It All Starts with a Little Idea

My journey in public service began in 2014 when a surfing organization came to Ocean County from California for a day of surfing with children with autism. The event filled up almost instantly and something sparked within me that day.

“Autism tends to bring a lot of serious issues to consider,” I said when I accepted my award. “Heart of Surfing offers an opportunity to try something fun, and experience the ocean in a supportive and positive atmosphere.”

One idea followed by heart-led work, a relentless drive, and a commitment to my passion is what led me to that stage this week. I assume that’s how every female award recipient felt.

One idea, one decision, one step in each of our respective lives brought us together as recognized leaders in the community. In every issue of Shore Lo-

cal, we highlight incredible community members who are making a difference, like Heartland Hero recipient Cheryl Caliri and her daughter Hilary Van Horn of Mays Landing (Founders of Earth Angels for Dementia on page 52) and Pasquale Cassesse (a Navy lieutenant in the Black Sea near Ukraine - page 55).

Whatever your little idea might be, go after it. Take the first steps. Make one decision followed by another. Your dreams are waiting for you to breathe life into them. You never know how much power resides within you to inspire change and bring out the good in a community. The real prize comes in the form of human connections and the smiles on the faces of the participants. The heroes are the volunteers that make it all possible.

April is Autism Awareness month.

Look for opportunities to support those living with autism in our community. A kind smile, a gentle understanding, and thoughtful words are all beautiful ways to show that you care.

Year round daylight saving time: Be careful what you wish for Weather

I

magine a world where the sun never set before 5pm, even in the dead of winter. No more early sunsets and driving home from work in darkness. In this world, there's no more "spring ahead" and "fall back" with the clocks, so no more adjusting to gaining or losing an hour of sleep.

Sounds great, doesn't it? It's been a dream for some for a long time. And earlier this month, it got one step closer to becoming reality.

The United States Senate recently passed the Sunshine Protection Act, a bill that would make daylight saving time permanent throughout the United States. Interestingly, it passed with unanimous consent.

Who would have thought that during these highly partisan and deeply divided times that anything could ever pass unanimously in either house of Congress. Yet while all 100 senators agree that this plan is best for our country, some meteorologists, including this one, do not.

Despite the Senate's approval, the bill still has to pass the U.S. House and get signed into law by the President, so there are several steps remaining and there's no guarantee that the Sunshine Protection Act will become the law of the land.

And even if it does, it won't take effect until November of 2023, which means at minimum, we'll have at least one more year of springing forward in early March and falling back in early November.

The changing of the clocks has been an annual tradition now for the last five decades, since 1974. Interestingly enough, that is the year that the United States last experimented with

year-round daylight saving time. Congress called it something different back then, the Emergency Daylight Savings Time Energy Conservation Act. And as its name suggests, its main intent was to conserve energy during the energy crisis that dominated the 1970s. But even then, people were also excited about the later sunsets, and not having the biannual duty of changing their clocks. Yet less than a year after this act was implemented as law in early January of 1974, it was promptly repealed, due especially to unpopularity but also failing to result in any appreciable energy conservation.

So if at first it doesn't succeed, try try again. Or at least that's what many politicians, and probably many of you, are thinking. But I think if this reincarnated idea gets a second chance, history may repeat itself and it may be doomed for repeal again in the future. Why? Because to reap the benefits of the later sunsets, the cost is later sunrises, or as the old saying goes, it's like robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Yes, those two months here in South Jersey when the sun sets before 5pm, specifically from November 7th through January 16th, can be a little depressing. The early darkness is a bummer, especially for those stuck in work and school all day only to come home and it's already night. If we switch to year round daylight saving time, the earliest sunset in South Jersey would be just after 5:30pm in early December. Of course, given the colder weather in late fall and early winter, can we really capitalize on that "extra" hour of early evening daylight that time of year? Certainly, the opportunities are fewer than

when we get the extra hour in the spring and summer.

But remember the byproduct of the later sunsets in the winter are much later sunrises. For instance here in South Jersey, the two month stretch from December 3rd through February 5th would see the daily sunrise after 8am. That means waiting for the bus, riding to work, and even the first hour of some of our school and work days spent in darkness. On an especially cloudy or rainy day, that darkness will linger as late as 8:30am. That means, among many other issues, most kids waiting for the bus in total darkness from just after Thanksgiving to just before Valentine's Day each winter.

Of course, there are pros and cons to both sides. And whatever our lawmakers decide, hopefully the process will be a thoughtful and productive one that weighs the benefits and disadvantages of both. While I'm personally inclined to keep the process the way it is, public opinion is currently on the side of year round daylight saving time. There's actually a third, less discussed option as well, year round eastern standard time, which some biologists argue is best and healthiest for our bodies natural rhythm. But given the popularity of the late summer sunsets each year, that third option has gained very little support, both from the public and in Washington. Only time will tell the fate of our time (zone). And while I'm officially forecasting America to take another stab at year round daylight saving time, I'm also forecasting buyer's remorse a few years down the road, and an eventual return to what we've used for the last 50+ years. I'll be sure to save this column to see if my time zone prognostications hold any water and if my predictions age well.

The American Cornhole League (ACL) brought its Pro Cornhole Mania to Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City. The full weekend of competition was highlighted by a tournament airing on national TV. The American Cornhole League is dedicated to promoting and developing the sport for fans of all ages. The league was founded in 2015 as a grassroots movement, touring the country, hosting professional, collegiate and amateur tournaments. New Ocean City Boat Club Offers Rentals and Carefree Recreation

T

here’s a new boat club in town, and you don’t even need a boat to join. That’s right, international brand Carefree Boat Club is expanding to Ocean City.

Sean McNulty, membership director (and co-owner with Adam Fox) of the South Jersey franchise, which includes a club in Avalon. The Ocean City branch will offer six boats and a couple jetskis. The fleet will offer yachts, pontoons, inflatables, and even a twin-engine center console vessel, perfect for offshore fishing.

Each boat will allow for towing, in case you were interested in water-skiing or tubing. “Unlike other Carefree Boat Clubs, we will have more boats

available for guests, at a ratio of eight boats per member instead of ten to one,” said McNulty.

The boat club will be located at All-Seasons Marina on the base of the 34th street bridge. The club will officially open May 15 and remain open until Thanksgiving. On May 8th, McNulty will host an open house for potential members.

The open house will include a tour of the marina and refreshments for guests. The Ocean City branch will cap membership at 50 members so that everyone will have fair opportunities to reserve each boat.

Members will be able to enjoy fishing or a lazy day on the bay without the demands of being a boat owner, like insurance, dock fees, fuel, cleaning or maintenance. Yet, members can enjoy the perks of boat

life, including unlimited use and wide selection of vessels, assistance for club staff, boating education, and the ability to reserve a boat or rent one in the “spur of the moment.” “ We wanna give members the feel of a yacht or country club,” said McNulty. “We offer white glove service and make members feel luxurious or powerful.”

Due to inflation, supply-chain interruptions and rising fuel prices,

water lovers are unable to purchase boats in the same way they could a few years ago. Carefree Boat Club understands that problem and hopes to offer a solution.

New members will be asked to make a one-time payment and then pay a monthly fee.

McNulty remembers with a smile his summers growing up in Avalon, where his family would spend sunny days on the water. After working in business development and sales, he moved to South Jersey full-time to run the boat club, and says that he finds joy in applying his business expertise to recreation in a beautiful area.

“I have lived in Australia, Europe and Thailand,” said McNulty. “You may take your home for granted, but don’t forget that we live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. People love South Jersey because of the beaches, and I am excited to show them another wondrous side: the waters.”

Night in Venice Theme Announced

Night in Venice to Celebrate 67th Anniversary on July 23

ight in Venice will return to Ocean City for the 67th time at 6 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2022. Registration is now open to all boat and bayfront home owners who want to participate in this year’s celebration.

The optional theme will be “Mummers: Struttin’ on the Bay,” a tribute to the colorful costumes, themed entries and distinctive string bands that define Philadelphia’s annual New Year’s Day parade and Ocean City’s Tuesday nights on the Boardwalk. Once again, a fireworks display will light up the bay and cap off the festivities on July 23.

The boat parade and decorated bayfront home contest provide a chance to be part of the highlight of the summer season in Ocean City. Thousands of spectators line the bayfront, and thousands

more attend private parties at homes along the route from the Ocean City-Longport Bridge to Tennessee Avenue.

Plans are still taking shape for this year’s event, but one special guest will be Jackie Evancho, who will be performing with the Ocean City Pops in a special concert 7:30 p.m.

A salute to Ocean City’s women lifeguards

omen’s History Month is a good time to review the history of South Jersey’s female ocean lifeguards.

During the first three-quarters of the 20th century, with few exceptions, the position of ocean lifeguard was a male only job. In 1975, the Atlantic City Beach Patrol hired its first female lifeguard, Virginia Gaye Kelly, and the following summer the Ocean City Beach Patrol hired their first female lifeguard, Judy Lichtner.

Since then female lifeguards have played an increasingly important role in bather protection in South Jersey.

During the summer of 1922, Ocean City came within an hour of becoming the first ocean resort in the country to hire female lifeguards. On July 11, 1922, all the members of the Ocean

City Beach Patrol went on strike because of the low pay. The next day the Philadelphia Bulletin grabbed readers’ attention with this headline: “Ocean City Beach Guards on Strike; May Employ Women.”

Ocean City’s mayor, Joseph G. Champion, threatened to hire women lifeguards if the men did not return to the beach. The women, all members of the Ambassador Swimming Club

in Atlantic City, said, “In the interests of humanity, they’d gladly serve as guards in Ocean City.”

No females were hired because Mayor Champion agreed to raise the lifeguards’ pay from $60 a month to $100.

Wildwood became the first municipality in the country to hire female ocean lifeguards. In 1933, the Wildwood Beach Patrol hired Florence

Newton and Mae Ottey to watch over their bathers.

Ocean City Mayor Harry Headley and OCBP Captain Jack G. Jernee disagreed with Wildwood’s decision to employ female lifeguards.

Headley said, “Our visitors want safety, not fades. With men's lifeguards they know they are getting the best protection possible.” Jernee told reporters, “No woman can take the punishment handed out by a struggling, husky man when he is drowning. I’ll stack my guards up against any woman or women in the world. Given all-around tests such as are required at any seashore, and my patrol will win out.”

Times have changed since the 1930s. Females now play an important role in bather protection on the beaches of South Jersey.

Friendships, both old and new

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

E

vents of late have launched me into the question, “what is the meaning of friendship.” I never really considered the concept of true friendship until just a few years ago when I lost my best friend Paul to cancer. Paul and I had been friends since third grade and through the gaps that life throws at us, work, marriage, divorce, children and deaths, our friendship endured. We spoke every few days which carried us over until we would get together a few times a year. His passing left a void that would not ever be filled and I have come to terms with that.

My wife has said that I should cultivate new friendships but at this stage in my life, I don’t believe I have what it will take. The gestation period for elephants is almost two years. No matter how much you coax or cajole, it will stay almost two years. True rich and meaningful friendships also take time, a long time. I have made close friends at work. Together, we laughed, cried, partied, and shared. But time, separation and world issues have taken their toll.

Developing a friendship is like a dance of sorts. To elevate an acquaintance to a friendship, there must be a mutual exchange of close, personal issues and those issues should be received without judgement and in a positive manner. It is also important to support your friend in their endeavors as well as their challenges.

There is one individual with whom I have been friends since college. We talk on the phone every couple weeks, and most con-

versations last over an hour but little is asked about my life; my highs and lows, my wife and kids. I often find myself questioning the benefit of this friendship. A certain give and take is healthy in a friendship and I daresay, a necessity. As far as reciprocity is concerned, this friendship appears rather one sided but with over forty years of history between us, what to do? He values the time we talk. He has reached out to me during health and family concerns, so I have resolved myself to the role I have in our friendship.

Certainly, the pandemic, vaccine issue and politics have played a significant role in some former friendships where their sensitivities to those issues caused a breach in loyalties and shed light on how fragile the foundation of those friendships really were. Paul set a high bar for friendship; one that anyone would be hard pressed to meet, yet I have hope.

During our stay in Florida, with the help of a deep Facebook search, I located a former coworker and surfing buddy with whom I worked with over forty years ago. The crazy thing is that he and his wife live within a few miles of where we were staying. My wife and I went over to visit him and his wife and spent hours reminiscing and catching up. The following week, we met for lunch at a nice waterfront restaurant and the following week had them over to our place where we shared a meal and good conversation. We talked about our children, retirement, health and his job since he is still employed and facing the challenges of working alongside a younger work force. Perhaps this is the rekindling of an old friendship.

It’s believed gnocchi originated in Northern Italy. The name came from the word “nocca,” which means knuckles, or the Lombard word “knohha,” which means knot – like a knot in wood. Gnocchi have been a traditional type of Italian

pasta since Roman times and were originally made from semolina flour mixed with eggs. In the early 1500s, gnocchi were made with bread, milk and ground almonds (called “zanzarelli”). Later on, a mixture of eggs, flour and water were added to the “zanzarelli,” and the dough was pushed through a cheese grater and called “malfatti” (which means badly made).

Potato gnocchi date back to the 16th century when potatoes were introduced to Italy. But depending on the region, gn-

occhi are still made with a variety of base ingredients, including pumpkin, semolina, chestnut flour and cornmeal.

Not only does each region have its own gnocchi recipe, they each have their own specific sauce. In my home region of Valle D’Aosta, we make Gnocchi Bava, gnocchi in a butter sage cream sauce, Fontina cheese and broccoli. (It’s been on my menu at Mama Mia’s since I opened 35 years ago.) In Verona, they prefer a fresh tomato sauce, and in Sorrento, they love their gnocchi “alla sorrentina” – potato

gnocchi baked with tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil.

In spring and summer, it’s wonderful to eat gnocchi with a basil pesto, which gives gnocchi a fresh taste without having to cook a sauce. Just toss cooked gnocchi with pesto sauce to taste, top with freshly grated Parmesan, and voilà – dinner is served!

I’ve included my gnocchi recipe here; feel free to toss it with your favorite pesto.

Chef Joe Massaglia’s Original Recipe for Mama Mia’s Potato Gnocchi ● ● ● ● ● ●

4 large russet (not Yukon Gold) potatoes, unpeeled 2 tablespoons butter ¼ teaspoon nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste 2 large eggs and 1 egg yolk 1 to 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Line a baking sheet with parchment or waxed paper and dust with flour; set aside.

Pierce potatoes in several places with a fork; microwave on high for 8 to 10 minutes or until soft. (You also can bake at 375° until tender.) Cool slightly; carefully remove skins while potatoes are still hot.

Immediately put the potatoes through a ricer into a large bowl. Mix in the butter, nutmeg, salt and pepper until combined; add the eggs and egg yolk and combine with a spatula. Mix in 1 ¼ cups flour until a soft, not sticky, dough is formed. (You may need to add more flour, a tablespoon at a time, until you get the proper consistency.)

Put dough on a floured surface and gently roll into a circle ¾ inch thick. Important: Before making all the gnocchi, cut two or three ½ inch pieces from the circle, shape per the following directions and test in boiling water to make sure they don’t fall apart. If they do, you will need to add more flour to the dough before cutting.

Cut dough into 1-inch ropes, then cut each rope into ½ inch pieces. Shape gnocchi by pressing onto the tines of a floured fork or gnocchi paddle. Using light to medium pressure, roll the gnocchi on the fork or paddle to create a ridged surface. Place rolled gnocchi on a prepared baking sheet.

Bring 4 quarts of salted water to a boil in a large pot. Using a slotted spoon or spider, add half the gnocchi to the water; return to a boil and cook, gently stirring occasionally, until they float to the surface.

Continue cooking for 1 to 2 minutes, until done. Repeat with remaining gnocchi.

If using immediately, add cooked gnocchi to your prepared sauce and serve with additional grated Parmesan cheese.

Note: Cooked gnocchi pieces can be cooled completely on a lightly oiled parchment-covered baking sheet, covered with plastic wrap and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Gently reheat in a prepared sauce. ● Uncooked gnocchi pieces can be frozen on the prepared baking sheet, then transferred to a resealable plastic bag and frozen for up to 1 month.

It’s best to thaw them about an hour before cooking in boiling water so they don’t become gummy. ●

pring has sprung, which means Summer 2022 is right over the horizon. As the weather heats up and the school year slowly comes to an end, it’s time to begin thinking about summertime plans. While we would all love to spend countless hours sprawled across a beach towel, basking in the sun, that’s not a reality for most families. The show must go on, jobs continue to demand our attention, and the kids need mental and physical stimulation.

Camp is a wonderful way for kids to laugh, learn, and play their way through the dog days of summer.

Summer camp options have vastly expanded over the last decade, with camps of all shapes, sizes, and themes for every child. Choosing the right

camp for your kids can be one more overwhelming decision to make this year.

Use these tips to decide on a camp that works for you and your children this summer.

Choose a Genre Summer camps come in a dozen different styles, themes, and varieties these days. Choosing the right camp for your child should be based on what you want your child to get from the experience.

Traditional summer camps offer a fun opportunity for kids to learn about the great outdoors. From archery and campfires to swimming and hiking, traditional summer camps teach children skills that will serve them for years to come.

Academic camps are an excellent option for children who are less comfortable with the outdoors. They have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge about topics that interest them. These camps usually touch on topics not otherwise taught in schools in a hands-on and exciting way.

Extracurricular camps such as gymnastics, karate, and music camp, offer children an opportunity to further their

coaching/training in their particular area of interest. These camps are usually shorter in length than a traditional summer camp, so it may be necessary to line up several themed experiences throughout the summer. If your child already plays a sport or attends an activity, check with that facility to see if they have a summer camp option.

Narrow Down The Logistics Once you’ve decided on what type of camp your children will attend, it’s time to narrow down your search. Decide how far you’re willing to travel for drop-off and pick-up situations, what hours of operation are conducive to your schedule, how much you’re willing to spend, and if you will need to call in the grandparent reinforcements.

Begin a search, whether on Google or in community Facebook groups, for camps that fit your specific prerequisites. Online community groups are a great opportunity to receive genuine, honest reviews about a particular camp.

Send the Spidey Senses Moms just know things. Our intuition has served us well for generations. Use that motherly instinct to begin feeling out camps. As a mother,

it can be scary to think about sending your baby (no matter how old) away to camp for the first time. This is a decision that you and your child both need to feel comfortable with. Once you’ve narrowed down a few options, give the camps a call. Ask as many questions as you need to make you feel comfortable. This can include questions about safety, security, discipline, and so on.

If you feel the need to take it one step further, ask to visit the camp prior to enrollment if possible.

Stacey’s Surf Camp focuses on empowering each participant with the proper skills, ocean knowledge, safety awareness and self confidence in a supportive, friendly environment.

The camp, located on Pembroke Avenue beach in Margate, is structured for kids to learn at their own pace. For the younger kids (ages 6 &7) Stacey offers a 2-hour, 3 day a week program which introduces surfing in a positive, playful and safe atmosphere. The instructors are extremely attentive to any fears and hesitations they may have. The kids play games, make friends and feel very secure before entering the water.

The beginner/Intermediate camp covers ocean safety, nutrition, conditioning, popping up, balance, reading waves, tides and wind, surf etiquette and so much more

Some kids love Surf Camp so much they end up signing up for a week and then end up staying all summer!

The advanced camp is for kids who are ready to take their surfing to the next level. They have their own equipment, can paddle out, catch waves on their own, and want to be challenged.

Coached by pro-surfer Cassidy McClain and Rocco Mahoney on a daily basis, participants improve their skills and take their surfing to the next level.

In addition to healthy exercise and being outdoors, kids make new friends, learn ocean safety and enjoy a new sport.

Private, semiprivate and group lessons are also available by appointment. “ Sur f ing ha s taught me how to overcome my fears and has given me a deeper level of appreciation for the ocean and all its power," shared owner, Stacey Alper. "It offers me great physical challenges and provides a spiritual happiness that I hadn’t en-

countered before. The lessons I learn in the water better prepare me to accept and embrace life’s waves.”

Since Stacey herself learned to surf as an adult, she prides herself on sharing this experience with other adults. As a women owned business, she is extremely passionate about the Wednesday Women’s surf night.

Nearly every Wednesday night of the summer (times vary due to tides & conditions) you will find Stacey and her instructors on Pembroke Ave. beach empowering a group of beginners to advanced women to push through boundaries. Together they wipe out and catch waves

while laughing and hooting and hollering with pure joy in the ocean. It is always a good time and a magical bonding experience between like minded women. Some of the women have said “I look forward to Wednesday night more than a Saturday night”, “So awesome to see women supporting women”, “Can’t wait for next week” , “Sign me up every Wednesday.”

Some of the ladies loved Women’s Surf night so much that they wanted to share this experience with the males in their lives. In response, Stacey introduced Awesome Adult night and this time the men were invited. Every Tuesday night (times vary due to tides & conditions) you can find men and women catching waves, learning something new and having some laughs.

We all remember the good old days as children when summers were for friends, marshmallows and petting zoos. As parents today, we have the opportunity to shape our children’s lives by choosing a quality summer camp. So, what camps should you consider? Here are 10 camps in South Jersey that are perfect for your child: Egg Harbor Township PAL Summer Camp This camp includes laser tag, waterslides, volleyball, arts and crafts, bounce houses and plenty of athletic games. The camp starts June 30th and runs between 7:30 am and 5:30pm, certain to tire out your little zoomer. The camp accepts children between the ages of 5 and 16. If traditional summer camp seems a little too broad, check out

Gymnastics Center Spring and Summer Camp for Kids

ooking for a fun camp to send your child this summer? Check out Everest Gymnastics summer and vacation camp.

Summer camp is focused on little gymnasts and tumblers, providing skilled instruction in a kid-friendly environment. Even if your child has no gym experience, they will be inspired to become the next Simone Biles or American Ninja Warrior. The camp includes gym elements, such as the trampoline, balance beam, bars and diving into the sponge pit. Your child could learn forward rolls, simple tumbling skills and floor routines. You’ll be amazed at their tricks when they come home!

The summer camp also offers plenty of recreational activities.

Campers will enjoy arts and crafts, water games, basketball, volleyball, four square, kickball, and STEAM activities. Optional pool time is avail-

able at the Galloway Swim Club on Wednesdays and Fridays. The camp runs between June 20th and September 2nd from 9am to 4pm (half days in the morning and afternoon are also available). Campers must be between the ages of four to fourteen.

Like summer camp, vacation camp includes tumbling and gym skills along with fun games.

The only difference is that vacation camp takes place during spring break! If your child is begging to jump on the trampoline, signing up is easy and reasonably-priced.

The camp takes place on April 18th and runs to the 22nd from 9am to 4pm. This camp is only located at Galloway gym. Before and aftercare is available as well.

The mission of Everest Gymnastics and Tumbling Centers is to develop healthy, happy and confident athletes through the love of sports.

They strive to motivate each individual with energetic and positive coaching to become their personal best.

In regards to gymnastics, the gym offers classes for tiny tots(aged 2-3), preschoolers, beginner athletes, intermediate athletes, and advanced athletes (for both boys and girls). for kids with special needs to help with sensory issues, coordination, and strength. Everest Gymnastics also hosts birthday parties with themes like superheroes and princesses.

After working in gyms and coaching gymnastics for over 20 years, Matthew and Jennifer Shriver opened Everest Gymnastics and Tumbling Centers in 2016. The couple are passionate about providing family-oriented training and people-first attitudes. “We care for the person first, then the athlete,” said Matthew.

Camp Blue Star Celebrates 21 Years

C

amp Blue Star was envisioned to be a place where children can learn and play.

Where children learn about rockets not by reading about them, but by building them. Where children don’t sit and play games on a screen, but where they run, and jump, and throw and splash. A place that nudges children out of their comfort zone and offers them a chance to grow.

Camp Blue Star provides safe opportunities for children to grow, and to overcome any fears they may have. Maybe it’s their first time in a pool without their parents, or the first time they played a new game, or the first time they were on stage.

Whatever the activity, we encourage our campers to rise to the challenge and to be bold.

Camp Blue Star is housed in the Hess Educational Complex, 700 Babcock Road, Mays Landing, NJ. The school provides us with air-conditioned indoor spaces such as classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and

a state of the art performing arts center, not to mention an indoor Olympic sized pool.

The outdoor area offer large open fields, playground equipment, basketball courts, and a manicured courtyard where we enjoy BBQ Fridays that seem to always end in a dance party.

After living through a pandemic, a time when children and adults were scared of something we could not see, we all are looking for some normalcy for our children and ourselves.

"All the counselors are certified teachers," shared Cliff Melder, Director of Community Education. "We strive to make camp fun and not feel like school, while still encouraging the children to use their brain."

Since I last wrote, so much has occurred. March Madness continues, and St. Peter's has become a "Sweet 16 Cinderella". Up next, a Sweet 16 matchup with Purdue, and that game is set for the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, so if you're going to those games, and looking for a team to root for, might I suggest the Jersey school?

Moving on to pro basketball now, as I looked back and saw that the Sixers were just about to have their reunion with Ben Simmons. Well, by now, we all know THAT didn't go well! Sixers fans turned out in droves to BOO their former player, who didn't even dress for the game, by the way. After a 129-100 blowout win by the Nets, those same Sixers fans left booing their own team!

That was probably the first sign of trouble with the Sixers. The next came when Denver came to town and a guy named Bones Hyland managed to upstage the MVP matchup of Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic. Embiid finished with 34 points in a battle between the two MVP frontrunners, Jokic had 22 points and 13 rebounds, but it was the four decisive three-pointers that Hyland made down the stretch that led the Nuggets to a 114-110 win.

The Sixers bounced back with impressive wins at Cleveland and home against Dallas. The 111-101 win over the Mavericks might have been their best win of the season. Unfortunately, they followed that up blowing a 16-point lead at home to the Toronto Raptors. And to me, that's where the

trouble really begins. Late in that game, the Sixers ran a bunch of isolation plays for James Harden. Time and time again, he failed to deliver and the Sixers lost 93-88.

As I write this, the Sixers are coming off a 113-106 win at home over the Miami Heat. A win that they accomplished WITHOUT Embiid or Harden.

Tyrese Maxey with 13 of his gamehigh 28 points in the 4th quarter, as the Sixers pull to within 2.5 games of the Heat for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

With 11 games to go, the Sixers project to be anywhere from the #1 seed in the East to the #4 seed in the East. It will be interesting to see where they end up down the stretch, but as long as they remain a top-four seed, they will have home court advantage for the first couple of rounds of the playoffs.

To hockey now, as I have to give my 97.3 ESPN radio colleague Kevin Durso credit. He was the first one I heard float the idea that the Flyers would keep Claude Giroux around long enough for him to hit 1,000 games with the Orange & Black.

Then, they would try to move him.

Well, that's exactly what happened.

In a thrilling 5-4 win over Nashville, Giroux was honored pregame and then the Flyers actually WON a game at home as Kevin Hayes scored the tying goal and Joel Farabee scored the game winner. Giroux didn't play in a penalty-kill situation late in the game. He also didn't make the road trip to Ottawa and then was traded on Saturday March 19th.

Here are the particulars of the trade.

the Eagles took Derek Barnett. Now, Reddick comes back as one of the more dangerous pass rushers off the edge as he has 23.5 sacks in the past two seasons. His initial tweet simply read, "I'M COMING HOME! The "flip side" of the Reddick signing is that the Eagles then released Pro-Bowler Fletcher Cox. But that didn't last long as he was only a free agent for about a day and a half before the team signed him back.

Apparently this was all about money as Cox was owed $18 million, and by cutting him and re-signing him at $14 million, the Eagles apparently saved about $2 million in cap space. It's still kind of a strange move because in the grand scheme of things, that isn't very much.

free agent wide receiver Zach Pascal from the Colts. This makes a lot of sense as Nick Sirianni was his offensive coordinator in Indianapolis.

Pascal figures to take Jalen Reagor's spot as the third wideout in a rotation of DeVonta Smith and Quez Watkins. Pascal is also reportedly a willing and able blocker on screens and in the running game. Count me as someone hopeful that this move works out.

In local basketball, the Stockton Ospreys ran into a brick wall known as Christopher Newport in the Sweet 16 of the D-3 tournament. Major props to Head Coach Scott Bittner and the rest of his players and staff.

It truly was an outstanding season for the Ospreys in Galloway.

Maryland. Billy Wheatley is a 5-11 junior and Absegami High School alum who is off to a hot start as the Green Terror come off their Myrtle Beach trip. Through 19 games, Wheatley is hitting .282 with 21 RBI and 16 runs scored. Wheatley and McDaniel College are off to a 13-6 start to the season, as they're actually home against Stockton this weekend (3-25 & 3-26).

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment, starting with the sad news that actor William Hurt passed away on March 13th. He was an Oscar winner for "Kiss of the Spider Woman", and outstanding in memorable roles in "The Big Chill" and "Broadcast News" as well. Given my career, that was my favorite role, however he was pretty good in 1981's "Body Heat" as well.

Which leads me to my final item, and that's about the Netflix show "The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window". My radio colleague Mike Gill recommended this one, and it did not disappoint. The premise is, that a heartbroken woman named Anna (Kristen Bell) is unsure of whether or not she witnessed a murder. She mixes alcohol with medications prescribed by her therapist, has frequent hallucinations, and suffers from a crippling fear of the rain (ombrophobia). Anna is ostracized by members of her community, including her new neighbors, and labeled "crazy" by the police. Regardless of whether or not she saw a murder take place, Anna takes it upon herself to find the truth. The eight-episode series runs less than four hours total (each episode is 27 minutes), so if you're looking for something to binge watch, I highly recommend this!

Chef Michael Chiarlanza Ramps Up The Menu at Caroline's By The Bay

aroline’s by the Bay has a new chef in town and a new, highly-anticipated menu. The iconic bar and restaurant located on Bay Ave in Somers Point is home to an expansive bayside deck and open-air dining. The bar has been known for its relaxed and entertaining bar atmosphere for years. With weekly events including karaoke, live music, and open mics, Caroline’s has always been a local’s favorite.

Caroline’s patrons are thrilled about recent changes in kitchen management, which is now led by Executive Chef Michael Chiarlanza of Bobby Flay Steak.

year, brings decades of culinary experience to the table. From his 15 years at Bobby Flay to his time as the head chef at Atlantic Bahamas, Michael’s experiences are guaranteed to bring exceptional dining to Caroline’s.

A series of perfectly timed events led Chiarlanza and his wife Suzy to the Somers Point bayside tavern. “Caroline’s was in need of a chef. My wife and I were customers so we knew the business and its potential. The timing was just right,” shares Chiarlanza about his decision to lease the kitchen at Caroline’s.

Last year, Chef Michael came on board mid-summer and quickly adjusted to the staff, systems, and busyness of the season. This year, he is looking forward to the coming months, as he has had time to prepare the menu and a full summer season at the Jersey Shore.

“We look forward to adding more seafood entrees, as we are right on the bay,” shares Chef Michael.

Ingredients: ● 2 tsp olive oil ● 1 lb. sea scallops patted dry ● Pinch of salt ● Fresh ground pepper ● 1/3 cup minced shallots ● 1/2 dry white wine ● 10 oz. Bag of fresh baby spinach ● 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice Directions: Heat oil on medium-high heat in a large heavy skillet. Add scallops and cook undisturbed for 2 minutes per side. National developmental disabilities awareness month - Meet LaToya Smith

arch is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. The annual campaign began in 1987 when President Reagan recognized the month of March as a time to increase public awareness about Americans living with disabilities. The campaign is intended to shine light on the barriers that those with disabilities face as well as their ability to live fulfilling, productive lives. The National Association of Councils on Developmental Disabilities (NACDD), along with Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and National Disability Rights Network (NDRN), come together each March to create a campaign that honors, celebrates, and educates Americans living with disabilites and

their communities.

The Arc of Atlantic County has been serving South Jersey residents with disabilities since 1961. Founded by solution-oriented parents and community members who wanted more accessibility for disabled individuals, the Arc continues to support the Atlantic County disabled community through employment, housing, and recreational resources. The Arc of Atlantic County aims to “promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and actively supports their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.”

Academy of Culinary Arts Celebrates 40 Years

F

rom globe-trotting pastry chefs to locally-renowned restaurateurs and everything in between, the Academy of Culinary Arts has been helping to mold, educate and elevate highly skilled culinary and hospitality professionals for four decades.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College.

“The Academy of Culinary Arts has been an important part of educating and preparing the culinary workforce in southern New Jersey and will continue to be as we adapt to the changing needs of the hospitality and tourism industry,” said Chef Tim O’Donnell, Director of the Academy of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management. “We are bringing on new programming like mobile food service with our new Food Truck, and look forward to the future of the Academy and the successes of our students.”

Since the Academy first opened, 3,441 students have graduated with a degree in culinary arts, many of whom have gone on to successful careers locally, nationally and internationally.

graduate of the Academy of Culinary Arts, said the Academy changed his life.

After two decades working his way to be the executive sous chef of Showboat Casino and Hotel, Sheridan interviewed for a teaching position at his alma mater.

Now, he is in his 15th year as a chef educator here where he leads the instruction at Careme’s, the Academy’s student-run restaurant.

“I love being here. I love working with the students every day,” said Sheridan, 62. “What I really get joy out of now is following the success of former students through social media.”

While there are so many notable graduates from the Academy of Culinary Arts like Chef Douglass Williams, named Food & Wine “Best New Chefs in America” class of 2020 and a 2020 James Beard Award, or two-time “Hell’s Kitchen” contestant Amanda Palomino, there are many who graduate and go one to successful careers as chefs, cooks or entrepreneurs in the region.

Sheridan pointed to Robert Abramek of Harrah’s Atlantic City, a banquet cook at the Waterfront Conference Center, who he described as a “consummate professional.” Sheridan said that Abramek has been in the industry for decades, and enjoys his work and his role in the kitchen.

“He is a shining example of what we do here,” Sheridan said. “In this area, I would venture to say that you can walk into almost any kitchen in Atlantic County and find an Academy of Culinary Arts grad.”

Pleasantville May Find Gold in Trash there could possiblly be a void soon if ACUA were to close the nearby trash landfill. His former Press property is adjacent to the rail line which will offer a Green alternative for transporting C & D (construction debris) out of the county. The city seemed to welcome the new 8000 square feet business.

Although there was some opposition from other sources due to the impact the facility may have with traffic and other various reasons.

The city liked the much-needed revenue that is anticipated to come through the host fees of $4/ per ton which is projected to be approximately $400,000 per year. In addition, there will be well paying jobs with an emphasis to hire local. Pleasantville will also gain additional substantial tax revenues.

In Somers Point: With the addition of Chipotle and Taco Bell along New Road, complemented by the 101,000 square feet Target at the Somers Point Plaza, Somers Point is primed for a 2022 resurgence.

ocal entrepreneur James DiNatale has built quite a reputation repositioning older vacant buildings into productive business opportunity and employment centers. Not too long ago, he converted the abandoned Lenox China Plant 450,000 into a thriving manufacturing plant for long term tenant Barrett Fencing Company. It created approximately 400 jobs and major tax revenue for the County.

DiNatale also recently acquired the former Atlantic City Press printing building which has been converted into cultivation facilities for NJ licensed marijuana companies. It is expected that the business will create substantial revenue for the host City of Pleasantville by the way of host fees and additional jobs.

The Benefits of Preplanning Your Funeral, part 3

s I continue this series on preplanning funerals, keep in mind that each step you take makes life easier for your loved ones.

So now you have had your discussion with your family and/or loved ones and you are all on the same page with what you want and what your family needs.

What is the next step in the process?

The next step is to make an appointment with the funeral home and sit down with one of their funeral directors who have experience in making pre-arranged funerals. Now, it is important to know if the funeral home you are planning to deal with does prearranged funerals (which most do), and do they guarantee their funeral services and merchandise when prepayment is done. This is the big

difference between the terms Plan-NoPay and Plan-Payed prearrangements which is really worth discussing because that is one of your choices as a consumer.

In the funeral world there is what is called Plan-No-Pay prearrangements and Plan-Pay Prearrangements. In a Plan-No-Pay Prearrangement the client either makes the arrangements for him/her self or for another person who maybe a family member or a dear friend or acquaintance. This would involve creating a written record with the funeral home of the individual’s vital statistical information which is used to fill out the death certificate at the time of death.

This information is also used to fill out the necessary forms for social security, Medicare, Medicaid and veteran’s forms.

The vital statistical information consists of obviously the name, date of birth, city and state of birth, social security number, spouses name, parents names(including mother’s maiden name) educational level and occupation. At the same time the funeral director will (or should) make a record of personal biographical information which can be used to write an obituary for placement in the newspaper(s) and online. Atlantic City’s Most-Loved Micro Distillery Celebrates 5 Years

M

icro distilleries have become incredibly popular in recent years. Like microbrewing, micro distilling is the art of producing smallbatch, beverage-grade spirit alcohol.

It is an art that has been practiced in Europe for several years, which has gained traction in the United States in recent decades. The micro distilling movement was born out of the craft beer movement of the United Kingdom, and since the 1970s, there has been a surge in the small batch distillery of different spirits, with bourbon arguably being the most popular.

One of Atlantic City’s most notable small-batch distilleries is Little Water Distillery (807 Baltic Avenue,

Unit B, Atlantic City, 08401).

The distillery was founded by brothers, Mark and Eric Ganter, and produces small batch spirits.

Although their first official spirit, Whitecap Whiskey, was released in December of 2016, the doors to their official premises did not open until March 2017, which was also when their most popular spirit, Liberty Rum, was released. That means this year marks their fifth anniversary, and they are throwing a huge party to celebrate on March 26th and 27th.

The event kicks off on the 26th at 1pm with a range of activities and entertainment. Although the state of New Jersey prohibits food to be sold by distilleries, there will be two food trucks on Saturday and one on Sunday.

Smokey’s World BBQ returns on Saturday to serve up some of your favorite BBQ’d meats and veggies to accompany a smooth glass of the Whitecap over ice. Get Pickled will also have a truck there and will be selling some of their delicious Korean Tacos comprising short rib, pork belly,

chicken, and more! On Sunday, the always-popular Traveling Tomato will be back at the LWD with their in-

credible wood fired pizza. For something a bit lighter, Mark will be cooking up some of his famous popcorn to snack on while you sip.

Their new spring menu will debut over the weekend, with several new cocktails and some classics being brought back. There has been a hot debate over on their Facebook page (@littlewaterdistillery) as to which cocktail from the past five years should be brought back for their spring menu, and ultimately the winner was “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Tequila”, their Liberty Rum based Margarita. There will also be a few surprises on the menu, including the release of two new and exclusive spirits in limited quantities on each day, so make sure you don’t miss out!

Local artist, David Kelly, will be performing a live acoustic set until 4pm. If you are still coherent by 6pm and your brain is still sharp, the LWD trivia will take place

at 6pm on Saturday, and you can even win prizes! The LWD celebrates their continuous success each year with a one-of-a-kind wooden token. The distillery offers tours and tastings for just $10 per person which includes a guided tasting of all of their spirits (Liberty Rum, Prosperity Rum, Rusted Revolver Gin, 48 Blocks Vodka, 48 Blocks Dark, Whitecap Whiskey, and Whitecap Old Fashioned) and an overview of their history and process. It only takes 30 minutes, and you don’t need a reservation, just show up at any of the tour times to get a spot (Friday: 5pm; Saturday: 1pm, 3pm, and 5pm; Sunday: 1pm and 3pm).

If you are planning an event or just a fun night out with friends, you can book a table to enjoy some of their expertly crafted cocktails, which use their own product of course. There are spaces available Friday (5-9pm), Saturday (1-8pm), and Sunday (16pm). Reservations are not necessary though, so you can just turn up and grab a cocktail or a bottle to go.

Spring has Sprung at BF Mazzeo

othing beats the beautiful bounties of spring! B.F. Mazzeo’s is stocked top to bottom with bright vibrant produce. Jenna Russo, the chef, and baker at B.F Mazzeo gather all her ingredients for the day from the fresh produce in the store. From the lunch grab-and-go meals to the mouth-watering fruit tarts, Russo plans her creations to fit everyone's diet and complement the seasonal fruits and vegetables. For spring, Russo is planning her new upcoming entrees and desserts to be light, comforting, and clean. “That’s what I love about spring,” says Russo. “It’s going to be delicious!” She described using more citrus flavors and adding springtime vegetables to everyone’s favorite chicken entrees.

Easter is coming and Russo has

planned to have all the traditional favorites ready to go! The braided Italian Easter bread makes for a great snack and centerpiece. The center of each bread, depending on the size you want, features beautifully colored eggs in the center! “People love dipping it in coffee or tea, and it’s very colorful,” says Russo. "Who doesn’t love a good decoration you can eat!"

The traditional meat pies will be available for Easter.

Jenna Russo recalls the meat pie’s Italian tradition as being part of the celebration of the end of lent! After giving up meat for so long, dig your fork into the savory meat pie. The meat pie is her grandmother’s recipe. “It’s a ricotta-based pie, but it’s savory. It has pepperoni, ham salami, a lot of black pepper, and parmesan cheese.

It is fantastic” The pie can be served chilled or warm, but Russo urges you to pull it right out of the fridge and onto the plate.

Local Veteran Facing Terminal Illness and Foreclosure Seeks Help

O

ne important facet of community news is sharing the stories of our neighbors, even when they are difficult to hear. Shining a light on these tragedies can help those in need, and we hope that these words will inspire you to take action.

This is Le’Roy Link’s story.

Link is a tried-and-true local from Egg Harbor Township who served in the military as a young adult. He has two children (now ages 21 and 17) and worked in home remodeling for most of his career. The 51-year-old knew that colon cancer ran in his family, but when he started having stomach pains, he didn’t think much of it. That was until he got a stage four colon cancer diagnosis in December 2021.

“We have tried to get benefits and help from Veteran Affairs and Social Security,” said Tanya Paye, a friend of Link. “Because of the pandemic, it hasn’t worked out.”

Link has had to undergo multiple

surgeries, radiation and rounds of chemotherapy, but those are simply to extend his life. His oncologist predicted that Link would live only for up to another twelve months. He hopes to see his son graduate from EHT High School and spend time with his mother, who has faced health problems of her own.

Unable to work, Link’s bills have been piling up. Paye reports that he has fallen behind on utility bills and his mortgage payments to the point where his family could lose their home. Link’s car was severely damaged after it was hit-and-run in the hospital parking lot and he hasn’t had the funds to repair it.

When asked what he wants readers to get from his story, Link said that he encourages people (even as young as 35) to get tested for colon cancer. March is colon cancer awareness month, so if colon cancer runs in your family, it’s more important than ever to schedule a colonoscopy.

“If I had gotten tested earlier, I could have caught the cancer and treated it, and maybe even extended my life,” he said.

Link and his family. The fundraiser has garnered over $8,000, which will help keep Link in his home and keep him comfortable in his final months. She has been working with EHT Vagabond Restaurant to book a beef-and-beer event with proceeds supporting Link, but no date has been finalized yet.

Cheryl Caliri of Mays Landing Receives New Jersey’s Heartland Hero Award

H

eartland Heroes are the epitome of love and compassion. Chery Caliri and her daughter, Hilary Van Horn, created one charity which flourished into several other charities to help individuals.

Earth Angels for Dementia was initially founded to provide much needed support to caregivers who care for loved ones with dementia. After mother and daughter duo, Cheryl Caliri and Hilary Van Horn, lost their beloved husband/father in 2018 to dementia, they began Earth Angels.

Cheryl now runs multiple charities to uplift and support her community.

As the world changed with the start of Covid, so too did Earth Angels for Dementia. Cheryl Caliri and Hilary Van Horn realized many of us were caring for loved ones with Covid and came to the realization that in times of need everyone is a caregiver! In turn, Cheryl and Earth Angels started caring for the community in various ways.

After seeing the incredible amounts of stress endured by first responders, Cheryl began a meal program for our healthcare heroes called “Gratitude to Go”. While many restaurants were closed and first responders themselves were fearful of contracting Covid, this program was a win-win for both our local restaurants and healthcare heroes.

First responders would be entitled to a free meal at these participating restaurants with the understanding they would buy additional meals for their families.

NJHeartland.org is extremely honored to thank Cheryl Caliri of Mays Landing, New Jersey, and name her as the Heartland Hero. Cheryl’s first organization, Earth Angels for Dementia, was created by Cheryl and her daughter, Hilary Van Horn, to provide much needed support to caregivers who care for loved ones with dementia after the loss of their husband/ father in 2018. Cheryl has also gone above and beyond by founding two programs for our first responders: the “Gratitude to Go” meal program and “Reboot Academy” to lower stress levels and boost immunity. Cheryl is also involved in other initiatives within our community.

During Easter time of 2020, Cheryl and her organization Earth Angels created 525 Easter baskets to give to children. In 2021, it was

more than 300 Easter baskets. As Easter is upon us soon again, Earth Angels will return to this project and has hopes to provide more than 300

Easter baskets in 2022. In the past, they have graciously received funding and sponsorships to support this effort from organizations such as the Rotary Club, the Mays Landing Merchants Association, Angelic Health, and many others.

Furthermore, Cheryl created www.rebootacademy.us, and a corresponding YouTube channel to assist first responders in lowering their stress levels for overall wellbeing as well as increased immunity. Cheryl created one for healthcare workers too called Compassion Fatigue.

The Earth Angels Center for Healing Arts is located at 115 NJ-50, Mays Landing, NJ. The center is home to grief support groups, caregiver support groups, as well as training for caregivers. Local Navy Hero Preserves Freedom for Ukraine

gg Harbor Township native Pasquale A. Cassesse has been deployed to the Black Sea as a part of efforts to reach peace between Russia and Ukraine. The beloved lieutenant remains in the thoughts and prayers of his mother Joan Lombard.

“Since he was a little kid, my son has always been the first to help others in need,” said Lombard. “When the captain told me that my son was an asset to the ship, I was so proud.”

Cassesse attended St. Augustine Prep School where he graduated at the top of his class, then went away to college at Norwich University in Vermont. He spent his time in ROTC and volunteered by playing basketball with children with disabilities. Cassesse joined the Navy and has been deployed four times, working primarily in England and other European countries.

Today, Cassesse is working on the Sullivan Brothers Destroyer Ship in the Black Sea near Norway. His moth-

er worries about his safety and the escalating conflict between Russia and Ukraine. She is also concerned that the soldiers lack the supplies they need, like toothpaste and gloves.

“I have been asking all my friends and family to donate, donate, donate,” said Lombard. "I make up the packages and have been sending out 25 per day,” she said.

Lombard organized a GoFundme for the cause, which has earned over one thousand dollars. St. Augustine Prep donated to support the troops in honor of Cassesse. Lombard shared she has been selling items in her home to fund packages filled with deodorant, hand warmers, oatmeal and sweet treats.

“To anyone in the military or who has a loved one serving there, thank you for your sacrifice,” said Lombard. “Our country and community stands with you and prays for you. God bless you.”

don’t know about you, but patience is not one of my strong qualities. If the truth be told, that’s most likely the case with all of us. In a world of instant food and instant information at our fingertips, it’s tough to wait for a desired outcome. The traffic light turns green and if the car ahead doesn't move instantly, we honk our horn.

We search the web for a particular piece of information, the internet spins for more than 10 seconds and we give up or complain about how slow it is. We even find ourselves praying, “God please teach me patience. And I want it NOW!” From the time we are young, we are told that patience is a virtue. And while that may be so, it is a virtue that is the opposite of what seems natural. It’s easier to talk about than to practice. So, how do we learn to be more patient? Here are a few ideas that might help you courtesy of clinical psychologist Scott Bea, PsyD of the Cleveland Clinic. ● Practice mindfulness. Learn to be in the present moment without judging. ● Accept your current circumstances. Admittedly that can be difficult at times and it doesn't mean you don’t try to change things. It simply means accepting your ex-

perience in the moment for what it is. ● Work on building a tolerance for being a bit uncomfortable. Don’t immediately act on every impulse. ● When you feel rushed, consciously slow down. Recognize the value of slowing down at times. ● Be playful. Actively try to take yourself less seriously. ● Let it feel broken. Resist the urge to immediately fix everything. ● Practice being a good listener. Focus on understanding, rather than on formulating your response.

Dr. Bea says that it’s kind of like dancing. Some people are naturally better at it than others, but everyone can improve with practice.

Here’s another thought. Don’t try to become an expert at patience overnight. Like any other discipline, it takes time and consistency. Determine one area in your life where patience might have the biggest impact. Then tackle that area. Once you improve in that area, move on to the next. Not sure where to start, ask someone who knows you best. If they are honest, they’ll pinpoint the area you need the most help with patience. Maybe the best way to start is to be patient with yourself on your pathway to patience.

Tasting Events Spring to Life

pring has finally arrived! I am grateful for longer days and warmer sun, and I look forward with hope to all the gifts this season has to offer. In this week’s article, I’ll share some information on a few of our upcoming tastings, along with some notes on my favorite wines of the moment.

As I reflect on the challenges of the last two years, I am grateful that we have been able to return to our schedule of in-store tasting events, and share our passion for wine, w h i s ke y, and cocktails with our guest s .

We recently launched the following April events, and seats will likely fill up quickly.

Celebrating the Gin & Tonic – Saturday, April 9, 1pm, $35: Raise a glass with us for National Gin & Tonic Day! This classic cocktail has been a global favorite for decades. Its origins extend to the mid-nineteenth century, when British sailors utilized tonic water to ward off malaria during their travels to the Indian subcontinent. At this exclusive event, mixologist Megan will present three different cocktails, each handcrafted with a unique gin and tonic combination. Join us to explore these new variations on the classic G&T, and leave with some fun recipes to try on your own.

Debunking Wine Myths – Tuesday, April 12, 6:30pm, $32: Grapes have been harvested, crushed, and made into wine for over 8,000 years.

During that time, some common misconceptions have evolved into unquestioned truths. Through tasting and testing, we will explore some of these wine myths and determine which are fact and which are fiction.
