Atlantic County Utilities Commission has made an important switch 20 years ago to reduce their carbon footprint and help stop climate change in its tracks. They boast a huge wind farm, a large scale solar array, a means to transition emissions from burning garbage and transform it into electricity, a reduced diesel truck fleet, and of course, a huge recycling plant.

Dovey advocates for the people of Atlantic County to do their part in fighting climate change. He asks that consumers reduce plastic purchased and used once. “One easy way is to

simply stop littering,” said Dovey. “Garbage enters the oceans when someone drops waste and it enters the Great Egg Harbor or Mullica rivers. It doesn’t get there by accident.”

Dovey also suggests upgrading appliances to more eco-friendly options and as electric cars enter the market, consider purchasing a cheaper model.

Adding solar panels to your home can help you save money on your electric bill.

“Most of us live by the coast because it’s beautiful,” said Dovey. “We enjoy water activities, like surfing and fishing, so we should preserve it. The process may be expensive but it is necessary. We need to work together with municipalities and businesses to solve this problem and protect our home.”

Has Winter Rounded the Corner?

W

e've made it past Presidents Day, and are in the home stretch of the winter season.

According to the calendar this year, spring begins just before noon on Sunday, March 20th. Of course, the notoriously fickle month of March can bring anything from blinding blizzards to scorching summer-like heat and anything in between. So we dare not cover up the snow blowers or put away those snow boots just yet. That's especially true considering that signs point to a few potential opportunities for cold and maybe a little snow in early March this year.

But by late February, it's a tradition of mine to do a "post-mortem" of sorts on the winter that was, or still is, depending on the given year. Here's a quick recap for 2021-22 so far:

December 2021: We enjoyed the 3rd warmest December on record, with no signs of what was to come just one month later. Only seven days did not make it to at least 50 degrees the entire month, and we sweated to 60-something-degree high temperatures on five different occasions, including Christmas Day. It was also the third driest December on record, with hardly any rain, and certainly no measurable snow.

Those that aren't fans of the flakes were smiling at month's end.

January 2022: But those smiles turned to frowns just three days into January and the new year, as over a foot of snow fell during one of our "South Jersey Special" snow storms, where we saw the jackpot and normally snowy areas farther inland saw nothing. Then came some frequent cold temperatures that lasted much of the month, with just about half of January days seeing highs not make it out of the 30s. The month overall was four degrees colder than average, although not cold enough to crack the Top 20 coldest January list.

The highlight of the month, and of the winter so far, came with the blizzard on January 28-29th, with 12 to 20 inches of snow falling throughout the area.

And snow lovers rejoiced.

February 2022: The normally snow-

iest month of the winter arrived…and brought no snow. Well, almost no snow, with one-tenth of one inch, or barely a dusting, the day before Valentine's Day. While December was incredibly warm and January was consistently cold, February should end up closer to average temperature-wise by the time the month wraps up.

Reflecting on the current winter, it brings to mind the topic of those long range winter forecasts. You know, the ones that come out in October and November and try to predict, an exercise in futility if you ask me, what type of winter we're going to have. If you've read my columns before, you know I am hardly a fan of these seasonal predictions, a point I stress at the start of every winter. But let's hypothetically say there was a long-range forecast that "nailed" this year's big picture of well above average snowfall. Was that a useful prediction to the average person? For me, when I hear well above average snow, I think of a long, hard winter, one with multiple storms, and snow on the ground for extended periods, at least by South Jersey standards.

In the case of this winter, we had two blockbuster storms, and the snow melted fairly quickly. Take away those two storms, and you're left with a warm, snowless December, and a seasonable and snowless February. Sure, it will go down as a very snowy winter, with twice our average snow so far. But it's a winter that was condensed into a few weeks of cold and a few days of snow. Of course, that's pending what type of punctuation mark that March 2022 wants to put on this winter.

To this meteorologist, this winter provides two primary lessons or talking points. First, the forecast for our major

winter storms, from several days out and through the event itself, was quite good with a high degree of accuracy.

That's impressive, as the weather patterns in both cases were complex and the uncertainty and the room for error were large. The forecasts for these storms kept people well prepared and informed and likely saved lives.

Second, meteorology is still an inexact and evolving science, and longrange forecasting still has a long way to go to even come close to the more dependable short-term forecasts.

Just about every winter forecast I saw called for a fast start to winter, a cold and possibly snowy December, and a higher than average chance for a white Christmas in 2021. I even bought into that idea for December, but to no avail.

It was warm, impressively so, and entirely snow-less.

I promise that this is the last time I'll mention the winter forecast, at least until later next fall. But I can't promise we are entirely done with winter weather just yet. After all, from St. Patrick's Day to the first day of spring over the last decade, March can and has brought some wintry meteorological madness on occasion.

Meteorologist Dan Skeldon has a degree in meteorology from Cornell University. He has forecasted the weather in South Jersey for the last 18 years, first on the former television station NBC40 and then on Longport Media radio. Dan has earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for Broadcast Meteorologists, and now does television broadcasts on WFMZTV in Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley.

Funny Farm Owner Publishes Book Makes USA Today's "Top 5 Books Not to Miss"

unny Farm Animal and Rescue Sanctuary in Mays Landing has become a local favorite for South Jersey residents. The family-friendly farm, owned and operated by Laurie Zaleski, offers a happy, safe, and protected home to over 600 abused and abandoned animals. Zaleski, an inspiration and icon to all who know her, recently published her first book. Released on February 22nd, “Funny Farm: My Unexpected Life with 600 Rescue Animals,” has already found its way to USA Today’s “Top 5 Books Not to Miss” list.

or 35+ years, The Press of Atlantic City’s business and advertising departments were the sole occupants of a three-story iconic building on Washington Avenue in Plesantville. The building was recently sold to The Ideal Institute of Technology.

Ren Parikh, Director of The Ideal Institute of Technology, said he saw an opportunity to expand the campus and place its administrative staff and its program offerings under one roof.

“Acquiring the 45,000 square feet building is a milestone for Ideal Institute,” Parikh said. “I see endless possibilities for students to learn new skills, acquire industry-valued certifications and find sustainable employment. My hope is to eventually offer a consortium of trade schools under one roof to meet the needs of the local business community.”

How to Keep Your Kids Active in the Final Weeks of Winter Moms Vibe:

inter is almost behind us!

Cabin fever has officially set in, the excitement of the holidays is well behind us, and kids are itching to stay busy. With a few weeks left of colder weather, we all seem to be getting a little restless. It’s only a matter of time before they’re back on their bikes and outside with friends, but until then, here are a few outlets for their boundless energy.

Visit the public library.

Local libraries are a free, convenient, and fun activity for the kids. Many libraries offer free crafts and hands-on activities for family members of all ages. While many things are still virtual due to Covid-19, there are to-go crafts available at many locations and online activities to keep young minds busy. The Ocean City library offers Tinker Tuesdays, an online creative building activity for children aged 5-10.

Many of the local branches offer storytime for various age groups, crafting sessions,

and age-appropriate book clubs. Visit AtlanticLibrary.org to check out what your local branch has to offer this month.

Make a summer bucket list.

Summer is right around the corner.

Next time you find yourself stuck in the house, pull out the crafts and work together to create a list of things you’d like to do together as a family this summer.

Spend time brainstorming together then allow the kids to create a wall-worthy bucket list to hang up. Ideas can include building a giant sandcastle, taking a road trip, trying a new pool or beach, visiting every beach on the Jersey shore, having a water balloon fight, riding an entire bike path, attending a baseball game, learning a new language, and so much more. Have fun with it!

Jump or skate South Jersey has so many indoor activities for the kids. Get Air in Mays Landing is a no-brainer for kids with an abundance of energy. Check out their website for toddler time, special offers, and coupons. For older kids, bring out the ice skates and visit Skate Zone in Atlantic City. They offer open skating sessions

for the public as well as skate lessons and ice hockey leagues. Young’s Skating Center in Mays Landing has been a South Jersey classic since the 1970s. The iconic skating center offers open skate, parties, and classes.

Make a “bored bucket.”

A bored bucket is a perfect rainy day activity. Grab a small cup and a ton of popsicle sticks. On each popsicle stick, have your child come up with something they can do when they feel bored. When the time comes, encourage them to reach into the bucket, pull out an idea, and have a little fun. Ideas include dancing, karaoke, playing with playdoh, playing a board game, practicing piano, starting a new book, creating a new challenge, having a dog tea party, and so on. Come up with simple ideas that have boredom-busting power.

Visit an arcade We tend to think of arcades as summertime boardwalk activities, but many local arcades are open year-round. Arcades are a great way to keep their bodies and minds busy on a cold day. Check out The Lucky Snake in Showboat, Starcade in

the Hamilton Mall, or any of the boardwalk arcades.

Bundle up for the outdoors For those willing to brave the chilly weather, beachcombing is a rewarding and potentially profitable winter beach activity. Rent or buy a metal detector and hit the beach to discover the treasures left behind last summer. You never know what you’ll find!

Not quite ready for the ocean breeze?

Lace-up and hit the trails. Estell Manor Park in Mays Landing and the Nature Reserve in Egg Harbor Towship are easily walkable hiking trails for the whole family.

We’re almost there, Shore Local Moms! Soon we will be sitting in our beach chairs with toes in the sand, exhausting our little ones in the summer sun. For now, hang in there and try to get creative with the winter weeks we have left. The light at the end of the tunnel is shining bright!

utside of Greenwich in Cumberland County, NJ is one of the oldest African-American settlements on the eastern seaboard.

Springtown came about after the Manumission Act of 1786 when Quakers sold small tracts of land to free blacks who then would settle into Philadelphia’s suburbs, or as far north as Canada. In the 1800 Census, there were approximately eighty free people of African descent in Greenwich Township, as well as an equal number of enslaved people. New Jersey’s Gradual Abolition of Slavery Act was passed in 1804. However, the last enslaved person in Greenwich wouldn’t be released until 25 years later in 1829.

One of the people who utilized New Jersey’s Underground Railroad was Harriet Tubman. Harriet Tubman, born “Araminta Ross” in March 1822, took her mother’s first name and her first husband’s last name when she reached adulthood. Tubman was a strong-willed and courageous young woman born into slavery on a Maryland plantation. When she was a child, an overseer threw a weight that struck her in the head. The resulting injury left her with severe headaches, seizures and narcolepsy for the rest of her life. Disabled and only five feet tall, she was easy to underestimate.

Upon hearing that she would be sold to another plantation in 1849, she planned a daring escape into the Northern free states. With seven escape routes into New Jersey, points of entry from the South included Cape May, Greenwich and Springtown. Tubman planned to escape with her brothers, but they turned back due to fear of getting caught. As a result, Tubman made her first journey to freedom alone.

A year later, Tubman returned to free her sister and her sister's two

children from Dorchester County, MD. Traveling along the western route, they walked at night, hid during the day, foraged for food and slept outside on the ground without so much as a blanket.

After approximately ninety miles, they crossed the Delaware Bay from the Eastern Shores into Quaker-occupied We s t Jersey. With the aid of Lenni Lenape scouts, she and her fellow fugitives followed the network of safe houses through South Jersey’s pine forests to the city of Philadelphia.

She accomplished this feat using her knowledge of plants and herbs, navigating the intercoastal waterways and by the guidance system of the stars.

After her first success of guiding others to freedom, she began planning and executing missions to Maryland to free more slaves. In the summer months, Tubman found work as a domestic servant and cook in Cape May’s grand hotels. Her earnings enabled her to support the expense of future crossings. During these daring crossings, she carried a pistol and reportedly told those tempted to turn back to “Live free or die.”

In her later years, Tubman participated in other antislavery efforts. She supported John Brown in his failed 1859 raid on the Harpers Ferry, Virginia arsenal. During the Civil War, she learned the towns and transportation

routes of the Confederate army — information that made her a vital ally to Union military commanders. Tubman served as a spy and armed scout for the Union army, learning from the enslaved population about Confederate troop placements and supply lines.

She also led the Combahee River Raid, which led to the freedom of 700 slaves in South Carolina and was the first woman-led raid in the United States.

At the war’s end, Tubman resided in Auburn, New York. She raised funds to aid freedmen and joined Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony in their quest for women’s suffrage. Tubman also cared for her aging parents. She married Union soldier Nelson Davis, who was also born into slavery. Tubman was more than twenty years his senior. They adopted a daughter together in 1874.

After an extensive campaign for a military pension, Tubman was initially only awarded $8 per month in 1895 as Davis’s widow, who died in 1888. She was finally granted $20 per month in 1899 for her service.

Since the military denied her so long the pension she earned, Tubman worked with writer Sarah Bradford on a biography to generate income. In 1896, she opened the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged and cared for the elderly in her community. Harriet Tubman died in 1913 and was buried with military honors at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York.

A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

A

tlantic City, “The World’s Famous Playground” as it was known holds great memories for me growing up. We have seen photos of the Atlantic City boardwalk of the 30’s and 40’s packed with people decked out in their finest clothing, but my years were more in the 50’s and 60’s. My parents would dress my brother and I up in monogrammed blazers sewn by my grandfather, a tailor in London.

Our outfits would be topped off with brimmed hats. My father wore a long overcoat also sewn by my grandfather (which I still have) and his brimmed hat. My mother wore an outfit that she made herself also topped off with a tasteful hat. We walked the boards, went on rides, and fed the pigeons with peanuts purchased at Planters Peanuts. In the summers, my father would take me up to Captain Starns and we would go on a half day fishing trip. Whether we caught fish or not,

it was always exciting to see Atlantic City slip over the horizon and be out of sight of any land. Sometimes our family would take a sightseeing boat out of Captain Starns or ride the Miss Atlantic City speedboat just off the coast. As I got older, my friends and I would hop a jitney for ten cents and ride up to Atlantic City with just a few dollars in our pockets. Sometimes we would catch a movie at the Embassy or Beach theaters sitting in the balcony if available and occasionally pitched a few kernels of popcorn over the railing. With the Central Pier, Million Dollar Pier and Steeplechase Pier, there was never a shortage of things to do. Sometimes we would just spend a day at the Steel Pier beginning with the General Motors exhibit where the latest cars were on display and open to sit inside. I always gravitated to the high-performance cars with the “4 on the floor” stick shifts. After stomping the clutch and ripping through the gears numerous times, I often wondered if transmissions had to be

replaced after the exhibits were over.

On the pier were numerous exhibits, movies, games and water shows including high divers, the world famous diving horse and the diving bell which was a favorite. We never saw anything except murky water but the rapid rise to the surface was the attraction for us. We always had a full day in Atlantic City often finishing it off with a Taylor Pork Roll sandwich. Of course, with no cell phones and even with pay phones, there was never the need to call home and assure our parents that we were okay aside from the mischief we would often got into. Like the time in our mid-teens that our parents were summoned to the St. Charles Hotel at 1 a.m. in the morning. Some girls waved to us from their rooms and

that was all it took for the group of us to run past the front desk ignore the yelling from the manager and take to the stairs with him in close pursuit. He caught the one closest to him and our friend screamed like he had his foot caught in a snare which propelled us even further up the staircase. He folded like a cheap suit, gave up our names and parents’ phone numbers who were waiting for us in the lobby. I didn’t see my friends for a week. Atlantic City has changed and it is my hope that young people can still go uptown, walk the boardwalk, go on the piers and make memories of their own in the World’s Greatest Playground.

OC Lifeguard Tom Oves 1934-2022 A Look Back

om Oves, an Ocean City Beach Patrol legend, died on February 12, 2022 at the age of 87. He joined the patrol in 1951, and was made a lieutenant in 1960. He retired in September 1964 In 1951, Tom quickly established himself as the fastest rowers on the beach patrol winning the singles rowing race and placing second in the doubles row. The following year he won both events and the South Jersey double rowing championship.

His partner was Jerry Angulo.

Tom spent 1957 and 1958 in the United States Army as a second lieutenant. He returned to the beach patrol in 1959 and won the doubles rowing race with Charlie Bowman.

Captain Thomas Williams made Tom a lieutenant in 1960 a position that allowed him to teach lifesaving skills to the younger lifeguards.

Tom started a decades long winning streak in the South Jersey championship in 1961 when he, Charlie Bowman and Dick Thieler won the championship. The following year Ocean City won their second straight South Jersey championship thanks to Tom, Ed Field and Dick Thieler.

The OCBP won every South Jersey championship from 1961 to 1971.

“Guards Named to Hall of Fame” was the headline in the September 1, 1975, The Press of Atlantic City. The article began, “Three former Ocean City lifeguards have become the first persons in the newly formed Lifeguards Hall of Fame. Inducted were T. John Carey, Thomas Oves and Dick Thieler. A plaque commemorating the induction was presented to the trio by lifeguard Capt. George Lafferty.”

There were many comments on social media as the news of Tom’s death spread. Joe Grimes, Hall of Fame lifeguard, was one of the best: “Few cast a larger beach patrol sand print than Tom Oves. The stuff of legends but always humble and supportive. Tom leaves quite a remarkable and lasting legacy.”

Fat Cats and Overweight Dogs a Health Risk

besity in pets is a rising problem. Here’s how to make sure your animal companion doesn’t become another statistic.

We all love to reward our pets with treats. But are you overdoing it? Just as humans are battling with their weight, studies show more pets than ever fall into the “overweight” or “obese” categories. In fact, obesity is the most common nutritional disorder in dogs and cats, and the stats are alarming: 52.5% of dogs and 58.3% of cats were rated as overweight or obese by veterinarians.

How do you know if your dog or cat is obese? You might not think so, but dogs and cats are obese when their weight is more than 30% above ideal. For example, if your pet’s ideal weight is 10 lbs and she weighs at

least 13 lbs (30% of 10 is 3), she is not only overweight but obese.

Unfortunately, according to veterinarians, there is a 45% chance that you don’t know that your obese pet is, indeed, FAT. We often have blinders on when it comes to how our pets look. So it’s important to take an objective look at your animal companion, and take charge of his or her weight.

Just as obesity is bad for us, it is bad for our pets too.

Excessive fat has physical effects on the canine and feline body: excessive weight bearing on joints can cause painful chronic joint disease; upper airway constriction (obese pets with flat faces such as Pugs and Persian cats can have greater difficulty breathing); inability to groom the hindquarters; and increased insulation causing reduced heat loss.

Fat cats are also prone to developing fatty liver disease (hepatic lipido-

sis), which is a serious and sometimes fatal disease.

Also keep in mind that obese animals are at greater risk of life -threatening complications under anesthesia and are also at greater risk of developing diabetes. Diabetes is a very serious lifetime disease and many diabetic dogs will become blinded by cataracts within nine months of becoming diabetic.

ty Excessive fat may also cause abnormal hormonal function of fat deposits. It is not widely known that fat is actually an endocrine organ and secretes adipokines (protein modulators). Adipokines regulate immune function, energy homeostasis, vascular development (angiogenesis), lipid and glucose metabolism, and hemostasis. As fat deposits grow to abnormally high amounts, fat secretes pro-inflammatory adipokines.

So obesity can be considered a state of chronic inflammation of the body, which is a serious health concern (and yes, it happens in obese humans too).

All the more reason to take action against obesity! If you’re not sure about your pet’s weight status, ask your veterinarian.

Recreating the Taste of Childhood: Five Recipes From Long Ago, All Grown Up

in upstate Pennsylvania, serving them warm to my Grandma and her four younger siblings. I’m sure you have your own heartwarming recipes and traditions, but if you are looking for something comforting, here are five recipes that will make you smile and think of childhood:

One way to pass along traditions and feel warm and fuzzy is to spruce up your mom’s old recipes. Every Christmas season, my Grandma comes over to bake cookies. She grips her mother’s recipe for oatmeal raisin cookies tight and proudly reads aloud the instructions, squinting to interpret my Nana’s cursive. We bake the cookies and taste them, and while oatmeal raisin cookies can’t beat chocolate chip ones in taste, we love envisioning my Nana hunched over her little oven

Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup

Ingredients: ● Rye bread, sliced ● Gruyere cheese, shredded ● Sharp cheddar, shredded ● 3 tbsp of mayonnaise ● 1 can of tomato puree, 28 ounces ● 3 cloves of garlic, crushed ● 1 large yellow onion, diced ● 4 cups of chicken or vegetable stock ● 1 cup of heavy cream ● 1 tsp of olive oil ● 2 tbsp of salt ● 1 tsp of pepper ● 1 tsp of garlic powder ● 1 tsp of red pepper flakes ● 2 tsp of rosemary ● 2 tsp of basil, freshly chopped In a large soup pot, warm up oil

Pancakes Bananas Foster

Ingredients: 2 cups of pancake mix ● 2 large eggs ● 1 cup of whole milk ● 1 cup of canola oil ● 4 bananas, sliced ● 1/3 cup of rum ● 1/2 cup of pecans ● 3 tbsp of brown sugar ● 2 tbsp of butter ● 1 tsp of salt ● Whipped cream ● Maple syrup Whisk together pancake mix, eggs, milk, and oil. Heat 1 tsp of butter over medium heat in a saute pan and ladle batter into the pan. Flip pancakes as they bubble at the edges, cooking for 1-2 minutes on each side.

After the pancakes are done, melt butter in the pan and add bananas, pecans, salt, brown sugar, and rum (be careful of flames). Let cook over medium heat until the bananas are soft and pecans are fragrant. ●

Pour tomatoes into the pot and stir. Add chicken stock and spices, and let simmer for 30 minutes.

Once the soup has thickened, add heavy cream and stir. Ladle into bowls and top with chopped basil.

Spread mayonnaise onto slices of bread. In a frying pan over medium heat, place a slice of bread, shredded cheese (equal parts cheddar and gruyere), and top with the second slice of bread.

After 2-3 minutes, flip the sandwich so that the bread is crispy and golden. Let cook for another minute until the cheese has melted.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Place chicken thighs on a sheet pan and salt generously. Bake for 45 minutes then let cool. Once cooled, use two forks to shred chicken and place to the side.

In a large soup bowl, add a tab of butter and let it over medium heat.

Dump in onion, garlic, celery, and carrots. Let soften for 10 minutes.

Add fish sauce, soy sauce, lemon juice, bay leaves, red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, rosemary, and oregano.

Pour in chicken stock and let simmer for one hour.

Stir in shredded chicken and ladle into bowls. Garnish with chopped parsley and enjoy on a blustery day!

Pour batter into a nonstick baking pan and bake for 30 minutes until the brownies are soft and firm.

Peanut butter and Jelly Sandwich

Ingredients: ● 2 slices of bread of choice, preferably potato or brioche ● Peanut butter of choice ● 1 cup of raspberries ● 1 cup of white sugar ● ¼ cup of orange zest

1 tbsp of lemon juice 1 tbsp of cornstarch In a small saucepan, cook raspberries, sugar, orange zest, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Muddle raspberries until the mixture becomes thick and jammy, 4-5 minutes.

Toast the bread for 2-3 minutes.

Spread peanut butter and jelly thick and top with the second slice of bread. Enjoy!

Absecon Island Artist Makes Sea Glass Jewelry for the Greater Good

A

tlantic City Native Lyntaga Smith combines her love of the beach with her crafting skills and shares her passion through her organization AC Kids Who Beachcomb. The talented artist creates sea glass jewelry and sells her work at local craft fairs at the Absecon Lighthouse and beyond.

Ninety-five percent of the sea glass Smith uses for her crafts is found on Atlantic City beaches. Her adoration for the medium came to be when Smith met a beachcomber named Bob at a pottery class through the Ventnor Arts and Cultural Center.

The two quickly became friends, and after showing her his kitchen backsplash made from seaglass, Smith

Beachcombing in Atlantic City was hooked. He taught her how to search for the glass and today, she can be found digging in the sand searching for the treasure. “I gravitate toward the sea glass,” said Smith.

“It calls to me.”

“I often think about my childhood growing up in Atlantic City,” said Smith. “I wonder if I had learned to beachcomb, I could have coped with challenges better.” The beachcomber decided to apply her love of seaglass and help Atlantic City teens learn to be mindful and learn about beach habitats. Smith is also a certified yoga teacher, so she ensures that her kiddos are practicing meditation and doing yoga themselves.

s we head out of February (hard to believe) and headstrong into March, if we are honest, many of the goals and New Year's resolutions we set at the beginning of the year are already abandoned. We’ve moved on. I’m not trying to give myself a pass but having just come off of a serious Covid bout and still recovering, for me the first several weeks of 2022 were anything but productive when it came to chasing goals. If the truth is told, as I slowly return to a “normal” life, I’m just getting started on the year from a goal/plan of attack mission.

One thing my downtime in the hospital and recovery has afforded me is the time to read more often. As I’ve looked into what I want to accomplish in 2022, I’ve discovered some aspects of goal setting and achieving that I think might help you as well.

In his book Atomic Habits, James Clear talks about goals. More importantly, he addresses the role that habits play in achieving goals. He says that setting goals are good, but developing good and productive habits is what leads to seeing our goals accomplished. The premise is that without positive habit change and development, any goals we achieve will only be temporary if we achieve them at all.

If you’re like me, throughout your life you’ve developed bad habits that constantly become roadblocks to achieving what you want in any given area. Here is the good news. The bad habits can be addressed, destroyed and good habits developed to replace them.

Like a tiny atom, tiny habits over time can affect major changes in your life. You and I don’t have to become overwhelmed to the point of discouragement. Tackling tiny changes (over time) will lead to major changes. It makes sense if you stop and think about it. The habits that make up our day to a large extent determine where our day takes us. From our morning routine to our health-related habits, eating habits, discipline, financial habits, how we address our relationships, they all make up who we are. If we find ourselves setting goals that go against the habits that determine how we live out our day, we won’t reach our goals.

Meet the NJ Dream Builders

ike Waters, owner of NJ Dream Builders, is creating opportunity and hope for those who have experienced their personal rock bottom. The local construction company, founded in 2018, offers employment and trade skills to those in addiction recovery. Waters struggled with addiction for several years as a young adult, only to gain momentum under the pressures of going to college. Ultimately hitting his own rock bottom following an overdose, Waters sought the treatment that would turn his life around. Beginning his recovery journey at Enlightened Solutions followed by a stay at The Serenity House, Waters got back on his feet and made a conscious decision to change the rest of his story.

He understood that he had the power to recreate the narrative.

As a trained chef, he went back into the restaurant industry only to realize a few months in that the chaotic lifestyle of a busy kitchen

was no longer serving him during his recovery. Without a specific plan in place, Waters leaned on his faith that his future was bright. He had a new lease on life and was open to what would lie ahead.

A chance opportunity led him into the world of construction.

Through a two-year apprenticeship, he learned everything there was to know about construction and eventually made the decision to go into business for himself.

One job led to the next and Waters began building a construction portfolio that he could be proud of. Through word of mouth and a reputation that people were talking about, NJ Dream Builders began to take form. The team began to grow as Waters provided opportunities for others in recovery to find purpose and fulfillment through construction. Currently, the NJ Dream Builders team focuses on kitchens, bathrooms, remodels, and decking.

Waters looks forward to expanding further, with his eyes set on building developments in the near future.

omatoes are high in potassium, vitamin E, vitamin B and other nutrients. They carry a substance called lycopene. This is what gives them their red color and protects them from the ultraviolet relays of the sun. The high amounts of potassium and vitamin B make them effective in reducing cholesterol levels and lowering blood pressure. Studies have shown that incorporating more tomatoes into your diet may also boost your immune system and prevent blood clots.

Tomatoes are filled with antioxidants, which reduce the amount of cell-damaging free radicals in the body. Antioxidants also help skin retain moisture, which prevents fine lines and wrinkles.

However, too much of anything can also be a problem. Tomatoes are categorized as a “nightshade” fruit. Eating too many tomatoes can worsen arthritis and muscle pain.

Despite this, I believe the positive benefits of eating tomatoes outweigh the negatives. Try to enjoy about one large tomato or six cherry tomatoes each day.

Paradise Soup (Zuppa Paradiso)

A

lthough we now can put the very cold snowy and gloomy January days behind us, we will still have some cold and chilly days ahead as we move through the rest of February and March. And there is nothing better on a chilly day than a good bowl of hot soup.

I love all soups and I love them year-round. But there is something about a steaming bowl of hot soup on a cold day that makes me (and I hope you) feel warm and cozy inside.

Soup is definitely one of the most popular comfort foods, and researchers have conducted many studies that show that people have happier feelings about others after consuming a bowl of hot soup. One study showed that even holding a warm cup of soup

may increase positive feelings toward others.

It's said that soup is as old as cooking itself, and no one really knows when or who invented it.

However, there are signs that even cavemen knew how to boil water (once they could control fire) because residue has been found sticking to pots found from the Iron and Bronze Ages – that’s over 20,000 years ago.

But before soup was boiled in pots it was probably cooked in watertight containers like animal hides and woven baskets, and hot rocks were used to boil the water.

Here’s an interesting fact: the word restaurant, which means something restorative, was first used in France in the 16th century to refer to a highly concentrated, inexpensive soup which was sold by street vendors. Then in the mid-1700s, a shop opened in Paris specializing in such soups, which prompted the use of the modern word restaurant for eating establishments.

There are many wonderful Italian soups, and the most familiar in America are probably Minestrone and Italian Wedding Soups. By the way, the latter does not relate in any

way to actual weddings, but to the “marriage” of flavors – but that’s for another article!

I grew up eating a delicious Italian soup that my mother called Panada (from “pane” meaning bread). But throughout Italy it’s known as Zuppa Paradiso, or Paradise Soup.

Paradise Soup is a very simple soup made with eggs, Parmesan cheese, breadcrumbs and stock. It also is known as “Poor Man’s Soup”

because it uses no meat, and the farmer could gather the eggs from his chickens, make the stock from chicken bones, and turn stale bread into breadcrumbs. And I guess they also could make the cheese!

Dating back to the 19th century, some believe its name came from the fact that no one believed that any “meatballs” made from just eggs, cheese and breadcrumbs could taste so heavenly.

There are very few recipes for Paradise Soup available, but I do have one on my website: www.joestablefortwo.com. There are over 600 authentic Italian recipes on my site, and this recipe, which comes from the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, is listed in the soups section. I’ve included it with this article.

It’s very important to use soft breadcrumbs made from slightly stale bread you have on hand. Dry breadcrumbs out of the round container purchased at the grocery store won’t work.

I found three other recipes online that are very similar to my recipe. The only difference that some recipes separate the egg yolks from the egg whites, and then beat the whites until stiff before adding to breadcrumb mixture. That method makes for a fluffier “meatball.”

Whichever method you try, I know you will find this soup to be heavenly.

4 large eggs Salt and pepper to taste Freshly grated nutmeg 10 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese plus additional for finishing at the end 5 tablespoons slightly stale, soft breadcrumbs (not dried)* 7-1/2 to 10 cups of chicken or beef stock or broth

Beat the eggs with salt, pepper and nutmeg; add the Parmesan cheese to the breadcrumb mixture and mix well.

In a large pot bring the stock to a boil; reduce heat to simmer. Carefully add the breadcrumb mixture, a tablespoon at a time, to the liquid, stirring constantly. Cook gently for 3 to 4 minutes; turn off the heat and let rest for about 2 minutes.

Serve hot sprinkled with additional Parmesan cheese.

Serves 6 to 8. *Make your own breadcrumbs by drying out stale bread on your counter, then pulsing into crumbs in your food processor or blender.

thought the above headline fits best for this column as the Sixers are both the “talk of the town” right now as well as the one Philly team that is trending upward these days.

My radio colleague Billy Schweim called the Sixers “the SAVIOR of Philadelphia sports," and it’d be hard to argue with him, right?

Since I last wrote, the Sixers finally traded Ben Simmons and they ended up with one of the NBA’s 75th greatest players in return, James Harden. But did they give up too much? The Flyers are in another tailspin and the biggest question around them right now is where their captain might be traded. The Super Bowl was a good one (I thought), and now the talk turns to who the Eagles might draft and their strategy moving forward.

Meanwhile, their former coach officially gets into Canton. The Phillies normally would’ve been “knee-deep” in spring training, but baseball’s labor dispute continues. On the local front, it’s time

As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I simply MUST start with the Sixers as right before the NBA trade deadline, they finally pulled the trigger on a trade with Brooklyn that essentially sent Ben Simmons to the Nets and got back James Harden in return.

The Sixers were also forced to give up Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, and two future first-round picks (with considerations), but they also got back Paul Millsap. In the immediate aftermath of the trade, it was funny to see some folks who were concerned that the Sixers gave up “too much”. To me, it boils down to this, you replaced a guy who didn’t want to be here or play here for one of the NBA’s 75th greatest players of ALL-TIME. Boom.

Done. ‘Nuff said.

Well, maybe I’ll write a LITTLE more as Joel Embiid is having an MVP season this year, and now that he’s paired with “The Beard”, folks are all eager to see how that works out. Harden is rehabbing a hamstring injury still as I write this, but should make his Sixers debut soon. To me, he’s already paying dividends, as in a big win at Milwaukee right before the all-star break, Harden was in street clothes, on the bench, supporting his teammates.

Allow me to expand on that a little, as it was Harden who got in Tyrese Maxey’s ear and encouraged him to be “more aggressive”. Maxey went out and dominated the 2nd quarter of what turned into a 123-120 Sixers win over the defending NBA champs.

Maybe that’s what I’m most excited about. The Sixers got rid of Simmons, acquired James Harden, and didn’t have to give up either Maxey or Matisse Thybulle. Um, Daryl Morey for NBA Executive of the Year…?

One more Sixer note as I happened to look up and see Julius Erving, Billy Cunningham & Charles Barkley on the TNT coverage of the NBA All-Star Game from Cleveland. As I research and write this, I’m surprised (and pleased) to learn that the Sixers tied the Knicks with the most players named to the 75th-anniversary team.

I already mentioned, Dr. J, The Kangaroo Kid & The Chuckster. Allen Iverson was also there, and James Harden who did not play. That’s five. And the list gets more impressive. Hall of Famers Wilt Chamberlain, Hall Greer, Moses Malone, and Dolph Schayes was also on the team.

Think about that for a moment. If you said to someone “which NBA team has the most players on the 75th Anniversary Team?” you’d figure that they would mention Boston or the Lakers.

But the answer is two-fold as the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers hold the record at NINE players each.

A cool trivia question!

To hockey now, whereas I write this, the Flyers are fresh off another loss.

Their 18th loss in the last 20 games.

This comes as they are in the middle of a club-record eight-game homestand. I’ve been to the Wells Fargo Center recently and I’m am both saddened and a little shocked at how LOW the attendance is. I saw them play Detroit on February 9th and I’d put the crowd at no more than 6,000 on a Wednesday night. I’m headed up to see them play the Blues tonight (February 22), and am curious to see how many others will be there.

The biggest story around the Flyers is what’s going to happen with team captain Claude Giroux. He shined at the NHL All-Star Game, winning MVP honors as the Metro won the event.

Now, with the NHL trade deadline less than a month away, speculation increases as to where “G” will go next.

It’s all but certain that he is going to waive his “no-trade” clause to go play for a contender and have a chance to win a Stanley Cup. The Flyers, meanwhile, hope to move him while they can still get an asset in return.

A report came out recently that Giroux had told his agents to tell the Flyers that he’d be willing to waive that “no trade” clause to end up in Colorado, Minnesota, or St. Louis. Of course, it’s not that easy. My radio colleague Kevin Durso from 97.3 ESPN thinks that the Flyers won’t do anything until Giroux plays his 1,000th career game with Philadelphia. If everything stays status quo, Giroux would play that 1,000th career game at home against Nashville on St. Patty’s Day on March 17th. He could get the accolades and

then move on to try and win a Cup with someone else.

In football, I enjoyed Super Bowl LVI as the Rams just edged out the Bengals 23-20 at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.

I have to admit, I was pulling for Cincy, but it was a good game that went down to the wire, so I’m not sure you can ask for much more!

A quick note though, did you happen to see the Rams and their Super Bowl “parade” in Los Angeles? Just another reason I love Philly sports, as I heard that organizers were begging folks to please come out and line the short parade route in the City of Angels.

Now, to be fair, if that was the Lakers or Dodgers, I think the crowd would’ve been bigger, but still.

For the Eagles, the focus (and sports radio talk) now turns to what they will do with their three first-round draft picks. The new NFL league year begins on March 16th, so don’t expect anything to happen before then. But we sure can have discussions and debate about it, can’t we?

One final football note as I have to say a HUGE congratulations to former Eagles coach Dick Vermeil, who was officially elected to the NFL Hall of Fame on Super Bowl weekend. The 85-year-old still lives in suburban Philadelphia but was born & raised a California boy, so that had to be special for him to be a newly minted Hall of Fame coach while enjoying the Rams win. I’ve met Coach Vermeil a few times and what they say is true.

That leaves me with the Phillies as normally by now, pitchers & catchers would all be in Clearwater. A gigantic roster would start to be whittled down to a big-league team. None of that is happening because of the Major League Baseball labor dispute.

First, MLB announced that all spring training activities have been pushed back to at least March 5th. That may get pushed back again. Then, after five hours in a boardroom in Jupiter, Florida on Monday, February 21st, the two sides came out seemingly just as far apart as when they went in.

Keep in mind that Opening Day is scheduled for March 31st, so this is a critical week for negotiations between the two sides. What are they fighting about? Well, to put it simply, the two things most people fight about….money & control. The players want more money pre-arbitration, the league wants more control over the control of how many minor league baseball jobs there are. There are a bunch of other issues too, but those are the top two right now.

I’ll just say this. The NFL is as popular as ever. The NBA continues to be strong both domestically and internationally. I don’t ever see a day where the NHL would move to the 3rd spot, but does baseball want to ALIENATE more fans in an already shrinking fan

base? I’m just one guy, but I’m thinking they need to get this sorted out, and SOON. In local sports, I have a bunch to write about this column, as I’ll start with the Cape Atlantic League basketball.

High school wrestling is also taking place, as the big state wrestling championships are set at Boardwalk Hall from March 3rd to the 5th. I can’t wait for that.

Just like I’m excited to see the 2002 MAAC Basketball Tournament come back to Boardwalk Hall from March 8th through the 12th. This is the 3rd year of the MAAC coming to Atlantic City, and they haven’t gotten a fair shake because of the pandemic. I know I’m excited to see college basketball right in my backyard. In just his second year there, Rick Pitino has made Iona a major player in men’s college hoops.

Look for me at Boardwalk Hall March 8th through the 12th for sure.

I also know where I will be on Friday, March 25th, as I’m honored to be the MC for the Atlantic County Junior Football League’s 65th Anniversary event at Bally’s AC. I’m the MC, the legendary Ron Jaworski is the keynote speaker, and several current and former NFL personalities who have ties to the Atlantic County league are expected to be in attendance as well.

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman will be there. Current Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson is expected to be on hand. Former Jets GM Terry Bradway should be there, along with former players like Dino Hall, Joe Callahan,

My last local sports item is about Kylee Watson. What a treat it was to turn on my TV the other day and see Watson playing for Oregon against Stanford on ESPN2. Watson is a 6-4 sophomore with the Ducks, who are starting to get more minutes as she

gains maturity. Sadly, her Ducks really could’ve and maybe SHOULD’VE won the game against Stanford, losing 66-62. Watson finished with just 4 points and two rebounds in 15 minutes of play, but it was nice to see her get extended time because Nyara Sabally was in foul trouble. Go, Kylee! We are all rooting for you!

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment, starting with the new Amazon Prime series “Reacher”.

Based on the popular crime thriller novels by Lee Child, this version of Reacher is one that I fully endorse.

Hey, I’m a huge Tom Cruise fan, and the two movies he made in 2012 and 2016 were excellent popcorn movies. But Tom Cruise is 5-7, and in the books, Jack Reacher is described as blonde and 6-5. Which makes the casting of Alan Ritchson so perfect.

Ritchson is a former Abercrombie & Fitch model who is 6-4 and ripped.

The Amazon Prime series “Reacher” is based on the very first book “Killing Floor” which was released in 1997, so even I had a hard time remembering the details. Which made the series all the more entertaining! I recommend you check it out.

Regular readers here know that I consider BOOKS to be a form of entertainment, and I enjoyed reading “Ticking Clock: Behind the Scenes at 60 Minutes” by Ira Rosen. The

Google Review describes it as “Twotime Peabody Award-winning writer and producer Ira Rosen reveals the intimate, untold stories of his decades at America’s most iconic news show.

It’s a 60 Minutes story on 60 Minutes itself.” I couldn’t agree more. It was a fascinating read and I highly recommend this as well.

I’m going to “tweak” my closing here because I saw that Queen Elizabeth recently tested positive for Covid-19. Folks, we are SO close to things starting to ease up. With that in mind, I certainly hope you all stay safe & healthy. No matter where you are if a mask is required, it’s for a reason. Please keep leading with kindness.

Artist Creates Maps of Jersey Shore Towns

he COVID-19 pandemic has changed work for hundreds of people, and many have finally had the opportunity to pursue what they love. This is Jessie Husband’s story.

The Philadelphia native has always loved art but worked long hours as a project manager in the city. Art was always put on the back burner until she found herself without a job in early 2020. Husband has always

been fascinated with maps and created artsy maps of Philadelphia and its suburbs. “When I ran out of Philly towns, I thought of where Philly people love to vacation: the Jersey Shore,” said Husband.

Husband designed maps of Brigantine, Longport and Margate, Ventnor, Ocean City, Wildwood, North Wildwood, Wildwood Crest, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Sea Isle City, and Cape May. She incorporates bright colors and town icons, like in her Ocean City piece, she highlights Manco and Manco, the Wonderland ferris wheel, the Music Pier, Night in Venice, the sunken ship Sindia, and even the definition of the local term “Shoobie.” “This is an awesome way to explore cities,” said Husband.

The ar tist isn’t limited to maps. Husband prints her designs on beach towels so shore lovers can cel-

ebrate their favorite place at the beach. She creates custom maps for couples, marking their home or even mapping out their life journey. When one of her friend’s kids graduated college, she gifted him a map of his university. She also creates lyric art, featuring musicians such as John Prine, Dave Matthews Band, Willie Nelson, the Avett Brothers, Phish, and Bob Dylan. Husband also offers custom prints for anyone looking to buy a unique piece. And if you are looking for a hoodie or something wearable, Husband has you covered.

This summer, you’ll find Husband, her wife, and her son soaking up the son in Wildwood, their favorite beach town. “I love the old signage and retro feel,” she said. “We spend all day at the beach and do the boardwalk at night, drawing from the peace of the ocean and buzz of the people around us.” When she isn’t doing art, Husband loves spending time outside and eating delicious food (she’s a self-proclaimed foodie).

Six Easy Ways to Celebrate Black History Month

e get it. You’ve gotten caught up in work, or family responsibilities , or watching the latest season of “Emily in Paris” and you forgot to sober yourself and reflect on Black History Month. The good news is, Black history is never confined to a calendar month.

In May 2020, when the nation was protesting the wrongful death of George Floyd, you may have vowed to yourself to do the work as an ally for BIPOC (Black Indigenous Person of Color) and to be an active part of positive change. That dust has since settled and now is the time to continue the commitments we made in 2020.

Here are six ways to celebrate Black History Month and continue to incorporate these practices into everyday life: Visit Local HistoricallyBlack Landmarks South Jersey offers plenty of education when it comes to Black history. The Harriet Tubman Museum of New Jersey was recently

opened in Cape May, focusing on Tubman’s life in Cape May in the 1850’s. She worked as a cook for businesses and families, and the money she earned funded exoduses of slaves she rescued from Maryland. In addition to visiting the museum, check out other spots like Chicken Bone Beach in Atlantic City (which talented Shore Local writer Krystle Bailey covered this past summer), and Richardson Avenue School in Gloucester County.

The school is the last standing “separate but equal” school in New Jersey, and after the school’s closing in 1942, the structure has served as a meeting place for Black locals.

Read Black Authors The book world has become much more diverse in recent years.

One of my favorite reads is “Just Mercy” by Bryan Stevenson. The book illustrates the struggles of Black men facing a racist and unjust criminal justice system, often leading to the deaths of innocent people. The book will make you cry, and you can shed tears again after Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, James Baldwin, and Ta-Nehisi Coates.

Support Black-Owned Businesses Kelsey’s restaurant in Atlantic City has fantastic soul food and a great reputation in South Jersey.

QC Waterworks offers car washes and power washing of homes and businesses. Reviews say that the staff is professional and knowledgeable, and their work exceeds all expectations. With a little research, you can help Black business owners overcome the unequal American business economy and succeed on all levels.

Watch Black History Documentaries and Films One of the best ways to learn something is by watching movies.

When I saw “13th” (named after the thirteenth amendment) in college, I cried throughout the whole thing.

The documentary addresses how the Constitution legalizes slavery as a punishment for crimes, so racist police officers would arrest Black men unfairly. Other films that celebrate Black lives are “The Hate You Give,” “The Color Purple,” “Get Out,” “Hidden Figures,” “Black Panther,” and “Do the Right Thing.” If you are looking for a documentary, try “I am Not Your Negro” and “King of the Wilderness.”

Listen to Black Musicians It’s easy to listen to Beyonce and feel empowered, but try and enjoy Black artists from all kinds of genres. For more of a soulful feel, give a listen to Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Prince, Tina Turner, James Brown and Andra Day. If you want to awe at new, raw talent, turn on Tyler the Creator, Shamir, Sza, Ivy Sole, The Weekend, and H.E.R. Of course, if you love Bob Marley, play Bob Marley. Spotify has tons of Black History Month playlists, so put one on while you’re cooking, cleaning or commuting.

Reflect on How Racial Discrimination In Your Own Life Black History Month highlights the best and worst times in American history. We love to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black athletes, inventors, scientists, and difference makers. We are also reminded of the traumas that generations of Black Americans have endured. Self-reflection holds power and healing. After visiting, watching, or reading some of the aforementioned suggestions, take time to reflect in a journal about how racism and prejudices have played a role in your life.

The Benefits of Preplanning your Funeral

n our society most people can see the benefits of making plans in advance. Despite this common belief, there is a certain segment of our society that live by the seat of their pants and are reactive as opposed to proactive. But even for those individuals who are not planners, many of them will agree that it is good to be prepared or at least think about future life events.

We as a people plan many things, what is going to be our first car, where are we going to go to college and for what degree, what job do we want to do or who do we want to work for, where are we going to go for our next vacation, when are we going to retire. There are tons of decisions in life, big and small, that need to be made and in most cases planning can go a long way as to how

we are going to achieve our goals when we make those decisions.

So, with that being said I am going to tackle the absolutely last major decision that everybody needs to make and also talk about why and how you would prepare for it.

What am I speaking of?

Your funeral/memorial service of course! If you are a regular reader of my articles you probably knew I wasn't going to talk about divorce or your retirement plan.

Here is the sad truth of life. At some point in my life, I am going to die. Here is another truth, at some point you are going to die. On a long enough time line everyone in this town, state, nation and planet will die. Why am I being so brutal with this fact that I am smashing it in your face? Everyone is mortal. Because, we as humans don't like to acknowledge this fact and western cultures, especially Americans, will do anything to not have to deal with death until they have no choice because grandpa, who has been on hospice for a year,

just passed away in his recliner rocker watching tv and they don't know what to do! They had no plan in place!

I said everything in that paragraph above not to offend or upset any of you but to drive home a point that very few want to face and hopefully get you all to think. Our time here is not infinite and we should plan our end of life decisions based on that fact. I will tell you that on average I get about one to two phone calls a week from someone who is calling because they have a family member who is not well and is expected to

die any day and they want to know what they should do. Well, it is good that they called but they really should have called me sooner because more could have been done in advance. Worse, about once a week I get a call, usually from a family friend because the immediate family is too distraught to talk to me directly, that a death has occured and they don't know what to do. In these situations, I as a professional and the firm I work for help and handle the situation to get them where they need to be by the time everything is finished. But, it could always be handled better so that the death of the loved one, although ,heartbreaking and tragic, is not as chaotic and less stressful.
