Celebrating Life at The Southern NJ Shore

Holiday traditions give us special opportunities to create memories with our loved ones. It gives us something to look forward to. Sometimes the traditions may seem silly or old hat, but when we look back, they bring us some of our most cherished memories.

For years, my family has walked the Ocean City boardwalk on Easter. I can still close my eyes and see my small children posing with the Easter bunny and the excitement in their eyes during the egg hunt on the beach.

Of course, the opening of the rides for the season brought out the most excitement. Now my grown girls and I still enjoy Easter in Ocean City, but it looks a little different these days. We browse through the shops, walk on

the beach and grab coffee together.

The holiday traditions may look different than they once did, but the connection and love we share are the same as it has always been.

So dye some eggs, host a seder dinner, or organize a neighborhood egg hunt. However you celebrate the Easter season, Spring is a magical time to be in South Jersey, and I hope that you can stop and smell the flowers.

In this issue is Shore Local, we welcome James Fitzpatrick as Editor. James comes with a wealth of experience and we are so excited to have him on our team!

Volunteers Prepare Somers Mansion Gardens

Let It Grow

erhaps you are familiar with the historic Somers Mansion high on the hill in Somers Point, Atlantic County’s oldest historic house. But have you ever ventured to the colonial-inspired gardens in the back of the historic house? The Green Thumb Garden Club of Somers Point plants, maintains, and harvests the raised beds of the Mansion’s kitchen garden. Recently they put the call out for help preparing the beds for spring planting.

On Wednesday, March 30, volunteers from the community and Garden Club answered the call with an overwhelming response, bearing shovels, wheelbarrows, and elbow grease.

Plans for the various raised beds include planting a “Three Sisters” garden based on a garden method taught to the colonials by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. In this method of planting, the Three Sisters—-corn, beans, and squash—are planted together for their symbiotic relationship that gardeners today refer to as companion planting. The corn serves as a trellis for the beans. In turn, the beans provide nutrients to the corn and squash by fixing nitrogen in the soil. The large leaves of the squash plant help suppress weeds.

The Garden Club also plans to plant one of the front garden beds with sunflowers, Ukraine’s national flower.

Evans said the garden will be planted in Ukraine’s honor “like a prayer for peace.” The Green Thumb Garden Club also plans to sell mammoth

sunflowers and “peas for peace” with miniature Ukrainian flags at this year’s Bayfest in Somers Point.

In addition to the Somers Mansion garden, the Green Thumb Garden Club participates in various beautification projects throughout Somers Point including planters at the four corners leading to the Ocean City bridge, containers at the Gateway Playhouse, gardens at the Somers Point Library, and the butterfly garden at JFK park. Skating with Purpose in AC

ozens gathered at Back Sov Skatepark on Saturday, April 2nd, to lend a hand in cleaning up an area of Atlantic City that is deeply meaningful to local skaters and community members. The Back Sov skatepark, located on Sovereign Avenue across the water from Bader

Field, is where skateboarders come to find solace. While the park was officially recognized by the city in 2019, the local skateboarding community has gathered in the area for over ten years. For Skate AC President Jay Klotz, the skatepark means so much more than a place to put down wheels.

“We are providing opportunities that my friends and I didn’t have growing up around here,” shares Klotz. “There were limiting beliefs about skateboarding culture, so we always felt like we didn’t have a place to belong. We try our best to make sure the kids around here feel appreciated.”

↘Continued from 15 Along with the Skate AC team, Klotz actively advocates for skateboarding culture, shining a light on the mental health benefits of skating and the communal love, support, and camaraderie shared by those who come to Back Sov. “Skateboarding has blessed me with so much abundance in my life,” shares Klotz. “It opens people up to so many other industries and creative pursuits. That is what I would love for people to realize.”

It is no secret that mental health and addiction plague today’s youth.

According to a study conducted

by USC, skateboarding and skateboarding culture have been found to improve mental health, foster community, and encourage diversity. The results of this study are not lost on Klotz and the Skate AC crew, who

have not only relied on skating for their own well-being over the years but are passionate about giving the gift of skateboarding to today’s youth.

“I study the mind a lot,” explains Klotz. “One thing I’ve found is that skateboarding is proven to increase serotonin and dopamine levels. My buddies and I want other people to feel and experience what skating offers. The biggest motivating factor has always been what this park can do for people’s day-to-day lives and mental health.”

This is why the Skate AC crew is so committed to maintaining the Back Sov skatepark. Back Sov gives skaters of all ages a place to gather, learn to skate, try new tricks, and build a family.

the Vans Skateboard team coming to give out shoes to local kids, skate jam contests, and most recently, skatepark cleanups.

“For many years, the space was a forgotten about lot of land with broken glass and old batting cages,” says 33-year-old Klotz. “With the expansion of Stockton’s University District, this neighborhood has become something that is desirable. We’re excited about that and want to work shoulder-to-shoulder with them to positively influence the neighborhood.”

Hence, the April 2nd community cleanup where over 30 people gathered to pick up trash, brush away broken sidewalk glass, and show up for each other. Following the cleanup, volunteers were invited back to Tony’s Baltimore Grill to feast on pizza donated by the local’s favorite pizza shop. The Skate AC team is hopeful for the future with plans to incorporate more lighting, security cameras, and safety precautions at Back Sov that encourage skaters to hang out year-round.

“The best thing about Skate AC/ Back Sov is the community that was created around a love of skateboarding,” explains Skate AC co-founder Zach Katzen. “We have been coming together to clean up our neighborhood for the past ten years. Through it all, we continue to show up for each other. Whether it’s helping a kid with a trick or taking the weekend to move a ramp across the state, this community constantly shows up for each other, and I think that is evident when you see the love shown at our cleanup.”

In addition to the forthcoming park cleanups, Skate AC will also be

introducing free skateboard lessons for all ages. Klotz, who recently moved back to Atlantic City, spent the last several years learning how to professionally instruct aspiring skaters. The upcoming lessons are being sponsored by Lipstick Skateboards, a non-profit committed to empowering youth through skateboarding, which will be providing boards to those who don’t own one.

Skate AC is a 501c3 organization made possible through the love and support of board members like Geoff Dorsey, community members like Jill Fermonte, advocacy and guidance from Zach Katzen, and so many more individuals who have come together to celebrate the local skateboarding community.

Another woman who was enjoying the beach with her family said how impressed she was that Manchin’s children surfed. When Manchin asked if the woman’s children could surf, the woman hesitated. “We don’t know how, and I don’t know how they would learn,” she said.

At that moment, Manchin had a vision. The Manchin family would soon create Raising Surfers, an online

jewelry and merchandise marketplace that donates a portion of its proceeds to fund surfing lessons all over the country.

South Jersey locals already donate to surf shops like Seventh Street and Heritage, which host giveaways for surf instruction. But Manchin had bigger ambitions, hoping to have a broader impact in different ways.

Whether through surf lesson giveaways at other surf shops trade arrangements, Raising Surfers has a mission is to support swimming and surfing education from coast to coast.

“Our goal is to break the stigma that you have to know what you’re doing to surf,” the Cape May Court House said. “Especially in these dark times, we want to give people permission to simply be. They don’t have to be the best, or even stand up. There is something deep and rich and awesome about just being a part of the waves.”

Raising Surfers offers a diverse line of earrings, necklaces, rings and bracelets that reflect the seashore theme in name and style. Examples include The Shoreline bangle bracelet, The Lola necklace and the Mother Gypsea, honoring Sue McElwee, who creates stunning shell art on the beach in Ocean City.

Fittingly, her namesake is a necklace with a golden shell.

Manchin designs her own jewelry which is produced by various manufacturers. It's hypoallergenic, tarnish-free and waterproof. The business also sells surf dog collars, tube socks and Raising Surfers apparel.

“I wanted to create beautiful pieces that honored important things in my life,” said Manhcin. “These are good quality pieces at reasonable prices that last for years to come.”

In the winter, Raising Surfers funds swimming lessons for people who have not had the privilege of learn-

ing to swim and perhaps are fearful around water. Drowning is one of the top causes of death in children. After being personally touched by this kind of tragedy, Manchin decided that teaching swimming had to be the first step in her mission to promote surfing.

“Whenever we surf, I always think of my dad, who loved spending time on the beach,” said Manchin. “Everything we do and pass on to the next generation, I know that I am making him proud. It’s a part of our family tradition and I hope it becomes a part of yours.”

Doo Dah Parade and Great Egg Hunt

P

hiladelphia Flyers legends Jimmy and Joe Watson will be grand marshals for the 2022 Doo Dah Parade in Ocean City on Saturday (April 9).

The brothers were both part of the Broad Street Bullies team that won two Stanley Cup titles in the 1970s, and they are both members of the Philadelphia Flyers Hall of Fame. They still live in the Philadelphia area and are a lot of fun when they’re together.

They will be available for free photographs and autographs after the parade at the Ocean City Music Pier on the Boardwalk at Moorlyn Terrace.

The Doo Dah Parade is Ocean City’s season-opening celebration of all things humorous. The procession features marching bands, floats and a brigade of hundreds of basset hounds.

The parade starts at noon Saturday.

The route starts at Sixth Street and travels downtown Asbury Avenue to 12th Street, then turns to the Boardwalk at 12th Street and finishes on the boardwalk at Sixth Street.

Some highlights will include the Ocean City High School Red Raiders Marching Band, the Hobo Band, the Jersey String Band, Crescent Shri-

My favorites wines to sip into Spring

s the weather gets warmer and we transition out of winter coats and boots and into t-shirts and sandals, many of us transition the beverages in our glasses, as well. In the world of wine, spring is rosé season, and we are excited to see pink wines back on our shelves here at Passion Vines. In addition to these rosy wines, we’re seeing an ever-increasing variety of

canned cocktails, spritzers, and other ready-to-drink beverages. These offer fun, light, and delicious options for parties and outdoor events, as well as everyday drinking. I’ve included some additional information below, along with some of my favorite picks of the moment.

Rosé All Day When it comes to rosé wine, the first thing I like to mention is that pink does not mean sweet. While some pink wines do have a higher level of residual sugar, many classic styles of rosé are dry, with bright fruit and a solid backbone of acidity. Most rosé wines get their color from minimal

exposure to grape skins during the winemaking process, which imparts delicate flavors and a range of pink hues.

Cantina Santa Maria La Palma Aragosta Rosé (12.99; Sardinia): A bright blend of Italian grapes Cannonau and Cagnulari, along with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, this dry, fruit-driven wine hails from the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. The population of Sardinia is renowned for their health and longevity, and we think the local wine may have something to do with it – Cannonau is extremely high in antioxidants!

Domaine Clo La Petite Bete Rosé (reg. $23.87, sale 13.99; Loire Valley, France): Fresh and mouth-filling, this rose-hued wine is made from Gamay (the star grape of France’s Beaujolais region).

A century of music on the pier A Look Back

No look back at the 20th century in Ocean City would be complete

without mention of the two piers the city built at Moorlyn Terrace and the Boardwalk.

On Saturday, April 22, 1905, Mayor Joseph G. Champion led the ceremony opening the new Boardwalk and the dedication of the Music Pavilion.

built several hundred feet nearer the sea than the old one, was two miles long and 32 feet wide. The pavilion, which was finished by July 4, 1905, was 118 feet long and 68 feet wide.

The following is from a 1906 publicity brochure: “The public music pavilion will be a center of social activity. In 1928, the Music Pavilion was moved to Sixth Street and the Boardwalk where it became Convention Hall. It was destroyed by fire on March 20, 1965.

History repeated itself on July 4, 1928 when Mayor Joseph G. Champion led the ceremony opening the new Boardwalk and new Music Pier.

The Music Pier opened in 1929. The lookout tower was added in 1941. It was manned 24 hours a day to watch for enemy aircraft during World War II. The new Boardwalk, built several hundred feet nearer the sea than the old one, had a concrete base from Sixth to Twelfth streets. While the Boardwalk was ready for the summer of 1928, only the front of the Music Pier was finished. On that part, Mayor Champion attached a bronze plaque listing the names of those responsible for the newest pier in America’s greatest family resort.

The Music Pier was completed by the summer of 1929 and with band concerts every afternoon and evening, it was the entertainment center of the resort.

The Music Pier continues to be Ocean City’s most famous and cherished landmark in the 21st century.

Making Friends as an Adult: Mission Impossible?

I

think we can all agree “adulting” is not easy. If you want to do it right, it takes time. With the monsoon of life obligations thrown at us, it’s easy to put your relationships or even the feeling of wanting more of them in your life, on the back burner.

Alas, my reader comrades, we must be willing to put ourselves out there in situations where we feel out of our comfort zones. If we don’t, we’re in danger of living out our lives friendless. In my case, that is a sad reality. To avoid this, here are a couple ways to position your mindset and yourself in situations conducive to meeting potential new friends.

Assume That People Like You A lot of what stops someone from starting anything is the personal narrative that, for whatever reason, “people don’t like me." With that thinking, you won’t leave the house, let alone be vulnerable enough to put yourself out there

to make new friends. Never fear; this one is an easy fix. So easy it’s a cliché: fake it til’ you make it. Studies have shown that if you are led to believe the person you are about to meet already likes you, you will act in ways that make this belief more likely to come true.

Initiate There is a myth that friendship happens organically, and maybe that was true in grade school. Heck, making friends growing up depended less on liking the same things and more on being in the same class. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case anymore. If you want to make new friends, you have to put in real effort, and you have to say ‘yes’ when someone puts in the effort towards you.

Commit Look for events you can attend together. This may seem obvious, but we’re not just talking about buying tickets to a show two months from now. Think about ongoing events like book clubs, cooking classes, or an adult sports league. Science tells us people are more inclined to like someone if they know they will see them again. If that’s not enough incentive for you, signing up for classes, a league of some kind, etc... will most likely come with some financial aspect. So, if you’re not going to do it to solidify a friendship, do it to not lose whatever financial in-

vestment you put in.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with a few ideas for meeting new people.

Tips for meeting new people ● Explore local library boards – yes, they still exist, and they are still helpful. ● Get a dog (Then get the app “Paway”) ● Read Shore Local on a bench on the boardwalk (We’re a great conversation starter.) Always pick up two copies for a guaranteed connection, one for you and one for the friend you’re about to meet. ● Look for volunteering opportunities.

Help yourself while helping others.

Win-win. ● Try out apps like Meetup, Reddit, and Nextdoor – All suited to help you find people in your area with your interests. ● Reconnect with old friends. While looking for new friends, try recon-

necting with old ones. You might be surprised how easy it is to pick up where you left off with certain people from your past. ● Start your own group. Maybe you’re not finding what you’re looking for.

Chances are, other people feel just like you… and it’s your job to find them. ● Join a gym - And if you don’t make new friends, at least you’re in better shape! ● Introduce yourself – It’s oddly hard sometimes, but (and here’s another cliché’ alert) strangery are friends you haven’t met yet. Say hi; the worst thing that can happen is that they don’t respond. But more often than not, you’ll find you aren’t the only person looking for genuine connections.

And if none of that works, always remember to carry around a pack of gum. Few people don’t like the person who always has a stick of gum when you need it.

wo years ago, art galleries throughout our area closed their doors because of COVID-19, leaving a much-needed void in accessing culture and music. It was during this absence that the art community came together in a new form. Nashville North Studios in Linwood launched a YouTube page, allowing visitors to access the gallery an entire selection of paintings. Monthly art talks were also presented in a virtual setting, with music provided by extraordinary local talent.

Nashville North Studios has since re-opened its doors, focusing on a new, local artist each month during their Fourth Friday open houses.

Each show includes a solo and group exhibition, in addition, to live music and pleasant conversation among attendees.

Their recent opening of DaVinci to Dali presented the works of two immersive artists, Jack McGovern and William McKenzie. A former teacher in the Toms River School System, McGovern has been creating art for as long as he can remember.

“My parents didn’t always understand what I was doing, but they were encouraging.”

After 25 years in the education field, McGovern retired and began perusing his passion for art. In recent years, he has created visually stunning pieces depicting a person in motion using watercolors on print.

Jack lost his brother, Jim McGovern, to Alzheimer’s ten years ago, and has used drawings of dance and photographic images in his body of work.

“It’s very exciting when you put the brush to the paper and the colors and translucency of the watercolor just vibrates.” Says McGovern.

Also on display recently is the work of the late artist William McKenzie. Born in Dallas, PA, McKenzie loved art all his life, sketching and drawing at a young age. Following a career in real estate, he began painting, often showing not on the trauma in his life, but also the joy, according to his wife Joanne. “Our faith is very important to both of us and we share that.”

McKenzie came from an artistic background. William’s uncle, Richard Perdunn, was an artist for the Saturday Evening Post. Later in life, he had taken several lessons, studying under Floyd Norman and Jane Whiting Chrzanoska, but was mainly self-taught.

McKenzie’s work has been showcased in multiple galleries, including the Manhattan, Millville Galleries, and Norman Galleries in Geneva, NY. Joanne McKenzie says his work is one of a kind. “He couldn’t duplicate one of his (paintings). To me, that’s how valuable they are.”

Recent visitors to Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge have spotted a pair of bald eagles, nesting high above the trees, along the southern tip of Lily Lake, a rare sighting that has captured the attention of even the most amateur nature enthusiast.

The Forsythe refuge began in 1939, with the purpose of protecting the American Brant and American black ducks which frequent our region during the winter. In the 1960s, devel-

Brants enjoy grazing on Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge plants, relying heavily on large green is located at 723 Great Creek Road, algae and eelgrass as their main source of food. They often winter along estuaries, saltmarshes, and barrier islands.

Gaggles of snow geese have appeared at the refuge in recent months. Seeing this species up-close can be a special treat, so be sure to have your best high-quality camera.

Ospreys can be spotted at various points along Wildlife Drive. It is not hard to find a mating pair tending to its nest during the earliest months of spring and beyond. Be on the lookout for egrets; these beautiful birds will often nest in marshes, where they feed on insects, fish, and reptiles. Hawks are frequent visitors to this remote stretch of land; seeing them in flight, with their impressive wingspan, can leave visitors in awe.

There are programs in place to manage and protect the vast area of land in Forsythe refuge. Research is being done to identify areas where the marsh may not be doing well, particularly in areas that were historically used as salt mining farms. FWS focuses on areas where the hydrology can be improved, and the marshes can be re-elevated. “It is an awesome industry, but there are long term impacts from that.” Rettig explains.

One of the biggest concerns at Forsythe is the growing concern over rising sea level, which can leave long-lasting impacts along our coastal communities. Warming temperatures

Atlantic Cape Restaurant Gala raises $240K to benefit culinary students

A

n astounding $240,775 was raised at the 39th annual Atlantic Cape Restaurant Gala, a scholarship fundraiser for students in the Academy of Culinary Arts.

“This year’s Gala was the second highest-grossing since its inception.

We are incredibly grateful to Harrah’s, and the restaurant, hospitality, and gaming community for supporting the event and the students attending Atlantic Cape’s Academy of Culinary Arts,” said Maria Kellett, Associate Director of the Atlantic Cape Foundation and dean of Atlantic Cape Community College’s Cape May County campus. “Although our industry partners are facing challenges of their own as they recover from the pandemic, their commitment to Atlantic Cape has been nothing short of remarkable. Additionally, the response from our corporate sponsors and guests has also been overwhelmingly positive.”

Since it began in 1983, the Atlantic Cape Restaurant Gala has raised well over $3.8 million for scholarships for students attending the Academy of

Culinary Arts, which is currently celebrating its 40th year.

On Thursday, March 31, guests dined, danced, and dazzled as the Gala, themed “Immersion,” returned indoors at Harrah’s Waterfront Conference Center in Atlantic City.

This year’s Gala featured more than 40 area restaurants, businesses, bakeries, wineries, breweries, and distilleries. The Dirty Dance Band lit up the dance floor and ACA alumnus Peter Slavin wowed attendees with his ice sculpting demonstration.

“It’s been a rough two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but all of the sponsors, participating restaurants

and businesses, committee members, and patrons have shown up this year to support Atlantic Cape,” said Gala Co-Chairwoman Terry Budd, a member of the Atlantic Cape Foundation.

“This is a great comeback event for the Foundation and such a great success. I want to thank everyone for coming together for the good of the students and to raise thousands for scholarships.”

This year’s Gala planning committee was also co-chaired

by Cheryl Pivola, 1st Vice President of the Foundation Board, who passed away in early March. Pivotal, 53, of Somers Point, served on the Foundation Board since 2013 and was a tireless advocate for Atlantic Cape.

The Gala committee paid tribute to Pivola and dedicated the event in her honor Thursday.

The Gala each year also honors those who give back to the college.

Honorees for 2022 were retired ACA dean Chef Kelly McClay and community honoree, the Mullock Family of Cape May, whose philanthropic efforts over the years have benefitted not just the Atlantic Cape community, but the entire region.

“I am humbled to be receiving this honor.

The Academy of Culinary Arts holds a very special place in my heart. There is a tremendous sense of pride in having witnessed the efforts and successes of so many students who have gone on to become amazing culinary professionals,” McClay said. “The academy was founded to support the local industry and that we did, but our graduates have gone way beyond the borders of South Jersey.”

aster is less than two weeks away, so it’s time to start thinking about wearing pastels, hiding colorful eggs, and eating as much chocolate as possible. Growing up in South Jersey, I have always loved Easter by the shore. Every year, my family and I attend church together and stroll the boardwalk in the afternoon, typically snacking on chocolate-covered pretzels from the candy shops. Whether you are religious or simply a fan of bunnies, Easter brings families together to celebrate the changing of seasons and the joy of new life.

However, sometimes Easter dinners can be stale and monotonous (lots of ham and potatoes), so I

Ingredients: ● 1/2 cup of shredded carrot ● 1 small log of goat cheese ● 1 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce ● 1/4 cup of chopped walnuts ● 1 tsp of garlic powder ● 1/8 cup of dill ● 1/3 cup of shredded cheddar cheese (orange) ● Crackers ● 1 sprig of kale (for garnish) Use a food processor or blender to combine goat cheese, carrot, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, chopped walnuts, and dill until the mixture is creamy and smooth.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Eggs

Ingredients: ● 1 cup of powdered sugar ● 1/2 jar of creamy peanut butter ● 1 tsp of vanilla extract ● 1/2 cup of pretzels, chopped finely ● 2 cups of semisweet chocolate (baker’s chocolate, preferably) ● 1 can of condensed milk Using a stand mixer, combine sugar, vanilla, peanut butter, and pretzels.

Mix for about five minutes on medium until the mixture is evenly distributed.

Shape eggs out of the peanut butter mixture using a spoon. Make sure each egg is sized identically.

Boil water over medium heat in a saucepan and place a large metal bowl on top of the pot. Stir together chocolate and condensed milk until the chocolate is completely melted and creamy. Turn off the heat and let the chocolate cool for fifteen minutes.

Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Use a toothpick to dip each peanut butter egg into the chocolate, coating the egg completely. Place each one on the parchment paper and place the pan in the freezer for at least one hour.

Your perfect Easter dessert is ready to eat!

Monkey Bread

Ingredients: ● 1 cup of all-purpose flour ● 1 cup of white sugar ● 1/2 cup of brown sugar ● 1 tsp of vanilla ● 2 sticks of unsalted butter, melted ● 3 large eggs ● 1 tsp of baking powder ● 1 tsp of salt ● 1/8 cup of cinnamon ● 1 tsp of nutmeg ● 1 package of cream cheese (2 blocks) ● 3 cups of powdered sugar ● 1 tsp of almond extract In a large bowl, mix hand flour, baking powder, and salt. A place to the side.

Use an electric mixer to blend white sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and 1 stick of melted butter. Once the mix-

ture is thick and batter-like, slowly stir in dry ingredients on low speed until the dough is moist and dense.

Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.

Use a spoon to separate the dough into balls (approximately 2 inches in diameter for each ball).

Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours.

In a microwaveable bowl, melt together 1 stick of butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg (approximately 2 minutes).

Dip each ball into the butter/spices and place in a large bundt cake mold.

Once all the balls are dipped and in the mold, toss additional brown sugar on top and bake at 400 degrees for 45 minutes.

Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and almond extract in a stand mixer on medium speed until frosting creates peaks.

Let monkey bread cool completely then top with frosting. This boardwalk staple will taste like heaven!

Panko-Crusted Rack of Lamb

Ingredients: 1-2 pasture-raised racks of lamb ● 3 sprigs of fresh rosemary ● 1 lemon, zested ● 3 cups of panko breadcrumbs ● Salt ● Pepper ● 1/4 cup of olive oil Score the outer layer of fat on the lamb and remove any additional soft tissue or bones.

In a large bowl, mix breadcrumbs, lemon zest, salt, pepper, and rosemary.

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees.

Place racks in a large roasting pan and pour olive oil over the meat, along with salt and pepper. Cover and roast for 3 and a half hours.

Let cool completely, then coat sides with breadcrumbs. Place back in the oven for another 20 minutes.

Top the lamb with additional rosemary or horseradish and your dinner guests will love it! ●

OCHS girls basketball controversy has only one solution

’ve never been so out of breath in my life. I’m heaving and my legs are on fire. And yet, I stumble to the foul line and receive the basketball.

I try to calm my breathing so I can focus because the eyes of my teammates are on me. With these two shots I will determine our fate.

I place my hands where I’ve been taught, position my right foot slightly ahead of my left, bend my knees and shoot. Then I shoot again.

Time to run two more sprints.

It’s 2014 and the Atlantic Christian School girls basketball team practice is almost finished. I’m a sophomore but I’m not a very good basketball player; softball was more my thing.

I’m heavier than most girls so I run slower and struggle with defense. But because I am a decent shooter and a ferocious rebounder, I take my seat every

game as a second-string player. I had a regular spot on the team, but that never changed how intensely I had to sprint at every practice. **** I was reminded of my years as a high school basketball player after reading about the allegations made by the Ocean City girls basketball team against their coach, Michael Cappelletti.

A member of the team read a letter to the Ocean City Board of Education at the Feb. 23 meeting asking that their coach’s contract not be renewed. The letter alleged that Cappelletti and his assistant coach Tim Kelley berate their players and abuse them by calling them harsh names.

Student Olivia Vanesko read the letter which stated in part: “There is no constructive criticism, just screaming or name-calling. We are here to stand up for what is right and simply the only option left in this situation. The administration has ignored us and our cries for help, even (going) as far as to tell us, ‘we are winning so it can’t be that bad’.”

The school board said it is investigating the situation and will review every claim made in the letter.

Alumni have been quick to come to the coach’s defense. On social media many have praised the positive impact he has had on the program's success and their own lives. Cappelletti, a longtime assistant to Paul Baruffi, was hired last year after Baruffi stepped down following a stellar career that included 300 wins as head coach of the Red Raiders.

Some of his defenders blame students and parents for having a sense of entitlement and failing to recognize that success must be earned through hard work, sacrifice and discipline. They also credit “Cap” with instilling pride and values that made them feel like they were part of something special.

As the stories have been published in local media outlets, the community has been quick to dismiss the students’ cries as an example of “cancel culture” or the oversensitivity of today’s youth. This is a dangerous way to view the world.

Victims cannot and should not be teased or harassed; they should always be listened to and taken seriously. It takes tremendous courage to call out abuse when it may be present and find a way to stop it.

These girls, as young students, have bravely spoken out to adults in powerful positions to amend their situation and heal their team. Unfortunately it has led to more emotional pain.

Coaches and trainers do not need to be aggressive to motivate a team. Sports are supposed to be fun and encourage participants to be active and come together for a common goal. Coaches should work for the players as they are hired to make the team better. High school sports teams are not supposed to be totalitarian entities.

The Ocean City basketball girls boldly wrote a letter to the school board fighting for their athletic journey and were ignored and even laughed at. If this “internal investigation” decides that it's easier to keep the once-beloved coach than to hire another, then the girls’ hard-fought struggle would have been for nothing. It would also prove that adults care more about their own interests than the students’ well-being.

Every generation is critical of the next, making fun of their mindsets, attitudes and beliefs. Some older folks believe that technology and social media have made Gen Z self-obsessed and too sensitive.

Even if this were true, biased and inaccurate stereotypes should not play a role in the school board’s decision about whether to renew Cappelletti’s contract.

If you work in a high school you should care about young people and enjoy spending time with them. It is wrong to put your interests above the population you are employed to serve.

One of the claims made in the letter is that Cappelletti unfairly favors his daughter who plays on the team. This type of

problem has plagued sports teams since the beginning of time. It is difficult to put aside one’s role as a parent and be a coach for the whole team while remaining fair and impartial.

If your parenting interferes with your care for the entire team, perhaps you shouldn't be coaching.

If a senator’s wife were being questioned and potentially confirmed for a Cabinet position, wouldn’t you worry that his vote would be motivated by his husbandly duty? In the same vein, coaches should not select starters for a team on which their child plays. Such conflict of interest is unethical and unfair to the other players.

It doesn’t matter what the alumni think because Cappelletti is in his first year as the head coach. It doesn’t matter what the community thinks because they have never witnessed one of the practices or team meetings the coach has led. This situation is between the players and their coach.

Because of the outcries from a majority of the team, the school board is rightfully investigating the circumstances and potentially whether or not to renew Cappelletti’s contract.

Even if they keep the coach, the negative press and hard feelings would follow him and the team into future seasons. In my opinion, the coach should find work elsewhere so these girls and the community can find peace.

Local moms speak out on autism awareness and acceptance Moms Vibe:

pril is Autism Acceptance Month. While you may be accustomed to hearing it referred to as Autism Awareness Month, the name change was encouraged by the Autism Society of America in 2021. This simple but necessary change shines a light on the difference between simply being aware that autism exists versus learning how to be more inclusive of those living with autism.

Approximately 1 in 44 children living in the United States has been identified as being on the autism spectrum, which means every one of us will inevitably know and love an autistic child or many in this lifetime. It is important to not just be aware but to understand how to work towards more inclusivity and understanding in schools, at work, and in our community. Who better to ask for advice than mothers?

We asked a group of moms of autistic children what they wanted the world to know about autism. The responses shared

two common threads: patience and respect.

As the writer of this article who does not have an autistic child, I felt it was not my place to change the wording in the responses below. The following quotes are from real, local moms sharing their insight and love.

The question: “What do you wish people knew/understood/thought twice about when it comes to loving your child. If you could shout it from the rooftops, what would you tell the world?”

The responses: “Give them time. Give them space. Don’t expect them to answer you immediately.

Count to 30 before you ask again. Don’t force them to make eye contact with you.

Be very specific with your words. When you say ‘in a minute,’ make sure you truly mean in 60 seconds. Ask if you can touch them. If they say no, don’t get your feelings hurt. Be in the moment with them. Give them space.”

“They are not defined by autism!! They have many capabilities!”

“Try not to judge when they communicate differently than you’re used to or if

they’d rather not communicate. Chances are they have worked very hard to develop coping mechanisms to be in social situations.  They aren’t trying to be disrespectful to you, so don’t take it personally.”

“Just because he’s just learning to speak doesn’t mean he doesn’t understand.”

“They can hear you. Just because a child may be nonverbal, it does not mean they cannot hear, understand, and feel words.”

“If you met one person with autism, then you met one person with autism. They are all different and should be treated as individuals. Just because he’s different and he struggles with a group doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to be more involved. Have patience, kindness, and understanding.”

“Treat them like anyone else. But understand they may not reply as a "typical" child would. They have their own personalities and interests just like anyone else would.

Just accept them for who they are and where they are.”

“Autism doesn’t define who your child is because they are amazing and unique individuals with beautiful personalities. My daughter reminds me each day, just with a smile and a hug, that I am doing the best I

can as her mom.”

As a mother, I know that it takes a village. While the village may look different than it once had, it is still our responsibility to love on the children in our communities to the best of our ability. Autistic children are extraordinary little humans who make the world around us all the more beautiful.

It’s important for me to read stories from other moms who are tasked with parenting a little bit differently than I do and to teach my children how to be inclusive. While we honor and celebrate awareness months with a great deal of respect, it is important to remember that any day, week, or month is a great opportunity to learn more about the lives of others and the challenges that they face. Learning how to be more inclusive begins with being informed. I encourage you to ask another mother how you can better love, accept, and include their child, whatever their unique gifts may be.

he commercial real estate market in Margate is about to go through some dramatic changes. With the boom in the housing market, the value of commercial properties has become more attractive to convert them into luxury housing.

You are seeing everything from landmark restaurants like Liang's House Asian restaurant hit the market for $1,990,000 to the Baker Burger which is listed at $3,199,000.

The town would like a commercial presence maintained on the lower level, but the value of the properties is in the residential component above the stores. Another landmark location that is currently on the market is 8 Essex Avenue. This location is better known as the home of the famous Down Beach Deli. Hopefully, new buyers will maintain the current uses or attract new entrepreneurs.

It appears that restaurants are not the only properties being purchased.

The Sunoco business located at 7701 Ventnor is currently under agreement. We will have to wait to see if this property will be converted into residential. The shore communities are struggling to maintain a balance between commercial and residential.

We must be careful and make sure we have things for people to do and go

out to eat when they visit the Jersey Shore.

When you go throughout Margate you must notice that there is new construction everywhere (approximately 80 new construction permits).

Smaller homes are being torn down to make way for large beautiful new homes. Values have escalated beyond the imagination. We are seeing values increase at rates of 25% and more. If interest rates don’t increase substantially, we should continue to see a booming market. Some people are cashing out with the tremendous increase in values and buying lesser value homes on the mainland ie. 55+ communities. The challenge if you sell high, you must buy high now.

The bottom line nothing is forever. It is fortunate Margate is a great City that has passionate people who care about their community. When new plans are proposed, they are carefully reviewed so they will maintain the quaint small town feeling that makes it such a special Jersey Shore Town.

ith all due respect to the 1963 Andy Williams song about the holidays, I would argue that THIS is the most wonderful time of the year.

Just think about all the great sporting activity that is going on right now.

We just had the Final Four and National Championship game for March Madness.

The Phillies will be ready for Opening Day by the time you read this. The Sixer's last regular-season game is scheduled for April 10th with the playoffs looming, as their big man is boosting his MVP resume. The Eagles are making bold moves in advance of the NFL draft, and the Flyers are playing out the regular season. Oh, and my favorite golf tournament of the entire season is poised to begin in Augusta, Georgia, The Masters.

On the local front, I was honored to be the MC for the 65th-anniversary banquet for a youth football league. Plus, an EHT native playing pro baseball has his “marching orders”. Finally, I hope you’ll allow me a brief non-sports item as I want to acknowledge two men who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Entertainment, “Mrs. Costanza” from the show “Seinfeld” passes away.

Plus, it’s been the “slap heard ‘round the world” from the Oscars. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● As I write this, we are fresh off the National Championship Game where

Kansas wins a thriller 72-69 and the Jayhawks cut down the nets. The last #1 team remaining in the Big Dance ends up the National Champions as they win with the biggest comeback in championship history. They were down by 16 points to North Carolina in the first half, but the Jayhawks roar back in the second 40 minutes to win it all. Down 40-25 at the half, Kansas outscores the Tar Heels 4729 in the second half to win it. The Jayhawks win their fourth overall title and first since 2003.

Allow me to back up a bit to the Final Four weekend though as what a collection of teams that ended up in New Orleans. Villanova, Kansas, Duke & North Carolina all made the trip to the Big Easy as many folks called it the “Blue Bloods Final Four”. My first thought with that is, what a compliment to Villanova to be included in that description. My second thought is, that the Wildcats from Villanova tried their hardest but just ran out of “gas” in the national semifinal losing 81-65 to Kansas. In that game, Villanova committed four turnovers before the Wildcats could even score their second basket, while Kansas jumped out to a 10-0 lead, establish-

Simply put, what else does the big fella have to do? It will be a travesty if he doesn’t win the award.

One more item about Embiid. He has 11 games this season with at least 40 points and 10 rebounds. The only players with more in a season since the merger are Russell Westbrook (12 in 2016-17) and Moses Malone (12 in 1981-82). Both won the MVP that season.

In football, Howie Roseman and the Eagles make a bold move in advance of the NFL draft on April 28th by pushing one of their three first-rounders back into 2023 as a result of a blockbuster trade with the New Orleans Saints. You’ll recall the Eagles had picks 15, 16, and 19. Well, now they have the 15th and 18th picks in this year’s draft and also got a third-round pick from the Saints. In total, the Eagles gave up No. 16 and No. 19 as well as a sixth-rounder this year in exchange for the 18th, 101st (third round), and 237th (seventh round) picks this year, a first-round pick next year, and a second-rounder in 2024. At first glance, the trade makes plenty of sense for the Eagles from a value standpoint. If you negate the Eagles’ slight move from 19th overall to 18th, the trade boils down to the Eagles giving up the 16th pick for a third-round pick this year, a 2023 first-rounder, and a 2024 second-rounder. Count me in the camp that thinks the Eagles won this trade already.

Of course, you’re only as good as the players you select, and many

critics think the Eagles aren’t good at picking talent. One thing this does accomplish is it allows the Eagles to spend one more season finding out if Jalen Hurts is the answer or not. If he is, they use the picks to build around him. If he isn’t, they have the draft capital to move up and get what they want. That’s a “win-win” in my book.

Again, the NFL draft begins Thursday, April 28th in Las Vegas. The Eagles now have 10 total picks in the draft. They have five in the first three rounds, which includes two of their own, two from New Orleans, and one from Miami.

My lone Flyers item concerns defenseman Keith Yandle, who saw his consecutive games streak end the other weekend at 989 games. None other than NHL Hall of Famer Jeremy Roenick criticized the Flyers for not letting Yandle reach 1,000 consecutive games, which no NHL-er has ever done. My take is, that the guy wasn’t playing at an NHL level to deserve to keep his spot! 23-year-old Ronnie Attard made his NHL debut in place of the 35-year-old Yandle. At some point, you have to look at the young guys, and I don’t have a problem with Yandle sitting. I’m also excited to see what 23-year-old Noah Cates can do.

With 20-year-old Bobby Brink on the way as soon as Frozen Four semifinalist Denver wraps up its season, the “Youth Movement” in Philly has officially begun.

April 10th. This is nothing short of a miracle as he admitted that amputation of his right leg following a horrific car accident in February of 2021 was a possibility. The five-time Masters champion and the 15-time major champion haven’t played in a PGA Tour event in more than 17 months, but if he can just tee it up to start the tournament, that will be an amazing accomplishment. That said, can you imagine if he’s in contention?

On the local front, I was honored to be the MC for the 65th ACJFL Banquet at Bally’s AC on Friday, March 25th. The theme was “One League for One Night” and it was cool to see almost 500 people pack the main ballroom at Bally’s to honor many of those who founded the league, played in the league, coached in the league, or cheered in the league.

Don’t forget the cheerleaders! Former Eagles QB and ESPN personality Ron Jaworski was the keynote speaker, Jim Heisler, Ron Jordan & Lou Napolitano were 50-year legacy honorees. Frank Fucetola, Ed Johnson, A.J. Russo, Judith Lathan, and Sherri Hicks were Distinguished Service honorees.

And here was the cool part. 11 of the 13 guys with ties to the ACJFL (Atlantic County Junior Football

League) that eventually played, coached, or worked in the NFL were on hand. This list was awesome as Abdullah Anderson, Brandon Bell, Terry Bradway, Joe Callahan, Brent Caprio, Wayne Colman, Doug Colman, Michael Curcio, Dino Hall, Greg Roman & Dave Klemic were in attendance. Tom Bradway and John Stone were not able to be there, and we know we couldn’t connect with a few like Greg Buttle, Pete Hunter, William Green, and others. But how cool is that when you have a youth football league that produces so much NFL talent over the years? It was a great night!

I like to provide an update on EHT native Mike Adams and his dream of pitching in the big leagues for the Phillies when I can. Adams appeared

in two Grapefruit League games with the Phils this spring and pitched well.

He told me via text that the plan is for him to start the season at Double-A Reading and the coaches have told him to “keep doing what you’re doing”. With Mother’s Day just about a month away (May 8th), I thought I’d include a picture of Mike and his mom Joan. We are ALL pulling for you, Mike Adams!

My last local item is non-sports, but still important as it was a poignant afternoon last Sunday at Tropicana as my former TV 40 colleague Michelle Dawn Mooney and I was asked once again to be co-hosts for the 200 Club of Atlantic & Cape May Counties Memorial Brunch. The 200 Club, for those of you who may not know, is a great organization that provides support and financial assistance to the families of police, firefighters, and emergency personnel who pass away while “on the job”. Every year we hope the roll call list doesn’t get any longer, but this year we honored state trooper Matthew D. Razukas & Atlantic City Firefighter Anthony M. Carfagno. Folks, for me, this is one of the most important charity events that I attend and MC each year. I’d love it if you’d support them.

Best known for playing George’s mother Estelle Costanza on the show “Seinfeld”, Harris was known to millions despite appearing in only 27 episodes of the show. She made her debut on the series in a famous episode called “The Contest”, which to me is one of the funniest half-hour episodes of network TV comedy EVER. Her shrill screeching voice and sarcasm led to a memorable voice role as Mrs. Potato Head in the “Toy Story” franchise as well. Harris was 93. ● My final item is about the Oscars and the whole Will Smith / Chris Rock situation. Like most, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, and I was really sad that the entire incident took away from some other memorable moments during the show.

In my opinion, violence and striking someone is NEVER the answer, and I hope that Smith gets the help and counseling it appears that he needs.

AC icon collects rain boots for kids

t's true that April showers bring May flowers, but they also bring puddles! Many children must walk through these conditions to get back and forth to school each day.

Many would agree that there’s no worse feeling than wet socks under shoes you have to wear all day. That's a feeling Angela Burton hopes to eliminate for children in need through her initiative "Rainboots for Children."

Burton is collecting Rain Boots for Children through her 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Creative Multi Media. Established in 2019 by Burton and her sister Saundra Adams-Stephens, the nonprofit organization is

based in South Jersey. Creative Multi Media emphasizes the impor tance of community and cultivates creative spaces and events that highlight local artists and community leaders.

Though the nonprofit was officially formed in 2019, the now-famous award show has been a tradition since 2014. The Creative Multi Media Organization, a 501(c)(3) was formerly known as The Black History Awards,

Raw food diets for pets

umors about raw food are rampant. Let’s set the facts straight by looking at five common falsehoods about feeding dogs and cats a raw food diet.

Although raw feeding isn’t new, it’s still not widely understood. Many people remain wary about offering their dogs and cats a raw diet due to the volume of misleading information that’s been shared over the years. In this column, we’ll debunk a few of the common myths about raw food for pets and look at why this dietary option is actually one of the most nutritionally beneficial choices you can make for your fur baby.

No. 1. Raw food is unsafe There’s no getting around it – handling raw meat poses a risk. But chances are you handle it when cooking for your human family members, right? There’s really no difference when it comes to safe practices for handling raw pet food.

The key is to avoid using wooden cutting boards, dishes and utensils, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water after handling the meat. Many companies offer easy-to-open, pre-portioned packaging to make the process of being safe even simpler.

Worried about your pet getting a foodborne illness? Fear not. Cats’ and dogs’ digestive systems are much shorter and more acidic than ours, meaning they’re designed to take on any bacteria that may be present in their food.

No. 2. Raw feeding takes a lot of work It’s true that feeding a raw diet to pets used to be quite complicated; it involved a lot of pre-planning, portioning and preparation. But nowadays, due to the steps companies are taking to pre-portion their raw meals and include the appropriate amounts of bone, organ and supplements, raw feeding has never been easier.

If you opt for a frozen raw option, food for up to four days can be defrosted at the same time (stored in the fridge), so you don’t have to take food out of the freezer every day.

No. 3. A raw food diet is unaffordable As with any diet, the amount you spend will depend on the size of your pet. If you have a Chihuahua or a tabby cat, you’ll need to spend a lot less on pet food than someone who has three Great Danes. Pound for pound, raw is slightly more expensive than most kibbles or canned foods. But over the long term, opting for a higher-quality diet will end up saving you money.

No. 4. A raw food diet for dogs consists of just raw meat If you’ve never fed raw before, it would be easy to assume that the diet consists of nothing but raw meat. The assumption is incorrect.

Proper raw diets for dogs and cats are made up of meat, bone, organ meats, vegetables and supplements. All of these elements are needed in proper proportions to ensure that your pet maintains their health.

This is the problem with providing "homemade diets.” The pet will often pick out what he/she likes versus what is good for them. Plus, you need to add vitamins, minerals, fatty acids and more to keep it balanced.

No. 5. You can’t feed both raw and kibble It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. In fact, if you’re considering switching your pet to a raw diet, it’s best to make the transition slowly over a period of one to two weeks.

Tip: Supplementing your pet’s kibble-based diet with raw food is an affordable way to give his diet a boost. This is how many of my clients start. By the way, your pet will love you for this real food.

Le Dîner en Blanc makes its debut in Atlantic City

icture this: a crowd of people; dressed in white, elegant clothing; all enjoying a meal that they brought themselves on furniture they also provided themselves. It sounds crazy, but this is the concept of Le Dîner en Blanc. The worldwide phenomenon sees people gather at an iconic landmark in whatever location the dinner is taking place and participate in an evening of great food, company, and ambiance. In his relentless pursuit to promote Atlantic City, Bart Blatstein, owner and founder of Tower Investments and owner of Showboat Hotel, has partnered with the world-famous event to come to our great city.

The event was originally founded in 1988 when a man called François Pasquier organized a dinner with friends

in a popular park in Paris, France, with very specific instructions: bring your food, invite an interesting guest, and dress completely in white so everyone is easily identifiable. The event now spans six continents in over 90 cities.

Each year, it draws more than 100,00 people, and in 2017, 27 countries and 76 cities hosted this one-of-a-kind event.

Current editions occur in places such as Sydney, New York, Dubai, Barcelona, and now for the first time, Atlantic City.

The exact time and location of Le Dîner en Blanc are only shared with a select few people before it takes place.

With so many notable landmarks in Atlantic City, there are several possible places the inaugural Dîner en Blanc could take place. From world-class beaches to historical buildings such as the Showboat, there are endless options that can exhibit all that Atlantic City has to offer.

Each city has a unique hosting team comprising passionate, local organizers who bring their flair to the event whilst honoring the core traditional values. Besides the three main rules, Le Dîner en Blanc holds itself to very high standards when it comes to how the event should be run. Guests must dress elegantly; only drink champagne and wine; and bring their refolding table

which must conform to a very specific size, two white chairs, a white picnic basket and/or bag including a gourmet meal for two, a white tablecloth, and cloth napkins, cutlery, dishware, and glassware. The list is a lot, sure.

However, the experience is what it is all about. Finally, and most importantly, you MUST bring a trash bag and clean up your garbage.

The event will take place rain or shine, and they state on their website that “each guests’ presence is necessary and mandatory, regardless of the weather.” So, in case it rains, you will need to bring a white or transparent raincoat, poncho, and/or umbrella.

For Mayor Marty Small, an event such as this has been a long time coming. In a recent press conference, he was elated as he announced, “My dream has become a reality.” With Small working with passionate entrepreneurs such as Blatstein and locations such as the Showboat, it was only a matter of time for something of this caliber to come to Atlantic City. The event is going to be great for the entire city, with several restaurants providing gourmet meal options which will be provided as a picnic. These will be announced nearer the time but expect to see some of your favorites offering options.

Rigorous planning goes into the event, with sections assigned very specifically. The protocol for the evening involves arriving by chartered bus or organized public transport to the secret location. Guests are then accompanied by their Table Leader who assigns their precise seating arrangements. Guests immediately set up their tables and chairs, and then wait for their entire row to set up before taking a seat.

Once settled, everyone then spontaneously lifts their white cloth napkins which indicates the beginning of the dinner. Everyone is then able to enjoy their food until the last person finishes, which is when the dance floor opens,

and everyone lights up their sparklers.

After an evening of dancing, everyone then cleans up their area and packs up their tables and chairs after an unforgettable night.

So, the question is, can you just show up? The answer in short – is no.

There is an exclusive waiting list to be invited. Registration takes place in three phases: Phase 1 is for members from the previous year and friends of the organization and leaders; Phase 2 is for friends “sponsored” by Phase 1 members, and Phase 3 is for people who sign up for the waiting list. Whoever signs up for the event is expected to bring another person as registration is always for two people and you sit opposite your guest at your table.

Registration for the Atlantic City event is currently closed to everyone; however, you can enter your email on their website (https://register.dinerenblanc.com/atlanticcity/en/register) to sign up to the waiting list to receive an invitation when registration opens in May. Just enter your email and click “validate” and you will receive an email with more details. According to the website, the event itself will take place in June; however, we won’t find out where until closer to the time. With it being Atlantic City’s first Le Dîner en Blanc, it is expected to draw a significant crowd, and you won’t want to miss out. It is going to be the talk of the town for weeks, so make sure you sign up early to get your spot for this magical night!

Batman originator and producer visits Stockton

Michael E. Uslan, New Jersey native, originator, and executive producer of the Batman movie franchise, was invited to Stockton University’s Atlantic City campus on Thursday, March 24. Speaking to an audience of nearly 200 people, Uslan discussed his love of Batman, comic books, and his first phone call from Stan

Lee, comic book writer and co-creator of the Marvel Universe.

Uslan grew up in the town of Bayonne. His dad was a stonemason who built homes from brick and mortar. “He couldn’t wait to get to work because he loved what he did,” recalled Uslan. His mom was a bookkeeper. At a young age, Uslan discovered his passion of comic books, superheroes, and television early in life. By the time he was 18 years old, he had already obtained over thirty thousand comic books dating back to 1936.

Uslan recalled one of the first comic books he had ever purchased in 1956. “I picked out a Batman Detective comic that had the Batmobile as an urban assault tank on it.” To him, the moment was special, but scary. “I was used to Superman on TV, and he was bright and friendly. It wasn’t until I was a more mature, sophisticated seven (years old) that I really felt more comfortable with Batman.”

As a junior at Indiana University Bloomington, the school’s College of Art and Sciences launched an experimental curriculum department, brokering new, innovative accredited courses. Uslan came up with the idea of teaching a course on comics as a form of modern folklore. He pitched his idea to the dean of the college and allowed him to teach a three-hour class on campus.

After graduating, Uslan entered the world of comic book writing. Hired by DC Comics, his credits include writing several Batman comics, DC’s version of The Shadow, and Beowulf. In 1979, Uslan, in addition to fellow producer Benjamin Melniker, purchased the film rights for the Batman franchise. For the last thirty plus year, not only has Uslan served as executive producer for all Batman film releases, but he has also produced notable films such as National Treasure, Constantine and Swamp Thing. Uslan’s autobiography “The Boy Who Loved Batman” was released in 2011 and is currently being adapted into a Broadway play.

Easter Traditions Around the World

hurch, peeps, Easter egg hunts, bunny pictures, and big dinners. That’s the traditional American Easter celebration, but what about worldwide?

Easter, at its roots, is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, though, over the decades, the holiday has become commercialized and celebrated in different ways by different cultures and religions.

Let’s take a look at some of the different ways Easter is celebrated around the world.

Florence, Italy For over 350 years, Italians have celebrated Easter with a tradition known as Scoppio del Carro, or “explosion of the cart.” The yearly event features an ornate cart filled to the brim with fireworks. Led by people in 15th-century costumes, the cart makes its way to the Duomo (Latin for the house of

God) where following Easter mass, the Archbishop of Florence lights the fireworks to signify a forthcoming good harvest.

Bermuda On the small, historically rich island of Bermuda, Easter weekend is filled with kites and hot cross buns.

Beginning on Good Friday, Bermudians gather on Horseshoe Bay to participate in the annual kite contest, where they fly homemade kites of all shapes and sizes.

Legend has it that a Sunday school teacher once flew a kite that looked like Jesus to visually teach children about Christ’s ascension. From there, the Good Friday Kite Festival was born. Bermudian Easter cuisine typically includes codfish cakes and hot cross buns, which began as a superstition that if a homeowner did not eat hot cross buns on Good Friday, their home would catch fire. The weekend culminates in Easter sunrise service at various churches around the island.

Bessières, France 15,000 eggs, 1 omelet. This unique

tradition began in 1973 on Easter Monday. Legend has it that when Napolean Bonaparte traveled through France, he spent one night in Bessieres. After enjoying an omelet from a local chef, he ordered the townspeople to gather in the village to collectively enjoy an omelet. The tradition has grown exponentially over the decades, once requiring only a few thousand eggs, the annual Easter omelet now includes over 15,000 eggs. The eggy ritual has also expanded to neighboring French towns.

Germany Easter fires are a tradition that spans hundreds of years.

From small candles to large bonfires, the fire signifies different things for different people. The tradition has evolved from what once was a way to usher in Spring and banish the cold of Winter to the Christian meaning that symbolizes the resurrection of Jesus, the light of the world. In more recent years, Easter fires have become a social gathering with plenty of food and drink. Fires typically stay lit through Easter Sunday and in some locations, continue

through Easter Monday, which is a national holiday in Germany.

Corfu, Greece On Holy Saturday on the Greek Island of Corfu, the streets are filled with broken pots. The annual “pot throwing” known as the “botides,” which is believed to have started between the 14th and 18th centuries, is said to ward off bad spirits. The exact origin of the tradition is unclear, however many locals believe that the pot throwing welcomes spring, symbolizing the new crops that will grow this season.

Spectators come from far and wide to witness the Easter tradition, typically taking a small piece of a broken pot home with them to symbolize good fortune and a fresh start.

From religious rituals to cultural superstitions and everywhere in between, the common thread on Easter weekend is always time with family.

However you celebrate, enjoy your time with the ones you love, take a deep breath, and look forward to the warmth of Spring.

ate Cunha has always been a casual baker, but after New Jersey passed their Cottage Kitchen Law (allowing everyday people to sell foods made from their home kitchens), she knew that her true destiny was to create French macarons.

Cunha woman worked at a local hospit al and was k n ow n for bringing in delicious cakes for staff birthday parties and special events.

“There was a Parisian-themed bridal shower coming up, and I was asked to make macarons,” said Cunha. “Macarons are delicate and very difficult to make, and even as an experienced baker, they didn’t turn out great. I found myself staying up late at night experimenting with recipes, desperate to get it right.

I made macarons for every occasion with my family and friends, and after several months, I finally got it right.”

niversaries and other celebrations.

Flavors range from raspberry to cake batter, cookies & cream to pistachio, fruity pebbles to matcha. As for her favorite flavor, Cunha is obsessed with cinnamon bun but will always be loyal to fudge brownie. Customers can customize their personal batch with edible glitter, luster dust, chocolate or candy drizzle, airbrushing or ink drawings. “For a special bridal batch, I wrote ‘Will you be my bridesmaid?’ for a customer. It was really fun,” said Cunha.

On April 23rd, Cunha will be showing off her creations at the Crafts & Collectibles Fair at the Physick Estate in Cape May. This summer, Cape May Macarons will be available at the Wildwood Farmers Market and the West Cape May Farmers Market.

“I think that what makes us special is, well, I am a one-woman show, running a small business,” said Cunha. “I am dedicated to the artistry of these cute, delicate little desserts, and I can focus completely on their perfection.

Local Travel Industry Expert Appointed to Island Advisory Board

y wife and I are Shoobies; that is to say, as our first winter as “Snowbirds” we are the unwelcome, but necessary out of towners to Florida. I have to say that after all the years and miles of our driving throughout the U.S., southern Florida has presented some new challenges due to the advanced age of many of the drivers. With limited neck mobility, delayed reaction times and macular degeneration of the locals, driving in this area has been a real puckering experience especially when you add the impatient hot rodders into the mix. We have been staying in a 55 and over community with the emphasis on “over” for the past four months. In addition to being Shoobies, we are also Newbie Shoobies and looked upon with curiosity at the pool complex. The pool is the social epicenter with people marking the very valuable territory of tables with pool umbrellas early in the day. The Olympic size swimming pool is dotted with people bobbing around like at a high school dance with gaggles of men together holding court and likewise with the women. My wife, an avid swimmer was swimming laps and one woman offended by her swimming prowess, made a move to block my wife’s way. My wife deftly swam around her, so the woman swung her hand to send a splash in her direction as a show of defiance. Me, seeing this as the equivalent of a white gloved smack across the face, proceeded to swim past the woman kicking as hard as I could and then exited the pool

hearing her screams of “Dude…DUDE! Message delivered; message received.

On another day, I was dozing on a lounge chair by the pool when someone yells out, HE NEEDS HELP, HE NEEDS HELP! I see a man doing a slow roll in the pool, did I mention there are no lifeguards. I instantly took my shirt/ glasses off and jumped into the pool the same time another man got there who announced he was a former Army medic. He took charge and together we carried the man out of the pool and waited for the ambulance. Apparently, this garnered some points with the regulars, and we gradually were taken into their confidence. In the end, spending months with these “old” people was inspiring. We met Murry who was born in Israel, has lived in the same Brooklyn apartment for over forty years. He was in the Israeli army and played professional soccer. He invited us to watch him play pickle ball. Murry was agile, fast and played with competitive fire that belied his years. Murry is 82. Marty is from Central Jersey and spends two hours in the pool everyday doing his exercises. We also see him walking around the complex. Marty is 88 and certainly doesn’t look it nor act it. He constantly refers to my wife as my daughter. Larry, our upstairs neighbor keeps us up to date on where the best places are to eat and Johnny, two doors down call us out at night to watch him expertly fly his drone. As our return to South Jersey is imminent, it is met with mixed feelings. It will be nice to get back to our children, grandchildren, beach, boardwalk and all that is familiar but we will miss the new friends we made and hope we can reunite next winter.

Especially that “splash lady” in the pool.

Life Begins at 80 A reader writes in

Octogenarians, people living eight plus decades, can accomplish much more if they don’t self-limit activities just because of a few numbers.

(A few too many?) Many years ago, there was a popular TV show called "Life Begins at 80." I now fall into that category.

I was 85 years old when the Pandemic came upon us. Many of us, especially those in our older phase of life, found the pandemic extremely intrusive to our lives. I fall into that category.

Social interaction became discouraged and I was furloughed from my volunteer position for Hospice. I had been visiting those under Hospice care periodically; to allow the chief caregiver to catch up with friends, or run errands; thus affording them a break from their responsibility.

Halfway through this ordeal…for want of a better word…a proverbial light went off in my head. I jogged my memory and finished two books that I had began writing quite a while ago. They are now both published and available through Amazon and/ or Barnes and Noble.

"Babyless Boomers" is about infertile couples that achieve the role of Mommy and Daddy with an assist. A school nurse and a lawyer partner up to match the coloring and/ or ethnicity of the couple desiring to fill their empty nest. This eventually became problematic when the legality of this assist (to once again use sports terminology) was questioned.

The other novel, "Justice Served," involved a huge fire in which the mother of triplets, a heroine, died. She went back into the blazing building after ascertaining her children’s safety: thus making them orphans. Two of the adoptions were open with one being closed.

It became imperative to find the identity of the missing triplet when a murder was committed.

Most of us set limitations upon what we can and cannot do as we age. I always felt that age was not necessarily a precursor to avoiding activities.

Some have proverbial stop signs in their heads and self-limit what they can do after a certain period in their lives. I don’t necessarily mean activities that are out of the realm of safety.

What is the saying about an object at rest? Well, in my opinion, a mind at rest also snoozes. Ambition, as well as our adventures, become self-limiting. Travel is another thing that some folks limit due to age. I admit that I haven’t traveled for a while but the pandemic interfered with that aspect of my life in particular. After my husband’s death, I went to places that we didn’t get to do together…

Mt. Rushmore, Japan, China. I believe that travel is one of the best forms of education.
