We are fortunate to have a local business district with shops, restaurants, and services that we love and it’s imperative that we continue to support them. together, we have the power to create a great future for the next generation.ShoreLocal is a small busi ness for small businesses. We believe that local is always the best option. this issue of Shore Local is packed with events and opportunities to support local businesses in all ways. In terms of rainfall, the statis tics may surprise you. While the persistent heat and humidity was indeed a headline of the summer of 2022, perhaps the more talked about feature was the developing drought. At last check, most of South Jersey was in a moderate drought. And south of route 40, much of Cumberland and Cape may counties are in a severe drought. However, our summer rainfall to tals for the months of June, July, and August ranked as only the 38th driest, which was really only middle of the pack. the driest summer on record was back in 1964, with just over 5 inches of rain during that three month stretch that summer.

to be fair, my summer outlook did call for a wetter than average summer, which obviously didn’t materialize. A good meteorologist will always take responsibility for his or her failures, while taking credit for the successes. Ideally, the lat ter will outweigh the former most years. Of course, the mixed results further adds to my disdain of long range forecasting in general. b ut a general winter outlook will be out nevertheless by November.

The summer of 2022: Top 10 hottest or driest?

into a drought, and it usually takes a while to get out of one. So one or two soaking rains won’t erase a drought, but continued soakings eventually will. It will be interesting to see what happens as fall arrives and the fall foliage season comes in to view. You may have noticed some early color and early leaf loss this year, due to the stress created by the dryness on our deciduous trees. Continued dry weather through the time when our leaves change, from mid-October to mid-November, may lead to a shorter-lived and less vivid display than normal. m eanwhile, some occasional soaking rains between now and then may lead to the more brilliant colors some wait all year for. remember that the drought covers a large area, up through North Jersey and much of Upstate New York and New england. Keep that in mind if travels to see the fall color are on your calendar during the 2022 fall foliage season.

In 2022, we had more than double that at over 11 inches. Granted, the rainfall statistics at ACY are a little skewed, benefiting from two very localized flash flooding events near the airport in egg Harbor township, one in July and one in late August, that each dropped over 3 inches of rain on the rain gauge at the air port. Outside of those locally heavy downpours, rainfall totals were much less.

In terms of rainfall, we’ve put ad ditional dents in our rainfall deficit so far this September. but drier than average weather is also forecast to return, barring any tropical mischief, of which there hasn’t been much so far this year.

And with the “meteorological summer” of 2022 officially in the books, it ranks as a top 10 warmest on record, fairly impressive since June was actually a little cooler than average. Specifically, summer came in as the sixth warmest ever,

regarding the ongoing drought, remember it takes a while to get

With the summer of 2022 in the books, let’s all embrace meteorolog ical fall. And remember, in a weather person’s world, that’s the months of September, October, and November.

Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Now onto locals summer through early October, and the call is for continued warmer than average temperatures. Sure, there will be the inevitable and occasional shot of cool and comfy air from Canada that will give us a taste of fall in late September and October. b ut as in recent years, a warmer than average period from Labor Day to Columbus Day is expected.

he calendar says summer ends with the autumnal equinox, which this year is thursday, Sept. 22, specif ically at 9 :03 p.m . In South Jersey, Labor Day is always the traditional end of the summer vacation season, and the start of locals’ summer. but weather folk have to be different. And in a meteorologist’s world, we define summer to be the months of June, July, and August, and it’s the definition we use in determining where a summer ranks overall, his torically speaking.

or at least since continuous records have been kept at the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) since the 1950’s. As a side note, while this isn’t a column on climate change, all of the top 10 warmest summers have occurred since 2005, and four of the top six have been since 2018. remember back in the spring, my summer outlook called for a warmer than average summer. these days, it’s about as challenging as predict ing that the sun will rise in the east and set in the west. but I digress.

As local institutions go out of business, ask yourself an important question

b ut one of the biggest contrib utors to businesses shutting down is people just don’t want to work anymore. t here, I said it. It’s true. Not everyone, of course, but a lot of people just don’t want to work like our fathers or grandfathers did. We all pampered our kids too much. Hell, I was pampered. I didn’t want to work as hard as my father, who was a tastyKake route owner who worked his butt off six days a week. And it has gotten way worse when it comes to the current generation.

“It’s not fun anymore,” says Hohman, 57, who started working for Wards in the summer of 1976 and bought the business in 1988. “I just don’t want to do it anymore. It’s not what it used to be. Like right now, we can’t fill the orders we are getting after our announcement because we just don’t have enough help. believe me, this is not a spur-of-the-moment decision.”Hohman tried selling the business to other bakers, but they had issues finding help but, more importantly,

t here’s a reason Alfred Hitchcock created the classic film “ theSeagullsbirds.” have notoriously flown directly into humans to snag food, even taking candy from babies. Like every villain, seagulls have no moral compass or conscience. All they do is eat, breed and cause chaos.

are specialists. t hey have worked at their trade. “If you’re dealing with a gull that is really talented at stealing food,” Gorman said, “that gull has perfected the technique, possibly over the course of years.”remember, these birds learned this behavior. Start ing around the late 1800s, when Atlantic City became a major tourist attraction, visitors would throw food to the birds and watch the show as they battled each other for a bite. Since then, times have changed, but over generations of seagulls, they have internalized the notion that humans have food meant for them.

Sutherland and stage manager/light ing designer philip pallitto. m usical direction is by Debbie roland. peter and the Starcatcher opened on broadway in 2012, starring Chris tian borle and Celia Keenan- bolger, playing for 319 regular performances before transferring Off broadway for another year. At its most basic level, peter and the Starcatcher acts as a sort of prequel to peter pan, but the greater message needs no connecting fibers. Starcatcher shows us survival, the evolution of a leader, the power of community, and our universal need for home. It just manages to do it all while providing us with lots of laughter.

Atlantic City electric isn’t happy about it, since nearly all of them are too close to utility poles, which interferes with access.

patterson, speaking for the board, announced that the city authority has considered limiting third-story construc tion altogether in order to make margate more economically-friendly. preserving affordability in the town has become a major goal for the next five years.

In order for a property owner to build a rooftop deck, they must apply for a variance, or an exception to the zoning rule. Variances are burdensome for the applicant because they often require the services of costly engineers and attorneys. they also consume limited

It’s a magical gardening moment watching goldfinches picking apart the seeds of purple coneflowers and zinnias in my Lategarden.September is also the ideal time to plant trees and shrubs, move perennials, and make divisions. the cooler weather and bouts of rain will give newly planted trees and shrubs plenty of time to establish strong roots before both a hard freeze in winter and the heat and drought of the following summer. For the same reason, this is also a good season to do some rearranging in the garden. my friend esther and I used to joke that our plants should have wheels because we were always moving them around. You may be dissatisfied with a spot in the garden, but shifting a few plants to different locations can create a gratifying effect. the lower

ome people may think that the end of summer means it’s time to wrap up the garden ing season. but that would be like telling locals the beach is closed in September! You would be missing some of the best days of the year. In fact, when it comes to gardening, late summer and early fall provide the perfect conditions for starting anew in the garden.

You may want to wait a few more weeks for one of my favorite fall tasks—planting bulbs for spring. I usually wait until at least October to plant bulbs, but it’s definitely not too early to shop. Scour gardening catalogs and reputable web-sites for tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths, alli ums, and so much more. Don’t delay on this late summer task; avid gar deners will get a case of tulipmania and you will soon see the dreaded red notice “out of stock” underneath your favorite bulbs. You can get through a dreary winter a little easier when you have visions of bluebells and aconites dancing in your head.

brussels sprouts can be grown from seedlings found at garden nurseries this time of year. these cool-season vegetables would not do well in the heat of summer but flourish in the cooler weather of late summer and early fall. Some of these vegetables are very cold-hardy and can handle a light frost. Vegetables like carrots, kale, and Swiss chard are even said to taste sweeter after a frost.

t hough we do have some hot days remaining, overall, tempera tures have dropped, giving us and our plants some much needed relief. these cooler temperatures mean it’s time to get planting again. For the impatient gardener, vegetables like lettuces, spinach, beets, and radishes are fast growers that can be planted by seed directly in the garden with quick results. Vegetables that take longer to grow such as broccoli and

As you can see, the end of sum mer is not time for a garden at rest. plenty of tasks await and much good can be gleaned from the late summer and early fall garden. enjoy the late season bloomers while planning for the future. Just be sure to save some time for the local’s secret treasure— beach days in September.

Late September, time to start the garden anew

In addition to being a good month for planting seeds, September is also the time for collecting seeds from spent plants. take a stroll through your garden and look for plants that have produced seeds. I was recently delighted to find out that my four o’clock flowers which were so fun and pretty this summer are now covered in spiky black seeds. I’m looking for ward to saving these seeds for next year’s plantings. right now, walking in my garden is like shopping through a seed catalog. I’m finding seeds from dill, cilantro, okra, marigolds, zin nias, cone flowers, and false indigo. On the other hand, weeds are also producing seeds that will spread like wildfire. You’ll want to remove the seed heads from weeds to keep them from spreading. Do so carefully or some may fall to the ground or blow

“Generally speaking, large jack pot games tend to feature a more volatile math model, with lower hit frequencies. t he bigger jackpots are the byproduct of spin combina tions that produce no hits or minimal return hits in exchange for hits that are substantial. regardless of which game you de cide to play, ted recommends playing with your player card. He told me that one of the biggest myths in the slot world is that playing with a card al lows the casino to see who is playing the machine and affect the payback accordingly. ted stated that nothing could be further from the truth, and that playing with a card merely allows the player to receive credit and future incentives, including comps and free play, based on their play.

“System wide jackpots, or Wide Area progressives as they are known in the business, allow casinos to pay out larger than normal, life changing jackpots, whereby multiple casinos and even multiple states contribute to the jackpot payout, which is progres sive in nature. the payout, which can range from several hundred thousand dollars to millions of dollars, is typical ly the obligation of the manufacturer of the machine, and comes in the form of an annuity or a lump sum payment. the majority of a casino’s jackpots are house funded, with jackpots typically

ow that we are into Septem ber, I can officially write that football is back. pick a level and football is operating in full force right now. High school football is back on Fridays, college football’s big day is Saturday, and the NFL is back on Sundays. Of course, I’m sure you’ve seen the things on Facebook titled “Football rules” and rule #1 is “Do not call me after 8 p.m. on thursday nights, after 11 a.m. on Sundays or 7 p.m. on mondays”

On the offensive side of the ball, Hurts targeted his new fa vorite weapon early and often as rownwide finished the game with 10 catches for 155 yards. Dallas Goedert caught three balls for 60 yards, while Kenilesascal

Oh yes, football is back at all levels, and I couldn’t be happier!

were barely on the board. I admit, I am concerned that DeVonta Smith was targeted four times and finished with zero catches. It’s only Week One though, and for the most part, the offense looked good enough to win football games. However, no one is pleased with the agles defense giving up 35 points to the Lions. Yes, Detroit is improved in year #2 under Dan Campbell, but many are questioning why Jonathan Gannon’s defense wasn’t able to stop Lions running back D’Andre Swift? Al so, why did they make Jared Goff look so good? Goff finished the game 21-37 for 215 yards and two touchdowns.

A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts both had a huge game against Detroit

● We’ll begin with the eagles as they locked in a roster and also traded for safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and the Saints' 7th-round pick in 2025. In return, the Saints receive the eagles' 5th-round pick in 2023 and the worst of their two 6th-round picks in 2024. to me, chalk this up to another “Howie being Howie” kind of move as he waited out the market, and landed a starting defensive back / safety that was an upgrade on anything the team already had. brilliant.

● For the most part, the eagles made it through the game healthy, except for defensive end Derek barnett. barnett tore his ACL in the second half against the Lions and will miss the rest of the season now. I always think of him as the guy who recovered the fumble in the big Super bowl win over the patriots, so it’s a shame to see him go down in Week One.

lead over the Lions twice, but had to hang on as they only won 3835. t he e agles are also dealing with a season-ending injury from one defensive player. In baseball, the phillies have 22 games left as I write this, and have a game and a half lead over the padres for the 3rd and final NL Wildcard playoff spot. the schedule is in their favor, but they must keep on winning if they want to play October baseball. the Flyers have made some news as they prepare for their first training camp under a new head coach. the Sixers make a trade to shore up the backup center position. On the local front, a millville alum is going for an mLb record. plus, let’s not forget about the other high school sports in the fall.

● Speaking of the playoffs, the phillies haven’t been there since 2011, and they’re hoping to end that drought this October. the team is calling it the “Hunt for red October”, and with 22

When I last wrote, the eagles were shaping their final 53-man roster. Now, as I write this, they have won their season opener and are trying to start the season off “two and oh” with a win at home over the minnesota Vikings.

Football Is Finally Back

● Now to Week One, where the eagles went to Detroit and once again put up big points against the Lions. the difference this year is that the Lions also had an answer. the birds fell be hind 7-zip early, but after a “pick-six” by James bradberry, led 21-to-7 after the extra point. they went up 31-14 after a Kenneth Gainwell 3rd quarter touchdown, and also led 38-21 after a boston Scott touchdown in the 3rd quarter as well. However, things got a little dicey as the Lions scored the next 14 points and cut it to a threepoint margin

Up next, the b irds play their home opener against the Vikings on 9-19, and although there will be a sellout crowd for monday Night Football, the Vikings looked pretty good in beating Green bay in Week One.

● this past offseason, barnett tested the open market as a free agent, but he returned to the eagles on a two-year contract that guaranteed him $4.5 million in the first year. After the eagles finished second to last in sacks, they emphasized improving their pass rush, highlighted by the addition of edge rusher/linebacker Haason reddick, who signed a threeyear deal worth $45 million. reddick leaped barnett and veteran brandon Graham on the depth chart; 2021 pro bowler Josh Sweat and reddick start ed on the edges against the Lions. but with barnett likely out for the rest of the season, the team’s depth will be tested. Second-year defensive end tarron Jackson has been mentioned as a possible replacement.

● Since we are talking injuries, I have to mention the hand injury that Dal las Q b Dak prescott suffered in the Cowboys loss to tampa bay. prescott needs surgery and is expected to miss at least six weeks. You never want to see a guy get hurt, but this has eagles fans even m O re optimistic that the birds can at least win the division and make the playoffs.

● As always, I’ll close with some local items, and start with a quasi-local item as m ike trout is on the verge of a possible record in major League b aseball as I write this. t he “ m ill ville m eteor” has homered in seven straight games as I write this column. pittsburgh's Dale Long established the m L b record of eight straight games with a home run in 1956. Don mattingly of the Yankees matched it in 1987, as did Seattle's Ken Griffey Jr. in 1993. I’ll loop back in the next column and see if trout is able to set this record or not.

Pete has been the local "sports guy" at the Jersey Shore since 2004. After a decade with TV 40, he joined 97.3 ESPN radio to talk Eagles, Phillies, Sixers & Flyers with Mike Gill on "The SportsBash" from 2-6 p.m.

● there’s just one item from basketball to catch you up on and that’s the fact that the Sixers went out and acquired montrezl Harrell, who has connections to Doc rivers and Daryl m orey, on a two-year deal. Harrell, a former sixth man of the year, adds to the impres sive depth that morey and the Sixers have built this offseason.

I’ll close with my usual thanks and let you know that I am very thankful for your readership and hope you will patronize the businesses you see in the pages here. remember, the LOCAL in Shore Local comes from the support of those busi nesses, so please support them!

● As I write this, they won five out of six in their homestand against the marlins and the Nationals. Now, the phillies are in miami for three before they play three in Atlanta. that series against the braves will be another “put up or shut up” moment as even though they look like they will qualify for the play offs, I’m still not confident that they can actually win a postseason series!

constant, taking the ball more often than any starting pitcher in baseball since 2018.

● I’m not optimistic about the Flyers chances, but I will say that if anyone can turn things around, I’m confident that tortorella will definitely give it his all trying!

games left on the schedule, they are in a position to make it to the post season.

● but first, let’s see if they get there. I think they will. And when they do, it will be interesting because making the playoffs will mean different things to different guys. to bryce Harper, it will signal a return to the national stage alongside many of baseball’s other superstars. to Jean Segura, it will mark a chance to experience the playoffs after more than 1,300 regu lar-season games. to John middleton, it will be the payoff for authorizing a $240 million payroll to get back into the tournament and try to win it all.

● to this, I say “GOOD”, and I hope that the new Flyers bench boss holds the players accountable for their mistakes and also praises their successes. Although tortorella didn’t have the chance to meet with everyone, he sent out an email to the entire team outlin ing his expectations for training camp, which begins Sept. 21 in Voorhees. the short answer is – you don’t have to! A tasting of this size can feel overwhelming. Here are some key tips to help you navigate the evening with ease:

Finding a cure for mS is a cause that has been close to my heart for many years. After my mom, Jayne, was diagnosed with mS in 1990, her life was forever altered, as she was moved from a cane, to a walker, to a wheelchair. Finding a cure for m S has been the charitable focus of passion Vines since we first opened our doors, and Jayne inspired the creation of the right Notes. After a lifetime of advocacy for the m S community, Jayne passed away in June, surrounded by her family. In honor of her beautiful life and leg acy, we will continue our mission to find a cure.

I have to say, my degree of sadness has to do with the feeling most of my life that I had one foot in America and one in Great britain. those of you who follow my column know that my mother was born and raised in en gland until meeting and marrying my father, a member of the U. some of the most tumultuous times is a testament to her strength of char acter, especially since she was only in line for the crown after her uncle unexpectedly abdicated the throne. but even at the young age of twen ty-one, on her birthday, then princess elizabeth gave a speech to the british Commonwealth in which she said in part, “I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service or our great imperial family to which we all belong.” Little did she know then to what extent her service would be.

When it came to loyalty to a coun try, mum was a study in contrasts. When I would tease her on July 4th about America gaining her indepen dence, she sniffed and just said we would have been better off staying in the Commonwealth. perhaps. She thought American football was silly. “Why does everyone have to jump on the lad with the ball? that’s ridic ulous.” rugby was more her style. Again, I can’t disagree. Her love of everything b ritish almost knew no bounds.

I gripped the shopping cart and hung my head in disbelief trying to grasp the enormity of the event. When asked about the parents’ b ill of rights, Ginet said, “It can be used as a means to keep kids ignorant. I understand that parents may want to protect younger children, but by middle school, kids devel op their own voice. they deserve to know the truth about pregnancy options, sex safety, and gender identity.”

58 September 15, 2022

decision by the Ocean City board of education to adopt a controversial state sex ed ucation and gender identity curriculum has prompted protests, a pe tition and a call to pass a parents’ bill of rights in New Jersey.

the councilman praised Superinten dent of Schools matthew Friedman for managing both sides of the issue and caring for the student body as a whole.

On the subject of the parents’ bill of rights, she says, “None of us know what the curriculum actually includes, and I believe some of the rumors around it are over-exaggerated. If there is a problem, we can address it when we identify it, but for now, we should give our education system a Friedman, chance.”theOcean City School Dis trict superintendent who was sworn in this past July, said in a press statement that the district considers local sensibil ities and the new curriculum allows par ents to make decisions for their children. He will be holding community meetings to discuss specifics with parents, students andLastteachers.school year, the Ocean City School District faced allegations of bul lying and abuse at the high school, includ ing accusations of bullying against gay students. District officials said at the time that the district reached out to police to review the online petition that raised the concerns, which also included allegations of sexual assault.

It includes controversial content such as gender dysphoria, abortion as a viable option for someone who doesn’t want to be pregnant, and sex education with graphic descriptions.testimony by reimer as well as state ments by concerned parents played a role in the decision by council to back the par ents’ bill of rights. In his remarks, he said Ocean City is a “conservative community” and families of similar values would be drawn to the district, and their taxes would increase funds available to schools.

If you or someone you know feels victimized because of your sexual orien tation or gender identity, reach out for help at thetrevorproject.org for mental health support.

“Only my really close friends know about my orientation, and it really hurts when conservatives, particularly Chris tians, make hurtful comments about people like me,” she said. “Ocean City doesn’t feel like a safe place to be who I am,Onopenly.”thesubject of health curriculum, the sophomore confessed that the sex education answers questions for her that she has been too afraid to ask.

A sophomore at OCHS who did not want to include her name told Shore Lo cal News that she feels isolated and hated as a closeted lesbian.

“I don’t have a problem with the curriculum, but as a parent, I worry that my children might be too young to learn about these tough topics,” rotundi said.

A “Welcoming Walk” has been planned for 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at the cor ner of 5th Street and the boardwalk in support of the LG btQ students, alumni and the community. the event will include a peaceful walk around the school fol lowed by a picnic to discuss future events. Nate’s mom, pam Ginet, said it’s al right to defend your child and stand up for what you believe, “but when you spew hate against children, that’s not okay.

ccording to Forbes.com, inflation occurs when pric es rise, which ultimately decreases the purchasing power of your dollars. For example, during an inflationary period, your dol lar could buy you two apples today, but only one apple tomorrow. there are currently many ways that inflation can spike, but one that stands out more than others is the supply chain constraints due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, some suppliers shut down, and some were working with skeleton crews. because of this, inventory levels lessened and became tight. As demand started to increase and as the economy started to make a comeback and reopen, this pressured pricing and caused items and services to increase in price across the board hence causing inflation. the Federal reserve analyzes infla tion consistently by way of the pCe or the personal Consumption e xpendi tures price Index. they actually focus on the "core" components which mea sure the prices of goods and services while stripping out the volatile pricing of food and energy. the "core" pCe report for July was released at 4.6, which means the index is more than 2% higher than the Fed's target level of 2%. Inflation and The Fed

bostic was on CN bC and he said that he hopes to get a "restrictive" policy by year-end which he defined as a Fed Funds rate closer to their target of around 3.5% to 3.7%. bostic noted that he's comfortable holding rates at a restrictive level for a while and that it's premature to think about cutting rates. Also on the Fed Front, Fed Chair Jerome powell continued to talk tough on inflation last week saying that it is still far too high and he is committed to doing the job of reducing it. the bond market, which impacts mortgage rates, can take this negatively if it seems like the Fed is too far behind the curve, but on the other hand, the bond mar ket can take this positively if the Fed proves that they have its job under control and are doing what it takes to tame
