Celebrating Life at The Southern NJ Shore

Though it is far from easy, I make a conscious effort not to look at my phone while I am spending time with my family or friends. Even as I write this letter, the multi-tasked world is calling me. I do everything in my power not to succumb to the distractions, but it is a daily challenge. Being on the receiving end of someone’s undivided attention is one of the most precious feelings in the world. I strive to be the person that

gives that gift in return. These days, I look for ways to give my now-adult children experiences rather than tangible gifts. I love to provide them with opportunities to build new memories and try new things. This year, my one daughter will receive an airline ticket to join our family on an excursion, while my other daughter is getting a surprise “getaway.” It is mind-blowing how time marches on, and twoyear-olds become twentyyear-olds in what feels like the blink of an eye. Children become parents, and if we are lucky, we become grandparents. I am still in awe of all the moments I encounter the five-year-old at the bus stop, but now they are my nurse, cashier, dentist, etc.… Time is fleeting. All we have is here and now. I wish you joy, merriment, and presence this holiday season. From our family to yours, Merry Christmas

10-Year-Old Carter Doorley Surfs Over 500 Consecutive Days By Krystle J. Bailey

hat began as a 100day goal has expanded well beyond 10-year-old Carter’s wildest dreams. This past Sunday marked 567 consecutive days of surfing for the Brigantine local. Car-

ter Doorley fell in love with the art of surfing at five years old, though it remained a hobby until 2020 when the pandemic left him with limited

entertainment options. Since then, Doorley has become a local celebrity, chronicling his surfing adventure on his Instagram page, Carter Catches Waves. With the world shut down and nowhere to go, Carter took to the ocean for a safe energy outlet. One day of surfing led to the next and Carter put himself to the test. He made a bet that he could surf for 100 days straight.

Now nearing 600 consecutive days, Carter has gained notoriety locally, as well as in the surfing community. Rain or shine, Carter’s commit-

ment to surfing never wavers. His father, a Brigantine beach patrol lieutenant, is committed to maintaining Carter’s safety throughout his surfing journey. Each day, Mr. Doorley evaluates the weather, currents, and waves to select the safest time for Carter to hit the water. As his audience grew and people began paying attention, Carter made the decision to use his platform to give back to his community. Last year, after learning that the Funny Farm was in need of supplies for the animals, he called on his fans for support, raising over $200 for the local animal rescue. This December marks Carter’s second year of collecting donations for the local food pantry in Brigantine. Spending his weekends hosting pop-up collection tables and the power of his social media, Carter has raised over 500 pieces of food and

several hundred dollars for the local food pantry so far this year. This year, Carter partnered with Little Water Distillery's Bar Crawl, placing food donation boxes at three boxes at Little Water Distillery, Bourre, and Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall. Additional boxes can be found at Primal Surf in Brigantine and Tony's Baltimore Grill. Each day brings a new surfing adventure for young Carter Doorley. J Dream Builders owner, Mike Waters, knows first hand what it’s like to live a life plagued by addiction. Which is why he is so passionate about offering a glimmer of hope for those caught in the web of drug use. Mike, who has been in recovery for over five years, volunteers his time on Sundays at Reed’s Organic Farm alongside of Operations Director, Brandon Luis who is also in recovery. The two men are coming together this Christmas to deliver hope, love, and warmth to the Kensington area of Philadelphia. They are collecting blankets, coats, and warm clothing along with unperishable food to hand deliver on Christmas day for those spending

their holiday at what is described as “ground zero for the heroin epidemic.” “I do whatever I can to help people realize that there’s a way out,” explains Waters. “The people that go to Kensington are in a lot of pain. There’s a lot of sadness. Every negative emotion you can feel is in the air there. I know we aren’t going to change the world but if we can help one person by them hearing our story, that’s a win. If there’s anything I can do to help the world not feel as much pain, that’s the goal.” The sentiments are echoed by Brandon Luis, who faced addiction after an accident in 2015, landing him with 10 broken bones and three opiate prescriptions. Feeling the immediate effects of addiction, Brandon struggled to set himself free for years. Now, four years into his recovery, he finds purpose in being a shining light to others. “We understand their fight, their plea. We’ve all been there. We under-

They’re delivering hope and empathy to individuals in desperate need of it. The team of hope-givers, made up of primarily people in recovery, will be leaving Reed’s Organic Farm & Animal Sanctuary at 9:00 AM Christmas morning, headed to Philadelphia. Anyone interested in volunteering their time for the cause is welcome to contact Brandon or Mike. Donations can be dropped off at the farm every weekend until Christmas from 9am3pm, Friday through Sunday. If those

hours are not accessible, Brandon or Mike will happily arrange another time. The goal is to keep people warm. Therefore, donation requests include gloves,hats, warm socks, shoes, coats, blankets, and thermals. Food donations are encouraged, however keep in mind the circumstances of the recipients. Pop top cans and foods that do not require hot water are ideal. As the team travels to and from Philadelphia, they will lean on each other as a source of support in their own continued sobriety. Cars will be on site for volunteers, should someone feel triggered and need to leave. “I feel like my purpose is to show people that you dont have to run from pain. You can deal with it, learn from it, and move forward. There’s a way to have a million things going on and stressors in your life and still have peace inside,” shares Mike Waters. he Showstopper Plus Party Firm has arrived fashionably late onto the scene in downtown Ocean City and is ready to party. Laura Gibbons, the mastermind behind Showstopper Plus, is a self-proclaimed partyologist. Why? Because she specializes in every element of an event. She has experience in being an emcee, photographer, decorator, and trivia girl. She even wrote her own trivia book, Highly Hysterical Trivia, which is perfect for starting conversation at dinners or hosting get-togethers. She received her degree in design and display from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, and has been a CBA (certified balloon artist) since 2000. “When I worked as a disc jockey, I couldn’t stop thinking about how horrendous the decor was at the party,” said Gibbons. “So I fixed it. Then I started doing the photography, and the balloons, and every other part of the party.” Gibbons worked for Blue Moon

Beer, and the company wanted to engage customers by hosting trivia nights about the moon. Then, she started doing trivia on air through the Magic radio station. Eventually, Gibbons was recruited to put on A-list events, like afterparties for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and Tony Robbins’ 60th birthday party. The New Yorker found herself years later moving down the Jersey Shore in 2020 (due to the pandemic), in Ocean City, on 8th street. Today, Showstopper Plus offers tens of options for planning a party. Gibbons will work with clients to set a theme, venue (which can even be at her storefront), decor, music, and photos. “I find that unlike New York, Jersey folks tend to host a lot of house parties,” she said. Gibbons will even develop a personalized scavenger hunt as a unique party

Santa’s Magical List, the third tier, includes a 30-minute consultation with a partyologist and all gifts will be picked up and wrapped by Showstopper Plus and send it to a client before Christmas Day. In a similar vein, a partyologist can prescribe Fun @ Home kits, which give clients games and activities to play with family and friends. For Christmas, Gibbons highlights Five Rounds of Fun, which includes holiday trivia, decorating a person like a tree, and singing carpool karaoke. Cool Toddy

1 oz. Bulleit Bourbon - 1 oz. Pineapple Juice ● ½ oz. Deep Eddy’s Lemon - 1.5 oz. Arizona Iced Tea ● ¼ oz. Mike’s Hot Honey - Lemon slice Stir honey and bourbon together in a shaker until honey is fully dissolved. Fill shaker halfway with ice and add remaining liquid ingredients. Stir and strain over new ice into a glass. Garnish with lemon slices and serve with a straw. ●

1 oz. Allen’s Amaretto - Heavy Cream ● ½ oz. Allen’s Triple Sec - Nutmeg ● 1 ½ oz. Strong Cold Brew Coffee - Espresso Sugar ● 1 oz. Kahlua Vanilla - Oranges ● Woodford Chocolate Bitters Stir amaretto, triple sec, Kahlua, coffee, and bitters together gently with ice, then strain into a martini glass rimmed with espresso sugar (optional). Shake heavy cream vigorously with ice to create a soft foam. Pour gently on top of cocktail, then grate a dash of fresh nutmeg on top. Grate orange zest over top.

A Deep Dive Into Offshore Wind (Part 2)

the Murphy administration is moving forward with constructing wind turbines 26 miles off the South Jersey coast, visible from beach towns including Long Beach Island, Brigantine, Atlantic City, Ocean City, Sea Isle City, Seaside Heights,

Avalon, and the Wildwoods. Atlantic Cape Community College has been selected to educate students in preparation to work these wind turbines. The program has been certified by the Global Wind Organization (GWO). All of this is a substantial part of Murphy’s En erg y M a s ter Plan, to have New Jersey use 100 percent clean energy by 2050. Earlier this month, Con Edison, a New York utility comp a ny, p ro p o s e d “ Clea n Link N ew Jersey,” which ensures the creation of underwater electric transmission between the wind turbines built off the coast of Brigantine and connected to a high-voltage onshore system, creating enough electricity to power 1 million homes. The turbines will power 2.4 gigawatts of potential wind capacity through these channels, which will be covered by a “power corridor,” which Con Edison

claims will reduce environmental impact. In conjunction with Con Edison’s proposal, the Board of Public Utilities confirmed that three offshore wind projects will be erected by 2024, the first being built on the continental shelf across from Brigantine and Atlantic City. The three wind farms will be built by two different companies, the first two will be built by Danish company O r s ted and the third by Atlantic Shores, a joint venture by EDF Renewable Energies and Shell New Energies LLC. Twenty-seven miles off the coast of Virginia Beach, two turbines power 660,000 homes in that region. The project has been powered by Dominion Energy, which plans to build 180 more in the next five years. Their local ABC station interviewed three deep-sea fishermen on whether their catch has been affected by the interruption of their ecosystem. Spangler, one of the fishermen, said that on his trips out to sea he has seen quite the number of new fish. "The little fish are going to come in, the bigger fish are going to come in and then bigger fish are going to come in and the fishing is going to be fantastic. We've been needing this for a lot of years," Spangler said. The operations and maintenance manager of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind Project (by Dominion Energy), Kevin Carroll, believes that the benefits outweigh the costs for offshore wind, claiming that the existence of the two turbines has the same effect of lifting one million gas-fueled cars off the road. “When you put a structure into the water, it's going to have marine life grow on it. And we're in a sense, creating an ecosystem. We've seen tremendous growth, and the number of marine species that have been in and around the turbines where before there was nothing - now we have black sea bass, we have spadefish. Virginia offshore wind plant have waited to receive the results of an environmental impact report before invoking his plan. Protestors claim that sea life, especially mammals, will lose their natural homes and be disturbed by the underwater sound. However, there just isn’t enough research to determine that claim as truth. Orsted, the developer of two of the three NJ offshore wind farms, is conducting a study on the environmental changes. So far in their research, it has been concluded that pods of dolphins and whales will hear the turbines and will swim away to other parts of the ocean. Population migration patterns may change. Nevertheless, Orsted will be installing noise-canceling technology to reduce the sound. The Facebook Group “Save Our Shoreline - Stop the Wind Farms Off the Coast of NJ,” is flooded with locals upset about the project (you have to submit your zip code to prove local status). In their About section, the administrator writes that the nation’s largest wind farm will be built 15 miles from the South Jersey coast. “The monstrosities are over 900 feet tall” and will impact the real estate market, tourist industry, and have negative environmental effects. The cover photo features protesters holding signs with sayings such as “Don’t experiment with my shoreline,” “Save the Whales,” and “South Jersey Says No”. The turbines will be taller than Ocean Casino (formerly Revel), and twice the size of the Statue of Liberty. In October 2021, during the state election, the voters were asked for their opinion on offshore wind. According to Insider NJ, 75 percent of voters voted in favor of offshore wind. Sixty-six percent of voters voted in favor because of

economic growth, and thirty-three percent of favorable votes referred to environmental wellness. Six in ten voters claimed to not be concerned that wind farms would be built within 15 miles of the coast, visible to beachgoers. Eight in ten of the voters were registered as democrats. Recalling OC's Famous Shipwreck 120 Years Later A Look Back By Fred Miller

ne hundred and twenty years ago, December 15, 1901, the Sindia came ashore. The event was reported in the December 19, 1901 issue of the Ocean City Sentinel under this headline: “Bark Sindia A Wreck.” The first paragraph told the story: “The four-masted bark Sindia,

of London, England, owned by John D. Rockefeller, of the Standard Oil Company, and in command of Captain John MacKenzie, came ashore opposite Sixteenth street, this city, about

3 o’clock Sunday morning during a heavy storm, the wind blowing a gale from the southeast. The ill-fated craft sailed from Kobin, Japan, on July 9th last, bound for New York and was laden with a valuable cargo, consisting of 15,000 gallons of camphor oil, and soil, bamboo furniture, China and Japanese goods for the Christmas trade.” The article reported how members of the U. S. Life Saving Service, under the command of Captain J. Mackey Corson, rescued the 33 sailors. Ocean City officials quickly realized the attraction of the 329 foot ship aground just a few hundred feet from the beach. In 1902, Mayor Joseph G. Champion and councilmen William K. Williamson, George O. Adams, Arthur Barrows, Hiram Steelman, William S. Graham and George W. Lee, made sure all promotional literature mentioned the wreck of the Sindia. The 1903 Ocean City guide book included a picture of the famous wreck and the following information: “The wreck of the bark Sindia, of Lon-

don, which was such a great attraction last season, still forms a prominent object upon the beach. This fine, large ship, coming direct from Japan deeply laden with the ware of the Orient, ran upon this beach in December, 1901, in darkness of a foggy night. Much of the cargo, consisting largely of artistic pottery, has been removed, but

the wreck still contains a fortune in goods now deeply buried in the sand. The Sindia was valued at $110,000. Her cargo was worth $215,000. The value of the goods thus far saved is $76,000.” The publicity and mystery surrounding the Sindia made it Ocean City’s most famous shipwreck.

couple of weeks ago I wrote about the value of traditions. There is no time of year I think about this more than during this month. As we inch closer to Christmas and New Year’s Eve, are you making the time to squeeze in some “special time” with family or friends? Every year as a family, we make it a point to try to set aside time to watch some of our favorite movies. One night that has always been special is Polar Express night. My wife buys new pajamas for each member of our family, wraps them up and everyone gets to open an early Christmas gift. Everyone gets in these new pajamas. Then we gather around the television, put some homemade hot cocoa on the stove and “take an imaginary ride” on The Polar Express. At the part in the movie where they serve hot cocoa on the train, we pause the film and serve up our own hot cocoa. Crazy as it seems, everyone looks forward to this night every year no matter how old the kids get. One of my daughters asked if we could go caroling this year. I think we might try to work that into the schedule too. The important thing is to spend time with others making memories. We’ve found that it’s not the expensive or extravagant things that leave the best impression. Rather it’s the little things that everyone remembers and comes back to each year. I’m not naive enough to know that for some of you reading this, the holiday season does not invoke warm memories or happy thoughts. I know this can be a painful time for some. While I can’t say I am able to relate, I would encourage you to surround yourself this year with friends or family who can help lift you up in what is otherwise a difficult season. And for the rest of us, it might be a good idea to reach out to others who may be alone or feeling down and include them in something uplifting and encouraging. This is a time of

year when we celebrate the gift of a baby born in a manager; a baby who came to this earth as the ultimate expression of love. Anyway we can find to share that love and hope with someone else can go a long way to make this season brighter in a time when we all need something to celebrate and lift us up. Merry Christmas! A Senior’s Observations, Opinions and Rantings

f you are one of my regular readers, you may remember that, a year ago, I shared some details about my annual physical. Specifically, I shared the first interview I had with the medical assistant,

who peppered me with questions as required for Medicare patients. To briefly recap, she started with the question “Do you know where you are?” I looked at her blankfaced, wondering if she was serious. Meanwhile, she looked at me, wondering if I just had a stroke. I recovered in time, answered correctly and she proceeded to ask me what year it was. This threw me as well, and I reacted by answering 2010. Her expression gave away her concern. I immediately corrected myself. She then asked me to repeat three words she gave me, which I did correctly, and was quite pleased with myself. About five minutes into the interrogation, she asked me to repeat the words again. I couldn’t remember any of them. She noted this on her clipboard. Questions like this continued as I struggled to regain my composure. I was asked to duplicate the three-dimensional pencil drawing she gave me. Then I was asked to stand up from the chair without using my arms, which I did. When I got home, I called up my friend, Bob, and informed him of my experience. Bob told me his friend went through something similar but

was asked to name 20 animals in 20 seconds. So before Bob’s annual physical, he practiced his 20 animals. When Bob went in for his physical, he was confident in his ability to breeze through the interview. At least, he was right up until the medical assistant asked him to name 20 states in 20 seconds. As the end of the year quickly approached, I scheduled my annual physical for last week. I made sure I was prepared. I knew my 20 animals. After considering how to best remember 20 states, alphabetically or geographically, I decided to start with Maine and just work my way south. Then I would start on the west coast. I also made note of the day, month, and year of my appointment. I reminded myself who the President is, and rehearsed all the information until it was second nature. I put more effort into being ready for this interview than my SATs. As I was ushered into the exam office, the medical assistant gave me a sheet of paper with about 25 questions about my habits and lifestyle. After about fifteen minutes, she took back the questionnaire and told me she was going to recite three words. Then in five minutes, she was going to come back in and ask me what they were. Piece of cake. She said “leader, car, table” and then left. I sat there and kept repeating “leader, car, table. Leader, car, table.” Then my mind started drifting until she came back into the room. I went blank for about five seconds and then repeated the words back to her. After that, she gave me a blank piece of paper and told me to draw a clock with all the numbers and the hands showing 11:15, which I did. She then gathered everything up to leave the exam room. I asked her if that was it. Wasn’t she going to ask me to recite 20 of anything? Didn’t she need to ask me any dates, where I am, or anything? She replied, “Oh, that has been changed. We don’t do that anymore. The doctor will be right in to take your blood pressure again. It was a little elevated.” Charles Eberson has been in the newspaper business for over 25 years. Christmas Cactus – The Gift that Keeps on Giving

ooking for a gift for that “person who has everything”? Consider buying your friend or relative (or yourself) a Christmas Cactus. The exotic flowers in pink and red provide just the burst of color we need during the winter months. Though you read cactus into the name, don’t be fooled into thinking of a desert cactus that can survive long stretches without water. Christmas cactus and its kissing cousin, Thanksgiving cactus, are tropical plants native to Brazil. Instead of hot and arid, think of them in a cooler, but humid atmosphere growing naturally on rocks and trees. True aficionados will be able to identify your cactus based on the shape of the leaves. Your plant will probably fall into one of three categories: Thanksgiving cactus, Christmas

cactus, or Easter cactus. Not surprisingly, the largest difference between the types of plants is their corresponding bloom time, but their soil and light requirements are pretty much the same. When you find a Christmas cactus owner with a thriving plant, you will often hear stories of caring for their parent’s or grandparent’s plant. With proper care, these cacti can live over 70 years! Like most succulents, your Christmas cactus requires good drainage. If the roots sit in water, they will succumb to rot and will also attract pests like mealybugs and fungus gnats (not quite the holiday mood we are looking for). Christmas cacti requirements remind me of the Three Little Bears story: not too hot, not too cold, not too dry, not too wet. Water your Christmas cactus when the top third of the soil dries out, then water thoroughly until it drains through the pot. You will want a bit of sand or grit

Supplies: 3 cups of all-purpose flour ● 1 cup of white sugar ● 1 cup of brown sugar ● 1 cup of molasses ● 1 tbsp of freshly grated ginger ● 1 tsp of baking powder ● 2 large eggs ● 1 stick of unsalted butter, melted ● 1 tbsp of cinnamon ● 1 tsp of nutmeg ● 1 tsp of salt ● 1 nonstick ring pan ● Nonstick cookie sheets ● Cookie cutters ● Cookie icing In a large bottle, add flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir together. In a medium bowl, using an electric mixer, mix white sugar, brown sugar, eggs, butter, ginger, and molasses. Slowly add dry ingredients while mixing at low speed until the batter is evenly-mixed with no dry clumps. Pour batter into the ring pan and bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Dump the remaining batter onto a floured surface and knead for three minutes. Use a rolling pin to flatten dough and press cookie cutters into the dough to make shapes. Place cookies on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for nine minutes. Once the cookies and cookie ring have been baked and cooled for at least 30 minutes, ice cookies and use icing to paste each cookie onto the ring. Layer cookies to make the wreath look abundant. Place the wreath into the freezer for an hour to allow the icing to harden. Remove when ready to exchange! ●

Break up the chocolate into a metal bowl and add 1 cup of milk per cup of chocolate. Place the bowl over the boiling water and stir it constantly until chocolate transforms into a thick sauce. Once the chocolate is cooled and taken off the heat, dip each pretzel in the chocolate and place it on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Add toppings to the pretzels while the chocolate coating is still wet. Place sheet pan in the fridge and let sit for at least 2 hours. Repeat this process with different chocolates and toppings. Once finished, place pretzels in a beautiful container and top with a bow.

They don’t have a left fielder, a center fielder, or enough late-inning relievers, but they do have approximately $183 million in luxury-tax commitments, assuming there is a luxury tax in the next collective bargaining agreement. Again, this is very much a “wait and see” issue. On the local sports front, I want to give some attention to the fact that MAAC basketball is coming back to Atlantic City in March. The Hercules Tire MAAC Men’s Championship will be held at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall March 8th through the 12th. You might recall that

The Jersey Shore Mourns the Loss of Robin Scott

ocal residents are mourning the loss of South Jersey legend Robin Scott of Ray Scott’s Dock in Margate. The beloved mother and friend was known for her fiery spirit and generous heart. She was a fierce advocate for sustainable fishery in our local waters and highly regarded as a protector of the marine environment. Margate Business Association President, Ed Berger, shared in a Facebook post, “If the fish and turtles and seabirds that make our life so special here in Margate City, NJ could cry, today they too would shed tears. Their local champion, advocate, steward, guardian, and irreplaceable spirit of what seemed bottomless energy and passion has passed away.” The abundance of social media posts regarding this significant loss to our community are overflowing with

nothing but love, kindness, and the utmost respect for Robin Scott. Robin, along with her third-generation family, has owned and operated Ray Scott’s Dock since 1959. The dock has been an iconic Margate establishment for over 60 years, offering space for Margate

residents young and old to explore marine life in their backyard. The vibrant business owner spent countless hours fighting for back bay dredging and affordable access to boating and fishing, as well as the rejection of wind turbines off our coast. She was instrumental in the fight

for a law that allowed families to register for the Saltwater Fishing Registry online, making it more accessible for local residents to enjoy the benefits of fishing. In addition to her advocacy and generosity, Robin was well known for her commitment to rescuing and raising baby terrapins before releasing them back into the bay waters. She actively volunteered her time to help several organizations close to her heart including the Marine Fisheries Council where she fought to protect summer

flounder fishing. Robin was passionate and knowledgeable, educating anyone who would listen about the wetlands, marine life, boating, and fishing. She was a go-to resource for local community members and business owners alike. Everything that Robin stood for benefited the local community. She has been hailed as a “local treasure” as her life is celebrated up and down the Jersey Shore. Robin Scott will be deeply missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. Her impact on the South Jersey community was immeasurable and will leave a gaping hole in the hearts of many. Inviting Plants to Your Table Italian Vegetable Bake

Ingredients 1 ( 28 oz can ) whole tomatoes ● 1 medium onion sliced ● 1/2 lb. Fresh green beans, sliced ● 1/2 lb. Fresh okra, cut into 1/2 inch pieces or 3/4 cup frozen okra ● 2 tbsp. Lemon juice ● 1 tsp. Chopped fresh basil, or 1 1 tsp. Dried basil, crushed ● 1 1/2 tsp fresh oregano leaves or 1/2 tsp dried oregano crushed. ● 3 medium (7 inches long) zucchini, cut into 1-inch cubes ● 1 medium eggplant, pared and cut into 1-inch cubes ● 2 tbsps. Grated Parmesan cheese ● 3/4 cup finely chopped green pepper Drain and coarsely chop tomatoes. Save liquid. Mix tomatoes and reserved liquid, onion, green beans, okra, green pepper, lemon juice, and herbs. Cover and bake at 325 ovens for 15 minutes. Mix in zucchini and eggplant and continue baking, covered, 60-70 more minutes until vegetables are tender. Stir occasionally, sprinkle top with Parmesan cheese just before serving. Enjoy! There are so many stories of people that stopped their education because of family situations. This was the first organiztion I came across that helped single mothers/familes get back on track with their education. This past Friday The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Southern New Jersey Chapter came to Atlantic City to engage our women here at The Noyes Arts Garage Of Stockton University’s Second Friday Holiday Party. The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Southern New Jersey Chapter is dedicated to helping all the women in South Jersey from Camden to Atlantic City to Wildwood and Cape May. I was so excited to be able to interview their President, Dr. Marguerite Hall. Question: What is NCBWSNJ? The Southern NJ is one of three chapters in the state of NJ and 62 chapters in the US. What is your mission? To advocate on behalf of Black women and girls to promote leadership development and gender equity in the areas of health, education and economic empowerment. Question: What kind of woman would be an ideal candidate for membership? Ideally, one is keenly aware and incensed by the inequities which exist. My sister comes with a desire to make a change and is aware of what she has to contribute; a leader and a team player; possessing passion and commitment to making a difference. Question: What is your vision for NCBWSNJ under your leadership? The two words that come to mind are impact and influence. It is my vision that the Southern New Jersey Chapter will implement impactful and sustainable programs which ipact the community to effectuate change. And from this impact influence those in

This is done in collaboration with local hospitals and clinics. (February) STEAM Conference (virtual) designed to provide our Black girls with an understanding of the professions available; an opportunity to meet Black female professionals in the area of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math who share what the career entails and what is needed academically to achieve and excel. a lt Hohman, the owner of Wards Pastry, makes dozens of gingerbread houses that delight the community and taste sweet. The baker has mastered the art of the gingerbread house. He built his own molds out of plywood to perfect the house walls and roof. Hohman bakes his traditional gingerbread extra dry to maintain its shape and stay strong. He uses jigs to keep the roof sturdy. After the structures cool, he uses royal icing to connect the walls and lay the roof, then lets the icing set for a day. Next, Hohman frosts on the windows and door, letting it set for another day. On the third day, the baker ices on decorations and perhaps adds grass or a tree as well as a yard sign with the customer’s name, resting for another 24 hours. On the final day, Hohman lays on the final touch: icicles on the roof. “The busier, the better,” said Hohman. “The more gumdrops and

little candies you add, the more elaborate and beautiful the house looks.” Wards Pastry sells tens of gingerbread houses, each with the same general look, but different details. Hohman recently began switching out trees with surfboards and grass for a beach, erecting houses more similar to those in Ocean City than on the Mainland. butter cookies (decorated by hand) daily, along with pies and doughnuts. Hohman excitedly shared that one great holiday treat tastes better than its reputation: fruitcake. Wards Pastry sells plenty of them, for gifts and personal consumption. Eighty percent of the cake is pineapple, cherries, raisins, dates, cherries, walnuts and pecans. “It’s extremely moist,” said Hohman. Hohman is the third-generation

owner of Wards Pastry, which was established in the 1920s by Mr. and Mrs. Ward. In 1941, after Mr. Ward had passed away, Mrs. Ward sold the bakery to Hohman’s grandfather. Since then, the store would make tens of gingerbread houses, including one large one that would sit in the front window. “Almost ever yone buys cookies or desserts for teachers, barbers, bus drivers….really as gifts for the first half of December,” said Hohman. “The last week before Christmas is when people buy treats for their families.” Hohman has great tips for baking at home. “When you open the oven and question whether something is finished baking, take it out of the oven. It’s better to undercook than overcook,” he said. “Always set a timer. Always.” As for gingerbread houses, the great baker says to not be afraid to take your time. Letting pieces rest and firm up avoids the classic tragedy of collapsing walls and drooping candy. Enjoy the process, and remember to do some holiday baking.

Cape May has a full schedule of events to keep you busy all the way through the New Year. Cape May is a popular seaside resort at the tip of southern New Jersey’s Cape May Peninulsa and is traditionally a family favorite destination in the summer, with their pristine beaches, amazing restaurants, and numerous homemade ice cream spots. y family and I recently adopted a puppy and we quickly learned that puppies need a lot of activity. It’s a good thing that we have an active family! We incorporate our new pup into our workouts. Our other dog has been more of a cuddle bug and was never very active, so this is fun for us to experience something new. If you want to spend some quality time with your dog while improving your health, what's the best way to get started? Walk at least 30 minutes, five times per week. Older adults and dogs may benefit from shorter walks of 10 to 15 minutes each day. If you wouldlike to start jogging with your dog, it’s essential to increase the distance incrementally. You have to

build them up to it just like you build yourself up to it. You have to get their paws, my less and heart acclimated. Think of them as you would yourself when beginning anything new. When taking your dog out to exercise, always check the weather. Always make sure to have water. Use a sturdy, non-retractable leash to give you more control, as well as a harness instead of a collar, to avoid pulling on their neck. However, before you begin, remember that all dogs are different. So it’s important to find a form of exercise that works for both you and your dog. Explore what exercise might be best for your pup. An example may be of an English Bulldog who may not be much of a runner but come summer could be your partner on a paddleboard. There are numerous different exercise options you can explore. Try and mix them up into your workout routine. There are also a variety of outdoor sports you and your dog to do. This also depends on seasons, weather, and your dog’s personality. Some popular outdoor sports to try with your pooch are kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, and hiking.

The intensity level can vary, and you’ll want to make sure that you’re both well prepared for more involved workouts, like hiking or paddleboarding. As yoga has become more and more of a preferred exercise for humans, it’s only natural that it would expand into the world of dogs and goats too. Many studios offer dog yoga classes where you can do yoga with your dog. I should try this with my dog, Mo, since she loves when we hold our plank poses. She’s my older pup and could handle some downward dogs. Now, with our newest addition, I have been getting a great workout by throwing a ball and chasing it right alongside him. We run back and forth, over and over. We play tug of war and I do squats to keep the pressure off my lower back. Be mindful of form while playing with your dog. We also do side shuffles and plyometric exercises. Plyo metric exercises are where you come off the ground. I think our puppy may be a part kangaroo because he excels in these. I’m getting some great workouts in with him.

There are several different ways that you can work out together, and you should explore several options until you find the ones that are best personally for you and your dog. Therefore, activities that work not only your dog’s body but his mind, are particularly beneficial. The same goes for you. Coping with Grief during the Holidays (part 3)

am hoping some of the knowledge I gained as a funeral director can help you recapture some joy through the holidays. The final and most important thing is to take care of yourself. Avoid using alcohol to self-medicate your mood. Physical exercise is often an antidote for depression so take a brisk walk in the cold winter air. You could try writing in a journal as an outlet for your grief or give yourself permission to buy something frivolous and indulgent, just because. There is nothing wrong with a Christmas gift for yourself. I will recommend that you don’t do more than you want, and don’t do anything that does not serve your soul and your feelings of loss. You should allow time to express all of your feelings. Don’t keep them bottled up. If you have a thousand tears

to cry, then cry and don’t stop at five hundred. You want to allow others to help you if you are grief stricken. Remember we all need help at certain times in our lives. I will remind you to be gentle with yourself and give yourself grace. You are not weird for feeling the way you do because “everyone” around you is happy due to the holiday season. You are by no means alone in your perspective. It is because of this common need to express loss during the holidays that my firm has been holding an annually Memorial Tree Lighting Service for the past eighteen years. The service is meant to recognize the loss of loved ones by anyone in our community. It acknowledges the loss, and it helps people realize that they are not alone in their feelings and that in fact there are many people that are dealing with the exact same thing. At these services I have witnessed multiple families tell the story of their loss and they truly feel heard and more importantly understood. I am sure that if you look around your local community you will find similar services or events. For those of you reading this article and are not dealing with grief during the holiday’s but know some-

one who is I strongly urge you to reach out to them. My advice is don’t ask if you can help or should you help a friend in grief. Just help them. Find ways to invite them to group events or just out for a cup of coffee or cocoa. Also, when it comes to children pay extra attention to them during the holidays because children are too often the forgotten grievers. Holidays are clearly some of the roughest terrains we navigate after a loss. Finding meaning in the loss is as individual as we are. We often say a part of us died with them, but finding meaning is also realizing a part of them still lives within us. What is vitally important is that we be present for the loss in whatever

form the holidays do or don’t take. Getting through the holidays is part of the grieving journey that we must undertake. They can be very sad, but sometimes we may catch ourselves doing okay, and we may even have a moment of laughter, or even a smile. The last thing I learned myself is that it takes time. Grief never truly goes away, especially during the holidays, but it does lessen in time. I hope this article helps any of you who are battling grief during this season or know someone that is dealing with it. Community First Trees Sparkle on the Bayfront

anta arrived along Bay Avenue Wednesday, Dec 8. to help usher in the holiday season with local residents and members of Somers Point Community First. Twenty-five Christmas trees from Huffman Farms and Greenhouses now twinkle brightly in the evening on the block of Bay Avenue between New York Ave. and Medical Center Way. The trees were decorated by local businesses, community groups, several families and departments at Shore Medical Center. “We wanted to bring some holiday sparkle to the Bayfront and our friends and volunteers jumped in to be a part of this very festive effort,” said Kathy Ciboldi, a founding member of Somers Pont Community First. The participants who decorated trees include, Shore Local magazine, Josie Kelly’s Public House, Shore

Preparing yourself financially will be one of the most important aspects of your home buying plan. While this includes proximity to work and neighborhood amenities, it also includes tracking the prices of comparable properties in your target area. Talk with a Real Estate Agent or Broker to develop a baseline for current comps and historic trends in the neighborhood that you are interested in. Remember that there has been a significant market movement over the past year and a half, with home prices rising at a record pace in many communities. Understanding the change in home values over the past several can give you a more realistic perspective. In addition, work with a Real Estate professional now to develop a targeted search based on your neighborhood and property preferences. This will allow you to see when new properties come on the market that fit your criteria so that you can begin to develop a sense of how values are changing over the next few months. Real Estate inventory has been low in many places, driving home prices higher and resulting in multiple offers for most new listings. Is Your Roof Ready for Winter?

omeowners are advised to check their roof twice a year but there's no need to risk your life climbing up on the roof when you've got a perfectly good attic. The late fall is when you're supposed to check the health of your roof. (Among other reasons, because it's key to a home's energy efficiency.) But who wants to be climbing a ladder 25 feet or so into the sky when the weather is turning sharply colder and nastier? That's where your attic comes in. According to Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence, that space you're probably using mainly for storage can substitute, as a fallback, for the eyeball roof check normally recommended to be done every pre-winter and spring. "Roofs actually create an insulated barrier that helps trap heat inside, and most attic spaces are located right below them," says Joplin. "That makes them perfect for spotting potential problem areas and damage without worrying about falling off a ladder." Here's what to look for while you're up there: ● Water leaks. During a heavy rain, shine a flashlight up in the attic.

Check not only for dripping water and condensation, but also for water stains on the ceiling, walls and floors. All signal that H2O is finding its way beneath your roof's shingles or behind its flashings. ● Ventilation. "Think of the attic as the lungs of the house," advises Joplin. "It has to be able to breathe to function properly." Which is to say, vents stuffed with debris need to be cleared. ● Animal damage. You know those "If you see something, say something" homeland security ads? Well, to avoid the havoc refuge-seeking birds, bats, squirrels and raccoons can create, warning bells should likewise sound -- followed by a call to a pest-control pro -- if you spot any of these telltale signs: nests, droppings and gnawed wood, wires or insulations. ● Structural problems. The mere hint of a sagging roof -- look up for this one -- could indicate potential structural weakness requiring professional repair. And if prolonging your roof's life is your goal, experts say it pays to consult a professional roofing contractor who's insured and uses quality materials. (NewsUSA)
