, I’ve chosen to share some information on our local haunted legends.

How is a place deemed as being haunted? The history of the building or surrounding area is at the top of the list, followed by who lived there and how the house or land was used. “Spirits” may seek some form of justice or revenge or, perhaps, just wants someone to know of their presence. This is especially true on battlegrounds, cemeteries and old, long closed hospitals and prisons. There are countless legends attached to such places; tales of paranormal activities are shared such as unexplained cold spots, odd smells, creaking or slamming doors, flicker-

ing lights and sounds of footsteps in the dark.

There are a considerable amount of places that are described everywhere from Smithville to Cape May, all rich with history. Locally, there are several that stand out. South Jersey is known for the Pine Barrens, which encompasses 1.1 million acres of

preserved woodland over seven counties and known as the largest haunted area in all of the state. Within this endless forest are former mining settlements and mills, along with tails of numerous ghosts, and another Jersey-native creature.

Often referred to as the Leeds Devil, tales of the infamous Jersey

Devil go back as early as the 1700s. Legend has it he is the 13th son of Jane Leeds, and was born as a creature with hooves, wings and a forked tail. Many have reported spotting the creature in various locations throughout Atlantic County, most notably in the Pine Barrens.

Cape May is another town full of paranormal occurrences and sightings of numerous apparitions. The Cape received its name from the Dutch Captain Mey, who came upon the peninsula in 1620, a place where the Native American tribes sum-

mered. When the Quakers formed the community in 1688, the whaling industry began and more families relocated to the area. Victorian houses and hotels line the beach front streets along with many stories of hundreds of ghosts.

Just in time for Halloween, several local towns are currently offering nightly Ghost Tour walks, many telling tales of folklore and old haunts. You can join local author Scott Macom around the campfire as he shares spooky Jersey Devil tales from his book, “Devil Leeds.”

The event will begin at 7 p.m. on the grounds of the Somers Mansion in Somers Point. Bring your lawn chairs and sit around the campfire to hear the spooky tales.

Additionally the Hamilton Historical Society’s 23rd Annual Ghost Walk returns. Tour groups will be led by a Storyteller Guide, with local history and spooky stories through historic downtown Mays Landing. You can learn more and purchase tickets at hamiltonhistorical.org.

The worst-case scenario is to have a method of analysis where it is READY, FIRE, AIM. You are making the biggest investment of your life both personally and financially. You must get it right.

The first step is to research who your competition is. What are their strengths and weaknesses? How long have they been in business? Does it appear there are any new competitors who will be opening soon? What are

their price points? Will they have any advantages with their location? If yes, how are you going to overcome your disadvantage? There so many questions that must be answered before you move forward.

Remember the old adage about location, location, location. It still prevails.

If you must pay a little more to be in the right location and you can afford it, then do it. Otherwise, you may spend more money telling people where you are.

Nowadays your competition is not only brick and mortar; it’s also online – the invisible market.

Can and will your potential customers go online to find it for less? Your product or service must be unique for your target market.

Service is paramount. You must separate yourself from the competition.

Why is the consumer going to come to you? Know the answer before opening your doors.

Your next decision is whether you should lease or purchase space. This is an important consideration. When you purchase, it is a more permanent and costly process involving the down payment, closing costs and other expenses.

When you lease it is also a significant decision. When you sign an agreement, you agree to terms and conditions that will affect your life for a long time. It is important that you make the right decision. You might consider entering a shorter term agreement with renewal options.

It is prudent to have an exit strategy and be able to cut your losses if the business does not work out. I am not trying to scare you; everybody wants to succeed, and I hope you do, but it is important to know the potential pitfalls.

Once you have chosen the location that you feel is ideal, the internal decisions are the next part of the process.

Now it’s time to determine the right size for the retail or office space.

Calculate all of the fixed and variable costs so you can properly price your goods or services. Make sure you are accurate so that you will make a profit and not under or over price yourself.

This year will be my 40th year as a commercial real estate broker. I have seen people succeed beyond their wildest dreams. I have also seen people fail.

Preparation is a must. Even when you do all the proper analysis, it doesn’t always guarantee success. Another business might open after the fact and present a major challenge.

Brand yourself. Network locally.

Treat your customers like you want to be treated. Always, always, always be marketing.

TEDxCapeMay sparks curiosity and discovery discourse

dark auditorium is illuminated by a single spotlight over a red bubble. The audience is abuzz with anticipation, and iconic block letters on the far right hint at what’s to come.

The projector is ready, the speakers are prepared, and the show is about to begin.

“Welcome to the 11th year of TEDxCapeMay,” Norris Clark, the event organizer, announces. “There are two reasons people visit Cape May,” he continues. “They come for recreation, or shopping or swimming

at the beach. And they also come for RE-creation, meaning that their soul transforms into something new.”

Clark invites Michelle O’Donnell to stand, a longtime attendee of the TEDx series. When asked why she brought 18 guests, she responded, “It’s so amazing, and I wanted as many friends as possible to enjoy it.”

Long-time listeners of TED Talks appreciate the brief yet educational lectures given by experts in diverse fields. Established in 1984, TED was created to “discover and spread ideas that spark imagination, embrace possibility and catalyze impact.” The acronym stands for technology, entertainment, and design, but TED has covered thousands of other topics.

Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Stephen Hawking, Al Gore, James Cameron, Sarah Silverman, and Temple Grandin have all taken the stage for TED. Brene Brown, a shame and empathy researcher and lifestyle guru, found a platform through TED and has sold millions of books based on her presentations.

TEDx is an extension of TED that allows independent communities to host their own speaking events with their own speakers. These volunteer-driven events use the TED format and branding to fuel passion in localities and support grassroots self-actualization.

On Oct. 15, TEDxCapeMay’s theme was “Discoveries.” The program in-

cluded the following speakers: Max Strom, Tammi Van Hollander, Samuel Mann, Hazel Clark, Laura Baxter, Sirisha Kuchimanchi, Richard Vague, Anais Remili, and Derek Selinger. The show took place at the Cape May Convention Hall at 1:15 p.m.

Max Strom jump-started the event. The trauma and grief specialist traveled from the Netherlands to speak at TEDxCapeMay for the fourth time. This year, Strom challenged listeners to process grief communally and consider evolutionary contexts for surviving and thriving. “Almost three-quarters of this room has been trained in CPR, meaning that they know how to restart a heart. But none of us are trained on how to heal a broken heart,” he said.

In the second half of the event, Laura Baxter, a German opera singer, explained the power of voice. With the help of silly audio files and a song, Baxter illustrated how varied range, adding intention, and proper breathwork create more interest and trust.

Sirisha Kuchimanchi, a podcaster with a Fortune 200 resume, used anecdotes from her childhood in India to help parents teach their children about money. Former Pennsylvania Secretary of Banking & Securities Richard Vague highlighted the paradox of national debt through graphs and humor.

William Childers, a first-time audience member at TEDxCapeMay, told Shore Local News that his favorite session was Derek Selinger’s appeal to dreaming more like children. “It’s just so inspiring, and I can’t wait to ask my grandkids more about their lofty ambitions. Even in retirement, I can dream!”

Childers and his wife Tonya stayed at Congress Hall for the weekend and attended the lecture series on a whim, drawn in by the sign along the Promenade. They stayed for the reception and open bar after the final talk, and mingled with others for the rest of the evening. “We can’t wait for next year,” the couple said.

When “never again” isn’t long enough

personal note to my readers: I created the Six Words on a Boardwalk Bench column to create a “community billboard.” I’d like my six words to bring a new perspective to the table. This week was supposed to be my last column in the “Cutting College Costs” series. But the attacks on Israel were just too important for me to ignore.

When “never again” isn’t long enough.

We’ve all used the “never again” statement. It could be for something minor, like “I’ll never eat that much pie again.” It could also be for a more serious situation, such as being at the beach and taking your eyes off a young child just for a minute, and then finding them down by the water, all alone.

Every “never again” is experience-based.

Every “never again,” no matter how trivial or truly damaging, is based on your feelings of guilt or pain that came when you experienced something. But the most compelling, most life-changing resolutions come when we ourselves personally have to face up to the fact that some things are just too consequential to endure a second time. In those cases, it’s entirely possible that others will have no ability to comprehend our pain, fears, and resolve to adhere to our “never again” decisions.

Israel: The ultimate “never again” experience The modern, Democratic State of Israel was founded in 1948, after German Nazis systematically slaughtered more than six million Jews, using, among other techniques, poison gas in extermination camps in Europe. (If you do not know the history of Israel and Palestine, both founded in 1948, you owe it to yourself to discover it.)

After watching neighbors, parents, grandparents, and children sent off to the camps, and learning of the truly unbelievable barbaric plan to exterminate an entire religion, it is no wonder that the Jews vowed to

It’s a legacy that is passed on from one generation to another. But it is also the modern, lived experience of all Jews, especially those in Israel.

Holocaust survivors are still alive today.

We lived in Miami Beach from 1997-2007. One day, my wife Jeanne was at a bakery, when an older woman in front of her reached across the counter to pick up a loaf of bread.

Jeanne was shocked to see the tattooed numbers from a concentration camp on the woman’s arm. The camps were liberated in 1945. A child who was 10 at that time would be 88 today. This isn’t ancient history. Many

survivors are alive today.

But, if you are Jewish, you don’t need to have live people to remind you of the Holocaust. Your aunts, uncles, neighbors, and friends all have close relatives who lived (or were slaughtered) during those horrific times. Your resolve to “never again” personally witness the powerlessness and hopelessness of facing extermination from a brutal and entirely determined enemy are still today’s lived experiences. Certainly many people are still alive today who experienced the Yom Kippur War of 1973. On that occasion, Israel was unprepared, and completely surprised by the attacks by massive forces, bent on one thing – the destruction and killing of Jews. And now, almost exactly 50 years after the ’73 attacks, Hamas has launched over 5,000 missiles and sent thousands of terrorists in an attack that once again caught the Israelis by surprise. It was not an attack to recover territory, nor to redress grievances. It was an attempt to draw Israeli soldiers into attacking Gaza. It looks as if it is going to work.

This isn’t a war over territory.

Make no mistake about it. Hamas is not fighting for territory. They already have territory. This is a war to

exterminate a people, and the Jews have been through this before. Now they just want to make sure it is the last time – at least with this particular enemy. When terrorists took down the Towers of the World Trade Center, it wasn’t for territory. It was to strike a blow to the “Great Satan.” In the attacks on Saturday, Oct. 7, they didn’t do it to capture territory. They did it to terrorize civilians, and they did just that, with rape, kidnapping, torture, beheading, and a complete disregard for any moral conventions.

If Israel invades the Gaza Strip (I’m writing this column on Oct. 14) it won’t be to gain territory. It will be to eliminate an enemy that will never stop attacking Israelis – not for land, but to simply kill them. If Israel is able to destroy Hamas, the Israelis are not going to keep Gaza. They don’t want it. Even Egypt doesn’t want it. Instead, they want what they’ve always wanted – a safe place for Jewish people to live, with just one thought – “never again.” And this time, hopefully, they’ll get it.

Is this the last “never again”?

Israel is faced with a difficult choice. They can either heed the world’s pleas to stop attacking, or listen to their hearts and possibly put a permanent end to at least one “never again” situation, by destroying Hamas. I’m not in a position to

judge the Israelis. I don’t have the “never again” resolution they do. Israel had vowed to never let it happen again. It must be a terrible burden for the Israelis to bear because it did happen again.

My “never again” wish for all One final thing: I am not Jewish. I was raised Irish Catholic and heard stories of the cruelty of the British in Ireland.

But I never feared extermination. I never lived with serious discrimination. My “never again” resolutions do not involve the fears and anger born of powerlessness and the lived experiences of my community. I’m blessed to live in the United States.

I’m sympathetic to all people who suffer. Sometimes, we just have to do our best to imagine the horror and hopelessness of knowing that your very existence is the trigger for an enemy to attack you – not for land or money, but simply because they want you eliminated.

t might not be summer anymore, but sand castles can still be built.

After retiring in 2020 from being a high school math teacher for 33.5 years, Tom Jones, a Brigantine native, transferred his teaching skills to his passion for building sand castles.

“I pretty much entertain groups who want to go on the beach and play in the sand and build massive sand castles,” he said. Jones teaches families and groups of friends how to build extravagant sandcastles, but says it is more of a passion than a business to him.

During the summer of ‘93, Jones was sitting on the beach before he had to be at work to wait tables, at 3 p.m.

Look what I can do’ [and] took it from there,” he said.

After that beach day, Jones had a new hobby. His family often told him to turn it into a side hustle, and he always responded with, “Maybe.”

In 2007, he finally listened.

Jones took his teaching skills and applied them to his castle-making lessons.

He has a five-stage process that he walks his castle-makers through, using physics, science, geometry and algebra.

“I use the horizon. I use water and I

use the sand and get it all to just go together… It's all my skills all coming together,” Jones said.

Jones can accommodate pretty much everyone during any day of the week, at any beach, all year long. He has even traveled as far as Manasquan to instruct a family.

The entire group works together all day to create what he calls “a big, giant, finished, beautiful product.”

Although building a sand castle sounds easy, Jones said it’s definitely a workout, due to having to carry five-gallon buckets of water and dig in the sand.

Even if the family’s done and leaves to get dinner, Jones will stay to finish the castles, watch the sunset and take pictures.

The end product is a unique memory and an intricate sand castle that can be 6 feet tall or higher.

while they were rehearsing or sitting around their dressing room on the second floor of Tony Mart’s, they got a phone call. Levon took the call.

Dylan identified himself and asked Levon if he and the Hawks wanted to play with him at Carnegie Hall. Levon was perplexed and told the other guys sitting around that it was Bob Dylan.

“Who’s Bob Dylan?” Levon asked, and Richard leaned over and said, “Mr. Tambourine Man,” and Levon went back on the line and asked, “Who else is on the bill?”

“Just us,” Dylan replied, as Levon incredulously considered them selling out Carnegie Hall as something that just wasn’t possible.

But Dylan was serious, and talked Levon into coming to New York City to see him. Carmen Marotta calls it, “the most important phone call in the history of rock 'n' roll,” and nobody argues with him.

So the following Monday, Levon and Robbie Robertson drove up to New York City. Conway Twitty, who had business in New York City at the same time, may have accompanied them.

While Twitty was signing a new record contract with a country music label, the two Hawks visited Dylan at Grossman’s office where they introduced themselves to Mary Martin, the receptionist, who in turn introduced them to Dylan, sitting on the couch.

When Grossman came out of his office, they all sat down around a reel-to-reel tape recorder and when they were ready, he turned it on and played the new studio recording of “Like a Rolling Stone,” which Dylan had made a few days earlier. Levon and Robbie listened, and at the end of the song, they all sat back speechless

That they did, but there was a problem. They were under contract to play at Tony Mart’s until Labor Day. But Dylan said he needed them, and needed them now, as he was booked to play Forest Hills on Aug. 28, a little more than a week away. Impossible, they said, as Tony Marotta was a tough one, and they liked him like a father and couldn’t and wouldn’t break the contract with him.

Grossman spoke up for the first time saying, “We’ll double what they’re paying you for the week and we’ll contract you for the year, and pay you even if you don’t play.” And Levon looked at Robbie and they all were just dumbfounded.

“Well, we make all our decisions as a group. We’ll see what we can do about the Tony Mart’s gig and get back to you soon Mr. Dylan,” Levon said, shaking his hand.

The ride back down the Parkway was a quiet one; they kept the radio off and just thought about what was going down, what could go down and all of the various possibilities. If they went with Dylan, someone spoke said, was not like backing Ronnie Hawkins as Hawkins was stuck in the rut of the old Chitlin’ Circuit, while Dylan

Robbie Robertson and Levon was on his way up, playing arenas, not nightclubs and roadhouses. His song was No. 1 on the pop charts at that moment, and they just heard a new song that was going to go somewhere. They just felt they had to be a part of it and go along for the ride.

And doubling their salary was a nice incentive.

But how would they explain that to the rest of the band – Garth, Rick and Richard, and most of all Mr. Tony Mart, Anthony Marotta, who had taken them off the road, given them a steady job and made them feel at home?

After talking with Garth, Rick and Richard, Levon walked through the empty club, now just getting ready to open, and out the back door, and knocked on Tony’s office door. Sitting across from Tony in his office was a bit unnerving, especially given what Levon was about to tell Tony, and he got what he expected.

Tony got up from his chair shouting, “You want to leave me before the BIGGEST weekend of the SUMMER!” Levon sat back in his chair, as Tony’s voice shifted and went from deep, dark and husky to a softer tone, and the acknowledgment that, “but it’s a good opportunity for you boys.”

If it was anyone else he would have called them bums, but the Hawks had been good to him, so he sat down again and picked up the phone and said, “If Colonel Kudlets has a band that can fill your shoes for Labor Day weekend you can walk, you can go dance with Dylan, but Kudlets has to come through.”

And Kudlets did come through with a band that was acceptable to Tony – Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, whose hit, “Devil With The Blue Dress,” was on the charts. Then Tony did what he seldom does. He would throw a farewell party for the Hawks, something he had only done once previously, for Len Carey and the Crackerjacks. Since Conway’s birthday was coming up soon and he was leaving, too, the farewell party was going to be a double whammy – goodbye, so long, farewell to both Conway Twitty and the Hawks, and a fine Somers Point send-off party was in the works.

While Dylan was plugging in and going from folk to rock 'n' roll with the Hawks, Twitty was leaving rock 'n' roll and going country, in opposite directions, but everybody was happy. And now Tony needed to get yet another band to play the third stage, and was thinking about Joe and the Nomads, who were due back for their second try out later that night.

Five Reasons to head to Halloween Fest at the Ocean City Library 1. Stories

hese days, it almost seems like Halloween is more for adults than it is for kids — we’ve figured out a way to make our cocktails festive, our home décor glamorously ghoulish, and don’t even get me started on how scary a walking haunted attraction can be.

But there’s still plenty for the kids!

Besides the traditional trick-or-treating and pumpkin carving, there’s a pretty spook-tacular Halloween Fest from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Ocean City Free Public Library.

The open house-style event features multiple stations for kids of all ages.

Wear your favorite costume (not required) and head on over. Here are five reasons to make this one of your new family traditions.

5. Trick-ortreating

If you’ve ever taken your child to story-time at the library, you know that librarians are the bee’s knees when it comes to keeping kids engaged with their storytelling prowess. Whether they’re using different voices, including a hands-on element to their stories or simply reading some of the best seasonal and age-appropriate books available, Halloween Fest story-time is a can’t-miss part of the night.

No Halloween-themed event is complete without some form of trickor-treating. Fortunately, the Ocean City Free Public Library has you covered. Each station has plenty of candy and non-edible items like bookmarks and bracelets so kids can trick-or-treat their way through the library.

2. Games

Another station available at Halloween Fest is the game station, and it’s full of fa-boo-lous fun. Families can expect a decorated space in the Kids Activity Room with entertaining activities and plenty of prizes, including — but not limited to — candy.

3. Dry Ice Station

For the first time at Halloween Fest, there will be a demonstration station featuring the magical effects

of science! Hosted by Talewise, the dry ice demonstration is fun and factual, teaching kids about frozen carbon dioxide.

4. Take-homes

Kids won’t leave empty-handed at Halloween Fest. Every child — and there are often hundreds — is invited to create two-dimensional wooden pumpkins they can decorate and bring home. Before they leave, each child gets a free book and a small pumpkin. It’s almost like Christmas!

South Jersey catches Phillies fever

hillies fever has stretched all the way to Cape May. The entire community is caught up in the Phils' quest to reach the World Series for a second straight year, so much so that the City of Cape May showed Tuesday's Game 2 of the NLCS against Arizona on a giant screen on the beach adjacent to Convention Hall.

Hundreds of fans donned "Red October" sweatshirts and huddled under blankets to see the Phils take on the Diamondbacks.

Most importantly, it was free. It didn't cost the $1,500 or so - approximately $330 per ticket via StubHub, plus parking and the trips to the team store and concession stands - I would have had to shell out to take my son and his two oldest sons to Citizens Bank Park Tuesday.

Problem was, H a m p to n (7), Graham (5) and younger brother Nixon (almost 2) didn't get a chance to watch the first two games of the NLCS. First pitch was around 8 p.m., which is just about the time they go to bed on a school night.

It was a shame because they are huge Phillies fans.

Hampton, who is in second grade, eagerly awaited the arrival of his "Schwarbomb" T-shirt. Graham (5) couldn't wait to show off his shirt depicting a Phillies batting helmet filled with ice cream and whipped cream to his kindergarten classmates.

Their little brother Nixon, who turns two in three weeks, spent the past week imitating Bryce Harper.

He would put on Hampton's t-ball batting helmet (backwards), swing an imaginary bat, then sprint around the living room while yelling "Harper Home Run!" before diving across the living room. Then he informed Poppy and Mimi that he was getting a "Nat-

The Phillies' playoff run helped ease the pain of last Sunday's Eagles loss to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium, a 20-14 defeat that ended their fivegame winning streak to start the year.

The good news was they didn't lose any

A year later, fifth-grade teachers Mr. Haynie and Mrs. McGonigle gathered their students to watch pitchers Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, catcher Jerry Grote and centerfielder Tommy Agee give the "Miracle" Mets their first World Series championship by beating Orioles lefty Mike Cuellar, first baseman Boog Powell and third baseman Brooks Robinson in five games.

Sadly, weekday early afternoon playoff games are a thing of the past, though Hampton, Graham and Nixon will get a few opportunities to wear their T-shirts. Thursday's Game 3 and Friday's Game 6 (If necessary) are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.

It figures to be an entertaining series between two wild-card teams who had little trouble knocking off higher-seeded opponents in the NLDS. The Phils took out the 104-win Atlanta Braves in four games after eliminating the Marlins in two, while the Diamondbacks swept the Dodgers after also sweeping the Brewers.

Count on it going seven games, with Game 7 set for Citizens Bank Park on next Tuesday.

hat a month October is turning out to be, with the Phillies on the verge of returning to the World Series and the Eagles starting out 5-0 (until losing to the New York Jets on Sunday). There’s so many Oktoberfest events happening

all over the Jersey Shore…and did we mention Halloween is right around the corner?

Autumn is lots of fun at the Jersey Shore, with a variety of music events to choose from weekly. What follows are a few curated events to select from this weekend.

weekend’s three-day Elephant Talk Indie Music Festival at the Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall. We attended Friday night and caught great sets by rock group Matchaponix (terrific female lead vocalist Keely), rocker/spoken word artist Erin Incoherent, hard rockin’ trio Famous and Fallen (from Delaware County, Pa. and proud of it), and longtime rock accordionist/ vocalist Malcolm Tent (with adam12), who never fails to entertain (P.S. Catch Tent live at Anchor Rock Club Oct. 25). All the weekend’s proceeds benefited Hearts Therapeutic Riding Center in Egg Harbor Township, which offers therapeutic horse-riding lessons for people of all ages with physical, mental and emotional challenges. Job well done.

Pure Petty/Hard Rock Hotel & Casino: The Philly area sextet brings the music of the late, great rocker Tom Petty to life. “It’s a true honor for us to be able to celebrate the music and life of Tom Petty on his birthday at Hard Rock Café,” PP front-person Jimmy Mannix told us. “After all, where better to celebrate the life and music of an immortal musician than at a property that is synonymous with rock and roll?”

Mannix adds. “Our two sets will feature both his many signature songs and less-familiar tracks. There may even be a cover or two of other artists’ songs that Tom and The Heartbreakers did in concert through the decades. As always, we’ll do some material Tom performed with Stevie Nicks, as we have our own ‘Stevie.’

All the songs are performed with the unequaled attention to detail and authenticity that causes people at our shows to regularly say to band members, ‘I closed my eyes, and it was like I was at a Petty concert’.”

DistroFest2/ACX1 Studios: Taking place on the site of the former Playground Pier on the AC Boardwalk, where ACX1 Studios recently opened, this two-day music festival and conference presented by Who? Magazine will feature over more than 60 music acts in all genres of music including rock, R&B, hip hop, Latin, pop, and EDM. They will also celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip hop with performances by wellknown artists including Just Ice, The Force MDs and The Intruders, as well as sets by newer pop-leaning artists including Camille K, and rock groups (Sharon Lia Band and others). Five things to try at Gregory’s Oktoberfest

regory’s has made a lot of headlines recently with their trademark hold on “Taco Tuesday,” but there’s another Gregory’s tradition that should be on the forefront of your mind this time of year — it’s their 44th Annual Oktoberfest Celebration, and it’s absolutely delicious. Not sure what an Oktoberfest menu entails?

Let us do the honors. Here are five things you absolutely must try on the Oktoberfest menu, available Fridays through Mondays through October.

1. Okto-bier-sampling Before the food is even out of the kitchen, Oktoberfest guests should be taking the opportunity to sample some German beers.

The hybrid Brit-Yank arena-rock outfit, whose jukebox-full of signatures include “Cold As Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” “I Want To Know What Love Is” and “Waiting For A Girl Like You” is currently on its swan-song road trip—dubbed the “Feels Like the Last Time” tour, a play on the title of one of the group’s most popular tunes. The cross-country march brings the unit to the Etess Arena at

The logical assumption would be that the rigors of touring have become too much for 78-year-old Mick Jones, the band’s guiding light since its 1976 debut (and sole remaining original member). But according to keyboard player Michael Bluestein, it’s a younger member on whom performing has taken its toll.

“Actually, a lot of it is coming from our lead singer, Kelly Hansen,” noted Bluestein during a recent phone chat.

“He's been with the band close to 20 years now; in his own words, these songs are just really challenging for a high-tenor singer like him. The songs are way up there range- wise, and he's been doing it for a while. He's in his early-sixties now, and frankly, he's still doing a fantastic job. But, there's a sense that that won't go on forever, and the desire to kind of go out on top, and go out while he's still doing it well…that's really where a lot of it's coming from.”

But bands don’t necessarily call it quits when a member leaves. Foreigner certainly didn’t when original lead singer Lou Gramm—who as much as anyone was responsible for the unit’s sonic thumbprint—left the fold in 1990 (only to return in ’92 and split again in 2003).

“I'm sure that’s been discussed in the upper levels of management, but I don’t have any insight into that as of now,” he said. “My understanding is that it's wrapping up, this chapter is wrapping up, certainly as far as Kelly fronting the band is concerned.”

Interestingly, Bluestein, who joined Foreigner in 2008, left open the possibility of future gigs. “I don't think that [Jones] is necessarily permanently shutting the faucet off,” he offered, adding that any future performances “would be substantially less, and just sort of special, engagements here and there.”

Although he was primarily a jazz musician in his earlier days (including his time at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music), Bluestein has also lent his talents to a number of pop and rock artists including Anastacia, Boz Scaggs and Stevie Nicks. He was also part of ABC latenight host Jimmy Kimmel’s studio band. But his current gig may be the most meaningful to him, considering there was a time he couldn’t be sure he’d still be alive in 2023, much less a part of a major rock group.

In May 2012, the then-43-yearold Bluestein was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. However, he recalled, “The doctors told me pretty early on that it wasn't gonna be easy, but that it wasn't a death sentence, that it was treatable. But you know, you never know if things are gonna go right; it can spread, of course.

And then once you do the surgeries and everything, they test, they gotta do scans and see if there's any recurrence of it, or if it showed up anywhere else.

“I was obviously thrilled and grateful that they got it all and, all these years later I’m good to go.”

Il Verdi reboot is superior

A few months ago, my esteemed Shore Local News colleague and pal Scott Cronick gave you the lowdown on the new version of Il Verdi, the decades-old Italian eatery at Tropicana Atlantic City. But having finally had the chance to dine there a couple weeks ago, I would be remiss if I didn’t reaffirm how wonderful it is.

The interior redesign has, at least to these (admittedly aging) eyes, been extensive enough to make it seem like a significantly different space than it was through its many previous incarnations (including, most recently, the South American-focused Olon from “Iron Chef” Jose Garces). But it’s the kitchen where the changes are most

notable.

In its previous (much-smaller) location, Il Verdi, while certainly upscale and elegant, pretty much was about traditional Italian dishes. But under the impressive direction of Chef Michael Buckley, the fare has definitely taken several sizeable steps forward.

While traditional items like veal and chicken parmesan are still on the bill of fare, the menu also features more contemporary takes on seafood, fowl, pork and beef (although not a steakhouse, you definitely can’t go wrong with their steak offerings).

Il Verdi—which, with the closing of Nero’s Italian Steakhouse at Caesars in September 2022, ranks as AyCee’s second-oldest casino restaurant (the

A Riesling to believe

he timing of grape harvest, or “vendange” in French, varies by region and varietal. Riesling is among the earliest varietals to be harvested

and is often believed (incorrectly) to produce only sweet white wines. The origins of this belief go back to the 1960s when many wines made from the riesling grape were mass-produced and intentionally made to be sweet. For those of you who were around then, you may recall a wildly popular style of German wine called Liebfraumilch (“maiden’s milk”). Blue Nun was one of the more famous Liebfraumilch wines. Riesling was the most recognized varietal in this white wine blend; thus, the sweet drink became what many believed to

be representative of a riesling wine.

Although popular, this was not what most wine drinkers were looking for in a white wine, so they moved on to other varietals without a second thought to riesling. I’m here to tell you that riesling can produce excellent white wine. Let’s take a deeper dive into this noble grape.

Viticultural research leads us to two potential birthplaces of riesling: the Rhine River regions of Germany or the Alsace region of France. The Alsace region is in the far northeastern area of France very close to the Alps and Germany. The earliest documentation of riesling is believed to be from the 1400s, in which records reference a grape varietal called Rießlingen. The origin of riesling is an ancient French grape named Gouais Blanc. This grape was quite prolific and is believed to be the grandmother of chardonnay, petit verdot, chenin blanc, muscadelle, and gamay. Riesling grapes continue to be grown and produced into outstanding wine in locations such as the Mosel region of Germany, the Alsace region in France, and the Finger Lake region of New York State.

So, is riesling just for lovers of sweet wine? Absolutely not!

High-quality rieslings are produced in a wider range of sweetness and dryness than most any other varietal.

Juice squeezed from virtually all wine grapes is naturally sweet. What our palate detects as sweet has to do with residual sugar. Winemakers attempt to allow grapes to stay on the vine as long as possible to maximize that sugar. In fermentation, yeast consumes the sugar and converts it into alcohol and carbon dioxide, turning the grape juice into wine. Residual Sugar (RS) is the natural sugar that remains in the wine after the fermentation process.

The level of sugar remaining varies based on many factors, including the length of fermentation and the initial sugar level of the juice. Wines

are identified as “sweet” if the RS is above 120 grams per liter, or 12% RS. “Semi-sweet” wines have between 35 and 120 g/L, or 3.5% to 12% RS. Wines with between 17 and 35 g/L (1.7% to 3.5% RS) are called “off-dry.”

The majority of what we call “dry” wines fall between 0.6 and 17 g/L (.006% to 1.7% RS), while the driest wines, referred to as “bone dry,” have virtually no RS, between 0 and 0.6 g/L. Rieslings can be found in many of these classifications.

If your interest is now piqued, allow me to offer a few riesling recommendations. For those who prefer sweeter wines, Schmitt Söhne, from Mosel Germany, produces some very nice semi-sweet rieslings. Try the Schmitt Söhne Riesling Auslese for one with a fuller body and more intense flavor than many rieslings.

The flavors are apricot, nectarine and honey. The residual sugar is 5.5%, placing this wine clearly in the semisweet range. Additionally, the acidity is high, making for a crisp and fresh wine to enjoy.

For those looking for a dry riesling, Pierre Sparr vineyards in Alsace, France makes a fantastic option that I am confident dry-wine lovers will enjoy. The Sparr Estate and Vineyards dates back to the 1680s. Pierre Sparr, the current vineyard owner and operator, took on operations at the young age of 20. Try the Sparr Alsace Riesling for a sophisticated and refined representation of the region’s terroir. Although the aroma is floral and sweet, the flavor is focused on the minerality with only notes of the fruit. This wine is very dry with an RS of about 0.6%.

Or, try the Schlosskellerei Gobelsburg Kamptal Riesling 2021 for a classic dry riesling. Schloss Gobelsburg has been in operation for over 850 years and is the oldest winery estate in the Kamptal wine region along the Danube River. With an RS of less than 0.006% and an extremely high level

of acidity, the Kamptal Riesling 2021 is sure to appeal to dry-wine lovers.

The fruit flavor is green apple and pear with a hint of citrus and honey.

The price is quite reasonable for such a wonderful wine.

If you’d prefer to look closer to home, there are many wineries in the Finger Lakes region of New York that produce good rieslings. Recently, Paul Hobbs, the world-renowned winemaker known for his California wines and his joint ventures in Argentina and Spain, planted vines along Seneca

Lake to begin wine production in the Finger Lakes. He named the vineyard Hillick and Hobbs, after his parents.

Hillick was his mother’s maiden name.

Hobbs follows old-world tradition and truly understands terroir. He chose to grow only one varietal in pursuit of producing the best quality wine that Finger Lakes’ terroir can provide: riesling! His grapes are hand-harvested and sorted, and then fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. His Seneca Lake Dry Riesling has an RS of less than 0.5% and has excellent minerality from the blue slate and glacial shale soil of the land. The aroma is lightly floral; the flavor is stone fruit with a well-balanced acidity and long-lasting finish. Treat yourself to this wonderful wine.

Something Sinister is happening at Showboat this Halloween season

n the 30 or so years that I have been living here at the shore, Atlantic City – for whatever reason – has never had a consistent horror experience.

Showboat Hotel and Abracadabra are hoping to change that.

Horror buffs like me – I literally watch a horror movie a day during October and have traveled haunted houses around the nation with my wife – will be delighted to check out Sinister Asylum, a new haunted attraction inside Showboat Thursdays through Sundays through Oct. 29, that its organizers hope becomes that annual attraction Atlantic City has been missing for decades.

“We are pumped to be here,” said Albie Manzo, an event producer who

teamed with Abracadabra, a well-known Halloween store in New York City, to bring Sinister Asylum to Showboat.

“It’s awesome, and people are excited about it. We partnered with Atlantic City Theater Company for some great actors, and for our first activation here, we couldn’t be happier so far. I definitely think there is an opportunity here.”

A haunted trek

Those familiar with Showboat when it was a casino will recognize Sinister Asylum’s home: Scarduzio’s, a fantastic former steakhouse and sushi joint that has been transformed into a house of horrors.

“Scarduzio’s was perfect for us,” Manzo said. “Everything is in such great shape in there, and then we retrofit it to make it the asylum we needed. The Abracadabra guys just went over the top with the design and the animatronics. It has a real movie set feel to it. And in the activation, you really feel like you are some-

where else. And we plan to evolve it so people keep coming back. We really couldn’t have asked for a much better setup.”

On your journey through this restaurant that has been transformed into an asylum, you will encounter fallen angels, maniac nurses, demented doctors, unhinged patients, masked freaks, a pig-faced chainsaw monster, a smorgasbord of decapitated humans presented in front of the former sushi counter, an executioner jester and plenty of cool animatronics

and actors trying to scare the bejesus out of you.

It's creepy, gory and fun, just like any haunt should be.

But Sinister Asylum is different in a major way. Usually, photographs are strictly prohibited inside any haunted attraction wherever you go.

But at Sinister Asylum, guests are encouraged to take photos – and even selfies – with the actors who are terrorizing you, which means you can walk away with some very cool pictures this Halloween season.

“It’s an immersive experience more than anything,” Manzo said.

“You are in there and having fun. It’s about engaging people in a different way and being open minded about the substantial family-oriented approach that Showboat has taken here with the waterpark and the arcade and other stuff here, so we want to be inclusive of that as well. From a creative standpoint, we wanted to

In most places, you go through these and in a blink of an eye, it’s over. Here, you can interact with them in a fun environment. I tell everyone they can take their time in there and take pictures.

But, even though we do all of that, it’s still a great, scary experience, so the majority of people run out of there.”

For those out there who are a little timid, don’t fret: No one will touch you!

“It’s not an intense experience with actors touching you, and you

are not allowed to touch the actors,” Manzo said. “Not everyone is into that. No one is going to tie you up and douse you with water. It’s scary, but we don’t want to break the snakes out just yet.”

Abracadabra, it’s a haunted house!

For those who think Abracadabra sounds familiar, it should be.

Its flagship store on West 21st Street in New York City is famous for not only being one of the most wellknown places on the planet to get everything from costumes to props to yard decorations, but it was recently the space where scenes from

the demented Art the Clown flick “Terrorizer 2” were filmed.

According to Fox 59, “The bloody dismemberment of a Halloween store cashier in one scene (followed by a scene of Art posing with the severed head among animatronic clowns to fool window shoppers) introduced audiences to Abracadabra NYC, a real-life,

multi-level costume superstore,” the network wrote on its website. “It was used as both a shoot location and a setting for several scenes, which prompted fans to seek it out upon learning it was a real place. Since then, the iconic store has become an unofficial tourist attraction for horror enthusiasts; an association that’s been fully embraced by the staff.”

“It’s the kind of place that when you go there this Halloween season, there is a line around the block,” Manzo said. “We met doing things together in Asbury Park, but this is the first event where we are working together at Showboat, and hopefully that will be a long, fruitful relationship. They are an unbelievable partner. The first haunted house I ever went through, I was part of, so I am not someone who was into this world before all of this when it came to horror films and all that. But now got bit by the horror bug after seeing how the Abracadabra guys are so into it. It’s contagious.

When you see these props, they aren’t things you find lying around.

They are movie-quality stuff that’s here, and all of it intersects with the actors. It’s a great experience.”

The future?

Manzo said he hopes the first edition of Sinister Asylum is just the beginning. And they will even keep improving the space this season.

“We have a great speakeasy at the

end of the experience, and we are installing two-way mirrors where you can’t see out, but those sitting at the speakeasy will be able to see people being scared,” Manzo said.

“That’s going to be awesome. And ideas like those are what we will keep bringing to the table.”

If the lines at 5 p.m. on a Saturday three weeks before Halloween are any indication, Sinister Asylum may have found a permanent home.

“I’m a New Jersey guy, and Atlantic City is a place close to my heart, so hopefully this will be a long relationship,” Manzo said. “Next year, we are already talking about how we make it bigger and better. This is not just about walking around a Halloween store. We have to transport you to somewhere different and awesome, and I think we did a great job at that, and it will keep getting better and better.”

Frank Sinatra’s love affair with Atlantic City

M

usically, the year 1950 was noteworthy for artists like Red Foley, Frankie Laine, Patti Page, Teresa Brewer, The Ames Brothers and Perry Como.

Among the biggest hits of that year were now-forgettable novelties such as Frankie Laine’s “Mule Train,” Como’s “Hoop-Dee-Doo,” Brewer’s “Music, Music, Music;” and The Ames Brothers’ “Rag Mop.” Conspicuously missing from the pop charts of 1950 was Frank Sinatra.

It was not a great year personally or professionally for an artist who was among the most wildly popular in music history just a few years before. His movies were no longer hits. The press was in an uproar over his courting of Ava Gardner. His CBS television show, broadcast opposite the gigantic “Texaco Star Theater” starring Milton Berle, was going nowhere and his stint on radio’s “Your Hit Parade” had ended a year earlier.

Personal appearances were sparsely attended, and most significantly, his Columbia records were no longer selling.

Stylistically, his plaintive crooning

was no longer in vogue as the once fashionable bobby soxers, a substantial part of his audience in the 1940s, had grown up. And record producers like Columbia’s Mitch Miller were spoon-feeding the American public ridiculous novelties like “Come-OnA-My-House” and “How Much is That Doggie in the Window?” Miller tried to foist this nonsense on Sinatra and Sinatra gamely tried. But his heart just wasn’t in it and the record-buying public knew it.

Vocally, he was maturing, but his record company producers were not maturing along with him. It was messy and it was sad, as the artist who had been on top of the world was now caught in some kind of stylistic time warp.

As bad as 1950 may have been, the seeds of a career upswing – musically, anyway – were planted in that year with the release of “Sing and Dance with Frank Sinatra.” The LP was a departure from the ballads Sinatra had been known for. Though his career may have been heading downward, Sinatra still had his supporters and his fans. Two of those fans, Paul “Skinny” D’Amato and George Hamid, lived and worked in Atlantic City.

In a town known for its colorful characters, D’Amato was an icon. Alleged to have ties to organized crime, he owned The 500 Club – the notorious nightclub at 6 Missouri Ave., since 1942 when he and partner Irvin Wolf purchased it from Phillip Barr.

Barr had been using the venue as a horse betting parlor during the day and a nightclub during the evening.

D’Amato and Wolf turned it into a bonafide nightspot, open from 5 p.m. until 10 a.m. It was not a secret that until the early 1950s, it had roulette wheels, craps tables, baccarat and high-stakes card games in the rear of the club. Some say there was more gambling in Atlantic City than what arrived with legalization in 1978.

But what put the club on the map, and what enabled The 500 Club to attract top talent, was the breakthrough appearance of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis in 1946. Although the story has many versions, what is agreed upon is that Jerry was booked at The 500 Club as a single and was bombing. And Jerry knew it. As a

In an interview he did with broadcaster Ben Heller at the Pier on WMID Radio, it’s quite clear that Sinatra was in excellent spirits.

After his 500 Club appearances in 1964, Sinatra would not appear in Atlantic City until October of 1978, when he performed a concert at Convention Hall to raise funds for the Atlantic City Medical Center. He went on to play Resorts, the original Golden Nugget on the Boardwalk, and did his final shows in 1994 at the Sands Hotel and Casino.

It’s been said that Frank Sinatra had a lifelong love affair with Atlantic City. Though in later years he continued to appear in Atlantic City at Resorts, the Golden Nugget, and the Sands, nothing demonstrated the love that Atlantic City had for Frank Sinatra better than that Labor Day Weekend at the Steel Pier. Free events for kids:

1. Make Halloween Rock Magnets Visit the Absecon branch of the Atlantic County Library System on Thursday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. Kids ages 5-12 are invited to make a spooky magnet for the season. All materials are provided by the library. Children under age 9 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is required. After their performance, stick around for a live animal presentation. There will also be special Halloween enrichment activities for animals at the zoo.

5. Ocean City Halloween Costume Skate 2023 Head to the Ocean City Skate Park on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 4 p.m. to dusk for a Halloween-themed skate session. There will be a costume contest, a best trick contest and candy! If you don’t skate, spectators can watch on the bleachers at the side of

What is Direct Indexing?

hot topic in the world of investing lately is direct indexing. Direct indexing is when instead of buying an index fund or ETF, you purchase the actual underlying stocks that make up the index itself. There are a variety of reasons why an investor might want to build a portfolio this way. This week let’s explore how it works and what the potential benefits of direct investments could be.

1. Tax efficiency is certainly a potential benefit of direct investing. If you hold the underlying stocks directly, you can choose both the amount and timing of any capital gains distributions. You could also manage those potential gains by realizing potential offsetting losses which could minimize you taxes in a given year.

2. Reducing risk could also be a potential benefit of direct indexing.

Sometimes there is a particular sector that is performing poorly over a given time period.

Direct indexing allows you to avoid or sell out of that sector within the portfolio which you couldn’t otherwise do with a mutual fund or ETF. You could also skew the portfolio to those stocks within the index that have a lower-than-average Beta which is defined as the volatility of a stock relative to the market. 1 is the market’s beta, so any number lower than 1 would imply less risk than the broader market. Note, this does not mean that it will necessarily perform better.

3. Environmental, social, and governance or ESG investing*. ESG investing has become another huge topic in the investment world and concerns investing in companies whose focus is on socially responsible investing. While there is a great

debate over the pros and cons of ESG investing, direct indexing makes it much easier for you to include or exclude companies whose values do or don’t align with your own.

So, who is direct indexing a fit for.

For starters, creating your own index can be very expensive to replicate due to the cost of each stock in the index.

It is far cheaper to buy a fund or EFT than it is to recreate it yourself. This is why it is typically done by investors with larger non-IRA portfolios. So, the first negative to me would be, 1. Costs to recreate the index. It is potentially very expensive to recreate an index with individual stocks.

2. Management of the portfolio. The benefit of direct indexing is that you get to pick and choose the stocks in the portfolio. This, however, is not a benefit to everyone. Knowing what stocks to buy, hold, and sell along with when to do make those trades is most often best left to professionals unless you are willing to do an awful lot of research on many different companies and continuously monitor them all on an ongoing basis

as well.

While clearly not for everyone, direct indexing might be a consideration with many potential benefits for larger investors seeking to potentially reduce taxes and have more control over their portfolios. *Be aware that there are not yet universally recognized standards for ethical investing and the categories of investing contained under that umbrella. If you are committed to using your money in a way that reflects your values, it is incumbent on you to do your homework and make sure the companies you’re investing in stand up to what it claims to be. Managing dogs on Halloween

or dogs, Halloween must seem like they have entered a parallel universe. Crazy blow-up decorations, people wearing strange costumes and masks, and a stream of strangers coming to the front door asking for candy can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to make Halloween festivities easier on your dog.

For starters, you care more about your dog wearing a costume than your dog does. Before dressing your dog up, consider your dog's temperament and if they will be comfortable wearing a costume. Try doing a test run of your chosen costume before taking your dog trick-or-treating.

Make sure to have plenty of treats on hand to make wearing the costume a pleasant and rewarding experience.

Check that their vision, breathing, and movement are not obstructed. If

your costume of choice stresses your dog out, ditch it and opt for a seasonal bandana or collar.

If your dog or puppy gets overwhelmed with just one person coming over to visit, imagine how stressful a Halloween party or line of trick-or-treaters will be for them. If you are hosting a Halloween party make sure you think about how your dog will handle having free access to a table stocked full of treats and candy. Certain candy additives like xylitol are toxic to dogs so make sure if your dog is a counter surfer that they are going to be closely supervised or put them away with a bone to chew on while the party goes on. If your guests' costumes will freak your dog out, it is safer for everyone involved for your dog to be put away for the night.

If the doorbell ringing normally sends your dog into hysterics, imagine how hard it will be on them to handle a steady stream of excited children in costumes yelling trick or treat. Consider the real possibility of your dog bolting out of the door when opened and jumping on people or worse running away. If there is any chance of

reetings from the Pacific Coast! While my husband and I have been enjoying the beautiful beaches, mountains, and canyons of the California coast to attend a wedding, I thought I would bring our readers along for a peek at the amazing flora of the West Coast.

In a climate of warm, dry summers and cooler, wet winters, Mediterranean gardens are the norm, and drought-resistant plants thrive. Succulents and flowers that barely survive or succumb to our cold winters in Southern New Jersey grow to amazing sizes along the coast of California.

Like the Jersey Shore, proximity to the ocean keeps temperatures moderate. But in the California gardening zones of 9 and 10, tropical and subtropical plants abound, and what we consider annuals in New Jersey can

Though it’s a native of Central and South America, you can find bougainvilleas sprawling in California, Texas, Florida, and Arizona. What we perceive as the vibrant “flowers” are actually paper-like leaves called bracts that thrive in the sun with very little water. Because of the papery appearance of these bracts, bougainvillea is also called paper flower. While it cannot handle the cold in our area, you can bring bougainvillea indoors as a potted plant to overwinter in a sunny window.

You may recognize the thick, fleshy, oval leaves of the houseplant jade. But in California this plant can grow four feet high outdoors as an attractive shrub; some varieties will grow even taller. In late winter and early spring in California, they can bloom with loads of starry white flowers. Back in South Jersey, grow as a houseplant in a sunny window and water sparingly. lent/cactus mix since potting soil can hold unneeded moisture.

Gigantic aloes grow with abandon in Southern California. Depending on the variety, their spiny leaves take on different sizes, shapes, and colors. One type, called candelabra aloe, grows vibrant red torch-like flowers. This flowering succulent attracts birds, bees, and butterflies.

Candelabra is a heat-loving succulent that prefers temperatures between 68°’and 100°.

Palm trees and banana plants set the Southern California vibe. The Canary Island date palm reaches heights of 40-60 feet, and graces many yards in Southern California.

It’s often called a pineapple palm due to its pineapple-like appearance when young. Though this type of palm does produce fruit, it’s not said to be very tasty. Banana trees also set the tropical mood. Unlike most of the drought-tolerant plants growing in Southern California, bananas need moist soil in the summer months to thrive and fruit. In winter they will be practically dormant. Did you know that you can also grow banana trees in South Jersey? Musa bajoo is the most cold-tolerant banana plant. Gardeners recommend covering them with burlap in winter for the first two years. Though they won’t produce bananas to eat, you can enjoy a New Jersey tropical “staycation” with these hardy banana plants.

Dudleyas are another group of succulents growing along California’s coasts and rocky habitats. But I prefer their other name, liveforevers, in the stonecrop family. One of the varieties we found is called giant chalk dudleya. This variety grows in rosettes and produces reddish-brown flowers that are pollinated by hummingbirds and bees. The leaves are covered in a white chalky, dusty, waxy film that creates a surface of high ultraviolet reflectivity. Once mature, they are fairly cold and heat-tolerant. In recent

years, California passed a new law protecting dudleyas from rampant poaching that has threatened the plants.

Of course, giant cacti, agaves, and aloe also fill the cliff sides of the California coast. Beautiful flowering plants such as hibiscus, lantana, plumbago, and oleander grow lush and almost wild in California while we on the East Coast baby them to grow as annuals in the summer. Citrus trees are heavy-laden with fruit while homeowners seem oblivious to their bounty.

But while the clear water is breathtakingly picturesque, the water is also freezing cold and the waves will thrash you with their force. Traditionally, the Sheriff’s Cup included hand gun, shot gun, and patrol rifle contests. This year, in Captain Jones’s honor, the entire competition features steel plates, and in the future, we’ll include one steel plate challenge in the competition as a lasting tribute to him.”

“I think he liked the steel because it was more difficult,” says Abby Jones of her late husband. “Over the years he bought many steel targets.

He would shoot with his friends every Sunday and bring it out. He would also design the stages that they would do. He just loved shooting and helping others with their shooting struggles.”

Steel plate competitions are known for being particularly challenging. Each participant has to hit all five steel plate targets as quickly — and precisely — as possible, with penalties given for missed plates.

And unlike competitions with paper bulls-eyes or bowling pin targets, the steel plates provide a distinctive ding, letting shooters know when they’ve

hit their mark. And when they haven’t.

“It’s alphabetical order, so I was the first shooter,” says Somers Point Police Officer Mark Azagra. “It’s challenging, especially if you’re not used to shooting steel and hearing audible feedback…I’m not much of a competitor until this event because I like to be out here with everybody from different departments. It’s fun to just interact. It’s a morale booster.”

And while it’s fun for everyone, only a few participants go home as winners. This year, individual top shots went to Dean Adam from the Atlantic City Justice Facility (3rd); Josh Schwenger from Atlantic City Police Department (2nd); and Rodney Logan from New Jersey State Police (1st). Additionally, the Atlantic County Police Department team placed third; Brigantine Police Department placed second; and the New Jersey State Police took home the coveted Sheriff’s Cup for a first place win.

“We’re proud to continue to host the Annual Sheriff’s Cup and bring the local law enforcement community together for a day of skill, camaraderie, and remembrance,” says Scheffler.

“It’s really become a hallmark event.”
