How to Make Homemade Lemonade in 3 Easy Steps: Ingredients: (Serves 7) ● 1 cup (240 mL) of lemon juice (about 8 lemons) ● 1 cup (225 g) of sugar ● 6 cups (1.4 L) of water ● Ice (optional) 1. Juice 8 lemons to get about 1 cup of lemon juice. Roll your lemons on the countertop to make them easier to juice. Next, cut your lemons in half and press them onto a lemon press over a pitcher or measuring cup. Twist the lemon halves over the press to get as much juice out as possible. ● Microwave your lemons for 10-20 seconds to soften the pulp and get more juice. ● If you don't have a lemon press, squeeze the lemon to get most of the juice out. Then, press a fork or mixer beater into the lemon pulp and twist it to release the rest of the juice. ● You can get a lemon press at your local grocery or department store or online.
2. Transfer the lemon juice into a large pitcher.If you like pulp in your lemon juice, pour the squeezed lemon juice directly into the pitcher. If you don’t like pulp, hold a strainer over the pitcher and pour the lemon juice over the strainer to catch the pulp. Then, empty the strainer into your compost or trash. Make sure your pitcher can hold at least 8 cups (1.9 L) of fluids. 3. Pour 1 cup of sugar into the lemon juice and stir to dissolve it. Since lemon juice is acidic, it can dissolve your sugar for you, which saves you a lot of work! Add the sugar directly into your lemon juice, then stir until the sugar dissolves. This should take about 3-4 minutes. ● If you don’t want your lemonade to be as sweet, you can add less sugar. Try adding just 1/2 or 3/4 cup of sugar. ● Don’t add your water until the sugar dissolves so that the lemon juice isn’t diluted. It will take the sugar longer to dissolve in diluted lemon juice.

Massive Indoor Pickleball Center Coming to the Former Shore Mall By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer
W
hat once was a bustling little mall has been reimagined and will once again be full
of activity. ProShot Pickleball will be building a state-of-the-art indoor pickleball facility in the space previously occupied by Burlington Coat Factory. The sports complex is expected to be ready for play by late fall/early winter 2022. Andy Pessano, along with Dan Woch and Dean Tredente, is spearheading this project. He has been playing pickleball for six years and runs the Landing Creek Pickleball, a sports retail store in Ocean City, as well as Pessano Variety, a general store on the corner of 3rd and Atlantic on the same island. “We announced the concept at the Funky Pickle event in Ventnor this past weekend,” said Pessano. “We spent about six months looking for a location, then worked on the design, and now we are getting permits and beginning to build.” The ProShot Pickleball facility will house eight, full-length courts, a cafe with premade, healthy meal options, locker rooms, a retail store, and a 1000 square foot lounge for athletes to meet up and unwind after a game. Pessano said that the facility will use a new patented sport flooring that will We've Moved! be easy on players’ joints, separating
the complex from any other indoor pickleball space in the tri-state area. “The sport has been on the rise for the past several years,” said Pessano. “What would have been shocking a few years ago is now warranted. We expect a tremendous response from the community.” On their website, the “founders” state in a published letter, "We envision this facility as being a place where the community can come
together to learn a new sport, meet new friends, exercise, laugh, and tap into their competitive side!” For those who haven’t seen the new sport, pickleball combines elements of ping pong, tennis and badminton. Players compete either in singles or doubles on a slightly-smaller tennis court, using a racket and plastic ball with holes. Pickleball has become popular with older adults and people looking to exercise in a fun, fast-paced fashion.
As of now, Pessano and his partners have released a membership opportunity for “people invested in a pickleball home” called the Founders Membership. This membership tier has tons of perks, including friend passes, discounts at the retail store, advanced bookings of the courts (up to two weeks), discounted lessons, and best hourly rates and even free play. The former Burlington Coat Factory will be divided between two tenants: a restaurant depot store and
the indoor pickleball facility. Pessano expects delays in separating utilities between the new tenants but feels confident that the complex will be ready for players by winter 2022. The parking lot outside the space has been repaved and construction is already underway. Ventnor's sand sculptor draws attention By Cindy Christy Fertsch
R
ichard Bates, of Absecon, is known by local beachgoers as the “The Sandman.” "I sit all week,” says Bates, who is an IT Computer professional. "So when I get to the beach the last thing I want to do is sit.” Instead Bates digs, shapes, molds and sculpts. You can find him on the beach between Suffolk Avenue and Surrey Avenue in Ventnor nearly every Saturday and Sunday. Bates often draws a curious crowd. "Are you an artist? What are you doing? Why do you do it?” are some of the most common questions asked by onlookers. "I do it because I find it therapeutic,” replies Bates. He has been sculpting sand creations for the last ten years. Dolphins, castles, and Disney characters are some of his favorite inspirations. A variety of shovels, buckets, water and a straw are the tools of his trade. "I've been playing with sand my whole life. It is only in recent years that I have become more serious

We talked while he artistically molded the sand into a castle. To my delight, Bates then also formed the Shore Local logo out of sand. Bates' adult son purchased a "Sandman" shirt for him and it quickly became a weekend favorite. "It is all for fun and it's there to hopefully make someone smile," shares Bates.

A day in the life of an ice-cream man

obert Lukasiewicz wakes up every morning in the summer with two missions in mind: bless his family and sell ice cream. The 59-year-old from Somers Point spends six hours a day, six days a week in peak season, pulling a 300-pound cart overflowing with ice cream. He logs 35 miles per week walking the entire length of the Ventnor beach, serving families ice-cold treats. The former marine (serving between 1981 and 1985) found work in the ice-cream industry when his child reported that his teacher served ice cream during the summers. Lukasiewicz connected with the teacher during a parent-teacher cookout, and when he learned more about the pay, freedom and opportunity, he decided to take the plunge. Every morning (except Wednesdays) Lukasiewicz wakes up and prepares for a 12-hour workday. He restocks his freezer-cart with Jack & Jill products (which he purchases from the wholesale store in Egg Harbor Township) and puts on his boots

he Atlantic City Air Show, otherwise known as “Thunder Over the Boardwalk”, has been one of the high-
lights of the year since it first started back in 2003. It has now become one of the biggest airshows in North America, and it is famous for the fact it takes place over our amazing boardwalk and is usually on a Wednesday. This year’s show is set to take place on Wednesday August 24th, starting at 11am. The theme is “A Salute to Those Who Serve”, and the organizers have an exciting line up of experienced aviation professionals to showcase a myriad of incredible aerial stunts. who has been piloting planes since he was 17 years old. Now, he has more than 20,000 hours of logged flight time in over 105 different types of aircraft. Chris flies a 1941 North American SNJ-2, an aircraft with substantial historical significance because it was used as an advanced trainer by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corp to train “The Greatest Generation” during WWII and the Korean War. Only 61 of these models were ever made, and fewer than 10 are still flying today around the world. The Full Throttle Formationteam from Atlanta, Georgia, are the largest precision formation air show team in America and are performing at this year’s AC Air Show. The pilots boast more than 300,000 hours of combined flight experience in military and commercial aircrafts. They ultimately want to inspire a new generation of aviation enthusiasts to become pilots, and they provide education to those wanting to pursue aviation careers. Another impressive vessel to be in attendance will be the F/A-18F Super Hornet, a twin engine, carrier capable, multirole fighter aircraft. Its original vessel was designed and initially produced by McDonnell Douglas and first flew in 1995. After McDonnell Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997, it entered fleet service with the U.S. Navy in 1999. The Gladiators of Strike Fighter Squadron 106 is the Navy’s East Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron, and they will be bringing two F/A-18s to AC to demonstrate maneuvers used in training and combat flights. Dougherty Airshows are led by Paul Dougherty, a pilot who has been flying in airshows since 1998 with over 23,000 logged hours. He flies a 230 horsepower Christen Eagle or 1930 Great Lakes while playing modern tunes and performing torque rolls, tails slides, and tumbles. His operation would not be possible without his personal announcer and daughter, Caroline. The father-daughter duo love interacting with crowds and answering questions before and after every performance and are a performance not to be missed! Jim Beasley is a seasoned pilot who will be bringing a P-51 Mustang, an American long-range, single-seat fighter and fight bomber that was used during World War II, the Korean War, and other conflicts. Beasley is a plaintiff attorney, M.D, and motocross racer as well as a very skilled pilot. He is one of the highest time current Mustang pilots in the world, and it is an absolute treat that we will get to see him display his talent on August 24th. One of the most anticipated acts of the day will undoubtedly be the
U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, or the Thunderbirds. They plan and present precision aerial maneuvers to exhibit the capabilities of modern, high-performance aircraft and the high degree of professional skill required to operate them. They fly a Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon which is one of the world’s best precision tactical bombers and air-toair combat aircraft. A Thunderbirds air demonstration comprises a mix of formation flying and solo routines. Finally, The Golden Knights, who have conducted more than 16,000 shows in 50 states and 48 countries, are one of only three Department of Defense-sanctioned aerial demonstration teams. They perform impressive skydiving displays, often enlisting soldiers, celebrities, and heads of state to accompany them. The team, comprising approximately 95 people, perform at more than 100 events per year. The event can be seen from all beaches along Atlantic City, and parking is available in various locations across the city. Catching Up with Erin Castaldi: Somer’s Point’s Poet Laureate By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer
S
omers Point’s writer in residence has been hard at work since taking on the role in 2021. Erin Castaldi, 43, of Mays Landing has represented Somers Point at various events like Art in the Park and the upcoming Poetry in the Park, which will take place on August 7 in Kennedy Park. She has also connected with Jordan Road school students and taught them the beauty and wonder of poetry. “I am the cheerleader of Somers Point, and I love engaging in creativity and encouraging people to do art,” said Castaldi. Prior to her appointment as the poet laureate, Castaldi worked with her husband for their family ATM business. She loves spending time in nature, always bringing a notebook with her to write any words that come to mind. “ I ’ve been writing since I was seven, and my uncle, my biggest fan, gave me some poetry b o ok s ,” said Castaldi. “He was a surfer and involved in protests in the 60s and 70s, so he was a big inspirer of the arts. I would try to emulate the books and as I grew older, I would write my teenage angst.” Castaldi specializes in haikus, the Japanese form of poetry of 13 syllables. The poet says that haikus are challenging because of the limited space, and the need to create an “aha moment” out of a few choice words. Here’s an example of one of Castaldi’s haikus: ● Quicksilver ● A gathering tide ● Finds midnight On May 30, 2022, Castaldi won a national contest and had a book published, titled “Boundary Disruption.”

The poetry follows Castaldi and her husband, working through difficult times in their marriage during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We came out on the other side strengthened,” said Castaldi. “But marriage is a choice you make every day, choosing to be happy and intentional.” In addition, Erin Castaldi has been awarded two honorable mentions in two international competitions. In the Kaji Aso Studio Haiku Competition 2021, Erin read her poem via Zoom,
which is available on YouTube. She also was awarded Honorable Mention in the International Haiku Competition 2021 sponsored by Croatia’s Tourist Board. Throughout 2021, Castaldi has had multiple poems published in approximately a dozen journals, columns, magazines and anthologies. She was the featured poet in June at the Beach Bards Zoom presentation and was included in The First Wave, an anthology published in 2021 by The Beach Bards, based in Sea Isle City. The poet’s haikus were included in Somers Point Unique Experiences Club’s video of the Here Comes the Sun event held in April 2021. As for the future, Castaldi hopes to publish more books and potentially apply to become the poet laureate of New Jersey. “I wanna move forward in my craft and keep inspiring kids,” said Castaldi. “It all comes down to discipline, being mindful, and engaging people in conversation.”

Brigantine’s Beacon
T
he Brigantine Lighthouse was built in 1926 by the Island Development Real Estate Company to attract people to Brigantine Beach Island, the newly popular beach town nicknamed "the Twin Resort of Atlantic City". Their slogan was "come to the lighthouse". It was never an operating lighthouse but it did serve other purposes for the resort. In the 1930's the Brigantine Lighthouse became the town’s police station. The tiny building could accommodate the city’s few officers. If they had a call, they'd turn the light on which would alert officers to return to the station. The steel door of the holding cell is on display at the Historical Museum located just 100 yards away. The lighthouse also served as a gift shop and in the 70's was the original
location of the Historical Museum. The lighthouse fell into disrepair in the early 1990s. A group of volunteers and construction companies answered the call, refurbishing the building in 1995 and again in 2013. The lighthouse has survived numerous storms including the Great Storm of 62 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Catholics to observe wedding of the sea tradition Aug. 15
rom Brigantine to Cape May, seaside Catholic parishes will hold their annual wedding of the sea or ceremonies Monday, Aug. 15, upholding a tradition that began in Venice more than 1,000 years ago. The custom honors the close connection or “marriage” between our oceanfront communities and the sea, giving thanks for all of the good derived from it, and seeking protection for all who depend on it. Pastors will be rowed by beach patrol boats past the breakers to toss a wreath of flowers into the water. Many of the faithful will take home some of the blessed ocean water, believing that the ceremony has transformed it into holy water. All are welcome to join in. The blessing of the sea also marks the final portion of the Feast of the Assumption observance, a holy day for Catholics celebrating the assumption of Mary, the virgin mother of Jesus, into heaven. Feast day events include a celebration of Mass, a procession from the church to the beach and the

The Venice tradition relates to an annual “wedding” between the city and the Adriatic Sea on the Feast of the Ascension of Christ. The ritual began as a symbol of the maritime power’s vital relationship to the sea. “The tradition came to Atlantic City through St. Michael’s Church, an historically Italian parish, but was celebrated on a different feast, the Assumption of Mary,” according to weddingofthesea.org, which promotes the event in Atlantic City. The holy day is observed around the world with processions, celebrations and festivals including one planned this year by St. Joseph Parish in Sea Isle City. Local observances are planned as follows: Bishop Dennis Sullivan will celebrate two Masses along the Jersey Shore in honor of the Assumption and the wedding of the sea. At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, Bishop Sullivan will celebrate a Vigil Mass for the Assumption at Wildwood’s Notre Dame de la Mer Parish, St. Ann Church, 2901 Atlantic Ave. Following the Mass, there will be a procession to the ocean for the blessing of the sea. OC Theatre Company and OC Pops join forces to stage The Sound of Music

he Sound of Music, the perennial favorite about a problem named Maria, graces the Hughes Performing Arts Center stage from August 3 through August 12. This final collaboration between Rodgers and Hammerstein is being produced by the Greater Ocean City Theatre Company (OCTC) with the soaring musical sounds of the Ocean City Pops Orchestra. The Sound of Music is considered the world's most beloved musical. The original Broadway production starred Mary Martin as Maria and won five Tony Awards in 1959 including

Tree where OC founders met puts down root at museum

he trunk of a historic tree that shaded four Methodist ministers as they met in 1879 to establish a Christian retreat they would name “Ocean City” has a new home at the Ocean City Historical Museum. The tree is now on display at the museum, which is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Saturday with free admission for visitors. The display
is part of a section of the museum dedicated to the founding of Ocean City. The tree had been housed at the Ocean City Tabernacle, but it was decided that the new location would best serve visitors interested in Ocean City history. The display notes that Rev. S. The ship goes out to sea six times a day, seven days a week, with a new pirate crew every hour. Mateys Morgan and James guide the young swashbucklers through a battle against Pirate Pete, buried treasure discovery, and sampling of Pirate Grog (or orange soda). The maiden voyage took place about 15 years ago, when Jamie Richard met with another pirate company that had a ship in Ocean City, but was based in Maryland. “The gentleman was ready to retire and spend all his time in Maryland, so we decided to expand our parasailing business to include Pirate

Captain Bridgette Groves Voyages,” said Richard, the owner. “I was a preschool teacher and I had taught Jamie’s daughter,” said Groves. “I got involved in Pirate Voyages 12 years ago, and now I’m here full-time, and I love it.” Captain Groves uses a booming, kid-friendly voice to make jokes that engage kids and adults. The Stowe Award honors beach patrol's best A Look Back By Fred Miller
“O
CRAA Dedicates Perpetual Stowe Award” was a headline in the September 5, 1997 Sandpaper. The article began, “On Sunday, August 31, the Ocean City Rowing and Athletic Association presented a perpetual plaque in honor of Bob Stowe Sr. and Bob Stowe Jr. to Mrs. Norma Stowe, wife and mother of honorees. The Stowe Award will be awarded annually to an individual for outstanding contribution to the profession of ocean lifesaving in Ocean City.

Tom, who was a member of the OCBP Hall of Fame since 1975, died on February 12, 2022. He will be posthumously honored at the OCBP Reunion on August 13, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bayside Center, 520 Bay Avenue, Ocean City. More than 50 artists from New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York will exhibit and sell works in oils, acrylics, watercolor and mixed media, as well as photography and jewelry. The Ocean City Twins Contest awards prizes to those who look the most and least alike. The contest takes place on Wednesday, August 3, and is open to all ages. Registration is free and begins at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Music Pier. The contest begins at 6 p.m. A Sand Sculpting Contest on Thursday, August 4, will be open to kids, teens, adults and families. Registration is free and begins at 9 a.m. at the Sixth Street Beach. Family Night on Thursday, August 4 will bring a variety of bands and entertainers to the Ocean City Boardwalk from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the event will continue on Thursdays through the season. Cars and Coffee from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 6 will combine two of everybody’s favorite things. n the summer, the heat can be so oppressive and between dips in the pool, long hikes, and day trips, no one has time or interest in heavy meals. Restaurants adjust their menus depending on the season, serving fattier, richer stews and sandwiches in the winter, and in the summer, they’ll offer fresh fruit, citrusy flavors, and of course, salads. Salads make for the perfect summer meal. They are filling but light, healthy and refreshingly cold. Not everyone believes that a salad can make for a satisfying meal, but let me assure you, that is completely untrue.
Salads are whatever you make them to be (literally), so you should be strategic in how you craft your salads. It’s important to include some form of protein in your salad. Protein serves as the foundation for most bodily functions, and fills up your tummy quickly. You’ll feel more satiety when you prioritize protein and reduce your caloric intake. No matter what kind of salad you make, add some grilled chicken, beans, shrimp, tofu or grass-fed beef. Your appetite will thank you. In my opinion, there is nothing less appealing than a bowl of iceberg lettuce smothered with creamy dressing. There’s no variety! Add some diversity in your salad by chopping

up some veggies. Dice a bell pepper, chop some celery, or cut up a tomato. The color variation will look appetizing and the varying taste will make every bite feel like a treasure hunt. Using the same example, challenge yourself to make your own dressing. Store Bought dressings are loaded with chemicals and sugar, leaving you feeling bloated and uncomfortable. Making simple dressings is easy, especially if you keep the right ingredients on hand. Combine crushed garlic, fresh lemon juice, dijon mustard, flaky salt, and a few teaspoons of olive oil.
This tasty dressing will lighten your salad while also adding savory flavor to your veggies. There are plenty of homemade dressing recipes online in case you need more inspiration. Like protein, it’s important to add healthy fats on your salad to promote satiety. Fat will cut through the lean bitterness of your base veggies and make you feel full. Easy healthy fats to add to your salad are half an avocado, feta cheese, a fried or hard-boiled egg, fatty fish like anchovies, or even a sprinkle of olive oil. For me, in order to feel like a meal is worth my time, I need some crunch element. Nuts, seeds, fried onions, croutons or tortilla strips elevate a salad from boring health food to crispy deliciousness in every bite. Anthropologists say that crispy foods are highly valued in western cultures, and by including crunchy bits in homemade meals, Americans can feel more satisfaction from their everyday foods. Premake a family-sized salad and keep it in the fridge for up to a week. Whether you crave a full meal or a quick bite, digging into your salad will make you feel healthy and balanced. Keep salad ingredients on-hand so you can create a beautiful spread without visiting the grocery store everyday. Here’s one salad recipe to get you started:
The Greek Chickpea Salad
Ingredients: ● 1 cup of quinoa ● ¼ cup of mint, chopped ● ¼ cup of curly parsley, chopped ● 1 large red onion, diced finely ● 1 fifteen ounce can of chickpeas, rinsed ● 1 cup of crumbled feta cheese ● 2 lemons, juiced ● ½ cup of extra virgin olive oil ● Salt ● Pepper ● 1 large cucumber, diced finely ● 2 cloves of garlic, crushed ● 1 cup of pistachios
Rinse and drain quinoa to remove impurities. Add quinoa to 2 cups of water in a saucepan over medium heat on the stove. Cover and cook for 15 minutes and once the water is fully absorbed, let cool for five minutes. Prep veggies. In a large bowl, add mint, parsley, onion, cucumber, chickpeas and feta. Toss thoroughly., In a small bowl, emulsify olive oil, lemon juice, crushed garlic, salt, and pepper. Pour over salad and toss. Top with pistachios and keep in the fridge for up to a week in an airtight container.

I Competed in the Ocean City Twins Contest: A Tale of Two Twins

tition. There wasn’t much we could do to ensure victory. We just kept our fingers crossed and followed the instructions of the backstage volunteers. When our time came, we marched on stage with the other non-identical twins. Children as young as two stood alongside us. “I wish we were that cute,” I thought. All we could do was stand on stage and await our fate. Hundreds of adults were in the audience, staring at us and whispering to each other. What were they saying? A bright spotlight hit Holly and me. A volunteer told us to walk across the stage and pose at the end of the catwalk like models. Holly and I held hands and obeyed her instructions, waving to the audience while they cheered. Did we win? Holly and I were handed white ribbons and led off stage to our parents. Other twins walked across the stage, but I was confused about whether we had beaten out the others. My mom explained that we won “honorable mention,” and the twins that beat us were of different genders. So we basically won the most different girl twins! We hung our bows on our shirts and left the Music Pier. Our parents treated us to frozen custard from Kohr Brothers and then drove us home. We fell asleep on the way, and we were carried upstairs and went to bed. In the years following the competition, Holly and I only grew more different. Holly developed a passion for heavy metal music, science fiction movies and books, and skateboarding. I wasn’t sure where I fit in, but I did well in school, played softball

Delivery Available Twins, Sarah and Holly Fertsch at 17 y.o. and basketball, and enjoyed painting. In high school, kids smirked at the Fertsch twins: so different but so similar in their own way. As I wrote this article, my mom confessed a secret to me. She and my dad had entered Holly and me in the twins contest as infants, in the identical twins division! Needless to say, we lost. How ironic for us to win ribbons in the most different twins
division years later. Despite our differences, Holly and I will always remain close. We developed our own unique sense of humor and special twin language. We bonded over singing obnoxiously loud in the car and riding roller coasters. I wouldn’t give up being a twin for anything, and I will always remember with a smile our big win at the Ocean City Twins Contest.
Postcards From The Past
The first structure in the country built especially for aircraft spotters was built atop the Music Pier. Two days after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, Ocean City’s Daily Sentinel-Ledger reported a lookout tower was to be built on the top of the Music Pier. Its sole purpose was to provide a means of coastal defense as a “ look-out” point for protecting a portion of the Jersey seaboard from enemy submarines or U-boats in the water as well as enemy aircraft in the skies. Volunteers consisting of teenage boys from Ocean City High School to retired residents from the island kept watch 24 hours a day. The tower remained in place until 1968 when it was dismantled. Hollywood comes to New Jersey That's Entertainment By Pete Thompson

re you ready for Halloween? Sure, it’s only the start of August, but some folks around here take Halloween very seriously. So much so, that a piece of Hollywood has come to New Jersey, and more specifically, Egg Harbor Township. On Saturday July 30th, Spirit unveiled the trailer for “Spirit Halloween: The Movie” to screaming fans at a promotional event celebrating the seasonal grand opening of the flagship Spirit Halloween store in Egg Harbor Township. Members of the film’s cast were there for the launch. Spirit, headquartered in Egg Harbor Township, has 1,450 stores around the country. The EHT location was the first store in the United States to open on July 30th, as others unlocked their doors starting on July 31st. As for the movie, it stars Jaiden Smith (“Blue Bloods”), Dylan Frankel (“Raven’s Home”) and Donavan Colan (“Zoe”). Frankel, Colan and Smith play teen friends who spend a night locked inside a Spirit Halloween store on Halloween. Much like actual Spirit Halloween stores inhabiting empty retail spaces in New Jersey and beyond, they find a local spirit haunting the many “residents” of the strip mall establishment — demonic animatronic characters including Nightcrawler, Buzzsaw and Mr. Dark. “Spirit Halloween” also stars Marissa Reyes (“Raven’s Home”), Christopher Lloyd (“Back to the Future”), Marla Gibbs (“The Jeffersons”), and Rachael Leigh Cook (“She’s All That”). Lloyd plays Alec Windsor, a man who disappeared and is the force that haunts the town on Halloween. The movie was actually filmed in Rome, Georgia and Nashville, Tennessee, but the Spirit Halloween stores are so ubiquitous with New Jersey, that folks around here are bound to enjoy the movie. “Spirit Halloween: The Movie” is scheduled to be released on October 11th. Elsewhere in box office news, the movie “DC League of Super-Pets” got a big assist from “Nope” dropping 57% so it could take the top spot at the box office last weekend. However,

Spirit Halloween - The Movie is due out in October its $23 million start is going to need some serious legs to break new ticket ground for animation. According to Rotten Tomatoes, animated films don’t tend to do well between late July and the weekend past Labor Day. In fact, according to the website, “the only animated film to gross $100 million in that period was The Simpsons Movie, and that was rated PG-13. The second-highest grossing animated film in that realm was the R-rated Sausage Party. So the num-
ber of family-oriented animated films to reach nine digits is actually zero.” “Thor: Love and Thunder” continues to do well, as it went past the $300 million mark in just 24 days. “Minons: The Rise of Gru” also keeps racking up money as it’s over $320 million at this point. No one is better this summer than “Top Gun: Maverick” as it soared past the $650 million mark and is still in the top five after ten weeks since its release! The summer movie season is hoping for one last big charge before the box office heads into what could be a very slow autumn. “Bullet Train”, from the director of Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde, pits Brad Pitt against a locomotive full of fellow assassins. I will be watching to see how this one performs in its opening weekend. Speaking of Brad Pitt, the actor made headlines in a GQ magazine cover story when he said that he considers his ongoing body of work to be part of his "last semester or trimester." He pondered, "What is this section gonna be? And how do I wanna design that?" That fueled rumors that Pitt was considering retirement. When asked directly at the “Bullet Train” premiere, Pitt put any retirement talk to rest saying “"I know, I

The Captain - from ESPN Films Which leads me to the streaming services as Brad Pitt’s company Plan B Entertainment is behind a new Amazon Prime show I was eager to watch called “Paper Girls”. “Paper Girls” follows the story of four 12-year-old newspaper delivery girls (Erin, MacKenzie, KJ, and Tiffany) set in Stony Stream, a fictional suburb of Cleveland, Ohio. As they are out delivering papers on the morning after Halloween, the town is struck by an invasion from a mysterious force from the future. The girls become unwillingly caught up in the conflict between two warring factions of time travelers.
Because of the time travel element to this, I really wanted to like it. Especially with this question as a hook, “what would you do if you met your 12-year-old self?” However, in the eight-episode first season, I feel like they took seven episodes to set up the series and only finally began to deliver in the final episode of season one. e all know spinach is packed with nutrients. This leafy green vegetable has been shown to benefit our health in so many ways. Spinach may decrease oxidative stress, improve eye health, and help to prevent heart disease and cancer. Spinach is good for your hair, skin and eyesight. Spinach is rich in vitamins B, A, K, E and C. It also contains potassium and magnesium to help improve skin texture and treat numerous skin-related disorders. Spinach is a superfood that makes you strong! It supports the immune system and the digestive system. Spinach leaves also contain a powerful antioxidant called glutathione, which can help the liver work right. Spinach helps hair growth as well, so eat up! Spinach is available all year round, but spring is the peak season. You can eat it raw or cooked. However, due to its high water content, cooked spinach has a higher nutritional value than raw spinach. You will absorb the iron and calcium even more if the leafy green veggie is cooked. This is because spinach is loaded with oxalic acid, which blocks the absorption of iron and calcium but breaks down under high temperatures. If you eat an excessive amount, though, there may be a toxic reaction due to too much intake of spinach at one time. Stomach issues like gas, bloating and cramps may occur due to
the high fiber content. Enjoy spinach in moderation to avoid these effects. Spinach couldn’t be easier to prepare. Add it to breakfast omelets. It also makes a great base for a lunch or dinner salad and is most delicious when served with garlic and oil. he Margate Business Association’s 19th Annual Wine Tasting held on Friday, July 29, 2022 at the beautifully renovated Edgmar Circle recreation field was a resounding success. Event planners kicked it up a notch by tenting the area complete with chandeliers. Over 300 guests, enjoyed an unforgettable evening of wine, spirit tastings, a silent and live auction, mouthwatering Little Sicilian arancini balls, TacocaT tacos, Bocca pizza, Di-

A portion of the proceeds benefits the Margate Business Association’s Daniel and Maria Walters Scholarship Program which has awarded over $120,700 in scholarships since its inception. The scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who have attended Margate City schools and are continuing their education. The event also supports the MBA’S Children Fund in conjunction with the Margate

Interview with local boxer Justin ‘Time’ Figueroa

as part of the Boardwalk Boxing Star Series. Making his pro debut is a fighter from Atlantic City who trained in Atlantic City at the AC PAL (Police Athletic League). He has an amateur record of 37 and 5 and his name is Justin “Time” Figueroa. Marc Berman: You're making your pro debut not in a small room or in a small venue. You're going to be at Boardwalk Hall in the Adrian Phillips Ballroom in one of the world's most famous boxing halls, in one of the world's most famous boxing cities.

Justin “Time” Figueroa, you’re 37 and 5 as an amateur, you're born in one of the world's boxing capitals, Atlantic City. You're from Atlantic City. You live in Atlantic City and you train in Atlantic City. Where do you train? Justin Figueroa: I train at the Atlantic City PAL every day, and I'm just excited to be performing and showcasing my talent on this card coming up. Marc Berman: Where did you go to high school? Justin Figueroa: I went to high school at Holy Spirit High School in Absecon, about 10 minutes away from Atlantic City; a Catholic school. Marc Berman: And as an amateur you got some awards while you were in high school, didn't you? Justin Figueroa: Yeah, I played football for the Holy Spirit Spartans, and I also wrestled and I played a couple of other sports. But football and wrestling were my main hobbies over there. Marc Berman: He's a good looking kid, and he's ripped. Look at him. I could tell you're not on my diet. Okay, how many cheesesteaks do you eat a day? I eat 50. Justin Figueroa: If I do have one, then I'm in the gym at least three times a day burning it off, so I can maybe have one, but I usually keep the diet very clean. I'll wait until after the fight to hit the White House to get a sub or something like that. Maybe me and you could get a cheesesteak. Marc Berman: We could do that. So what is your diet? Justin Figueroa: My diet is just hard work and dedication. Seriously, I wake up in the morning. If I'm feeling hungry then maybe I have an apple or orange, some fruit to fuel me up before I go train. I usually do strength and conditioning in the morning, or I go and meet up with my mentologist, my padman, and work on my craft with him. Then after that, I come home and have breakfast, probably eggs, fruit, maybe Greek yogurt, granola or a protein smoothie, something like that. Then I'll go train again around three, four, or five o’clock. Then I have a small meal. Chicken. I mainly eat a lot of chicken and vegetables. My lady likes to make things like cauliflower, rice and stuff. She mixes it up for me. She cooks for me every night and keeps it interesting for me. So I definitely keep it clean so I'm on weight and I'm ready to go. Marc Berman: You're also a member of our awesome Atlantic City Beach Patrol. What beach are you on? Justin Figueroa: Currently I'm on Kentucky Avenue, one of the busiest beaches in Atlantic City.
I've been on the Atlantic City Beach Patrol for six years and I enjoy myself every summer. It’s definitely been life-changing. I enjoy myself every summer and saving lives is what I do out there. Marc Berman: Who are your trainers? Justin Figueroa: I have Coach Arnold Robbins as my head trainer. I have Coach Johnny Gibbs as my second trainer and my assistant. And then I have a strength conditioning coach. He goes by DLH. His name is Darrin Hudgins. Marc Berman: We're talking to Justin “Time” Figueroa. And I have to ask, who do you admire in the boxing world? And as I asked (Thomas Cornflake LaManna), who would you like to face in the ring? Justin Figueroa: Well first I want to give a big shoutout to Cornflake for bringing this card to Atlantic City. This card is going to be amazing. I went to the last show and I'm telling you, it was electrifying. I was like, I got to get on this card. And I'm bringing out a big crowd. It's going to be crazy. Like I said, I'm very excited to showcase my talent. Someone who inspires me in the boxing world? My two favorite boxers are Vasiliy Lomachenko. I like his style. I like his flashy angles that he uses. I admire that style. I use that in my style. And I also like a Jersey guy named Shakur Stevenson. I also like his style, too. ’m writing this before I fully know what the Phillies will do at the MLB trade deadline, which is set for August 2nd at 6 p.m. Hopefully, Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies make a move to bolster their starting pitching, but I will have to wait to write about that until next week. In the meantime, since I last wrote, the Phillies bounced back to win two out of three against Atlanta and then swept the Pirates in PIttsburgh for the first time since 1968. As I write this, they are a season-high eight games above the .500 mark and a full game in front of St. Louis for the final NL wildcard spot. The Phillies also got some good medical news on the potential return of Bryce Harper to the lineup. The Phillies also did make one minor trade prior to me writing, but
I still get the feeling that more is to come. Eagles training camp is underway with all eyes on the first preseason game which is fast approaching. Plus, the NFL hands down a verdict on DeShaun Watson. The Phillies also got good news about reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper as he had three pins removed from his left thumb on Monday August 1st, just 33 days after they were initially inserted to stabilize a fracture. It was a significant step in Harper’s attempt to play again this season, and it came one day before the trade deadline.

would be the new record for any sports collectible. I enjoyed walking around the convention floor and I even got some autographed items I’ve had in storage for years authenticated. The “National” as it’s known, has been in Atlantic City four times since 1988. Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait too long for it to return! ● Finally, not long after I wrote last week, Mainland alum Chase Petty was promoted from the Dayton Dragons to Single-A Daytona in the Congrats to Chase Petty on getting promoted to Cincinnati Reds organization. Practicing "Inside" Self-Care Moms Vibe: By Krystle J. Bailey
E
very once in a while, I like to take a break from the lists of things to do and ways to clean the house in order to offer my sisters in motherhood a letter from the heart. As the summer winds down, many of us are feeling a sense of pressure. We still need to check too many items off the summer bucket list while also shifting our thinking to the upcoming school year. With camps ending, trips still on the horizon, and back-to-school shopping around the corner, this time of year can feel overwhelming. By now, we all know the importance of self-care, but too often, we think of it as trips to the nail salon, spa days, and massages. While those things do count as self-care, I find

them to have fleeting results. Over the past several years, I have learned more and more about myself, what brightens my inner light, and what makes me feel at ease. These practices have become part of my personal self-care. My hair and nails are things I do to feel pretty but what I’ve learned is that self-care is an inside job that is centered on the healing of the heart, mind, and spirit. Here are a few practices that I use when feeling overwhelmed. Writing As a writer, of course, this is my go-to outlet when overwhelm strikes. When I was younger, I used to write in my journal, wondering how it would sound or if one day someone might read it. I’d tell my journal the background story and play-by-play before I got to the emotional aspect of why I was writing as if I intended to publish my journal entry. While writing in all forms is therapeutic, the ability to write freely took some practice. I
started scribbling, doodling, and playing with different fonts and words that didn’t necessarily make logical sense but felt good to create. As I began to let go, I truly began to tap into the healing power of writing. I currently have two paper journals, several Google docs titled “journal,” and countless notes on my phone where I record thoughts simply to get them out of my head. Whether you take time to doodle, make lists, journal, or write letters you’ll never send, the simple act of putting pen to paper is self-care in one of its finest forms. Once the thoughts and emotions are on paper, it’s easier to see them more clearly, create space in your mind, and release thoughts that are no longer serving you. Think of it like purging the junk from your home during a cleaning session, only your mental house is being cleansed. Don’t overthink it. Just pick up the pen (or keyboard) and start writing. Sound therapy I recently discovered sound therapy and its incredible healing power. Attending a Sea Goddess Healing Arts event at the Absecon Lighthouse, I was fortunate enough to sit in on a sound bath meditation. Crystal singing bowls were played using the lighthouse as an amplifier as attendees were led through a meditative experience. The sound waves travel throughout your body, bringing harmoney through oscillation that creates a sense of balance, peace, and healing. Since I can’t attend a sound bath on demand (as much as I wish I could), I’ve explored sound healing through music apps such as Spotify. While it’s not the same experience as a live sound bath, the on-demand healing frequencies help me to calm my nervous system and recenter
when life feels like it’s spinning off the axis. Tuning forks, ocean drums, and meditative music are other forms of sound therapy to explore. Audio Books Until recently, I’ve never been an audiobook listener however, as my life got busier and I found myself with less time to read, I had to be resourceful. When I’m in the car or shower, and I need a moment to recalibrate, I put on a few minutes of whichever audiobook feels good at the moment. Sometimes I need to get lost in a fiction book that carries me away to another world, and other times, I need to look inward and will listen to a Louise Hay or Nicole LePera book. The aforementioned authors both have written life-changing books that offer small doses of peace when I need it most. Sometimes just the act of doing something for myself for 5 minutes is all I need to feel at ease. Practice the pause In Glennon Doyle’s book, Untamed, she talks about the concept of trusting your “inner knowing” and only needing to see the next step. Sometimes life gets cloudy and chaotic, and it’s hard to see the whole picture. That’s when we have the opportunity to practice the pause. Not everything needs our attention immediately, and often times we are running on fumes, operating in a state of “fight or flight.” Being conscious of when I need to take the back seat in life has served me well on my healing journey. As Glennon Doyle taught me, all I need to know is “the next right thing.” I don’t need to understand life five steps ahead. I simply need to take a pause, a deep breath, and a minute to decide what is my next best move. I invite you to take a pause. Life as a mom can be chaotic, to say the least. ine enjoys many classic partnerships, like wine & cheese, wine & chocolate, and wine & art. But what about wine & sunsets? During the summertime, sunsets tend to be even more splendid, as we have the opportunity to experience them outside, surrounded by soft sounds, warm breezes, and firefly light. While sunsets certainly don’t need any help invoking a sense of wonder, I’m a firm believer that most things are better when we can appreciate them with a glass of wine in hand. As such, for this week’s article, I wanted to share my favorite sunset pairings – three special types of wine that are delicious on their own, but will shine even brighter when complemented by the vibrant glow of a summer sunset. Sauvignon Blanc With its light to medium body and vibrant fruit flavors, Sauvignon Blanc
pairs well with many seasons, but I find myself gravitating toward this bright varietal even more often in the warmer months. Sauvignon Blanc is typically aged in stainless steel to preserve the crisp, fresh nature of the fruit, which creates the perfect beverage for a summer evening. One of my recent favorites is Imagery Sauvignon Blanc 2021 (California; on sale, $14.99), which offers abundant aromas of citrus blossom and flavors of lemon zest and grapefruit. The Sauvignon Blanc is blended with 7% dry Muscat, which adds just the right amount of softness to balance the wine’s bright acidity. Rosé Rosé is a very broad category of wine, as it is made in many of the world’s top wine regions from a huge diversity of grape varietals. While some pink wines are sweet, classic rosé is dry, crisp, and refreshing, with a solid structure of acidity. Rosé is released each spring, and slogans like “Rosé All Day” and “Yes Way, Rosé” have solidified its role as wine-ofchoice for hot days, breezy nights, and – I’d argue – summer sunsets. Reflections on personal and professional loss The Light with Raymond Tyler

aymond Tyler reflects on his interview with groundbreaking actress Nichelle Nichols. Tyler looks back and offers perspective as well on other recent personal and professional losses. The last few weeks have taken a lot for for those of us that value culture. Since I truly do not know where to begin, I will start with my most personal loss. Last week, I got a text telling me
that a close friend, and a one-time “play cousin” passed away. I think about my mortality daily and when I got the sudden news that my friend had passed, I was thankful for my health. My friend contracted Covid and because of a preexisting condition, was fine one day and gone the next. I contracted Covid and thankfully, was made aware of problematic blood pressure numbers that are now being brought down. I am mindful of the fact that I am blessed to be writing this column today. Then there is this past weekend. First, we all lost actor/director Tony Dow, known to most of us as Wally on “Leave It To Beaver.” Although I never met Dow, I have had the pleasure of speaking with, and being friends with many of his peers over the years. His peers miss him and love him. I will miss him. I was not born during the original run of the show, but I am a big brother. I have no idea if Dow was a big

brother in real life, but I always felt that Dow, Jackie Jackson and I could always sit at the same table as “big brothers.”
I have never met an older sibling of any gender, race or economic class that did not share the same deep emotional connection with each other as the “older child.” Dow was one of the first big brothers on TV. Speaking of growing up. As a child, I saw Tony/Emmy winning actress Mary Alice on every show I watched growing up - “Sanford and Son,” “Good Times,” “A Different World” and more. I was lucky enough to see her off broadway, when live theater was affordable to a then 20-something Raymond Tyler, in August Wilson’s “Fences.” She, James Earl Jones and Courtney Vance were amazing in this story of Black life brought to the stage. While processing the passing of Ms. Alice, I was in a comic book shop when I got the news that top 5 NBA player and activist Bill Russell died. I would not be writing for Shore Local without Bill Russell. His impact on my life as a professional cannot be overstated. I have never been a Celtics fan, but I have always had respect and love for Russell. I would watch interviews and be jealous that I never got to ask him a question. I almost caught up with him several times in the last 20 years, but I dreamed of at least shaking his hand and saying “thank you.” To discuss how great he was as a player, I have Russell as my No. 2 best player ever, and when I discussed who would be my first pick for an alltime great basketball team, Russell is always my No. 1. While in the same comic book shop, literally about to purchase three Star Trek original series comics, I got the text that Nichelle Nichols died. Nichols is one of the interviews that I am most proud of, not because I asked some amazing question, but because I was talking with Nichelle Nichols. In perspective, I threw her two “softball” questions, but I wanted to hear her perspective on her career as a Blaxploitation actress, and her

breaking color lines in space and in reality. ( I prepped those questions for more than two weeks). Nichols is yet another person that opened doors for me and millions that would never act. Nichelle Nichols inspired actual astronauts of color to join NASA. Today, I am the Black Art Matters curator for The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University. I sit at tables that I would not be able to clean when “Star Trek” debuted and when Bill Russell started winning NBA championships. When Nichols passed, my Facebook timeline lit up with sci-fi fans of every race and culture that had met Nichols at conventions and they all had great stories. I will always treasure my time on earth with Ms. Nichols. Because of Nichelle Nichols, Bill Russell, seeing Mary Alice in “Fences'' and growing up with Tony Dow, I will be here with another Light Column next week… “Same light time…same light channel.” Or, as Lt. Uhura would have said… “This channel is now closed. Communication ended.”

The Urge to Purge

L
ife is a series of transitions. The longer one lives, the more transitions they may go through. I wrote in my last column about our son and his family moving away in search of more opportunities. This has had a triggering effect on my wife and I in many ways, one of which is, yet another purging of our belongings; the second rendition. Watching our son fill trash cans with items that will not be making the move, awakened me to the fact that at no point is he going to want my rather extensive collection of music CDs and 6 CD changer. My World Book Encyclopedia circa 1964 is not going to be the subject of curiosity I imagined and the books I saved for his children will not be making the trip to
their new home. They will purchase whatever books they want when they are settled. I have a difficult time separating myself from certain possessions, but this transition calls for a more aggressive approach to “The Purge.” My acoustic guitar that I swore I was going to pick up again, was offered for sale on Facebook. I sold it to an old, grizzled musician who looked like he had been around the block more than a few times. He was ecstatic that he found the exact guitar he has been searching for and put together a few riffs better than that guitar ever saw under my care. A happy transition for my guitar. A slide projector to view my thousands of 35mm photography slides also found its way out of the house but what to do with the slides? After all, who is going to take the time to go through them? I then turned to the mother lode; the Tupperware bins of AAA tour books, maps, brochures and of course, Triptiks from our 1994 cross country camping trip. What pleasure was derived from flipping the pages of the Triptik over as the journey progressed.
It was such a treasure trove of information of places of interest and accommodations, that is, before the internet and the GPS. I was of the belief that without this source of information, any cross country trip by any of my children would be seriously lacking. For instance, would they know of the canoeing available in Ronceverte, West Virginia or the Cherohala Scenic Byway near Robbinsville, North Carolina? What about rafting down the Nantahala River followed by mining activity at the Gorge Ruby Mine? I have the pamphlets. Moving on through Indiana they could engage in the complete Amish experience at the Das Dutchman Essenhaus in Middlebury and continue on to experience fine dining at the Tippecanoe Place
Restaurant in South Bend. I was confident they wouldn’t know about these fine gems. The Haunted House on Hill Street in, as the pamphlet describes, “World Famous Hannibal, Missouri is another destination that can’t be missed. Twenty-Seven life size hand carved wax figures of Mark Twain, his family and other world renown characters reside there. Sadly, these pamphlets, plus many other sources of places of interest are destined for the recycling bin, victims of the technology age. It was fun going through all the printed material and reminiscing, something today’s generation will not be doing in the same fashion but I have cleared out a considerable amount of baggage and that is quite satisfying. Easy solutions to common vacation problems By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

s you and your family take your annual vacation down the Shore, you're bound to run into a few bumps. No vacation is perfect. But there are a few things you can do to ensure that your trip is as close to perfect as possible. This means packing extra sunblock and a first aid kit, picking up snacks on the way down, planning activities for each day that excite everyone in your group, and setting a healthy budget. Here is some local advice on how to proceed when your trip hits an expected bump in the road: 1. I’m lost. Where is my rental house? Google Maps or Waze apps will be your best friends for finding your rental home or motel. Download and print the directions before you leave just in case your phone dies or you can’t get a signal. In a pinch, you can always ask a local. 2. Why can’t I find beer at the grocery store? Unlike most states, New Jersey does not allow alcoholic beverages to be sold in grocery stores. Addi-
tionally, Ocean City is a dry town, so you won’t be able to purchase alcohol anywhere on the island. If you are craving an adult beverage, head over to Circle Liquors just over the Route 52 Causeway in Somers Point, or visit a Somers Point bar like Charlie’s or Josie Kelly’s. 3. It’s raining. How should I spend the day? There’s plenty to do even if the weather isn’t beach-perfect. If you are staying in Ocean City, visit Asbury Avenue between 6th and 12th streets. You’ll find boutiques, family friendly activities, and restaurants. If you are staying in Atlantic City, visit the Hard Rock Casino and play games or see a
show. The Lucky Snake Arcade in Showboat offers fun for all ages between go-karts, classic games and carnival attractions. 4. What do I need to enjoy the beach? Technically, you don’t need anything other than a beach badge. Purchase a pass on the Boardwalk or at City Hall nearby. To make the most of your experience, pack beach chairs, sunblock, swimsuits, towels and some toys for the little ones. 5. I can’t find parking! Parking can be difficult during the peak season on the islands. Use the Parkmobile app to pay for parking
along the streets (where there are meters). If you’ve been driving around for almost an hour, you might need to bite the bullet and pay high rates to park in a lot. To avoid parking problems, consider biking or walking to nearby destinations, saving you money and time. 6. I’m desperate for caffeine. Where is the closest Starbucks? You’ll be able to find Starbucks storefronts in almost every casino, in Somers Point, on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City, and on the Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township. How do I help them heal? While you enjoy the beach, avoid sun damage by applying sunblock every hour, spending time under an umbrella and covering up. If you get burned, rub aloe on your skin, drink lots of water (sunburn can dehydrate you), and protect your skin by wearing layers for the remainder of your trip. 8. What are some Jersey Shore must-dos? There’s plenty to do while you are down the Shore. Board a family-friendly pirate ship (story on page

28), ride the roller coaster at Playland Castaway Cove, bike on the Boardwalk, try fresh-caught seafood at the Deauville Inn, awe at the incredible Super American Circus, play a round of mini-golf, and dance the night away at weekly beach concerts. Check out event listings on page 12. 9. Where is the best place to eat? For breakfast, grab a table at local diners like The Windjammer, Hooked on Breakfast, Ready’s Cafe, or Augie’s. For a quick lunch, pick up grub at Yianni’s Cafe, White House Subs, Playa Bowls, or Primo Pizza. For a dinner you’ll never forget, we recommend Spadafora’s, the Irish Pub, Knife and Fork, Charlie's, Fitzpatrick's, or Vagabond. 10. How do we avoid traffic on the way home? Most Jersey Shore vacationers stay for a week, from Saturday to Saturday. By traveling on different days, you’ll save hours in the car between the island and Philadelphia. Sunday mornings tend to be the least-congested on the AC Expressway. If you can’t avoid peak times, opt for an alternative route on the Black Horse Pike or White Horse Pike, taking the Delaware Memorial Bridge, or taking the New Jersey Turnpike.

ave you ever felt the frustration of looking at a project or situation over and over and running into a mental roadblock? My wife and I were recently looking to purchase some new furniture. We have this one room which is great, but the doorways and the size of the room presented a challenge. We wanted
to buy a couch but couldn’t figure out how to put it in the room to get the most out of the space. Nothing we came up with made sense. That was until we stopped at a furniture store and spoke with a room designer, who asked us to sketch out the room on paper. She immediately came up with a solution we had never even considered. She brought fresh eyes to the project. Here's my takeaway. Think of something you need to bring fresh eyes to in your own life. It may apply to your job or something personal such as a room you’re trying to re-design. Figuratively turn your eyes away from it and come back to the situation with fresh eyes. It may not be easy to do. However, by taking a new look and approaching a problem as an outsider with no agenda, so to speak, you will have an opportunity to assess the situation with a new focus and determine a course of action.
It really does help. There have been times when I've looked at a situation and asked myself, "How would I approach this if I was an outside consultant being brought in, or how would I advise on this issue if I was asked to offer counsel to someone facing what I'm facing?” You might want to also find someone you trust (like our room designer) who can offer his or her perspective as well. It may still be the case that at some point a third
party, a totally unbiased individual, will have to be brought in to offer wisdom or advice. However, it sure doesn't hurt to try and tackle things on your own first with fresh eyes. Here is your assignment. Walk out of whatever that issue is you’re thinking about right now. The next time you walk back in, do it with fresh eyes and see if things don’t look clearer. ard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City made a surprise $2,500 donation to "Kelly's Kidz," a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering the community to fund the resources needed to provide children with toys, activities, and other essentials during their stay in the hospital. When Good Day Philadelphia Newscaster, Bob Kelly's son was
admitted to the hospital at just eight weeks old, Bob noticed a need for items to playfully distract children during their stay. Understanding first hand how overwhelming this experience can be, Bob created Kelly's Kidz with the goal to lift spirits and help ease stress that children and their parents might feel during a time of uncertainty. The Benefits of Preplanning Your Funeral, part 2 desires into consideration, but in reality, the funeral/memorial service is for the living. We hold services to memorialize and honor the life of the deceased, but we also do this to start the grieving process for the survivors. It is the surviving family members that need to go on, and not taking into account what your family may need or want can be a great disservice to them. On more than one occasion I can remember a family that wanted a service of some sort and their family member said to them before they died "I don't want anything, so don't do anything", "just cremate me or bury me or donate my body to science." Many people feel that they are disrespecting their parent/grandparent/sibling/etc if they make changes or go against their family members wishes. So, the survivors continue on with not having what they needed and have no proper closure. I find this to be a shame and so I encourage that you talk to your loved ones in advance. Find out if you are all in agreement and can satisfy everyone's needs and preferences regarding your final wishes. Stay tuned for my next column as we discuss further.

ow do we make things smoother for our loved ones when we die? The answer to that question is by preplanning your funeral. Now I know that this seems like a scary task but it will make life so much easier for your loved ones when the time comes. I will break it down into three main steps and I will go into detail with each of those steps. The first thing is really a two-step process, you need to think about what type of services you want, and you need to have a conversation with your family about what they feel they will need when you are gone. Now I know that some of you that are reading this might be surprised right now and maybe even a little confused. "What do you mean I need to ask my family what would they need or want in regards to my funeral service/memorial service/ final arrangements?" "Aren't these arrangements for me?" “I am going to do what I want, and they should do as I tell them and accept it." Well, it is true that your wishes are important and certainly your family should take your wants and

The Heatwave for Housing Continues

T
he Case-Shiller Home Price Index, which is the gold standard of house appreciation, was released last week showing that home prices across the nation rose 1.5% in the month of May. Year over year the report showed that house prices rose a very hot 19.7% which was a slight decline from the 20.6% that was previously reported. The top monthly appreciation cities were Miami at 2.9%, Tampa at 2.8%, and Dallas at 2.6%. The same cities are in the top annual appreciation. Tampa is at a blistering 36.1%, Miami is at 34% and Dallas is at 30.8%.
Also reported last week was the Federal Housing Finance Agency's House Price Index which showed that single family homes which were purchased with conforming loan amounts rose in price by 1.4% in the month of May. Year over year they are now up 18.3% which was also a slight decline from their prior month's release of 18.7%. Even though these reports are slightly lagging, because they are both for the month of May, they are still showing very hot levels of appreciation and no signs of slowing as their monthover-month gains are still around 1.5%. Getting to play bumps and runs, and long pitch shots is a rarity for local golfers, or any golfers for that matter. But the opportunities, challenge and the fun of playing those kinds of strokes abound at Twisted Dune, which is a major reason why I love playing it. The assortment of terrific par 3s is another reason, making for a memorable round at the South Jersey Shore’s truest Scottish-inspired golf course. “ The variety of our par 3s is the best at the Shore,” said Endres. “People love playing them.” O f Twisted’s short holes, the most recognizable, and most unforgettable, has to be the one at the end; the magnificent and challenging par 3 16th. Playing all the way back to more than 200 yards, it carries over a deep, sandy, rocky gulch, to a severely sloped double-tiered green. Twisted Dune’s signature hole is a stern, yet
exciting test and treat. As for the rest of the course, there isn’t a bad hole anywhere. Among the best are the backto-back, and side-by-side ninth and 10th hole par 5s. On either side of the course’s main body of water, the ninth comes into the clubhouse, and the 10th goes back out, Nine and 10 provide players two consecutive chances at birdie and very good shots at making par. The long par 5 12th hole gives golfers yet another decent chance to make birdie one hole later. Twelve features three large pot bunkers from 70 to 100 yards from the green which must be avoided at all cost.
