Peace

A ugust has a distinct feel that awakens all the sens es. I don’t need a calendar to recognize when the last month of summer has arrived. Every evening, I walk our dogs along the winding roads of our neighborhood. the sky glows gold en with pink and purple hues, and the moon shyly peeks through the clouds. We walk cautiously past the groups of rabbits (affectionately known by my family as "fluffles") chewing on clover, hoping that our dogs don’t notice and scare them off.We wave to our neighbors, whose children are playing on the grass. Fireflies flicker their light to the beat of the crickets’ low hum. My favorite tree, the Crepe Myrtles, are in full bloom with shades of magenta filling the neighborhood.

Make the last weeks of summer glorious

I know it’s late summer because of the baby clams at the water's edge as I stand on the beach. I contemplate whether to purchase a cherry water ice when I hear the ding of the ice cream man’s bell. My family is tossing a ball around on the hard, wet sand as my adult daughter reads her beach book with her feet dangling above the water’s reach, chair perched slightly ahead of the lifeguard’s stand. My basil plant is tall and wide, covered with little green leaves. I harvested them to make pesto for tonight’s pasta dinner. teary eyed parents are returning from dropping their children off at college. school supplies are front and center in all the stores with "Back to school" signs plastered as far as the eye can see. It's true, summer is winding down. However, we still have a few glorious weeks left with some of the area's greatest events still to come. the united states Air Force thun derbirds will soon be landing in Egg Harbor township at the 177th Fighter Wing for the Atlantic City Airshow on August 24. It’s the largest mid-week airshow in the country, drawing over 100,000 people to the Atlantic City Boardwalk. For more information and a full schedule of the day's events, go to page 10. the 40th anniversary of the film ing of "Eddie and the Cruisers" in somers Point is approaching. tony Marts Presents is going all out with an All-star Concert and celebration. Last weekend’s inaugural tidal Wave Music Festival on the beach in Atlantic City brought some of the na tion’s hottest country artists. Check out the images of that extraordinary event on pages 46-48. As we move towards the final weeks of August, I remind myself and encourage you to make time to enjoy it. Dip your toes in the ocean, go rafting down a river or see that band you’ve been talking about. We still have a couple weeks to have adventures and make memories with our loved ones. thank you for picking up this issue of shore Local. Weather By Dan Skeldon T he clock is ticking on the summer of 2022, with Labor Day right around the corner. And for south Jersey, it will most notably go down as a warmer than average and drier than average summer, with more cold ocean water than we’d like to see off of our beaches during the worst of the heat and humidity. But the hottest stretch of the summer is likely behind us, when 18 of 23 days were above 90 degrees between July 18th and August 9th. Our attention will now likely turn to the increasing dryness, not only in s outh Jersey but throughout the entire Northeast Corridor from Del aware to New England, where it’s at best abnormally dry and at worst an extreme drought. For south Jersey, it’s thankfully the former, as we’re classified as “ab normally dry” on the weekly drought monitor map, which looks at rainfall, soil moisture, and other factors when assessing just how dry an area is. to our north over North Jersey and to our south over lower Delaware, there is a “moderate drought”, the first of five drought stages that start at moderate and progress to severe, extreme, and finally exceptional. While the latter two are all too com mon out west but fairly rare here on the East Coast, parts of Massachusetts and Rhode Island indeed find themselves in a rare “extreme drought” in the latest update, with rainfall deficits over 10 inches in the last six We’remonths.notfaring nearly that bad here in south Jer sey, but it has been dry of late. Our rainfall deficit for the summer at the Atlantic City International Airport is around 3 inches. But eastern Atlantic County also got a very localized 3 to 4 inches of rain during some flash flood inducing thunderstorms on July 25th. Outside of areas struck by those storms, it’s been even drier and rainfall deficits are higher, 5 to 6 inches in spots. Keep in mind summer is often one of the wetter times of the year in south Jersey, as warmer and hu mid air carries more moisture, and downpour producing thunderstorms are more common. While we’ve been hot and humid throughout the sum mer, thunderstorms haven’t been as common as normal, hence the drier overall pattern. As we head into fall, it’s naturally a drier time of year, and often the dry, comfy, and pleasant weather of september and October is why it’s on the top of many of our lists (myself included) as the best time of the year at the shore. But barring any tropical mischief, summer dry spells don’t usually get better and often worsen in the early fall. Of course, as past columns have addressed, we’re still forecasting an above average hurricane season, with more storms than normal expected in the Atlantic from late August through October. As the remnants of Ida so tragically proved last year (10 inches of rain in a matter of hours in spots), tropical systems can put a big dent or even end dry spells. But it comes with a price that’s often too steep to pay for the needed rain, and it’s better to make up the rain an inch or two at a time with a few good steady soakings. Whether or not the tropics heat up is yet to be determined. so what if the dryness persists, or the North Jersey or Delaware drought expands into our backyards? Well, increasingly brown lawns are usually the most common sign. Ex pect higher water bills for those with flower or vegetable gardens, and in creased irrigation costs for farmers to keep their crops watered. trees can show a little of faint premature color, due to the stress of the dry weather, and even experience a little early loss of leaves. If the dryness continues into the fall foliage season, the intensity and duration of the color can also be impacted. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Water restrictions aren’t immedi ately likely, as it takes a while to get into a drought and to get to that point. Of course, it normally takes a while to get out of a drought too once we are there too. While the Northeast and especially the western half of the country wrangle with drought, areas in between deal with once-in-a-lifetime flash flooding, like recent floods in Kentucky and West Virginia illustrate. Interna tionally, drought has enveloped much of Europe, as rivers dry up during one of the hottest and driest summers on srecord.oyes, it could be much worse here in s outh Jersey. But remem ber that both increased droughts and floods are another result of our changing climate, one that we’ll have to adapt to as we’re capable of seeing both here at home. For Atlantic and Cape May counties, it’s an extreme flood that is more likely than an ex treme drought, as much as we hope that we won’t have to contend with either for decades to come. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. Sea Isle City has prohibited shark fishing on its beaches, even if the catch is released.

Sea Isle adopts shark fishing ban

By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer L ast month, s ea Isle City got some unwanted media attention when the story of a fisherman catching a seven-foot sand tiger shark off the beach went viral. City officials are taking steps to make sure it never happensMultipleagain.large sharks have been caught off sea Isle City beaches, so the city is taking action to maintain safety and avoid controversy. During a City Council meeting Aug. 8, Mayor Leonard Desiderio announced that the city will amend rules and regulations to prohibit shark fishing on or near the beaches - and within 600 feet of the shoreline. the ban will remain in effect until a new set of rules can be established. By shark fishing, the city means any attempt to target or harvest sharks from the sand or any struc ture built upon sand, like a fishing pier, jetty or bridge. It will also be illegal if a fisherman chums the water (baiting with blood or fish parts to attract sharks), or using drones to assist in shark fishing. "the city will contact the local fish ing community and the surfing com munity to look at long-term solutions to shark fishing off the city shore to ensure reasonable regulations pro moting the continued long-term, har monious sharing of surfing and fishing beaches by the stakeholders in these desired beach activities," Desiderio wrote in a sea Isle City newsletter. City officials note that pulling a shark onto the sand and then releas ing it into the ocean disrupts ecosys tems and draws dangerous creatures in close proximity to swimmers, surfers and other beachgoers. Ad ditionally, the social media attention can make tourists wary of staying on thePJisland.Braun, a Realtor working in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Vir ginia, received more than 350 likes on Instagram for a photo on the sea Isle beach holding open a sand tiger shark’s mouth. He shared his experi ence on “Fox and Friends,” claiming that his catch attracted crowds of over 200 people. “Everyone's obvi ously happy to see a healthy release and snap a couple photos," said Braun.

Fishermen

“Books and movies depict sharks as bloodthirsty killers, but sharks only kill about 10 people per year worldwide,” said Reynolds. “In con trast, humans deliberately kill 100 million sharks per year as trophies or for body parts, like teeth. Instead of being afraid of sharks, we need to respect and protect them.”

New Jersey waters are home to several shark nurseries - natural sanc tuaries where sharks reproduce and raise their pups without the danger of fishing or poaching. Juvenile sharks tend to stay near where they were raised to feed and avoid potential predators. there are smooth dogfish shark sanctuaries in the New Jersey tidal estuaries of Little Egg Harbor and g reat Bay, near Atlantic City. statewide, intentional fishing of great whites, sandbar, angel, and dusky sharks is prohibited. u nfor tunately, the DEP cannot prosecute illegal fishermen because when questioned on their target, anglers routinely claim to be seeking other species, like bluefish. s and tigers, like the one Braun caught, can swim close to shore look ing for fish, and are common along most of the popular, sandy beaches up and down the Atlantic Coast. On Long Island, the sand tiger has been blamed for recent attacks - experts say those sharks are juveniles chasing bait fish and mistakenly biting feet. None of the injuries have been deadly. Another sand tiger shark was found dead last month on the 12th Avenue beach in Longport, where an early morning beach walker spotted the animal with its belly gashed open. "It looks like someone intention ally opened the animal post-mortem, likely after it was already on the beach," said Dr. Harley Newton, the chief veterinarian at OCEARCH, a shark research team who witnessed theRecreationalevent. and commercial an glers are required by law to release any accidental or incidental shark catches or risk being fined up to $1,250 by sea Isle City, and more by the state of New Jersey. Yet, with out proper enforcement, fishermen will continue to bait, catch and even keep sharks caught on local beaches. At least there will be fewer photos posted on social media. Sarah Fertsch was born and raised in Egg Harbor Township, and holds a dual degree in public relations and political science. Prior to joining Shore Local full-time, she worked at a CSPAN affiliate, writing about Pennsylvania legislation. When she isn't writing, Sarah enjoys painting, horseback riding, and Crossfit. catch a sand tiger shark on 78th Street Beach in Sea Isle.

According to the s ave Coastal Wildlife Foundation, tens of species of sharks either dwell in waters off the coast of New Jersey, or travel up and down the Eastern seaboard in search of food and mates. Makos, hammerheads, bulls, tigers, thresh ers, dogfish, whale sharks and even great whites can either be found seasonally or year-round off our coast. Experts say an uptick in shark populations can be traced to efforts to protect harbor seals, a main food source for various shark species. Joseph Reynolds, the founder and president of save Coastal Wildlife, says that sharks, like humans, have an intrinsic right to exist.

Laura and Joseph look forward to the 50th anniversary, and are actively brainstorming specials and celebrations for next summer. For now, Little’s will continue to serve the public until the end of their season in latetseptember.heLaPortfamily dedicates this article to Richard Little, the founder and original owner of the ice-cream stand, who sadly passed away in 2021. His legacy lives on through the old-fashioned ice-cream shop, and the raisin he rescued all those years ago.

Once the raisin was recoated, they used a rope to pull the hat on top of the raisin’s head and secured it. “We had a whole group of neigh bors watching the show and cheering us on,” said Joseph. When asked to speak on his new appearance, the raisin declined to comment. He just stood there with his ice-cream cone, smiling and star ing off into the distance. t he raisin was erected in the 1980s, when California raisins were a big thing in pop culture.Aminiature golf course owner built the raisin to draw crowds to his Wildwood business. u nfortunately, the course went out of business in the 1990s. so Mr. Little, the original owner of Little’s since its beginning in 1973, hauled the raisin up the coast onto his front yard across from his icecream stand. t he wrinkly icon became a local legend, and customers stopped calling the shop “Lit tle’s,” instead calling it “ t he Raisin.”theLaPort family took over Little’s in 1999, unsure of what to think or do with the giant raisin. Laura LaPort confesses that this year, she hoped to remove the raisin from the premises, claiming that the bizarre statute was falling apart and couldn’t be fixed. When she pitched this idea to her staff of 12 girls, they unanimously voted to keep the raisin and fix him up. Little’s is a family business through and through, run by Laura and Joseph, and one of their three children, who trains new employees when she isn’t teaching in the Egg Harbor township school District. All three of their children scooped ice cream by the time they reached age 13, according to the LaPorts. On any evening during the summer, Little’s is the place to be. Families, couples on dates and sports teams stand in line under the old-fashioned hanging lights, craving flurries, soft serve ice-cream, sun daes and novelty treats. Each ice-cream girl is polite and moves quickly through the line. the store is shockingly clean, with its shiny ice-cream machines dating back to the 1960s. the menu is extensive, offering options for every taste. smiles are on everyone’s faces, happy to enjoy a cold treat on a hot summer night. the LaPorts plan to host an em ployee reunion for the many workers they have had over the almost 50 years of being in business. “ some girls, now women, are in their 60s, even older than us,” said Joseph. “ t here must be over 100 former employees, all connected by the same experiences, like having chocolate sauce all over your arms or smelling like sweet cream.”

By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer I f you’ve driven down Zion Road in Egg Harbor township recently, you probably noticed something different. the 20-foot raisin holding an icecream cone beside Little’s Ice Cream shop looks just like new. that’s be cause the raisin received a paint job and a new fiberglass hat with an “L” on the front. the hat was handmade by Joseph LaPort, the co-owner of Little’s along with his wife, Laura. “ the hat itself is about 80 pounds, and we sculpted it from wood and fiberglass. We had to make sure that the hat would be able to survive snow storms in the winter,” Joseph said. LaPort, with a little extra help from friends and neighbors, hand-painted the raisin while standing on a ladder.

Outlet - Ocean Outdoor Patio. Hurry and get beautiful new outdoor furniture so you can enjoy it this season.

A s w e enter into the summer season, many shore home owners and businesses are thinking of updating their outdoor spaces. When it comes to the indoor comforts of home outside, Ocean Outdoor Teak and Polly outlet is ready to help get the look you want with quality furniture that lasts. Like many businesses, furniture retailers have faced a shortage of in coming inventory, leaving families and businesses without quality products to make their space look the best. Retailers across the country say that shipment issues are the primary cause of the shortage. Because most patio furniture makers work ou tside the United States, tariffs and taxes along with other inter national issues have been on the rise. This creates is creating big problems for homeowners and businesses alike. For tunately, local buyers need not to worry since this is n’t a problem for Ocean Outdoor Teak and Poly Outlet. They have new shipments coming in every week. Truckloads of beautiful, modern furniture are available for customers to browse and purchase. “Because the outdoor season is relatively short here in New Jersey, it is important for us to stock enough furniture for our local cus tomers to have immediately,” says store owner Alice DiGiovanni. “We are ready now, with a full selection of colors and designs of both Poly and Teak furniture.” Teak has always been the gold stan dard in outdoor tables and chairs but its new rival, Poly lumber furniture is quickly overtaking the outdoor market. Poly lumber is built mostly from recycled products and holds its color well. Com bine its color retention with stainless steel hardware, a variety of color combi nations and styles, and you may find that poly is the best choice for beach homes, vacation resorts or country living. It is extremely durable and resistant to nearly anything Mother Nature throws its way. Poly plastic furniture can be left outside in the summer and winter without any adverse effects. The plas tic is resistant to sun, rain, sleet, snow, wind, saltwater, chlorine and mildew. You can’t say that about furniture made from wood or metal. Poly furniture is low maintenance and easy to care for; it requires no special coatings, sanding or staining. It does not require hazardous chemical treatments to maintain its durability. Poly only needs to be cleaned with some good, old-fashioned soap and water. Tables, chairs, deep seating sets and pub sets are ready to go to their new home today. Poly pub sets are popular at the shore. Two seat pub sets start at $950 and our fourseat pub sets with a pub table start at $1,400. Pub and bar sets are great because they allow cou ples and families to see over deck railings so their view is not ob sured. These sets have the potential to make Ocean City, Sea Isle, and Margate customers very happy. The popular folding Adirondack Chairs start at $299. By Holly Fertsch Z oe Herishen has been skating since she was five years old. However, she was usually the only girl at the skate parks she frequented. Herishen decided to change that. On August 11, she ran a skate clinic just for girls at the Ocean City skatepark. Over twenty girls participated in the skate clinic. Herishen and other female volunteers taught girls how to push, kickturn on banks, drop in, and even do 50-50 grinds. Participants ranged from girls as young as four years old to teenagers. Volunteers met the girls where they were as far as skill level and offered one-on-one, personalized skate lessons to each girl.Just before the event, there was a heavy rain shower. Luckily, it stopped just in time for the skate clinic. the clinic started off with group ing the girls by what skill they wanted to work on. One group was for girls who were just learning to push. Push ing off the ground whilst balancing on a skateboard is the most basic skill of skating. girls who had never set foot on a skateboard were cheered on as they propelled themselves across the park. Herishen held a young skater’s hands as the participant stood on a skateboard almost as tall as her. Another group worked on going down banks, which is a type of ramp. some girls practiced going up ramps and coming down fakie. Fakie is a term for riding backward. they also worked on kickturning on the ramps: going up the ramp, lifting their front wheels, and pivoting to ride back down.the third group congregated at the shallow bowl to practice dropping in. Dropping in means perching your board on the edge of a bowl or ramp, then shifting your weight forward to “drop” onto the ramp. Learning to drop in is a rite of passage in the skateboarding world. standing on an edge and bracing yourself for the “drop” can feel terrifying. this skill is about overcoming a mental barrier and facing fear head-on. Once your front wheels hit the ramp and you speed forward, it feels like an exhil arating adrenaline rush. Volunteers held girls’ hands as they lurched forward to drop into the bowl. some girls were more advanced and worked on other skills such as tail stalls, 5050 grinds, and rock-to-fakie. t his skate clinic was open to all ages and all abilities, and the volunteers did a fantastic job of individualizing the lessons to each skater. After these individualized skate lessons, the girls took a break to enjoy Playa Bowls and water bottles that were donated for the event. Joe Wallash of Playa Bowls commented that he saw this event on Facebook and wanted to help. then, Herishen announced that it was time for a game of “skate limbo”. two volunteers held a stick that skat ers had to skate under, and gradually lowered it as the game went on. g irls bent their knees and crouched down as they rolled under the bar. Herishen held a little girl’s hands and gave en couragement to help her participate. As the bar got lower and lower, girls began laying on their boards to make it under. Herishen announced that anyone who did a hippie jump (that is, jumping over the bar while the board rolled under and landing back on the board) would automatically win. two girls bravely attempted to jump over the stick and were applauded for their effort. the game was a hit, and girls giggled as they worked out ways to make it under (or over) the stick. Next, there was a free skate ses sion. Volunteers skated with the girls and often stopped to offer tips or encouragement. Finally, theskate clinic ended with a raffle. Herishen drew participants’ names out of a helmet and gave out prizes. g irls won skateboards, penny boards, helmets, pads, t-shirts, and water bottles. It was a great end to a great day of skating. Herishen lives in Woodridge, NJ,

space for female skaters. I also loved the chance to progress as a skater. I had an opportunity to drop in the shallow bowl, which was the highest drop-in I’ve ever attempted. It's not insanely tall like a vert ramp, but it felt very high up to me as I perched on the edge of it. Volunteers encouraged me to try it, and a volunteer helped me balance as I tipped into the bowl. My front wheels hit the ramp, and my adrenaline surged as I sped forward. It was an amazing experience! the Ocean City skatepark is locat ed at 550 Asbury Ave. in Ocean City, next to the firehouse. Herish en organizes a Chica de Mayo skate event every year. she held a Chica de Mayo at the Ocean City skatepark in 2021. she decided to hold another girls’ skate clinic at Ocean City skate park this year, one that was only for this park and not part of her usual Chica de Mayo events. t he goal was to get more girls involved in eventwhyMaeve,momJenaggressiveotherattoharderthatenskateboarding.traceyHerishcommenteditisoftenforgirlslearntoskateparkswithfewgirlsandboys.Vallieres,theof4-year-oldexplainedtheall-girlswasbeneficial

for her daughter: “It really helps her self-confidence. My son skates here, and my daughter wanted to be like her brother but was nervous. It’s good for girls to have a space together.” tracey Herishen said that she expected a lot of friendships to be made at the skate clinic. On a personal note, as a woman who skateboards, I could relate to feeling isolated in the male-dominant world of skating. My dad taught me the basics of skating when I was a kid, but I didn’t get serious about it until recently. I began longboarding in college and was reminded of how much I love the feeling of going fast on my board. I still didn’t have any friends who skated, though. t hen the pandemic hit. During the lock down, I exchanged my longboard for a skateboard. I skated in my garage and empty parking lots. I practiced the basics and learned to ollie, which is the foundation for learning flip tricks. My dad and I even built a small miniramp that I learned to drop in on. As the lockdown lifted, I began frequent ing skateparks. It is normal for me to be the only female skater there. this is not to say that male skaters haven’t been welcoming to me. I often get pointers on my ollies from the guys at the skateparks I frequent, and my dad has gone above and beyond in teaching me how to skate. abeIofreignitedskateishen’sipatingHowever,skateparksaboutandbusymuch.en’texperience.waysstandingHowever,outisalanawkwardLately,IhavbeenskatingI’vebeenwithworknervousgoingtoalone.particinHerAllgirlsclinichasmyloveskateboarding.wasthrilledtoapartofsuchwelcoming

Le t It Grow By Tammy Thornton W hen the wallet feels a little thinner and lighter, one must be more prudent with their purchasing choices. though I would strongly debate anyone that considers it frivolous to buy plants, at some point I would agree that a little restraint is necessary. so what is a plantaholic to do? go shopping, of course—in your own garden! Look around your garden from the perspective of an eager customer. Keep a keen eye for plants that are lost in the crowd among their peers but could shine if moved to a bare spot in the garden. Have you ever been at the grocery store and reached deep into the dark of a shelf for the “last one” of a particular product? Per haps it was hiding behind something else. In the same way, If you’ve been growing your garden for any length of time or inherited a sea soned garden, you’ll find that some of the bushes and large plants have dwarfed others. Little forgotten plants may be languishing in the shadows of big bullies of the garden. Recently, I’ve been reworking a section of my yard that needed some filler plants. But I really didn’t want to spend any money on this project. After “shopping” in my garden, I found variegated liriope hiding under the hydrangeas and baby hostas stifled by bigger plants. Moving them to this new location has rescued them from their hidden con finement. Now they are getting some much-needed attention and standing out in their new home. Dividing plants is a way to provide yourself with multiples of the same plant. Over time, many perennials become overcrowded and tired, and grow too big for their own good. You may notice that their center looks brown and hollow, or the plant isn’t flowering as well as it once did. By dividing plants, you will prolong their life and stimulate new growth. the type of perennial you have will determine when and how to di vide your plant. Irises should be divided this time of year (from July to september, after blooming), which will allow the roots to become established before winter sets in. Other plants, like delphiniums, should be divided in early spring. A spade is my favorite tool for dividing plants such as hostas or spirea. You can slice straight down through the roots and get a clean cut. Do your research—some perennials have a deep taproot and are not good candidates for division. If possible, avoid dividing plants while they are in flower so that they can focus their energy on root growth. For many perenni als, spring or fall is the best time for division. But if you choose to divide in the sum mer, pick a cool, cloudy day, and water the plant well before and after surgery. g ive these transplants a little extra attention since the move may shock them. taking cuttings is another great way to preserve your favorite plant and gift yourself multiples. summer cuttings should root easily and quickly. Depending on the plant, you can prop agate your cuttings in soil or water. s edums (such as Autumn Joy) are among the easiest plants to grow from cuttings, but some other good candi dates are hydrangeas, asters, azaleas, and coleus. taking cuttings of annuals will also allow you to grow the plants indoors during the winter to preserve These purple coneflowers can be divided in spring or fall to start a group in a new location. Collect seeds from your plants and save for the following season. Above, seeds from honesty (money plant) and purple coneflower. th

them for the following season. taking a small cutting won’t hurt the plant and you’ll be creating a clone of the parent plant. sharing snippets of plants is also an easy way to exchange plants with a friend.this brings us to another way to get “free” plants. trade with fellow gardeners. While you have an over abundance of black-eyed susans, they may have lilies coming out of their ears. Connect with other gardeners through gardening clubs or gardening groups on-line. Last summer, I met a lovely woman originally from sri Lanka. she was happy to take some of my bee balm and ferns, and she gifted me with angel’s trumpet and Crocosmia. she spotted my okra in flower and gave me great tips about making cur ry. It was a pleasure connecting with someone else so passionate about gardening. A word of caution though: if a gardener offers you a plant with plenty to spare, that same plant could also rapidly spread in your own garden. You may get more than you bargained for. Be wary of aggressive or invasive plants that will take over your garden. Mint is especially invasive and should be grown in its own pot to contain its spread.Last of all, keep your garden grow ing by saving seeds. this takes a bit more patience. though some plants grow very quickly, in most cases you’ll be waiting until the following grow ing season to use these seeds and it may take a lot of hits and misses to be successful. Keep in mind that seeds from hybrid or cross-pollinated plants won’t necessarily be true to the parent plant. But saving seeds is a cost-effective way to increase your garden. seed-swapping with a friend is another great way to obtain a variety of plants. Before spending money, shop your own garden for plants. sometimes simply moving a plant from a crowded spot to a new location can be just the fix your garden needed. Expanding your garden through propagation can also be very rewarding. It’s a frugal way to get more plants and preserve your favorites. g rowing multiples of the same flower together will create swaths of color for a dramatic effect. g roupings of the same type of flower will also grab the attention of pollina tors flying overhead. When you feel you have too much of a good thing, share and trade with others, creating variety in your garden. shore Local News loves hearing from our readers. s end your com ments, questions, and pictures to shorelocalgardener@gmail.com. Mini Golf on the Boardwalk: Theming is Everything

Summer Party August 27th Extended Hours 'tll 3PM Food Trucks - Live Music from The SSP's Bring Your Beach Chair!

By Steffen Klenk L ast week, shore Local staff writer sarah Fertsch and I (steffen Klenk) began ex ploring some of the area’s finest mini golf establishments. If you are just reading this series, so far, we ventured to Congo Falls Adventure golf, where sights and sounds of the jungle were ablaze on the Congo Queen course. Our next destination was goofy golf, a course where each hole provided exciting, themed chal lenges, such as the makeshift skeeball setup at hole number 7. It also ended up being the most affordable option that evening. this week, sarah and I played eigh teen holes at s eaport Village g olf. this aquatic-themed mini gold course is located conveniently between 9th and 10th streets on the Ocean City Boardwalk, with a go-kart track on the bottom level. Just look for the big shark taking a “bite” out of the Playland Pier 9 sign, and you’re in the right place. Approximately every five minutes, you will spot a shark pop up from out of the water, with a seagull in tow.Notice the tiny buildings as you walk up to hole number one on your right. they are almost reminiscent of a small seaside town. Next to that, the masts of a tall ship tower high above the playing surface. this mini golf course is based loosely on the sindia and its storied history. It is one of the most recognized shipwrecks along ourAtcoastline.seaport Village golf, it is easy to get a hole-in-one, with guided tracks that will lead the ball into, if not close to, the hole. You may have to attempt a few bank shots or hit the ball hard enough to get the desired effect. Whoever designed the layout for this course gets an A+ for creativity. As for the theme, it is definitely made for locals and visitors alike. While you are there, take a look at the plaques that highlight the sin dia’s storied history, complete with historic photo references. Overall, seaport Village appears to be a relatively new course. It isn’t worn down, and each of the holes present exciting challenges. It is also reasonably priced, compared to oth er courses we have visited so far on this journey. With all these valuables, I rated this course an 8 out of 10, while sarah ranks seaport at 9 out of With10.nightfall abound, we made a trek down to the 1300 block of the Boardwalk to Medi eval Fantasy. given the fact that this was our first time visiting this location, we had no idea what to expect. I had informed sarah that part of the course is blacklight, and we were taken by surprise from the very be ginning.Look for the castle-like fortress and dragons that keep guard high above the board walk. Follow the arrows that lead you upstairs, and you will instantly be immersed by sights of sorcerers and swords, drag ons, and dungeons. Portions of this course are outdoors, protected by a canopy roof. By the time you reach hole number six, you will enter one of two blacklight rooms, each one mesmer izing and quite on-par with the castle theme. In the first room, it feels like you are walking through a library, with stained glass lining the walls, books placed firmly on shelves, and a blackboard. As you venture through these rooms, be mindful of your step. It is a little dark, though there is enough light to see around you. Illuminated arrows keep you aware of subtle changes in the course. Medieval Fantasy is one of the cleanest courses on the boardwalk by far, and it was not crowded. Both sar ah and I enjoyed the blackout rooms, a feature you will not find anywhere else locally. You may have to attempt a few trick shots here, otherwise you are guaranteed to have a fun time. And, if you’re feeling lucky, try hole 19 for your chance at winning a free game, just like I did! Where will sarah and I end up next week? You will just have to wait! Eagles preseason, a Phillies Playoff Push and Ben Strikes Again

Ex tra points

● Also looking impressive was the big rookie Jordan Davis, as the 6-7, 340-pound defensive lineman saw action as both a run stuffer and a pass rusher. Davis commanded plenty of attention from the Jets’ offensive line and managed to shed two blockers on a few occa sions. After blowing up a double team against the pass in the first quarter, Davis showed how he can transition from power to speed as he closed on a scrambling Wil son. these types of plays won’t exactly show up on the stat sheet, but it’s safe to say his stock has risen even higher after his first preseason action. Another former georgia standout, linebacker Na kobe Dean, had a nice game after Ben Simmons settles grievance against the Sixers Jalen Hurts looked good in the preseason game against the Jets

A s we head into the middle of August, the Eagles have one pre season game under their belts, the Phillies are in the middle of a playoff push, and Ben (simmons) strikes again. since I last wrote, the Eagles lost their preseason opener to the Jets, but at least the #1 offense and #1 defense looked good. the Birds also traded a former high draft pick that many considered to be a bust. t he Phillies play some exciting games with the Mets, and are set to play some more as the schedule begins to turn in their favor. Plus, they are on the verge of a historic win. t he sixers will be back playing on Christmas Day this year. Also, the team reaches an agree ment with “disgruntled former em ployee” Ben simmons. From hockey, should the Flyers “tank for Bedard”?

● More on Hurts now, as surprisingly, he didn’t target or throw to new wide receiver A.J. Brown at all in the one series that he was in there. On the 22-yard touchdown pass to Dallas goedert though, you could see the influence of Brown as he drew the attention of the defend ers away from goedert and essen tially provided an “assist” on the play. Hurts also looked very accu rate on his first pass attempt of the game when he rolled to his right and hit Quez Watkins for a 28-yard completion and a first down. Again, it’s only a glimpse, and most likely the only look we will get, but Hurts looked pretty impressive in his first game action since the playoff game in tampa Bay last year.

By Pete Thompson

On the local front, we say goodbye to legendary Princeton coach Pete Carril.

● Let’s start things off with the Eagles, who lost their preseason opener to the Jets 24-21, but the final score doesn’t really matter. What does matter is that starting QB Jalen Hurts was 6-for-6 for 80 yards and a touchdown in his only drive of the ballgame. Hurts did get hit late, out of bounds, and that got a lot of fans and coach Nick sirianni fired up. thankfully, Hurts bounced back up and swapped out his helmet for a headset and that’s probably the last we will see of Hurts before the season opener in Detroit on september 11th.

● Newly acquired linebacker Ky zir White had the play of the night for the defense as he stepped in front of a Zach Wil son throw and set the Eagles up with a short field that led to their second touchdown. It was 14-zip Eagles after one quarter and that was it for almost all the starters.

a relatively quiet camp to date. Dean finished with five tackles and blew up a couple of run plays, sometimes with the as sistance of Davis to prove that the former college teammates still work well together.

● One final piece of Eagles news as the team traded JJ Arcega-Wh iteside, a former second-round draft pick, to the seahawks for a defensive back on Monday August 15th. In 40 games, Arcega-Wh iteside caught just 16 passes for 290 yards and one touchdown. Known as J-JAW, he will forever be remembered by Eagles fans as a bust simply because of other, more talented receivers who were drafted after him, like D.K. Met calf and terry McLaurin. Ironically enough, Arcega-Whiteside now becomes a teammate of Metcalf in seattle. the Eagles get back cor ner / safety ugo Amadi in return.

● As you read this, the Phils are set to host the Mets for a four-game weekend series at Citizens Bank Park, and they won’t have to face either Max s cherzer or Jacob de g rom. t he bigger stat that I saw the other night was in their next 20 games, the Phillies were only set to face one team with a record above .500 and that’s the Mets. they host Cincinnati, host Pittsburgh, go to Arizona and go to san Francisco. All those teams have sub-.500 records, so again, the Phillies just need to keep beat ing the teams they are supposed to beat! ● Oh, one last Phillies factoid and that’s about their franchise record. As I write this, the Phils sit at 9,999 career wins. A lot of fuss was made a few years back when they became the first team in major league baseball to LOsE ten-thousand games. I wonder if as much attention will be given to them being able to WIN ten-thou sand games once they pick up that next “W”...?

● When I was on the radio on 97.3 E s PN with Mike g ill the other day, he excitedly revealed to our listening audience that the sixers are going to be back playing a game on Christmas Day this year. After being left off the Christmas Day slate in 2020 and 2021, the sixers are now set to travel to Madison square garden and play the Knicks on December 25th as part of the 2022-23 schedule, according to several reports. Al so included as part of the NBA’s five-game slate are Bucks-Celtics, suns-Nuggets,↘Lakers-Mavericks on 36Bryce Harper has started swinging a bat again SOMERS POINT & EGG HARBOR

● On the offensive side of the ball, I have to acknowledge the job that rookie center Cam Jur gens did in place of the rehabbing Jason Kelce. Jurgens admitted to reporters afterwards that he had some first-game jitters, but the second-round center settled down, made the calls at the line, and got to show off his athleticism with several blocks in space — one in which he circled back on a screen and leveled a Jets defen sive lineman. Again, it’s early, but I think the Birds hit a home run with this pick.

Continued

● Now to the Phillies, as they won two out of three at home against Miami and then won a thriller in New York for game one of their three-game series with the Mets. When the Phillies won 2-1 in 10 innings to beat Max scherzer on Friday August 12th, I was really optimistic they could perhaps win the series in New York. that wasn’t to be though, as they ran into Jacob de g rom and all of a sudden couldn’t score runs. Re member, they are doing this with out Bryce Harper, but Harper was spotted taking swings in the cage at Citizens Bank Park on Monday August 15th while the Phillies were on the road in Cincinnati. Dave Dombrowski says the team is targeting september 1st for his return, so that’s big news.

ORDER

● Cole, a fifth-round pick by the Eagles in 2005, spent the first 10 seasons of his career with the team and made two Pro Bowls. the edge rusher from Cincinnati finished second-team all-pro in 2009 after tallying 12.5 sacks. He finished his 12-year career with the Indianapolis Colts and retired with 90.5 sacks, 133 tackles for loss, and 21 forced fumbles. His 85.5 sacks as an Eagle is second all-time behind only Reggie White.

TOWNSHIP 35August 18, 2022

● I enjoyed both trent Cole and Hugh Douglas when they were in Philly, and will be applauding as they go into the team’s Hall of Fame on November 27th.

● At halftime of the Jets game, the Eagles announced that they will add two of the best pass rushers in their history to the team’s Hall of Fame later this year. Hugh Douglas and trent Cole, both members of the team during the 2000s, will be inducted into the Eagles’ Hall of Fame on Nov. 27 when the team hosts the g reen Bay Packers.

● Douglas, an all-pro defensive end drafted by the New York Jets, played six total seasons with the Eagles. the former Central state standout spent five seasons with the Eagles from 1998-2002 and finished his career wearing mid night green in 2004. He recorded 80 career sacks — 54.5 of which came with the Eagles — and was named to the 2000 All-Pro team in addition to three Pro Bowl nods. He had 64 tackles for loss and 13 forced fumbles in his 10-year career.

● One quick hockey note, as I have seen some articles & social media posts that ask if the Flyers should “tank for Bedard”...? Connor Bedard, is viewed by many as a generational talent, and he is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in next year's draft. the Flyers could land him with a lot of losing and a little luck. t he 5-foot-9, 181-pound center has lived up to the hype so far, and might just be on his way to fulfilling the “future of hockey” prophecy as well. In his first full season in the WHL, Bedard, who turned 17 in July, racked up 51 goals and 100 points in just 62 games for the Regina Pats. His 51 goals ranked second in the WHL and his 100 points were good enough for fourth in a league that features players up to 20 years old. Of course, I’m not sure how the dwindling Flyers fan base would feel about purposely losing with no guarantee that they’ll land the top pick. stay tuned.

● the other piece of sixers news that broke recently was that the team has reached an agreement with disgruntled former star Ben simmons about the $20 million that was withheld from him during his time where he demanded to be traded. the terms of the agree ment were not disclosed. simmons and the National Basketball Players Associ ation filed the grievance in April after s immons’ rep resentatives and the sixers could not reach an agree ment.

● Although he did not play for the Nets after he was traded, simmons was paid his entire salary for the second half of the season. It was thought that he might play in game 4 of the team’s first-round series against the Boston Celtics but could not over come a back injury. the Nets were swept and s immons had back surgery in May. As far as I’m concerned, no one is a winner here. Both Ben simmons and the sixers wasted their six years together. And that’s a darn shame!

● Finally, on the local front, I want to close with some words about Pete Carill, the legendary Prince ton Men’s Basketball coach, who passed away at the age of 92. uti lizing a deliberate, clock-draining offense that relied on backdoor cuts and precision passing, Carril led Princeton to 13 regular-season Ivy League titles at a time when the conference did not have a postseason tournament. Prince ton also won the NIt in 1975, de feating Providence 80-69 at Mad ison square garden. But it was the tigers' memorable March nights in their 11 NCAA tournament berths under Carril that featured the frenzied coach prancing up and down the sideline as Princ eton tried to outsmart superior opponents — during upsets and near-upsets on prime-time televi sion — that left an indelible mark on college basketball. For me, I idolized temple’s Hall of Fame Coach John Chaney. He respected Pete Carill so much he once said in 1996, “I’ll play anyone, any place, any time. Well, except Princeton, of course. I may be crazy but I’m not stupid.” R.I.P. Pete Carill. Who's on your team ff's Journal By Jeff Whitaker A s you and I head into the fall and the last quarter of 2022, we need to ask ourselves some important questions. What Is My Dream? Who Is On My Mauriceteam?Wilson was one of many who tried to climb Mount Everest. But he had only three half hearted companions. they couldn’t cut it. And that made all the difference. Who do you have on your team? A great dream with a bad team is nothing more than a nightmare. What should your dream team look like? Your team must be the size of your dream. If you want to climb a Mount Everest, you need a Mount Everest-sized team. It could be actually working with you or even just encour aging you and helping to motivate you along the way. Either way, we all need others on this journey if we are going to achieve any thing worthwhile and significant. While these questions can apply to your professional life for those of you in leadership or running a business, they are just as applicable in our personal lives. We all know none of us can successfully navigate through this life on our own. All of this leads me to the power of mentorship. As you and I grow and as we travel this journey profession ally and personally, just as the Law of Mount Everest teaches about the power of a team it’s important to point out that a big part of that team is having someone you can trust who can mentor you along your journey. Now mentorship can take on a lot of different forms. During my lifetime I’ve been mentored by people I’ve never even met. s ome of those mentors are not even living any longer. Let me explain. some of the greatest minds, wisest individuals and those with the greatest insight have lived before me and left a treasure trove of wisdom in books, articles, and periodicals. From autobiographies to biographies, there is so much we can all learn from those who’ve gone before us. then there are those who we know or can connect with through others we know and if you and I ask, many are more than willing to sit down and mentor us. they can help us avoid some of the pitfalls they experienced during life, let us know what’s worked for them, and what hasn’t. We can also hire mentors who will work one on one with us or coach us along the way. the important part of what I’m trying to get across is that you and I don’t have to reinvent something or rediscover something that has already been done before. Find someone who can teach you what they’ve learned, coach you through circumstances you are going through by asking questions that will help you discover new doors of opportunity and levels of awareness. the power of mentorship can literally change your life direction. Find a mentor. Make a commitment to grow. Do it today. And let’s go out and make a difference. Jeff Whitaker is a veteran broadcaster here in South Jersey. Deciding if a dog is right for you

Heidi Clayton is a retired 25 year veteran of the Atlantic City Police Department. She started Four on the Floor Dog Training a result of her own struggle to find a positive & reward based dog trainer in the South Jersey area. She is passionate about giving every dog, even the difficult ones, a voice and the skills they need to thrive in life. If you have questions on finding a pure bred puppy feel free to fouronthefloorschool@gmail.comemail

40 August 18, 2022

By Heidi Clayton D eciding to bring a dog into your life is huge commit ment and a decision that should never be made on a whim. there is a lot to consider and making an informed and a well educated decision can save you from heartbreak or aggravation. I work with all kinds of dogs from pure bred puppies, to rescues, to the ever popular doodle dogs. some people forget how much work a puppy is. they may get an older rescue dog that is just not at all what they signed up for. some are not aware that their doodle dog sheds an awful lot and will need massive amounts of grooming. so before you commit to a dog or puppy here are some considerations. First of all, who wants the dog or puppy? I know it is very cute to see toddlers or little kids climbing all over a dog or puppy, but I will caution you that these household members are not at all capable of actually raising said dog or puppy. Many families I have worked with got the dog or puppy for the kids. the kids it turns out enjoy the dog or puppy in theory but when it comes to cleaning up the poop or taking the dog for a walk in the freezing cold, they often drop the metaphorical ball. As the adult in the family ask yourself if the kids flake out, am I ready to commit to raising this puppy or dog? g et ting everyone, including both parents, on board to the work coming your way is a key component to making it work. Be honest with yourself and the capabilities of everyone involved before you commit to a dog or puppy. Next ask yourself if you are ready and able to commit to the costs of a having dog or puppy. Whether buying or paying the rescue fee, there is al ways a fee. Next will come all of the additional costs that a dog requires such as toys, a crate, bowls, leash es, food, and veterinary care. What about a vet emergency? In the course of every one of my dogs lives there has been at least one visit to an ER. the “average” intestinal obstruction surgery costs about five grand. Do you have the money to provide for theindogthe long term? Just like kids, dogs aren’t cheap and most often they do not get summer jobs. What about your lifestyle? Are you an active person who likes to walk, run, or hike? Or are you a couch potato? What will you do with the dog when you do travel? What about that job of yours? How demanding is it? Will you have the the time to devote to training the dog? It is best to find a dog or breed that matches your lifestyle. Maybe if work is de manding an older dog would best fit your lifestyle instead of a needy puppy. Puppies are a marathon, not a sprint so getting one is huge time commitment. Make sure you are in position to best work a puppy into yourOncelifestyle.youhave honestly asked yourself these questions, you can move onto actually getting the dog or puppy. there is also zero shame of deciding now is not the right time for a dog. In my next article, I will cover finding a reputable breeder of a pure bred dog. Don’t panic we will also cover finding a reputable rescue and will navigate all things doodle.

What is tex-Mex, you ask? Well, this style of cuisine combines Mexican flavors with texas staples. Nachos, salsa verde, enchiladas, quesadillas, and black bean bakes all qualify as tex-MexWhendishes.texas became an official state within the u nited states, An glo-s axon ranchers settled in the territory to raise cattle. Mexican was already popular in the former-Mexi can land, so the ranchers combined their recipes with Mexican flair, thus inventing tex-Mex in the 1940s. In s outh Jersey, most of our “Mexican” restaurants actually serve tex-Mex. Chido Burrito in Northfield serves up delicious burritos, bowls, fish tacos and churros. t he surf theme, indoor palm trees and tropical feel make any customer feel like they are vacationing close to the equator. If you are craving tostadas, elote, or mole, check out tacos El tio, El tipico in somers Point, or Agave Mexican in Ocean City. Of course, if you enjoy hosting pool parties. Consider serving up texMex deliciousness. Pick up some sta ples like pinto beans, wheat tortillas, chili powder, pico de gallo, avocados, and onion. tex-Mex food tends to be spicier than American classics, so make sure that your family/friends are comfortable trying something new. Here’s a recipe to make at home: Tamale Pie Ingredients: ● 1 corn muffin mix ● 1 can of creamed corn ● ½ cup of sour cream ● 1 cup of shredded cheddar ● 1 cup of shredded pepper jack ● 1 pound of ground beef ● 2 tsp of salt ● 1 tsp of chili powder ● 1 tsp of cumin ● ⅓ cup of red enchilada sauce ● ½ large white onion, diced ● 4 garlic cloves, crushed ● 2 large eggs ● tortilla chips for dipping In a large bowl, mix by hand corn muffin mix, sour cream, eggs, and corn. Preheat the oven to 400 de grees.spray a pan with nonstick spray and transfer muffin mixture into the pan. Bake for 20 minutes until it's golden-brown. Let cool for five minutes.Inalarge skillet with a dime-sized portion of olive oil, brown ground beef for six minutes over medium heat. Add garlic, onion and spices. Cook down for another three min utes.Drain the fat and let the skillet continue to simmer on low heat. Poke holes in the cornbread and pour enchilada sauce on top. Add beef mix ture on top of the cornbread, then cheese.Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes, then uncover and broil until cheese is melted for another five minutes.Letcool and scoop onto plates with tortilla chips. Enjoy! 49August 18, 2022

By Michael Bray W hat does it mean for a wine to be classified as “natural” or “organic”? And why are only certain wines vegan, even though they’re all made from grapes? I’ll be exploring these topics in this week’s article, and sharing infor mation on one of my favorite wines of the moment. Natural & Organic Wines Natural wines and organic wines have a lot in common (most significantly, a concern for the earth and sustainable practices), and several key differences. to be certified organic by the usDA, a wine must be made without genetic en gineering, and it must undergo a rigorous process of inspections and assessments. the grapes must be grown organically, without synthetic fertilizers, and all oth er ingredients (such as yeast and fining agents) must be certified organic, as well. While sulfites are commonly added to wines as an additional preserving agent or to enhance flavor, organic wines can not have added sulfites. Wines labeled as “made with organic grapes” have slightly less restrictions, but it is still a feat for winemakers to achieve this certification. “Natural wine,” on the other hand, is not a legal certification. Rather, it’s a loose term that refers to wines made with little to no intervention by the winemaker. this means grapes are grown without the assistance of pesticides, grapes are hand picked, and juice is fermented into wine using only native yeasts. these yeasts oc cur naturally on the fruit, and winemakers allow fermentation to start spontaneous ly, rather than controlling fermentation with the addition of cultured yeasts. While natural wines won’t necessary be certi fied organic, one could argue that they exemplify the most ancient, non-invasive method of winemaking. You can expect native yeasts to im part wildly different flavor profiles and textures onto wine. Natural wines may have an oily or creamy texture, and exhibit funky aromas and flavors reminiscent of barnyard, forest floor, and sourdough (along with more familiar impressions of fruit and spice). Vegan Wines While the grapes in wine are (of course) vegan, other ingredients added ent a challenge to those looking to avoid animalMostbyproducts.winesundergo a process called “fining,” during which a substance (the “fining agent”) is added to clarify and stabilize the wine. the fining agent binds to unwanted particles that could cause the wine to appear hazy or contribute undesirable aromas and flavors. Often times, these fining agents are derived from animal products. Egg whites, casein (a protein commonly found in cow’s milk), and isinglass (a form of collagen obtained from the swim bladders of fish) are among the most popular fining agents. If you are searching for vegan wines, go natural! Natural wines are made with minimal intervention and are typically unfined. some producers also employ sterile ceramic filters instead of a more conventional fining agent. What I’m Drinking Now: Roberto Henriquez Corinto Super Estrella 2019 (Itata Valley, Chile; 100% Chasselas) t his extremely limited production wine checks all the boxes mentioned above: it’s natural, organic, and vegan! Winemaker Roberto Henriquez farms the land himself and hand-harvests his grapes, utilizing the traditional Pipeño methods of the original Chilean winemak ers. this results in the most natural wine possible, exhibiting the purest expression of the grapes and the soil in which they grow.Corinto super Estrella is an orange wine, a type of white wine that experi ences extended contact with the grape skins and seeds during fermentation. this process pulls color and tannins from the grape skins, and results in an orange-hued wine with substantial body, bold flavors, and honeyed aromas. Made from 100% Chasselas grapes, this wine opens with vibrant aromas of tropical fruit that continue on the palate. the bright flavors are balanced by re freshing acidity, herbal notes, and a touch of minerality. this wine is limited and only available in magnum-sized bottles (1.5 liters – twice the size of a standard wine bottle), as it’s designed to be shared! As always, if you have any wine-re lated questions, or fun wine adventures to share, please email me any time at michael@passionvines.comDrinkpassionately,Michael Michael Bray is the founder of and director of operations at Passion Vines Wine & Spirit Company in Somers Point and Egg Harbor Township. Nu trition By Nancy Adler S low-cooking can be a healthier way to prepare your meals. slow-cooking does not compromise the integrity of essential nutrients in the foods. In fact, lowering the temperature may preserve nu trients better than when food is cooked rapidly on high heat. t he perks of slow-cooking extend beyond increasing the bioavailability of nutrients in plant foods. slow-cooking has gained momentum as it enhances flavor, is kind to your pocketbook and requires minimal effort. Plus, of course, it offers a boost in nutrition! slow-cooking is arguably one of the safest ways to cook meat. Charred and grilled meats have been linked with inflammation, diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Also, try to use lots of carrots and spinach in your recipes as these carry lutein, an antioxidant that helps fight eye disease. Another superstar ingre dient is canned tomatoes. they offer tons of nutritional perks. the power of the tomato includes lycopene, which is linked to heart protection, cancer prevention and improved mood. tomatoes can be used in soups andsstews.othenext time you find yourself wondering what’s for dinner, slowcook your meal! Please enjoy my healthy recipe in my cookbook “Nancy’s Recipes for Life,” available at my Linwood office location and Capellas Oil and Vinegar store in Ocean City.

By Krystle J Bailey T ucked away on the corner of Porter Avenue in Atlantic City, a cozy, family-owned deli has been serving mouth watering subs with a side of life advice and love for over 40 years. Brian and Carmen Lowe, better known as spanky and Mrs. spank, are often referred to as the grandparents of the Chelsea HeightsCarmen, neighborhood.whomoved to s outh Jersey from Puerto Rico in the 1960s, reminisces about the heyday of Atlantic City. she tells stories of a time when they’d close the deli then dance the rest of the night away at the old teddy’s West End, or spanky would sweep the billiards table clean at Mcg ettigan’s. the neighborhood has since been de veloped, and old nightclubs have been replaced by car dealerships and new bars, but spanky & son subs and Deli has stood the test of time. Walking into spanky & son deli is like coming home. Whether you’ve been eating cheesesteaks on the corner for years or you’re new to the neighborhood, you get the same expe rience. spanky and Carmen welcome guests with open arms, offering them a warm meal and great conversation. they light up as they share news about the neighbors and their new babies, career accomplishments, marriage proposals, and more. Locals have de scribed their trips to spanky’s as “a therapy session and a sandwich” and “like hanging out in the barbershop.”

Nothing lights up spanky and Car men’s lives as much as their 10-year-old pug, tin tin, who you can find painted on the wall outside of spanky & son. tin tin’s personal dinner menu spans well beyond what is served at spanky’s.

Carmen, who is smitten with her pug, serves up veal and lamb chop for the family pup, along with other delicacies.

Rick Haney, who has been eating at spanky’s for decades, says, “this is where you come to get your news.”

As she flips through hundreds of pic tures of her beloved tin tin, Carmen beams with pride at her fur baby. “Dogs make you a better person,” shares Carmen, who never enjoyed four-legged pets until her son gave her tin tin as a gift a decade ago. Now tin tin and his neighborhood pals are celebrated in a mural outside of spanky & son. What began as a painting to cel ebrate their family pup quickly evolved to incorporate neighborhood dogs, including Atlantic City Councilman george tibbitt’s dog. In case the food, love, and com munity being served at spanky & son weren’t enough, visitors can also enjoy a dose of nostalgia with the dozens of memorabilia items from the Little Ras cals plastered along the walls. spanky and t in t in have often been asked for photos and autographs, as many have believed that he was the original spanky from the timeless movie. t he community is what makes spanky & son such a local’s favorite. spanky and Carmen don’t take that lightly. they are known for serving ev eryone, from the Chief of Police to the neighborhood kid with $3 in his pocket. When the casinos were originally being built, spanky and Carmen worked day and night feeding the construction workers all of their meals. On Christ mas, everyone who walks through the door gets a free sandwich and a soda, and the tips that are collected through out the year are used to buy local kids Christmas gifts. spanky and Carmen don’t blink at the opportunity to serve a family in need. Just this month, they raised $2,500 for a young girl in the neighborhood who needed corrective eye“Wesurgery.serve everyone, no matter how much they have. I have to admit, it’s weird to com pose a headline for a series that I haven’t watched one episode of yet. I’ll double down and admit that part of the reason I haven’t watched the highly recommended “Better Call saul” is because I still have yet to watch the series that the character originated on, and that’s “Breaking Bad”. Now, before you toss me aside and dismiss me, please know that they are both on my list and very much going to be watched! I feel it’s only right to watch “Breaking Bad” with Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul first before then turning my attention to the highly-acclaimed “Better Call saul” with Bob Odenkirk. since I’m starting off this week on the small screen, I’ll continue by writing about a new series on Amazon Prime that you might find interesting. It’s “A League of their Own”, the t V series. Inspired by Penny Marshall's 1992 film, the new series “A League of their Own”, follows in the footsteps of that beloved original, once again focusing on a team of women who fight to play professional baseball at the height of World War II. Like the film, the show is a joyous celebration of America's favorite pastime, following the Rockford Peaches as they compete in the All-American girls Professional Baseball League. unlike the film, co-creators Abbi Jacobson and Will graham have tried to expand the world that Marshall helped in troduce, focusing on new stories and new characters within the world of women's baseball. some of those stories include themes that the movie only hinted at, like sexuality and race. I watched all eight epi sodes and enjoyed the acting and writing very much. Here’s hoping the Peaches get a second season.

Goodbye to 'Better Call Saul'

That's Entertainment By Pete Thompson

I’ve written about “ the Orville” be fore, and it’s on the move again. the first two seasons were on regular FOX tele vision, and then the pandemic hit. When the series returned, season 3 dropped on Hulu, but now all three seasons are available on Disney+ and I would recom mend you give it a chance. Creator seth MacFarlane is best known for his work with “Family guy”, “American Dad”, and movies like “ ted”, but “ the Orville” is so much more than just a sitcom in space. I’ve found season 3 to be a great blend of drama and comedy, and with its move to Disney+ hopefully there will be more eyeballs on it and it gets renewed for a season 4. the last streaming item I want to write about is on Apple t V+. I only signed up for the service to watch the Phillies game, but stumbled across one of my favorite animated characters of all-time and that’s snoopy from Charles M. schulz’s Peanuts comic strip. Apple t V has the snoopy show and snoopy in space. I may be in my 50’s, but you’re never too old to enjoy the adventures of the famous beagle and his friend Woodstock. Count me in! One of the reasons I didn’t start this column off with the box office results is because they weren’t very good for any of the films that are out right now. the Brad Pitt Action-Comedy Bullet train remained on top, but you can tell that kids are starting to go back to school in some states, parents are recalibrating for the Fall. With that said, I did finally A League Of Their Own - TV Series on Amazon Prime Better Call Saul - I need to watch this AND Breaking Bad

get to my favorite theater, tilton square at 331 tilton Road in Northfield, to see Minions: the Rise of g ru. What’s funny is, I decided to check it out early, for a 2:35p showing. Here’s the breakdown of the audience for the show I went to see: lots of KIDs , a few grandparents & par ents, and me. Ha ha ha. I’m not sure what I thought I was going to walk into, but I was encouraged to see so many children attending the movies and enjoying the show. At a brisk hour and 35 minutes, it holds your attention too. One last item about movies in the theater, and that’s a recommendation that if you do have little ones, maybe take them to see “E.t. the Extra-terrestrial” on the big screen while it’s out. It’s the 40th anniversary of the steven spielberg classic, and the tilton square theater is showing it at 4:00p and 7:00p in IMAX. this is one of my favorite movies of alltime, and I would highly recommend you to take your little ones, nieces & nephews, and grandchildren to check it out in all its glory. 40 years later, the story of Elliott, a boy who befriends an extraterrestrial dubbed E.t., still resonantes! While I’m closing up the discussion about box office films, I have to acknowl edge the death of actress Anne Heche at age 53. Ms. Heche, who won a Daytime Emmy early in her career and whose films included “Donnie Brasco” and “ six Days, seven Nights,” had been critically injured in a car crash in California.

In a 2017 interview with south Jersey Magazine, Heche shared how her child hood at the Jersey shore sparked her interest in pursuing a performing arts career. she had moved 11 times in her childhood, and said that she had once lived in an old house on Ventnor Avenue in Atlantic City, filled with old clothing that grew her imagination. When Heche was 12-years-old, she moved to Ocean City with her family. " that's where I first became an actress," Heche told the mag azine. "I literally started singing for my supper, right on the Boardwalk. I would flip burgers and sing show tunes to get people to come to our stand," Heche said. Ocean City Fishing Club’s 45th Boys’ & Girls’ Surf Fishing Tournament

A fter a two-year absence due to the Covid pandemic, the Ocean City Fish ing Club’s annual Boys’ & g irls’ surf Fishing tournament re turned saturday with a beach packed with avid young anglers and their Aboutfamilies.110boys and girls participated this year, just shy of the 115 who entered the tournament when it was last held in 2019. With family and friends attending to support their young anglers, the beach quickly filled with about 400 people, fishing and observing. “ the weather certainly helped the turnout,” said Ed Hoban, who runs the annual tournament for OCFC. “We really didn’t know how many kids to expect after we postponed the tour nament for two years, but this strong turnout is just great.” under clear blue skies with a mild breeze that kept temperatures mod erate for August, the children, ranging in age from eight to 16 years old, took up positions on the north end beach at the foot of the Ocean City-Longport bridge and fished from 10 a.m. to noon. When the fishing concluded, they caught a total of 61 fish in two hours. Opened in 1901, it was one of the earliest looping roller coasters in the United States. This racing coaster featured an oval loop, reducing the g-forces produced by the earlier Coney Island Flip Flap Railway with a circular loop. Despite these design improvements, the ride was reported to be unpleasant. This, paired with the ride's low capacity (only four individuals could ride the coaster every five minutes), led to its last ride in 1912. 77August 18, 2022

Inflation is cooling M o rtgage Minute By Jerry Kanefsky L ast week the u s . Bureau of Labor statistics released their Consumer Price Index and it showed that overall inflation came in cooler than ex pectations of 0.2% and remained flat for the month of July. Annual inflation cooled as well and declined from 9.1% to 8.5%. Core CPI, which removes volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.3% in July, but again was less than the 0.5% which was expected. Year over year, Core CPI, remained flat at 5.9%. Digging deeper into this report, the rent component rose by 0.7% and is now up 6.3% year over year. Energy prices fell 4.6% for the month of July, but are still up 33% from a year ago. gasoline prices fell 7.7% and are up 44% year over year. used cars fell by 0.4%, but like the majority of the other sectors, they are still up year over year showing a 6.6% increase. Food costs continued to rise in price and are now up an other 1.1% in July, bringing the annual gain to around 11%. Once this inflation report was re leased, bond prices increased slight ly which caused mortgage rates to improve incrementally mid-week. the bond market and interest rates hold an inverse relationship. When bonds increase in price, mortgage rates drop and vice versa. Also, because this CPI report showed a cooling of inflation, the Fed is now taking a second look at their next move. Analysts were thinking that the Fed might hike rates again at their s eptember meeting by another 75 basis points, but after this latest CPI release some were saying it might only be 50 basis points now. there is one more CPI report that is due for re lease before the Fed's next meeting. How that breaks down inflation can certainly sway the Fed's next rate hike decision. Jerry Kanefsky of Advisors Mortgage Group has been a loan officer since 1992.
