T

hat’s just what many hope for each June, July, and August. A hot and humid summer that makes the beach the place to be.

But those that have followed my South Jersey forecasts over the last few decades probably know my forecasting cornerstones: ● I never unnecessarily hype the weather, and cringe when others do. ● I despise and see little value in most long range (>14 days) weather forecasts, with the exception of the annual hurricane outlook, which by the way I’ll discuss in next week’s column.

But despite my aforementioned aversion to seasonal forecasts, including those for the summer, let me make a few predictions that I am confident will come true over the next few months. Meteorologists should never make a guarantee when it comes to the inexact science of meteorology,

but I digress.

First, I’m confidently predicting a warmer than average summer, and a more humid than average one as well.

But I’m not preemptively patting myself on the back in making this less bold than it appears forecast. Rather, it’s the reality of climate change.

Here’s an astounding statistic to prove that point. Of the top 10 hottest summers on record at the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) in Egg Harbor Township, where records are kept in South Jersey, 9 of the 10 hottest have occurred since 2005.

The Top 5 hottest summers have all occurred since 2010. So it’s hardly a bold prognostication to predict warmer than average temperatures. The real question is just how far above average this summer will be, and if it will rank in the top 10. 2004, 2009, and 2014 are the only cooler than average summers we’ve seen in South Jersey since the turn of the century. So since 2000, 18 of 21 summers have been warmer than average, and recently, much warmer than average. A cool one is always possible, but increasingly unlikely as each decade progresses.

Then there’s the prediction for a stickier summer, but that isn’t much of a leap of forecasting faith either.

It’s a fact that warmer air holds more moisture. So the warmer a summer is, normally, the more humid it is as well.

That means more bouts with the summer muggies, and likely more sticky and steamy 70-something-degree nights as well. A warmer climate is also a more humid climate, which leads us to our next summer topic: thunderstorms.

Of course, warmth and humidity are the primary drivers for thunderstorms, and higher heat and humidity leads to more opportunities for severe thunderstorms as well. Granted, we may not see a repeat of last year’s unusually frequent and intense tornadoes in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. But severe thunderstorms, and the occasional tornado, also likewise become more common when a warmer and stickier summer is forecast, which is the default prediction most summer these days, including this upcoming one. However, forecasting where and when any severe weather outbreaks take place is something unknown until the day it occurs, and even then, not sooner than a few hours before any storms strike.

Now there are some variables that can throw a wrench in this seemingly simple reasoning behind the summer forecast. A consistently colder Atlantic Ocean, say from frequent upwelling events, could lead to stronger sea-breezes and stronger ocean-induced cooling, at least in Atlantic and Cape May counties. That would in turn cut into temperatures, and lead to closer to average summer temperatures.

And ocean temperatures and upwelling events are things unable to predict in a seasonal forecast.

There’s also the tropical wild card, again the topic of next week’s column.

An active hurricane season, and more importantly a season that sends one or more tropical systems our way, can lead to big rains and a wetter than average summer. And when the ground is very wet, it doesn’t heat up as easily as dry ground. So a wet summer is often a humid one, but not necessarily a hot one.

Another unanswerable summer forecast element is how nice or notso-nice the three big summer holiday weekends will be. The Memorial Day, July Fourth, and Labor Day holiday weekends are ones where we all hope for sun-sational weather. But whether or not perfect weather coincides with those big weekends is up to Mother Nature, not a long term summer forecast.

As always, time will tell what the upcoming summer season will bring, and it’s always best to take things one 7-day forecast at a time. Plus one hurricane forecast for 2022, coming next week.

New island causes controversy

Former boaters’ sanctuary off Forsythe Refuge reserved for the birds

he state Department of Environmental Protection has announced the existence of a new island just south of the Little Egg Inlet and a new rule that prevents public access to it.

Horseshoe Island, a newly formed 100-acre area of land, has been slowly rising out of the water since 2018, but only recently has it remained dry enough year-round to make it suitable for nesting birds. Scientists say they were unable to closely monitor and inspect the site during the COVID-19 pandemic, but estimate that the horseshoe-shaped island may have been high and dry enough to call it an island since late 2020.

Meanwhile the wildlife hasn’t needed an official ruling to decide;

birds have already taken up residence in impressive numbers. Nor have boaters, who have adopted it as a favorite spot to spend peaceful afternoons on the water with friends.

Horseshoe Island, located about 1,000 feet away from Little Beach Island within the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, and a few miles south of Long Beach Island, has become a critical habitat for endangered shorebirds, according to wildlife experts.

The Department of Environmental Protection reports that it's home to 470 least terns, the largest least tern colony in the state, and 80 red knots, which are both federally threatened and state endangered.

Species such as oystercatchers, royal terns, common terns, black skimmers, piping plovers, and even brown pelicans either nest, roost, or forage on Horseshoe Island.

Given the site’s new popularity with important bird species and its status as a favorite location for recreational boaters, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service petitioned the New Jersey Tidelands Resource

Photos by NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife Council in February to approve a management plan that would limit public access to the island. The council approved the plan which means for the next five years, the island will be closed to the public from March 1 through Sept. 20.

The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey, which has partnered with state officials to maintain and monitor the new island, is also assisting with public outreach.

A spokesman acknowledged that boaters looking to explore the island or fish nearby are frustrated at the new strict precautions placed around the island, but stressed that Horseshoe Island is a special case.

“This island is incredibly unique, not just because of its emergence,” said Todd Pover, a senior biologist with the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey. “It’s become a very important habitat despite, its small size, and we need to respect that.”

Pover explained that sandbars (or shoals) rising out of water aren’t anything new, but Horseshoe Island’s special shape and purpose create intrigue.

“We don’t know if it’s anything permanent, but for now, it's an island, and it even shows up on Google Earth,” said Pover.

As Memorial Day approaches, boaters are increasingly angered by the new restrictions because for the past three years, they’ve swam, picnicked, and played on the island.

On weekends in the summers, up

to 30 boats are anchored along the shoal. Jason Bryanson, a boat owner from Port Republic, said his family and friends enjoy this “little secret” every season.

“These birds have all this land to lay their eggs (referring to the Forsythe Wildlife Refuge), but now because a couple birds nested here, we can’t share the island. The whole sandbar is a mile or two long.

I’m pretty sure we can share,” said Bryanson.

The Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey reported at the February tidelands council meeting that boaters release their dogs on the island, which could harm birds or frighten them.

Larry Hajna, a DEP spokesman, defended the management plan.

He noted that boaters can still sail around Horseshoe Island and enjoy it off-season.

“This type of habitat along the New Jersey coast is rare,” said Hajna. “We have to protect the greater good.”

Bryanson, representing the boaters’ side of the issue, believes that boaters have more of a right to the land than birds do.

“This was a family-friendly way to enjoy the nice weather and water,” said Bryanson. “It’s unpatriotic to take away our hangout spot.”

The World War II Honor Roll was unveiled on August 22, 1943. It listed the names of all the men and women from Ocean City who were members of the Armed Forces. by members of the American Legion.

Veterans of World War I placed a floral chain linking together the World War I monument and the World War II Honor Roll.

The invocation was given by Rev. Norman V. Sargent: “On this Memorial Day we are showing our undeviating purpose of carrying high the torch of freedom and justice, unafraid, to the last outpost of civilization.”

Mayor Struble spoke of the long-awaited Allies invasion of Western Europe. He believed it would happen soon and when it did

At noon the flag on the City Hall was raised from half to full staff and the playing of The Star Spangled Banner concluded the ceremony.

The observance of Memorial Day is Ocean City’s oldest and noblest traditions. At its core lies the most basic of the beliefs on which our country was founded: freedom is so precious it is worth the price of our lives to preserve it.

Honoring Old Glory this Memorial Day, the right way

W

hen Memorial Day arrives on Monday, May 30, so will the flags.

One by one, Old Glory will spring up on houses in the neighborhood. It can even get competitive as neighbors check on neighbors to see who got their flag out sooner.

But American flags aren’t meant to be a mere spring decorating accessory, especially on Memorial Day. We fly them to honor the men and women who, in the words of President Abraham Lincoln, “gave the last full measure of devotion” to their country.

In keeping with the profound significance of the flag, the United States has a Flag Code, which spells out in precise detail the rules for flying our nation’s colors. First adopted in 1923, it has gone through numerous amendments, the latest in 2017, defining the who, what, where, when, how and why of deploying the American Flag.

On Memorial Day the displaying of the American Flag gets a special protocol, notes Larry Pacentrilli, commander of American Legion Post 469 in Longport.

“The National Flag Code states that on Memorial Day, the flag shall be flown at half-mast until noon, after which time the flag shall be fully raised,” he said. “This symbolic positioning of the flag at half mast during the morning, acknowledges those who gave their lives in the defense of our nation.”

Then at noon the flag is raised high and the focus changes “The raising of the flag symbolizes

Those who pay close attention know that when it comes to the flag, there is a right way and a wrong way of showing your patriotism, however sincere. As past president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 166 in Ocean City, Marie Gilmore has noticed a few flag protocol errors that seem to come up frequently, which she shared with Shore Local News.

When displayed in a group, the American Flag should always be displayed as the tallest flag. It must always fly higher than all others.

In a parade, other flags may be “dipped,” but the American Flag Should never be dipped.

The American Flag, if flown at home, should always be illuminated.

That means that if there is no artificial light source available it should be out in the daytime only.

When it is displayed elsewhere at half-staff, your home flag should have a black ribbon attached to the staff.

The ribbon should be the same width as a red stripe and only as long as a red or white stripe.

The American Flag should never be put on the ground. But if it does touch the ground, despite popular myth, it does not have to be destroyed, If a flag becomes tattered and torn it should be discarded, but in the proper way by burning. Often your local Scout troop or veterans organizations will conduct flag burning ceremonies for the purpose. If it cannot be burned, the field of stars

should be cut from the flag, making it no longer a flag.

The U.S. Flag Code provides a long list of guidelines, including: Do not fly it in inclement weather.

Better to leave it inside if Memorial Day is a washout this year.

You can display a flag on any day you wish, not just on national holidays or to mark a solemn event.

It’s okay to be patriotic at any time.

If you choose to hang your flag vertically in a window or wall, the union or field of blue portion should be on the observer’s upper left The union should be at the peak of the staff if the flag is hung from the side of a building or structure.

When part of a line of march, parade or procession it should either be to the right of the marchers or front and center.

PRP Injections: Shore Physicians Group brings MVP-worthy treatment to Somers Point Views from the Shore

n May 17, the Associated Press reported that Philadelphia Phillies superstar and reigning National League MVP missed a game against the San Diego Padres as he recovers from a platelet-rich plasma injection

in his right elbow.

Harper had the injection Sunday because of a small tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow that limited the slugging right fielder to play only as Philadelphia's designated hitter because his throwing motion was impacted by the tear.

As baseball fans in the area await Bryce's return to outfield, many may be wondering what exactly is a platelet-rich plasma injection and why would a patient choose to receive one.

I sat down with Shore Physicians Group orthopaedic hand surgeon Dr, Jasmine Bauknight and non-operative sports medicine doctor Dr. Steven Cetel to learn more about them, and their benefits to patients. Both Dr. Bauknight and Dr. Cetel are treating patients with platelet-rich plasma injections at the Shore Physicians Group Orthopaedic Division located at 710 Centre Street in Somers Point.

Platelet-rich plasma therapy Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient's own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints. A small amount of blood is drawn from a patient, and then the drawn blood is placed into a device called a centrifuge.

The centrifuge rapidly spins the sample, separating out the other components of the blood from the platelets and concentrating them within the plasma.

Dr Bauknight explains, "The platelets release small healing factors to damaged tissue. It can be an effective for tennis elbow, golf elbow, tendonitis, other tendon issues and joint arthritis. My patients who were suffering from tennis elbow have had success with it. PRP therapy can be useful when other options have not worked, and if successful it can be a way for a patient to prevent or delay surgery."

Dr Cetel added, "Platelet-rich plasma has been shown to be highly effective in acute tendon injuries more so then chronic injuries. High level athletes have been using Platelet-rich plasma at much higher rates over the past few years due to the ability to

avoid surgery and get back to play sooner."

Baseball fans who are following the news on Harper's recovery may be asking themselves why is it taking so long for him to get back in right field. The reality is that while PRP can be effective, it is not a quick fix or instant cure.

"I want people to understand that PRP therapy is not a short term pain reliever like a cortisone shot," said Dr Bauknight. "PRP a long-term healing process. It takes time, as the tissue is repairing itself.

For example, patient who receive an injection in their Achillies tendon can expect to be sore for up to a week, and maximum improvement can take several weeks to months, although benefits can last for several months to years."

Dr Cetel echoed this sentiment by stating, "It is not an immediate fix and the injury has to heal - but PRP and physical therapy can get you back sooner. The timeless magic of pinball

hen I was a kid, one of my favorite places to visit was the arcade.

Even today, every time I walk into Jilly’s Arcade on the Ocean City Boardwalk, that nostalgic feeling comes back every time. The sound of kids’ laughter fills the air as you hear the “clink” of the air hockey table, win a perfect game at Skee-Ball and listen to the celebratory cheers rain down from the Cruisin’ auto races.

One of my favorite arcade games is still in existence: the Medieval Madness pinball machine. This game has it all. The original machine, designed by the Williams gaming company, was unveiled in 1997 and is revered as one of the highest-ranked pinball

machines by gaming enthusiasts.

From the animated castle and motorized drawbridge, to trolls that will “block” you from entering the castle, this game has it all. To this day, I find myself reminiscing about the game’s featured music.

Pinball is a widely popular arcade game. The objective is to score as many points as possible within three rounds. You use the flippers on the left and right sides of the board to shoot the ball and hit your intended target. At the end of each game, you have a small chance at winning a free game by matching the last two numbers of your total score with the numbers that appear on the board.

Pinball’s earliest origins come from a variety of outdoor games that utilized rolling balls or stones on a grass course, such as bocce or bowls, and, eventually, ground billiards games.

One of the earliest tabletop versions of the game was invented in France during the reign of Louis XIV, which would eventually become a standardized version of bagatelle.

Did you know that the first coin-operated machines were known as “marble games?” David Gottlieb’s Baffle Ball was the first pinball machine to achieve success.

Each machine sold for $17.50, and for one penny, the game would dispense anywhere from five to seven marbles.

With the introduction of electrification, more companies started manufacturing machines with solenoid, allowing the ball to propel out of a bonus hole.

Here's an interesting fact: flippers weren’t introduced to pinball until 1947. Humpty Dumpty was the first machine to include player-controlled flippers, allowing the ball to stay in play longer. Not only can players increase their score, but it can be a great test of skill.

For many years, the pinball machine was banned in several cities across the United States. New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia originally prohibited the game under the assumption that children were being robbed of their hard-earned change.

Large-scale raids were launched throughout the city, with machines ultimately being destroyed by sledgehammer.

The ban stayed in place until 1976 when Roger Sharpe stood before a

Manhattan courtroom and testified that pinball was a game of skill and not a game of chance.

He played one of two machines and called out precisely what he was aiming for and proceeded to hit his intended target. It was after this move that committee members voted to lift the ban once and for all.

While many cities and small towns kept similar bans through the 1970s, Kokomo, Ind., lifted its ordinance on pinball machines in 2016. A similar ban in New Jersey took effect in 1942 and lasted several decades.

As technology has advanced, so has the modern-day look of the pinball machine. The introduction of microprocessors and circuit boards in the 1970s brought this popular arcade game into the age of electronic

gaming.

Even with the advent of video games and newer, more exciting arcade games, there is something about pinball that remains fascinating. It is not only a part of our childhood, but remains a vital part of society today, with tournaments and leagues hosted by the IFPA (International Flipper Pinball Association).

This year, 64 of the top pinball wizards in the world will compete for glory in the World Pinball Championship, in Fort Myers, Fla., May 26-29.

Whether you are walking around the Showboat Hotel with your Lucky Snake card or find yourself on the Ocean City Boardwalk with a pocket full of loose change, I hope you find some time this summer to relive this classic arcade game and pass along your enjoyment to others for a lifetime of lasting memories.

Lucy reopens after nine months of closure She is still under wraps for repairs

L

ucy the Elephant, America’s Oldest Roadside Attraction, has been closed and hidden behind containment scaffolding since September 2021 when work began. Over the course of several months, scaffolding was erected around Lucy. Next, her rusted metal skin was removed, and any rotted wood sheathing was repaired or replaced. As this work progressed, a waterproofing layer was added; and finally, her new metal skin was attached.

The new metal is an alloy called Monel 400 which is made of primarily nickel and copper. The last step will be to paint Lucy with a three-layer coating of Acrymax and at 141 years old, the elephant will look brand new! “This has been an enormous financial undertaking” said Richard Helfant, Executive Director of the Save Lucy Committee. “We are so fortunate to have been awarded a grant from the Preserve NJ Preservation Fund administered by the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Save America’s Treasures Grant program administered by the National Park Service. Originally estimated at $1.4 million; costs have skyrocketed to more than $2 million.”

The “Lucy’s Life Preserver” campaign is seeking out 800 people to donate $1000; similar to what was done

back in 1970 when Lucy was minutes away from the wrecking ball. “Back in 1970, Ed & Sylvia Carpenter, along with Josephine Harron and their brand-new Save Lucy Committee, convinced 62 people to donate $1000; the funding necessary to move Lucy from Cedar Grove Avenue to her new home on Decatur Ave; now proudly known as 1 Lucy Plaza. “The people in our community are very generous and we feel confident there are enough who will want to come to Lucy’s aid at this critical time in her storied life”.

Donors who pledge $1000 or more will have their name inscribed on a permanent bronze plaque that will be displayed at Lucy, receive a gold plated “Lucy’s Life Preserver” commemorative pin, and will receive life membership into the “Friends of Lucy”. Lucy stands today as a National Historic Landmark, because of the nickels, dimes, and dollars that have been donated over the years”. All donations to Lucy are tax deductible.

Art in the Park comes back to Somers Point

T

he Somers Point Arts Commission is presenting Art in the Park on June 25, 2022, from 10am to 4pm at JF Kennedy Park on Broadway overlooking Great Egg Harbor Bay. The day-long event features professional and amateur painters, sculptors and photographers. Art in the Park accepts traditional work in the following categories: oil/acrylic, drawing/pastels, watercolor, handpulled prints, mixed media/collage, photography and sculpture.

Participation is $30 and interested artists can obtain an application by contacting somersptar ts@ gmail.com. All applications must be received by June 24.

Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place, along with Honorable Mention ribbons, to painters, sculptors, and photographers.

Attendees at the event will also have a chance to “judge” a piece of art by voting for the popular People’s Choice Award. Award donors include Passion Vines Wine & Spirit Company, The Clam Bar, The Anchorage, Tilton Inn, Two Cents Plain and ERCO Ceilings and Interiors.

Nothfield honors its wounded Veterans

N

orthfield came together May 21 to dedicate Purple Heart Path in honor of military personnel from Northfield who were wounded while serving and defending their country.

The landscaped walking path at Northfield Veterans Park was created with assistance from students at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology, who designed and installed the landscaping and created the sign.

In addition to a sign unveiling and presenting of the colors by Boy Scouts from Troop No. 389 at the

chose that as the headline for this week’s column because I think that’s how a lot of the fans of Philly sports teams feel right now.

The Sixers are out. It’s “getting late…. early” for the Phillies. The Flyers still don’t have a head coach, but then there

are the Eagles. They made a move that appears to have folks excited. 72 holes were not enough to decide a winner at the PGA Championship. Meanwhile, on the local front, the folks at Seaview have opened up their wallets for some bigtime renovations to the Bay Course just in time for the upcoming ShopRite LPGA Classic. And, I want to acknowledge two local crew teams who returned to South Jersey with some hardware from the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia.

sports-only. If you’re looking for my entertainment perspective, check out my other column that’s called “That’s Entertainment”. So, without further ado, here are my extra points this week from the world of sports: ● I’ll begin with the Sixers again, and the NBA in general. As I write this, there’s a report out that the Lakers are still trying to figure out a way to possibly trade for coach Doc Rivers. He has three years left on his contract with Philadelphia though, and like I wrote last week, Daryl Morey has said he doesn’t want Rivers going anywhere, so this again seems like news for the sake of generating news. ● I’ve had some folks ask me who I’m pulling for in the Boston-Miami series, and I answer that “you have to root for the team that took you out right?” It validates the loss, in my opinion. So, I’ll slightly root for the Heat. In the West, I love Steph Curry, and the Warriors are up 3-zip as I write this, so I’d be comfortable with a Golden State-Miami NBA Finals. ● In baseball, the Phillies came off a great road trip, but then could only manage a 2-4 homestand against San Diego and then the Dodgers.

Thankfully, Zack Wheeler was outstanding on May 18th when I was in person to see him go seven innings, striking out nine in a 3-0 win over the Padres. The best part was that the game was a quick 2 hours and 44 minutes. On a school night/work night, that was a real treat as we were up there to celebrate my Dad’s birthday and my girlfriend’s son’s birthday as well. Always nice to get a “W”.

But, I write about how things are “getting early….late”, and by that I mean that the Phillies are 19-22 and 8 games back of the N.L. East leading New York Mets as they begin a series with Atlanta as I write this. To me, this is a critical road trip for the Phillies as they have four at Atlanta followed by three at the Mets before coming back home to start a series with San Francisco on Memorial Day Monday.

In hockey, the Flyers are reportedly going to meet with Barry Trotz about their coaching vacancy. I’d love to see him as the next bench boss, but even if he chooses somewhere else, like Winnipeg, Vegas or Detroit, meeting with Trotz can still be a good thing, as he’s been a head coach with two Metropolitan division teams in Washington and then the Islanders. Again, if Trotz wants to come to Philly, I say hire him tomorrow. But stay tuned.

Eagles fans are definitely locked in on the Birds and their off-season moves as once again, Howie Roseman is showing that the franchise is in “win-now” mode. Since I last wrote, Roseman went out and signed

Remembering S/SGT Bernard I. Friedenberg

World War II As I Saw It, “I stepped off the ramp and sank down into water that was over my head. I’ll never be able to explain how I swam in with the load I was carrying, but I did. Totally exhausted, I made it to the beach and threw myself onto the sand, trying to catch my breath. Then my work began. When I lifted my head, I saw another soldier lying alongside me. I said something to him and he moaned. I looked down and saw that the man’s leg was missing from the knee down. Every place I looked I saw dead and wounded bodies.

I gave the man alongside me first aid

and all the time I was doing this, I could hear men hollering, “Medic” from every direction. I moved on to the next casualty and then the next and the next and the next. There was no end to them. Enemy shells were exploding all around me; the bullets kept whizzing around my head, but I didn’t feel scared. I was too busy to even think about being scared.”

I first met Bernie in the mid 1970’s. I was working at a real estate office in Margate when he walked in and started chatting with the Broker. He had a calm and gentlemanly demeanor; someone with whom anyone could have an easy conversation. I remember the Broker had to take a call so Bernie I began talking. He told me he was a private pilot and my ears perked up because I was, and still am, an avid aviation enthusiast. The conversation shifted from real estate to flying until the Broker returned from his phone call. When Bernie was saying his goodbyes, he looked over to me and casually asked if I would like to go up with him one day. That is when our friendship

began. Bernie would stop by the office and ask me if I was free for a flight. We would drive to Bader Field in Atlantic City where he kept his aircraft and go up.

As John Gillespie Magee Jr. wrote in his poem, High Flight, we “slipped the surly bonds of Earth and danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings.” I say this because it is above our Earth that Bernie opened up to me about some of his war memories. He had no destination; no time restraints, no demands. The only limitation was the amount of fuel on board. I remember thinking, I had put my life in the hands of someone I hardly knew, not yet aware of how many others had put their lives in his hands in far worse and gruesome conditions. I listened quietly to his stories accompanied by the steady drum of the engine realizing I was getting a rare glimpse inside the memories of Bernie Friedenberg, a citizen soldier. At times, his voice would crack or he would be distracted by the demands of a pilot and all too soon for me, we were on the ground. We were back in the present.

Bernie wrote, “I felt a wave of fatigue wash over me. I thought I was going to pass out. I sat down on a tree stump in front of the farmhouse and started to shake uncontrollably. I tried to stop but I couldn’t. This was the first time in my life that my body had let me down. I didn’t want to leave my men, but they insisted I hop a ride (in the truck) as I was totally exhausted. I went to the back of the truck and rode on the tailgate. As the Germans retreat-

ed, they placed land mines in the road.

Sure enough the truck I was riding in hit one. It was an anti-tank mine and the explosion was tremendous. It blew me off the tailgate and into a ditch.

When I regained consciousness, I was about fifteen feet away from the burning truck and I was the only survivor.

Everyone else had been killed.”

As the years rolled by and I moved on in my career, I would see Bernie, a Commander of the Jewish War Veterans, on Memorial Weekend handing out red poppies in front of Casel’s Supermarket in Margate and we would reunite. We would also meet each other at the Veterans’ Cemetery in the Atlantic County Park at Estell Manor during the annual ceremonies and catch up on our respective lives. Bernie would be wearing his military uniform and all of his medals with pride. At the end of the ceremonies, the bugler would play Taps. Bernie would snap to attention and hold the salute until the last note.

He was not the only veteran fighting to maintain their composure.

Bernie would occasionally mention his nightmares, a fact that was also

shared with me by his family. In his book, he wrote about one experience that haunted him. It was December 1944 in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge. A German machine gunner opened fire on six men attempting to cross a field, wounding all six of them. Bernie got within twenty yards of them when he came under fire from the machine gun. As soon as he raised his head the gun opened up on him again. Bullets were whizzing above his head and making puffs in the snow all around him. Bernie played dead. He laid in the snow for six hours listening to the cries, prayers and moans for help from the wounded soldiers until they all eventually went silent. When it finally got dark, Bernie got up realizing that he was left for dead and checked on the wounded men one by one.

They had all perished.

Among other memories, this haunted him the most. Bernie couldn’t help the feeling that he failed them. He carried this with him for the rest of his life as well as the many other experiences that Bernie encountered. But in retrospect, Bernie also thought about all the lives he saved; all the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren that were born because of his actions.

He also thought about all of the wives and children who did not suffer a loss because of his courage and selfless dedication to duty.

After Bernie’s passing in 2018, I reflected on the time we spent together as well as the contents of his autobiography and came away with how special our time was. How he impacted my life from the time he first came into the real estate office to the last few minutes we spent together. Bernie and other veterans like him walked among us in anonymity, many not sharing the atrocities they witnessed nor the heroic actions they took to preserve our

freedoms.

Bernie included a quote from Edmund Burke in his book. It read “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.”

Staff Sergeant Friedenberg was awarded two Silver Stars, two bronze stars and two Purple Hearts.

It's hard to imagine that when attempting to enlist in the Navy he was rejected due to poor eyesight. The Army also rejected him. But Bernie persisted; went back every week until he was finally accepted and the rest is history, literally.

The Bernie Friedenberg World War II Memorial is scheduled to be unveiled and dedicated on June 6, 2023 in

O’Donnell Park in Atlantic City. The statue will be a nine-foot likeness of Bernie tending to a wounded soldier on Omaha Beach during D-Day, June 6, 1944.

Black Bean Hummus ●

2 cans of black beans (rinsed and drained)

1 small onion, diced 1/2 cup green pepper, diced ● 3 cloves garlic, minced ● 2 tbsp ground cumin ● 1 1/2 tsp. olive oil ● 2 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro ● 1/4 cup vegetable broth Drain and rinse black beans if using canned beans. Place olive oil in a skillet set over medium-high heat.

Add onions, peppers and garlic and sauté for about three minutes until vegetables are fragrant and starting to brown slightly. Add cumin, stir well, reduce heat to medium, and cook for another ten minutes. Place beans in the food processor and pulse several times. Add vegetable mixture and pulse a few more times. Add vegetable broth in small batches to thin the dip to desired consistency. Garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve imme● ●

Maverick returns in expected summer blockbuster That's Entertainment

or most in our area, Memorial Day weekend means spending time on the beach, on your boat, on the water, and in the local restaurants and bars.

Along with those usual activities, Memorial Day weekend also is one of

those “tent-pole” dates where the big movie studios put out what they hope will be a major release.

Well, Paramount Pictures is hoping that “Top Gun: Maverick” is the movie that brings the masses back to the actual movie theater!

“Top Gun: Maverick” finished production in 2020 but its release was delayed for two years because of the pandemic. Theater owners are keeping their fingers crossed that Tom Cruise’s

million-watt smile and his commitment to doing his own stunts — no matter the cost or the fact that he will turn 60 in July — will bring moviegoers back to theaters for what they hope will be a long and fruitful summer.

Even as I sat down to write this column, I saw someone on social media post about how much they hate Tom Cruise. I’m sorry, but to me, he’s Hollywood’s last real movie star. It’s been 30 years since the original “Top Gun” made Cruise a box-office behemoth, and he has basically stayed there since, outlasting his contemporaries.

He’s the last remaining global star who still only makes movies for movie theaters. He hasn’t ventured into streaming. He hasn’t Top Gun: Maverick (May 27th) in theaters signed up for a limited series. He hasn’t started his own te“Mission Impossible” movie. Plus, the actor Gaten Matarazzo has ties to the area as he went to Pinelands Regional HIgh School in Tuckerton and his grandpa runs Matarazzo’s Pizza - Slice of Naples, located at 900 West White Horse Pike in Egg Harbor City. Bottom line, it’s been over 1,000 days since the last season of “Stranger Things” dropped on July 4th weekend in 2019, so I can’t wait to see what Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Will, Mike, Lucas, Joyce and Hopper are up to when the new season drops!

Stranger Things 4 (May 27th) on Netflix already out. “Jurassic World: Dominion” is out June 10th. That’s just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Bottom line, I think It’s going to be a great summer for movies.

On TV and streaming, I finally had the opportunity to watch “Wandavision” on Disney Plus since I last wrote.

Now, I’m not the world’s biggest MCU fan, but I certainly enjoyed the performances of Elizabeth Olsen & Paul Bettany in the lead roles. Kathryn Hahn & Kat Dennings were outstanding in supporting roles. If anything Marvel is your thing, I would certainly recommend “Wandavision”.

My girlfriend and I also decided to watch “Pam & Tommy” on Hulu.

First off, I should say the eight-episode dark comedy is intended for mature audiences only. With that said, it was pretty fascinating to watch a dramatization of a time before anyone knew what the internet was capable of. For example, I forgot that AltaVista was the original search engine that everyone used way before anyone knew what Google was. What’s funny is, if you ask the youth of today, they’ll ask you what Google is and usually answer “is that like Siri?”

Before I close, I do want to acknowledge that by the time you read this, season 4 of “Stranger Things” will have finally dropped on Netflix. Well, part one of Season 4. The plan is to release

Local Luminaries program shines light on community leaders

ocal Luminaries is a monthly series created in 2019 to shine light on local community members making a difference. The Leadership Studio sponsored event is hosted by Christian Correa and features a different topic of discussion along with new panel members every month. From topics such as careers in the arts to addiction and recovery, local luminaries provide a platform for community members to discuss the hard topics in a safe environment.

“Local Luminaries was a diverse panel of inspiring individuals who each shared experiences that made everyone in attendance think, laugh, and even cry,” explains Randi Meekins, local artist and Local Luminaries attendee.

The idea for Local Luminaries was inspired by a college program that invited students to travel to new locations, interviewing people about their lives and what inspires them. Correa, who was a participant in that colllege program, aims to flip that concept on

its head by bringing inspiring people together in one room.

“When you live here, your role models don’t necessarily live here,” explains Correa. “It’s easy to notice the athletes and rockstars but people in the community are doing meaningful things and important work for our community.”

Local Luminaries puts the spotlight on those people. The Leadership Studio on Tennessee Avenue in Atlantic City is home to the monthly panel, along with several other community-focused programs including yoga for recovery and programs for moms and babies. The Leadership Studio exists with an intention to advance the physical, energetic, economic, and spiritual growth of Atlantic City’s residents through programming and partnerships.The Local Luminaries series is a significant contribution to that mission, offering an opportunity for education, growth, and expansion in our community.

“I want people who are in the area to be able to go somewhere where they can learn,” shares Correa about the Local Luminaries discussion panels.

This month’s topic focused on Community Development Corporations or CDCs. These local, neighborhood driven organizations offer opportunities for economic development, social services, community safety, and civic pride. The CDC panel on May 25th invited leaders from the four Atlantic City CDC’s to come together in order to inform, educate,

and inspire. Panel members included Elizabeth Terenick (Chelsea CDC), Michael Cagno (Duckdown CDC), Victor Moreno (Inlet CDC), and Jim Rutala of Rutala Associates.

The evening centered on celebrating these individuals for their community efforts as well as educating attendees about CDCs, how they work, what they offer, and how to get involved.

On June 22nd, the next Local Luminaries event will take place at The Leadership Studio.

Next month’s topic will center around healthy eating and food accessibility.

“There is so much media around Atlantic City that holds negative connotations without any willingness to jump in and fix things,” shares Correa.

t’s almost June and after months and months of shivering and standing by the fire, summer is knocking at the door. Thousands will flock to the beach this Memorial Day weekend looking for delicious treats to fuel their fun.

Memorial Day tends to inspire traditional foods like hot dogs, funnel cakes, and barbeque chicken, but mixing things up will brighten up your party and crown you as the “host with the most.” Here are three Memorial Weekend recipes that’ll pop with seasonal bliss and summery flavors:

½ cup of granulated sugar 3 cups of heavy cream ● 1 stick of butter, softened ● 4 teaspoons of baking powder ● 2 pints of strawberries, cleaned and cut in halves ● ½ cup of raw sugar ● ½ cup of water ● 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract Use a stand mixer to combine granulated sugar, butter, 1 and a half cup of heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Mix on medium speed until the wet ingredients are thoroughly combined.

In a large bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.

Slowly add dry ingredients with the wet ingredients in batches, mixing on low speed. Continue until evenly mixed and the batter is thick and crumbly. Do not overwork the dough!

Cover and let the dough rest overnight. ‘ After the dough has rested for at least eight hours, use a rolling pin to roll out the dough into a rectangle, 8 inches by 5 inches. Stamp out biscuits using a cookie cutter or circular mold and place each biscuit on a baking sheet. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Brush each biscuit with melted butter and place in the oven for 20 minutes.

Pour remaining heavy cream into a clean stand mixer. Add ¼ cup of raw sugar and mix on high for five minutes, until the cream makes stiff peaks. Place in an icing bag and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Clean and cut strawberries and put them in a saucepan along with ¼ cup of raw sugar and water. Cook ● ●

Add feta, mint leaves and onion.

Watermelon Feta Salad

Ingredients: ● Half of a large watermelon, seedless

Ingredients: ● 1 pound of extra large shrimp, cleaned and deveined ● 8 cloves of garlic, crushed ● 2 teaspoons of chopped Mexican cilantro ● ½ large yellow onion, diced ● 4 tablespoons of dry white wine ● 2 tablespoons of lime juice ● Salt ● Pepper In a ziploc bag or tupperware container, add uncooked shrimp, garlic, onion, cilantro, white wine, lime juice and salt and pepper. Rub the marinade over the shrimp and close the container, letting rest for 2 hours before serving.

Press shrimp onto a skewer (five at a time) and grill over medium heat, five to seven minutes. Baste with the leftover marinade. Ready to eat!

Every body is a beach body Moms Vibe:

ummer is for the living.

As you get ready to pull out the swimsuits this weekend for the unofficial start of summer, remember that your body is already beach worthy. Every body is a beach body. No matter how much quarantine weight you did or didn’t gain or how many stretch marks decorate your tummy, your body is perfect.

The age of crash diets, body shaming, and lack of self worth are behind us. This is a new age where as women, we choose to empower ourselves and each other to “just wear the suit.” Just wear the bathing suit, the outfit, the tank top, the shorts. It’s hot and you deserve to have the sunrays kiss your skin as much as anybody else. You deserve to be in the pictures with

your children and enjoying all that summer has to offer.

Over the years, I’ve worn a wide

range of different sizes, have been through multiple changes in my body, and have worn countless bathing suit styles. In each stage of my life, the most comfortable bathing suit I’ve worn has nothing to do with how high the waistband is, how much skin it covers, or the current seasonal style. The most comfortable bathing suit I’ve ever put on wasn’t about the bathing suit itself but everything to do with how I viewed myself. When I stopped worrying about what other people think and poured my energy into enjoying my summer, that’s when I felt the most beautiful. Beauty comes from within. When you let go of the fear, shame, and self doubt, you are able to set yourself free to become the most authentic version of yourself.

We made it through another winter, beat the seasonal mood swings, and have stepped into Summer

2022. Now is the time. The only person worried about what your body looks like is YOU. Everyone else is too worried about their own bodies, lives, and troubles. So leave the worry behind, put on the suit, and step out this summer in confidence.

I’ll leave you with this poem that I bring out each year as a reminder that we are so much more than our physical bodies.

Celebrate World Bee Day by Creating a Garden Buzzing with Pollinators Let It Grow

appy Belated World Bee Day! No need to worry if you missed the special day, you can still commemorate it by planting a pollinator garden. Back in 2016, the Republic of Slovenia proposed to celebrate World Bee Day to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The following year, the UN General assembly unanimously proclaimed May 20 as World Bee Day to be celebrated each year. According to the fao.org website, observing the day raises “awareness on the essential role bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy, and on the many challenges they face today.” This year’s theme

was “Bee Engaged: Celebrating the diversity of bees and beekeeping systems.” The FAO featured the event virtually to “raise awareness on the importance of the wide variety of bees and sustainable beekeeping systems, the threats and challenges they face and their contributions to livelihoods and food systems.”

Why not join the celebration by planting a pollinator garden?

When planning your pollinator garden, keep in mind that pollinators will need a variety of plants that produce nectar and pollen during spring, summer, and fall. Serviceberry trees and shrubs are among the first trees to bloom, providing bees with an early source of nectar and pollen. They also provide visual interest in all four seasons, making it an attractive choice for your landscape. Pussy willows are the very picture of spring and have stamens loaded with pollen. I often insert cut branches of pussy willows in the center of spring container arrangements. Fresh healthy cuttings will sprout in the soil. Once you see

new leaves forming, it will probably be time to change out your spring flowers for summer ones. Plant the pussy willows in your garden and you will have a ready supply for the following spring. Of course, the multitude of early spring-flowering bulbs such as winter aconite, scilla, snowdrops, and grape hyacinths will provide beauty to your garden and will be a welcome sight to bees and other early pollinators. As spring gives way to summer, certain plants will succumb to the heat and new flowers will need

to take their place. Once all fear of frost is gone, you can plant summer bloomers that will nourish hungry bees and butterflies.

Perennials like salvia, bee balm (monarda), coneflowers (echinacea), anise hyssop (Agastache), and catmint will have your garden buzzing with joy. When fall arrives, be sure to provide your pollinators with flowers that will carry them through the season.

Goldenrod, purple asters, sedum autumn joy, milkweed, Joe Pye weed, and sunflowers will sustain pollinators through fall.

Though we are focusing on bees as pollinators, we love attracting butterflies to the garden as well. Keep in mind that while adult butterflies are interested in a variety of flowers for themselves, when it comes to laying eggs, they look for specific plants to host their caterpillar babies. If you want to create a habitat for them, plant the correct host plants in your pollinator garden. Most of us know that milkweed is the only host plant for monarch butterfly caterpillars, but other butterfly caterpillars depend

The casino-hotel boasts 24-hour gaming on Atlantic City’s famed Boardwalk. With just under 2,400 hotel rooms, a 200,000-square-foot entertainment complex known as “The Quarter”, and countless restaurants, shops, bars, and even an IMAX theatre, Tropicana is expanding its offerings by

introducing eight new entertainment venues later this year.

by Caesars Entertainment, and the new developments are part of the group’s commitment to invest $400 million into its Atlantic City resorts (which also include Caesars Atlantic City and Harrah’s Resort Atlantic City).

“We are excited to double-down on our commitment to the Atlantic City market by raising the bar this year, introducing new dining, entertainment, and gaming experiences to our guests at Tropicana Atlantic City,” explained John Koster, Regional President for Caesars Entertainment’s Eastern Division.

On the list of new restaurants is

Wild Honey Smokehouse and Tavern, which opened just recently. Their menu focuses on four main indulgences: beer, BBQ, bourbon, and music.

They serve up a variety of housesmoked BBQ and American comfort foods, all infused with their special ingredient, wild honey. Featuring food from all your favorite BBQ destinations, their plates are sure to satisfy your tastebuds whatever your preferred style. From Texas to South Carolina, they have all the bases covered.

A quick glance at the menu and several dishes instantly stand out, including the “Big Ass biscuit and cornbread combo”, brisket sandwich, and the “Big West Texas Beef Rib 12-Hour Smoke Falling off the Bone”. Even the

name is a mouthful. For the non-meat eaters like myself, go for the meatless crispy “chicken” sandwich, served with their secret sauce. Then, wash it all down with one of their double-barrel smoked cocktails or a draft cold beer, whilst listening to live music.

Journey out to the Far East at Ossu Japanese Tavern, which features contemporary small plates, yakitori (meat skewers), sushi, and more. Set to open this coming Memorial Day Weekend, you will want to sample some of their expertly curated dishes. Their small plates include Okonomiyaki fries, Kani (crab) croquettes, gyoza, and even tuna poke nachos. The yakitori options comprise pork belly, chicken, wagyu sirloin, and more. They also have a selection of classic and contemporary ramen dishes, sushi rolls, and fresh fish. Accompanied by a signature cocktail or glass of sake, and you are in for a special night.

Straight out of the Midwest, Hash House A Go Go serves twisted farm food and crafted cocktails and has been doing so for more than two decades. A must try is Andy’s World Famous Sage Fried Chicken, which is their most popular meal. Their farm fresh free range chicken breast is perfectly fried in cornstarch, fresh sage, corn flakes, and a house spice blend, then served with waffles, smoked bacon, market tomato, and a fresh rosemary garnish. For the sweet tooth, try the HH Big O’ Pancakes. Not for the faint of heart, these “steeringwheel-of-a-tractor” sized pancakes are traditionally served with fresh banana, brown sugar, farm butter, and maple syrup. They also have snickers, red velvet, butterscotch almond, and buttermilk flavors.

Taking inspiration from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s, “This Side of Paradise”, The Purple Zebra daiquiri bar has 7 different flavors which patrons can mix and match to create their own unique taste. The funky, fantastical wonderland-like design will have you feeling as though they are in a hallucinogenic state. Be sure to try their most popular drink, the “Peachy Keen.”

Gin Rickey will be your new favorite, fun hangout spot. This live music sing-along bar will feature dueling pianos and be located in The Quarter.

The space will be open 7 days a week with nightly live performances, and the dueling pianos will be featured Thursday-Sunday.

be able to enjoy large format drinks, shareable food, and games such as ping pong, cornhole, and bowling seven nights a week. They will feature regular 21+ nights for a more sophisticated (or not) vibe. The space is set to debut in The Quarter this fall.

Il Verdi is one of the top overall restaurants in Atlantic City, offering delicious and authentic Italian cuisine for over 40 years at the Tropicana. With such a strong and consistent reputation, the restaurant is branching out to offer an incredible beachfront location with design influence from the Amalfi region of Italy and stunning ocean views. cially “summer” yet on the calendar, but for all of us here in South Jersey, it’s SUMMER!! The streets along the shore were barren and empty only a couple of weeks ago. Now they are once again filled with vacationers and even locals trying to find a place to park as they make their way with chairs, buckets, towels and tanning lotion to place their toes in the warm sand and salty ocean once again.

There are thousands upon thousands of people who spend their hard earned money to travel to our region for one or two weeks a year to experience what many of us have in our own backyard and can take for granted. In fact, you may be one of those thousands.

he Ocean City Beach Patrol will be guarding the following beaches for the 2022 Memorial Day Weekend. Beaches are guarded from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekends and holidays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Beginning Saturday, May 28, and continuing through Wednesday, June 1, the following beaches will be guarded: ● St. Charles ● Brighton ● 8th Street ● 9th Street ● 10th Street ● 11th Street ● 12th Street ● 26th Street ● 34th Street ● 58th Street Additional beaches will be added throughout June until the beach patrol reaches full staffing.

The Ocean City Beach Patrol's annual tryout for new lifeguards will be held on June 4, 2022. In the event of inclement weather, the tryout would be pushed to June 5.

This year's competitive test will include a 500-meter ocean swim, a 300-meter ocean paddleboard, a one-half-mile run, a 500-meter erg and a surf dash. All candidates also must complete an interview.

Candidates must be at least 16 years old and complete a physical examination before the tryout. All applicants are encouraged to start training now. Rookie school clinics for applicants will be held May 28, May 30, May 31, June 1 and June 2.

ummer starts Memorial Day weekend for the beach crowd...so Nashville North is hosting "Surf's Up". This show will feature the works of two very talented artists Tim Faherty and Tim Smith. Tim Smith is a self-taught con-

temporary artist from Southern New Jersey. He has worked to develop his style over the past few years, which continues to evolve with each piece he creates. Since his start as a realist painter, his style has morphed into what is known as “New Pop Realism” or “Spontaneous Realism”.

His subject matter focuses primarily on the celebrities, musicians, and other iconic figures who have impacted his life. His goal is to capture the emotion and current state of the subject using vibrant colors–both warm and cool—in order to better captivate the viewer. Working primarily in pastels and oils, Tim tries to capture the spirit of coastal South Jersey. When he’s not painting, Tim can often be found kayaking or paddle boarding in the same places he loves to paint.

He lives in Upper Township with his wife, Gayle, a retired teacher and watercolor artist. They have two adult daughters, Katie and Erin.

ach real estate transaction comes with its own set of challenges; but buying and selling a home at the same time compounds these challenges.

The addition of time constraints and another set of buyers and sellers increases the need for appropriate expectations, patience, and perseverance. Proper planning and preparation is key to a successful conclusion for both transactions.

Planning Ahead You have heard people say, “The destination is not as important as the journey.” However, in the case of buying and selling a home at the same time, in many ways the opposite is true. It is important for you to keep the end goal in mind while at the same time detaching a bit from the process. There will no doubt be

bumps in the road; the less you focus on those the better.

Building a great team will help you put together a successful plan for your sale and purchase. What follows is a list of the professionals you will be working with. Communicate with them early and often to keep your process moving toward the finish line.

Working With Your Real Estate Agent Your real estate agent can help you develop a clear idea of your needs and expectations for the process. Everything will be time-sensitive, but if you are under severe time pressure, it is important to be clear about your timeline.

If your purchase will be out of the area, in another market, or out of state, allow your agent to refer you to a qualified agent in the new area where you will be relocating. Their coordination and cooperation will be vital to the smooth running of the process.

This will create increased buyer interest and activity in your home and it will, in most cases, get closer to or above asking price. In some cases, depending on your specific home and location, you may get offers above your asking price and get top-dollar for your home.

Talk to your real estate agent about a price that is fair, but also encourages buyer interest and enthusiasm.

Searching for Your New Home You will want to keep your timeline in mind when searching for your new home. That may mean that you will need to put more time into your home search or be a bit more flexible in your requirements. If you are looking to sell and buy your dream home, you may want to put in place a longer process, with a stopover into a short-term rental property, to buy you some extra time.

Working With Your Lender You will need to spend time talking with your lender about how your financing will work when you are freeing up money from the sale of your current home to purchase your new one. Depending on your financial situation, you may need to close on your current home before initiating financing on your next home, or you may need to qualify for both mortgages simultaneously.

There are loan products available that can help you obtain the equity in your current home in order to purchase your new home, and then pay the temporary bridge loan off when you close. While this may make the transition possible, it can also put you in a bind if the sale of your current home falls through or is delayed.

Talk with your lender about your risk tolerance in this regard, and find out which option will work best for you.

Working With Your Title Company Depending on the location of the two properties, you may be able to close using the same title company on your sale and your purchase.

Alternatively, you may be able to conduct closing by having the closing documents sent to you by mail to be signed and notarized for your convenience.

Working With Your Movers Unlike a standard move, you may need to have your household goods packed and stored for a while before they arrive at your new home. You may need to have a portion of your items stored and a portion of your items moved to a short-term rental.

Talk to your movers about your options so they can help you determine the most cost-effective and most efficient way of facilitating the particulars of your move.

Short-term Lease Options You may have visions of a same-day sale and purchase. While this does happen, it requires everything to proceed perfectly with the buyers and sellers on both sides of two different transactions, as well as with both lenders involved. Just in case this does not occur, it is a smart idea to put a backup plan in place.

If you need more time between closings, you may want to rent month to month or stay in a short-term rental that is furnished while your belongings are stored until your new home is ready for occupancy.

Rent Back Your Current Home If you know when your new home will be ready, it may be possible to negotiate a rent-back on your current home. This can be done as a courtesy from the buyers of your home for a period of one day, one week, one month or for several months, depending on your needs and the flexibility and preferences of the buyers who are purchasing your home.

The Benefits of Preplanning Your Funeral, part 5

s I continue this series on preplanning funerals, keep in mind that each step you take makes life easier for your loved ones. The next step, and in my opinion, the biggest reason to prearrange in the first place, which is to prefund your prearrangement.

Making a payment on your funeral arrangements freezes the costs and prepares for a possible Medicaid situation.

I first want to talk about two funding options that are not the best way to go. The first is a burial trust or burial CD through a bank.

Basically, you go to a bank with a certain amount of money and you either place that money in an account or CD with the intent that this money is meant for your funeral services.

This is not the best option because you can always get to it to spend it on something else. It is considered and asset so if you need to qualify for Medicaid and it will count against you.

The other option that a lot of people use is personal life insurance.

Most life insurance mentions the funeral expenses as a benefit. Now I am not saying that life insurance is a bad investment if you are trying to make sure your kids can afford to go to school or to pay off the loan to the bank for your house if you suddenly pass away. However, if the life insurance policy is being bought solely with the intention that it is to be used to pay your funeral expenses, then (in my professional opinion) it is a poor investment. Why? Because when you take out a regular personal life insurance policy you are not getting the benefit of freezing the costs of the funeral. Yes, you are making sure some money is set aside for your funeral services, but this money can be liquidated at any time due to a Medicaid spend down and again it does not freeze your funeral costs, that would happen if you went through a reputable funeral home.

Writer brings hope and healing during pandemic

o you ever find yourself at a loss for words? Do you ever experience something so tragic or beautiful or cruel that you are left speechless?

Janet Mueller of Original Writings

by Jm strives to put words to the difficult parts of life in order to help people work through difficult moments in their lives.

Mueller has always been drawn to words. In high school, her English teacher Mr. Emra challenged her class to keep a daily journal for the year. At the end of the year, he asked his students to title their journal. Mueller called her “the Sound of Silence.” Although her peers mocked her for naming her entries after a popular song, Mueller defended her choice with these words, “the words are loud and quiet at the same time.”

After graduating from high school in Lake Hiawatha, Mueller started a band and performed original songs in New York and Philadelphia. She and her bandmates would write about love, romance and hope. “Little Angel,” one of Mueller’s favorite songs, tells the story of a woman in Newark named Joan who would care for impoverished children in her neighborhood. Mueller had a soft spot for children, even producing two children’s albums towards the end of her music career.

Mueller settled down and met her partner, Robyn, and worked as a kindergarten teacher in her hometown.

Then, in March 2020, the pandemic hit. Everyone was forced to quarantine in their homes while medical professionals and other essential workers battled the virus while providing important services to communities.

Mueller was so moved by the courage of these workers that she decided to write their stories and publish them on Facebook. She writes: Peace May God grant us peace.

May the world live in peace.

May we all find peace in our hearts.

In this world of ours, the notion of peace is but a dream of those with open hearts.

But if we all pray for peace to spread throughout the land, it may not happen right away
