Addressing Driver Shortage; ACUA partners with CDL Training School for onsite training

T

he Atlantic County Utilities Authority will launch a pilot program to train employees to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) onsite at their Solid Waste facility in Egg Harbor Township.

“Like many other industries and businesses across the nation, we are in need of drivers with Commercial Driver’s Licenses,” ACUA president Rick Dovey notes. “We’ve partnered with our County Workforce Development Office and a local driving school to create a pilot program to bring professional CDL training to our facility in Egg Harbor Township. This will allow existing employees to build their skills and earn a valuable credential to enhance their careers and salaries, while helping us to meet our employment needs,” Dovey added.

This initiative will begin in January, in advance of new federal rules that will require professional training for CDL licensing. Employees who meet the eligibility criteria will receive 40 hours of training at the ACUA’s Environmental Park at 6700 Delilah Road. Training will be done over the

course of five Saturdays and will be provided by Mike’s Driving School of Williamstown.

“One of the great things about having the training on site is not only the convenience for our employees, but also the fact that they will be training on the vehicles and equipment that they will actually be driving, so they will be ready to go on the road sooner without significant additional training following classes at another site,” ACUA Human Resources Director Sharon Hunt commented. The training program will limit class size to allow new drivers to maximize learning.

In the past, employees interested in earning a CDL license received encouragement and support from the ACUA to prepare for their test, including guidance for the written test to obtain a permit and being paired with a CDL driver for behind the wheel practice on site once a per-

mit was obtained. “Before this pilot program, these steps were a definite help to interested employees, and many were able to earn their CDLs to advance in their careers. However, the new regulations, coupled with the changing employment landscape, have made it imperative to look beyond what worked in the past,” Hunt noted.

The program is made possible through an UPSKILL: NJ Incumbent

Worker Training Grant from the Atlantic County Workforce Development Office, which will cover 50% of the cost for ACUA. The cost for an individual to engage this training privately could cost approximately $5000. ACUA employees will not have to pay the fee for the training, which will be required by federal law in February 2022.

During the past year, the Atlantic County Workforce Development Office has expanded its focus from individuals in need of employment, to work directly to help employers meet their needs. “The Workforce Development Office has been a great resource for us. They recognize the need to diversify employment opportunities in our area and have been very helpful. We are really pleased to be able to offer this new program to our employees - it’s a win for everyone,” Rick Dovey stated.

tween Christmas and New Year’s Eve tends to be a blur, but it is also an invitation to slow down. Entering into the new year is an opportunity to evaluate where we stand in life and look at areas that we would like to improve upon.

I’ve never been a big fan of resolutions.

I prefer to focus on the power of creating new, healthy habits while ridding myself of patterns that no longer serve me.

sions we make and the actions we perform daily. Our lives are a reflection of our habits. What we repeatedly do adds up and moves us in one direction or another.

Making and breaking habits is a perpetual process. As we grow, change, and evolve, so do our habits.

Goals, rather, are destinations at which we wish to arrive. While it’s essential to have a vision for what we want in life, our daily habits are the vehicle to arrive at that destination. Creating healthy habits doesn’t necessarily equate to perfection.

I’ve often fallen into the trap of the “all or nothing” mindset, leaving me feeling like a failure on the days I’d wander off course.

I’ve found that the key to creating lasting habits is the ability to bounce back time and time again.

I’ve spent the better part of my adult life trying to develop and maintain good habits. However, recently, I’ve noticed that I unintentionally developed some not-sohealthy habits. As we are all two years deep into a pandemic that rocked our worlds, I suspect that I am not alone.

What began as a coping mechanism in response to a tragic loss over time became an unhealthy habit for me. This year, I am committed to reversing course and reclaiming my life. As I work on this change in my life, I want to share some things that are working for me.

1. Prepare to feel uncomfortable: Changing a routine that brings comfort is never easy. We often hear about the word “willpower.” In my opinion, willpower is simply the willingness to get uncomfortable with change.

2. Create a game plan: As the saying goes, “failing to plan is planning to fail.” Create a game plan that includes a start date and a tracking mechanism to keep yourself on course.

3. Establish incentives: You are in control of your fate. Create an incentive plan to motivate yourself when the going gets tough. You can create symbolic rewards, such as throwing dollars into a cookie jar, for every day you engage in positive behavior.

4. Keep temptation away: This is the most helpful one for me.

If you want to eat better, keep unhealthy foods from your pantry and fridge. If you want to quit smoking, get rid of every cigarette. “Out of sight, out of mind.”

5. Recognize that it’s a journey: We are all fallible humans. Habits take approximately 21 days to make or break.

Give yourself time, grace, and patience along the journey.

New State Bailouts for Atlantic City Casinos Strike Controversy

wo weeks ago, Governor Murphy signed into law a new plan (added onto an already existing bill) to give major tax breaks to casinos in Atlantic City, claiming that the entertainment industry in South Jersey has been severely affected by the pandemic.

Payments in leu of taxes, or PILOT for short was developed as a sort of guarantee to fund the government.

The new law was brought about after many casinos had their properties reassessed after their values dropped.

The money given back through their successful tax appeals left Atlantic City and Atlantic County with a budget crisis.

S4007 was signed by Murphy after it passed through the House in its last voting session for 2021.

Murphy gave no explanation for his approval, instead simply signed it into law. Sponsors of the bill say that the action was necessary to keep the ca-

sinos profitable, limit job losses, and stave off several casino closures.

The casinos they claim that may have been forced to close were not named.

The new law is an amended version of an already existing tax break available for casinos since 2016. This was a time when Atlantic City was reeling after the 5 casinos had closed. Now, the legislature has almost doubled the savings amount. The law exempts sports betting and online gambling platforms that have become popular in recent years. Members of the state legislature claimed that while online gambling has boosted profits for the casinos, the numbers are skewed, and in-person gaming has decreased significantly in Atlantic City.

Because of the passing of S4007, casinos will pay $55 million less than what they were previously forking over to the government. This amount will range between $30 and 65 million until 2026.

Critics say that the new law is controversial because despite the pandemic, casino revenues are up from previous years. Outgoing Senate President Sweeney (D-Gloucester) says that as an expert in the casino industry, he knows that this legislative action prevents job losses in Atlantic County. Sweeney has developed the reputation of supporting every benefit for Atlantic City. “If this law hadn’t passed, up to four casinos are likely to close,” he said.

One significant claim against the tax break is that more of the burden to fund community services will fall on vulnerable taxpayers. Don Guardian, a former Atlantic City major, said that Atlantic County residents will be breaking their own backs to ensure the success of the tourism industry in their hometowns. Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson has filed a lawsuit against the Murphy administration. “It’s just flat out unfair,” he said.

Rosie Redner, a resident of Atlantic County and employee of one of the AC casinos, says that the casinos should be as responsible for funding schools and infrastructure as households. “The casinos provide jobs so we can make money, only so we can bail them out with our paychecks,” she said. “The trickle-down effect that politicians preach simply doesn’t work. It makes our lives harder.”

This law is the latest in a series of government actions that monopolize city-hall decisions in Atlantic City and

other beach towns. In January 2021, Murphy signed an executive order to build wind farms off the coast of Brigantine. Over the past four years, the legislature has renegotiated union contracts for casino workers, selling city assets, and overturning decisions made by the Atlantic City Council.

“This has to be a true partnership and I think everyone benefited from that,” said Murphy in a press conference. “I personally think in the spirit of partnership, we can’t walk away from each other, and there’s a lot of unfinished business, including exciting new economic opportunities.”

This “partnership” began as a 2017 campaign promise to revitalize Atlantic City by empowering the state to act as a parent to the city.

Murphy claimed to be “working with the community,” but has not reached out to the local government. Atlantic City leaders have protested this relationship, arguing that Murphy is “big-footing” the democratic process for residents, 39,000 whom are minorities.

cean City’s popular First Night will return for the 29th time this year, and a full lineup of entertainment and activities remains on schedule for the Dec. 31 celebration.

First Night offers more than 70 entertainment programs at 20 different venues throughout town. The lineup includes something to satisfy every taste and age group. A fireworks display rings in the new year at midnight. The fun continues on New Year’s Day with a 5-kilometer run on the boardwalk and the First Plunge in the Atlantic Ocean.

The headliner for First Night 2022 is the Grammy-winning group Tavares. Top hits from Tavares include “It Only Takes a Minute," "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel,” "Don't Take Away the Music” and "More Than a Woman." The kids will love Grammy-winning children’s artist Tim Kubart, who will be joined on stage for an interactive show by his band, the Space Cadets.

The rides at Wonderland Pier will return this year, and other returning favorites include the ice-skating rink, inflatables, the Harlem Wizards, a karaoke party, magician Chad Juros, a Country Line Dance Experience and the Legacy Band.

The Ocean City Arts Center will join the fun this year with a social music listening activity called “Hear Here!” That will make the Ocean City Community Center a special for activities with events under the same roof at the Free Public Library, Aquatic & Fitness Center, Historical Museum, Library Atrium and the Senior Center.

Italian New Year's Eve Traditions

t’s hard to believe that another year has come and gone so quickly. I keep asking myself where has the time gone? I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling this way and believe many Shore Local readers also feel this way.

As with everyone who has had career in the food industry, I’ve spent my New Year’s Eves working, either in big party venues like the casino parties in their large ballrooms or in smaller venues like my own restaurants. But when I was growing up in Italy, which is a very superstitious country, we had many ways to celebrate New Year's Eve, known as the Vigilia, Capodanno or Festa di San Silvestro.

Italians celebrate New Year’s with a cenone (big feast), often featuring foods symbolic of wishes for the coming year, washed down with

plenty of Prosecco or spumante ("sparkling wine").

Pork plays a role in many New Year’s feasts around the world, and in Italy it is the star of the show. Italian folklore suggests that eating sausage before midnight is a good omen for the New Year because sausage made with pig’s trotters (pig’s feet) contains a high fat content which symbolizes abundance.

Some think that the custom of serving pork comes from the pig’s habit of rooting forward, symbolizing our intention to mark the New Year with a renewed commitment to moving forward ourselves. When pork is eaten with coin-shaped lentils, which are believed to bring good luck and prosperity, the diner’s financial outlook for the next year is supposed to be better than the previous one.

New Year’s Day dinner historically features zampone e lenticchie (pig’s trotters and lentils). Zampone is a hollowed-out, deboned pig’s foot stuffed with sausage, then cut into rounds after cooking and served with lentils. A variation on this is cotechino

e lenticchie, a big, fat sausage from Modena that contains the meat of the trotter and is sliced into coin-shaped rounds after cooking; it is served with lentils and mashed potatoes.

In the past several years cotechino has been imported into the United States, but you only could find it at high-end Italian restaurants in New York City. But, if you want to try it here in South Jersey, I have it available at Eat @ Joe’s in EHT. I serve it on a grilled sandwich roll with caramelized onions, spicy bagnetto verde sauce (a pesto-like sauce made with parsley) and provolone cheese. Mama Mia, it’s delicious.

In the Piemonte where I grew up, grains of rice represent coins, because rice “grows” or increases in volume in the pot, the way we would like our wealth to multiply in the new year. So, we always included risotto in bianco with our meal.

Dessert is dried fruit and red grapes. It’s said to take great willpower to conserve some grapes from the harvest until New Year’s Eve,

indicating that everyone at the table will hopefully be wise and frugal with their newfound wealth.

One fun custom that starts right after Christmas is that stores start hanging red undergarments in their windows because both men and women are supposed to wear red underwear on New Year’s Eve to bring luck in the coming year. And since red is the color of fertility, those hoping to conceive in the following year also wear red.

To banish previous bad luck, particularly in southern Italy, there’s an attitude of out with the old and in with the new, and in the old days old pots and pans, clothes or any old and unwanted items were thrown from upstairs windows. Today you’re more likely to see people smashing plates and glasses on the ground to drive away evil spirits.

All Italians love fireworks! And New Year’s Eve celebrations, like in almost every other country, are celebrated with amazing fireworks to drive the evil spirits away.

Finally, although I don’t usually make New Year’s resolutions, I really am going to try to slow down a bit in 2019 and as they say, “take time to smell the roses!”

To Hell with the Hustle: Choosing Intentionality Over Ambition

he new year always seems to require work. With each passing year, we challenge ourselves to be better, whether it’s by dieting, exercising, committing to religion, reading more, or saving up for retirement. The most ambitious among us create smaller goals within our resolution to tackle individually, assuring your 2022 victory. At least, that’s how I am.

I used to love the hustle. I’m the kind of person that would run for student government, and work 40 hours per week. Even in my spare time, I would relax by making to-do lists, prescribing enrichment “fun” activities like creating art to sell on Etsy, hiking with a friend to move my body, and attending my weekly singing lesson. As I mull this over, I realized that I didn’t even know what it’s like to relax. I just kept running.

We aren’t born with a natural desire to hustle. It’s embedded in our brains through social media, among other influences. Scrolling through a

highlight reel of someone else’s life, it is easy to forget all their downtime and negative moments. It can seem as if those unrecorded moments don’t exist at all. Therefore, all we see is an endless virtual trophy case, not an autobiography. How can we, as real people, compete with only the highlights?

We work harder.

We apply for essay writing competitions, cook photo-wor thy meals, plan bachelorette blow-outs, and pretend our walk to work is a strut down the runway. T aw awhis competition never ends!

No one is declared a winner because there is no finish line.

You may be tempted to post your 2022 new year’s resolution on social media. You may desperately seek social approval of your keto cleanse,

devotion to combat climate change, or monthly donation to charity. However, here’s my challenge to do something radical: don’t set a resolution.

Don’t center your life around a goal to heighten your social status. Don’t turn living your life into work.

Instead of projecting outwardly, try to set intentions inwardly. A goal is achieved by accomplishing a mea surable result, whereas an intention is simply a focus or mantra to explore for an undetermined amount of time.

For example, you might choose to live slowly this year. This may seem vague, but you could chew your food thoroughly, pause between chores, and read books rather than watch the movie versions. Living slowly could mean choosing a new

career path, practicing meditation, or starting a gratitude journal. It’s not a race, but rather a state of being.

Talk with your partner, friend or family about your intentions for the year, and perhaps you’ll be able to work together. Practice mindfulness and try to exist completely centered in your body, aware of any sensation (like sitting in your chair) or input (perhaps the whistle of the wind).

Read every word on a page rather than skimming it. Taste the spices in your dinner rather than gulping it down.

This year, my intention is to become more involved in my community. I hope to meet friends at church, volunteer at a nonprofit, and support local businesses with my purchases. I recently moved back to South Jersey and am letting go of negative thoughts surrounding the move. Instead, I am stepping into appreciation and curiosity. I am thankful to have the opportunity to write for this magazine, and if you see me on the streets, ask me about my intentions. I would love to connect.

Submarine pioneer Simon Lake remembered A Look Back

ictures of Simon Lake and hls 1897 submarine are included in the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History exhibit.

The following is from poster at the beginning of the exhibit: “American attempts to develop underwater boats achieved some success during the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Unfortunately, such boats usually proved more dangerous to their crews than their targets. Only in the 1890s did John Holland and Simon Lake develop practical submersible boats.”

The caption under a picture of Simon Lake and his submarine reads: “Simon Lake had his Argonaut 1 built in a Baltimore, Maryland, dry dock.

Launched in 1897, her most conspicuous feature were the large retractable wheels intended to enable her to creep along the sea floor, but she proved seaworthy as well. Powered by a 30-horsepower gasoline engine that

drew air from the surface through a pair of tubes, the Argonaut 1 sailed more than 2,000 miles (3,200 km), including an open-sea excursion from Cape May to Sandy Hook during a storm that sank 100 other ships. The feat brought a congratulatory letter from Jules Verne, the world-famous author of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1873). Reading that book as a youth had aroused Lake’s interest in submarines.”

Simon Lake, the grandson of and nephew of the founders of Ocean City, was born on September 4, 1866 in Pleasantville, N. J. He moved to Ocean City in 1883 and worked in the family’s shade roller manufacturing plant.

He is credited with being Ocean City’s first commuter. In 1885, he was a regular passenger on the train to Philadelphia where he attended mechanical engineering classes at the Franklin Institute.

Simon moved to Baltimore in 1889 where he designed and built his first submarine, Argonaut Jr., in 1894. It was a 14-foot boxy wagon made of yellow pine with wheels for driving on the ocean floor. Three years later, he designed and built Argonaut 1 which was the first submarine to navigate in open waters when it traveled from Norfolk, Virginia to New York City through heavy storms, proving the seaworthiness of this type of submarine construction.

In 1901, Simon Lake designed and built the Protector. This submarine was 75-feet long and was capable of

diving to 150-feet. It was powered by a gasoline engine on the surface, by batteries when submerged.

Simon Lake spent his life designing, building and selling submarines. When he died at the age of 79, he was president of the Lake Submarine Salvage Corporation, the Industrial Submarine Corporation, the Lake Engineering Company, and vice president of the Lake Torpedo Boat Company.

“Simon Lake, Sub Inventor, Dies; Spent Part of Boyhood in Resort,” was the headline of the June 29, 1945, Ocean City Sentinel-Ledger.

The obituary began: “Simon Lake, who became the most widely known member of the family that founded Ocean City died Saturday night in a hospital at Bridgeport, Conn.. in his 80th year.”

The obituary ended reporting he was a frequent visitor to Ocean City: “Best known as the inventor of the submarine, Simon Lake was for many years a speaker at the annual reunions of the Lake family in the Camp Ground Tabernacle here.”

Bring Health to the Holiday Party Nutrition

oliday Parties are a wonderful time of year to celebrate family and friends. Along with that though, comes excessive amounts of food and drink. If you’ve been on your nutritional journey to better health and well-being the holidays present themselves with many challenges. It's tough to say no to all the temptations. It’s not about saying no to everything. It’s about making some good choices and not overdoing it.

A few tips include trying to eat something before you go to the party so you aren’t hungry and more likely to overeat. Eat something like a bit of protein, egg, chicken… before you leave for the party.

This will prevent needless calories consumed at the party. Also if you want a holiday cocktail, try drinking a club soda with lime or lemon when you arrive. Save the alcoholic drink for midway through the party. Then you’ll consume a lot less than if you had a cocktail as soon as you arrived at the party.

It’s always a great idea to bring a host and hostess a dish for the party. Bring something you would like to nibble on that is within the structure of your healthy eating plan. Something everyone will en-

joy! It’s a win-win situation for all.

2 cups chickpeas (garbanzo beans) rinsed and drained ● 1/4 cup tahini (sesame paste) ● 1/4 cup water ● 1/2 cup olive oil ● 2 cloves garlic, minced ● Juice of 2 to 3 lemons (about 3 tbsp) ● 3/4 tsp. Five Healthy Recipes for the New Year

I

f you’re like me, these past two months have been overflowing with cookies, pies, honey-glazed hams, and cheese boards. The flow of wine and beer has been almost sinful. Holidays bring on some delicious foods and a couple of extra pounds. The new year is the perfect time to focus on health and wellness. It can be overwhelming to cook healthy meals, but with a little creativity, you’ll still feel satisfied after dinner. Here are five recipes that’ll taste and feel healthy and whole:

Tuna Poke Bowl

Ingredients: ● Ahi Tuna steak ● 1 cup of whole-grain rice ● Chopped mango ● Edamame beans ● Microgreens ● Sesame seeds ● Lemon vinaigrette Clean tuna steak and dry it with a paper towel. Cut the steak into 1-inch cubes and then put it to the side.

Cook rice over the stove or in a rice cooker and scoop into a serving bowl.

Add edamame, mango, and microgreens to the bowl. Top with seeds and vinaigrette, along with tuna.

Stir together, evenly coating the dish with the dressing. Enjoy!

Jambalaya

Avocado Toast

Ingredients: ● 2 pieces of wholegrain bread ● Half of a fresh avocado ● An egg, poached ● Salt and pepper to taste ● Sriracha sauce Toast the bread until browned on all sides.

Boil three cups of water on the stove.

Once water is bubbling, crack an egg into the water. Stir without breaking the yolk. When the egg has whitened on all sides, spoon out the egg.

Mash avocado in a bowl with salt and pepper. Spread evenly on each piece of bread.

Ingredients: 3 cups of brown rice, cooked ● 1 cup of shrimp, deveined ● 1 cup of crab meat ● 1 cup of spicy sausage ● 2 okra ● 1 large yellow onion ● 5 cloves of garlic ● 1 small can of tomato paste ● 1 packet of cajun seasoning ● 1 green bell pepper ● 2 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce ● 2 tbsp of olive oil Cook rice over the stove or in a rice cooker and place it to the side.

Dice onion, green pepper, garlic, and okra.

In a large soup pot, brown sausage, shrimp, and crab meat for 15 minutes over medium. Remove when browned.

Dump onion, garlic, pepper, and okra into the pot and let simmer in sausage juices for 8 minutes.

Add tomato paste, cajun seasoning, and Worcestershire to the veggies. Stir until evenly mixed.

Pour rice, crab, shrimp, and sausage back into the pot. Stir, turn off the heat, and serve! ●

Ingredients: ● 2 cups of almond milk ● ¼ tbsp of ground ginger ● 2 tsp of maple syrup ● 2 tsp of turmeric ● 1 tsp of cinnamon ● 1 tsp of vanilla extract ● 1 tbsp of honey In a small saucepan, add milk, syrup, honey, and spices. Cook for 8 minutes over medium heat, stirring constantly until milk is warm and frothy.

Pour into a mug and top with ground cinnamon. Enjoy!

Ingredients: ● 1 large tomato, sliced ● 1 scoop of pesto ● 1 spurt of balsamic vinaigrette ● 3 thick slices of fresh mozzarella ● 1 brioche bun ● Spinach Clean and slice the tomato and put it to the side. Warm halves of brioche bun on the stove over medium heat for three minutes. Spread pesto on the bottom bun and layer with tomato slices and cheese. Stuff spinach and top with vinaigrette.

Add the top bun and take a bite.

Czeching Out Nut Rolls and Other Family Recipes Let It Grow

rowing up in Pittsburgh, my “food influencers” were a mix of my Czechoslovakia and Italian/Serbian relatives, along with Polish family friends. Foods such as pierogies and pizzelles often found their way to the table, as well as sauerkraut and kielbasa on New Year’s Day. and late night texting to my aunt in Pittsburgh, we muddled through it all pretty well.

Six giant nut rolls later, my friends and neighbors will be the judges to tell if we interpreted the recipe correctly. But I know my mom was proud to sit and watch me rolling the nut covered dough, just as she had so many times before. Recipes that have been passed down through the family simply taste better. itting down to write this as we say GOODBYE to 2021 and HELLO to 2022!

Since I last wrote, the Eagles beat the Washington Football Team to put themselves squarely back in the thick of the NFC playoff race.

Plus, Pro Bowl selections are out. The Flyers (and the rest of the NHL) shut down early for the holiday break because of Covid-19 concerns. The Sixers had a few games postponed, but then take the court right before Christmas.

The Phillies have been quiet since the shutdown, but they did sign six pitchers to minor-league contracts, including a name with local ties. Speaking of local, on the local front, an annual holiday tradition returns for area high school basketball.

From entertainment, there’s a movie on Amazon Prime right now that I’ve been waiting to see. Plus, did you see the domestic box office for the latest Marvel movie? Even I might have to

check that one out in the theater! As always though, we begin with sports, and my thoughts: ● I’ll start with the Eagles as they started off with a few costly turnovers, but ultimately beat the Washington Football Team 27-17 with me in attendance as a fan. In a game that was supposed to be played on Sunday December 19th, the Eagles instead lined up on Tuesday December 21st and then ran all over Washington racking up 238 yards total in rushing. ● The Eagles are just the ninth team in NFL history to have seven straight games of at least 175 rushing yards, and they’re the first since the 1985 Chicago Bears. That team had Walter Peyton and won the Super Bowl. The jury is still out on this Eagles team, but not on the offensive line. I think the Eagles offensive line just might be the best in all of football right now. ● Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata are legit freaks at tackle. They have great depth at guard as Nate Herbig and Sua Opeta got the start. Opeta filling in for Landon Dickerson, who was in the Covid-19 protocol. And

in the middle? One of the most beloved Philly athletes of all-time, in center Jason Kelce.

Miles Sanders carried the ball 18 times for a career-high 131 rushing yards. The Eagles ability to run the football helped Jalen Hurts settle in

and complete 20 of 26 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown.

And on that one touchdown throw, it was a sweet pitch & catch to Greg Ward out of Hurts, who also ran for two TD’s. Consider he had a passing rating of just over 17 in his previous game against the Giants, this was an OUTSTANDING performance for Hurts.

But, it won’t mean a thing, unless the Eagles follow it up with a win over the Giants at home the day after Christmas. As I write this, I can’t know that outcome yet, however I do know the Eagles have to keep winning if they want to make the playoffs.

One final Eagles note as Jason Kelce and Darius Slay are named to the Pro Bowl. It’s Kelce’s fifth Pro Bowl selection and Slay’s fourth, but his first as an Eagle. Kelce, 34, has been selected three straight years and holds the record for most Pro Bowls for an Eagles center. He’s made 119 consecutive starts and has made several highlight blocks in space this season. I’m telling you

folks, some day it looks like we’ll see Kelce pulling on a yellow blazer in Canton, Ohio!

Less than a day after the initial Pro Bowl rosters were announced, Eagles QB Jalen Hurts was added to the NFC roster as an alternate.

Hurts now has 10 rushing touchdowns, a new franchise record for an Eagles QB in a single season, breaking the previous mark set by Michael Vick. Listen, I don’t know if he’s the answer long-term, but I do know that Hurts has earned the right for the Eagles NOT to draft a quarterback or pursue one in free agency or a trade. Get him more weapons with the now THREE firstround draft picks that they will have next April.

Now to the Flyers, where Covid-19 forced the NHL and the NHLPA to institute a leaguewide pause running through Christmas Day. The Flyers were scheduled to host Washington last Tuesday, however they postponed that game both out of an abundance of caution, and also because the parking lots at the Wells Fargo Center would’ve been a nightmare with folks trying to park for the Eagles game too. A road game against Pittsburgh also got postponed, so the Flyers are now not scheduled to play again until

December 29th as they begin their annual West Coast trip with stops in Seattle, San Jose, Los Angeles and Anaheim.

With the long break, the Flyers might get back 34-year-old Derick Brassard from a hip injury. He’s back listed as “day to day” and might be healthy and ready to go for that West Coast trip. The Flyers should also have back Carter Hart from the Covid-19 protocols as Hart is reportedly “feeling better”.

As I write this, only three (3) Flyers are still in the Covid-19 protocols: Kevin Hayes (December 20), Max Willman (December 18) and Morgan Frost (December 14). With the long break, Frost might also be available for the West Coast trip as well.

One final hockey note, as the NHL has pulled OUT of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. Instead

of an Olympic break, that time will now be used to make up postponed games because of the recent Covid-19 outbreak. This is the right decision, but still a shame because it was the players who wanted this.

NHL players last participated in the Winter Games in 2014 in Sochi.

Now let’s address the Sixers, as I’m writing this fresh off a disappointing 98-96 loss at home to the shorthanded Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta had lost seven of its last ten games coming in and had several players sidelined. Yet, the Sixers still could not find a way to win.

Now, to be fair, the Sixers were missing some players too. However, when Atlanta comes in missing seven players in health and safety protocols and three others sidelined with injuries, you have to find a way to win that game!

Joel Embiid did his part, finishing with a game-high 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. However, the Sixers made only 6 of 27 three-pointers. Embiid (6-for-17) Tobias Harris (5-for-14), and Furkan Korkmaz (2-for-6) had rough shooting nights from the field.

Slow starts have doomed the Sixers lately. The Sixers missed nine of their first 12 shots and trailed by 21-7 early. Things were so bad

that Harris inadvertently scored a basket for the Hawks while trying to grab a defensive rebound underneath the basket! The Sixers had four players in the protocols while Ben Simmons still hasn’t played this season while requesting a trade.

Real quick, let me pause here to pay tribute to former radio guy Skip “Memory Lane” Clayton. Clayton spent 59 years working in radio, and was integral to me meeting Julius Erving for the first time. When I was a kid, my friend’s father took us to a Sixers game at the Spectrum.

After the game, we searched out Skip near the box office, and as we were visiting with him, Dr. J walked through the lobby. Clayton called out to him, and Erving stopped to visit with two wide-eyed 9-yearolds. I later would go on to work

alongside Skip in the Phillies press box, where he had earned the nickname “Memory Lane”. Many will remember Clayton’s name because the late Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas would always reference him in a recurring bit where every foul ball that was even remotely close to the press box was another “error on Skip “Memory Lane” Clayton” R.I.P. Skip, and thanks for the great memory you provided me one night at The Spectrum in 1980.

The Phillies made some news right as we went to print last issue when they signed Cam Bedrosian and five other pitchers to minor-league contracts. The relievers — all right-handed — received non-roster invitations to major-league camp but will most likely provide depth at Triple-A. The owners’ lockout has frozen the 40-man rosters, but the notable name on this list is South Jersey native Joey Gatto. Gatto, 26, posted a 3.32 ERA in 35 appearances this year between double A and triple A in the Texas Rangers’ organization. He was born in Voorhees and attended St. Augustine Prep in Richland. Welcome home Joey!

On the local sports front, welcome back to the Boardwalk Basketball Classic in Wildwood. Billed as the largest co-ed basketball tournament in the nation, the 2020 tournament was called off because of the pandemic. But it’s great to see hoops at the Wildwoods Convention Center again.

As always, I’ll close with a few items from entertainment, starting with a new movie on Amazon Prime that I’m going to check out called “Being The Ricardos”. I wrote about this one in an earlier Shore Local issue, as it chronicles the relationship between “I Love Lucy” stars Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, this is ABSOLUTELY on my “must see”

Finally, because of all the hype, I think I may have to get to the Tilton Square Theater and watch “Spider Man: Far From Home” in IMAX this holiday season. The latest Marvel movie opened to record numbers as it was the 3rd highest domestic box office in history. As I write this, it’s about to pass the $800 million mark worldwide, which is pretty impressive considering it isn’t even playing in China. Oh yes, this is definitely one I think I need to see in the theater As always, I’ll close this as I usually do. With a reminder that the pandemic is not OVER and I certainly hope you all stay safe & healthy. No matter where you are, if a mask is required, it’s for a reason. Local Production of “A Christmas Carol” Wows Crowds

A

fter months of hard work, Gateway Playhouse of Somers Point put on their first produced show, “A Christmas Carol: The Musical.” There have been performances throughout the month of December, which have amazed children and adults alike.

The Dickens classic centers around Ebenezer Scrooge, the Victorian-era miser who believes in hoarding money instead of celebrating Christmas and being charitable. Three ghosts int ro duce t hem selves to Scrooge on Christmas Eve and show him his grim past, present, and future.

Confronted with his imminent death, Scrooge emerges as a changed man who gives away Christmas turkeys and even dances in the street.

The director, Philip Pallitto, writes in his director’s note, “It seems we love the idea that even the most despicable of us is potentially redeemable and those of us in the greatest need will find compassion and ultimately assistance. We also love a good ghost story.”

The cast consisted of younger and older folks, some new to showbusiness and some veterans. The young girl who played Tiny Tim, Greta Rebecca Kleinman, has performed in multiple productions (and with star playwright Lin Manuel Miranda) and captivated the audience with a believable limp and incredible voice. Scrooge (played by Steven Ciapanna) looked like a humbug himself in the first act, scorning his nephew and scolding the women on the

Playhouse, said that he is proud of the cast and crew. “It’s been a fantastic season. A lot of people are apprehensive because of the pandemic, but we have been very successful in selling out of tickets for almost every show,” he said. “We couldn’t be happier.

Gateway Playhouse has entertained audiences since 1920. The building was originally erected in 1910 and used as a warehouse. In the 20s, it was converted into a movie theater, playing “The Jazz Singer,” the first non-silent film ever. The theater was expanded to cater to “talkies” and host musical theater productions.

Stars like Debby Reynolds performed there, and as the years passed, grants and refurbishment programs kept the structure safe for guests and allowed the theater to be what it is today, a playhouse for Somers Point.

Cooper has given Shore Local Newsmagazine the exclusive inside scoop into the Gateway Playhouse 2022 calendar. January, February, and March will each have their own Piano Bar event, which also serves as an open mic night. On January 23, “Crying on the Camino” will be staged. Shirley Valentine will perform on Feb. 13 and 14. On April 3, Kelly Briggs will take the stage, flaunting his talents and experience on Broadway and beyond. Ringing In The New Year: Mom Style Mom's Vibe

021 is coming to a surprisingly fast close. As we ring in 2022 with the anticipation of new beginnings and a fresh start, there is much to be celebrated.

For most of us, the days of all-night parties have come to an end. Early wake-up times and needy children have replaced long winter naps. Hours of dancing the night away have been replaced by pre-midnight bedtimes, and “sleepy time” tea has taken the place of champagne bottles. Motherhood changes our lives in a million ways, but it doesn’t have to mean we can’t have some fun with our little ones this New Year’s Eve. Here are a few ideas to celebrate 2022, Mom-Style.

Mock Midnight For younger kids, celebrate a daytime ball drop at noon. Pull up a

YouTube video of midnight countdowns in the past and set the scene with hats, noisemakers, and sparkling juice. For older children, start an “It’s Midnight Somewhere” tradition. Pick an age-appropriate bedtime, then see what part of the world is celebrating the new year at that time. Count down to the new year along with people in a different timezone.

Celebrate Their Favorites We all know how quickly our kids change over the years. Create a dinner and dessert menu or themed evening that honors the child that they were in 2021. Include their favorite

foods this year, items from places they’ve traveled, and new things they tried in the last year. Celebrate the person they’ve become while talking about the year ahead.

Honor Traditions Or Create New Ones If you grew up with family traditions on New Year’s Eve, use a low-key evening to teach your children all about how you grew up and the history of cultural traditions. If your childhood did not involve yearly traditions, use this as an opportunity to create ones with your family. Whether it’s blackeyed peas for good fortune or opening

all your doors to let out stagnant energy, find something that holds meaning, and begin a new tradition that your little ones can carry into adulthood.

Make A Toast Pour the bubbly (or sparkling juice) and take turns making a toast to the year ahead. Ask your kids to note what they’re both thankful and hopeful for. Lead by example with a motherly toast of your own.

Create A Yearly Scrapbook Break out the crafting supplies and create a scrapbook that can be updated for years to come. Fill the book with pictures, stories, quotes, and highlights from the last year. Ask each family member to add their unique contribution, then store the book for safekeeping until next year. As the years pass, you will have a beautiful family keepsake to look back on.

here are so many precious things in life that can’t be seen yet still exist. One such thing is the unconditional love of a mother. Like an angel, she watches over her family. A mother's love is eternal, lighting the lives of those she touched. Her love for a child is like nothing else in this world, knows no law and no pity. A mother is your first love as her children are her last.

My mother passed peacefully surrounded by her family with love and memories. She is now with my father whom she loved from the time they first met on a dance floor. Together they danced the evenings away, as they loved to dance. They made a life commitment to one another and from that came their four children that would continue their journey and legacy: Nancy Adler, Carolyn Petruzzi, Anthony Giardina, and Joseph Giardina.

Their joy continued with grandchildren and great grandchildren that they loved so very much.

Stockton Hosts Holiday Party, Provides Gifts for 50 Area Children

The celebration for Rites of Passage took place at the beautiful All Wars Memorial Building in Atlantic City. The celebration started off with music and people coming together for dinner. After dinner there was a brief program that included Mayor Marty Small, the current Rites Of Passage youth members and two of the longest serving Elders/Counselors Ms. Maria Hadley and Brian Gunter discussing the 25 year history.

The Rites Of Passage Program is a mentoring program for girls and boys

with a weekly lesson plan that covers history, education, culture and more.

When The Rites Of Passage weekly classes have finished the young people take part in a graduation ceremony called The Cross Over. To date The Atlantic City Rites Of Passage Program has helped more than 1500 young women and men crossover.

Meet Claire Stimson, Artist and Creator at Crafts by the Surf

C

laire Stimson of Ocean City has a creative mind.

From a young age, she was quickly introduced to the ever-growing world of creativity. “I was very artistic,” she describes.

With a passion for art and a love of music, Stimson has always known it was something she wanted to do. She began performing masterpieces on the piano at the age of eight and was already a skilled painter.

Nearly 20 years later, Stinson’s brain hasn’t slowed down. She launched her business, Crafts by the Surf, two years ago, with a specialty in creating and selling custom-made crayons, resin, canvas pours, wreaths and ornaments. With frequent trips to the hospital and various medical

issues, she initially began making art as a way to keep busy. “Boredom really sparked it off,” Stinson describes.

Claire’s mother, Tricia, has a helping hand in the business. Her job was to peel and chop crayons. “I have probably peeled and cut ten-thousand crayons.” She has recently performed the task by hand, taking up valuable time and effort.

Her husband has built a wire “holder” where the crayons can be melted out of the paper wrapper. Once the crayons are melted, the wax is poured into a mold, cooled then stored for future use.

One of the most unique items

sold by Crafts by the Surf include carefully-designed pieces made out of Bismuth. Bismuth is a precious metal found on the periodic table. All of the mining for the material is done in Canada, where each of the molds are specially made into different structures, from dogs to crystals, unicorns and horses. Later, each piece is oxidized to create different colors, such as rainbow, blue or silver.

Each crayon is specially made by Stinson, with designs ranging from dinosaurs to numbers, letters, and characters. During the holiday season, Stimson also creates festive wreaths, which can be customized for

any season or occasion, along with festive ornaments to hang on trees.

When Stinson is not creating new pieces, she is on the frontline, assisting medical patients in the trauma unit of a local hospital. Her goal in life is to help others and work as a trauma surgeon. “I always knew I wanted to do something fast-paced.” Stinson says. While continuing to work in the medical field, Stinson says she still plans to create new pieces, in addition to selling her work at local shops in the Ocean City area this coming year.

about setting some time aside that will save you a lot of wasted and misdirected time in the new year. It might not be a bad idea to write down major events or things you did this year and draw a line down the middle of the page and flesh it out: what worked and what didn’t. As you do this, it will give you a head start on the new year.

You’ll begin to see more clearly the things you need to continue to do, the things you need to set aside, and what you might need to ramp up if you’re going to reach your dreams and goals.

You may have heard this before but if you follow the SMART formula it will help you in accessing your situation. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timebound. You can google this acronym and drill down with more specifics for each letter. But the overall idea is to give you guidelines to go by when you're doing your assessment. I use this analogy a lot but it’s like taking a trip. You have the destination locked in. You know where you want to go. But you still have to lay out a roadmap to get there. SMART will help you do that.

Time For A Timeout

aybe it’s time… for a timeout.

It’s hard to believe the year is winding down. Another Christmas is in the books and it's time to ring in the New Year. As we head into 2022, I’d like to leave you with a few thoughts on what might lie ahead for you.

The best way to prepare for the new year is to take a timeout now and reflect on this year. What went right? What went wrong? Where did you concentrate your time and efforts? Should you have done more in one area and less in another? Here’s the thing, I don’t think we need to dwell on the past, but we all need to reflect on the past. I’ve written about this before. We can’t rely on the adage, experience is the best teacher. A lot of people experience things in life that aren’t good and they repeat the steps that led them down the wrong path the first time or sometimes the second and third time. Experience isn’t the best teacher. My mentor John Maxwell says “evaluated” experience is the best teacher.

You and I learn from our past when we take time to reflect, evaluate and then decide how we might approach a situation differently next time or maybe the same way. What have you learned in 2021 that you can build on for 2022? Take some time and think it through.

I know time is tight during this season of the year. But you need to be intentional

aunching 2022 with a positive mindset may be one of New Year’s more challenging resolutions. In the past, healthy lifestyle changes were primarily centered on physical improvements, with exercise and weight loss being among the most popular. As positive COVID-19 cases continue to surge, our collective mental health is again waning. The loss of loved ones, financial stress from lost jobs, and feelings of anxiety associated with the pandemic have all had a significant impact on the way people are coping with the "new normal."

The following activities are a compilation of suggested practices to maintain a positive mental outlook to jumpstart the new year: ● Make time for self-care. List the self-care practices that make you

Be kind to yourself. Honor your feelings and be forgiving of your mistakes.

Make sleep a priority.

Allow your body the rest it craves by going to bed a little earlier each night.

Choose Your Environment Wisely. With the shortest day of the year now behind us, take advantage of the longer days and natural daylight whenever possible.

Ring in the New Year with Three Simple Financial Resolutions

T

he New Year offers the perfect time for a fresh start and a renewed commitment to getting finances back on track after a season of spending – one where many Americans felt the effects of the pandemic on their wallets even before the onset of the holidays.

In fact, COVID-19 has already prompted consumers to start thinking differently about their finances.

According to Lincoln Financial Group’s Consumer Sentiment Tracker, 59% say they are planning to make permanent changes to the way they spend and save due to the crisis. The findings went on to show that consumers’ top three financial concerns in today’s market include emergency savings (41%), having enough income in retirement (40%) and inflation (39%).

“Our research found consumers are especially interested in protection during times of financial uncertainty, which reinforces the need for financial planning,” said Sharon Scanlon, senior vice president, Customer Experience, Producer Solutions and Retirement Operations for Lincoln Financial Group. “Everyone has competing priorities but making a few easy adjustments can help people achieve their financial goals.”

Here are three simple financial resolutions Lincoln Financial recommends for 2022 to help strengthen consumers’ financial outlooks in the new year: 1. Review finances holistically.

Ensure you evaluate the big picture – not just where you are spending, but where you are saving and protecting your future too. A simple budget

will help you differentiate between needs and wants, enabling you to find areas to cut back or eliminate to find money to meet your financial goals, like retirement or emergency savings. Maximize online budgeting tools, calculators and other financial wellness resources available through your employer too.

2. Prepare for the unexpected.

Without the right protections in place, an unexpected event can derail retirement savings, disrupt your ability to provide for your family or drive you into additional debt. Look into coverages like disability, accident and life insurance that may be available through your employer or consider an individual life insurance policy. Also, commit to funding your emergency savings account as part of your budget. And don’t forget to think about how you would fund the cost of care if you or a loved one had a long-term care event.

3. Plan for the future. Start with your employer-sponsored retirement plan and commit to save at least up to the match, if available. If you already meet the match, resolve to increase your retirement contributions each year, or with each increase in pay.

You don’t just need a retirement plan, though – you need a plan for retirement! Consider diversifying your portfolio with an annuity. Also, in-plan guaranteed income options can serve as a powerful tool to protect savings during periods of market volatility, while still benefitting you when the market goes up.

With a few proactive strategies, you can get 2022 started on the right financial foot.
