The 10-year Anniversary of the Great South Jersey Derecho Weather By Dan Skeldon
W
here were you the night of June 29th, 2012? In a way, it’s our local weather equivalent to being asked where you were on the morning of 9/11. And if you were in South Jersey on that Friday night 10 years ago that started hot, sticky, yet eerily quiet, you undoubtedly remember right where you were when one of the most powerful wind storms to ever strike the area rudely awakened many of us just after midnight. It was the night we all learned a new word: derecho. And while so much happens in 10 years, it’s a night in which the sounds, sights, and scars are as vivid in my memory as if it had just happened. Let’s put that to the test. Friday June 29th, 2012 2pm: Forecasts called for an intense and likely long-lived squall line of thunderstorms to develop around Chicago and track towards DC by late evening. 6pm: I mentioned this thunderstorm complex on my 5-6pm
newscasts on NBC40 , without using the word derecho. It’s a term I knew and I studied in college, but it wasn’t a mainstream word at the time. I did stress that those viewers that had family on Delmarva to warn them of the intense storm potential later that evening. But for South Jersey, the squall line was forecast to stay on the other side of Delaware Bay, with
lots of lightning south of Cape May and nothing else expected. 9:30pm: Watching the radars all night, I became concerned that South Jersey may get brushed by the northern edge of this squall line. I inserted thunderstorms in my 11pm forecast on NBC40, and warned of severe thunderstorms with 60mph winds

and frequent lightning. I still didn’t foresee the severity of what was coming, nor did any meteorologist that I know of. 11pm: On the air on NBC40 for the 11pm news as the first warnings were issued. But the news ended at 11:30pm, so I took to Facebook and Twitter to follow the storms, still in their infancy as it turned out as the South Jersey radar was about to explode. 12:30am: Watching the core of the derecho slide down from DC to Delmarva as forecast. But the derecho suddenly extended its arm northward, as storms rapidly and violently intensified directly over Cumberland Atlantic counties. Electricity went out at NBC40 as a wall of wind hit our Linwood studios, leaving me in darkness while the winds howled outside. This was before the station had a generator, something we invested in coincidentally as a result of the derecho. Our studios were inside an old Frito Lay warehouse with no windows. So I decided to go outside to my car to get a better view of the roaring storm. Saturday, June 30th, 2012 12:35am: Big mistake as it turns out. While in my car watching what I thought was a “garden variety” severe thunderstorm, I was truly mortified. For someone who has lived through four direct hurricane strikes and never shied away from a good storm chase, I have never been more scared in my career as a meteorologist or in my life as a whole. What turned out to be likely 100+mph wind gusts uprooted entire trees, caused telephone poles to split in half, and brought power
lines down inches from my car. The sky was various shades of a portentous purple, partly from the non-stop lightning strikes, partly from transformers that were blowing, further lighting up the night sky. For the first time ever, I feared for my life, and considered myself to be in danger. With that, I ran as fast as my long legs could carry me into the darkened NBC40 studios. The sounds were still horrifying, but the only sights were from my social media feeds, not yet awake to the scope of what was ongoing outside. 1:30am: The worst had passed, but the rain continued as did the distant lightning. With massive power outages and NBC40 not a viable outlet for communication, I immediately realized that my Facebook and Twitter accounts would be my lifeline, my way to spread information and coordinate a disaster response. I didn’t sleep a wink the rest of the night. Or the weekend for that matter. And the flood of social media posts began. 3:45am: It took me 50 minutes to make the trip home from Linwood to Ocean City, a trip that normally takes 12 minutes in the dead of night. Navigating my way through so many downed trees and power lines in the dark of night, I fully realized how bad this would look come the light of day. 6:00am: The sun rose on South Jersey, and revealed the true scope of the disaster the derecho delivered. Though those that somehow slept through it, or the tens of thousands of tourists that were about to drive through it on their way to the shore for the weekend, had no idea. The true power of Mother Nature simultaneously shocks, scares, and inspires me, still ‘til this day. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

With these donations, the resort surpassed $1 million in total donations since its opening in 2018. A Salute to the Heroes of the Community Feeding Tour Views from the Shore By Brian Cahill
E
arlier this month, a new dining option opened in the lobby of Shore Medical Center called the Salute Café. As the hospital’s marketing director, I was asked to meet the owners and then let our staff know about this new offering. When I met Al Lewis and Andre Murphy, I discovered something much greater than the items on their food menu. I learned that we have welcomed two true champions of the community into the Shore family. Al and Andre grew up in the same circles in Atlantic City, but it was when they reconnected as adults that the magic happened. Al spent his career in the food and beverage industry, and Andre made a name
for himself in marketing and entertainment, including producing the overwhelmingly successful Atlantic City Idol competition in 2005. One of the key ingredients of their success was their incredible passion for helping others and giving back to the community. So when the two joined forces a few years ago, the combination of a food expert with a marketing guru proved to be a recipe for great success. Their creation? The “Healing for the Soul” organization and the Community Feeding Tour. The Community Feeding Tour’s goal is to expedite food to communities, focused on reducing food insecurity. The organization has been on the frontline since the pandemic, providing hot meals to the homeless, seniors, low-income families, schools, and first responders throughout Atlantic County. More than 10,000 people have received nutritious hot meals from the Community Feeding Tour. In the past year and a half, the Community Feeding Tour has held 140 feeding events, feeding 11,000 people.

BPU hears blowback from Ocean City on Ocean Wind plan

W
hether Ocean City will be forced to allow Ocean Wind to use Green Acres land for its offshore electric transmission cables comes down to one question: Is it reasonably necessary? The legal language can be found in the Offshore Wind Economic Development Act. The newly amended statute gives the state Board of Public Utilities the power to usurp home rule when it comes to authorizing offshore wind project infrastructure. During a virtual hearing Friday, June 24, a followup to a May virtual public hearing, lawyers from Ocean Wind, LLC, the office of the New Jersey Rate Counsel, and the city of Ocean City presented oral arguments before the state Board of Public Utilities. At issue is a petition by Ocean Wind to compel Ocean City to grant easements needed for the project. In order to transmit electricity onshore from its planned Ocean Wind 1
project, Ocean Wind says it needs to run power lines from 15 miles off the coast to the 35th Street beach, underground as much as 60 feet deep across the island until it surfaces at Crook Horn Creek so it can be run under Peck’s Bay to Roosevelt Boulevard and Upper Township. To make it legal, Ocean City needs to grant permission, or the BPU needs to override the city’s authority on behalf of Ocean Wind. The plan involves two Green Acres parcels, which combined add up to less than 1 acre, according to Gregory Eisenstark, attorney for Ocean Wind. Eisenstark said the company has been trying to get Ocean City to sign off work since its project was initially accepted by the BPU in June of 2019, but the city has shown little interest. “Ocean Wind also had an appraisal done for the two easements that it needs. It sent a formal offer letter to Ocean City offering to acquire those easements at 10 times the appraised value,” Eisenstark said. “That offer has not been accepted or even formally responded to and that resulted in the petition being filed (in February).”

Dorothy McCrosson, Ocean City solicitor, said the petition should be addressed by the Office of Administrative Law and not the BPU because the statute the petition relies on is a “hastily prepared law” that has not been tested in court. ugostina Mallous was crowned Miss New Jersey 2022 on Saturday, June 25, at Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. Mallous, a Hofstra University student, was the second runner-up in last year's competition. She entered this year as Miss Southern Maritime. his past weekend, I hosted a couple friends from Central Pennsylvania and showed them the best spots around our area. We hit the Wildwood boardwalk on Friday night, taking turns riding the roller coasters, exploring the arcades, and eating delicious seafood. On Saturday, we hit the beach, then walked the Ocean City boardwalk and got a taste of the thrills at Playland's Castaway Cove. Then, we grabbed dinner at EHT Vagabond and headed home. As I drove my friends around and between islands, I found our means of transportation, well, boring and basic. I drive a Honda Accord, and we ended up spending hours in the car

(traveling from Wildwood, to Ocean City, to EHT) listening to music and telling stories. But I asked myself, “How can getting around be a part of the vacation?” Here are some fun transportation options to level-up your shore town trip:
Golf Cart, Orange Moose Adventures
You’ve probably seen these little cruisers buzzing around the islands. These fancy carts can reach speeds of up to 35 miles per hour compared to the average golf cart’s max speed of 15 mph. Unlike traditional cars, these carts offer panoramic views and allow riders to enjoy the ocean breeze, feeling completely unencumbered. Worried about getting sand in your Mercedes? No problem in a golf cart! You can rent a golf cart for your vacation for around $120 per day, not including insurance or a deposit. For those more interested in classics, try a surrey. These icons of the shore can carry up to six adults and two little ones in the front baskets. There is no engine, so you can only travel as fast as your group can pedal. If you split the cost of the surrey rental between your group, this option is pretty cheap. It can be pretty difficult to maneuver a surrey especially making sharp turns, so you may be limited to specific low-speed roadways and the boardwalk (only in the morning). The crowd gave him a standing ovation when he walked out on the stage, even before he began to play. Mason is the co-founder of the group Traffic, and also played with Fleetwood Mac. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. O
n June 18, 2022, Joe Grimes and Fred Miller presented the 2021 Ocean City Beach Patrol group picture to Bob Harbaugh for display on the wall of his restaurant at 14th Street and the Boardwalk. Posing for the annual group picture is as much a tradition as the swimming and rowing races. The first one was taken in 1898. Many of the pictures are on display in Bob’s Restaurant. This 1943 OCBP group picture is worth a thousand words! America was fighting in World War II, but people were still coming to Ocean City to enjoy a day at the beach. These young men were making sure they did so safely. They posed around Mayor Clyde W. Struble and Captain Thomas A. Williams. It was Jack Kelly and Sims Drain’s second year on the patrol. They’re on the top row—Kelly is the fourth from the
right, Drain third from the right. They were guarding on the busy 9th Street beach when they decided to row in the doubles rowing race. It was not held in 1942 because of the war, but the Coast Guard eased the rules and allowed the race in 1943. It was held on Friday, August 13 off the 10th Street beach.

Night in Venice Weekend Adds Motown Concert and Dancing 'Stars'

cean City announced a new concert Friday to add to the festivities on Night in Venice Weekend July 22 to 24. Motown With a Twist will bring a night of the Motor City's most famous hits to the Ocean City Music Pier on July 22, and the show will feature "Dancing With the Stars" professionals Keo Motsepe and Anna Trebunskaya performing with finalists from the show, as well as vocals by finalists from "American Idol," "The Voice" and "America's Got Talent." This family-friendly night features songs from Diana Ross & The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, The Jackson 5 and everything in between. Tickets for the show ($30 and $25) go on sale Friday. A look back nearly 250 years ago:
Cape May County's Revolutionary Battle By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer
W
hen you’re relaxing by the beach or boating along the Cape May coastline, you are standing on a battleground. The Jersey Shore played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War fight for independence from Britain, including an important naval battle that took place off of Wildwood Crest. The Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet occurred on June 29, 1776, 246 years ago. It was a crucial early naval victory for the Colonies. Philadelphia served as the capital of the United States at the time, and an important seaport for keeping the Colonies supplied. The Brits were desperate to take control of the city, as it could potentially bring them victory in the war against the Colonies. The British Navy established a blockade of the Jersey Shore and the Delaware Bay to prevent the patriots from receiving war supplies by sea. To transport arms without alerting the Brits, the Pennsylvania Committee of Safety chartered the newly built, privately owned brig Nancy to run munitions and supplies from the Caribbean to Philadelphia. The Nancy spotted was off the Cape May coast on the evening Friday June 28, 1776, headed for Philadelphia with munitions and supplies for the Continental Army. As Nancy came closer, a message was sent to John Barry of the Continental frigate Lexington, anchored in the Delaware Bay, that two British frigates were

The other operation returned fire on the British ships to protect Nancy and the troops. At this point, Nancy was heavily damaged. Between 265 and 286 kegs of gunpowder had been safely removed, so Barry ordered that the sail be wrapped around 50 pounds of gunpowder and a fuse was lit. The crew abandoned the

Captain Barry’s resourcefulness has been honored by veterans and common folks alike throughout history. The Wildwood Crest Seal and the Seal of the Wildwood Crest Historical Society both feature images of Nancy. John Barry is now known as the “Father of the American Navy.” Today you’ll find a battle memorial in Wildwood Crest known as Sunset Lake and Turtle Gut Park. There’s an American Flag and a plaque dedicated to John Barry and Brigantine Nancy. This was the only battle to ever take place in Cape May County. Kids make mermaid makeovers part of their world at fantasy day camp
which has weaker currents than the open water. Only 12 children are allowed per camp, making each day more personal. Parents must ensure that their child has a fitted tail in the color of their choice, but don’t worry, Bowfish Studios has plenty of sizes and colors for everyone available for purchase. This year, Bowfish Studios is expanding to include Bowfish Braid Co. inside Stainton’s By the Sea on the Ocean City Boardwalk. This mini-salon allows people of all ages to get makeovers and fantasy-themed hairdos. Bowfish is known for its long

I
t’s the stuff of fairy tales and sailor legends and Disney movies. It’s written across T-shirts, made into plush toys and wished upon stars by little girls. The only way for mermaids to be real is through magic. Not anymore thanks to Bowfish Studios. Through beautiful makeup, colorful hair and a translucent tail, kids can transform from mere humans to mermaids. Bowfish Studios was inspired by Caitlyn Quirk, who in 2017 established Bowfish Kids on Asbury Avenue in Ocean City. The store offered unique children’s fashion from toddlers to tweens, but Quirk wanted to provide a special experience through her brand. She hired McKenna Robel, a recent high school graduate who loved hair and makeup. By brainstorming together, the partners decided to set up a fantasy salon within Bowfish Kids called Bowfish Studios. The studio dolls up little girls (and
the occasional boy) in the style of either a unicorn, fairy, pirate, dragon or of course, a mermaid. Quirk, Robel and their stylists paint iridescent scales and sparkles onto faces, style their hair (traditionally in a braid), do their nails and add a themed accessory such as a unicorn horn or starfish. To fully transform into a mermaid, parents can sign up their little one
for Mermaid Day Camp. Bowfish Studios partners with the Ocean City Paddle Company and Peace of Wood during a few dates in the summer. Between 9:15 and 11:15 a.m., children over 8 years old will learn to stand-up paddleboard, do a craft on repurposed wood, and swim with a mermaid tail. “It’s a weird experience to swim with a tail, mainly because you can’t separate your knees,” said Robel. “It’s surprisingly a really great ab workout.” Participants are required to wear a life jacket at all times around the water. The mermaids are transported via boat across the bay to a lagoon,
braid extensions, which are available in an array of colors, including ombre and rainbow options. “Although we usually style girls between the ages of 3 and 11, we want to encourage adults to get the makeover of their dreams. Why should little girls have all the fun?” said Robel.

The Sindia: Ocean City’s Famous Shipwreck By Steffen Klenk

cean City has a rich and unique history. Take a walk downtown or down a residential street, and you may notice something remarkable. But there’s one piece of history that has been buried in the sands forever. Lying underneath the 16th street beach are the remnants of a four-masted ship known as the Sindia. 329 feet in length, it was built in Belfast, Ireland in 1887, and purchased by an oil company owned by John D. Rockefeller. Divers were left to recover the oil, and sell it to soap companies under the name “Sindia Oil.” For years, the site of the wreck was a tourist destination. Beachgoers and visitors from across the eastern seaboard would travel to Ocean City to catch a glimpse of the vessel. Up until 1960, most of the wreckage was visible. Beach replen-

ishments and nor’easters would eventually bury the remainder of the ship and its contents. Only the masts would remain visible until the late 1980s when the Sindia disappeared. The site was dedicated as a historic landmark by the Department of the Interior. The story of the Sindia can be read by all. A memorial plaque now stands a block away from where she ran aground.
Scale model replica of the Sindia Today, several remnants of the Sindia can be found at the Ocean City Historical Museum. There, guests can discover the history of its travels, photos, and long-told stories from witnesses and survivors. During your visit, be sure to check out all of the exhibits that showcase the life and history of our shore community. The museum is located in the Ocean City Community Center at 1735 Simpson Avenue, and is open Monday – Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
To date, many tales have been told about shipwrecks that have taken place. Over 4,000 ships have run aground off of the New Jersey coast, but none has ever lived up to the tale about the Sindia. Buchanan is also bringing attention to different charities in need. She partners with local organizations, such as the Humane Society of Ocean City, and puts together local events. With a new presence on the bustling Ocean City boardwalk, Stainton’s is making waves and offering something special for everyone. Stainton’s Gallery by the Sea is located at 1216 Boardwalk in Ocean City and is open 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. seven days a week. Dogs and Their Unique Relationship with Weather
O
wning a dog is a big responsibility, but one that also provides a companion whose love is unconditional. Dog owners quickly learn their four-legged friends respond differently than humans to certain situations, including the changing weather. Many dog owners may notice that their pets seem particularly attuned to the weather. Changing weather can affect canines much like it does people, but dogs may also be affected in ways their owners are not. According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, dogs can feel changes in barometric pressure and even in the static electric field that occurs in the air. The American Animal Hospital Association says dogs’ behavioral chang-
es may be attributable to changes in the weather. Dogs may become agitated or overexcited by dips in barometric pressure. As electrical storms approach, some dogs may get very anxious, even running and hiding if their anxiety is especially high. Many dogs are afraid of thunder and lightning and can sense approaching storms even when they are still miles away. According to researchers at Penn State University, between 15 and 30 percent of all dogs are extremely scared of thunder and may experience a rapid increase of cortisol, a stress hormone. Dogs also can sniff out storms, detecting concentrations of chemicals common during some storms. Dogs can smell ozone in the air associated with lightning as well.
Dogs may be physically affected by weather just like their owners are. Although there is little scientific work specifically on the affects of cold or damp weather on dogs that occurs during autumn and early winter, it does seem that canines feel the effects of these changes. Owners often notice more stiffness and lameness in pets during
adverse weather conditions. Pain resulting from arthritis may increase and muscles may stiffen when the climate becomes cooler. Many animals are known to have an innate sense of changing weather or oncoming storms. Dogs can learn to anticipate meaning behind atmospheric changes that can alert others to upcoming weather.

Neshea is just one of several students benefiting from this program, took a position at AtlantiCare as patient care associate. “I get to work with nurses, I see doctors, and it’s great to see that firsthand, and it’s really helped me decide what I want to do.” The program was developed by Brian Jackson, Chief Operating Officer of Stockton’s Atlantic City Campus, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Leamor Kahanov. The idea initially began with just a few resorts, but Jackson says businesses were on board immediately. “They were very interested in supporting

our students, as well as them helping to fill some of their summer employment needs.” The ongoing labor shortage is affecting businesses up and down the Jersey Shore. This year, Hard Rock was able to recruit up to sixty J1 students from around the world to help fill some of their positions. son has been tremendous. They gain experience and see what it’s like to work in a casino.” Upon launching, over 700 students showed interest in joining the Live Work Learn program. Through Stockton’s website, interested students could look over available opportunities and indicate which jobs they were interested in. From there, Stockton took a step back “We wanted the students to have a clear understanding of what it’s like to apply for a job and go through the interview process,” Jackson says. Additionally, the university is also offering four college credits in summer work readiness, allowing students to elevate their experience. The credits they earn through the program will go towards their grad-
uation completion. Once the season has completed in August, the university will assess how the program went and what improvements can be made. University officials say they are looking to focus on Atlantic City. “We’ve received a lot of interest from other employers who want to participate next year,” Jackson says. Savory, Nutritious Hummus Wrap Recipe Nutrition By Nancy Adler
H
ummus is a nutritious snack made with chickpeas. Chickpeas, also known as Garbanzo beans, are tender legumes full of protein and nutrients. This Middle Eastern dip is made from chickpeas blended into a paste with tahini, lemon juice, olive oil and garlic. Hummus is high in many important nutrients, including protein and fiber. One tablespoon of hummus has less than 30 calories, one-third of the calories in the same amount of peanut butter. Hummus is a vegan staple that brings some healthy versatility to any diet. Hummus can be eaten hot or cold. Room temperature is sug ges ted to experience the fullest of flavors. Hummus can be enjoyed as a side dish or snack. You can eat hummus with sliced apples. You can also use it as a chip dip with pita chips. Alternatively, try spreading hummus on sandwiches and wraps.
It’s also enjoyed in salads. Celery, carrots, orange slices, yellow peppers, snow peas and sugar snap peas are great to dip in hummus. Vegetables with hummus keep the calories low and add crunch to your snack time! Ingredients: ● 1 multigrain flatbread with flaxseed ● 1/4 cup reduced-fat feta cheese with basil and tomato ● 1/4 cup onions (raw) sliced ● 1/4 cup red peppers (raw) sliced

Guide To Enjoying South Jersey During The NAACP National Convention The Light with Raymond Tyler

he NAACP will bring to Atlantic City thousands of activists, lawmakers, politicians, and vacationers that are fighting for “Justice For All.” I am supplying this weekly list leading up to the convention for members of The NAACP that want to enjoy themselves when not working on a better world. The Bungalow Park Mural By World Renowned Artist Kadir Nelson Location: The Corner of New Jersey Ave. and Wabash Avenue. Year Completed: Unknown but it is at least 30 years old Atlantic City has unfortunately had much of its African American History erased. In my opinion, the greatest piece of organic history still standing is The Bungalow Park Mural. As hot summer days cooled off I would sometimes get to The Bungalow Park Playground before the basketball games started just to look at the mural that was inspired by the

work of Ernie Barnes. The artist was a then high school painter named Kadir Nelson. The Bungalow Park Mural represents some of Nelson’s earliest art. Since painting this electric picture of 2 basketball players going at each other; Nelson has had his paintings featured on the cover of The New Yorker and album covers for Drake and Michael Jackson. While the playground itself is no longer a hub for basketball, no visit to AC is complete without seeing this grand masterpiece. Elvis Edges Out Maverick and here come the Minions That's Entertainment By Pete Thompson
U
p until Monday morning June 27th, the new release “Elvis” was neck-and-neck with “Top Gun: Maverick” for the weekend box office crown. However, after the Monday Morning Box Office Update, it’s “Elvis” winning the weekend earning 31.1 million to 29.6 for “Top Gun: Maverick”. Don’t forget, “Minions: The Rise of Gru '', which was originally scheduled to open on July 3, 2020, and then pushed due to the pandemic, finally arrives on Friday July 1st for what will be a 4-day holiday weekend. Don’t underestimate the power of a kid-friendly movie on a holiday weekend. I got some good news regarding “Downton Abbey: A New Era” as Universal elected to also make that available on streaming and Peacock. Of course, it’s available but that doesn’t mean I’ve watched it yet! Speaking of streaming, there are several movies and shows making their

return or debuting on the streaming services. Starting with “Westworld”, which has returned to HBO for Season 4. I have to admit, I gobbled up Season 1 of the show, and was slightly less interested in Season 2, but by the time Season 3 rolled around, there were too many moving parts to hold my interest. About a month back, I binge watched the entire first season of “Only Murders In The Building” the outstanding comedy series on Hulu starring Steve Martin, Martin Short & Selena Gomez. Well, now, all three of them are on the suspect list in season 2 which dropped on Friday June 24th. This one is absolutely on my “must see” list. Another series that I haven’t given a try yet, but am interested in, is “The Umbrella Academy” on Netflix. The description of the show on Wikipedia reads, “On one day in 1989, 43 infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by billionaire industrialist Sir Reginald Hargreeves, who creates the Umbrella Academy and prepares his "children" to save the world. In their teenage years, though, the family

There’s good news about a show I wrote about last week as FX has announced that they are renewing “The Old Man” for a second season. So far, only three episodes of Season 1 have aired, but last week’s episode had some major reveals to it. I continue to be riveted by Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow playing off each other. Amy Brenneman has been outstanding as well. While watching “The Old Man”, I’ve seen a lot of promos for a new series called “The Bear” and I instantly recognized lead actor Jeremy Allen White from his work as Lip in HBO’s “Shameless”. Workplace shows tend to be set in hospitals, police precincts, or nonsensical corporations. Somehow, restaurants rarely provide the setting, which is a shame because they seem to generate both drama and comedy (see: the many cooking reality shows, like Top Chef and Hell’s Kitchen). The Bear follows Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White), a young chef

Jeremy Allen White stars in The Bear trained in fine dining who returns home to Chicago to run his family sandwich shop after the death of a loved one. The Original Beef of Chicagoland is a world away from white tablecloths and pricey entrees. Carmy is forced to deal with a stubborn kitchen staff, complicated family relationships and the grind-down stress of running a small business. “The Bear” is on FX and streaming on Hulu. The last streaming option I will highlight this week is called “Loot” on Apple TV Plus. I don’t get Apple TV Plus, but I’m disappointed because “Loot” looks like a fun premise. Saturday Night Live alum Maya Rudolph sparkles in everything she does, and she gets prime billing in this new workplace comedy. Rudolph stars as Molly Novak, a billionaire who has it all — a lux mansion, a gigayacht, private jets. The only thing she lacks? A faithful husband. When her spouse of 20 years betrays her, Molly descends into a very public, embarrassing spiral that is splashed across the tabloids. After she hits rock bottom, she is surprised to discover that she has a philanthropic
foundation run by no-nonsense director Sofia (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez). To boost her image, Molly decides to work at the charity full-time, making her a (very rich) fish out of water. t’s just an awful way to have to start Extra Points this week as Phillies slugger and reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper suffers a broken thumb after getting hit by a pitch in San Diego. Now, Harper needs surgery and you have to wonder if the Phillies playoff hopes are lost?
Since I last wrote, the Phillies did win in their first game without Harper in the lineup to finish up a good weekend in San Diego, but can they keep it going? The Phillies also claimed an outfielder off waivers to give themselves some depth there. The Sixers did move the 23rd pick in the NBA draft, but picked up some veteran help in return, that they hope will

New Flyers coach John Tortorella has hit the ground running as he tries to learn his new team. Even though only 14 weeks remain in the season, Harper is said to be hopeful of returning, possibly even before the end of August. The loss of the reigning NL MVP though is going to be tough to overcome. Over the last calendar year, Harper has been the best hitter in baseball — full stop. He’s slashing .324/.424/.652 with 49 doubles and 35 home runs in 137 games since the All-Star break last year and has been worth 7.3 wins above replacement, according to Fangraphs.

Hey, the Braves won it all last year after they lost their best player in Ronald Acuna Jr., so the Phillies are going to have to hope for a little of that “magic”. Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto must step up, and it will likely take opportunistic moves at the trade deadline if the Phillies are going to win without their best player. Speaking of moves, the Phillies claimed outfielder Oscar Mercado off waivers Monday, a few days after the Guardians designated him for assignment. Mercado, 27, is batting .202 with four homers and a .604 on-base plus slugging in 114 at-bats this season. But he’s regarded as an above-average defensive center fielder. He’s a right-handed hitter, so it’s conceivable that he plays his way into a platoon with lefty-swinging Odúbel Herrera. Interim manager Rob Thomson said Sunday that Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber will get the most atbats in the designated-hitter role vacated by Harper. That would seemingly push Matt Vierling and maybe Mickey Moniak into a righty-lefty platoon in right field or left. It’s important to note, that after losing Harper, the Phillies did win two straight games in San Diego. However, the schedule gets a lot more difficult as they head into the month of July. The Phillies are among eight NL teams in the mix for six playoff spots. The next six games are at home against two teams they are chasing: the Atlanta Braves beginning Tuesday night and the St. Louis Cardinals starting Friday night. Beyond that, they have some tough series ahead in St. Louis, in Toronto, (likely with a shuffled roster to account for unvaccinated players who are barred from entering Canada), at home and on the road against both the Braves and the Mets. Finally, he’s contract friendly as he’s still in the early stages of his athletic prime and under contract for the next two years at a more than reasonable salary figure ($9.1 million in 2022-23 and $9.7 million in 2023-24). This all sounds like a WIN to me. Okay Daryl Morey, whaddya got next? Matisse Thybulle could be included in a package for P.J. Tucker. Eric Gordon’s name has also been connected with the Sixers, but they’d have to free up salary to do that, which leads us to Tobias Harris. Could Harris be on the move? The other thing to keep an eye on is what James Harden does. Kyrie Irving appeared to flirt with leaving the Brooklyn Nets before agreeing to opt-in at $36.5 million dollars. Harden has a choice to opt-in for a $47.37 million player option for the upcoming 2022-23 season, but now NBA reporter Marc Stein is floating a theory that Harden might actually opt out and agree to a new, three year deal at a lower number for the Sixers so they can go get P.J. Tucker and put Harden, Tucker & Joel Embiid together. Stay tuned.

In hockey, John Tortorella is off to a racing start with the Flyers as he attended a charity event at the Wells Fargo Center for Ed Snider Youth Hockey the night after he was formally introduced to the media. Elsewhere, I picked Colorado in six to win the Cup, and they did just that, winning Game 6 by the score of 2-1 to claim the Cup in Tampa last Sunday night. In football, the Eagles are searching for who’s going to be their starting right guard when the season opens. For years, the right side of the line had Brandon Brooks and Lane Johnson, but now Brooks has retired and the Birds are going to “audition” replacements. Displaced starting left guard Isaac Seumalo figures to get first dibs at the starting right guard spot. However, there will undoubtedly be a position battle throughout training camp. Jack Driscoll and Sua Opeta are expected to be part of the picture, while rookie Cam Jurgens, a center prospect out of Nebraska, will also take reps at right guard, according to coach Nick Sirianni. One week after the U.S. Open in men’s golf wrapped up at Brookline in Massachusetts, the top senior golfers came to Pennsylvania for the U.S. Senior Open at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, PA. I was lucky enough to attend last Thursday with my brother Chris, and we had a great time in a skybox overlooking 18 watching the likes of Jim Furyk, Jay Haas, David Duval, Woody Austin, and eventual champion Padraig Harrington come through. My brother’s quote after round one was that “the winner today was the golf course!” I couldn’t agree more, and only Harrington seemed able to power his club through the punishing rough the USGA had set up around the course. Lastly, I was excited to attend the Media Day for the BMW Champi-
onships at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware earlier this week. Normally this event has been held in the Chicago-area or the Midwest, but the Western Golf Association is trying to expand their footprint of the Evans Scholarship and bring the event to different locales. I’m stoked that the top 70 PGA Tour golfers in the world will be so close on August 16-21. I would encourage you to check it out if you can.

ueen is one of the most well-known rock bands of all time. Their legacy not only transcends generations, it extends to all corners of the globe. Queen was suddenly forced into hiatus after the death of lead singer Freddie Mercury in 1991. Countless adjectives could be used to describe Mercury: talented, flamboyant, unique, a trailblazer are a few that come to mind. His four-octave vocal range cemented him as one of the most legendary singers of all time. From his dynamic on-stage presence, to his unmistakable singing voice, Mercury embodied the title of “Rock ‘n’ Roll frontman.” Many people have tried but failed
to imitate him over the years. Although Queen tribute bands abound, good ones are few and far between. There’s an exceptional Queen tribute band with a lead singer so uncannily charismatic that you would think you were watching Mercury himself, and a band so incredibly talented that even the surviving members of Queen (Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon) have praised them. They have been hailed as the best Queen tribute act of all time, with People Magazine calling their concerts “as near to the real thing as you're likely to get.” That band is Killer Queen. Fronted by dynamic singer Patrick Myers, Killer Queen was established soon after band members learned of Mercury’s death. “It started out at university when me and my band members were sad that we would never get to hear Freddie sing again. So, we got together and performed for some of our fellow students. Before we knew it, we just exploded,” Myers said. The next thing Myers knew he was traveling all over the world, perform-

He discovered that he could sing in a way similar to Mercury, and Killer Queen was born. Myers, who is from Brighton in the United Kingdom, got his first exposure to American culture and musical taste when he attended school in North Carolina for six months when he was younger. That was when “Another One Bites the Dust” was at the top of the charts (circa 1980); however, he wasn’t allowed to mention the song in school because it was considered to be an underground song with inappropriate content. Myers went on to make a 30-year career out of performing that “underground” song, as well as Queen's full repertoire of music. Since then, Killer Queen has become one of the best-known Queen tribute acts in the world. They were the first tribute act ever to have a show on London’s West End, the British version of Broadway, and have played in the same arenas that Queen once did. They quickly made their way to America. Myers said U.S. crowds are among his absolute favorite audiences.

Fortunately for us, Killer Queen will be performing 7 p.m. Monday, July 11 on the Ocean City Music Pier, Boardwalk and Moorlyn Terrace. This will not be Myers’ first time performing in Ocean City. He not only loved the crowds the last time, he also loved the location. “I love the fact that you can have a sound check and then hit the beach within 10 seconds of each other,” he said. The upcoming show in Ocean City is meant for the audience to lose themselves and feel as though they are at a real Queen concert. Myers wants everyone to join in with the “A Oh’s,” bang their heads during “Bohemian Rhapsody,” clap their hands to
“Radio Ga Ga,” and sing along to “Love of My Life.” Everything you always wanted to do at a Queen concert, but you were never able to, is meant to be done when you see Killer Queen. And if you think they are only going to play the most famous songs, think again. “Queen had such a long career, so you really have to dive into those albums,” said Myers. So this is a show for the diehard fans, too. Like the original Queen, the shows always sell out. This is especially true since the release of the critically acclaimed film, “Bohemian Rhapsody,” in 2018. Myers said that since then, they have seen an enormous increase in the demand for shows, as has the real

Freddie Mercury’s spirit lives on in Killer Queen’s frontman, Patrick Myers. “When we come to America, there is a special feeling we get because it is the birthplace of rock ‘n’ roll. American audiences have an energy about them and a passion, and me and the band absolutely love performing in America,” Myers said. Duplicating Freddie is no easy feat, and Myers recognizes the big shoes he must fill in replicating one of the most renowned singers in history. He doesn’t feel the pressure, though, regularly practicing his vocal exercises to stay sharp. Patrick also comes from an acting background which, combined with vocal training have helped him hit the high notes. “The songs are difficult, but they are brilliant for an audience, and everyone really enjoys it,” Myers said. His appearance as Freddie is so accurate that he is almost unrecognizable when not in costume. Myers said he is grateful that he is able to live a normal life outside of the mega-stadium performances. The band’s commitment to reproducing the Queen experience encompasses meticulously designed costumes right down to Freddie’s distinctive teeth, makeup, hair, and even Freddie’s mannerisms. Killer Queen ensures they are exactly like Queen, down to every last detail. Patrick is also pursuing a solo career, having recently recorded a song called, “Gambling Responsibly,” which was inspired by a story he heard about a guy that lost everything to online gambling. Killer Queen’s most popular original song, “We Will Fight Again,” is sung in the style of Queen. Myers said it became a fan favorite during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bullying: What it is, what to look for, and how to prevent it Moms Vibe: By Krystle J. Bailey

ullying doesn’t end with the academic school year. Camps, playgrounds, and especially the internet can be breeding grounds for bullying situations. As parents, the more we understand bullying and bully prevention, the more equipped we will be to stop it in its tracks. Summer is a perfect opportunity to take a moment to educate ourselves and our children about bullying, what to look for, the detrimental effects, and what to do if we see it. According to research conducted by National Center for Educational Statistics performed in 2019, 1 out of every 5 students reported being
bullied. That 20% of children only including the reported and recorded incidents. Every year, countless bullying occurrences go unreported for various reasons, including fear of backlash, peer rejection, and a feeling of helplessness. Of the reported incidents, most of the children were victims of bullying based on their physical appearance, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation, or race/ethnicity. In the aforementioned 2019 study, students between the ages of 12-18 stated that they felt those who bullied them either had the ability to influence others’ perception of them (56%), had more social influence (50%), were physically stronger or larger (40%), or had more money (31%). So, what can we do? Understand What Bullying Actually Is When we think of bullying, we tend to divert our thoughts directly to acts of physical violence or abuse. However, as we’ve learned in recent

years, bullying doesn’t always manifest as a black eye or bruised body. Oftentimes, bullying can be verbal, emotional, or social. Bullying, in its various forms, is unwanted and aggressive, repetitive behavior that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The word “power” in this definition can include physical strength, popularity, control, or access to harmful information. In addition to the obvious forms of bullying that we are accustomed to, bullying can take the form of threats, spreading rumors, purposely excluding someone, verbal attacks, teasing, taunting, public humiliation, stealing, spitting, and more. Children affected by bullying are not always directly involved either. Studies show that all involved participants, including children who bully, children who are bullied, bystanders, kids who assist or reinforce, and outsiders, are all affected by this behavior. Understanding that bullying can look dozens of different ways helps us, as parents, to understand warning signs and how we can intervene. Be Mindful of Warning Signs We all do the best we can as parents and while we would love to assume that our child could never bully another kid, it’s important that we also keep an open mind. We can’t understand everything that goes through their minds day-to-day, how things may affect their mental state, or how their peers may influence their choices. It’s our responsibility to keep an eye out for signs of bullying in our children from all angles from the bully to the victim ,to the reinforcer or the bystander. Signs that a child may be the victim of bullying include but are not limited to, unexplainable injuries, faking frequent illnesses, changes in eating habits, declining grades, self destructive behavior, lost belongings, and difficulty sleeping. Warnings that a child may be the one bullying include increased aggression, frequent fighting with peers, visits to the principal, blaming others, and worrying about their popularity status or reputation. Any of these signs are opportunities to have a conversation with your child. Spending a few minutes each day with them in open, free conversation creates an opportunity for honest communication and windows into their world. Many children may
not respond to direct questions such as, “have you witnessed bullying in school?” However, asking about what they ate at lunch, who they played with on the playground, how they enjoyed camp, and so on, can give insight into their daily lives and shine a light on any red flags. Learn, Teach, & Speak Up One of the healthiest ways to protect kids from bullying is to help them participate in activities that spark their interest. Whether they volunteer, participate in sports or activities, or attend camp that caters to their passion, these activities offer them a chance to meet people with the same interest while building confidence and forging strong friendships. Continue to expand your knowledge about what bullying is, what to look for, and how kids can be affected then talk to your kids about it. Healthy lines of communication are critical when it comes to protecting and supporting our youth. Ask questions like “what does bullying look like to you?” and “who did you sit with at lunch today?” Attend local anti-bullying events, seminars, and classes either alone or with your children. The more of us that demonstrate that we don’t stand for bullying in any form, the more we can make a difference. As the old saying goes, “if you see something, say something.” If you see or hear about something in school, at summer camp, or online, don’t hesitate to notify the necessary authorities. As we speak up, we give our children permission to speak up for themselves too. Use your voice while encouraging children to never be afraid to use their own. Most of all, lead by example. Our children, no matter how old or young, model our behavior. Be mindful of how you talk to or about people and ask yourself how it would look if your child repeated the same. We are our children’s role models, heroes, and advocates. It is important that we act accordingly and become an active part of their healthy childhood. here is nothing more frustrating than making an offer on a home, and then hearing that the home of your dreams has been sold to someone else. The solution to this headache? Make them an offer they can't refuse by standing out among the other hungry buyers. If your offers continually get rejected, these pieces of wisdom can help you win the next bidding war on the home of your dreams. Try out some of these tips. Know Where to be Flexible Before you set your sights on your dream home, have a game plan. Go into making an offer knowing how strict or flexible your budget can be, and other contingencies. Be Prepared If you express interest in a home that you are serious about, but don't take the steps you need to follow through, the seller will not be waiting for you, especially in a competitive market. Stand out by being ready to follow through with each piece of the buying process. Make Your Down Payment Appealing The more that you can offer upfront as an escrow deposit, the more peace of mind the seller will have in following through with what you have to offer compared to other offers received. Show the seller just how serious you are about buying their home. Put Their Schedule First Remember, the seller is probably just as stressed as you are, which means that any sign of difficulty or hesitation on your part could have the seller turning to someone else. Be
open to meeting and being compliant to the seller's requests wherever you can be. Personalization is Key As much as buying a home is a serious business deal, it is a deal between real people who are both in a similar situation, so build a good relationship up front. Off of that commonality, write a personalized letter about why you love their home. Include it with your offer along with a picture of you and your family standing in front of their home. Thank the seller for sharing their home with you so they are able to visualize you as the new owner. Special needs surfing group gives all a chance to catch a wave
eart of Surfing kicked off the summer season Saturday, June 25 on the Ventnor Beach. With the support of the Ventnor City Beach Patrol and volunteer instructors, the nonprofit organization took 94 participants with autism and various other disabilities surfing. With perfect weather and water conditions, it was a great day for all involved. As an added bonus the Ventnor City Firefighters Benevolence Association stopped by to show their support and make a generous donation the organization.

When it comes to losing body fat, there are no quick fixes balanced method will always be the most sustainable. There are no “quick fixes.” You simply have to do the work. It’s important to remember that we need body fat to function, and that we can measure what a healthy amount is vs. an unhealthy amount. Too much excess body fat can be a real health concern. Body fat acts as an energy store for the body. It protects your organs, cushions joints and regulates body temperature. Women need a range of 21 to 35 percent body fat; anything above can be a red flag for diabetes and heart disease. So what’s the difference between weight loss and fat loss? I want to be clear that they are not the same. Weight loss takes into account any weight you've lost. This can include water weight and muscle mass. Fat loss, however, only takes body fat into account. This approach is more reliable if you're trying to tone up without losing muscle mass in the process.

There’s too much of it out there and most of the time, it’s about someone’s new magic pill or expensive diet plan. I am not above all of these things because they have, at times, lured me in with their magical advertising and marketing. monitor your improvement by taking pictures of your progress every month and adding more weight to your load. By maintaining muscle, your body will burn more calories and fat at rest. When it comes to cardio, this is where you have to manage things a little differently. Most people do cardio for weight loss, but if you’re trying for fat
Sustainable fat loss comes from healthy habits you check off each day: good nutrition, a mix of cardio and weight training (my favorite) and proper rest and stress management techniques. This will help you achieve fat loss that lasts for life. You don’t want to be on a roller coaster fat loss and fat gain cycle. All of the components mentioned prior that make up your fat loss approach are important. What you're eating, how you're moving, sleeping, (not) and stressing will all have an effect on your ability to lose fat. What has become increasingly popular with weight lifters is counting “macros.” Have you heard of it? If not, let me explain what this is. “Macros" is an abbreviation of the word "macronutrients" and refers to the three main food groups we need: protein, fats and carbohydrates. The volume and ratio that you need of all three is purely individual because we are not all created equal. For example, I have hypothyroidism, which presents its own challenges. There are apps that can help. I use My Fitness Pal. The nice thing about an app is that it calculates the proper food group ratios for you and gets tweaked as you lose body fat and your needs change. Protein is the building block of growing and repairing muscle mass, fat regulates healthy hormone production and carbohydrates provide energy. Regular weight-bearing exercises or strength training are the cornerstone of most fitness routines, regardless of your goal. Building muscle through resistance training can help rev up your metabolism and help you burn fat more efficiently. You’ll also need to constantly
loss you’ll need to work in a certain heart rate zone. If it’s too intense such as a spin class, you may burn muscle rather than fat, as an energy source. The easiest way to monitor it is via a smart watch. I remember back in the ’80s, we would pause during a group exercise class and ask everyone to take their pulse. Technology has simplified this for us. The target heart rate range for fat loss is about 70 percent of your maximum heart rate. To calculate that is quite simple. Start with 220 and subtract your age to get your maximum, then multiply by .70 and you’ll get where you need to be. My max is 170 and 70 percent of that is 119 beats per minute. Try it out for yourself. As I mentioned earlier, we are all different and how your body responds will be different from your sister or your closest friend. The best thing to do is focus on your nutrition and exercise, (both strength and cardio), proper rest and stress management. The bottom line is quick fixes do not work. ireworks, picnics, parades and the beach. It’s that time of year when we celebrate our nation's birth. Our story as a nation is nothing short of miraculous. With just over 200 years under our belt, we’re really still a baby as nations go. Yet we have accomplished and contributed so much to the world. Have we made mistakes and had to correct ourselves along the way? Of course! Are there parts of our past we aren’t proud of? Absolutely, there are. Were our founding fathers without fault? Of course not. But neither are any of us. We all have our flaws and missteps. However, there is a reason why so many from around the world still aspire to come to America. Here is what I know: the 56 men who put their names on the Declaration of In-

dependence 246 years ago did so pledging their lives, their fortunes and their honor. After making that pledge, many of them suffered terrible consequences losing their fortunes, their homes, and even their children killed in battle. New Jersey's own Richard Stockton for whom Stockton University is named was taken prisoner specifically for signing the Declaration. He was dragged from his bed at night and imprisoned in New York City. So as you head to a parade, the beach or barbeque and watch the fireworks, take a moment to remember with pride and gratefulness the sacrifices made for all of us so that we can live freely in this great nation today. Four Fourth of July recipes that will make your taste buds go boom

t’s almost the biggest day of the year. Thousands of tourists flood the beach, boardwalk and ocean. Families gather for barbeques, friends lounge by the pool and neighborhood kids ride bikes between water balloon fights. Everyone looks forward to the Fourth of July. There’s so much nostalgia nestled between memories of funnel cake, carousels and fireworks. However you celebrate this year, make sure that the food on your plate is memorable and delicious. Here are four Independence Day recipes that taste wonderful:
Crab Cake Sliders
Ingredients: ● 1 pound of lump crab meat, freshly-caught ● ½ cup of mayonnaise ● 1 large egg ● 1 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce ● 1 teaspoon of Old Bay seasoning ● 2 teaspoons of yellow mustard ● 1 tablespoon of dill
1 lemon, zested and juiced 2 tablespoons of melted butter ● Salt and pepper ● Pickles ● 18 mini potato buns ● 1 cup of Ranch ● ½ cup of Cocktail sauce Combine crab meat, egg, mayo, mustard, dill, Old Bay, and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Form the cakes into balls with a 2-inch diameter onto a nonstick sheet pan. Press the balls gently and brush with melted butter. Bake crab cakes for 25 minutes until brown and crispy. Whisk together lemon zest, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, cocktail sauce, and ranch. Spoon sauce onto the bottom bun. Let the crabcakes cool after cooking, for 5 minutes. Place a crab cake on the bun over the sauce, place a pickle above it and top with the other bun. Enjoy! ● ●
Red White and Blue Layered Cake
Ingredients: ● 3 cups of all-purpose flour

2 cups of white sugar 2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened ● 1 teaspoon of salt ● 1 teaspoon of baking soda ● 1 teaspoon of baking powder ● 1 cup of blueberries ● 1 cup of strawberries, chopped ● 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract ● 1 package of cream cheese ● 1 cup of powdered sugar ● 1 lemon, juiced and zested Use a stand mixer to combine wet ingredients (sugar, butter, and vanilla) on medium speed. In a large bowl, mix dry ingredients ● ●
(flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt). Slowly add dry ingredients into the wet ingredients in batches, mixing on low speed. Place strawberries and ½ cup of water in a saucepan and heat on the stove over medium heat until the berries are softened, forming a sauce. Do the same with the blueberries. Let each mixture cool for at least ten minutes. Separate the cake batter evenly into three bowls. In one bowl, add strawberries and stir into the batter, turning it red. Do the same with the

blueberries, turning that battered blue. Leave one bowl white. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Pour each batter into a nonstick circle cake pan and bake for 30 minutes. Once again using the stand mixer, whip up the frosting by mixing cream cheese, powdered sugar and lemon zest, and juice. Mix on medium speed until a frosting forms. Let cakes cool completely. Layer the cakes with frosting between each colored cake. Your patriotic dessert is ready!
Peach Caprese Salad
Ingredients: ● 8 ounces of burrata ● 2 medium peaches, pitted and cut into wedges ● 2 large heirloom tomatoes (preferably from the garden)
1 cup of julienned basil leaves ⅛ cup of flaky salt ● 2 cups of arugula ● 2 tablespoons of balsamic glaze ● ¼ cup of extra virgin olive oil On two large plates, arrange salad in this way: add arugula as a base, tear burrata into smaller pieces, place slices of tomato, add peach wedges, and top with basil leaves. Drizzle olive oil and balsamic glaze evenly and sprinkle salt on top. So refreshing! ● ●
Frozen Lemonade
Ingredients: ● 12 ripe lemons, juiced ● 1 cup of white sugar ● 1 cup of water ● 1 cup of ice ● A sprinkle of salt Blend ingredients until icy and smooth. Pour into glasses and top with a straw and mini umbrella.

Where to save and where to splurge on summer vacation

t has never been more expensive to book a vacation. Families are forced to make tough decisions on how to travel realistically. While it’s true that you can’t avoid inflated prices, you can be strategic about what kind of trip you have. So ensure smiles and savings by deciding where to skimp and where to splurge this summer vacation. Save: Hotel Rooms and House Rentals This depends on your specific needs, but keep in mind that for most people, they will only be sleeping in their vacation housing, not hanging out. When my mom and I went to Disney World, we chose a middle-ofthe-road hotel compared to a luxury resort, because we knew we would be at the parks for 12 hours each day. If your family will be spending all day on the beach and evenings on the Boardwalk, book accommodations at a cheaper place. In fact, consider
saving more money by booking an Airbnb on the mainland and driving onto the island every day. You’ll save a fortune. Note: If you are a resort lover and find yourself lounging by the pool every trip, consider splurging here. It’s all about what matters to you, so don’t feel bad spending on what you love. Splurge: MemoryMaking Activities These are the bulk of your vacation. If you are visiting Atlantic City and your favorite comedian is performing at one of the casinos, bite the bullet and book the experience. You’ll remember laughing alongside your friends for years to come. If you are spending a week at the Jersey Shore, consider scrolling through travel sites and signing up for parasailing, water parks, sunset cruises, or early-morning fishing trips. When my sister and I visited D.C. in the spring, I booked a Segway tour for us. We zipped between monuments and took incredible pictures. I will never forget those couple of hours. Save: Incidentals It’s important to pack everything you may need so you don’t have to buy it later. When my friend Drew spent the weekend down the shore, he got horrendous sunburn from our time on the beach. He ended up spending a lot of money on sunblock and aloe for his skin after the fact. Plan ahead by packing extra medication, snacks, bedding, towels and beach chairs (if you plan on being on the beach) to avoid paying inflated prices for convenience. You’ll be thankful in the long run. Splurge: Local Food When my friend Megan came to visit the shore, she knew that she wanted to taste fresh seafood (she’s a big food lover). She spent double the average price on a meal to enjoy fresh oysters and clams on the Boardwalk, and she doesn’t regret it. Every place has a special cuisine. If you really want to make the most of your trip, try the local specialties. When I was in Disney World, I made sure to prioritize Dole Whip, and when I have it now, it brings back
great memories of being at the Magic Kingdom in line for the Jungle Cruise. If you are on the island for a few days, try some iconic thincrust pizza, boardwalk fries, caramel popcorn or some delicious shellfish. Save: Getting There Don’t waste your money before your vacation begins. Gas prices are skyrocketing and flights are getting more expensive each day. Consider carpooling with family or friends and have everyone chip in. Opt for traveling off-season so you spend less time in traffic and less money on high-demand flights. Consider vacationing closer to home, like if you live near Philadelphia, coming to Ocean City instead of Myrtle Beach. Use special credit cards so you can rack up miles to use on future trips. Splurge: Souvenirs Souvenirs are great little reminders of the memories made on that wonderful escape. Splurge is a strong word, but consider buying something small to bring back with you. I always love printed photos, so whether you get professional photos of you on a log flume, swimming with dolphins or having a picnic on the beach, you can frame it when you get home. Lots of parents like to buy matching outfits for their kids so they can keep track of wanderers and have an extra look for the rest of the trip. Just make sure that your trinkets fit in your suitcase for the way home.

With its unique leaves and jewel-colored flowers, nasturtiums make a pretty addition to flower gardens while taking care of their neighbors in the vegetable beds. These easy to grow flowering plants attract beneficial insects to your garden, while repelling harmful pests. On top of all that, you can add them to a salad since the leaves and flowers are edible. Nasturtium plants have rounded leaves that look like a sea of lily pads. After a rain shower, beads of water form and dance on the waxy, waterproof leaves. The flowers grow in vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow. Both the leaves and flowers are edible and high in vitamin C, as well as containing other beneficial vitamins and minerals. The peppery taste of the leaves and flowers goes well with mixed greens for a colorful salad. Counter the spicy flavor of the leaves with the sweetness of honey and the tanginess of goat cheese on a piece of crostini. Or give a colorful kick to your spring rolls by adding nasturtium flowers that will show

You can also make an interesting nasturtium flower butter or decorate a cake with vibrant nasturtium flowers. While nasturtiums are easy to grow, the seeds have a hard outer shell. Using a process called scarification, which weakens the outer seed coating, will aid in germination. You can use a file or sandpaper to wear down the outer shell or nick it with nail clippers, being careful not to harm the inner seed. You can also soak them in water overnight (or use a combination of these methods). Once you have prepared the seeds for germination, plant them directly in
the garden since nasturtiums do not like to be transplanted or have their roots disturbed. Wait until all fear of frost is over to plant nasturtiums since they will not survive in freezing temperatures. Plant in a sunny location with well-drained soil (our
sandy South Jersey soil provides the perfect conditions for nasturtiums). Nasturtiums are like that easy-going, non-fussy friend that doesn’t need everything to be perfect to be happy. They do not need fertilizer and grow best in what gardeners call “poor” soil that is not nutrient rich. When planted in soil that is too fertile, nasturtiums may grow lots of leaves but never bloom. This old-fashioned flower, popular in cottage gardens, is loved for its rambling ways. Plant nasturtiums in hanging baskets and window boxes so they can cascade and tumble down or train them to grow upwards on fences and trellises. Though these plants are annuals and won’t survive winter, they do freely self-seed. The following spring, you may be surprised by finding new plants popping up and sprawling in your garden. Your vegetables will want to make friends with nasturtiums since they help protect neighboring plants in a relationship called companion planting. One way that nasturtiums

Oliver Lives On: a story of tragedy, loss and hope By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer
I
n October of last year, Ada Gong lived through the most horrifying experience a mother can have. While pregnant with her third child, William Oliver Herrarra, she heard devastating news from her doctor. The umbilical cord had wrapped around his neck twice, causing the baby they called Oliver to lose oxygen. “There is no heartbeat,” the doctor said. Gong, 34, gave birth to a stillborn baby. She held Oliver in her arms as she wept. Gong’s husband, William; daughter Victoria, 14; son Lukas, 10, and her mother visited Gong in the hospital and offered their love to baby Oliver. Shore Medical Center in Somers Point, where Gong gave birth to her full-term stillborn child, doesn’t experience perinatal death very often. The hospital sent grief and loss counselors and specialty nurses to console the family, and after they cuddled the baby for about a day, they had to pass him over to the medical staff, never able to hold him again. Trying to reconcile her grief, Gong attended support groups for moms
who have experienced similar tragedies. She learned about Cuddle Cots, which are cooling pads that lower the temperature of the baby’s body so it stays intact longer. Without a Cuddle Cot, a family may only have a few hours to spend with the baby, but with a Cuddle Cot, it can extend that time to five days. The grief-stricken mother decided to start a legacy project in Oliver’s honor to fund a Cuddle Cot for Shore Medical Center.
The device costs almost $3,000. Gong plans to pay for a portion of the cost personally and fundraise the rest. The family created a Gofundme titled “Oliver Lives On,” which has raised more than $1,900 so far. The TEARS Foundation, a nationwide organization that supports families who have lost a child, connected with Gong and has been in talks with the family to potentially fund the Cuddle Cot in its entirety, ensuring that if the device is donated to Shore Medical Center, a plaque will list Oliver’s name along with the name of the foundation. The Gong family hopes to present Shore Medical Center with the Cuddle Cot on Oliver’s first birthday, Oct. 12, 2022. The Gofundme Gong page states: “Help us prevent Oliver's story from being lost as just another statistic. Help us raise awareness of perinatal and neonatal loss by sharing this platform and our project ‘Oliver Lives On.’ “Please help us keep Oliver's story alive. Our babies should not be taboo subjects. Throughout its lifetime, a shark will shed approximately 35,000 teeth. Those who have an interest in searching for shark’s teeth may have some luck. Locally, Big Brook Preserve in Colts Neck, Monmouth County would be your best bet to do some fossil hunting. tepping onto the beach can be quite an adventure. One of my favorite activities any time of the year is beachcombing. You never know what treasures will be found next. From sea glass, sharks teeth, seashells to driftwood, our beaches are filled with treasures of the sea. The word “beachcombing” first originated from an 1840 book by Richard Henry Dana Jr. titled Two Years Before the Mast. It was described as residents of the South Pacific Islands who would “comb” the beach in search of ship’s goods that had been lost at sea, shipwrecked items, which they used as goods for trade. Today, seashells are the most beautiful, sought after treasures. They were once home to various mollusks (slimy-like creatures such as snails or clams). Their delicate bodies secrete calcium carbonate that hardens on their bodies, creating a shell which continues to grow until the mollusk dies. Do you ever wonder why there is a single hole in a shell? While in the ocean, a moon snail attaches itself to the shell of clams, releasing an acid that causes the shell to soften. It then drills a hole using its long, sharp tongue called a radula, and eats the clam inside. Shells you can expect to find along our shores vary in size and color. Bay scallops, Atlantic ribbed mussels, oysters and razor clams are just a few of them. The most sought after shells are the Whelks, white surf clams, starfish and sand dollars, which are a real treasure if found fully intact. Other treasures include pieces

Make sure there are no sea creatures living inside your collection of shells. If a shells feels just slightly heavier than normal, carefully check before placing it in your bag or pocket. The ocean is their home too. Also, be alert for horseshoe crabs that have washed ashore. They may look dead with the underside up. If turned over gently, you may find it making its way back into the water. Be aware of slippery •

In an effort to prevent trash from impacting our oceans, families, individuals and beach clean-up groups can identify their findings with the Marine Debris Tracker. Launched in 2010, the website, marinedebris.engr.uga.edu, has logged over 1.5 million pieces of ocean debris, submitted by users worldwide. Marine Debris Tracker is supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). There are many shell and sea glass magazines for both adults and children that include endless ideas for family oriented activities. Shell painting, making wind chimes, even a fun beach game of shell toss are just some of the fun projects you can create. Whether you’re looking for art, inspiration, curiosity or general interest, beachcombing can be a fun activity for all. Be gentle with our shore life and protect our local wildlife and beaches. Comparing Sweet and Fruity Wines

T
he next stop on our journey through the structural components of wine is a sweet one – we’re talking sugar. Residual sugar, to be precise. During fermentation, yeasts convert natural grape sugars into alcohol. Any grape sugars remaining in the wine after fermentation are referred to as residual sugar (or RS). Different grape varietals have varying levels of residual sugar, and it’s also possible for the winemaker to halt the fermentation process before all the sugar is transformed into alcohol. Thus, the type of grape used, as well as the decisions of the winemaker, have a massive impact on the sweetness (or dryness) of the finished wine. When it comes to wine, there is an important distinction between sweetness and fruitiness. The hallmark tasting notes of certain wines
can lead us to believe we will be sampling a liquid confection. Descriptors like “ripe berry fruit,” “juicy peach,” and “strawberry jam” prepare our palates for a fruit-based dessert. Certain flavor qualities enhance our perception of sweetness, without indicating an elevated level of residual sugar. We taste notes of vanilla and baking spice in an oaky California Chardonnay, and we assume the sugar level of the wine must match the flavor impressions. In reality, many wines – such as Sauvignon Blancs and Chardonnays – offer an essence of fruity, sweet flavors, while still being technically and structurally dry. While dry wines are often considered superior to sweet wines, it’s worth noting that some of the most exceptional and age-worthy wines in the world are dessert wines with formidable levels of residual sugar. Reserve Port, French Sauternes, and Hungarian Tokaj are renowned as some of the best wines in the world, and they are also some of the sweetest. They avoid becoming cloyingly saccharine, and stand the test of time, due to their formidable

structure of acidity. Wine is all about balance, and acidity provides the necessary backbone to support sweet wines and prevent them from tasting dull, flat, and flabby. For this week’s tasting experiment, I encourage you to try a dry, fruit-driven white wine (perhaps a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, like Babich Sauvignon Blanc 2021). Taste the wine on its own, and consider the flavor impressions you detect, along with other notable features, like the wine’s mouthfeel and level of acidity. Next, I’d suggest that you taste a sweeter white wine, such as a German Riesling (try Dr. Loosen Riesling 2020 from Germany’s Mosel region). Consider the flavor impressions of this
wine, and note how it tastes and feels different on your palate. A comparison of the two will offer you a clear study on the difference between acidity and residual sugar in wine, and how the two can interact in balance. If you’re feeling truly daring, you could try adding a small amount of table sugar to a bit of your Sauvignon Blanc. I know this sounds weird! And I wouldn’t recommend this under normal circumstances. But for the purposes of training your palate and experimenting with sugar and acidity, this will provide an excellent lesson on how the addition of sugar impacts acidity, and vice versa. One Journey Ends, Another Begins

Chinese proverb says, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” At this writing today, I completed a journey that started ten years ago but it was far shorter than a thousand miles. The journey was only one block long in Margate but metaphorically, it was a thousand miles. To those of you who have not seen the Netflix series, Downton Abbey, a story about a family of class and privilege set in 1912-1914, my apologies as you might not fully grasp my struggle. I also recently watched the film, Downton Abbey: A New Era. These programs resonated with me since my Mum was British and did everything she could to raise her sons as Englishmen including bringing us

to England every couple years and even enrolling me in school there for a few months. One unintended result was me flunking a spelling test in school when I returned to America because I spelled some words in the way I learned in the English school; colour, flavour, defence for example. Mum marched right into the school and severely dressed down the teacher telling her our language was called English for a reason and not American. It is, in fact, HER error for not teaching the King’s English correctly. My grade was changed. This is an example of the same pride and whit that ran through the series. At times, it seemed like my Mum was writing the dialogue for the show with some of the lines reverberating with me of days gone by. After watching the film, I went to bed with thoughts of the movie, the family dynamics, their struggles, etc. still playing in my head. I awoke at 3:30 in the morning with a sort of epiphany triggered by Downton Abbey, I am sure. I haven’t walked down my old street in Margate in the ten years since we had to sell the property due to our own family dynamics and struggles. It was
a beautiful home that housed our family for over fifty years. The fact that we had to sell it broke my heart. But then, it suffered the same fate as many of the grand old houses on our island. It was destroyed and replaced with the white and black cookie cutter houses devoid of character that are permeating our area. During my errands which would take me past Hanover Avenue, I would avert my eyes or reluctantly steal a glance out of the corner of my eye. Today though, I decided it was time to take that first step. It was time to tap into my British heritage and “have a stiff upper lip” to “keep calm and carry on” as they say. I would take that journey, so I drove to Hanover Avenue,
parked the car and walked up and down both sides taking it all in. The street felt smaller even though it had only been ten years. The openness that our rancher with the expansive driveway lent to the neighborhood was gone. The street felt claustrophobic. Small houses were replaced with bigger, taller houses. But when I got back in the car, I felt that my journey was complete. A chapter that I did not know was still open, was closed and perhaps I can now move on. Who would have thought a show like Downton Abbey would have been the impetus, a catalyst for such change? Perhaps Mum would have. It was a reminder of the example she set for me and from where I came. I am sure she would have loved the show. Charles Eberson has been in the newspaper business for over 25 years.
