Major economic benefits forecasted from offshore wind

O

n Tuesday, May 31, the PR Council of Atlantic City hosted representatives from Orsted, offshore wind contractor for the state of New Jersey.

The meeting, held at Resorts’ Atlantic Ballroom in Atlantic City, centered on how offshore wind will affect the economy in Atlantic and Cape May counties.

Tom Suthard, Orsted’s New Jersey stakeholder relations manager, presented information on upcoming projects, innovation, and updates relating to Ocean Wind 1 and Ocean Wind 2, the wind farms being built 15 miles off the coast of Atlantic and Cape May counties.

Since former Gov. Chris Christie’s initial wind proposal in 2010, and Gov. Phil Murphy’s Offshore Wind Strategic Plan in 2020, Orsted has been busy establishing itself as an industry leader across the United States and Europe.

The Danish company has built nine offshore wind farms in several states in-

cluding New York, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, and believes that New Jersey offers promising opportunities for sustainable energy.

In the next two years, Orsted plans to construct Ocean Wind 1, which will power up to 500,000 homes and support thousands of jobs.

The company will stage its projects out of the Port of Paulsboro and the Wind Port at Salem, which will manufacture and prep ships to carry wind turbines across the ocean to the wind farm.

After Ocean Wind 1 is operational, Orsted will begin work on Ocean Wind 2, set slightly south of its sister farm.

The Wind Port is made possible through millions in government infrastructure spending. The 2022 New Jersey budget includes $200 million for the port in addition to $13 million from the BPU and $44 million from the state Department of Transportation for dredging. An additional $9 million comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation for the Salem Marine Terminal.

“We are basically building an entire industry from the sea floor up,” said

Suthard. “Phase 1 will employ about 260 New Jersey painters, welders and workers, and when Phase 2 occurs, we will employ over 500 people, with wind technicians earning approximately $100,000 per year.”

By September of 2022, Atlantic Cape Community College expects to open a Wind Training Safety Center at the Worthington Campus in Atlantic City and at Gardner’s Basin. The center will meet industry safety standards for first aid, fire awareness, working at heights, and sea survival. The program is expected to attract students from all over the country and train 1,800 in its first year.

The Atlantic Cape initiative is funded by a $3 million challenge grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. A similar NJEDA grant worth nearly $1 million was approved for Rowan College of South Jersey to create an offshore wind technician training program. Also, Orsted will open offices in the city as well, which should be ready this summer.

When it comes to financing the construction projects, Orsted has committed to paying for all projects with some major investments from PSEG and General Electric. The Danish company says it’s dedicated to the well-being of the Garden State, protecting lands, waters and livelihoods for the future.

Liz Thomas, public relations account manager for Thomas/Boyd Communications, representing Orsted in New Jersey, reports that the community has expressed two main concerns: appearance, to the extent that the turbines block the horizon on the ocean, and disruptions to the fishing industry.

Addressing the first issue, Thomas said that because the wind farms will be located 15 miles offshore, the massive structures will not disrupt the beauty of the coastline.

In regards to marine ecosystems and fishing vessels, Thomas said that neither will be negatively impacted by the wind farms. Orsted has funded multiple research inquiries and no data indicates hardship on sea creatures. In

fact, the U.S. Bureau of Offshore Management, which oversees locations of offshore industrial work, has deemed the waters off South Jersey suitable for Orsted’s projects, in large part because that section of the Atlantic Ocean is considered a “fish desert.”

To further dispel negative perceptions, Orsted has donated $12 million to the New Jersey Wildlife Fund. Also, the company plans to deploy bubble curtains, which break up the noise pollution in the waters, protecting animals like the Atlantic white whale.

“It will be a transition, but it will be similar to casino gaming,” said Suthard.

“It will benefit our economy and help Atlantic City grow.”

Atlantic County Commissioner Caren Fitzpatrick spoke in favor of the new projects.

“I am a strong advocate and the loudest voice for sustainable, renewable energy,” Fitzpatrick said. “This is a very big deal for us and it has a huge economic impact.”

he Showboat Atlantic City held a grand opening Saturday, May 28 for its newest all-ages attraction, Showboat Raceway at Lucky Snake.

The 40,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art indoor electric go-kart track, located next to

Showboat's new Lucky Snake Arcade and Sports Bar, allows racers of all ages to travel through a neon-lit “Escaping Las Vegas”- themed track in go-karts custom-built in Italy.

The Raceway at Lucky Snake promises thrills and fun for the whole family.

The 60,000-square-foot Lucky Snake Arcade opened in May of 2021, and includes 300 games with vintage video and pre-video arcade attractions, bowling simulators, pinball, virtual reality, new games and video games based on popular movies and TV shows like “The Walking Dead.”

In January, Showboat broke ground on a $100 million indoor Island Water Park, which is scheduled to be open in 2023. The projects reflect the desire of Showboat owner Bart Blatstein to position the former casino hotel as the premiere site for quality family fun in Atlantic City, At the May 28 grand opening, Blatstein welcomed city officials, Shore Local, and the world to the ribbon cutting and celebration.

The event included music provided by DJ Caution, and free popcorn for everyone.

People attending got to pose with "Raceway" models. There was also a wheel of chance where guests could win prizes of game cards for the Lucky Snake Arcade.

(Now I just need Blatstein to buy and rebuild the Atlantic City Race Course in Mays Landing, because I love horse racing, too.)

New Ocean City jitney service offers rides to boardwalk and downtown

S

tarting on May 27, Ocean City began transporting passengers via jitney across the island, allowing for easier parking and cheaper service.

Fare starts as little as $2 and will provide rides between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. daily during the peak season. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, jitneys will be in operation between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and take guests to and from Asbury Avenue.

The downtown line will run between June 14 and Aug. 25. The city will adjust the schedule as they accumulate ridership data.

Boardwalk rides begin June 17 regularly, but will also be available June 3, June 4, June 10 and June 11.

The jitneys will run a continuous loop between 55th and North streets. The city has created a map and schedule for people interested in specific details.

Ocean City has collaborated with the app Jitney Surfer to help potential riders navigate their transportation.

Members of the Jitney Association and Ocean City officials The app alerts users of moving jitneys and will soon take payment for rides through credit/debit cards (the jitney can only be paid for through cash as of today). Jitney Surfer also includes basic tourism information on Ocean City and its attractions. The app is available via the App Store and Google Play store.

“Providing safe and reliable transportation during the busy summer season is one of our greatest needs,

and I'm looking forward to offering this service to our residents and guests,” Mayor Jay Gillian said. “Riders will be able to pay a small fare through an app and also track the location of the jitneys, so they don’t have to wait at the curb for too long.”

The decision to create a jitney service was based on a 2019 economic study conducted by Econsult Solutions, which analyzed economic and tourism trends and provided

recommendations to help America’s Greatest Family Resort become even better. Other recommendations included more diversity between housing options, such as Airbnbs, more signage to assist pedestrians, and a variety of attractions that would interest new populations of tourists.

It’s no secret that parking near the Boardwalk and downtown Asbury Avenue can be costly and time-consuming. City officials reported that they expect beachgoers and shoppers to optimize the new jitney service, along with the Parkmobile parking payment app.

“I took a giant sigh of relief when I heard about the new jitney service,” said Kaitlyn Crosstree, an Ardmore resident who spends at least three weeks in Ocean City with her family every summer. “I have three kids and a husband who loves convenience, so this addition makes us even more sure that Ocean City is the best vacation spot for families.”

AC Beer and Music Festival returns for an epic weekend of brews and tunes

T

he Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival returns this weekend (June 4th and 5th) for its 16th year of celebrating some of America’s best.

The festival will take be stepping it up a notch this year and taking place at Bader Field (545 N Albany Avenue) covering over 1.4 million square feet.

This year, there is more than 150 different breweries and nearly 1000 different kinds of beer available for you to try. From local microbreweries to some of the most famous brewers in the world, you will not be short of something to try. Featured breweries include Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales, Goose Island Beer Company,

and Flying Fish Brewing Co. Some of the more local breweries include Behr Brewing from Cape May, Diving Horse Brewing Co. from Atlantic City, and Garden State Beer from Galloway. Breweries from the west coast will feature, and there is even a brewery flying in from France for the festival, so you know it is going to be huge this year.

“The AC Beer and Music festival is a great opportunity for a novice or a beer geek to really jump in there and get to know breweries, get to know brewers who make the beer, and try new and exciting styles to expand your beer palette.” explains Jon Henderson from Good Time Tricycle, the event’s producer.

Of course, music is paramount to the success of the festival in previous years, and this year’s line up features some huge acts. Session #1 on June 4th will see the main stage headlined

by Alakaline Trio and supported by

Thrice, with music starting at 2pm and finished at 6pm. Then, session #2 on Sunday will be headlined by international superstars, New Found Glory, and supported by Four Years Strong. The music during Session #2 will begin at 12pm and finish at 4pm.

Learn to Identify Poison Ivy to Avoid Ruining Your Fun in the Garden Let It Grow

fter a late start, warm weather has finally arrived and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Roses and peonies are enjoying basking in the sunny days, as gardeners are busy buying plants and soil. But a few bad players have entered the scene as well.

While we are happily digging away, poison ivy lurks quietly beneath our feet, among the weeds, and over our heads. Knowing how to recognize this insidious plant can save you weeks of pain and frustration.

Poison ivy changes throughout the seasons, so learning each stage of the plant will help you avoid trouble. In early spring, we are eager to see everything sprouting and poking

through the earth. But the tiny leaves and vines of poison ivy are growing as well, almost hidden at first. These small leaves often start out with a burgundy color. You may have heard the old adage warning of “leaves of three, let them be''?

Even when the leaves of poison ivy are tiny, they will start forming on the vine in groups of three leaves. Keep in mind that the vine will spread along the ground, so you must avoid touching the vine as well. Later in the season, the leaves will quickly grow and turn green, then sometimes deepen to a dark, glossy green. Eventually, poison ivy will produce berries that birds and other animals can eat, thus spreading the plant further. In the fall, the leaves will start to turn the colors of yellow, red, and burgundy just like the leaves on trees and bushes.

have an allergic reaction. The itchy, bubbly rash can take a few days to emerge, sometimes showing up on different body parts later than the first signs of the rash. The allergic reaction occurs when our skin comes in contact with an oil called urushiol, contained in all parts of the plant. It’s the same allergen found in poison oak and poison sumac. This substance can get under our fingernails, and spread as we touch different parts of our body. The oil can remain on gardening tools and clothing for years.

Though the rash itself isn’t contagious, your neighbor can get it from borrowing your shovel. If the oil remains on your shoes, you can become reinfected when you lace up again. Though your pet’s fur may protect them from getting the rash, Fluffy can carry the oil to you if they have brushed up against the leaves.

Just like other leaves, poison ivy leaves will change color in the fall.

Your best defense against this irritating rash would be to learn what the plant looks like to avoid touching it. Poison ivy is often found growing alongside Virginia creeper (which has five leaves but can also cause an allergic reaction in some people) and English ivy. In addition to the garden, you can find poison ivy on a woodland hike or along the paths through the dunes leading to the beach. If you

feel you might have been exposed to the plant, wash your hands and under your fingernails as soon as possible.

Make sure you wash any clothing, tools, or pets that may be carrying the oil. You can purchase over-thecounter creams that you apply to your skin before you venture out that will provide a barrier between your skin and the urushiol oil. Since I’m highly allergic, I apply a small amount of

Benadryl cream at the first sign of infection to slow the allergic reaction. But check with your doctor for medical advice.

If you find poison ivy in your garden, it’s like sin, you’ve got to deal with it or things will grow and get worse. Don’t touch it with your bare hands. Use thick rubber gardening gloves that you can rinse off or disposable gloves. Make sure you are removing the vine runners as well.

I have also used a thick plastic bag to pull small pieces of poison ivy out, using the same bag to dispose of it, by turning it inside out. (Maybe your Pennsylvania visitors can bring you a plastic bag across state lines.)

Whatever you do, don’t try burning poison ivy, since inhaling the smoke can cause serious consequences.

Learn to recognize poison ivy at all stages so you can avoid contact with this irritating plant. If you suspect you have been exposed, wash your hands, clothing and tools as soon as possible.

Then you can go back to enjoying our beautiful beaches, woodlands, and gardens of South Jersey.

’m excited to raise a glass to the start of another wonderful summer at the southern New Jersey shore. In the spirit of rising temperatures, barbecues, and beach days, I wanted to use this week’s article to shine the spotlight on one of my favorite warm-weather wines: Sauvignon Blanc. Light to medium-bodied with refreshing acidity and bright fruit flavors, Sauvignon Blanc will pair beautifully with all of your summer activities.

What is Sauvignon Blanc?

Sauvignon Blanc is a greenskinned grape indigenous to France, and it appears in blends and single varietal wines from many of the world’s best growing regions.

What does it taste like?

When considering the characteristic flavor profile of Sauvignon Blanc, think green: gooseberry,

honeydew, lime, green apple, bell pepper, fresh herbs, and grass are all common Sauvignon Blanc tasting notes. In addition to these hallmark flavors, some Sauvignon Blanc wines exhibit impressions of passion fruit, peach, nectarine, and guava. The differences in flavor often come down to the ripeness of the fruit at the time of harvest, as well as the climate of the growing region. Grapes grown in cooler climates will often not ripen to the level of grapes from warmer regions, and the resulting wines will have a firmer acid structure and more savory flavors.

Where is it grown?

As mentioned above, Sauvignon Blanc is grown in nearly every viticultural area in the world. Here’s an overview of some of my favorite SB regions: France’s Loire Valley The cool climate of the Loire Valley offers optimal growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc. You can expect these wines to boast a bright acidity, refreshing minerality, and well-integrated citrus fruit flavors. (Try Domaine de la Potine Sauvignon Blanc 2020, 13.99; and Karine Lauverjat Sancerre 2020, $27.99.)

California’s Napa Valley Many top Napa producers seek to embody the elegance of the Loire in their Sauvignon Blancs, within a considerably warmer growing region.

Napa Sauvignon Blancs will typically exhibit bolder fruit impressions (think stone fruit like peach and tropical fruit like guava and pineapple) while maintaining the finesse of their French cousins. (Try Groth Sauvignon Blanc 2020, $24.99; and CADE Sauvignon Blanc 2020, $39.99.)

New Zealand’s Marlborough region Sauvignon Blanc put New Zealand on the map as a top wine-producing region. The grape thrives in the cool

climate of Marlborough, located in the northern part of New Zealand’s south island. A long, consistent growing season allows Sauvignon Blanc grapes to ripen beautifully, with the perfect balance of fruit and acidity. (Try Babich Sauvignon Blanc 2021, $14.99; and Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2021, $35.49.)

What about food pairings?

Sauvignon Blanc pairs beautifully with creamy cheeses like goat cheese and burrata, and its herbal notes make it a good match for meals accented with basil, rosemary, and cilantro. It is also one of the few wines that pair well with vegetable-based dishes, like salads, asparagus, and artichoke.

ack G. Jernee was captain of the Ocean City Beach Patrol from 1920 to 1942. As the summer of 1934 began he was busy preparing for the National Lifeguard Tournament. It was going to be held on the 10th Street beach on July 26, 1934. The object of the tournament was to develop improved methods of lifesaving.

Two championships were to be decided at the meet: National Team Lifeguard Championship; and National Individual Lifeguard Champion.

Amphibious vehicles hit the beach in Ocean City

cean City residents have witnessed some unusual things wash ashore over the years.

I’ve seen several channel markers, buoys, and plane landings on the water, sand, and bridge. And now I can add duck boats (of sorts) to the list.

It’s not every day that you see a pair of amphibious military vehicles

land on the beach, but that’s exactly what residents in Ocean City’s South Ends saw on Friday, May 27.

The two Vietnam War-era duck boats had spent several weeks beached in Brigantine awaiting repairs. The crew was expected to dock in Cape May last Friday, until heavy fog moved in and changed their plans.

John Hennage of Montross, Va., is one of the captains of the amphibious landing craft.

“We looked at the weather; we knew there were thunderstorms, but that really doesn’t matter,” Hennage said.

After a thick blanket of fog rolled in, the crew of five made the decision to land ashore near 53rd Street.

“We got to the point where we couldn't see each other, and at that point, the best thing to do is just come to the beach.”

The two LARC-LX vehicles, named Big Jack and Wild Sally, were built in the late ’50s and early ’60s.

They were originally used by the U.S. Army for military operations during the Vietnam War. The LARC, which stands for Light Amphibious Resupply Cargo, can carry more than 100 tons of cargo or approximately 200 people.

The vehicles began active service in 1967 to support the 101st Airborne Division and 1st Cavalry Division. On the water, they have a top speed of 6 knots. By land, the vehicles can travel up to 20 mph.

The two vehicles came from Staten Island, where they were being upgraded and retrofitted. Hennage, a Marine Corps engineer, said he has been working on this project for several years.

“I went through all the engines and drivetrains and figured out how to use them using the army manuals,” he said.

Because of the vehicles’ age and use of analog technology, the gauges, oil pressure and temperature must be checked manually.

Prior to landing in Brigantine, an onboard problem forced the two vehicles to come ashore on Island Beach State Park for up to a week. As the crew made their way back in the ocean, they discovered issues with

the thermostat, prompting another landing on the Brigantine beach.

“Unfortunately, it’s taken about two weeks to get here. It should have taken us three days.”

As of Saturday, May 28 the two vehicles were en route to Cape May. “We’ve got a location where we’ll get them out of the water and they’ll sit out for about a month.”

After that, the crew plans to resume their journey with one final trek to the Chesapeake Bay, where the amphibious vehicles will be used in marine construction.

As for Hennage, the unexpected landing gave him and his crew the opportunity to spend some time in the resort community.

“I’m going to get a bite to eat at Sack O’ Subs and see a little bit of the town before heading out,” he said.

You never know what you’re going to find on the beaches of the Jersey Shore.

The 48-year-old tradition presented by the Garden Club of Ocean City features floral creations and displays from enthusiasts of all ages.

Awards are given in a variety of categories for artistic design and horticulture. This year’s theme is “Careers – All That You Can Do.” The event also features a small sales pavilion.

The public is invited to check out the beautiful displays. Show hours are 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The scenic 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) race will start at 8 a.m. at Sixth Street and Boardwalk, travel down the Boardwalk and on the streets at the northern end of Ocean City, then finish on the Ocean City High School track. Race-day registration and packet pickup are at the Ocean City High School track with parking accessible from the beach block of Fifth Street.

All proceeds benefit the Ocean City Police Benevolent Association, which supports scholarships for high school

The Skate With Kato skateboarding celebration is set for 2:30 p.m.

Saturday (June 4) at the Ocean City Skate Park at Fifth Street and Asbury Avenue. The event features a competition, music, and fun. It’s named

for Kato, a white German shepherd from the Humane Society of Ocean City, the city’s no-kill animal shelter.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Humane Society. A concert by LNJ Sessions will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the skate competition starts at 3:30 p.m.

Admission is free (with donations accepted and appreciated). There will be a $20 registration fee for each skater. Kato and his friends from the Humane Society will be on hand.

Four Summer Recipes to Refresh Your Palate and Make You Smile

emorial Day Weekend has come and gone, and now we relish in the warm summer sun.

Between beach trips, stop by your town’s farmers market and pick up some fresh, in-season produce.

Maybe you are having friends over for barbecues or stopping by your cousin’s pool with the kids. Summer is a great season for foodies because everything tastes extra yummy with sand between your toes and sun on your skin. Here are four recipes that’ll wow your crowds and power up your appetite:

Asian Cucumber Salad Ingredients: ● 6 English cucumbers ● ½ cup of rice vinegar

1 cup of roasted peanuts 2 teaspoons of sesame oil ● 1 teaspoon of soy sauce ● 1 teaspoon of fish sauce ● 1 teaspoon of sugar Sesame seeds (for garnish) Thinly slice the cucumbers (after washing them) using a sharp knife or mandolin. Transfer into a bowl.

Chop the peanuts finely and roast in the oven on a sheet pan with a touch of olive oil at 350 degrees for five minutes. Let cool briefly.

Add soy sauce, fish sauce, sesame oil, sugar, and rice vinegar. Combine with peanuts and cucumber slices and toss lightly.

Top with sesame seeds and serve with stir fry or teriyaki burgers.

½ pound of bacon 1 cup of cola soda ● ½ cup of brown sugar ● 1 cup of ketchup ● 1 onion, diced ● 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar ● 2 tablespoons of dijon mustard ● 2 teaspoons of smoked paprika ● ½ cup of adobe chipotle ● Salt to taste Saute bacon over medium heat until crispy, 7 minutes.

Remove bacon from heat and cook down diced onion in bacon fat until jammy, 10 minutes.

Pour beans into a large pan and preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Add the rest of the ingredients, including bacon and onion. Mix thoroughly.

Bake for 35 minutes uncovered until fragrant and bubbly. Serve warm!

Summer Veggie Pizza

Ingredients: ● 8 ounces of store-bought pizza dough ● 3 garlic cloves, crushed ● 6 ounces of asparagus, chopped into 1-inch pieces ● 1 pound of summer squash ● 2 lemons, freshly squeezed ● 10 oil-packed anchovies, diced ● 1/3 cup of fresh basil ● 2 cups of ricotta cheese ● 1/3 cup of olive oil ● 3 shallots, thinly sliced ● 1 teaspoon of turmeric ● 2 teaspoons of red pepper flakes ● 2 teaspoons of salt ● Shaved Parmesan Let dough rest for at least 30 minutes at room temperature.

Coat a cast-iron skillet in 1/8 cup of olive oil and stretch the dough to reach all sides of the pan.

In a medium bowl, mix ricotta cheese, crushed garlic, lemon juice, and anchovies. In a small bowl, combine salt and spices.

Spread cheese mixture evenly across the dough. Add asparagus, squash, basil, and shallots. Sprinkle spices on top and drizzle with oil.

Bake at 450 degrees for 20 minutes. Once it’s fully cooked, top with shaved parmesan. Enjoy!

Modern Baked Beans Ingredients ● 3 cans of pinto beans

No-Churn Cookies and Cream Ice Cream

Ingredients: 3 cups of heavy whipping cream ● 30 Oreo cookies ● 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract ● 1 cup of whole milk ●

1 cup of sugar 1 teaspoon of salt Place cookies in a plastic Ziploc bag. Crush cookies into bits using a rolling bin. Set aside.

In a large bowl, combine cream, milk, vanilla, salt, and sugar. Whisk together and pour into freezer-safe containers. Add crushed cookies and mix evenly into the cream base.

Freeze for at least 24 hours until hard. Scoop into bowls and enjoy as a delicious dessert!

Getting to the Coastal Barrier Islands “Part 2 - The Ocean Cape” Getting to Ocean City

It’s probable that pirates took good advantage of the resources that Pecks’ Beach, present-day Ocean City, afforded them. During the Golden Age of Pirates, which lasted roughly from 1690-1710, Peck’s Beach was uninhabited, remote, inhospitable to humans and rife with sand dunes that easily accommodated treasure for the burying. One researcher says that this barrier island was actually favored by pirates. No documentation however, was provided.

s the calendar turns Finals are set, and none of those involve a Philadelphia team, sadly.

Since I last wrote, the Phillies have continued to move in the wrong direction. A Sixers star posts an interesting tweet that gets folks riled up on social media. A national ESPN hockey analyst gives me some insight on who he thinks will be the next Flyers coach.

The big Eagles news comes off the field, as a Hall of Fame journalist closely associated with the team retires.

Also from football, on the local front, a Mays Landing native is chasing his dream by playing professional football in Germany. And, don’t forget that the ShopRite LPGA Classic is almost here.

So, without further ado, here are my extra points this week from the world of sports: ● I’ll begin with the Phillies as team owner John Middleton has to be wondering what his 223 million dollar payroll is delivering for him. That’s the largest payroll in franchise history, and for that, the Phillies are 21-28 as I write this, just 11-14 at home. ● On Memorial Day Monday, the visiting Giants hit home runs in the 9th and 10th innings to ultimately beat the Phillies 5-4 in ten innings.

The loss to Gabe Kapler and the Giants was the Phillies’ fourth consecutive loss and their 11th in the last 15 games. They are 11 games behind the division-leading New York Mets, their largest deficit on Memorial Day since 2017. Keep in mind that the 2017 Phillies lost 99 games. ● What’s wrong with the Phillies?

On the local front, I have to give a major tip of the cap to Mays Landing native and Holy Spirit grad Gavin Liepe as he is chasing his dream and playing professional football in the German Football League. Liepe (#18) played Division III football at The College of New Jersey and is now playing for the Kirchdorf Wildcats. The 23-year-old tells me via Facebook messenger that he’s playing at linebacker, nickel, and free safety, but mostly linebacker. Liepe has spent time with the Atlantic City and then Avalon Beach Patrol and most recently was teaching high school, but the chance to chase his dream and get paid to play football is one he couldn’t pass up. Best of luck Gavin and we’ll be rooting for you back here in New Jersey.

he early returns are in and they show that “Top Gun: Maverick” is a box-office hit!

You might say that the movie has broken both the sound barrier and the Memorial Day weekend box office record with an estimated fourday opening of $156 million from 4,735 theaters, according to Variety.

The updated estimates released on Memorial Day Monday push Paramount’s highly anticipated “Top Gun” sequel past the previous record-setting Memorial Day total set by Disney’s 2007 “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.” The third film in the “Pirates” franchise earned $153 million over the extended holiday weekend.

I didn’t want to hear any spoilers, so I made sure to get to the Tilton Square Theater in Northfield and see it in IMAX. Without giving away any plot details, I

What a joy to see a “popcorn movie” with a huge crowd that was laughing out loud and clapping at certain times in the movie.

36 years after the original, I’ve seen some folks argue that “Top Gun: Maverick” is an even better movie than the original. I won’t disagree with that.

In other words, I would highly recommend you to go check out this movie on the big screen at an actual movie

theater.

That said, Memorial Day weekend also saw a few streaming items drop as well. I will start with season 4 of “Stranger Things” as the first seven episodes are now out on Netflix. The final two episodes, that will wrap up the series, are scheduled to drop on July 1st. The “kids” of Hawkins are all now young adults, but I am five episodes in so far, and it has been highly entertaining.

The other big drop for the holiday weekend was “Obi-Wan Kenobi” on Disney Plus, as the first two episodes of that series are out. The show takes place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, or about nine years before Episode IV: A New Hope. The Empire has killed most of the Jedi, though a few remain in hiding. Kenobi was one of them and had settled on Tatooine to watch over young Luke Skywalker. The fun part for me is that actor Ewan McGregor is back playing the lead role, and Hayden Christiansen is as Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader. Oh yes, I will be checking this one out as soon as I get a chance.

Again, it’s on Disney Plus.

I’ve been taking every opportunity to urge you all to check out the show “Bosch: Legacy” which is on Amazon Freevee. The series follows star Titus Welliver as retired homicide detective turned private investigator Harry Bosch, as he embarks on the next chapter of his career. Attorney Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers) struggles to maintain her faith in the justice system after surviving an attempted murder, and Maddie Bosch (Madison Lintz) discovers the possibilities and challenges of being a rookie patrol cop on the streets of Los Angeles. I’m pleased to learn that the series has already been renewed for a second season.

Ewan McGregor returns as Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney Plus. drop on Amazon Prime on June 3rd with the first three episodes of what’s scheduled to be an eight-episode season. Based on the comic book series of the same name, “The Boys” is not for a younger audience, but certainly worth your time if you’re an adult.

My last item to write about this week is the late, great comedian George Carlin. Writer, director, and producer Judd Apatow and director Michael Bonfiglio have put together a two-part, four-hour documentary called, “George Carlin’s American Dream,” which is now available on HBO and HBO Max and details the life of the late comedian. That’s sitting in my DVR on my “to watch” list for sure.

The History of Somers Point’s Living Legacy An interview with Nick Regine

s we celebrate the anniversary of the AtlantiCare Concerts on the Beach in Somers Point. We are joined by the founder of The best small town concert series anywhere, Nick Regine, on whose shoulders we stand every week at this beloved concert series.

CM: Nick you have a very interesting and unique story about the origin of the Somers Point Beach Concerts.

Would you share that with us?

Nick Regine: The beach series, came about as a result of my job as Community Education and Recreation Director in Somers Point. One aspect of this job was to develop various community programs and activities. Such events as the Good Old Days Festival and Bayfest among others were the outgrowth of this effort. One of the ideas I had was doing a concert series at Kennedy Park during the summer. I thought it would be the perfect venue for this activity.

Boy was I wrong. I think I tried for about 3 years to stage a small 3 concerts series that would take place in Kennedy Park. I had an eclectic mix of music: folk, classical, and rock. The crowds were sort of underwhelming and I was both disappointed and confused. I could not figure out why the turnout was so poor given that it was a free event being held at a beautiful outdoor setting. Anyway I was about

to give up on the idea completely until back in the early 80’s when I was walking by the beach on the Fourth of July. There were like 300 people sitting on a beach waiting for the fireworks to go off from Ocean City and I said “forget Kennedy Park, I’m gonna put a band down here when the 4th comes around next year”. Next year came and I stuck a band down here and it was so well received I decided to make the switch. The beach is a venue in the center of a busy summer thoroughfare, hundreds of cars just passing by, people out for a stroll; it was alive and active and it was the perfect fit for the concert series.

Even as lovely as Kennedy Park is you had to be going there to get there.

CM: There’s no question that you created something with a magical ambience. It is such a gorgeous venue that the world class roots rock, classic rock and R&B artists that come in and play the venue want to come back just because they love the venue so much. When you started how did that start happen? How did the chemistry become apparent that you had put something together that was incredibly charming and wonderful and everybody was enjoying it so much?

Nick Regine: As in real state, the three most important things are, location, location, location. The beach is such a draw in and of itself. When you add music into the mix it creates magic. You have a beautiful backdrop of the bay with boats cruising by and a big summer moon accenting it all. It

really do. This town is so special and I wish more people would recognize this uniqueness as a little city that has everything anyone wants and all. You know, it’s multicultural, it’s as diverse as any in many different ways. There’s a buzz here, things are exciting here like a major city with the public appreciation of music. I think it’s so important to actually feel the soul of the city for this to continue happening and it’s a labor of love and it’s been great and I still continue to do it in different ways but for the same reason.

Carmen just to get back to the concert series, you know the growth of It as series was phenomenal in it’s early stages and once I retired and it was turned over to somebody else and you stepped in and you actually took it up to another level. There are more people on the beach now than I could ever have envisioned and it’s just a testament to you.

Carmen Marotta: Well you are involved in ongoing community based organizations, the Somers Point Unique experiences and the South Jersey Jazz Society. With those vehicles you continue to provide year round live entertainment in Somers Point.

Nick Regine: I have. It’s something I do because I wanted the town to

be alive year round. I think it’s so important for my own sense of well being to be able to continue promoting live music locally. I am able to do this through the South Jersey Jazz Society. It’s really has blossomed over the last for 20 years. For a town like Somers Point, with a population of maybe 10,000 to be able to boast that it has an active and vibrant jazz society that stages 25 to 30 events annually is rare indeed. As far as the Somers Point Unique Experiences Club we just try to do things quirky and different. We put on a Christmas performance every year. We have staged a week and half long event “April in Paris”, and help celebrate our historic bar area by offering tours.

Again the idea is to keep the vibrancy of the community in the forefront and put smiles on people’s faces.

I’d like to end on a thought. Over the years it has been great to be a small part of making the music scene in Somers Point a bit special. I cannot say enough about how much your efforts in this area have been a tremendous force in the same direction. Over the years I think it is noteworthy that although we occasionally worked together, we always seem to work with the same goal in mind, never view the other as competition but someone who added to the overall fabric of what makes this town so great.

Postcards from the Past

The Galleon was built in 1926 as a real estate office to attract buyers to the Neptune's Gardens development in Absecon. It was built as a replica of Christopher Columbus' Santa Maria. It was also known as the Ship house.

The ship was originally built on wetlands and accessed by a wooden plank walkway at the Absecon Beach Camp. At that time, there was a seafood restaurant in the building and a miniature version of the Absecon lighthouse nearby. When the real estate market bottomed out, the building was moved three miles away. It was used as an Atlantic gas station and various shops, restaurants, and offices over the years.

Towards the end, it housed a seldom-open antiques shop. In the late 1980s or early 1990s, the building was painted white with light blue trim.

This was the last of three ship real estate offices built. One of these was for the Pirate Ship Realty Co. in Cliffwood Beach, NJ which was destroyed by fire in 1993. The ship in Absecon was demolished in 2009.

Reflecting on the Texas Tragedy Jeff's Journal

ne week after the horrific Uvalde mass killing spree, so much has been published, broadcast, and spoken around the dinner table and water cooler.

It’s fair to say that everyone is devastated by what happened. Everyone agrees that something needs to be done. The divide comes when all of us are asked what needs to be done. I’m certain no matter what I say in this column, there will be those of you who cheer me on and agree, others who will agree with some of what I say, and still others who believe I’m way off base. That’s ok. It’s too easy to head straight to the politics of it all. Both the Left and the Right run straight to their respective talking points. Both sides are passionate. Both have valid points and both have elements of their arguments that do nothing but increase the rhetoric and unfortunately serve to divide along political lines and create quotes for clever flyers and television commercials bashing the other side come election season.

Three major elements are common to almost all of the recent mass shootings. I’m not going to spend a lot of time addressing the issues of guns. I have my strong opinions on that but I believe there is a much, much broader issue. For me (and I’m not speaking for anyone else), to talk ONLY of guns is not much different than talking about regulating computer software that allows a thief to use his or her skills to steal your identity and money without addressing the person who commits the crime. The other element is that of mental health. This is a major issue that needs to be addressed. The slogan “see something, say something” is the responsibility of all of us. The other issue is the need for proper security in our schools and elsewhere.

But there is a much broader problem that is often overlooked and discounted and it’s not popular to talk about. It is the systematic effort over the last several decades to discredit our shared values, our faith-based culture, and societal norms that recognize a sense of right and wrong. It’s the breakdown of society and culture that more and more devalues human life. From the dismantling of the family structure to a loss of morals and societal expectations and responsibilities

being taught in our school systems.

French aristocrat, diplomat, and philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville traveled to the United States in the early 1800s and is often quoted as observing “not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the greatness and genius of America. America is great because America is good. If America ever ceases to be good America will cease to be great.

What I’m referring to is not popular to talk about but it needs to be said. A society that loses its standards of right and wrong and its moral compass is doomed to fail. This aspect must be part of the larger discussion if we are to see change.

Local resident retires after 67 years on the job

M

onte Leopardi knows a thing or two about dedication.

The proud U.S. Army veteran spent much of the last 67 years operating a forklift for Peter Lumber Company in Pleasantville, before retiring last year.

Leopardi, 89, attended Saint Peter’s in Pleasantville. Upon arriving home from Army service, he worked odd jobs, starting at Bailey’s Greenhouse in Atlantic City before working at a body shop for a short time.

It was in 1954 when Leopardi filled out an application for the Pleasantville-based Peter Lumber Company.

Starting pay: $1.25 an hour.

Peter Lumber Company was founded in 1932 by Hugh Peter, Sr. Now in its third generation, the family-owned business has maintained its reputation for providing home building supplies and advice to its customers.

The regional company maintains locations in Pleasantville; Hammonton; Medford; Pitman; Millville; Kennett Square, Pa.; and Limerick, Pa. Their railyard and showroom are based out of Pleasantville on Washington Avevue Leopardi was officially hired by Peter Lumber Company on Nov. 1, 1954. He started out as a truck driver and was soon unloading boxcars, a job that required lots of heavy lifting and manpower.

“It wasn’t easy work,” Leopardi said.

For decades, he operated the forklift, loading trailers bound for the company’s other yards.

What makes Leopardi special is his devotion to the position he was hired for. He was always at his job.

“I only missed a week of time, way back,” he said.

Mac Peter, 77, former president of Peter Lumber Company and son of the late founder, Hugh Peter, worked his first summer job at Peter Lumber, afterwards devoting several years to education and serving in the U.S. Army.

Upon returning to his father’s business, he noticed a familiar face.

“I started there again, and Monte was there that whole time; I admired what he was able to do.”

To this day, Peter Lumber Company still receives shipments by freight train.

Shipments are brought in from the West Coast, a 2,800-mile trip. They often arrive jostled and shifted along their journey.

“Things would shift in the doorways, and you had to be very skillful to get the material out with a forklift; Monte was good at that.”

Before utilizing forklifts, all the lumber was placed into and out of each freight car piece by piece. The first thing to come in for lift unloading was plywood, which came into the yard loose loaded, and took at least a day and a half to unload. Today, all shipments are received on flat cars and unloaded quickly.

After a lifetime of devotion and dedication, Leopardi officially retired last year after a 67-year career. Although he no longer operates the forklift, Leopardi still maintains the company’s alarm system out of the Pleasantville showroom and stops in from time-to-time to check in on the staff.

It’s not very often you find someone who is devoted to their job quite

like Monte Leopardi. His dedication and his passion for what he enjoyed are appreciated not only by his former employer, but also by those who have seen his skills at work.

He and his wife, Caroline, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on Friday, May 27.

Village Grande at Little Mill in Egg Harbor Township Holds Memorial Day Car Parade

R

esidents at Village Grande at Little Mill, an over-55 community of 300 homes in Egg Harbor Township, held a car parade around the community to observe Memorial Day and honor the veterans living there.

At 2 p.m. on Memorial Day, the event began with a Color Guard of four Egg Harbor Township policemen present for the playing of “Taps” outside the Village Grand Clubhouse and the singing of “God Bless America.” Then a procession of more than two dozen gaily decorated cars slowly made its way through the community. The procession was led by an Egg Harbor Township police car with its siren blaring and a fire engine from the Bargaintown Volunteer Fire Company Station #1, as well as by EHT Mayor Paul Hodson and Village Grande resident Dave Flanigan, a retired Philadelphia policeman, and veteran. Also in the parade lineup

were EHT motorcycle, police, an ambulance and several Humvees.

The parade cars were decorated in red, white and blue, many with U.S. flags flying, and with horns honking in tribute.

The resident veterans and their families gathered in front of their homes; they waved and saluted as the cars passed by. “The Stars & Stripes Forever,” “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and other patriotic songs were played on a mo-

bile public address system. Before the parade, catered box lunches were available to Village Grande residents for pickup at the Clubhouse; the lunches were also provided to resi-

dent veterans free of charge.

“We wanted to let our veterans know that their service was and is greatly appreciated, and that they have not been forgotten; virus or no virus, we couldn’t let Memorial Day pass without doing something to honor our veterans,” said Sharon Altman, co-chairman of the event.

Val Grossman, the other co-chairman, said, “This is our way of demonstrating that we remember them, that we care, and that we greatly appreciate the sacrifices they made for our country.”

OC Arts Center Presents Jazz Program

T

he Ocean City Arts Center’s presents the season’s closing event in their listening room series, “Hear, Here” featuring A Tribute to the Trumpet Kings with Eddie Morgan & REK’D 4 Jazz on Saturday, June 11 at 4pm. The event will be held at Ocean City Arts Center, 1735 Simpson Avenue, Ocean City, NJ. Mayor Small, who won a four-year term as Mayor of Atlantic City in November 2021, has announced the Greater Atlantic City Youth Association, Inc. (GACYA), an Atlantic City-based 501(c) (3) organization that supports the city’s youth programs, will serve as the beneficiary of the Inaugural Gala, receiving 100% of the event’s proceeds. GACYA will use the proceeds to provide funding to several nonprofit programs in the city that provide support, opportunities, resources, and tools to Atlantic City youth.

Sponsorships for the gala range from $600 (Bronze Sponsor) up to $50,000 (Entertainment Sponsor).
