Summer vibes...embracing the power of positivity energy they’re giving out. One might wonder, “how do I experience happiness amidst the chaos and stress of my situation?” (We all have a situation). It begins with awareness, followed by a decision to be steadfastly positive no matter what. From the Editor Prior to that, my feelings were running the show. When I pretend I’m happy, even if I’m not really, it has a direct effect on my mental well-being. Eventually, I find myself feeling naturally more joyful. In addition, when I put on a happy face, the people around me feel better. Joy is truly contagious. Once those two things were in place, the real magic began to happen. I noticed that when I was feeling better and the people around me were happier, I was met with more favorable life outcomes. Positivity began to literally change my life. When we smile and laugh to others, it often comes right back. That’s what I call a Win-Win.

Organizations and businesses also have a vibe that can be either positive or negative. Here at Shore Local, it’s a priority to us to keep it positive. Of course, we could write about all that’s wrong in the world but it’s empowering to talk about what is right! A community is not just made up of the latest breaking news or tragedy. Rather, it is made up of the heart and souls of so many good folks doing life in a hundred different ways and going out of their way to lift one another up. Those are the stories that capture our hearts. Those are the stories we choose to share. You can find tragedy and chaos anywhere you look but when it comes to these pages, you will be met with joy, love, positivity, and inspiration. There is so much power in positivity. A summer synopsis…so far Weather By Dan Skeldon

nd just like that, the Fourth of July holiday weekend has come and gone. Some may already be saying summer is flying by, while others will revel in the fact that there’s plenty of summer left through Labor Day and the season is just kicking into full gear. But where do we stand weather-wise so far this season? We’re more than a third of the way through “meteorological summer”, which weatherfolk define as the months of June, July, and August. And we’re also a third of the way between Memorial Day and Labor Day. So here’s a post mortem on the start of the summer of 2022… so far. June as a whole: The first month of meteorological summer was a little cooler and a little drier than average. Specifically, we were about a half of a degree cooler than our June average, and about 1” of rain below average for the month. July and August are traditionally hotter and wetter than June, so we’ll see what the rest of the summer holds in store. All of South Jersey is classified as “abnormally dry” in the early July weekly drought monitor report. That’s a step before “moderate drought”, which would be the next step up if the dry weather persists through much of the sumWe've Moved! mer.

Hottest day so far: 96°, back on Friday, June 17th. But that scorcher of a day was surrounded by a pair of days with comfortably mild highs in the mid 70s, so it was one and done for the sweltering heat. That heat, while paying occasional visits to us this summer, has been far from brutal. Number of 90° days so far: Only 7 days have climbed above that 90-degree mark, 2 in May, 3 in June, and the first two days in July as well. While July into early August is traditionally the hottest time of the year, South Jersey and much of the Northeast U.S. has escaped what has been a fairly hot summer for much of the country just to our west. Number of heat waves so far: A heat wave is defined as three or more days in a row when high temperatures reach or surpass 90°. We’ve managed just one heat wave so far, and it just barely met the criteria. From June 30th through July 2nd, highs at the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) reached 90°, 91°, and 91°. Overnight lows: Yes it’s true that July and early August are likewise the time most likely to see those warm and muggy summer nights with lows stuck above 70 degrees. But they’ve been especially rare so far, with only 3 nights above 70 degrees through the Fourth of July. On the other hand, we’ve seen plenty of great early summer sleeping weather, with 14 nights dropping into the 50s, and even a chilly 47-degree low back in early June. Amount of daylight: This was always a depressing fact in my eyes. Remember the longest day of the year in terms of daylight is the first day of summer. This year, that was

June 20th, which featured almost 14 hours and 57 minutes of daylight. Now of course, there are still plenty of long days left, but each day is already growing a little shorter than the one before it. So through July 4th, we’ve already lost about 7 minutes of daylight, and we will lose about a minute of daylight per day for the next few weeks. By the end of the month, it’s almost 2 minutes per day. Of course, it’s imperceptible to most of us at first. But give it time, and it will be noticeable. Severe weather: There have been some thunderstorms from time to time, and a few severe weather events as well. There was even a brief tornado up in Camden County early in the summer. But thankfully, we’ve avoided any widespread severe weather outbreaks. Hurricane season: We’re already on the “D” storm in the Atlantic, with the next storm to form going to be named Danielle. But you may have blinked and missed the first volley of storms this year. Alex was a midJune tropical storm that was mainly a heavy rain producer from Cuba to South Florida. Bonnie took the low road across the far southern North Atlantic, closer to South America

than North America. And Colin was a short-lived and weak tropical storm along the Carolina coast last week. So we’ve seen three named storms in the first month of the season, and of course the worst is likely to come during the peak of what is likely to be another busy season. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season is mid-August through early October. Ocean temperature: There’s been nothing unusual about the ocean water off the South Jersey coast so far this year, both color and temperature-wise. Daily fluctuations are normal, but the water temperature so far this summer has been close to average. That included ocean water around 70 degrees for the Fourth of July. Our warmest ocean water is usually in early September around Labor Day, which coincides with the peak of hurricane season. Officially, there are around 60 days until Labor Day, which is Monday, September 5th this year. We’ll wait until then of course for a final summer analysis. Until then, please enjoy whatever Mother Nature decides to provide us with over the next few months. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

What you need to know about New Jersey’s new Safe Passing Law By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

t the Shore, you’ll often find cyclists, motorists and pedestrians competing for roadway space as they simultaneously hit the streets heading for the beach. This is not only a safety hazard, it raises questions about rules of the road and how to safely get around the most vulnerable roadway users. Help has arrived in New Jersey’s new Safe Passing Law. Adopted in August of last year, it took effect in March and is destined to change how drivers, pedestrians and bikers interact on the streets. The law requires drivers to maintain a minimum 4-foot distance between their vehicle and people shar-

ing the road, either on foot or on bicycles, roller skates, scooters, wheelchairs and any other low-speed device. The Division of Highway Traffic Safety, awarded an $80,000 grant to the NJ Bike and Walk Coalition to create an online resource to educate the driving public and get the word out about the rule change. The njbwc.org website went live in May and has only recently been actively promoted by the state. The new law deems people sharing the road with cars as “vulnerable users,” especially in places without sidewalks, which in those cases requires bikers and pedestrians to use the shoulder or the road itself. “This legislation was long overdue. Last year alone 246 of our vulnerable road users, pedestrians and bicyclists, died on New Jersey roadways,” said Sangeeta Badlani, founder of the Nikhil Badlani Foundation and Families for Safe Streets NJ. ”These are lives that we can save by raising

in road fatalities and serious injuries across the state, it comes at a critical time,” said Debra Kagan, executive director of the New Jersey Bike and Walk Coalition via a press statement. “This law gives us the opportunity to build awareness and prioritize safety first, making our roads safer for everyone, especially vulnerable road users.” Violating the new law will result in a driver receiving a fine of $500 and two motor vehicle points if bodily harm

awareness and enforcement of this law. This law prioritizes safety and is a step towards ending the heartbreak that so many families suffer from a loss of a loved one in a preventable crash.” The new law states that, when possible, drivers should switch lanes to avoid vulnerable users. When they can't do that, they need to give at least 4 feet of clearance, or don't pass at all and slow down to 25 mph and be prepared to stop until they can pass without endangering those who share the road. This means that, in many cases, drivers on a two-lane road cannot pass a cyclist or pedestrian if the road has solid or double lines in the middle, indicating a no-passing zone. When a rider, runner or walker is using a bike lane, drivers should slow down, approach with “due caution,” move over a lane if possible. If not, they can pass with no less than 4 feet from the person sharing the road— not the painted line. In 2021, 704 people were killed on New Jersey roads, the deadliest year since 2007. The Division of Highway Traffic Safety reports that more people were either walking or biking along the roads due to the 2020 pandemic. In 2021, pedestrian fatalities were up 24 percent, and cyclist fatalities were up 28 percent, making it the deadliest year in 30 years for vulnerable road users. “The New Jersey Safe Passing Law is the strongest safe passing law in the country, and with the increase

The Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey has published information on the Safe Passing Law on its website and has implemented a social media campaign to educate its audience on the new guidelines. AAA is running a Slow Down, Move Over campaign, the New Jersey Chiefs of Police has been educating officers in the state on the new law, and the Bike and Walk Coalition is partnering with the state to spread the news. In 2010, New Jersey law was amended to require motorists to come to a complete stop to grant pedestrians the right of way in crosswalks. Aerospace Hub lands in EHT Business Buzz By Rich Baehrle

t is a high-Tech Aviation Park locate at 600 Aviation Research Blvd, Egg Harbor Township. The Park is situated on 58 acres next to the William J. Hughes Tech Center, North America’s preeminent aviation testing and certification facility and the Atlantic City International Airport. The tech center employees approximately 4,000 employees. The first of seven buildings consisting of 66,000 square feet was completed is 2019. Eventually the Park is projected to feature 400,000 square feet of stateof-the-art research and development facilities. It will be second to none. Through literally thousands of hours of relentless dedication Howard Kyle (President of NARTP) along with county Executive Dennis Levison, Lauren Moore (Executive Director of Atlantic County Economic

Alliance), members of the South Jersey Transportation Authority and the leaders at the FAATC realized that there is a need for an Aviation Innovation Hub. Thus, the idea for the park emanated to create a link between the Nation’s foremost Tech Aviation Center, the airport, academia, Government, and the private sector. The mission is to create a collaboration and promote sustained economic growth and job creation throughout New Jersey. We can no longer simply depend on the gaming industry. Paddles Up! Dragon Boat Festival Coming to Lake Lenape

n Sunday, July 10th, Cancer Support Community New Jersey at Gilda’s Club (CSCNJ) will hold its annual fundraising event. Hundreds of participants, volunteers, vendors, spectators, and cancer survivors will gather at Mays Landing’s Lake Lenape Park West for the 6th Annual Dragon Boat Festival. In 2019, more than 650 participants and 31 teams took to the water for a day of family-friendly fun, all for a worthy cause. Festivalgoers will be in for a spectacular day of racing and fun to support programs that help the cancer community. Festivities will include the dragon boat regatta, which attracts over 30+ teams made up of men and women, alongside cancer survivors.

Attendees can enjoy a day filled with live entertainment, kids'' activities, food trucks, and libations by Cape May Brewery and Tito’s Handmade Vodka. The event is produced by Jon Henderson of Good Time Tricycle Productions. Jon is best known for producing popular local events such as the Atlantic City Beer & Music Festival, and Downbeach Seafood Festival, held at Ski Beach in Ventnor. The biggest change to this year’s event is the location. With ongoing construction work on the opposite side of the lake at Lake Lenape East,

Parking will be available at the Intex building, with Jitneys transporting attendees toand-from festival grounds throughout the day. There has been another change at Gilda’s Club. Last year, the South Jersey chapter became affiliated with Cancer Support Community, a national organization that is comprised of over 175 affiliates in the United States and Canada. With this name change, the local CSC chapter has expanded its reach, offering its services to the entire state of New Jersey. “We felt it was necessary to make a name change so that folks in Central and North Jersey would understand who we are and what we do,” says Eileen Dillon, CEO of Gilda’s Club. New members have begun participating in virtual programs, and the organization is working diligently in partnering with medical centers in Central and North Jersey. At the beginning of the pandemic, Gilda’s began offering a virtual calendar of programs for its members, a move that was vital to the future of the South Jersey chapter, according to CEO Eileen Dillon. “We have members that are going through radiation and chemotherapy. They’re not able to get out and about, and this gives them the opportunity for support.” Today, while still maintaining a virtual presence, the Linwood clubhouse has re-opened under a partial schedule. The organization has close to 2,000 members within the state of New Jersey. The Dragon Boat Festival is the largest fundraiser of the year for the local Cancer Support Community chapter. In years past, the organization has raised more than $100,000 to help local individuals with cancer through a variety of in-person programs at their Linwood clubhouse and satellite facilities at AtlantiCare

and Inspira Cancer Centers in Vineland and Mullica Hill. Between the races, a special flower ceremony will be held along the water’s edge. Paddlers and attendees are set to commemorate and honor all individuals who are affected by cancer and to remember those who have lost their battle. With more than 16,000 individuals diagnosed with cancer every year, the ceremony raises the importance of the organization's mission, to support individuals and families who are impacted. “That small piece of the event allows us to talk a little bit about what we do,” Dillon says.

ne of the great things about living here in South Jersey in the summer is the fresh fruits and vegetables. There is a good reason New Jersey is called The Garden State, although most people in other parts of the country don’t understand that. We do and we’ll be happy to keep that little secret between us. The reality is there is nothing that compares to a Jersey tomato or corn for that matter. Another favorite of our region is blueberries. Every summer our family looks forward to taking at least a couple of trips to Hammonton to a blueberry farm and harvest our fill right off the bush. Just between us, I think at least a quarter of what we pick gets “snacked on” and never makes it to

the box. It’s always a fun day and we reap the benefits into the next week, and if we freeze any, into the fall and winter as well. Like anything else in life, there are lessons to be learned from a blueberry. If you read my column regularly, you know I’m always looking for lessons. All blueberries are not created equal. When we head out to the farm, the attendant in charge is quick to point out that, although the bushes may look alike, the ones on the right are organic (meaning no pesticides are used) and the ones on the left are not. Lesson: Not everything in life that looks the same is of equal value. Blueberry plants are grown with specific uses in mind. The attendant at the fields is also quick to point out that some of the plants in one section are more tart, while others are more sweet. Some are great for jams and jellies, while others are meant for just eating raw or making muffins. Lesson: We all function best when we are in our specific giftedness and wheelhouse. Find where

you function best and operate there. It’s not always easy to tell one berry from another. Some are sweet as can be while others are tart and not quite ripe for picking. Lesson: Often in life we lack the patience to wait for something. Like the blueberry on the bush, a tart berry today could be a juicy sweet berry tomorrow. We just have to know when the timing is right and have the discipline to not make a move before it’s time. I know some of this may sound a bit corny, but if you think about it, it’s true. These might be some good lessons to pass on to your young children if, like us, you head to the blueberry farm this season. Happy harvesting! ost people who watch what they eat know that blueberries are considered to be a su-

perfood. Along with being juicy and delicious, these sweet and beautiful bites of JerseyFresh goodness are one of the healthiest snacks you will find anywhere. ll winter we long forward to trips to the beach, the squawks of seagulls, and sun rays on our skin but for those of us with little ones in tow, a beach trip can prove to be anything but relaxing. A family day by the ocean is both exciting and exhausting, memorable and messy, wonderful and worrisome. While everyone else is relaxing, it’s usually us moms that are worried about packing enough snacks, who is going to clean up the mess later, and which kid is eating sand. The waves, the sunburn, the people, and the seagulls can all cause a little anxiety for the mom trying to keep the family fun day together. Here are a few family beach day tips to make things a little easier this year. Freeze Everything From water bottles to sunscreen, Gatorade to ice packs, pack the freezer the night before your beach trip with everything you need cold the next day. Frozen water bottles serve as ice packs for the cooler, boo-boo packs if necessary, and of course, cold drinking water throughout the day. Freezing your sunscreen is a great way to soothe hot skin while keeping sunburn at bay. Frozen juice boxes and

Gatorade turn into afternoon slushies for the perfect afternoon cooldown snack. Popsicles, yogurts, and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches can all be frozen the night before a big beach day. Baby Powder This beach hack is life changing. If you’ve never been tipped off about the need for baby powder at the beach, pay attention! Invest in a giant bottle of powder and keep it in the beach bag for easily removing sand at the end of the day. Rather than dragging sand and water into the car or irritating everyone’s skin trying to scrub sand off with a dry towel, try baby powder. Pour a little onto a towel and dust the sand off baby toes and big kid elbows with ease. It’s like magic! You’ll never hit the beach without it again. A Bag For Everything Dry bags, wet bags, trash bags, oh my. You’ll need a bag for everything at the beach. Think through the day from start to finish. What can you expect you and your family to need before, during, and after the beach? You’ll need a cooler filled with cold lunches, yogurts, drinks, and fruit as well as a dry bag of goodies for things like chips, Goldfish, and other unrefridgerated items. Keep a dry bag of clothes in the car for after the beach (this is where the baby powder comes in.) A minimum of two empty bags for trash and wet clothes at the end of the day are a must! But you can never go wrong with too many back up bags. Keep extra sandwich bags on hand to store your cell phone, keys, or any other items that you want to avoid getting sand or water in.

Ideally, you’ll want these bags to be reusable canvas or some other recyclable product that doesn’t end up in the ocean but if you must bring plastic bags, remember to be diligent about disposing of them appropriately to preserve our ocean life. Blowup Baby Pool Whether you have a baby or older kids, a blow up pool is a helpful tool for a full day at the beach. For the little ones, it allows them to play in the water and enjoy the sun without the waves. For older kids, a filled baby pool can serve as a way to easily rinse hands and feet or as a water supply for sand

castle building. When they're not busy playing in the baby pool, it can be used to cool off your feet or quickly splash yourself with water to ease the heat. verything tastes better in summer (well, except soup). Fruit and veggies are blooming and ready for our taste buds. I’ve always dreamed of growing a massive garden in my backyard, gathering fresh food to incorporate into dinner, and letting the earth tell me what to cook each day. For now, I find myself diligently tending to my tiny herb garden and visiting local farmers’ markets every week. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the fresh produce, so here are some recipes to inspire you to eat fresh and delicious:

Corn Fritters

Ingredients: ● 12 ounces of fresh corn, cut from the cob ● 3 cups of oil for frying ● 2 large eggs, beaten ● 1 tbsp of cornstarch ● 1 tsp of baking powder ● ⅓ cup of milk ● 1 cup of all-purpose flour ● 3 green onions, chopped thinly

Arugula Almond Salad

1 tsp of paprika 1 tsp of salt ● 1 tsp of garlic powder In a large soup pot, heat frying oil over medium heat on the stove until it shimmers. In a large bowl, mix together corn, paprika, salt, garlic powder, flour, baking powder, cornstarch, eggs, milk and green onions. Use an ice cream scoop or spoon ● ●

Ingredients: ● 3 cups of arugula ● 1 lemon, juiced ● ⅔ cup of almonds, slivered and roasted ● ½ cup of gorgonzola ● 2 tbsp of extra virgin olive oil ● 2 garlic cloves, crushed ● 1 tsp of dijon mustard ● 1 Fuji apple, sliced thinly ● Grilled chicken or shrimp (optional) In a small bowl, whisk together lemon juice, olive oil, mustard and crushed garlic. Salt and pepper to taste, and set aside. Wash and prep all produce. Arrange in a large bowl arugula, almonds, gorgonzola, and apple slices. Pour homemade dressing over the salad and toss. Top with protein, and enjoy!

Blackberry Crisp

Ingredients: 2 cups of fresh blackberries ● ½ cup of fresh raspberries ● ½ cup of fresh blueberries ● 4 tablespoons of sugar ● 1 teaspoon of cornstarch ● 1 package of graham crackers, crushed ● 2 lemons, juiced ● 1 stick of melted butter ● ½ cup of brown sugar ● ¼ cup of quick oats ● Vanilla ice cream Place berries in a large baking dish. In a small bowl, combine the granulated sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch and ½ cup of water. Pour this mixture over the berries. Mix together graham cracker crumbs, oats, brown sugar, and melted butter to form the crust. Scoop on top of the berries. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes until the berries are soft and fragrant and the crust is crispy. Serve with vanilla ice cream. ●

3 small zucchini, sliced thinly 4 cloves of garlic, crushed ● ¼ cup of fresh basil ● ½ cup of chicken broth ● ½ cup of extra virgin olive oil ● ½ cup of half and half ● 1 cup of grated parmesan cheese ● Salt and pepper to taste Wash and prep all the veggies. Place a large pot of salted water over medium heat and add the pasta when the water begins to boil. In a large skillet, sauté the zucchini, cherry tomatoes, and garlic over medium heat with a dime-sized amount of olive oil. After the pasta is cooked al dente (6 minutes), strain and add pasta to the large skillet along with ½ cup of pasta water. Add chicken broth and cream, and leftover olive oil. Mix to● ●

Ingredients: ● 2 small cucumbers, sliced thinly into coin-sized pieces ● ½ cup of water ● ⅓ cup of rice vinegar ● 2 tablespoons of sugar ● ¼ teaspoon of red pepper flakes ● 2 tablespoons of salt ● 3 leafy sprigs of fresh dill ● 3 cloves of crushed garlic ● 2 bay leaves Place cucumber slices in a large jar (tall enough that the pickles will have at least 1 inch of space on top for any gasses). In a measuring cup or bowl, mix together water, vinegar, garlic, red pepper flakes, salt and sugar. Pour the mixture into the jar over the cucumbers. Add fresh dill and garlic, and bay leaves into the jar. Make sure all the solids are fully submerged in the liquid. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 3 weeks. The longer the pickles are submerged in the liquid, the tastier they become. Enjoy on a sandwich or by themselves as a healthy snack.

or years, eggs have gotten a bad reputation. Many people thought that the yolks cause cholesterol to elevate. I’ve even heard people (incorrectly) claim that they were as bad as cigarettes! However, the truth is that eggs have many nutritional benefits. For years, I’ve advised my clients to consume up to 6 full eggs a week (including the yolk). They’ve lost weight and improved their cholesterol. Eggs

keep you full and satisfied for hours. They are a great source of protein, and vitamins A and D. They also contain choline, the nutrient that is vital for brain development. White or brown eggs have no difference in the nutritional profile, so either choice is good for you. Plus, omega-3 is found in eggs. Do you know how to find out if the egg is bad? Simply fill a bowl with cold tap water and place your eggs in the bowl. If they sink to the bottom and lay flat on one side, then they are fresh and good to eat. A bad egg will float because of the large air cell that forms in its base. If they float, throw them out! Deviled Eggs

Ingredients: 6 fresh hard-boiled eggs, peeled and halved lengthwise ● 1/3 cup reduced-calorie mayonnaise ● 2 tbsp low-fat cottage cheese, drained ● 3 tbsp mustard ● 2 tbsp sweet pickle relish ● Salt and pepper to taste ● Paprika for sprinkling ● Parsley sprigs for garnish (optional) Directions: Place three of the egg yolks in a bowl (discard the others) and mash them. Add the mayonnaise, cottage cheese, sweet pickle relish, mustard, salt and pepper to taste. Mix all the ingredients together. The texture needs to be firm enough to pipe back into egg halves with a pastry bag or a spoon. Spoon or pipe (with a star tip) filling into egg whites, then sprinkle with the paprika. Garnish with parsley. Refrigerate and cover until ready to serve. Serves 6 ●

See and identify shells on the beach

ooking to sell seashells by the sea shore? You’ve probably seen hundreds of shells in a variety of shapes and colors as you’ve enjoyed New Jersey’s beautiful beaches. The sand you’ve stood on has been formed by rocks and shells beaten down by waves over hundreds of thousands of years. On northern beaches like Sandy Hook, you’ll notice coarser sand, and in Atlantic City, sand tends to be softer and finger. Down by Cape May, there’s pebbles and Cape May diamonds. Why? It is because of the differences in land masses, which cut the waves at different angles, causing sand’s texture to be irregular. Amongst these sands and rocks, shells along the coast of New Jersey tend to stay the same. Here are some of the most common shells you’ll find on the beach along the Jersey Shore: Knobbed Whelk This is New Jersey’s state shell. The knobbed whelk comes from a predatory sea snail, which are native along the east coast between Maine and northern Florida. The shell is dextral, meaning the snail is “right-hand-

Shark Eye ed,” or moves from the right side. The color is usually pale gray or ivy and the inside tends to be a muted orange. Surf Clam These snails live in deep water, and when they die or switch shells, their little mobile homes wash up on our coastline. Like conches, you can eat knobbed whelks deep-fried or in a salad. Blood Ark These white bivalves can be found from Canada to Brazil. Surprisingly, the shell has dark brown fur growing on it! Common Slipper Shell This shell belongs to a medium-sized snail found across the Atlantic Ocean. The boat shell, as it is also known, is considered an invasive species in Italy, Denmark, the United Kingdom, France and Spain because of its damage to oyster fisheries. They are often consumed as a part of clam juice or clam broth, and in

Hawaii, they are considered a delicacy. Ponderous Ark Rarer in New Jersey, this shell is one of the most common shells found on Sanibel Island in Florida, which is considered a beachcombing Mecca. Many tourists confuse this shell with a white shell that had tar spilled on it. It can be typically found between Virginia and the Gulf of Mexico. It resides in shallow water on the ocean floor. Blue Mussel Also known as the common mussel, this edible bivalve can be found all over the world, living primarily in intertidal areas. These mussels attach themselves to rocks and other hard substrates through their byssal threads, a secreted substance from the mollusk’s foot. Mussels have separate genders, and each male and female secretes their sperm/eggs into the water column for fertilization. This species is highly targeted by hungry jellyfish, sadly. Atlantic Surf Clam Surf clams are the largest bivalves in the North Atlantic Ocean. They can be commonly found between Maine

Northern Quahog This farmed clam is sustainably grown and harvested across the east coast. They can grow up to five inches long and live between 12 and 20 years. Females release up to five million eggs into the water column at a time! They burrow in the sand in intertidal areas and thrive when the salt content of the ocean is high. False Angelwing This is yet another species of clam. They have spoon-shaped wings, lending to their divinely ele-

They use their eyes to detect predators, such as sea stars. Shark Eye This mollusk is cannibalistic. This animal is a part of the moon snail family and can be found across the Atlantic Ocean and live under the sand, using their feet to move from spot to spot, ranging from shallow waters to over 190 feet deep. When the shark eye is hungry, he latches onto another snail and produces an acid. He drills a hole through their shell with his sharp radula (similar to a tongue in humans). Then, he injects

Eastern Oyster his acid through the hole to kill his prey, and slurps him through the hole in shell and feasts. Eastern Oyster Centuries ago, oyster populations were plentiful, but because of disease and overfishing, oysters had become endangered in the 20th century. Thankfully, populations have bounced back to healthy numbers. Oysters are wild-caught and farmed and can often be found in American cuisine. Adult oysters are sessile, meaning they stay in the same place for their entire lives. Their shell varies from off-white to brown in color.

Twilight in the Garden Let It Grow By Tammy Thornton

any consider midnight to be the witching hour, but in the garden, magic happens at twilight. In the gloaming, when night encroaches but has not completely conquered day, the garden comes to life. As the two worlds of the nocturnal and diurnal collide, something wonderful happens and you must be vigilant to take it all in. Listen for the buzzing of a hummingbird getting a nightcap from the bee balm before heading to bed. Look closely, and you may spy a sleepy bumblebee, snuggled in a purple coneflower and tucked in for the evening. Don’t blink or you will miss evening primroses blooming before your eyes, and fire-

flies twinkling in the darkening sky. While others have said goodnight to the garden, nature’s party has just begun. Those who tarry along the path for an early evening stroll will be rewarded with secrets saved for the one who walks quietly in the shadows. Along the walkway, solar-powered lights startle as they flash on one by one, like stage lights turning on for the show to begin. If you look out of the corner of your eye, you might think you’ve spied a fairy flitting by, because the mood seems ripe for such things. As the evening grows darker, your eyes begin to play tricks on you, but it might be a hummingbird moth getting a last minute sip of nectar from the milkweed. Enchantment continues as leaves and stems disappear in the dark and white flowers seem suspended in air. Inconspicuous by day, these white flowers glow in the night and take center stage in the garden. o me, baseball is the first sport you think about when you think about the summer, but this week, I want to write about more than just the “boys of summer” as I have some basketball news and even can bring hot dogs into the mix!

Since I last wrote, the Phillies have gone 4-3 without their star player Bryce Harper. However, they did lose another starting pitcher to injury. I got to see a win in-person and some fireworks too, but with the trade deadline less than a month away now, they definitely need to make some moves to upgrade their chances at a playoff spot. Summer basketball comes from the fact that some of the Sixers are about to begin in Summer League play.

The 76ers’ roster is headlined by Charles Bassey, Isaiah Joe, Trevelin Queen, Paul Reed and Jaden Springer. From the world of hockey, the Flyers are under some immense pressure right now to make a good pick on Thursday July 7th in the NHL Entry Draft. Five years after selecting Nolan Patrick with the #2 pick overall, they were forced to watch as Cale Makar from the Avalanche hoisted the Stanley Cup for Colorado. Makar went 4th overall that year, and the selection of Patrick continues to haunt the Flyers. They have the 5th overall pick in this year’s draft. It will be the fourth time since the turn of the century the Flyers have been in the top five and the sixth time they’ve picked in the top 10. They will be hoping to have better luck this time around. In football, Eagles center Jason Kelce endeared himself to the fans once again by guest bartending at The Ocean Drive in Sea Isle, and this year he upped the ante by

He’s the embodiment of, in my opinion, Philadelphia, man: gritty, nasty. You might knock him down, but he’s gonna get right back up. He’s gonna work hard, blue-collar. He embodies the city, man." I wholeheartedly agree with Scott’s opinion on this one. I almost forgot about the hot dogs, as once again Joey Chestnut won the annual Nathan’s 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island. Chestnut sealed his 15th Nathan’s championship on the 4th of July by scarfing down 63 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes. Even an injury couldn’t slow him down as Chestnut recently ruptured a tendon in his right leg, and that forced him to enter the competition on crutches and in a protective boot. Miki Sudo polished off 40 dogs and buns to take the women’s competition.

On the local front, a tip of the cap to the Atlantic Shore 13 U Babe Ruth Baseball Team as they once again are state champions. I was honored to do some public address work for their state tournament and will once again be on the mic for the Mid Atlantic Regionals starting next week. Atlantic Shore features players from Brigantine, Margate, Longport, Linwood, Northfield, Upper Twp, and Mullica. ASHORE advances to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament from July 14-20 in Ventnor, with the winning team advancing to the 13U Babe Ruth World Series in Glen Allen, VA on Aug 10-20. The Atlantic Shore 13's have established a strong tradition and program, winning state titles in 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and now 2022. The program has been to three World Series and captured the National Championship last season in Jamestown, NY. This year's team features: Ryan Bradly (Linwood), Jack Murray (Brigantine), Frank Steelman (Upper Twp), Kam Street (Brigantine), Dante Zappala (Northfield), Brayden Simon (Linwood), Brendan Mooney (Margate), Cole Stefano (Northfield), Dante Franchini (Linwood), Frank Holton (Longport), Jack Fellows (Upper Twp), Jayson Harrison (Mullica), Joe Heng (Ocean City), Mike Sher (Northfield) and Tyler Buccafurni (Northfield). The coaches are: Don Myers, Steve Myers, Frank Curtin, Rocky Lacavara, and manager Mike Gill. Keep it going boys! Lastly, I want to acknowledge EHT Boys Track & Field coach Ryan Smith, who is stepping down from that role after 12 seasons. He took over for his mentor George Wilkinson in 2011, and all he did was continue the great tradition of success with EHT Boys Track & Field. In his goodbye announcement, Smith wrote that there have been 226 seniors who have graduated from the program and

40 of those continued their track & field careers in college, along with many more who went on to be great people and great members of society as a whole. Props to you “Smitty” for doing it right, and I hope you get the time to be a full-time Dad, husband and youth coach to your own children. All the best.

Local Karate Instructor is Recognized on World Stage

he World Tang Soo Do Association was formed 40 years ago by Master Jae Chul Shin. Since then, the association has expanded to include over 36 countries, 900 studios, and 217,000 members. Among the hundreds of thousands of members, only one can be named Instructor of the Year at the bi-annual Tang Soo Do World Championship. This year, that accolade belongs to Brigantine’s own, Heidi Devine. Devine, who recently opened a second martial arts studio in Brigantine, has been training Tang Soo Do for over 18 years. She has been devoted to passing on the gifts of martial arts as an instructor for 14 of those years. Now with two studios in Atlantic County, Heidi Devine’s passion, devotion, and love for the martial arts is passed down to each student that walks through her doors. “When I started practicing martial arts, I realized why ice skating, gymnastics, and everything else never worked out for me. It was the best thing I’ve ever done, and I want to give that to anybody who needs it,” explains Devine, who prides herself on pushing her students with positivity. The Tang Soo Do Hall of Fame awards take place every two years. Devine, who is currently a 3rd Degree Black Belt and training for her 4th Degree Master rank, was blindsided by the award that she calls the biggest professional achievement of her life. While attending the invitation-only Master’s Clinic prior to the World Championship, Devine shares that even after hearing her name announced as Instructor of the Year, it took several moments for reality to set in that they were, in fact, talking about her. Coming on the heels of her new location’s grand opening, the award and recognition was confirmation for Devine that she is on the right path and exactly where she needs to be in life.

You get to come in and become a better person for yourself,” explains Devine, who has devoted her life to teaching karate. Tang Soo Do focuses on three pillars that are taught through hard work and discipline: Self defense, health, and becoming a better person. The 40-year-old practice was created by Master Jae Chul Shin in 1968 when he arrived in the United States as a representative for the Korean Soo Bahk Do Association. Formed in Burlington, NJ, Tang Soo Do has grown in popularity over the decades as a well-respected association in the martial arts world. In 1982, Jae Chul Shin was recognized as Grandmaster of the World Tang Soo Do Association. The masters, instructors, and students that follow in his footsteps carry on the legacy that is built on traditionalism, professionalism, and brotherhood/sisterhood. A Loving Tribute to Jayne Bray

A message from Passion Vines founder, Michael Bray

any of you are fortunate to have met my mom, Jayne Bray. It is with great sadness that I share that Jayne passed away peacefully last week, surrounded by her family. As many of you know, especially in our close-knit community of South Jersey, my mom was the source of my inspiration. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1990, and finding a cure for MS has been the charitable focus of Passion Vines since we first opened our doors. This debilitating neurological disease moved my mom from a cane, to a walker, and ultimately to a wheelchair. These circumstances, in spite of their challenges, never led Jayne to a space of negativity. Rather, she chose Grace – which was visible and felt by everyone she met. I know now that this was her greatest gift. While my heart is broken, I am deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to be continually by her side with my family over the last several weeks. Of all the lessons Jayne taught me throughout my life (and there are

It was a true gift to share this sacred space with my mom over the last days and weeks. While her physical form has moved on, Jayne’s Grace will continue to live in our hearts and in our actions. Jayne leaves us with many beautiful stories, and a legacy of kindness, compassion, and gratitude. As her friends will attest, Jayne was a deep

listener, and she happily gave the gift of mindfulness and attention to everyone who had the good fortune to be in her presence. Because of Jayne, The Right Notes (South Jersey’s Fight against MS) was born. Because of Jayne, we have been able to make a positive impact on the more than 400 people living with MS in Atlantic and Cape May Counties. Because of Jayne, we have raised more than $500,000 toward finding a cure. And, in Jayne's honor, we will keep going.

Our fight against MS has been made possible by the collective support of a community who passionately wanted to make a difference for Jayne, and others living with MS. For this, and so much more, I have a level of gratitude for you that is unmatched – only to be eclipsed by the love I have for my mom, Queen Jayne. In the midst of summer celebrations, I thank you for allowing me the space to share my love for Jayne. If not for her, Passion Vines would not be what it is, and I would not be who I am. In business, we have a responsibility to the Community – and I sincerely hope you feel, now and always, our efforts to make a difference and be more like Jayne. Large events come back with new rules to keep all safe

think it is safe to say we are getting back into the “normal” groove post COVID lockdowns. Large block parties, beerfests, concerts, and more have been a success so far this year. Some events are still held outside which offers more peace of mind for the COVID cautious. Recently, there have been announcements for events to be returning indoors like the Philadelphia Flower Show. With recent events in gun legislation and the ongoing COVID concerns, there is still some hesitation. Now that it is summer, everyone is preparing or has already enjoyed some long missed events. Returning to events

can be hard to navigate as the rules to attend change day by day. I noticed this the most with concerts and all the different concert venues. When attending a concert, check with the venue's “know before you go” page. If you plan to bring anything with you, most of the larger venues in Philadelphia and Camden will require you to use a clear tote bag or a clear backpack. Clear bags are not a new concept, but it was never strictly enforced until now. There are a few exceptions like small clutches and diaper bags being allowed into the show, but drawstrings and normal backpacks are a thing of the past. Though they may not be the

most fashionable, every household should have some kind of clear bag if you plan to attend a major event this summer. They make everything from backpacks to fanny packs in clear plastic. Some have a colored tone to it, but I wouldn’t risk getting turned away at the venue. Our favorite sports teams sell clear bags and totes that adhere to their stadiums guidelines for proper bag size. Don’t get stuck walking all the way back to your car. Every venue is different and has their own rules on what bags are acceptable to bring in. Some places will have lockers you can rent if you don’t want to return your prohibited items to the car. Don’t let the new enforced rule get you down. Have a show tomorrow and can’t find a clear bag? Ditch carrying everything all together and

just hold onto your wallet and sealed bottle of water. The atmosphere and excitement that events and shows give you hasn't changed. The immediate rush of joy hits as you walk through the turnstile. i ldwood Boardwalk is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations each summer; however, there are areas on the fringe of Downtown Wildwood that also have some incredible amenities and summer activities this year. Wildwood Crest is just a stone’s throw from the Convention Center and has a scenic, 3-mile-long beach which is clean, free and protected. The area is known to be more family oriented and quiet. This makes it very popular among vacationers looking for something more low key. That is not to say that the town is boring. In fact, it’s bursting with attractions

and activities, which can be enjoyed by everyone. On Saturdays this summer, they are putting on a Summer Music Series, which is 100 percent free for guests to attend. All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Park, Fern Road and Ocean Avenue. So pack your beach chairs or towels

and get ready for a summer of great live music. The series kicked off a couple of weeks ago and will continue through to Sept. 17. The lineup is a mix of local artists, covering a broad range of genres, so there is something for everyone. The next show will be by Philadel-

phia-based Legacy Band, playing an assortment of dance/party hits. They typically play weddings and are incredibly popular in the area, receiving praise from just about everyone. “The Legacy Band.. what can I say?! They know how to enlighten the crowd with their musical performances in various ways,” said Charles Anderson in a review on the band’s Facebook page. “Each member in the group is versatile and can sweep you off your feet on the dance floor with any song. They know how to party and if I have the option to select them to perform for my birthday party, I would without hesitation.” Then, on July 16, get ready to throw it back to the ’70s with a flashback concert featuring some of the biggest hits of the decade. Expect renditions of songs by artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin and Queen. Music from the ’70s is timeless, so even the young will recognize the tunes. On July 23, another Philadelphia-based band, Gypsy Wisdom, will be performing a mixture of pop, rock,

No strangers to the Wildwoods, they played at both The Wharf and The Inlet over the Fourth of July weekend. Finally, closing out the series is Eagles tribute band Winslow on Sept. 17. They will be playing songs from the music catalog of Eagles, as well as some of the solo work of Don Henley and Joe Walsh.

The Big House Band are known by their fans for their ability to get the

party going. And they will be bringing the party to Wildwood Crest on Aug. 13. “The Big House Band was great! Everyone in the band was very friendly. They played a great mix of music and kept the party going all night long. We couldn’t have been happier! Highly recommended!” fan reviewer Lauren posted on social media. One of the most recognized singers on the East Coast, Kristen of Kristen & The Noise, will take center stage on Aug. 20 with the full band. They play a mix of oldies, pop and dance music. Resistance bands are great for the on-the-go exerciser Shore Fit By Bonnie Dodd-Miller

ringing resistance bands while traveling is simple and takes up very little space. We live in a vacation town and many flock here for the summer, so why not bring your workout with you, especially if you’re not interested in buying a gym membership or paying a drop-in fee while vacationing. I love resistance bands, which vary in strength from light to hard. I teach a “Banded Bootcamp” twice per week at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Ocean City. It’s an amazing class that gets very creative, from banded circuit style stations, to banded partner drills and even floor exercises. We have a ton of fun with it. I have a great group of people that really get into the camaraderie of it all. We cheer each other on and 45 minutes goes by so quickly. If you love body weight workouts and are looking for a way to level-up your current workout situation, you might be interested in this game-changing, muscle-building tool. They are great for on-the-go exercise or sweating in small spaces like a hotel room. Resistance bands use oppositional force to train your muscles, meaning the band will feel heavier the more you pull on it. This challenges you to maintain the speed and power you

use to execute a movement through its full range of motion. I have my class partner up with a longer band that has handles. While one is in a wall sit, the other is executing high knees while being pulled back. High knees in general for a minute is intense, but now you’ve just added a whole new level of intensity. Trying to maintain that level of power just got so much more challenging. You can easily adjust your workout intensity by either choosing a band with more resistance, or moving the band to different tension points on the body, such as lower or higher on your legs to increase difficulty. We usually place them above the knee or ankle when completing lower body exercises and cardio. It’s best in my opinion to have two or three at a time with you such as a light, medium and heavy, since different muscle groups might require varying levels of resistance. When we move through stations, they take them with them. If it requires more or less resistance, they can switch it out! That way, no one is wasting any time searching for a different band. Sometimes I have them do exercises that require two at a time. One may be around the wrists while the other is above the knee. Resistance bands are great for building muscle without lugging all those heavy dumbbells around. Eventually, though, you will need to add more weight to keep progressing if muscle building is your goal. The key to helping your muscles

grow is tension, sufficient recovery and progressive load, all of which are feasible through using resistance bands alone. However, just like anything else, you have to keep adding to that load to achieve your goals. If you’re an avid user of resistance bands, know that in the future, you’ll need to up the ante because your body will eventually get used to them. Don’t worry, that won’t happen overnight. I have some very strong bands that are extremely challenging to say the least. Ask my class about the

black bands, they are killers. We will eventually add weights to keep it fresh because as an instructor, I like to mix it up. You can do moves like deadlifts, bicep curls, lunges, squats and glute bridges with both a resistance band and a dumbbell to give your workout that extra tension, resulting in more room for muscle building. There are so many ways to get creative with resistance bands. They have mini bands, longer looped bands and bands with handles. If you're on vacation and have limited space, but still want to get a workout in, consider investing in a few because they are relatively inexpensive and easy to carry anywhere. Alcohol content in wine - what does it all mean?

ver the last several weeks, I’ve used this column to discuss the key structural components of wine. So far, we’ve explored acidity, tannin, residual sugar, and fruitiness. Today, we’ll finish our journey with a discussion of the final structural component of wine: alcohol. While all wines contain alcohol, the level of alcohol will vary depending on grape varietal, growing region, and the choices of the winemaker. As a recap, wine is made when natural grape sugars are fermented into alcohol. As such, there is a vital relationship between sugar and alcohol. Some grapes (including Zinfandel and Grenache) are naturally higher in sugar, and they thus have a potential to create dry wines with a high alcohol content. That said, if the winemaker chooses to halt the

fermentation process before all the sugars have been converted to alcohol, these grapes can also produce sweeter wines with a low ABV (alcohol by volume). This is why a grape like Zinfandel is so versatile: it can be used to make robust, dry red wines, as well as light, sweet blush wines. Since warmer temperatures encourage grapes to ripen more quickly and more completely, warmer growing regions tend to produce wines with higher alcohol levels. Wines produced in warm climate zones like California, Argentina, and southern France can potentially have an ABV of 14% or higher, while comparably dry wines produced in cooler regions like Germany, northern Italy, or Burgundy, France will likely hover around 12% or 12.5% ABV. Wines with a higher alcohol content will typically feel heavier and possibly warmer on the palate. These wines could be described as “full-bodied,” “mouth-filling,” and “bold.” For a wine to feel balanced, the alcohol content must be supported by other structural elements. For example, acidity can lighten the weight of a high-ABV wine, and a firm

tannin structure will provide a foundation of texture and flavor. On the other hand, if a wine has an elevated alcohol content, low acidity, and low tannin, it will likely taste overly boozy, and it will be difficult to discern much aside from the alcohol. Balance is achieved when all structural components of a wine are working in harmony, and no component is overpowering any other. This doesn’t mean that a particular element won’t stand out, especially as you are training your palate to identify the structural components. For example, you are likely to notice the acidity of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc more prominently than its residual sugar or alcohol. The more you taste, the

more you will be able to acknowledge not only the star component in each wine, but also the supporting cast that allows the main element to shine. I hope this journey through the structural components of wine has offered some helpful guidance. I encourage you to explore new growing regions and varietals, and taste mindfully to identify as many structural components as possible in each wine. The more you taste, the more you will train your palate, and the easier it will be to identify wines you truly enjoy, and to communicate your preferences to others. f the process of moving to a new home is stressful for you, imagine what it must be like for your pets. Check out these tips to make your move safer and less stressful for you and your furry friends. Find the Right Vet Before your move, discuss the safest options for moving with your vet. Gather vet records, Ask for extra prescription refills, etc. Knowing that your pet is in good health buys you time to research a new vet where you moving. When researching a new vet, it is a good idea to ask your current vet for a referral to your new location and look for recommendations from local neighborhood social media groups. It is also a good way to meet new people in the area and socialize your animal, too.

Stockpile Your Pet’s Favorite Specialty Food In case you cannot find your pet’s favorite or special foods right away in your new area, Bringing an ample supply will help avoid delays and emergencies. Animals generally do not do well when switching foods quickly, so if you are opting for a new brand, mix half of the new food and half of the old food for a while to wean them off. Update Your Pet’s Tags Make sure that your new address and phone number are visible on any tags, and if you haven’t already, this is a good time to consider a microchip for your pet. Your vet can help you reassign the contact information if your pet already has a microchip. Do Your Homework Find out what is required in your new community. There may be stricter leash laws, specific tags required for pet sitting and walking services, or your pet may need new medications to avoid localized pests, like ticks. Manage Your Pet’s Stress Having multiple people moving items in the house can cause stress for pets. Ask a friend to watch your animal companion while this is going on.

Manage the Environment Keep as many of your pet's belongings as possible with you during the move, and pack what you must last. Never leave your dog at home alone in an empty house. A barren environment can be extremely stressful, causing behavioral and anxiety issues. If you have to keep your home empty with a pet at home, consider crating them and putting a blanket and toys in with them if it is suitable for your animal. A hack for making them comfortable in a crate sometimes is draping a towel or blanket over the crate to make them feel more safe and enclosed in a new space. Protect Your Pet During Travel Always talk to your vet about the safest possible option for traveling, based on size and breed. Look for dog seatbelts for smaller dogs, cats or puppies that will hold them to the seat with little room to

wiggle around and wander in the vehicle. For bigger animals, try a backseat hammock, which will restrain them from entering the front of the vehicle while you are focusing on the road and protect your seats from fur. Road Trip Basics Keep your pet safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. Your vet may also recommend a calming, all-natural vitamin to reduce stress and help your pet relax. Pack an on-the-go traveling kit with your pet's food, water, medications; a leash, waste bags, vaccination records, and a toy or blanket to give your pet a sense of familiarity. Soapery Sells Scents of the Shore

magine strolling through Washington Mall in Cape May. With beautiful church bells ringing and families strolling with coffees and ice cream cones in hand, you stumble upon a quaint little shop with a simple name: Shore Soaps. Corrinne Rietheimer envisioned her storefront here, in this old-fashioned Victorian shopping district. She grew up in Cape May and has always loved the slow living beach town complete with horse-drawn carriages and classic, colorful mansions. In 2013, Rietheimer was drawn to natural skincare when she moved to Philadelphia to manage a restaurant and her skin started breaking out. “My friends would tell me that the air and water in Philly was dirtier than Cape May, but when I started experimenting with making my own soap, my skin transformed,” said Rietheimer. She spent her free time studying YouTube videos, learning the ins and outs of natural, homemade products. When her friends and family became interested in her soaps, Rietheimer opened an Etsy shop, and when

business boomed, she took a chance and moved into her first storefront in Cape May. The twenty-two-year-old worked hard to expand, and in 2022, Rietheimer took on a business partner and managed a staff of six. She has two warehouses in Rio Grande, a second storefront in Stone Harbor, and booths in West End Garage in Cape May and Stainton’s in Ocean City. Shore Soaps are inspired by Rietheimer’s love of shore communities. There’s a sunburn soap with aloe vera and healing essential oils, mojito and margarita scrubs, and an SPF 30 sun stick made with coconut oil and Shea B. Rietheimer’s favorite product is the rosewater and aloe facial mist,

which brightens, tones and refreshes skin (Rietheimer says she uses it multiple times per day). This year, Rietheimer is excited to start another business: Shore Candles and Home. Shore Soap already sells some home and beauty products (as well as candles), but Rietheimer hopes to connect with women-owned crafters in India and sell their products in her stores. Today, you’ll find candles with scents like “Stone Harbor,” “Beach House,” and “Cape May” in stores and on Shore Soap’s website. When asked what makes you stand out, Rietheimer said that Shore Soaps always uses ten ingredients or less in their products. Customers should be able to recognize all ingredients in each soap, and the company uses essential oils, naturally-sourced colors, botanicals, and herbal infusions without artificial preservatives or dyes. “We do not use any parabens, or harmful chemicals or preservatives in the making of our products. Our soaps are hand-cut, and cured for 4-6 weeks before shrink wrapping at

peak-perfection and then distributed to our 20+ stockists, and our own store shelves,” said Rietheimer via her website. “I started this business because I didn’t want to work for anyone else, which I think is why most people start businesses,” said Rietheimer. “If you start a business, expect to work really hard and grow slow, but we know that we earned every little bit.” For more information on Shore Soaps, visit their website here: https://www.shoresoapscapemay. com/shop.

Summer Wind Farm Tours at ACUA

tarting July 6, the Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) will offer free summer Open House Tours of the wind farm at its Wastewater Treatment Facility on Wednesdays at 12 noon throughout July and August. ACUA’s Wastewater Treatment Facility is the largest hybrid wind and solar powered water treatment facility in the world. The wind farm is the first commercial development of its kind in the state, as well as the first coastal and urban wind farm in the nation. ACUA is able to harness the power of wind and solar projects onsite to produce a significant amount of renewable energy every day. These projects save money and reduce emissions. The tour offers visitors a chance to get a close-up view of the wind turbines, each measuring more than 380 feet from the ground to the blade’s tip, see 500 kilowatts of solar power, and learn how these renewable energy projects help the ACUA’s wastewater treatment process. “We are happy to be able to welcome people back for Summer Open House Tours,” ACUA President Rick Dovey noted. “People come to learn about the wind turbines, but they leave with an understanding of the wastewater treatment process and its importance, too. Most people don’t stop to consider what happens to the water that goes down your drain. Our tours offer a chance for people to learn about this essential environmental process.” Summer Open House tours are open to people of all ages but may be most appropriate for kids age 8 and up.

The tour lasts approximately one hour and is conducted outdoors. Please take note of ACUA’s COVID safety guidelines: ● If you are not feeling well, please do not come for a tour. It is not a problem to reschedule! ● The entire tour will be conducted OUTSIDE. ● Although you may not need it, sunscreen, bug spray, and a reusable water bottle are recommended. ● Bathroom access is limited. ● Face coverings for vaccinated visitors are no longer required when outdoors. Please do what you feel most comfortable with. ● Please maintain social distance whenever possible. ● Visitors should dress for the weather and light walking. No reservations are required, but visitors should plan to arrive in time for the 12 noon start time. Open House Tours are ideal for individuals or groups of five or less.
