Saturday evening, we attended the Ventnor City Beach Jam. The music vibrated across the beach as attendees popped up beach chairs, spectators lined the boardwalk, and hundreds of kids flocked to the adjacent playground. We grabbed dinner from one of the food trucks and delighted in the buzzing atmosphere. If a beach concert isn’t on your summer bucket list yet, it should be! I highly recommend Ventnor and Somers Point concerts. If you want to take your beach concert experience up a notch, read about the upcoming Wildwood Barefoot Country Music Festival on page 42. Ready or not, here comes another active Atlantic hurricane season…again Weather By Dan Skeldon
W
ith the arrival of June comes some familiar staples. Some we look forward to, like the longest days and latest sunsets of the year, the official arrival of summer, and more frequent 80-something-degree days. Others aren’t as highly anticipated, like stifling humidity, triple-digit heat indexes, and likely topping that list, the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. It’s here, it’s already underway, and it’s likely to be another busy season. It will likely be the seventh straight season with above-average activity in the Atlantic Ocean between June 1st and November 30th. Tropical Storm Alex kicked off the season during the first weekend of June, soaking parts of Cuba and South Florida with up to a foot of rain even before it was classified as a tropical storm. And all indications point to Alex being the first of many in a long parade of storms this season. First, let’s remind you what an “average” season in the Atlantic looks like. And remember that these “averages” have inched higher over recent decades due to more tropical activity, at least due in part to our changing climate.
An average Atlantic hurricane season now brings 14 named storms and 7 hurricanes, with 3 of those storms becoming major hurricanes with winds greater than 110 miles per hour. Most forecasts for this year predict between 14 and 21 storms in the Atlantic basin, which would be the seventh consecutive active and above-average year. 2014 was the last “quiet” year we’ve seen, with just 8 named storms that season. But that was an anomaly in an otherwise active stretch, as 2020 was the busiest season ever, and 2021 the third most active on record. Unlike other long-range forecasts, like seasonal forecasts for the winter or summer, the hurricane outlook has had a comparatively higher degree of accuracy and success. That’s especially true in forecasting the number of storms each season. Hurricane forecasts help raise awareness early in the season and get people thinking about preparedness well ahead of the peak of the season. But while there is great success in forecasting how many storms may develop, where those storms end up going, on the other hand, is much harder to predict. The Gulf of Mexico was the focus in 2021 in terms of the most activity, strongest storms, and most significant landfalls. However, Hurricane Ida, which made landfall in Louisiana, had major and devastating impacts in New Jersey, due to record-setting heavy rain and flooding from Ida’s remnants
in early September of last year. It’s a good reminder that it only takes just one storm to define a season and rewrite the history books. And that storm can be a hurricane, a slow-moving tropical storm, or even just the leftover remnants of a once much more powerful storm. So why is another active season forecast? Well, it’s another La Nina year, which helps create more favorable winds in the tropics for more development than usual. Plus, water in the Atlantic basin is warmer than average across a wide part of the Atlantic. Since hurricanes feed off warm water, it suggests more storms and stronger storms may develop once hurricane season gets cranking later this summer. Both the Gulf of Mexico -and- the East Coast should be on guard this year, with higher activity on both coasts, and Florida likely to be a focal point as it so often is. The Carolinas may also be at higher risk than normal.
Early season (June) and late-season (November) activity favor areas farther south, like the Gulf and the Caribbean. Back closer to home, it’s mid-August to early October that is the meat of our season in South Jersey, and the most likely time we’ll have to contend with the direct impacts from a tropical cyclone or the remnants of one that made landfall elsewhere. But we should never let our guard down throughout the entire six-month season, a cruel reminder that Sandy provided ten years ago late this October. The 2022 names for any tropical storms and hurricanes that form in the Atlantic are Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, Earl, Fiona, Gaston, Hermine, Ian, Julia, Karl, Lisa, Martin, Nicole, Owen, Paula, Richard, Shary, Tobias, Virginie, and Walter. As always, we’ll take it one week and one storm at a time. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

omers Point is not just the gateway to Ocean City. The city has redefined itself as a hot vacation area. In addition to the fine restaurants, bars, great shopping and marinas, there is the newly developed municipal marina, Waterfront Point. At last: the Jersey Shore answers you’ve been looking for (Part 1) By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

he story of every place is somewhat clouded in mystery, but no place is more intriguing than by the beach at South Jersey. There’s stories of shipwrecks and train crashes, pirates and rum runners, diving horses and Jersey devils in the Pinelands’ and giant elephants overlooking the ocean. If you are lucky enough to visit or reside in this special setting, you are a part of the wild history of Atlantic and Cape May counties. I’m sure you have plenty of questions. Here are the answers you’ve been looking for (or didn’t know you needed): How Did Cape May Get Its Name? In 1614, Captain Cornelius Jacobsen Mey sailed along the coast of New Jersey, settling south along the Delaware Bay. He liked the little peninsula (that would be Cape May County) so much that he decided to name it after himself.

Mey has a complicated history, working for the Dutch West India Company and exploring the Hudson River along NYC, and being a founder of the triangular slave trade. Did Mey Also Explore Mays Landing? No. George May founded Mays Landing, and his name is spelled correctly in the town name. The shipbuilder from the West Jersey Society surveyed the land around 1760, more than a century later than Captain Mey. In 1837, Atlantic County established Mays Landing as the county seat and built the historic courthouse.
Can You Drink Alcohol in Ocean City? Yes, but you can’t buy it on the island. Ocean City is a dry town, meaning that the sale of alcoholic beverages is banned. No restaurant can sell alcoholic beverages, no license will be given to liquor stores, and drinking on the beach will leave you with a hefty fine. Ocean City was

Therefore, you won’t find big hair and strong Brooklyn accents around here. Why Don’t Jersey Girls (or Others) Pump Their Own Gas? In the 1940s, a brave gas station owner from Collingswood offered self-service at the pump for a cheaper price. Thousands traveled from miles around to fill up there, which aggravated other gas station managers. They formed a union and lobbied the state Legislature, leading to a statewide ban on self-service gas. New Jersey is now the only state that requires gas attendants at the pump, and it's become a huge part of Jersey culture. Is the Tropicana Casino Named After Orange Juice? Sorry, citrus lovers. The Tropicana Casino and Hotel is run by Tropicana Entertainment LLC, which operates 11 casino resorts throughout the United States and Caribbean. Why Isn’t the Ocean Blue? You might feel a little sour that the Atlantic Ocean we see in New Jersey looks a little different from the crystal-clear waters in southern Florida. Well, our dark blue water is a good thing. Colder water found
in the Mid-Atlantic and New England is more nutrient-rich than warmer water. Our oceans are dense with plankton and algae, feeding tens of thousands of organisms and ecosystems. Plankton absorbs light, leading to darker waters by the shore. Our ocean is very healthy. Why is Egg Harbor Named After Eggs? Remember our old friend Cornelius Mey? The explorer is also responsible for the names Egg Harbor City and Egg Harbor Township and Little Egg Harbor. During the Dutch settlement
in 1614, Mey came across hundreds of seabird eggs along the inlet. He named it “Eyren Haven,” which translates to Egg Harbor. Will the Ocean City Boardwalk Ever Have Carnival Games? Well, the Boardwalk already offers a lot to do. You’ll find a mirror maze, mini golf, basketball and baseball challenges and escape rooms across the strip. Other towns have riskier games like ring tosses, but not Ocean City. The traditions of the town, which was founded in 1879 as a Methodist camp meeting, don’t embrace gambling, even on the Boardwalk.
How Close is Too Close on the Beach? I recommend COVID-19 rules: 6 feet away from others at all times. This gives families plenty of space to build sandcastles and tan without being stared at by curious toddlers. And if you get too much sand on your beach blanket, you’ll make enemies quickly if you shake out your blanket into someone else’s eyes. Playland’s Castaway Cove: Ocean City’s oldest amusement pier keeps getting better By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

f you’ve ever walked on the Ocean City Boardwalk, you’re familiar with Playland's Castaway Cove. As soon as you enter the park, you hear the rush of the roller coaster as it races across the tracks, and the giggly screams of the brave passengers. A carousel spins slowly as the scene opens up in front of you, transporting tiny tots up and down on classic wooden horses. As you wander through the labyrinth of amusements, a claw ride hoists riders side to side, spinning them as they fly toward the setting sun. Families make memories as they enjoy the rides, play carnival games and enjoy refreshments. There’s so much to do, between the Ferris wheel, bumper cars, kiddie speedway whip and many more attractions. Will you relax on the old western train that circles the park, or get drenched by the multiple drops of the log flume? Will you cling tightly to

your harness on Air Race, the spinning plane ride that thrusts fearless folks upside down, or question your senses as you explore the oddities of the fun house? There’s so much to do at Playland’s Castaway Cove, the premier amusement park on 10th and Boardwalk in Ocean City. The park is always updating itself, ensuring that guests feel thrilled and welcomed at the family-friendly establishment. The pier opened in 1959 as a joint venture between David Simpson and a partner who eventually sold his equity to the Simpson family. At that time, the park boasted a carousel and a few small rides. The arcade underneath the giant pirate ship included a bowling alley and a few classic carnival games. By 1992. Playland offered upward of 20 rides and opened its most ambitious attraction, the Flitzer roller coaster. The

park was small, and with the new roller coaster, Simpson knew that he needed more space. In 1996, Simpson bought the second half of the modern property located directly behind the Flanders Hotel. This allowed the park to add a kiddie roller coaster, a train and swings. Operating an amusement pier proved to be a difficult task. City ordinances made expansion difficult. Simpson was required to lobby the Ocean City mayor and council so he could keep expanding Playland. Brian Hartley, Castaway Cove’s vice president, has worked for the company for 31 years. He manages all operations of the park, including advertising and hiring seasonal workers. “We always try to keep things fresh,” Hartley said. “This year we added music to enhance the ambiance on the pier, and it's great to hear families singing along and having a good time.”

Playland is rebuilding, with plans to return the iconic pirate ship and arcade space to their former glory. Hartley said they hoped to finish construction by the summer of 2022, but because of worker shortages and inflation in the price of materials, the project has taken longer than expected. As of now, Hartley reports that the ship will be back by approximately spring 2023. “The original pirate ship and arcade were featured at the 1938 World’s Fair, and were shipped to Ocean City in pieces, so the space had a lot of history,” said Hartley.

In May of 2017, the first large-scale roller coaster was built at Playland. The S&S steel launched coaster has excited coaster enthusiasts and casu-

al thrillseekers alike. The 125-foot-tall ride runs at a top speed of 64 mph, exposing riders to a maximum of 4 Gs. Gale Force, as the coaster is named, is the biggest, most impressive ride in Ocean City history. At the same time, Playland introduced two more coasters: Wild Waves and Whirlwind. Wild Waves, which also opened in 2017, is a more traditional medium-thrill coaster manufactured by E & F Miler Industries. It wraps around Gale Force and was originally going to be painted white, but time constraints left the ride unpainted. Whirlwind, opened in 2016, is a spinning family coaster on a small track with a figure eight layout. “Our most popular attraction by far is the Double Shot,” said Hartley of the 85-foot tall drop tower ride. “We replaced the older version with a new identical model a few years ago, but now we have parents, who rode the ride when they were young, screaming alongside their teenagers, making the ride a part of their family traditions.” Castaway Cove is so much more than just rides. The Simpson family also operates Seaside Village Mini Golf (the course with the massive artificial great white shark) and the Seaside Speedway, a go-kart experience beneath the Boardwalk. Two
more 19 -hole mini golf courses owned by Castaway Cove are the Golden Galleon Pirate Golf courses, featuring a snarling mechanical crocodile and singing parrots. “We are always striving to improve,” said Hartley.
“We listen to our customers and try to give them what they want.” Hartley also addressed Playland’s commitment to the well-being of the community. Castaway Cove prides itself in supporting local causes, such as the Ocean City Humane Society. A few weeks ago, the business donated almost 200 ride pass wristbands to people with developmental disabilities through the non-profit Heart of Surfing. found myself thumbing through old photos on my phone recently. There are several thousand of them, mostly of family and they go back years. Most of the pictures brought smiles to my face while some proud and others brought a bit of sadness as I looked at pictures of loved ones who are no longer with us. Now it’s easy to see the changes in my children as they grow and that’s expected. But I look at pictures of me from five or ten years ago and I see a difference as well. That to me is the real shocker. When I look in the mirror today, I don’t see as much a change as when I put todays Jeff next to a picture of 2010 Jeff. So, what’s my point? No matter how much you try, as the Steve Miller Band sings
time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping into the future. There is nothing you can do to stop it. It’s automatic. But just because you and I grow older, doesn’t automatically mean we will be any wiser with age. That is not automatic. The famed speaker Charles ‘Tremendous’ Jones said, “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” In other words our growth intellectually and socially is purely up to each of us. And you have to be intentional. That means you and I need to take action if the person we are tomorrow is wiser, smarter, more engaged with life than the person we are today. I’ve often heard people say that as they get older they are reluctant to retire. The reason being that they need to have a reason to get up every morning. Now I’m not discouraging anyone from retiring but if you do, the best advice I’ve heard is to find a reason to plant your feet on the ground and get up each morning. I told someone just the other day that physically I’m starting to feel my age creep up on me, but in my
mind I’m still 25. I like to think that’s because I’m intentional about my personal growth. My goal each day is to learn something new. Because of my journalistic background, I’m curious by nature. I tend to ask a lot of questions. That’s a good thing because it helps to keep my mind sharp and open to new ideas and concepts. My advice to stay younger than your physical body? Set goals, live each day with purpose and curiosity, ask questions, read, listen to podcasts; anything to end today knowing more about something (anything) than you did when your feet hit the ground this morning. Let’s do everything in our power to make sure that although time keeps on slipping, our mind doesn’t. Jeff Whitaker is a veteran broadcaster here in South Jersey. Susan, who died on July 15, 2015, was a big
supporter of the Ocean City Beach Patrol, especially the women lifeguards. Susan and her husband, Fred, wrote nine book on Ocean City history, including Ocean City Beach Patrol. The OCRAA also presented $1,000 each to Aimee Altieri and Colin Randles. The scholarships were presented in honor and memory of Alfred “Bud” McKinley and Dolores Daniele.

hat’s the deal with CBD? Short for Cannabidiol, CBD is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. While cannabis is widely known for its psychoactive properties (owing to another famous compound, THC), CBD itself is not known to have any intoxicating effects. In recent years, clinical research on CBD has shown encouraging results in the cannabinoid’s potential effectiveness in managing chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety, and insomnia. (While these results are promising, it ’s important to note that there is not yet enough conclusive evidence to determine the health benefits of CBD, and as with anything else, you should consult your doctor before trying it.) You’re also likely to see it pop up on bar and restaurant menus, as baristas and bartenders are channeling their creativity into concocting CBD-infused beverages. Two Atlantic Christian School Students Receive $1,000 Scholarships From Carson Scholars Fund
A
tlantic Christian School students have received $1,000 scholarships for college from the Carson Scholars Fund – 10th grader Evangelina Kim and 6th grader Malena Meyer. The Fund held a scholarship awards ceremony on May 22 to recognize all of this year’s recipients at Goucher College in Towson, Maryland. The fund was founded by world-renowned Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurosurgeon Benjamin S. Carson, M.D. and his wife, Candy.
Malena’s name is already displayed. According to the Fund guidelines, once a student is named a Carson Scholar he or she is eligible to apply for scholar recognition in future years and can receive additional scholarship awards. Evangelina and Malena are among more than 10,000 gifted students from across the United States that have been named Carson Scholars since the Fund’s creation in 1994. Evangelina’s scholarship application described a variety of community service activities, including coaching a basketball program at a kids camp last summer at her church, New Life Assembly of God Church in Egg Harbor Township. his time of year brings a flurry of events—proms and semi-formals one weekend, graduations and weddings the next. After picking out the perfect dress and renting that handsome suit, adding coordinating flowers will make the finishing touch to each of these happy occasions. But those embellishments can come at a costly price. Consider making your own bouquets and boutonnières from flowers in the garden.
Fortunately, many of these festivities take place around June or July, just as the garden is flaunting all its beauty. Roses are always a good choice, and this time of year, most are in full bloom. They make perfect flowers for any occasion and hold up well in bouquets. Sunflowers, peonies, zinnias, and dahlias also make excellent cut flowers. I love using catmint in bouquets as a filler flower. They look good for a long time after being cut, and the lavender-colored flowers go well with most other colors. Some types of flowers will wilt fairly quickly after being cut, so you want to choose ones that will keep

A flower that looks perfect one day, may be “spent” the next. You can start your bouquets the day prior to the event, but keep the stems long so that you can give them a last minute trim right before you hand over the bouquet. Make the first cut at an angle and immediately place them in cool water. Keep your vases of cut flowers out of direct sunlight and in a cool area if possible. Raw Vegan Recipes for Anyone Who Hates Cooking
ave you ever heard of a raw vegan? Imagine eating only plant-based foods, and not being able to cook any of them. Studies show that eating uncooked foods (not including poultry) offer more nutritional benefits because heat depletes vitamins and warps proteins. Raw vegans will
preach to you about how eating raw reduces rates of cancer and heart disease, and on a less serious note, takes way less time cleaning up. Many Americans have reduced their meat intake to support a healthier lifestyle. Docuseries like “What the Health” and “Forks Over Knives” show how consuming meat and dairy lead to high cholesterol levels, obesity, diabetes, heart failure and cancer. The meat industry also depletes the
environment, using up resources like water and grain and polluting low-income communities. Brands like Impossible Meat have made finding protein replacements simple and delicious. So you wanna eat like raw vegan, and potentially find the Fountain of Youth and the Tree of Life in the bottom of a salad mix bag? It can be daunting at first. Raw veganism does not allow consumption of any cooked or baked goods, including bread, crackers, and even pasta. Your first thought of a raw vegan meal may be twenty apple slices or a bowl of cold oatmeal. This may surprise you, but eating like a raw vegan can be an adventure. Here are a couple recipes to inspire you and help you get started:
Zucchini Noodles with Asian-Inspired Sauce
Ingredients: ● 2 large zucchini squashes ● 2 cups of coconut milk ● 1 cup of peanuts, chopped finely and shell removed ● 2 tablespoons of soy sauce ● 1 teaspoon of ground ginger ● 3 cloves of garlic, crushed ● A dash of red pepper flakes ● 1 lime, juiced and zested Use a spiralizer to twist zucchini into noodles (after washing first). Place into a bowl of ice water. Chop peanuts, crush garlic and prepare lime. In a large bowl, combine soy sauce, coconut milk, crushed garlic, red pepper flakes, ginger, lime juice and zest, and peanuts. Use tongs to transfer noodles into the sauce. Mix evenly and then serve. One mouth-watering meal, served!

Ingredients: Your choice of poblano or bell peppers, cleaned and cut down the middle ● 1 block of cashew “goat” cheese ● 1 avocado, diced and pit/skin removed ● A sprinkle of garlic powder ● A handful of basil leaves, julienned ● 5 large carrots, grated ● Sesame seeds as a garnish Clean and slice peppers. Place each on facing up on a serving tray. Combine “goat” cheese, avocado, basil leaves, grated carrot, garlic powder and salt to taste. Once the filling is evenly mixed, spoon into the peppers. Enjoy as an appetizer or snack! Remember, you don’t have to fully commit to any diet. Just do what makes you comfortable, if that means incorporating some cooked foods, so be it. Most doctors would recommend including more “health-conscious” meals to boost nutrition and digestion, so try one of these recipes! You may find yourself feeling better. Paddle for a Cause Hits The Water This Saturday By Valerie Lonkart
O
n Saturday, June 11, 2022, approximately 75 participants will converge on Ski Beach in Ventnor Heights to partake in this year’s Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation’s Paddle for a Cause. This marks the fourteenth anniversary of the event. This year’s Paddle for a Cause offers something for everyone. Those wanting an endurance event can paddle in the 22-mile, around the island race. For those wanting something a little bit less grueling, there is the 6-mile paddle-at-your-own-pace option. And if team sports are more your speed, gather four to six friends and join the Supsquatch 1 miler, which is the paddleboard version of a dragon boat, minus the drum. This year’s event and afterparty will be held at Ski Beach, which is at the end of Dorset Avenue in Ventnor Heights. The afterparty will begin at 1 p.m. at the same location as the race, which is a departure from previous years. “We want to make this more of a family event,” said current DRCF President Brady Middlesworth. The afterparty is being hosted by Bocca Restaurant and will feature
music by Mel and Tony. While admission is free, those wanting to eat or drink can pay as they go. There will be plenty of DRCF merchandise for sale, and of course, donations are always welcome. According to Middlesworth, Paddle for a Cause was born when seven friends of local surf legend Dean Randazzo opted to paddle around Absecon Island as a show of solidarity to Randazzo and others who were battling cancer. From there the event has grown to include close to 100 participants. The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation hopes to raise $75,000 with this year’s Paddle for a Cause. Each participant sets a fundraising goal, and through donations from family and friends, reaches that goal. Randazzo and friends launched the foundation after Randazzo himself battled Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation was created in 2001 with the mission to promote cancer awareness within the surfing community and to provide financial support to people battling cancer. “Dean wanted to help people in similar situations, to turn something negative into something positive,” Middlesworth said.
Since its inception in 2001, The Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation has strived to provide need-based financial assistance directly to people who have cancer. To date, the foundation has donated over $500,000 to people in need. The organization has also provided grants to Gilda’s Club of South Jersey, Shore Medical Cancer Center, The Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer Fund, The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Jersey, AtlantiCare, and Cape Regional Cancer Center. A nationally-registered non-profit 501(c)(3), the foundation is run by a
dedicated group of volunteers. This allows DRCF to donate approximately 90% of its proceeds, directly helping members of our community. The Legacy of New Jersey’s Equestrian Roadways How the Black Horse and White Horse Pikes got their names

ver wonder how South Jersey's two equestrian roadways got their names, or why they are so prominent in our communities? Here’s a look at the histories of the White Horse and Black Horse pikes. The turnpike could not compete. By 1893 the turnpike had stopped collecting tolls entirely and by 1913, maintenance responsibility of the route reverted to the public, and it became known as the White Horse Trail. Things got better in 1922. With the automobile becoming the dominant form of transport, the entire road was paved in concrete making it the world's longest concrete paved highway. Highway connection to the world west of the Delaware River became a reality in 1926 when the Ben Franklin Bridge opened. Today the White Horse Pike runs almost 59 miles between Atlantic City and Camden. It narrows from six lanes in Atlantic City to four lanes, undivided as it passes through smaller mainland towns until it reaches Egg Harbor City where motorists enjoy a median for several miles. US Route 30, or the White Horse Pike, runs from Astoria, Ore., to Atlantic City. In New Jersey, the road connects the Ben Franklin Bridge through Collingswood, Pennsauken Township, Haddon Heights, Barrington, Berlin, Waterford Township, Atco, Clementon, Magnolia, Winslow Township, Hammonton, Mullica Township, Egg Harbor City, Galloway Township, Absecon and Atlantic City. The White Horse Pike’s twin route, the Black Horse Pike, has a very different history. It started in 1795 when surveyors working for Old Gloucester County mapped out a new road, replacing the “meandering old Irish road.” The Black Horse Pike has had many names including Route 48, Route 42, US 40, Route 18S, US 322, which all refer to the same road at different sections and in different eras. Ultimately, the Black Horse Pike refers specifically to the section of US 322 that runs from Mays Landing to Atlantic City. The road in its entirety connects the Walt Whitman Bridge to downtown Atlantic City. It connects these towns: Camden, Haddon Township, Mount Ephraim, Bellmawr, Runnemede, Gloucester Township, Washington Township, Monroe Township, Folsom, Hamilton Township, Egg Harbor Township, Pleasantville and Atlantic City. If you continue on US 322 across the country, you’ll reach downtown Cleveland and eventually Silver Summit, Utah. So what’s in a name? The White Horse Pike was named for the White Horse Tavern, a popular spot in the late 1800s and early 1900s. When the state bought the Black Horse Pike 1903, it designated the route as the “Blackwood Pike.” Twenty-three years later, builders providing maintenance to the road

formed an association to rename the Blackwood Pike the “Black Horse Pike.” The White Horse Pike was such a popular roadway that the Blackwood Pike was nicknamed “the second White Horse Pike to the shore.” The builders hoped to capitalize on the White Horse Pike’s success and remind motorists of the parallel, less-trafficked route. Both pikes are known for their retro charm and offbeat roadside attractions. Standing along the White Horse Pike is the metal sculpture of a horse hovering 50 feet above a grocery store, keeping watch over its name-
sake route. Along each road you’ll find fast food spots, department stores, hole-in-the-wall bars, and vast farmlands. The Black Horse Pike offers a
rodeo, an old racetrack and many miles of marshlands. So as you drive down one of the pikes to grab a meal, run errands, or visit some friends, remind yourself that you are a part of the legacy of these routes. Millions have traveled down the shore via these roads, and if we are lucky, millions more will do the same as they take part in the wonder of South Jersey’s economy. I
recently had John, a contractor over for an estimate to have some work done. John and I crossed paths over four decades ago. John, my wife and I began reminiscing together about the “good old days'' which for us, was the 1970’s. That would put me in my 30’s. We talked about the usual Margate haunts, such as Gables, Maloney’s and of course, Maynards to name a few. Then there was what I referred to as the “Route to Perdition” or the Longport Boulevard through a strip of Egg Harbor Township to Somers Point where we sampled the wares of Tony Marts and Bayshores. Somers Point closed at 2 a.m. The road back to Margate brought us to The Dunes in that strip of EHT where the refrain was “Dunes ‘til Dawn.” The Dunes in the early hours of the morning looked like a battlefield. Bodies were hanging out of open car doors, draped on hoods or just positioned in
their seatswith their heads back and mouths agape. After a hard night of partying, one cure was a sub at the Margate Sub shop which was owned by my in-laws at the time and where I fell in love. The object of my love was cheese steak sub with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and hot peppers. At times, I would consume a whole sub and an additional half. Oh, and I married my waitress who was impressed with my culinary prowess. We now share half of the sub. Another cure was a “fish combo” from Lenny’s, Washington Avenue and the beach in Margate. This sandwich was the unlikely combination of a hot dog in a roll, with a fishcake aggressively smashed on top. Chopped onions, pepper hash, and mustard completed this delicacy. Instead of napkins, a shower and a beach towel would have been more appropriate. Another favorite site of defilement was Maloney’s on South Washington Ave. One could choose from the more gentrified, pub-like atmosphere of the Beef and Beer where a roast beef sandwich on a roll would not only have you repeatedly wiping your face but your forearms as well. Their
Maloney's Tavern, "back in the day" establishment next door, which was affectionately known as the Animal House, had a low ceiling that kept the cigarette smoke and various other aromas just about at head level. It was shoulder to shoulder in the summer, music was blasting and if you didn’t walk out with eyes burning, beer stains, and sweat on your clothing, you just weren’t having a good time. Still around today and with a lengthy resume is Maynard’s on Amherst Avenue in Margate. My wife
and I along with some friends would gather there for drinks, burgers, billiards,and sand table shuffleboard. One night, after we all had a few thirst quenchers, my wife wanted a burger and inquired to the culinary staff as to whether the burger was all beef. An all beefy bouncer came up, grabbed my wife firmly under the arm, and had her standing on her toes. I intervened in such a way that resulted in me walking to my apartment a couple of blocks away. Ahh, good times. Of course, there was work the next day, sometimes. It often depended on whether there was surf or not. Often, sitting on a surfboard basking in the warm sun with the cool, salt water running down my face, was the best cure after a night of debauchery. After we finished our reminiscing, sharing stories about “the good old days,” I realized even during those good times, the Vietnam war was raging, I had my draft card and was waiting for that letter in my mailbox, there were gas lines with odd and even days, racial unrest, the Cold War, etc. I look around at the thirty-somethings now and wonder. It has been a time of Covid, lost jobs, quarantine, travel bans and the past war in Afghanistan but I see the bars shoulder to shoulder, concerts are packed and our beaches and boardwalk crowded. The organizers have created cashless wristbands that can be used to make any onsite purchases over the weekend. It is also possible to leave the festival site and renter, allowing you to enjoy all the wonderful things on offer in Wildwood itself. ou never like to see a guy lose his job. That said, I was definitely caught by surprise last week when I was trying to list a pair of Phillies tickets on StubHub and my email dinged with a notification. I thought it was the confirmation that I had listed

And those of us who came of age in the '80s remember when New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner fired managers in-season 10 times between 1975 and 1990, including twice in 1982. Part of the reason why mid-season firings are no longer routine: They almost never provide the short-term boost to a struggling team. That said, the Phillies won the first three games since the switch. As I write this, they are set to play three in Milwaukee, but the schedule lightens up after that. The Mets and the NL East title seem out of reach, but a wildcard spot isn’t completely out of the picture.
MV-3 Meets the Millville Meteor One last Phillies comment: I was in Section 114, Row 39 last Sunday, June 5 to watch the Phillies rally and beat Mike Trout and the Angels 9-7. When Bryce Harper hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 8th inning, that was as loud as I’ve heard a crowd at Citizens Bank Park since the 2008 or 2009 season, I think. Attendance was close to or above 30,000 each of the three games against the Angels, and you have to think Millville’s Mike Trout had something to do with that. Now, Trout was in the middle of a career-worst slump. He actually ended the three-game series 0-11, with 4 strikeouts, a walk, and a run scored. As I write this, Trout ended his 0-26 slide with a single against Boston back at home, but the Angels still lost their 12th straight. Either way, it was good to see the “Millville Meteor” in South Philadelphia for a game for the first time since 2014.

The total prize money is $255 million this year, including $25 million for each of the seven regular-season tournaments, the richest in professional golf. Linwood Quilter Brings Beautiful Blankets to South Jersey

W
hen Patty Waltermyer moved from Upper Darby, PA to Linwood, she knew she wanted to be a creator. She loved to sew and make handmade clothing, so she decided to try something she’s always dreamed of: starting her own quilting business. The retired music teacher has loved crafting since she was in high school, and when she took a quilting class in 1984 (she was 30 years old at the time), she knew she was in the right place. “In 2020, as I was finishing making quilts for all three of my children, I decided to branch out and make quilts for others in the community,” she said. Waltermyer established “Quiltessentially Patty,” her very own quilting business in Linwood. She’s very active on Facebook and takes special custom orders for a variety of quilted products. She makes tote bags, wall hangings, table runners, bowl cozies,
zippered pouches, Christmas tree skirts and classic blankets. Since Waltermyer stepped away from teaching, she spends her days laying fabric, cutting squares along a template, and sometimes sewing pieces together by hand. To make her process more efficient, the quilter uses a rotary cutter and giant ruler to accurately connect fabric. She says that the rotary cutter allows her to work quickly and offer a fair price to customers, because completely handmade quilts can be very expensive. “One time someone asked me to
do a quilt in the style of the nautical alphabet,” she said. “It took a long time to sketch out designs and create something so math heavy and tedious!” When she isn’t quilting, Waltermyer spends most of her time crocheting blankets to support Project Linus, a charity that provides handmade blankets for children in need. Waltermyer has donated tens of blankets to children in the hospital, living on the streets, or kids within the foster care system. The former music teacher also loves to play piano and support her husband, who is a local pastor. The couple moved to Linwood to help revitalize Hope Community Church, which now meets regularly at Atlantic Christian School in Egg Harbor Township. “I am really passionate about working with people and making dreams a reality,” said Waltermyer. “I love being creative and designing things that brighten up peoples’ homes.”

Who Shot J.R. ? (Do you remember?) From "Dallas" (1978-1991) on CBS. In the movies, “Top Gun: Maverick” continues to rake in the bucks. According to Forbes, “The $170 million film has earned $295.6 million domestic and $557.2 million worldwide, already becoming Tom Cruise’s biggest domestic earner (sans inflation but give it time) and his fifth-biggest worldwide earner (again, sans inflation) behind War of the Worlds ($600 million) and the last three Mission: Impossible films.” But with big money comes trouble too. The family of the man who wrote a magazine article that inspired the original film wants "Top Gun: Maverick" out of theaters. The original “Top Gun” was inspired by a 1983 article in California magazine written by Ehud Yanay. Before his death, he told The Wall Street Journal that producer Don Simpson called him from a dentist’s waiting room where he was reading the article and said that he was interested in turning the piece into a film. “Top Gun” would become a smash upon its release in 1986, becoming one of Cruise’s signature films. While Mayor Small had announced a goal of raising $500,000 with the gala, that target was exceeded, with the charity event raising over $536,000 for several Atlantic City youth organizations. One hundred percent of the gala’s proceeds went to the Greater Atlantic City Youth Association, Inc., a non-profit that will provide the funds to the Atlantic City Dolphins, Atlantic City Police Athletic League, Boys & Girls of Club of Atlantic City, Empowerment Tools Coalition, and Omega by the Sea Foundation. The black-tie gala kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony including the mayor, his family, and executives from Harrah’s Resort, which was followed by a red carpet entrance for VIPs, local dignitaries, and members of the community. “It’s been an honor and a privilege to raise this much money to support the youth in Atlantic City,” said Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. “I made it clear from the start that this would not be a political event, but rather a fundraiser. “Momo and Snap Are Not Friends” by Airlie Anderson captures children’s imagination with opaque watercolor illustrations that tell the tale of how a competitive relationship between a crocodile and a monkey turns into a supportive friendship. This illustrated adventure is perfect for preschool-age children to enjoy this summer. While taking a break from playing in the waves children can enjoy a copy of “The ABC’s of Ocean City” by Tassia Schreiner where they can learn more about the elements of the Jersey shore town. Children can switch off the remote and open up, “A Kind of Paradise” by Amy Rebecca Tan and follow the adventure of Jamie. After breaking her middle school’s honor code, Jamie must volunteer in her local library all summer as the consequence. Despite the initial disappointment that her summer would be spent with books instead of friends she ultimately ends up developing friendships with the library staff and patrons. The book shows the power communities have to lift us up and is an inspiring read for tweens. “Amelia Bedelia Road Trip!” by Herman Parish is a great book to pick up for beginning independent readers. The story follows Amelia Bedelia, America's favorite housekeeper, as a young girl with a childhood full of hilarious misunderstandings. In this illustrated adventure, young Amelia
Bedelia takes a road trip with her family with lots of laughs--just like the kind that won us over in the original books when we were kids reading Peggy Parish’s tales of Bedelia as an adult taking her housekeeper instructions too literally. Herman Parish was in the fourth grade when his aunt wrote her first Amelia Bedelia book. Parish now continues to carry on the family legacy for a new generation of readers who will laugh at Bedelia’s adventures. After a long day at the beach children can snuggle up in bed to read “Good Night Jersey Shore” by Adam Gamble. This board book is for all ages of beach
lovers who wish to reflect on their day at the ocean before a peaceful sleep. You can find one of these suggested books on Amazon, department store, or at the book store. orthfield children ages 5 to 15 were invited to the Tilton Driving Range for the first ever Golf With a Cop event Saturday, June 4, to learn
the basics of the sport from the Northfield Police Department, and some valuable lessons that will help them stay on course in life. Organizers said the day was a huge success as 14 young golfers turned out to get into the action. While everyone had fun, John McClellan was the big winner, taking home a family four pack of Phillies tickets. It was a community effort as Ronnie O’Toole’s Driving Range provided four driving range stalls and several buckets of balls, Carluccio’s donated pizza, the Northfield Mothers’ League provided Ken’s Ice Cream and Atlantic Prevention Resources provided a representative who spoke about stress in children and the mechanisms available to relieve it.
