Are Tornadoes Becoming More Common in South Jersey?

O

ver a dozen tornadoes touched down in New Jersey in 2021.

That’s an impressive and a scary number. After all, over the last seven decades, the state averages only 2 tornadoes a year.

No, South Jersey is not the new tornado alley., and thankfully should never lay claim to that title. That notorious distinction is bestowed upon areas from Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas east into the Mississippi Valley. So don’t expect a torrent of storm chasers to be patrolling the Black Horse Pike or Garden State Parkway anytime soon. Likewise, I don’t expect tornado sirens to go up in every shore and mainland community either.

But over the last few years, there’s certainly been an uptick in severe weather outbreaks across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Only three years since 1950 have seen double digit tornado touchdowns in the Garden State, and two of those years are 2019 (10 tornadoes) and 2021 (13 tornadoes). The only other year, 1989, is the current record holder, when 17 tornadoes were confirmed to have We've Moved! struck the state..

So is this a blip that will go away, or the start of a trend that will likely continue? Of course, there’s no definitive answer, as only time will tell.

There have been similar blips in the past, like 1987 through 1990, which faded away after a 4-year stretch when we averaged 10 per season.

But our climate is changing, and warmer and more humid trends are undeniable over the last decade or two. Usually, heat and humidity are directly correlated with severe weather outbreaks, as higher heat and humidity levels usually spawn more frequent and more intense severe weather outbreaks. So climate change by itself would suggest that a gradual uptick in tornadoes would be a reasonable expectation over the coming decades.

Further, tropical activity is up in the Atlantic Ocean, as previous columns have addressed. We’ve had six consecutive seasons of above average activity in the Atlantic, and this one is predicted to be the seventh. Landfalling tropical storms and hurricanes, as well as their eventual remnants, are notorious for spinning up tornadoes as they track over land.

So if there are more hurricanes each year, the active tropical season can lead to higher tornado numbers each year as well. Over the last few years, Isaias, Fred, and Ida are all tropical systems that have all spawned tornadoes over New Jersey.

There’s also some studies that reflect that our aforementioned

tornado alley, which traditionally has lied across the Southern Plains from Texas to Oklahoma to Kansas, is also shifting east just a bit, closer to the lower and mid-Mississippi Valley. It’s not conclusive, and even if it was, that’s still of course far away from our backyards here in South Jersey.

But it is still significant enough that if true, can create an uptick farther east along the East Coast as well.

Tornadoes, perhaps even more than hurricanes, are headline and attention grabbing vortexes, and for good reason. While only on the ground for a short time and over a localized area, they can be devastating and destructive, like the EF3 Mullica Hill tornado in Gloucester County last year, one of the strongest ever to hit the state.

But whether it’s 2 or 12 per year, tornadoes are still rare in New Jersey.

The last tornado to touch down in Atlantic County was back in July of 2001, when a waterspout over Great

Egg Harbor Bay moved ashore in Somers Point and became a tornado.

Cape May and Ocean counties have seen more recent examples of twisters, due to landfalling or remnant tropical systems. In Cape May County, both Woodbine and Marmora have seen twisters over the last few years. Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, and Mercer counties have been especially tornado-prone of late.

All things considered, the chance that any one of us will see a tornado in South Jersey is still very small. But chances for being under tornado watches or even tornado warnings may be a little higher going forward. And if our future is warmer and stickier with more tropical activity, the average number of tornadoes may tick up from 2 to 3 or 4 in the decades ahead.

Still hardly enough for those storm chasers to relocate from Oklahoma to South Jersey.

Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

marshes and the tributaries, as Weich explains. “Once you decimate those grasses, you’re just left with mud flats, and they don’t absorb nearly as much of an impact of a storm or lesson the blow of a nor’easter as opposed to a healthy salt marsh.”

In recent months, new road signs have been placed along the Margate Causeway, with indicators to warn drivers of the turtles’ presence at peak season. If you see a turtle walking along the road, you can stop your vehicle, if it is safe, and move them to the other side of the road. It is important to place them in the direction they were traveling. “If you put them back, they will turn right back around and try again,” says Weich.

While diamondback terrapins are docile creatures, they can have very powerful jaws. For that reason, Weich warns not to put your fingers near their face or mouth. It is also important to pick them up from both sides of their shell, or by placing one hand underneath and one on the side

n South Jersey, we are lucky to live in a diverse ecosystem. In recent weeks, the diamondback terrapins have re-appeared throughout much of the local region, and work is actively underway to ensure their safety and to bring awareness of their presence.

The Margate Terrapin Rescue Project, a group that is dedicated to helping diamondback terrapins, led a volunteer effort to install roadside barriers along the Margate Causeway last month. The non-profit organization also operates daily patrols during peak nesting season, which begins in early June and can last until mid-July. Kimberly Weich, Primary Coordinator and President of the Nonprofit, says community volunteers play a major role in tracking data and other vital information.

When the bill was voted out of committee in March, Polistina urged his colleagues to support adding a train stop near the airport in the Pomona section of Galloway Township.

For decades local business leaders, most recently the Atlantic City Rail Line Coalition, have pushed to offer easier access to ACY from Philadelphia and Absecon Island by creating a an airport rail stop that would replace the current shuttle bus service.

If a train stop were built, it would likely be on Route 30, close to Pomona Commons, a mixed-use, multi-million-dollar redevelopment project approved by Galloway Township Council last summer.

Meanwhile, other airport changes are in the offing for Atlantic City International.

Spirit Airlines, which is the sole airline flying out of ACY, says it will decide between two competing takeover before the end of June.

The company will be purchased by either Frontier Airlines or JetBlue Airways, which made a cash offer for Spirit of over $3.6 billion in early June. Spirit rejected the initial offer, so JetBlue offered another $100 million, with a $350 million breakup charge.

Frontier claims that it has had a deal in place since February and Spirit should stick to its original agreement.

“The board expects to bring the process to a conclusion and provide an update to stockholders” ahead of its June 30 meeting, Spirit CEO Ted Christie said in a statement to CNBC.

Spirit shares have risen dramatically since the buyer standoff, rising over 3.4 percent. JetBlue is offering to pay an additional $1.50 per share if Spirit chooses their deal. Frontier’s shares have risen 1.5 percent and JetBlue’s shares have risen 0.5 percent.

Whatever offer Spirit accepts would affect the destinations available to ACY flyers.

Today, the Atlantic City airport offers 10 different direct-flight destination options, including Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Atlanta, West Palm Beach, Tampa, Myrtle Beach, Miami, San Juan, and Cancun.

Frontier, like Spirit, is considered a low-cost carrier, so experts predict that prices for flights from either airline would not rise. Neither Frontier nor Spirit has received rave reviews from flyers, so service will not be luxurious.

Travel writers from USA Today note that since Frontier is based in Denver, consumers can expect to have more options traveling west to destinations like Honolulu, San Diego, Vancouver and Seattle.

Spirit’s decision is bound to affect ACY, but the exact implications of each decision remain unknown. The merger could lead to flight crew layoffs, which is one of the few glaring negative side effects of the buyout.

Thankfully, a decision is coming soon, so sit tight and prepare for big changes coming to our local airport.

AC Seafood and Music Festival is going big at Bader Field

he Steel Pier presents three days of endless fresh seafood and non-stop music, shopping, and entertainment at the Atlantic City Seafood and Music Festival at Bader Field (545 North Albany Avenue) from June 24th through June 26th. Activities will kick off on Friday the 24th from 4 pm until 9 pm.

There will be live music from Teddi Fusco between 4 and 6 pm, followed

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

T

here are a few things that South Jerseyans are passionate about: beaches, boardwalks, subs (please, don’t call them heroes, hoagies or God forbid, grinders), and rowing.

Rowing has an impressive legacy, especially in Atlantic and Cape May counties. The rowing in this area can be broken down into two varieties: ocean rowing by lifeguards, and the rowing of racing shells. This column is about racing shells and the boys and girls who race them.

The 2022 Youth National Rowing Championships were held June 9-12 in Nathan-Benderson Park in Sarasota-Bradenton, Fla. Thirty-five hundred high school and junior rowers were scheduled to compete in 777 boats over four days of racing.

These teenagers came from all corners of the country, including California, Oregon and Texas, just to name a few states.

As an oarsman for more than 50

years, and the father of a son and a daughter who rowed in high school and college, I was truly disappointed that the schools of Atlantic and Cape May counties sent just two rowers combined. Two rowers.

In an area that boasts crews from Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Township, Absegami, Oakcrest, Holy Spirit, St. Augustine Prep, OLMA, Cedar Creek, Mainland Regional and Ocean City high schools, we managed to send just two oarsmen.

To put this in perspective, consider San Miguel Academy in Newburgh, N.Y. The school’s executive director, Mark Connell, described the city as the most violent, drug-ridden city in the state of New York. And yet the school, which has a student body of only 60 children, was able to enroll 40 in its rowing program.

Connell brought four oarsmen to the regatta, despite the considerable challenges they face.

Out of nine high schools in our area, which has a total of 18 boy’s and girl’s programs, only two young men were sent along with their coach, Mike Giegerich.

There was a time when varsity

eights from Holy Spirit and Atlantic City High were a formidable force, traveling to Henley, England, and winning, or at least giving their competition the night sweats.

We are fortunate in our area to have a plethora of beautiful rowing venues: a river, a lake, the Intracoastal Waterway and the back bays. We have coaches who are willing to face the harsh elements of February and the unpredictable weather of spring, giving up their weekends for less pay per hour than they could make at Amazon.

So what is it? Do we need to discard the old blueprint of high schools competing separately for Nationals?

Do we need to form an organization of all the high schools, combining all the rowers under one flag and sending the best boats to the event? Is winning as a result of these measures more desirable than giving more students an opportunity for such an experience? Does not winning diminish what the rowers stand to gain by participating?

The USRowing Youth Nationals is an opportunity for our rowers to expand their horizons; to meet competitors from around the country and test their mettle in the crucible that is the 2,000-meter race.

Let’s figure this out. The San Miguel Academy certainly has.

How to Make Homemade, Delicious Ice Cream Without the Hassle and patience for mediocre results. Hundreds of ice cream makers are on the market, with some being plastic balls you roll around your kitchen and others being high-tech electric churners. How can we make heart-stoppingly-good ice cream without the stress?

There are several ways to make homemade ice cream without the hassle, but it’s important to keep in mind

few years ago, I went camping with some friends to celebrate my roommate’s recent engagement. It was a hot summer night, so we decided that after hiking, we would make some ice cream.

Ashley, my roommate, pulled out heavy cream, sugar and vanilla extract from a giant cooler and poured the ingredients into a giant wooden bucket with a crank on the top. We took turns turning and turning the crank, slowly adding ice cubes into the bucket. When the creamy liquid wouldn’t harden, we added some salt. And cranked and cranked and cranked. The liquid wasn’t turning into a solid.

It took over two hours until we finally had soft-serve ice cream. Our arms were sore and sweaty, and the ice cream wasn’t even that decadent. I couldn’t help but think that we could have just picked up popsicles from the general store in half the time it took to make our own dessert.

Homemade ice cream has been a challenge for millions of people around the world. It takes lots of strength

some ice cream basics. Quality ice cream is made of heavy cream and sugar and varying flavor ingredients, like strawberries, mint, chocolate or coffee. I always prefer my ice cream to include crunchy additives like pretzels, almonds, cookie dough or brownie bites. You can also add swirls of fudge, peanut butter, caramel or cinnamon sugar. The combinations are endless!

Here are some flavor ideas that will wow your tasting audience: cinnamon bun swirl, very berry (strawberry, blueberry, raspberry), pinneapple coconut rum, peppermint mocha (coffee, chocolate and mint), peanut butter cookie dough, hazelnut chai latte, red velevet cookies and cream, apple butter pecan, caramel pretzel, and rosemar y lemonade.

M a ke s u re that all of your ingredients are evenly mixed so that every bite can be balanced. Use an electric stand mixer to whip heavy cream, sugar and a pinch of salt on high until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Add your main flavor, like vanilla bean paste and mix it in the cream. With a wooden spoon, slowly include cruncy add-ons or swirls of sugary sauces.

Pour the mixture into a freezer-safe container (I prefer to use an aluminum loaf pan). Cover and freeze for at least 24 hours. When the ice cream has set, use a scooper to spoon scoops into bowls, or blend to make a milkshake. Your ice cream will be thick and flavorful and delicious.

Store ice cream in an airtight container and keep in the freezer for up to two weeks. Remember that every time you refreeze the ice cream, the dessert develops “freezer burn” and develops a metallic taste. The ice cream, if frozen for too long, will become hard like an ice cube and lose some of its rich flavor. Enjoy ice cream at barbeques, by the pool, during a family movie night, or how I enjoyed mine all those years ago, camping with your girlfriends on a hot summer night.

Ocean City Club Fundraises for Scholarships

T

he Colony Club of Ocean City held their annual fashion show luncheon fundraiser at Greate Bay Country Club on Sunday, June 12th.

Over 140 women attended and thoroughly enjoyed the fabulous fashions provided by Ta Dah of Ocean City. Ta Dah had a pop-up boutique. Twenty businesses in the area provided gift certificates and baskets to auction off. Plus, the talented Colony Club members created 30 additional baskets to be auctioned off. Seven local businesses graciously sponsored the

event. And everyone enjoyed taking a chance on the 50/50, which was a success. All the money contributes to the Colony Club’s scholarship fund. This scholarship fund supports graduating women from Ocean City High School to continue their education, enabling them to reach their career goals. With the generous gift certificates, baskets, and sponsorships we were able to reach our goal for our scholarship fund. Everyone had a marvelous time and have said they look forward to a repeat next year.

Combat Rising Food Costs This Summer Moms Vibe:

he kids are out of school and parents everywhere are dreading the summer grocery bill. Summer, in general, usually means more food needed in the house, more snacks, and rapidly growing children who never stop eating. This year the burden is extra heavy as the price of food has increased exponentially with the rate of inflation. While we wait for the pendulum to swing the opposite way, here are a few ideas to help combat the rising cost of food as we head into summer.

Planning is key During times of rising food costs, it’s more important than ever to plan ahead. Create a plan for the week that involves multiple uses for the same item such as chicken, beans, rice, and pasta.

For example, buying a whole chicken rather than just the breast is a cheaper alternative and provides protein for multiple meals. Planning ahead with the intention to repurpose leftovers is a great way to get more bang for your buck. Begin with what you already have in your pantry then build meals for the week off of those items.

Shop off-brand Now is the time to start considering those off-brand items that you might

otherwise pass by. Many store-brand products are significantly cheaper than the traditional big-name brand but offer nearly the same flavor and ingredients.

This is especially true for dry goods such as cereals, beans, rice, etc. Decide which grocery list items you’re willing to be flexible with and which ones you aren’t, then give a few new products a try. You may be pleasantly surprised and save a few dollars in the process.

Shop local markets Farmers’ markets are the perfect way to save money while also keeping your dollars in the local community.

aybe your parents refused to let you put elbows on the table.

Maybe you always say thank you after someone holds the door for you. Maybe you always send a gift when a friend gets married or has a baby. Manners are the unspoken rules of our society, and we follow them to communicate to others that we are considerate of our neighbors. Without manners we would be eating with our hands, passing gas at networking events, and covering the earth with garbage. Manners also apply to the beach. As the temperature heats up, and you head to the beach, consider these golden rules: Keep a reasonable distance from other parties Most people, when they come to the beach, want to spot with a view of the ocean and are close to a lifeguard.

Try to practice COVID-19 social distancing rules and maintain a six feet distance between your group and other parties. Be mindful of others, especially if you have a lot of items or people in your group. Consider a play area for your children and laying out to tan (make sure you have enough room). The beach is first-come, firstserve, so the people who arrive first on the beach have more rights than those who arrive later. If you end up

arguing over a spot, the first beachgoer has seniority.

Practice ocean safety Always swim between the green flags and in front of a lifeguard.

Understand the risks involved with swimming in the ocean, such as rip currents, and be knowledgeable about how to get out of a strong outgoing riptide. Some spots have higher levels of rip currents such as near jetties. Keep in mind everyone

in your party’s swimming abilities and think about how each one can swim safely, whether that’s staying close to the shore or using floatation devices. Always follow the lifeguard’s instructions.

Play music and speak at a low volume.

Because of close quarters, expect to be overheard by other groups nearby. Play music through headphones, but if you would like to share music, play it at a low volume, as many people want to enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing. If you make a

Watch your children and direct them away from others There’s a fine line between letting your kids have fun and provoking other beach goers. Make sure that your children stay within the bounds of your set-up and never kick or throw sand (it could get in someone’s eyes).

If the little ones dig a hole, fill it in when you leave so that walkers don’t sprain an ankle. Keep their toys nearby. and remember the beach should be fun for everyone.

Respect wildlife Seagulls can be really annoying, but they are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so never enact revenge on these animals if they steal your pizza. If you find a crab, do not capture it or stomp on it. Observe the creature from a distance and if it wanders away, don’t chase it. Stay vigilant of jellyfish (they may sting) and any other animal. Ultimately, be kind to critters that share the beach with you.

Remove all trash Litter and human waste destroys the ocean and beach habitats. When

you pack up and head home, leave the beach the way you found it, which includes disposing of garbage, food containers, plastic bags and drink cups. Thousands come to our beaches because of their beauty, and no one wants to see litter. Also it can be hazardous to sea life.

Be considerate to other people and wildlife.

Don’t do anything gross If you think someone might gawk at another because they are doing something unsavory, do not mimic their behavior. Pick a wedgie or a booger in privacy. Get a room if you can’t keep your hands off your lover.

It’s rude to make other beach goers uncomfortable and potentially ruin their experience.

Most of these recommendations are logical and fairly easy to practice.

Common sense is less common than ever lately, so try to think through every action you take, whether it's passive or active, so you can treat your neighbor with courtesy. We are so lucky to enjoy the beach easily, so try to keep the peace, and if someone is being really rude, don't be afraid to reach out to local police officers, often found patrolling the boardwalk.

Together we can make the beach an even more magical place.

Calling It Macaroni

hen my children were little, they often sang the well-known American patriotic song and nursery rhyme, Yankee Doodle. You know, the one where Yankee Doodle rides to town on a pony, puts a feather in his cap and calls it macaroni.

Wait, he put macaroni on his hat?

Why would he do that? The truth is he never put the pasta shape macaroni on his hat. So, why macaroni in the song?

According to historians, macaroni in Yankee Doodle does not refer to the pasta used in the cheesy pasta dish that almost everyone, especially kids, loves. Instead, it refers to an elaborate short-lived fashion trend in England at the end of the 18th century. It started when wealthy, upper-class young men returned from their Grand Tours of mainland Europe with a love for the luxurious fabrics

of the French and the exotic pasta dishes of the Italians.

So to be “macaroni” was to be sophisticated, upper class and worldly.

The song Yankee Doodle (doodle was another term for simpleton) was actually used to mock the rough and unsophisticated men fighting in the American Revolution. To the British, Yankee Doodle was a poor American solder who was trying to be sophisticated like them by putting a feather in his cap.

The Americans weren’t a bit insulted by the song, and starting singing it as a patriotic song. And we all know how the American Revolution turned out. Oh, and by the way, the word dude is derived from doodle.

But back to macaroni. Macaroni is actually from the Italian term maccheroni, a short, straight, usually ribbed, tubelike pasta which is larger than the smooth and curly macaroni you find at your supermarket. If you looked for American macaroni in Italy you would look for pipette pasta.

American macaroni and cheese doesn’t exist in Italy. Instead maccheroni can be combined with layers of tomato sauce, meatballs, Italian cheeses, sometimes hard-cooked eggs and baked, as in Maccheroni al

2 pounds ripe tomatoes ● 6 to 8 eggplants ● Olive oil ● 2 garlic cloves, crushed ● Salt and pepper ● 4 cups macaroni ● ¾ cup grated pecorino cheese ● 3 to 4 sprigs basil, finely chopped Peel and chop the tomatoes; reserve the juice but discard the seeds. Set aside.

Peel the eggplants and slice them lengthwise into fairly thin slices. Fry them, a few at a time, in plenty of hot oil until well-browned and drain on paper towels. Keep warm.

Pour off most of the oil in the pan, leaving only about a cupful and sauté the garlic cloves until brown.

Discard them; then add the tomatoes and stir well. Pour tomato juice over the tomatoes. Sprinkle with salt ●

Some researchers believe that macaroni and cheese was inspired

by Italian dishes made with penne and various grated Italian cheeses. A famous Italian food historian found a recipe in a 13th century Italian cookbook calling for sheets of pasta squares boiled in water and tossed with grated cheese, probably Parmesan.

Historians have often credited Thomas Jefferson with popularizing macaroni and cheese in America since he served the dish (perfected by his Black chef James Hemmings) at many presidential dinners. But it actually was James’ brother Peter who served a “pie called macaroni” at a White House dinner hosted by Jefferson.

and pepper and cook quickly for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, bring a large pan of salted water to a boil and cook the macaroni until tender and firm. Drain and mix with half the tomato sauce.

Brush a deep earthenware baking dish with oil. Cover the bottom with a layer of macaroni, followed by one of the eggplants and sprinkle generously with grated pecorino and a little basil. Continue in this manner until all the ingredients are used up, finishing with a layer of eggplants, which should completely cover the top. Spread with the rest of the tomato sauce and sprinkle with cheese and a little olive oil.

Bake in a hot oven (450F) for 15 minutes to allow the ingredients to absorb the mixed flavors and to become very hot. Serve immediately.

Beach going made easier

h how I love the beach!

The feeling of the sand between my toes, the gorgeous sunsets, the salty waves on hot summer days.

It can be the best place on this earth, but the beach also can be a little tricky to maneuver and you do have to make advance preparations before you go.

If you have kids, this can increase what you really need to bring to the beach ten fold. While my

kids are a little older, I will never forget the overwhelming feeling of getting ready to have a peaceful time at the beach… it was actually downright difficult.

Today I want to share some of my favorite beach tips. I promise they will make your trip to the beach a little easier and leave you with more time for fun!

1. Protect your precious phone from sand and water (especially the sand)by putting it in a ziplock bag. You can still use it through the plastic.

2. Bring baby powder to the beach because it takes off sand faster than anything else.

3. Put your money in an empty chapstick or marker container.

4. Sunscreen is the most important part of your beach day. Know when to apply, what time you’re most likely to get burned, etc.

5. Make your own ice pack that won’t melt all over everything with a sponge in a plastic bag.

6.Keep sand away from you by using a fitted sheet.

7. Have a toddler? Grab a mini plastic baby pool to allow babies and toddlers to stay safe during water play.

The mini hard plastic pools can also be used to carry beach items. Of you can find an inflatable pool for under $10 that can easy slide into your beach bag.

Tomatoes and Basil – Soulmates in the Garden and Kitchen Let It Grow

hen it comes to summer in the garden, my mind instantly goes to all the delicious foods you can make with tomatoes and basil.

Both of these plants are fair-weather friends that cannot handle cold temperatures, but relish the heat of summer. Plant them in fertile, well-drained soil, water regularly, and you will be rewarded with tasty results. Tomatoes and basil are like high school sweethearts that were always meant to be together. Plant them close to each other in the garden since they are known as a perfect match when practicing companion planting.

My go-to summer lunch harkens back to my childhood and brings out my inner farm girl with tomato sandwiches. Back in those days, a tomato on Wonder Bread with mayo did the trick. But today, thoughts of toasted wheat bread, garden tomatoes and basil, mayonnaise, freshly ground pepper with sea salt and a splash of balsamic vinegar make my mouth water.

Another quick summer lunch makes use of all the stale, leftover Italian bread that seems to accumulate on my counter. Panzanella is a Tuscan bread and vegetable salad, once

referred to as the “poor man’s dinner”, but when I eat it, I feel quite rich and blessed. Though you can look up the traditional recipe, my take uses roughly torn crusty, Italian bread mixed with tomatoes, basil, and oregano, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil, a little red wine vinegar and balsamic vinegar, then seasoned with freshly ground pepper and salt.

Of course, no list of tomato -basil recipes would be complete without a caprese salad which layers tomatoes and basil with mozzarella cheese.

Spotted lanternflies staying out of Cape May County, so far

ew Jersey is being invaded and residents have been called upon to fight back.

On June 9, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture launched a campaign urging the public to do its part to slow the spread of the spotted lanternfly. Residents are being urged to “stomp out” the insidious creatures by killing them on sight before they do more damage to trees and crops.

The state has created badbug. nj.gov to educate the public on what’s at stake, what to do and how they can report them. The site teaches what the bugs look like, where to look for them and how to contain the sap-sucking bugs.

The spotted lanternfly, a native of

Asia, does its damage by sucking the sap out of plants and trees, depriving their hosts of the main product of photosynthesis. Take too much sap away and plants may starve.

While spotted lanternflies or SLF have a favorite food called the tree of heaven, another non-native species from Asia, it can suck the sap of about 70 other plant species.

“Quarantine compliance will reduce the spread of SLF to new areas and counties, thereby protecting New Jersey resources including forests and agriculture,” according to NJDA. The only county where established spotted lanternfly populations have not been detected is Cape May County.

“Cape May has no established populations that I know of,” said George C. Hamilton, Ph.D., director of the graduate program in entomology at Rutgers University. “Right now, hitchhikers are the only ones being found.

“That may change this year,” Hamilton told Shore Local News. “They are established in Atlantic County.”

Olson has seen the bugs in action on the Stockton’s Galloway campus, and he doesn’t like what he sees.

“The SLF has been “spotted” on Stockton University’s main campus. I help oversee the campus arboretum and SLF has been detected on some of our living collections,” he said. “I’m very concerned. The sustainability farm is next to the arboretum and farm managers are concerned, too.”

So what do they look like?

After hatching in May, SLF are in the nymph stage. They start very small at about a few millimeters to a quarter inch as black with white dots. They stay in this general appearance into July when they turn red with white dots and are about a half inch long.

At full maturity in mid-late August, they have wings, gray with black dots and they're in the egg-laying stage.

It’s also when they’re most harmful.

“They do the most damage as adults,” Hamilton said. “They will begin appearing at the end of July and will be around until cold weather sets in in October or November.”

Egg masses are about one inch long. They can be found on anything left outside. Most are on trees about 10 feet above the ground.

Fresh egg masses have a gray, mud-like coating. Older ones have a cracked, tan coating. Residents are urged to destroy them when discovered.

While the adults have wings and can fly, they walk more than fly. Their wings are closed most of the time.

Since it made its first United States appearance in Berks County, Pa., in 2014, scientists have been tracking the advance of the native Asian insect. China, India and India are its customary stomping grounds.

In 2018 the SLF was first seen in New Jersey and has continued to spread, reaching Connecticut, Delaware, Indiana , Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.

ou say you want sugar? Why does this happen? Stress is often the reason for the magnetic forces we feel toward sugary treats. Our bodies respond to stress by secreting hormones that are related to food cravings. The hormone ghrelin , which controls our appetite, is released when we are stressed.

Sugar cravings are normal. They can also be explained by simple side effects from certain foods we eat. A bad diet without balance and structure is the culprit most of the time. Some sugar cravings are a result of an underlying nutrient deficiency.

Deficiencies may be in certain minerals such as zinc, chromium, iron, calcium and magnesium. Magnesium deficiency

seems quite common so it’s particularly important to pay attention to this.

A small desert can be part of a healthy diet. The key is to select a lower sugar dessert treat and control portions.

Be alerted to the added sugars as they are the real problem when reaching for something sweet .

3) if you don’t have a piping bag, place the mixture in a sandwich bag and snip off any tiny corner .

Directions: Preheat the oven to 275°. Line three baking sheets with parchment paper.

Wash out the mixing bowl and beaters with vinegar to ensure there is no grease on them. Place the egg whites in a clean bowl, beat at high speed until stiff. This process will take 8 minutes. Add cream of tartar and continue to beat. Slowly add the Truvia. Remove the beaters and fold the cocoa powder using a rubber spatula.

Using a piping bag fitted with the star tip, pipe circles on to the lined trays. Pipe one8-inch circle then outline the outer top of the circle to create a basket effect.

Bake in the middle and lower section of the oven for one hour. Turn off the oven and do not open the door. Allow the meringues to sit in the warmed oven for an additional hour. Remove from the oven and cool. Store in an airtight container.

New coffee house owner trades banking for brewing

hen you open the door at Barista’s, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee overwhelms your senses. The colors are muted and warm. You can hear the sounds of people typing on laptops, steam stemming from milk wands on the espresso machine and muted

voices ordering lattes.

Friends, hunched over caramel macchiatos and bagels, gather at tables, catching up on the kids, work and summer plans.

Leila Karlsen circles the shop with a big smile on her face, asking patrons if they are enjoying their refreshments and if she can take a plate away after someone finishes an egg sandwich. Her presence is welcoming and kind. She puts customers at ease.

New Owner Leila Karlsen sips a latte outside Barista’s Coffee Shop Karlsen, 40, who has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Drexel University and an MBA from Rutgers, became the owner of Barista’s in December of 2021. She has always enjoyed the Central Square coffee shop, so when she heard that the previous owners were retiring, she took a big leap and left her 20-year career in banking to run it.

Before that, the married mother of two daughters worked and lived around Voorhees before moving to Egg Harbor Township a few years

ago. Her husband, Joe, 49, works as a financial advisor with LPL Financial, located a few steps away from Barista’s.

“I wanted to do something different and more rewarding,” said Karlsen. “I wanted to connect with people and make an impact in the community.”

When the place was finally her own, Karlsen decided to keep most of the menu and atmosphere the same. She kept the same staff and the “coffeehouse feel.”

“My favorite part of this new adventure is connecting with customers,” said Karlsen. “I love making people smile and supporting this fantastic community.”

What’s happening to Atlantic County’s Mainland motels?

don’t know if you have noticed, but a trend with the motels on the Mainland of Atlantic County has been slowly occurring. With labor costs and general overhead increasing substantially, coupled with lower annualized occupancy, property owners are finding alternative uses.

Leading the way with innovative ideas is Dr. Ira Trocki.

Approximately seven years ago he conceived of the idea to transform the beautiful 213-room Sheraton Hotel, located at 6821 Black Horse Pike in Egg Harbor Township, into a gorgeous apartment building.

It features spacious one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The focalpoint of the building is the incredible interior atrium area. It offers a design that encourages social interaction along with all of the common amenities. The building is currently owned by Renewable Jersey at Egg Harbor, LLC.

Located next to the Atrium, at 6817 E. Black Horse Pike, is another former motel which has been transformed into a more attractive use.

It is currently being converted into affordable senior living.

The new name is New Standard Living. This 100-plus-room facility is ideally located within walking distance of Wal-mart and the Garden State Parkway. It also offers easy access to the entire region with convenient public transportation.

Dr. Trocki did not stop with the Atrium. He owns the property three doors down at 6813 Black Horse Pike, which was formerly the 197-room Holiday Inn Express. Once again with the change in the market, he did not just close the doors. He saw a void in the market and decided to convert it into Plaza on the Pike.

The ultimate end game is to create a state-of-the-art, three-story Mediplex. You talk about location, location, location, this property should prove to be a winner with its new medical use. Congrats to Dr. Trocki for coming up with such an innovative use.

et me get this out of the way first, I’m not a plumber.

I’ve never pretended to be.

In fact, if the truth be told, I’ve taken on several pipe changing, drain cleaning tasks in the past and they haven't turned out well. Either the project which should have taken ten minutes ended up taking a couple of hours or in frustration I gave up and called a professional. Having said that, recently I attempted to change out a shower head. I’m sure you can guess already where this is headed. First of all, I thought it would only take a few minutes. In the process of removing the old corroded pipe, it snapped right at the wall with a threaded pipe still broken off in the wall. I tried not to

panic, took a quick trip to the hardware store to pick up parts I needed and ask for advice. I returned home and tried the advice but it didn’t work. Finally, in frustration I called a plumber and got voicemail. I thought maybe I could find a solution on YouTube and much to my delight, I did. I found that the problem could be solved easily with one tool. I didn’t have that tool. So off I went back to the hardware store where I found the $13.00 tool and it worked; problem solved in a matter of a minute.

At this point you might be thinking, “That’s great Jeff. I’m glad to hear you worked through your problem. But what’s your point?” My point is that as I reflected later on what had happened it reminded me that too many times when circumstances or challenges come up that we have trouble dealing with, it’s not so much the problem that is the problem, it’s that we aren’t using the right tools to address the problem or circumstance or challenge. As a business trainer and coach I see all too often a company or organization run into a roadblock and not know where to turn. At first it appears that there is a major obstacle that can’t be overcome, but that’s not always the case. There is a saying that can be applied in the case of my plumbing issue and really just about any other issue you or I run into in life. It’s this, “You don’t know what you don’t know.” In the case of my issue with the shower head, I knew where there was a problem but what I didn’t know is there is a simple tool to fix that problem. What I thought was a complicated and impossible situation turned out to be an easy fix with the right tool in hand.

This is why I’m so passionate about personal growth along with leadership and communication development. I set out everyday to learn something new.

So that when I lay my head down at night, I’m better off for having lived that day. What are you doing to grow each day; personally, professionally and spiritually? Take some time to think about it, make a plan and execute it one day at a time. It won’t be long before you see a compound effect on your efforts.

Cara’s Love announces first scholarship winners Winners from Oakcrest, Cedar Creek

ara’s Love, a charity founded by the Bluth, Surace, and Schaffer families following the passing of Cara Surace Bluth, an Atlantic County educator who passed after contracting Covid-19 in February 2021 at the age of 45, has selected the first recipients of the scholarship fund created in her memory.

Hannah E. Derringer and Josiah Casanova, both seniors at Oakcrest High School, and Sarah Flanagan, a senior at Cedar Creek High School, were each selected for the $2,000 scholarships.

“We saw parallels among Hannah, Josiah, and Sarah and Cara’s journey as a student and an educator,” said Joetta Surace, Cara’s mother. “It was really meaningful for us to support them in their college aspirations.

We love that Cara’s legacy will be to help other creative, enthusiastic, and joyful people find their way to the classroom.”

Derringer intends to study early childhood education/family science

and human development at Montclair State University. Her goal is to be a preschool or kindergarten teacher in a New Jersey public school. The child of educators who worked in Hamilton Twp. Public Schools, where Cara served as a vice-principal, she shared many of the same interests as Cara, including community service and working with the school’s media club.

Casanova will study mathematics at Florida Memorial University and hopes to eventually earn a master’s degree as well as a Ph.D. He would like to become a teacher to motivate other students and inspire them to be great. Like Cara, he is very motivated to help children and to make schools a welcoming, positive place where they can explore their interests and learn.

Flanagan plans to study secondary special education and biology at The College of New Jersey with a goal of becoming a high school environmental science teacher. Flanagan was inspired to pursue a career in education thanks to her mother, a special education math teacher at Hess

Cara grew up in Port Republic, cheering in Galloway Twp. for the Mustangs, before attending Absegami High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from George Washington University and worked in Washington, DC for ten years before returning home to pursue a teaching career.

While teaching first grade in Atlantic City, she earned a master’s degree in Educational Administration from Stockton University. In 2017, she was named an NJ Governor’s Teacher of the Year winner at Chelsea Heights Elementary School in Atlantic City.

Cara was working as a vice-principal at Hess Elementary School in Hamilton Twp., a job she loved, at the time of her passing. She was a long-time resident of Ventnor and loved spending time on the beach just blocks from her house.

Egg Harbor Township High School pre-apprenticeship students are first class

acklyn Carugno, the Egg Harbor Township High School 12thgrade principal, called them “pioneers.”

“I could not be prouder of our students taking a hands-on approach to career preparation,” Carugno told students in the schoo’s first-ever class of pre-apprenticeship students.

“They will never lose these skills, which will take them so, so far.”

Carugno was referring to more than 30 seniors who participated in EHTHS’s inaugural pre-apprenticeship program. They gathered June 16 at the high school for a ceremony to recognize their achievement.

ot long after last week’s column was published, the Flyers announced they had hired John Tortorella to be their next head coach. He’s coached four different teams over 20 NHL seasons, including Tampa Bay to a Stanley Cup in 2004, but will he be the fix the Flyers need? Also, I wrote about Tri-Cape baseball last week, and wait until you read about how they did in the Carpenter Cup for high school baseball.

Since I last wrote, the Flyer's coaching change was their big news.

Meanwhile, Tampa Bay gets on the board against the Avalanche in the Stanley Cup Finals. The Warriors win another NBA Championship.

Throughout his career, Tortorella has made waves for his many successes, including winning the 2004 Stanley Cup with the Lightning, as well as his many controversial moments with players, fans, and media. He is passionate, tough, brutally honest, and hardworking, and expects his players to be as well, which would seem to suit Philly’s

blue-collar mentality. Having worked in high-pressure markets like New York and Vancouver, he also has shown he can handle the media and a demanding fan base.

And then there’s his stats & resume. With 673 career wins and a Stanley Cup ring, Tortorella brings a track record of success and clear identity to a franchise that has had neither in some time. But will he fit on more than the surface level? After the Flyers limped to a 25-46-11 record in 2021-22, the second-worst in franchise history, Tortorella most definitely has a gargantuan task on his hands.

What Stopped Lightyear from going to Infinity and Beyond?

elcome officially to summer! I always like to begin with box office content and as you’ll see from the headline, Pixar’s Lightyear has been released, but apparently, this version of Buzz Lightyear doesn’t hold the same appeal.

According to Variety, “Lightyear” only made a so-so $51 million in its opening weekend at the box office.

For industry analysts, those lackluster ticket sales were confounding because Pixar had been box office royalty, and “Lightyear,” a spinoff of the cosmically successful “Toy Story” franchise, landed decent — though

That’s easy to say, but in reality, there’s so much good entertainment content on right now, including something on what I call “regular TV”, with a streaming aspect to it. FX’s “The Old Man” debuted on June 16th. Let me start by saying that I first was attracted to FX programming with “The Americans” from 2013 to 2018. I also devoured the first three seasons of FX’s “Fargo”, although I admit I never watched season four with Chris Rock in the lead role.

Regarding “The Old Man”, it’s based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Thomas Perry. It stars Jeff Bridges (back from Covid) in the starring role and the great John Lithgow is on equal footing with Bridges in this one.

Here’s the premise from Wikipedia: “Dan Chase (Bridges) is a former CIA operative who has been living off the grid for thirty years. After killing an assassin, Chase is forced into hiding. While in hiding, Chase rents a room from Zoe McDonald (Amy Brenneman), with whom he is forced to partner while on Sir Nick Faldo - retiring from his TV work on August 7th the run. FBI Assistant entertained by the animated otherworldly adventure, in which Chris Evans takes over from Tim Allen as the voice of Buzz Lightyear.

So, what prevented it from rocketing into the stratosphere? Well, maybe it’s just one spin-off too many.

Maybe the plot isn’t as sharp. I haven’t seen it yet, but do plan to at the Tilton Square Theater.

Of course, I still haven’t seen “Downton Abbey: A New Era” and “Jurassic World Dominion”. Plus, don’t forget “Minions: The Rise of Gru” comes out July 1st. Um, I think I need to stop writing and head to the movies!

howboat Atlantic City reached another major construction milestone for its latest and most anticipated family entertainment venue the “Island waterpark.”

Shore Locals Cameras were on hand at 4:30 am as the first of 70 trucks arrived on site and crews began to pour 700 yards of concrete for the main pump room, which will house the waterpark pumps for the slides.

The 103,000-squarefoot year-round indoor waterpark will feature water slides, pools and a lazy river, along with food & beverage and retail outlets, lounge areas and party rooms.

A retractable glass-pane roof will cover the entire project to make it a year-

round destination. Island waterpark will be the largest beachfront indoor waterpark in the world. It is being constructed on the New Jersey Avenue beach block lot next to Showboat.

The massive Island waterpark is slated to open in the summer of 2023. Groundbreaking for the project took place on January 12, 2022.

Philadelphia developer Bart Blatstein is doubling down on non-casino attractions by adding this entirely new concept of family-friendly entertainment to complement the Showboat’s massive 120,000 square feet “Lucky Snake” Arcade and Sports Bar, which opened June 2021, and the new indoor Raceway at Lucky Snake, which opened Memorial Day Weekend this year.

he South Jersey Cultural Alliance has been blessing the South Jersey arts community for years. The SJCA sponsors regular art zoom meetings, has made membership accessible to the larger arts community, and brings artists together via the Internet and networking platforms.

Now the SJCA is in the midst of one of its most exciting and important tasks.

Since May of 2022, the SJCA has been accepting applications from artists negatively affected by COVID and lockdowns.

In July, SJCA will announce the recipients of the South Jersey Artist and History Professional COVID Relief Grant. Each award winner will receive $1,000. The quickest way to

SL-April Harley, thanks for your time. Please take a moment to tell us what SJCA is.

AH: Hi Raymond! Thank you for inviting me today to be the voice behind sharing the SJCA story. SJCA, officially known as the South Jersey Cultural Alliance, is an arts and culture support organization that has been around for almost 30 years. Our mission is to connect arts, history, and cultural organizations, artists and tradition bearers to each other, their communities, and the resources they need to flourish across the eight southern New Jersey counties.

Founded by a small group of cultural leaders collectively advocating for increased cultural funding in South Jersey, SJCA grew to include many non-profit arts and history organizations in its membership.

SJCA became a go-to resource for connecting with colleagues in the field, professional development, and resource development.

Over the past few years, the goal soon became to expand its reach and represent the full spectrum of arts and culture in South Jersey.

There is a diverse, dynamic, and multifaceted community here and we want to help keep our artists, organizations, tradition bearers, and

others working in the field connected, informed, and well supported.

SL: Please take a moment to discuss your role.

AH: I recently joined the SJCA team to further develop and execute the new initiatives that the organization has been committed to implementing.

Simply put, my role at SJCA is to connect with and build the network of artists, art educators, historians and culture by engaging with fellow members, community activists, non-profit sectors and larger organizations.

Through informal convenings to shared learning experiences and discussion forums, I will help bridge gaps and keep our community connected.

I will be designing programming that will reflect the needs and interests expressed by the community.

With a background in the arts, community organization and event curation, I am blessed to find a circle of like-minded individuals that I believe in, with whom to take this journey.

SL-With so many arts related organizations in South Jersey, one can’t join them all and still have energy to create. What kinds of artists are ideal for SJCA? AH: I think the beauty of the current goals of the organization are to expand and redefine what or who artists are, and have the potential to be.

Outside of the traditional amazing painters and musicians, we support all art forms, from dance, theater,

media/film, art and other various mediums and encourage them to explore the plethora of outlets that we as a non-profit organization bring together.

Why should an artist be excited about SJCA? Artists, art educators, history gurus, makers, artisans and more should be excited to become part of the South Jersey movement.

We are thriving at a time when funding opportunities are increasing, diversity of art is emerging as well as the diversity of the voices behind the movement.

Most importantly, as a member or supporter, you have the chance to build this platform with us and help to cultivate culture and communities by sharing your story, all while benefiting and being rewarded for living your life’s purpose as a creator.

Members get to utilize our platform to promote their events and other updates and can seek assistance and get questions answered related to anything in their field of interest. Once you use the simple program of updating your basic information on what we call the SJCAMP software, you are immediately added to our database, placing you on the map for all to see. Not to mention the professional development classes, exclusive events and who can deny free giveaways and discounts to all things related to the arts?

The connections alone and accessibility to members that match your pursuits make being a member of the SJCA community well worth it.

SL-I don’t know any artists that were NOT affected by COVID from losing spaces, performances, to having art shows canceled, to painfully losing family. Please tell us about The South Jersey Artist and History Professional COVID Relief Grant.

AH: The world has been significantly impacted by the pandemic as a whole and we all know that artists contribute immensely when it comes to healing the world during and after drastic times.

Many suffered losses but it was also a time of intense creation. Many artists were able to create more then ever as a way to heal themselves and others. This grant opportunity, generously provided by the New Jersey Arts and Culture Renewal Fund, is an opportunity for artists throughout the entire state of New Jersey.

As mentioned before, SJCA will be awarding 50 artists and history professionals with $1,000.00 each in July of 2022. We encourage everyone to apply as June 26 is the official deadline.

AH: Great question. We definitely worked hard to make the application process as easy as possible.

Frequently asked questions about the Jersey Shore (Part 3)

ack by popular demand, this series offers answers to some frequently asked questions about our favorite place, the South Jersey coast. At your next trivia night or social gathering, show off your new knowledge and impress your friends. So, here it is, part 3 of the answers you’ve been looking for: Is Boardwalk Empire real?

The short answer is yes. Atlantic City has a long history of mob rule, particularly around the Prohibition Era almost 100 years ago. Nucky Johnson, AC’s crooked treasurer and speakeasy owner, is buried along Zion Road in Egg Harbor Township.

Chicago gangster Al Capone owed much of his success to turn-of-thecentury Atlantic City, and is portrayed as a little guy compared to big sharks like Johnny Torrio. The HBO series is based on the book “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City.” It may be a shocking read!

How did Atlantic County get its name?

This seems like a simple question and answer, but the story may strike you. Here’s as it is written by the City of Northfield: When the new county was created out of old Gloucester, there was great speculation as to what it would be called. Late one winter afternoon Dr. Jonathan Pitney of Absecon was calling on his friend, Judge Daniel Baker of Bakersville, who is Miss Price's great-grandfather.

As the doctor was leaving he turned to Mr. Baker and said “Judge, what name shall we give to the new county?" The Judge stood for a moment,

looked over towards the ocean, waved his hand and said "Doctor, there it is, the wide broad Atlantic Ocean. What name more appropriate than Atlantic County?"

Why is Ocean City a dry town?

Previously in this series, we discussed the Christain roots of the popular shore town. Well, this evangelical background meets the present day through the no-alcohol policies enforced by the city government.

Basically you can consume alcohol on the island, but you won’t be able to purchase any adult beverages at any restaurant or store. For a non-sober good time, head over the Ninth Street Bridge and check out Charlie’s Bar

for the best beer and wings in the county.

How long is the Atlantic City Boardwalk?

The AC Boardwalk is the longest boardwalk in the world, stretching over five miles. The boardwalk used to be longer but the Margate and Longport sections were destroyed in tropical storms and hurricanes.

The Ocean City boardwalk is only 2.5 miles and the Long Beach Island boardwalk is less than a mile, making Atlantic City’s boardwalk look quite lengthy.

What sealife lives below the surface of our oceans?

All kinds of creatures swim beneath the water’s surface. You’ll find dolphins, octopi, jellyfish, blue crabs, hermit crabs, horseshoe crabs, shrimp, and in the colder months, seals and whales. A thousand-pound great white shark was spotted off the coast of Sea Isle City this month, but don’t worry, shark attacks are extremely rare around here.

The Science Behind Wine Tasting

or the next stop on our journey through the main structural components of wine, we’re discussing tannin. Tannins are a type of molecule present in a wide variety of plants, including food items like berries, nuts, and chocolate, and beverages like coffee, tea, and – you guessed it – wine. Tannins are astringent and bitter, and they create a dry sensation on the palate. Consider the way your mouth feels after drinking a strong cup of black tea, or an underripe piece of fruit.

That’s tannin in action!

A quick note on grapes and winemaking: All grape juice (regardless of the color of the fruit on the outside) starts out clear. Red wine gets its lovely hue from extended contact with the skins and seeds of the grapes during a part of the winemaking process known as maceration. Since grape tannins are primarily located in the berry’s skin and seeds, red wines will typically have a much higher level of tannins than white wines. An exception to this could be a white wine that has seen extensive oak aging, as the wine can absorb the naturally occurring tannin from the wooden barrel.

Some grapes are higher in tannins than others. Nebbiolo is arguably one of the most tannic grapes in the world, and it is the star of Piedmont, Italy, where it is used to produce the renowned wines from Barolo and Barbaresco. Cabernet Sauvignon is another grape known for its tannin, as is Monastrell (planted widely in Spain and France, where it’s called Mourvèdre). On the other hand, grapes like Pinot Noir, Grenache, and Barbera have much lower levels of tannin, and a smoother, lighter mouthfeel.

While tannic wines can sometimes seem harsh or bitter on their own, they shine when paired with food.

Tannin molecules bind with proteins and fats, and this has a softening effect on the palate. There’s a great (and scientific) reason that steak and

In addition to contributing structure and flavor, tannin molecules offer stability to wine, and help it to age well for extended periods of time. In fact, many wine experts recommend cellaring high-tannic reds for several years before opening, to give the tannins time to soften and integrate.

To experience tannin for yourself, I recommend tasting a low-tannin and high-tannin red wine side-byside. Consider an Italian Barbera (I love Truffle Hunter Barbera d’Asti) alongside a Nebbiolo (Oddero Langhe Nebbiolo is an excellent choice) and take your time mindfully sampling each one. What do you feel on your

palate, and what do you taste? Does one seem lighter or heavier than the other? In which do you detect more astringency and dryness? To take it a step beyond tannin, and to apply some of what we learned last week, consider how much acidity you detect. Remember, acidity will often hit the mid-palate and the insides of your cheeks, and make you salivate. Next, taste both wines with a hard Italian cheese like Pecorino Romano or Parmigiano Reggiano, and see how your impression of each wine develops and changes.

ummer is officially here, which means more time to be outside, enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. If you’re looking for some fun activities for family and friends while creating lasting memories, try some of these recommendations.

Kite flying is a traditional pastime that spans generations. They come in many different sizes and designs from the traditional diamond shape to dolphins, butterflies, dragons, and birds. All you need is a nice, breezy day and your kite will sail into the sky. Be sure to watch for objects like trees and bushes, and make sure to have enough room to move around. Costs start around $8 including string.

There is nothing like a friendly game

of corn hole to make anyone’s day. Each team is given a set of beanbags with the objective to toss onto a tilted rectangular board. Points are awarded for keeping their beanbags on the playing surface, and three points for shooting it into the hole. Boards come in regulation size and modified versions, like the three-hole washer. This game costs start at $15 for a child’s set, and up to several hundred dollars for regulation size boards.

This unique game is fun to play, and it comes in different sizes, so you can take the game anywhere, from the lawn to the pool. Kanjam costs $20 for the junior model and up to $40 for the regular size and is recommended for anyone ages 12 and over.

Brigantine Farmers Market

he Brigantine Farmers Market was in full swing under fair skies on Saturday, June 18th. You can find the market at the Brigantine Community School (Sheridan Place) and there is plenty of street parking in the surrounding area.

There were many local farms selling fresh fruits and vegetables including Peplowski Fruit, Brookberry Blueberries, The Potato Homestead, Peddler Farms Produce, Montelone, Mento and

Nectar Flow Farms.

Visitors could find an amazing assortment of foods from traditional baked goods and designer mushrooms, to specialty teas, exotic cheeses and fresh seafood. The market also includes many crafts and hand made goods, as well as, local artists and service providers. Don’t forget to bring your reusable bags.

The Brigantine Farmers Market will be open Saturdays from 8am to Noon and continues until September 3rd, rain or shine.

Along for the Ride as an Operator

ennsylvanians and New Yorkers line the beach and boardwalk, marking the beginning of summer. Seagulls cackle, the sun shines, and sand sticks to the wet bare feet of locals and tourists alike.

As a local from Egg Harbor Township, I spent most summers in high school working as a ride operator on the Ocean City boardwalk.

The poignant smell of freshly-fried funnel cake and a child’s laughter whip me back in time. Donning a polo and khakis, I’m ready to start my shift.

High schoolers, pimpled, hairy, and tan, wait impatiently for their workday to begin.

Everyone is assigned a ride to supervise for the next six hours. “One word determines the fate your entire day,” my twin sister Holly whispers to me as we approach our manager. He broods over the flock of teenagers dangling the destiny of our day by his fingertips.

“You two will be breakers today,” he mumbles under his breath. After three years of working at the pier with my twin sister, the manager still can’t tell us apart.

We huff a sigh of relief. Breakers mean that we aren’t assigned one ride all day, but instead bounce ride to ride, giving the other operators a lunch break.

Once all the teens are assigned a ride and the park opens, the breakers gather to pick and choose which pieces of machinery they want to work for 30 minutes. “Top of flume?” asks Mr. Manager. It’s suddenly an auction and top-of-flume is the prized pig.

Fighting, bargaining, and then begging are quick to follow.

“Kiddie Boats?” Mr. Manager asks. Dead Silence. These seasoned employees know that Kiddie Boats means soaking wet crying toddlers, parents complaining and older siblings who are too big to take a trip down memory lane. Kiddie Boats doubles as the main attraction of the park and the horror of the employees.

Holly chirps up. She loves kids and has worked that ride for years. Surely this half hour helping children couldn’t be that painful. I review my list of mediocre rides to visit and start my day on the Frog Hopper ride.

When I push through the flimsy iron gate, there are five kids flying on frog-shaped pods. The employee assigned to that ride relaxes when she sees me, and hustles to wrangle the kids so she can take her break.

In less than a minute I’m alone - the safety of these shoobies rests in my hands.

Operating a ride is monotonous. I stand in front of what seems like a car engine front the 1950s with chipped green paint and a mess of wires sticking out the side. I check to see if the seatbelts are buckled, press the big red button, and wait for the day to end. The frogs leap in circles and toddlers squeal. Moms take pictures and gush over their brave boys and girls.

Dads man the stroller. Grandma holds the cotton candy and kettle corn.

The mechanics finally arrive and free the other children. The families get free ride passes and I wash my hands. Just like that, the ride operator is back from her break and moving on to the next ride.

I make my rounds on the rest of the rides. I sit and spin inside the Graviton Spaceship, dance with a 10-year-old girl on the Music Express, and yell “choo choo” on the monorail train ride. With a motor oil stain on my khakis and sweat on my brow, I finish my work day and meet my sister.

The sun is setting, the lifeguards pull their rowboats to the dunes, and tidal salty-air smells poignant. Untucking our shirts, Holly and I reenact our days. We find ourselves throwing our hands, snorting with laughter, and head up to the boardwalk for smoothies and gyros for dinner. The perfect end to an imperfect day.

Almost ten years later, I am working full time for my family newspaper as a college grad with a degree in public relations. I spend almost everyday nestled in a coffee shop editing stories and creating social media content. My life is so different now, but every now and then, I think about those long days at working the rides on the boardwalk. It was a rite of passage so many teens go through, and even though it was crazy and quirky, we learned customer service and responsibility. Thank you, Ocean City, for your important role in my career and life, then and now.

Deep in a trance, I’m awakened by a mother’s scream. The ride has ended, but the frog pods are still six feet off the ground. Toddlers look confused and parents crinkle their eyebrows. There’s no button to call the mechanic.

I look over at Holly working the kiddie boat ride across the park. She is soaking wet, mascara running, carrying a sobbing three-year-old off the ride. “Happy Birthday” plays over the loudspeaker in the distance.

I focus back on my own ride and try to get creative. Standing on my tiptoes, I reach as high as I can. “Unbuckle your seatbelt, sweetie!” I coo.

“Let’s go see Mommy.”

“I have to go potty,” the boy answers. I stretch my arms out, but he hesitates. His mother is threatening to call the paramedics. I gently grab his hand and he falls.

My heart is racing when I catch him. The boy giggles as I set his feet on the ground because he knows my hands are now covered in urine.

Core exercises improve your balance and stability Shore Fit

C

ore exercises train the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen to work in harmony. This leads to better balance and stability, whether on the playing field or in daily activities. In fact, most sports and other physical activities depend on stable core muscles.

Core strength is so important for every stage of life and particularly important with seniors. An older adult runs the risk of falling, so strengthening that core and keeping that balance in check is imperative.

I incorporate core strength with a strong emphasis on balance in a land-based class that I instruct called Smooth Weights. Core exercises can be done at home and don’t need any fancy equipment or even a gym membership. Here’s what you can do in your own home on a daily basis.

Any exercise that involves the use of your abdominal and back muscles in coordinated fashion counts as a core exercise. For example, using free weights in a manner that involves maintaining a stable trunk can train and strengthen several of your muscles, including your core muscles.

Most people do not realize that weighted squats train your core. It’s not all about sit-ups and crunches. In fact, it’s so much more than people

even realize. Your core is a band that wraps from front to back.

Of course, planks and sit-ups are great for stabilizing those core muscles, but there is more to it. You have to hit the front, side and back.

I highly recommend getting a stability ball. They are cheap and great for core exercises. Just sitting on one fires up those core stabilizers and helps with your posture.

A bridge is another core exercise that most assume is for the glutes (rear end). Lie on your back with your knees bent. Keep your back in a neutral position, not arched and not pressed into the floor. Avoid tilting your hips. Tighten your abdominal muscles.

Raise your hips off the floor until your hips are aligned with your knees and shoulders. Hold the position for as long as you can without breaking your form.

It’s a simple at-home exercise that I recommend starting with 15 seconds and increasing each round by 15 seconds, working all the way to a minute or longer.

Strong core muscles make it easier to do many activities, such as swing a golf club, get a glass from the top shelf and bending down to tie your shoes. Strong core muscles are also important for athletes such as runners, as weak core muscles can lead to more fatigue, less endurance and injuries. It’s so important for every facet of life.

Weak core muscles can also leave you susceptible to poor posture, lower back pain and muscle injuries.

People ask me all the time what I recommend for a bad or aching back.

What do I recommend each and every time? Strengthen your CORE! When the “core” muscles around your trunk are strong, they prevent chronic lower back pain and many other injuries. They keep you from losing your balance and falling down.

A stronger core will help to keep you upright, especially as you age and start to become more at risk of fall-

ing. Falling leads to injuries and older adults do not heal as they once did in their younger years.

Even smaller scale injuries can be detrimental.

To have a well-rounded fitness program, consider including core exercises in the mix as well. Whether you're a novice taking the first steps toward fitness, or a committed fitness fanatic hoping to optimize your results, a well-rounded fitness program is the best way to reach your fitness goals. It has to have balance.

Functional fitness is key.

hat does grilling mean to you? If it only means hot dogs and hamburgers, it’s time to expand your horizons. This time of year I rarely turn on my oven because I much prefer grilling. Even though my family doesn’t eat meat, we still grill plenty of delicious food. Here are some of my favorite things to cook on the grill.

FISH Have you ever tried fish cooked on a cedar plank? It’s a game changer that will transform how you grill fish. Cedar planks are sold in most supermarkets or can be purchased online. You need to soak them for a few hours in liquid. I like soaking mine in cider vinegar. Mix together a basic marinade or buy one. Marinate the fish for 1-2 hours before turning your grill to medium. Place the plank on the grill and add the fish on top of the plank. Close the lid and let the fish cook for 12-20 minutes, depending on how well done you like your fish. The fish will be moist and flavorful from the plank and marinade.

VEGETABLES Get creative with your vegetables!

Shop at your local famers market and look for vegetables that would be good on the grill. Some of my favorites to grill are zucchini, tomatoes, corn, mushrooms and cauliflower.

Brush the vegetables with some olive oil and sprinkle with your favorite seasoning. Vegetables cook quickly on the grill and are great as a main course or on the side.

FRUIT If you’ve never tried grilled peach-

es, get your grill ready when peaches are in season in July. They make for a perfect dessert. I also like grilled peaches with goat cheese in a salad or in quesadillas along with grilled corn. Other fruits that can be grilled are pineapple, bananas and figs.

CEDAR PLANK SALMON INGREDIENTS ● 2 cedar planks ● cider vinegar ● ⅓ cup vegetable oil ● 1.5 tablespoons rice vinegar ● 1 teaspoon sesame oil ● ⅓ cup soy sauce ● ¼ cup chopped green onions ● 1 tablespoon grated fresh ginger root ● 1 teaspoon minced garlic ● 4 salmon fillets, skin removed INSTRUCTIONS Soak planks in cider vinegar (or water or white wine) for at least 2 hours before grilling.

Prepare marinade by combining vegetable oil through garlic in a bowl and let fish marinate for an hour before grilling.

Preheat an outdoor grill to about 350. Put cedar planks on the grates.

Lay salmon on top of grates and lower grill lid. After about 15 minutes check fish for doneness by using a fork. You want it to be flaky but not overdone. Remove planks from grill and serve.

Golfing a round at Atlantis

ne of the best designed golf courses at the Jersey Shore is Atlantis Golf Course in Little Egg Harbor Township.

County owned and operated, the Ocean County Golf Course at Atlantis was once privately owned.

Opened by the great golf course architect, George Fazio, in 1962, Atlantis is an absolute legend in the Atlantic City region’s golfing community. At 60 years old, Atlantis remains the challenging and fun classic that it was when it was built at the height of the historic 1960s golfing boom in America.

Fazio, who was a U.S. Open runner-up to the great Ben Hogan at Merion in 1950, designed a course with dozens of interesting and memorable holes. Golfers of all levels and abilities are sure to enjoy it and want to come back to play it over and over again.

Galloway National Golf Club, Atlantis features strategic bunkering throughout its fairways and fronting putting surfaces on almost every green.

A quiet, and very traditional parkland golf course, Atlantis is a rare course that is both amateur and family friendly, where all experienced golfers and low handicappers will want to tee up.

The par 4 18th is another golf course highlight that’s not to be missed, and maybe the most challenging finishing hole in all of the South Jersey Shore.

ighting winds topping 20/25 MPH, 131 anglers tried their luck last Saturday in the 24th Brutus Fluke Tournament.

The determined fishermen got out early to beat the wind for a few hours then hugged the western banks all along Somers Point and Margate later in the day. Only 16 fish were weighed in (1.61 to 6.22 pounds), which was the weakest numbers in the 24 year history of the event. Our fishing caps are off for anyone determined enough to land a keeper.

The days before Greate Bay

G

reate Bay was built as Ocean City Golf Club in 1923 by the Lake family, Ocean City’s founders.

The Lakes envisioned a classic course on a picturesque parcel of land hugging the shore of Great Egg Harbor Bay. To make their vision a reality, they commissioned one of the most accomplished players and designers of the day, Willie Park, Jr. Park was a star professional who won the British Open in 1887 and 1889. He also authored an instruction book

before turning his attention to golf course design. Throughout an accomplished career, Park created courses that remain among the world’s finest – including Olympia Fields North in Illinois, site of the U.S. Open in 1997 and 2003 and the PGA Championship in 1925 and 1961.

The Sands Casino bought and renamed it in Sands Country Club in 1981. The course was later purchased by 76ers owner Pat Croce and other partners in 2004 and named Greate Bay.

Annual Farm Fresh Produce Vouchers Now Available For use at participating farm markets through November

T

he annual produce vouchers for low-income county residents 60 years and older are now available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

The vouchers, distributed by the Atlantic County Division of Intergenerational Services, allow recipients to purchase locally grown fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs at participating farm markets through November.

The state requires the county to target low-income senior citizens for participation. Individuals must reside in Atlantic County, be 60 years or older with an annual gross income that does not exceed $2,096/month or $25,142 annually for one person or $2,823/month or $33,874 annually for a married couple.

For the safety of participants, vouchers will again be distributed by mail this year. Interested residents may call the county’s information

and assistance hotline at 1-888-4269243 to request vouchers.

If all requirements are met, vouchers, guidelines and a list of participating farm markets will be mailed to the verified address.

Vouchers may only be used by the person to whom they were provided.

Lost or stolen vouchers cannot be replaced.

Eligible participants will receive five, $6 vouchers per person, for a total of $30. They may spend one voucher at a time, but will not receive change if they do not use the whole value of a voucher.

Due to variables such as weather, availability of produce and farm market hours of operation, residents are advised to use their vouchers before the end of October.
