Celebrating Life at The Southern NJ Shore

I’m one of those people that cleans my house before the housecleaner arrives. I’ll never forget the time my cleaning lady asked me to pay more because my house was messier than expected. I am still traumatized so needless to say, you’ll find me scrubbing, mopping, wiping, and sweeping before every housekeeping visit. Yes, I know what your thinking to yourself: Whats the point!

While it feels like a chore, spring cleaning is necessary and invigorating once it’s done. The truth of the matter is it will never be really done. Not as long as people are living

within these walls. But for a brief moment, I can enjoy the smell and calming energy of a freshly cleaned home. Is it perfect?

Absolutely not. Life shouldn’t be about perfection though.

Truly living is about loving the people around you and practicing kindness.

A dusty shelf isn’t a measuring stick for your self worth or ability to run a household.

It’s simply a dusty shelf. We often put so much pressure on ourselves and, in turn, miss out on the love and life happening amidst the mess. Whether you live for spring cleaning or loathe it like me, I encourage you to take the pressure off this season. As the saying goes, “do your best and forget the rest.” Life is for the living. This spring, breathe in new life, celebrate the warmer weather, and go easy on yourself. Tomorrow isn’t promised.

Everything You Need to Know About the Impending Plastic Bag Ban

W

hen New Jersey’s plastic bag ban was signed into law in November of 2020, it came with an 18-month grace period so people and businesses could get used to the idea and begin to adjust.

That 18 months is about to expire.

Come Wednesday, May 4, 2022, New Jersey will enact one of the strictest bag regulations in the nation, outlawing single-use plastic bags at all retail and grocery checkouts, and paper bags at grocery stores larger than 2,500 square feet.

The bill signed by Gov. Phil Murphy also bans the use of polystyrene plates and cups in restaurants and food service establishments. Part

of the law, which bans plastic straws at restaurants unless the customer requests one, already took effect on Nov. 4, 2021.

To comply, shoppers will need to change their habits, either by bringing their own reusable bags or containers to the store, purchasing them at the point of sale, or bringing their old grocery bags from home.

Restaurants may use paper bags for takeout and delivery, but not plastic bags. Retail shops and boutiques will no longer be allowed to use plastic bags either, but paper bags will be permitted.

Assemblyman Don Guardian (R-2nd) believes that the plastic bag ban is fundamental to protecting the environment. The former Atlantic City mayor, who wasn’t a member of the Assembly when the ban passed, is a supporter of the law.

While he’s a bag ban fan, Guardian sees room for moderation when it comes to the rule’s application.

He has worked with food banks for most of his career, which use plastic bags in their food distribution

efforts. Guardian says he hopes the state will be lenient toward these charities because food pantries will need time to adjust.

“This will definitely be a transition, similar to when we had to start wearing masks in 2020. No one liked the change, but we knew it was for a greater good. After a month, most people adapted. This will be the same,” said Guardian.

Like most supporters of the law, Guardian sees the benefit of preventing litter and protecting the environment.

“New Jersey has such beautiful waterways and land, and people from all over the country visit our beaches.

We want to ensure that those places stay beautiful for generations to come.”

The new law does not constitute a complete ban; there are plenty of loopholes and exceptions. For example, plastic bags can still be used privately in the home. And you can

still buy plastic bags online.

And, to Guardian’s point, food pantries have been granted a sixmonth extension for compliance, giving them time to switch to a more sustainable method. In the meantime, the state Clean Communities Council will provide them with 500,000 reusable bags for distribution to their clients, according to the NJDEP. They may also use paper bags.

Stores will not be permitted to offer paper or plastic during deliveries either, which has created some uncertainty in this era whee home delivery has become a preferred method for many shoppers.

So if deliveries don’t come in a box or reusable bag, grocery customers could potentially end up with a bunch of random items sitting on their porch without a way to carry them inside.

Shoppers will still find plastic bags in the produce and meat sections for those products. Those in dire need of a bagel or pastry will still be able to collect them in plastic bags.

A common concern involves the removal of pet waste. Most pet owners use plastic bags to pick up dog feces. That practice will be permitted to continue, but dog walkers will have to buy bags vs. stockpiling their own stash as market bags which will no longer be available.

Biodegradable and compostable bags are still available on the Internet, which is a better option for the planet than supermarket bags. Sandwich

Despite the popular reference to “Plastic Bag Ban,” the common description tells only part of the story.

The new law also refers to single-use polystyrene foam plates, cups, trays and utensils. Nothing made from polystyrene will be available for purchase or in restaurants because the material releases toxins in food and drink, which when consumed can cause cancer.

When sitting in intense sunlight, polystyrene releases pollutants into the ozone, contaminating landfills and intensifying climate change.

Surprisingly, paper bags are considered worse for the environment than plastic bags, according to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

The creation of paper bags uses four times more water than the production of plastic bags, and the fertilizer used to grow trees contains harsh chemicals that enter waterways, leading to the release of toxins and acid rain.

Paper bags are larger than plastic

bags, so they take up more surface area in landfills. They are also heavier, making them less fuel efficient to transport.

Even with so much evidence weighing against bag use, there are some people who see the ban as government overreach.

Charles Samuelson, an Egg Harbor Township resident, feels that the plastic bag ban oversteps his freedoms as an American.

The 86-year-old has been triple-bagging his groceries all year in preparation for May 4. Samuelson says he uses the bags to pick up his yorkie’s waste at the park, and lines his trash bins with them.

“My garage must have over one thousand bags stored there,” he said. “When they ban these bags, I’ll be ready.”

Melinda Hatfield, the owner of a jewelry boutique in Smithville, agrees with Assemblyman Guardian. She believes that the plastic bag ban will help the environment and reduce the impact of climate change.

Hatfield has been searching the Internet for alternatives to the small bags used for necklaces and earrings, but hasn’t found something reason-

able yet.

“It’s rare for New Jersey to be leading in progress, and I pray that the other states will follow,” said Hatfield. “Everyone needs to remember that this law is a good thing. It may be hard, but it’s still good.”

Local Special Education Teacher is Turning Beach Finds Into Art

H

undreds of years ago a ship was sinking off the New Jersey coast.

Sailors panicked and threw their cargo overboard in hopes of lightening the vessel’s load.

Blue bottles were tossed into the sea and sank to the bottom of the ocean, picked at by crustaceans and broken up by octopi and eels.

Those bottles, now simply glass pieces, were tossed by waves for decades. Sand particles ground and polished the glass until it was completely smooth and cloudy in color. The glass tumbled and tumbled until it reached the shore, buried in the wet sand.

Now beachcombers like Maggie Senatore are digging up the glass, valuing its potential as artwork.

Senatore, a special education teacher from Wildwood, has established her own art brand called Blue Bottle Art. She always loved crafting, so when the pandemic hit, she had extra time at home to do what she loves.

Because of the collective trauma of 2020, Senatore wanted to give her family gifts that were heartfelt and personal, so she took sea glass and created art with it, securing the pieces to a canvas and drawing or painting around the glass.

She posted pictures of the gifts on Instagram. Soon dozens of requests to purchase the artwork flooded Senatore’s inbox. One month later, she founded Blue Bottle Art. Every creation is unique. Some feature sea glass, but others use Cape May diamonds or shells found on South Jersey beaches. From the fins on a mermaid’s tale to the paw prints of puppies, Senatore adds context and commentary to each piece.

Her favorite work (and the most popular) is sea glass shaped like a seagull with the bottom reading, “Be as happy as a seagull with a french fry.”

EHT resident in need of a living kidney donor

A

vram Yushan of Egg Harbor Township is in search of a generous soul willing to learn more about living kidney donation. The 54 year old father of three, originally from Romania, suffers from polycystic kidney disease inherited from his late mother. After

serving as the sole caretaker for his mother during her dialysis journey and being the caretaker for his father, Avram went on to marry the love of his life and father three children.

In 2003, he learned that his kidney was failing, however he did everything in his power to maintain his health through medicinal healing.

That leg of his journey came to an end when he collapsed in his home in February of this year and landed a month-long stay in the hospital.

Avram continues to undergo regular dialysis treatments as he awaits an available kidney.

“A new kidney from a kind person will change my life forever,” states Yushan. “After I receive a new kidney, I will be a newborn all over again. I would be so happy if I could walk my daughters to the altar on their wedding day.”

Prior to dialysis, the stay-at-home father of three spent his time playing with his children, fishing, and snow skiing.

He looks forward to the hope of a full life spent with his wife and children following a successful kidney transplant.

There are many misconceptions about living organ donorship including the idea that you have to be a perfect match for the recipient.

While that is ideal, with modern technology and services such as the National Kidney Registry, it is no longer necessary.

Kidneys can be donated through the registry to be matched with someone in need. By donating on behalf of Avram, even if you are not a direct match, the kidney exchange program will offer what can be essentially viewed as a “Kidney IOU,” which opens the opportunity window further for everyone involved. When

someone donates to the registry that is a match for Avram, he will be first in line to receive the transplant because of the generous person that donated on his behalf.

Most people tend to assume that organ donorship can only occur after someone dies. While that is true for some organs, living donorship is one of the greatest gifts of modern technology. Healthy individuals can donate a lung, part of a lung, parts of

their pancreas, bone marrow, parts of their intestine, a lobe of their liver, and in this case - a kidney. Countless lives are saved every day through living donorship.

With over 15,000 people in the United States currently waiting for an organ transplant, over 6,000 kidney recipients each year will get a second lease on life through living donors.

One year of providing a better patient experience for children with autism Views from the Shore

T

his month, Shore Medical Center's Pediatric Care Center celebrates the first anniversary of its Sensory Friendly Pediatric Program. Shore developed the program in partnership with the Atlantic County Special Services School District to help children on the autism spectrum receive the best care possible when they come to the hospital. Looking back on this past year, the program has been a great success!

Going to the hospital can be a nerve-wracking experience for anyone, but for children on the spectrum, the sights, sounds and feelings can be especially overwhelming because of how they process the world around them. Coupled with the pain or discomfort they may be experiencing due to their medical emergency, it can be a traumatizing time for the child and family and the staff providing care. Shore needed to educate its team about the unique needs of children on the spectrum while also creating an environment that helped them become calm enough to get care safely.

The sensory-friendly program at Shore was made possible thanks to training and guidance from autism experts at Atlantic County Special Services School District and through a generous donation from an anonymous family. Shore converted one of its pediatric patient rooms into a sensory-friendly room with their support. It features a colorful remote-controlled bubble wall, projector, tactile wall, weighted blankets, communication devices, and a closet full of sensory toys for children to choose from to help calm and distract them. Atlantic County Special Services School provides ongoing training so that all of Shore’s staff in the Pediatric Care Center are fully educated on how to best help children on the spectrum.

Misti Martin, RN, has been a nurse in the Pediatric Care Center for six months, after spending the first 2.5 years of her Shore career in the adult ER. She is proud to work at Shore,

where she has the tools needed to care for children with autism as best she can.

"Even with all the training in the world, nurses typically aren't kept upto-date with how to care for someone on the autism spectrum properly," Martin said. "Shore's sensory-friendly program and training have helped take away many unknowns. This is new territory for some of us; we don't care for patients with autism on a daily basis.

With these children, you have to think completely outside of the box. Having that out-of-the-box equipment and resources to help you is very beneficial."

Martin described an experience she had recently caring for an older child on the spectrum and how the program helped. When he arrived, the child was already feeling very stressed and didn't want anyone to look at him or touch him. He had a medical issue that was causing him pain, so understandably he was upset. He didn't want to see any of the medical staff on the way in, so a friend walked him into the room to help him get acclimated.

"We allowed him to explore the room and become comfortable with his surroundings. He looked at the bubble wall, touched the tactile wall, went through the drawers, and we then got him some of the sensory toys, and he was able to calm himself down with those," Martin said. "We also gave him a weighted blanket, and once he was able to feel that he had some control over his surroundings and he was more relaxed, we were able to initiate care."

Martin's shift was over before the patient was discharged, but she heard later that he was a completely different person when he left. He had the care he needed and he was calm.

Jim Hillis, RN, BSN, MHA, CCRN, Assistant Nurse Manager of the Emergency Department and Pediatric Care Center, says that the Sensory Friendly Pediatric Program has already benefited many children on the autism spectrum since its opening.

“Our main focus as medical professionals is to do whatever we have to do to get our patients the care they need and how they need it. We are trained to identify when children might benefit from our sensory-friendly program.

I'm proud that we've been able to help families feel comfortable bringing their child to Shore for care and that we can help children safely get the care they need."

Martin shares the same pride. She said one of the best parts of this experience has been seeing the children

and parents light up when they realize Shore has all the tools to help their child get care safely.

"At first, a child will come in and tense up, but then we escort them to the sensory room and show them what we have, and it's like a lightbulb goes off. You start pulling out all of these familiar sensory tools, and the parents are so relieved, like, 'Oh my goodness, you get us!' It's been a beautiful and very rewarding change," Martin said.

One of the features Martin is especially excited about is the communication iPad. It contains an app that staff can use to communicate with nonverbal children. Approximately 25-30% of children with autism are nonverbal but many learn to communicate through pictures. Staff can use both printed picture books and the iPad app, which was programmed by Atlantic County Special Services School speech therapists, with plans for the team at Shore to program it with words and actions they will need in the future. "When a child can express how

they feel, or what they need, or when we can communicate with them in a way they are used to, as they do in school, they get excited. Now they can tell us, ‘Hey, I want this!’ You can see the excitement when they're pointing to the pictures because they know what you're asking them, and they have a way to respond."

Martin wants all parents of children with autism to know about the sensory-friendly program and how committed she and all her colleagues are to providing the best care that they can.

"We're here to help in any way possible. We have a lot of tools that we can use, and we will do anything to make your child more comfortable and able to get the care they need."

Asbury Avenue: Ocean City’s Thriving Shopping District Business Buzz

hat makes Ocean City America’s Greatest Family Resort?

First and foremost, it’s clean and safe. Families have been going there for generations to enjoy the beach, bay and all of the summer activities.

The Boardwalk speaks for itself.

Some of the most iconic businesses like Manco and Manco Pizza, Johnson’s Popcorn, Kohr Brothers Custard, Wonderland Pier and Playland's Castaway Cove keep families going back to the Boardwalk summer after summer.

But there’s far more to Ocean City’s business success than what happens up on the ‘Walk.

In recent years the rejuvenation of Downtown Asbury Avenue has been the catalyst for the city. Ocean City is not a summer town, especially during the last two years.

It is proving itself to be a vibrant, year-round retail and professional community. While the regional malls have witnessed shrinkage, Asbury Avenue has positioned itself as a solid downtown business district.

Meet Rylee: Miss NJ Outstanding Teen's First Contestant with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Rylee Howerton of Vineland is not your average teenager. Born with a rare chromosomal disorder, Rylee was given a 5 percent chance of making it to her first birthday and only a 1 percent chance of seeing her tenth.

Today Rylee is 16 and thriving.

As the reigning Miss North Jersey Outstanding Teen, Rylee is competing with teens throughout the state to become Miss New Jersey Outstanding Teen.

When the competition begins June 24 at Resorts in Atlantic City, she will officially become the first contestant in the history of the event to have autism spectrum disorder.

“She is so excited because she feels like she is the person opening the door,” said Julie Howerton, Rylee’s mom. “She’s showing that a diagnosis of autism, or anything else,

does not eliminate you.”

Rylee has been opening doors and defying stereotypes her entire life. Although diagnosed with autism, a developmental disability, Rylee’s capabilities outshine anything she may lack.

Rylee is an inspiration to many, shattering the low expectations once placed on those with autism. She has held numerous titles, authored a book, plays high school sports, does well academically and is a leader in her community.

She will be speaking in October before thousands at the Autism NJ Annual Conference at Harrah’s.

Rylee is an enigma and above all else, true to herself. On any given day you might see Rylee looking tough as she nails playing high school sports, works out in the gym, or you may see her in a gown and heels, donning a crown. She will not be pigeonholed or limit her

experiences due to the expectations of others.

Rylee enjoys competing in pageants and has been doing so for 10 years. True to herself though, Rylee’s talent is not what one might expect to see showcased at a pageant. Weight lifting is her talent. Why weight lifting?

“I tried dancing, playing piano and singing,” Rylee said. “It just wasn’t me. I always loved hardcore sports and I want to be authentic and powerful. I would rather be my genuine self and lose than win for being someone I’m not.”

“Choosing Wise Words” is Rylee’s platform. It is also the title of the book she wrote in 2017. She often reads her book to classes in various schools and group meetings in the area.

She speaks to anyone and everyone she can about the importance of choosing their words carefully.

Rylee shares how the “R- word” has personally hurt her as someone who has been diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

Rylee is available for appearances and loves to speak to groups, clubs and classes about this issue. Parents and teachers can use “Choose Wise Words” to help teach their children the importance of this.

“Rylee is the epitome of persever-

ance and she has the most beautiful blinders,” says Rylee’s mother, Julie Howerton. “She doesn’t see strange looks or disapproving body language.

She doesn’t care about male or female, race, religion, rich or poor, etc.

She just loves people, all people.”

When Rylee grows up, she wants to be a science teacher for the deaf.

She loves sign language and shows her skills off in the many pageants in which she competes.

Look for Rylee Howerton to bring something new to the stage at this year’s Miss New Jersey Outstanding Teen Competition.

Sip Something New at Open That Bottle Night

tarting in 2022, we added a fun new feature to the event schedule in our Somers Point store: Open That Bottle Night.

Open That Bottle Night was created in 1999 by Wall Street Journal columnists and married couple Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher. OTBN occurs annually on the last Saturday of February (a point in the winter when we can all use something to look forward to!), and the intention of the celebration is to encourage us to open the bottles we may have been stowing away for a special occasion. There are lots of reasons to save bottles: perhaps we purchased something during a winery visit, received a special gift for a birthday or anniversary, or we’ve been holding onto a particularly noteworthy vintage. On Open That Bottle Night, we are reminded that we don’t need to wait for a holiday or milestone to celebrate. In reality, each day is a special occasion, and there’s always a reason to gather with cherished friends and family and toast to being together.

David Setley, PV wine educator and inhouse sommelier, hosted the first Passion Vines Open That Bottle Night in February.

It was so much fun, we’re doing it again on May 10! We’ve adapted the OTBN concept into a unique bottle-sharing event at our Somers Point bar. Here’s how it works: ● Reserve your seat for $5. ● When you arrive, purchase your choice of any bottle of wine from the shelf, in the $15-$30 range (our wine experts

will be on hand with recommendations if needed). ● The selected bottles will be collected behind the bar, and we will pour a sample of each bottle for each guest.

If any wine remains after the event, it will be recorked for the purchaser to bring home. ● Cheeses and other pairings will be provided to complement the wine selections.

ircuses were one of the first forms of paid entertainment in the United States, with talented performers travelling country-wide to amuse and thrill audiences. There were always main events, such as musicians, danc-

something so painful. These popular acts would then tour independently of the main acts as traveling sideshow performers.

One of the most famous sideshow acts today is Hellzapoppin, the world’s largest international touring rock-n-roll circus sideshow. They describe themselves as a “vaudeville freak show of wonder featuring legendary and world-breaking live stunts such as fire eating and fire breathing, magic and illusions, acrobatic stunts, hand balancing, foot archery, sword swallowing, juggling, unicycling and more.”

Many of the acts have been featured on T.V shows such as Ellen and AMC’s Freakshow, and you may also recognize them from Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and The Guinness World Records.

They have even appeared in music videos with rock bands such as Avatar and Texas Hippie Coalition and performed at music festivals such as Riot Fest in Chicago and Alcatraz Festival in Belgium.

Months after they had originally planned to embark on a 2020 global tour of their world-famous show, Hellzapoppin Circus are finally coming to Atlantic City to showcase their incredible stunts at Bourre AC (201 S New York Ave, Atlantic City) on May 6 at 7pm. Expect many star-studded performers to be present as they shock, entertain, and risk everything to put on the show of a lifetime.

Lucian Fuller, a high energy and family friendly circus performer, is famed for his incredible juggling, dangerously funny stunts, and clean comedy. Lucian is no stranger to highstakes performances as he is also a member of Cirque Du Soleil, having performed in over 5,000 shows and 27 countries.

The half-man himself, Mr. Short E. Dangerously, will amaze fans as he walks on his bare hands over broken shards of glass…while on fire. Known affectionately as “Shorty”, he stands at 3’3” and demands you save your sympathy as his smooth-talking, charismatic personality will have you in awe. A veteran of the industry, Shorty is renowned in New Zealand, Brazil, Venezuela, Europe, Australia, Canada, and all over the US. He even has a wax figure featured in Ripley’s museums all over the world. It’s safe to say this man has left his mark in this lifetime.

The oh-so sultry Ms. Willow Lauren will enchant audiences with her spellbinding tricks and stunts. Known as the “Ballerina of the Blades”, Willow swallows swords and performs the contortion blade-box of death.

She eats fire, regurgitates razor blades, and saws holes in her neck with no blood and no pain. How does she do it? No one knows, but it will certainly leave you wanting to see more.

The main who feels no pain, Mr. Eric Ross, is a magician and stunt-man who performs death defying stunts such as poking long stainless steel skewers through his biceps, palm of his hands, and even his mandible where it pops out under his jaw and next to his throat. Again, he feels no pain and there is no blood.

Finally, Camille Zamboni is a dazzling contortionist, hand balancer, and archer who sends arrows flying through the air using her feet whilst balancing upside down on her hands and bending over backwards. Her playful curiosity and sweet demure will captivate audiences of all ages.

The entire show is hosted by ringleader Bryce “The Govna” Graves.

The Govna is a man of mystery and has a way with words that will leave audiences simultaneously enthralled and curious. His eccentric persona is both charming and obscure. He is the perfect person to lead this group of misfits. He takes care of his performers like his own children, mentoring them to be the very best in the world.

Bayview Garden Nurseries Celebrates National Gardening Day with Spring Workshop

ayview Garden Nurseries, in Northfield, celebrated National Gardening Day with a “Spring Container Gardening Workshop”, held on Thursday, April 14. The greenhouse was all abuzz with gardeners eager to plant their spring pots under the guidance of Bayview’s garden center manager, Joni Cummings.

Af ter f illing their pots with soil, the 25 attendees could choose from an array of colorful spring flowers including

Autism Awareness and My Personal Experience

T

he entire month of April is dedicated to celebrating and raising awareness of individuals, young and old, on the spectrum, also known as autism spectrum disorder, or ASD. This year also marks the 15th anniversary of April 2 being designated World Autism Day. This is a time to recognize, honor and show support for the many individuals who are diagnosed, and now learning how to better our society with acceptance and inclusion.

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that presents many difficulties, such as impaired social interaction and communication, sensory integration issues, restricted interests, repetitive behaviors, lack of eye contact, hand eye coordination and body awareness, just to name a few.

People diagnosed on the spectrum often have difficulties navigating through the varying aspects of life. For some,

there are sensory issues. It can range from having an unusual response to loud (and especially unexpected) sounds, to having painful reactions to bright flashing lights and crowded rooms.

Some may be bothered by wearing certain clothes due to the feeling created by tags or certain materials.

As you might guess, situations like these and others lead to autism related anxiety, a major issue that many deal with on a daily basis.

Sudden changes to one’s routine, no matter how small, can throw off the entire day. Changes in any way to preferred foods such as how it’s prepared, temperature, color, texture and taste can be disastrous.

For parents, meeting daily dietary needs is a challenge. Fear and understanding the unknown play an important role in the emotional responses created by anxiety.

Each person diagnosed on the spectrum has their own set of challenges. Even though the difficulties are listed as the same, each response is different.

Having the right support from parents, siblings, school and community can make a world of difference. This usually includes therapies such as physical, occupational, and speech therapies with guidance and social interaction.

As an adult on the spectrum, I know all of this to be true. At the age of 6, I was diagnosed with one of four subtypes of autism known as PDD-NOS (pervasive development disorder-not otherwise specified).

My current diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome came years later. Asperger’s, part of the autism spectrum, affects neurodevelopment, meaning an individual’s way of processing everything from thoughts, emotions, behaviors to dealing with physical issues.

Each person may have their own set of individualized challenges, but being diagnosed on the spectrum does not mean that an individual can’t achieve success.

Having the right support, whether a parent, sibling, guardian, even a community can make a world of difference.

I was recently captivated by a new documentary film “In A Different Key.” Based on the book of the same name, this powerful feature-length movie brings attention to autism and some of the individuals that make up this broad spectrum.

One of those individuals, Donald Triplett, is the first recorded person diagnosed with autism as a child. The story shows how one community rallied behind Triplett, supporting him and his journey through life.

According to the U.S. Department of

Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy, many Americans diagnosed with autism face significant employment challenges, and most often experience substantial unemployment or underemployment.

Adults and youth also face barriers in completing post-secondary education and training opportunities, access to healthcare and integrated community living.

Individuals on the autism spectrum should be given the opportunity to meet their full potential. I encourage employers to see the potential that an individual on the autism spectrum can provide for your business or workplace.

There is a proverb that reads, “It takes a village to raise a child,” meaning that an entire community of people must interact with children so they can live and grow in a safe, healthy environment.

The same can be said for special needs individuals. With the right support and a caring community of people, we can make great strides and successes in the life of an adult or child diagnosed with autism.

How Longport Got Its Name An Early History

A

ccording to local historian and former Mayor Michael Cohen, in his book “Longport- The Way We Were,” the first recorded private landowner was Thomas Budd, who settled a claim against the Lord Proprietors of New Jersey in 1695. In the claim, he was awarded 1,500 acres of land, of which a large portion was located on Absecon Island.

He later sold most of the property at cost of four cents an acre.

1908 map shows a longer Longport ing sand from an erosion updrift from Atlantic City between 1870 and 1880.

He never came to see the land he purchased, nor did he decide to develop it.

Although, he came back to Longport several years later and purchased an entire block of land, between 12th and 13th avenues, where he built a home on the beach. Long named it the “Bide-AWee.” By the turn of the century, the home was sold and became a sanatorium. The building was destroyed by a storm in 1914.

Long decided to sell Lot 32 to his friend M. Simpson McCullough in 1882.

McCullough, a renowned Philadelphia lawyer, businessman, developer and builder, thought of developing the area into a “seashore resort.”

McCullough purchased the area, which had increased to a size of 250 acres for a total of $150,000.

He then decided to name the area “Longport” in honor of the previous parcel owner and his friend. The naturally long port on the bay side also contributed to McCullough’s decision in names.

Longport became a good deal shorter between the years of 1900 and 1916, when approximately 180 acres of the 250 that McCullough purchased, moved across the inlet and became what is known as the Ocean City Gardens. This explains why the first avenue of the borough starts at 11th, instead of first, as avenues one through 10 were lost during those years.

Years later, in 1854, Samuel Overshine purchased a parcel of land containing dunes that built-up at the southwestern end of the island for $130. That same year he sold a parcel of that land for $10 to Isaac Barton. Three years later, Barton traded what was known

as Lot 32 for a total of $2,000 plus land in Arkansas to James Long.

Long kept the property for 25 years and over the years, his property value increased in both value and size. His property increased by a little more than a mile in length after accumulat-

otatoes are a great source of fiber and a superfood. Fiber helps prevent heart disease by keeping cholesterol and blood sugar levels in balance. If you are trying to lose some weight, a potato will keep you full and on your journey of health.

Potatoes are also full of antioxidants to protect us from and prevent disease. Potatoes include lots of vitamins and are packed with nutrients, including potassium. In addition, potatoes help improve the digestive system and are gluten-free.

Potatoes can be eaten every day as long as you’re not eating a serving of the potato with other unhealthy foods. Enjoy half a cup of cooked potatoes each day for breakfast or lunch.

Ingredients: 4 medium baking potatoes ● 1/4 cup of 1% milk ● 2 tablespoons of butter ● 1 tsp dill ● 3/4 tsp herb seasoning ● 4-6 drops of hot pepper sauce ● 2 tsp grated Parmesan cheese ● 3/4 cup low fat 1% cottage cheese Directions Prick the potatoes with a fork.

Bake at 425 for at least 60 minutes or until a fork is easily inserted. Cut the potatoes in half lengthwise. Carefully scoop out the potato leaving about 1/2 inch of pulp inside the shell. Then ●

mash the pulp in a large bowl. Mix in by hand the remaining ingredients except for Parmesan cheese. Spoon the mixture into potato shells. Sprinkle each top with 1/4 tsp Parmesan cheese. Place on a baking sheet and return to the oven. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the tops are golden brown. This recipe serves 8 with 1/2 potato each.

Lessons From the Garden Jeff's Journal

s the weather warms, I don’t know about you, but my mind turns to thoughts of preparing our yard for some flowers, vegetables and maybe even herbs for the season ahead. I’m not usually in the habit of offering gardening advice; that’s just not my

“lane” of expertise. But in this case, it is my “lane” of experience and I can speak with great authority.

If you’ve ever thought about adding herbs to your garden, be very careful. If you’ve done this before,

you most likely already know what I’m about to share. But if you haven’t, here goes. I don’t know much about herbs but I do know this. If there is one herb to proceed with extreme caution, it is mint. Several years ago I got the idea that I wanted to plant some fresh herbs in a small raised garden in our backyard. I thought I’d try basil, parsley, thyme, and a couple of others including mint. As I recall, I bought one small plant of each herb and neatly planted them in a row several inches apart. I looked forward to using the fresh herbs that summer. The next season, before I had a chance to plant anything, my mint from the year before miraculously appeared in the spring and boldly staked its claim on my garden.

It was everywhere!

So much so that I simply couldn’t get rid of it. What I’ve since learned is that I should have confined my mint to a potted plant. Some mint is good, but when it grows to the point that you can supply a local garden center the next season, it’s way too much. Several seasons later, it still appears every spring.

What’s my takeaway? As I said before, I’m certainly not in the business of offering gardening advice, but I do think there are some other practical lessons we can all learn from

my mint “experience”. ● Do your research before you introduce something or someone new into your journey. The habits you and I create, the people we hang out with, and the ideas and thoughts we allow into our lives all have an impact, in some cases a profound impact. ● The adage that too much of a good thing isn’t a good thing is worth considering. I like mint, but not to the point that the mint begins to choke out everything else. ● Reversing course when we find that we’ve made unwise choices isn’t always impossible, but it does take work.

Having said this, believe it or not, I’m still working on getting rid of the

mint. I’ve found I will most likely have to dig deep in the roots, replace the entire gardening bed and start over.

In the meantime, if you would like some mint, I can still help you out. Oh, and if you are a gardener and have other advice on eliminating the mint, let me know. I’m all ears.

Encouraging an Early Love of Reading Moms Vibe:

ummer reading lists will be coming home soon and kids will be faced with balancing their desire to relax all summer with the need to complete their annual reading challenge. For my oldest, summer reading has always been a chore and a headache that we both give up on by the end of summer.

For my youngest, however, I’ve been trying things a little differently to encourage a love of reading, including paying him when he completes a book.

Years ago I had the privilege of listening to world renowned author and motivational speaker, John Maxwell speak at a conference. I don’t remember much from his speech at this point but one thing that stuck

out to me was his conversation about how his parents inspired his love of learning. He explained that he never got paid to do chores at home, as certain things were expected of him simply because he lived there. What his parents did pay him to do was read books.

For each book he read, he earned an allowance. This kept him motivated year-round to complete one book after the next. Needless to say, he became incredibly well versed and educated through the books he was reading and has gone on to become an internationally recognized motivational speaker.

While all of our children’s lives will inevitably chart different paths, it goes without saying that books can take them further than they could ever imagine. Only good things can come from a love of reading instilled at an early age.

As we get ready for those summer lists, start implementing the encouragement of recreational reading now.

Here are some ideas to foster an appreciation of books in your home this year.

life. In combination with the book allowance, I have my child tell me about the book’s plot and main characters then begin a conversation about the story. He is excited to tell me about the characters and it assures me that he actually read the words.

Always carry a book

Keep it oldschool. Instead of making the tablets and iPhones top of the list when you leave the house, make sure you’re grabbing a book.

Similar to how parents put veggies on the table before dinner to encourage healthy foods first, encourage healthy reading habits as a first form of entertainment. I’ll be the first to tell you that screen time is abundant in my home but I’ve gotten in the habit of telling the kids to grab a book as we walk out the door and at the first sight of boredom, I have them at least read a few pages. A little reading is better than no reading at all.

Encourage repetition

There is nothing wrong with a child wanting to read the same book over and over. The repetition encourages speed and accuracy while building their sight word recognition. Once they’ve worn out their favorite books, look for similar characters in other stories to connect the dots between the book they love and their new read.

Celebrate each finished book

Make a big deal when your child finishes each book, just as you did the first time they read a word.

Let them know how proud you are and remind them of how cool it is to be able to get lost in the world of books. Talk to your child about how fortunate we are to be able to read, receive public education, and have access to more books than we could imagine. To be able to read is a privilege that is often overlooked and treated as a chore. Change the narrative for your child by instilling a respect and appreciation for reading as early as possible.

It is never too early to foster a love of reading in your little ones. You know how your child is motivated and how they like to be rewarded so maybe these ideas need to be tweaked to meet your child’s needs. Use them as a starting point and remember, a few pages is better than nothing when it comes to keeping your child engaged in a book. Little habits, day after day, add up.

Battle at Chestnut Neck The Pirates of The Revolution

t was late September 1778 and British Commander General Henry Clinton had enough. He decided to take serious action against the privateers of southern New Jersey. Calling it “The Egg Harbor Expedition”, the General’s mighty fleet would root out the “nest of rebel pirates,” then advance up the Mullica and destroy the ironworks at Batsto.

Nine warships armed with cannons

and 400 soldiers set sail from British held New York City down the coast and make an attack. The ragtag group at the Jersey shore were in for a fight.

When the American colonies declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776, the infant nation was in no position to defy British rule of the seas. Britain’s navy in the late 1700’s was the world’s most powerful. The Royal Navy—once the protector of American shipping—now made every effort to suppress and

destroy it. The Americans responded to the situation with the time-honored practice of privateering. American privateering activity during the American Revolution became an industry born of necessity that encouraged patriotic private citizens to harass British shipping while risking their lives. The term Privateer refers to a private individual who received a government permission to attack and seize enemy ships, a sort of lawful Pirate.

vessels were converted to privateer boasts. War supplies were carried on wagons up to Burlington, then to Philadelphia and brought directly to Washington’s troops.

The year 1778 was a busy one for the Privateers. Dozens of ships full of materials bound for the British troops in New York City were raided. In August of 1778 alone thirty ships and their cargo were sold by privateers.

The most notable capture was the Venus of London. Its cargo consisted of fine broadcloths, linens, silks, satins, fine stockings, shoes, medicines, books, hardware, butter, cheese, beef, pork, and porter. The ship itself was also sold. It is believed that this capture was the final straw that pushed the British to act decisively.

Their navy mission started off well, as the wind was with the British. But by the next day, the winds changed directions and a storm began to rage.

The harsh weather slowed the ships.

It took them over four days to travel down the coast. The delay gave the Americans a chance to learn about the plot and move many of their ships safety out to sea or hide them farther up the river. Most anything of value was moved away. The only ships left for the British were their own recent captured vessels.

There was a small fort to protect Chestnut Neck, but it was not

equipped with cannons. The American militia were unable to put up much resistance against the British forces who opened cannon fire on the fort from their ships, and then came ashore attacking and driving the American forces from the fort into the woods, where they scattered.

The British sunk several privateer ships they found. They destroyed the markets and warehouses. The homes in the village were burnt down.

While the British may have destroyed Chestnut Neck, they could not complete their mission of destroying the Batsto iron works. Many of their craft were grounded in the shallows, plus it became clear that the Americans were on to their plans.

Reinforcements, led by General Pulaski were on their way. The British withdrew and sailed back north. Still, the British raid had permanently wiped Chestnut Neck off the map as an organized community. Three of the landowners who had their houses burnt – Micajah Smith, John Mathis, and Joseph Sooy – soon rebuilt their homes, while others rebuilt in nearby Port Republic. Chestnut Neck soon became a privateering center again. Today, the few houses and boat ramps of Chestnut Neck can be seen from the Garden State Parkway entering Atlantic County from the north.

Grow Your Flowers and Eat Them Too: Five Recipes Using Edible Blooms That Taste Like Spring Zucchini Blossom Fritters

Flower Power Spring Rolls

Ingredients: ● One package of rice spring roll wrappers ● 7 ounces of thread bean noodles ● 3 green onions, chopped ● 2 cups of fresh spinach ● 1 cup of peanuts, chopped finely ● ¼ cup of fresh basil ● 1 cup of Napa cabbage ● 1 cup of edible flowers, leaves and stems removed Boil water in a medium saucepan and add noodles to the salted water.

Let soften for five minutes. Strain and set aside.

Clean produce and chop green onion, basil, spinach and cabbage into evenly-chopped strips.

On a flat surface, lay out wrappers after submerging each one briefly in water to make them pliable. Place edible flowers down first and press them into the wrapper, bloom facing

Most Americans prefer to smell flowers rather than chewing on them, but many chefs around the world have incorporated florals into their cuisine, adding hints of earthiness and brightness to savory and sweet dishes. In Asia, hot water with rose petals is a popular homemade drink for children and adults alike. At coffee shops like Positively Fourth Street in Ocean City, you’ll find lavender and honey lattes on the menu. If you are a daring

Ingredients: 7 squash blossoms ● 1 large egg ● 4 tablespoons of finely-grated Parmesan cheese ● ½ cup of milk of choice ● 1 cup of all-purpose flour ● 1 teaspoon of baking powder ● 1 teaspoon of garlic powder ● A pinch of salt Rinse and inspect each blossom, removing any dirt, thorns or insects.

Cut out the pistol of each flower using a small knife. Dry and saute over medium heat in 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Remove from heat when each blossom is browned, five-eight minutes.

In a large soup pot, pour 2 cups of canola oil (or peanut oil) and turn on medium heat on your stove.

Chop zucchini blossoms into ½-inch pieces and add to the dry mixture (flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder in a medium bowl).

Mix well.

Add egg, milk and cheese to the dry mixture and stir to create batter.

The batter should be fairly wet. ●

Use a spoon to scoop batter and drop into the pot with oil, frying for three minutes on each side. Remove and dry on a paper towel.

Violet Macarons

Ingredients: ● 3 egg whites ● 2 cups of granulated sugar ● 1 cup of powdered sugar ● 1 cup of almond flour ● 3 tablespoons of candied violet petals ● 1 stick of butter, softened ● 2 tablespoons of violet liqueur ● 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract ● ½ container of cream cheese Twenty-four hours before you plan to serve the macarons, separate the egg whites at room temperature

in a covered container. Let them sit overnight.

Beat egg whites on high using an electric stand mixer.

Slowly add granulated sugar until all of the sugar is incorporated and a thick, whipped meringue is formed. Beat until the meringue has stiff peaks, and be careful not to overwhip or the macarons will be too dry.

Carefully add almond flour and violet petals, mixing by hand. Scoop mixture into a pastry bag and squeeze into 1-inch circles on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Let the rounds sit for an hour at room temperature then bake at 280 degrees for 15 minutes.

Use the electric stand mixer to combine powdered sugar, cream cheese, butter, vanilla extract and violet liqueur to create frosting.

Let macaron shells cool completely, then pipe frosting to create sandwiches.

Your perfect dessert is ready!

Dandelion Honey

Ingredients: ● 60 dandelion flowers ● 1 cup of granulated sugar

1 cup of water 1 lemon, zested and juiced ● ¼ cup of brown sugar Harvest dandelions from your lawn or your neighbor’s property (with their permission). Cut off stems and roots and soak blossoms in cold water for 30 minutes, carefully removing dirt. Pat the flowers dry.

Add flowers to a pot of boiling water and let heat for two minutes, then turn off completely. Let dandelions soak in water overnight.

Run flowers/water through a cheesecloth into another pot, collecting blossoms into the cloth.

Bring liquid to a boil on the stove and add brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon zest and lemon juice. Boil for one hour and let cool completely until the jelly forms.

Enjoy over pancakes or bread and store in a sealed container in the fridge for up to one month. ● ●

ull disclosure, I’ve used that headline before, but as I write this column with the Sixers leading Toronto two games to none in their opening round NBA playoff series, it seems appropriate to use it again.

Since I last wrote, the Sixers have drawn the Raptors as their first round opponent and are having success so far. The Phillies began the season with two straight wins, but it’s been mostly trouble since then. The Eagles are looking ahead to the NFL draft. The Flyers honor their arena “voice”, but can’t get to the end of their season fast enough.

Tiger Woods began with a bang at the Masters, but did not win. On the local front, I recently came across a neat picture of two hometown guys who both made it to the big leagues. Plus, I was incredibly honored to be given an award for my high school basketball coverage over the years. Finally, there’s a local golf event coming up that I hope you’ll consider joining me at.

From entertainment, I wrote about “Mrs. Costanza” from the TV show “Seinfeld” last time. This time, sadly, I have to write about “Mrs. Seinfeld”.

Also, I made it out to the movie theater to see a new release, and despite negative reviews, I enjoyed it very much. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● Let’s start with the Sixers as they lead the Toronto Raptors two

games to none in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs as I write this. Who saw THAT coming? I have to admit, certainly not me!

I’m going to begin with Game 1 of the series where the Sixers dominated the Raptors and ran them right out of the arena winning 131-111.

Everyone wondered about James Harden going into the series, but it was actually rookie guard Tyrese Maxey who stole the show.

Maxey scored 21 of his playoff career-high 38 points in the third quarter and he hit five 3-pointers to lead Philadelphia to the 20 point win. The 21-year-old Maxey is the youngest Sixer ever to score at least 30 points in a playoff game. Only Allen Iverson had more points in a single quarter of a playoff game than what Maxey did. And, my favorite Maxey stat after game one was a graphic that ran on the postgame show titled “Among NBA Royalty - youngest players with 38+ points in a playoff game”. There were five names on the list, led by Magic Johnson who was still 20 in 1980 when he scored 42 in a playoff game. The next three names on the list are Lebron James, Lebron James & Lebron James, and then there’s 21-year and 163 day old Maxey with 38 points. What a select list to be on!

Meanwhile, playoff James Harden was excellent in Game 1 as well. 22 points and 14 assists for the “Beard” in his first Eastern Conference playoff game as a Sixer. For once, Joel Embiid didn’t have to be “Mr. Everything” as he finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds, but most

importantly, ZERO turnovers. I will quietly add Tobias Harris to this list too, as he finished with 26 points and seems to be settling into his role as a “catch & shoot” forward.

Everything went right for the Sixers in Game 1, for sure.

Which leads to Game 2, where the Raptors game plan seemed to be to foul Joel Embiid early & often.

Embiid responded with a 31 point, 11 rebound performance as the Sixers won the game 112-97. The MVP finalist made 12 of 14 free throws.

He sank 9 of 16 shots from the floor.

In general, he was a dominant force for which Toronto had no answer.

Again, I thought this series might go six or seven coming in, and now, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s over in as early as five.

It took Game 1 star Tyrese Maxey a long time to score in Game 2, but when he did, he was electric

again finishing with 23 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Tobias Harris was very good again with 20 points and 10 rebounds. James Harden had a quiet 14 points and six assists, but the Sixers were up by as much as 27 at one point, so they didn’t need much more from Harden.

Late in Game 2, the ESPN cameras caught an amusing exchange between Embiid and Toronto coach Nick Nurse. Embiid told Nurse that he was going to keep making all the free throws if Toronto continued to foul him. Nurse's retort? "You might have to." Embiid laughed and said he told Nurse, "respectfully, to stop b——ing about calls.” Um, I LOVE this kind of talk!

Here’s one good series stat for you.

The Sixers are 13-1 all-time when leading a playoff series 2-0. The only loss came in the 1977 NBA Finals, but let’s not talk about that!

The series now switches North of the Border to Canada, where they will have to play the next two games without defensive ace Matisse Thybulle. Thybulle, who received one third-place vote in the NBA defensive player of the year award voting, is barred from entering Canada because he is not fully vaccinated.

Let’s see if that makes a big difference in the series. Stay tuned.

Unfortunately, I have to write about the Phillies next as they seem to be teetering on the edge of real trouble, even though the season is only 11 games old. As I write this, the Phillies are coming off a 4-1 loss in Denver to the Rockies and their record is just 4-7 so far.

Simply put, a lack of offense has hurt the Fightin’s as they’ve lost six out of their last seven, and have only managed to put up 3 or more runs in two of those seven games. Kyle Schwarber is hitting .125 as I write this. Nick Castellanos went 0-4 with 2 K’s against the Rockies in the first game there. Bryce Harper is hitting .220, but doesn’t look comfortable at the plate. Remember those “big bats” that I wrote about in my last column? They aren’t hot just yet!

My other concern is the starting rotation. Staff ace Zack Wheeler is off to an 0-2 start with a 9.39 E.R.A. He left last Sunday’s game against the Marlins after just three innings, giving up 8 hits, 7 runs, all of them earned. The Phillies radio broadcasters spoke about Wheeler “abandoning his fastball”, and won-

dering if Wheeler is hurt. As I write this, no official news about that yet, but wouldn’t that be a huge downer?

Former #1 pitcher Aaron Nola looked better against the Rockies, striking out four through the first four innings, but Nola tired in the 6th and Charlie Blackmon took him DEEP to jump-start the Colorado offense. This is not a stat Phillies fans want to see. Nola has allowed 27 home runs since May 8, 2021, that’s tied for the most in the National League. Ugh. One final piece of Phillies news is about Bryce Harper as manager Joe Girardi says that Harper will be the DH for the entire Colorado series.

Apparently he is dealing with an elbow issue that bothers him when he throws, but not when he’s at bat.

Moving on to football where the Eagles can’t go three consecutive drafts taking a wideout in the first round, can they? Well, when the team goes on the clock on April 28th, they just might as it sure seems like they are trying to find another difference maker to pair with DaVonta Smith. The Eagles hold two first-round picks at #15 and #18, and ten total going into the draft. I can’t wait!

made its debut last weekend. The Philadelphia Stars are back! But they won’t actually play in Philadelphia for their first season, and they lost 23-17 to the New Orleans Breakers in Birmingham, Alabama. I have to tell you, on paper this seems like a great idea. And, I’m all for more players getting a chance to get PAID to play football. However, there was no way that I was turning off the Phillies, or PGA Tour golf, or the NBA playoffs, or really whatever I was watching to watch USFL football.

Sorry.

In hockey, the Flyers have lost five straight as I write this, including back-to-back losses to the lowly Buffalo Sabres. It’s probably not even fair for me to call Buffalo lowly, because the Flyers are arguably WORSE. Buffalo just set a dubious NHL record by missing the playoffs in 11 straight seasons, and beat the

Flyers in all three contests, winning by 6-3, 4-3, and 5-3. The last time the Sabres won three regular-season games in one season against the Flyers was in 2006.

Just when you think it couldn’t get much worse for the organization, comes a report from “Crossing Broad” that Flyers trainers are suing the team claiming that Zamboni chemicals at the practice facility in Voorhees caused cancer and rare medical conditions.

Flyers director of medical services Jim McCrossin and assistant athletic trainer Sal Raffa allege that the Zambonis at the rink used “gasoline and/or fuel containing and/or producing carcinogens.” According to their research, there are other comparable machines available that do not require gasoline or fuel with carcinogens. The Zambonis idle in the Zamboni room, which they state lacks appropriate ventilation, and the training room is in close proximity to it, exposing McCrossin and Raffa to the carcinogens, according to the complaint. McCrossin, who has worked at the facility since 2000, developed “rare medical conditions of essential thrombocythemia, myeloproliferative neoplasm, and most recently, myelofibrosis (blood cancer), which is incurable.” Raffa, who has worked there since 2004, developed a “rare medical condition of essential thrombocythemia, which is incurable.” My thoughts and prayers to both gentlemen as I think this is just awful news!

So, let’s end our hockey talk with some positive news as the Flyers honored longtime P.A. announcer Lou Nolan for 50 years as the team’s voice. The 2021-22 season marks Nolan’s 50th year in the role and his 55th with the Flyers, dating to the team’s inception in 1967-68. Jim Jackson, the Flyers’ TV play-by-play announcer, and Steve Coates, the Flyers’ radio color commentator hosted a pregame ceremony before the game with Anaheim on April 9th. The Flyers all wore the No. 50 during pregame warmups and had on a No. 50 patch on their game jerseys. And here’s one tidbit you might not know. Nolan returned to his “normal” spot between the penalty boxes for that game. The NHL moved all P.A. announcers upstairs when the pandemic hit and Nolan has been doing his signature “PECO Power Play”call from the press box instead of ice level. Well, Flyers CEO Dave Scott “paid the fine” according to reports, allowing Nolan to do his job from ice level for his night. Hey, that’s maybe the first thing I’ve agreed with Flyers ownership about in a LONG time! Congrats Lou…you are loved.

My last national item is from golf, as Tiger Woods thrilled the patrons (and me) with a first round score of 71 at the 86th Masters. It was remarkable to see Woods even walking, no less playing golf at Augusta.

He did make the cut, but faded big-time over the weekend thanks to a pair of 78’s. Woods says he will play the Open Championship this year because it’s at St. Andrews. I’m not sure if we’ll see him at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, but it was a thrill to see him at Augusta for sure. Oh, and Scottie Scheffler is amazing. He won the Masters with a ten under par score of 278. It was fun to watch!

Now to some local items, as I came across a picture I had saved of Millville’s Mike Trout greeting Cape May native Matt Szczur a few seasons ago. Trout just got hit on the hand for the Angels as hopefully he’s not injured seriously. Szczur recently returned to Chicago to throw out a ceremonial first-pitch at Wrigley Field before a Cubs game. Hard to believe they are both LOCAL. People forget that Mike Trout played basketball at Millville High School too when he was in high school. I was very honored to receive the John Pierantozzi Lifetime Achievement Award for my high school basketball coverage over the years at the CO Summit at Avalon Golf Club. The main purpose of the CO group (Coaches & Officials) is to raise money for scholarships for deserving scholar-athletes, and since the organization began in 2014, they’ve raised more than $100,000 for worthy high school seniors. The girls winners get the Dave Troiano Scholarship and the boys winners get the Paul Rodio Scholarship.

Speaking of which, the longtime St. Augustine head coach was also at the banquet and gave an emotional speech as he won the Fran Egan Memorial Courage Award. Again, my thanks to John Rodio, Steve Wescott and all involved with the annual CO Summit. I’m honored to receive an award for the late John Pierantozzi, who was an outstanding guy.

My last local item involves golf for a cause. After a few years off because of the pandemic, the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation is bringing back their fundraiser “Golf For a Cause”. It’s set for Thursday May 5th at Harbor Pines Golf Club and for $200 you get lunch, golf and dinner while raising money to fight cancer. Dean Randazzo is a surfing legend from right here in our area, so I urge you to come out and play, if you can. There are also opportunities to donate even if you don’t play golf. pril is National Poetry Month. So to celebrate, the Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University is hosting its very first Atlantic City Poetry Festival, noon-5 p.m. Sunday, April 24. Admission is free.

The idea originated when yours truly attended last year’s Paterson Poetry Festival, overseen by the poet Talena Lachelle Queen.

I realized long ago that you should never try to recreate someone else’s vibe. What I wanted to do, however, is create a space where poets could share and celebrate their love for words, their experiences, their passions and their love for each other as an artistic family.

All that inspiration came as a result of interacting with Talena Lachelle Queen leading up to the Paterson Poetry Festival, and at the opening of the festival itself.

The Benefits of Preplanning Your Funeral, part 4

s I continue this series on preplanning funerals, keep in mind that each step you take makes life easier for your loved ones.

So now you have had your discussion with your family and the funeral director, so you are all on the same page.

Also, the funeral director will make a record of the choices that were made of the individuals funeral/memorial arrangements. This would include if the individual wanted to be buried or cremated. In regard to being buried, it would define what type of burial (Traditional Burial, Green Burial or entombment), where the burial would take place (cemetery or mausoleum).

If there is to be a viewing and if so, is the person to be embalmed or not. It would also list for how long the viewing would be for, as an example a two hour

viewing the night before at the funeral home and an hour viewing before the service. It would also list where the viewing and/or services are to be held meaning at the funeral home, church, cemetery or any other venue.

The prearrangement will also have a record of what casket was chosen for the deceased to be buried in including the name, what it is made of (type of wood or metal), and it is a half couch or full couch. Also, if it is a burial in the ground and not an entombment there would be a listing of what type of vault was selected if required by the cemetery. The vault is the outer concrete/ metal/polystyrene container that the casket goes inside of at the cemetery to keep the grave from collapsing and help to maintain the integrity of the casket.

In regard to cremation, (if that is chosen) the prearrangement will define what type of cremation it is to be, meaning, a full-service cremation, cremation memorial service or direct cremation. If full-service cremation, just like a traditional service it will list where and for how long the viewing will be and where the service will take place and when and where the cremation will take place. For a cremation memorial service, the prearrangement will state if there is to be a time set aside for a visi-

tation either before or after the memorial service, if at all. For all the different types of cremation the prearrangement will explain what is to be done with the ashes following the cremation and/or services itself. This can include burying the ashes, scattering the ashes, keeping the ashes or all three because ashes can be separated and different things can be done with each portion, but that is another article. Also, in the prearrangement it will keep a record of what type of cremation container was picked for the body to be cremated in and what type of urn or urns were selected for the ashes to be placed in following the cremation. Some of you may be saying, there is more than just the one urn that the ashes can be put in? Yes, that is correct- the public really has a miscon-

ception of how cremations are really done (one of the reasons I write these articles) because people don’t want to know and movies and television usually get it wrong or warp reality for dramatic effect. When someone is cremated, MOST crematories require that the deceased be in a container that will properly hold the deceased remains without breaking open. The reason for this is the crematory staff does not want to physically handle the body until after the cremation. This is because the crematory workers don’t know what the deceased individual may have died from and therefore assume universal precautions. Therefore, a cremation container is selected by the family for their loved one to be placed in. These cremation containers can vary greatly depending on the wishes of the deceased and what the family in comfortable with. The same can be said for the urn, but like I said that is another article. Stay tuned for my next column as we discuss further.

South Jersey SingerSongwriter Brings Authenticity and Grace to the Music Scene

T

wenty-one year old Sage Thomas strolls through Cape May’s Washington Square Mall with a pensive look. Wind blows hair in her face as she kicks up pebbles from the brick walkways. She jumps up on a bench then jumps down. She looks up at the sky and then looks at the ground.

She walks and walks and walks and never reaches a destination. Her harmonious, eclectic voice guides the viewer through her thought process.

Even though she grew up in Cape May County, Thomas looks lost.

“Seeing so many people living their best days Getting caught in the deception of all the tiny lies Slowly finding that nobody's got it figured out Running around chasing my own tail” Even during the pandemic, Thomas noticed that all her friends had left for college. The singer-songwriter was waitressing between music gigs, and felt sick of meandering, waiting for a purpose. “I feel like I’m running late,” she sings. Her music video for her song “Late..?” (song quoted above) features kaleidoscoping, layered images of Thomas wandering fields and roads and the Washington Square Mall looking frustrated and confused. It’s a sentiment a lot of people feel, especially during the COVID-19 era.

Thomas has been working toward a full-time career in music and is planning on releasing a full album sometime later this year. Her singles can be found on Spotify and Apple Music, but those platforms only pay a half-penny per one listen of a song, Thomas reports. For now, the Cape May artist performs gigs regularly at venues such as Exit Zero, The Point in Somers Point, and the Stone

Harbor Yacht Club. “In the summers I am performing every other day,” said Thomas. “But it’s hard in this area during the winter because lots of places aren’t open.”

When asked to describe her music, Thomas says that she doesn’t consider herself a clever fit in any particular genre, but bounces between indie, folk and pop with some country influence. Thomas strives to be as authentic and honest as she can when she writes songs so that listeners can feel like she “ripped out a page from her journal and played it to music, connecting all of us through vulnerability.”

Growing up in Cape May, Thomas always knew she wanted to be a musician. She would perform songs for her family and friends and when she was 11, she started taking guitar and piano lessons. In high school, she took classes on sound engineering so she could edit her own songs. Today, she’s an independent artist who loves Jesus and drinking coffee.

30th ACUA Earth Day Festival to Be Held Sunday, April 24

he Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) is excited to celebrate its 30th Earth Day Festival this Sunday, April 24, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its Environmental Park located at 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. The festival has been canceled for the past two years due to the pandemic. This year, it is back and better than ever! ACUA’s festival is the longest running and largest Earth Day Festival in South Jersey.

The Authority expects to welcome more than 8,000 guests for a celebration of our collective home, Earth.

The festival will include more than 150+ local vendors, exhibitors, interactive entertainers, and musicians.

There are a range of activities for all ages, including Wastewater Facility Tours, Touch-A-Truck, a hayride to the top of the landfill, a free seedling giveaway, recycling tours, a composting demonstration, interactive shows for kids, music, and free workshops.

It is a perfect opportunity to learn about the environment while having fun and enjoying the day with family and friends.

The workshops will cover a variety of topics, including mini yoga sessions, a native plant “walk and talk,” the basics of raising backyard chickens, an overview of the Stockton University Maple Project, a sound bowl session, an introduction to mushrooms and a rain barrel demonstration.

“We are more than thrilled to host our Earth Day Festival once again,” said ACUA President Rick Dovey.

“Welcoming the community back to celebrate the environment for the 30th year is a wonderful feeling, especially after canceling the past two years. We look forward to this opportunity to instill an appreciation for the environment, show the important work we do here at ACUA, and highlight the good work of the many community groups and organizations in our area.”

Guests may visit the festival throughout the day and can park at ACUA’s facility or at an off-site parking area with shuttle service from Airport Commerce Center at 6550 Delilah Road.

The ins and outs of fitness cycling Shore Fit

ike riding is great cardio exercise.

Not only does it improve overall fitness, it promotes weight loss and maintenance, builds muscle and is especially easy on the joints.

Those who opt to bike for fitness have a major decision to make about where to do it. Whether you choose to pedal on a stationary bike indoors or ride a bicycle outside is entirely up to you and your personal preference.

I enjoy indoor cycling and have been instructing it for years. Whichever you choose, there are advantages and disadvantages to each type of cycling.

Both are easy on the joints, making it an ideal choice for many riders compared to a lot of cardio exercises such as running and aerobics, which are tough on the joints.

Many people who have injuries or arthritis, cannot do these types of exercises, which makes cycling their go-to choice.

Cycling is popular for those who suffer from knee issues, too. I have many indoor cyclists who take my class that are able to exercise even though they need knee replacements from years of running.

Biking is more sustainable because you place all of your weight on bones in the pelvis, not the hip, knee, ankle and foot joints.

On a bike you can improve range of motion in stiff joints and exercise with less pain.

For many who are carrying significant extra weight, cycling is a gentle way to start shedding pounds. It’s also not an awkward movement that’s unfamiliar like burpees, plyometrics and other aerobic exercise.

Anyone can ride a bike and not feel intimidated.

Both types of cycling improve cardiovascular fitness and help build muscle. The downstroke motion on a bike works the glutes, quads and calves. The upstroke uses the hip flexors and hamstrings, especially on bikes with clips or straps to keep the feet locked in place. On a much smaller scale, you also work your core and shoulder muscles when cycling.

Depending on the intensity and speed of the ride, a person can burn between 250 and 600 calories per half-hour when cycling. Of course, this all depends on your weight and current fitness level.

These factors make it an efficient activity for weight loss and weight maintenance.

You can burn a lot of calories in just 30 minutes of intense cycling.

Spin classes are popular at most gyms, but many people also enjoy using stationary bikes indoors on their own time and at their own pace.

Peloton and brands like it have soared in popularity. There are some great benefits of cycling this way, but there are also some downsides.

Stationary Cycling Benefits Indoor cycling is often more comfortable than being outside thanks to climate control. You avoid things like sunburn, windburn, rain and snow. You can watch television or streaming services while cycling indoors, which can be motivating for many people. You can also stay on the bike longer if you get into a good program.

Cycling on a stationary bike is generally very safe; it’s hard to get hurt on a stationary bike. High-intensity interval training is easy to do on an indoor bike, especially those with programmed workouts already built in. I prefer to teach this way as well.

Group cycling classes, like spinning, are fun and motivating for many people.

If you do it with friends, you have built-in accountability.

Listening to music or podcasts while cycling is also a great way to kill a substantial amount of time. If the music is great, you can just get lost in the moment. Also at home, you can cycle in private and with fewer distractions than in a gym or outside.

Stationary Cycling Drawbacks Cycling indoors can be boring because the scenery never changes and there are no fun, challenging terrains, although there are apps that you can subscribe to that simulate these rides.

Some people find spinning classes to be too intense and intimidating to even get started. If they avoid taking a class, then it’s up to the individual to vary the intensity and tension on a cycling workout. This can tempt some riders to take the easy way out. If you don’t push yourself, the workout won’t be effective and your goals won't be met.

Classes cost money and spinning costs an extra fee at some places. An indoor stationary bike for the home can also be expensive. The Peloton can run over $2,000 plus a $39 fee every month for the subscription.

The biggest downside to cycling indoors in my opinion is that you don’t get to enjoy nature, fresh air and natural terrain the way you do on an outdoor ride.

Indoor cycling can get old fast, whereas cycling outside allows you to change up the route and explore new places.

Outdoor Cycling Benefits When you’re outside, it’s hard to get bored, which in turn can be motivating.

Exercising outdoors provides a mental health boost. Just a few minutes of outdoor

activity provide emotional benefits; tension, stress, depression and anger are reduced.

Being in nature also improves mood and self-esteem.

You can push yourself more with natural terrain when cycling outdoors. If you choose a route with hills and you’ll have no choice but to increase the intensity. For this reason, outdoor cycling generally burns more calories than indoor stationary cycling.

Outdoor Cycling Drawbacks There are a few downsides to biking outdoors. The weather is the biggest, especially if you live somewhere with harsh winters.

There may be long stretches of time when you just can’t get outside on a bike.

During hot summer days, there are risks of sunburn, dehydration and heatstroke; factors that can be controlled better indoors.

Cycling outdoors comes with some safety risks. With any type of cycling, you may fall off the bike, get scraped up, or even break a bone.

On roads, cars can be a factor. Bike paths or trails are much safer than cycling on the road, but not everyone has easy access to them.

Outdoor riding can also be quite costly.

The purchase of the bike alone (especially a good one) can run you a couple of thousand dollars, and that doesn’t include the equipment that goes along with it including the helmet, shoes and clothing.

There really isn't a right or wrong answer to the question of which type of cycling is best. There are many factors to consider, and the right choice is different for everyone. It really comes down to personal preference.
