Most recently, they both have experienced tremendous loss, with the passing of their firstborn sons. Still, they find the courage to carry on. The Flawed Categorization of Super Storms Weather By Dan Skeldon

n four short months, we’ll be coming up on the ten year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy. Well actually, to be meteorologically correct, I should say Extratropical Storm Sandy, or maybe just Sandy to simplify things altogether. After all, Sandy wasn’t “officially” a hurricane when it made landfall in South Jersey in October of 2012. It was a Category 1 hurricane until one hour before landfall, and then it lost its tropical characteristics, at least according to the National Hurricane Center. (I’ve always believed it was a hurricane at landfall, and that years from now, history will agree. But that’s a topic for another column and another day). Hurricanes are classified using the Saffir-Simpson scale, a method devised in the early 1970s that rates

hurricanes based on wind speed, but only wind speed. A Category 1 storm has winds from 74 to 95mph, followed by a Category 2 from 96 to 110mph, and a Category 3 from 111 to 129mph. For the record, a Category 3 is likely the strongest storm that could ever hit South Jersey, given how far north we are and the cooler water off of our coast. However, higher up the scale, there are Category 4 (130156mph) and Category 5 (157+mph) storms, and there has been a recent spike in landfalls of these stronger hurricanes over the last few years in the Southeastern United States. On the surface, the Saffir-Simpson scale serves a solid purpose in ranking the destructive power of a hurricane based on its peak winds. After all, winds are the most advertised feature of a hurricane, and higher winds cause widespread damage. But winds are not the only element of a hurricane capable of destruction. Water, both in the form of storm surges and heavy rainfall, can be just as or even more destructive than winds. And more people lose their lives from water than the wind when it comes to tropical systems. Tropical Storm Allison hit Texas in

2001, dropped over 40 inches of rain and killed dozens. And it was only a Tropical Storm. Water, not wind. Just last year, the remnants, or leftovers, of what was once Hurricane Ida zipped through Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York. And these mere remnants killed over 40 people, dropped 10+ inches of rain in a matter of hours, spawned powerful tornadoes, and caused 20 billion dollars in damage. Mostly water, not wind. Let’s circle back to Sandy, “only” a Category 1 storm, at least concerning its winds. In reality, though, it brought the storm surge more typical of a Category 3 or 4 hurricane to North Jersey and New York City. Water, not wind. What we need is an all-inclusive scale to rate tropical systems, one that takes into account the destructive power of wind, storm surge, and rainfall. And this scale shouldn’t only be used for hurricanes. Instead, it should place a ranking on any system, tropical depression, tropical storm, hurricane, and even the remnants of a former tropical system. And on a related note, a storm, like Ida for instance, should keep its name if it's going to remain destructive even

after it is no longer tropical. For better or worse, people tend to fixate on numbers. “Wow, it’s a Category 4 hurricane now!” “Oh, it’s weakened and now “only” a Category 1”, instead of fixating on the fact that it’s still a hurricane, if only with winds of 75 mph instead of 100 mph. Given this fixation, we should update our tropical system scale to numbers that truly capture the real impacts, from both wind and water, that any storm may deliver. Name a storm, and it gets some media attention. Once that storm becomes a hurricane, the media attention grows. The more powerful the storm, the more attention it draws into its vortex. But once that storm “weakens” or loses its tropical characteristics or name, the attention fades, often much too quickly. Hurricane forecasting has grown by leaps and bounds over the last few decades. But accurate forecasts aren’t worth as much if we don’t communicate the impacts of any approaching storm as clearly and effectively as possible. A new, modern scale would be a nice step forward. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

he Police Activities League of Egg Harbor Township and Atlantic County has officially cut the ribbon on its brand-new building complex. Buddy’s Adventure Zone, and the newly completed crossplex athletic arena, were unveiled during a ceremony on Saturday, June 11. Many local officials were in attendance to tour the 24,000 square foot building, which houses a large Astroturf field, media facilities, eSports room and observatory. The arena features an 80-foot by 180-foot Astroturf field, perfect for indoor sports such as field hockey, lacrosse and arena football. The field will also be utilized for volleyball, laser tag, batting cages and other grass-re-

lated sports. One of the most prominent displays on the wall of the athletic field is a large mural, depicting PAL’s mascots in superhero form. Each of the mascots were designed by Robert Ortiz, PAL’s Chairman of the Board. In the past, Ortiz has painted murals for the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City and is currently designing a community mural promoting community and law enforcement in Pleasantville. Michelle Riordan, PAL’s S.T.E.M. Coordinator and Solar System Ambassador with NASA, teaches celestial programs to young minds. Last year, she unveiled a half-mile long educational Solar System Planetary Walk on the Ventnor Boardwalk. “When I was thirteen, my dad gave me a camera, and my grandfather gave me his telescope; I’ve been hooked ever since.” Original plans for Buddy’s Adventure Zone came to fruition in 2012. During that time, the proposal was to build a 40,000-square-foot building. The indoor arena is one of two buildings that make up the crossplex. AC shell recycling program sets bigger target for 2022 By James FitzPatrick Contributing Writer

rganizers of the Atlantic City shell recycling program expect to show big progress in 2022: about 55 tons worth. That's how much additional shell will be planted in the Mullica River compared to the summer of 2021 as the state Department of Environmental Protection continues to grow its oyster reefs there. After offloading more than 70 tons of shells into the river in 2021, the DEP says it’s about to deposit 125 tons in the Mullica starting in midJune, just in time for the June-July spawning season. The goal is to nurture and grow one of the last remaining natural oyster reefs on New Jersey’s Atlantic coast by collecting and reusing discarded oyster and clam shells from Atlantic City restaurants. It involves some familiar establishments, including the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Doc’s Oyster House, the Knife and Fork Inn and Steve and Cookie’s By the Bay in Margate. Begun in 2019 and sidetracked by COVID in 2020, it’s run by the DEP’s Marine Resources Administration, with help

Weekly shell collections are made by MRA staff. Shells are then dried and cured for at least six months at the DEP’s Nacote Creek Marine Monitoring Station in Port Republic to rid them of pathogens that could be harmful to oysters (not humans) before being loaded by conveyor onto a barge. From there they are towed to the reef where they are “planted” in the river using a high-pressure hose. It’s a simple concept: adding shells helps grow new oysters.

When they are born, oyster larvae search for a hard surface or substrate to attach to and continue their growth journey. A shell, be it oyster or clam, that has already served its original purpose is the perfect surface for a baby oyster or “spat” to begin its new life. Shell recycling matches thousands of larvae in need of a shell with thousands of shells that would otherwise be discarded by restaurants. Instead of having to pay to get rid of them, restaurants separate the shells from the regular trash so they can be collected and put to good use. Scott Stueber, DEP fisheries biologist and coordinator of the program, explained it in a YouTube video promoting the Atlantic City shell recycling program. “Through picking up shell from one of New Jersey's most popular destinations for tourists and locals alike, there's a unique opportunity to engage with consumers and connect them to the local ecosystem and their role in environmental stewardship,” Stueber said. Oysters are called an ecosystem keystone species because their reefs serve as habitat for creatures that are important to other marine species including blue crab, summer flounder and striped bass, Stueber said. They're also important for maintaining water quality. It’s estimated that one adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water per day. The Mullica reef is significant because it has proven resilient to unfavorable conditions, including freshwater intrusion, disease outbreaks and coastal development. The plan is to sustain and develop the site, but not harvest it, a DEP spokesman said. The program had some problems when it began in 2019 related to equipment needs, shell storage and transportation. Things improved with the addition of automated equipment until it stopped in March 2020 due to COVID.

Although shell collection resumed in June 2020, shell planting didn't restart until the 2021 season when an estimated 55 tons of oyster and clam shells were added to the reefs, along with 15 tons of surf clam shells. Only part of what was collected in 2021 made it to the reef. Just over 66 tons of recycled oyster and clam shell from 2021 will be carried over for use in 2022. In addition to recycled shell, the MRA has obtained 59 tons of surf clam shells bringing the 2022 total to nearly 125 tons. Employees doing the collection work say they have received positive feedback. “It’s really cool to engage with the public,” said Les Frie, senior wildlife worker who appears in the DEP video while he makes his shell collection rounds. “We've had multiple people come up and just talk to us on the street asking us what we’re doing. As soon as we explain to them what this whole process is, where things are going to wind up, they just love it.”

Stockton continues to promote and support the program by providing student assistance where needed and providing data from their field activities. tainton’s, the tremendously successful concept located on Asbury Avenue, now has a presence on the Boardwalk at 12th Street. Stainton’s By the Sea provides a platform for entrepreneurs to offer their quality, unique merchandise in a synergistic retail forum. Too often small business retailers cannot afford prime retail space, but they can at Stainton’s. The new owners of Stainton’s, Raj and Yogi Khatiwala, were inspired by the concept of supporting small businesses. Bridget Buchanan, their director of operations and head of retail, gave the new owners confidence that the concept can also thrive on the Boardwalk. Her expertise and experience have

helped numerous businesses become more successful in the co-op shop. The store has exceeded their expectations thus far. They found and have converted the antiquated space into a modern, comfortable atmosphere for local businesses to display and sell their products. It is an opportunity for the public to know they are purchasing quality merchandise that cannot be found in the big box stores. It is a much-needed concept to diversify the Boardwalk as it offers the public something truly different rather than another food concept. Speaking of food, the Boardwalk has some newcomers. The corner of 11th and the Boardwalk, which used to be the home of Mia’s Christmas store, was a virtual reality arcade for two years. Unfortunately, that did not work out so the owners decided to go with a much safer investment, the combination of Cinnabon and Auntie Anne’s. The lines were long and the faces were happy when I was there. I think it will be a homerun. Traveling a little south on 11th and the Boardwalk is something different

Visitors are always looking for quality merchandise on the Boardwalk. Villanova’s Jay Wright to Join 2022 Night in Venice as Grand Marshal colorful costumes, themed entries and distinctive string bands that define the annual New Year’s Day parade and Ocean City’s Tuesday nights on the Boardwalk. A fireworks display will light up the bay and cap off the festivities on July 23. The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contest provide a chance to be part of the highlight of the summer season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the

bayfront, and thousands more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue. ecently retired Villanova University men’s basketball coach Jay Wright and his wife, Patty, will be grand marshals of the 2022 Night in Venice boat parade on July 23 in Ocean City, N.J. The Wrights will be joined by family members for the 67th anniversary of the festive summer event. Jay Wright stepped down as head coach this year after 21 seasons, 16 NCAA Tournament appearances, six Big East championships and two NCAA championships (2016 and 2018). A native of the region and summer resident of Ocean City, Wright is one of the most highly regarded coaches in NCAA history. He took the Wildcats to the NCAA Final Four

in his final season earlier this spring. Patty Wright is a Villanova graduate, former cheerleader and proud member of Nova Nation. She continues to be involved in charitable activities through the university. “It’s great to have two of our own leading Night in Venice this year,” Mayor Jay Gillian said. “Jay is a gentleman, a class act, and one of the best coaches in NCAA history. His legacy is a source of pride for everybody in the Philadelphia area and for all of us here in Ocean City. Made in the Shade Garden Let It Grow By Tammy Thornton

ormally, when one sets out to plan a new garden, they choose the sunniest spot in their yard and search for big beautiful flowers to fill it. But what do you do when the sun doesn’t shine on you—or your garden? Shady gardens can flourish as well, if you choose the right plants for the space. Observe different parts of your yard throughout the day. You may consider a space to be shady, only to realize it receives quite a bit of sun

in the morning or afternoon. Or, you may have planted bold flowers in your sunny garden, but they never really bloom again. When you study the sun patterns at various stages of the day, it’s possible you’ll discover that your flower spent less time sun-bathing than you thought. Get to know your garden before you buy flowers to fill it, and read plant labels as you shop. If a plant tag indicates that it needs “full-sun”, that means it requires at least six hours of direct sunlight to thrive. Chances are, at least a portion of your garden falls into the shade or part-shade category. Once you’ve done your sun-study homework, you’ll know what parts of the garden need plants that prefer shade or part-shade. That doesn’t mean you must be resigned to a boring and dreary space, devoid of flowers. Instead, it will open the door to a range of plants and flowers that would

Admired for its colorful foliage, coleus makes a perfect shade garden plant. never survive hours of harsh sun. A hanging basket of fuchsia will make a stunning statement with its colorful and exotic flowers. And as a bonus, it’s a hummingbird magnet. Fuschia should be placed in a part-shade location, since full-sun may cause it to stop flowering or wilt. Choose a spot with morning sun or dappled sun coming through the trees throughout the day for this tropical beauty. Bleeding heart (dicentra) is another plant that has strikingly unique flowers. This elegant plant with its arching stems will bloom in early spring and since it’s a perennial, will come back year after year, under the right conditions. My go-to flowers for a partly shady garden are impatiens. You can find flats of impatiens available in many

different colors to brighten a dark spot in the garden. They are annuals in our area, so you must wait until all threat of frost is gone in the spring. But once you get them in the ground, they will flourish and spread, filling a space beautifully. You can also add colorful flowers to your shade garden by using their cousins, New Guinea impatiens, which seem to have a more exotic look. Other colorful flowers that make good candidates for shade gardens are foxgloves, brunnera, tuberous begonia, and lobelia, to name a few. A great way to brighten a shady, dark space in your garden is to fill it with white flowers. When you are strolling through the garden on an evening walk, white flowers will seem to light your way along the path. Taller white flowers will appear to be suspended in air since the stems and leaves will disappear in the dark, giving your garden a mysterious look. Though white flowers will work best for this effect, yellow and light pink flowers will also show well in a dark corner of the garden. Using plants with variegated leaves is another way to brighten a dark space. Look for Solomon’s seal with variegated leaves. Its tall arching stems and white bell-flowers will

New Guinea impatiens add a pop of color to the shade garden quickly spread and fill a shady spot or woodland garden. For a fast-growing ground cover, plant variegated liriope, also known as lilyturf. Though I have different types of liriope in my garden, my favorite has yellow variegated leaves that are unique looking. Though it is mainly grown for its grasslike foliage, later in the season spikes of white or lavender colored flowers will shoot up and bloom, reminding you why you planted this aggressive grower. For a shade-loving ground cover with an amazing scent, choose lily of the valley. Its fragrance will pleasantly waft through your garden. When it comes to shade gardens, you can add a lot of interest by focusing on foliage. Hostas have so many varieties (including variegated types), that you could create an entire shade garden with hostas alone. They come in shades of yellow, chartreuse, white, and blue. There are mini hostas and gigantic ones, some having heartshaped leaves, others lance-shaped. Plant in groupings of the same types alongside those with contrasting fo-

liage. Later in the season, hostas will send up stems with tubular flowers that will attract hummingbirds. Another shade-plant valued for its foliage is heuchera, or coral bells. Heuchera has a seemingly limitless variety of plants with eye-catching foliage. From lime-green to deep purple or burgundy and everything in between, coral bells have tall thin stems topped with tiny bell flowers that will also attract hummingbirds. Of course, when using foliage-focused plants in the garden, you can’t overlook coleus. Though this plant is an annual, it’s worth adding to your shade garden each year. It can also be easily propagated from cuttings and brought indoors for the winter. Shades of hot pink, burgundy, lime-green, and yellow leaves compete with any flower when it comes to colorfulness. Coleus also develops its own flowers, but they are insignificant compared to the foliage. As you can see, shady gardens can be full of excitement with colorful foliage and flowers, or bring tranquility with calming green and white along pathways. I dream about a picture I saw of a woodland filled with ferns and bluebells. You can imagine a hush and sense of peacefulness that you would feel walking through that garden. After spending a hot day in the sun, entering the shade garden brings a much needed cool break from the heat as you reflect on your day. Be creative with foliage and add interest to a dark corner of the garden. You’ll soon find yourself craving to relax in a garden made in the shade.

The long-awaited “Mardi Gras AC” Weekly Summer Concert Series begins.

Recognizing the Power of our Words Moms Vibe: By Krystle J. Bailey

hen I was offered the chance to write this column, I knew that I wanted to use the platform to speak love, light, and life into the lives of women throughout South Jersey. If you’ve read a Moms’ Vibe, you know, sometimes it’s filled with tips, recipes, projects, or summer activities, and other times, it’s straight from my heart to yours. This is one of those heart-led columns. This one is for the women who struggle to see their worth, to love their bodies, and to see themselves as the goddesses that they truly are. As moms, we have this incredible opportunity to break generational cycles so that our children don’t have to face the same struggles we have. Growing up in the 80s, 90s, and 2000s, we were constantly bombarded with information that reinforced the idea that we weren’t good enough. Our hair was never shiny enough, our bodies never thin enough, our skin never clear enough, and so on. As we ventured into adulthood, many of us have struggled with feeling less than, from our bodies to our careers and everywhere in between. However, as detrimental as the internet has the potential to be in this

regard, it also carries so much healing power when we are reminded of our innate worth by influencers working to change the narrative. In a recent post by TikTok star Elyse Myers, she said something so powerful. She said, “I was made aware of the size of my body long before I was ever taught to love it.” She went on to tell the story of how a teacher in 7th grade made a comment about her body that has stuck with her in the decades that followed. In the video, she addressed the power of our words. We grew up being taught the little jingle, “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” Well, we all know that’s not true. Words do hurt. They carry more power than sticks or stones and leave much deeper wounds, especially as they relate to our bodies and our worth. Many of us in the thick of mothering right now have had similar life experiences when it comes to dieting and body image. Though it looks different on me than it might on you, most of us have dealt with feeling less than beautiful in our skin. Piggybacking on Elyse’s post, I wanted to pass along a simple message: It is never going to be okay to make unsolicited comments on another woman’s body, even if it is well-intentioned. While it feels natural to compliment someone on changes in their body, it’s important to remember that everyone’s path is different. How or why someone’s body has changed is personal to them. We must take into consideration why or how someone lost weight might not be because of dieting. We don’t know if

they’re sick, struggling with stress and anxiety, started a new medication, have an eating disorder, or are in recovery from an eating disorder. We never know how words might trigger someone or hinder their internal healing. Nobody would so freely comment about a woman gaining weight. We’d never make a comment on a post about how much weight they’ve gained or how big they’re getting, so why are we so quick to do it when someone is losing weight? Never taking into consideration that what is going on beneath the surface may be beyond what we can see. While it may feel like commenting on someone’s weight or body is out of love, and your intentions are pure, for many women, it only confirms their biggest fear - that you must be thin in this world to be beautiful, worthy, or celebrated. As a mom of a 12-year-old daughter, I am determined to be a part of the

change. We have the power to break this unhealthy behavior, and I’m calling on you to join me. The next time you feel the urge to make a comment about someone’s body, either in person or on social media, take a pause. Ask yourself how else you might be able to compliment them. Maybe they look at peace, or they’re glowing. Maybe they look happy, at ease, or powerful. There are countless ways to celebrate another woman without it having anything to do with her weight or body. We can create a brighter future for the next generation of women by doing the work now. Northfield, our own real town Mayberry Real Estate Matters By Elisa Jo Eagan

s this is the month of June and Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19, my thoughts drift to the time when my father introduced me and my family to living on the Mainland, and to more than 55 years of my life experiences and memories. My journey began on May 7, 1967, when my father, mother and I moved "off shore" from Margate to "the Mainland" into our beautiful new home on Henry Drive in the Birch Grove Park section of Northfield. Our family's Mainland roots and "house hunting” journey began when my grandparents lived in Linwood from 1954 to 1966. My father was in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, returning from his service to his parents' new Linwood home.

Upon his return, my father secured a position at what was then the Naval Air Station, working for Lockheed as an aircraft maintenance technician. In 1958 the air station became NAFEC, known today as the William J. Hughes Technical Center. My father, William Joseph Eagan, lll, was part of the original National Aviation Facilities Experimental Testing Center team as a federal government aircraft technician, working in research, development and implementing experimental modifications for the Department of Transportation, and later, the FAA. My father wanted to plant roots for himself, my mother, Grace, and I, and to be closer to his work. In the 1960s there was a building boom. During that time, various local builders were offering new construction homes to veterans and local working families. Prior to and during the 1960s, most of the areas surrounding Birch Grove Park were woods and trees, horseback riding trails and vast farmland - places of undeveloped nature, adventures and quiet enjoyment. When I look back on my childhood, growing up in Northfield, it was a magical place. My hometown was

Northfield honors all of those past, present and future who have lived, served and contributed to the betterment of the quality of life in the city. As we approach July 4, 2022, the 246th birthday of the United States, I thank my father for choosing to make Northfield our family home. My dad, now in Heaven, William Joseph Eagan lll, would have been celebrating his 92nd birthday on July 4 (July 4,1930-Dec. 17, 2006), the same birthday as mine. As I approach my own 60th birthday (July 4, 1962-). I am grateful that I was my father’s 32nd birthday present. My dad and I shared and celebrated every July 4 birthday together for years. We had many moments of festive fireworks, barbecues and most of all, love.

I treasure all of my hometown memories, and the house, home, neighborhood and community that made me. I love Northfield, and I love this area of Atlantic County where I live, work, and continue to give back and to serve. On this Father's Day, 2022, I honor my father, all of the fathers, grandfathers, and those men who have stepped up as father-figures by fine example. find a hidden road that opens up into a small horse farm. Deer leap between the pastures and amongst the tall grass while children confidently ride two mares. In the middle of the run stands Chris Kaelble, a teacher in every sense of the word. “Sit up straight,” she tells her students. “Keep trotting, then try a jump.” Twelve-year-old Olivia, a winning competitive rider in walk trot, sits proudly on Tinkerbell. Abby, 12; and Connor, her 10-year-old brother, stroke their horses before dismounting and independently leading their horses, Mia and Molly, toward the barn. “Great job guys,” Kaelble tells them. Kaelble, a resident of Egg Harbor Township, has always had a passion for horses. When she was a preteen, her parents sent her to sleep-away equestrian camp for two weeks. She was terribly homesick and begged her parents to pick her up. But the next summer, she asked to go back to the camp. That should have been the first sign, Kaelble said with a smile. Her family eventually bought her a horse of her own and she trained for local competitions. She attended Centenary University (formerly college) in Hackettstown for equine studies. After graduating, she started offering private lessons. When she had children, she decided to take a few years away from horses to focus on her family. Then, when her daughter turned 12 (around 2013), she found an opportunity to work with ARCH, otherwise known as the Atlantic Riding Center for Health.

ARCH was known for giving equine therapy to people with autism and other developmental disabilities, and Kaelble learned how to work with that population. Today she offers equine therapy to children and adults on the spectrum. She said she has witnessed students become more verbal, show a new interest in animals and improve behaviorally. In January 2022, Kaelble moved her eight horses to the Hidden View Farm in Egg Harbor City, where she co-leases the land with another woman who also owns eight horses and a couple of goats. During the day, you can find Kaelble at Pennsylvania Avenue School in Atlantic City, working as an instructional aide for preschoolers. Kaeble, who has a master's degree in education, said she loves spending time with children. Hope, Kaelble’s 21-year-old daughter, spends almost every day with the horses, and recently won grand champion in the pleasure division in a competition in Gloucester County. Like her mom, she graduated from Centenary University with a degree in equine studies, and after learning that some of the school horses were

Hope, 21, and Abby, 27, spend most days on the farm with Kaelble. Abby co-leases Tinkerbell, meaning that she splits care of the horse with Kaelble annually. This summer, Kaelble will offer an equestrian camp, teaching children of all ages how to groom and tack up a horse, spending time every day riding. At some point during the camp, Kaelble will take the kids on a field trip to larger horse farms, competition

centers, rodeos or equestrian stores. “Horses are incredibly calming,” said Kaelble. “They teach us how to care for another being and to respect them. We communicate with each other and form a unique bond. Inside each of their homes were beautiful, personal murals. “He also did all the water towers in the South Jersey area,” said Heston with a smile. Last year I left with hats, candles, jewelry and great t-shirts. The Black Excellence MarketPlace is a fantastic place to get Dad a wonderful gift for Father’s Day, something more exclusive and meaningful to the community than what you can pick up from the mall. No. 2 Malik Yoba Okay, so I wanted to interview Mr. Yoba, but our schedules couldn’t line up. The TV and film star will be a part of the Black Excellence Film Festival. For five seasons, Yoba starred as detective J.C Williams on the hit Fox drama, “New York UnderCover.” He is scheduled to do a meet and greet as well (full details at www.TheBEFestival.com). No. 1 We Want the Black Excellence Festival Last year when I heard that the Black Excellence Festival, Nathan Smalls and Brooklyn Media had chosen Atlantic City, I got excited and I have been excited ever since. Today events like the Black Excellence Festival are legacies in cities like New Orleans, which hosts the annual Essence Festival, and Philadelphia, which hosts the Flower Show, Car Show and Odunde Festival, to name a few. Events I mentioned in other cities have been going strong for 10 years or more. Today these events bring

people from around the world to enjoy one-of-a-kind experiences. The Black Excellence Festival will bring to Atlantic City’s Boardwalk self-empowerment seminars that cannot be duplicated anywhere. There will be praise festivals and Father’s Day celebrations. DJ Fah D will be curating the music for the first Historically Black College Day Party that I know of on the Boardwalk. This will be the second year that the Black Excellence Festival is hosting a comedy jam. There is a wealth of opportunities for personal reward, for organizations and businesses and for people that want to volunteer. I am supporting the Black Excellence Festival for so many reasons and one of them is very selfish. I want the Black Excellence Festival to stay in Atlantic City and I am excited to see it grow and become the premiere festival of the summer. What’s new to see and do to at the Cape May County Zoo

t doesn’t matter how often you visit or when, there’s always something new and interesting to see at the Cape May County

Zoo. “Every time I come to the zoo something is different,” said zoo visitor Christopher Scott, 21. “Either there is a baby animal, a different encounter with the animals, activities, or something new to explore.” The tradition has continued in 2022 as the zoo has announced several new arrivals to the family, plus a new restaurant. The first addition to the zoo this year was David Bowie, a 3-year-old female red panda. Bowie joined Luna in the red panda habitat, replacing Benjamin, who was moved to the Oklahoma City Zoo. On March 13, first-time mom Felana and dad Darwin gave birth to a ring-tailed lemur. It is the first ring-tailed lemur to be born at the zoo in 10 years. The new baby is only a few inches tall, and can be seen in the ring-tailed lemur habitat on the African Savanna Bridge at the zoo. On March 31, the Cape May County Zoo welcomed two cotton-top tamarin babies. Cordelia and Lil’ T joined older siblings Kida, Drizzt and Lira in the monkey habitat. The babies can be spotted being carried on their mom, or any of the other four monkeys in their habitat, as this species

On Feb. 2 a capybara named Budette gave birth to two capybara pups. The twins weighed about 4 pounds when they were born, and will eventually grow to over 100 pounds. Capybaras are the world’s largest rodent. This is Budette’s second litter of pups at the Cape May County Zoo. “We’re CAPY to announce that Budette and her new pups have joined the rest of the family in the yard,” read a post on the Cape May County Park/Zoo Facebook page announcing the new arrivals. Prior to the post on March 21, the newcomers were being kept inside their barn. After being introduced, the zoo began an online competition to name the pups. They received almost 200 name suggestions

The zookeepers chose their top three sets of names: Isabella and Luisa, Mocha and Latte, or Buttercup and Marigold. To make the final choice, the zoo asked for donations on its website to decide which set of names would be given to the twin capybaras. The name pair that received the most donations was chosen as their names. On June 1 the zoo announced on its Facebook page (@capemaycountyparkzoo) that Buttercup and Marigold were the winning names. The name game fundraiser raised $7,000 to help pay for the care of the baby capybaras. Marigold and Buttercup are often seen lounging on hay under the shade of a tree in their enclosure. In late February, the zoo introduced Leeloo, a 10-year-old common marmoset. Leeloo came from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine to be paired with Nico, the zoo’s 13-year-old male common marmoset. In the spring, two zebra foals joined the zoo's herd. First-time mom Lydia gave birth a foal on April 16. Gretta gave birth to another foal on May 7. Ziggy fathered both foals, which weighed 50 to 60 pounds at birth. So far, 2022 is turning out to be a productive year for the Cape May County Zoo. “The (zoo) is thriving and we couldn’t be more pleased to welcome two zebra foals to our zoo family,” said county Commissioner E. Marie Hayes, liaison to the zoo, in a press statement. The zoo’s newest attraction is the Safari Cafe. Initially expected to open on June 10, it opened early on June 1. The restaurant, a brown and tan building located near the bear habitat inside the zoo, provides indoor seating in the cool air conditioning for 50 guests. Metal tables on a concrete slab are outside for eating. Wooden picnic tables with red umbrellas outline the new restaurant allowing seating for 250 more visitors dining at the zoo. The new Safari Cafe replaces the old Safari Cafe, which was located in the courtyard outside of the zoo. The old Safari Cafe will soon be rebranded and reopened as Safari Express, which will feature a quick-service window, as opposed to the dining experience the Safari Cafe is offering. The new Safari Cafe menu includes

But to the person who dies at 60, not so much. Why such a depressing thought you might ask? I don’t mean to be depressing, only sobering. This past week I saw where the singer and songwriter Jim Seals of Seals and Crofts passed away at 80. I remember listening to the duo's music in my teen years and realizing that Jim Seals was 80 was a shock. I don’t know why but some aspects of my life seem to become frozen in time only to wake up one day and wonder where the years have gone. One of the duo's songs showed

I write a lot about dreams and goals and I’ve found it’s healthy to check in on our priorities and take inventory of how we are doing in life. I’m a firm believer in setting goals and dreaming about a preferred future, but not at the expense of missing out on today. I love the phrase “Carpe Diem” or "Seize The Day". It’s a reminder to make the most of every moment. Take in all life has to offer. Too often we fall into a trap of saying someday this or someday that and fail to live fully present in the moment we have before us. I felt with all the tragedy in Uvalde, a war in Ukraine and all of life's pressures around us it might be good to take some time on this June day in 2022. Pause in the middle of this whirlwind, in the midst of a hectic meeting, when

AC’s Nutty History

n 1930, the Planters company opened a peanut shop on the Boardwalk across from the Steel Pier. There were peanut roasters in the window and the aroma of freshly roasted peanuts spread out the door and all along the boardwalk. When you’d smell those roasting nuts coming out of the store, you just had to have a bag.

Outside there was a man dressed up in a peanut costume, who handed out samples of the roasted peanuts, waved to passersby, and greeted visitors to the Planter’s Peanut store.This was Mr. Peanut, who was a Boardwalk tourist attraction until the store closed its doors in 1978. Water exercise and its many health benefits Shore Fit By Bonnie Dodd-Miller

ne of my favorite exercise classes to teach is water aerobics. I’ve been teaching a shallow-end water class for over 11 years and it

is so much fun. I have met the most wonderful people whom I now call friends while teaching this particular class. This is largely due to it being a socially driven form of exercise for so many that need that aspect of exercise. It’s a great way to move your body for people with injuries and mobility issues. It’s also good for socializing and forming friendships. I decided to get certified in it because there was a need for instructors, and it would be a good balance to the spin classes that I was teaching

per week. Spin is grueling so to have a complimentary exercise is good for your body. I had no idea that I would love it as much as I do because I’m not a swimmer, but then I realized it has nothing to do with swimming and everything to do with fun. I call it the party in the pool. We laugh, we sing, we dance - all while burning calories. What’s even better is that it’s for all ages. Fans of traditional water aerobics classes already know that the resistance of the water ramps up the intensity of your workout, while providing a low-impact experience that cushions joints, builds core muscles and improves flexibility, stability and balance. And no, you don’t have to get your hair wet. That’s always a biggie. I highly recommend taking the plunge and trying this low-impact workout that builds muscle strength and boosts your endurance. It's fun, and it can be as challenging as you like. That is the key sentence right there. It can be as challenging as you make it. I tell my classes that all the time. With summer upon us and outdoor pools open, you should definitely make this an option if you have access to a pool. I teach it at the Aquatic and Fitness Center in Ocean City all year long, but I’m the summer months, I teach it at Whippoorwill Campground in Marmora. It starts June 16 and

runs all summer long every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m. The class is 60 minutes long and only costs $5. It’s open to the public so all you have to do is show up. An instructor will lead you through a series of moves, often set to music to keep you motivated. Each water aerobics class includes warm-up, cardio and strength-training exercises, and a cool down. I love using water weights with my participants. You can expect exercises like water walking, high knees, water jacks, skiers, bicep curls and leg lifts. You won't be swimming, but you’ll perform moves such as the breast stroke paired with jumping jacks and most water workouts are done in the shallow end of the pool. Like I mentioned earlier, you can do water aerobics in outdoor pools when the weather allows and if you have a pool, you can do a water aerobics workout at home. Even though being in the pool seems very relaxing, it is still giving your heart and muscles a great workout. Water exercise can even put you in a better frame of mind. It just feels so good and refreshing. It’s also great if you don’t like to sweat, but really want a good workout. There are classes for every fitness level. I keep it at a fast pace and very cardiovascular in nature, but not all classes are the same. You have to find what’s right for you.

A lot of people, including me, wear aqua sneakers that provide better traction in the pool. Exercising in water is great if you have arthritis or knee pain. I have so many in my classes that need knee replacements or have had them and the water helps them tremendously. You put less pressure on those aching joints, and are able to spend more time working out. It can help your joints move better and hurt less. It will also help you lose weight so you can be more joint-friendly on land. So, if you’re looking for a break from your usual fitness routine, why not dive into aquatic exercise? Exercising in water can provide a great full-body workout without some of

the drawbacks of land-based exercises, especially if you’re dealing with an injury. What could be more refreshing in the sticky summer months than being immersed in water while you’re burning calories? he story of every place is somewhat clouded in mystery, but no place is more intriguing than by the beach at South Jersey. There’s stories of shipwrecks and train crashes, pirates and rum runners, diving horses and Jersey devils in the Pinelands’ and giant elephants

overlooking the ocean. If you are lucky enough to visit or reside in this special setting, you are a part of the wild history of Atlantic and Cape May counties. I’m sure you have plenty of questions. Here are the answers you’ve been looking for (or didn’t know you needed) Part 2: Why can’t I bring my dog on the beach or Boardwalk in Ocean City? During the off-season (any time other than between May and Septem-

ber) you can bring your pup on the beaches, but they must be leashed at all times. Violators are subject to fines up to $500. However, dogs are not allowed on the Boardwalk ever. This is probably because some walkers may be allergic to dogs or afraid of dogs. And if a dog behaves poorly or injures someone, the city could be named in a lawsuit. If you want to bring your dog to the beach, visit Malibu Beach, better known as "Dog Beach," located at the foot of the Ocean City - Longport bridge. Also the North end of Brigantine allows dogs on a leash and Wildwood boasts a dog park on the beach, just steps off the boardwalk. What’s the deal with beach tags? Beach tags serve as an entrance fee to enjoy the beautiful beaches. They also pay for the cost of maintaining them and protecting them. In Ocean City, daily tags are $5, weekly tags are $10, and seasonal tags are $25. In Margate, beach badges are $20 for the season. The same fee applies in Ventnor. Longport charges $30 for the season, $10 for seniors. In Brigantine tags are $10 daily, $15 weekly and $25 seasonal. They’re free for seniors over 65 and veterans. If you’re looking for a cheap beach day, head to Atlantic City, Corson’s Inlet, North Wildwood, Wildwood, Wildwood Crest or Strathmere. They’re all free. What’s a nor’easter? A nor’easter is a coastal storm that affects New England and Mid-Atlantic states, equivalent to a typhoon in the Pacific islands. According to the

If you don’t, you risk having to pay a $100 fine. How many tourists come every year? Ocean City is the home to almost 12,000 year-round residents, swelling to nearly 150,000 in the summer. Atlantic City was visited by approximately 27 million tourists in 2021 according to statistics from the city.

Three Meal Ideas Under 300 Calories To Help You Feel Good and Stay Healthy

f you’re like me, summer means lots of road trips and fun activities. Maybe you’re spending days on the beach and eating lots of boardwalk pizza, or hitting up McDonald’s on the way to the zoo. Maybe you’re tubing down the river with friends and drinking lots of beer, or stopping by your aunt’s barbeque

and gobbling down some ribs and cake. According to the Mayo Clinic, the average person should consume between 1,500 to 2,000 calories per day. Personally, I’ve started tracking my caloric intake a few months ago and was shocked to realize that I have been eating considerably more than that. Like many Americans, I wondered how I could eat less calories so I can sleep better, have more

energy, clear up my skin and lose a few pounds. Each person is different and requires different food. Athletes generally eat more because they are expending more calories through their sport. Talk to your doctor about nutrition and diet so you can be aware of your individual needs and how you can meet them. When I spoke with my doctor, I was instructed to focus on protein and vegetables and limit

simple sugars. I’ve read a lot of cookbooks and scrolled through recipes online to find inspiration. Here are three of my favorite low calorie recipes that you may want to incorporate into your meal plan:

Taco Salad

Ingredients: 8 ounces of romaine lettuce, washed ● 1 large tomato, diced ● 1 red onion, diced ● 6 ounces of chicken breast ● ½ cup of feta cheese ● ¼ cup of cilantro ● 1 cup of corn, frozen ● 1 cup of black beans, canned ● 1 teaspoon of chili powder ● 1 teaspoon of salt ● 1` teaspoon of garlic powder ● 2 tablespoons of adobe paste ● ½ cup of lime juice, freshly squeezed ● ⅛ cup of olive oil Wash lettuce and cut into bitesized pieces. Place in a large bowl. Dice tomato and onion and pour into the bowl. In a skillet over medium heat, saute chicken in a teaspoon of olive oil and sprinkle salt on both sides. Cook until brown and crispy on each side, 7-10 minutes. In a small bowl, combine lime juice, remaining olive oil, adobe paste, garlic powder, chili powder and salt. Place to the side. Microwave corn for 4 minutes and toss into the large bowl. Drain and strain black beans and add to the large bowl. Once the chicken is cooked and cooled, cut into ½-inch cubes and toss into the salad. Add feta cheese and the dressing and mix thoroughly. Serve warm or cooled! ●

Bacon Frittata

Ingredients: 8 eggs ● 4 ounces of bacon, cooked and crumbled ● 1 large handful of spinach ● 4 cloves of garlic, crushed ● 1 package of frozen hash browns, room temperature ● ½ cup of cheddar, grated ● A sprinkle of salt ● A sprinkle of pepper ● ½ cup of milk In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, cheddar, crushed garlic, spinach, hash browns, bacon bits, salt, pepper and milk. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Pour the contents of the bowl into a ●

cast-iron skillet and top with remaining grated cheese. Bake until the eggs are firm, 40 minutes. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner!

Turkey Burgers with Sweet Potato Fries Ingredients: ● 1 pound of ground turkey ● ⅛ cup of parsley ● 2 eggs ● ½ cup of feta cheese ● 3 cloves of garlic, crushed ● Burger buns ● Lettuce ● 1 Tomato, sliced

2 ounces of ketchup 1 teaspoon of soy sauce ● 1 teaspoon of worcestershire sauce ● 1 teaspoon of mayonnaise ● 6 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into fries ● 3 tablespoons of olive oil ● Salt ● Pepper ● 1 tablespoon of garlic powder Combine ground turkey, crushed garlic, parsley, eggs and feta cheese in a medium mixing bowl. Use your hands to form burgers and place on a pan. ● ●

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and bake burgers for 15 minutes. In a small bowl, whisk together ketchup, worcestershire sauce, soy sauce and mayo. Place to the side. Prep sweet potato fries and pan-fry over medium heat in a large frying pan

until the fries get crispy, 10 minutes. Toast buns and add a spoonful of the special sauce onto the bottom bun. Add tomato and lettuce and top with the fully-cooked burger. Serve with sweet potato fries and special sauce for dipping. Enjoy!

In hockey, the Stanley Cup Finals are set to begin, and I was thrilled to talk hockey with a former player and current NHL coach for two full hours the other day.

What’s remarkable about that is that Steph Curry scored just 16 points and failed to hit a single three-point-

If you’re looking for my entertainment perspective, check out my other column, “That’s Entertainment.” So, without further ado, here are my extra points this week from the world of sports: Young Guns Shine in Phillies Hot Streak Let’s start with the Phillies, who won nine games in a row before getting blown out by Arizona last Sunday at Citizens Bank Park by the score of 13-1. The Phillies won one game with Joe Girardi before he got fired, and then eight in a row under interim manager Rob Thomson (there’s no P). Rob Thomson is only the third MLB manager since at least 1900 to win each of his first eight career games and he is only the second Phillies skipper to do so, joining Boston’s Joe M. Morgan who won his first 12 in 1988 and the Phillies’ Pat Moran who won his first eight in 1915. To me, it appears that the difference with the Phillies is that the

young guys are contributing. Bryson Stott hit a walk-off home run against the Angels. Alec Bohm seems more relaxed at the plate. Matt Vierling had a key stolen base in the Phillies’ most recent win as they beat the Marlins 3-2 at home. There was an article the other day that revealed the veteran players have taken to calling the youngsters “Phillies Day Care,” and the nickname appears to have stuck. There’s no denying that the younger players appear to be seeing more playing time under interim manager Rob Thomson, and they're making the most of it. The only problem with the Phillies hot streak is that it comes at the exact same time as a Braves hot streak. Atlanta has won 12 games in a row as the defending World Series Champions appear to have “righted the ship.” One piece of bad news for Atlanta though is that veteran second baseman Ozzie Albies fractured his left foot on a swing in a 9-5 win over the Nationals in Washington. Tampa Bay can become the first three-peat Cup champion since the New York Islanders won their third of four straight in 1982. Colorado is hoping to earn its third Cup in franchise history, and its first since 2001. While I think Tampa is extremely talented, I feel like the Av’s are going to win the Cup because they have the best player on both sides of the ice in Cale Makar. Everyone always points to Nathan McKinnon with Colorado, but I think Makar is unbelievable and capable of leading Colorado past Tampa. Now, that said, I think the best goalie on the ice will be Tampa’s Andrei Vasilevskiy. Plus, Tampa has a few former Flyers in Pierre Edouard-Bellemare and Brian Elliott that I’d love to see hoist the Cup. I’ll go with Avalanche in six for my prediction. Talking Hockey With the ‘Chief’ I was lucky enough to spend two hours on the radio the other day with former Flyers player and coach, and current St. Louis Blues Head Coach Craig Berube. The “Chief” has been friends with the host of the show “The Locker Room with Billy Schweim” for a long time, and was gracious enough to sit in with us for the entire two hours and talk hockey. He also had a lot of insights about the Eagles, Sixers and Phillies, too. And he says he’s not mad at Ron Hextall for dismissing him as Flyers coach back in 2015. I suppose if I had won a Stanley Cup elsewhere and just signed a three-year contract extension, I’d let bygones be bygones, too. It was great to spend two hours with “Chief” and his lovely partner Dominique. Thanks to Billy Schweim for getting him in-studio with us. One more hockey item and that’s

a huge hat tip to Al Morganti and Bill Clement, who have both long been associated with the Philadelphia Flyers and will both be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Morganti will receive the Elmer Ferguson Award as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, while Clement will receive the Foster Hewitt Award as voted by NHL Broadcasters Association. I’ve had the privilege to work with both men during my career and they are very deserving. Well done guys. Dramatic Finish for LPGA Classic On the local front, Canadian Brooke Henderson won the 2022 ShopRite LPGA Classic in dramatic fashion, needing a playoff hole to win it. Henderson began her day four shots off the lead, but fired a 7-under round of 64 to finish at 12-under for regulation. Lindsey Weaver-Wright also finished at 12-under-par, so they went to a playoff and teed it up on the par5 18th hole again. Her second time through, Henderson made an eagle three to win the tournament and the $262,500 check. It’s Henderson’s first win on the LPGA tour this year, and the 11th of her career. One year after finishing runner-up in the event, I’m sure Henderson will be a very popular winner with the folks who love the event. With that said, let me give another tip of the cap to Tim Erensen the managing partner of Outlyr, the company that puts on the ShopRite LPGA Classic, and Tournament Director Bill Hansen. Erensen especially revived the tournament bringing it back from the “dead” in 2010 and building it into one of the most beloved stops on the LPGA Tour. I am proud to be associated with the event each year, and after a playoff this year, can’t wait to see what next year brings.

Dinosaurs, Downton & Minions appears like summer movies are back in full force for the first time since the pandemic. Again, according to Variety, “Industry analysts are encouraged that the box office was able to accommodate two huge movies over the weekend, viewing it as a promising sign that moviegoing will continue to rebound over the summer.” For me, that’s a great thing to see. I am an unabashed fan of seeing a movie in the theater when possible. Not all movies, mind you, because there’s a reason the “straight to video” category was created back in the day! However, I plan to see “Jurassic World Dominion” in the theater. Just like I plan to see “Downton Abbey: A New Era” before it goes away. Plus, every time I see a TV commercial for “Minions: The Rise of Gru”, I think to myself that “I can’t wait to see that when it comes out on July 1st!” So, there’s three movies that I will absolutely see in a theater this summer. Durant & Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Those are the ones that I will watch. I also just learned that there is a tribute documentary to the late comedian Bob Saget that just dropped on Netflix. ‘Dirty Daddy: The Bob Saget Tribute’ is out now and I will definitely check that out. The all -s t ar tribute to Bob Saget took place at the end of January at The Comedy Store, with the audience there as a fund-raiser for the Scleroderma Research Foundation. The foundation’s home page still pays tribute to Saget, for good reason: The late comedian hosted and produced benefits in an attempt to research better therapies, and ultimately, a cure for scleroderma, which had killed his sister. He regularly attracted the biggest names in comedy and music to his cause. Now they were paying it back for him. The tribute, produced by Mike Binder (who’d known Saget since they both started performing at the Store fresh out of school) and hosted more or less by John Stamos and Jeff Ross, also included Chris Rock, Jim Carrey,

The Value of a Wine’s Acidity By Michael Bray

hat makes a wine remarkable? While the most important factor in selecting a wine is choosing a flavor profile you enjoy, there are several key qualities that allow wines to age and pair well with foods. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down the main structural components of wine. I hope to help you learn a bit more about your own palate and preferences, to challenge you to try new things, and to help you uncover why you like what you like. This will offer you a better understanding of your own tastes, and allow you to navigate a restaurant wine list and liquor store wine section with ease. Let’s start with acidity. While “acidic” isn’t always considered a positive descriptor of food and beverages, acidity is one of the most important factors when it comes to

the structure and ageability of wine. Acidity in wine originates in the soil. Soils rich in calcium carbonate, found in renowned regions like Champagne and Burgundy in France, don’t retain as much heat as other soil types, and this allows the grapes to ripen more slowly. When grapes mature at a steady pace, acidity and sugars are able to develop in balance with each other. In cooler growing regions (think Germany, northern Italy, and Marlborough, New Zealand), grapes naturally ripen as a slower pace, which also contributes more acidity to the fruit. The winemaker plays a role here too, of course. They determine how ripe (or not) they would like their grapes to be at the time of harvest. What does all this mean for the wine in your glass? Wines with a higher level of acidity can literally make you pucker (consider the effect of a glass of freshly-squeezed lemonade), and this sensation will typically hit you on the mid-palate and make you salivate. These wines are often described as crisp, light, refreshing, or “zippy.” While wines like New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and Spanish Albariño exhibit noticeable levels of acidity, you may be surprised to learn

that sweeter German Rieslings are high in acid, as well. The residual sugar levels in many Rieslings dulls the impression of acidity on our palates, but acidity remains as an important structural element in these delicious and age-worthy wines. (Stay tuned for an upcoming article highlighting the structural component of residual sugar.) Wines with prominent acidity pair well with foods with higher levels of fat and salt. A French Sauvignon Blanc like Karine Lauverjat Sancerre is the perfect partner for a creamy goat cheese, and a cool-climate Riesling like Ratzenberger Kabinett complements sushi and Thai food beautifully. As with anything else, balance is

key. Low acid wines can occur as weak and flabby, while overly acidic wines can taste harsh and sour. As you explore more wines and strive to taste mindfully, you will continually refine your palate and easily gauge acid levels. The next time you select a wine, I encourage you to try something new, and perhaps outside your comfort zone. Consider the various flavors you detect in your glass, and pay special attention to acidity. Note: While acidity tends to be more noticeable in white wines, red wines like Pinot Noir, Grenache, and Nebbiolo, have formidable acid levels, as well. lthough horseshoe crabs live most of their lives unseen deep underwater, these creatures emerge in droves during full and new moons on the shoreline for mating season. Hundreds of thousands of eggs are laid on New Jersey shorelines to ensure this long-lasting species’ existence for future generations.It’s no surprise that through millennia of survival horseshoe crabs have perfected their partnership with their mates. 1. Horseshoe Crabs are some of the longest living, making them the most experienced species on this planet. Often called “living fossils,” horseshoe crab ancestors can traced back through the geologic record to around 445 million years ago, 200 million years before dinosaurs existed. 2. Horseshoe Crabs have 10 eyes so they see everything. Despite their hard and tank-like exterior, horseshoe crabs are extremely sensitive creatures, at least towards stimuli like light. These marine arthropods have ten eyes — a pair of compound eyes on their front shell

t depends where you’re from. Folks from Philly and Boston call them Jimmies, everyone else calls them Sprinkles. Why do us locals call them Jimmies? A bit of research uncovered the Bethlehem PA company that claims it invented the topping back in the 1930s. Just Born, the company known for Peeps.
