The Great Big, Beautiful Tomorrow

I was struck by one particular section of the Disney parks: Tomorrowland. Walt Disney dreamed of bringing the future to his guests and inspiring them to be an active part of shaping it. Celebrating Life at The Southern NJ Shore

“There's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow Shining at the end of every day There's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow And tomorrow's just a dream away Man has a dream and that's the start He follows his dream with mind and heart And when it becomes a reality It's a dream come true for you and me So there's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow Shining at the end of every day There's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow Just a dream away”

The song makes me think of our little publication, Shore Local. This month marks our sixth year in print, and Bob and I are so grateful for all of your support. Whether we have written about you, you’ve advertised with us, you write, photograph, or deliver our magazines, or if you simply picked up the paper at your grocery store, thank you for helping us be a part of today and tomorrow. We don’t know where Shore Local will take us in the coming years, but we know that we will continue shining a light on local heroes and telling the stories of the

incredible people, events, and places that make South Jersey a great place to live and visit. Even though the world has changed greatly and the digital world has sprouted before our eyes, print journalism is still an important part of every community. You can scroll through Facebook all you want, but nothing beats flipping the pages of a magazine, picking up a Sunday paper, or the fresh smell of a new book. Tangible publications are still very much alive and well. On the Spaceship Earth ride in Epcot, a journey that takes riders through historical moments in time, there’s an animatronic man standing by a printing press, holding a newspaper. A boy yells in the distance, “Extra! Extra! Read all about it!”. I feel like that little worker every time I post our articles online. I hope that even though it’s been six hundred years since Gutenberg invented the first printing press, newspapers still inform readers and make the world a more connected and happier place. We had a dream, now it's a reality. Thank you for being a part of our great, big beautiful tomorrow.

Peace & Love, Cindy

Ready for some March Madness... meteorologically speaking Weather By Dan Skeldon

S

outh Jersey weather can always be wild, any month, any season. From winter's nor'easters to summer's severe storms to tropical systems in the fall, our fickle weather always keeps us on our toes. But there's no month quite like March in terms of variety and volatility. It's the time of the year when seasons clash, and sometimes violently. It's the time when winter desperately tries to keep control, all the while spring makes repeated attempts at a coup that will of course ultimately be successful. It's the time when we're sometimes teased with a 70-something-degree spring fling one day, only to be rudely awakened by several inches of snow

just 24 to 48 hours later. Yes, there's March Madness, the college basketball tournament known for its Cinderella stories and wild finishes each year. And then there's meteorological March madness, which can often be just as crazy and unpredictable. I always take off the first weekend of the basketball tournament each year, as there are no better four days in all of sports, at least in my mind. But I seldom have the chance or the desire to take days off from forecasting the fun yet frustratingly fickle March weather. Just look at the extremes March can bring. At its hottest, temperatures can soar well into the 80s, with an alltime March high temperature of 87 degrees at the Atlantic City International Airport (ACY). And with the effects of climate change, summer-like warmth has become more common this early in the year. We've hit 80 degrees on 16 separate occasions during March, and 5 have been since the year 2000. That includes the earliest ever 80-degree day on record in South Jersey, back on March 10, 2016, and an 83-degree high on the first day of spring in 2020.

And then there's the colder side of March, when lows dip close to zero degrees and wind chills drop below zero. Single digit lows have been recorded 10 times in March at ACY, with the coldest ever March temperature a bone-chilling 2 degrees, set back on March 3, 2014. And while unseasonably warm weather during March has been a calling card of climate change, colder and snowier March weather has oddly been as well. Of those 10 single digit lows, half of them have occurred in the last 15 years Do the quick math between those warm and cold extremes, and you come up with an impressive 85 degree spread! That's a contrast that only March can offer and sometimes just days apart. And then there's the snow, especially lately. Historically, March is not traditionally a snowy month in South Jersey. Many years, the month brings little to no measurable snow. But over the last 10 years, that has changed. In 2014, major snowstorms on both St. Patrick's Day -and- a week later, one week into spring no less, dropped sizable spring snows on all of South Jersey. In 2018 in a cruel twist of fate, Mother Nature dumped a half foot of snow on the first day of spring itself. There's been a handful of winters of late when March ended up the snowiest month of the "winter", even if some of that snow fell into the start of spring. So clearly, March has wild variability. But in addition, it has the capability to swing so wildly in such a

short period of time. Sometimes, it takes only days, and in an extreme case, less than a day to go from spring warmth and sunshine to bitter winter cold and steady snow. This past week offered up a great example of that volatility. Record warmth was swept away by a squall line of gusty downpours, which was then followed by several opportunities for either a cold rain or some wet snow, all in the span of a few days. Despite our changing climate, March is still thankfully too early for tropical storms and hurricanes, and hopefully that never changes. But it's still the nor'easter season, and some memorable March storms fill the history books. The two most memorable are likely the Ash Wednesday storm of 1962, and the Superstorm of 1993. So as you fill out those tournament brackets this month and try to predict the unexpected, remember meteorologists are doing just that all month long. The tug-of-war between winter and spring rages on, as we wait to see just how many more tugs winter has left. Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Atlantic City Gambits Kick Off Their 2022 Season By Krystle J Bailey

T

he Atlantic City Gambits basketball team kicked off their 2022 season this week. On March 1, the team gathered at the Vue Rooftop Bar & Lounge at The Claridge for a much-anticipated media day. The coaching staff and team members each took turns introducing themselves and sharing their enthusiasm about the upcoming season that began on March 5th. The Gambits are a TBL (The Basketball League) expansion team, hosting 12 home games at Atlantic City High School and 12 on the road. TBL, which is a step below NBA’s G-League, consists of 42 teams across the country that compete from March through May. The Gambits joined the league in early 2021 under the ownership of Robert Baldeo at which time Elijah Thorpe was brought on as the team’s GM and head coach. Since then, the team has changed ownership to include owner Deshawn Ward, General Manager Frank Turner,

and President of Basketball Operations Kamau Johnson. The three South Jersey natives are committed to bringing winning basketball back to Atlantic City. Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. was in attendance at both the media day and the home opener this past Sunday. Small shared his excitement stating, “In Atlantic City, we have a history of winning. AC has won a championship in every sport. I’m happy to be here to support the Atlantic City

Getting Utterly Ranunculus in the Garden

Let It Grow By Tammy Thornton

A

fter a long, cold winter, we are all ready for some color in our gardens. But March and April can be a roller coaster of unpredictable weather. We get lured into thinking spring has arrived with warm days approaching 70, only to be crushed by freezing temperatures the following evening. Many perennials in the garden lie dormant, waiting for consistently warm days before they will wake up and bloom, and most annuals would never survive the cold temperatures of late winter and early spring. Fortunately, you can plant vibrant colorful flowers in your garden that look like a summer day, but thrive in cool temperatures. Ranunculus to the rescue! When you see ranunculus asiaticus for the first time, you won’t believe something with such an odd

name can be so incredibly beautiful. It’s one of the first flowers I seek when the garden nurseries open for the new season. They come in vibrant colors of red, yellow, orange, and pink. Ranunculus are also known by their more exotic name, Persian buttercups, which seems to capture their essence much better. But don’t be fooled by their beauty; these are tough flowers that laugh at the cold. Though they are happiest with temperatures in the 50s, ranunculus plants can survive a light frost. They are generally hardy in garden-

ing zones 8-10, but last year, I was delighted to see one of my plants come back to life from the previous spring, though we in South Jersey are in zone 7. This past winter was a bit harsher, so I don’t know if I will see that beautiful friend return this year. Though it’s easiest to buy a blooming ranunculus from your local gardening nursery, you may want to try your hand growing them from corms (similar to planting bulbs, but much uglier). In gardening zones 8-10, the corms can be planted in the fall for early spring blooms. But in growing zones 4-7, they most likely will not survive temperatures below 25 degrees. In these colder zones, you will want to plant corms in late winter. When you purchase the ranunculus corms they will look like a dried up sea creature with legs. Soaking them for a few hours in room temperature water will wake them up and encourage them to sprout. They will swell to almost twice their size. Plant them “legs” down in a sunny location with well drained soil, since they are prone to rot if the soil is too wet. You can expect the first flowers in about 90 days with blooms continuing until the weather is consistently hot. Ranunculus flowers are long-lasting and make beautiful bouquets for cut flowers, lasting about ten days. Ranunculus make great companion plants with other cool-season flowers such as daffodils, pansies, and candytuft. Mixed together in a pretty gardening pot, these spring

bloomers will chase away the winter blues. Once temperatures are consistently in the 70s, ranunculus will go dormant, because they do not like the heat. You can simply treat them as annuals, enjoying them while they last. But if you are lucky, you might get a surprise the next spring, and your beautiful friend might return to see you again. Shore Local News would love to hear about your favorite spring flowers. The Future of Atlantic City: Competing NY Casinos, New Developments By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

"I

get tired of hearing ‘Atlantic City’s going to be great again’ without details,” Lupo, the President of AC Hard Rock Casino, said. “We need to see some funding from the state and some real planning from the city. The streets need to be paved. There needs to be more light. There needs to be more police on the streets.”

Last week, AC Hard Rock President Joe Lupo, Senior Vice President of Tropicana Jacqueline Grace, Mark Giannantonio of Resorts and Paul Juliano of Bally’s met to explore ideas in the midst of New York City’s future plans to construct casinos in Manhattan and Queens. The casino bosses predict that a NY casinos won’t be on the scene until 2025 or 2026, but it's important to rebrand Atlantic City as a desirable destination. “If Atlantic City, its casinos, and state officials can work together to address those concerns, the impact from one or more New York casinos may be much less than it otherwise would,” the execs agreed. Lupo of Hard Rock Atlantic City has expressed concerns over NY’s addition of a Hard Rock Casino, and reported that even if one isn’t built in that city, Hard Rock plans on building either a racetrack or hotel-casino in North Jersey. Jim Allen, Chairman of Hard Rock International, hinted at building up to three casinos in the

tri-state area. “New York is coming,” said Lupo. Atlantic City has faced a variety of blights that have led to its loss of tourists, including poor infrastructure, dated entertainment options, and the appearance of dirty or unsafe neighborhoods. “Clean and safe, clean and safe, clean and safe. That has to be our mantra,” said Juliano of Bally’s. “You can change perception by reality.” Many real estate developers have come and gone, dreaming of transforming Atlantic City but either running out of money or spirit. Despite these disappointments, Atlantic City does have some upcoming projects that have the potential to bring the town back to its glory days. The Inlet anticipates the opening of North Beach Mini Golf. The spot between the seawall and Ocean Casino was once owned by Jared Kushner and then abandoned and destroyed by Superstorm Sandy will be revitalized, looking onto Brigantine beach with pride. A block across from the Absecon Lighthouse is slated for refurbishments, including a tennis court and potentially a pickleball court. The Intrieri Brothers plan on building a two-story mini golf and bike rental that connects to the Boardwalk. KY and The Curb, the former thriving, wealthy African American neighborhood on Kentucky Avenue, will be revived through the remodel of Kelsey’s (the famous soul food restaurant) and possibly a new branch of the Atlantic City African American Heritage Museum of South Jersey (led by Raph Hunter). Bally’s spokesperson Diane Spiers announced the development of Bally’s Yard, months after the casino decided not to continue with plans to open Harry’s Oyster Bar (by the Dougherty Brothers), which would compete directly with Knife & Fork and Doc’s Oyster Bar. Bally’s Yard will be covered with glass and offer a beautiful, modern biergarten with live entertainment. On Atlantic City’s old airstrip, Bader Field, duplexes and midi/high rise condominiums with a sustainable design. There will also be a driving court, 140 affordable housing options, and a 160-room hotel. Eric Feitshans, the LA-based investor, said, “If you provide all the normal

things a city should have, people will populate that.” Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. addressed these changes in his speech last month. In his State-ofthe-City address in the Caesars Ballroom, he said, “Everyone wants to talk about a grand slam. But Atlantic City, we're in a position where we need everything. We need some singles, some doubles. We need the sacrifice bunt. We need to get hit by

a pitch. We need to walk." What do you think Atlantic City needs to thrive? Email Shore Local Newsmagazine at shorelocalnews@ gmail.com. Sarah Fertsch is a writer and artist who has recently moved back to South Jersey. She loves satire, a good cup of coffee, and exploring new places.

Sarah Spencer Washington, A True Business Leader By Krystle J Bailey

S

ara Spencer Washington, more commonly known as “Madame Washington” was a historic figure in South Jersey

history. As an African American woman, Madame Washington shattered glass ceilings at every opportunity, creating a legacy that has lived on for decades since her passing in 1953. Sara Spencer Washington was originally from Beckley, Virginia, only making her way to Atlantic City as a young adult in pursuit of healing for her sick mother. The young dressmaker relocated to the Jersey Shore, where it was widely believed that the ocean air possessed healing properties for the sick. Washington began her career in South Jersey as a hairdresser in 1913 when she opened a beauty salon on

Arctic Avenue. She quickly became highly regarded as a hairstylist in her community. Washington became frustrated by the lack of beauty products for African American women and took it upon herself to create a solution. In 1920, she founded the Apex News & Hair Company. Apex was a hit, quickly growing well beyond the Atlantic City shoreline and into twelve

other states, the Caribbean, and South Africa. Washington was named one of the world's top ten businesswomen in 1939 at the New York World’s Fair. Atlantic City historian Vicki Gold has been quoted as saying, “I’ve always valued her (Washington) as an activist, businesswoman, creator, marketer and innovator. I thought she checked all the boxes, and she did it against a lot of odds in those days with prejudice and segregation. She managed to rise above it and command everyone’s respect.” Washington went on to become one of the country's first African American millionaires and was inducted into the Atlantic County Women's Hall of Fame. Madame Washington was a fierce advocate for the African American community. During her remarkable life, Washington founded Apex Rest, a senior living facility in Atlantic City as well as a local, racially inclusive, golf course. To rival the segregated parades happening across town, Washington founded the historical NorthSide Easter Parade on Arctic Avenue that was

We continue to celebrate Madame Washington this Women's History Month, honoring the life and legacy of such a dynamic South Jersey woman. Krystle J Bailey. Multimedia journalist, Author, Poet. How "Irish" are you this St. Patrick's Day?

Jeff's Journal By Jeff Whitaker

I

n another week a lot of us will be “wearin’ the green” if only for a day. March 17th is the one day a year when nearly everyone claims some sort of Irish heritage. As we approach St. Patrick’s Day, I thought I would share some interesting facts surrounding the day we celebrate and the man behind the celebration. Let’s take a short quiz and see how you do. No cheating. The answers are at the conclusion of my column. 1. St. Patrick’s Day began as a … ● A. Small birthday celebration to honor St. Patrick in the 17th Century. ● B. Day to mark the death of St. Patrick in the 18th Century. ● C. Religious feast in the 17th Century. ● D. None of the above.

2. Celebrants traditionally wear green on St. Patrick’s Day because … ● A. It’s the color originally worn by St. Patrick. ● B. Green is the color of shamrocks. ● C. The Irish Independence movement wore this color. ● D. None of the above. 3. St. Patrick was born in … ● A. Scotland. ● B. Ireland. ● C. Sweden ● D. Italy. 4. Irish immigrants first observed St. Patrick’s Day in … ● A. Chicago in 1849. ● B. New York in 1766. ● C. Baltimore in 1806. ● D. Boston in 1737. 5. Every year on St. Patrick’s Day, the city of Chicago dyes their river green. What year did this tradition begin? ● A. 1957? ● B. 1908? ● C. 1962? ● D. 1948? 6. The four leaf clover is traditionally associated with the day. According to the Daily Telegraph, the odds of you finding a four leaf clover are …

A. 1 in 10,000 B. 1 in 100 ● C. 1 in 1,000,000 ● D. 1 in 100,000 How did you do? Check out the answers below to see if you are a true St. Patrick’s Day expert. Answers: 1 - C. The original St. Patrick’s Day was a religious feast first held in the 17th century. 2 - C. Believe it or not the original color associated with the day was blue with St. Patrick himself depicted wearing blue robes. The shade is known today as azure blue. It wasn’t until the 18th century that green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day after it was linked to the Irish independence movement. 3 - A. St. Patrick was actually born in Scotland and his parents were Roman. 4 - D. Irish immigrants began observing St. Patrick’s day in Boston in 1737. The first St Patrick’s Day parade was held in New York City in 1766. So, if you guessed New York 5 - C. The tradition of dying the ● ●

river green in Chicago began in 1962. The dye lasts for about four hours before it dissipates. 6 - A. According to the Daily Telegraph, the odds of finding a four leaf clover are 1 in 10,000. So now you have a little trivia you can throw around to your friends and family. No matter what your heritage, my wish for you this March 17th is that the road will rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. Disney World Finds Resort Inspiration From the Jersey Shore By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

R

ecently, I found myself donning Minnie Mouse ears and romping around Magic Kingdom like a five-yearold. Disney World has always held a special place in my heart. After a twenty-year hiatus, my mom and I did a women’s trip to the most magical place on Earth. It was everything I could have imagined and more! As we were riding carousels and singing “It’s a Small World,” I noticed something that reminded me of home. That’s right, Disney World has emulated our beach towns and their iconic landmarks to sell to their guests. The most magical place on Earth turns out to be the Jersey Shore. Allow me to explain. I’m talking about Disney’s Boardwalk Inn. The moderately-deluxe resort offers great theming and its boardwalk. The Disney website describes the venue like this, “Experience the charm and whimsy of turn-of-the-century Atlantic City at this waterfront ho-

tel.” Guests are made to feel like children ready to ride the Diving Bell or witness a heroic jump from a high-diving horse. The boardwalk of Boardwalk Inn is impressive, although it could never compete with the longest boardwalk in the world, Atlantic City. The Disney structure sits alongside Lake Promise and offers various recreation options. On the boardwalk, you can grab drinks at Jelly Rolls, a cocktail bar that has live music every night (a dueling pianos show, similar to the one you’d find at Hard Rock Casino). The Abracadabra has some unique drinks and performers who visit every table. There’s a dance hall too, known as the Atlantic Dance Club, which unfortunately tends to be pretty empty even on the weekends. The Side Show Games Arcade welcomes families to play some old-fashioned skeeball or air hockey. Restaurants like the Flying Fish boast fresh seafood, and there are also ice cream parlors, candy stores, and gift shops. As for amenities, guests can rent surreys and ride along the boardwalk, just like at the Jersey Shore. There are three pools, with the main pool themed around amusement piers like Luna Park or Steel Pier. The carousel structure is a bar named Leaping Horse Libations. The waterslide is long and grand (200 feet long), ap-

pearing identical to the Coney Island Cyclone. The pool is surrounded by friendly, colorful elephants that spray water, and guests can challenge each other to mini-golf at the Fantasia course at the resort. You can find classic South Jersey food, like funnel cake, thin-crust pizza, fudge, saltwater taffy, chili dogs and corn dogs, and hand-scooped ice cream. At Disney’s Beach Club Resort, you’ll find rooms and amenities themed around New England beach towns, but the resort has one aptly-named restaurant: Cape May Cafe. This casual dining option offers char-

Over 50Years of Goodness

acter dining and Cape May classics like lobster, steamed clams, and “beach buns” (which are similar to Mallon’s sticky buns). If you would like to stay at the Boardwalk Inn, room rates can be pretty expensive. It costs approximately $200 for the most standard room. Family suites are available, but this hotel seems more geared toward adults. The room theme is pretty cool, with a lot of beach elements like pinstripes, dark woods, and even pictures of Lucy the Elephant! You can always book a room (when there is a vacancy, which is somewhat rare), but to save some money, celebrate what our hometown has to offer. We have a rich history! So taste some saltwater taffy, ride a surrey, and visit a boardwalk. Our home is pretty magical! Sarah Fertsch is a writer and artist who has recently moved back to South Jersey. Discover Lamb Camp at Misty Meadows Sheep Dairy

By Erica Hoffman

R

ecently, I spent some time at Misty Meadow Sheep Dairy in the Petersburg section of Upper Township. As I stepped onto the soil of the sprawling 16 acres of land that is the only Grade A Dairy farm in South Jer-

sey, I instantly felt at home. This is especially surprising because home for me is usually a salty ocean mist and views of the back bay. I don’t know if it was the herd of dogs running past me as I entered the gates, the soft echo of bleating newborn lambs or being greeted by an old friend, but I was home. This is precisely what Bill and Barbara Simmerman, the hardworking duo behind Misty Meadow, were aiming for when they moved back to New Jersey several years ago after realizing they were not the “retiring in Florida” type. Since opening their post-retirement labor of love, they have worked relentlessly to make their dream of having a haven for families (theirs and yours) to gather, learn about the dairy process, and spend much-needed time reconnecting with nature. They do this in all sorts of different ways, but my personal favorite is their Lamb Camp. During a lamb camp session, each paid camper gets to care for a newborn lamb—everything

from keeping them company and cleaning them to bottle-feeding. The dairy just ended their first lamb camp weekend, which runs Fridays – Sundays through March and April. And is $25 per one-hour session. “Everyone had a great time, especially the adults,” said Britney Schroder, one of Misty Meadow’s most enthusiastic volunteers. In addition to the fantastic cheese and ice cream they regularly make and sell in their retail store, they offer a Spring Market that has a ton of

food and craft vendors, farm tours, mini photography sessions with the newborn lambs, tractor rides, petting zoos, and more. They are still accepting vendors for this season. If you are interested in becoming a vendor, please send an email to event@ mistymeadowsheepdairy.com. Things to keep in mind if you’d like to sign up for Lamb Camp: sessions are held in an outdoor ‘hoop’ barn (think an outdoor barn with a large arched ceiling) so make sure to wear closed-toed shoes. It began on Tuesday, March 6 and raged unabated for two days. The reporting began, “It will be many years before all the scars left by this week’s devastating storm are completely eradicated. Ocean City suffered severe damage, but by the greatest good fortune no lives were lost here, nor were any serious injuries reported. “The section hardest hit locally was the area south of 34th Street to the end of the island at 59th Street. Houses in the Gardens section of the city have been badly damaged. The central business district was flooded and few stores escaped damage to property and stock.” On Monday, March 12, 1962, Mayor B. Thomas Waldman said, “While there will be many scars left from the storm, Ocean City will be ready to welcome visitors by Memorial Day.”

Five Recipes That Taste Like Sweet, Sweet Springtime

By Sarah Fertsch Staff Writer

I

t’s March, time to get ready to break out your floral dresses and pastel pants! Goodbye winter, we won’t miss your icy roads and below freezing temperatures. We are onto greater things, like breaking out the lawn furniture and getting your flowerbeds ready. Let’s upgrade our palette as the seasons change, and introduce some seasonal foods. Including fresh produce and herby garnishes will make your dishes pop. Here are five recipes that welcome spring with open arms and taste wonderful: Lemon Blueberry Salad Ingredients: ● Greens of choice, preferably arugula or spinach ● ½ cup of freshly-squeezed lemon juice ● ¼ cup of feta cheese ● ½ cup of fresh blueberries ● 6 cloves of roasted garlic ● ¼ cup of sugar-coated pecans ● A protein of choice, preferably grilled chicken, shrimp or chickpeas ● Salt ● Pepper ● Raspberry Vinaigrette Chop and clean produce. Juice lemons, roast garlic and put to the side.

26

Cook protein as desired. Grill chicken, saute shrimp or bake chickpeas on a sheet pan. In a large bowl, combine leafy base, garlic, blueberries, lemon juice, pecans, feta, salt and pepper. Mix gently until ingredients are evenly distributed. Place protein on top and enjoy it as a lunch or dinner. Ham and Cheese Quiche Ingredients: ● ½ lb of ham, pre-cooked ● 7 large eggs ● 1 cup of whole milk ● Premade pie crust ● 1 cup of shredded cheddar ● 1 cup of fresh spinach ● Salt ● Pepper ● Fresh dill, chopped Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll pie crust onto a pie pan and brush melted butter on top. Poke holes in the crust using a fork and bake for fifteen minutes until the pie crust is flaky, golden and fragrant. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, dill, spinach, salt,

pepper and half of the cheddar. Pour into the cooled pie crust. Dice ham and drop it into the quiche. Top with the rest of the cheese and bake for 45-50 minutes until the quiche is firm. Let cool for ten minutes and eat up! Strawberry Cupcakes Ingredients: ● 2 cups of all-purpose flour ● 1 cup of white sugar ● 2 sticks of unsalted butter ● 2 tbsp of strawberry extract ● 1 tbsp of vanilla extract ● 1 tsp of salt ● 1 tsp of baking powder ● 1/8 cup of lemon zest ● 2 cups of powdered sugar ● 1 block of cream cheese ● 6 fresh strawberries (more for topping the cupcake) In a large bowl, stir together flour, salt, and baking powder. Using an electric mixer, combine sugar, butter, strawberry extract, vanilla extract and lemon zest until creamy and smooth. Slowly and in batches, add the dry mixture into the wet mixture and stir together so there are no clumps and the batter is thick. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place muffin wrappers in a muffin tin and pour batter into each slot. Bake for 30-40 minutes and let cool for 10 minutes. Using the electric mixer, combine powdered sugar, whole strawberries (cleaned), and cream cheese to make the icing. Scoop into an icing bag and frost each cupcake. Place a strawberry on top as a garnish. Delicious! Crockpot Hawaiian Chicken with Rice Ingredients: ● 6 chicken thighs, boneless and skinless ● 1 can of pineapple ● 2 cups of barbecue sauce ● Salt ● Pepper ● ¼ cup of soy sauce ● 2 tbsp of honey ● 7 cloves of garlic, crushed ● ¾ cup of coconut milk ● Basmati or jasmine rice Place chicken in the crockpot. Pour atop pineapple, coconut milk, barbecue sauce, soy sauce, honey, garlic, salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly and place the lid over the crockpot. Cook on low for 6-7 hours. Rinse rice and cook with (1 cup per cup of rice) water in a saucepan over medium heat covered on the stove-

top. Let the rice absorb water until the pan is dry, 10-20 minutes. Spoon rice into serving bowls and top with chicken. This dish makes for the perfect dinner! Peach Honey Smash (Batch Cocktail) Ingredients: ● 2 peaches ● 3 tbsp of honey ● 4 shots of bourbon whiskey ● ½ cup of sugar ● 1 cup of tonic water ● 1/8 cup of lemon juice

Wash peaches (and peel them, removing pit) and add to a blender. Pour honey, lemon juice and sugar and add ½ cup of water. Blend until there are no clumps and strain into a pitcher. Add whiskey and tonic water and stir. Pour over another pitcher filled with ice. Enjoy this refreshing and strong beverage! We're All Irish On St. Patrick's Day

By Steffen Klenk

M

arch 17th is the most important day on the Irish calendar. While this day resembles luck and fortune, wearing anything with the color green and drinking your favorite pint of beer, it also has a very significant meaning. St. Patrick’s Day is regarded as one of the most important holidays in Ireland and throughout Irish culture. Celebrated every year on March 17th, this day honors the life of Saint Patrick, Patron Saint of Ireland. Born in Scotland, he was credited for bringing Christianity to Ireland during the 5th century. He learned about the various customs, traditions and language before teaching religion and becoming a bishop. Patrick died on March 17th, 461. The earliest celebrations of St. Patrick’s life date back to the ninth century, but it wasn’t until the early 1600’s when a more formal holiday was adopted. March 17th has since been considered a holy day, and is marked by many celebrations worldwide. In Ireland, the day begins with a traditional church service, followed by a day of parades and food. Last year’s

celebrations in Dublin drew an attendance of over 100,000 visitors from around the world. Originating in 1771, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Philadelphia is one of the oldest parades in the country, and takes place the Sunday before March 17th. Festival goers and onlookers will line the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as the parade makes its way to Penn’s Landing. More than 120 bands and 150,000 marchers will take part in New York’s annual parade, a tradition that dates back to 1762. The city of Chicago has taken a unique twist to the holiday. Every year, the Chicago River is decorated with over 40 lbs. of green dye. This process takes approximately 45 minutes to complete. Tens and thousands of people will flock to Chicago for this year’s festivities. Many commonly mistake leprechauns as bringing good luck or fortune. In folklore, the leprechaun is a small fairy with a beard. Short in stature, these mischievous creatures would end up playing tricks, deceive people. Shamrocks, or three-leaf clovers, are common symbols for the Holy Trinity, but Americans commonly get this confused to the four-leaf clover. Four-leaf clovers stand for faith, hope, love and luck. Legend believes that finding one is a symbol of good fortune, but your odds of looking over one are slim. Only

1 in 5,000 clovers have four leaves, making them exceptionally rare. Traditional foods such as pink bacon, savory roast chicken and potatoes are about as Irish as you can get. Corned beef and cabbage is a popular dish enjoyed by Irish Americans. Irish potatoes are another treat that becomes popular around this time of year, but don’t be deceived by its name. While they may look like potatoes, these sweet treats originated in the Philadelphia region and are actually made of coconut and cinnamon. Traditional Irish music is often comprised of ballads, drinking songs and laments performed in an accompaniment of instruments such as the flue, fiddle and bagpipes. are performed for audiences far and wide. Many of today’s modern bands have been influenced by traditional Irish songs, bringing a new twist to the Celtic sound such as Celtic

fusion. The Coors, Gaelic Storm and Lunasa have acclaimed success worldwide for their unique sound. Nearly forty percent of Americans will take part in a day of celebration on March 17th. On this day, many will attend church to honor the Patron Saint Patrick. Party goers will enjoy a round of Guinness and attend social gatherings; others may decorate their homes and plan a special meal with their family and friends. Whether you are of Irish decent or not, St. Patrick’s Day has become a worldwide celebration of Irish history and culture that will continue to be celebrate for generations to come. Healthy Slow cooking

Nutrition By Nancy Adler

S

low cooking is a very healthy way to cook. The sealed chamber helps to keep all the nutrients and the moisture in your foods. The slow and low method helps to prevent the formation of cancer causing compounds. Some people tend to think the slow cooking method destroys nutrients when it’s actually doing the opposite. The lower temperatures preserve the nutrients, especially Vitamin C and vitamin B, which can be lost when cooking rapidly at a high heat. When boiling vegetables over a long period of time nutrients are lost. When you slow cook them you tend to make stews, casseroles, soups and curries dishes you eat with the juices and sauces they are cooked in. In fact, food cooked slowly tastes better! This recipe may be found in “Nancy’s Recipes for Life” available at my Linwood office Location and Capellas Oil and Vinegar Store in Ocean City

Directions Lightly coat sides and bottom of 5 quart crock pot with spray oil. Brown hamburger, drain grease, add soup base and onions. Add all ingredients to the crockpot. Stir and cover. Cook on HIGH for 2 hours or on LOW for 4 or more hours for thawed hamburger. If using frozen seasoned hamburger, increase cook times 1 hour HIGH or 2 hours LOW. Leftovers freeze well. More Veggies at the Dinner Table Moms Vibe: By Krystle J Bailey

I

don’t know about you,, but I get into lazy-mom mode in the winter. Frozen pizzas, takeout, and boxed macaroni slowly become our winter dinner staples. By the time the sun goes down at the end of the day, I simply don’t feel like cooking an elaborate meal and usually opt for a dose of comfort or convenience. That being said, this year, I got a little too relaxed when it comes to fruits and veggies. As the sun begins to stay out a little longer and I come out of the winter blues, I’ve been looking for ways to sneak some fruits and veggies into everyone’s diet. My kids are super picky when it comes to the good stuff, so these creative, healthy hacks are necessary.

32

Veggie Cheese Sauce This is a sneaky way to get cauliflower, carrots, sweet potatoes, or any other lightly colored vegetable into your family meals. Simply puree your veggie of choice and mix it into the sauce you’re already using. My kids love boxed macaroni and cheese. You can use the cheese that comes with the box, simply adding to the sauce by adding pureed vegetables. The kids will hardly notice and you’ll take a mom dinner victory. Beef Up the Beef Whether you’re making tacos, meatballs, meatloaf, or some other meaty dinner, you can hide veggies in it. Shred broccoli stalk or finely chop and saute veggies of your choice before mixing it into the meat prior to cooking. Once the meat is cooked, the veggies will hardly be noticeable and everyone at the table wins. Adding sauteed mushrooms to any meat mixture beefs up the volume while adding nutrients and keeping the meal moist and delicious.

This for That Baked goods are a super easy way to get some sneaky nutrients in. In most baked dishes, you can easily mask black beans or sweet potatoes. Butter and oil can be replaced with avocados, apple sauce, and Greek yogurt. Check out this black bean, avocado brownie recipe from ambitiouskitchen.com. Ingredients: ● 1 (15 oz) can of black beans, rinsed and drained ● 2 eggs or flax eggs (add an additional egg if you like cakier brownies!) ● 1/2 of a large ripe avocado ● 1 tablespoon melted coconut oil ● 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder plus 1 tablespoon ● 1/2 teaspoon baking powder ● 1/4 teaspoon baking soda ● 1/4 teaspoon salt ● 1 teaspoons pure vanilla extract ● 2/3 cup coconut sugar or sub brown sugar (or sub 1/2 cup pure maple syrup) ● 1/3 cup chocolate chips + 2 tablespoons for topping Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 8x8 inch baking pan

Place all ingredients besides chocolate chips into blender or food processor. Process or puree until ingredients form a smooth batter. If the batter is WAY too thick and won't process then add in a teaspoon or two of water. This batter needs to be very thick in order to produce fudgy brownies. Add in 1/3 cup chocolate chips and fold into batter. Pour batter into prepared pan, sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of remaining chocolate chips. You can also fold in nuts or swirl in peanut butter. Bake for 25-35 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out somewhat clean and top of the brownies begin to crack. Cool pan completely on wire rack then cut into 12 delicious large brownies! Butter it Up When in doubt, butter it up. If you’re not a fan of sneaking veggies into meals, look for creative ways to serve the veggies as sides. Cooking veggies in flavors that the kids like can encourage them to try something they may otherwise turn their noses up at. Butter, garlic, salt, and parmesan cheese are all staple flavors for vegetable cooking. Melted cheese on anything is always a golden opportunity for the veggie-hater to give something a chance. When in doubt, switch it up. Your child might not like roasted carrots but maybe they’ll like them raw with a fun dip. Don’t give up after the first attempt. Veggie fries, chips, and tots are all great ways to up the fiber intake this Spring. As the seasonal depression and cold winter days fade into the sunset, it’s time to refocus and re-energize. Fruits and veggies for the whole family will have everyone feeling vibrant and ready for the warm days ahead. Krystle J Bailey. Multimedia journalist, Author, Poet. ow, I know what you’re thinking…”but Pete, the Big Dance doesn’t really start this year until March 17th!” However, I would argue that March Madness has already begun, as the 2022 Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships are already taking place in Atlantic City. As I write this, the Stockton Men’s Basketball team is one of only 16 schools still alive in the NCAA D-3 Tournament. On the local level, a few high school teams are having great March success. But it’s more than just local hoops right now. Since I last wrote, James Harden has exploded onto the scene with the Sixers. The Eagles evaluated prospects at the NFL combine in Indy, and a few local faces stood out. The Flyers posted a rare win, but are still looking toward next year. The Phillies and all of MLB seem further away from a resolution to the labor dispute than ever. Which leads

Mainland Girls and Boys celebrate CAL Championships - Courtesy - Scott Betson into the local items, as a local athlete begins his second year in pro baseball with the Phillies. Elsewhere, a Cape May native, and Lower Cape May grad officially calls it a career. I mentioned the Stockton Ospreys above, as they are through to the Sweet 16. Finally, it was a clean sweep for one school in the CAL Basketball Championship. From entertainment, my girlfriend and I enjoyed the finale of one of our favorite reality shows. Plus, an actor best known for his role in the “Twilight” series tries to give a boost to an iconic movie character. As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts:

Once again, it’s almost a MUST that I begin with the Sixers as they are now a perfect “five and oh” in the games that James Harden has suited up with them since the All-Star Break. So far, Harden has been “better than advertised” as he seems capable of a triple-double just about every night and to my eyeballs, has instantly made Tyrese Maxey better. As I write this, Harden has tied Reggie Miller for 3rd on the career 3-pointers list, draining his 2,560th in a 121-106 win over Chicago at the Wells Fargo Center. MVP candidate Joel Embiid the big story from the

win, as he puts up 43 points and 14 rebounds, that’s his 10th 40 & 10 output so far this year! At the same time, don’t sleep on Harden who quietly finished the game with 16 points, 14 assists and 8 rebounds. I don’t think I fully understood how much Harden can make other teammates better until I’ve seen him play on the regular now with the Sixers. Digest this factoid from ESPN Stats & Info. Joel Embiid, James Harden and Tyrese Maxey combined for 176 points in their first two games together. The only trio with more points in their first two games together in NBA history is Wilt Chamberlain, Paul Arizin & York Larese with 193 points in 1961. You like that one? How about this? James Harden, Joel Embiid & Tyrese Maxey are the first trio in NBA history to score 20-plus points in their first four games together. Again, as I write this, in all five games that Harden has played, the Sixers have won. Only a game in Miami, where he sat to rest his hamstring, did the Sixers fall.

Up next, a home game in Philly against the Brooklyn Nets. Now, as I type this, reports are that Ben Simmons WILL join the Nets on the bench at the Wells Fargo Center, however he definitely won’t play in the game as he claims to be suffering from a back injury. Let me ask you this…do you think there will be some BOOS that rain down on the former Sixer? I just hope the Philly fans behave and nothing nefarious happens! In football, the Eagles and the rest of the NFL descended upon Indianapolis for the NFL combine. Remember, the Eagles have three first-round

Bo Melton at NFL Combine draft picks and Indy is where you get to assess the prospects that are out there. Two athletes from Rutgers with local ties were there too as Cedar Creek grad Bo Melton and Vineland grad Isaih Pacheco both appeared to increase their value at

the combine. Pacheco ran a 4.37 in the 40-yard dash, which was tied for the fastest time by a running back. Melton posted a 4.34 time on his second attempt at the 40. He’s an intriguing prospect because he’s listed as a wide receiver, but he can also perform like a runner, sort of out of the Deebo Samuel mold. Melton and Pacheco have a chance to be the first Rutgers’ players drafted since Blessuan Austin in 2019. To hockey now, where as I write this, the Flyers are coming off a rare win. 4-3 over the Blackhawks, as the Flyers win for only the 17th time on the season. It’s no coincidence that they won a physical game against Chicago on a day where Derick Brassard came back and scored. Cam Atkinson with two goals and assist. The two proud franchises are near the bottom of the NHL standings, with the Blackhawks beginning the day with more points than only seven NHL teams and the Flyers last in the Eastern Conference’s Metro Division with just three teams in the league having fewer points. This detail almost makes me cry. The win over the Blackhawks on March 5th was a far cry from the 2010 Stanley Cup showdown when the Blackhawks won their fourth

overall title and first of three in six years. Why my tears? Well, because I am a lifelong Flyers fan still waiting for them to win a Stanley Cup in my years of following the team. Keep in mind, I was age 3 and age 4 when they won their two Cups. I have watched the Flyers in the Stanley Cup Finals in 1980, 1985, 1987, 1997 and 2010. They have LOST them all. Meanwhile, the Claude Giroux “trade watch” continues. Giroux, 34, is expected to waive his no-movement clause and be dealt by the March 21st deadline. The Florida Panthers are the latest team to reportedly be “hot on the trail” of the Flyers captain. In 52 games this season, Giroux has 40 points (17 goals, 23 assists) for Philadelphia, a team at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division standings. Giroux was named the MVP of the All-Star tournament.

Mike Adams at BPC in Pleasantville

And, yes, he won’t say it, but you have to think he would like a chance to win a Stanley Cup in his career. Florida, with a 37-13-5 as I write this, is a strong contender as it has the fourth-most points in the NHL. Again, stay tuned. From baseball, things don’t look good as the owners and players continue to be on completely different sides regarding a new collective-bargaining agreement. Already a week of regular season games has been canceled. Another week might go if talks continue to result in an impasse. Consider me bummed. Now, despite the labor dispute, my guy Mike Adams has left South Jersey and the Baseball Performance Center in Pleasantville to head back down to Florida for Year #2 with the Phillies organization. You might recall that Adams is the pitching instructor turned professional as he got as high as Lehigh Valley last year. Fingers crossed that Adams can make it up to the big leagues this year. Speaking of which, Matt Szczur has officially retired from professional baseball. I covered Szczur way back when he was in high school at Lower Cape May and then continued to follow him as he went on to have great success in college baseball and college football at Villanova. You’d have to think that Szczur’s greatest moment in pro baseball has to be the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series in 2016. The 32-year-old saw big league action in five straight seasons from 2014-18, with the bulk of that time spent with the Cubs. Szczur moves on from baseball as the owner of a .231/.312/.355 career stat-line with 12 MLB home runs over 667 plate appearances. He played parts of ten seasons in the minors and hit .273/.332/.401 over five years at Triple-A. He plans to expand his career as an artist and also spend more time with his wife and young son in Cape May. Wishing you all the best Matt…!!!

In local basketball, the Stockton Ospreys are through to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA D-3 Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2014. I was thrilled to provide color commentary on the YouTube live stream alongside John Leon on play-by-play for a 70-63 nail biting win over Johns Hopkins to advance. The Ospreys now head to Marietta, Ohio where they will play Christopher Newport in the Sweet 16 and if they advance, they’ll get the winner of Marietta / Oswego State next for the chance to go to the D-3 Final Four. Congrats to Head Coach Scott Bittner and the rest of his players and staff. Go Ospreys! At the high school level, I have to give major props to the Mainland boys and girls basketball teams. The Mustangs made it a clean sweep in the Cape Atlantic League Basketball Championship games as the boys rode an eight-seed all the way to a tournament win. The boys beat St. Augustine in the final, while the girls beat Wildwood Catholic. Congrats to the Mustang boys and girls programs as that had to be a special Saturday for both programs. As I write this, the Mainland girls have beaten Timber Creek to win the South Jersey Group 3 Championship. Bella Mazur with a gamehigh 17 points. Seniors Camryn Dirkes and Kaitlyn Boggs come up clutch too. Boggs finishes with 12 points and 12 rebounds in the 53-24 win over Timber Creek. The Mainland girls are 28-2 and next face Ewing in a state semifinal game. Again, congrats Mustangs! They’re a little south of our delivery area, but major props to the Wildwood girls basketball team as well. The Warriors win the South Jersey Group 1 championship and their first sectional title since 2017 with 50-38 win over Woodbury. This is sweet redemption as Wildwood lost in the sectional final in each of the last three years they were held (there were no sectional playoffs last season due to the COVID-19 pandemic), including to Woodbury in the 2019-20 season. Wildwood coach Teresa Cunniff is doing a great job of extending the success that longtime coach Dave Troiano had. Up next, Wildwood (23-4) plays Shore Regional in a state Group 1 semifinal game. As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment, starting with the 33rd season finale of “The Amazing Race” on CBS. I’ve watched every season of the show since its debut on September 5th 2001, but it’s possible this was one of the strangest seasons ever. Two years before The Amazing Race began filming — production went

PT & Stockton Coach Scott Bittner

into a 19-month hiatus due to the coronavirus. They started filming the show, and had to halt because of the pandemic. Ultimately, internet video personalities Kim and Penn Holderness crossed the finish line first and won the $1 million prize. I love “The Amazing Race” because I it makes me feel like I get to travel the world, but also see the human “drama” between the teams. Just great! Lastly, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll see me at the Tilton Square Theater or Ventnor Square Theater soon as “The Batman” is now out and I am definitely planning on checking that out in the actual movie theater. The newest superhero epic, starring Robert Pattinson as an exceptionally moody Caped Crusader, collected $134 million in North American theaters over its the weekend, above the previous es-

timates of $128.5 million, according to Variety. Those ticket sales rank as the best opening of 2022, as well as only the second pandemic-era movie to cross the $100 million mark in a single weekend following “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Oh yes, get my popcorn ready! For the first time since 2019, I get to end this column without saying too much about Covid-19 other than to say, “MASKS OFF”! I’m excited about that, and hope you are too. I do hope that we will all keep leading with KINDNESS. I want to also write that my sincere thoughts & prayers are with the people of Ukraine. Where to Celebrate the Luck of the Irish this St Patrick’s Day

Going Places with Dina Guzzardo

S

t Patrick’s Day in the USA has become a national day of partying like the Irish. It is a day that most of us can honestly say they have celebrated before by wearing an outrageous green outfit and drinking copious amounts of Guinness, Jameson’s, or Baileys because whether you station yourself at your favorite Irish pub for the day, watch a parade, or join a pub crawl, the day is guaranteed to be memorable. This year there are many events happening in our area starting with Atlantic City. The event to check out this year is the St. Paddy Pub Crawl and Ryfe Two Year Anniversary All Day Party. Doors open at 9am at Ryfe (4101 Atlantic Avenue) with giveaways, contests, drink discounts, $2 Mimosas, $3 Bloody Mary’s, and their annual Kegs and Eggs Breakfast. There will be door prizes for the first 40 guests at the door and free t-shirts, sunglasses, gift certificates, food, and drinks. The crawl itself commences at 11am, with both food and drink establishments participating. The crawl can be started at Ryfe or any of the other locations, including legendary Santucci’s in Ventnor (6413 Ventnor Avenue, Ventnor City); Vagabond (672 N Trenton Avenue), which was made famous on Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives; and Wonder Bar (3701 Sunset Avenue), one of the most popular and acclaimed spots to enjoy an expertly crafted cocktail on the water in Atlantic City. There will be a complimentary shuttle service working in a loop of the crawl, starting at Ryfe at 12pm, then onto Santucci’s, Vagabond, and finally, Wonder Bar, returning to Ryfe thereafter. A special surprise giveaway to commemorate Ryfe’s 2 year “we-survived-the-pandemic” anniversary party will take place at 6pm, with VIP awards for Ryfe’s most devoted patrons, live music, and food specials. There is no official end time, and Ryfe has committed to staying open until the last person leaves! Tickets are only $15, and registration includes a complimentary welcome drink, complimentary drink cup, exclusive access to food and drink

AxiPDfs. Further down the shore in North Wildwood, the annual St Patrick’s Day Celebration and Parade begin at 10am with a Catholic Mass service at St. Ann Church of Notre Dame La Mer Parish. The ceremony begins at 12 pm on the front steps of North Wildwood City Hall, 9th & Atlantic Avenue. Terri O’Connor, widow of Corporal James O’Connor who was tragically murdered in 2020 while on duty, will be honored as the Grand Marshal of the parade. The parade is a popular event

in North Wildwood, often drawing several hundred spectators. These are just some of the great events taking place over the St Patrick’s Day weekend, and the diverse range of activities allows for everyone to join in with festivities. ick and Vinny Faldetta of Egg Harbor Township bring “double the fun,” double the grit and double the grind to everything they do. The hard-working, 17-year-old twins have always done everything together, especially sports. They played on the same youth soccer, baseball, and football teams side-byside as young kids, eventually finding their way to the wrestling mat at the age of seven. All other sports slowly became a distant memory when the boys began training with Jimmy Garrett of Orchard South Wrestling Club. After one year of wrestling at Orchard, something began to shift within the twins, as wrestling became their primary focus. “Before wrestling, everything we did was a team sport. As a wrestler, everything is on you. That makes you work harder, and I was seeing myself start to get better,” shares Nick Faldetta.

“It was just exciting every time we showed up to practice. We felt differently wrestling with Jimmy than other people. It wasn’t just wrestling; we were having fun,” adds Vinny. By the time the duo reached high school, they were ready to compete at the next level. As freshmen, they both placed 4th in their district. Now, coming off a complicated Covid season as juniors, Nick and Vinny came to win. They set their eyes on the prize and got to work on the mat. “This was a vengeful season after the one we didn’t have last year. I had ten matches total last year. I came back hungry,” shares Nick, who wrestled at 144lbs this year. “It was an energy-filled season. The whole season, I was preparing and constantly adjusting, fixing mistakes, and preparing. I had it in my mind what I was doing, where I was going, and what I was getting to,” adds Vinny at 138lbs. As District 32 wrestling came to a close, Nick and Vinny both took the podium, finishing in 2nd and 3rd places, respectively. They were on their way to Region 8 wrestling at Egg Harbor Township High School, checking off the goal they set at the beginning of the year. “Over the years, they’ve always been under the radar, the underdog,” explains the twins’ mom, Stephanie Faldetta. “But they were silently working

all year-round with Jimmy.” Nick and Vinny left it all on the mat at regions, ultimately finishing in 7th out of 8 in their respective weight classes. Nick finished his season with a 26-13 record, while Vinny finished at 26-14. “I’m proud of the twins,” states coach Jimmy Garrett. “I like the fact that they stayed the course. They didn’t club hop. They’re a product of planting the seed and letting it grow. These were kids that everyone counted out. The same twins that were written off at one point are winning. That makes me proud more than anything.” Nick and Vinny took a moment to celebrate their accomplishments this season but already have their eyes set on their senior year. With plans to continue their training throughout the summer, the boys are laser-focused on wrestling at the state level in 2023. Over the years, the discipline learned on the wrestling mat has expanded into Nick and Vinny’s personal lives. The twins are dedicated to their education, both work year-round jobs and continue to prepare for their future in wrestling. “This sport changes the way you

think and the way you act. The discipline transcends into other areas of your life,” shares Nick Faldetta. “Some kids have good grades; some kids are athletic. Mine are both, and they maintain a job all year while wrestling six days per week. I’m really proud of them,” says Stephanie Faldetta, who the boys refer to as their “screaming supporter.” “Our mom takes us to everything. She’s our biggest fan. No matter how far it is or how much it costs, she writes us down for every tournament,” shares Vinny about his mom. College scouts have been visiting the Faldetta twins, but decisions have yet to be made. When asked if they would prefer to stay together, both Nick and Vinny agree that given the choice, they’d prefer to keep doing the “twin thing” side by side. However, they are open to what the future holds. For now, they will continue to give it all they’ve got on the mat and in life. Krystle J Bailey. Multimedia journalist, Author, Poet. Real Estate Matters By Elisa Jo Eagan

I

f you are looking for ways to diversify your investments, build additional streams of income, or put your home's equity to work for the long-term, you may be considering a real estate investment. Here are nine questions you should ask yourself as you begin developing your real estate investment portfolio. 1) What Type of real estate investment model will you pursue? There are a variety of ways to invest in real estate. You may choose to purchase a "Handyman Special" or find an undervalued property, fix it up, then offer it for resale. This short-term investment is called a fix-and-flip. Alternatively, if you identify a property that you may want to keep long-term, especially now in a strong rental market like ours is, you may want to pursue a buy-andhold strategy. A long-term yearly rental, vacation rental property, or a short-term Airbnb investment may be for you. 2) What types of updates are needed for a flip? Often, flippers will favor low-cost, high-impact cosmetic improvements to enhance the marketability of the property and increase its appeal to potential buyers, such as kitchen, bath, flooring, and other attractive updates. Complete any repairs and updates quickly to minimize the carrying costs of the property, including mortgage payments, insurance, and taxes. 3) What types of updates are needed for a Buy-And-Hold Investment? Often, buy-and-hold investors put less time and effort into cosmetic upgrades in favor of getting the property market-ready and occupied as quickly as possible. Rentals in our area are in strong demand and rent for top dollar. 4) What should you consider when investing in a Short Term Rental? Short-term rental owners focus more on the location of the property along with the number of beds it will hold and the number of value-added amenities they can include. 5) How will you manage and maintain the property? For long-term and short-term rent-

als, you will need to consider whether you want to live the landlord lifestyle or turn the responsibility over to a property management company. For short-term rentals, you will also need to decide whether you will be taking on the task of cleaning and prepping the property yourself between guests, or hiring a cleaning service. 6) How will you find renters for your property? It is best to work with a professional Realtor, leasing Agent, or through a property management company to find well-qualified tenants who have been thoroughly screened and vetted before moving into your property. . 7) What limitations and requirements will you put on your renters? Will you allow pets? If so, will there be restrictions on the size or number? If the property is a Condominium what are the pet policies for tenants occupying the property? Will you require the tenant to maintain the lawn? Will you charge a co-pay for repairs? There are many things to consider before you rent out your property. Talk with your leasing agent or property manager about the policies procedures and restrictions and make sure that you thoroughly read the New Jersey Truth In Renting Act Booklet and that a full copy of it is provided to your tenant. 8) What will you provide as part of your rental property? Will you pay some or all of the utilities? Will you pay the HOA or Condo fee? Will you pay for the pool maintenance, lawn care, and pest control? Weigh the impact of paying some of the costs associated with property upkeep against the liabilities you will incur if the tenant does not properly maintain the home and grounds. 9) What is your long-term real estate investment goal? Do you want to consider adding to your property portfolio? Do you want to eventually consolidate your holdings into a multifamily duplex, triplex, quad, commercial property, or perhaps a multi-unit motel? Do you want to own properties exclusively in our local market or branch out into hot markets in other parts of the country? Consult with a real estate specialist. SHORE FUNNY Inflation is really getting out of hand… That’s just my 3 cents. I was at the dollar store and saw balloons labeled $1 a piece. I grabbed 3 and went to the cashier who told me the total was $5.28. I guess that’s the price of inflation Today, I got gas for $1.89. The Benefits of Preplanning Your Funeral, part 2 desires into consideration, but in reality, the funeral/memorial service is for the living. We hold services to memorialize and honor the life of the deceased, but we also do this to start the grieving process for the survivors. It is the surviving family members that need to go on, and not taking into account what your family may need or want can be a great disservice to them. On more than one occasion I can remember a family that wanted a service of some sort and their family member said to them before they died "I don't want anything, so don't do anything", "just cremate me or bury me or donate my body to science." Many people feel that they are disrespecting their parent/grandparent/sibling/etc if they make changes or go against their family members wishes. So, the survivors continue on with not having what they needed and have no proper closure. I find this to be a shame and so I encourage that you talk to your loved ones in advance. Find out if you are all in agreement and can satisfy everyone's needs and preferences regarding your final wishes. Stay tuned for my next column as we discuss further.

H

ow do we make things smoother for our loved ones when we die? The answer to that question is by preplanning your funeral. Now I know that this seems like a scary task but it will make life so much easier for your loved ones when the time comes. I will break it down into three main steps and I will go into detail with each of those steps. The first thing is really a two-step process, you need to think about what type of services you want, and you need to have a conversation with your family about what they feel they will need when you are gone. Now I know that some of you that are reading this might be surprised right now and maybe even a little confused. "What do you mean I need to ask my family what would they need or want in regards to my funeral service/memorial service/ final arrangements?" "Aren't these arrangements for me?" “I am going to do what I want, and they should do as I tell them and accept it." Well, it is true that your wishes are important and certainly your family should take your wants and

Wine Time. By Nikki Myers

C

ocktails are often thought of as sugary, juice-saturated things bound to give you a headache in the morning. This may be true of some (lookin’ at you, Daiquiris!) but there’s also a whole other world of options to explore. Passion Vines mixologist, Megan, created these two exclusive cocktails to prove the power of a savory beverage. Try them out next time you’re craving something a bit different! In case you’re wary of the ingredients, I’ll leave you with this: they were a hit with ALL 26 of our guests at the event where they were originally debuted!

Beet It

1 ½ oz Cynar Ricetta Originale Liqueur ● 2 oz. Beet Juice ● 1 Tbs Apple Cider Vinegar ● Club Soda Fill shaker with ice add in Cynar, Beet Juice, and Vinegar, shake pour over rocks glass with ice and top with club soda. If desired, depending on which brand of beet juice used, add simple syrup to taste. ●

Orange You Hot, Honey!

1 oz. Glenmorangie X Made For Mixing ● 1 oz. Dry Gin of your choice ● 1 ½ oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur ● 1 oz. Mike’s Hot Honey ● 1 oz. Blood Orange Juice Fill shaker with ice. Add all ingredients to shaker, then shake well. Pour and strain into rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with blood orange wheel and/or Luxardo cherry. ●

Nikki serves as Event Leader and Educator at Passion Vines Wine & Spirit Company, which has provided her countless resources on her wine journey. She estimates that she knows approximately .001% of all there is to know about wine (most notably, the fact that there is an infinite amount of things to know about wine). Most nights, she can be found sipping quirky dry reds from obscure regions.

“Our Changing Coastline” Presentation to be held March 18th Featuring New App

The Premier Window, Roofing & Siding Company In Atlantic & Cape May County

T

he Atlantic-Cape May Sustainable Jersey Regional Hub is planning a virtual Coastal Awareness presentation and explanation of the “MyCoast New Jersey” app on Friday, Mar. 18, 2022 at 12 noon. New Jersey Coastal waters are changing. Tides are getting higher and nuisance flooding is becoming more frequent. Coastal flooding just doesn’t affect barrier islands and coastal communities; it affects all tidal waterways, the rivers, streams and creeks that reach far inland. To have a better understanding of coastal storms and rising tides, and to show how ordinary citizens can contribute informative data on sea level rise, the Atlantic-Cape May Sustainable Jersey Hub has invited Vanessa Tropiano from the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve and Atlantic City Press meteorologist Joe Martucci to discuss the science behind coastal flooding and how to use the “MyCoast” app. The MyCoast: New Jersey app (https://mycoast.org/nj) records photos and data on areas that experience high tides and stormwater flooding. This app allows citizens to contribute photos and information to help scientists and city planners make better decisions through the data collected. During this presentation, Atlantic City Press Meteorologist Joe Martucci will discuss the Rutgers Report on Rising Seas and Coastal Storms in terms of its impacts on the Jersey Shore and will discuss the Community Rating System for flood insurance. Vanessa Tropiano, Coastal Training Program Coordinator with the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve will discuss the science behind coastal flooding and explain how the “MyCoast” app can be used as an effective tool to

document the changes in coastal flooding. Everyone is invited to view this presentation. The one-hour webinar will take place Friday, March 18th at 12 noon. Register for the webinar here: https://bit.ly/MyCoastMar18 There is no cost to register for this virtual event, and for those that cannot attend, the webinar will be recorded and posted on the ACM Hub site. https://atlanticcapemayregionalhub.wordpress.com/ Viewers will have the opportunity to ask questions at the end of the presentation. The MyCoast: New Jersey portal is used to collect and analyze photos of coastal events and places. Photos are linked to data about weather and tides to create reports that help stakeholders like government agencies, business owners, and residents to understand coastal change and make informed decisions. The MyCoast: New Jersey app is funded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the New Jersey Coastal Management Program, Department of Environmental Protection in partnership with the Jacques Cousteau National Estuarine Research Reserve. Steve Jasiecki, with the Margate City Green Team, organized this Mar. 18th webinar The Atlantic-Cape May County Regional Hub is a coalition of 35 Green Teams in Atlantic and Cape May County formed to share information and resources in order to support collective efforts to help local communities become more sustainable. In addition the Hub website, regular updates are shared on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AtlanticCapeMayHub
