August is always bittersweet for me. I love the low hum of the crickets in the evenings, the blooming crepe myrtles, and the baby clams in the sand at the ocean's edge. Yet I feel a sense of urgency to have "done it all" and made it a memorable summer. I look over our initial summer "bucket list" and wonder how I will make it happen with only a few weeks of summer remaining. As we move towards the middle of August, I remind myself and encourage you to hold onto summer with both hands. Make time to dip your toes in the ocean, go sailing or see that band you've been talking about. We still have a few more weeks to get in those adventures and make memories with our loved ones. No tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic…just lots of dust Weather By Dan Skeldon
T
he Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1, and the first month of the season saw three early tropical storms, Alex, Bonnie, and Colin. But since then, only crickets, no tropical mischief. Of course, that’s not a complaint. And no, it’s not because of the cold water that’s been a semi-permanent feature off the South Jersey coast for much of this summer. The water where hurricanes normally form in the eastern Atlantic is actually quite warm. If you’ve been enjoying the five straight weeks with no named storms in the entire Atlantic basin, be sure to thank Africa. Specifically, you can direct that gratitude towards the 3 million plus square miles of the Sahara Desert. What do millions of square miles of
African sand have to do with the lack of hurricanes so far this season? Well, it’s an abundance of Saharan dust that has been a fixture over the tropical breeding grounds of the Atlantic so far this season. Trillions upon trillions, or perhaps it’s quadrillions or quintillions, of dust particles are carried from the Sahara by the tropical trade winds, and have taken up residence over the waters of the Atlantic Ocean for more than a month now. It’s not thick enough where you can see it, and it doesn’t cause any major health concerns. But meteorologically, it does a couple of things. First, if you’ve ever been in the tropics when there is a lot of Saharan dust around, you may have seen some of the most brilliant sunrises and sunsets you’ve ever recalled. Dust particles can help to further scatter the sunlight in the atmosphere, and create vivid colors when the sun is low on the horizon early and again late in the day. But with respect to hurricane season, the dry and dusty air prohibits tropical waves from building thunderstorms, and severely limits the potential of any wave from organizing into a tropical system. So in a way, the ocean becomes
a “desert” of sorts, void of any organized tropical activity. And that of course is a great thing for us, from the East Coast to the Gulf Coast and through the Caribbean, at least for now. So what does this mean for the forecast of our seventh straight above average hurricane season? Nothing much, at least not yet. Let’s remember the peak of the Atlantic season doesn’t occur until September. Furthermore, more than 75% of all tropical activity usually takes place from mid-August through late October. While there is occasionally a stronger and notable tropical storm or hurricane in June or July, the tropics are more like a simmering pot during the first few months of hurricane season. August, September, and October are more like that pot coming to a rapid boil, and sometimes boiling over as storm after storm can form rapid fire, at least during an active year. Once the Saharan dust clears, which it eventually should, the biggest obstacle to tropical development will be gone. Much of the ocean water in the Atlantic remains warmer than average, except that small pocket of cool water off our coast of course, and other factors still favor an active season in terms of storm numbers. However, we did lose five weeks thanks to the Sahara Desert, and that has trimmed most hurricane forecasts by a storm or two. Remember an average season brings 14 named storms to the Atlantic, 7 of which become hurricanes. We’ve seen six straight seasons of above average activity, and this should be the seventh year despite the recent lull. So yes, an active mid-August through mid-October
is still the call for this year. And remember, no matter how many storms form, it only takes one to define a season. So the name Danielle will be up next, and she’s actually been on deck since early July. The rest of the 2022 Atlantic names are: Danielle, Earl, Fiona, Gaston, Hermine, Ian, Julia, Karl, Lisa, Martin, Nicole, Owen, Paula, Richard, Shary, Tobias, Virginie, and Walter. Of all those names, Hermine may sound rather familiar. It was the storm that canceled many plans along the Jersey Shore over Labor Day weekend back in 2016, the last time this list of names was used. Of course, the storm largely stayed just off the coast, sparing the shore but not the reputation of meteorologists. Here’s hoping any Hermine this year, and any other storm for that matter, stays safely offshore. And even though it would mean an incorrect forecast, here’s hoping that dust from Africa remains stubbornly in place the rest of hurricane season. But as that is unlikely and as we enter the peak of hurricane season, remember to always be prepared, and stay storm ready! Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

n June 18, 2022, an illegal campfire sparked a wildfire that burned over four days. More than 13,500 acres went up in flames, sending smoke tens of miles away to beach towns like Atlantic City. This historic fire, known today as the Mullica River Wildfire, ranks as the 17th largest forest fire in New Jersey history. It forced 50 people to evacuate the two campgrounds close to the fire. Hundreds of protected pine trees and an unknown number of animals were negatively impacted by the blaze. People in towns miles
"That fire affected 80 miles of hiking trails and biking trails, 15 miles of our river systems, and completely burned over one of our campgrounds," Auermuller said. He warned visitors and residents to consider the consequences of their actions, given that most forest fires are started by humans. “We don’t know if they are accidental or intentional,” he said. Today, almost two months since the initial fire, the areas of Wharton State Forest that were burned are starting to show signs of rebirth. Between charred, black pine trees, little green sprouts are shooting up from the ground. Tree carcasses have become vessels for new plants, and birds are singing across the forest, signaling a return of creatures to their old home. Greg Pope, a professor of environmental science at Montclair State University, says these pines need regular forest fires to regenerate and stay healthy.

“This forest is like a phoenix,” said Pope. “It’s eternal because every couple of decades, fire helps it become reborn.” Pope explained that forest fires burn underbrush and dead organic matter. When too much decay blocks new plants from sprouting from the forest floor, a controlled burn becomes necessary to clear the area and unlock nutrients for creatures like worms that live below the surface. Smoking in Casinos: A Controversy Workers pushing lawmakers for a ban

ince the birth of casinos worldwide, gambling has been synonymous with smoking. A group of bachelorettes smoke hand-rolled cigarettes as they play the slots. “Hit me,” mumbles a man with a cigar in his mouth, confident that he will win this round of blackjack. Smoking, once a commonplace habit, has been banned in seemingly every other indoor venue, from restaurants to hospitals to fitness centers to department stores. Outdoor properties like amusement parks and festival grounds often only allow smoking in designated areas. What makes the casinos different? Pete Nacarelli, a Borgata dealer and a leader of a group of Atlantic City casino workers pushing for a full indoor smoking ban, said Tuesday in a press statement creating smoking areas doesn’t go far enough. "A casino worker living paycheck to paycheck should not have to risk their health by working in a smoking area just to get by," Naccarelli said.
"But that's exactly what would happen, and the most vulnerable workers would suffer most. Legislators should recognize the problematic scenario this would create and reject this half-baked idea." A bill, outlining a ban on smoking inside AC’s nine casinos, has sat untouched in the Democrat-controlled state Legislature since February. An identical bill died in last year’s session, even though Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy promised he will sign it if it passes. The legislation would close a loophole in New Jersey’s indoor smoking law that makes casinos virtually the only indoor workplaces in the state where smoking continues to be allowed. The Casino Association of New Jersey, a lobbying group representing the Atlantic City casinos, opposes a smoking ban, claiming it would lead to job loss and eventual closure of the businesses.

Camille Blackburn has been a dealer at Golden Nugget since 2012. The Pleasantville native says that she serves smokers almost daily, but is somewhat concerned about the negative impact on her health. “I’ve got three kids, and I don’t wanna drop dead before they graduate from high school. Creating smoking areas feels like a good compromise,” she said. According to the Center for Disease Control, secondhand smoke cause a plethora of health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, miscarriages, stroke, lung cancer, and SIDS in exposed infants. A CDC study reported that older children whose parents smoked in their home were more likely to develop asthma and other respiratory ailments. Alejandro Nguyen has been gambling at Resorts since the 1980s. The Philadelphia native takes a train into Atlantic City and spends a couple weekends each year playing the slots and improving his poker skills. “I never smoke in my normal life,” he said. “But when I’m having fun on the floor by myself, I like to have a smoke. It relaxes me. If the casinos ban smoking
entirely, I guess I’ll have to find another casino in another city.” In Nevada, only two casinos consider themselves smoke-free. Over 20 states have either banned or limited smoking inside casinos. Several states that legalized casinos over the last couple of decades, such as Maryland, launched with non-smoking casino floors. COVID-19 has given casinos in states such as Pennsylvania an opportunity to ban smoking for the sake of public health. Gaming consultant Andrew Klebanow at C3 Gaming authored a research report that indicated gamblers haven’t altered their habits since the pandemic, even when smoking was eliminated. “Older generations will be affected the most if this ban takes place,” reads the report. A few days ago, Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, which is advocating for the smoking ban legislation in New Jersey, cited the C3 Gaming study and also said the legislation has the backing of more than half of the state’s lawmakers. “It’s only a matter of time, and we will rejoice when that time comes,” the group said in a press statement. As of Aug. 8,, no committee meetings have been scheduled with the smoking ban on their agenda, although over half of the New Jersey Legislature has signed on as a sponsor or cosponsor of the bill. Until it's passed, or individual casinos take action, smokers need not worry about enjoying their fix while they play and parlay.

he Pamper Scamper, Ocean City’s annual baby crawling race, was held Tuesday, August 9 on the beach at Sixth Street. The event is a prelude to the city’s 112th annual Baby Parade on Thurs. August 11. The young racers were placed in the middle of a silk parachute on the sand. The first to crawl off the parachute into a parent or guardian’s waiting arms was declared the winner. Parents kneel at the edge of the parachute waving favorite objects in an attempt to get their entries to move. This is strictly a crawling race. Contestants who stand up and walk are heartily cheered … and then disqualified. Donald B. Chatterbox gets new look, revamped menu New owners take over Ocean City landmark restaurant

t's hard to miss the bright pink façade of the famous Chatterbox, located at Ninth Street and Central Avenue. The iconic building has been a staple of the Ocean City community for generations of customers. Now in its 85th year in business,
its new owners are bringing in some new menu items, with a fresh take on popular classics. The Chatterbox was recently purchased by William Bonaforte, who is also the owner of Green Eggs Café, a chain of brunch-style restaurants in Philadelphia. The group also owns another popular city eatery called Stateside, located on Passyunk Avenue. Stephen Slaughter, COO of the company, spoke about the purchase. “He saw the love for the building and saw it as an opportunity to do something special,” Slaughter said. Slaughter is overseeing operations for The Chatterbox this summer. A

former nightclub operator, Slaughter began his culinary journey at the age of 13 prior to finding success at Green Eggs Café. “I wound up working in the business and learning under good owners and managers,” he said. The famed restaurant has also enlisted the help of Jeannine Errico, a proud local and graduate of Ocean City High School. Diners will instantly notice several new and exciting changes. The entire menu has been updated to include several new items, while presenting a new take on some popular classics. Their mouth -w atering cheesesteak comes highly recommended, as does the newly added veggie burger, made using the freshest plant-based ingredients. Looking for a light lunch? Try their Baja chicken salad, topped with delicate ranch dressing. And, of course, you can’t leave out dessert. Their high-end, over-the-top milkshakes are also a major hit among hungry patrons.

Their specialized drink menu consists of delicious and refreshing mocktails, while diners will be delighted by delectable food offerings, such as the pan roasted salmon, garden orzo, or 12 oz. New York strip. This is the perfect place to enjoy a culinary experience with a special guest, or share a meal or two with friends. In 1937, the Chatterbox originally opened just one block away, at the corner of Ninth and Wesley, under the creative vision of Jean Campbell. Three years later, the restaurant moved to the distinctive pink building, where it remains today. The exterior was designed by Vivian B. Smith, an Ocean City High School graduate who designed many iconic buildings in the South Jersey region. His most prominent projects included The Flanders Hotel, Ocean City Music Pier, and Ventnor City Hall. The history and charm of this vibrant Ocean City landmark is not just written on the walls, it can also be
found in the individuals who helped secure its legacy. Before pursuing a career in Hollywood, Grace Kelly spent her summers working at The Chatterbox as a waitress. Her success as a star of the silver screen led her to an Academy Award and Golden Globe for her role in the film, “Mogambo.” She later married Prince Rainier III of Monaco, earning her the title: Princess Grace of Monaco.
Over the years The Chatterbox has changed hands multiple times. Bob Becotte purchased the restaurant in 1968 before handing it down to the Recipi family only a few short years later. The Recipi family operated the businesses for several decades. Some minor renovations are expected to take place during the off-season with the restaurant set to close temporarily sometime during
the shoulder season, and re-open in March of next year. While small upgrades have been made to the outdoor dining space, much of the interior will stay intact. As for the future of the restaurant, Slaughter says that plans are in place to incorporate the Green Eggs concept, while keeping the famous pink exterior and passion that locals and visitors have come to know over the decades and continuing to pay homage to the original restaurant. The Chatterbox is located at 500 E. Ninth St. in Ocean City. It’s open 2-9 p.m., Monday-Friday, with a full brunch menu offered 8 a.m.-noon on weekends. Fra Diavolo was an Angry Man

I
f you thought Fra Diavolo was a spicy sauce, you are partially correct. Fra Diavolo also was one angry man. In Naples in the 1770s there lived a young boy by the name of Michele Pezza. He nearly died from a childhood illness and as part of an old Italian tradition, he and other youngsters who recovered from serious illness were dressed as monks on the second Sunday after Easter for a procession in honor of the patron saint of sick children, St. Francis of Paola. Michele was apparently such a notorious handful on these solemn occasions that someone labeled him “fra diavolo,” meaning “brother devil.” This highly combustible nickname stuck and, in an extreme example of a self-fulfilling prophecy, Pezza became an infamous hothead and ferocious
Italian bandit known as Fra Diavolo. In 1798 he was pardoned for two murders and hired to lead Italian guerilla forces fighting against the French who were invading Naples; the French ultimately won. Pezza continued for years to try to overthrow the invasion, but ultimately was captured and hung in Naples in a public marketplace. His life story is fascinating, one I think you’d enjoy learning more about. Today, Fra Diavolo refers to a spicy tomato sauce served over linguine or spaghetti. The sauce is made by sautéing chopped onions in butter and olive oil, then adding tomatoes (canned or fresh), crushed red pepper, garlic, white wine and seafood. (Some versions of Chicken Fra Diavolo are made without tomato sauce.) But what sets it apart from similar sauces is the recipe’s heavy use of chilies or red pepper flakes, which deliver the infamous heat, and its use primarily with seafood. Lobster Fra Diavolo was probably the original recipe developed by Italian-Americans in the 1940s-1950s. However, variations like Shrimp Fra Diavolo and Seafood Fra Diavolo, made with clams, mussels, scallops, and calamari, also appear on many menus.

1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined ● 1 teaspoon salt, plus additional as needed ● 1 teaspoon dried, crushed red pepper flakes ● 3 tablespoons olive oil, plus 1 to 2 tablespoons ● 1 medium onion, sliced ● 1 (14-1/2 ounce) can diced tomatoes ● 3 garlic cloves, chopped ● 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano leaves ● 3 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley leaves ● 3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil leaves ● Spaghetti or linguine, if desired 1. Toss the shrimp in a medium bowl with 1 teaspoon salt and red pepper flakes. ●
2. Heat 3 tablespoons olive oil in a heavy large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the shrimp and sauté for about a minute, Toss and continue cooking until just cooked through, about 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a large plate; set aside. 3. Add the onion to the same skillet, adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil to the pan, if necessary. Sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the tomatoes with their juices, wine, garlic and oregano. Simmer until the sauce thickens, about 10 minutes. 4. Return the shrimp and any accumulated juices to the tomato mixture; toss to coat, and cook for about a minute so the flavors meld together. 5. Stir in the parsley and basil. Season with more salt, to taste, and serve plain or over pasta.
But what, you may ask, about Arrabiata sauce, which also is hot and spicy? The name of that sauce comes from the Italian arrabbiata, which means angry. Arrabiata sauce
delicious morsels out of their shells. Seafood Fra Diavolo is available at my restaurant, Mama Mia’s in Marmora. Since shrimp are available at a more reasonable price than lobster,
is a light marinara or red sauce, minus any seafood, that may have originated in the Lazio region of Central Italy. It was perfected in Rome in the 1920s by chef Antonio Cecchini, whose restaurant was appropriately called "Le Arrabbiate." When you eat Pasta Arrabiata, you can twirl it with a knife and fork. But with Pasta Fra Diavolo, you get most of the seafood in the shell, so you may need to use your hands to get all the

Mini Golf Course Review on the OC Boardwalk A Summer Series
Overall, Goofy Golf earned an eight out of ten in our books for the opposite reasons we positively rated Congo Queen. Goofy Golf offered something creative and different and a little weird at a cheap price. The course was bold and unlike every other course in Ocean City. Although Goofy Golf wasn’t exactly perfect, it wasn’t boring by any means. Next week, Steffen and I will hit the boards once again to play two courses of the following mini golf spots: Haunted Golf, Seaport Village

I
t started with a big dream. What if we played every mini golf course on the boardwalk so families can make informed decisions on where to spend their afternoon/evening? Event coordinator, photographer and journalist Steffen Klenk and I (Sarah Fertsch) set out on a journey we will never forget. The two of us decided to play two courses every week for the rest of summer. We met on the boardwalk this past Wednesday to play Congo Falls and Goofy Golf, which we realized were two very different courses. Congo Falls is a South Jersey staple, with over four different courses in Margate and Ocean City. The OC boardwalk location houses three courses: Solomon’s Mine, Lost City, and Congo Queen. The golf attendant informed us that Lost City is a completely indoor course, Solomon’s Mine is the most popular course, and Congo Queen is the most challenging. Steffen and I chose to play Congo Queen. The course was clean and modern, with holes ranging from easy to expert. There weren’t many obstacles, but the ones we encountered were nautical in theme (pier poles, ship equipment, and wooden planks). Congo Queen, like all of the courses within Congo Falls, had a portion of the course indoors. The cavern, consisting of about seven holes, was humid and hot. A singing monkey in a cage surrounded by wildcat pelts entertained the players. This element was the only Congo-themed decor on the entire course. The holes were fairly simple. Each hole was unique but didn’t

excite us as we advanced through the course. Congo Falls is priced at $9 per golfer in the evenings, with a chance to win a free game at the end of each round. Overall, we rated Congo Falls Congo Queen seven out of ten. Our next adventure was Goofy Golf, located between Castaway Cove and the Music Pier. The course, as we entered, was bright and colorful. Families competed to shoot basketball hoops, pitch a fastball and throw touchdowns. The mini golf course was priced at $5 per player, which was the lowest price on the entire boardwalk. You definitely get what you pay for. There is no doubt that Goofy Golf has aged significantly, and it's unclear whether engineers were consulted in the construction of each hole. On several occasions, our golf balls would get stuck in various obstacles, needing a little push to continue down the green. Whomever designed Goofy Golf was certainly creative. Each hole was delightfully different, ranging from putting into a basketball hoop, skeeball game, hockey rink and chicken coop. Almost every hole was guarded by a giant, colorful animal, some being cute (like the pink hippo eating a hoagie) or the massive python, constricting a person desperately reaching out for help. Because the holes weren’t perfectly level, or functional, families spent longer on each hole than expected. Long lines behind certain holes led to a lull in excitement, with some kids anxiously leaping and playing around the course. Finishing 18 holes took over an hour.

arden clubs provide a way for both seasoned and novice gardeners to come together and share their knowledge, experiences, and passion for gardening. Monthly meetings may feature guest speakers and discus-
sions about upcoming events. Often garden club projects involve beautifying their towns or volunteering to help in the community. Shore Local News would like to feature a few of the garden clubs in our area so our readers can see what’s out there. Each garden club has its own unique personality and story behind its beginnings. Sweet Scents Garden Club celebrated their tenth anniversary this year. Founded by Bayview Garden Nursery in Northfield in April 2012, this garden club frequently hosts guest speakers and holds workshops on seasonal topics. The club’s dues

The Green Thumb Garden Club has been growing in Somers Point since 1952. The club meets on the first Tuesday of the month from September to June at 7 p.m. at the Somers Point Senior Center on Ambler Road. Annual dues are $15, and they have speakers on a range of topics throughout the year. Volunteers are encouraged to work on community projects, including planting and maintaining the flower containers at the four corners at Route 52, the Somers Point Mansion kitchen garden, the Somers Point Library beds, and the butterfly garden at Kennedy Park. Newer on the scene, the Egg Harbor City Garden club was started in the spring of 2021. It was a collaboration between Sustainable Egg Harbor City (Nanette Galloway), Coalition for a Safe Community (Candace Negron), and Egg Harbor City resident Kim Hesse. Their objectives are to brainstorm ideas for existing gardens, connect with the community through gardening, help maintain existing gardens, and plan garden-related activities for children. The Club’s second meeting was held in March of this year at the log cabin on Philadelphia Avenue and Buerger Street. The twelve gardeners in attendance had cake, coffee, and tea as they introduced themselves and collaborated on the group’s upcoming agenda. They also had a seed and plant exchange. In 2021, the group

The garden club has been maintaining gardens at Rotary Park and Peace Pilgrim Park. They have also trimmed trees and cleaned up Lincoln Park prior to the Arbor Day celebration. Presently, they are mainly keeping up with the watering of planters around Egg Harbor City. They are looking forward to a project in the near future working with school children to make garden art from bowling balls. New members are welcome! For more information, contact: Kim Hesse at kaahesse@ gmail.com. One of the oldest clubs in our area, The Little Gardens Club, was founded in 1922 by women that summered in Atlantic City. Most of the members
of that time were coming from larger homes and gardens in the Philadelphia and mainland areas. They considered their gardens at the shore their “Little Gardens”, thus the name. From the beginning, money raised by hosting garden tours was used to invest back into the community. During the war when soldiers were in the Atlantic City hospital, the money
was used for flowers and magazines for recovering soldiers. Today, the garden tour, which is always held on the weekend after the Fourth of July, continues to be a mainstay of the group. The garden club also hosts bus trips to gardens and arboretums, such as Longwood Gardens, Jenkins Arboretum and Gardens, and Chanticleer Garden. The garden club will have regular monthly meetings resuming in September. The group hosts speakers on a variety of subjects and also holds a holiday workshop. 40th Annual Carole Schiavo Memorial – Kids Swim Raises $13,000 for Shore Medical Center
O
n July 8, 105 young swimmers raised more than $13,000 during the 40th annual Carole Schiavo Kids Swim for Health held at the Mainland Recreation Association pool in Linwood. Members of the Auxiliary of Shore Medical Center took their places on the pool deck to count the number of laps swimmers completed. Swimmers ages 5-18 completed 6,900 laps and raised over $13,000. Prior to swimming, coach Mike Schiavo set an incentive lap goal for each age group. 61 out of the 105 winners met or exceeded their lap goal. The first event held in 1982 was called the Kids for Kids Swim-A-Thon and funded special pediatric projects

at Shore Medical Center. The event was renamed in memory of longtime auxiliary member Carole Schiavo. To date, the group has raised over $310,000, with proceeds now going toward cancer care at Shore. At the pizza party awards ceremony held on July 21, Brenda Martello, Chairperson of the Auxiliary, thanked Coach Schiavo for always supporting the Kids Swim for Health, and presented him with a plaque commemorating the 40th anniversary of the event. Martello presented trophies to the top three swimmers who swam the most laps in each age category, as well to the top three fundraisers in each age category. She also presented a $10 Visa gift card to all swimmers who met or exceeded their incentive lap goal.

Combine vinegar, beer and Old Bay in a large soup pot and bring to a boil over medium heat on the stove. Place a steaming basket or colander over the boiling liquid, sturdy enough to hold the crabs, just above the liquid. Place crabs in the basket and steam them for 20-30 minutes until the blue color is gone and the crabs become red or orange. Serve with leftover Old Bay and melted butter. Enjoy!
Mussels in Lemon Garlic Sauce
Ingredients: ● 1 pound of half-shell mussels ● 1 cup of heavy cream ● 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter ● 1 cup of dry white wine ● 1 lemon, juiced and zested ● 4 cloves of garlic, crushed ● 1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes ● 1 yellow onion, finely diced ● ½ cup of fresh parsley, chopped ● Salt and pepper to taste In a large skillet, melt butter and add diced onion. Cook down until fragrant and translucent. Add white wine and reduce by a third. Stir in cream and let simmer for 2 minutes. Add mussels and let cook covered for approximately 10 minutes. Remove from the heat. Add lemon juice, zest and crushed garlic. Add red pepper flakes, parsley, salt and pepper. Serve warm with bread to dip into the sauce.
Sesame Ginger Grain Bowl with Mackerel
Ingredients: ● 4 ounces of fresh-caught mackerel, skin on ● 1 cup of brown rice We've Moved! ● 1 carrot, ribboned
½ avocado, sliced ½ large cucumber, diced ● 1 scallion, thinly sliced ● 1 teaspoon of sesame oil ● 1 teaspoon of grated ginger ● 1 tablespoon of low-sodium soy sauce ● 1 teaspoon of hot sauce ● Salt ● Pepper Prep and wash veggies. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and place the fish on a baking sheet. Use a paper towel to absorb any excess moisture on the mackerel. Sprinkle it with salt and pepper and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Fill a pot with 2 cups of water and rinse rice, then add to the pot. Cook over low heat on the stove until all the water is absorbed, which should take approximately 15 minutes. Cover with a lid to help the rice cook faster. Once the rice is cooked, scoop ⅓ cup into a bowl and top with veggies. In a small bowl, mix together hot sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce and ginger. Once the fish is fully cooked, use a fork to cut up the fish and scoop a serving into the bowl. Top the bowl with the dressing and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Enjoy! ● ●

TidalWave Music Festival Washes over Atlantic City with Country Music

tlantic City has really hit it out of the park with music festivals at the Shore this summer, providing a variety of genres suitable for all listeners. This weekend, AC is going country with the TidalWave Music Festival happening all weekend (August 12th14th) at Atlantic City Beach. None other than Luke Bryan will be headlining the Main Stage on Friday night. Bryan needs no introduction; even non-country music fans know the Country Music Association award winning artist with his songs like “Up”, “Country On”, and “Country Girl (Shake It for Me)”. Opening up for Bryan will be Riley Green and Mitchell Tenpenny. There will also be perfor-
mances by artists such as Lainey Wilson, Breland, with Dee Jay Silver opening the weekend at 2pm on the Main Stage, and Alana Springsteen opening the Next From Nashville Stage (NVN) at 2:15pm. On Saturday, Morgan Wallen, who was a member of both Usher and Adam Levine’s teams on The Voice, will headline the Main Stage at 9:25pm. After his brief stint on The Voice, Wallen was signed to Panacea Records and has since gone on to release twelve number one singles, including recording a song with Florida Georgia Line. Sharing the stage with Wallen will be Hardy, Tracy Lawrence, and more. Filmore will headline the NFN stage at 7pm with Seaforth opening at 5:40pm. Then, on Sunday, Grammy-nominated artist Dierks Bentley will close the festival on the Main Stage at 9:25pm. Opening up for Bentley will be Chase Rice and Lauren Alaina on the Main Stage, and Dillon Carmichael will headline the NFN stage. A full breakdown of the schedule for the

Not only will there be great music taking over AC Beach all weekend, but there will also be a wide range of additional activities to keep guests entertained all weekend long. The festival producers are committed to ocean conservation, and they have curated a list of partners to be present in the Conservation Village located inside the festival. These “Conservation Rockstars” will offer interactive activities and opportunities to teach people how they can help save our
oceans. The concept of the Conservation Village was pioneered by Rock the Ocean, whose mission is to, “increase public awareness about the issues impacting the world’s oceans and to support scientific research, education and ocean conservation initiatives through benefit concerts, brand partnerships, and entertainment industry events.” There will be several fundraising efforts over the weekend to support the participating nonprofits, with official Rock The Ocean merchandise on sale. There will also be a live auction in the TidalWave Fest App featuring custom acoustic and electric guitars autographed by TidalWave performing artists, the Best Seats In The House, a private yacht charter, and much more. Adeo Santori: A Life Well Lived
n Saturday, July 30, 2022, ten days after his 95th birthday, Adeo Santori of Margate departed for Heaven's beach to stake an umbrella with chairs to save the perfect spot to spend the day with his family once they arrive. This was his favorite "job" here on Earth on busy summer weekends although it was never that early. Born to Italian immigrants, Adam and Anna (Acitelli) Santori on July 20, 1927, on Florida Avenue in Atlantic City, Adeo not only lived a long life, but also packed a lot of life in the years he lived. During the Great Depression at age 11, he began working at his parents' Italian-American grocery store on the corner of California and Arctic Avenues in Atlantic City when not in school. In the afternoons, Adeo would tend to his delivery route of the AC Press sports section extra. His best customer, Nucky Johnson, would toss him a nickel for the 2 cent paper, giving him a 3 cent tip. Adeo graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1945. Being a fiercely proud American, he immediately enlisted in the Navy. He never got out of training camp, however, as the result of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He always

respected that these two events were a double-edged sword. Adeo later enrolled at Pennsylvania Military Academy as a civilian and graduated with a business degree in 1953. Following the Academy, Adeo worked for E.I. DuPont as a foreman at their nylon factory in Seaford, Delaware. Later, he would return to Atlantic City where he began work in real estate as first an agent then broker in Margate. While maintaining his broker's license he purchased and operated the Pennsylvania Hotel in Atlantic City which he ran for almost 20 years. During this time, Adeo also invested in real estate with his childhood friend and long-time business partner, Andy Patroni. For years they owned and operated the
Ventnor Roller Rink, a place they had both frequented in their youth. With the legalization of casinos, Adeo sold the hotel to Resorts International in the late 70s. Becoming a bit restless, in the early 80s Adeo would lease the Seahorse Motel in Margate which he operated for a handful of years. In 1991, at age 64, Adeo began "working" again, this time for his third son, Andre, at the newly opened Santori's Produce Outlet on Albany Avenue in Atlantic City; coming full circle, so to speak. His constant source of enjoyment and fulfillment had always been interacting with customers (as it was with his guests at his hotels). He was tremendously proud to see the outlet grow to four successful Santori's Produce and Deli Markets now operated by three of his sons. Adeo finally "retired" from active work later in the 90s, but he was always behind the scenes offering advice and he acted as a sounding board for the business until his last few days. Adeo was a proud long-time member of UNICO, an Italian-American service organization, as well as a long-standing board member of the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority to which he was appointed by the Governor of the State of New Jersey. He served for many years as a member of the Margate City Zoning Board where his input was much respected by fellow members. He also served as president of the Margate Little League (a position his sons believed would earn them starting pitcher status… it didn't.) Adeo was famous (or infamous) for organizing yearly July Fourth and Labor Day bashes on the Iroquois Avenue beach and the egg throwing contests that went along with them were legendary. He would remind his guests not to wear white, but they did and they paid the price. He enjoyed making wine in his wine cellar and his kids enjoyed sampling it for him. He was happy to make phone calls to anyone he wanted - just because, and to submit anonymous Letters to the Editor so as to not offend under his name.
Adeo also enjoyed numerous ski vacations with "The Snowflakes", a very fun club indeed; travelling yearly to Florida and Quebec, and attending Philadelphia Flyers home games as a forty plus year season ticket holder. Frank Sinatra? Fuhgeddaboutit! He knew all the lyrics by heart. He loved crabbing with a passion, starting as a youngster during the depression and selling them to his mother's friends for spaghetti with crab sauce. He would later rent boats and take his young family for crabbing trips near Jeffers Landing in Mays Landing. In the 90s he graduated to the big time and for over 25 years would rent a home each summer on the Chesapeake near St. Michaels, MD. There the family would congregate and catch and eat jumbo crabs for six nights straight. Landlubbers were on their own. Of all this, what made Adeo happiest was spending time with his family, of which he was so proud. He cherished his role as patriarch, advisor and mentor yet never forced his opinions upon others. He was wise and shrewd beyond his years, and that's a lot. Of his family, one garnered special attention. When he met Johanne at the Aztec Hotel in Miami Beach, he was hooked, bait, line and sinker. A Quebecoise, he was attracted not only to the mystique of a French Canadian, but also to her beauty and grace. At little under 12 years his junior, she is what kept Adeo young at heart and young of body. She was truly his joie de vivre. Adeo is predeceased by a lot of people and is survived by his wonderful yet heartbroken wife of almost 63 years, Johanne (Lawler). Together they raised four sons; Gino (Carrie), Michael, Andre (JoAnne) and John (Jenifer). He was the beloved Nonna to 9 grandchildren; Ceana Camille, Dominic, Sydney, Madelyn, Luc, Devyn, Anna and Elizabeth. He is also survived by his sister, Alma Pasquale (Ernest) of Florida. Also surviving Adeo are numerous nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters-in-law from both Florida and Quebec. So proud of his heritage, he remained in constant contact with his many cousins in Italy. Ciao tutto e tutta. He was a very happy man and he did it his way. Oh, wait! Hey Dad, remember how when we were kids you used to tell us bedtime stories about the hidden treasure that was buried on our beach by pirates long ago? Well, we just realized that all along the treasure was never hidden and was always by our side; it was you. Please continue to keep an eye on us all. We love and miss you.

I’ll close this tribute to O-N-J with a personal memory as I wasn’t the world’s biggest fan, but I certainly remember my sister Pam and her girlfriends playing the original record & songs from “Grease” over and over again! According to Wikipedia, the original soundtrack album was

I mean, c’mon, is there anyone out there of a certain age that doesn’t know all the words to “Summer Nights”? R.I.P. to Dame Olivia Newton-John. There’s an old saying in the entertainment business that you’re not supposed to lead with death, but I thought that was worthy of leading off this column. And because I did, I can segue to another actor who has passed away at the age of 83, as we say goodbye to actor Roger E. Mosley, best known for his role as “T.C.” from the original “Magnum P.I.” His daughter Ch-a Mosley announced the news on Facebook, saying, "We could never mourn such an amazing man. He would HATE any crying done in his name. It is time to celebrate the legacy he left for us all." Mosley landed his most memorable role opposite Tom Selleck as the titular private investigator Thomas Magnum in the original Magnum P.I. From 1980 to 1988, Mosley played Theodore ``T.C." Thirteen Lives on Amazon Prime now Hoppers, a local helicopter charter and tour van service, who always finds himself roped into Magnum's cases. R.I.P. to “T.C.” In other entertainment news, I wrote about the new movie “Bullet Train” last week. Well, the Brad Pitt led movie chugged into the top spot from the weekend box office with $30 million dollars in its opening weekend. According to Rotten Tomatoes, that’s a decent opening for an R-rated original property, but it remains to be seen if it has staying power. Elsewhere on the box office rankings, it looks like Jordan Peele’s “Nope” will make
a profit, but barely. The three movies of the summer really boil down to “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Thor: Love and Thunder”, and “Minions: The Rise of Gru”. There are two new movies on the streaming services as I think I will check out “Thirteen Lives” on Amazon Prime very soon. You might recall that in 2018, several members of a youth soccer team in Thailand, along with their coach, became trapped in a cave they were exploring when sudden, heavy rains flooded the area and blocked the entrance. Their harrowing rescue took weeks, involved thousands of experts from across the globe who eventually were able to extract them from the cave. Their story has been brought to life by director Ron Howard in “Thirteen Lives”, which stars Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton, and Viggo Mortensen as the core group of men who were essential to the rescue. I’m also stoked to check out “Licorice Pizza” on Netflix as well. The 2021 period comedy drama film is both written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. It stars Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman in their film debuts, alongside an ensemble supporting cast including Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Bradley Cooper, and Benny Safdie. Set in 1973, the film follows the development of a young couple's relationship. I’ve really enjoyed several films from Paul Thomas Anderson, like “Boogie Nights”, “Magnolia”, “Punch-Drunk Love” and “There Will Be Blood”. In fact, I wanted to

see this one in the theater, but never got there. I’m excited to be able to watch it from the comfort of my La-Z-Boy! Which is where I watch all my regular TV shows too. Not on streaming, but debuting this week on HBO for the 17th season is the NFL-based “Hard Knocks”. This year, the HBO cameras are at training camp with the Detroit Lions. If you’re a fan of football, if you’re a fan of excellent storylines, you simply must check out “Hard Knocks”. Hey, if the Lions don’t seem like your cup of tea, former Eagles running back & coach Duce Staley is a key figure in the series this year. Also, Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell is a reality star who’s just waiting in the wings! Elsewhere, my girlfriend and I have been continuing to watch “The Captain” on ESPN about Derek Jeter. That’s been a great series. I also have enjoyed a few episodes of “Who Do You Think You Are?” on NBC. The show from Lisa Kudrow and Dan Bucatinsky takes celebrities and follows them as they discover their heritage and lineage.

Free Activities to Cap Off Summer Moms Vibe: By Krystle J. Bailey

here is no way around it - summer is expensive. Between the growing children eating from sun up to sun down and the commitment to checking off summer bucket lists, the cost of summertime adds up quickly. Just when things are about to slow down, we’re hit with the cost of back-to-school supplies. With a few weeks of summer left, and fun still to be had, I’m looking for all the ways to make budget-friendly memories with my little ones. Here are a few suggestions for moms in the same boat: Playground Passport Make a list of all the local playgrounds you haven’t visited yet. Margate recently added a Lucy The Elephant-themed playground complete with an elephant-trunk
slide. Check out the Imagination Station in Galloway, Birch Grove Park in Northfield, Tony Canale Park in EHT, or Shark Park in Brigantine to get you started. Take a spontaneous drive around the area looking for other parks you haven’t explored yet. Put the Kids to Work Lemonade stands are a summer staple. It’s a great opportunity for the kids to earn some spending cash of their own while learning some business basics. Allow their creativity to run wild from their company’s name to the “uniform” that they will wear at the stand. Grab an old t-shirt and let them use paints and markers to create a work shirt that represents their brand. Have them create a menu, price list, table set up, and work on their customer service voice. While it’s not entirely free, as you’ll have to buy some supplies, it is an affordable way to create amazing summer memories and instill valuable life lessons. Jam Out in the Park If you haven’t hit a summer beach or park concert yet, now is the time. There are free concerts every weekend all around Atlantic County. The kids can wear themselves out as they dance the night away with friends while you sit
back and soak in the smells and sounds of a perfect summer night. Check out our beach and park concert lists in this edition of Shore Local. Old School Summer Put on the sprinkler, give them some water balloons, and tell them not to come inside until they’re completely exhausted, just like our parents did. A few frozen popsicles and a sprinkler can go a long way. Challenge them to put down the technology, go outside, and create their own fun for the day. Check out Pinterest for some backyard fun. Beach It It is the Jersey Shore, after all. There are a few weeks left to get in as many beach days as possible. It's Duck Derby and Floating Quack-a-Palooza Fun in Margate
he Margate Business Association’s Duck Derby raffle will be held on Sunday, August 14 (rain date August 21) with the weighted rubber ducks departing from Ray Scott’s Dock, Amherst Avenue. Activities will begin at 11 am along the Washington Avenue Pier and walkway with the derby beginning at approximately 11:30 am. Guests can watch the ducks race to the finish line from the Washington Avenue Pier. Children can also try their luck at the Duck Chuck, Quack in the Hole, Fishin’ for Fowl and other great activities for some fun prizes. Providing great musical entertainment for the event is USA DJ who will be playing the Chicken Dance for guests to participate and the best chicken (yeah we know it’s a duck derby but it’s close!) Why do I get Wine Headaches? By Michael Bray
W
hat’s the deal with wine headaches? There are a few theories surrounding the main culprit of the dreaded wine headache, and I’ll use today’s article to share my insight. (Quick note: As with anything health-related, if you have questions about whether wine is advisable for you, please consult your doctor.) Sulfites tend to get blamed for wine headaches a lot. While some folks (especially those with asthma) can have sulfite sensitivities, sulfites occur in wine at much lower levels than processed foods like dried fruits and French fries. As such, sulfites are not typically linked to wine headaches.

Histamines could be responsible for headaches in some wine drinkers. Foods that have been aged or fermented (like wine) contain higher levels of histamines, which can cause an inflammatory response in the body. Another potential culprit is tannin, an organic compound found in the skins and seeds of grapes (and many other plants). Red wines get their color, as well as some of their flavor and texture, from extended contact with grape skins and seeds. As such, tannin could be responsible for the so-called “red wine headache.” If you usually experience headaches after red wine, I suggest giving white wine a try. White wines do not experience extended skin contact during the winemaking process, and they have minimal tannins. While histamines and tannin could be to blame in some instances, wine headaches are commonly caused by dehydration. Since wine typically has a higher alcohol content than, say, beer, and it tends to be sipped more slowly over a longer period, we

I would recommend having a full glass of water prior to your first glass of wine and making sure to mindfully hydrate as you continue enjoying your wine. If you still experience wine headaches regardless of these adjustments, it’s possible you have a sensitivity to a specific ingredient in the wine (the higher levels of alcohol, the yeast, etc). Fortunately, there’s a huge diversity of other beverages to sample, from beer, to spirits, to fun and creative non-alcoholic options.

f you want to get all those vital nutrients in your diet, eat salad. People who eat salads every day are the most likely to reach the daily recommendation of fiber and vitamins. Salads are likely to be low in calories and promote healthy weight loss. You can, however, gain weight by eating salads that are laden with high-fat dressing and sodium. Try using a lemon or ginger turmeric vinaigrette for a pop of full flavor that is low in calories. There are a wide variety of salads. Greens, pasta, legumes or grains can be used as a base for salads. There are also mixed salads that incorporate meat, poultry or seafood. Fruit salad is another great option.
Portion size is also crucial when trying to lose weight. Even good foods have calories. Just because it contains green and leafy foods doesn’t mean you’ll lose some weight if all the salad fixings are high in calories and volume. Restaurants can carry the most unhealthy salads. We see the word “salad” on the menu and think it’s the best guilt-free choice. However, that is not always the case. For example, a well-known restaurant carries a salad called “Apple Harvest Salad” on its menu. The calories are 670. It also has 37 grams of fat and 107 milligrams of cholesterol. Clearly, this salad is not the best choice. When you aim to lose pounds, include a macronutrient like protein to make it a complete meal and keep you satiated for hours. Remember, there

need to start off by addressing that each week, I write this column on a deadline and last week’s column was written about two hours PRIOR to knowing the full picture of what moves the Phillies made at the trade deadline. Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski hit a “grand slam” in my opinion and the Phils are fighting to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011. They also are trying to move on from an awkward situation with Pete Rose from their “Alumni Weekend”.

Pete Rose - Hall of Fame player - Hall of Fame jerk Since I last wrote, the Phillies continued their winning ways on the field. Plus, they honored a longtime and beloved employee. So, we’ll address their playoff chances, Pete Rose, and other tidbits from “Alumni Weekend”. The Eagles held their one “open practice” at Lincoln Financial Field, and are now preparing for their first actual preseason game. Not long after that practice, the team announces that one of the more popular veteran players has to have surgery. Finally, the Birds see one of their former coaches go into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. A Sixers guard is back in the area to hold a youth camp. What does back surgery mean for one prominent young Flyers forward? Injuries and age are forcing one of the best female tennis players ever to step away from the game. As I write this, the Phillies are in the second NL wildcard position and pushing the Braves for the top spot and the three games at home if they are the top NL wildcard team. The Phillies are 9-1 in their last ten as I write this, and really the formula is simple. Keep beating the bad teams, and racking up wins! They have seven games left with the Mets and seven games left with the Braves before the end of the season. It appears the Mets will win the division, but if the Phillies want to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011, they need to win some of these games! So, hopefully when I write next week, the Phillies will have swept the Marlins, or at least won two out of three. And, at least two out of four against the Mets. I’m going on Saturday 8/20, and hoping to see a win. One thing that is concerning to me is the attendance for the Phillies. Their highest attendance during “Alumni Weekend” was 35,393. Each game after that was less than 30,000 fans. Well, the Eagles drew an estimated 30,000 fans for an open practice at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday 8/5.

Oh yes, the optimism is “sky-high” as the Birds get ready for the first of three preseason games. One thing that gives me pause is the news that center Jason Kelce had elbow surgery on Tuesday August 9th. The team says it’s just a “routine cleanout” and indications are that he will be ready by the season opener on September 11th. Fingers crossed. My last item with the Eagles is about former coach Dick Vermeil as he goes into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton. A large contingent was on hand for the ceremony, and Vermeil was told he could go longer than the normal 8 minutes. He ended up speaking for 23 minutes, and surprisingly only got choked up with emotion once. Former Mainland alum Dave Klemic was on hand for the ceremony, and caught up with his coach afterwards. Congrats to Dick Vermeil on going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There’s not much to report from the Sixers, other than the fact that Tyrese Maxey was back in the Delaware Valley for a few youth basketball camps. Maxey is only 21-years-old, but is already mature beyond his years as he hosts a FREE youth basketball camp at Penn Charter School in Philadelphia. I like to see that.

Farabee had artificial disk replacement surgery, which is troubling to me because only three known NHL players have had the procedure done in their cervical spine before. Jack Eichel had it in Buffalo and hasn’t been the same player since. Doctors at Penn Medicine where Farabee had the surgery are optimistic about his recovery though. s I continue this series on preplanning funerals, keep in mind that each step you take makes life easier for your loved ones. So now you have had your discussion with your family and/or loved ones and you are all on the same page with what you want and what your family needs. What is the next step in the process? The next step is to make an appointment with the funeral home and sit down with one of their funeral directors who have experience in making pre-arranged funerals. Now, it is important to know if the funeral home you are planning to deal with does prearranged funerals (which most do), and do they guarantee their funeral services and merchandise when prepayment is done. This is the big
difference between the terms Plan-NoPay and Plan-Payed prearrangements which is really worth discussing because that is one of your choices as a consumer. In the funeral world there is what is called Plan-No-Pay prearrangements and Plan-Pay Prearrangements. In a Plan-No-Pay Prearrangement the client either makes the arrangements for him/her self or for another person who maybe a family member or a dear friend or acquaintance. This would involve creating a written record with the funeral home of the individual’s vital statistical information which is used to fill out the death certificate at the time of death. This information is also used to fill out the necessary forms for social security, Medicare, Medicaid and veteran’s forms. The vital statistical information consists of obviously the name, date of birth, city and state of birth, social security number, spouses name, parents names(including mother’s maiden name) educational level and occupation. At the same time the funeral director will (or should) make a record of personal biographical information which can be used to write an obituary for placement in the newspaper(s) and online. Prior CD’s, “Nothing Means Anything” and “Broken Earth” are available where digital downloads are found and also on Amazon and Spotify. Red’s albums were recorded and produced by Andy Schlee & Bob Kimmel at Bobs former studios: Giant Steps Recording and Sound Strike Studios. In addition Andy's facility called The Monkey House. A few tracks have been recorded by Rich Kurtz at his studio called Cadence Music. “Red” is a very community minded band. On Monday, August 15th they are hosting “Tech Appreciation Night” at The Deck with “Red”. Bob and several of his band mates are also techs and recording engineers. Bob said, Since most of the theaters in town are dark on Monday’s and many of their tech friends are usually off on Mondays Bob wants to encourage their industry friends to come out to see the band, so we've created this event for that purpose. For all of their audio, lighting and stage tech friends the band will be offering some giveaways and they’ll have prizes that they’ll give away on their 2nd break around 9:15pm.
Bob has arranged give aways including: CD packages of Red’s CDs and Danny Eyer’s CDs and Rich Kurtz’ CDs as well as some nice prizes that the Golden Nugget has graciously donated including an overnight stay for 2 and a comp to eat in one of their fine restaurants. On Monday the 22nd Red will be hosting is a tribute to their dear friend, Ernie Trionfo, who passed away on June 10, 2019. “Ernie was an amazing guitar player as well as a craftsman who worked on guitars and all stringed instruments. Practically every guitar player & bass player in south Jersey and even far reaching areas brought their instruments to Ernie to repair and adjust. He was loved by everyone who knew him and he played with various different bands on that stage at The Deck many many times over the years” said Bob. Bob also shared that “Four of the members in Red worked with Ernie on a regular basis for some period of time. Ernie played for many years with the band “Hawkins Road” as well

What if You Won the Lottery Jeff's Journal By Jeff Whitaker
H
ave you ever thought about what you would do if you won the lottery? Not any lottery, though: I’m talking about the big one. I know I have, and I’m assuming you have too. I've got a personal confession. When that billion-dollar-plus Mega Millions drawing took place a couple of weeks ago, I bought a ticket. Actually, I bought five. Before you lecture me on the odds of winning, hear me out. I know that statistics show that the odds of winning the jackpot are about 1 in 302.5 million. However, the way I figure, someone has to win, so it might as well be me. In case you’ve been under a rock, someone did win, and it wasn’t me. However, it’s fun to think about what I would have done with the proceeds had I won. While I’m talking statistics, it bears pointing out that about 70%
of the people who hit it big in the lottery either spend or lose all of their winnings within five years. That is a sobering reality. It reminds me of the scripture that says, “to whom much is given, much is required.” Although the reasons vary as to why they lose it all, most of the reasons center around their inability to handle the overwhelming responsibility that comes on them suddenly and others taking advantage of their newfound fortune. I’d like to think I would be responsible if I were so fortunate. However, like anything else, you never know
your response or reaction for sure until you actually experience something. I would love to take the money and help others: anonymously bless someone in need, support charities and organizations I believe in, and secure the future for my family. You probably wonder where I’m going with this. What’s the point of writing about something that most of us will never experience? It’s this. The reality is that you and I don’t have to wait to win the lottery to do most of the good we dream about. Obviously, it won’t be on the scale of a billionaire,
but that doesn’t mean we can’t take some of what we’ve been blessed with and, in turn, bless others. I think that would be the key to successfully navigating a big win if it did happen. It’s often said that if you can’t manage a little, you’ll never be able to manage a lot. It could start with something as simple as the “pay it forward” idea. Let’s make a commitment this week to pick a time or a situation where we can pay it forward. It could be buying a cup of coffee for the person behind you in line at the store or paying for lunch for the person at the next table. Use your imagination. Have some fun. Let’s all find ways to be generous in big or small ways with what we’ve been given and then watch the results we see in other areas of our life as we develop this mindset and attitude. ore than 30 million Americans now identify as multiracial. You may have even met someone like that and asked, “What are you?” I asked myself that same question as a biracial American as I teetered between pasta and pancit. Born in Somers Point, I grew up with two cultures and two tastes. Pasta dressed in pesto and Parmesan cheese, and pancit simmered in pork, garlic and rice noodles. Some families embrace both sides of the same skin. Others, like mine, do not. New Jersey nurtured my Italian side. My father loved the food. My grandmother, Mimi, cooked it. We baked puff pastries and pizzelles - snowflake-shaped cookies, stacked and dashed with powdered sugar. Mimi made the classic spaghetti and meatballs. She kneaded ground
beef, eggs and bread crumbs in a glass bowl, and carefully shaped each ball between the palms of her hands. My mother’s side lived in Nevada where they served up the flavors of the Philippines. For most people,
Las Vegas is a getaway. For me, it’s homecoming. When I visited, I saw aunts, uncles, cousins and my other grandmother, Lola, all of them bustling in one labyrinth of a house. My cousins ascended stairs like acrobats. My uncle braced himself as he cut into the chaos.

Despite the racket, Lola’s voice boomed: “Who ate my jackfruit?” and “Where are my slippers?” But I learned about Filipino food from eating out. Every Filipino spot offered plates of pancit, chicken adobo, halo-halo topped with shaved ice, jellies and ube ice cream. One time a waitress stared at me. She then spoke to Lola in Tagalog. “She said your nose isn’t flat,” Lola whispered. “Strange for a Filipina.” I tapped my nose, confused. People always asked me, “What are you?” Back then, I never really knew. Part-time Asian? Part-time white? Full-time half? Turns out, others understand my dilemma. In fact, it has a name: impostor syndrome; feeling like you aren’t enough, like you’re a fraud. According to psychologists Pauline Clance and Suzanne Imes, this affects nearly 70 percent of Americans. But more recently, the term racial imposter syndrome has surfaced. With it, we question our merit and our identity. Am I Asian enough? Am I white enough? Our skin bubbles with self-doubt. We wonder who we are. Where exactly we belong. Most people mean well. They guess if I’m “Latina” or “Hawaiian.” Once, a teacher at Absegami High School playfully called me “spicy.” Mimi and my mother always fought over the way to say things, the food I should be making, which side raised me “right.” My father didn’t help either. While Italy waved proudly behind his eyes, the Philippines did not. He frowned at the restaurants Lola loved. He rejected Tagalog, scorning every “Salamat” and “Kumusta” that left my lips. “English is your language,” he said. “Not that.” Half of me collapsed - obliterated by words. After my parents divorced, pieces slowly wedged back together. I

learned Tagalog, but jaggedly. I read up on our culture, thumbed through the yellowing photos from Lola’s childhood. Again I wondered, “Is it enough?” Later, my mother met my stepdad. But Lola didn’t appreciate him. Ty strode in with black culture at his side. “Martin” and ’90s R&B flickered over our TV. His family stuffed us with fried chicken and cornbread, crumbly and golden. SWV, Jodeci, and Mary J. Blige dominated every playlist. I washed dishes, scrubbing and belting to the beat. “You’re more black than Italian,” Ty joked. Soon enough, he complemented our trips to Vegas. Flowed with our family dynamic. He tried siopao and sinigang, bangus and tapa. And 10 trips later, Lola accepted him. In fact-she adored him. But recently, my family sold the Vegas house and the flavors fled. In Jersey, I barely ate Filipino food. I missed the salty tang of pancit. The sweetness of halo-halo. With my Italian grandmother gone, I lost my connection to homemade pasta and pizzelles. Sometimes, I blinked at mirrors, wondering if an imposter stared back, still tapping my nose wondering, “What are you?” I’m not the only one. New Jersey’s mixed-race population has increased nearly 115 percent since 2010. With diverse households on the rise, self-doubt and mixed perceptions become inevitable. But I clung to three worlds. Frankie Valli, Lea Salonga, and Mary J. Blige on repeat. “Goodfellas” and “Martin” on the small screen. I savored every combination. Pizza and siopao. Gelato and halo-halo. Pasta and pancit. Cape May County's Oldest Tree has Deep Roots The Tree That Moved the Parkway

iving in the Garden State, we are fortunate to have some of the most spectacular scenery this country has to offer. Traveling up and down the Garden State Parkway the 173 miles from Cape May to the New York state line can be an adventure in itself. The colors of the leaves and short, gentle turns add to the appeal of the drive. It also has the distinct honor of being home to one of the nation’s oldest holly trees. The 325 year old, sixty foot holly sits idle at the John B. Townsend Shoemaker Holly Picnic Area in Upper Township, just a few miles south

of Exit 25. The tree once stood on the property of the Shoemaker family, whose house was sold to the Highway Authority in the early 1950s. The original plan was to construct the Parkway over their property, and the tree was expected
to be uprooted. Daniel G. Fenton, founder of the Holly Society of America and resident of Millville, led an effort to save the tree. He worked in conjunction with the Highway Authority’s chief architect, Gilmore Clarke, and other road planners, to come up with a new road design that incorporated the tree. A 120 yard gap was created between the north and south lanes of the Parkway and the tree was spared. In December 2014, the state of New Jersey celebrated its 350th Anniversary and, in doing so, honored the history of the tree with a new memorial plaque. The plaque was proudly donated by local businessman Tom Tower and his business, Advantage Signs.
In recent years, the Upper Township Historical Society has held a tradition of decorating the tree during the Christmas season. Members of the society, along with families and local residents, donate Christmas balls to be placed on the lower part of the tree throughout the month of December.
