From the Editor I learned early on in my life that work is important. m y dad worked in a factory and had multiple "side jobs" to make ends meet. they called it "moonlighting" back in the day. One of those side gigs was driving a taxi (there was no Uber back then). As a little girl, nothing was more exciting to me than a chance to ride in Daddy's yellow taxi. before surveillance cameras were a thing, my dad also worked as a local department store detective, posing as a customer, but always watching for shoplifters.mymom also worked outside of the house long before most moms did. At home, there was always work to be done as well. even at a young age, I was snapping beans for dinner, mowing the lawn, or doing the dishes. the work seemed endless.

Here’s to the workers

As a family we worked hard, but we also played hard. As a reward for all that work, we had grand picnics and trips to the beach with all the extras. "Work hard, play hard" was our motto. When I met bob in college in 1989, it was clear we shared the same work ethic. We bonded over fun, extraor dinary experiences during the school year. Going on hikes, exploring caves or flying into the river on a rope swing were some of the adventures we en joyed around our college campus in upstateWhenpennsylvania.summercame though, it was all about making money. bob worked hard as a mover and I worked as a summer camp counselor. Life's a balancing act. making mon ey, working hard and being reliable are incredibly important characteristics. but so is being able to enjoy life to the fullest. Doing something that is out of your norm or a bit more adventur ous than usual always creates lasting memories.Somehow bob and I have managed to still incorporate a good amount of work and fun into our lives. On tues days and Wednesdays, we both work incredibly long days to prepare Shore Local to go to print. Other days we work less, but always some. mixed into our week, we grab opportunities to play with our dogs and have adven tures.this issue of Shore Local is dedicat ed to the workers that keep our corner of the world going. We may take them for granted sometimes, like the gas attendant, the cashier, ride attendant, etc…take a moment and imagine how difficult and frustrating our lives would be without them. Our tourist and hos pitality industry would crumble with out the countless people that come to work everyday to do their part. Work also gives us purpose, a way that we individually can contribute to our community. If we are lucky, at some point in our lives our passions and work align. bob and I are happy to say we are at that point now. However it was a long time coming with years of grunt work, side gigs and doing whatever it took to pay the bills and provide for our family. every one of those jobs that we may have hated or simply tolerated shaped us into the people we are today. Difficult jobs and situations often teach us the strength and endurance to get to where we are going. there is value in the journey. However, if you told me that while I was hustling to clean rental houses every Saturday, I may have punched you. Hindsight is alwaysHere's20/20.tothe workers that make the world go round. We see you and appreciate you. We know you make sacrifices every day to honor your commitments, support your loved ones or follow your dreams. If you are out enjoying service this holiday weekend, be sure to show your appreciation with patience, a smile and a solidWishingtip. you and yours a restful, relaxing and fun Labor Day Weekend.

Currents of the Atlantic

Weather By Dan Skeldon T hey say good things come to those who wait. For those waiting to enjoy some warmer ocean wa ter off the South Jersey shore this summer, the wait has been a long one. Well, apparently m other Nature thinks better late than never! After shivering to consistently cool water temperatures for a good part of the summer, especially during the hottest stretches of sizzling sum mer temperatures on the sand, the Atlantic Ocean off of the Steel pier in Atlantic City surged into the mid 80s during the fourth week of Au gust. And it was warm enough to set a preliminary record of 84.7 degrees on Friday, August 26th, the warmest ever recorded in over 100 years of ocean temperature records. It wasn’t too long ago that we established the record that was just broken, with 83.8 degree ocean water being recorded off the Steel pier in early August of 2016. eighty degree water is certainly not un heard off of our coasts, but it’s also not something that happens every summer. traditionally, our ocean temperatures, on average, top out in the low 70s in late August and early September.Localsand vacationers were treated to almost an entire week of 80-something-degree water during the week of August 20-26th, and that’s indeed a rare treat. Ocean temperatures in the 80s are more commonly found off the coast of the Carolinas, up to and including the Outer banks of North Carolina. that’s courtesy of the Gulf Stream, a current of warm water that flows up the east Coast from the tropical latitudes, but takes a right turn east of the Carolinas, taking the tropically warm water farther out to sea and away from South Jersey. Here along the Jersey shore, our water temperatures are more de pendent on our predominant wind direction, something we discussed in a weather column earlier this sum mer. t hrough a good part of July and early August, warm west and southwest winds were pumping up some sweltering and stifling heat, as we sweated to several week-long heat waves. m eanwhile, those same winds pushed the warm water on the surface of the ocean farther offshore, and colder water came up from down below to replace it. the result: 55-65 degree ocean water that certainly cooled you off from the scorcher on the sand, but was too cool for most of our liking. b ut when winds come from the east and southeast, some of that warm Gulf Stream water can be sent in our direction, a process called, as you may have guessed, downwelling. Of course, east and southeast ar en’t wind directions that are too common in the summertime, minus when they occur with localized af ternoon sea-breezes. And therefore 80-something-degree water isn’t all too common either. b ut when we’re treated to it, we naturally don’t wasteNowit.the recent record is still only preliminary, and the water sensor at the Steel pier is currently out of service as it is investigated to see if it was functioning correctly. b ut whether or not the record stands, late August locals and vacationers were treated to the warmest water of the summer so far, hands down!Of course we don’t expect the 80-degree ocean waters to last longterm into September. b ut there’s always the chance we briefly spike back above 80 degrees. And even if we don’t, remember the ocean is slower to warm in the spring than the land, but it’s also slower to cool in the late summer and fall. So

basinweeks.activitywithwhichhurricanetemberthetendocean70-something-degreewatercanoftenexwellpastLaborDay.WithLaborDaycomestraditionalearlySeppeakoftheAtlanticseason,aseasonhasbeeneerilyquietapronouncedlackofoverthelastsixWeshouldseethebecomeincreasingly active in September, but don’t wor ry about any warmer-than-average water off our coast increasing our chances for a hurricane. Let this be a reminder that our hurricane chances are not at all tied to the water tem peratures off our coast. We can get struck when the water is cold, and you only have to look to Sandy for proof of that. And we’ve been struck several times with warmer ocean water as well, like with Gloria and Irene for instance. Steering currents and the jet stream play a much more pivotal role in determining if a tropical system will directly impact our coast. So hopefully you enjoyed the warm water while it was here. b e cause while good things do indeed come to those who wait, remember that all good things must come to an end. On the other hand, there’s a long way to go until our coldest average ocean temperatures of the year, the mid 30s, which don’t occur until mid-February. enjoy the rest of your summer!

I f you found yourself on the boardwalk in August 2020, you would have been shocked at how few families were buying ice cream, riding ferris wheels and having a good time. by 2021, with a case of collective "cabin fever," people came back in droves, seeking a getaway and taste of normalacy. today, tourists are back and bountiful, but a little more cautious about how they spend their hard-earned vacation dollars.the pandemic created a micro cosm of a traditional economic cycle. In 2020, we experienced a recession and shutdown. In 2021, households were desperate to leave their homes and enjoy a vacation, leading to more crowds and then a leveling off in 2022. So what did it mean for this sum mer?Kelsey m cGuire has worked at Gillian’s Wonderland pier for the past three years. the Atlantic-Cape Com munity College freshman has operated kiddie rides along the boardwalk each year, and has noticed the differences between the summer tourist seasons. “In 2020, everyone was wearing a mask and sanitizer was everywhere. In 2021, the boardwalk was packed, so much so that you could hardly walk in a straight line,” said m cGuire. “ this year, the crowds have been lighter than last year.” If you step onto the boards on a thursday evening, bands are playing, shoppers enter and exit storefronts, lines sprout from counter-service restaurants, and kids dance and jump and weave their way between the crowds. A majority of the boardwalk ers spend their time between 8th and 11th streets. Sixth Street,, where Wonderland pier is located, seems to be less crowded. t he Wyatt Family, who own a house in margate, spends at least a month down the shore every summer.

Diane Wieland, director of the Cape m ay County Department of tourism, says that families have had to make difficult decisions while on vacation. She suspects that visitors are making more meals in their rental homes and bringing more items from home, leading to reductions in sales at shops and restaurants. the slowdown this year was expected, but many resorts and retailers are optimistic for the coming months, when many fall activities and festivals take place, Wieland said. Not all businesses are struggling. t he state Division of Gaming en forcement reports that Atlantic City in-casino gaming revenue was $299 million for July 2022, up 8 percent from July 2021. Jackpot wins are up 16 percent as well. the success of the NAACp Conven tion and National Sports Collectors Convention has led to more tourism in Atlantic City, which means that more hotel rooms are booked, restaurant tables are filled, and slot machines are played. this could be a good sign for the late summer and fall seasons. While they are down the shore, the Wyatt family says that they are more cautious about spending frivolously. t he reading natives are cooking more at home, biking to destinations rather than spending money on gas and parking, turning off the lights to reduce their electric bill, and going to the beach in Atlantic City instead of margate so they won’t need to buy beach“Youtags.gotta do what you gotta do,” said Jonathan Wyatt. “I am just thank ful to have enough money to be down the shore as often as we are. Hopefully things will become easier next year.”

By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

Jonathan Wyatt and his wife Juliet enjoy taking their children, Carson, 10, Logan, 6, and phoebe, 5, mini-golfing, biking on the boardwalk, and tasting ice “Wecream.set aside over one thousand dollars every year to splurge at restau rants and have a good time,” said Jonathan. “ but this year, because of the inflation, we have had to be more mindful of saving money. m y wife, Juliet, is a teacher so she doesn’t work in the summer. but because of inflation, she has considered working year-round.”JulietWyatt signed on to work as an online tutor part-time so the fam ily can go to restaurants and boating without worrying about higher costs. “I just hope that this decision doesn’t lead to me working every summer, becoming too dependent on extra income,” she said. many families have opted to start a side hustle or an extra part-time gig to cover expenses that have in creased this year. For some, inflation has affected them to the point that they have had to cut short or eliminate their vacation entirely. this past month, as hundreds of young adults head to college, busi nesses have experienced extreme staffing shortages, which has caused some to reduce operating hours or cut their season short. Along the Ocean City boardwalk, multiple stores posted “Help Wanted” signs and shops like Starbucks, which once was open almost all day, lock their doors around 6 p.m. businesses such as Steel pier in At lantic City have reported that earnings this summer are down by 20 percent compared to 2021. Anthony Catanoso, owner of Steel pier, told NJ Advance m edia that he and his peers consider the tourism surge last year to be “an anomaly.”“people are not as freewheeling as last year,” Catanoso said.

MJ: We were trying to go back to the golden days like early ’80s – ‘Love at First Sting,” “ b lackout” were fan favorites - and the idea was let’s go back to original Scorpions DNA. producers bend you in their direction, which is fine, but it’s one of the reasons an album sounds like this or sounds like that because you can hear the signature from each and every producer through the many years. this time, without any outside influence, it sounds more like pure Scorpions.

SC: Did not having a producer give you more freedom?

↘Continued on 22

By Scott Cronick

SC: The whole album has great intensity, but I love the way you end it with “When You Know,” which is just a powerful finale, MJ: “Love at First Sting” ended with “Still Loving You,” a very pow erful ballad, and we thought, “What can you play after a song like ‘When You Know’ and ‘Still Loving You?’” Nothing. So it’s a great way to end an album as opposed to putting it somewhere in the middle.

Scorpions When: 8 p.m. m onday, Sept. 5 Where: event Center, b orgata Hotel Casino & Spa, Atlantic City Price: tickets range from $96 to $376 and are available at ticket master.com Websites: t he-Scorpions.com; theborgata.com

SC: When you look back at the history of the Scorpions, everything changed when you joined in 1978.

MJ: It made a big difference – you are absolutely right. before I joined in 1978 – 44 years ago, which is unbelievable to think about – they didn’t really find their style yet. they were different things on those ’70s rock albums, and you couldn’t really say this was the Scorpions’ style. When I joined them for “Lovedrive” and the follow up, we made it bigger like “ the Zoo” and then “ blackout” … we reached headliner status, and then “Love at First Sting” was like top 10 for the whole year in 1984. So within five years - from 1978 to 1983-’84 - we really conquered the world because we had a distinct sound. You know it’s the Scorpions on the radio even before the vocals come in.

MATTHIAS JABS: We had planned to record an album anyway. We were going to Los Angeles to do it with a producer, but because of restrictions, we stayed home and rented a studio and did it without a producer. And that’s what it sounds like Scorpions pure. there was no one to talk you into doing something you might not like. So, we had a great time in the studio and didn’t even feel like there was a pandemic out there. We were pretty much isolated, but that is how you want to work in a studio anyway.

t took 57 years, but the Scor pions will finally rock Atlantic City - like a hurricane – 8 p.m. m onday, Sept. 5. t he Germany-based hard rock outfit arrives in Atlantic City after an amazing year that saw them per form in stadiums and arenas around the world, including a month-long residency at planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, release their 19th studio album – “ rock b eliever” – and add more album sales to the more than 100 million records they have sold worldwide.theScorpions, known for hits in cluding “ rock You Like a Hurricane,” “Wind of Change,” “Still Loving You,” “No One Like You,” “ big City Nights,” “ rhythm of Love” and countless oth ers, have been labeled everything from hair metal to heavy metal, but at their core, they are just an iconic rockGuitaristband. matthias Jabs, who has been with the band since 1978, joins original members guitarist rudolf Schenker and vocalist Klaus m aine along with bassist pawel maciwoda and drummer mikkey Dee for a truly special night in A.C. Jabs took the time to talk to me during my radio show – "Off t he press with Scott Cronick" on New stalk WOND 1400-Am , 92.3-Fm and WOND radio.com – about what fans can expect when the Scorpions make their Atlantic City debut on Labor Day.

MJ: It’s been great, but no matter what we play first, people go crazy because the show is starting. b ut it’s a great way to open the show. We also play “Seventh Sun,” a heavy song, “ peacemaker,” and an acoustic version of “When You Know” because that is how we do it on the deluxe album. We actually cut down a bit because we had too many songs from the new album in the beginning. When you write a new album with new material it’s great for us because we need to refresh our setlist after touring with more or less the same songs everyone wants to hear for year. We cannot not play them, so you only have so much time to play new material.

SC: You have also been opening the new tour with the first song on the new album, “Gas in the Tank.”

Scorpions will rock Borgata like a hurricane; farewell to Nero’s

He hosts a daily radio show – "Off The Press with Scott Cronick" - 4 to 6 p.m. weekdays on Newstalk WOND 1400-AM, 92.3-FM, and WONDRadio.com, and he also coowns Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall in Atlantic City, while working on various projects, including charitable efforts, throughout the area. He can be reached at scronick@comcast.net.

Restaurant rumors this column, which will appear in every issue of Shore Local, will also feature news outside of the casinos, too.So here’s one tidbit: essl’s Dugout, the great breakfast and lunch spot owned by bobby and Carey Hettman sperger, have some big things brewing, literally.plans include an Italian bistro and market, an expansion of the e ssl’s brand and more. Check out this col umn for more details in the future.

SC: You own a music shop right? MJ: Yes, it started out in 2007. It started with my signature guitars I have custom made for me, and as soon as I would go on stage people would ask, “Where can I buy it?” and “Where can I get it?” So I thought, “How can I handle this problem?” So I got this offer – two previous owners wanted to retire – and I went to m unich and loved the area and this very cool shop so I said, “I’ll buy it.” I made it nicer, presented these custom-made guitars but also have regular vintage guitars from Fender and Gibson. I don’t see it very often. I had the biggest candy apple red Fender collection, so for Christmas one year I decorated the one wall in candy apple red guitars to give it a Christmas feeling. that was a nice way to do it.

SC: What is your crown jewel? MJ: It’s the explorer I started out with. I played my first Scorpions show with it and recorded everything from “ the Zoo” to “No One Like You” to “Still Loving You” to “ rock You Like a Hurricane” with that guitar. I had it in the Hall of Fame in Cleveland for quite some time, and it was insured for $500,000, but it’s worth more to many people. It’s the guitar that played all of those great tunes from the ’80s.

SC: It is baffling to me that the Scorpions are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. MJ: I am patient. I also believe we will be inducted, and I am not frustrat ed at all. Sometimes you wonder - I thought it was called the rock and roll Hall of Fame – and you wonder why some of these artists are in there. may be they should give it a different name, and then it would be OK. maybe one day – we can do without it, too - but I think it would be right if we would get inducted.

Farewell to Nero’s One of Atlantic City’s all-time greatest restaurants – the legendary Nero’s Italian Steakhouse at Caesars Atlantic City – will close after nearly three decades when the staff cel ebrates four more dinner services thursday to Sunday. the iconic restaurant helmed by General manager betty m cHugh and Chef m aurizio Di m arco was like a second home for me and many oth ers who celebrated special occasions there, enjoyed its lavish brunch that was discontinued during COVID and felt like part of the family whenever we walked in there. m cHugh and many others who work at Nero’s have been there since it opened 28 years ago. the food was always exceptional, and the service was extraordinary. Its departure will leave the stellar Capriccio at resorts Casino Hotel as the only true oldschool casino dining experience left in the city as casinos make room for celebrity chefs and name brands. m any of Nero’s staff will work at Gordon ramsay’s pub, ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen that will debut in the next couple weeks and the Japanese restaurant Nobu that will debut in October. No matter where they end up, any restaurant is lucky to have them, and we are all lucky to be served by them. Di marco will head to the pub, where he will be room chef. As far as mcHugh, she is uncertain what her future holds, but I know she will bring the same passion for the business and love for her customers wherever she lands. She is one of a kind.Nero’s will be missed but will nev er be forgotten.

A s w e wrap up the summer season and move into fall, many shore homeowners and businesses are thinking of updating their outdoor spaces. When it comes to the indoor comforts of home outside, Ocean Outdoor Teak and Polly outlet is ready to help get the look you want with quality furniture that lasts. Like many businesses, furniture retailers have faced a shortage of in coming inventory, leaving families and businesses without quality products to make their space look the best. Retailers across the country say that shipment issues are the primary cause of the shortage. Because most patio furniture makers work ou tside the United States, tariffs and taxes along with other inter national issues have been on the rise. This creates is creating big problems for homeowners and businesses alike. For tunately, local buyers need not to worry since this is n’t a problem for Ocean Outdoor Teak and Poly Outlet. They have new shipments coming in every week. Truckloads of beautiful, modern furniture are available for customers to browse and purchase. “Because the outdoor season is relatively short here in New Jersey, it is important for us to stock enough furniture for our local cus tomers to have immediately,” says store owner Alice DiGiovanni. “We are ready now, with a full selection of colors and designs of both Poly and Teak furniture.”

Poly only needs to be cleaned with some good, old-fashioned soap and water. Tables, chairs, deep seating sets and pub sets are ready to go to their new home today. Poly pub sets are popular at the shore. Two seat pub sets start at $950 and our four-seat pub sets with a pub table start at $1,400. Pub and bar sets are great because they allow couples and families to see over deck rail ings so their view is not obsured. These sets have the potential to make Ocean City, Sea Isle, and Margate customers very happy. The popular folding Adirondack Chairs start at $299. They are perfect for fire pits on cool autumn evenings. The Adirondack chairs sit low to the ground and offer a casual, relaxed feel. Alice reports they are selling very well to campers that seek comfort outdoors. After 15 years in Somers Point, The Teak and Poly Outlet moved to Cape May County. They are lo cated on Route 9 in Ocean View/ Clermont Cape May County. It's a beautiful area two miles south of exit 17 on the Garden State Parkway (Sea Isle exit). “We have a much larger store here and a lot of room to expand, with large outdoor displays, and a large workshop to finish and refinish our teak furniture.” says Alice’s daughter, Allison. “Over the years you may have seen our furniture at the Ocean City Yacht Club, Cape May-Lewes Ferry, Hyatt Penns Landing, Beach Creek Oyster Bar to name of few. Our company has been in the New Jersey shore area for nearly 20 years. Our past stores in Cape May and Somers Point have been combined with one convenient store right in the middle, in Dennis Township. Teak has always been the gold stan dard in outdoor tables and chairs but its new rival, Poly lumber furniture is quickly overtaking the outdoor market. Poly lumber is built mostly from recycled products and holds its color well. Com bine its color retention with stainless steel hardware, a variety of color combi nations and styles, and you may find that poly is the best choice for beach homes, vacation resorts or country living. It is extremely durable and resistant to nearly anything Mother Nature throws its way. Poly plastic furniture can be left outside in the summer and winter without any adverse effects. The plas tic is resistant to sun, rain, sleet, snow, wind, saltwater, chlorine and mildew. You can’t say that about furniture made from wood or metal. Poly furniture is low maintenance and easy to care for; it requires no special coatings, sanding or staining. It does not require hazardous chemical treatments to maintain its durability.

By Fred Miller P resident Gro ver Cleve land signed a bill in 1894 designating the first m onday in September a federal holiday called Labor Day. It was to recognize the contri bution that America’s workers have made to the growth and strength of the coun try. Leo b amberger, an Ocean City summer resident, is credited with helping found this annual summer holiday. “ b amberger La bor Day Story in 500 Newspapers Across Nation” was the front page headline in the September 25, 1958, Ocean City newspaper. the article began, “Ocean City earned a mention in close to 500 newspapers from coast to coast by virtue of having Leo bamberger, of philadelphia, as one of its summer residents." In 1958, m r. bamberger, at age 90, was the last survivor of the group of labor leaders who started the move ment for the obser vance of Labor Day. His son, Henry bam berger, assembled some factual material about his father, and made it available to the press just before Labor Day, reasoning that it would have timely news value. even he was aston ished at the way the story sold itself to editors.“Helping to aid its publicity valve the mention that Leo bamberger was chair man of Ocean City’s first summer baby parade 49 years ago.” This stamp, honoring American labor, was issued on September 3, 1956 in Camden, New Jersey.

“E nd of summer is so bittersweet. We wait for this season all year long, but we know that if it never ended, it wouldn’t be as sweet.” t his poetic sentiment inspired Lauren Demarco, a 33-year-old from Ocean City, to create the cover art on this issue of Shore Local Newsmaga zine. the school nurse loves crafting, mixed-media pieces using paint and collage to represent feelings such as love, peace, and family togetherness.

“ t he colors in this piece, titled ‘ endless Summer,’ feel warm and welcoming and rich,” said Demarco. “It feels like the end of August on the boardwalk.”Demarco got her start as an artist paired with Laurenspiredpaint. is De m arco’s art company, where audiences can see "over-the-top, beautiful fantasies of simple, lovefilled moments at home, staying true to your per sonal path, and bountiful gifts from nature reflect ed in my work," according to the artist’s website. b y mixing patterns, Demarco creates depth and texture, upcycling thrifted fabrics and book pages, and pasting them onto paintings. She has challenged herself to complete a 100-day daily practice of drawing humans, so she can use images of people as an from a quilting book and layered it with a girl standing on a jetty.” When she isn’t painting, Demarco enjoys spending time with her husband and two chil dren, Chi Chi and Louie. She teaches an ‘art as meditation’ class at bridge Wellness Center in m armora, along with other small workshops on select weekends. She will be selling her work at the Lang’s Garden Center Art in the Garden event on Sept. 18 in Linwood. “Ocean City is about mak ing memories with kids as you walk down the boardwalk, taking pictures of seagulls,” said Demarco. “ the pink summer sky, like cotton candy, is only sweet when you experience it on occasion, just like sum mer.”For any aspiring artists, De m arco recommends spending time trying to find your artistic voice, consid ering what subject matter you are drawn to, and even attempting a 100-day chal lenge to improve a specific skill.“b e willing to practice, and determine whether you want to create art for others, or for yourself as a meditation,” said Demarco. By Steffen Klenk

W hat started as an idea to visit every mini golf establishment on the Ocean City board walk has turned in to a magnificent adventure. For a quick recap, Sarah Fertsch and I began our journey at Congo Falls, which was followed by m edieval Fantasy and their mesmer izing blacklight rooms, and Seaport Village’s replica of the famed Sindia shipwreck. tee t ime was a very stellar course with their mechanical creativity and cleanliness. this week, the journey concludes with just four courses left to com plete. this week, we started with a visit to Haunted Golf. While Sarah has ventured here before, this was my first time visiting and I did not know what to expect from the start. this course shares the same owners with Congo Falls and pirate Island Golf. Upon entry, you are greeted by a funny character named bones who will tickle your funny bone… no pun intended. the ominous portraits on the wall and 1920s ceiling tiles gives you the feeling of walking through the halls of a haunted mansion.

While the name Haunted Golf might sound scary, it is also deceiving. In fact, this course is far from fearsome at all. b y the time you reach hole number 3, you walk into a black light room, where flickering chandeliers dangle over your head, as ghostly characters come to life, complete to a soundtrack of the most popular hits from every decade. When entering the next corridor, taxi dermy watches the gameplay from above. As you move through some of the rooms, motion sensors will play recorded banter and jokes. there are two more rooms, where a ghoul bride and groom are prepar ing to wed, while an elephant leaves behind several “obstacles” along the playing surface. You will then enter what we dubbed as the “boiler room.” make your way to the eighteenth hole and you are greeted by a headless bellhop who thanks you for your vis it. be sure to drop your golf ball into the peg slot for your chance at a free game.Overall, Sarah and I really enjoyed Haunted Golf with the layout and theme changes as you walk through the different rooms. One of the best parts about this course, besides the creativity, is that it is 100% air con ditioned. If you need a break from the heat of the day, this might be the perfect place for you. And in case you need a little mini-golf fix, this place is open during the winter months as well. Sarah gave Haunted Golf a score of 8.5, while I rate this course an 8.6. Next in line is p irates of the Golden Galleon, just one block from playland’s Castaway Cove. We

entered through the port side and were greeted to a delightfully cheery parrot named Chief, who told some very “punny” jokes. the clubs are very easy to handle, and shinier compared to many of the other courses. If you have been to Seaport Village, you will notice some similarities right off the bat. the course itself is not very challenging and there are immense opportunities to earn several holesin-one.the ocean theme is very much alive and well here, with the entire pirates of the Caribbean Soundtrack ablaze from the pA system, and an enormous peg-legged pirate ob serving the playing surface. While you won’t get to walk the plank, you do get to enter the bowels of a ship. While we had slight difficulty maneu vering around some of the obstacles and multiple entry points, Sarah and I had a very pleasant experience. What we did not realize after en tering is that there are two courses here. As mentioned previously, we went through the port entrance, but you can also walk over to the Starboard entrance. Since these courses share the same space, there are going to be many similarities. the Starboard side has a generally easy layout and large orange octopus. At $7 per person during non-peak hours, the pricing here is reasonable. Finally, we reached the final course of the evening: Solomon’s m ine at Congo Falls Adventure Golf. Having already played two of the three courses here, it felt like we already knew what we were walking into, and our instincts proved correct. the gen eral feel and layout are very similar to Congo Queen. the holes are not overly challenging and, aside from being partially inside, there wasn’t any noticeable differentiation in the theming or music selection. And alas, our mini golf journey has come to an end… or has it? Were there any courses that we missed? Is there an establishment that is far more superior than the ones we ven tured to? If you have any suggestions on where we should visit next, send your recommendations to shorelocal news@gmail.com. Also, if you enjoyed this series and want to see more re views just like this, please let us know. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I found the dip to be the most exciting part of the experience. If you go tandem, come to an agreement with your partner on your preferences. We chose the mid-level dip, and the photos of our shocked faces are priceless. parasailing makes for a one-in-alifetime memory for anniversaries, retirement parties, or vacations. On our boat, an aunt and her goddaugh ter celebrated her 16th birthday with the parasailing trip, and she loved it. Once both groups safely landed back on the boat, we sped back to the dock and met with the rest of our party to eat breakfast. We scrolled through the photos and laughed at our reactions. hen you picture a sea side cottage, it’s hard to imagine the weath ered, gray, cedar shingles of the house without the blue and pink flowers of hydran geas adding subtle color to the scene. Up and down the coast, hydrangeas give that nostalgic sense of comfort when returning home after a long journey away. A few years ago, an old high school friend of my husband came to visit. Unfortunately, life had seemed to give him a jaded outlook on life. but I noticed as he walked up our sidewalk and through the front door, he gave a little pause and remarked about the hydrangeas, which seemed to beckon him back to his childhood, when life was more relaxed and care free on the sandy beaches of South Jersey.Hydrangeas grow very well here, with our temperate weather and well-drained sandy soils along the shore. they are happiest with morning sun and afternoon shade.

If you have hydrangeas in your own garden, you’ve already cap tured a little piece of that coastal hospitality. but you may wish you had more of a good thing. If you have a favorite hydrangea that you wish you could clone, you are in luck, because hydran geas are easy to propagate from cuttings. Don’t be scared off by what sounds like a high-level gardening project. p ropagation simply means increasing the number of plants— something most gar deners can fully support. taking cuttings is one of the easiest methods of propagation. A little snip, snip, and you’re on your way to multiplying your flowers.much as we hate to admit it, fall is on the horizon. but the remain ing warm days (though not heat waves) will provide your cuttings with a nice humid environment to grow, and give your cuttings time to establish good roots be fore the harsh reality of winter sets in. For best results, make sure your hydrangea plant has been well-wa tered hours before you are taking the cuttings. take a 4 to 6 inch cutting of 34

Remove all leaves except a few at the top. If the leaves are large, cut them in half to conserve energy for your hydrangea cutting.

a healthy, non-flowering tender green stem. You’ll want to cut just below a lower set of leaf nodes. remove the leaves at the nodes. this is where your new roots will form. remove all of the other leaves except those at the very top of your cutting. If the top leaves are very large, cut them in half. It’s a bit of a balancing act. You need some leaves for the plant to grow, but too many leaves (or leaves that are too large) will draw energy away from the cutting’s ability to produce roots. At this point, you can dip the stem into rooting hormone (found on-line or at some gardening cen ters). this will encourage root growth and speed up the process, but is not a necessary step. time to plant your cutting. Use a container that has a lot of holes for good drainage to avoid root rot. Fill the container with potting soil or a soilless mix of sand, perlite, and vermiculite. personally, I keep things simple and use potting soil. Whatever you choose to use, make sure the mix is well watered before planting the cutting. Use a pencil to make a hole in the soil and insert the cutting, firming the soil around the stem. then place a large baggy around the pot to main tain a moist environment. Keep your planted cutting out of direct sunlight, so you don’t fry it under the bag. If you see any signs of mold, lift the baggy to allow some air circulation. Do not allow the cutting to dry out, but don’t water so much that it gets soggy.Ina few weeks, you should see signs of growth and root develop ment. You can give a slight tug to the cutting. A little resistance may mean that roots have started to form. If you are an impatient gardener that wants to see quick results, consider planting your cutting in a clear container so you can be gratified with the sight of beautiful roots of success. As the cut ting begins to grow, you can remove the plastic covering and eventually graduate the plant to a larger pot. Growing plants from cuttings is an easy, inexpensive way to multiply your plants. Once you get the hang of it, trade cuttings with friends to increase your variety of plants. this is also a great way to preserve plants when a relative sells their property but doesn’t want to dig up the gar den. You can keep your Aunt Hazel’s prized plants or your great-grand mother’s beloved flowers to pass on to the next generation. When my friend esther grew hydrangeas from cuttings, she called them “sticks”. She took a bunch of cuttings and planted them in a bit of a spiral or circle. Once they grew, they formed one mature-looking plant. At that time, I thought she was some kind of gardening magician. Now some of her magic is growing in my own garden. By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer lmost every flower is in full bloom. From lilies to mums, gardens are bursting with life in this one special moment where summer and fall overlap. How can we preserve these flowers and their beauty? One trendy way to take advan tage of these blooms is by crafting flow er crowns. this midsommar staple has peaked in popularity in the 60s and 70s among hippies and in the 21st century for brides and little princesses. these stunning accessories can be made fairly simply with few sup plies. Challenge yourself to limit your florsal selection to your garden, or visit a local florist for specific greens and colors. Invite your nieces, sisters, and friends to a flower party with tea and pastries. And when each crown has been made, do a photoshoot modeling your creations under the September sun. Here’s how you can make a flower crown: sure plant so facing stem

Materials: ● 18-inch lengths of floral wire (2 per crown) ● pruners or wire cutters ● 3-inch lengths of floral wire (perhaps 20 per crown) ● Floral tape ● Various flowers of all shapes, colors and styles ● Greenery like ivy or teucalyptusaketwo18-inch wires and twist the ends around each other, forming a cir cle. m ake

Continue to add flowers to the crown, repeating step #2. Fill the crown with flowers and greens, covering any exposed wire with floral tape. to preserve your flower crown, you can either choose to keep your flowers soft and lively, or dry the flowers to last for years to come. For the first option, line a pie tin with damp paper towels or rags. place the flower crown in the tin and cover with additional layers of damp towels. refrigerate for up to three days. to dry your flowers, consider which types of blooms you include in your crown. Lavender, rosemary and roses preserve well and hold up over years, offering strong floral scents. Hang your flower crown in any room without rustling or touching it for a few weeks. When dried completely, the crown will become very delicate, so don’t irritate it too much.

I n a recent column, I talked about the importance of surrounding yourself with a great “team” per sonally and professionally if you want to succeed. And I said one of the key members of that team is a men tor, either someone you can contact or someone you can read about and study. either way, the best way to move your life forward as you and I head into the fall is to surround ourselves with like-minded individuals. As I study successful people, one of the things I’ve seen that is common to everyone one of them is their daily discipline. this really all begins with developing systems in their personal and professional life that ensure that they see growth and progress in what ever they are seeking to achieve. It could be systems that help them in their relationships with family mem bers as well as strategies at work. the reality is there are as many systems out there as there are needs for these systems. So,how do you know what’s right for you? b ecause the system you choose to implement has to work for you, has to work in your situation or it's of no use. It’s not enough to have a system, you have to own that system. It all comes down to design. What intentional steps are you taking to design a path to where you want to go. It is true that the secret of your success, the secret of my success is found in our daily routine. In Gary Keller's book, the One thing, Keller talks about what’s known as the pa reto principle. You might know it as the 80/20 principle. to summarize the principle, it simply says that a minority of what we do produces a majority of results or output. You can apply it elsewhere. You’ve probably all heard it said that 80 percent of the work is accomplished by 20 percent of the people. So in the case of designing our desired path, we can spend time outside of a system or even within a system concentrating on a hundred different things. b ut the reality is if we focus or fixate our attention on a small amount of what really produces the best results or outcome, we will be much more successful. but Keller takes this principle even further In fact, he applied it to his own business of building his real estate empire Keller Williams. He says take that 20 percent and keep chipping away so that like the title of his book, you narrow down to the ON e tHING that will have the greatest impact on whatever it is you want to accomplish and then focus on that. my challenge to you this week, as you look at your personal and pro fessional goals, what is the one thing you can fixate on that will bring you the greatest return? Now go for it.

The Right Notes 2022 – Honoring Jayne Bray

Michael Bray is the founder of and director of operations at Passion Vines Wine & Spirit Company in Somers Point and Egg Harbor Township. He serves on numerous local boards.

By Michael Bray W hile some funtheSeptemberconsidertomarkendofsummerattheshore, there are still plenty of reasons to visit this time of year. With its beautiful weath er, lighter traffic, and abundance of festivals and events, September is one of my favorite months to be a Jersey Shore resident. I’d like to take this opportunity to share some information about one of my favorite annual fundraising events: the right Notes, presented by the Donovan Financial Group of U bS Financial Services. t he right Notes is South Jersey’s fight against multiple sclerosis, and it will be held on thursday, September 22 at Greate bay Country Club in Somers point. this year marks the 8th production of the right Notes and 10 years since the event’s inception in 2012. to date, the generous support of event at tendees and donors has allowed the right Notes to raise over $500,000 to benefit the National multiple Scle rosis Society and those living with mS in our local community. the right Notes is very personal for me. m y m om, Jayne b ray, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1990, and finding a cure for m S has been the charitable focus of passion Vines since we first opened our doors. this debilitating neurological disease moved my mom from a cane, to a walker, and ultimately to a wheelchair. these circumstanc es, despite their challenges, never led Jayne to a space of negativity. rather, she chose Grace – which was visible and felt by everyone she met. In June of 2022, Jayne passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family. Jayne leaves us with many beauti ful stories, and a legacy of kindness, compassion, and gratitude. As her friends will attest, Jayne was a deep listener, and she happily gave the gift of mindfulness and attention to ev eryone who had the good fortune to be in her presence. because of Jayne, the right Notes was born. this year, the 10th anniversary of the event’s founding, we will celebrate Jayne’s beautiful life and legacy by continuing our mission of making a positive im pact and working to find a cure. t he r ight Notes is produced collaboratively by the National m S Society, passion Vines, and Greate bay Country Club, and it remains the only fundraising event of its kind in South Jersey. the main feature of the evening is a large-scale wine tasting, including more than 100 top-scoring wines from around the world. to complement the impressive wine offerings, the event also includes a prominent selection from acclaimed breweries and distilleries. t he ad dition of artisanal food, live music, and amazing auctions makes for a truly remarkable and unforgettable evening.thefunds raised at t he r ight Notes benefit ongoing mS research and support the more than 400 peo ple living with mS in Atlantic and Cape may Counties through the Society’s mS Navigator program. this program connects patients and caretakers with information, education, support, and resources to help navigate the challenges of living with m S. Over the past two years, the m S Society received more than 450 requests for information, financial assistance, and services from our community through the Navigator program. If you are able to join us for this year’s production of the right Notes, please stop and say hello. I would be honored to connect, and I’d be happy to provide some tips to guide you through the evening. It can be intimi dating to enter a room with over 100 fabulous wines to taste (although I’d definitely categorize this as a good problem to have!), and I’ll be happy to share some of the insight I’ve learned over the years. As a recap, here are the event details:Date: thursday, September 22 Start time: 6pm for VIp Admission; 7pm for General Admission Location: Greate b ay Country Club, 901 Somers point mays Landing road, Somers point to purchase tickets or to make a donation, please visit www.Na tionalmSSociety.org/ therightNotes From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your time and reader ship. A s I write this, the ea gles are working to cut down their roster from 80 players to the final 53-man roster. even then, when I write the word “final”, it’s not really final, as several teams are always known to look for freeagent talent out there after they ini tially pick a 53-man roster. plus, don’t forget about the practice squad. this season, NFL teams will be able to have 16 players on their practice squad. the number went up from 14 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

● As far as the final preseason game goes in miami, can we just cut the preseason down to t WO games? the preseason has become irrel evant. I understand that coaches around the NFL don’t want to get their stars hurt. many teams have gone toward these “open practice”

You’ll notice that the headline above reads “Avoid the turk”. For those of you who don’t follow NFL football, just who is the turk?

● Let’s begin with the eagles as they work to shape their opening day 53-man roster. Without having to attempt to discuss anything too time sensitive, I feel safe in saying that Howie roseman will be burn ing up the phones trying to put together the best 53-man group he can find. What’s interesting about the NFL to me, is that even when you’re cut, a team usually still has interest in you and wants to try and “sneak” you through to the practice squad.

“ the turk” is the NFL's version of the Grim reaper. He is the individual assigned by the team who is respon sible for tracking down players and explaining to them that they are being released. In the old days, this used to be with the phrase “Coach wants to see you, and bring your playbook!” Now, it probably is “Coach wants to see you, and bring your ipad”. either way, you want to avoid “ the turk”.

'Avoid the Turk'

I’ll write in more detail about the eagles opening day 53-man roster next time, when it’s absolutely locked in, but for now, since I last wrote, the b irds went through a stinker of a preseason finale in miami. plus, find out why eagles Qb Jalen Hurts is teaming up with tony the tiger from Frosted Flakes. In base ball, the phillies head on a West Coast trip full of optimism, but could this trip end up a disaster? Also, a rare baseball card that was just on display in Atlantic City last month goes at auction for a record amount. In golf, there are some more major defections to the new LIV tour. A women’s tennis legend gets a proper reception at the U.S. Open in Flushing m eadow. Finally, on the local front, a football coach is honored by his former players & colleagues. plus, the battle at the beach at Ocean City High School is a rousing success.

● Cristopher Sanchez could only get two outs as he gave up FIVe runs. Andrew bellatti was just as bad as he went 1.2 innings, walking three and giving up another run. How bad was it? In the 4th and 5th in ning alone, the phillies relief guys allowed 12 runs, gave up 8 hits, walked 6, faced 22 hitters, and threw 71 pitchers. that’s about as bAD as it gets, and probably the biggest reason I think why l folks still aren’t “buying in”.

t he “crown jewel” of that event was a 1952 topps m ickey m antle rookie card in darn near mint con dition. Well, that card has now sold for $12.6 million at auction, which makes it the most valuable piece of sports memorabilia ever to be sold at auction. Wow. I was tHAt close to a $12 million baseball card…! (pro tected by guards and behind glass)

● Smith, 29, is No. 2 in the Official World Golf ranking and won the 150th Open Championship at St. ↘Continued on 44 Serena Williams - the GOAT Someone from NY paid $12.6 million for this baseball card

● my last eagles item is about Jalen Hurts. everyone wants him to step up and be a franchise Q b . Well, if the criteria was based on communi ty service, he’d be the GOAt. Hurts recently stopped by a middle-school flag football game to be the “coach”. It was an organized event, as Kel logg’s, which makes Frosted Flakes and other cereals, donated $75,000 from its mission tiger program to the philadelphia School District to help start six flag-football teams for girls and restart three rookie tackle teams — a program that in structs players on the fundamentals of of the game — for boys. I can only imagine the faces on the teenagers when Jalen Hurts surprised them to be their “coach”. Footage of Sun day’s game will air as a story during CbS Sports coverage of NFL games in the season that starts next week.

● Somehow, the phils managed to blow an early 7-zip lead to the Diamondbacks as they fell 13-7 in Game 1 of their series in Arizona. ranger Suarez just lost it as he was cruising until the 4th inning when the wheels fell off. Jean Se gura had an error that didn’t help, but the story of this loss was the bullpen.

● One more baseball item. Do you remember the National Sports Collectors Convention that was in Atlantic City a few weeks back?

● Speaking of big money, here’s an item from golf. right now, the pGA tour should be celebrating that ro ry m cIlroy won the season-ending Fede x Cup Championship and the $18 million first prize. However, they are dealing with more defections to the LIV Golf as Open Championship winner Cameron Smith headlines a group of five more players leaving for the start-up circuit with no cuts, big money and Saudi backing.

● Now, to baseball, where I am ex asperated by the phillies as I write this. Sure, they have a slim lead over the padres for the second NL Wild card playoff spot, and they have a decent lead over the brewers, who currently are on the outside looking in. b ut….but…. bUt….beat the bad teams! ● t he phillies slipped up and lost 5-zip on their way out of town when Noah Syndergaard had a bad start against the pirates at Citizens bank park on Sunday 8-28. Hey, that happens. b ut, they followed it up with a historic loss in Arizona that has me concerned big-time!

● I’m worried this trip might be come a disaster, after two more in Arizona, they go and see former phillies manager Gabe Kapler in San Francisco. the phillies have N eVer played well in the bay Area, and I hope that changes on this trip. Stay tuned.

formats where they go against their upcoming opponent and get controlled work in that way. but, you can’t monetize a practice, so I think the stinky preseason football is here to stay! Unfortunately.

● In other big national news, tennis star Serena Williams received a cel ebration “fit for a queen”, after her first round win in the U.S. Open in New York. Williams has said she will retire whenever her “run is done” in Queens, and she certainly was hon ored for all her accomplishments the other night. e S pN National Columnist Howard b ryant writes, “after 27 years, 23 singles majors, 14 in doubles, two more in mixed doubles, and, for good measure, four Olympic gold medals -- the air around her has been awash in nothing but sentiment. Nearly 30 years a professional, Williams rep resents the individual as a dynasty, spanning six presidents, playing in parts of four decades. For her fans who were there from the start, her time, from braces to baby, has been theirs, time and age creating nostalgia and reflection for her and themselves.” I’ll just add on top of that and write that I’m glad Serena got her night the other night and was properly honored after a win instead of a loss.

Andrews in July. Chile's Joaquin Niemann (the 19th-ranked player in the world), Harold Varner III (No. 46), Cameron tringale (No. 55), Australia's marc Leishman (No. 62) and India's Anirban Lahiri (No. 92) are also joining LIV Golf, which is being financed by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund.

● Here’s my take on LIV Golf. I will never watch a minute of that cov erage. even if they get a regular t V network deal, I simply cannot support watching a tour that is sup ported by money from Saudi Arabia. I understand the people that think the pGA tour is out of touch and their methods are antiquated, but I guess, so am I. I’m 51-years-old, and I will NOt….repeat NOt….watch LIV Golf, and you can hold me to that!

● As always, I’ll close with some local items, and start with Lou paludi. the former Holy Spirit coach and temple star was surrounded by some of “his boys” recently at the back bay Ale House in Atlantic City. According to Frank Finnerty’s post on social media, here’s the Lou palu di Holy Spirit High School Coaching tree. Kevin Corcoran, All-Star back at HSHS and coach of St. Joe. rick Guerrieri, All-Star back at HSHS and coach at Holy Spirit as well. terry bradway, Holy Spirit Q b , G m of the NY Jets & Kansas City Chiefs. bob Coffey, All-Star back at HSHS and Head Coach of the state champion mainland mustangs. Dr. Fred Dalzell, Holy Spirit Qb , princeton University Qb and 40 plus years as HSHS team physician, Stan b ergman, HSHS crew & football coach, University of penn crew coach & Hall of Fame, bob Garbutt, ACHS crew champi onship teams, HSHS football coach, Jim Gallagher, HSHS championship teams, former coach of Sterling football. ed byrnes, legendary HSHS Coach, and Finnerty. Woah. that’s a lot of pedigree. All off the LOU pALUDI Coaching tree…! ● And finally, I have to acknowledge the 2nd annual “ b attle at the beach” at Carey Stadium in Ocean City. 11 games, 22 teams over three days and there’s no question that this event is already a HUG e suc cess. Locally, m ainland got a nice win, Holy Spirit edged out Cherokee with a walk-off field goal, and mill ville looked real good. Ocean City, St. Augustine & Cedar Creek all fought hard, and hope to improve in their following game. b ut I can tell you that John emel, who’s the president of the WJFCA, is already putting the finishing touches on N eX t year’s event. Stay tuned.

t’s common for a reputable breeder to keep a waiting list, require you to fill out an application, or take a deposit. b reeders who are breeding healthy dogs put a tremendous amount of effort into their litters so trusting you with a puppy is a big deal. A good breeder trains and social izes your puppy from the moment it is born. Going to a reputable breeder gives you the best chance of getting a puppy that will have a long and healthy life. If you are tempted by a webpage that promises a puppy today, beware. they are most likely a puppy mill or simply in it for the money with little regard for the health and welfare of their puppies. Here are a few other red flags to be aware of when looking for a purebred puppy. Avoid “fad” or “rare colors.” there is no such color as a “silver” Labrador retriever. the Labrador Club of Amer ica believes that this color is a result of mixing the Weimaraner with a Lab. the original creation of this color came from a few Lab breeders who also happened to breed the Weima raner. they claimed that silver is a diluted chocolate, but genetic tests have shown that the silver gene does not occur in chocolate. “ english Cream” Goldens are not worth more money because of the color. It’s still just a Golden with a dilutedFrenchcoat.bulldogs are not supposed to have wire hair or come in the blue m erle or black and tan colors. Any one breeding these “rare” colors has mixed another dog with a Frenchie. blue eyes are not naturally occur ring in many breeds, so do not get duped into paying extra for these colors by a backyard breeder who is selling them as “rare” and therefore for more money. t he majority of these rare colors or blue eyes result in expensive skin issues or eye surger ies. “ teacup” anything is just a super small dog. b e very careful about to whom and where you send your money. I know the prospect of getting that cute little puppy they have posted is tempting, but there are countless stories of people sending a depos it via social media for a puppy and never hearing from the “breeder” again. I would never give my money to someone I have not actually had a conversation with or met. When I am screening a home for a puppy I do an extensive search of the person and where my puppy will live. You should do the same when looking for a breeder. I have had two clients purchase what they thought were white b ulldogs off of the Internet, only to have completely different puppies shipped to them. One puppy arrived with serious kennel cough, requiring hospitalization after which the owner was ghosted by the “breeder.” the other has detached retinas, which will require expensive surgery to repair. When I checked out the breeder of these poor puppies, I saw that the pictures on the web page were stolen from other good b ulldog breeders, and the unsuspecting owners were fooled. there is little to no recourse when this happens. A good breeder will always want their puppy back if you are not satisfied. It is OK to ask for things in writing and ask for a receipt when sending a deposit. A good breeder will most likely be doing all that anyway. Next time, I will give you 101 rea sons to avoid the Amish puppy mill. F all is in the air. Family and friends will soon gather around the television or tailgate their favorite foot ball team. Football season can be a difficult time for those on diets. trying to get away from the smoked brisket, loaded potatoes and sliders stacked high is always a challenge when you've adopted a healthier and cleaner way of eating. It’s never about saying “no” to foods and events. I teach my clients to find a balance between making changes and indulging once in a while. most of my clients find that if they break their diet, it upsets their mindset. they feel like they have failed if they fall off the wag on. However, you can always get right back on! One day doesn’t permanently upset the whole diet. b ringing the host a dish will not only be a wonderful gift but can also help you stay on plan, even through a challenging time. Here are some great ideas for dishes to bring: red bell pep per with guacamole, apples, fruit and peanut butter. You could also snack on kale chips or sweet potato fries. Another idea is dark chocolate and almonds. b ringing a big green salad loaded with beautiful colors is not on ly a great choice but very impressive to look at. Whole wheat pizza is fun to make for the crowd on the grill. You can be included in the fun and save the waistline at the same time. the number one food consumed at football tailgating and parties is chicken wings. t hey can be made as healthy or as unhealthy as you choose. t he biggest issue with calories is the sauce the wings are dressed with. Wings can be a great, healthy choice if baked. enjoy my healthy recipe from my cookbook “Nancy’s recipes for Life,” available at my Linwood office location and Capellas Oil and Vinegar store in Ocean City.

Back to School Packed Lunches to Make the First Week More Bearable

By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer S ummer has come and gone. As the cooler weather arrives, children are headed back to school. New backpacks and pencils have been purchased, school buses have begun to make their rounds through neighborhoods, and teachers have decorated their class rooms with incredible detail. m ost adults will remember vividly making new friends in the cafeteria. the meal break gives kids of all ag es the opportunity to connect with their new peers. packed lunches are not only less expensive than schoolbought lunches, but they also provide a window into your child’s likes and dislikes.Learning requires high levels of mental clarity and energy, so when you are preparing your child’s lunch, ensure that they are consuming plen ty of vitamins and minerals. protein, the building block of the body, keeps tummies full and satisfied for hours. Carbohydrates, particularly whole grains and fruits, are metabolized to energize a person all day long. If you pack unhealthy foods or not enough calories, your child may be distracted by hunger and unable to focus on ge ography or spelling. the most popular type of packed lunch is a sandwich as the main course with snacks as sides. If you decide to make a sandwich, incorpo rate some form of protein like pea nut butter, turkey, ham, or tofu. Add cheese, bananas, mayo or mustard as well as some leafy greens to bulk up the sandwich. Consider what kind of bread you are using, because whole grain bread or pitas will be more fill ing than plain white bread. Sandwiches can be a little too basic, so shake it up with another main dish for your child’s lunch. try building a salad with grilled chicken or chickpeas, fruits and veggies, cheese, crunchy nuts or croutons, and a flavorful dressing. If your child has access to a microwave, pack chili, leftover pasta, or pizza slices. Just like adults, kids deserve variety in theirLet’smeals!talk about the sides. pre packaged chips and cookies may seem like an easy option, but these high-calorie, high-sugar choices will cause your kid to crash by the end of the day. Consider pairing a pretzel or fruit with a high-protein dip. I rec ommend whole-grain crackers and hummus, tortilla chips and salsa, or strawberries with Nutella. A little dessert will go a long way and make your child excited to dig into their lunch. Small dark-chocolate bars, yogurt-covered pretzels, choco late-covered almonds, or an oatmeal cookie are sustainable, healthy choic es with a hint of sweetness. When I was in middle school, my mom would pack me a dollar for the ice cream vending machine in our lunchroom, and I would look forward to my ice cream sandwich or Nutty b uddy all morning.Don’tforget about drinks! Water is always a good option, but if your child has gym class or an active recess,

they may benefit from electrolytes in drinks like Gatorade or Vitamin Wa ter. Sparkling Water will hydrate your little one while giving them some pep with the carbonation. Juices tend to be high in sugar, so don’t pack Capri Suns or apple juice every day. Here is an example of a healthy lunch your child will love: Charcuterie Kabobs Ingredients: ● One round of salami, sliced thickly ● Cubed cheddar ● red grapes ● Skewers ● 1 cucumber, sliced ● ⅛ cup of hummus ● Chocolate pudding cup with a spoon ● 1 can of sparkling water prep all produce and cut salami andOncheese.two6-inch skewers, alternate sliding cheese, salami and grapes until the skewer is fully covered. Wrap in foil or place in tupperware. Spoon hummus into a container and cover with a lid. pack cucumbers in a sandwich bag. place pudding, spoon and spar kling water in the lunchbox. Add an ice pack and hand it off to your child. enjoy! 53September 1, 2022

f you thought moving into your 900-square-foot apartment was tough, moving into your first home is an even greater chal lenge.Itis an exciting time, but it’s also hard to make the transition into your first home, knowing what items should be replaced and what needs to be pur chased to fill a larger space. First-time homebuyers should keep these moving tips in mind for a smooth transition: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask For Help Chances are, as a first-time buyer, you don't have an overabundance of items to pack up. Unless you have been renting for more than a decade, it’s best to think minimally when moving into a home for the first time. the prospect of packing up (espe cially if it is just you) can feel pretty intimidating, so consider hiring profes sionals if it becomes too overwhelming. there are plenty of reasonable busi nesses out there, plus you may be able to secure a deal if your possessions fall under a certain space limit. Map It Out Whether you consider yourself a planner or not, moving is one thing that you can't do on the fly and hope for the best. You need to plan. You can start by taking a picture of each room in your current space to remember how you have items orga nized. You won't be able to replicate every area in your new home (nor would you likely want to), but this can help you keep track of what fits together, and where.Itis also a good idea to look at the floorplan of your new home and map out where the biggest items will go so you know exactly where to put them on move-in day. Start With the Biggest Projects You can't fit a square peg into a round hole, and the same goes for the moving process. If you fill every room with all of your smaller items before moving the big stuff, you will end up running out of space quickly. Sofas, lounge chairs, large appliances and the like should be moved first, before the rest of the decorating process begins. You will have plenty of time to add the finishing touches.

Moving tips for firsttime homebuyers

Give Yourself Time t hink you can move in one day? think again. First, spending weeks of your life in limbo between your old space and your new space would be miserable and trying to cram weeksworth of moving into 24 hours is pretty much impossible. If you feel rushed, you are bound to make mistakes or forget something es sential. taking your time is a much more realistic approach to having a successful transition.enjoyYour Labor Day Weekend! t’s over. the summer I had been wait ing for this past, seemingly eternal, winter is over. While winter clung on tenaciously, I vowed not to complain about the heat when summer arrived, and yet the heat and humidity had me yearning for its end. Oscar Wilde wrote, “Conversa tion about the weather is the last refuge of the unimaginative.” I must travel in a circle of the most unimaginative people on the planet. Strangers have blurted out to me about the humidity as if they were making an admission of guilt. Cashiers at the super market, nurses in doctors’ offices, tellers in banks- and these are people working inside! In my travels, I see roofers, construction workers, and landscapers working while they have sweated through their clothing, and yet push on. Land breezes add gnats, black flies, and mosquitoes to the steamy cauldron. A couple toll takers, when greet ed with a rather insincere, “how ya doing” responded with a tirade about the heat and humidity as I smiled and rolled the window back up, lest I let the cool air escape. Living at the beach, summer used to mean time off from scholastic obligations, surfing, beach boys music, and summer jobs with minimal expectations. but either the summers have been more brutal, or I have been less able to manage the heat. I think more the latter since a couple years ago, a hot steamy round of golf ended after only nine holes, with me sitting on the cart path unable to get up unassisted. I am looking forward to the fall with the same anticipation that summer used to hold for me. I can again partake in vigorous outdoor activities without the concern that strangers might be applying cool compresses to my neck and wrists… again. We can visit our favorite restaurants which we left to the tourists since memorial Day weekend, and calling for a delivery won’t take over a hour. the traffic lights on Atlan tic Avenue in margate and Ventnor will be returned to their yellow blinking status, and I won’t have to stop for beachgoers crossing the road strung out like slow geese. Sure, there’s no rush. Ignore the fact that if I am in a car, there is someplace I have to be, too. I won’t miss that. Oktoberfests and other fall celebrations are just on the horizon, and a great way to pass time instead of passing out. the fall rowing regattas will be starting up in earnest and whole weekends can be spent on the banks of rivers enjoying warm drinks, hot soups, and great racing by rowers of all ages. I say to no one in particular that next year will be my year on the water just as I said last year. but this time I really mean it. Still, it’s only the beginning of September and I am not ready to give up the beach just yet. the water will stay warm for some weeks to come and finding a quiet stretch of sand is going to be much easier. Added to our beach bag of towels, sunscreen, books, etc. will be a long sleeve t-shirt or hoodie for those late afternoon stretches. All in all, I will lament the passing of summer, as uncomfortable as it was at times, for it signifies the passage of time. And, at some inevitable point, I will be bracing myself against the cold and looking forward to another summer.

Views from the Shore

everal years ago, I was asked to take a photo for a press release announcing that the Greate b ay Women's Golf Association was donating more than $50,000 to Shore Cancer Center to help offset the expenses for local women battling cancer. the G bW GA raised this incredible amount of money from their "Swing" golf tour nament, and it is extremely generous of the members of the G bWGA to volunteer and work so hard to pro vide this Whenfunding.Iarrived at Greate b ay Country Club to take the photo, I had the privilege of meeting Sue Webb. Sue was the chairperson of the Swing Golf tournament committee, and out of respect for her, I wanted to make sure she was front and center in the photo.Sue told me that she appreciated that gesture but said that the tourna ment wasn't about her – and that the focus should 100 percent be on the Association members and the women that the donation would help. She told me that day that she was thrilled because they were all volun teers, and every dollar raised directly helped women in our community in need. "Some need help with their bills, some with transportation and others for wigs. It's for whatever is necessary to help relieve some of the stress for women in their fight against cancer." She was very humble and very proud of her fellow G bWGA mem bers. In four years, they raised more than $250,000 from the Swing tour nament. the donations were made to the Auxiliary of Shore medical Center, which in turn donates it to Shore Cancer Center. the dollars are then earmarked to be used exclusively to help female cancer patients. Sadly, Sue passed away on July 14, 2020. After two years, her partner and wife of 23 years, pat Cowan, is now committed to resuming the Swing tournament in her honor. "Sue would want to carry this on," said pat. "I have so many handwritten thank you notes and stories from women we've helped. I could not save Sue, but if I can help improve the quality of life for just one person, it's all worth it." the 2022 G bWGA's Swing Golf tournament will be held on thursday, September 29, at Greate bay Country Club in Somers point, with registra tion and a bbQ lunch beginning at 1 pm. For sponsorship and participa tion, contact Lisa Ditroia, Director of the Auxiliary for Shore m edical Cen ter, at lditroia@shoremedicalcenter. org or call 609-653-4646. Brian Cahill is the Director of Marketing for Shore Medical Cen ter and Shore Physicians Group. He is also on the Board of the Somers Point Business Association, an Adjunct Professor in the School of Business at Stockton Univer sity, and is a founding member of Somers Point-Community First, a local volunteer organization.

Now, the celebration has strayed from its original roots. back in the late 1800’s, major corporations had worked their way into the upper ranks of the US federal government. this corruption caused great division among the American people of the day who watched companies get larger and larger while individuals often suffered through long work days and work weeks for little pay. the increasing mistreatment of the workers by the corporations caused protests and riots among the people. these working- class folks were then shut down at the hands of US marshals and other peacekeeping units. this led to a political movement among the working-class people, backed by the New York City labor unions. In order to appease the growing class of working class Americans, president Grover Cleveland had Labor Day introduced as a federal holiday. It passed in six days. 61September 1, 2022

here has been a buzz in the media that we are currently in a "housing recession". even the National Association of realtors' Lawrence Yun used that ver biage a week or so ago. So, are we? Well, there is a big difference be tween housing activity and price reces sion versus an actual housing recession. there is no secret that housing activity has slowed, but the media should be more careful with their wording be cause home prices are still being sup ported by low levels of inventory and their demand is still very strong when homes are priced correctly and more realistically.Inventory has increased slightly from 1.26 million units to 1.31 million, but a smaller increase than expected and possibly starting to peak similar to the seasonal increases we see every year around this time. there is now a 3.3-month supply of homes when looking at the sales pace, which is tight because 6-months' worth of supply is considered a more balanced market. b ut let's take a closer look at the inventory picture. When looking at active listings there are only about 747,000, which means that 43% of the "inventory" which was recently released by the e xisting Home Sales report, is either under contract or not really avail able. this shows that demand is still very strong. In a more normalized market, only about 25% of "inventory" is usually underAlso, contract.whilemany outlets are saying homes are sitting longer on the market, the homes that are priced more realisti cally are selling very quickly. the existing Home Sales report showed that homes remained on the market on average for just a whopping 14 days! the Case Shiller home price index, which is seen as the gold standard for home price appreciation, showed that homes increased in price by 19.7 % from may 2021 to may 2022. Yes, this annual number dipped a little from around its peak of up 20.6%, but it is still very strong. We are certainly in a cooling mar ket where home pricing is normalizing, but demand is still very strong and this doesn't show that we are in an actual "housing recession". of Preplanning Your Funeral (part

By Andrew Hoffman A s I continue this series on preplanning funerals, keep in mind that each step you take makes life easier for your loved ones. So now you have had your discus sion with your family and the funeral di rector, so you are all on the same page. the funeral director will make a record of the choices that were made. this would include if the individual wanted to be buried or cremated. In regard to being buried, it would define what type of burial (traditional burial, Green b urial or entombment), where the burial would take place (cemetery or mausoleum). If there is to be a viewing and if so, is the person to be embalmed or not. It would also list for how long the viewing would be for, as an example a two hour viewing the night before at the funeral home and an hour viewing before the service. It would also list where the viewing and/or services are to be held meaning at the funeral home, church, cemetery or any other venue. the prearrangement will also have a record of the type of casket and if it is a burial in the ground. In regard to cremation, (if that is chosen) the prearrangement will define what type of cremation it is to be, meaning, a full-service cremation, cremation memorial service or direct cremation. If full-service cremation, just like a traditional service it will list where and for how long the viewing will be and where the service will take place and when and where the cremation will take place. For a cremation memorial service, the prearrangement will state if there is to be a time set aside for a visi tation either before or after the memo rial service, if at all. For all the different types of cremation the prearrangement will explain what is to be done with the ashes following the cremation and/or services itself. this can include burying the ashes, scattering the ashes, keeping the ashes or all three because ashes can be separated and different things can be done with each portion, but that is another article.

S outh Jersey is known for hav ing some unique and unusual roadside attractions. Nota ble examples include Lucy the elephant in margate, and mighty Joe, a 25 foot gorilla on route 206 in Shamong. to add to this list is a piece of history: the fifty ton 0-4-0 Diesel Locomotive in front of Atlantic County Harley-Davidson on the White Horse pike in Galloway. ben petrovic, the owner of the dealership, shared a wealth of information and stories about the journeys of this train. the train was built by the Amer ican Locomotive Company (ALCO) at their Cooke Works plant in 1918 and used by the United States Navy. It was primarily used as a yard train to maintain other trains and move heavy equipment within the philadelphia Navy Yard. the train was commis sioned by president Harry truman as a “Ghost train” to carry the remains of dead soldiers during WWI to areas such as Harrisburg, Newark, and points north. the engine was also responsible for help ing to build the battleship New Jersey. After it was decommis sioned, the train went up for auction. Under cover of dark ness and disguised as a chicken coop, the 50 ton locomotive was transported in a flatbed truck over the burlington- bris tol b ridge. It found its way to a New Jersey junkyard, along route 206 in b urlington County, where it sat for many years. A local businessman, George Seltzer, purchased the locomotive The train was built in 1918, an incredible milestone.

in the 1980s and brought it to his store, “ t he train Station,” on the White Horse pike, approximately one mile west of the parkway. Here, he sold train sets and model trains for children and enthusiasts. It sat prom inently on a thirty foot track in front of the store for a number of years. In 1996, the engine went up for sale. Originally, the asking price was $25,000. Instead, m r. petrovic, who had seen the train daily on his com mute to work, was offered the train as a trade for one of his new Harley bikes.the process for bringing the loco motive to the Harley dealer was no easy task. A team of highly-skilled con struction workers, road crews, movers and a rigger helped transport the ve hicle to its new home. It was moved one mile from the train Station to the front lawn of Atlantic County Harley Davidson. A short time afterward, the outside of the engine was re-painted with the AC Harley e xpress logo. the AC Harley e xpress is one of the great gems that make our area unique.

By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer f you ask anyone on the street, “What’s your purpose in life?”, answers may range from com mitting to religion to raising children. traveling across the world, making enough money to retire early, and love your neighbors may also be popular answers. but when it comes down to it, what does everyone really want? I can guarantee you that those lofty dreams can be diminished down to one word: happiness. the New York times reports that social scientists can predict health, longevity, career success and strong relationships based on anyone’s happiness index. Striving for overall happiness can lead to getting med icated for mental illness, starting a new exercise regimen, finding a new hobby, and developing morning rou tines. Happiness comes from within; any external motivation will quickly result in feeling empty.

researchers have concluded that Denmark over all countries is the happiest place on earth (sorry, Dis ney World). In her book “ the Year of Living Danishly,” journalist Helen russel writes that a couple of key aspects of life contribute to longterm happiness: countrywide social policies, commitment to relationships and fun, and prioritizing comfort over traditional success or standards. Let me explain further. Denmark considers itself a democratic nation with extensive social welfare policies. their high taxes fund programs that cover all education expenses from daycare to college, museum and movie theater access, 80% of your salary paid to you for up to two years if you quit or get fired from your job, and allowances for each household toward food, transportation costs, mortgages, and retirement. russell says that Danes don’t need to worry themselves with meeting their needs because they trust their government to take care of them. Secondly, Denmark highly values hobbies and after-work activities. From choirs to adult sports leagues to chess clubs, Danes have the op

In America, the average adult works 40-50 hours per week. In Denmark, adults work about 30 hours per week, with many of those hours dedicated to company parties, daily social lunch es, and team building games. Workers take long breaks for breakfast and lunch and reduce hours significantly in the summer so everyone can en joy “a holiday.” No one in Denmark is sweating at 1am on a tuesday night, stressed to the max over budget re ports or presentations. 'You cannot be serious'

Plus

I feel like that’s a perfect head line for this week’s column as it not only applies to the excellent Showtime documentary on John m cenroe that I’m planning to watch, but you could also apply it to the fact that Labor Day Weekend is already upon us. Where did the summer go? I’ll start by writing about “ m cen roe - the price of perfection” that will be streaming On Demand for Showtime subscribers Friday, Sept. 2, and will premiere Sunday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. et/pt on Showtime. According to t V Insider, the documentary from director barney Douglas is an inti mate, candid exploration of m cenroe as revealed by the man himself as he walks the New York City streets at night. Featuring home videos and previously unseen footage from his epic matches at the US Open and Wimbledon, m cenroe is a journey into the heart and soul of an athlete whose quest for perfection took him to some very dark places. “ thirty-seven psychologists and psychiatrists didn’t help,” m cenroe notes at one point in the doc, which sees him examine his memory to explore why a need for connection both drove him and nearly broke him. It also features contributions from his children and wife patty Smyth, to take it beyond a sports biopic and instead into the realms of something deeply confessional, as well as icons such as billie Jean King, bjorn borg, and Keith richards. “I was on such an unbelievable high,” m cenroe recalls of his time as the No. 1 player in the world. “Why does it not feel that amazing?” the 63-year-old mcenroe was one of my favorite players to watch grow ing up, and yes, I’m serious! I seriously cannot wait to watch this documen tary about the always entertaining John m Sincecenroe.Ibegan with streaming, I might as well continue in that realm and discuss a few new things that are out, starting with “ the Lord of the rings: the rings of power” on Ama zon prime. After years of production, this new epic series finally begins on thursday September 1st on Amazon prime. the budget is said to be twice the amount that was spent on the en tire Lord of the rings film trilogy. the last of those three films took home best picture at the Oscars. plus, keep in mind that there are already dragons flying all over the place at HbO, which wisely premiered its “Game of t hrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” last week. the first season of the rings of power was wisely shot in New Zea land to emulate the stunning cinema tography of the peter Jackson films. the Lord of the rings in the title guar antees viewers for the first episode on the streamer, but after that?

According to advance reviews, the prequel is a brand-new story that takes place in the world of the Hobbit centuries earlier. As the title suggests, Sauron is busy creating the most potent rings to ever occu py the planet. We know how things eventually turn out, but now we'll learn how that powerful jewelry was created... and why. Again, “ the Lord of the rings: the rings of power” drops on Amazon prime on thursday September 1st. elsewhere in the streaming ser vices, I’m looking forward to “ the patient” on Hulu starting on tuesday August 30th. Steve Carrell stars as a psychiatrist held captive by one of his patients trying to be cured of his homicidal urges. t his ten-episode thriller was created by the team who created “ the Americans”, so the dra ma will be intense. From the music world, they are planning on airing the taylor Hawkins tribute Concert on paramount plus on Saturday, September 3rd at 11:30 a.m. eSt the emotional outpouring from musicians around the world illustrates how beloved the late Foo Fighters drummer was. m usic stars from around the globe gather in London to pay tribute to the most well-liked drummer in rock. If you can, spend your Saturday afternoon watching the live stream from Wem bley.If you liked the show “ b ones”, you might be compelled to check out “Devil in Ohio” on Netflix start ing on Friday September 2nd. emily Deschanel (bones) stars as a shrink whose family life unravels when she shelters a cult escapee. Lastly, I have been a fan of the C.J. box novels with the character Joe pickett, who is a Wyoming Fish & Game Warden. there’s a 10-episode series on paramount plus where the show follows the life of a Wyoming game warden and his family in and around the small towns and sur rounding wilderness of Yellowstone National park. pickett is known for coming from a violent upbringing, so he always tries to “do right” as the game warden and hold people to the highest standards. most of the novels dive into murder & mayhem however. I’m only one episode in, but the visuals are stunning. the series was filmed in Canada with Calgary standing in for the town of Saddlestring, Wyoming always referenced in the books. the first season is an adaptation of two of the Joe pickett books, Open Sea son and Winterkill. It’s already been renewed for a Season 2, which is nice! real quick, I watched the finale of Season 2 of “Only m urders In the - 1 - on Paramount right

Season

Joe Pickett

building” and found it to be very sat isfying. the series starring Steve mar tin, martin Short & Selena Gomez has already been renewed for a Season 3. At the box office, “ the Invitation” topped a historically low weekend. t he horror thriller racked up just $7 million, making it one of the lowest-earning #1 films in decades. According to rotten tomatoes, “the numbers turned out to be even lower than expected, at least in the context of history. What is more disconcert ing is not that this has anything to do with streaming options outweighing theatrical ones; this summer helped quash that fear. but between the lack of films being released in the near future and those that are not pulling their own weight, we could be looking at a real drought over the next several weeks, if not the next few months.”

The Patient - starring Steve Carrell on FX and Hulu starting

One thing I will highlight is that Saturday September 3rd is National Cinema Day. For one day only, more than 3,000 movie theaters across the US will offer a ticket to any movie or screening for $3 or less. there are around 40,700 movie screens in the US, and at least 30,000 of them will be participating. It reflects the lack of major movies in theaters after a promising summer; the next surefire hit likely isn't until " b lack panther: Wakanda Forever" in November. Check with your local theater as Na tional Cinema Day is brought to you by the Cinema Foundation, which is the National Association of theater Owners' nonprofit organization. From “regular” t V, I’ve already put a few shows on the calendar on my phone as I want to check out N bC’s reboot of “Quantum Leap” when it debuts on monday October 19th. two days later, another season of “ the Amazing race” begins on CbS on Sep tember 21st at 10 p.m. eSt. Former Jets and bills coach, and current NFL football analyst on eSpN, rex r yan is partnering with a golfing buddy / probation officer on season 34 of the CbS reality competition series. r yan and his partner will be one of 12 teams competing as part of a cast that also includes long-lost twins, former NFL cheerleaders, ballroom dancers, mo tivational speakers, and big b rother season 23 stars Derek Xiao and Claire rehfuss. I’ll be watching! We don’t go out for Coke; we go out for coffee. Sadly, medical issues have pushed coffee into the realm of a fond memory. I haven’t had coffee since February of 2020 and probably will never have it again. It hasn’t been easy. Until then I was a full-blown coffee addict, prone to headaches if I didn’t get my morning cup. All that changed following surgery (not related to coffee). my doctor said I should stay away from coffee, plus a long list of other foods, to ensure successful recovery. I have to look on the bright side and do as I’m told, considering that the doctor saved my life. two and a half years later and I have seen some benefits from cutting the daily coffee ritual out of my life. I save money. At $1.45, my Wawa cup added up. brewed at home, it costs $8 for a can of Chock full o’ Nuts. those expenses are now gone. I sleep better. Gone are the acid reflux and the tossing and turning. It’s incredible how quickly I’m able to fall asleep right after I shut my eyes. Leaving coffee behind also makes for cleaner car interiors. I’ve adjusted, but I would be lying if I said I’m over it, this column being the case in point. If my doctor ever decides to lift all dietary restrictions, coffee would be my first selection, followed by a fresh salad. more on that at another time.
